Compact Value: 2019 Kia Forte Sedan

October 29, 2018 by admin 6 Comments

Kia rolls out its third-generation Forte.

2019 Kia Forte Sedan
Now in its third generation, the 2019 Kia Forte has its sportiest look yet.

Compact cars and all car models, in general, have seen an unprecedented drop in sales over the past decade. Consumers have voted with their wallets, opting for more utility vehicles and pickup trucks instead.

Some manufacturers, such as Ford and Fiat Chrysler, are cutting back on car models, abandoning some segments altogether. Kia, however, isn’t turning its back on value-oriented consumers, especially first-time new car shoppers who can’t quite afford an SUV, but might yet afford a small car.

Notably, Kia’s product line is far more balanced than some other brands, with six sedans and two hatchbacks to consider. You’ll also find a line of people movers, including utility vehicles and a minivan. Furthermore, Kia is represented by five electrified vehicles — two hybrids, two plug-in hybrids, and one electric vehicle. Moving forward, you’ll see more crossovers join Kia’s model line, but likely at no expense to car models.

2019 Kia Forte Overview

The third-generation Kia Forte rolls out for the 2019 model year. What’s especially noteworthy about it, is that this is only the 10th model year for Kia’s small sedan. Thus, while many competitors update their cars once every six years, Kia does so in either four or five years. That’s a great way to keep a model name fresh. It also ensures that Kia keeps up with or outlasts the competition.

The 2019 Kia Forte is sold in sedan, five-door hatchback (Forte5) and two-door (Forte Koup) configurations. Our review covers the sedan only, but if you need ample utility, then take a closer look at the hatchback. As for the coupe, consider this body style if you insist on sportiness.

Kia offers four Forte sedan trims, beginning with the FE ($17,690). Dealers won’t stock many of those, so take a look at the three other trims: LXS ($19,090), S ($20,190) and the EX ($21,990). Add $895 for the destination charge.

All this represents a very tight price separation between the four trims. It is even tighter for FE customers who upgrade from the manual transmission to the CVT, adding $900 to their price. The CVT is standard elsewhere.

2019 Kia Forte Sedan

The two base trims come as delivered — there are no packages available. Choose the S trim and you’ll find an S Premium Package ($1,200, with LED headlights with automatic leveling, high beam assist, a power sunroof, and LED interior lighting).

Choose the top EX trim and you’ll find an EX Launch Edition Package ($3,210). This package includes all the features of the S Premium Package and adds such amenities as a rear trunk lid spoiler, 17-inch graphite finish alloy wheels, smart cruise control, parking distance warning-reverse, improved telematics, a wireless phone charger, and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

My test EX model came fully equipped, pushing this model’s final price to about $26,000.

Inspired by the Kia Stinger

The 2019 Forte sedan’s design is the sportiest one yet, inspired by the Kia Stinger. The Stinger is Kia’s special performance sedan (actually, it is a hatchback), which sits on a rear-wheel-drive platform with available all-wheel drive. The Stinger competes with the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300, as well as with select European models.

2019 Kia Forte SedanDesign elements from the Stinger have found their way to the Forte. Indeed, the Forte’s silhouette is the antithesis of a boxy design, with its falling hood, a long roofline, high beltline, and tapered rear deck.

The Forte’s front fascia features the latest interpretation of Kia’s tiger-nose grille, delivering a look that is at once sophisticated and handsome. Lighting details, profile creases, and available diffuser-like trim add visual interest. Kia’s designers worked diligently to impart a more refined look to the Forte and it pays off.

Standard exterior features include projector low-beam (and automatic) headlights, 15-inch steel wheels, and power-adjusted side mirrors. Among the many available upgrades are LED lights, front fog lights, alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, puddle lamps, a power sunroof, and a rear spoiler.

Inside, the cabin is roomy, offering space for five passengers. The dashboard is fairly simple, yet it offers its own panache, with layers and lines embellishing the surface. The instrument panel is uncomplicated with two analog dials dominating.

2019 Kia Forte SedanThe center stack is topped by a wide and colorful screen. The ledge at the bottom of the screen is where you may rest your cell phone. In some models, it doubles as a wireless charging port. This is a handy feature and certainly beats storing your cell phone in a cup-holder.

Other standout cabin features include minimal buttons and switches to control everything, large in-door storage areas, and an oversized glove box.

As for seating, the front seats are comfortable and offer decent support. The rear seat holds up to three, although legroom may feel tight for tall passengers. This 60/40 bench seat folds down and provides access to the roomy trunk, measuring a generous 15.3 cubic feet.

Standard interior features include full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The list of optional features include a power driver’s seat with lumbar support, heated and ventilated front seats, imitation leather seats, a sliding armrest, an illuminated glove box, and LED lighting.

Technology & Safety Features

All 2019 Fortes come with an 8-inch touch-screen audio system display. The list of standard features includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, USB and auxiliary audio input, and Bluetooth connectivity. The two bottom trims have a four-speaker audio system, while the two top trims are equipped with six speakers.

2019 Kia Forte SedanAvailable features include satellite radio, HD Radio, navigation, an additional USB charger, and wireless charging. An eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is also available.

Among standard safety features, you’ll find forward collision avoidance, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. Depending on the trim, you’ll find additional safety features, including lane change assist, blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, high-beam assist, parking assistance, and smart cruise control.

Kudos to Kia for bringing sophisticated safety technologies to a mainstream compact model. “Budget” no longer means stripped and your personal safety doesn’t require you to opt for a pricey model.

On the Road: 2019 Kia Forte

All 2019 Fortes come with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission. What’s interesting here is that the CVT is new to the model line and unique to Kia (corporate cousin Hyundai utilizes a six-speed automatic transmission).

2019 Kia Forte SedanThe Kia powertrain delivers 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque and, thus, is geared toward efficiency, not performance. Indeed, in its most efficient form, this model makes a laudable 31 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway.

