Fiat Chrysler: SUVs Trump Small Cars

January 29, 2016 by admin 1 Comment

More Jeeps and pickup trucks. And partners sought to build small cars.

2015 Chrysler 200S
Future Chrysler 200s may be built by a competitor.

Shop for a small Chrysler product in a few years and that Dodge Dart or Chrysler 200 just may be built by one of the automaker’s competitors. Earlier this week Fiat Chrysler announced its revised North American business plan with future production now geared toward producing more SUVs and fewer cars.

Modified Business Plan

The updated business plan, released by Fiat Chrysler on Wednesday, reveals several important changes about the company’s direction in North America, including:

  • Producing more SUVs and pickup trucks, and fewer small cars.
  • Outsourcing production of two vehicles — the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Dart sedans — to competitors.
  • Adjusting its Alfa Romeo plans by concentrating on bringing its Giulietta sedan to the market during the first half of this year and bringing its midsize SUV online by the end of 2017. Other models are still on tap, but will arrive further out in the production planning cycle.

More Trucks and SUVs

Long top-heavy in pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles, Fiat Chrysler plans to tilt further in that direction as it sees increased permanency in the currently low fuel prices. A global glut in fuel availability has driven down prices tremendously and some analysts believe low prices will be around for many years.

FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne says that the company’s two US-built small cars, Dart and 200, will “run their course.” Instead of funding development of new product, the company plans to reach out to its competitors to build these models for them. The manufacturing plants tasked with building the two models will eventually be converted to building Jeep products and pickups.

The company’s Sterling Heights plant in Michigan currently builds the 200 but will be retooled to build the next generation Ram 1500 pickup trucks due out in 2018. A similar transition is in the works for the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois, producer of the Dodge Dart. That plant also produces the Jeep Compass and the Jeep Patriot.

Additional Product Plans

Other important points of the Fiat Chrysler business plan include:

Partnerships are in the offing. Fresh on the heels of partnering with Mazda to build the Fiat 124 Spider, FCA will seek additional partners to help it maintain a presence in the small and midsize car categories. Such collaboration between automakers is nothing new, but this practice has increased steadily over the past several years.

New hybrid models are on the way. FCA will step up its hybrid game by offering more models across multiple platforms. Even the Jeep Wrangler and the Ram 1500 pickup truck will receive hybrid variants.

No new manufacturing plants are planned. FCA plans to maintain its current manufacturing plant count and won’t build an additional plant in Toledo as had been expected. Instead, FCA will utilize its current footprint as it leans toward building more Jeeps and Ram pickup trucks.

Build me a diesel. FCA will also bring a diesel Wrangler Unlimited to the market, but likely not for five years. Even so, a diesel-powered Wrangler would appear a few years before a hybrid variant is released.

Making More Money

Fiat Chrysler’s profitability has always hinged on its North American market. By producing even more Jeeps and pickup trucks and fewer cars, the automaker’s profitability picture should remain robust for several years.

At the same time, its greater commitment to these models could leave the company exposed if consumer tastes suddenly shift following a huge spike in fuel prices. That’s a gamble the automaker is willing to take as consumers flock to a variety of high-profile vehicles.

Consumer love for pickup trucks and SUVs is at an all-time high. To that end, GMC is taking advantage of our seemingly insatiable desire for all things high profile vehicle, by responding with a special edition of the Sierra’s All Terrain model, a package known officially as the GMC All Terrain X.

The special edition model offers exclusive content, including enhancements to the pickup’s off-road capability. The All Terrain X features an assertive countenance dressed in a monochromatic demeanor.

An Off-Road Enthusiasts Dream?

GMC says that the All Terrain X meets the desire of off-road enthusiasts to deliver a personalized truck much in the same way the Sierra Denali also does. The special edition Sierra provides an amalgamation of off-road competence and original style, borne out through a special package offering the following:

  • 4WD with Eaton locking rear differential
  • Z71 Off-Road suspension package with Rancho monotube shocks, high-capacity air cleaner, Hill Descent Control and underbody transfer case shield
  • Rear Park Assist
  • Unique grille with body-color surround and tinted chrome accents; body-color front and rear bumpers (rear bumper with corner steps)
  • Spray-on bedliner
  • All-Terrain-logo instrument cluster
  • Inclinometer in the driver information center

“Styling is the biggest influence on Sierra customers and the new Sierra All Terrain X builds on that with a more aggressive, personalized appearance that complements its exceptional capability,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing. “It joins other models such as the new Sierra Elevation and premium Sierra Denali to offer more choices for finding the premium truck that matches customers’ style and capability needs.”

Exclusive to the SLT Edition

The All Terrain X is offered exclusively in the 2016 Sierra 1500 4WD crew cab/short box models with SLT trim. This model builds on the standard All Terrain package to add the following:

  • 265/65R18SL Mud-Terrain-rated Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac MT tires, designed for off-road competence in dirt, gravel and mud, with on-road composure in dry, wet and wintry conditions
  • 18 x 8.5-inch black aluminum wheels
  • Sport side steps (black)
  • Bed-mounted sport bar (black) designed to support the accessory off-road LED lighting package
  • High-performance LED headlamps
  • Performance exhaust system, which bumps output of the 5.3L V-8 engine to 365 horsepower and adds an aggressive note
  • Body-color door handles and body-side moldings
  • Black exterior mirrors, belt moldings and B-pillars
  • Interior floor liners
  • Available colors: Onyx Black, Summit White, Stone Blue Metallic, Iridium Metallic, Crimson Red Tintcoat, Light Steel Gray Metallic.

2015 GMC Sales

GMC Sierra sales rose by a robust 17 percent in 2015 with overall truck deliveries up by 23 percent. GM’s truck brand outpaced Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac for 2015 as its overall US sales rose by 11.3 percent.

By far, GMC’s best seller is its full-size Sierra, accounting for 224,139 of the brand’s total 558,697 sales last year. That number was twice the sales of its second best selling model, the compact Terrain SUV.

Sales of the GMC Sierra All Terrain X will begin this spring. The price will be announced closer to its release date.

