White Space Wonder: 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport

June 29, 2017 by admin 9 Comments

Straddling the space between subcompact and compact SUV.

2017 Nissan Rogue Sport
At first glance, the Nissan Rogue Sport looks a lot like its namesake.

The Nissan Rogue Sport is an all-new model or at least it is new to North America. Not to confuse it with the Nissan Rogue, the Rogue Sport is smaller than the compact Rogue, yet larger than the tiny Juke. Thus, it fills the imaginary “white space” between the two models, supplying an attractive entry for Nissan in the small SUV sector.

While new to North America, the Rogue Sport has long been available as the Qashqai in Europe. Pronounced “cash-ky,” Nissan probably worried certain wrong pronouncements would follow, thus the fresh nomenclature. Then again, the Volkswagen Tiguan (Tig-wahn) has caught on, even if it certain pronouncing errors persist.

By calling the new model the Rogue Sport, Nissan also harnesses a best-selling product’s name. Moreover, the two models share the same underpinnings, although the Rogue Sport measures about a foot shorter. This means interior space in the Rogue Sport is smaller, affecting rear seat space, yet still larger than the Juke and its almost impossible second-row seat.

2017 Nissan Rogue Sport

The 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport comes in three grades: S ($21,420), SV ($23,030), and SL ($26,070). Add $960 for the destination fee. Choose all-wheel drive and your base price increases by $1,350.

Package options include a $570 appearance package on the S grade, adding 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels set within all-season tires. The SV grade offers two packages — all-weather ($920) and premium ($1,500).

The all-weather package adds fog lights, heated outside mirrors, remote engine start, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats and a leather-wrapped shift knob. The premium package adds voice recognition navigation with NissanConnect services, Sirius traffic and travel link, a seven-inch color touchscreen, an around view monitor, moving object detection and blind spot warning.

Choose the SL grade and you’ll have access to a pair of packages as well. A premium package ($2,280) brings in LED headlights, high beam assist, a power-sliding moonroof, blind spot warning, forward collision braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. The platinum package ($570) raises the safety quotient by one notch, adding intelligent cruise control, forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane departure prevention.

Exterior Overview

At first glance, you’ll be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the Rogue Sport and the Rogue. Positioned parallel and those differences begin to sharpen — at least from a footprint perspective.

The 2017 Rogue Sport features a strong front fascia accented by Nissan’s trademark V-Motion grille hemmed in by headlamps with LED accent lighting. The lower grille opening is larger than the top and is offset by available fog lights.

This SUV’s profile has an even beltline that suddenly begins rising just forward of the rear door handles. Numerous character lines, body sculpting and available rocker panel trim convey polish. At the rear, you’ll find the familiar wing-shaped taillights, a custom-designed spoiler, and a single exhaust port tip.

Standard 16-inch steel wheels give way to 17- or 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels elsewhere. Optional equipment includes automatic headlights, power outside heated mirrors with LED turn signal indicators, roof rails, and fog lights.

Interior Highlights

The 2017 Rogue Sport offers room for five with a 60:40 split fold-down bench seat behind the front bucket seats. Cloth seats come standard, but leather covers the SL’s seats, which also have heating and cooling functions. A manually operated driver’s seat gives way to six-way power-adjustable seats in the other trims, including lumbar support.

The front seats are comfortable, offering sufficient support to the back, thighs and legs. Pity any tall person who sits in the back, unless the front driver and passenger are small and accommodating — legroom is tight as is the hip room. If you’re shopping the Rogue Sport for your family, a pair of pre-teen youngsters should find the space fine. But, three across seating is a bit much. That said, most families with four people should shop the Rogue instead.

Credit Nissan with delivering a simple, but useful center console. At the top of the console are the climate system vents, followed by the color screen with switches and knobs on both sides. Beneath that is the climate control system with a smartphone-sized open pocket at the base along with the connection points. The transmission stick splits the front seats.

As for the instrument panel you’ll find a pair of analog displays with a digital driver readout in the middle. The displays are easy to read in all lighting conditions.

All models have keyless entry, power windows and door locks, a manual tilt steering wheel, cruise control, air conditioning, two map lights, four cup holders, four drink holders, and a front seat center console. The storage compartment has a removable cargo cover, and four floor-mounted and two side-mounted tie down hooks. Available features include remote engine start and dual-zone climate control.

Safety and Technology

On the safety front, the 2017 Rogue Sport comes with a suite of airbags, stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. Safety ratings are pending from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Available driver assist features include rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and forward emergency braking. Most come with the top grade, found in the platinum and premium packages.

2017 Nissan Rogue SportAll models have a USB outlet, an auxiliary audio port, satellite radio, and Bluetooth smartphone connectivity. The base model offers a four-speaker audio system with a five-inch display, the SV comes with a six-speaker system, while the SL has a seven-inch touchscreen display and satellite radio. The two top trims have Siri Eyes Free.

On the Road

Every 2017 Rogue Sport comes outfitted with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 141 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission, this SUV makes 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway (front-wheel drive) or 24/30 mpg city/highway all-wheel drive.

This same powertrain moves other Nissan models, including the NV200 van and the Rogue Hybrid.

The 2017 Rogue Sport gets the job done and that’s a sufficient bar for most shoppers. My family of four, including myself, made a 160-mile round-trip excursion with this SUV one Sunday and rarely did I want for more power. Hard acceleration, however, shows its weakness as passing power comes slowly, but steadily.

The Rogue Sport manages bumps just fine or at least it is in the same company as other small models. Steering is light to the touch, while the Sport’s small footprint comes in handy in the all-important turning tight turning radius category.

2017 Nissan Rogue Sport

Parting Thoughts

The Rogue Sport is an attractive and relatively low-cost option to today’s small SUVs. If you’re a fan of Nissan, you understand its placement between the Juke and Rogue. Priced slightly higher than the smallest SUV, but not by much, the Rogue Sport is big on value.

Unless you live in snow country, all-wheel drive is not necessary. Begin your search with the SV and add the all-weather and premium packages, and your total is $26,400. Through incentives and careful negotiation, you should find one for about $25,000, an attractive price point for this vehicle.

Highlights of the 2018 Toyota Camry

June 28, 2017 by admin 15 Comments

The eighth-generation Toyota Camry is the largest, most powerful and efficient one yet.

2018 Toyota Camry SE

as journalists review this next-generation sedan.

The 2018 Toyota Camry will soon debut, an all-new model that launches this midsize sedan’s eighth generation. The new Camry is a clean sheet redesign and is the latest model built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). Long the best-selling car in America, the 2018 Camry is larger, offers more powerful engines, and is the most fuel-efficient one to date.