Kia took special care to develop a transmission that behaves more like an automatic than a CVT. A CVT represents a gearless design, which means the engine usually revs loud under hard acceleration. But Kia’s engineer’s worked with software developers to mimic steps, which mitigates noise and the uncomfortable “it sounds like the engine is going to blow” feeling that goes with it.

The front-wheel-drive Forte is not performance-oriented by any stretch, although it navigates corners with ease and supplies a reasonably comfortable ride. What may disappoint some is that the previously available turbo option is gone — you’ll still find this engine in the top trims of the hatchback and coupe.

Parting Thoughts: 2019 Kia Forte Sedan

Kia gets nearly everything right with the 2019 Forte sedan. But even the lack of a more powerful engine option seems somewhat inconsequential here. After all, Kia delivers a sporty design with a modern and roomy interior and ample trunk space at the ready.

2019 Kia Forte SedanThis automaker also supplies advanced safety technologies and delivers its share of in-cabin amenities and options. These features make the Forte an impressive entrant in a competitive segment.

Among the Forte’s chief competitors are the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and the Nissan Sentra. The Hyundai Elantra, Volkswagen Jetta, Chevrolet Cruze, and Mazda3 also warrant a look. Other models include the Subaru Impreza (with standard all-wheel drive) and the outgoing Ford Focus.

Lastly, keep in mind that Kia offers an outstanding warranty plan, which delivers longer bumper-to-bumper protection, an extended rust warranty, and a noteworthy powertrain plan. Altogether, Kia is big on value and strong on amenities, representing strong attributes consumers should not ignore.

Raise the Stakes: 2019 Genesis G70

October 25, 2018 by admin 6 Comments

With the G70, Genesis now has a trio of luxury sedans to consider.

2019 Genesis G70

Things are getting serious at Genesis Motors. When launching the upscale brand in 2015 with two sedans, the Hyundai Motor Group promised to populate its luxury marque with six models.

This year, Genesis released its third model, the compact G70 sedan, making its strongest case yet as a luxury manufacturer. Indeed, where the midsize G80 and full-size G90 sedans established toeholds in their respective segments, the G70 is going after the heart of the matter, in this case, models such as the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Audi A4, among others.

Yes, Genesis is delivering its sedans first, with two SUVs to follow. A sixth model, perhaps a hybrid sports car, will flesh out Genesis’ product line.

And if you think Genesis Motors will rest on its laurels come 2020, you have another thing coming. The Korean luxury brand aims to take on the world, and will likely do battle with Lexus, Jaguar, Acura, Cadillac, Infiniti, and other luxury brands moving forward.

2019 Genesis G70 Overview

The G70 may be the best example of Genesis’ bona fides, a sedan with a strong presence and the luxury and performance chops to back it up. It is Genesis’ riskiest model yet, as it invades territory long dominated by a few players. BMW and Mercedes-Benz have the strongest entries (and they’re also new for 2019), with competitors such as the Lexus IS, Cadillac ATS and the Jaguar XE offering a modest presence.

2019 Genesis G70Genesis offers the 2019 G70 in five trims, with each one based on a particular engine and drivetrain. The base model comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This rear-wheel-drive model starts at $34,900. Add $995 for the destination fee.

The second model is the all-wheel-drive version of the base model. This one starts at $36,900. Yes, there is a six-speed manual gearbox available with the base rear-wheel-drive model only. Here, your cost is $37,900.

The fourth trim is powered by a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This one retails for $43,750. If you prefer all-wheel drive, then your cost is $45,750.

2019 Genesis G70You’ll also find various package upgrades, including 2.0T Elite Package ($5,000), 2.0T Dynamic Package ($9,000; $8,000 on the all-wheel drive) and 2.0T Sport Package ($10,000; $9,000 on the all-wheel drive). You’ll also find a 3.3T Elite Package ($1,750), 3.3T Dynamic Package ($4,250) and 3.3T Sport Package ($5,750) choices. We’ll mention items from those packages as we discuss various other features moving forward.

Importantly, the 2019 Genesis G70 matches the starting price of the 2019 BMW 3 Series. The G70’s top-end pricing is lower than the BMW and its amenities list goes deeper. What it doesn’t offer to U.S. customers is diesel or hybrid variants. We think the latter will eventually become commonly found in Genesis’ future product plans.

A Matter of Style

You may have heard that the Genesis G70 is related to the Kia Stinger. This is true. The corporate cousins share a common platform, although the G70 is slightly smaller than the Kia. It also takes its own styling direction — the silhouettes of the two models are quite dissimilar.

Up front, the G70 has a strong fascia, amplified by a gaping grille covered in mesh. Sleek wing-like headlamps touch the top of the grille. Large dugouts for the lower intake, stress this model’s aggressive demeanor.

2019 Genesis G70The G70’s profile features a long hood, a high beltline and a sloping roofline leading to a notched rear deck. Important design elements include boomerang accented side vents, which are common to sports cars, sport alloy wheels set within performance tires, red Brembo brakes and just enough body sculpting to keep things interesting.

From the rear, the fascia features an oversized trunk lip spoiler that serves as a bulge transecting the length of the trunk. Wraparound tail lamps, dual chrome exhaust tips, and a diffuser complete the look.

Yes, there are some differences between trims. My description applies to the top-trim model, which was my test vehicle and topped $52,000.

Standard exterior features include automatic headlights, high beam assist, LED lights, heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust tips, and a hands-free automatic opening trunk. Options include full LED headlights, Genesis logo approach lights, 19-inch wheels, summer tires, and a limited-slip differential

2019 Genesis G70Inside, the G70 delivers an elegant, yet straightforward cabin. It isn’t cluttered with knobs and switches or overrun by complex lines or secreted compartments. Much like the BMW 3 Series, the layout features analog readouts, sizable round dials, and a minimalist persona.