Toyota Reigns Supreme Four Years Running

January 27, 2016 by admin 1 Comment

Volkswagen’s quest to overtake Toyota will have to wait at least another year as the German automaker deals with more than 11 million recalled models.

2016 Toyota Prius
The Prius is just one of many models powering Toyota to world leadership.

Once again, Toyota Motors is the largest producer of passenger and commercial vehicles in the world, edging out the Volkswagen Group and the General Motors Company for that honor reports Automotive News.

At the beginning of the year, it appeared Toyota’s three-year run was in jeopardy as a rapidly expanding Volkswagen seemed to have the momentum to overtake Toyota. But then something else intervened, namely a diesel engine scandal.

That scandal revealed that the German automotive giant had fudged data regarding its “clean diesel” engines, with the California Air Resources Board and the federal Environmental Protection Agency uncovering the truth. Volkswagen’s quest to overtake Toyota was doomed and three years ahead of schedule.

The scandal was brought to light in mid-September, effectively putting a stop to new diesel-powered vehicle sales for the Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche brands. Those sales, accounting for more than 25 percent of the Volkswagen brand’s US total, assured Toyota its place on top would continue.

In 2015, Toyota sold 10.15 million new vehicles worldwide, falling 0.8 percent over 2014. Toyota counts sales from its subsidiaries, Daihatsu Motors and Hino Motors, in its figure.

Volkswagen sales fell by 2 percent with the automaker moving approximately 9.9 million vehicles. In third place was General Motors, whose seven-plus decade reign as the world’s top automotive producer ended in 2008 when Toyota moved past GM.

In 2011, GM overtook Toyota for one year as the Japanese automaker recovered from a devastating earthquake and tsunami that shook its home country. Last year, GM sales rose slightly by 0.2 percent, finishing just above 9.8 million units.

If Toyota maintains its position for a fifth consecutive year it may be due in part to buying out the 49 percent share of Daihatsu it doesn’t already own, a company with a strong presence in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Toyota also has the next-generation Prius to show for it, but with fuel prices continuing to fall, demand for hybrids is tumbling with it. Nevertheless, Prius is the cornerstone of Toyota’s green efforts, with more than a dozen other hybrid models sold under the Toyota and Lexus marques. Toyota is also introducing its first production fuel cell model, the hydrogen-powered Mirai.

Globally, the world’s automakers produced 89.5 million vehicles in 2014 according to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers; 2015 data is not yet final. Sales in 2014 rose by 3 percent over 2013, but were up 34 percent since 2005. The global auto industry has a rising consumer class to thank for the increased sales, although economic headwinds may show an even smaller increase for 2015.

Boasting about sales may seem counter productive and lead to the same types of cheating Volkswagen is now known for. At the same time manufacturers with strong sales can also point to economies of scale and the attendant savings that come with spreading overhead across more vehicles sold.

About the 2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan

January 26, 2016 by admin 2 Comments

Honda’s next-generation fuel cell Clarity will launch by the end of the year in California. The five-passenger sedan will retail for about $60,000 and its targeted monthly lease cost should come in under $500. Honda announced its plans for the fuel cell vehicle at the Washington Auto Show last week just as a historic blizzard was bearing down on the area.

Honda is not new to the fuel cell market, having leased the FCX Clarity in Japan and southern California in limited numbers. Indeed, the company points to 1999 as the year its first prototype fuel cell vehicles the FCX-1 and FCX-2 were introduced. In subsequent years the automaker released updated prototypes as well as its first limited-production models.

2017 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell
The all-new Honda Clarity Fuel Cell.

Next-Generation Fuel Cell Vehicle

The new model appears vastly improved over the previous Honda FCX Clarity. Honda says it offers revamped packaging, expanded interior space, improved performance, and a driving range anticipated to top 300 miles. Furthermore, Honda estimates the Clarity’s refuel time will range between two and five minutes.

The platform underpinning the Honda Clarity will also support the automaker’s next-generation Honda plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), expected to launch in the US in 2018. Separately, a reengineered Accord Hybrid will go on sale this spring. Additional “green” products are also in the planning stages.

“The new Clarity Fuel Cell and Accord Hybrid arriving this year, along with the new plug-in hybrid coming by 2018, are critical steps toward a new generation of Honda advanced environmental vehicles and a true volume pillar for Honda and our product portfolio in the U.S.,” said John Mendel, executive vice president, Automobile Division, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The Clarity Fuel Cell is a potential game changer because it offers an uncompromising, zero emissions customer experience, with performance, utility, range and refueling time on par with today’s gasoline-powered cars.”

California and an Expanding Fuel Cell Network

Making the Honda Clarity fuel cell sedan available in California only makes sense as the Golden State is the only area in the country where a hydrogen fuel station infrastructure is in development.

That infrastructure is composed of nine public stations with an additional 18 funded and expected to become operational in the next few years.

The state has an aggressive hydrogen transportation initiative in place with a goal to fund at least 100 hydrogen stations within the next eight years.

About the 2017 Honda Clarity

The new hydrogen model features several advancements, including a fuel cell stack that is 33 percent more compact than its predecessor as well as 60 percent denser. Comparable in size to a V-6 engine, the system now fits completely under the hood of the sedan, freeing up room in the cabin.

The Honda Clarity also offers a design closer in appearance to the current Accord sedan. The automaker opted for a low, wide aerodynamic body with clean character lines. LED exterior lighting and 18-inch aluminum wheels are also present.

Inside, the FCEV is marked by streamlined controls and makes ample use of higher end materials. A number of driver-assisted technologies are included such as Honda Sensing, representing a suite of safety and security attributes. Further, all Clarity models will be compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Hydrogen Refueling Station Network

As the Honda Clarity joins the Hyundai Tucson FCEV and Toyota Mirai FCEV already on the market, making these models available outside of California is a priority.

To that end, American Honda joined the public-private partnership H2USA in May 2013, what assembles car manufacturers, government agencies, hydrogen suppliers, and the hydrogen and fuel cell industries in an effort to synchronize research and pinpoint practical solutions to establish stations that can deliver economical, clean hydrogen fuel across the country.