You have to go all the way back to the 1983 model year to find the first Camry, a compact vehicle available in sedan and hatchback body styles. In 1989, the first US-built model rolled out and as the years passed, the Camry grew in size, taking on midsize proportions. The ensuing years revealed coupe, convertible and wagon versions.

In recent years the Camry dispensed with the other body styles and now is only available as a sedan. A hybrid variant rolled out in 2007; we examined the 2018 Camry Hybrid separately here.

A Tale of Front Fascias

Not only has the front fascia for the all-new Camry received an overhaul, but take note of the design differences between select grades.

In recent years, manufacturers have tweaked the grilles on some models by grade — Toyota’s full-size Tundra pickup truck is one example of this practice.

2018 Toyota Camry SE
2018 Toyota Camry SE.
2018 Toyota Camry XLE
2018 Toyota Camry XLE.

Equipment levels vary by trim. The Camry L has a black front grille, 16-inch steel wheels and a single exhaust. The LE upgrades to 17-inch alloy wheels.

The SE retains the black grille, but adds a sport mesh insert. Other changes include color-keyed sport side rocker panels, a rear spoiler, a single exhaust with dual chrome tips, and 18-inch machined-finish alloy wheels.

The Camry XSE has a gloss black grille with the sport mesh insert, upgraded LED light treatments, 19-inch machine-finished alloy wheels and a dual exhaust with quad chrome tips, a Camry first. V6-powered models also have a panoramic glass roof with a power tilt and slide moonroof.

The XLE grade offers 18-inch wheels and a bright metallic front grille.

The Longest Camry Yet

The 2018 Camry sits on a 111.2-inch wheelbase, up from the previous 109.3 inches. Its overall length is now 192.7 inches.

The larger footprint translates into more room for passengers. Trunk space measures 15.1 cubic feet (14.1 cubic feet in the Camry L).

Generous Room for Five

The roomy cabin is loaded with standard features. Beyond the expected tilt and telescopic steering column, full power accessories, and air conditioning, you’ll find a generous amount of soft touch materials and, yes, real wood trim. Keyless entry, an overhead console with a sunglass storage compartment, dual sun visors with sliding extensions, four cup holders and four drink holders are among the included features.

The Camry L has a fixed rear bench seat. All other models are outfitted with a 60:40 split fold-down rear seat. Additional equipment includes dual-zone climate control, power front seats with driver lumbar support, heated front seats, metal trim and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Top Tech Features

All models come equipped with dynamic radar cruise control. Further, all models except for the base trim have blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert.

The Entune 3.0 audio system comes standard and offers a seven-inch screen on most models and an eight-inch screen on the two top grades. A six-speaker audio system or a nine-speaker system can be had. Standard features include Navigation Scout GPS Link App (three-year subscription), Siri Eyes Free, Google voice controls, an Entune app suite and Bluetooth wireless technology.

Available equipment includes a CD player, HD Radio, WiFi connectivity, and satellite radio. One USB outlet and one auxiliary audio port is included; two additional USB ports are available.

A temporary spare certainly beats a tire inflation kit.

Engines and Transmission

The Camry’s engine displacements are familiar. A 2.5-liter inline-four is standard; a 3.5-liter V6 is available. Both engines come paired with an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission.

The two engines are new or updated for 2018. The base engine makes 206 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. The V6 makes 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque.

Despite the power increase, the 2018 Camry is more efficient than ever. The four-cylinder makes an EPA-estimated 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway (29/41 for the Camry L). The V6 comes in at 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Both numbers put the Camry at the top of its class.

2018 Toyota Camry V6
Camry shoppers once again have a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines. Both are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

2018 Toyota Camry Prices

Pricing for the 2018 Camry is as follows: Camry L ($23,495), plus an $885 delivery fee. Additional grades and prices are as follows: LE ($24,000), SE ($25,200), XLE ($28,450), XSE ($29,000), XLE V6 ($34,400), and XSE V6 ($34,950).

As for the 2018 Camry Hybrid, three grades are offered: HV LE ($27,800), HV SE ($29,500), and HV XLE ($32,250). The new Camry arrives in US showrooms in late July.

One for the Track

Not every Camry on display was roadworthy. Indeed, the NASCAR-ready Camry XSE driven by Kyle Busch was offered for display purposes only. Sadly, we weren’t given the option to do track time.

In any case, the race car was on view in front of the Allison Inn & Spa, where guests posed and took pictures.

About the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

June 26, 2017 by admin 1 Comment

Stelvio expands Alfa’s North American product line to three.

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio
A familiar front fascia graces this 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

The 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio will soon arrive in dealer showrooms, the third US model for this premium Italian brand. The Stelvio joins the 4C sports car and the compact Giulia sedan, expanding Alfa’s reach into unchartered territory.

Indeed, that dominion is long dominated by the premium German makes — Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. This means that every shopper is a potential conquest buyer as Alfa brings forth its first-ever SUV.

Italy’s Stelvio Pass

Named for the famous Stelvio Pass in northern Italy, the 2018 Stelvio shares its underpinnings with the rear-wheel drive Giulia. Unlike the sedan, the Stelvio has standard all-wheel drive. Like the sedan, it will also offer a high-performance Quadrifoglio version arriving later.

The Stelvio’s chief competitors include the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Jaguar F-PACE, and the Porsche Macan. Certainly, stiff competition.

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Fortunately, Alfa Romeo has priced the 2018 Stelvio competitively, from $43,985, including destination. Even when playing with the Stelvio’s price configurator, I managed to keep the final cost below $50,000, or within the realm of competing models.

Specifically, my add-ons included special metallic paint ($600), 18-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels ($500), an 8.8-inch touchscreen display with Bluetooth and navigation ($1,550), satellite radio ($350), and a pair of driver assist packages totaling $2,300.

However, don’t expect such price restraint when the high-end, fully-optioned Quadrifoglio debuts. The upcoming 505-horsepower SUV may top $70,000 when all is said and done.

Model Highlights: Standard Equipment

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio
A beautifully crafted steering wheel underscores this model’s handsome looks.
All 2018 Stelvio models come with a 2.0-liter twin-turbo four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A sport-tuned suspension provides swagger and, hopefully, without much sway. In any case, a 5.4-second 0-60 mph time is in the offing.

Standard equipment includes 18-inch aluminum wheels, bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and LED taillights, and leather seats.

Packages and upgrades bring in 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, black roof rails, sport steering wheel, and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

A heated steering wheel, sport leather seats, wood trim, and other amenities expand this model’s offerings.

Top Safety Offerings

On the safety front, the 2018 Stelvio goes well beyond a standard rearview camera by offering a pair of driver assist packages. The Driver Assist Dynamic Plus package ($1,500) brings in automatic high beam headlamp control, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control. An infrared windshield (useful for reflecting light and reducing heat) and lane departure warning round out the package.

