Jaguar Land Rover Brings Resources to Bear to Fight the Coronavirus Pandemic

March 31, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

Jaguar Land Rover models, including these new Defender models, are aiding Red Cross Societies around the world in the fight against the coronavirus.

The coronavirus pandemic, best known as COVID-19, is the world’s greatest challenge of our time. Hundreds of thousands of individuals have tested positive for the virus with likely millions more affected but showing no signs of symptoms at present.

We’ve reported about the impact the pandemic has had on the auto industry, which has shut down scores of manufacturing facilities around the world. This unprecedented move will have a far-reaching effect on the industry, perhaps lasting for many years.

JLR Responds; Redirects Press Fleet

Nevertheless, automakers are not simply waiting for the pandemic to end. Instead of sitting by the sidelines, many are proactively doing their part to meet the challenge.

Indeed, Jaguar Land Rover has deployed more than 160 vehicle globally to support emergency response organizations. Specifically, the Britain-based manufacturer has redirected dozens of British press fleet vehicles, including the all-new Defender SUV, to the British Red Cross. Consequently, the Red Cross is empowered to reach the most vulnerable citizens, including the senior population.

Simon Lewis, Head of Crisis Response, British Red Cross, elaborated on his organization’s response efforts. “This unprecedented global health emergency requires us all to pull together. As part of the British Red Cross response to coronavirus, we’re delving deep into the heart of communities across the UK to help strengthen support for the most vulnerable people through delivering essential food parcels and medicines to those unable to get out.”
Furthermore, an additional 65 vehicles are now deployed to support Red Cross Societies in several countries, including Australia, France, Spain, and South Africa. The company plans to offer additional vehicles to support the COVID-19 response moving forward.

An Enduring Red Cross Partnership

Jaguar Land Rover’s involvement with the International Red Cross spans more than 65 years. Down through the years, JLR has lent vehicles to Britain’s National Health Service. Moreover, the company is donating protective equipment, including wraparound eye gear for medical staff, to the NHS and is working closely with the British government to aid in various capacities.

Britain has been hard hit by this strain of the coronavirus, with more than 22,000 confirmed cases as of this writing. Some 1,408 individuals have died. The pandemic, though, is far from running its course with even more widespread outbreaks expected. Some fear that the virus may also produce a second wave, especially in China where it originated.

Auto Trends received a press statement from JLR regarding its involvement in the battle against COVID-19.

Said Finbar McFall, Jaguar Land Rover Customer Experience Director, “The health and safety of our employees, customers and their families remains our priority. Jaguar and Land Rover will do everything we can to support people in need around the world. Our partnership with the Red Cross goes back 65 years and we will work hand in hand with them to do all we can during this global health emergency. We will also provide help to those closer to home in our local communities. We can all play a part in helping the vulnerable during this global pandemic.”

JLR temporarily shuttered its British manufacturing facilities earlier this month, while maintaining production at plants in Brazil and India. The company hasn’t set a timeframe for resuming production, which likely will occur once the British government has lifted its lockdown directive.

Impact on U.S. Operations

In the U.S., JLR has largely curtailed its operation, with showrooms closed in various locations, depending on local “stay-at-home” edicts. Auto Trends will continue to report on industry happenings, including how manufacturers, suppliers, and other key players are responding to the crisis.

Auto Industry Reacts to Coronavirus Threat

March 30, 2020 by admin 1 Comment

General Motors and Ventec Life Systems are partnering to convert the GM Kokomo, Indiana ERC building for the production of Ventec ventilators in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. (Photo GM Corp.)
COVID-19 is turning the world upside down, with nearly every country and region reporting cases, including deaths. “Business as usual” is no longer the case as companies large and small adjust or in some cases shut down.
The auto industry is no exception and has, in fact, seen production stopped at most plants scattered across the United States. We examined the impact earlier this month (see Coronavirus Strikes; Industry Reacts). Today, the picture has changed with the major players doing their part to fight the battle.

Here are the latest updates from key original equipment manufacturers:

GM will build critical care ventilators. GM is not currently building vehicles as its production facilities remain shuttered following the COVID-19 outbreak. But one plant, it’s Kokoma, Indiana, manufacturing facility will soon come back online, as it launches production of critical care ventilators> for Ventec Life Systems. Ventec, based in Bothell, Washington, is unable to meet demand at its lone facility. With GM’s help, the companies will produce the ventilators needed by hospitals in the United States and abroad. A second GM plant, this one in Warren, Michigan, will soon assemble Level 1 masks. Within two weeks, GM should produce 50,000 masks per day, potentially doubling that number.

The 2020 Detroit Auto Show is canceled. The North American International Auto Show was last held in January 2019 and was supposed to move to a late spring/early summer schedule this year. Indeed, journalists marked June 2020 on their calendars, expecting to head to the Motor City for a warm-weather preview of new cars and concepts. The show, however, will not go on as the city will instead turn the host Cobo Center into a temporary hospital for the duration of the coronavirus crisis. The show’s organizers have already updated their page to reflect the next show, which is scheduled for June 11-26, 2021.

Dealerships reel under local “stay-at-home” directives. Tens of thousands of car dealership employees are on furlough as various “stay-at-home” edicts shutter showroom doors. The Penske Corp. has avoided layoffs so far as senior staff accepts pay cuts and Roger Penske and the company’s president, Rob Kurnick, forgo their salaries for the duration of the crisis according, to Autoweek. Dealers throughout the country have reduced hours or temporarily closed down and laid-off employees.

Plant shutdowns extend into April. March 30 was supposed to be the day for manufacturers to resume production, but that isn’t going to happen. GM, Ford, and Fiat Chrysler were among the first companies to shutter their plants and each will stay closed for at least another week. Volkswagen says it’ll restart production on April 5, while Toyota says it’ll bring its plants back online on April 20. These resumption dates, however, will likely change especially as President Trump extended the national pullback through April 30. That said, each state has its unique directives in place.