In 2014, Honda invested $13.8 million in FirstElement Fuel in an effort to speed up that company’s infrastructure development in California. Moreover, the automaker has a long-term collaborative agreement with General Motors to jointly develop the next-generation of fuel cell systems and hydrogen storage technologies, with 2020 the goal for actualization.

Hyundai Genesis Sedan: Grand Finale!

January 25, 2016 by admin 7 Comments

A final look at the outgoing Hyundai Genesis.

2016 Hyundai Genesis Sedan

The Hyundai Genesis is marketed as a “premium luxury sedan” and is the first upscale model sold by this Korean manufacturer in North America. Introduced in 2009, it was soon joined by the unrelated Genesis Coupe and the still larger Hyundai Equus.

Separate Genesis Marque

Late in 2015, Hyundai announced the creation of a new luxury brand called Genesis. The flagship Equus is transitioning to the Genesis G90 and the current Hyundai Genesis will become the Genesis G80. When the G80 appears it will represent a mid-product cycle update of the Hyundai Genesis and assume the G80 naming convention for the 2017 model year. The second-generation Genesis was introduced for the 2015 model year.

Genesis is being separated from Hyundai to allow it to assume its own identity and to be better positioned to take on the likes of Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and other luxury marques. By 2020, six Genesis brand models will be offered. As for the showrooms, you’ll still find Genesis models sold under the same roof as Hyundai. At least for now.

2016 Hyundai Genesis Sedan

2016 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 RWD

A 2016 Hyundai Genesis 3.8 RWD was a recent weekly driver, representing the base edition in the product line. Notably, Hyundai offers the 3.8 edition in standard rear-wheel drive ($38,750) and available all-wheel drive ($41,250) as well as in a 5.0 Ultimate edition ($53,850), but in rear-wheel drive only.

The 3.8 edition denotes a model powered by a 3.8-liter, V-6 engine, while the 5.0 edition represents a model powered by a 5.0-liter, V-8. The constitutive difference, of course, is in performance as well as with its amenities — the V-6 makes 311 horsepower and the V-8 is rated at 420 horsepower. Both power plants are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Hyundai delivered a Genesis with all the goods supplied in the V-8 sedan, except for the engine. By ordering three packages — Signature ($3,900), Tech ($3,500) and Ultimate ($3,500) — you get a well-appointed V6-powered luxury sedan for $50,600.

That’s about the same price you’ll pay for a base BMW 5 Series (528i), but in the BMW you’re looking at a turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 240 horsepower. It would cost you about $5,000 more to upgrade to comparable power, never mind coming away with base amenities (e.g.., imitation leather seats).

2016 Hyundai Genesis Sedan

Elegant Countenance, Upscale Interior

I’ve been an admirer of the Hyundai Genesis since the sedan arrived stateside, but much more so with the second-generation model. From stem to stern, the current Genesis offers a style matching the European brands. The front fascia features a bold, horizontal six-slat grille with strong creases pushing out from both sides of the upper portion of the grille and running across the hood to the windshield line. On either side of the grille are large, wrap around lighting assemblies containing boomerang LED daytime running lights. At the base of the fascia are LED fog lamps featuring single rows of six lights each. The front fascia establishes the pattern for this model, proclaiming to all that this is no inconsequential conveyance.

The sedan’s stately profile is marked with upper character lines running from the headlights to the tail lamps, midriff lines connecting the wheels, and body sculpting located just above the chrome-bedecked rocker panels. A sloping roofline, an ever so slightly rising belt line and distinct alloy wheels are also present. From the rear, this model features oversized combination lamps with LED lights, a raised deck, reflector accents and dual embedded exhaust ports.

Inside, the cabin is bright, cavernous and elegantly appointed. You’ll find wood and aluminum trim with nary a cheap plastic covering in sight. The test model spoiled me with genuine matte finish wood, an essential ingredient for the included Ultimate package. That package also brought in a full-color head-up display, a power trunk lid, a premium 9.2-inch touchscreen with navigation, a 17-speaker Discrete 7 Logic audio system, and an enhanced climate control system.

2016 Hyundai Genesis Sedan

The Signature package brought in the power tilt and telescopic steering column, a power tilt and slide sunroof, an integrated memory system for the heated and ventilated front seats, automatic dimming side mirrors, LED fog lights with a rearview camera, blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, and a power rear sunshade with manual rear side window sunshades.

And just as the man on television opines, “But that’s not all!,” the tech package added still more amenities. Included were: premium leather seat surfaces, a power driver seat cushion extender, a haptic steering wheel, and an electronic parking brake. Several safety features were added too, including lane departure warning and lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and front and rear parking sensors.

A Premium Luxury Sedan

Suffice to say, a Hyundai Genesis without its many adornments might align closer to a Chrysler 300 or a Toyota Avalon, but the full-optioned amenities are what make this premium model extraordinary. Even the look and feel of the switches and knobs conveys its higher-end aura, underscoring the painstaking attention its designers performed on every aspect of the Genesis.

2016 Hyundai Genesis Sedan

Luxury shoppers in this segment routinely want ultimate power and for them nothing less than the available V-8 would be acceptable. But the V-6 shouldn’t be quickly dismissed as its 311-hp output moves this sedan with competence — the 8-speed transmission shifts smoothly and quickly through the gear ratio.

Choose rear-wheel drive and place this sedan in sport mode, and you’ll enjoy straightforward handling, optimum steering and a thoroughly comfortable ride. Opt for all-wheel drive and the handling quotient improves accordingly.

What you won’t experience is pitching and diving as you handle the curves; braking is firm with no fade detected. Punch the V-6 and you’ll hit highway speeds in about seven seconds. If acceleration is a priority, then choose the V-8 to shave a full two seconds off that time.

Taking it to the Europeans

If the Hyundai Genesis were a mainstream model it would be categorized as a full-size sedan. On the luxury level, it is a midsize model and a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac CTS, Audi A6, Lexus GS, and the aforementioned BMW product.

