What We Know About the All-New 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Jeep’s new model brings the brand into three-row territory.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is finally getting a three-row version with room for as many as seven passengers. This week, Fiat Chrysler (soon to be Stellantis) revealed the all-new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, which will go on sale in the second quarter. Because it’s based on an all-new architecture, it is distinctly different from the current two-row Grand Cherokee.


Seven Million Strong


It has been nearly 30 years since Jeep launched the Grand Cherokee nameplate, slotting this model above the renowned Cherokee. Over the course of three decades, Jeep has sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. Its first-ever three-row variant, which carries an “L” signature, will expand this model’s reach accordingly.

The new model will be built at Jeep’s new facility in Detroit and come in four trims: Laredo, Limited, Overland, and Summit. An all-new two-row Grand Cherokee and a 4xe electrified version of this five-seater will follow.

Sitting on a 121.7-inch wheelbase and measuring 204.9 inches long, the Grand Cherokee L launches Jeep’s initiative into larger and more luxurious vehicles. Indeed, a Grand Wagoneer prototype was unveiled last year and is expected to go into production in 2022. Where Jeep has dominated the four-by-four market from the subcompact Renegade to the burly Wrangler and on through the Grand Cherokee, the brand will target some of the biggest and priciest SUV models with its expanded product line.


Competitive Set


Inasmuch as the Grand Cherokee L is a new model, it’ll compete against many existing models that already occupy that space. For example, the Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, and Buick Enclave are among its chief domestic rivals. The Dodge Durango, an FCA product, is also present.

Further, the segment features many other competitors including the Toyota Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder, Kia Telluride, Volkswagen Atlas, Mazda CX-9, Subaru Ascent, and the Hyundai Palisade. Most of these models offer standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive (only the Subaru offers standard AWD). As for the new Jeep, it comes in standard rear-wheel drive and has available four-wheel drive (like the Ford Explorer), the latter attribute underscoring its off-road prowess.

Highlights of the Jeep Grand Cherokee L


Besides the features already mentioned, the new model will include the following:

1. Key exterior features.

All models come with automatic headlamps. From there, the differences depend largely on the trim choice and may include front tow hooks, LED fog lamps, puddle lighting, power-controlled and fold-away heated side mirrors, 18-, 20-, or 21-inch aluminum wheels, all-season or all-terrain tires, and a power liftgate, just to name a few of the key features.

2. Key interior features.

Just as the exterior comes with many feature choices, the same can be said for the cabin. Cloth seats on the base model give way to a variety of real hides on the three other trims. Further, some trims include real wood trim, including walnut. Full power accessories, climate control, and tilt-and-telescopic steering column come standard. Other available features include a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, heated and ventilated second-row bucket seats, and seat-back massage in the first row.

3. Seating for six or seven.

Shoppers have a choice of seating arrangements, with a 2-3-2 layout featuring a middle row bench seat or a 2-2-2 layout with center-row bucket seats. In the latter configuration, the seats feature 7 inches of travel and also tip forward for improved access to the rear seat. Moreover, the bucket seats can also be removed. Importantly, child safety seats installed in the second row can stay put when the seats are tilted forward. Also, the second-row seats recline 18 degrees.

4. Two engine choices.

Jeep’s newest model comes with two very familiar engine choices. Firstly, the standard engine is a 3.6-liter V6 with an output of 290 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque. Models powered by this engine come with standard rear-wheel drive or available four-wheel drive. Secondly, a 5.7-liter V8 engine with 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque is available. This one works with four-wheel drive only. Both engines send power to the wheels by utilizing an 8-speed automatic transmission.

5. Three Jeep four-by-four systems.

Like the Grand Cherokee and certain other Jeep models, this one gives shoppers a choice of three four-by-four systems along with its Selec-Terrain traction management system with five terrain modes. Dubbed Quadra-Trac 1, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II, these systems supply this Jeep with varying levels of off-road capabilities. All three systems come with an active transfer case that’s designed to improve traction as it moves torque to the wheel with the most grip. Notably, the Quadra-Trac 1 system utilizes a single-speed transfer case, the Quadra-Trac 2 system a two-speed transfer case, while the Quadra-Drive II adds a rear electronic limited-slip differential to its two-speed active transfer case. On balance, the new Jeep has a competitive off-road edge to tout.

6. An air suspension system.

The new Grand Cherokee L model offers a quadra-lift air suspension system bundled with electronic adaptive damping for heightened ground clearance and water fording. This SUV’s normal ride height is 8.3 inches, raising it to 9.9 inches when switched to Off-Road 1 mode. Move it to Off-Road 2 mode and its supplies 10.9 inches of ground clearance. The system also features park mode, whereby it lowers the normal ride height by 1.8 inches for ingress and egress improvement. Lastly, an Aero Mode lowers the suspension system by 0.8 inches for improved aerodynamic flow while driving, thereby optimizing fuel efficiency.

7. Uconnect 5 system.

Uconnect is FCA’s infotainment system and is in our estimation one of the better ones available. Jeep’s new model rolls out the latest and most advanced version, called Uconnect 5. This one promises operating speeds that are five times faster than the previous generation. Furthermore, this system features either an 8.4- or 10.1-inch color touch-screen display, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, a fully customizable home screen, dual connectivity for a pair of Bluetooth devices, Alexa services, TomTom navigation, over-the-air updates, and 4G LTE Wi-Fit hotspot connectivity for as many as eight devices. Surprisingly, up to 12 USB ports are available across all three rows.

8. A long list of active driving support features.

The Grand Cherokee L comes with a lengthy roster of driver-assist technologies, including full-speed collision warning with active braking and pedestrian/cyclist detection. Also included is adaptive cruise control with full stop and go, rear cross path detection, active lane management, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring, and parking assistance. In addition, other available features include a night vision camera, head-up display, intersection collision assist, drowsy driver detection, a digital rearview camera system, and traffic sign recognition. All in all, the new Jeep brings with it the safety features we expect in today’s new models.

9. Basic maintenance is included.

Like premium automakers, Grand Cherokee L owners have access to the Jeep Wave maintenance program. Specifically, this one supplies three years of maintenance at Jeep dealerships, including oil changes and tire rotations. Also, such features as 24-hour support, trip interruption coverage with complimentary first-day coverage, and VIP access to select Jeep brand events are included.

To sum up, Jeep brings to the market a model it has long needed. That point alone ensures that Jeep faithful will give it a strong look before considering another brand. We think that as one of 14 brands managed by Stellantis, Jeep will continue to thrive. As a result, additional models, including electrified variants, should help grow the brand.

Hot Stuff: Lexus RC F Sport Coupe

Lexus and performance are nothing new. We’ve seen a host of hot models down through the years, capped by the V10-powered LFA, a $400,000 supercar built in 2011 and 2012.