Manufacturers and lenders give consumers a break. With millions of new unemployment claims filed in March, many consumers are suddenly experiencing financial trouble. With finance and lease payments due, some people are unable to make their next payment. Fortunately, manufacturers are responding through their financing arms to give consumers a break. Depending on the company, payment deferrals and lease payment extensions are in place. That said, in some cases only consumers with top credit ratings are eligible. We’ve surveyed various schemes in place from Ford, Hyundai, Nissan, and others. Auto Trends recommends affected consumers contact their respective lender for guidance. Tell them your story and work out an agreement that’s right for you.

After COVID-19

At some point, the COVID-19 threat will be gone, with businesses returning to a new normal. Most American citizens will see some relief in April as unemployment checks arrive and as the IRS distributes $1,200 to $3,400 to eligible households. The industry will endure a deep sales slump in March and April, with the likely rebound beginning in May. We may see record sales by July as consumers who have delayed their purchases flood dealer showrooms. Again, all this is predicated on how the crisis plays out.

The Big and Burly Toyota Sequoia

March 28, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

The Toyota Sequoia is an enormous sport utility vehicle with room for seven. It is part of a small breed of traditional, truck-based models. In this case, it shares its underpinnings with the full-size Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

Though the market has shifted dramatically to car-based crossover utility vehicles, the Sequoia maintains its appeal in a niche dedicated to recreational pursuits, including camping, boating, fishing, and off-roading.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Review

For 2020, the Toyota Sequoia serves up its first TRD Pro trim, which was our test model. This year, the Tundra gains a new 7-inch touch-screen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Toyota offers the 2020 Sequoia in standard rear-wheel drive or available four-wheel drive. There are five trims for the choosing: SR5 ($49,980), TRD Sport ($52,695), Limited ($58,990), Platinum ($66,020), and TRD Pro ($64,105). Add $1,395 for the destination charge.

Exterior

What sets the TRD Pro apart from the Sequoia pack? A few things, including its big “TOYOTA” grille, Rigid LED fog lights, its Army Green patina, TRD black roof rack, 18-inch BBS forged-aluminum beaded wheels, and its black running boards. Together, these features represent distinctive items on the Sequoia.

The Sequoia’s canvas is as you would expect: raised, with strong shoulders, upright pillars, a slab body, and huge doors. Most trims come with LED headlamps, power-controlled and heated side mirrors, a power tilt-and-slide moonroof with a sunshade, and a power liftgate.

Interior

The Sequoia, along with the Toyota Land Cruiser, bring the full-bodied interior room to bear. But the Sequoia is slightly larger and better suited to hold the seven people it is designed to carry. The first two rows hold two individuals each with three-placement seating in the third row.

As expected, the best seats are upfront. They’re designed to cosset the driver and passenger, with ample back, hip, and thigh support. Do you wonder why some people are drawn to these types of vehicles? If they’re 6-foot-5-inches or taller, you’d understand.

We’re glad Toyota didn’t try to squeeze a bench seat in the second row. One would fit (and is available, if you must), but it would have rendered the third row mostly useless, especially for tall individuals. The second-row captain’s chairs, however, are supportive and comfortable on their own. They also fold and move forward for ease of access to the third row. That last row is best used by children, but adults can fit there for short trips.

The Sequoia’s interior is well behind the pack. It is more than a decade old and it looks it. The Expedition is the standard-bearer here and the two are far apart in looks (new GMC and Chevrolet models are on the way for 2021). The big knobs overwhelm the already large dashboard and the bulky center console. Average materials cover the cabin, including various painted silver trim touchpoints. We like the big center storage console and the double glove box, however.

You’ll find climate control, full power accessories, and power-controlled front seats. Most trims feature leather-covered seats. Heated and ventilated front seats are available.

Tech

Toyota cautiously expanded its smartphone capabilities, by first ensuring both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were compatible with its systems. Once it closed whatever gaps in proprietary software there were, it introduced the former followed by the latter. This year, the Sequoia has both systems available and a new touch-screen display at the ready.

The Sequoia TRD Pro comes with an 8-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth and Amazon Alexa connectivity, and two USB ports. Some trims include or offer navigation, but with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it isn’t necessary. JBL audio systems and a rear DVD entertainment system are other options of note.

Safety

Every Sequoia trim comes with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), a package that includes automatic headlamps, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, and dynamic cruise control. That’s not as generous a package and you’d find on more modern Toyota models, which come with such features as lane tracing assist and rear braking, but it is a welcome offering nonetheless.

Some trims, including the TRD Pro, come with blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Lane change assist and trailer sway control are also included.

Performance

Motivating the 2020 Sequoia is a Toyota V8 mainstay: a 5.7-liter engine with 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. It is the largest V8 that Toyota has ever offered in the U.S. Power travels to the rear or all four wheels, utilizing a 6-speed automatic transmission.

This powertrain combination is up to the task, but it isn’t the best in the industry. Ford with its twin-turbo V6 and GM with its small-block V8 offers more powerful and/or efficient options. Indeed, the Ford Expedition delivers more power and efficiency, while the Chevrolet Tahoe’s engine utilizes cylinder deactivation for improved fuel economy. Both manufacturers pair these engines with 10-speed automatic transmissions.

The Sequoia shows no lack of step-off power, accelerating steadily as it approaches highway speeds. But it is when operating under full throttle that the differences between this powertrain and its chief competitors become noticeable. The Sequoia’s transmission simply takes its time to find the right gear for the moment, whereas the Ford and GM units work fast and seamlessly.

No big SUV can handle twisty roads and cornering like a car, and we wouldn’t expect it to. After all, the high profile and steep payload combine to limit what this vehicle can do when it isn’t driving in a straight line.

Perhaps one of the most favorable attributes of our TRD Pro test model is its off-road capabilities. We weren’t able to take it on our favorite trails, which were still closed for the winter. But, gravel-covered backroads and adjacent clay sloughs proved its mettle. Indeed, we wouldn’t hesitate to take the Sequoia off-road except down narrow trails where a big SUV simply doesn’t belong.

