Poor Minivan Crash Test Results for Three Models

November 28, 2014 by admin 1 Comment

IIHS assigns poor ratings to Nissan, Chrysler and Dodge models.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently put four minivan models through its new small overlap front crash test and three of those models received poor marks, the institute’s lowest score. The Nissan Quest, Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country each missed the mark, while the 2015 Toyota Sienna received an acceptable score. Another model, the Honda Odyssey, was tested previously. It received a good score and was also awarded the IIHS’ coveted Top Safety Pick+ award.

“Minivans are popular among parents, a group that tends to be safety conscious, but we’ve only seen two so far that offer decent protection in small overlap crashes,” says David Zuby, IIHS executive vice president and chief research officer.

The IIHS says that the test “…replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or a utility pole, the crash forces bypass the vehicle’s main energy-absorbing structure.” The institute noted that these types of crashes can be especially difficult for minivans to handle due to them being built on car platforms that are also wider than cars. With more of the vehicle located outside of the main structure, those areas are more vulnerable. Moreover, minivans weigh more than cars.

IIHS minivan test

2015 Toyota Sienna

Toyota’s Sienna model fared well because the manufacturer updated the front end beginning with the 2015 model year specifically to aid in small overlap protection. Even so, it didn’t perform as well as the Honda Odyssey with the IIHS noting an intrusion of 5.5 inches at the upper door hinge pillar and the instrument panel.

The dummy’s head also contacted the front airbag then slid off to the left side. The Institute also found that the safety belt did not do its job properly as it allowed the dummy to move too far forward.

Still, there were some positives for Toyota. The side curtain airbag deployed and provided adequate forward protection from the intruding structure. Subsequent measures revealed that the injury risk would have been low in a real crash.

Nissan Quest Tested

As for the Nissan Quest, the institute found that the vehicle’s structure was shoved in by almost two feet at the lower hinge pillar. Moreover, the parking brake pedal moved forward toward the driver by 16 inches. The dummy’s left leg was also trapped between the instrument panel and the seat, and its right foot got caught between the brake pedal and toe pan. To remove the dummy, technicians had to cut the entire driver seat out. They then used a crowbar to free the right foot.

The Institute said that a real person involved in such an accident “…would be lucky to ever walk normally again.” Likely, that individual would suffer from a broken right femur. The IIHS applied its poor rating to Quest models spanning five model years from 2011 to 2015.

Chrysler Town & Country Results

As for the Chrysler Town & Country, its structure collapsed around the dummy. The Institute found that the intrusion measured 15 inches at the lower hinge pillar and the instrument panel. The technicians also revealed that “…skin on the dummy’s left lower leg was gouged by the intruding parking brake pedal, and its left knee skin was torn by a steel brace under the instrument panel.” Moreover, the head scarcely touched the front airbag before moving off and striking the instrument panel, as the steering column shifted to the right. The technicians also discovered that the door sill and the steering column both pushed in near the driver. The side curtain airbag did deploy, however it did not provide adequate forward coverage.

The Institute said that “measures taken from the dummy indicate that injuries to the left hip, left knee and left lower leg would be likely in a crash of this severity.” Notably, some of the forces encountered “were off the scale.”

The results have been applied to 2008 to 2015 Chrysler Town & Country models and its twin, the 2008 to 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. A third model, the now discontinued Volkswagen Routan, also is covered for four model years spanning 2009 to 2012. The Routan was a rebadged Chrysler minivan.

Kia Sedona Test Pending

One minivan model has yet to be tested and that would be the Kia Sedona. The manufacturer has told the IIHS that it is making changes to the model over the coming weeks in a bid to improve small overlap protection.

Following the most recent test, the IIHS also assigned the Toyota Sienna with its Top Safety Plus award.

NHTSA Tells Takata to Order a National Recall

November 27, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Airbag supplier Takata, a Japanese company, has been ordered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to expand its current recall to the national level. The NHTSA contacted Takata and 10 vehicle manufacturers this week, ordering a national recall of affected vehicles.

The expanded recall follows further evaluation after the NHTSA discovered a recent incident involving a driver’s side air bag inflator that failed outside an area of high absolute humidity. The original recall applied only to vehicles sold in states such as Florida where high humidity can contribute to airbag failure.

The NHTSA also warned that unless Takata and the manufacturers quickly agreed to the expanded recall, then it would use its statutory powers “to ensure vehicles that use the same or similar air bag inflator are recalled.”

“By demanding this national recall, NHTSA has demonstrated once again that it will follow data and evidence to protect the lives of Americans on the road and to hold manufacturers accountable,” said Secretary Anthony Foxx.