The quilted leather seats are the eye candy of choice for the G70. The visual appeal is complemented by passenger comfort, with the front seats offering a proper amount of bolstering and support. The rear seat is comfortable too, but like the BMW, legroom comes at a premium. Unless the driver or front passenger elect to have their seats pulled forward, you’ll soon realize that the rear seat is best left for children.

Standard interior features include a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, imitation leather seats, power front seats with driver power lumbar support, climate control and full power accessories. Optional features include alloy pedals, Nappa leather seating surfaces with sport quilting, heated and ventilated front seats, and aluminum trim.

Technology and Safety

Some luxury manufacturers make obtaining technology expensive. That is if you want such add-ons as Apple CarPlay, expect to pay $300 or more for the service. Most mainstream manufacturers include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for no charge. The same can be said for Genesis.

The standard color display measures seven inches. You’ll also find a rearview camera with parking guidelines, Bluetooth connectivity, a six-speaker audio system with satellite radio and HD Radio, and three USB ports. Optional features include a 15-speaker Lexicon audio system and full navigation.

2019 Genesis G70

Driver-assist safety technologies build on any model’s core safety systems, including brake assist, a suite of airbags, and crash test scores. We don’t yet have test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but we’re confident this Genesis will do fine.

All models come with forward collision avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, blind-spot collision warning with rear cross-traffic collision warning, smart (adaptive) cruise control with stop and go, driver attention warning, and high beam assist. This is a remarkable suite of advanced safety features and they’re included at no extra charge. Much of the competition is gradually adding features to the standard equipment list, but Genesis has the full package included.

On the Road With the 2019 Genesis G70

What flavor is your Genesis G70? My preferred model is the middle trim with the base engine and a manual transmission. I’m of the school where “rowing your own” is the preferred choice. When I’ve driven a BMW 3 Series with a manual gearbox, you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

Alas, Genesis sent the top-trim model my way. But I have no complaints with that decision whatsoever — it just means I’m not able to make comments about rev shifting and clutch uptake. In any case, BMW and Mercedes-Benz no longer offer manuals with their compact sedans, a decision that disappoints some enthusiasts to no end. Paddle shifters, anyone?

2019 Genesis G70If you opt for the base G70 engine, you’ll have 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque at the ready. These are good numbers, although if you want stronger performance to go with adroit maneuvering and a firm ride, an engine upgrade is in order.

That’s exactly what was under the hood of my test model — a twin-turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 engine with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. It delivers an outstanding 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds or two full seconds faster than the standard engine.

One of the first things I noticed about the G70 is its fairly hushed, but still aggressive exhaust note on ignition. The low hum suggests something strong is at play, a fact confirmed by engaging the gas pedal. Copious amounts of power is at the ready and quickly tapped with no hesitation felt.

While power is certainly a G70 attribute, where this model’s strength lies is in its handling. Take the Genesis on a twisty road and it remains poised and stays planted on the sharpest turns. Indeed, the combination of Michelin sport tires and excellent suspension tuning ensure success in all your driving endeavors.

The G70 reminds me of the 3 Series in a very important way — it makes most any driver look skilled when entering and leaving corners or while hanging with the twisties. By the way, rear-wheel-drive models get a limited-slip differential.

Is there any downside to the G70? Yes. And that would be its harsh-at-times ride. There is no escaping the fact that when the Sport drive mode is chosen, the ride loses whatever softness is left, while also supplying a real connection with the road. That connection includes magnifying bumps and other road insults, which means you’ll want to choose smooth pavement wherever it can be found.

2019 Genesis G70

Parting Thoughts: 2019 Genesis G70

Mission Accomplished. Or at least, Mission Compact Luxury Sedan.

Genesis Motors rounds out its sedan line in an important way, delivering a model that should attract entry-level luxury model shoppers. Yes, Genesis absolutely needs to transition to SUVs, but you have to admire the brand for concentrating on its core competencies before launching an SUV.

Aiding the G70’s cause are robust services that go with it, including complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles with corresponding valet service. That service includes picking up and delivering the G70 for scheduled maintenance and supplying a courtesy replacement vehicle. You’ll also find three years of connected car services, satellite radio along with regular multimedia and navigation updates.

7 Facts About the Volkswagen Beetle

October 22, 2018 by admin 3 Comments

You would be hard-pressed to find another vehicle with a model name as well known or as even as old as the Volkswagen Beetle. Years before it showed up on our shores, the Beetle design was established, the work of Ferdinand Porsche. In 2014, Volkswagen marked the 65th anniversary of the Beetle in America, with 5.5 million models sold stateside since it was first imported.

Fact No. 1: Volkswagen Type 1

The “Beetle” wasn’t the first name Volkswagen used for its “people’s car.”

Volkswagen BeetleIt was originally known simply as “Type 1” or as “the Volkswagen,” with Germans affectionately calling it “Kafer” or “Beetle” even before it was sold abroad.

Years earlier, Adolf Hitler ordered its construction to provide low-cost transportation for the average German family.

A small number of models were built for Nazi party officials during the Second World War, with mass production started after the war ended.

Fact No. 2: It Floats

The original Volkswagen Beetle floats. At least it does for a few minutes. That car had a sealed steel bottom with nothing exposed beneath it.

Its body was airtight, leading to Volkswagen creating a television commercial demonstrating that the Beetle, indeed, floated. Volkswagen added a disclaimer at the end of the commercial stating, “The VW will definitely float, but it will not float indefinitely.”

Fact No. 3: A Counter-Culture Favorite

In the 1960s as young people began to embrace a counter-culture lifestyle, the Beetle’s appeal surged. Its simple, even cute design were important factors as was its price: it cost less than $2,000.

It also got good gas mileage, but its earlier models were designed to travel no faster than about 62 to 65 mph.

