Forecast: 7 Top Auto Trends for 2016

December 31, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

We take a look at what may become the top auto trends for 2016.

This year (2015) will go down as one for the books. Specifically, it will be a sales record breaker once the books have been closed on Jan. 4. That means on Tuesday we’ll know which model was the best selling car (Toyota Camry), the best selling truck (Ford F-150), and the best selling luxury brand (BMW). Sorry for the spoilers.

Since the market bottomed out in 2009, consumers have been snapping up new vehicles, especially crossovers. Manufacturers continue to roll out new models along with the latest technologies and safety features.

If you haven’t purchased a car in at least a decade you’ll find a long list of included or available amenities not offered way back when. To that end, we’ll look at some of the top auto trends for 2016 and the impact of such trends.

1. Car sales continue to rise.

We’re due for an economic downturn, but that drop may still be more than a year away. If so, then look for US auto sales to top 18 million units in 2016, setting yet another record.

Although the Federal Reserve Bank has raised interest rates by 0.25 percent, the effect on consumers should be negligible. What is helping nearly everyone is low gas prices. As long as regular grade gasoline averages $2 per gallon or less, consumers will save hundreds of dollars per year.

2. The presidential election will become a factor.

No matter who the Democrats and Republicans serve up as their candidate, we’ll have two people who will be more alike than different. A number of policy issues will be discussed and debated; creating jobs for Americans will remain a top issue.

Expect both candidates to promise the moon, even if they can barely deliver on those promises. Expect a new administration to carefully review the fuel economy standards, perhaps proposing a rollback of the 54.5 mpg mandate that nearly all manufacturers will find tough to implement by 2025. That rollback, however, won’t occur before the new president takes office in January 2017.

3. Chinese-built cars will increase in numbers.

It wasn’t too long ago that the thought of Chinese-built cars reaching the North American market had some people up in arms. After all, how could any manufacturer compete against a $6,800 Geely? Then again, what junk would be foisted upon consumers at such a low price point?

Well those fears are unfounded. First, no Chinese manufacturer has entered the market all by itself. Second, the cars that are imported from China are from known manufacturers. For instance, the Volvo S60 Inscription, a stretched wheelbase model, is made in China. The Chinese-made Buick Envision arrives this spring.

Although the floodgates aren’t about to open, you’ll see more products from different places thanks to the Trans-Pacific Partnership Free Trade Agreement (TPP), which is expected to be signed in February. You can also expect strong push-back against TPP from both sides of the political aisle.

4. Automotive lightweighting goes mainstream.

Okay, vehicle lightweighting is nothing new. Its just widely misunderstood.

A case in point — when I inquired at a recent automotive media event regarding lightweight properties for a new pickup truck, my hosts didn’t seem to understand my question. That question was further clouded when a colleague quipped, “They didn’t want to make it lighter because it is a heavy duty truck.” Sigh.

Car manufacturers, however, get lightweighting. They’re also working with elastomer manufacturers around the world to incorporate nitrile butadiene rubber in under-the-hood applications. As long as these and other materials are cost-effective, recyclable and practical, then greater adoption will continue throughout 2016 and well beyond.

2015 Ford F-150

The current-generation Ford F-150 is the poster model for all things lightweighting.

5. The lurch to autonomous driving continues.

The experts tell us that autonomous driving will arrive in 2020. That means within five years we’ll see the first driverless cars take to the road. That also means the beginning of the end for behind-the-wheel driving. Or does it?

No doubt, some type of autonomous driving will be in place, but with more than 250 million registered vehicles in the US, the percentage will be small, quite possibly matching the adoption rate for electric vehicles. Consumers won’t give up their cars en masse for several reasons, including wanting to keep the cars they love as well as not being able to afford the attendant higher cost for autonomous vehicles.

Politically, a backlash against autonomous vehicles may emerge, especially if consumers grow weary of the intrusiveness — perceived or otherwise — that emerging technologies bring, particularly in the form of privacy. Instead of a wholesale adoption of autonomous cars, a number of safety features will be standard. We’ll see adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and lane keep assist in more models in 2016.

6. New alliances and partnerships emerge.

We’re seeing more alliances emerge across the auto industry and that pace should continue in 2016. Such agreements will be forged to give manufacturers an edge wherever needed. Toyota and Mazda hooking up essentially keeps the latter in the ultra-competitive US market for the long haul while giving Toyota much needed product (Scion iA) for a low cost. Mazda will soon benefit from Toyota hybrid technology; both manufacturers will probably share Mazda’s SKYACTIV technologies to some degree.

I won’t predict where those alliances will emerge, but figure that any product holes will be filled by such agreements. Mitsubishi, if it is to survive in the US, must find a partner to supply a midsize sedan, share in EV development, and otherwise fill out its weak portfolio. Today’s strange bedfellows may become tomorrow’s partners.

7. Technologies begin to work as touted.

If you have purchased a car within the past two or three years, the telematics system may be one of your least favorite options. Consumer surveys conducted by J.D. Power have amplified that frustration, thus getting it right will give manufacturers a much-needed edge in luring on-the-fence shoppers.

Helping matters are two technology giants — Google and Apple. Both companies are vying for dashboard access with Google Android Auto and Apply CarPlay enabling ease of smartphone integration. Where manufacturers are slow to adopt either, third-party audio systems such as Pioneer and Kenwood are making units compatible with both. Thus, if you have an older car, you can enjoy that access and avoid buying a new car.

Top Auto Trends

Other top auto trends will have little to do with your car, at least directly. Most will have to do with buying a vehicle, with leasing likely to continue to grow in numbers, while long-term auto loans of up to 84 months become more common.

