The recent arrival of an Audi Q5 TDI Quattro in my drive marked the third of three crossover utility vehicles I’ve received from this German luxury manufacturer within the past year.

The exquisite seven-passenger Q7 arrived first, what serves the full-size end of the segment. Later in the year, an all-new five-passenger Q3 arrived, an elegant vehicle designed for compact luxury CUV shoppers. But it was the five-passenger Q5 that provided me with the best week of driving thrills, by virtue of the 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 diesel engine powering its medium frame.

Quattro Meets Turbodiesel

The 2015 Audi Q5 comes with standard all-wheel drive Quattro; only the smaller Q3 offers with either front- or all-wheel drive. As I have adroitly enumerated in my previous write ups, all-wheel drive is the superior choice — not just for on-road traction, but for optimum steering and handling. Think “quattro” and you have a permanent all-wheel drive system — one that is always at work. In some other vehicles, all-wheel drive only kicks in as you need it. Yes, there is a difference, one best articulated in every twist, turn, rise and fall of the pavement.

The advantage of the Audi Q5 depends principally on how you examine it.

First, it seats five people just like the smaller Q3, but more comfortably so. I like to think that Q3 buyers acquire one to serve two people or perhaps two parents with their young children in car seats. Beyond that, rear legroom will have you feeling pinched, especially as the children grow.

Second, it offers the same larger engines as the Q7 as well as the four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine found in the Q3. Audi, in its infinite wisdom, only offers the larger V-6 diesel in the Q5. And that’s where the fun begins!

But first, let’s look at what you receive in the 2015 Audi Q5. This model is available in three trim levels: Premium ($39,300), Premium Plus ($42,200) and Prestige ($52,900). Select the Premium edition and the four-cylinder, turbocharged gasoline engine is your solitary choice. All three engine choices, including the “four” and a pair of turbocharged diesel and gasoline V-6 engines, are available with the Premium Plus. The Prestige offers only the larger engines.

My weekly driver was powered by the turbodiesel V-6 and outfitted with all-wheel drive; it had a base sticker price of $47,000. Its total price came in at $55,625, due chiefly to a $4,000 technology package and a $2,300 luxury package. A savory Bang & Olufsen sound system added $850 — that’s one upgrade I strongly recommend.

Uniform Style Language

Across the Q3-Q5-Q7 triumvirate, the styling is constant, although there are some differences. The overall design composition is uniform, with the waterfall grilles on the Q3 and Q5 making for the closest match. Audi’s latest LED daytime running lights arrangement has those lights completely encompassing the lighting assemblies front and back.

The Audi Q5 has a graceful persona with a flowing look that extends from the grille, up the hood line, across the windshield and roof line, and down the liftgate. Not especially muscular, yet athletic, the Q5 moves lithely like a ballerina until a sudden kick tells you that it means business.

And that business is symptomatic to the turbodiesel, what produces 240 horsepower and a whopping 420 foot-pounds of torque. Its twist kicks in early and low in the rpm curve, providing an extra boost before you expect it. Be prepared here: you may find yourself tooling down the interstate entrance ramp at a cop-car-pull-me-over speed.

Audi pairs the Q5’s engines with an eight-speed tiptronic transmission. You will operate it in automatic mode much of the time, but if clutchless shifting is your fixation, then have at it. Personally, I want the real deal — give me a true manual gearbox and the attendant clutch pedal — maybe not in a utility vehicle, but definitely in a sport sedan or coupe.

With a utility vehicle, you will also have at least some pitching and rolling as you navigate the twists and turns. The Audi Q5 makes short work of it all as it hugs the corners and navigates its turns with authority. No, you are not driving a low-slung sport coupe, but you are accessing one crossover that has fun factored in. Just be certain that the kiddies are tightly buckled in back there!

Polished, Luxuriant Cabin

Inside, you enjoy the anticipated Audi craftsmanship that this brand exemplifies. And with an uncluttered dashboard at that.

The instrument panel features two large analog displays —odometer and speedometer — and two much smaller analog displays for oil pressure and fuel. Strategically centered is the digital driver’s information center, what you control with a steering-wheel mounted switch.

The center console has the requisite display and, notably, Audi seems to be moving away from the unit that either was fixed to the top of the instrument panel or quickly emerged once the ignition was activated. No matter, the look is a clean one, with orange and white lettering on the blackest of backgrounds. You govern the panel with a knob situated between the seats.

Underneath the display are vents, a multimedia system and switches for the climate control system, including heating and cooling switches for the front seats.

Connectivity Issues and an App

Audi still does not make it easy to connect some smartphones for recharging purposes. Specifically, you must have the correct cable connection, but that just does not work out for me. However that may change as Audi, new for 2015, released an “Audi MMI connect App” to sync directly with the available MMI navigation system. For example, the app ties in with the owner’s myAudi account to stream music, to help you find where your car is parked and provide destination support. Given that I do not have an account, I did not test it.