2016 Hyundai Genesis Sedan

Where the previous generation Hyundai Genesis had the looks, but not the driving feel rivaling the prominent European brands, the latest model is vastly improved, thanks in large part to Lotus-assisted chassis improvements, especially in the way the sedan handles.

Those changes combined with the Genesis’ beautiful countenance, high-end interior, and value proposition make this model a competitor. In the final analysis, you don’t need to wait for the Hyundai Genesis to morph into the Genesis G80 to come away with an effective European-like executive sedan.

Power Up: Ford Focus ST!

January 22, 2016 by admin 17 Comments

The next lesson in the School of Speed.

2015 Ford Focus ST

Ford Performance, Focus ST style.

Tangerine Scream was the perfect name for the tri-coat finish smothering the body of a delicious 2015 Ford Focus ST five-door hatchback tasked with teasing and pleasing me recently. Indeed, the ST’s bright finish served as an exclamation point on a model with more attitude between the wheels than some far more expensive sports cars.

If you aren’t familiar with “ST,” then allow me to give you a quick lesson in the school of all things speed. ST is a line of sporty vehicles from Ford Performance, representing the racing arm of the Ford Motor Company. The ST line is currently composed of the Ford Fiesta ST (see my Dec. 2014 review of the same here) and the Ford Focus ST. Moreover, a near ST-like Fusion Sport sedan is due for release in 2017.

Both ST models are new to Ford fans in the US, but the line has long been familiar to European fans. North American car buyers now have access to these models because of the company’s “One Ford” initiative: in essence, Ford is now selling nearly all its models across multiple markets.

Previously, some of Europe’s best vehicles were held back from the US. Beginning in 2008 that all changed as the Euro-spec Fiesta and Focus were sent across the Atlantic. New ST models followed and now Ford has a pair of hot hatchbacks to segue to the Mustang.

2015 Ford Focus ST

So, what’s the big deal about the Focus ST? Besides its tricked-out visage with special skirting, alloy wheels, summer tires, unique lights and fascias, and eye-popping colors, you also get a pumped-up interior. The Recaro seats literally make the cabin, enfolding the driver in a secure embrace.

The Focus ST also serves up a thickly padded, leather-wrapped steering wheel with a requisite flat bottom. A bank of three gauges situated on top of the dashboard and at the apex of the center stack displays turbocharger boost pressure, oil temperature and oil pressure information. Further, aluminum pedals, satin chrome door grab handles, illuminated aluminum scuff plates, and available Ford SYNC telematics are among the other stand out features you’ll find.

Of course, this model would offer little to truly cheer about unless it came equipped with a manual transmission. The 6-speed gearbox provides a short throw shifter, for quick work up and down the gear range. A USB port sits just fore of the stick, but it was busted out in the test model. In addition, a second port is stuffed underneath the armrest/storage compartment and is better suited to keep your smartphone secure as you power through every curve.

Exterior and interior embellishments are fine, but it is what resides under the hood that best defines this model. In this case you’ll find a potent 2.0-liter, Ford EcoBoost engine. EcoBoost is Ford’s engine brand combining one or more turbochargers with direct injection and variable valve technology, in a bid to squeeze more power out of a smaller footprint. Introduced in 2009, EcoBoost is now available across nearly the entire Ford range, giving the automaker an important marketing advantage.

2015 Ford Focus ST

In the Focus ST, the front-wheel-drive compact hatchback certainly benefits from EcoBoost as its relatively light weight (3,223 pounds) and smaller footprint enhance performance. Producing a whopping 252 horsepower and 275 foot-pounds of torque, the Focus ST has what it needs to take on the puissant Volkswagen Golf GTI, long the performance leader in the segment.

Which of the two models is faster is a matter of debate, something I won’t address here. The important thing is Volkswagen has a skillful competitor — no other manufacturer has been able to trump the Golf GTI to date. That is, until now.

Press the start button, engage the clutch, shift the transmission stick, and you’re ready to commence with an unusual experience. It begins with the sonance of the throaty engine where every decibel of its turbo goodness wafts into the cabin to annunciate its presence. The exhaust system answers in a cacophony of hums, toots and wails, proclaiming to all the pocket rocket’s proximity.

You’ll need to grasp the steering wheel firmly with your left hand as you flick the shifter with your right hand while working the pedals — torque steer is present and is supplied in abundance. To the uninitiated, the feeling may be entirely unnerving — why is my steering wheel suddenly shifting from side to side as I zoom down the road?

2015 Ford Focus ST

The answer is simple — copious amounts of power sent to the front wheels leads to steering wheel movement. You really aren’t in danger of losing control, but you need to keep the Focus ST pointed as you shoot. All-wheel drive would relieve much of that sensation, a feature of the upcoming and even faster 2017 Ford Focus RS. (By the way the new RS went into production a few days before I returned the ST — yes!)

How fast does the Focus ST go? Well, I never approached the upper end of its speed range — 150 mph, but I did take it to my favorite twisty roads to peel out and gauge how quickly it reached highway speeds. With the front tires squealing as I floored the accelerator and made quick work of the clutch and shifter, I found myself topping 60 mph while yet in third gear. That’s just above 6 seconds flat for the diminutive racer and faster than nearly anything else in the small car range.

Once you’re up to speed, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with this model’s competence on twisty roads. It’s a quick steering beast with stiffly tuned shocks and excellent grip up front. That’s the confidence you need for curvilinear roads and not something you’ll find in an ordinary hatchback. And the Focus ST is the antithesis of ordinary.

2015 Ford Focus ST

If the standard arrangement isn’t enough, a factory supported performance modification package from Ford Performance Parts and Mountune should do the trick. Specifically, the Mountune MP275 performance upgrade boosts engine performance to 275 horsepower and 296 foot-pounds of torque. You also can trick out your ride further by opting for a torque blasting differential, a front strut tower brace, lowering springs and other enhancements that may ultimately add as much as $5,000 to your cost. That’s about $35,000 to get the ultimate in driving dynamics, but still well below the price of a fully optioned Ford Mustang — two very different models derived from the same DNA.