In TRD Pro guise, the Sequoia shines brightest, thanks to ample under-body cladding. It also comes with Fox shock absorbers, designed to increase damping force for a more comfortable ride on the toughest terrain. It has a cat-back exhaust system, one that purrs when idling and roars under hard throttle.

Depending on the model, the 2020 Sequoia pulls between 7,000 to 7,400 pounds. That’s less than its competitors, but at least Toyota supplies a strong engine to handle the work. As for fuel efficiency, you’ll be hard-pressed to achieve the EPA-estimated 15 mpg combined this model delivers. At least it takes less-costly regular grade unleaded gasoline.

Competitive Set

There are very few mainstream competitors operating in the full-size SUV sphere. You’ll find the Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Tahoe, along with the Nissan Armada. There are a few other models to consider, including the Chevrolet Suburban and the GMC Yukon XL.

Our Recommendation

If you’re in pursuit of off-road adventuring, then the TRD Pro is the right place to look. It comes fully loaded with no options packages available, making its approximate $65,000 published cost a decent value in the segment. Discounting, though, should shave several thousands of dollars off your final cost.

Driven: Land Rover Range Rover Velar

March 26, 2020 by admin 2 Comments

Land Rover’s place in the SUV market is defined by two product lines: Range Rover and Discovery. The Range Rover series represents the apex of the brand, while the Discovery line is representative of those models we typically think of as Land Rover.

The Range Rover Velar is the third of four Range Rover models, situated between the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. The eponymous Range Rover is the range-topping model. The Velar, though, is no shrinking violet. It brings to the Range Rover line a distinctly modern look inside and out, and a long list of features.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar Review

Our focus model is the range-topping SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, which starts at $90,790. Our test model added a few extras, bringing its final cost to just above $95,000, including the destination charge.

Exterior

The Velar may be the most modern of all Range Rover models, although a case can also be made for the Evoque. This five-passenger midsize luxury SUV is more subdued upfront than some competitors, eschewing an oversized grille, deep cutouts, and huge lights for something more subtle.

But subtle doesn’t mean it lacks panache – the Velar simply finds a way to impart elegance without gauche. Who said sophistication must be over the top? Strong shoulders, powerful roof pillars, a high beltline, and a formal expression define this model.

The SVAutobiography delivers features unique to this trim, including 21- or 22-inch gloss dark gray wheels, red brake calipers, special paint options, and bright chrome trim. An active sports exhaust system, sports suspension, and a sliding panoramic roof are other features of note.

Interior

Just as Range Rover pulls off the exterior with a peerless design, the interior delivers its own winning attributes.

The Velar’s cabin is roomy, bright, and rich in luxurious appointments. The best seats are upfront and this is where Range Rover pulls out all the stops with plush, supportive thrones. They come heated and ventilated, and deliver massaging support. They’re ideal for your in-between visits to the chiropractor and likely will be used frequently to relax tight and tired back muscles.

As comfortable as the front seats are, it is the material that wows the senses. As you might expect, Range Rover offers standard leather-covered seats. They’re beautiful and comfortable, just as you would expect from this quintessential British marque. But it is the available woven-wool seats that look and feel best, a natural alternative we think is bound to become an industry pacesetter. And not just for its feel, but as a choice for consumers who don’t like animal hides.

The rear seat is best for two and bearable for three adults. The power-reclining outboard seatbacks are a welcome feature.

Other features of note include a heated steering wheel, metal touches such as aluminum gearshift handles, thick carpeting, and choice interior color combinations.

The Velar’s standard storage space measures 29.4 cubic feet or 60.2 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. These numbers are about average for the class. This SUV pulls up to 5,500 pounds when properly equipped.

Tech

Where some competitors have big screens bolted to the top of the center console, the Velar’s screens are integrated into the dashboard and center console. Yes, there are two 10-inch-screens at work, with each tasked with managing different controls, including the infotainment (top) and passenger comfort (bottom). Called Touch Pro Duo, the system enables navigation on the top screen while playing media on the bottom screen.

All models come with Smart Phone Pack, representing a suite of features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optionally, customers can upgrade to a rear-seat entertainment system with a pair of 8-inch screens embedded in the rear of the front-seat headrests. Choose this option if regular rood trips are part of your family’s experience.

Land Rover taps Meridian to supply its sound systems and the Velar offers choices worth considering. On the top end, the 22-speaker unit supplies concert-hall-like sound throughout the cabin with every seating position the “best seat in the house.”

Satellite radio and HD Radio are included; USB input, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless phone charging, and Bluetooth are other features of note.

Safety

All Velar trims come with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and front and rear parking assist. Our top-trim model included each of the extras: driver attention monitoring, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display. Some mainstream models include most of these features as standard equipment.

Like other pricey models, neither the IIHS nor the NHTSA has put the Velar through crash testing. That said, we think its high-profile and weight are benefits that work in its favor.

Performance

Powering the SVAutobiography is a supercharged V8 engine with 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. This engine delivers massive amounts of power from the onset, enabling this two-ton-plus beast to scoot from 0-60 mph in just above four seconds. That’s laudable for any vehicle, but it seems even more impressive for this substantial SUV.

By utilizing a supercharger, this Velar enjoys full power from the start, although it drops somewhat at passing speed. That’s the opposite of a turbocharger that spools up to deliver its best power at wide-open throttle.

The Velar’s heft seems largely absent as the V8 pushes forward. Other Velar trims offer a 2.0-liter turbo-four or a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. This one is a far superior choice, but is exclusive to the top trim. All models work with an eight-speed automatic transmission, a knob-controlled unit that serves up cogs with ease.

With its air suspension, the Velar almost feels as if it floats, with the cabin well isolated from rough road surfaces. The steering is light, but engaging. This SUV handles reasonably well on twisty roads and while pulling out of corners but make no mistake that this is a high-profile vehicle and it can’t match the Jaguar F-Type in corner-carving.