I have yet to meet an Audi that failed on the fit and finish front — each model is a mark of impeccable craftsmanship, with a tasteful fusion of authentic dark brown wood inlays, chic aluminum trim, Milano leather seating and choice soft touch materials. Drive this model at night and the interior is peppered with red highlights —easy on the eyes, but enchanting nonetheless.

Audi provides a crossover that comes well equipped. Every model is outfitted with three-zone climate control, power accessories, a tilt and telescopic steering column, a rear cargo cover, four 12-volt outlets, ambient lighting, leather touches and four cup holders and four bottle holders.

Move up to the Premium Plus and procure keyless entry and push button start and stop, heated front seats and a panoramic sunroof. The Prestige edition extends the luxury quotient to its zenith by bringing in adaptive xenon plus headlights, LED daytime running lights and tail lamps, MMI navigation, manual rear sunshades, parking assist and a rear view camera.

Additional Crossover Considerations

Beyond the Q triad, Audi does offer other crossovers for your consideration, including a hybrid variant of this very same Q5. Yet another variant, the SQ5, brings optimum performance to the line with the specialized styling befitting a sport edition. Consequently, you may find yourself wrestling with your choices as nearly every utility vehicle niche has been filled by Audi.

Looking Back: The Best of 2014 Auto Trends

Sixty models came and went in 2014. Those 60 represented my weekly drivers, an array of utility vehicles, coupes, sedans, sports cars, pickup trucks and vans that I had the pleasure (or misfortune) of driving. All joking aside, even the most sedate of the fleet models usually had something to offer, typically excellent fuel efficiency and a low price.

I am often asked, “what is your favorite car?” Honestly, I do not have one. Generally, however, there are two types of conveyances that stir my heart, if not raise my blood pressure: 4x4s and rear-wheel drive performance models.

And by 4x4s I don’t mean crossover utility vehicles. Instead, they should be traditional body-on-frame models such as the now-retired Toyota FJ Cruiser, what provide the most fun. If I can safely take it off road, enter and exit a mud slough without drama, and keep the frame intact, then I am golden.

Rear-wheel drive models always stoke my interest. Pair a naturally-aspirated V-6 or larger engine with a manual transmission, and my “happy quotient” will have been met. Add in a sport-tuned suspension, exceptional handling characteristics and a cat-back exhaust, and you will peg my “thrills and chills” meter. Moreover, I will also do my best to find a police-free circuit to open her up — don’t ask me any questions, because I’m not about to tell you.

Automaker Expansion Continues Apace

I only drive a small number of vehicles compared to the hundreds of models manufacturers serve up these days. Personally, I am amazed at how automakers continue to expand model lines. Certainly, if I have difficulty keeping up with the latest and the greatest, then the average driver will find it nearly impossible to do so as well.

Several brands entered my press fleet rotation in 2014 for the first time. They were: Kia, Mazda, LandRover, Jaguar and Volvo. For 2015, I hope to add Mercedes-Benz, Honda and Acura, as well as drive additional Mazda and Kia models. GM, Toyota, Nissan, Fiat Chrysler and Subaru are well represented. I am currently working on driving more Ford and Lincoln products. In addition, I would drive Mitsubishi, Tesla and, of course, Porsche models if and when these were offered to me.

New Arrivals for 2016

Given that this site is “Auto Trends” and that I write for three or four other periodicals throughout the year, I keep pace with industry happenings by attending press events and auto shows, and by interviewing various movers and shakers in the automotive realm. For that reason, among the upcoming models that have my piqued my interest include the Cadillac CT6, Chevrolet Camaro, Nissan Maxima, Jaguar XE, Infiniti Q60 Coupe and the BMW X1.

Also on the horizon is an all-new Chrysler Town & Country minivan, the BMW M2, the next generation of both the Ford Focus and the Ford Super Duty, an updated Honda Odyssey, as well as a Volkswagen model that is based on the CrossBlue concept.

This Q3 is yet another new model from Audi.

Consolidation or Collaboration: Who and What?

I also anticipate that some major industry revelation will be disseminated this year to advance collaboration or consolidation between select manufacturers.

Fiat Chrysler (FCA) has a weak presence in Asia and could very well liaise with Mazda, perhaps even Suzuki. The Volkswagen Group might make for an effective global partner, but do not rule out GM, Ford or some other manufacturer demonstrating interest in FCA. On the other hand, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai-Kia seem prepared to maintain the status quo and most likely will eschew formal partnerships. At least for the near future.

US auto sales may top 17 million units in 2015, but an overheated stock market is due for a significant correction. Once that happens the sales momentum would cease and the streak of year-over-year increases would abruptly and forcefully come to an end.

Small crossover extends Audi’s product range.

Audi’s product expansion continues, its latest vehicle a compact crossover utility vehicle designed to serve as another gateway model to the brand. The 2015 Audi Q3 joins larger Q5 and Q7 crossovers, and is itself a five-passenger vehicle retailing from $32,500. The Q3’s competitive price point, generous standard equipment and its expected Audi refinement should ensure this model’s success.

