The Ford Motor Company has added yet another vehicle to its police pursuit vehicle arsenal. The 2018 Ford F-150 Police Responder joins existing sedan, hybrid sedan, and utility vehicle models to give law enforcement a new tool for their consideration. The latest model is capable of speeds of up to 100 mph. Moreover and importantly, it is also wholly suited for off road use, enabling personnel to conduct chases across the toughest terrain.

2018 Ford F-150 Police InterceptorFord claims that its special F-150 is the first pursuit-rated pickup truck; this one derived from the F-150 FX4 off-road model. Powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbo (EcoBoost) V6 engine making 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, the police truck comes paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

This SuperCrew (crew cab) truck sits on a 145-inch wheelbase based on a high-strength steel frame and features Ford’s high-strength, military-grade, aluminum-alloy body. Besides being the most powerful pursuit vehicle available, the F-150 Police Responder also claims the largest passenger volume, payload and towing capacity of any pursuit-rated police vehicle. Further, the truck has best-in-class front and rear shoulder and hip room, as well as rear legroom.

“Ford’s 2018 F-150 Police Responder is the perfect all-terrain law enforcement vehicle,” said Stephen Tyler, Ford’s police brand marketing manager. “Aside from its industry-first on-road pursuit capability, this purpose-built pickup can comfortably seat five, while providing capability in off-road patrol situations for officers in rural environments patrolled by sheriff’s departments, border patrol operations and the Department of Natural Resources.”

Performance Enhancements for Law Enforcement

Pursuit vehicles are always equipped with law-enforcement-specific equipment and the F-150 Police Responder does not disappoint. For starters, a number of performance enhancements, such as a police-calibrated braking system with upgraded calipers and pad friction material, come standard. Also, each model has a modified front stabilizer bar for improved braking and handling, as well as 18-inch alloy wheels set within all-terrain tires.

2018 Ford F-150 Police InterceptorThe interior is upfit-ready and comes with a column shifter with center-seat delete, heavy-duty cloth front seats (with light bolstering and anti-stab plates), vinyl rear seats, and heavy-duty vinyl flooring — the better for washing out perp vomit, mud, blood, excrement, and other bodily discharges.

The truck comes equipped with a high-output 240-amp alternator for supporting on-board electrical devices, as well as a police-calibrated speedometer, and engine hour and engine idle hour meters. All models have underbody skid plates to protect the truck from curbs and rough terrain. Each truck also has a standard class IV hitch, what supplies the F-150 Police Responder with a best-in-class towing capability of 7,000 pounds.

Besides the three other police responder models, Ford offers a Special Service F-150 and Expedition, a Special Service Police Sedan and even a Transit Prisoner Transport Vehicle.

Looking Ahead

Ford’s pursuit vehicle fold now numbers four, but the status of its Taurus-based Police Interceptor Sedan is in question. Through August, Ford sold just 4,824 copies (down 12.8 percent) to 19,856 Explorer-based Police Interceptor Utility models (up 2.6 percent). Sales of the hybrid sedan have yet to start.

With the P.I. Utility model possessing a 4-to-1 demand edge, production of the P.I. Sedan might cease. Further, the Taurus itself is now its ninth year with no plans announced for its replacement. An all-new model has arrived in China, but it isn’t likely here. Besides, that model shares its platform with the newly released Continental.

Auto Trends expects the Taurus to have about one year of life left before it is finally canceled. That leaves three other Ford pursuit vehicle models for law enforcement come 2019. That said, if strong demand for the F-150 Police Responder follows, then additional models based on the upcoming Ranger (midsize pickup truck) and Bronco (SUV) might prove tenable for Ford.

Ford’s F-Series rolled out in 1948 and over the past 40 years, it has been the top-selling pickup truck nameplate in the world. The F-100 followed the initial F-1 and then the F-150 along with F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 models were woven in.

Although most F-Series models sold are F-150s, Ford’s F-250 through F-550 lines are in demand — prized by families, outdoorsmen, and fleet buyers alike. Beginning in 1999, Ford began marketing the four F-250 and greater sub-models under the “Super Duty” umbrella to distinguish these from the F-150.

Other defining characteristics of every Super Duty model is an oversized grille, gas and diesel V8 engines (a V10 gas engine is also available in some grades), a heavy-duty chassis, upgraded suspensions, an optional locking rear differential, and an available dual-rear-wheel (dually) configuration. F-250 and F-250 models are available in regular, double and crew cab arrangements; the F-450 is a crew cab-only dually, while the F-550 comes as a chassis cab dually only.

The pickup truck world is aware that Ford released the current-generation F-150 in 2015, then waited the customary two years for the Super Duty’s release. Both models feature steel frames and aluminum-intensive bodies, the latter a first for a pickup truck.

Driven: 2017 Ford F-350 Super Duty

A 2017 Ford F-350 Platinum Super Duty Crew Cab 4WD model found its way to me and as I always do, I put my pickup trucks through the paces. But with one caveat: without the benefit of having something to tow, that’s one area I wasn’t able to review. Nonetheless, I’m very familiar with the extraordinary towing power of heavy-duty pickup trucks and have towed with them at manufacturer-sponsored media previews.

And towing is the big draw of the Super Duty as it offers a 21,000-pound standard trailering capacity — better than the Ram 3500 and the Chevrolet Silverado HD. But the towing limit doesn’t stop there — you get 27,500 pounds for fifth-wheel towing and 32,500 for the gooseneck. With fifth-wheel the installed coupling is in the truck’s bed, while the gooseneck utilizes a ball hitch in the bed.

Keep in mind these numbers are for F350 diesel with a dual rear axle. Check out the numbers in the chart for my test model — they’re significantly less, but still noteworthy.

Add in upwards of 7,630 of payload capacity (cabin + bed weight) and you have an amazingly robust piece of equipment on your hands.

An All-New Super Duty

We already touched on the key differences between F-150 and Super Duty models. So, what are the generational changes within the Super Duty line alone? In short: plenty.

The first three generations (1999-2016) represented incremental changes with the same frame used throughout, while the 2017 model is a full redesign from the ground up. This means Ford replaced nearly everything, although the two engine choices and the automatic transmission are the same as before.

The changes for the 2017 Super Duty are evident at first glance. What’s not apparent is this model’s weight loss — up to 350 pounds. At the same time, Ford claims the fully boxed frame is now 24 times stiffer than the previous model. That change has led to a noticeable boost in towing.

Optional, High-End Interior

Inside, the Super Duty seats as many as six, provided you choose the standard 40/20/40 front bench seat. My test model came with wide and supportive bucket seats with a gargantuan console located between the two. That console is ideal for storing hanging folders — too bad it isn’t cooled as it would be a great place to load up on cold ones. Relax, soda pop…that’s all.