Of course, if any major international crisis erupts, then these predictions should be amended or tossed.

On the Road With a Subaru XV Crosstrek

December 30, 2015 by admin 4 Comments

Just as it enters its fourth year, the Subaru Crosstrek drops its “XV” designation. As for the model at hand, a 2015 edition was the subject of a weekly test drive.

2015 Subaru Crosstrek

Take a look at Subaru’s entry-level SUV line up and this niche automaker is well represented.

The Subaru Forester is the mainstay model in this segment, but it has since been joined by a second model, the XV Crosstrek. Both models are based on the same chassis or platform, derived from the Impreza line. Moreover, the Crosstrek also offers the only hybrid in the Subaru line — I tested the Crosstrek Hybrid a few years back and was, quite frankly, disappointed by the fuel economy numbers.

2015 Subaru Crosstrek
2015 Subaru Crosstrek

Let’s Make it a Crosstrek

Late in the calendar year, Subaru sent out a 2015 edition for my inspection. Notably, the 2016 model holds in place the base $21,595 price of the 2.0i edition; it also drops the XV nomenclature and is now simply known as the Subaru Crosstrek. That’s a wise move because an earlier model with a dual appellation — the B9 Tribeca — was known simply as the Tribeca before it was discontinued.

The 2016 edition also represents a refresh as the latest model receives a new front fascia with an updated grille, bumper and headlights. The latest model also gains Subaru Starlink Connected Services; blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert are also available. Me thinks that the updated features will attract more buyers to the 2016 edition than to the outgoing 2015 model.

Subaru offers the Crosstrek in three trim levels: base, Premium ($22,295) and Limited ($24,795). Choose the hybrid and you’ll disburse $25,995 for the standard model or $29,295 for the Touring edition. Like all Subaru models except for the BRZ, all-wheel drive is standard across the Crosstrek line. Keep that in mind when comparing this SUV with other models in the segment, such as the Ford Escape, Kia Sportage, Toyota RAV4, Chevrolet Equinox, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and the Hyundai Santa Fe.

2015 Subaru Crosstrek

A Base Boxer Engine

All Crosstrek models are powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder BOXER engine. Boxer means that the cylinders are horizontally opposed, resulting in reduced vibration. Manufacturers such as Subaru and Porsche still use them and also say that they last longer than corresponding inline and V-type engines.

Subaru pairs the base model with a 5-speed manual transmission and offers a continuously variable automatic transmission elsewhere. The CVT is the mileage leader here — delivering 26 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, precisely 3 mpg more than the manual. Consider that fuel mileage advantage as one more reason why manual gearboxes have very little to offer these days besides a lower upfront cost ($1,000 price differential). Then again, most drivers don’t know how to operate a manual.

For about $1,500 more you can buy a comparably equipped Subaru Forester. That model offers a larger interior, a more powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, an upgraded audio system, and available power front seats and a power rear liftgate. The Forester shares the same wheelbase, but is one inch wider and six inches longer overall than the Crosstrek.

Is it a Wagon or an SUV?

Is the Subaru Crosstrek an SUV or a tall wagon? Does it really matter? The Forester has the more traditional SUV look while the Crosstrek has a wagon-like presentation. From the front, the Crosstrek sports Subaru’s trademark logo across its broad grille. Large, wraparound headlamps, a sizable lower grille opening and fog lamps are available.

This model is marked by a rising beltline, a sloping roofline, profile character lines, and oversized wheel wells. To the rear is a liftgate spoiler, wraparound combination lamps, and reflector lights.

2015 Subaru Crosstrek
2015 Subaru Crosstrek

Inside, seating is for five with cloth bucket seats up front and a split folding 60-40 seat at the rear.

Consider the instrument panel and dashboard layout as simple or uncomplicated and you have an apt description of what you see when you sit behind the wheel of the Crosstrek. All models come with steering wheel-mounted controls, a tilt and telescopic steering column, power accessories, power side mirrors, carpeted floor mats, and a security system.

Choose the Premium edition and the Crosstrek brings in heated exterior mirrors, windshield wiper de-icer, heated front seats, and upgraded trim. Select the Limited edition and leather-trimmed upholstery is standard. You also get automatic headlamps, automatic climate control, and an upgraded instrument cluster.

That instrument cluster is composed of an analog tachometer and speedometer readouts with a digital driver’s information center situated in the middle. At the top of the center stack is an additional digital display featuring temperature, time, and other information.

Beneath the centered vents is the available Subaru telematics system with knobs and switches to operate the same. Just below that are the dials for the climate control system and at the base of the console is a smartphone compartment with USB and 12-volt outlet connectivity. Between the seats is the transmission shifter, coin holders, cup holders, and a covered armrest/storage compartment. All four doors feature storage compartments with bottle holders.

2015 Subaru Crosstrek

Telematics and EyeSight

Subaru maintains its safety leadership with all models receiving Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recognition. Indeed, the Crosstrek has been awarded with a Top Safety+ rating from the IIHS, the institute’s highest score. Specifically, that high score is attained through its EyeSight driver assist system, available in both the Premium and Limited Editions.

The EyeSight package ($1,295) brings in adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane departure warning, and sway warning functions. All models also come with a rear view camera.

On the Road

Don’t look for the Crosstrek to wow you performance wise. Its 2.0-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine makes 148 horsepower along with an output of 145 foot-pounds of torque. Step on the accelerator and you’ll gradually make your way down the road. The CVT spools up and makes its presence known as it pushes the engine to ever higher RPMs.

Furthermore, you’ll hear a second sound — wind noise — emanating from the quarter glass windows. Although these windows do not open, the airy sound coming through them is unmistakable. Add in undistinguished ride comfort and the Crosstrek performs no better than average in all the all-important NVH (noise-vibration-harshness) classification.

Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system sends power to all four wheels, transferring that energy to the wheels with the best grip. The power shift adjusts, depending on whether you are accelerating, decelerating, as well as on the road conditions. If you live where winter conditions are prevalent or if you enjoy the occasional light-duty off-road sprint, then this Subaru might be right for you.

Choose Your Subaru

As for me, if it came down to the Crosstrek or the Forester, I would opt for the more well known of the two models based on its near 20 percent power advantage and larger interior. Those differences may not mean as much to you, but they’re certainly two of the more notable considerations when evaluating two otherwise very similar models.

Confirmed: Audi Q2 Arrives in 2016

December 29, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

Yet another SUV model line is planned for Audi. At the same time, its best selling Q5 will be replaced by a new model.

Is there a tipping point for SUVs? The segment certainly continues to grow, accounting for approximately 40 percent of all new vehicle purchases in the United States. Mainstream and luxury marques alike continue to add them, filling nearly every hole — real or conceived — in the segment.

New Audi Q2, Updated Q5

Audi, like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, has the segment covered. But Audi still sees room for growth and will introduce an all-new model in 2016, the Q2. In addition, the next generation Audi Q5 will also debut, giving this German luxury brand one of the freshest SUV model lines in the industry.

Audi Q2

Up next: Audi Q2 SUV.

Yesterday, the Audi Group outlined its plans for the coming year with the company’s CEO, Robert Stadler, stating that the automaker will be “continuing with high levels of investment in future technologies to enhance [its] strong position.”

Near-Term Investment Plans

A big chunk of that $3 billion euro investment will come in the form of alternative drive systems, including its first large-series battery-electric vehicle, based on the Audi e-tron Quattro concept. Audi’s already expansive product line will continue to expand and include 60 different vehicles by 2020.

Not much is known about the Audi Q2 although sources such as Autoweek claim that the vehicle is based on the Audi Crosslane Concept, which is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform. That platform underpins a number of models, including the Volkswagen Golf. The Audi Q2 might be considered a competitor to the Mini Countryman.

Second-Generation Audi Q5

The second-generation Audi Q5 (the brand’s best selling model) will arrive for the 2017 model year, replacing the first-generation SUV after an eight-year model run. A 2013 refresh brought in several changes and added a high-performance SQ5 edition. The Volkswagen’s Group diesel crisis means only gasoline engines are currently available, effectively inhibiting sales.

One issue Audi has been slow to resolve is its USB connectivity or lack thereof. Audi does make it possible to connect your smartphone, but only if your personal product and that cable connect — good luck with that, my iPhone 5 simply has no compatible cable.

Sixth Straight Year of Sales Gains

Despite not offering diesel products over the past several months, Audi has managed to enjoy increased market share. In November, its sales rose by 0.4 percent, but was good enough to record its 59th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases. Through November, US sales are up 11.7 percent, outpacing the industry. At this pace, Audi should enjoy its sixth straight year of sales growth and top 200,000 units for the first time.

Despite the continued gain, Audi will remain in a distant fourth place in 2015 among luxury makes, finishing behind BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz, with each marque selling at least 325,000 vehicles per year in the US. New product from Cadillac and Hyundai’s soon to arrive Genesis luxury brand should make things interesting these next few years.

Calculating Fair Trade-in Values

December 28, 2015 by admin 1 Comment

The deal on the new car has been sealed, but there may be one important matter left undone. And that is calculating the trade-in value, what ultimately might clinch the sale or have the buyer changing his mind and leaving your showroom in search of a better offer elsewhere. Once you lose the customer there may be no going back. Here’s how calculating fair trade-in values will turn your shoppers into buyers.

Determine Trade-in Value Early

Dodge ChallengerIt is important for salespeople to determine whether a trade-in will be involved early in the sale. If the customer says that she will trade in her car, then ask for the keys to have it evaluated by your shop. Make it known to the customer that the evaluation is free and that her keys will be returned to her as soon as the appraisal process has been completed. In the meantime, continue with the negotiation.

Obtain the Vehicle History Report

At the same time the shop is reviewing the car, they should obtain the vehicle history report for the car.

It will serve as evidence to the customer if your offer comes in lower than her expectations. For instance, if the car has been in an accident, its value has been diminished even if the repairs were successfully completed. As the dealer, you know that the same vehicle history reports are available to customers, including people who want to buy the car from your inventory. You could lose money if you do not take previous problems into consideration, a fact you must share with the customer at trade-in.

There is another point that dealers must consider when accepting a trade-in. If the car involved is part of a major recall, including one that was initiated due to injuries or deaths, you are the one who will be held liable if something goes wrong, not the customer. That also means if the car is traded in with open recalls, you may lose time acquiring parts to make the car ready for sale.

Establish a Fair Trade-in Value

Lexus ES350Your appraisal team may be able to determine a value simply by examining the car. Of course, that is not enough as the value must be backed by hard data. A service such as NADAGuides.com should be consulted and it may also be the same service used by your savvier customers.

It is important that the information related to the car is precise, going beyond the make, model and year, and right down to the trim level, engine and transmission, mileage, and other details about the vehicle. Take note of the rough, average and clean trade-in prices as well as the retail price. Wherever possible, aim for the average trade-in price when presenting the appraisal to the customer. Adjust if necessary to account for low or high mileage and other factors. This will be your starting point for negotiation.

Present Your Offer

At some point in the car buying process, you will have the appraisal offer in hand to present to the customer. Your company’s policy may be to present the offer as part of overall negotiation, but the customer may want it handled separately.