Since the LFA’s brief run, Lexus has released a pair of sports cars – the RC in 2015 followed by the LC in 2018. The two share a common engine, but are built on separate platforms. The RC also offers a turbocharged four-cylinder and naturally aspirated V6 engines, the latter with available all-wheel drive.


Lexus RC F Review


Our most recent test model was the top-level RC F, itself powered by a naturally aspirated V8 engine. The RC F is officially a trim unto itself, but there is also a Track Edition variant. You’ll pay $64,900 for the first choice and $96,800 for the second one. The latter features, “exclusive high-strength and lightweight carbon fiber components like a fixed rear wing and hood.” Lexus says it has a “best-in-class power-to-weight ratio.” It is also slightly faster than the standard RC F, with a 0-60 mph time of 3.96 seconds.

Exterior

If you’re expecting a sharp-looking exterior from Lexus, the RC F does not disappoint. Its racecar lines are apparent with strong shoulders, a sharply falling roofline, high profile, and a short rear deck amplifying the same.

Lexus equips the RC F with Bi-LED headlamps and daytime running lights, the expected oversized spindle grille dressed in mesh, a front spoiler, rear wing, and a diffuser marked by cascading quad exhaust tips. Among the standout features are the 19-inch BBS forged alloy wheels set within summer tires and the Brembo six-piston calipers up front (four in the rear).

The list of upgrades includes carbon-fiber exterior trim (front spoiler, roof, rocker-panel splitters, rear diffuser, and wing). Also available are a set of Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes with red brake calipers. Titanium mufflers are optional.



Interior

Like other sport coupes, the Lexus RC F comes with 2+2 seating. Just forget the rear seats – they’re useful for extra storage space and nothing else. As for the front seats, they’re bolstered and very comfortable. Not especially hard, but they certainly aren’t plush – just right in my book.

Lexus dresses the cabin in imitation or real leather. The imitation leather looks quite good, but there is no substitute for the real thing. It’s a sports car layout that blends simplicity with elegance. We like the instrumentation ripped from the LFA with its G-force display and lap timer.

The list of standard features includes keyless entry with push-button start, a full leather interior, dual-zone climate control, bolstered front seats, and 10-way power driver and 8-way power front passenger seats.

Besides the lack of rear-seat usability, the RC F doesn’t offer many places to squirrel away small items. That’s a deficiency especially noted these days with storage compartments of greater importance for our many electronic devices.



Safety and Technology

Lexus (and Toyota) supplies a strong bundle of driver-assist safety features. The RC F comes with a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, high-speed dynamic cruise control, and automatic high beams. Parking assist is available separately.

On the tech front, Lexus gets it right…mostly. You still must deal with the scratchpad that controls the touchscreen. That’s a showstopper for some people.

Lexus does supply a 10-speaker audio system with Wi-Fi, and a one-year 4GB connection. Also included is the 7-inch screen, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. You’ll find Apple CarPlay integration, but not Android Auto. The latter is likely to show up next year.

The list of upgrades includes a 17-speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound System and navigation with a 10.3-inch color display.



On the Road

Before we look at the model at hand, the standard RC deems a mention. The standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 241 horsepower. Optionally, Lexus offers a 3.5-liter V6, which is tuned to just 260 horsepower or 311 horsepower, depending on the sub trim (300 v. 350). We can’t imagine choosing anything less than 311 horses for a car endowed with sports car looks.

The RC F takes this model much higher, as it delivers a potent 472 horsepower and 395 pound-feet of torque. Its better suited for a model weighing 3,902 pounds – about 250 pounds more than the 2020 Corvette — but it does affect its driving characteristics (more on that later). Power routes to the rear wheels utilizing an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Slip behind the wheel, and the RC F sits low, but offers decent sightlines. The transmission shifter sits in the console ahead of the front seats and may be operated in manual mode with the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. We’re not a fan of the plastic paddle shifters – large titanium shifters would be the ideal (and mounted to the steering column is best, IMO).

The RC F quickly fires up and supplies a low-to-moderate hum. Of course, once you rev the engine the guttural exhaust note confirms what we suspected: this engine possesses the power to deliver.



Under hard acceleration, the RC F moves down the road without missing a beat. The transmission shifts quickly, helping this sports car to move from 0 to 60 mph in an estimated 4.2 seconds. That’s more than a second off the times for both the Corvette and GT-R, and just behind the F-Type. Oddly, the LC takes 4.4 seconds to complete the run-up to 60 mph.

Owners of Detroit muscle will appreciate this beefy V8. No, let me amend that: they’ll laud it. It is simply a wonderful engine paired with an equally capable transmission. It begs for a manual gearbox but that’s out of the question – the demand just doesn’t justify supplying one. In any case, its strong acceleration pushes this engine to the redline where it bellows and sings.

The RC F’s handling is very good, although not great. As mentioned, its weight is a factor that cannot be denied as it affects everything from acceleration to steering to cornering. That said, a TORSEN limited-slip rear differential and an adaptive variable transmission enhance control.

This sports car (or should we say sports coupe) grips the road with precision and handles the twisties with ease. When cornering, the RC F moves willingly forward, but there is a measure of body roll detected when pulling out. Oddly, we felt the Toyota GR Supra 2.0T handled better and that’s likely due to a few things, including its tighter footprint, smaller mass, and a generally more planted feel.

Competitive Set

The list of competing models includes a trio of German coupes: the Audi A5, BMW’s 4 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. You might also compare top versions of America’s muscle cars, the Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger, and the Chevrolet Camaro. True, none of these three compare on the luxury front, but each offers a familiar sport coupe layout and powerful performance options that best anything from Lexus.


Our Recommendation


The Lexus RC F in its standard guise will appeal to the vast majority of shoppers. If you’re considering the Track Edition, it’s priced in the neighborhood of the Lexus LC. In that case, we’d recommend the LC for its sharper styling and better handling, although you lose the rear seat which is truly no loss at all.

Kia Sets K5 to Replace Optima

The all-new K5 replaces the outgoing Kia Optima.

The Kia Optima is a midsize sedan and has earned its place in a crowded, albeit shrinking segment. Launched in 2001, the Optima was Kia’s first midsize sedan for the U.S. market. Since then, Kia has rolled out larger models, including the Cadenza and K900 sedans, but the Optima is the volume seller of the three.

We won’t see a 2021 Optima as Kia has decided after four generations to rename this vehicle the K5, what it’s called in other markets, including Korea. The all-new model shares much with the Hyundai Sonata, its corporate stablemate, and will thus bring forth several of the same engineering attributes while maintaining its distinct shape and design embellishments.