Ford went to great lengths to give the Platinum edition its due recognition by adding chrome touches inside and out. But even before you jump in, the deployable running boards slide out. At first, I wasn’t especially thrilled by them, but I got used to having them on hand. Besides, they’re better than fixed boards if four-wheel driving is your thing — no worries that you’ll bend or break them as you navigate through every slough.

That said, the interior chrome touches aren’t what you think. Instead, Ford uses heavy-duty, chrome-look plastics throughout the cabin — vent surrounds, upper dashboard plating, center console surround, steering wheel inserts, and door handles. The “brushed” look gives the material a more premium appearance, but it is still plastic. Figure that cost and weight savings played into Ford’s decision here.

Leather is in abundance — covering the seats, dressing the dashboard, and wrapping the steering wheel. The door armrests and center console are leather-wrapped too. At one time it seemed strange to have trucks adorned with fine materials, but manufacturers are responding to customer demand. Chevrolet has its Country Cadillacs, so why not a Landscape Lincoln for Ford?

In-cabin storage is phenomenal and not just for the center console or the double glove box. The exterior of the center console offers a pair of open slots and you’ll find a covered storage compartment (with a sliding door) at the base of the stack with a pair of USB ports. An open storage area is adjacent to the front cup holders — two more cup holders are in the rear when pulling down the center armrest. Each comes with bottle holders and other storage compartments.

My test model offered heated and cooled multi-contoured front seats with a massaging function. Imagine after a hard day on site, getting in and having your rear and back massaged. Adjust the temperature accordingly and you have a real treat!

Under the Hood

A powerful frame and formidable looks are just two attributes of Super Duty models. The most significant difference between Super Duty and F-150, however, has everything to do with the engines.

The standard engine is a 6.2-liter gasoline V8 and that’s larger than the biggest engine you can get in a 2017 F-150. The Super Duty’s V8 makes 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, offering the most torque for a gas engine in this class.

But those numbers pale in comparison to what the 6.7-liter turbo-diesel V8 engine delivers: 440 horsepower and a whopping 925 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come paired with a heavy-duty, six-speed automatic transmission. No word whether Ford will soon offer the 10-speed automatic co-developed with GM and slated for the 2018 F-150.

And since I had the diesel, my drive focus was entirely on the oil burner and its prowess. Fill this baby with “go juice” and you’re in for some treats. The first treat is fuel mileage — I averaged about 16 mpg and that’s a decent number for a heavy-duty truck. The second treat is performance — the Super Duty is slow off the start, but once the turbo spools you’re taking this three-and-one-half ton beast down the highway at a robust clip.

Steering, Handling and Towing

There is a third treat, one you probably wouldn’t expect with a large pickup truck. And that’s in the steering and handling department thanks to the Super Duty’s new adaptive steering system for ease of maneuverability in tight spaces. Located in the truck’s steering wheel, the system continually adjusts the ratio between the driver’s steering wheel input and front tire rotation. The system utilizes an electric motor, a gear unit and a dedicated computer to control same. This means less arm flexing for the driver, offering improvements in maneuvering, parking, and towing over the previous model.

Since the majority of Super Duty buyers purchase one with towing in mind, Ford now makes it easy to hook up and pull. There are as many as seven cameras available to help you make that connection and to keep tabs on everything while you’re on the road. The trailering system, ported from the F-150, “remembers” up to 10 trailers for length, adjusting the blind spot monitors accordingly. At work here is a cab-mounted rear-facing camera with an overlaid guideline and an 180-degree front-facing camera that kicks in as you move forward.

The diesel also has an upgraded diesel engine-exhaust braking system. When engaged, it impedes the turbocharger’s exhaust flow to create backpressure, slowing the Super Duty for enhanced control while going downhill. A much-desired side benefit is a reduction in brake fade and lining, lowering your maintenance costs accordingly.

Overall, the Super Duty offers a comfortable ride on roads. I limited my off-road excursions to gravel and unpaved roads, with the occasional mud puddle traversed. If you want bigly pickup truck off-roading, I suggest you procure a Ford F-150 Raptor. The Raptor is purpose-built for Baja thrills, while the Super Duty 4WD covers everything below that level.

Parting Thoughts

Must you pay $78,000 (or more) to purchase a Super Duty? No, not unless you want to.

Certainly, Ford pushes the loaded and gilded models the most, but if your aspirations are more down to earth, you’ll find an F-250 Super Duty XL 2WD featuring a regular cab and an eight-foot bed for $33,080, including destination. Upgrading to the available diesel engine at this price point brings your base cost to $41,875. Then add $3,050 for a crew cab. If your aspirations include four-wheel drive, your price climbs to $47,725. Happily, you will pay just an extra $205 if you opt for the extended wheelbase model, adding 16 inches to the standard 160-inch length.

So, figure a cost of $50,000 for a standard Super Duty before incentives kick in. That’s a lot less than my test model, but it also means foregoing the many amenities of the Platinum model.

If you have a dually on your mind, the base F-450 XL comes with the turbodiesel only and includes a crew cab and four-wheel drive. Add in a package upgrade along with gooseneck trailering and your price tops $82,000.

For shoppers already sold on the Super Duty, Ford’s price configurator allows you to cobble together the model you want. But keep in mind that dealer lots are heavily skewed towards well-equipped models and that’s the direction you’ll take unless you hold your ground.

Crawl Control: Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

The third-generation Toyota Tacoma is the best one yet, although admittedly the footprint remains the same as before. What’s different is the sheet metal and interior, along with new technologies, including available crawl control.

Toyota supplied a TRD Pro, a four-wheel drive (4WD) model with excellent off-road credentials, as a recent test model. This wasn’t my first experience with a TRD — I’ve driven both the Sport and Off-Road grades. Indeed, in August 2015, Toyota hosted a media event near Tacoma, Washington, to showcase the all-new pickup. While there, journalists had ample opportunity to take the available 4WD models out on the roads and finally to the various off-road tracks and obstacles developed or set aside for our experience. As before, the 2017 Tacoma is available in extended (Access) and Double Cab configurations. You have a choice of four-cylinder and V6 engine models and standard rear-wheel drive (2WD) and available four-wheel drive (4WD). Six grades are available: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited and TRD Pro. FYI, the TRD stands for “Toyota Racing Development,” now comprising precisely half of all Tacoma grades.

For 2017, the TRD Pro is new — it was not offered for the 2016 model year, although it made a brief appearance late in the second-generation Tacoma’s history. Consider this the ultimate Tacoma, a vehicle based on the off-road racers that have long defined the brand. Once again, the TRD Pro covers three Toyota models — Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner.

Heritage and TRD Looks

The TRD Pro offers a distinctive look with its heritage-inspired “TOYOTA” front grille replacing the usual Toyota symbol. That’s a look common to the now discontinued FJ Cruiser, itself a heritage model.