Buyers may also choose a Drive Assist Static With Front Sensors package ($800), outfitted with blind spot and cross path detection, front and rear park assist, and automatic dimming side mirrors.

The Bottom Line

All in all, the 2018 Stelvio represent’s Alfa’s strongest North American entry to date. The competition is most certainly stiff and that means Alfa must execute flawlessly. If successful, Alfa may soon find itself in the company of the world’s best luxury brands — and that’s no small feat for a make largely unfamiliar to most Americans.

Tiny SUV: 2017 Fiat 500X

June 23, 2017 by admin 8 Comments

A subcompact SUV that’s big on style.

2017 Fiat 500X
Put on a happy face: 2017 Fiat 500X.

The subcompact SUV market is hot and the 2017 Fiat 500X finds itself in the thick of things. Mechanically similar to the Jeep Renegade, the 500X is outsold 10-to-1 by its FCA cousin, underscoring the relative and enduring anonymity of the Fiat brand.

And that’s a shame as the 500X is probably the best kept secret Fiat wishes wasn’t concealed. Given my auto journalist soapbox, I’ll attempt to reveal its main attributes, while pointing out the obvious: a lot of Americans still don’t understand Fiat.

2017 Fiat 500X

The 2017 Fiat 500X is available in three trims: Pop ($19,995), Trekking ($23,350) and Lounge ($25,150). Add $995 for destination and $1,900 for all-wheel drive on the Trekking and Lounge editions.

This doesn’t mean you can’t get all-wheel drive on the base model, rather you’ll need to upgrade from the base 1.4-liter engine with a six-speed manual transmission to the much more common 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission. In making the transition to AWD on the base model, your price rises by nearly $4,000 to $23,890.

2017 Fiat 500X

A Matter of Style

Fiat’s idiosyncratic style is all over the 2017 500X.

From the front, the brand’s “happy face” is evident with the circular headlamps accented with LED lights and the narrow upper grille offset by “dimpled” fog lights. The large lower grille opening supplies a chin-like look and the chrome trim above the grille features the Fiat logo serving as the nose.

Perhaps the 500X’s front fascia is too mortal for some?

It is along the SUV’s sides where the demeanor transforms from a friendly face to a utility vehicle, most noticeably with its rising beltline, sweeping roofline, as well as its many character lines. From the rear the fascia features oversized vertical tail lamps along with a spoiler, reflector lights, and chrome trim. Wheel choices also add flair with an assortment of 16-, 17- and 18-inch designs available.

Although small in size, the 500X’s wide stance signals a roomy SUV awaits.

2017 Fiat 500X

In-Cabin Italian Style

Just as the 500X’s exterior has its own take on Italian styling, the interior does likewise. You’ll find a circular theme throughout the cabin — on the door handles, across the dashboard, instrument gauges, switches and knobs and even the headrests. The design is modern and in some cases unusual — my test model featured blue plastic cladding across the lower dash, giving this model the “pop” worthy of its name.

2017 Fiat 500XPremium cloth seats are standard; leather-trimmed seats are optional on the top-grade only. Behind the front bucket seats is a 60:40 split fold-down bench seat. Only that seat doesn’t quite fold flush with the floor. The Honda HR-V has a much better seat adjustment arrangement, making it possible to carry a bicycle inside.

I imagine some people may find the interior room a disappointment, but let me say this: subcompact SUVs are ideal for two people. Anyone else you can fit inside is a bonus. Yes, up to three people can fit in the back, but if they’re adults, some shifting of the front seats forward may be necessary to accommodate their legs. A pair of car seats in the back or two older youngsters present should suffice.

Standard equipment includes power windows and door locks, air-conditioning, and a tilt and telescopic steering column. Also available is dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, cruise control, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power driver’s seat.

Technology and Safety

All models come equipped with Fiat Chrysler’s voice-command UConnect telematics system. Base models have a five-inch touch-screen; all other models offer a 6.5-inch touch-screen. A standard four-speaker audio system gives way to six- or eight-speaker systems elsewhere. My test model had an eight-speaker Beats premium audio system.

Satellite radio is standard across the model line as is Bluetooth. Available features include HD Radio, Siri Eyes Free, a navigation system with traffic reports and travel information.

On the safety front, Fiat offers an advanced safety package on all but the base trim. Here, you’ll find: blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic detection, full-speed forward collision warning with active braking, and lane departure warning with lane keep assist. Parking assist and a rearview camera are other options.

As for crash testing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2017 500X a Top Safety Pick score. As for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), we’re awaiting those results.

2017 Fiat 500X

On the Road

Fiat offers a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine standard and a normally aspirated 2.4-liter engine everywhere else. The turbo comes paired with a six-speed manual and is front-wheel drive only — this means most customers will shop beyond the base model.

My test model had the larger of the two engines. I’ve driven several other Fiats (plus the 2016 500X), so I’m entirely familiar with both choices.

2017 Fiat 500XThe larger four works as you would expect, offering satisfactory off-the-mark acceleration and acceptable passing power. Not once did I have a “want” for more power. At the same time, my performance expectations were entirely in line with the vehicle at hand — a small SUV with adequate power.

The Fiat’s steering and handling provide a measure of connectivity that should please most drivers. Steering is light to the touch, enabling tight turns as needed. This model handles well with surprisingly little pitching and yawing despite its raised profile. It doesn’t match the Fiat 124 Spider in that department, but then the Spider is really a Mazda and a sports car at that.

As for braking, it is firm to the touch, bringing this SUV to a quick stop with very little fade of note.

Do you need all-wheel drive? My test model was front-wheel drive and it provided the expected control. If you live in a mountainous area or where wintry weather annually sets up shop, then go with the four-wheel control. Otherwise, front-wheel drive is entirely suitable for this small SUV.

Parting Thoughts

So, what is the misunderstanding or should I say the lack of understanding of the Fiat brand? There are two things going on here:

1), Fiat is a small car brand operating in a market where consumers have largely rejected such cars. In Europe, where small cars are still prized, the brand thrives. In the US, not so much. Fiat will likely always remain a small car brand, leaving the larger models to Dodge, Alfa Romeo, Jeep, and Ram.

2), Fiat remains relatively unknown. When Americans think of car brands, makes such as Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, Honda, Dodge and Nissan quickly come to mind. Even among smaller mainstream brands Subaru, Buick, and Chrysler come to mind first. Fiat toils among bigger players because it isn’t a full line brand nor is it as established. People who remember Fiat from long ago may still retain perceptions of the brand that only impacts their ability to give Fiat serious consideration.