Affected Manufacturers

NHTSAThe affected manufacturers are: BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Toyota. Not all models use Takata airbags and the model years can vary.

The NHTSA says that it will require each manufacturer to file, under oath, a detailed report and produce all related documents about completed, ongoing or planned testing of Takata inflators outside the current regional recall areas.

The agency says that it is demanding this information “…to compel Takata and the affected industry to be frank with not only NHTSA, but the American public, as to what testing and additional steps they have done and plan to do to control and mitigate the risk associated with Takata’s defective inflators.”

Special Order to Takata

NHTSA has also issued a Special Order to Takata, representing the second one the agency has issued to the company about this defect. That order compels Takata to “…provide, under oath, documents and detailed information on the propellant used in Takata’s inflators.”

Since the original recall Takata has admitted that it had changed the chemical mix of its air bag inflator propellant in its newly-designed inflators. Moving forward, the NHTSA says that it will continue to anaylze “…the information received to determine if the chemical composition of Takata’s propellant mix may be a cause and/or a contributing factor in the air bag inflator ruptures.”

“We now know that millions of vehicles must be recalled to address defective Takata air bags and our aggressive investigation is far from over,” said NHTSA Deputy Administrator David Friedman. “We’re pushing Takata and all affected manufacturers to issue the recall and to ensure the recalls capture the full scope of the problems.”

Recall Acknowledgement Letter

The NHTSA is also issuing a Recall Acknowledgement Letter, what it describes as “a routine response to all Safety Recall Reports filed with the agency.” The letter provides a summary of the information submitted by Takata about its defective passenger side air bag inflators and also identifies the information gaps the NHTSA insists Takata spell out to establish that this manufacturer is supplying complete details as the law requires.

The agency says that it “…is not aware of either field incidents or test data suggesting that the problem affecting passenger-side air bags in the areas of persistently high humidity extends beyond those areas, the agency has been pushing the industry to perform testing to ensure that current recalls effectively cover vehicles with air bags that could be potentially affected by this defect.”

The agency will use the new information it receives from Takata and the 10 car manufacturers to provide supplementary details it needs to further its probe into complicated matter. The NHTSA says that responses to the General Order and Special Order are expected by December 5.

Year of the Recalls

With the expanded recall, 2014 will most certainly go down as the Year of the Recall. Car owners should visit the NHTSA’s Recalls & Defects page to keep up with the latest news. You can also plug in your vehicle identification number (VIN) to determine if your car has not been repaired as part of a safety recall in the last 15 years.

Gasoline Fuel Choices for Today’s Cars

November 26, 2014 by admin 3 Comments

Buy a new car, especially one that requires gasoline, and you may soon find that the grade of gasoline you thought it should take is not the correct one.

Most service station pumps offer three grades of gasoline with octane ratings of 86 to 87 (regular), 89 (mid grade) and 91 to 93 for premium. The price spread between the lowest and highest grades is as much as 50 cents, making for quite a price difference if you have a gas tank of 15 to 20 gallons or more.

What grade gasoline should you use? Only what the owner’s manual tells you to use. The car manufacturer is the only source for determining the right grade, what must be followed if you want to avoid engine damage and voiding your warranty.

Like all gasoline-powered Jaguars, this one requires premium grade gasoline.
Like all gasoline-powered Jaguars, this one requires premium grade gasoline.

What is Octane?

Octane indicates a fuel’s ability to resist engine knock. If the octane is not high enough, then the engine will not be able to handle the heat and pressure.

When driving, this problem becomes apparent if you hear the engine pinging, rattling or knocking. Constant engine knock can damage the engine’s pistons, bearings and head gaskets, causing engine damage. Are you prepared to pay thousands of dollars in repairs?

6.2-liter Supercharged LSA engine
Supercharged or turbocharged, premium fuel is required.

Recommended Versus Required Grades

The manufacturer’s language for the octane or gasoline grade used will typically state words such as “recommended” or “required.”

If a certain grade of gasoline is recommended, that means you can use whatever grade you want. A recommended higher grade gasoline may deliver slightly improved performance, but the lower grade is still safe to use.

When a certain grade is required, then you must use it. Typically, this requirement is for turbocharged or supercharged vehicles that must take premium grade gasoline as these engines operate at higher compression ratios.

Other vehicles that take a lower grade under normal circumstances may require a higher grade when towing. Again, consult your owner’s manual.

Knock Protection

Cars built today are outfitted with a knock sensor, what retards ignition that causes knocking. This sensor prevents engine damage, but it also reduces performance and fuel economy slightly.