2021 Kia K5 Highlights

Longer, wider, and lower than the Optima. Today’s midsize sedans are yesterday’s full-size models. Or at least they’re very close in dimensions. The new K5 sits on a 112.2-inch wheelbase (+1.8 inch) and is 193.1 inches long (+2 inches). It is also 73.2 inches wide (+1.0 inch) and sits 0.8 inches lower to the ground than the Optima. Kia says the suspension geometry is “optimized for sporty handling, responsiveness and stability,” and features an increased tensile strength.

Unique exterior styling. The new K5 borrows elements popular in the Kia Stinger and also found in the Cadenza. The GT-Line and GT trim models feature a shark skin-inspired mesh design on front grille and dual chrome exhaust tip garnish, “heart-beat” daytime running lights and taillights with available LED “dashes” spanning the breadth of the rear deck lid, gloss black applique, and newly designed 16-, 18-, or 19-inch alloy wheels. Incidentally, the 18- and 19-inch wheels are shod within Pirelli P-Zero tires.

Special interior touches. All K5 trims feature an aircraft-type shift knob, a blend of premium and sporty upholstery options including red imitation leather seating, satin chrome metallic and wood-like finishes on the dashboard and door panels, and a panoramic sunroof, depending on the trim.

Two turbocharged engine choices. Four out of the five K5 trims will offer a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The performance numbers are in line with what you’d expect in this segment, at least with a base model. This engine works with standard front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. But if that’s not enough, a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque is what drives the top GT trim. The standard engine works with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the optional engine is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

All-wheel drive is now optional. Unlike the Sonata, the new K5 will offer available all-wheel drive. This is keeping with a trend we’ve seen in recent years where the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry now have optional all-wheel drive. All three follow on the heels of the Subaru Legacy, the only model in the segment with standard all-wheel drive. Previously, both the Chrysler 200 and the Ford Fusion offered all-wheel drive, but both models have since been discontinued.

There are four standard drive modes: normal, smart, sport, and custom with the GT Line receiving a fifth: sport+. Adjusting the modes impacts drivability, including engine, transmission, and steering. In models equipped with all-wheel drive, the mapping extends to that feature as well and brings in a snow mode.

Upgraded tech features. Kia says the K5 will have an 8- or 10.25-inch high-resolution color touchscreen along with split-screen functionality and available satellite radio. The navigation system is server-based with real-time traffic information. As for Bluetooth, two phones can connect simultaneously. The usual UVO telematics suite returns and brings with it further customization to allow each driver to set his/her settings. The Bose audio system with 12 available speakers is something we’d expect in a luxury car. A first for Kia is wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility – no need for a cord as the connection is accomplished seamlessly.

The “Drive Wise” suite of safety features. All 2021 K5 models come with standard forward collision warning, forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane-following assist, and driver attention warning. The list of upgrades includes blind-spot collision avoidance, forward collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic avoidance assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Kia K5 Pricing, Availability

Kia will price the 2021 K5 from $23,490 plus a $965 destination charge. Available in five trims, the top-of-the-line GT costs $30,490. Where available, all-wheel drive adds $2,100 to the LXS and $3,700 to the GT, along with other features.

In all, we think the new K5 will aggressively carve a niche for itself in the segment. Its arrival follows the demise of the Buick LaCrosse, which is perhaps the model Kia had in mind when designing this premium midsize four-door sedan.

The K5 is built in West Point, Georgia, alongside the Telluride SUV. It will arrive in U.S. showrooms this fall.

BMW X6 M Competition

BMW’s formidable line of SUVs is comprised of seven models sequentially named from X1 to X7. This German marque leaves no holes in its lineup, ensuring that there is a luxury utility vehicle for every shopper.

But BMW doesn’t stop there. Indeed, recognizing that many of its customers transitioned from coupes and sedans to SUVs and have also long placed a premium on speed, four models ranging from the X3 to X6 have “M” performance variants.

The largest of the four is known as the BMW X6 M and was a recent visitor to the Auto Trends test fleet. Specifically, an M6 Competition model with jaw-dropping output offered a week’s worth of on-road thrills.


2020 BMW X6 Review


The 2020 model year launches the X6’s fourth-generation (the third for the M line). This model continues to share the underpinnings of the X5 and offers a coupe-like design with a formidable expression. BMW offers this model in X6 sDrive40i ($64,300), X6 xDrive40i ($66,600), and X6 M50i ($85,650) configurations. Further, you’ll find a pair of “M” models known simply as the X6 M ($108,600) and the X6 M Competition ($117,600).

For the focus of this review, we’ll concentrate on the X6 M/Competition and its unique styling and performance characteristics. Likewise, any mention of the standard models is for comparison purposes only.



Exterior

There is nothing subtle about the BMW X6 M. From its gangly shape to outrageous lines, this X6 is a beastly model.
The M lines simply magnify the look with its oversized twin-kidney grille leading the way. A broad lower intake and huge side cutouts along with LED signature lights add to the drama. Overall, it’s intimidating and overpowering – if you see one fast approaching in your rearview mirror, more than likely you’ll scoot over to allow it to pass.

Sculpted wheel arches, a high profile, and a sloping roof leading to a notched liftgate are among the other design features of note. From the rear, narrow wraparound lights and a diffuser highlight the look, but with far less drama and intimidation than the front.

Interior

You can fit five inside the X6 M, but it’s most comfortable for four. Access and egress to the rear seat is a bit challenging as you’ll have to bend your head to avoid making contact with the roof. Once inside, the rear seat is spacious, comfortable, and roomy.

The best seats, of course, are up front. Dual thrones with heating, cooling, and massaging features not only offer maximum support, but they’re thickly bolstered for spirited driving. Just make sure when you enter you clear the seat edges to avoid landing on one of the hard sides.

BMW interiors are among the best in the industry and the X6 lives up to that expectation. The interiors, particularly on the top trims, feature high-end leathers, aluminum edges, quilted inserts, and Alcantara headliners. Not a plastic surface anywhere. Ambient and nighttime lighting add to the mystique.




Tech

The tech goodies are apparent in the X6 M. BMW supplies this model with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with HD Radio, satellite radio, a CD player, connected services, and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility. Sorry, no Android Auto.

Other features include wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and the usual USB inputs.

Safety

BMW supplies the X6 M with multiple driver-assist features, including active driving assistant. This suite includes frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation and lane departure warning.

Automatic high beams, active blind-spot detection, surround-view cameras, and active park distance control are also included.



Performance

By now, you’ve likely figured out that the X6 M is mostly about performance. Under the hood is BMW’s most powerful V8 engine, a twin-turbo beauty displacing 4.4-liters. This engine is found in a variety of applications and typically punctuates all things M.