You can take the Velar off-road with its terrain response system enabling your excursion. We think, though, the Defender is the better choice in this department, although the Velar’s active rear locking differential proves its mettle.

Competitive Set

One of the Velar’s closest competitors is the Jaguar F-Pace, its corporate cousin. Other models to consider include the Porsche Macan, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, BMW X5, and the Volvo XC60.

Our Recommendation

Inasmuch as the Velar SVAutobiography is an outstanding trim in its own right, we think the middle Velar S trim is the best choice. This one comes with the twin-turbo six-cylinder engine and supplies access to many trim embellishments, audio upgrades, and design features. You’ll pay about $70,000 for a well-equipped model, which is still thousands of dollars less than some competitors.

Highlights of the 2020 Porsche Macan

March 24, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

The 2020 Macan is one of two Porsche SUVs.

We love Porsche, arguably the best brand of vehicles in the world. In the early part of this century, the company expanded beyond its sports car roots by introducing the Cayenne SUV in 2003. Seven years later it followed with its first sedan, the Panamera. Today, we see a fleet evenly divided between sports cars and other vehicles, thanks to the small Macan SUV which rolled out in 2015. The Macan borrows elements from across the Porsche spectrum, deliver an inspiring utility vehicle on a small footprint.

What’s New for 2020

Now in its sixth year, the first-generation Macan features updated engines with more power. As for the rest of the lineup, the changes are small.

Porsche Macan Highlights

Room for five, in a pinch. The Porsche Macan seats five, at least on paper. The front seats are the ideal place to seat with comfortable thrones at the ready. The rear split-bench seat is best for two and three, but only in a pinch. Still, the amount of legroom available is quite limited, which means the back seat is most suitable for youngsters. With 17.6 cubic feet of standard storage space, the Macan may not be the vehicle you take on long trips. That said, if it is just the two of you, that space nearly triples with the rear seat folded.

Excellent fit, finish, and quality. Porsche never disappoints us in all things quality. The Macan, with a starting price just above $50,000 maintains our expectations. The look, fit, and finish is what you’d expect, with quality materials throughout. You’ll find various leather and suede finishes on most models with aluminum, wood, and carbon fiber also available. Porsche supplies a dizzying level of customization that’ll give your Macan a unique look.

Three engine choices. What’s under the hood of a Porsche may be the most important element of this brand. You’ll find three engine choices, beginning with a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four with 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The second engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder with 348 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The third engine is a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder, which generates 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It’s output increases to a whopping 434 horsepower in the top-end Porsche Turbo model. All-wheel-drive and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission are standard.

Fast and furious. You’d expect any Porsche model to be fast and the Macan is all that and more. At least when moving beyond the base engine. Sure, the turbo four-cylinder engine is sprightly, but it doesn’t deliver nearly the performance numbers you’d expect in a Porsche. The middling 3.0-liter V6 is the better choice as it supplies excellent step-off acceleration and passing power. But it is the twin-turbo six-cylinder that’s the performance maven, as it delivers raw off-the-mark acceleration and inspiring passing power. Regardless of the chosen engine, the Macan supplies direct steering, terrific handling, and track aspirations. Its higher profile means it isn’t as connected to the road, but not by much. The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is amazing with its clean and quick shifts. You may miss a manual, but this one shines!

Safety and technology is a mixed bag. When it comes to safety features, you’ll pay extra to receive most of the driver-assist technologies we expect these days. Lane departure warning is standard, but everything else is extra, including blind-spot warning, active lane control, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. The list of standard in-cabin tech features includes a 10.9-inch touch-screen display, USB input, a 10-speaker audio system, and navigation. The list of options is impressive and includes an alluring Burmeister audio package.

Making Your Macan

The base Macan model costs $52,000, while a fully loaded Porsche Turbo model will run around $85,000. That’s a lot of money to pay for a small SUV from a luxury make, but it isn’t your run-of-the-mill model either. Indeed, with performance and luxury features combined, this SUV delivers a complete package and may have you reconsidering your Porsche 718 Cayman want.

Living Large: Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV

March 20, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

The Mercedes-Benz GLS is a full-size SUV with room for seven.
It features a mild hybrid system and has two engine choices.

Mercedes-Benz has comfortably found its spot in the utility vehicle sphere, offering a variety of models to suit almost every need. This renowned German manufacturer of luxury vehicles still produces multiple lines of cars, but it is its SUVs that draw the lion’s share of customers.

For 2020, Mercedes-Benz serves up an all-new GLS, which has long served as a flagship for its SUV line. Yes, that argument can be made for the far pricier G-Class. But the “G Wagon” is very much a niche or halo model, and not representative of what the average luxury buyer will consider.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS Review

The 2020 GLS is offered in GLS 450 ($75,950) and GLS 580 ($98,800) trims. That’s about $5,000 more than the 2019 model, but Mercedes-Benz added many tech features, including a 48-volt battery system.

Numerous packages and individual upgrades, especially with the standard model, will push your final cost northward accordingly. The GLS seats seven across its three rows.

Standard 19- or available 21-inch wheels grace the GLS.

Exterior

The full-size luxury SUV segment has its share of over-the-top models, but the GLS seems more subdued than most. It eschews oversized grilles and bigly taillamps for a more conservative design, although that doesn’t mean it is plain. Indeed, the GLS delivers a refined presence and, therefore, likely attracts a share of M-B faithful making the switch from a car to an SUV for the first time.

Each model comes with a full array of LED lighting front and back. Mercedes equips the GLS with standard 19-inch wheels, power-folding and heated side mirrors, and a power liftgate. Various packages bring in such features as gloss black exterior highlights, 21-inch wheels with black accents, a trailer hitch, and a panoramic sunroof.

Interior

Lavish is the appropriate word to describe the GLS’ interior. That’s no surprise as this marque rarely sells itself short, even with its entry-level models. Mercedes takes great care with its designs, making sure every detail is properly executed.