When the knock sensor fails you will know it — your car will run poorly and the check engine light will activate. Service your car immediately, do not drive it.

Fuel Considerations

Even with the lower recommended gasoline grade some drivers insist on filling their vehicles up with a higher grade, thinking that their cars will perform better. Generally, that is not the case and what you end up with is paying more at the pump than you need to.

Count the Subaru WRX among those models needing a premium boost.

Dodge Dart Aero

Ford Mustang — Equipped with 5.8-liter V-8 engine.

Honda Civic — Equipped with 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.

Hyundai Equus
Hyundai Genesis Coupe
Hyundai Genesis Sedan —5.0-liter V-8 engine only.

Infiniti — all models except for the Q60 hybrid.

Jaguar — all models.

Kia K900

Lexus GS 350
Lexus GS 450h
Lexus GX 460
Lexus IS 250
Lexus IS 350
Lexus LX 570

Delivered: 2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4×4

November 25, 2014 by admin 9 Comments

2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited

Sometimes the second time around is simply better. For instance, when you revisit what had been previously experienced the chances are good you will gain a different perspective and perhaps a renewed appreciation during the next go around.

2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4×4

Such was the case for this writer when a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4×4 arrived as his weekly driver earlier this month. It followed his first drive by more than half a year; in the ensuing months, he had the opportunity to test drive other crossover utility vehicles and compare those models to that first Jeep.

The second go-around also revealed something about the current iteration of the Jeep he hadn’t appreciated before — and that would be the front fascia with its polarizing lighting layout, specifically, the slash LED lights co-located with the turn signals and found above a separate display and layout for the headlamps. Yes, I had originally thought that it made for too modern of a design — especially for a Jeep — but following months of seeing scores of new Cherokees around town I have been won over by the controversial look.

2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited

Four Trim Levels

The earlier model tested was a Trailhawk; this time around a Limited was delivered. For 2015 the Cherokee offers four trim levels: Sport ($22,995), Latitude ($24,695), Limited ($28,395) and Trailhawk ($29,895). These prices are for 42 models — you need to add $2,000 to each trim level to get the starting price for 4×4 versions.

As tested, the Limited 4×4 came in with a base price of $30,395 with a full sticker price of $38,510. Jeep lent me one with several upgrades to include: a $995 safety package that added blind spot and cross path detection; a $1,495 technology package that came with adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and park assist; and a $1,695 luxury group that brought in bi-xenon HID headlamps, a power liftgate, premium leather bucket seats and ventilated front seats. A $1,695 engine upgrade replaced the base four-cylinder engine with the 3.2-liter V-6 and brought in a start/stop system. For $845, upgraded UConnect infotainment was included and for another $395 a nine-speaker audio system was added.

Compact Crossover Utility Vehicle

As before, the Jeep Cherokee is a smaller crossover utility vehicle. Thus, its competition is along the lines of a Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V and a Hyundai Tucson, just to name a few. However, it seems larger than most competing models and although it is a crossover like the others, Jeep has also made it off-road ready.

Indeed, Cherokee buyers will find not one, not two, but three 4×4 systems to choose from: Jeep Active Drive I, Jeep Active Drive II and Jeep Active Drive Lock. The base 4×4 with Jeep Active Drive I comes with single power transfer unit and moves in and out of four-wheel drive at any speed.

Buyers of the Latitude and Limited can upgrade to Jeep Active Drive II and get a two-speed power transfer unit with torque management and low range. Choose the 4-Low mode and both the front and rear drive shafts lock, ideal for low-speed drive and towing. Ride height is also increased by one inch and the crawl ratio is improved.

Jeep Active Drive Lock adds in a locking rear differential, to provide enhanced low-speed power for the toughest off-road conditions. It is only available on the Trailhawk; the other editions provide one or both Active Drive options.

2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited

Off-Road or Not

Regardless of trim level, every Jeep Cherokee 4×4 comes with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction control system, what delivers on- and off-road settings to include: automatic, snow, sport, sand/mud and sport. Selec-Terrain adjusts up to 12 systems, including stability control, brake controller, transmission controller, hill ascent and hill descent, among others.

Me thinks that most Jeep Cherokee shoppers do not buy one with the intent to take it off road even if their chosen model comes with all the 4×4 bells and whistles that some people prize. Jeep routinely moves more than 15,000 Cherokees each month in the US alone — among that number are the hardcore off-road enthusiasts — even then the most avid off-roaders are more likely to choose the Wrangler. For the majority of Cherokee owners, a 4×4 may serve as insurance against tough road conditions (such as snow) more than anything else.