In its normal mode, it makes 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. That alone is laudable, enabling this strapping SUV to move from 0-60 mph in about 4 seconds. If you want to move just under that threshold, then choose either M model with special engine tuning. Here, you’ll find a whopping 600 or 617 horsepower at the ready. BMW routes power to all four wheels utilizing an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Doubtlessly, the X6 M is loud. And fast. Engage the ignition and the engine rumbles to life and sends out a boom throw the exhaust system. That system is adjustable, allowing for a louder cacophony as desired. Your neighbors, though, may appreciate a more silent approach, something you can supply by deactivating the soundtrack until you’re on the open road.



The X6 is heavy, with the fully loaded Competition weighing just over two-and-one-half tons. That’s a lot of weight to move, but the bigly V8 does so with ease. Step-off acceleration is amazing – the twin turbos conspire to develop power flawlessly and consistently. If you want to make the run up to 100 mph, this engine never flags in zeal.
Weighed steering, direct handling, and a wonderful connection to the road are among this SUV’s hallmarks. It doesn’t have quite the on-road chops of an M4, but it is close.

Despite its high profile, the X6 M stays the course, handling twisty roads with ease and pulling out of corners on point, thanks largely to its rear bias. Certainly, this SUV is a gamer and individuals with deep pockets are eager to buy in.

For everyone else, the standard twin-turbo V6 with 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque should do. We’ve driven other BMW models with this engine and have found it more than up to the task.

Competitive Set

There are few direct competitors to the BMW X6 M. One of the most obvious is the Mercedes-AMG GLE 43/63. The Lamborghini Urus is another one. If you’re looking at the standard X6, the Lexus GX, Audi Q7, and Infiniti QX60 are worth considering.



Our Recommendation


Should you choose the X6 M or the X6 Competition? The difference between the two is $9,000, a price that includes some trim and interior upgrades, badging, and added performance.

There are two packages to consider — a Drivers Assistance Professional Package ($1,700 and includes adaptive cruise control which surprisingly isn’t included elsewhere) and an Executive Package ($3,600) with heated seats, heated and cooled front cup holders, ventilated front seats, soft-close front doors, rear manual side window shades, and adaptive headlights with laser light.

Other features offered separately include Night Vision With Pedestrian Detection ($2,300), a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Audio System ($3,400), Rear-Seat Entertainment Professional ($2,200), and an M Performance Package ($2,500). Fully built out and this model will set you back by more than $134,000.

When all is said and done, you’ll likely pay at least $120,000 for one of most powerful SUVs available.

Spotlight on the Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition

2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition.

In the world of SUVs, the Toyota Land Cruiser is a rare breed. This traditional body-on-frame utility vehicle is designed to handle the most rugged terrain. But it also delivers around-town comfort, putting it within an exclusive family of luxury models.

That dichotomy makes the Land Cruiser so unusual. Few mainstream models dare to compete against loftier brands, but then the Land Cruiser predates most. Indeed, the forerunner of this four-wheel-drive vehicle rolled out in 1951, evolved, and has stayed in production since. More than 10,000,000 units have been built with distribution scattered across the globe.

Special Heritage Edition

The current U.S. version dates to 2007, but has benefitted since with significant changes made in 2013, 2015, and again in 2020. This year, a limited-edition Heritage edition is in place, marking the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the FJ40, which is largely recognized as the spiritual successor to the current model. The Heritage is a five-seat SUV and only 1,200 units are available in the U.S. this year.

Adding the Heritage trim effectively doubles the Land Cruiser’s model offerings. Besides eliminating the third-row seat, the Heritage drops the running boards, adds BBS 18-inch wheels, and brings in a roof basket. Access to the cargo area is still the same employing a split power-controlled tailgate: the top part lifts; the lower part drops down.


The Heritage edition leaves off the chrome, gains special wheels and has a basket roof rack.


Inside and Out

The Toyota Land Cruiser is a throwback, at least with its design. Despite modern touches such as LED lights, daytime running lights, a power moonroof, power tailgate, and alloy wheels, the canvas ties in well with earlier models.

Happily, Toyota doesn’t skimp on the details either, as it includes fog lamps, a roof rack, heated side mirrors, a rear spoiler, chrome embellishments (except on the Heritage edition), and aluminum running boards on the standard model.

Inside, the cabin is swathed in leather, which covers the seats, wraps the steering wheel, and tops the transmission shifter. Soft-touch materials, wood grain trim, and limited use of hard plastics in out-of-the-way places are other features of note.

The Land Cruiser comes with full power accessories, including a power-controlled tilt-and-telescopic steering column. Four-zone climate control is standard as is a cooler box between the front seats. The front seats are thick and all-day comfortable and come with heating and cooling control. The driver seat has 10-way control with lumbar support, while the passenger seat delivers 8-way control.

The second row 40-20-40 split-bench seat slides, reclines, folds, and tumbles. The outboard positions are heated. In models with the third-row 50-50 bench seat, that one folds flat as well.



Tech & Safety

Toyota equips the Land Cruiser with a 14-speaker JBL audio system, navigation, and a Qi wireless charging pad. Other features include a 9-inch touch-screen display, satellite radio, HD Radio, Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB ports.

Sadly absent is smartphone compatibility as neither Android Auto nor Apple CarPlay integration is available. This fact stands even as more Toyota and Lexus products integrate the two systems, especially the latter.

But props are due to Toyota for including sought-after driver-assist safety features as standard equipment. Indeed, under the Toyota Safety Sense P umbrella, the Land Cruiser comes with automatic high beams, sway warning control, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection.

However, Toyota’s version of active lane control – lane tracing assist – isn’t included. And although crash tests haven’t been conducted, we’re confident that the Land Cruiser’s mass makes this vehicle a whole lot safer than most any small car.


No third row seat means more standard cargo room for the Heritage edition.

Under the Hood and Off-Road

Powering every 2020 Land Cruiser model is a 5.7-liter V8 engine. This engine works with an 8-speed automatic transmission and outputs a robust 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. Moreover, it has an “old school” feel to it and supplies the accompanying roar of a big V8 under hard acceleration.

The Land Cruiser’s four-wheel-drive system uses a TORSEN limited-slip locking center differential and a two-speed transfer case with a selectable low-range. When locked, the rear wheels turn in unison, regardless of traction. The transfer case aids in off-road chops, enabling the Land Cruiser to tackle the toughest terrain, including mud, which is where low transmission gearing comes in. These features underscore the Land Cruiser’s legendary status.

A solid rear axle and a ladder frame are two attributes particular to the Land Cruiser. It’s what enables this model to shine off-road, although it also means the Land Cruiser is bouncy around town, outmatched by the unibody design of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, for instance. Further, the steering is light to the touch, not especially weighted, and lacks the feedback we’d prefer.