The power-controlled front seats are very comfortable and are heated. Ventilation and massaging are included with the 580. But the power seating doesn’t stop with the front seats. Indeed, both the second-row 60/40 split bench seat and the third-row 50/50 split-bench seat are power controlled. Other features include a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, dual-zone climate control (five zones in the 580), a power tilt-and-slide sunroof, and a retractable and removable storage cover.

A digital dash blends with the center console to form an impressive display.

There are many upgrades available, including six-passenger seating capacity whereby the center bench seat is swapped out for pair of captain’s chairs. Specially contoured bench seats, ventilated front seats, heated second- and third-row seats, heated first- and second-row armrests, aluminum and wood trim upgrades, a textile upper dashboard, and leather options are other choices.

The best seats in the house are in the first two rows with limited legroom in the third row. We think youngsters will do fine in the last row. The standard storage space measures 17.4 cubic feet with approximately 45 cubic feet behind the second row and 84.7 cubic feet with both seats folded.

Tech

“12.3” is a magic number for Mercedes-Benz. That’s the size for both the digital instrument panel and the center console. They sit side by side and seem like a singular, enormous panel. It’s an awe-inspiring design that isn’t simply eye candy. The display is both knob and touch-screen controlled.

The list of standard features includes a Burmeister audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, satellite radio, HD Radio, wireless charging, a 115-volt power outlet, and a whopping 9 USB ports. An upgraded Burmeister audio system is also available.

Available massaging seats make the front seats the ideal thrones.

Safety

Mercedes equips the GLS with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and cross-traffic alert. Advanced features, such as active lane control, automatic lane change assist, brake assist, distance control and the like are bundled within an option package.

The GLS also comes with something called “Car-to-X communication,” which is a function that’s ahead of its time. Specifically, it serves as the precursor technology that’s coming down the pike, namely enabling the driver to “see” down the road several bends in advance, to gain advanced notice of upcoming hazards. Although this feature is in place, it isn’t yet practical for everyday use.

Performance

The GLS is a tale of two engines. We think most shoppers will be happy with the standard 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that comes with the GLS 450 model. Upgrading to the GLS 580 supplies you with a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine. You’ll also pay nearly $23,000 for the upgrade, although the added cost includes many amenities beyond the V8 engine.

You’ll find 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque with the standard engine. That’s equivalent to a small-block V8 and should, therefore, satisfy most people. But there is also a “secret sauce” at play, namely a 48-volt battery system. This one adds 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque under full throttle, and does likewise in the V8. Both engines work with a 9-speed automatic transmission that’s tasked with sending power to all four wheels.

It was this particular arrangement under the hood of our test drive vehicle, which gave us ample opportunities to put it through the paces. Happily, the inline-six shined, beginning with generous step-off acceleration and ample passing power. One result of the auxiliary 48V system is that it mitigates turbo lag. We also think this kind of hybrid arrangement will soon become widespread, especially as the extra voltage handles increasingly larger electrical demand brought on by sophisticated navigation and infotainment systems as well as through safety equipment packages and upcoming autonomous drive.

The GLS is a bulky vehicle with very little steering feedback, but it does provide nimble handling. The ride is very comfortable with even some of the harshest bumps absorbed by the suspension system. Mercedes offers a four-wheel traction control system for off-road pursuits, although we doubt there are but a few people who would buy one with off-roading in mind.

If the standard engine doesn’t rock your world, then the beefy V8 with 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque will win your heart. The performance numbers don’t include the auxiliary 48-volt system that simply pushes these figures yet higher. We can hardly imagine what a likely AMG version will supply or a possible Maybach variant.

A power liftgate is standard across the GLS line.

Competitive Set

The BMW X7 and Audi Q7 are just two competitors to consider. You’ll also find in this segment the Cadillac Escalade, Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, Infiniti QX80, Lexus LX, and the upcoming Genesis GV80. Most competitors come with standard rear-wheel drive. The Audi is all-wheel-drive only.

Our Recommendation

If money is no consideration, the GLS 580 with every option taken is where you’ll begin your search. Quite easily, you’ll reach the $100K limit and surge well above that figure in short order.

Our pick is the base engine as it is more than suitable for the task at hand. With the electric generator spooled up, the level of performance increases substantially. In any case, various package offerings should bring your final price to around $90,000.

Coronavirus Strikes; Industry Reacts

March 19, 2020 by admin 3 Comments

It was only a matter of time before the U.S. auto industry reacted to the coronavirus pandemic, as both domestic and foreign-based manufacturers announced plans this week to thwart the spread of the contagion. The action taken varies from automaker to automaker, but ultimately a full production shut down ranging from a few days to up to two weeks, perhaps more, is occurring.

Following positive COVID-19 test results from one or more plant workers, companies such as Fiat Chrysler, GM, and Ford are idling their plants for at least 10 days. The companies responded to union pressure to shut down their plants, following Honda’s decision to take a six-day break of its own.

Honda workers are not represented by a union.

The industry-wide shutdown is unprecedented and will go beyond the pullback manufacturers faced in 2008 as a result of a deep recession. Then, all three U.S. manufacturers faced collapse with Chrysler and GM ultimately walking through bankruptcy. After that, Chrysler merged with Fiat, and all three companies restructured and built vast reserves of cash to weather the next cyclical downturn.

After years of anticipation, that downturn is here, driven largely by a pandemic that’s shaken much of the world.

Nissan will shut its plants from March 20 to April 6, while Hyundai closed its Alabama plant and is disinfecting the same following a positive COVID-19 result for one of its workers.

Toyota plans a two-day pause on March 23 and 24 for all its North American locations, allowing for special cleaning as well as to readjust production for lowered demand. The company says it will resume production on March 25.