And in keeping with its prevailing use, I kept the Limited on the road at all times. My review of the 2014 Cherokee Trailhawk included my off-road use — for this go around I was more interested in acquainting myself with its on-road capabilities as well as its cabin.

2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited

Potent V-6 Engine Option

As before, the 3.2-liter V-6 making 271 horsepower and 239 foot-pounds of torque was under the hood. Jeep offers a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine making 184 horsepower and 171 foot-pounds of torque, what provides a modest fuel mileage edge (22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway) over the best fuel economy you can get with the V-6 (21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway). A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard across the model line.

In my mind, those differences are hardly worth settling for the token base engine — upgrade to the V-6 and you won’t complain about a lack of power. Besides, you’ll get the full benefit of 4,500 pounds of towing capacity with some models. The V-6 delivers generous amount of power off the mark and on the road — steering is responsive, handling is very good and the brakes are firm, not spongy.

One year removed from its introduction, Jeep made a few changes to the Cherokee that are worth noting. The backup camera is now standard on more models —all except the base Sport model has one. Jeep also added hands-free texting and quite a few safety and security enhancements as part of package upgrades, including park assist and forward collision warning. A tonneau cover is now a stand-alone option on all models.

2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited

Cherokee Trailhawk v. Limited

With Trailhawk and now Limited editions behind me, the differences between both high-end models seems small. Indeed, the Limited brings in such top features as: keyless entry, start/stop ignition, heated leather-trimmed seats and the touchscreen UConnect system with an 8.4-inch screen. You also get the fanciest wheels — 18 inch polished aluminum wheels to the 17-inch off-road aluminum wheels for the Trailhawk. Simply put, the Limited is the top-of-the-line Cherokee for mostly on-road and in town purposes whereas the Trailhawk is the king of Cherokee off-roaders.

Regardless of the model chosen, you get authentic room for five adults and many of the creature features you crave including: air conditioning, power accessories, a digital driver information center, front and rear floor mats and a tilt and telescopic steering wheel column. UConnect is standard across the model line and every model comes with a host of safety features. If you want a better-equipped model, then start with the Latitude and add in the packages you want.

Likely, when all is said and done, your well-equipped model will push past $30,000 and upwards of $40,000 if every option is selected. That puts the Cherokee at the top of the compact utility vehicle pricing spectrum, but that is what you get when a premium model is considered.

Mitsubishi Shows Radical Concept, Insists That They’ll Stay in the US

November 24, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Smallest Japanese manufacturer makes plans for the future.

Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV

This just in: Mitsubishi says that it plans to stay in the United States. To support its contention, this Japanese car manufacturer showed a concept XR-PHEV vehicle at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show to underscore its future design direction. A near 30 percent year-to-date sales increase and auto show news conference notwithstanding, Mitsubishi still has much work cut out for it.

Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV

First, the concept vehicle at hand. As the renderings show, what we have here is the requisite crossover utility vehicle, precisely what manufacturers are leaning on in far greater numbers in response to current auto trends. I don’t know about you, but I’m finding it increasingly more difficult to get excited about any crossover as there are so many of them. Me thinks that they’ll soon peak in popularity with customers wanting something different — coupes, maybe.

Now back to the concept. If this is Mitsubishi’s styling direction, then they’ll be making as radical a design shift as any manufacturer has proposed in this current millennium. What we have here is a vehicle with an extremely high hood line smacking right into the A-pillar, a rising belt line and a rear fascia that is beyond easy description.

Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV

No doubt Mitsubishi’s designers were given the license to “go radical” with the concept. I’m not sure how much good it will do.

As is becoming quite common these days, the concept is yet another plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Yes, whether you want one or not. Manufacturers continue to design vehicles based on ever more stringent federal mpg ratings. It’ll be a wonder whether customers will actually want said vehicles.

Starship-Themed Interior

Radical that the exterior of the concept XR-PHEV is, the interior is full-on futuristic, with a decidedly starship theme. Oddly, as Mitsubishi declares that it will stay in the US, it serves up a right-hand drive interior.

Sure, you don’t have to do too much imagining to consider how the interior might look for the US market, but if you’re trying to convince American consumers that you’ll be staying, then how about showing us a left-hand drive interior?

Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV

That interior is peppered with LCD screens for the instrument gauge, across the dashboard and up and down the center console. It looks like a video game display and a big distraction at that. Perhaps Mitsubishi has autonomous driving in mind for the XR-PHEV? If not, the interior would most certainly have to be toned down. Yes, I don’t get the steering wheel design either.