You’ll also find a blacked-out hood scoop and graphic; power side mirrors with turn signal indicators; black over fenders; and color-keyed grille surround, door handles, and rear bumper. Just three color choices are available: White, Cement, and Barcelona Red Metallic. My test model was white.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. The TRD Pro features 16-inch TRD black alloy wheels set within Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires. You’ll also find a TRD Pro aluminum skid plate, TRD-tuned front springs with a one-inch lift, a TRD-tuned rear suspension with progressive-rate off-road leaf springs, projector beam headlights, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, and TRD Pro badging and trim embellishments. Included is a standard V6 tow package.

Your Double Cab Interior

The TRD Pro is a Double Cab-only model. That’s good news for anyone who wants to squeeze in a few extra folk in the back seat. Space back there is tight, but three can fit in a pinch. Just don’t look for generous leg room as you won’t find it. Three adults sitting side by side is a challenge too, so go with two.

Up front is where it’s at — there is plenty of room for the driver and passenger. Thus, it is doubtful that many people buy this truck for work crew or family. Instead, check out the full-size Toyota Tundra to meet those needs.

The TRD Pro features leather seats (with red double stitching). This may seem like a bit of a contradiction for people who love to off road, especially if you drag in dirt or clay from the outside.

Every model comes with a tilt and telescopic steering column, full power accessories, a 6.1-inch touch-screen display, a six-speaker audio system with a CD player, USB outlets and audio jacks, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, and a rearview camera. Also, you’ll find dual-zone climate control, a security system, four cup holders, and eight in-door drink holders.

The glove box features a two-tier interior — ideal for organizing the owner’s manual and other important documents. A large, open compartment at the base of the stack is ideal for holding a smartphone and connecting to the USB port immediately above.

Let’s Go Four-Wheel Driving!

Directly to the right of the ignition button is the drive controller. Naturally, it defaults to 2WD, but with a push of the switch, you’ll move to 4Hi or 4Lo. On top of the roof directly above the rear view mirror is the multi-terrain system (MTS) with crawl control.

Here, you’ll want to shift into neutral, then choose 4L before pressing MTS and dialing in the terrain settings to control wheel spin, what effectively adjusts the engine throttle and braking.

The Tacoma TRD Pro is a model that *wants* to go off road. I say this because its on-road manners are very much truck-like — “Taco” seems heavy, it picks up speed deliberately, and it has a wide turning radius.

2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD ProThese are the reasons why some people prefer car-based utility vehicles, exchanging off-road prowess for occasional light-duty travel on graveled roads or across the grass.

As for the TRD Pro, you’ll want to take this beast off road as soon as you can. This model delivers the best approach (35 degrees), break over (23.9), and departure (26) angles of any Tacoma, providing a much-desired edge for devotees.

In my area, there are a few places to take your off-roader without breaking the law. That said, my first off-road adventure involved a mud hole on unmarked property.

Once done, I headed back to the main road, where an approaching state trooper signaled me to stop. I rolled down my window, explaining we just turned around and were heading back to the main road (that was the truth, once we exited the mud). Fortuitously, my explanation satisfied the trooper. Perhaps having my wife riding shotgun demonstrated we were simply an ordinary couple out for a Sunday afternoon drive. We just happened upon a slough of mud.

But I was far from satisfied with that first experience, as it gave me little chance to use crawl control. Happily, my second voyage involved traveling for miles on clay and loose rock trails, where it seemed few people ventured and there was little chance I would get stuck or flagged down my police.

The prized feature, however, wasn’t the trails. Instead, it was a beautifully formed heap of clay with a steep incline, what encouraged a thorough testing of crawl control. Once engaged, I released my foot off the gas and brake pedals, allowing Taco to climb the hill with little steering involvement. It is on these steepest inclines where the mechanical clanking of crawl control is most noticeable. Slowly, but steadily she climbed before reaching the top, which was only about eight feet high.

I stopped the truck, got out, inspected the slope on the other side and decided *not* to attempt a forward descent. It turns out the front of the hill was so worn down that the angle was steeper than what I preferred to risk taking. Thoughts of ripping off a section of the grille or damaging the underside went through my mind, even when operated within the safe parameters of crawl control.

Instead, I kept crawl control active as I moved the transmission into reverse and began backing down the hill. That was actually quite a fun experience — the truck gradually moved backward, alternating between crawling and braking, but mostly braking. At 2-3 mph it certainly was a slow crawl, but a well-managed one at that. Once done, I continued my off-road romp, switching from 4Lo to 4Hi, reversing the process. Here, you need to stop and allow the process to complete before moving on.

Parting Thoughts

Of course, Toyota supplied me with a top-grade 4WD model costing nearly $45,000. Toyota added a few options, including a bed extender ($300), bed mat ($120), all-weather floor liners ($209), paint protection film ($395), and a TRD air filter ($90). Of the five, the bed extender may be the most useful.

In case you think the Tacoma is beyond your reach, the base 2WD S model retails for $24,320. The lowest cost 4WD is the SR Access Cab with a five-speed manual transmission ($25,845). Add $1,550 for the automatic transmission. You’re still looking at a four-cylinder engine, however.

If you have four-wheeling and a V6 in mind, then start your look with a TRD Sport Access Cab and the automatic transmission ($33,970). The Double Cab will cost you $935 more. To get such helpful features as a locking rear differential, hill start assist control, and crawl control, you’re looking at the TRD Off-Road starting around $35,000. Opt for the Double Cab and you’ll pay $36,000. And that’s before choosing such off-road embellishments as all-terrain tires.

Of course, some may find crawl control too gimmicky to justify the cost. I fully understand that argument. What it doesn’t change is that Taco maintains its credibility and market leadership in a strengthening segment. These two factors alone are main appeals with crawl control, a locking rear differential, and a GoPro mount serving as nice-to-have features.

GMC Sierra Denali: The Peak of Pickup Truck Living

Large trucks are as popular as ever and in the Sierra, GMC has one that may interest you. The Sierra Denali is the top trim level, bringing lots of exterior chrome, interior trim and leather, and the payload and trailering capacities that shoppers demand.

GMC Sierra DenaliPickup truck sales are booming and General Motors is well-positioned to meet that demand. It is the only company offering three full lines of pickup trucks — medium, full-size light-duty and heavy-duty models. And it does so under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands.

GMC has a certain cachet that attracts a smaller, but more profitable segment of the consumer market. And to that end a pinnacle “Denali” trim level is offered with all the chrome, glitz and leather that allows GMC to assume the “luxury” mantle with these particular models.

The GMC Sierra is the full-size pickup truck and a Denali 1500 4WD Crew Cab was a recent weekly visitor. It was the second go round of the model year for this type of truck, with an up level 2500 the previous test subject. No matter, when the press fleet distributor brings them, then I will test whatever is in my driveway. And this time I took said subject off road — briefly — but just long enough for me to see how it performed in muck, mire, slough and so forth. More about that sodden experience later.