Mercedes-Benz has yet to announce plans for its Alabama plant, but it is likely to shut it down as part shortages loom. According to Bloomberg, the company is experiencing a parts shortage as the European Union is amid a 30-day closure. Italy, Spain, and France are all hard-hit with virus cases in Germany and other countries increasing sharply. Mercedes imports engines and transmissions from Europe, which power two utility vehicles built stateside.

As of this writing, Kia has no plans to scale back production or temporarily reduce worker headcount at its West Point, Georgia, manufacturing plant. The automaker told the LaGrange Daily News that it has a COVID-19 response team tasked with monitoring the situation and minimizing risks. These include restricting public access and shutting down the facility’s fitness center.

BMW intends to keep its Spartanburg (Greer), SC, plant operational, at least for now. The company ordered many of its office employees to work from home, but it will keep its plant running.

Responding to a Fox Carolina inquiry via Twitter, BMW said, “In regard to closing Plant Spartanburg, we continue to monitor the situation in South Carolina daily and are in close alignment with both state and local government officials. We recognize that we are in a dynamic situation and we are prepared to adjust quickly based on the daily analysis of the current environment. In parallel we have implemented numerous measures to protect the health and safety of our employees.”

Auto Trends has learned that other automakers with a manufacturing or business presence in the U.S. are also responding to the crisis.

For instance, Tesla plans to temporarily reduce its workforce from 10,000 individuals to 2,500, although a timeline hasn’t been announced. The company finds itself in an unusual position as the area is under a mandatory three-week shelter-in-place directive.

But employees who are going to work are violating the edict, which only makes allowance for essential personnel to travel. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Department contends the plant must shut down, although it may permit a smaller workforce to remain for non-production work only.

Top-Down Verve:
Ford Mustang Convertible

March 18, 2020 by admin 3 Comments

The 2020 Ford Mustang Convertible in Velocity Blue.

What is that we like about the Ford Mustang? Well, everything! The Mustang reached iconic status long ago, but we think the last two generations have solidified its place in pony car lore. The current Mustang features select classic styling cues, such as sequential turn signals, while adding contemporary attributes that make it more aerodynamic. Offered in hardtop and convertible styles, the 2020 Ford Mustang is a winner.

2020 Ford Mustang Review

Ford offers the 2020 Mustang in hardtop (fastback) and convertible configurations. The fastback starts at $26,670, while the convertible begins at $32,170. Add $1,195 for the destination charge. The Mustang, a rear-wheel-drive model, comes with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox. If you upgrade to the 10-speed automatic, you’ll pay an additional $1,595.

Ford offers the Mustang in fastback and convertible configurations.

Exterior

We’ve heard so much about the Mustang down through the years, especially the current-generation model that debuted in 2015, marking this pony car’s 50th anniversary. The changes since then have been mostly modest, even subtle, as Ford stays true to its timeless look.

Our test model, though, came in one of the Mustang’s more eye-catching colors – Velocity Blue. It’s a fetching patina, one that draws attention to the vehicle, while offering a handsome contrast to the black convertible roof.

But the car is the most stunning with the roof down. Here, its silhouette becomes more graceful with every corner, line, and curve accented. Or at least it seemed that way. In all, the top-down Mustang makes for a stunning look, one the Dodge Challenger cannot match and that the Chevrolet Camaro doesn’t pull off nearly as well.

Interior

We’re accustomed to sport coupes such as the Ford Mustang offering excellent room in the first row and awful space in the second row. Nevertheless, the Mustang is a 2+2 model – you’ll simply want to use the second row for additional storage space or perhaps ask your guests to pull their legs up to their chests as you drive around town.

Across the board, we’ve found every Mustang driver’s seat to be comfortable, supportive, and supplying varying levels of bolstering. It’s very much a driver’s car with the instrument panel dominated by a pair of circular dials for the speedometer and tachometer, and a centered digital information center.

Rear seat access is simply by jumping in with the roof down.

Above the display panel near the top of the dashboard are two additional dials for the oil pressure and temperature. Clean lines, an uncluttered center stack, and useful door pockets are features of note.

The standard cloth seats give way to leather on the Premium trim. Our model also had leather touches on the steering wheel, center stack, and the armrest. Yes, Ford even utilizes carbon fiber or something that looks just like it at the top of the console.

Tech

A base Mustang has a 4.2-inch display screen, Ford’s standard SYNC infotainment system, two USB ports, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a six-speaker audio system. That’s the standard package with a screen that’s a bit too small for our tastes.

Happily, there are upgrades available, thanks to the Premium Package that’s available with both engine choices. Here, you’ll find an 8-inch touch-screen display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, satellite radio, and an impressive 1,000-watt B&O Play audio system. Among the options available are a navigation system and a digital instrument cluster.

Offered standard for this year is FordPass Connect. The way this works is through a smartphone app, where you can remotely locate, start, lock and unlock the car, as well as check fuel levels and mileage. Remote start is standard with models equipped with the automatic transmission, but it isn’t available with the manual transmission.

A digital instrument is optional, but most models have the traditional display.

Safety

Sport coupes are typically behind other models in terms of safety features That’s one of the trade-offs for choosing performance first.

But the Ford Mustang does offer several driver-assist features, although they’re not standard – you’ll have to pay to get them. Among the available features are active lane control, driver attention alerts, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking.

In crash testing, the Ford Mustang performs relatively well, with the IIHS assigning the coupe with its top scores in most categories, except for an acceptable score in the small overlap front: driver-side test. Not all tests are conducted on the convertible.

Performance

A Ford Mustang with a four-cylinder engine? Seriously? We haven’t seen one since the 1990s, what was then a 2.3-liter motor powering the Mustang SVO. That engine has an output of up to 205 horsepower, depending on the year.

Beginning in 2015, the Mustang gained an all-new turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four, joining a 3.7-liter V6 and a 5.0-liter V8 as the middle entry in a three-engine lineup. Beginning in 2018, only the turbo and V8 engines remained as Ford dropped the V6. Like the V8, the turbo works with either a standard 6-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmission.