Mitsubishi is Here to Stay

Second, Mitsubishi shared the obligatory remarks to confirm its plans. We brought the Concept XR-PHEV to LA so that we could talk about our new design direction and how future products will be taking clues from its dynamic lines, said MMNA Executive Vice President, Don Swearingen. We also brought it to LA to reinforce the message that Mitsubishi is here to stay in the United States. As we regrow the brand we will introduce new models while updating existing ones, creating a new look and a new value proposition for the brand.

Well, let me throw some cold water on this pronouncement. Mitsubishi’s rebound this year is certainly noteworthy as the automaker is far outpacing the industry’s growth and sales are increasing faster than most any other manufacturer. Even so, the company’s sales are far below the 345,000 units it sold as recently as 2002 according to Wards Auto.

Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV

This year, Mitsubishi’s US sales should top 70,000 units, thanks to renewed interest in its Outlander Sport crossover and its Mirage subcompact. However, Ford sells a greater number of its Edge crossovers alone each year than Mitsubishi sells of its entire product line.

Next Industry Downturn

To survive in this market you need volume and Mitsubishi certainly does not have it. When the next industry downturn arrives, Mitsubishi just may not be strong enough to weather the crisis. That’s something to keep in mind if you plan to shop for one.

Fiat 500X Marks the Spot

November 21, 2014 by admin 4 Comments

Third Fiat model arrives stateside next year.

Fiat 500X

The Fiat brand is slowly taking hold in the US with two 500 variants currently serving the market. First, we had the tiny 500 and its multiple model lines, then the larger 500L followed. A third line, the Fiat 500X, was introduced this week at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. It represents an all-new crossover for the 2016 model year.

2016 Fiat 500X

The Fiat 500X was introduced just one day after Mazda took the wraps off of its own compact utility vehicle, the CX-3. Fiat and Mazda will compete with the Nissan Juke, a model that has been credited with getting the segment going when it emerged on the scene in 2011.

“The Fiat 500X will significantly expand the reach of the FIAT brand in North America,” said Jason Stoicevich, Head of FIAT Brand North America, Chrysler Group LLC. “The all-new 500X delivers the Italian design and personality that we are known for, along with an unprecedented level of equipment and technology. In addition, it will be the first vehicle in our portfolio to offer an advanced all-wheel-drive system that will provide customers with peace of mind in all driving conditions.”

The standard engine for the Fiat 500X is a 1.4-liter turbocharged four cylinder rated 160 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque. It is the same engine found in other Fiat models.

Customers can also choose a 2.4-liter four cylinder naturally-aspirated engine making 180 horsepower and 175 foot-pounds of torque. The base engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission; the larger engine gets a nine-speed automatic transmission. It is with the larger engine where customers can opt for all-wheel drive.

Fiat 500X

Roomy Interior

Fiat is making a big deal about passenger room with the 500X, saying that it comes “with comfortable setting for five.” That may or may not be a slap at the Juke, a crossover best suited for two or with two little ones in the back seat. Likely, the Mazda CX-5 will offer comparable seating room to the Fiat — let’s see how Nissan responds when the next generation Juke comes out in a year or two.

Fiat also says that the the 500X comes with up to 70 standard and available safety and security features. Stability control, hill-start assist, electronic roll mitigation and seven airbags are included with all models. Also available is forward collision warning, lane sense departure warning, blind spot warning and rear cross path detection.

This model makes available Fiat Chrysler’s UConnect infotainment system, including a 6.5-inch touchscreen color display, navigation, Bluetooth streaming audio, keyless entry, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

Fiat 500X

Trim Levels and Packages

Five trim levels will be offered, including the familiar Pop, Easy and Lounge editions. Trekking and Trekking Plus are new to the brand and come with unique front and rear fascias, along with satin silver accents.

Other features available will include: automatic headlamps, fog and cornering lights, a power sunroof, tinted glass, a rear wiper, dual-zone climate control, cloth or leather seats, ambient lighting, audio system packages, a power driver’s seat, tire upgrades and wheel choices.

Fiat will also offer at least 20 package upgrades, with most corresponding to the trim level selected. For example, the Trekking Plus Collection 1 package brings in a dual-pane sunroof and an eight-speaker Beats audio system.

Anticipated Release Date

Fiat Chrysler says that the 500X, built in Melfi, Italy, will go on sale in the first half of 2015. It will be marketed in more than 100 countries worldwide. Pricing and other details will be provided closer to its release date.