What’s my verdict on the Ford Focus ST? Its a heck of a fun driver and a fantastic alternative to established, more traditional models such as the Mustang, Challenger and Camaro. It also gives Ford a strong entry in a segment led by the Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Personally, I’m looking forward to the Focus RS’ arrival this spring, a top-of-the-range model that promises to slay yet another segment dragon, this time in the form of the Subaru WRX STI. By then, you’ll be prepared to take your next lesson in the School of Speed.

Painless at the Pump: Falling Gas Prices Thrill Consumers

Much lower fuel prices means “pain at the pump” is now a thing of the past. How low will gas prices go? Will prices stay low for the foreseeable future?

2015 Ford Expedition.
SUVs such as this Ford Expedition are increasingly cheaper to refuel.

Gas prices are tumbling and in some areas of the country are the lowest we’ve seen this century. As of this writing, the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline sits at $1.861, according to Gas Buddy, the fuel price tracking website.

Driving the lower prices has everything to do with supply and demand. Domestic production has nearly doubled over the past few years and countries such as Canada and Iraq are producing more oil year after year. And despite feeling the squeeze from the west, Russia continues to pump oil. Thus, with the US essentially not needing much fuel from abroad, its former suppliers are looking for new markets. Those markets aren’t as lucrative as North America and Europe, therefore prices have fallen accordingly.

A Price War in Michigan

The new, lower prices are still above the $1.592 average reached on December 29, 2008. However, prices in some areas of the country are much lower as gas price wars have erupted. Notably, one station in northern Michigan dropped its price to 47 cents per gallon for regular gasoline earlier this week. Prices around Houghton Lake later rebounded, but one station is still charging $1.30 per gallon this morning.

Today’s fuel prices are part of a downward trend that began about 18 months ago when prices were averaging $3.58 per gallon. The international price for crude oil, once above $100 per barrel, is now below $30 per barrel and is expected to continue to fall. As a matter of fact, Iran is expected to produce upwards of 500,000 barrels of oil daily as economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic have been lifted. As long as supply outstrips demand, lower prices at the pump should continue.

Toyota Camry Hybrid.
Demand for electrified vehicles such as this Toyota Camry Hybrid continues to fall.

Consumers are, of course, elated with the lower prices. Refueling a large SUV once cost more than $125, a painful price point that had people avoiding models such as the Chevrolet Suburban and the Ford Expedition. That same Suburban with a 31-gallon fuel tank might now set the owner back by approximately $50 with the tank nearly empty.

Greater Demand for SUVs

Falling fuel prices continue to spark greater interest in pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. In 2015, US consumers purchased 17,470,499 new vehicles, setting an all-time record. Of that number, 9,729,587 were classified as light trucks, leaving 7,740,912 passenger cars, according to Motor Intelligence by Autodata Corp. Thus, 55.69 percent of all new consumer vehicles purchased last year were either SUVs or pickup trucks.

A scan of fuel prices across the nation this morning reveals sharply divergent prices and those prices are not always dependent on the region. Oklahoma currently holds the distinction of offering the lowest gas prices, averaging $1.539 across the Sooner State. Prices are averaging even lower in the northeast corner of the state, reaching $1.392 per gallon this morning.

On the other end of the pricing spectrum is California with prices averaging $2.72 per gallon or about a dime higher than the second most expensive state, Hawaii. For the most part, prices in the Golden State are tracking below $3 per gallon, although motorists in Mono County are still paying $3.502 per gallon on average. If you live in Yuba County, you’re saving more than a dollar per gallon as average prices there are coming in at $2.335 per gallon.

>Pickups, such as this GMC Sierra 2500 Denali are in great demand.

Looking Ahead

Fuel prices are not likely to rebound in the immediate future. Even as oil production is lowered, demand remains flat in many countries. As long as oil production outstrips consumption, we’ll see lower prices maintained. That also means consumers will continue to gravitate to larger and heavier vehicles with sedans and especially electric vehicles left in the dust.

Benchmark This: 2016 Honda Accord

January 20, 2016 by admin 21 Comments

The Civic and Accord are among the best-known model names in the entire auto industry. The Honda Accord was introduced in 1976, three years after the Honda Civic went on sale in the United States.

Initially a compact car, the Accord has grown through the years and is now categorized by the US EPA as a large car. For competition purposes, it is still considered a midsize model, with the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and the Ford Fusion among its chief rivals. Other models to consider include the Hyundai Sonata, Chevrolet Malibu, Kia Optima and the Mazda6.

Through the years, Honda has offered the Accord in sedan, hatchback, and coupe body styles. Even today, the Accord remains the lone model in the segment to offer a coupe, although the hatchback is long gone. Honda also offers something else that is becoming nearly impossible to find: a 6-speed manual transmission.

Six Trim Levels, Two Engines

Honda offers the Accord Sedan in LX ($22,205), Sport ($24,265), EX ($25,580), EX-L ($28,670), EX-L V-6 ($30,745), and Touring ($34,680) trim levels. Add $800 to the first three editions to upgrade to a continuously variable transmission, what is standard on the EX-L on up. The first four editions are also powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine making upwards of 189 horsepower at 6,400 RPM and 182 foot-pounds of torque at 3,900 RPM.

The two top trim levels are powered by a 3.5-liter, V-6 engine making 278 horsepower and 252 foot-pounds of torque and paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. That’s just the combination I found under the hood of my recent test model, a 2016 Accord four-door sedan — specifically, an EXLN Sens V6 edition.

The added letters “N” and “Sens” are important. Models with an “N” bring in navigation and those identified with “Sens” have Honda Sensing, a collection of safety features. More about Sens later.

Mid Product Cycle Update

We’re up to the ninth generation for the Honda Accord, the most recent model was introduced in 2013. For 2016 it received a mid product cycle update, including updated front and rear fascias with the expanded use of LED lighting. Honda also tweaked the chassis to make it more rigid and by adding new shock absorbers and a retuned electric power steering system.