What’s important to know about the base engine is that it is no slacker. Indeed, the naturally aspirated V6 produces 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. That’s not too shabby for a V6. But the inline-four had the power edge and that’s why it was an engine upgrade.

The Mustang’s top drops down in about 10 seconds and
neatly folds itself behind the rear seat.

As before, the turbo four produces 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of twist. Further, a high-performance version as supplied in my test model swelled its output to 330 hp. That equals the top-end of the performance spectrum for today’s most powerful V6 engines.

The other choice is, of course, a 5.0-liter V8 engine. Here, this one has long served as the performance mainstay for the Mustang, a naturally aspirated motor that currently develops 460/480 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. Robust numbers, indeed!

As for the engine at hand, it rises to the occasion. Our test model had the dual exhaust with four tips, which purred and bellowed as the RPMs rose and fell. It offers quick off-the-mark acceleration and sufficient passing power. With the six-speed gearbox to play with, the gear movements came easy and clean. Turbo lag was imperceptible; it might be noticeable with the automatic, but I didn’t find it that way with the manual.

Typically, about once each year a Mustang shows up in my test fleet. As the first four-banger Mustang I’ve ever driven, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Besides its laudable performance characteristics, this pony car supplies wonderfully weighted steering, spot-on handling, and imparts much fun on twisty roads and while pulling out of corners. The Mustang seems like a throwback to another era when cars were fast, fun to drive, and not crossovers. Sadly, the Mustang represents a dying breed of car styling – we hope Ford has the presence of mind to keep this vehicle alive in both hardtop and convertible configurations.

Competitive Set

The Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro are the two closest competitors to the Ford Mustang. Only the Camaro offers a convertible. Like the Mustang, the Camaro has a small rear seat. However, the Challenger is the space leader of the three, as it can easily hold four adults.

Other models to consider include the Nissan 370Z and the Toyota GR Supra. If you don’t mind four doors, then the Dodge Charger and Kia Stinger are worthy competitors as well.

Sequential turn signal lights are quad tip exhausts give this Mustang its verve.

Our Recommendation

Should you choose a turbo four or naturally aspirated V8? That’s the choice before you. We know enthusiasts will gravitate to the latter, which begs for further upgrades including various performance packages ($5,195 or $6,500). These include summer tires, Brembo brakes, an enhanced damping system, track-inspired features, gauge pack, and other performance enhancements.

We can, however, recommend the base engine configuration for anyone who doesn’t place performance above everything else. Certainly, by starting at the Premium trim you’ll have many of the features you’ll probably want in America’s pony car.

Premium Utility: 2020 Mazda CX-30

March 17, 2020 by admin 5 Comments

This 2020 CX-30 slots between the CX-3 and CX-5, and is one of four Mazda utility vehicles.

Utility vehicles are not the utilitarian conveyances they once were with nondescript front fascias, slab sides, and dreary interiors. These days, customers can find several models that incorporate car styling cues, while remaining faithful to their mission.

2020 Mazda CX-30 Review

The 2020 Mazda CX-30, which is an all-new model, is an excellent example of a vehicle that’s handsome, practical, and worth exploring. Mazda offers the 2020 CX30 from $23,000, including a $1,100 destination charge.

Instead of offering trims, the CX-30 comes with packages: Select ($25,000), Preferred ($27,300), and Premium ($29,300); each package builds on the previous one. You’ll find standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive, the latter a $1,400 option.

Exterior

How does Mazda make its vehicles so beautiful? It starts with a leading-edge design philosophy, known as KODO or “soul of motion.” What this represents is a fluidic canvas marked by flowing lines, sweeping curves, and tight corners.

In particular, the CX-30’s front fascia features a gaping maw, slim headlamps, and a narrow lower intake. In other words, it has a sportscar persona upfront. From the rear, the little Mazda offers round taillamps within wing-like rear lights. Carefully placed curves supply the liftgate with distinction that’s almost haunch-like at first glance.

Chiseled looks and a sportscar stance mark this Mazda.

Mazda outfits the CX-30 with standard LED headlights and daytime running lights, 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, and power-controlled side mirrors. With the Select Package, the upgrades include 18-inch wheels and keyless entry.

Choose the Preferred Package and Mazda adds a shark fin antenna and exterior embellishments, including a front grille highlighted by gloss finish. With the top-level Premium Package, Mazda includes enhanced LED lighting, adaptive front lights, roof rails, a power-sliding moonroof, and a rear power liftgate.

Interior

Automakers have gone to great strides to make the interiors of even basic models look more lavish than before. Still, with nearly every model you’ll find an abundance of soft-touch materials, plastics, and brightwork trim. That’s no surprise as small budgets require basic materials.

The Mazda CX-30 offers its share of soft materials and cloth-trimmed seats, but immediately pivots beginning with the first package. Specifically, that package adds imitation leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a rear-seat armrest with center console and two cup holders.

Opt for the Preferred Package and an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, heated front seats, and an overhead console with sunglasses holder comes in. But it is with Premium Package where Mazda turns on the luxury spigot, which flows forth with perforated leather-trimmed seats and a leather-wrapped dashboard, the latter unheard of in this class.

The CX-30’s cabin is comfortable and small. The best seats are upfront. Indeed, for some people, the only seats are upfront as the rear compartment is quite confining for adults. A lack of meaningful legroom means the rear compartment is most suitable for two children in booster seats or pre-teens. That said, we think the CX-30 appeals mostly to solo drivers or couples, people who value flair, distinction, and premium features within a small frame.

Tech

Mazda’s tech is a curious affair with its handsome 8.8-inch display panel. Oddly, it isn’t a touch-screen system. Instead, it is controlled by a dial, much like BMW. Bluetooth, HD Radio, two USB ports, and an 8-speaker audio system are standard.

To obtain smartphone compatibility – Android Auto and Apple CarPlay – you have to opt for the Select Package. That’s one of the few oddities of this Mazda as both are generally supplied as standard equipment in competing models. Satellite radio doesn’t appear until the Preferred Package, which includes a 12-speaker Bose audio system. Choose the Preferred Package and a head-up display is included.