Jaguar F-TYPE: AWD and a Manual Transmission

November 20, 2014 by admin 2 Comments

Jag sports car receives important enhancements.

Jaguar F-TYPE

If you want to be taken seriously as a high-performance sports car there are two options you must offer. The first is a manual transmission. The second is all-wheel drive. Certainly, the manual is of greater importance — all-wheel drive isn’t critical, but it is nice to have.

The Jaguar F-TYPE has lacked both attributes since its introduction for the 2014 model year. Currently, power is sent to the rear wheels by means of an eight-speed automatic transmission. The F-TYPE is a beautiful and capable beast in its own right, but beginning in 2016 its two major deficiencies will be eliminated.

2016 Jaguar F-TYPE

At the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show this week, Jaguar unveiled the 2016 edition of its latest sports car. The 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE will offer standard all-wheel drive with its R models, enabling it to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. The sports car’s top speed will be limited to 186 mph.

Jaguar says that all-wheel drive will be optional for S models and the six-speed manual transmission will be available with rear-wheel drive V-6 powered models only. Electric power steering is also new to the line.

As before, a supercharged V-6 engine coupled with rear-wheel drive is standard. F-TYPE R Coupe and Convertible models will have the supercharged V-8 engine, all-wheel drive and the eight-speed automatic transmission. The base engine is rated 340 horsepower and 332 foot-pounds of torque. The V-8 S is rated 495 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque. The top-of-the-line V-8 R makes 550 horsepower and 502 foot-pounds of twist.

Six-Speed Manual Transmission

In providing a six-speed manual transmission, Jaguar acknowledges that there is still a core group of drivers that prefer to work the gearbox themselves. Jaguar says of the transmission that it features a short-throw gear lever, closely-spaced ratios and well-placed pedals for heel-and-toe changes. Consider these changes were made to help keep Jaguar faithful from being lured by the likes of Porsche to the 911 or Cayman.

Other changes to the 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE include new dials and gauges in the instrument cluster, an upgraded infotainment system with improved connectivity and telematics functions, a related smartphone app that adjusts climate control and an automatic crash notification feature.

Jaguar will also up the standard feature quotient with the 2016 F-TYPE. All models receive keyless entry, 14-way power adjustable seats, a 770-watt audio system and SiriusXM satellite radio. Coupe models also will have a standard panoramic glass roof and R Coupe models gain a power tailgate. All S models will see changes to the driving mode and the addition of a new flat-bottomed steering wheel.

All-Wheel Drive With Dynamics

The Jaguar’s all-wheel drive system will feature Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD), representing an in-house designed control system networked with the powertrain, rear differential and center coupling to optimize torque distribution. IDD will work in tandem with the sports car’s stability control system. The AWD system will provide better handling under a number of driving conditions to include: normal, rain/ice/snow and dynamic modes.

About IDD Russ Varney, Vehicle Program Director, Sports Cars, Jaguar said, “IDD allows us to provide ‘Instinctive All Wheel Drive’ – only delivering torque to the front wheels when it’s required to enhance traction. That means we get great steering precision and the efficiency of a rear-drive car, but with additional traction via the front wheels precisely delivered to match the driver’s demand, the road surface and the driving situation.”

Electric Power Assisted Steering

The all-new Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system reflects years of internal research and development work. Jaguar says that its work has paid off in a system that provides immediate response and a connected feel. It replaces the long-used hydraulic power assistance system for a more energy efficient system.

Pricing and additional model details will be provided in 2015 closer to the F-TYPE’s 2016 model year release date.

Volvo Intends to Stay, Thrive in the US

November 20, 2014 by admin 3 Comments

At the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Routinely, automotive journalists and analysts look at the industry’s smaller players and posit whether these manufacturers will stay around. In recent years Daihatsu, Isuzu, Suzuki and Saab have exited, leaving people guessing whether Mitsubishi, Mazda or Volvo might join them.

Volvo, however, will have none of that. They’ve been saying that they are staying and at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday they backed up those words with more details.

Reviving its US Presence

Specifically, Volvo says that it intends to revive its US sales and it will do so by renewing its entire product range within the next five years. Volvo has also promised to place a new focus on its dealer network, its management team and spend more money on marketing. Notably, the Swedish automaker plans to update its engine line and expand its safety technologies.

Volvo also acknowledged that it is currently in the midst of a ten-year drop in US sales. For 2014, Volvo expects to sell 60,000 units stateside. but even before its product line expansion is finished the company expects to sell approximately 100,000 cars annually in the United States. Right now, Volvo is reporting strong sales in Western Europe as well as in China.