Regardless of the policy, you will quickly learn if the amount offered has satisfied the customer. There is a very good chance that he’ll hold out for a higher amount. Be prepared to explain how that figure was determined, but don’t be surprised if the customer presents his own data offering different numbers. It is at this point when the business office will get involved.

Making it Fair

Audi A6What one person considers a fair value may be perceived as inequitable by the other, usually the customer. If the difference is a few hundred dollars, you might be instructed to meet the customer part way. It is at this point you need to gauge the customer to determine whether a deal is possible or if the sale is about to collapse.

For the salesperson, he may feel caught in the middle between the car shopper and his business office. The process can become especially difficult if both sides come armed with data and are firm in their positions. Fortunately, your company likely has some steps in place to help close the deal.

One of these steps may be to offer the customer something for free, such as paint or door protection. The retail cost of the item may more than offset the price difference, but only cost your company very little to implement. Do what is necessary to help the customer understand that the trade-in value is fair.

Satisfying the Customer

Your deal will close if the customer is satisfied. If not, you risk having the trade-in taken off the table. And in many cases, the trade will cancel the deal as it usually serves as the bulk of the down payment.

Ultimately, the business manager will either approve or nix the trade-in value. If the car being traded in is something your lot can turn around and sell for a significant profit, then more than likely your manager will bend to the customer’s wishes.

Say Good-Bye to These Models

December 25, 2015 by admin 1 Comment

2015 will signal the end for several models. A few will disappear in 2016 and at least two models are poised to return after a brief hiatus.

2015 Hyundai Genesis Sedan.
The 2015 Hyundai Genesis will morph into the 2017 Genesis G80.

Every year, manufacturers retire models, including some that won’t be replaced. The retro Ford Thunderbird left us in 2005 after a four-year run; the Saturn Sky also lasted for four years, then was canceled as GM killed the brand in 2010.

Over the coming year and in some cases within the coming week, a number of models will drive off into the sunset for the last time. The following is our list of models that won’t see the 2016 model year or will be canceled before the 2017 vehicles are released.

1. Hyundai Genesis and Equus — Say it ain’t so! Yes, the two largest and most luxurious models in the Hyundai product line are on the way out. The good news is that both sedans will be replaced over the next two years by a new “Genesis” line of models, known as the G80 and G90, respectively. Hyundai is now “all in” on a luxury brand as it plans to deliver new models to compete with BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz under the Genesis marque.

2. Jeep Compass and Patriot — Jeep has not one, but two compact models to draw in customers. Both models are based on the retired Dodge Caliber platform and have sold very well, especially over the past year. However, Jeep plans to drop both models when a new compact SUV arrives late in 2016. Word has it that the new model may retain the name of one of the outgoing vehicles. Jeep hasn’t said which one will survive, but we’re thinking Patriot has a better chance than Compass.

3. Lincoln MKS — Based on the same platform underpinning the Ford Taurus, the Lincoln MKS had European aspirations — especially in all-wheel drive garb — but it never measured up. The MKS has been a perennial underseller since its introduction and will be retired next year to make way for the Lincoln Continental. The Continental is based on a stretched Ford Fusion platform, but it has the style, amenities, performance and the name cache that no three-letter Lincoln nomenclature can match.

4. Mazda Mazda5 — Mazda seems to have the Midas touch when it comes to vehicle manufacturing, presenting winners with its Miata MX-5 roadster, Mazda6 midsize sports sedan, and the CX-3, a compact SUV. Like other manufacturers, minivan or small multi-purpose vehicle offerings such as the Mazda5 have struggled. That’s too bad because when it comes to SUVs, Mazda has found much success. Still, the minivan segment is barely hanging on and for those customers who want one, models such as the Kia Sedona, Chrysler Town & Country, and Toyota Sienna offer more room and better utility than does the retiring Mazda.

5. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo — Mitsubishi fans have been in an uproar ever since this manufacturer killed off its performance division in 2010. The writing was on the wall five years ago: the Lancer Evolution would eventually be retired. That retirement is here, following a 2016 refresh of the Lancer. Although the mainstream compact Lancer sedan will continue for the foreseeable future, its performance variant has been nixed.

6. Nissan Xterra — Remember the Nissan Xterra? You may have thought that this model had already disappeared, but it has been hanging around in the face of declining sales. As the last body-on-frame midsize SUV produced by this manufacturer (the Pathfinder transitioned to a crossover in 2014), it is going the way of all other models except for the Toyota 4Runner. Like the 4Runner, the Xterra is based on the brand’s midsize truck. Quite simply, Nissan didn’t want to invest additional monies propping up a model that has long lost its mass appeal.

7. Toyota Venza — Toyota, along with Honda experimented with the wagon-like crossover segment, but soon realized the market wasn’t there. Maybe both manufacturers should have considered the Chrysler Pacifica, another tall wagon that was canceled in 2008 following a five-year model run. Both the Toyota Venza and the Honda Accord Crosstour are gone after 2015.

A Look at the Rest

Other models being terminated include the Land Rover LR2, Jaguar XK, the Mini Roadster and Coupe, and the Volkswagen Eos. The Land Rover Defender is also on that list, but a new model should return after a two-year hiatus.

As far as buying a discontinued model, you have a few things to consider:

1), Such models typically are heavily discounted in a bid to clear dealer lots to make way for new vehicles; and

2) As long as the manufacturer maintains a market presence, obtaining parts is not an issue. However, keep in mind that some models may cost you more if the vehicle is imported and the discontinued model is scarce in the first place.

Lastly, if you buy a discontinued model, the new vehicle warranty is still in effect. That’s the peace of mind consumers want as the bumper-to-bumper, powertrain, and rust warranties remain in effect.