Our weekly driver was a Audi Q3 Premium Plus, quattro ($34,600), one of four editions available. The base Premium Plus and Prestige ($36,400) front-wheel drive models as well as a Prestige, quattro edition ($38,500) can also be had. Quattro is Audi’s all-wheel drive system; all models carry an additional $925 delivery charge.

The Audi Q3, although new to North America, has been sold in Europe for the past few years. It shares its platform with the outgoing Volkswagen Golf, but don’t allow that to alarm you: this model combines Audi refinement with a very good drive within a skin of its own.

That skin, by the way, includes the expected Audi face with its bold grille, Xenon plus headlamps and signature LED daytime running lamps. Those headlamps are standard across the model line, what serve to cast a brighter and wider angle of light as you drive. I’ve become a fan of such advanced lighting systems especially when I navigate dark country roads and want to spot deer before they make their suicide run across my path.

The Q3 offers a firm stance and is marked by what Audi calls a “coupe-like” design. I can’t agree with Audi on this point — although the roof does slope back slightly, it doesn’t have the same dramatic flair of another Volkswagen Group product, namely the VW CC. What it does have are distinctive, sporty wraparound LED tail lamps and reflector lamps. Its dual exhaust tips are placed together and located on the driver’s side of the vehicle. This vehicle also comes equipped with standard roof rails, a tail gate spoiler in addition to front and rear fog lamps.

Audi on a Small Scale

Inside, you have a compact cabin that avoids the clutter in typical Audi fashion. LED interior lighting is standard and you get other amenities with every Q3 model such as: keyless ignition, leather seats, a 12-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, a three-spoke tilt and telescopic steering wheel, dual zone climate control, automatic wipers, a panoramic sunroof with sunshade, power accessories, automatic wipers, cruise control and eight drink holders.

Audi outfits the Q3 with a 10-speaker sound system, a CD player, MP3 playback, a music interface, Bluetooth connectivity and an SD card slot. What it doesn’t offer is a USB port — instead, if you have the right smart phone you may be able to connect with one of the provided cables. In my own eyes I had the “right” phone, but the proper connection was not provided. It is time for Audi to make connectivity points that make sense!

An advanced voice-controlled navigation system is a $1,900 upgrade with the Audi Q3. It includes high-definition radio, a CD/DVD player and a color information display. Unlike other Audis, this one is fixed in place. It does not emerge from the dashboard and it cannot disappear out of view. Those “deficiencies” may be attributed to the dashboard’s small size.

The Q3’s instrument panel features analog tachometer and speedometer displays that flank a digital driver’s information system. The center stack is arranged from top to bottom as follows: navigation screen, vents, audio system, traction control and hill descent switches, climate control and a slot to hold your smartphone. The transmission shifter is placed just before the cup holders, parking brake and a 12-volt outlet. A small, covered storage compartment doubles as an armrest.

Make That Room for Two

Although there are three seat belts in the rear seat, you’d be hard pressed to squeeze more than two people back there. This becomes especially challenging if one of those outboard seats is reserved for a car seat as the seat would infringe upon the middle position. It would be better to have the center arm rest folded down and the cup holders opened to make good use of that position.

The Audi Q3 will likely interest upwardly mobile 20-something individuals and couples — you can keep the crossover when you have your first child, but the small rear storage compartment (16.7 cubic feet) will limit the amount of kiddie stuff you can bring with you unless you fold down part of the rear seat. Fold down the entire rear seat and your storage capacity nearly triples.

On the Road

Say “crossover” to most any car buyer and they’ll expect the usual high-profile, family-tamed model. Fortunately in the Audi Q3 we have a vehicle that rides and drives closer to a sedan than to a utility vehicle. That is, if you select one with quattro all-wheel drive.

The Q3’s composure and agility will have you smiling. You can fully appreciate its capabilities by tackling curvy roads, especially on hillier terrain where the pavement rises and falls. Quattro’s exceptional grip imbues confidence as power is delivered to where it is most needed. Try finding that in any front-wheel drive crossover and you won’t. Even most other systems just don’t match what Audi delivers. By now, you can tell that I routinely urge people to take the all-wheel drive option when it is available with most any front-wheel drive model. Especially when selecting an Audi.

The fun can be ramped up by turning off traction control as you weave your way on the road. Step on the accelerator and the turbo four is quickly activated, serving up a brisk start that continually delivers power as you push up to highway speeds and beyond. Passing is easy too — there is no lack of power as you push down the road.

Strong Competition

Currently, there is no diesel option available with the Audi Q3. It seems likely, though, that the 2.0-liter turbo diesel found elsewhere, as in the A3, will eventually be made available. That would be good news as the Audi Q3 gasoline edition is rated 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway and takes premium fuel. An estimated 35 percent boost in fuel economy would help the Q3 shine, particularly in a fast growing segment.

The Audi Q3 has several competitors that you will want to cross shop. These include: the BMW X1, Lincoln MKC, Volvo XC60 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. If the luxury label isn’t important to you, then the Subaru Forester, Buick Encore and the Volkswagen Tiguan might also be considered.