The standard Sierra is powered by a 4.3-liter V-6 engine making 285 horsepower and 305 foot-pounds of torque. Engine choice number two of three is a 5.3-liter V-8 engine rated at 355 horsepower and 383 foot-pounds of torque. Your third choice is a colossal 6.2-liter V-8 engine making 420 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque. The two smaller engines are paired with a six-speed automatic; the larger engine gets an eight-speed automatic. As tested, the Denali came with choice number three.

Trucks of the Sierra Denali’s proportions seem imposing. And they are. The longest model, when equipped with a 6-foot-6-inches bed, is nearly 20 feet in length. Moreover, it spans more than 7 feet across with its mirrors and is just over six feet tall. That these models take up significant road space is a given. That they are also a bear to park in today’s smaller parking spaces may not be entirely grasped until you are driving one.

Redesign Ahead of Ford

GM redesigned the GMC Sierra and its Chevrolet Silverado twin for the 2014 model year. That changeover preceded the much anticipated next generation Ford F-150, now sporting an aluminum body. Despite whatever edge Ford claims with the lighter material, the fuel economy differences are negligible — no more than 2 mpg between models. Furthermore, loyal buyers continue to flood GMC showrooms and are now considering the smaller Canyon too. Notably, the Canyon has not poached Sierra sales as GMC truck sales are up across the board. Certainly, you can thank $2.50 per gallon gasoline for that trend.

All Sierra pickup trucks are marked by a massive grille, a long hood, strong shoulders, a slab side and a pickup truck bed. Indeed, there is not much to distinguish these models until you opt for various upgrades. Oh, yes, the side CornerSteps on the rear bumper are a welcome way to access the truck bed.

Choose a Denali edition and you get chrome touches on the upper grille, the lower grille, the door handles, on the side mirrors, around the windows, and along the lower part of the doors. And if that isn’t enough, you get 20-inch ultra bright machined aluminum wheels. If bling isn’t your thing, then the Denali isn’t for you. Or pay for a customized blacked-out appearance package after the fact to rid yourself of at least some of the bedecked trappings.

Cavernous and Well-Appointed Interior

Inside, the GMC Sierra offers no compromise room for five. Not only that, but if you are a crew-centric commercial account, then you can swap the front bucket seats with a bench seat to gain a sixth spot. In doing so you lose the substantial and cavernous storage compartment splitting the front seats. But you do gain locking under-seat storage on SLE editions with the front bench seating.

All seating positions are very comfortable in the Sierra Denali. Specifically, GMC adds “dual-density seat foam” that holds its shape longer in a bid to maintain comfort. And the big guys sitting in the front bucket seats have all the room they need with generous amounts of head, shoulder, hip and leg room. To be sure, only the full size pickup trucks presents a suitable driving experience for the tallest people among us.

Everything about the Sierra Denali seems large because it is. The instrument panel is upgraded from the standard Denali, with standard models featuring a six-analog display with tachometer and speedometer readouts dominating. Four smaller displays are at the top of the panel with a digital driver’s information center below these.

GMC Sierra DenaliHowever, in the Denali, you have two capacious analog read outs surrounding a digitalized compass and speedometer. Attached to either side of that center dial are oil pressure and fuel gauges.

To the left of the steering wheel are the 4WD controls for four-wheel drive models. On the steerage wheel itself are the cruise and secondary audio controls. That steering column tilts and telescopes to allow you to find the ideal comfort position. With top-of-the-line models, memory settings allow you to save your seating position.

One of my personal favorite designs for the Sierra Denali is its center stack. In fact, it is easy to comprehend and use, starting with the color display. That display features smartphone-like apps to gain additional information about navigation, climate control, audio and more. Beneath that are switches and dials for operating the audio system, climate control and a melange of other driver features.

At the base of the center stack — at least in the Sierra Denali — is a dream formation of multiple USB ports, a 12-volt outlet, an auxiliary input port and a 110-volt outlet. Truly, the connectivity aspect along with the downreaching storage compartment suitable for hanging folders makes the Sierra Denali an office on wheels. Not to mention the 4G LTE feature that brings in WiFi for Internet access.

All Sierra models come with a complete infotainment package, including an audio system. However, in the Denali you get a 7-speaker Bose audio system with subwoofer.

Storage and More

The Denali features multiple in-cabin storage areas. For example, you get an oversized two-tier glove box, and a storage well between the seats located just before the two cup holders, in door storage holders with drink holders, and an overhead console. Speaking about overhead, the Sierra Denali also has a sunroof.

In many vehicles, the rear seating passengers may feel cheated. But not so with the Sierra Denali. For instance, if you were to place three large men side-by-side in the back seat, there is enough head, shoulder, hip and leg room to go around. With two people in the back, the center position converts to an oversized armrest and cup holder.

On or Off the Road

Take to the road and the Sierra Denali has copious amounts of energy at the ready. From out of the gate and on to the highway, you have every bit of power at your disposal. The transmission shifts with confidence through each gear, although in the upper gears there were times it seemed to “hunt” or hesitate for the next gear.

Off-roading is one feature of the Sierra Denali 4×4 that should be attempted to be fully appreciated. It may seem a bit of an oddity to some that such a “pretty” truck should do off-road duty, but it does so without drama. Don’t mistake its visage for being anything less than a beastly workhorse.

One of my favorite places to take a 4×4 is a clay bog about 20 miles from my home. At first glance, the morass leading to a hunting club’s entrance seems nothing more than a puddle. But if you do not come properly equipped, you will discover that the moor quickly becomes a quagmire. It is also the perfect place to test out your 4×4 system.

A certain section of that morass is especially muddy. Thus, switching from 4×4 high to low may be necessary, especially if your tires are more of the on-road variety. Not once was I stuck, although I kicked up enough red, oozy mud to make it appear as if I did engage in an all-day 4×4 affair. In the event that you do get stuck, the Sierra Denali has a pair of tow hooks up front for your extrication.

People may shop for a Sierra Denali for its large cabin, high-end amenities and its ton-plus payload capacity, but trailering may be the overarching factor for some. To enumerate, minimum towing for the 4×2 model is 5,500 pounds. But with the trailering package included, your towing capacity leaps to a robustious 12,000 pounds. However, the 4×4 edition offers minimum towing of 7,100 pounds and tops out at 11,900 pounds. As you can see the Sierra Denali offers a complete package that seems to satiate the desires of many.

If you find the Sierra too big of a package for your needs, then take heart as there is a Canyon model with Denali trim that can meet your needs. Either way, you have access to trucks that deliver what owners insist on in a variety of sizes and trim levels.

SUV Aspirations: 2015 GMC Yukon XL

Oversized sport utility vehicles seem like a throwback to a different era for some. For those who own them or aspire to acquire one, these models deliver the best amalgamation of passenger room and trailering capabilities in the business. Fuel costs can be exorbitant, but with the prevailing price of gasoline dropping below $2 per gallon in most states, the appeal for such vehicles has increased once again.