Yet, once taken off-road, the Land Cruiser is in its element. It’s one of the few models that isn’t a Jeep Wrangler that also isn’t afraid to tackle the most challenging terrain. Sadly for us, our favorite trails at Uwharrie National Forest were closed for the winter, the same place where we navigated a Wrangler four-door last summer.

Still, there were plenty of other options nearby which weren’t as lengthy, yet were still challenging. Happily, the Land Cruiser responded with ease, with every approach, breakover, and departure angle tested with frequency. On one stretch of muddy terrain, the low-speed gearing proved its mettle. Essentially, the only difference between the Jeep and the Toyota is in its size as there are trails where the latter is too wide or at least should be outfitted with additional gear, including brush and light guards to protect vulnerable areas.

We’d be remiss if we omitted two other points about the Land Cruiser. First, this SUV pulls up to 8,100 pounds, when properly equipped. Thus, the Toyota keeps up with other big SUVs, including the Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Tahoe. Second, the Land Cruiser has a 24.6-gallon fuel tank. That’s a large hold, but also necessary as this SUV consumes gas with abandon. Fortunately, you’ll fuel up with regular grade instead of premium fuel, thus managing your costs somewhat.

Land Cruiser Considerations

Opting for a Land Cruiser is an $85,415 investment, plus a $1,395 destination charge. The Heritage edition costs $87,745.

The only package available is a rear-seat entertainment system ($2,200). This one comes with the standard model only and includes a pair of 11.6-in display screens, RCA jacks, HDMI input, a remote, and two wireless headphones.

In all, the Land Cruiser delivers maximum trail-tackling fun, along with a relatively upscale cabin. Yet, it doesn’t match the interior detailing of select BMW and Land Rover models. For that reason, the Lexus LX delivers the full amenities to take on the top tier, although its lower bumpers mean it cannot match the Land Cruiser’s off-road chops.

Highlights of the 2020 Toyota Sienna

An all-new Nightshade Edition debuts for 2020.

The Toyota Sienna is a multipurpose vehicle, better known as a “minivan,” although it certainly isn’t diminutive. The Sienna is a three-row people hauler with room for eight, an alternative to the Toyota Highlander crossover. Both offer all-wheel drive.

The Sienna’s available all-wheel-drive system is unique to minivans, giving this model an edge, especially in areas where wintry conditions prevail. The Sienna operates in a shrinking segment with four competing models: the Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Grand Caravan, Honda Odyssey, and the Kia Sedona.

Toyota Sienna Highlights

The following are among the significant points about the 2020 Sienna:

1. Five trims for the choosing.

The Sienna is available in five trims: L, LE, SE, XLE, and Limited. It seats 7 or 8, supplies upwards of 150 cubic feet of storage capacity, and can pull up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped. An available Auto Access Seat supplies a mobility option with its 330-pound rating.

2. Your choice of front- or all-wheel drive.

As mentioned, the Toyota Sienna is the only model in its segment with available all-wheel drive. Most buyers, however, will find front-wheel drive sufficient. In models equipped with all-wheel drive, the Sienna benefits from active torque control, available with the LE, XLE, and Limited trims.

3. An all-new Nightshade Edition debuts.

Toyota keeps the Sienna fresh this year by offering an available Nightshade Edition. This special package ($700) is available across the model line, adding a black sport mesh front grille, black 19-inch wheels (18 inches for all-wheel drive), black door handles and mirror caps, and black Toyota badges. Besides the Midnight Black Metallic trim, there are three other exterior colors to choose from. The interior is dressed in black.

4. Improved connectivity choices this year.

Toyota has slowly, but surely added connectivity features, choosing to vet each product carefully before making them available to the public. This year, you’ll find both Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa connectivity, although we’re still waiting for Android Auto.

5. Lots of safety features provided.

Advanced driver-assist features such as automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and lane departure alert with steering assist are standard. Also available is blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Some models include safety telematics technology, which is bundled with automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle notification, an emergency assistance button, and roadside assistance.

6. A powerful engine and capable automatic transmission.

Powering the 2020 Sienna is a 3.5-liter V6 engine with best-in-class 296 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. This model makes an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway for a combined 21 mpg. The all-wheel-drive model makes a combined 20 mpg.

7. Seating choices galore.

Toyota designed the Sienna’s interior so that the third-row seats fold down and the second-row seats may be removed. Wide-opening dual-sliding doors make access and egress easier. The second-row Captain’s chairs slide nearly two feet rearward, which supply tremendous legroom. In the Limited FWD edition, the second-row chairs are wrapped in leather and include dual armrests, leg and foot support, and a mechanism for easy repositioning or removal.

8. Loads of standard and available technologies.

All 2020 Sienna models come with a 7-inch touch-screen display. Standard features include six speakers, Bluetooth, USB ports, and an app suite. Available upgrades include a CD player, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Siri Eyes Free. Some models have a 10-soaker audio system, navigation, additional USB ports, and a rear entertainment system.

Toyota Sienna Considerations

Priced from the low $30sK to just under $50,000, there is a Toyota Sienna to fit most budgets. The SE and XLE grades offer most of the features customers want. With available all-wheel drive, both trims cost about $40,000, including destination.

Where Luxury Meets Performance:

The all-new Audi SQ5 is big on performance and luxury.

It isn’t too often that I get a performance vehicle, but when one arrives, I rub my hands in delicious anticipation of the drive ahead.

Most of my performance test models are coupes and sports cars, such as the Ford Mustang and Jaguar F-Type, or a hot sedan such as the Dodge Charger Hellcat. But now I’m starting to see “hotted up” utility vehicles, which makes sense as SUVs represent the fastest-growing segment.

If you’ve followed me for long, you know my preference for cars and pickup trucks over everything else. Alas, the market shift means I’ve had to adjust and that requires testing an endless stream of crossovers and other people movers. Happily, manufacturers understand that some customers still want performance and, to its credit, Audi is accommodating our need for speed with the SQ5.

2018 Audi SQ5 Overview

Based on the compact Q5 utility vehicle, the 2018 Audi SQ5 represents the performance side of the model line. It is the only Audi SUV line with a performance variant, with the latest-generation model introduced for the 2018 model year.

The current version replaced the previous supercharger with a turbocharger, giving this model a noticeable boost in torque along with a slight improvement in fuel efficiency. This all-wheel-drive model is still powered by a 3.0-liter V6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

2018 Audi SQ5Like other Audi models, this one is available in three trims: Premium ($53,395), Premium Plus ($59,195), and Prestige ($63,095). Our prices are for the 2019 model as this is the one you’ll most likely find on dealer lots at press time. You’ll find various package options for further customization, depending on the trim.

For instance, the base model offers a Convenience Package ($1,500, keyless entry with push-button start, automatic dimming and power-folding side mirrors, driver’s memory seat, satellite radio, and Audi pre sense rear with side assist).