Other changes brought in the first application of 19-inch wheels, where available; a new 7-inch color display audio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; a newly available 60-40 split-folding rear seat; heated rear seats, rain sensing wipers, and parking sensors. In addition, the coupe body style now offers the top-of-the-line Touring edition, matching the sedan.

Honda is a fairly new supplier of vehicles for my test fleet, but its stellar reputation precedes it. I remember when the first Honda models were sold in the US. I also recall when my friends began to switch in droves to Honda products in a bid to find more efficient and better built small cars. Invariably, mention “Honda” and “Toyota” also comes up — both companies have earned their lofty reputations.

Elegant, Upscale Visage

The most recent Accord model may surprise you, a sedan with a stately appearance. Its front end is marked by a chrome-bedecked grille and flanked by wraparound headlamp assemblies with LED daytime running lights. A sporty lower fascia includes large embrasures housing the available LED fog lights.

The Accord’s profile is marked by an ever so slightly rising belt line, a sloping roof line and by a pair of distinctive upper and lower character lines. My test model was outfitted with unique 17-inch alloy wheels for a high-end touch. The Accord features a raised rear deck with wrap around combination lamps. This edition also has chrome embellishments, rear reflector lights and dual exhaust ports.

As Honda’s flagship sedan, the Accord makes available such amenities as push button start, dual-zone climate control, leather-trimmed seats, and a 10-way power driver’s seat. Regardless of the model, all Accords offer generous standard equipment, including alloy wheels, daytime running lights, automatic headlights, a rear view camera with guidelines, and Bluetooth connectivity.

You also get power accessories, a tilt and telescopic steering column, cruise control, a sunglasses holder, driver’s and front passenger’s illuminated vanity mirrors, map lights, and a cargo area light.

Available amenities include keyless entry, push button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, steering wheel-mounted controls, a power moonroof, heated seats, and leather seats. The Sport edition brings in aluminum pedals.

2016 Honda Accord

Instrument Panel and Center Stack

The Accord’s instrument panel is dominated by a large speedometer dial with a tachometer on the left and a dual oil/fuel gauge on the right. In the middle of the speedometer dial is a small, digital screen displaying such driver information as the outside temperature, odometer, oil life remaining, and safety features.

The center stack features not one, but two color displays. The top display is for the audio system, the bottom display is for telematics and also features finger swipe controls for the audio system — not my favorite design, but you’ll get used to it fairly quickly. The rest of the center stack is composed of switches to manage the climate control system, a closed storage compartment with a USB port, and an open storage area with a 12-volt outlet.

Between the front seats is the transmission shifter, flanked by the available heat warming switches. A pair of cup holders, the emergency brake, and the requisite covered arm rest/storage compartment are also present. That latter compartment is also where you’ll find another USB port and a second 12-volt outlet.

The Accord is designed to hold five people and it does so without compromise. The driver’s seat is very comfortable and all controls are at the ready and easily decipherable. The test model has premium touches throughout, including leather, wood trim, aluminum, and soft touch materials.

The rear seat is roomy with excellent head, shoulder and hip room. Even legroom is sufficient and that’s important in this segment. The test model had a fixed back seat; opting for a fold down seat makes sense, especially if lugging the occasional yard sale find is part of your experience.

The Accord comes with drink holders and storage compartments in each door. Two cup holders are up front and another two are in the back. Under the cargo floor is your spare tire, a temporary one at that.

Honda Accord Safety Features

When it comes to safety, the Honda Accord has you covered. You get the usual traction control, stability control, brake assist, electronic brake distribution, and anti-lock brakes as well as the aforementioned rear view camera. Also available is forward collision warning, lane departure warning, collision mitigation braking, and a road departure mitigation system.

But Honda doesn’t stop there. Lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control are two of the four driver-assist or Honda Sensing technologies available across the model line. Honda LaneWatch and automatic high beam headlights are also available. All four are included with the Touring edition.

My favorite feature is Honda LaneWatch, one that increases visibility on the right side of the car when the right turn signal indicator is activated. Specifically, a camera mounted below the right outside mirror turns on and gives you a wider view of the road behind you with that moving picture displayed on the center screen. Honda calls LaneWatch a “visibility enhancement;” I call it one of the best safety features available in a mainstream model.

2016 Honda Accord

On the Road

V-6 engines have few takers in the midsize segment, if they’re offered at all. Mazda, Ford, Chevrolet, and Hyundai are among the manufacturers without a V-6 — each relies on normally aspirated and turbocharged four-cylinder engines instead.

Honda’s V-6 should be familiar with the brand faithful as it is standard in the Odyssey minivan, Pilot SUV and will also power the upcoming Ridgeline midsize pickup truck. Its a strong motor at that and in the Accord it provides more power than what most shoppers will need.

Surprisingly, torque steer is not a big deal in this Accord. You’ll feel a slight tug when applying full power, but the front end remains composed. Honda must have found the right combination of steering feel and engine revs to mitigate the sensation.

Off the mark acceleration is excellent and the V-6 will have you roaring down the highway in no time. The ride is smooth and quiet — I’ve driven a host of luxury sedans and the Accord compares favorably. The sedan feels solid, the steering is about average but is far from numb. The Accord certainly doesn’t tackle the curves with deftness — at the same time you won’t find yourself fighting with the steering wheel and tapping on the brakes to maintain control. Braking is firm and uneventful.

The Verdict is In

The midsize sedan segment is what it is largely due to the work of the Honda Accord. This model has set the bar for how an American family sedan should look and perform, effectively requiring competitors to tow the line or get left behind. Furthermore, the top end of the Accord range presents a complete package with style, quality, reliability and a premium experience provided.

Premium Sports Sedan: 2016 Buick Regal GS

January 19, 2016 by admin 5 Comments

2016 Buick Regal
2016 Buick Regal.

Making the transition from a mainstream brand to luxury marque may mean consumers end up committing to a larger cash outlay than what they prefer. On the other hand, the Buick brand provides an intermediary step between the two choices, something few nameplates can claim. In effect, Buick makes it possible for Chevrolet owners to ease into luxury before deciding whether Cadillac or some other high-priced make is right for them.