Fact No. 4: The Original Stayed Around

The last of the first-generation Volkswagen Beetle were built in Germany in 1977, with production then shifted to Brazil and Mexico. The Brazilian factory continued to produce Beetles until 1986, but the Mexican factory produced them until 2003.

However, the Latin American models were never exported to the US, which was then served by the replacement Rabbit, known as the Volkswagen Golf elsewhere.

Fact No. 5: Volkswagen New Beetle

Volkswagen revived the Beetle name in 1998, calling the model the “New Beetle” to distinguish it from the original.

It represented the second of three distinctive “Beetle” models ever built, but its relationship to the original was in name only.

The Volkswagen New Beetle drew its styling cues from the earlier design right down to the flower holder that sat on its dash. Although its rounded shape, front and rear fascia and overall demeanor paralleled the original model, the New Beetle sat on the same front-wheel-drive platform underpinning the VW Golf.

The New Beetle was built from 1997 to 2011.

Fact No. 6: New Is Old Again

If you replace the New Beetle with something new, should it be called the New New Beetle? Wisely, Volkswagen simply reverted to using “Beetle” for the most recent of the three distinctive models to bear the iconic model’s name.

Introduced to the US market for 2012, the current iteration shares its platform with the Volkswagen Jetta and is larger than both earlier Beetle models. Like the New Beetle, the current Beetle is front-engine and front-wheel drive, with more modern engine and transmission choices as well as the latest in-cabin technologies. It is also the first US-spec Beetle to offer a diesel engine.

Fact No. 7: Sales Leader

The current iteration of the Volkswagen Beetle falls under the two-door specialty coupe and convertible category.

Volkswagen I.D. Buzz Concept
Electric vehicles, such as this microbus, is the future of VW.

In 2013, Beetle sales topped 43,000 units in America alone, becoming one of the most popular models in Volkswagen’s 11-model-line family.

Sales, however, began to fall in ensuing years, and are now less than half what they were at their current-generation peak. That said, Volkswagen will discontinue Beetle production in 2019, some 80 years after the original model rolled out.

Volkswagen Transformation: From Beetle to Electric Vehicles

The VW Beetle will soon be history, but its place in global autodom will continue to live on. Today’s models are nothing like the original, except for its iconic good looks. Regardless, Volkswagen’s original model leaves as the brand makes its way in the 21st century, with even diesels now a thing of the past and electric vehicles soon to dominate.

Fuel Types and Your Car

October 19, 2018 by admin 2 Comments

Have you been to a service station lately? Unless you are part of the small cohort of electric vehicle devotees, then you are making regular visits to the fuel pump and shelling out a lot of cash in the process.

While visiting the pump, you will find several grades of gasoline and in some cases diesel and biofuel options. Choosing the right fuel for your car can help it run its best while enabling you to avoid costly repairs as you keep your vehicle in sound operating condition.

Your Owner’s Manual

If you are not sure what type of fuel your car takes, there are two places where that information is prominently posted within your vehicle.

fuel fillerThe first is printed on its fuel cap. The second is in your owner’s manual. Carefully read what is published and understand the distinction between “recommended” and “required” fuels.

Recommended fuels represent the grade of gasoline that your car is optimized to consume. Required fuels are those that you must use or risk damaging your engine and perhaps invalidating your new car warranty.

Many high-performance engines equipped with turbochargers and superchargers require premium-grade gasoline only. Understand the distinction between “recommended” and “required” to avoid making a costly mistake. Engine damage can cost you thousands of dollars in repairs.

(See Also — How Can I Tell if My Car is Flex-Fuel Capable?)

Gasoline Grades

Most fuel pumps offer two grades of gasoline, with others offering three or more.

Regular grade gasoline typically comes in at 87 octane, with octane representing a flammable hydrocarbon liquid. An octane rating measures a particular fuel’s propensity to ping or knock when mixed with air and burned within an engine’s cylinders.

To avoid knocking, especially in higher compression ratio engines, manufacturers may recommend or require that you use mid-grade gasoline (89 or 90 octane) or premium grade gasoline (usually 92 or 93 octane). There is, however, usually no performance advantage for fueling with a higher grade gasoline than for regular if your car is optimized to take lower octane rated fuel.

All About Diesel

Just as the octane rating measures gasoline’s quality of ignition, cetane measures diesel fuel.

However, the similarities end there as cetane measures ignition delay, the time between the start of fuel injection and the start of ignition. A higher cetane number means your diesel-powered vehicle will start faster, operate quieter, run more efficiently and emit lower levels of pollutants.

Unlike gasoline, motorists will typically find just one diesel choice at service stations. Cetane ratings typically range from 40 to 45 and in some cases as high as 55.

Biofuels and Alternative Fuel Choices

Many service stations around the country carry biofuels. In fact, if you fill your car with gasoline, there is a significant likelihood that your fuel contains up to 10 percent ethyl alcohol.

E85 fuelThis should be of little concern for you as today’s gasoline-powered vehicles can run safely on a small blend of gasoline and ethanol, the latter typically derived from corn and other plant-based materials.

Some cars are known as flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), which means they can take either straight gasoline or a combination of gasoline and ethyl alcohol up to 85 percent. So-called E85 fuel or ethanol consists of 85 percent ethyl alcohol and 15 percent gasoline.

(See Also — Rebates For Buying, Using An E85 Vehicle)

Similarly, many of today’s diesel engines can take biodiesel, representing a combination of animal fats, cooking oil or soybean oil and straight diesel, ranging from 5 to 20 percent. Thus, B20 fuel represents 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel.

A select number of vehicles can run on propane fuel or compressed natural gas (CNG), typically following aftermarket retrofits that make this possible. The advantage of both fuels is that they are cheaper and run cleaner than gasoline or diesel, but few service stations carry them. In areas where allowed, homeowners may install liquid petroleum (propane) tanks on their property. Homes equipped with a natural gas line can also install a compressor appliance to refuel their vehicles overnight.