2018 Audi SQ5The middle Premium Plus and top Prestige trims offer an S Sport Package ($3,000, red brake calipers, sport adaptive air suspension, sport rear differential). Also, a Black Optic Package ($600, 20-inch Anthracite wheels, summer performance tires, matte black roof rails, titanium black exterior trim).

My Prestige test model had more than $8,000 in upgrades, including the S Sport Package, Driver Assistance Package ($1,800), Fine Nappa Leather Interior ($1,250), Dynamic Steering ($1,150), the 21-inch Wheel Package ($1,000) and Carbon Atlas inlays ($500). If I were to build one, I would start at the Premium Plus level. Then again, the Prestige trim brings in the banging audio system, the leather upgrade and the driver assistance package.

Design Highlights

Based on the crisp, elegant look of the Audi Q5, the SQ5 brings in its own styling elements. That said, the differences are not readily apparent, especially to those not familiar with the brand’s lineup.

Beginning with the front fascia, the SQ5 has standard high-intensity density headlights or available LED lights. LED lights also fashion the rear. Special alloy wheels set this model apart and exterior badging is also unique to this trim.

Inside, the changes are much more apparent, beginning with the fixed display screen on top of the center stack. In most other Audi models the screen retracts, while this one stays in place. This trim also comes with a three-spoke multifunction flat-bottom steering wheel with paddle shifters, diamond-stitched front sport seats, aluminum inlays, and aluminum touches.

As for passenger comfort, tall passengers may find the rear seating area small. It is most suitable for two passengers, not three.

Safety & Technology

Audi loads the SQ5 with top equipment, including a virtual cockpit, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, 4G LTE technology, and Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto smartphone integration. The cockpit display is a gem as it supplies a sport display mode, which brings the tachometer and speedometer to the front.

As for driver assistance systems, Audi includes adaptive cruise control, an automatic emergency braking system, side assist with blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and traffic jam assist. These are features which typically accompany top models such as the SQ5.

Performance Matters: 2018 Audi SQ5

The chief selling point for the Audi SQ5 is its performance. Sure, exterior and interior styling and amenities are important, as is technology and safety. But make no mistake about this: the only reason to consider the SQ5 over the standard Q5 is that you put a greater value on performance.

Happily, the 2018 SQ5 does not disappoint. In fact, it thrills — and for an SUV that’s no small matter.

To begin, the SQ5 has a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine with an output of 354 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. While horsepower stays the same for the current model, you’ll notice a 23 pound-feet improvement in torque. That’s what happens when you swap out the previous supercharger for a turbocharger.

Engage the ignition and a quiet rumble coarses through the SQ5’s body. Move the transmission into gear and step on the gas pedal, and the turbos quickly spool up. There is generous amounts of energy at hand and, thanks to low-end torque, it keeps on giving. Audi says this SUV runs the 0-60 mph sprint in about 5 seconds and that’s in line with what we experienced.

Weighted steering supplies the connectivity to the road you want. This SUV shines on the straightaway, delivering robust power and much more when needed. On curvy roads the SQ5 acquits itself as it hangs with every twist and turn. Yes, some body roll is evident — that’s to be expected with any high-profile vehicle. Happily, the rolls do little to negate the fun.

One nice touch with the SQ5 is the available rear mechanical limited-slip differential. It sends power to the outside wheels when cornering, which is what gives this SUV a planted feel. The air suspension system is another plus and it is adjustable. Here, ground clearance can lower to 7 inches from the standard 8.2 inches, for a closer connection to the road. Again, this is no sports car, but the performance elements are a welcome change.

Parting Thoughts: Audi SQ5

The list of Audi SQ5 competitors is quite small and includes such models as the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 and the Porsche Macan S. The latter is, of course, a Volkswagen Group model as is the Audi. You can also consider the Jaguar F-Pace S.

A performance SUV is a natural complement to Audi’s RS models. The SQ5 clearly demonstrates that a high profile and strong performance are not mutually exclusive. You’ll pay the price to acquire one, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone looking for a luxury, performance SUV.

At a Glance: 2019 Kia K900

The Kia K900 is one of the most improbable and unlikely models from a mainstream manufacturer.

Sophisticated and elegant, the 2019 Kia K900 seeks its own place in a niche segment.

Introduced in 2015, the K900 immediately gave Kia an entry in the niche full-size luxury sedan segment. That segment is occupied by the likes of the BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Jaguar XJ and the Audi A8L.

Sales of the K900 never accounted for much, so after three years it appeared Kia would pull this model from the U.S. market. Instead, the automaker skipped the 2018 model year and has an all-new sedan ready for 2019.

Yes, despite NBA superstar LeBron James serving as the K900 spokesman, Kia has only managed several hundred models sold each year. We’re not sure what Kia expects the 2019 K900 to do, but it is safe to say it will once again serve as the brand’s flagship model with distinction.

Here are details of the next-generation K900:

1. The K900’s overall dimensions are larger.

Forget downsizing! The 2019 Kia K900 is upsized slightly over the previous model. It is longer, wider and taller than the 2015-2017 version.

From wheel to wheel, this sedan measures 122.2 inches, up from 119.9 inches. From bumper to bumper, the increase is smaller. At 201.6 inches, the new model is one inch longer. Its width increased slightly to 75.4 inches from 74.8 inches. From a height perspective, the change is even smaller, increasing by just 0.2 inches to 58.7 inches.

The interior space appears to be roughly the same. We’re not sure what the trunk dimensions are for the new model, but we’re thinking they’ll come in better than the modest 15.9 cubic feet of the previous K900.

2. One engine is better than two.

The previous K900 came with two engine choices: a 3.8-liter V6 and a 5.0-liter V8. Both engines are gone, replaced by a single twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque.

Importantly, the new engine effectively splits the horsepower differences between the two previous engines, while matching the torque of the V8. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. Yes, all-wheel drive is now standard.

3. State-of-the-art technologies live here.

Kia Motors has long pushed its technology prowess through its UVO telematics system. The new Kia K900 demonstrates just how savvy this automaker is.

For starters, you’ll find a 12.3-inch Human Machine Interface (HMI) touch-screen. This system displays maps, trip details, audio information, manages climate control and oversees other details. Also, the K900 has a new navigation system. All these things tie in with a dedicated service representative reachable via a VIP phone line.

Other tech features include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, an available 9.7-inch head-up display, and a 17-speaker Harmon Kardon surround sound system.

Among the safety features you’ll find Kia’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which includes a surround view monitor that has four cameras that provide a 360-degree perspective. The Blind Spot View Monitor (BVM) supplies the driver with a live feed of the adjacent lanes in the instrument panel. The system kicks in with a flick of a turn signal.