Automakers Remain Bullish on Hybrid Electric Vehicles

December 24, 2015 by admin 1 Comment

2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

Mention “hybrid” vehicle to most people and the Toyota Prius comes to mind. That’s expected as the Prius family is by far the most dominant hybrid electric vehicles on the market. Furthermore, Toyota is the chief manufacturer, building twice as many hybrids as the industry combined.

Despite all the attention given to hybrids, these vehicles account for just under 3 percent of all cars on the road today. That’s not an especially tenable market for a vehicle segment touting all things sustainable. And with gas prices currently averaging $2 per gallon, the market for gas-electric hybrids remains especially weak.

Car manufacturers aren’t giving up on the segment and for good reason: automakers must reach progressively higher corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) or fleet averages each model year. By 2025, that average rises to 54.5 mpg, a number that will only be accomplished through much greater adoption of alternative fuel vehicles, including hybrids, pure electric cars, and fuel cell vehicles.

2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid.

2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid.

Hybrid adoption isn’t without its challenges, however. The following are valid concerns expressed by potential consumers and adopters alike:

First, such models are usually more expensive than conventional vehicles, costing consumers 10 to 20 percent more than equivalent models. A greater payout up front can inhibit sales. Further, recouping the added cost becomes especially difficult when gas prices are low.

Second, fuel economy doesn’t always match real world numbers. Achieving 50 mpg with some hybrids is possible, such as with the Honda Accord Hybrid, but that’s only when weather conditions are favorable. In extreme conditions, such as during the winter, fuel economy numbers will drop. Hybrids are most efficient during mild weather, but not when it is hot.

Third, battery degradation is a big concern. Whether you’re looking at purchasing a hybrid or an electric vehicle, the battery packs that supply power to the electric motors gradually degrades notes HybridCars.com. Manufacturers help allay such fears by providing extended warranties for the pack and related components, starting at eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. If the battery fails after the warranty expires, a replacement will run in the thousands of dollars. That’s not a cost many consumers are willing to absorb.

Lithium-Ion Batteries

Fortunately, manufacturers have been devising ways to make hybrid vehicles not just more efficient, but longer lasting. Extending vehicle range, critical for electric vehicles, will have a positive spillover effect on hybrid vehicles which utilize smaller battery packs. Manufacturers are achieving greater efficiencies as follows:

One, by going with efficient lithium-ion (li-ion) batteries instead of traditional nickel-metal-hydride batteries. Li-ion batteries provide longer range and offer a faster recharge for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Two, new capacitors are under development. Making battery packs denser and better able to distribute the electrical flow are among the breakthroughs scientists are working on. MIT is testing such batteries and the research is encouraging. Researchers may develop not just a more efficient battery, but one with recharge times paralleling the refuel time of conventional vehicles. Other organizations and universities working diligently to find solutions include the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, Michigan Technical University, and Stanford University.

Manufacturers are working on a number of ways to make hybrids more palpable to consumers, typically by placing them in high-end models, but mostly as a power boost, and not so much for fuel savings.

Indeed, the Porsche 918 Spyder was one such model, powered by a 4.6-liter, V-8 engine along with a pair of synchronous electric motors mounted on each axle. This hyper gas-electric hybrid makes a combined 875 horsepower and 944 foot-pounds of torque, for a vehicle that can be operated in front, rear, or all-wheel drive modes.

Another super car, the Acura NSX, is also a hybrid. This all-wheel-drive model is powered by a mid-mounted twin turbo V-6 gasoline engine and comes with a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and three electric motors. Combined, the NSX makes 573 horsepower with an output of more than 500 foot-pounds of torque.

Of course, most consumers do not have the discretionary income to afford either model. With a price tag starting at $156,000 and eclipsing $200,000 with every option taken, the NSX amplifies high price and scarcity.

Toyota Prius

The best-selling hybrid in the world is the Toyota Prius.

Making Hybrids Affordable

Coming closer to earth — that would be “purchase attainability” for the rest of us — hybrid adoption will remain low as long as prices are high. Lincoln is currently the only brand selling its base gasoline and hybrid models for the same price ($35,190), effectively absorbing the added cost of the electrified powertrain. That effort has led to more than one in five MKZ models selling as hybrids, well above the take rate for models offering gasoline and hybrid choices.

The Ford Motor Company may be more willing to absorb the cost of a hybrid in a higher profit model, such as the Lincoln MKZ, but like other manufacturers offering a no-cost option in mainstream models may not be a viable solution. Still, to further consumer adoption, lowering the cost of hybrid systems is critical to helping manufacturers reach their goals.

Fall short and steep penalties from the federal government will ensue. Thus, finding a way to cut costs while spreading hybrid usage across more model lines is a must. Technological advancements may ultimately close the gap, building a solid case for hybridization across the industry.

Minivan Surprise: 2016 Kia Sedona SXL

December 23, 2015 by admin 11 Comments

The minivan segment may be ailing, but the Kia Sedona has breathed fresh life into it. If you’re looking for an excellent combination of people carrying capacity and utility, this model may have everything you want.

2016 Kia Sedona

The minivan segment may eventually go the way of the station wagon, but its ultimate demise could very well be put off indefinitely and for one big reason: these models offer the best combination of people carrying capacity and utility, better than what any midsize SUV can supply.

That’s a big claim to make as crossover utility vehicles are doing to the segment what minivans did to wagons. Nevertheless, unless all-wheel drive is a must — and only the Toyota Sienna offers it in this segment — the seating room, storage space and even towing capabilities of a minivan may be everything you need.