That said, if you are shopping for a small SUV, the 2017 Fiat 500X should be on your list. It offers much value in a segment where prices are rising as well as the discounting that makes purchasing or leasing one an enticing proposition for consumers.

First Impressions of the Second-Generation Volkswagen Tiguan

June 22, 2017 by admin 8 Comments

The 2018 VW Tiguan debuts in late July.

The second-generation VW Tiguan shares design elements with the midsize
Passat sedan and the all-new Atlas SUV.

Volkswagen’s rejuvenation continues apace, with its second all-new SUV this year set to arrive later this summer. The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan launches this compact SUV’s second generation, a model that is larger, updated and offers the latest technologies.

The 2018 Tiguan (pronounced tig-wahn) follows the 2018 VW Atlas to the market, giving Volkswagen a strong 1-2 punch in the continually expanding SUV segment. VW still has the low-volume, five-passenger Touareg SUV, but the company hasn’t said whether it will return for another model year.

Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) Architecture

The Tiguan along with the Golf and Atlas are each based on Volkswagen’s MQB platform. As a modular platform, MQB may be infinitely resized to accommodate a variety of vehicles and powertrains. The upfront costs are steep, but long-term gains come from expanding MQB to multiple models.

At a press event held in Denver, Colorado, and attended by this writer (Volkswagen covered the airfare and hotel accommodations to make this trip possible), company representatives took turns explaining what the Tiguan is about and VW’s outlook.

one of the largest SUVs in the compact range.

Restoring Customer Confidence

Once again, Volkswagen acknowledged that it needed to regain customer confidence, lost when a 2015 diesel scandal revealed widespread cheating. The automaker paid billions of dollars in fines, repurchased affected vehicles, and fixed others. A company spokesperson explained that the automaker could regain customer trust by building good product.

At the base of the center stack (northwest of the water bottle) is the Tiguan’s drive mode select dial — standard on 4Motion AWD models.

Enter the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan.

The first-generation Tiguan was a bit player in the market, easily outsold by nearly every model, including the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Chevrolet Traverse, and others. When introduced in 2009, the market was already shifting to larger compact models. Unfortunately, the original Tiguan was one of the smallest in its class — size matters and customers shopped elsewhere.

The original Tiguan’s shortcomings served as a lesson for the automaker, something taken into account while developing a new model. Indeed, the company looked specifically at the US market and decided to redesign and engineer the next Tiguan with the American consumer in mind.

That decision produced a model that is 10.6 inches longer, with much of that gain apparent between the wheels. Instead of being the smallest SUV in the compact range, the 2018 Tiguan is now one of the largest. And so much so that the front-wheel drive models automatically include a third-row seat with the extra row serving as a $500 option on all-wheel drive models.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen offers the 2018 Tiguan in four grades: S ($25,345), SE ($29,080), SEL ($32,550), and SEL Premium ($36,250). Add $900 for destination and another $1,300 for all-wheel drive.

All 2018 Tiguan models have a single powertrain offering. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque moves each one.

Volkswagen says the updated engine features a modified Miller cycle for greater efficiencies. Fuel economy is now 22/27 mpg city/highway, up from the previous 20/24. Also helping matters is an all-new eight-speed transmission, offering two additional gears than before.

soon to be pushed to the limit.

On the Road

Volkswagen held nothing back when mapping drive routes for us follow. I teamed with Derick Page of Black Book, taking turns behind the wheel as we embarked on a pair of 50-mile drive segments.

In Denver, you’re already starting your drive at a high elevation — the Cherry Creek section of the city measures 5,358 feet, just above the 5,280-foot “mile high” designation. Our initial trip started out on the interstate before connecting with Colorado SR 36 pushing through Boulder.

The real fun began when we made our ascent through Rocky Mountain National Park on two-lane roads with some of the most amazing scenery in the west. As we climbed ever higher, the valley below faded to near nothingness. Yet we remained thousands of feet below several distant summits (including Longs Peak), still snow-capped even as our local conditions neared 90 °F (32.22 °C).

Volkswagen supplied us with sufficient warning that the paved roads would eventually give way to gravel and just like that they did. Our test 4Motion with Active Control (all-wheel drive) features four settings — on-road, snow, off-road and custom off-road. A quick switch to the off-road setting provided improved handling management, especially as we edged perilously close to the side with no guard rails and only thin forest present to slow what could have been a deadly descent.

Under most conditions, the 2018 Tiguan’s engine performed admirably, although on the steepest inclines it labored a bit. We topped out at 8,018 feet with the turbo adjusting just fine to the thinner air. Steering is sufficiently weighty, handling adept, and the firm brakes quickly brought our Tiguan to a firm stop.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan
After pushing through Rocky Mountain National Park, the roads near
Morrison, Colorado, seemed much more manageable.

Parting Thoughts

My first impressions of the 2018 Tiguan were mostly favorable. Then again, we had access only to well-equipped SEL models due to time constraints which meant that we gave the S and SE trims only a cursory inspection.

That said, the new Tiguan offers an exterior look that is more polished and upscale than before and an interior supplying a healthy mix of premium and common materials. On the tech front, the only fault we found was the size of the screen, but it still offered a clear presentation. I’m familiar with VW’s Car-Net connectivity system and I like its usefulness.

As for the third-row seat, consider it sufficient for youngsters, although cramped legroom is in the offing. If you choose the all-wheel drive model, it may not be worth the $500 investment to gain the extra seat. Otherwise moving up to the midsize Atlas supplies the best balance of passenger and utility space for large families.

choose *not* to opt for the third-row seat.

All-New 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid Tops 50 MPG

June 21, 2017 by admin 7 Comments

The 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid by the numbers.

2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid
Victory! The 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid is once again the most efficient midsize sedan.

Toyota has long held a big edge in the hybrid market, easily selling more vehicles than all of its competitors combined. The Prius, of course, is the best-known Toyota hybrid, but there are other hybrid models available based on the Camry, Avalon, RAV4, and Highlander themes.

The Prius is Toyota’s most efficient hybrid, with one variant earning an EPA mileage rating of 58/53/56 — city/highway/combined. No other Toyota model has come close, but that’s about to change. Indeed, the all-new 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid is super efficient, earning significantly improved mileage ratings certainly worth noting.

2018 Toyota Camry HybridTo that end, we’ll take a look at some of the important “numbers” about the 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid:

51/53/52 — The 2018 Camry Hybrid comes in three grades: LE, SE, and XLE. The Hybrid SE is the most efficient of the three, earning an EPA mileage rating of 51 mpg in the city, 53 mpg on the highway and 52 mpg combined. That’s much higher than the 2017 LE’s 42/38/40 rating, with the current gains achieved through a more efficient powertrain and lithium-ion battery pack along with LE-specific changes yielding lighter equipment and narrower tires. After temporarily falling behind the Honda Accord Hybrid and the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, the 2018 Camry Hybrid is now back on top.