Shopping for a Vehicle

Not all models offer one fuel type only. Some are able to take gasoline, other diesel, while still others run on natural gas or liquid petroleum.

When shopping for a new vehicle, consider the current costs for these fuels and plan your purchase accordingly.

SUV Zenith: 2019 Subaru Ascent

October 18, 2018 by admin 11 Comments

Subaru’s Ascent is this brand’s largest SUV.

2019 Subaru Ascent
The 2019 Ascent is the largest of four Subaru utility vehicles.

The 2019 Subaru Ascent fills a hole in this automaker’s product line, by supplying a sizable three-row crossover SUV. It represents Subaru’s largest model yet, a vehicle designed to keep growing families in the brand fold.

Although the Ascent is not Subaru’s first three-row model — that honor belongs to the Tribeca, last built in 2014 — it is the first one to take advantage of the brand’s new modular architecture. Thus, the Ascent has an additional five inches between the wheels, is two inches wider and comes in about four inches taller than the Tribeca.

These specifications mean the 2019 Ascent is better able to accommodate seven passengers in comfort than the Tribeca. Further, with three rows of bench seats, the Ascent offers room for eight as do the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Buick Enclave and the Toyota Highlander.

But one of the most significant differences between the 2019 Ascent and its competitors is that the Subaru is the only one with standard all-wheel drive. Each of its competitors has standard front-wheel drive with available all-wheel drive.

2019 Subaru Ascent Trims

Subaru offers the 2019 Ascent in four trims: Base ($32,970), Premium ($35,170), Limited ($39,970) and Touring ($45,670). All prices include the $975 destination charge.

The Base and Touring models do not offer package upgrades. The Premium model offers four package choices, including a pair of Convenience ($1,460) and Sporty Packages ($4,260) based on the number of seats chosen (seven or eight).

The Convenience Package includes a power rear liftgate, keyless entry, an automatic dimming rearview mirror, and reverse automatic braking. The Sporty Package builds on the Convenience Package, adding 20-inch wheels, a panoramic moonroof, an 8-inch navigation system, and a cargo area cover.

As for the Limited model, it offers a pair of Technology Packages ($2,950), once again based on 7- or 8-passenger seating. This package includes a panoramic moonroof, navigation, a cargo area cover, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

The Ascent’s center console is clean and uncluttered.

A Matter of Style

We’ve already made the point that the 2019 Ascent is the largest Subaru model ever. Beyond that, the Ascent shares some of the styling elements of other Subaru models, although its diamond-shaped grille is larger and the headlamps and lower intake are also unique to this model.

2019 Subaru AscentThe Ascent’s broad hood, firm shoulders and distinct wheel well arches impart strength. A high beltline dominates the profile. Our test model included roof rack side rails and crossbars. From the rear, you’ll find large wraparound tail lamps, a liftgate spoiler, chrome trim, and dual exhaust ports.

Standard exterior features include halogen headlights, folding side mirrors, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, and roof rails. Available equipment includes LED steering responsive headlights, LED fog lights, heated side mirrors, a power moonroof, and a power liftgate.

Inside, the cabin is clean, well ordered and roomy. If you don’t need eight seats, I strongly encourage the seven-seat layout. The middle-row captains’ chairs are very comfortable. They slide and tilt forward for ease of access to the third row. They also allow for more legroom (especially for the middle seated passenger).

2019 Subaru AscentThe Ascent was absolutely designed with families in mind. You’ll find 19 drink holders, although they can be filled with other items. Look around and you’ll find places to stash your phones and door cutouts for resting elbows. The front seats are comfortable, although if they were a bit wider they’d please the largest drivers amongst us.

Standard interior features include full power accessories, cloth seats, and three-zone climate control.

The list of available equipment includes a heated steering wheel, power front seats, leather-trimmed seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated outboard second-row seats, and woodgrain trim.

Technology and Safety

Subaru is synonymous with safety and it is also a technology leader. The automaker marries the two with its EyeSight Driver Assist Technology.

EyeSight acts as an extra set of eyes and includes lane departure and sway warning with lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, pre-collision throttle management, pre-collision braking, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and reverse automatic braking. Standard across the Ascent model line, the technology is as advanced as anything offered elsewhere — typically, however, most manufacturers don’t offer these features except on top-trim models.

2019 Subaru Ascent
EyeSight, Subaru’s driver-assist technology, includes automatic braking and adaptive cruise control.

A 2019 Ascent with its available automatic adjusting headlamps (as featured on my test Limited model) earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Subaru typically garners the highest scores, underscoring its stellar reputation for all things safety.

The standard audio package includes a 6.5-inch screen. You’ll also find a six-speaker audio system with a CD player, HD Radio, and satellite radio. Other features include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, USB ports, auxiliary audio input, navigation, Bluetooth, and a host of cloud-based applications. Options include an 8-inch color display, additional USB ports, and the Harman Kardon audio system.

On the Road With the 2019 Subaru Ascent

When I took delivery of the 2019 Ascent and drove it for the first time, I forgot that this model doesn’t have the six-cylinder engine used in some Subaru models.

Instead, the Ascent is powered by an all-new turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. This is a BOXER engine, which means the cylinders are horizontally opposed, a layout prized by Subaru and Porsche alike.

2019 Subaru Ascent
Subaru’s all-new Boxer engine powers the Ascent.

What’s noteworthy here is that the engine bangs out 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque and is paired with a continuously variable transmission.

Step-off acceleration imbues confidence and when full power is needed, the turbo spools quickly. To my surprise, turbo lag was absent and that’s no small feat. Usually, when pressing the gas pedal with impunity, the engine will hesitate slightly as the turbo activates. Happily, this was not the case with this Subaru, which only heightened this model’s driving experience.