Buick Regal Competition and Model History

Buick’s competition has faded in recent years as Ford’s Mercury brand is gone and Chrysler now competes with Chevrolet. At the same time, Acura and Lincoln products are fair game, offering a premium feel much in the same way that Buick does.

The Buick Regal is one such model that competes with the upscale brands. Its chief competition includes the Acura ILX, Audi A3, and the Lincoln MKZ. The Regal is based on the Opel Insignia and is best compared to midsize mainstream models or premium compact sedans.

2016 Buick Regal

Now in its sixth model year, the current generation Regal is nothing like the previous models. The name can be traced all the way back to 1973 when GM released a family of intermediate models for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Buick. This collection of rear-wheel drive coupes and sedans were downsized in 1978 and yielded some of the most noteworthy models, including the Grand National and GNX. Beginning in 1988 and lasting through two generational changes before its cancellation in 2004, even smaller versions of the Regal were built. GM had also switched to a front-wheel drive layout by then.

After a seven-year hiatus, the Regal name was resurrected and the first models were imported from Germany. However, a factory in Oshawa, Ontario, was soon given the honors to build the North American-spec model and has served in that capacity since.

Buick offers the Regal in 1SV, Standard, Premium II, and GS trim levels. Front-wheel is standard across the model line; all-wheel drive is available in the two upper trim levels.

2016 Buick Regal

Two Engine Choices and a Lower Price

Upon its 2011 release, a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine was standard and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder was available. Both engines are still used and are paired with six-speed automatic transmissions. From 2012 to 2015 you could opt for a 6-speed manual gearbox. Unfortunately, sales never justified the stick’s existence, thus this option was quietly removed for 2016.

Starting in 2012, Buick began offering a mild hybrid system called eAssist, what enables the Regal to achieve 36 mpg on the highway. Originally offered to all customers, the hybrid is now provided to fleet customers only.

The 2016 Buick Regal GS is priced from $36,490 and represents a new, lower price for this sport sedan. Indeed, when I tested a 2015 version last spring, the base price came in at $39,810 or $3,320 higher than the 2016 edition. Further, the sticker price on the earlier model was an eye popping $44,670 compared with the $40,550 on the most recent driver.

Importantly, the price cut means the content is unchanged or at least it has changed for the better: Apple CarPlay is now included. So, why the drop in price? Doubtlessly there are two things at play here: the competition is selling their cars for less and consumers continue to gravitate to crossover utility vehicles. That being said, the Envision crossover joins the line this spring, a model that is certain to siphon sales from Buick’s family of sedans.

2016 Buick Regal

Buick Regal v. Acura ILX

The GS’ arrival followed my week with an Acura ILX. Hands down, the Buick is the better model. But that’s not an entirely fair comparison as the ILX is offered in front-wheel drive only and there is no turbo option. The ILX is slightly smaller too, as it is based on the Honda Civic’s platform. Still, the Regal offers a more elegant presence, a quieter cabin and better quality materials. You should also keep in mind that the comparison was between the top-end Regal and a more run-of-the-mill ILX.

Dressed in Buick garb, the Regal GS is a handsome little sedan. It offers room for five, but the back seat is tight. Nevertheless, the sedan should appeal to a young executive, perhaps one with a spouse and small children. Otherwise, the growing family may find the Enclave SUV more to their liking.

2016 Buick Regal

A Look Inside

The Regal GS comes with a thickly padded, leather-wrapped steering wheel. Behind that wheel is a three-analog display featuring a tachometer, speedometer and fuel/oil displays. At the top of the center stack is a set of six switches — it is easy to overlook them, but don’t. Besides the lane departure warning switch, you’ll find the GS’s interactive drive control system.

Pay special attention to the two switches on the outside of the row as they contain “GS” and “Sport” drive modes. Both modes adapt ride and handling, especially at high speeds; the GS mode provides the highest level of handling enjoyment.

Credit Buick with developing a model that is very comfortable for the driver. Leather-appointed seating, heated front seats, and a 12-way driver’s seat is at the ready. The only feature lacking is a seat extender, usually included in such driver’s cars as the BMW 3 Series.

2016 Buick Regal

Behind the Wheel

Press the ignition switch, engage the transmission and you’re ready to discover everything this sedan offers. Soon, the turbo spools and begins to deliver the full measure of its 295 foot-pounds of torque, enabling the GS to zip down the road with authority.

The all-wheel drive system includes a four-wheel independent suspension with wheel-slip management and an electronic limited-slip rear differential enhancing handling. A HiPer Strut front suspension is also at work, limiting torque steer. You’ll feel confident on twisty roads, but you’ll also sense the difference between the Buick and the high-end European sedans. Whereas a 3 Series always feels poised and planted, the Regal GS subtly reminds you that without all-wheel drive at work, it would be just another pricey sedan.

The current generation Regal is now in its sixth year. A 2014 refresh brought light changes to the exterior, update the equipment catalog and brought in additional safety features. A redesigned dashboard also was introduced. The next-generation model is probably a year or two away; keep an eye on the major auto shows for its introduction.

2016 Buick Regal

Buick Regal Considerations

The Regal GS is the sportiest Buick model of the millennium, although it doesn’t go far enough for people who would like to see the brand flash its high-end performance side for the first time in nearly 30 years. That may be left up to a new model based on the Avista concept, a rear-wheel drive coupe introduced at the 2016 Detroit auto show (NAIAS), one with Grand National or Riviera aspirations.

Sport Ute: 2016 Mazda CX-3

January 18, 2016 by admin 28 Comments

Mazda does it again, serving up a new model with its fun-to-drive characteristics in place. The CX-3 is the smallest of its three SUVs, a crossover that might be mistaken for a hatchback.