“Volvo is in the US to stay. Not only will we stay, we will prosper,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive of Volvo Cars. “We have a plan and we are implementing it. We sold over 100,000 cars a year in the US in the past. Our initial aim is to get back to that level and in the longer term surpass it.”

Five Volvo Elements

Volvo also identified five elements that are key to its US revival plans and they are:

1. A full renewal of Volvo’s product range is underway and will be completed within five years. The renewal has begun with the all-new XC90 and V60 Cross Country.

2. Brand strengthening will take place as the company plans to double its marketing budget in the next year.

3. Volvo says it will develop its dealer network in a bid to ensure that it has the infrastructure in place to support both brand development and new products.

4. The company plans to protect buyers’ residual values and maintain Volvo’s premium status in the process.

5. Volvo intends to improve its service operations by both ensuring that the dealer network is profitable and by delivering service quality that owners expect.

Volvo XC60 Cross Country

The company says that it will meet its goals through its new management team and with new technologies, including Drive-E, representing its latest engine line. Volvo will also continue to lead in safety and connectivity.

The Volvo XC60 Cross Country debuts to American and Canadian customers first. This tall wagon is powered by a 250-horsepower five-cylinder engine and has a ground clearance 2.6 inches higher than the standard V60. Volvo says that the Cross Country is for people that demand all-weather capability, a sporty drive and the latest safety features. Indeed, the Cross Country comes with standard hill descent control, what maintains the vehicle’s speed when driving down steep inclines.

All-new Volvo XC90

Where the Volvo XC60 Cross Country builds on an existing model, the Volvo XC90 is all new. It is also the first model to reflect Volvo’s updated fascia with a more prominent iron mark and T-shaped “Thor’s Hammer” daytime running lights. This model comes with a larger hood, more powerful shoulders and distinctive beltline characteristics. Its rear fascia is marked by tattoo-like rear lights.

The top-of-the-range XC90 Twin Engine is outfitted with a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine. It also has an electric motor, combining for nearly 400 horsepower. Drivers can switch to electric-only mode and drive for approximately 26 miles for pure electric drive. Also available is a T6 engine with a supercharger and a turbocharger, making 320 horsepower and 400 foot-pounds of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard across the model line.

Winning the Battle

Volvo certainly has a battle on its hands in a bid to grow its presence in the ultra-competitive US market. It just might take Thor bringing his hammer down to give this premium, niche manufacturer a real fighting chance.

Juked: 2016 Mazda CX-3

November 19, 2014 by admin 3 Comments

Finally, the Nissan Juke has some competition.

2016 Mazda CX-3

Nissan Juke alternative: 2016 Mazda CX-3

The compact utility vehicle segment will soon be populated by a new model — the 2016 Mazda CX-3 — what is making its global debut today at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Where the ugly, but fun Juke polarized the masses, the CX-3 presents a more desirable persona, one that also advances Mazda’s attractive KODO-Soul of Motion design language.

The all-new Mazda CX-3 should serve as a signal to all that Mazda intends to stay in the US market and that its product line is one of the more stylish ones in the business.

2016 Mazda CX-3

2016 Mazda CX-3

That Mazda’s newest model is a utility vehicle should surprise no one. The crossover utility vehicle market continues to grow and the bottom end of the market is woefully under-represented. Nissan has largely had the market to itself since it introduced the Juke in 2011, now shoppers have a choice in what most likely will become a red-hot segment as manufacturers ready competing models.

Of the 2016 Mazda CX-3, Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations said, “CX-3 complements the Mazda lineup, as it perfectly hits the target in a rapidly growing segment in the industry. Customers are shopping for vehicles that are fun to drive, great to look at, fit their busy lifestyles and are an outstanding value, both at purchase and when it comes time to trade it in, making every Mazda a smart choice.” Yes, take that Nissan: Mazda thinks your Juke is, well, too freaking ugly.

2016 Mazda CX-3

Gas Engine Only, No Manual Transmission

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 has been designed for global release. In the US, it will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Sorry, unlike the Nissan Juke, there is no manual transmission for the states.

Other markets will see a 1.5-liter diesel engine — imagine such a model available in the US. Well, keep on dreaming as Mazda has no plans to bring diesel clatter stateside, at least not for the CX-3.

The Mazda CX-3 will offer standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive with active torque control for improved handling. Seating five, the CX-3 measures 101.2 inches between the wheels and is 168.3 inches long, 69.5 inches wide and 61 inches tall.