Another plus was the CVT. It behaved more like an automatic transmission as the built-in “steps” kept it from “stretching” under hard acceleration. You can also move the transmission shifter into sport mode and activate the paddle shifters. Here, the transmission mimics eight forward shift points.

As for off-roading, the Ascent can handle light-duty work with ease. The standard X-mode variable transfer clutch lock control adjusts the all-wheel-drive mapping as well as throttle control and activates hill descent control. These features are useful for gravelly roads, but you won’t want to tackle the rocky terrain.

As for fuel economy, the first two trims make an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The two top trims lose 1 mpg. Another important feature is this model’s 5,000-pound towing capacity, the most we’ve seen from Subaru. That puts Subaru in good company, matching the top capacity of models like the Ford Explorer and ahead of the GMC Acadia (4,000 pounds) and the Mazda CX-9 (3,500 pounds).

2019 Subaru Ascent

Parting Thoughts: 2019 Subaru Ascent

The Subaru Ascent does what it needs to do as it goes up against the top models in its class. Now, Subaru shoppers don’t have to leave the brand as their seating and storage needs increase. Indeed, not only does this model seat up to eight, but storage capacity maxes out at 86.5 cubic feet with the second- and third-row seats folded.

That Subaru supplies its EyeSight technology across the model line means customers don’t have to upgrade and pay more to get what they want. The same can be said for all-wheel drive. That said, we think the Premium model with the available Sporty Package offers a sensible choice for many shoppers. With a price point just above $40,000, it also matches well with the competition.

SEMA Shock Yellow Chevy Camaro Dazzles

October 16, 2018 by admin 1 Comment

There is yellow and then there is Shock Yellow.

SEMA 2019 Chevy Camaro
When your “yellow” is brighter than the center stripe, this is what you get.

We’re still two weeks away from the start of the 2018 SEMA Show, which has become the definitive auto show for all things wild and crazy. Just like its host city, Las Vegas.

Automotive manufacturers routinely roll out one or more special models at SEMA, capitalizing on the massive media attention this event supplies. SEMA isn’t open to the public, but thousands of journalists give it ample coverage, so its almost like you are there.

Shocking 2019 Chevrolet Camaro

GM isn’t waiting for the show to start to tease us with one very special version of the 2019 Chevy Camaro. The Shock yellow exterior color lives up to its name, a can’t miss model that also includes several concept touches.

Those touches include a relocated bow time emblem along with hood and fender graphics.

2019 Chevy Camaro

Joining this special model (which will be available in early 2019) is a personalized Camaro LT convertible. The convertible will be shown in Satin Steel Grey Metallic and feature concept red accents and other accessories. Chevrolet will showcase more than a dozen models in total at this year’s show.

The dazzling Camaro coincides with a fresh look Chevrolet gave to the 2019 Camaro. Explained Steve Majoros, director of Chevrolet Car and Crossover Marketing. “It’s the perfect canvas for personalization, and the new Shock color and available accessories demonstrate only some of the possibilities customers have to make the Camaro entirely theirs.”

New Accessories and Performance Parts

The expanded roster of Chevrolet accessories and performance parts were developed by the same designers and engineers who created the Camaro, in an effort to supply coherent design and performance unification.

You’ll find such features as all-new ground effects, a black wing spoiler, a fuel door with exposed carbon-fiber insert, black Camaro fender badges, 50-state-legal cold-air induction kits, Recaro seats, a Brembo six-piston front brake upgrade kit and various 1LE suspension components.

2018 Chevy Camaro

Refreshed Chevy Camaro

The 2019 Camaro refresh features new front-end styling on some models, including the fascia, grille, hood and lighting. The lighting upgrades include dual-element headlamps and new LED signature lighting. The ZL1 trim returns with its airflow optimized front-end styling, while the RS Package provides its own unique headlamps and signature lights.

From the rear, the 2019 Camaro gains new tail lamps with a dual-element design. Red lenses are found on the LS and LT trims, with the RS, SS and ZL1 decked in dark-tinted clear lenses.

Additional changes for 2019 include a new Turbo 1LE model. The Camaro SS now offers a 10-speed automatic transmission with pads shifters, launch control and line lock. Updated wheel designs, the latest in Chevrolet infotainment, an available full-display rearview camera and available forward collision alert round out the changes.

2018 SEMA Show

Auto Trends won’t have a direct presence in Las Vegas this year, but we’ll share highlights and special takes about the 2018 SEMA Show. Word has it that several flamboyant models are on tap, but that’s par for the course in a city that is known for its glitziness.

Keogh to Volkswagen: A Brilliant Move

October 11, 2018 by admin 1 Comment

Audi’s U.S. chief heads to Volkswagen.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan
The VW Tiguan is a roomy, compact SUV.

Audi of America’s loss is Volkswagen of America’s gain. This week, Volkswagen announced that Audi’s president will become president and CEO of the Volkswagen Group of America as well as head the Volkswagen brand in North America, beginning November 1, 2018.

Scott Keogh’s appointment is significant as it comes just as the Volkswagen brand seeks greater recognition in the ultra-competitive U.S. market. Notably, the German automaker forfeited its place as America’s favorite import brand of the 1950s and 1960s, allowing upstarts from Japan to take its place. Only recently, Volkswagen has been trying to expand its reach by introducing a pair of updated or new crossovers in the compact Tiguan and the midsize Atlas.

Moving Audi Forward

Keogh joined Audi in 2006 as its chief marketing officer. In 2012, he was appointed president just as Audi was undertaking a stateside expansion that doubled sales from 2010 to 2015. Today, Audi is the fourth best-selling luxury automotive brand in the U.S., trailing only Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus.