2016 Mazda CX-3

The Mazda CX-3 makes for yet another entry in the small crossover SUV segment. This emerging class, blazed by the Nissan JUKE five years earlier, now includes models from Honda, Jeep, Chevrolet, Fiat, as well as Mazda. America’s love affair with all things elevated seating continues to grow unabated and shows no signs of easing. Thank you sub-two dollar per gallon fuel!

The Look of a Hatchback

While the other SUVs in this segment sport more of an SUV appearance, the argument can be made that this Mazda CX-3 is a tall hatchback. Such is the layout of this handsome little model with its curving belt line suggesting something other than an SUV.

Otherwise, the Mazda CX-3 offers an entirely familiar countenance, with the brand’s now familiar gaping upper grille and sporty lower grille marking its front fascia. This model’s presentation is further amplified with its sleek headlamps and slash embrasures housing available fog lamps.

Besides its curvilinear belt line, this SUV features hood indentations running from the grille to the windshield line. The side view reveals unusual dipping character lines and pronounced rocker panel molding. Additional molding surrounds the wheel wells.

From the rear, an oversized liftgate spoiler is present, offering a fitting accent to the clamshell door. The blacked out rear pillars give this model a unique “floating roof” look. Sleek, wraparound rear combination lamps with LED accents are present as are reflector lights and dual exhaust ports.

2016 Mazda CX-3

A Cleanly Arranged Cabin

Inside, the cabin is surprisingly uncluttered. A tilt and telescopic steering column is present with secondary driver controls on the face of the wheel. The instrument panel is punctuated by a large speedometer in its own housing and is presented right in the middle of the layout. To the left is the tachometer, to the right is a digital display with the requisite driver information controlled by switches located on the steering column.

Part of the CX-3’s clean look is achieved by placing the color display on top of the dashboard, just above the center console. Canted to the driver, the display features the expected telematics system with audio, navigation and phone connectivity possible. Its part of a “head up” cockpit design Mazda crafted in a bid to ensure that the information is easily accessible while mitigating distraction.

As for the rest of the center stack, it is composed chiefly of oversized switches for the climate control system and also features the expected connectivity points — USB and auxiliary audio. At the base of the stack is the transmission shifter and a switch to activate sport mode. If you’re looking for audio controls, they’re placed between the seats just ahead of the two cup holders. Those cup holders sit beneath a folding armrest.

Small as it is, the Mazda CX-3 offers average storage, including in-door storage pockets with bottle holders. The cargo area is small, measuring 12.4 cubic feet, expandable to 44.5 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. This model has supportive bucket seats up front and a 60-40 split folding, fold-flat rear seat.

2016 Mazda CX-3

Three Trim Levels

Mazda offers the five-seat CX-3 in standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive configurations. Three trim levels are available — Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. The base price comes in at $19,960 for the Sport front-wheel drive model. Fully equipped, a Grand Touring AWD model should come in below $28,000.

As tested, Mazda delivered a Touring AWD model, priced from $23,210 and $26,150 delivered. Mazda Mobile Start ($550) and a Premium Package ($1,410) pushed up the final price. That package includes such amenities as a power sliding moonroof with an interior sunshade and a 7-speaker Bose audio system.

Standard equipment for the CX-3 includes halogen headlights, alloy wheels, power accessories, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rear view camera. The Touring edition brings in keyless entry, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, a front armrest, imitation leather seats (cloth is standard), and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. You also get a blind spot monitoring system with rear cross traffic alert.

The top-end Grand Touring edition brings in larger wheels, steering wheel paddle shifters, automatic climate control, navigation, a Bose audio system, LED headlights along with LED daytime running lights, LED rear combination lights, and LED tail lights. You also get a tonneau cover and leather-trimmed seats with this model.

The smallest of all SUVs may be a bit too small for your family. Yes, you can fit five, but the rear seat is more comfortable for two. Even then, you may desire a bit more legroom — that’s where the larger Mazda CX-5 or CX-9 come in.

What the CX-3 does deliver is a worthy entry-point for people who want the best combination of affordability and utility. A first time car buyer may desire this model for that reason, folding down the rear seat to gain much-needed cargo space. Unlike the similar-sized Mazda3, this model offers all-wheel drive, an attractive feature that enhances handling.

2016 Mazda CX-3

One Powertrain Combination

All CX-3 models are powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. This high compression ratio engine makes an even 146 horsepower and 146 foot-pounds of torque, adequate power for most drivers. All models come with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The CX-3’s engine is peppy, although not super powerful. Mazda geared this model toward attaining higher fuel economy, borne out with its 35 mpg rating for the front-wheel drive model. That’s quite an attainment. Although fuel prices are currently the lowest we’ve seen this century, its an advantage that will be most welcome when fuel prices rise once again.

On the Road

Small cars tend to wear me out eventually as my near 6-foot frame tires of the limited room. Happily, the driver’s seat is sufficiently supportive and bolstered, so no issue there. I could imagine this model serving as someone’s commuter car, providing them with the higher driving profile and superior fuel economy during the week, and serving as their utility vehicle for the weekend. And it does all this without breaking the bank.

So, besides its sinuous styling, how does the CX-3 drive? Well, its handling is composed, especially noticeable when tackling twisty roads. Flick the sport mode switch and you’ll also notice a change in shift points with the transmission moving up and down each gear in rhythm. A certain amount of feistiness jumps out — shades of the Mazda3.

2016 Mazda CX-3

A Subcompact SUV Among Many

So far, I’ve driven the Nissan JUKE, Fiat 500X, and the Honda HR-V in this segment, along with the Mazda. The JUKE is a hoot, especially the front-wheel drive model paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. A June 2013 drive up and down the serpentine hills of Appalachia demonstrated to me what that model was all about.

I found the 500X the best Fiat model to date and the HR-V offering the coolest seating system in a vehicle for its size. All four models have much to offer, although the JUKE is the oldest of them all and needs to be updated — we’re expecting a new one in 2017.

In all, the new Mazda shines in its segment and does so by upholding the brand’s fun-to-drive characteristics. Negotiate carefully and you should come away with a well-equipped all-wheel drive model for about $25,000, a very fair price point in this emerging segment.