The GMC Yukon is a full-size, traditional rear-wheel drive SUV, available in four-wheel-drive, standard and stretched (XL) wheelbases as well as in Denali trim. Consequently, shoppers have much to scrutinize when considering the Yukon line, a model that competes with the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada.

GMC prices the base 2015 Yukon from $46,990, the Yukon XL from $49,690, the Yukon Denali from $63,770 and the Yukon XL Denali from $66,470. Choose four-wheel drive and you will add $3,000 to your base price. Notably, a fully-equipped stretched wheelbase Denali model can cost you more than $75,000.

For test purposes GMC delivered a Yukon XL 2WD SLT edition priced from $54,735 and equipped with the standard 5.3-liter V-8 engine making 355 horsepower and 383 foot-pounds of torque. Alternatively, a 6.2-liter V-8 engine making 420 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque is available and is also the standard engine found in the top-of-the-line Denali trim level. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, but Denali models get GM’s new eight-speed automatic.

Fully redesigned for 2015, the current Yukon/Yukon Denali offers a familiar silhouette with a refreshed grille, new headlamps and LED lights, redesigned inlaid doors for improved aerodynamics, a modern family of wheels, laminated windshield and front door glass to boost quietness, and a standard rear spoiler. As always, the GMC Yukon is built on the same truck platform that underpins GM’s big pickup trucks, including the GMC Sierra.

Quiet Cabin, Updated Interior

Inside, seating is for seven to nine people. The ideal arrangement may be two bucket seats up front, a pair of captain’s chairs in the second row and a third row bench seat. To offer room for nine, the second and third row seats are replaced with bench seats, but at a significant loss of storage space up front. The test model was a seven-seat SUV, what fully accentuates the cavernous interior.

The Yukon’s interior is dominated by an expansive dashboard, covered in soft touch materials and accented by French seam stitching. Excellent interior lighting, including ambient lighting, chases darkness away from every nook and crevice. All seats are firm and supportive, although third-row thigh support isn’t as good as you would find elsewhere.

GMC offers a long list of standard equipment with the Yukon. All models are equipped with a Bose audio system. An 8-inch color touch screen dominates the center console and provides voice commands, SiriusXM and HD radio, USB ports, auxiliary jacks, an SD card slot, Bluetooth streaming and hands-free calling. You also get tri-zone climate control, power accessories, cruise control, OnStar directions and connections, a 110-volt power outlet, a leather-wrapped tilt and telescope steering column and floor mats.

Move up to the SLT edition from the SLE and this model brings in improved interior lighting, heated and cooled front seats, heated outboard second row seats and a power folding 60-40 split bench seat. As for the Denali edition, this model brings in active noise cancellation technology, a customizable driver display and leather nearly everywhere. Available options include: an enhanced security package, an open road package with a power sunroof and navigation, a rear-seat Blu-Ray/DVD entertainment system, a head-up display and a number of dealer-installed accessories such as a reflective window shade.

The SLE edition provides premium cloth covered seats with leather seats found in SLE and Denali editions. Not surprisingly, the 10-way power driver’s seat places the emphasis on comfort, offering power recline, 2-way power lumbar control and even a 6-way power cushion. That seat plus the adjustable steering column provides scores of positioning permutations to rebuff driver fatigue. Similarly, the front passenger is also spoiled with a thoroughly comfortable seat.

Think hard before you consider swapping out the front bucket seats for a bench seat. Unless you know that you must have room for nine, the added seating space also means that the cavernous storage compartment and console between the front seats will be eliminated. Certainly, there are many other storage areas found in this model — the glove box, seat backs, the doors and behind the rear seat — but chances are you will find the bench arrangement wanting.

On the Road

With no boat, camper or trailer to pull, I cannot comment on the Yukon’s towing capabilities. What I can tell you is that this model is rated to pull from 7,900 pounds (Yukon XL Denali 4WD) to 8,500 pounds (Yukon 2WD) and has a payload capacity that starts around 1,500 pounds and tops out at 1,676 pounds.

To put it another way, you can bring with you a full contingent of people, load up the rear storage area and pull that big boat without much effort. I’m basing my perspective strictly on anecdotal evidence, observing the many SUVs in my area that carry a full load and seem none the worse for it.

Get behind the wheel of any Yukon and you’ll sense that you have full command of the road. In many ways you do as ground clearance, its large tires and the SUV’s overall height make for one imposing model.

What I think will interest most shoppers is the difference between the two V-8 engines. Both provide generous amounts of power, but you will enjoy a near 20 percent boost in power by choosing the larger engine. I can see where that power would come in handy when pulling anything up a hill or even retrieving a large boat from the water.

The Yukon XL extends the standard wheelbase from 116 inches to 130 inches and overall length from 203.9 inches to 224 inches. That’s a different approach then, let’s say the Ford Expedition, where the extra space is consigned strictly behind the third row seat.

The XL’s extended proportions also means this model seems to float down the road. It handles well and makes U-turns without needing a third opposite flowing lane to make that maneuver. Involved driving? You won’t find it. Consume potholes with relative ease? The GMC Yukon does that. For the best suspension you’ll need to upgrade to the Denali as it comes outfitted with magnetic ride control, a suspension system used in the Corvette Stingray, Cadillac CTS and other premium GM vehicles.

The Yukon’s braking system is composed of power-assisted, four-wheel disc, four-wheel anti-lock brakes using “Duralife” rotors and vented front and back. Standard and available safety features include: a front center airbag, radar-controlled cruise control, side blind zone alert, lane departure warning and automatic crash response.

Parting Thoughts

So how much does it cost to fill the tank of a GMC Yukon? Believe it or not, that’s a question that I often get from people that are considering a large SUV. Outfitted with a 31-gallon fuel tank, fill ups would have cost you well over $100 when the price of the regular grade gasoline it takes came in at $4 per gallon. Likewise, you will pay about $65 per fill up for a vehicle (as of this date) that averages 20 mpg under optimum driving conditions.

It is doubtful that gasoline prices will stay down for the long term, so keep that cost in mind when shopping for any large SUV. Moreover, you should expect to pay about $60,000 for a well-equipped standard wheelbase model outfitted with four-wheel drive and many of the amenities mentioned herein.

Off-Road Fun With a Toyota FJ Cruiser Ultimate

Toyota is saying “good-bye” to its FJ Cruiser in a big way. To mark the end of this utility vehicle’s 8-year model run, it launched a special “Ultimate” edition in Jan. Instead of the usual solid color body with a white roof, this edition features a white grille and Heritage Blue paint, a look that pays tribute to the FJ40 from which the FJ Cruiser’s design is based.

Just 2,500 units of this special edition model have been built. One copy found its way to me recently, giving me the opportunity to experience everything it offers, especially its off-road prowess.

One and Done Model

But first some background information regarding the model at hand. When Toyota released the FJ Cruiser for the 2007 model year, it said that it would be a “one and done” model. In other words, Toyota promised that it would build the FJ Cruiser for just one generation, then end production.