Minivans remain stigmatized even though sales continue to hover around 500,000 units per year, but far below the 1.25 million units sold in 2000. Attribute some of that stigmatization to silly advertising — Dodge once called a version of its Grand Caravan a “man van,” while Toyota insists that its Sienna is the original “swagger wagon.” In effect, manufacturers continue to apologize for a segment derided by many, but still loved by not a few.

Indeed, such marketing terms are meant to convince parents, particularly fathers, that minivans are acceptable. But there is no getting around this overarching truth: a minivan is the ultimate people hauler, and may never lose its “soccer mom” mantle unless, of course, children embrace lacrosse or some other sport wholesale.

The Kia Sedona is one such model operating in a segment where Nissan, Toyota, Honda, and Fiat Chrysler are still active. The third-generation Sedona rolled out for the 2015 model year and is enjoying robust sales.

My test model was the top-of-the-line Sedona SXL, a $39,900 vehicle equipped with an SXL technology package ($2,800) and a rear seat entertainment system ($1,095). Its final price came in at $44,690 for a vehicle with a base price of $26,400. Kia offers the Sedona in L, LX ($28,500), EX ($32,700), SX ($36,400), and SXL editions. The Sedona seats seven, but the middle captain’s chairs can be replaced with a bench seat, adding an eighth seating position. As outfitted, the eight-passenger Sedona has the most seating capacity of any Kia model.

So, how do you dress up a vehicle with a silhouette that is the near polar opposite of evocative? Thoughtfully, that’s how.

In Kia’s case, the automaker applied its handsome tiger nose grille to the front fascia and added sleek wraparound headlamp assemblies. Boomerang LED lights separate the front lamps and appear to jump out of the grille. The lower grill opening is narrow and is hemmed in by embrasures containing the optional fog lamps (found in the EX edition on up).

All models are equipped with projector beam headlights, body-color side mirrors with LED turn-signal indicators, and a rear spoiler. Heated outside mirrors (EX), a dual power sunroof (SXL), privacy glass (LX), and chrome side sill accents (optional in the SXL), are available. All models come with sliding side doors — power sliding in the EX, available in the LX and a power liftgate (EX) are also present.

At the rear are wraparound combination lights, chrome embellishments, and reflector lights. Roof rails appear in the LX edition; front and rear skid plates are standard. Alloy wheels are standard across the model line ranging in size from 17 to 19 inches with silver, machine and chrome finishes offered. All editions feature all-season tires.

Inside, the Sedona offers a familiar instrument panel, hearkening to the look of an earlier Kia Sorento panel. This panel, however, contains a pair of cowls containing the tachometer and speedometer. Between the two is a large digital driver’s information center managed by switches found on the face of the steering column.

The center console is marked by a large color display providing Uvo services connectivity, bringing your phone, the audio system and navigation together in one telematics package. Beneath that are switches and knobs for managing the climate control system.

Speaking of the telematics system, I tried four or five times to key in addresses, but each time the result was the same — no address found. Given that one of the addresses was my home, I found the system disappointing. Fortunately, I connected my smartphone and got Sir-inspired voice turn-by-turn navigation to bring me home.

At the base of the center console are the USB and auxiliary input ports. Two cup holders are concealed within a covered compartment with the transmission shifter to the left of the same. At the base of that shifter are additional climate controls for heating and cooling the front seat and for heating the steering wheel. Additional switches to manage the drive control, parking and the camera system are also present. That camera switch provides a front right view of the car, enabling you to navigate tight spaces with ease.

Kia supplies the Sedona will excellent storage room, placing cubbies, compartments and pockets throughout the cabin. On the lower right side of the front center console is a large open area along with a 12-volt outlet. Just above the glove box is a second glove box and it comes with its own doorway.

The front doors have two tiers of storage compartments and also come with beverage holders. But it just may be the armrest storage compartment between the two front seats that will intrigue you the most — it represents not just a deep storage compartment, but one containing a sliding tray as well as an additional USB port and 12-volt outlet. By the way, what appears to be a sunglasses storage compartment above the rear mirror is actually a secondary rear view mirror with a panoramic view of the entire cabin. No storage compartment here, but you get a better view of the entire cabin than what the standard rear view mirror offers.

You can put down the seats as one of the strongest attributes for the third-generation Sedona. Comfortable and firmly bolstered bucket seats are up front with power controls available for the driver from the LX edition on up and for the SX edition on up for the front passenger. All seats are covered in a high-end fabric designed to repel spills. Leather seats are found in the EX, SX and SXL editions.

Kia offers Sedona shoppers a standard three-passenger seat with a fold down center console or slide-and-go seats. In the SXL edition they’re something different, namely, first-class lounge seating. In other words, these seats tilt and the chaise section lifts up just like with your favorite living room lounge chair. These seats are every bit as comfortable as the front bucket seats, but with the chaise feature. Expect your family will fight over who gets these seats.

The third row is composed of a 60-40 split folding bench seat, offering room for three. Access to that row is accomplished by moving, flipping or otherwise pushing the middle seats forward. Unlike most SUVs, access is easy, removing one major form of consternation for vehicle owners. In other words, you’ll make use of a third row seat in much of the same way that owners of the largest SUVs (such as the Chevrolet Suburban) are able to enjoy.

Second-row passengers have access to beverage holders and storage pockets in each sliding door. Two more cup holders are located on the floor at the rear of the center console. That section also has a USB port and a 115-volt outlet. Rear climate control is managed by ceiling mounted switches above and immediately behind the front seat passenger. That’s an odd place for these controls, but at least they’re within reach of one of the second-row passengers.

Your youngest children are best suited for the third row, which comes with two sets of dual cup holders and storage trays embedded in each wall. The seats offer adequate back and hip support, but then I’m being generous — as a near 6-foot tall adult, both thigh support and hip space are wanting.