2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid44/47/46 — Of course, if you want to equip your Camry Hybrid with more things, then the SE and XLE grades are where to look. Here, you can expect 44 mpg in the city and 47 mpg on the highway for a combined 46 mpg. The new numbers offer a noticeable improvement over the 2017 version and its 40/37/38 rating.

689 — The 2018 Camry Hybrid has a 13-gallon fuel tank (that’s down from 17 gallons previously, supplying a lighter load for improved efficiencies). Take the 53 mpg highway rating of the LE and your maximum driving range is 689 miles (up from 646)! Pluck the 47 mpg highway rating from the other models and your range is still a robust 611 miles (47 x 13). Certainly, these numbers are typically reached under optimum conditions. For example, with one person in the vehicle, cruise control active and set to about 60 mph, warm temperatures on hand and adequately inflated tires.

2018 Toyota Camry HybridBeyond model efficiency, there are certain dimensional and performance numbers to consider:

111.2 and 192.7 — These two numbers represent the Camry Hybrid’s wheelbase and overall length. Astute Toyota followers will note that the all-new Camry/Camry Hybrid is the largest one yet, measuring 1.9 inches longer between the wheels and 1.8 inches longer overall. The cabin size is roughly the same, but trunk space has improved from 13.1 cubic feet to 15.1 cubic feet.

208 — Toyota has proven that hybrids can be both efficient and potent. Net system horsepower for the 2018 Camry Hybrid is now 208, up from 200 last year. The 208 figure comes during hard acceleration, otherwise you have 176 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque from the four-cylinder engine alone. The improved figure is even more significant when compared with what the standard gasoline Camry I4 delivers — 203 to 206 horsepower.

2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid

And for those readers who prize all things miscellany, the following numbers are worth further inspection:

12 — The original gas-powered Camry model arrived on the market for the 1983 model year, replacing the previous Corona sold since 1957. The first Camry Hybrid arrived in 2007, coinciding with the debut of the sixth-generation Camry. Thus, the 2018 Camry Hybrid begins year No. 12 and the start of its third generation (eighth generation for the standard Camry). One further point of note: a Toyota spokesperson confirmed that the Camry Hybrid represents 6 percent of all Camry sales. As for a plug-in hybrid version, don’t expect one in the near future.

2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid15 — Speaking of sales, the Toyota Camry has been the best-selling car in America for 15 consecutive years and for 19 of the past 20 years (in 2001 the Honda Accord was tops). However, sales are down 11.8 percent year-to-date through May 2017 and Toyota’s RAV4 and Corolla are both within striking distance of overtaking the Camry. Given that SUVs count as cars, the RAV4, Nissan Rogue and Honda CR-V are on pace to finish ahead of the Camry this year. But don’t count the Camry out yet — traditionally, all-new models enjoy a sales bounce, therefore when the new Camry arrives in a few weeks sales could very well pick up once again. Also, look for incentives on outgoing 2017 stock to stir the pot further.

2018 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid

Certainly, there’s much more to share about the Camry and Camry Hybrid. As for the Camry, Auto Trends will disseminate information about the 2018 model in an upcoming piece. Lastly, the following information should sate your Camry Hybrid numbers appetite.

Land Rover Discovery Resurrection!

June 20, 2017 by admin 3 Comments

Return of the top-of-the-line Discovery series.

2017 Land Rover Discovery
On or off road, the 2017 Land Rover Discovery shines.

Land Rover divides its universe between top-of-the-line Range Rover models (currently numbering four) and a pair of standard Discovery models. But there is nothing “regular” about the Discovery and Discovery Sport other than a base Discovery Sport SE is the only Land Rover with a starting price coming in under $40,000.

As for the eponymous Discovery, you need a scorecard to keep track of this model introduced in 1994, then briefly renamed the Discovery Series II, then succeeded by LR3 and LR4 models. For 2017, an all-new model is out and we’ve come full circle as it once again bears the Land Rover Discovery moniker.

2017 Land Rover Discovery

The 2017 Discovery costs from $49,990 for the gas model (SE) and $58,950 for the diesel (HSE). Other gas trims to consider include the HSE ($56,950), HSE Luxury ($63,950) and First Edition ($73,950). Besides the base diesel HSE, the HSE Luxury diesel costs ($65,950). Thus, choosing the turbo-diesel adds $2,000 to your corresponding trim. Add $995 for your destination fee.

A 2017 Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury Td6 ($65,950) was a recent and worthy model supplied for my personal evaluation. The final price, however, was $80,150 reflecting several packages and individual option upgrades. These were: a Drive Pro package ($2,350), rear seat entertainment ($2,270), Namib Orange Premium Metallic paint ($1,495), Capability Plus package ($1,295), Vision Assist package ($1,200), head-up display ($950) and park assist ($800). I counted an additional nine options for a total of 16 — $13,205 in add ons plus a $995 destination fee.

2017 Land Rover Discovery

An Elegant, But Powerful Presence

The Land Rover Discovery projects a familiar stance with a sturdy, but elegant silhouette marked by huge D-I-S-C-O-V-E-R-Y lettering across the front edge of the hood. Just as Land Rover does with Range Rover, the overall brand lives in the shadow of the sub-brand. Yet, you’ll still find Land Rover badging in three places — two are on the C-pillars and the third rests upon the liftgate.

One of the most noticeable design features of the 2017 Discovery is the position of the front wheels — situated at the very front of the SUV. The rear wheels sit nearly as far back as they can go with enough overhang to provide generous storage space or an optional third row.

Stylish wraparound LED-accented headlights amplify the Discovery’s powerful expression along with a large lower grille opening pressed in by distinctive embrasures. A broad hood, strong shoulders, a rising beltline, and a stretched roofline are additional standout features. Angled roof pillars suggest movement, yet sturdiness. In particular, I like the thick C-pillars which leads to a long swatch of glass that appears to wrap around to the back.

From the rear, you’ll find an oversized spoiler and an unusual indentation housing the off-centered license plate holder. Oversized wraparound tail lamps and skid plates are other features of distinction. All models come with beautifully styled aluminum wheels set within all-season tires.

2017 Land Rover Discovery

An Interior Fit for Royalty

Land Rover interiors are generally spacious, airy and opulently dressed. The 2017 Discovery succeeds in advancing that look. Most models offer two standard rows of seating with a third row for two individuals available. Personally, I would hesitate to add a third row unless the extra space was absolutely needed. Otherwise, you risk losing valuable cargo space. For shoppers needing the room, a stretched wheelbase Range Rover would be ideal. But then you’re looking at a model with a starting price of about $110,000.