That generation lasted about as long as Toyota dared to keep this model around with the automaker confirming last fall that production would end following the close of the 2014 model year. The timing was just right too as its platform-mate, the Toyota 4Runner, had just made its own generational shift. Toyota wasn’t about to invest in a new model and break its promise, nor was it going to extend production of the older model at the expense of the 4Runner.

The FJ Cruiser, along with the 4Runner, the Nissan XTerra and the Jeep Wrangler are among the last body-on-frame utility vehicles on the market. These truck-based platforms are more rugged, less refined, but can handle an assortment of off-road conditions that today’s crossover sport utility vehicles would find difficult to do. Sure, there are models such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee that are designed to take a beating, but if you are a hardcore 44 person, it is the traditional SUVs that offer the best design.

The 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser is priced from $27,680 for the standard 42 (rear-wheel drive) edition. The 44 MT, equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, retails from $28,860. Choose the 44 AT ($29,270) and that comes equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. If your heart is set on the Ultimate package you will pay an $8,185 price premium for the many goodies offered. When all was said and done, my test model came in at $39,494, including an $815 delivery fee.

Among utility vehicles, the FJ Cruiser won’t easily be confused with other models on the road, although my wife kept referring to it as a “Jeep.” Indeed, this model’s closest competitor is the Jeep Wrangler, itself drawing on a rich legacy that extends back to the early 1940s. Toyota, for its part, has long built a Jeep-like vehicle as it was first commissioned by the US Army in 1950 to build 100 copies based on Willys’ specifications. Known as the Jeep BJ (Toyota Jeep, that was before the Jeep name was trademarked and likely has led to some of the confusion that remains even to this day. The BJ later became the Land Cruiser, with Toyota also adding the smaller FJ.

Like the 4Runner, the exclusive engine for the FJ Cruiser is a 4.0-liter, 24-valve V-6 making 260 horsepower and 271 foot-pounds of torque. Toyota did not make any engine enhancements with the Ultimate edition, although a supercharger is available for any 4Runner or FJ Cruiser courtesy of Toyota Racing Development (TRD). The engine has been around for some time, first put into use in 2002 and updated in 2010 to include dual variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i), technology that varies the timing of the intake valves for improved engine efficiency.

TRD’s hands are all over the Ultimate edition. Besides the special color scheme and white grille, this edition brings in a roof rack with rails, 16-inch Goodrich tires with headlock TRD wheels, wheel locks, special badging and privacy glass. The suspension system was enhanced with Bilstein shock absorbers; a TRD aluminum skid plate, active traction control, a rear wiper, and remote keyless entry were also added. Inside, this model has a floating ball multi-information display affixed to the dash with an inclinometer, compass and outside temperature readout. Gray fabric seat inserts, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and a 120-volt/400-watt outlet were also added.

A few other goodies were included with the test model. These were: all-weather mats and cargo mats ($200), a TRD cat-back exhaust system ($550), a towing hitch with wiring harness ($349) and a passenger armrest ($125). Further customization such as light bars, grille guards, cargo covers and an assortment of performance upgrades can be had from Toyota.

Part-Time 4×4 System

The FJ Cruiser’s 4×4 system is part-time and that means that the four-wheel-drive system must be engaged to activate it. Toyota says that you can do this on the fly, up to speeds as high as 50 mph. You may find it easier to move the shifter when stopped and in park or while in neutral before making the changeover. I’ve heard people say that a lot of force must be applied to shift into 4×4 mode when on the move.

Once you are locked and loaded, the off-road fun begins. I had already fulfilled my on-road travels with the FJ Cruiser when I “found” a logging road that wasn’t in use on a recent Saturday. Here in North Carolina, those trails are all over the place as landowners sell off mature trees and dump trucks move back and forth across large swaths of land. That means the clay is packed down in some places, but is also quite loose mostly everywhere else.

Not once did I become stuck nor did I have to rely upon a lower gear for improved crawl ratio. The FJ Cruiser skipped, no romped, through the mess and splattered red mud everywhere. I am no 4×4 maven, but after 10 minutes of churning, stomping and kicking up clay, I felt fully confident that the FJ Cruiser would not let me down. Had more time been allotted to me, I would have headed to the Appalachian range to ford a few creeks and taken to a handful of wooded trails. Even so, I found a second off-road area where the trees had been felled and the stumps are taken out, hilly terrain that extended my off-road experience.

The big, boxy look of the FJ Cruiser places this vehicle somewhere between the Jeep Wrangler and the defunct Hummer H3. It is a four-door model, but the rear doors are rear-hinged and about half the size of the front doors. To access, you need to open the corresponding front door first, then reach inside to pull up a lever that opens the rear door. It is an unusual design, one that adds to this model’s mystique. You can get three people in the back, but legroom for tall passengers is limited.

Other notables about this model include its three front wipers, a huge rear door that swings out to the left side, and numerous hooks and tie-down points in the cargo area. The cloth seats are water-resistant, rubberized flooring is standard and the center console has an iconic face that hearkens to the original FJ display.

With the FJ Cruiser’s departure, the 4Runner will handle midsize SUV duty for Toyota. The latest edition is an off-road beast in its own right, something Toyota proved at a journalist meetup I attended last September north of Atlanta. Turbo Diesel Up: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD

Jeep Grand Cherokee sales are up 15 percent for the year through Nov. 2013. Arguably, it is the most recognized name amongst premium midsize sport utility vehicles, but Jeep is not resting on its laurels. For 2014, the Grand Cherokee gains a new Summit edition, it is outfitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission across the model line, and now offers an optional 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine that matches the performance and towing capabilities of the HEMI V-8.

Three is a Charm

So when a Grand Cherokee arrived in my driveway for the third time this (2014) model year, I was hardly surprised. I started off the GC brigade with a hot rod SRT in May, one powered by a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine. In Aug., a Grand Cherokee Overland fitted with Chryslers renowned 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 gasoline engine had its week in the spotlight. By Nov., rumor had it that the turbo diesel was in the pipeline, but its precise arrival was not made known to me. On Dec. 5, a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD arrived, completing the GC trifecta.

Drive either V-6 and youll be sorely tempted to take the diesel and pay the $4,500 line item upgrade that makes this stout oil burner your own. That is if you choose any model besides the Laredo, because Jeep consigns those buyers to the smaller gasoline engine only. Thats a shame too as you will find it impossible to pay less than $41,000 for any diesel-equipped Grand Cherokee, a price point far above the base $28,995 cost for the Laredo 4×2.

So when life hands you a turbo diesel you do what any sensible driver would do: you hit the road. In this case off-roading was a possibility too as the Limited was a 4WD and a trail-rated one at that. Briefly, I considered taking advantage of some off-road antics, but when one Andrew Roane tendered his offer to pull me out of a ditch if I got stuck, I remembered that the all-season tires were not up to handling the playing around that I had in mind. So there is no off-road review that I can deliver to my readers. What a pity.