Scott Keogh
Scott Keogh, from Audi to Volkswagen Group leadership.
Through September, Audi’s U.S. sales are up 3.92 percent on 164,834 units sold. For the same period, the mainstream Volkswagen brand is enjoying a 5.45-percent increase based on 266,217 units sold.

Both brands are thriving in a marketplace where overall sales are down 4 percent so far this year.

Audi’s ascendancy, of course, cannot be attributed to just one person. That said, Keogh has instilled confidence in the brand and will turn over the reigns to Mark Del Rosso, who is currently serving as the head of Bentley of the Americas.

Del Rosso will assume his new position on December 1. His replacement has not yet been named.

Finding Volkswagen’s Place

Although Keogh joins Volkswagen as is sales improve, the brand is still attempting to find its way in a fast-changing market. The earlier diesel scandal still looms over the company, which has had to pay tens of billions of dollars in fines and compensation costs. Importantly, its once trusty line of diesel engines is now gone. The automaker has since redirected its investment strategy to electric vehicles, but the company is still playing catch up.

Volkswagen’s strongest vehicle lines have long been the Golf and Jetta, along with their many variants. But as consumer interests shift to crossovers, Volkswagen has been making the transition too. Indeed, in recent years we have seen an all-new Tiguan, a compact crossover SUV, updated to take on its current competitors. The previous model was considered too small to matter much, but the new model corrects that deficiency.

2018 Volkswagen Atlas
The VW Atlas is this brand’s largest SUV.

The surprise hit (for some analysts, but not this one) is the Atlas, a seven-passenger, midsize crossover SUV. The new model succeeds in a segment led by the likes of the Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot and Nissan Pathfinder.

Though its sales pale in comparison to the best sellers, Volkswagen moves more Atlas models than the Buick Enclave and Mazda CX-9.

Keogh and the Challenges Ahead

Besides electrification, Volkswagen has other challenges to tackle. Likely, we’ll see additional variations on the VW Atlas theme, with five-passenger and hybrid versions likely. A subcompact SUV is very much needed, although we like VW’s strategy whereby the Golf SportWagen and Golf Alltrack supply something different for the market.

Volkswagen must also decide whether the midsize Passat sedan deserves a lease on life. Built at the company’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, manufacturing plant, that space might be better used for a utility vehicle. We think Volkswagen will eventually discontinue the Passat, while introducing the new Arteon sedan. It’ll stay with its core Golf and Jetta cars and lean on an ever-widening range of people movers to increase market share.

If Keogh is able to replicate at least a portion of Audi’s success while overseeing the Volkswagen Group, the automaker may very well find itself taking away customers from its many competitors. That’s something that should send a shudder through corporate boardrooms in Detroit, Tokyo, Seoul and elsewhere.

This sleek Arteon may replace both the CC and Passat.

Rogue Sport Delivers a Difference for Nissan

October 9, 2018 by admin 10 Comments

The Rogue Sport is one of three strong Nissan small crossovers.

2018.5 Nissan Rogue Sport
The Nissan Rogue Sport fills the white space between two crossover models.

Small crossovers are the primary mode of transportation for many families. Every manufacturer sells them and in the case of Nissan you have three models to consider: Kicks, Rogue Sport and Rogue.

The Nissan Rogue Sport shares little with its larger sibling, the compact Rogue, although Nissan combines the sales of these two vehicles for reporting purposes. What you have with Nissan’s crossover strategy is subcompact and compact models with the Rogue Sport falling somewhere between the two. Thus, you wouldn’t be wrong if you considered the Rogue Sport a “white space” model, bridging the narrow divide between the two smallest SUV segments.

Nissan Rogue Sport: Updated by Halves

Our recent test model was a 2018.5 Nissan Rogue Sport. The half-year designation underscores several changes brought to the model mid-year, including additional safety features (i.e., automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning, and rear cross traffic alert), a minor update to the grille to accommodate the radar/front camera for the available around view monitor and safety systems, and select trim upgrades.

2018.5 Nissan Rogue Sport

Though the mid-year designation is used by Nissan, it is doubtful you’ll see this information appear on your car’s registration. One further note: mid-year upgrades, although quite uncommon, are not unusual. Nissan has used them for decades, dating back to its Datsun days.

You can find our full review of the 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport here. Instead of rehashing what was said earlier, we’ll concentrate on this model’s highlights moving forward. There is much to consider for the consumer wanting to make an informed decision.

1. Styling we can embrace.

Nissan doesn’t shy away from evocative or what some may say is provocative styling. Its midsize Murano once included a cabriolet version, demonstrating that a convertible and a crossover are not mutually exclusive. And then there is the Nissan Juke, a model since replaced by the Kicks. Its styling pushed the limits and was clearly overboard for some shoppers.

2018.5 Nissan Rogue SportIf you’re looking for outlandish styling, the Rogue Sport will disappoint. In fact, the designers were careful to work with a canvas that is at once curvaceous and elegant. Inside and out, the look seems almost upscale — a far cry from the more pedestrian styles we’ve seen before.

We think the Rogue Sport’s style will grab consumer attention in a very positive way.

2. There’s a lot of value wrapped within the base model.

Available in three trims — S ($22,110), SV ($23,740), and SL ($27,190) — add $995 for destination and another $1,350 for all-wheel drive — much value is found in the base model.

2018.5 Nissan Rogue SportWith it, you’ll find such features as approach lighting, power outside mirrors, full power accessories, Siri Eyes Free, blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking.

Automotive manufacturers have been expanding their list of standard features for years. It is good to see Nissan doing so without puffing up the price considerably. That doesn’t mean you’re not paying for the upgrades, rather you’re enjoying them at a reasonable cost.

3. All-wheel drive is an option.

Nissan’s Kicks is a smart little crossover, but it doesn’t offer all-wheel drive. The same can be said for the competing Toyota C-HR, a purposeful omission to keep both models affordable.