One of the hallmarks of Land Rover is the quality, fit and finish of the materials used. Bold horizontal and vertical lines grace the cabin with light and dark color choices supplying contrast as well as visual appeal.

Throughout the cabin you’ll find premium leather, real wood, and metal finishes — you won’t find cheap plastics anywhere. The front seats are very comfortable, supportive, and not once did I feel weary, even after multiple hours behind the wheel. The rear bench seat offers ideal space for three with sufficient head, shoulder, hip, and legroom. Add a third row and that space is best used by the youngsters in your family.

Standard interior equipment includes keyless entry and push-button start, a manually adjustable steering column, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, full power accessories, front map lights, front footwell lamps, and ambient lighting. Also available you’ll find heated front and rear seats, sport pedal covers, aluminum paddle shifters, side and rear sunshades, power seats and many more options.

2017 Land Rover Discovery

2017 Land Rover Discovery

Top Technology and Safety Features

I’ve become a fan of the Jaguar LandRover InControl Touch Pro telematics system, primarily for its ease of use. Move away from the base model and you’ll find a 10-inch touchscreen display with colorful graphics, navigation with WiFi hotspot, multiple USB ports, and related apps.

2017 Land Rover DiscoveryYou won’t get Apple CarPlay or Android Autos connectivity as JLR prefers to keep proprietary information to themselves. In any case the system understands voice commands, delivering fast results.

Land Rover offers three audio systems, including an in-house developed 10-speaker system. Beyond that, you have a choice of a pair of Meridian packages — a 380-watt, 10-speaker unit or an 825-watt, 14-speaker system with a subwoofer. HSE models get the standard Meridian system; HSE Luxury the upgraded system.

Neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has conducted crash tests on the 2017 Discovery as of publication. Given the cost of these vehicles, each entity may elect not to do so. Regardless, sizable SUVs routinely score very well.

That said, you’ll find a suite of airbags along with rollover sensing. The available Drive Package brings a driver condition monitor, blind spot monitor and reverse traffic detection, and intelligent speed limiter and traffic sign recognition. Opt for the Drive Pro Package and it adds adaptive cruise control with emergency braking as well as lane keep assist and lane departure warning.

On the Road

The Land Rover Discovery delivers the power, regardless of your engine choice. I’ve long enjoyed the supercharged 3.0-liter V6, available in a number of Jaguar and Land Rover products. The 3.0-liter turbo-diesel is another beastly engine, although it doesn’t deliver its full power up front like the gas engine.

Step on the accelerator and the Discovery turbo-diesel moves confidently forward with average power. Press hard on the pedal and this SUV unleashes its full performance potential, moving the near 5,000-pound Discovery with authority. Quite easily, you’ll quickly reach highway speed and go well beyond if you’re not careful. The Discovery stays poised and delivers a quiet and comfortable ride. When idling, you’ll find one of the quietest diesels anywhere — the trained ear will hear the unmistakable “clack clack” but it is a muted sound nonetheless.

2017 Land Rover Discovery

While its on-road composure is excellent, what the Discovery does off road should clinch the deal amongst luxury SUV shoppers. One of the “wonders” of this model is its $1,500 optional adjustable height (air) suspension, what provides an added measure of lift when you want it. Here, you’ll find a control panel inside the cabin making it possible to lift or drop the suspension. You can also lock the suspension in place, which is ideal when going off road — or you can allow it to switch its height seamlessly.

Land Rover provides customers with a choice of four-wheel drive systems based on a single- or two-speed transfer case. Choose the latter and you’ll enjoy improved control while climbing and descending hills, or when towing. An electronic center differential supplies a 50:50 front to rear axle split with a locking feature. For an added measure of control, the available active rear locking differential controls power between the left and right wheels on the rear axle.

Parting Thoughts

The 2017 Land Rover Discovery stands head and shoulders above the competition. Competing models include the Lexus GX 460, Audi Q7, and the Volvo XC90. Of the three, the Lexus offers the strongest off-road capabilities.

If you shop the 2017 Discovery, the two engines are evenly matched. So, starting with a gasoline HSE model is an ideal place to begin. That said, with popular options ordered, you may pay in the neighborhood of $65,000 to $70,000 for one — prices entirely within the range of what well-equipped models in this segment cost.

Hybrid Hatchback: 2017 Kia Niro

June 15, 2017 by admin 3 Comments

On the road with Kia’s newest model.

2017 Kia Niro
A compact 2017 Kia Niro hatchback with crossover looks.

The Kia Niro is a dedicated hybrid model, the first of its kind for this Korean brand. Yes, the Kia Optima Hybrid is the brand’s first hybrid electric vehicle, but it is a variant of a gas model. Not so with the Niro.

What you have here is a compact hatchback with a crossover look, only the Niro’s ground clearance is 6.3 inches, which is not nearly enough separation for a crossover. Moreover, you’re looking at a front-wheel drive model with no off-roading pretense. That doesn’t mean you can’t drive over soft grass or on a gravelly road — you can — but that should be the extent of your adventuring.

Instead, the Kia Niro offers an excellent blend of efficiency and utility — your fuel economy should approach 45 mpg combined city and highway driving. That’s amazing, but not entirely surprising as today’s hybrids will routinely top 40 mpg. This achievement comes as Kia, along with her sister company Hyundai, have developed an all-new platform of electric vehicles. Hyundai’s Ioniq line is broad and composed of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles. Kia will get one additional model — a plug-in hybrid, but not a pure EV. The PHEV Niro arrives by year’s end.

Kia chose a simpler route with a design that reminds me of the Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe, twin models jointly produced until 2010 (2013 for the Toyota). Like the Niro, both vehicles offered room for up to five and wagon-like utility, especially with the rear seat folded. Because the Niro is a hybrid, you should compare this model with a contemporary competitor, namely the slightly larger Toyota Prius v.

2017 Kia Niro

2017 Kia Niro

The 2017 Kia Niro comes in four grades, plus a Touring Launch Edition ($28,000). The base FE ($22,890) is the most efficient, followed by the LX ($23,200), EX ($25,700), and Touring ($29,650). My test model was a Niro Touring with a sticker price of $32,445, including an $895 destination charge.

Design elements common to the Kia brand dominate this hybrid. From the tiger nose grille to the sleek wraparound headlamps and from the distinctive character lines and body sculpting to the oversized taillamps, the look is an entirely familiar one.

2017 Kia NiroBut there are certain elements unique to the Niro or at least offer this model’s own take on the brand’s expression. Oversized wheel wells, a rising beltline, and a sweeping roofline project sportiness. Unique alloy wheel designs, chrome-like touches, and diffuser-like trim round out the major differences. In all, you have a carefully conceived and handsomely executed package for your inspection.