What I will share with you is that the turbo diesel is very good off the line and has the strength to keep delivering power as you roar down the road. The motor is rated at 240 horsepower, but knocks out 420 foot-pounds of torque. With my many performance tests I kept sensing that the torque kicked in about one second after I pressed down on the accelerator and once it did it was buh-bye!

And once up to speed the Grand Cherokee handled beautifully with just the slightest touch of the steering wheel turning the wheels with ease. That soft touch is what appeals to the vast majority of Grand Cherokee buyers however, if they wanted to experience the traditional Jeep feel, the Wrangler rises to the occasion. And no doubt if you were to hit the tough trails full on, you might prefer the body-on-frame Wrangler over the unibody Grand Cherokee and its Quadra-Lift suspension notwithstanding.

Elegant and Sensible Cabin

On-road performance and off-road capabilities may be two of the three most important features of the Limited 4×4. The third area where it shines is inside as the cabin is comfortable, smartly laid out and offers very good room for five. Unlike the similar Durango and its third-row seat, the Grand Cherokee sticks to two rows while maintaining generous room for five adults plus 36.3 cubic feet of standard storage room. Fold down the second row seats and storage is increased to 68.3 cubic feet.

The Grand Cherokee Limited offers heated front seats and a heated steering wheel as standard equipment. It also features an 8-way power driver seat with memory, an 8-way front passenger seat, dual zone climate control, heated rear seats, steering wheel paddle shifters, UConnect infotainment, a 9-speaker audio system and a rear view camera with navigation. This SUV is also equipped with remote start, keyless entry, and a power liftgate. A customer preferred package ($3,000 option) brought in automatic high beam control, a headlamp leveling system, Bi-Xenon HID headlamps, LED daytime running lights, rain sensing wipers, and a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen display. The package also includes Nappa leather seating surfaces, a power operated tilt and telescopic steering wheel column, and a dual-panel panoramic sunroof.

Jeep also equipped the tested Grand Cherokee Limited with an off-road package that brought in a rear load leveling suspension, its Quadra-II 4WD system, skid plates, its top towing package, a rear tow hook, a hitch and harness, and a full-size spare. All Grand Cherokee models are outfitted with a select terrain system (auto, sand/mud, snow, rock, sport) and hill start assist. Trailer sway damping, rear park assist, and four-wheel disc brakes are also standard.

Favorite Jeep Grand Cherokee

With three Grand Cherokee drives behind me I have seen the many different faces (and engines) of this model line except for the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8. The Grand Cherokee SRT serves a niche that few will explore, nonetheless it blends the finesse of the Charger SRT with the practicality of an SUV to provide performance rivaling the Porsche Cayenne.

The Grand Cherokee Overland slots between the Limited and the Summit, and that model was equipped with the base 3.6-liter V-6 engine. The Overland brings in the Nappa leather seating, Bi-Xenon headlamps and LED tail lights packaged separately with the Limited, while utilizing the thriftiest gas engine in the model line. With its $43,195 price point, my thinking is that a lot of Overland shoppers will consider the now available turbo-diesel to enjoy improved fuel mileage and towing capabilities.

So that leaves the Limited, one of three premium Grand Cherokee models. It may provide the best value of the lot, bringing to the line a rich combination of performance, fuel efficiency, luxury, technology and off-road capabilities. Such features are what most Grand Cherokee shoppers want and paying upwards of $50,000 for one suits them just fine.

On the Road With the 2013 Toyota Tundra Limited 4WD

Just weeks after testing the 2014 Toyota Tundra at a media event in Georgia and, lo and behold, a 2013 Tundra arrived as my weekly test drive vehicle. The 2013 model year was the final one for the second generation Tundra, while the 2014 model year begins its third generation.

No, our media wires had not crossed, rather what I got was a chance to examine the older edition and compare it with the new model. And the model that arrived in my drive was a Toyota Tundra Limited 4WD CrewMax edition, outfitted with a 5.7-liter V-8 engine, the most powerful motor in Toyotas entire line up.

Toyota Tundra Limited: The Second Generation

And just so you know, the differences between second and third generation Tundras are slight. Toyota gave its big pickup truck an evolutionary update, keeping the same platform, engines and transmissions as the earlier model while giving the new truck a facelift and a fresh interior.

What the 2013 delivers is a model that balances its muscular slab side body with chrome embellishments across the grille, on the door handles and on the back of the side mirrors, and across the front and rear bumpers. The 2014 ups the chrome factor with a thicker layer on its fascia to provide a more menacing look. If I had to choose between the two models I would say that the 2013 provides a more balanced look while the 2014 has a bit too much chrome for my tastes.

Beastly V-8 Performance

Toyota’s 5.7-liter V-8 is a beast. This engine roars to life and is designed to get the job done. It is paired with a sequential shift automatic transmission and makes 381 horsepower.

In this segment performance is king. The big V-8 tows up to 10,400 pounds in some models, reaching 9,800 pounds with the Limited 4WD. Add in its big payload numbers and the 2013 Toyota Tundra CrewMax 4WD moves 16,000 pounds 8 tons of people, all your gear and a trailer. The CrewMax is a full four-door model with a 5.5-foot bed.

Cabin Seating

As outfitted, the CrewMax seated five people with two bucket seats up front and a split folding and reclining rear seat for three. An optional front bench seat is available, but you give up a lot of storage and comfort to squeeze in another person. Thats a sacrifice Tundra drivers may wish to avoid as the drivers seat is thick, supportive and as comfortable as an easy chair.

Moreover, Toyota sticks a highly useful storage compartment between the seats designed to hold hanging files, business cards and other office goodies. Big work trucks are often used as offices on wheels and with a two-tier glove box, in-door storage pockets, in-door flip down compartments, and overhead storage there is no lack of places to stash your electronic devices, supplies and valuables.

The rear seat is as roomy as you will get in this class. Put three big guys in the back and they’ll each have enough hip room to keep them apart with generous amounts of head, shoulder and leg room too. Indeed, I was able to take my 6-foot frame, sit in the middle rear position, cross my legs and avoid touching the rear facing center console. At this trim level, leather seating is standard throughout the cabin; the driver is treated to a 10-way power adjusted seat 4-way for the front passenger.

Interior and Exterior Amenities

Only the Platinum edition comes better equipped than the Limited. The equipment differences essentially come down to perforated leather trim, a center console gated shift lever, and an audio package upgrade. A voice activated navigation system is standard with the Platinum and optional with the Limited. As equipped, that option was included with the Limiteds available TRD Off-Road package.