Other advanced safety features include lane keep assist, forward collision avoidance assist, and driver attention warning. You’ll also find rear cross traffic avoidance alert, safe exit assist, lane follow assist and advanced smart cruise control. The latter system utilizes lane markings and radar-front vehicle information to keep the K900 centered and sufficiently behind the vehicle immediately in front.

4. Luxury beyond reproach.

The Kia K900 offers a high-level of luxury befitting a sedan of its class. Soft leathers cover the seats and wrap the interior. Wood trim choices include walnut, olive ash, beige olive ash and engineered wood.

Kia says the front seats are well contoured and designed to supply optimum support and comfort in an effort to reduce fatigue. In a nod to Korea’s history, the quilted leather at the shoulders point to the clothing worn by Korean kings of antiquity.

Key features include heated and ventilated seats up front. An available 20-way power driver’s seat comes with width-adjusting bolsters and lumbar support. The front passenger has a 12-way power seat. The rear seats have their own advantages as the one on the driver’s side offers 12-way adjustment and the one on the right side 14-way adjustment. Both seats have reclining capabilities. Heating and ventilation options are also available for the outboard rear seats.

5. Pricing to be determined.

We’ll update this page when pricing information becomes known. The previous model started at $49,900, plus a $950 destination fee. That model offered three trims: Premium V6, Luxury V6 and Luxury V8.

We think the new model will cost at least $55,000 based on the improvements in performance and content alone. That’s still $20,000 less than a Lexus LS which, by the way, is also now powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine.

Kia K900: Round Two

As unlikely that there was a K900 in the first place, introducing an all-new model is a bold move on Kia’s part. Likely, sales will remain slow, although the sedan could find its way into livery fleets. After all, the Lincoln Town Car is long retired and not every limousine is a full-size SUV.

Luxury meets value with the Genesis G80

The Genesis G80 is available in three trims. It has three engine choices and an automatic transmission.

Hyundai launched the Genesis luxury brand launched in 2016 with plans to steadily expand it to six models. Carved out of Hyundai, this marque is comprised of G70 (compact), G80 (midsize) and G90 (full-size) sedans. Two SUVs will soon follow; a third model of a not-yet-determined body style should arrive in 2021.

Genesis competes with a host of luxury brands, including Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. Its traditional rear-wheel-drive architecture gives it the right to take on the best models in the business.

Recently, a Genesis G80 sedan was delivered for my inspection. It is a model I’m very familiar with, both under the Genesis moniker and when it was marketed as the Hyundai Genesis. I’ve always liked this sedan, which is stylish, generously appointed and attainable.

2018 Genesis G80 Overview

The 2018 Genesis G80 seats five and comes with standard rear-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. This model has three engine choices — each one is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Pay a visit to the Genesis G80 splash page and you’ll find 10 trim choices for your consideration. In reality, there are three trims, with each one corresponding to the engine choice. Thus, the standard prices are as follows: 3.8 ($41,750); 3.3T or Sport ($55,250); and 5.0 ($57,000). Add $975 for the destination charge and another $2,500 for all-wheel drive.

The 3.8 is where the package options kick in. The Premium Package ($5,000) builds on the standard features, adding LED foglights, a power tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof, a Lexicon 14-speaker surround sound audio, a 7-inch color LCD multi-information display, wireless device charging (front) Qi standard, front and rear parking sensors, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power rear sunshade, and manual rear side window shades.

You can also upgrade to the Ultimate Package ($10,100), which builds on the standard trim and Premium Package. Here, you’ll find shift-by-wire, full LED headlights with dynamic bending light (DBL) technology, premium leather seating surfaces, a power driver seat cushion extender and side bolster, genuine matte-finish wood trim and aluminum trim, a heads-up display, a multi-view camera system, a 9.2” HD touchscreen, Lexicon 17-speaker surround sound audio, a power trunk lid, and a dual mode front vent control and CO2 Sensor.

Your Choice of Engines

Credit Genesis with giving the G80 three engine choices and very good ones at that.

2018 Genesis G80The standard engine displaces 3.8 liters, generating 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. It is also the most efficient one too, making 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. This one runs on regular gasoline.

A twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque is the second engine choice. Models equipped with this engine make 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway and take premium gasoline.

The third engine choice is the lone V8, which displaces 5.0 liters and has an output of 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The EPA-estimated fuel economy comes in at 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. You’ll fuel with premium gasoline too.

Equipped the Way You Want

Genesis is big on value and that’s evident by just how well this model is equipped. We’ll look at the three main trims and what you get with each one.

The G80’s roster of standard equipment is strong, beginning with the exterior.

2018 Genesis G80This model comes with Bi-Xenon HID headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRL), high beam assist, power-folding and heated dual side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, 18-inch alloy wheels and a hands-free open trunk.

Inside, the G80 has push-button start to go with keyless entry. This model also comes with a leather-wrapped and power-controlled tilt-and-telescopic steering column, leather seats, 12-way power front seats with dual automatic climate control, and an automatic-dimming rearview mirror. A drive mode select allows you to choose between normal, eco and sport modes.

Among tech features, the 2018 G80 includes a 7-speaker audio system with satellite radio and a CD player.

2018 Genesis G80Genesis also includes an 8-inch color touch-screen with navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, Bluetooth and two USB ports. Genesis also provides three years complimentary connected car services and three years SiriusXM Travel Link services.

Among safety tech you’ll find a rearview camera with parking guidelines, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and driver attention alert. Genesis also includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

2018 Genesis G80Besides the twin-turbo V6 engine, the Genesis G80 Sport adds such features as a panoramic power glass tilt and slide sunroof and a vehicle anti-theft system with engine mobilizer.

Inside, this trim has a power rear sunshade. All other tech and safety features remain the same.

The V8 engine is the most significant difference at this trim level. The other one is the addition of front fog lights.

On the Road

My test Genesis G80 3.8 with rear-wheel drive came with zero options. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t well equipped as noted above. It just means you can find a midsize luxury sedan in the low-$40,000 range and that alone is good news.

What you have with the standard model is a quiet, comfortable riding sedan. Step-off acceleration is adequate and passing power is satisfactory. The transmission is properly matched with this engine, shifting through cogs quickly with no hunting detected.

The steering is light to the touch with limited feedback. On twisty roads and when pulling out of corners, its lack of handling precision becomes evident. Not in a disturbing way, but as a matter of fact. And that fact is a sedan like the BMW 5 Series is still difficult to beat.

Hours of backcountry road traveling gave me a good feel for what the Genesis G80 is all about. It is not a corner carver, but it acquits itself everywhere else and that’s what customers expect in this segment. In the G80, Genesis found what most customers want and delivers it.