Inside, the cabin is roomy, offering six-way manually operated front seats and a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat covered in cloth. Standard equipment includes a tilt and telescopic steering column; steering wheel-mounted controls; cruise control; dual-zone climate control; a pair of 12-volt outlets; a rearview camera; Bluetooth connectivity; USB and audio ports; a seven-inch color display; and a cargo light. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are standard.

Upgrades are many and include fog lights and daytime running lights; 18-inch alloy wheels; LED taillights; power-folding side mirrors with approach, heating and turn signal indicators; roof rails and cross bars. You’ll also find heated and ventilated front seats; leather-covered seats; a heated steering wheel; a power tilt and slide sunroof; an eight-inch screen, and satellite radio.

All models come equipped with a four-speaker audio system with two tweeters. For the Touring grade, options include an eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and a wireless phone charger.

What Powers the Kia Niro

All models offer a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas engine, generating 104 horsepower and 109 pound-feet of torque and paired with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Situated between the engine and the transmission is the electric motor, also tasked with distributing power to the front wheels.

A lithium-ion polymer battery pack stores electricity and located under the rear seat between the rear wheels. The electric motor also serves as a generator, capturing wasted energy (such as braking) and sends it to the battery pack.

Safety Ratings and Features

Released earlier this year, safety test results for the 2017 Niro are not yet finalized. We always track crash testing conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and expect those results before summer draws to a close.

All models come equipped with a suite of airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag. The Niro also has a rollover sensor, a brake assist system, hill-start assist, and stability and traction control. Move away from the base model and you’ll find such driver-assist equipment as available forward collision warning, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and emergency braking. At the EX level you’ll find standard blind spot detection, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert.

On the Road

Some hybrid models offer more kick than others. Consider the Kia Niro one that doesn’t match them. Then again, those models — including the Kia Optima Hybrid — have larger gas engines at work, delivering far many more horses to get and keep you moving.

Off-the-mark acceleration with the Niro is sluggish, especially in Eco mode. Switch to sport mode and the engine ramps up and the transmission shift points narrow. But that’ll cost you in fuel efficiency.

Like other hybrids, the Niro switches between gas and electric power, but taps both under hard acceleration. Power is sufficient, but when operating under full load — with four or five passengers, plus equipment — you may wish for more.

The Kia Niro is a compact car and matches what other models in this segment offer in terms of ride comfort, steering, and handling. While spirited driving is not its forte — pun intended — the Niro matches the compact Kia Forte in all three areas, delivering no unpleasant surprises along the way.

2017 Kia Niro

Parting Thoughts

How well the Kia Niro sells in a segment where hybrid demand is slim is difficult to gauge. That said, the Niro’s low base price and utility are important considerations. This means you can find a well-equipped model for about $26,000 and enjoy stellar fuel economy and cargo space with it. There are no government incentives in place when buying a standard hybrid, but you’ll find one if choose the upcoming PHEV version instead.

No doubt, Kia’s generous incentives — cash back, low-interest rate financing, and lease options — will sweeten the deal. Compare this model to the starting cost for the Toyota Prius v ($27,565) and you’ll find a value proposition that makes owning a hybrid with generous storage space (perhaps your first one) too irresistible to let pass by.

Hyundai Kona: New B-Segment SUV

June 13, 2017 by admin 6 Comments

Updated February 1, 2018, to include pricing.

Hyundai Kona: Make that four Hyundai SUV models by March 2018.

2018 Hyundai Kona.
2018 Hyundai Kona.

Hyundai’s US sales are down this year and for one significant reason: the automaker lacks a tiny SUV, a model occupying the red-hot subcompact range. This week, the Korean automaker introduced the Kona, its first global B-segment SUV.

An early 2018 arrival awaits the US-spec Hyundai Kona, following its rollout in Korea this month. It’ll be Hyundai’s fourth SUV, joining the compact Tucson along with the midsize Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport models. Although late to market, the Kona should stem Hyundai’s recent sales drop as much of the brand’s 7.5-percent sales decline through May 2017 is due to its current product line skewing towards cars.

2018 Hyundai Kona

Hyundai revealed the all-new Kona in South Korea on Monday. The new model has the same platform supporting its smallest car, the subcompact Accent and features a sharp, yet modern design. It offers a canvas closer to the Toyota C-HR, a slightly larger model that rolled out this Spring.

Target customers are millennials, individuals who may be searching for their first new car. Hyundai must do battle with more established players, including the Nissan Juke, Chevrolet Trax, Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, Fiat 500X and the Mazda CX-3. Like the Kona, each of these models offers standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive, powered by naturally or turbocharged four-cylinder engines.

Among the exterior highlights of the 2018 Kona are its cascading grille, front LED lights, slim brake lights with turn signal indicators and reverse lamps, and floating roof look. The Kona’s profile features pronounced wheel wells, body sculpting, and available rocker panel trim. The roof has a two-tone color scheme for yet more differentiation in a crowded segment.

Superior Interior Room

Inside, you’ll find space for five, although seating is best for four. That said, Hyundai claims best-in-class interior space.

The automaker utilizes an AVN (audio, visual, navigation) monitor for incorporating Hyundai Motor’s advanced infotainment features. The monitor design is such that it appears to float on the dashboard, enhancing this SUV’s open feeling.

Further design elements of note include the mechanical air vents and functional button arrangement, what underscore the high-tech capabilities of the exterior. The AVN and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) controls come encompassed by light, fluid details that advance the Kona’s relaxed habitat. Each model has high-positioned seats, including fold-flat rear seats.

Two Familiar Engine Choices

Hyundai will offer a pair of engine choices for the 2018 Kona, including a 2.0-liter with 147 horsepower and 196 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission sends power to the wheels.

The second choice is a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine generating 175 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. This one comes paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Three driving modes — sport, normal, and eco are at the ready. Hyundai utilizes the two powertrains in other models, including the Sonata sedan.

Hyundai promises different rear suspension systems for the two- and four-wheel drive models with the goal to deliver a comfortable ride and sporty handling. The automaker is also the only one to make its own steel, utilizing 51.8-percent advanced high strength steel for the Kona’s lightweight body frame.

Kona Technology Choices

On the technology front, models will feature five-, seven- or eight-inch displays, HD Radio, a rearview camera, and 4G telematics. Apple CarPlay and Android connectivity, a head-up display (HUD), and audio system choices round out the available tech features.

To sum up, the 2018 Kona is the right new model for Hyundai. As customers continue to flee coupes, hatchbacks, and sedans, the one glaring hole in the automaker’s product line will soon close.

2018 Hyundai Kona Prices

In January 2018, Hyundai announced pricing for the 2018 Kona. Available in SE, SEL, Limited and Ultimate trims, all models come with standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive.