As for the Rogue Sport, you’ll find the standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive, just like the Rogue crossover. If you live in a snowy climate, you’ll want to begin your small crossover search with the AWD Rogue Sport in mind.

2018.5 Nissan Rogue Sport

4. Interior space may be smaller than what you want.

Size-wise, the Rogue Sport is closer in proportions to the Kicks than the Rogue. This means the interior isn’t as roomy as you might want, although on paper seating is for five.

If you are a family of four with small children, the Rogue Sport should work out just fine. But if your youngsters are almost as tall as you, then rear legroom may not be sufficient.

5. A cargo compartment with lots of versatility.

Credit Nissan with taking the cargo area and making it into something highly functional. Not only will you find ample storage space — 22.9 cubic feet with the seats in place or 61.1 cubic feet with the rear seat folded — but you’ll find Nissan’s Divide-N-Hide cargo management system on most models.

This system adjusts load floor for better storage of small items. Yes, it makes a difference if storage options are important to you.

2018.5 Nissan Rogue Sport

6. More efficient than expected, but with a corresponding trade-off in power.

Crossovers lose some efficiencies compared with their car equivalent. A higher profile and available all-wheel drive are among the factors that decrease wind resistance and add weight. Still, the EPA rates this model at 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway for a combined 28 mpg. Choose the all-wheel-drive model and the combined fuel economy drops by just 1 mpg.

Still, the trade-off here is apparent as the Rogue Sport’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has a leisurely output of 141 horsepower and 147 pound-feet of torque. Nissan pairs this engine with a continuously variable transmission. The CVT is an important contributor to overall fuel efficiency.

7. Prices can climb sharply.

Just as the base model brings much value to the segment, a fully-loaded Rogue Sport can easily top $30,000. That’s a lot of cash for such a small vehicle.

This also means shoppers should look closely at the compact Rogue to compare equipment levels and price. The better overall value just may lie with the larger Rogue.

2018.5 Nissan Rogue Sport

Parting Thoughts: Nissan Rogue Sport

One thing about the Nissan Rogue Sport is that its nearest competitor is the Toyota C-HR, at least from a size standpoint. Even so, the Rogue Sport offers all-wheel drive while the Toyota does not.

Based on its own merits, the Rogue Sport acquits itself. It might serve well as a commuter vehicle for the professional who needs the versatility and prefers the higher profile than let’s say the Sentra, Nissan’s compact car.

If that’s the case, then the Rogue Sport should be given your every consideration.

Hold Fast: VinFast Does Paris

October 2, 2018 by admin 3 Comments

Vietnam throws its hat into the automotive manufacturing ring.

VinFast LUX SA2.0
The VinFast SUV reflects Italian design acumen.

Vietnam has a homegrown car company known as VinFast and this upstart automaker is showcasing its new models at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. VinFast is not a household name and its vehicles aren’t likely to be sold in the U.S. anytime soon.

VinFast LUX SA2.0Nevertheless, the Vietnamese automaker has two models to show for it, with both going into production in 2019.

VinFast is the first Vietnamese automaker, but it isn’t the first company to produce new cars in this Southeastern Asia nation of nearly 100 million residents. Most passenger vehicles produced in Vietnam are from knock-down kits, cars partially assembled abroad then completed locally. Chevrolet, Hyundai, and Toyota are among the brands present.

As for VinFast, the company is making it clear that its Italian-inspired models are Vietnamese influenced.

VinFast LUX SA2.0The company tapped Pininfarina, the Italian design house with developing the new models based on consumer input. The result is two models, a sedan and a crossover utility vehicle, that the company believes reflect the country’s spirit.

VinFast calls its two models the LUX A2.0 and LUX SA2.0, names that hardly roll off of the tongue or are easy to commit to memory. Nevertheless, this naming strategy has been embraced by upstart automakers before (e.g., Ford Model T and A; every European manufacturer), but may eventually change especially as the company eyes foreign markets.

David Beckham Presents

Not wasting any time, VinFast tapped retired English professional footballer David Beckham to tout the brand. Beckham was introduced at the 2018 Paris Motor Show for the official unveiling of the two VinFast models.

“I’ve always been a car fanatic, and it’s a thrill to be here in Paris to celebrate the arrival of a new carmaker on the global stage. When I met you and your colleagues backstage earlier, the passion that you all have for the cars is infectious. It’s an inspirational story and I’m really excited to be part of this launch moment for VinFast,” noted Beckham to VinFast personnel.

VinFast
The VinFast sedan is based on a rear-wheel-drive architecture.

New Model Highlights

Not all details about the new model have surfaced yet. The only photos supplied by the manufacturer are exterior shots. But those photos do reveal the artistic design flair incorporated. VinFast could have chosen a more utilitarian look and satisfied its home audience. But the automaker is looking to begin exports not too soon after Vietnam consumers become acquainted with the brand.

VinFast LUX A2.0We do know that powering both models is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Apparently, there will be two performance variants. The first one will produce 173 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. The second one has an output of 231 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The sedan will offer both choices, while the utility vehicle will have the higher output version only.

Both models, by the way, offer standard rear-wheel drive. The SUV will also have an all-wheel-drive option. This is a common layout for premium European models.

Letting Loose and Looking Ahead

VinFast has already indicated it won’t stop with its two initial models. Indeed, the company has struck a deal with General Motors to market a city car under the VinFast name. VinFast and GM also have a partnership agreement in place, which resulted in the transfer of GM’s Hanoi automotive plant to VinFast.

VinFast LUX A2.0Other models planned include an electric car and an electric bus. All three models are currently under development.

What are VinFast’s chances of success? It may be quite good as the company has extensive government backing and sought early on to bring consumers to the development process. It would be foolish for anyone to underestimate the company’s potential, given that manufacturers such as Hyundai and Tesla have successfully disrupted the market in their own time and expertise.