What isn’t lacking is this seat’s ability to fold and stow when you need the storage capacity. Kia provides easy to follow directions on the back of the larger seat section, instructing you how to release each seat, fold and drop down into the seat well. Incidentally, that seat well is an excellent place for holding your groceries when it isn’t holding your seats.

Kia offers just one powertrain combination across the entire Sedona model line. In fact, it is the only combination you need as its capable 3.3-liter, V-6 engine makes 276 horsepower and 248 foot-pounds of torque and comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The engine delivers power evenly, if a bit slowing at first before delivering an extra measure of non-turbo boost as you press hard on the accelerator. A four-cylinder would have been all wrong for this 4,500-plus pound people mover; a larger V-6 — such as the 3.8-liter found in the Hyundai Genesis sedan most likely would have been too much.

Consider the Sedona’s ride to be relatively soft, yet controlled — not once did I sense much movement from side to side with the exception of minimal torque steer when I pushed hard on the accelerator. Even that subtle shift to the left and back to the right disappeared quickly. Handling is compliant, braking is firm and the interior noise is sufficiently quiet. I give the Kia Sedona high marks in all things noise, vibration and harshness.

Rarely do I pronounce a verdict on new cars, preferring to allow readers to draw their own conclusions. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the latest Kia Sedona is a strong competitor and one that families with multiple children should find to their liking. Sales have tripled over the last year, thus consumers are finding that the current Sedona meets many of their requirements and adds 3,500 pounds of towing capacity to the mix as well.

Buick Sets Sales Record Again

December 22, 2015 by admin 3 Comments

For the third consecutive year, Buick sales have set a record. China is the marque’s strongest market, but the brand remains important to GM in North America.

Buick, the brand almost forgotten by American consumers and nearly canceled as part of GM’s 2009 bankruptcy and restructuring, has once again set an all-time sales record.

GM’s premium mainstream marque surpassed last year’s record pace in mid-December and is expected to top 1.2 million global units sold by year’s end. This is the third consecutive year of record sales for a brand that counts on China to supply most of its growth.

China to the Rescue

Indeed, China is the market that saved Buick. In 2009, when GM was weighing its brand options, Buick was vulnerable. Falling US sales, the oldest customer demographic of any brand, and a poor product mix signaled that something had to be done. China’s market saved the day and the brand, enabling GM to cancel or sell Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer, and Saab instead.

With a new lease on life, GM began to remake Buick with Chinese and American consumers in mind. China, however, has driven the brand and accounts for more than 80 percent of its sales. The effort has worked as the Buick Excelle GT, launched early in 2015, is the country’s best-selling model.

Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick noted, “We think 2016 will be another watershed year for the brand with the global launch of the new 2017 LaCrosse, the North American launch of the Envision, the U.S. launch of the Cascada, and the Chinese launch of a new Verano hatchback. Our products and our customer service have never been better.”

Strong Crossover Sales

Buick customers are embracing the line’s crossover products in both markets. In the US, crossovers now account for 40 percent of all new vehicle sales, but represent 60 percent of Buick’s sales stateside.

Just two products — the diminutive Encore and the three-seat midsize Enclave are accounting for crossover sales. With the arrival of the compact Envision SUV next spring, Buick’s hold on the segment should grow only stronger. In China, GM estimates that it will have sold 130,000 Envisions for the year.

Also helping Buick’s cause is the brand’s success in major consumer surveys, including the J.D. Power U.S. Customer Service Index. For the past two years, Buick has garnered the top spot amongst the mass market brands. It is also the only domestic brand ranked in the Top 10 of the 2015 Consumer Reports Reliability in the US.

Buick Avenir

Waiting in the Wings: Buick Avenir

One model not mentioned in Buick’s product mix is the Avenir, a full-size high-end sedan. Presented in concept form at major auto shows early in 2015, the big Buick would slot above the LaCrosse if GM decided to build it.

China is the logical destination for this sedan, but the US market could see the Avenir too. US sales numbers would likely prove modest, but as a halo product it might raise the visibility of the brand.

Before a possible Avenir arrival, Buick will receive the Chinese-built Envision, the German-built Cascada 2+2 convertible, and a refreshed LaCrosse. The LaCrosse redesign incorporates Avenir styling cues, pointing to a new styling direction for Buick regardless of Avenir placement or not.

Christmas Holiday Traffic to Hit a Record This Year

December 21, 2015 by admin 2 Comments

Record numbers of people will be taking to the road this holiday season. Get there safely this Christmas by keeping in mind the following statistics and advice.

Lexus NX
Not all roads will be clear and traffic-free this holiday travel season.

If you’re planning to travel at least 50 miles this Christmas season, you’ll be joined by nearly 30 percent of the other 320 million Americans who will be doing the same. That’s the prediction of AAA, America’s largest roadside assistance and leisure travel organization.

For the first time more than 100 million people are expected to take to the road for the year-end holiday season, beginning on Dec. 23, 2015, and ending on Jan. 3, 2016. Lower gas prices and slightly higher incomes are combining to make travel more affordable in 2015. AAA has forecast 100.5 million people will travel at least 50 miles across that 12-day period this year.

Lowest Fuel Prices Since 2009

The national average for a gallon of regular grade gasoline is right at $2 per gallon. That’s about 25 cents lower than last year and more than a $1.30 below 2013’s average. By New Year’s Day, AAA says fuel prices will be the lowest we’ve seen in seven years for the holiday.

Inasmuch as Americans will be traveling in record numbers, accidents will rise in conjunction with the increased travel. The independent National Safety Council has forecast 307 deaths and 37,200 serious injuries for the three-day Christmas travel period alone (Dec. 24-26).

Reduce your speed when traveling on slick roads.