Certainly, if you value specific features, you may find yourself opting for packages you’d otherwise prefer not to purchase.

Fully optioned, the leather interior matches some luxury models.

Safety

Beyond the requisite suite of airbags and rearview camera, the CX-30 comes with lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic braking, and adaptive cruise control with full stop and go. Blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross traffic alert is included with the Select Package.

The CX-30’s safety bundle is what you’d expect with most any new vehicle these days. The one feature not available is semi-autonomous driving, which essentially drives the car while your hands remain on the wheel.

The IIHS awarded the 2020 CX-30 with its Top Safety Pick award. We’re awaiting a crash-test rating from the NHTSA. To sum up, the CX-30’s safety features and ratings are where we’d expect this model to be.

Performance

The CX-30 comes with a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available. With an output of 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, this engine finds a middle ground between efficiency and performance.

Indeed, it is the same engine used in several other Mazda products, including the Mazda6 sedan and the Mazda CX-5 crossover. In the CX-30, it seems especially strong, thanks to this vehicle’s smaller footprint and lighter weight than larger Mazda models.

Under full throttle, the powertrain leaps into action, by delivering copious amounts of power. It’s steady off the start and quickly picks up speed when required. The transmission works unobtrusively in the background, serving up gears without drama. Switch to sport mode and the gear shifting stretches out, holding on longer than what seems necessary, but that’s a Mazda attribute.

The CX-30 crosses a one-lane bridge in Moore County, NC.

The CX-30 shares much of its running gear with the highly desirable Mazda3. Mazda utilizes shocks and springs up front with springs and a Torsen bar in the rear. Even with its higher profile, the CX-30 manages curves and corners with relative ease. It is about as performance-oriented a crossover you’ll find in this class or with anything else on tap. Spot-on steering and engaging handling make this small Mazda a fun drive, although not quite to the level of the Mazda3.

Lastly, this crossover isn’t designed for anything more than light off-road duty when equipped with all-wheel drive. It has nearly 8 inches of ground clearance, but it doesn’t come with the under armor protection and low transmission gearing required to pull this vehicle out of tough spots.

Competitive Set

The CX-30 slots between the CX-3 and CX-5 within Mazda’s four-model utility line. The CX-9 is the brand’s fourth crossover model. The CX-30 name seems odd, but there is a reason for it: CX-4 is used in China by another manufacturer.

Among the competing models in this class are the Honda HR-V, Subaru Crosstrek, and the Nissan Rogue Sport. We also think shoppers of small luxury crossovers might consider the CX-30, especially when the Mazda comes fully loaded. In this case, the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz CLS are models to compare.

Our Recommendation

Choose a CX-30 with at least the Select Package and you’ll enjoy many of the features in a small crossover for under $25,000. We recommend all-wheel drive if you live in a snowy climate, otherwise, the standard front-wheel-drive layout is sufficient.

In all, the Mazda CX-30 is a great product in a highly competitive segment. Quite simply, it underscores why Mazda is a premium player in the mainstream market, with a modest boost in standard pricing over other models.

This all-wheel-drive CX-30 manages gravel roads just fine.

At a Glance: 2021 Ford E Series Cutaway

March 12, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

This Ford E Series is ready for upfitting.

Ever since the Ford Transit van landed on our shores in 2015, this European model has supplanted America’s best-known full-size model, the Ford E-Series. Launched in the early 1960s, the E-Series (also known as the Econoline) was long offered in consumer and commercial configurations. Although the Transit took its place, the E Series is still available as a cutaway model for recreational and commercial customers.

What is a Cutaway?

A cutaway model is a vehicle with a cab and a chassis. The passenger compartment is not included as the bare chassis is offered for upfitting purposes, such as configuring for a work truck, ambulance, an RV or other vehicle. In effect, you no longer have a van, rather the base vehicle forms the backbone for a commercial truck.

When the Transit arrived, Ford had no plans to discontinue the E Series, at least for the short term. As time passed, demand for the chassis has remained strong enough to keep it around. Notably, Ford hasn’t allowed this model to stay stagnant as it developed a new engine to power the vehicles. We’ll take a look at what this means.

1. Single or dual rear wheels.

You’ll find a full frame with the E Series with your choice of single or dual rear wheels. The standard E-350 single-rear-wheel configuration covers most recreational and commercial needs. The E-350 dual-rear-wheel arrangement increases towing capacity and payload. The top-of-the-line E-450 dual-rear-wheel cutaway is especially suited for towing heavy loads.

2. A powerful and large V8.

The Ford Motor Company developed an all-new V8 gasoline engine for its commercial applications and the E Series is one of the beneficiaries of this. This engine displaces 7.3 liters and works with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine is available in two performance levels. The first one produces 350 horsepower and 468 pound-feet of torque. The second one outputs 300 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque. The first choice maximizes performance; the second choice emphasizes efficiency.

3. Redesigned instrument panel.

This Ford’s instrument panel is fully redesigned for 2021. It features a new cluster and finish panel, Bluetooth Radio, and dual USB ports. A tilt-and-telescopic steering column is included. Available Ford Telematics and Ford Data Services supply security, third-party access, and partner integration.

4. Available driver-assist features.

The E Series offers many driver-assist safety features that are also found in other Ford products. This is good news for cstomers wanting the benefits offered elsewhere. These features include: adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, post-collision braking, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlamps, distance alert, and automatic emergency braking. You can add these features to the standard hill start assist, traction control, and electronic stability control.

The Ford E Series

When shopping for an E Series, look for a Ford dealer that’s also a “commercial vehicle center.” This means the operator is certified by Ford to sell and service commercial vehicles serving class 1-7 work vehicles. You’ll find more than 650 such dealers nationwide, with each trained to offer commercial solutions, fleet care, upfitting guidance, and credit options.