A 2.0-liter inline-four with a six-speed automatic transmission powers the SE ($19,500) and SEL ($21,150); a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission motivates the Limited ($24,700) and Ultimate ($27,400) trims. Add $1,300 for all-wheel drive and $950 for the destination fee. The contrasting color roof, available on the SEL trim only, is a $150 upgrade.

Second Look: 2017 Jaguar XE

June 9, 2017 by admin 7 Comments

2017 Jaguar XE
This XE is one of three Jaguar sedans.

British automaker Jaguar supplied a 2017 XE for my review recently, providing me with a second opportunity to examine this all-new compact luxury sedan up close and personal. As before, I remain intrigued by this entry-level model, the smallest and least costly vehicle offered by Jaguar.

2017 Jaguar XE

The 2017 XE is available in four grades: XE (Base) ($34,900), XE Premium ($37,500), XE Prestige ($41,400), and XE R-Sport ($46,500). Rear-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is available. A 2.0-liter turbo gas engine is standard; a 2.0-liter turbo diesel can also be had as can a supercharged V6. That’s a varying selection of engines for the compact range; each one comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The luxury compact segment is overflowing with choices. Besides the Jaguar XE, you’ll find the Acura TLX, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS, Infiniti Q50, Lincoln MKZ, Lexus IS, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Volvo S60. A Genesis G70 is set to arrive in 2018.

As the new model on the block, the XE has its work cut out or it. That’s especially apparent as customers shift their purchase decisions away from cars to SUVs. For example, to the new Jaguar F-PACE.

2017 Jaguar XE

Jaguar XE Key Attributes

Because I reviewed this model last September (see Luxury Fervor: 2017 Jaguar XE), I’m employing a different strategy here. Specifically, I’ve taken a deep dive into this model’s top attributes, sharing those findings as follows:

1. Performance as you like it.

With three engine choices available, shoppers will find that performance levels vary based on their preferred choice. Horsepower comes in at 180 (diesel), 247 (turbo gas), and 340 (supercharged V6) and that’s quite a spread. But things get very interesting when comparing torque, which is your pulling and passing power. You’ll find 318 (diesel), 269 (turbo gas), and 332 (supercharged V6).

Where the diesel is slow off the mark, once the turbo spools up, the power numbers close within striking distance of the largest engine, easily surpassing the turbo gas engine. This truth underscores just how torquey diesel engines are.

2017 Jaguar XE

2. Stellar fuel economy is within reach.

You enjoy decent fuel economy with the standard gasoline engine, delivering 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Oddly, those same figures also apply to the supercharged V6 — all that upfront power and you still have an efficient engine.

The turbo-diesel, however, is the prize as it delivers 32/42 mpg city/highway for the rear-wheel drive model and 30/40 for all-wheel drive. So, no matter the engine choice, you’ll enjoy efficiencies, especially on the highway.

3. Technology second to none.

You won’t find Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility in any Jaguar product. Instead, connectivity comes by way of this automaker’s proprietary system.

Jaguar’s InControl telematics system is modern, clean and efficient. The standard eight-inch screen gives way to a 10.2-inch screen in upper trims — both deliver a colorful display, limited glare, and minimal backlighting interference.

2017 Jaguar XE

The system supports Bluetooth and audio streaming, and offers USB connectivity. WiFi is optional and a host of supporting apps are available.

When it comes to audio systems, you’ll find a Jaguar sound system with HD Radio and six speakers. An 11-speaker Meridian system is available. Opt for the technology package and you’ll acquire the large screen, WiFi, a CD/DVD player, and a 17-speaker Meridian audio system.

4. Exemplary safety features are present.

Typically, new cars are crash tested by both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The insurance companies back the IIHS; the NHTSA is under the authority of the US Department of Transportation.

Neither entity, however, has tested the Jaguar XE yet. Likely, testing is pending, but absent those results the XE offers maximum protection. To wit, you’ll find “all surface progress control” on every model, technology that operates as low-speed cruise control. Specifically, when traveling at speeds of 2 to 19 mph, the system activates under slippery conditions to control braking and traction.

Other safety features available include adaptive cruise control, closing vehicle sensing, blind spot monitoring, semi-automated parallel and perpendicular parking, and reverse traffic detection. These features are available as you travel further up the trim level grade.

2017 Jaguar XE

5. Luxury meets practicality.

Entry-level luxury models typically offer a paucity of upscale features or just enough to set them apart from mainstream models. After all, if you’re paying about $35,000 as your threshold for entry, you can’t expect much. Right?

Well, the Jaguar XE provides standard features befitting the brand, including alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, and chrome touches. Inside, you’ll find power front seats, full power accessories, dual-zone climate control, and an overhead console. Certainly, soft touch materials are apparent, while you’ll also find a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Trim level upgrades pull out all the stops and bring in such features as ambient lighting, a power adjustable steering wheel, heated front seats, front seat lumbar support, an imitation leather-wrapped instrument panel, and upgraded leather. Some models, such as the R-Sport, add exterior upgrades, including a rear spoiler.

2017 Jaguar XE

On the Road

Jaguar packs a lot of power into a small engine. If you prefer gasoline over diesel, the inline four-cylinder engine should be sufficient. Off-the-mark acceleration is steady. Once the turbo kicks in, you’ll enjoy a full burst of power. But prepare yourself for the expected lag — the Jaguar turbo seems slightly slower in spooling up than some competitors. If you’re a fan of Jaguar’s superchargers, you’ll feel the difference immediately. Superchargers deliver full power up front, fading late — turbos kick in later, then deliver full power.

The eight-speed automatic matches well with the turbo, shifting seamlessly with no gear hunting detected. Paddle shifters are at the ready for customers who prefer an added measure of control. Unfortunately, there is no manual gearbox to be had.

The XE’s strong suit may be how well it behaves on your favorite back roads. Bred for spirited driving, this cat delivers taut steering and responsive handling. Its lightweight frame (3,320 pounds for the test model) frees the body of excess weight that encumbers some models. Further, the standard rear-wheel drive platform should please the typical drive enthusiast. Choose all-wheel drive if you want an extra measure of handling confidence.

Parting Thoughts

Unchanged are my initial impressions of the Jaguar XE — that second look only confirmed what I had experienced earlier. One additional consideration is worth noting: buyers looking for a five-passenger sedan may find the limited rear legroom disappointing. That said, the midsize XF is the better choice here.

The XE brings it to the German makes, giving Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz much concern in a highly competitive (and shrinking) segment. It outdoes its Japanese competitors, while delivering a strong alternative to the Cadillac ATS. In all, if the Jaguar XE is your entry-level luxury sedan of choice, you’ll have the satisfaction of driving a lithe feline.