2016 Mazda CX-3

KODO Design Language

From the outside, the Mazda CX-3 advances the brand’s now-familiar face. The headlamp design has the turn signals located outside of the main headlamp unit for a narrow, sharp design. Those lights connect seamlessly with the grille and are integrated with the LED daytime running lights. The front fascia is sporty and displays an aggressive look.

This model has strong shoulders, a powerful stance and its body lines suggest a vehicle in motion, hence the KODO look. Dramatically arched wheels, strong profile characteristics, rocker panel trim and a sports car like roofline enhance its muscular persona. To the rear the Mazda CX-3 is outfitted with a spoiler, wraparound tail lamps and twin chrome exhaust pipes.

Inside, the design flair includes a driver-oriented cockpit, generous use of soft-touch materials and special accents across the door, on the seats and across the dashboard. Cloth seating is standard, parchment leather and suede are available.

Mazda’s SKYACTIV thinking extends to the body that offers a more rigid design for better handling, improved safety and weight reduction. In the CX-3, Mazda makes greater use of high-tensile steel and ultra-high tensile steel throughout the body.

2016 Mazda CX-3

Japan First, Then the World

You’ll have to wait a while for the Mazda CX-3 to show up at US Mazda dealers. Mazda says that it will go on sale first in Japan next spring, then roll out to other markets as the year advances. Pricing, trim levels and other details will be shared closer to its release date.

Toyota Mirai: Fuel Cell Future Realized

November 18, 2014 by admin 3 Comments

Toyota turns a new chapter in green driving.

2016 Toyota Mirai
The not-too-distant in the future 2016 Toyota Mirai.

The 2016 Toyota Mirai is making its global debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show today. For the first time since its Prius line was released in the 1990s, Toyota is shifting its green car bets slightly to incorporate a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). “Mirai” is Japanese for future as this advanced model can go 300 miles on a single tank of hydrogen. Refills take only five minutes to complete; its only emission is water vapor.

Toyota, like several other manufacturers, have been testing fuel cell vehicles for many years. Earlier this year Hyundai leapfrogged the competition by releasing a fuel cell version of its Tucson crossover utility vehicle, a model available in California only.

Toyota, Air Liquide Agreement

Toyota has California in mind too, but plans to sell the Mirai well beyond the Golden State. In advance of the FCEV’s official debut, Toyota North America chief executive officer (CEO) Jim Lentz announced that five northeastern states will get the Mirai in 2016, about a year after California. Lentz said that Toyota is putting the final touches on an agreement it has made with the French industrial gas company Air Liquide, to serve its customers.

As part of the agreement, Air Liquide is developing a network of 12 new hydrogen filling stations spanning from metropolitan Boston to the Greater New York area, in a bid to help owners drive uninterrupted. Thus, the Toyota Mirai will eventually be made available to customers in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.

Beyond Prius: Toyota Mirai

The Mirai may represent a bigger gamble for Toyota than its original foray into green vehicles. In the 1990s, Toyota began to produce its first hybrid gas electric vehicles dubbing that model Prius, Latinized for “before.” Then, Toyota was busy patenting the process and ensuring that its nickel-metal hydride battery could do the job.

The Prius went on sale in Japan first and arrived in the US six months after the Honda Insight in 2001. Very soon, however, Prius became the standard bearer for hybrids while Honda became mostly an afterthought for people prizing fuel efficient and clean driving.

Honda also got the FCEV jump on Toyota by introducing its FCX Clarity sedan in 2008. That model went to a handful of mostly high-profile clients, including actress Jaime Lee Curtis, but a full-blown production model has been pushed back to at least 2016. And even as Hyundai has the bragging rights for first production FCEV, larger Toyota just may have the resources to expand its market presence faster.

Toyota Mirai Details Forthcoming

There are a lot of things we don’t yet know about the Mirai, details that will most likely be covered in today’s news conference. Toyota may have given us enough news to pique our interest, while remaining mum on the particulars.

Even with its own investment in helping to expand California’s hydrogen filling station network, it is the lack of stations currently online today that will give buyers reason to pause and consider. Indeed, there are 11 hydrogen fueling stations in the United States and nine are in California according to the California Fuel Cell Partnership. Some 49 additional stations are under development in the Golden State, but there are no plans in place to expand beyond California except for what will be coming online in the northeast corridor.

Owners of pure electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf have always had access to electrical hookups wherever they have traveled, but FCEV owners must carefully consider their routes or risk becoming stranded. Until or unless federal policy changes, the act of bringing such filling stations online will likely stay in the hands of two industries: automotive and fuel.