The Toyota Tundra Limited is outfitted with a tilt and telescoping steering wheel column, steering wheel mounted driver controls, cruise control, dual zone climate control, heated front seats, an Optitron instrument panel with analog and digital displays, and power accessories. This model also came equipped with a power sliding rear window, front map lights, three 120-volt outlets, five cup holders and eight drink holders. A six-speaker JBL audio system is standard; as part of the TRD package a 12-speaker audio system was included. Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, XM satellite radio, a rear view camera, a power tilt and slide moonroof with a sliding sunshade were also found.

On the outside the Tundra was outfitted with chrome tubular step rails, a bed step, a bed extender, a bedliner, a front skid plate and alloy wheel locks. The TRD package bumped the standard 17-inch wheels up to 18 inches and added five-spoke alloy wheels.

On the Road

The Toyota Tundra Limited 4WD is a stout pickup truck. Put the key in the ignition, fire up the engine, engage the transmission and you are ready to take on the world. Or at least your small part of it.

Its high profile, oversized side mirrors and rolling presence are enhanced by the sweet note emitting from its exhaust. Floor the accelerator and this trucks growl gives way to a roar, moving down the road with confidence and authority. Not once do you feel that you are fighting the steering nor do you experience the sensation that the suspension will disappoint you as you move off road. Its on road ride may not match a Lexus, but it is as good as you will find in an Avalon.

With the model year changeover in progress as this report goes to press, the biggest decision you may have is deciding whether to go with a 2013 or a 2014 Toyota Tundra. Among manufacturers, Toyota is usually conservative with its incentives, but when it comes to big pickup trucks all players (i.e, Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ram 1500 and Nissan Titan) join in the fight for consumers, including the Tundra. Auto Trends has found that discounts on previous generation models are usually even higher as manufacturers seek to help clear dealer lots.

If the Toyota FJ Cruiser looks like a much older design than what it is, you’ll be forgiven for making that mistake. The FJ Cruiser has been on the market since 2007, but its a model that points to Toyota’s heritage, specifically its ability to make Jeep-like vehicles. The FJ Cruiser updates the FJ40’s design, first introduced stateside in the early 1960s. The current model takes those iconic styling cues and places them on a new frame, a 4×2 or 4×4 vehicle that retails from the high 20s.

Model Highlights

Toyota FJ CruiserThe Toyota FJ Cruiser looks like a two-door model, but it has four doors. The rear doors are rear-hinged to improve access to the back seat. This boxy SUV hearkens to a bygone era while bringing in modern characteristics for a more refined appearance and ride.

Standard equipment includes a two-tone paint scheme featuring a white roof with a contrasting body color, black over fenders, halogen head lamps, power side mirrors, 17-inch steel wheels set within sport or off-road tires, a lift up glass hatch, skid plates and an optional exterior spare tire cover.

The cabin of the Toyota FJ Cruiser has seat belts for five, but the rear seating room is cramped and suitable primarily for children. This model offers air conditioning with rear seat vents, a six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth wireless technology, cloth seating surfaces, a tilt steering wheel, power windows and door locks, cargo tie-down hooks, map lights and four cup holders and two bottle holders. A leather-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel and a JBL audio system are package options.

Engine and Transmission

Toyota offers one engine choice, a 4.0-liter 24-valve V-6 engine. This engine makes 260 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 271 foot-pounds of torque at 4,400 rpm. It is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual transmission is available with the full-time four-wheel drive model only.

Fuel Economy

Fuel economy comes in at 16 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway for the 4×2 automatic transmission model. The 4×4 manual transmission model gets 15 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway, while the 4×4 AT is rated at 17 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. This model takes regular grade gasoline.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser has a 19-gallon fuel tank, giving this vehicle a maximum range of 380 miles. That enough fuel to take this vehicle from Houston to New Orleans on one tank of gas.

Model Dimensions

The Toyota FJ Cruiser sits on a 105.9-inch wheelbase and is 183.9 inches long by 75 inches wide by 72 inches tall. Its front track measures 63.2 inches, its rear track comes in at 63.6 inches.

Head room is 41.3 inches up front to 40.3 inches in the rear. Shoulder room comes in at 58.4 inches in the front seat to 53.9 inches in the back. Hip room measures 55.4 inches in the first row to 51 inches in the second row. Leg room is 41.9 inches up front to 31.3 inches in the back.

Standard ground clearance is 8.7 inches. It measures 9.6 inches with 4×4 models. This vehicle weighs from 4.079 to 4,343 pounds and has a gross vehicle weight rating ranging from 5,330 to 5,570 pounds.

Safety Features and Warranties

Every FJ Cruiser is outfitted with Toyota’s Star Safety System featuring vehicle stability control, traction control, an anti-lock brake system, electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist and smart stop technology. Airbags, active headrests, a seatbelt pretensioning system, a tire pressure monitoring system, and child protector rear door locks are included.

The FJ Cruiser comes with a 3-year, 36,000-mile comprehensive warranty, a 5-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year, unlimited miles corrosion perforation warranty. Toyota Care, offering complimentary maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, is also included.

The Ford F-150 is the best selling pickup truck on the planet, harnessing volume sales to keep ahead of the competition. But, it isn’t the volume models that define this truck for many buyers, rather the many and varied sub-models that have been sold down through the years.

SVT Raptor Prowess

On top of the speciality model heap is the SVT Raptor, a high-performance model designed for serious off-road enthusiasts, people that are want something that goes beyond the show to tell. The 2014 F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition quick, say that fast three times hits the market this fall. New touches include a Ruby Red finish, special exterior graphics and numerous cabin refinements. If red isn’t to your liking, then a Tuxedo Black Metallic finish can be had instead. Then there are the non-special edition models that might be more to your liking.

Although SVT Raptor is a niche model, Ford sold more than 13,000 copies in 2012. So far this year sales are up by 14 percent, demonstrating that this trucks appeal is a fairly broad one.

Incremental Model Changes

Changes to the SVT Raptor line have been incremental with Ford adding a four-door SuperCrew model to its existing two-door SuperCab edition beginning in 2011. In 2012, Ford added a Torsen limited-slip differential to the trucks 4WD system along with a grille-mounted camera to expand driver visibility when rock climbing.

In 2013, Ford added headlock capable wheels for improved traction and HID headlamps. Ford SYNC was also made available to the SVT Raptor line for the first time.

Inside, the special edition enhancements include Brick Red seat bolsters with black inserts and cloth honeycomb highlights, a console top finish panel, and center stack and door panel appliqué accents. All models are outfitted with all-terrain tires, internal triple-bypass FOX Racing Shox™ dampers, skid plates and hill descent control.

Engine and Transmission

Every SVT Raptor is powered by a 6.2 liter V-8 engine that is rated at 411 horsepower and makes 434 foot-pounds of torque. This engine is paired with an electronic six-speed automatic transmission that features a tow/haul mode and manual shifting capabilities.

The truck’s four-wheel-drive system is of shift-on-the-fly design and the front differential has a 4.10 to 1 gearing the same as the rear electronic-locking differential.