Another 346 deaths and 41,900 serious injuries are forecast for the three-day New Year’s travel period (Dec. 31-Jan. 2). The NSC notes that as many as 405 lives could be saved across these two holidays if everyone wore seat belts.

“Too many celebrations are marred by tragedies during the holiday season,” said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “When you are traveling, remember that you are your car’s most important safety feature. Getting to zero deaths on our roadways requires each of us to be safer behind the wheel.”

High Impaired Driving Rates

For its part, AAA is warning against impaired driving throughout the two-holiday season. AAA notes that 21 percent of licensed drivers who drink at least occasionally have admitted to taking to the road when their alcohol consumption may have been close to or over the legal limit.

“As we celebrate the holiday season, AAA urges travelers to be cautious about their safety and the safety of everyone sharing the roadways,” said Marshall Doney, AAA President and CEO. “Ninety-seven percent of licensed drivers consider it unacceptable to drive when they may have had too much to drink, yet there is an average of one alcohol-impaired-driving death every 53 minutes.”

Lexus IS C
Make it a safe and fun Christmas this year!

Get Road Ready

For drivers planning to take to the road for Christmas or New Year’s Day, ensuring that the vehicle is ready for the trip is especially important (see How to Get Your Car Ready for Winter). That may mean replacing your all-season radials with winter tires, especially if your trip involves winter driving conditions. Ensuring that your roadside assistance plan is current is important as insurance for a possible breakdown.

As for the driver and vehicle occupants, the NSC recommends that everyone wear a seat belt. If you plan to drink, then a designated driver is a must. You should also begin your trip rested — get plenty of sleep and take regular breaks along the way.

Avoid using a cell phone while behind the wheel, including hands-free. Importantly, if your teens take to the road — even for short distances — don’t allow them to drive with their friends. The NSC notes that just one teen passenger will increase distractibility as well as your teen’s crash fatality rate by 44 percent.

MPG Leader Mazda Does it Without Hybrids or EVs

December 18, 2015 by admin 1 Comment

The Mazda brand has once again achieved the top miles per gallon (mpg) rating amongst all manufacturers in the US, reaching a fleet-wide average of 29.4 mpg for 2014, according to a report published by the EPA this week.

2016 Mazda CX-5

SKYACTIV Technology Leads the Way

For the third consecutive year, Mazda beat out all comers and did so without the usual hybrid and electric vehicle models other manufacturers rely upon to achieve higher numbers. Instead, the company has been working diligently to improve its engines and transmissions, what it calls “SKYACTIV Technology”. The technology also extends to vehicle platforms as extensive lightweighting and sleek designs are employed.

“At Mazda, driving matters and so does fuel economy,“ said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. “Using SKYACTIV Technology, Mazda has been able to achieve class-leading fuel efficiency in nearly every segment it competes in. This achievement verifies that Mazda has evolved to offer what others can’t, vehicles that are of high-quality, great looking, fun-to-drive and fuel efficient.“

Besides exceptional fuel efficiency, the EPA noted that Mazda is the leader in CO2 emissions, specifically the manufacturer offering the lowest output of all. With a rating of 302 g/mile, the automaker easily outpaced the next two brands, Subaru and Hyundai.

2016 Mazda CX-3

2016 Mazda CX-3.

New Product Offerings

Mazda’s success can be attributed to a host of new products released in recent years, including its compact Mazda3 and midsize Mazda6 car lines, its MX-5 Miata roadster, and a pair of crossover SUVs: the tiny CX-3 and the compact CX-5. Yet another model, the next-generation CX-9 arrives in 2016 and comes outfitted with a turbocharged, 2.5-liter engine, replacing the current V-6. The automaker expects the new CX-9 to deliver “great performance…and excellent fuel economy.”

Granted, Mazda is more of a niche player as it doesn’t match the product offers of the top brands, including Chevrolet, Toyota, Ford, Nissan, and Honda. The first four brands along with Fiat Chrysler are heavily reliant on larger SUVs and trucks, vehicles that skew mpg numbers accordingly.

Other Manufacturers Represented

Subaru, another niche manufacturer, came in second with a fleet-wide average of 27.6 mpg. This automaker relies on all-wheel drive models nearly exclusively, with only the rear-wheel drive BRZ lacking such a system. Subaru offers only one hybrid model: the XV Crosstrek.

Hyundai, with a fleet average of 27.5 mpg is another manufacturer with just one hybrid model: the Sonata Hybrid. This Korean manufacturer has no trucks and also has a relatively low presence in the utility vehicle segment. But it also has larger models such as the Genesis and Equus sedans that neither Mazda nor Subaru offer.

2016 Scion iA.

The Mazda-supplied 2016 Scion iA.

Among the largest manufacturers, Honda (inclusive of Acura) achieved a 27.3 mpg average. All three major US manufacturers brought up the rear with Ford and GM averaging 22.8 mpg and Fiat Chrysler coming in last at 20.8 mpg. These manufacturers dominate the full-size truck segment; FCA also lacks a hybrid or an electric vehicle (other than the California Fiat 500e) to help lift its numbers. FCA also finished dead last in CO2 output.

Incrementally Rising EPA Requirements

All manufacturers have a long way to go before reaching the 54.5 mpg corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) requirement for 2025. In fact, incremental year over year increases are mandated, therefore greater use of alternative fuels and power sources are likely, including for Mazda.

Beginning in 2016, Mazda will discontinue its last V-6 engine even as competitors continue to rely upon both V6s and V8s for some models. However, Mazda hasn’t announced what products will eventually get hybrids, but when it does the automaker will rely upon Toyota’s green technologies to achieve its goals according to Green Car Reports.