Parting Thoughts: Genesis G80

The 2018 Genesis G80 delivers solid value for the segment. A number of competing models start around $50,000 and usually offer a turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the base engine. The Audi A6, Cadillac CTS and Lexus GS are three such models that come to mind.

Notably, when comparing this model to the Lexus, there is a near $5,000 price difference between Genesis and Lexus and even then you’re comparing a V6 engine to a small turbo four. Choose the GS 350 F Sport and you’ll pay $52,260 or just over $10,000 more than the G80 for a V6 that also makes 311 horsepower. Sure, the Lexus has better handling, but in all other areas, these two sedans are nearly equal.

As for the model of your choosing, adding the Ultimate Package gives you a well-equipped sedan, one that is priced like the Lexus, but with more features. Here, you get the most bang for the buck, although if enhanced performance is important to you, then you’ll look at the two other engine choices instead.

If you’re shopping for a highly capable luxury sport utility vehicle, the 2018 Land Rover Discovery is certainly worth a look. This medium-to-large SUV offers strong engine choices and pairs them with an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, your cost can quickly climb, while smartphone compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is non-existent.

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery returns virtually unchanged from last year when the current model rolled out. The latest Discovery offers a fresh interpretation on a classic model.

2018 Land Rover Discovery Overview

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery is offered in three trims: SE ($52,090), HSE ($58,490) and HSE Luxury ($65,490). Add $995 for the destination charge. Add another $2,000 for the turbo-diesel engine.

Land Rover says the Discovery seats 5 + 2, an acknowledgment that the available third-row seat is best used as a jump seat. That seat does, however, accommodate adults, but with one important qualifier: short distance travel is just okay. Beyond that, save the seat for the youngsters, but only when needed.

The standard equipment list is robust as it includes such items as automatic halogen headlights, power-folding and heated side mirrors with approach lights, 19-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate and rear fog lamps. Inside, the Discovery SE comes with a tilt steering column, dual-zone climate control, a 10-speaker audio system, Bluetooth and a 10-inch touchscreen display. Grained leather seats and power-controlled front seats are also standard.

Move up to the HSE trim (my test model) and this one adds LED lights, front recovery hooks, garnishment improvements and an electric sunroof. Inside, the HSE has a power-adjustable steering column, upgraded wood trim, a 10-speaker Meridian audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, an interactive driver display and additional USB ports (second row).

The HSE Luxury adds heated windshield washer jets and front fog lights. Inside, the equipment roster includes ambient lighting, power-controlled third-row seats, Windsor leather, heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel.

Choose Your Engine

Manufacturers typically have an assortment of engines and transmissions available when designing a new vehicle. The pair forms a vehicle’s powertrain, delivering what many hope is the right combination of performance, fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and in the case of Land Rover, pulling power.

Happily, the choices for Discovery shoppers are quite good. The standard engine is a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine with 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. It is used in a variety of applications across the Jaguar Land Rover universe with modest increases in horsepower, torque or both evident in some models. Land Rover pairs this engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The second engine is a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 with 254 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. It also works alongside an eight-speed automatic transmission. There are a few things worth noting about this engine, beginning with its quietness. Indeed, I didn’t look at the supplied documentation before getting behind the wheel of the Discovery and only discovered it was powered by a diesel once I began my driving. Yes, it is that quiet.

The diesel also has ample low-end grunt and supplies a 5 mpg fuel economy advantage over the gas burner. Certainly, the upgrade will cost you more upfront, but the advantages in power, towing, fuel efficiency and maintenance outweigh the cost, especially if you plan to keep your Discovery for many years.

The Discovery along with the BMW X5 are the only models in the segment still offering diesels. Competitors such as the Lexus GX, Audi Q7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class do not. If you’re concerned about higher diesel prices you should know that each of these models require premium gasoline, which costs nearly the same as diesel fuel.

Take the Discovery Offroad

Land Rover long ago discovered the confluence of on-road comfort and off-road prowess. It has only gotten better in both departments since the new models arrived on the scene over these past few years.

Each vehicle is quiet, rides very comfortably and looks great around town. Pull up to any venue and your Land Rover gets noticed.

But it is this model’s off-road chops that many buyers may not fully appreciate. Indeed, most will simply not go off-road, although the capabilities are most definitely there.

The current model utilizes unibody construction, which isn’t always appreciated for its off-road capabilities. However, manufacturers such as Jeep (Grand Cherokee) have found that they can build a unibody model that looks great around town while taking it to the off-road less traveled. In brief, unibody construction ensures improved body rigidity and handling over traditional body-on-frame SUVs.

The key beyond body build is, of course, four-wheel drive. In this case, Land Rover has such a system in place, including a low-range transfer case. The standard suspension system features a traditional coil-spring arrangement.

Typically, though, Land Rover supplies an air suspension system for our review. Here, the system adds 1.7 inches of lift to the Discovery’s noteworthy 11 inches of ground clearance. All told this enhanced SUV gains improved approach, breakover and departure angles, along with improved wading depth. You’ll opt for this system if you’re serious about off-roading.

Taking the Discovery off-road means utilizing its Terrain Response dial to tackle the kind of obstacle you’ll be facing. This computer-controlled system adjusts the height, the center differential lock and optional rear locker, manages throttle control intervention and adjusts throttle response. Keep an eye on the instrument panel as it renders cool scientific-like graphs to go with these changes.

Let’s Examine Technology

In our earlier overview, we looked at some of the tech features offered by Land Rover in the 2018 Discovery. No doubt, you’ll find a nice selection of audio systems, including Meridian.

2018 Land Rover DiscoveryWe like that Land Rover is also up on nearly everything else, including Bluetooth, USB ports and its own InControl infotainment system.

Naturally, the one void that gets noticed is Land Rover’s lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Neither is available as Land Rover’s focus is on its own InControl suite. JLR isn’t alone in not offering either system with any of its models. Mazda, Toyota and Lexus are also holdouts. One reason we’ve heard about the lack of smartphone compatibility has to do with maintaining proprietary information. If the automaker believes a third party might access confidential information about drivers or their technology, then that hesitancy is understood.

As for Land Rover, you can still use their navigation system to get you places. The InControl interface is fairly easy to use. The standard “Touch” system features an 8-inch touch-screen with intuitive touch and swiper controls. Opt for Touch Pro and the 10-inch touchscreen allows pinch-to-zoom gestures, which are ideal for controlling maps, media and settings. Voice recognition is added to this level as well. Some models include Touch Pro Duo, which brings in a second screen for controlling multiple features together.

Parting Thoughts: 2018 Land Rover Discovery

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery brings luxury, style and performance to the segment, and adds an element of off-road prowess that sets it apart from the competition. Most Land Rover buyers won’t be taking their SUVs off-roading, however. But if having that feature available if and when you need it is important to you, then it is hard to beat the Discovery at its game.
