AUDI Q7

The Innovative 2019 Audi Q8

September 5, 2019 by admin 4 Comments

The available HD Matrix-design LED headlights with full LED taillights
supplies the Q8 with a stunning presence.

The Audi Q8 is the latest utility vehicle from the premium German brand, one of seven SUVs and wagons available. It sits on the same wheelbase as the three-row Q7, but it is three inches shorter overall. Supplying room for five, this all-wheel-drive SUV is also a mild hybrid, thanks to its 48-volt electrical system.

Audi Q8 Trims

But the two-row Q8 isn’t simply a derivative of the Q7. Instead, what we have here is a clean-sheet design marked by an oversized grille, strong shoulders, a coupe-like roofline, and beautiful exterior lighting elements. One powertrain combination is offered and the usual three Audi trims — Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige — are available. The 2019 Q8 is priced from $67,400 to $76,550, plus a $995 destination charge.

Your final cost can go much higher, though, especially if you choose the Adaptive Chassis Package ($2,750), Luxury Package ($5,950), Night Vision Assistant with Large Animal and Pedestrian Detection Package ($2,500), and a Bang & Olufsen 3D Advanced Sound System ($5,000). Further, by adding a special “Year One” Package (S Line trim, black optic exterior kit, 22-inch anthracite wheels) with red brake calipers ($2,250 + $400), and your final cost will push past $96,000.

The Q8’s profile is sporty and powerful.

Interior Ambiance and Amenities

So, with a sloping roofline, rear-seat headspace is comprised, right? Thankfully, it is not. What helps here is the position of the seat, which is just ahead of the deepest slope. At the same time, there is still ample legroom along with generous shoulder and hip room. Three-across-seating is entirely possible and comfortable.

Of course, the best seats in the Q8 are upfront. There, you’ll find thickly padded and supportive bucket seats. The leather seats are available in four color choices with contrasting stitching. The black dashboard and black carpeting are contrasted by a gray headliner. Decorative wood inlays of fine gray ash, eucalyptus, and gray oak add visual appeal.

The list of standard cabin features includes a sport steering wheel, three-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, heated 8-way front seats with power lumbar support, and full power accessories. Among the upgrades are various leathers with front ventilation and massage. Heated outboard rear seats and a heated steering wheel are also available.

The stacked center console screens are easy to ride and respond quickly to commands.

Let’s Go Virtual

One of the strong suits for the all-new Q8 is its virtual cockpit, which features a large digital display. Gone are the traditional analog gauges, but they’re not missed. Instead, the bright instrument panel is visually stunning, interesting, and easy to change.

But that’s not the only electronic interface of note. Indeed, the digital display is only surpassed by the beautiful dual-screen infotainment system with its pristine graphics and rapid response. Audi also got rid of the rotary controller as a new dual touch-screen interface with haptic and audible control gets it done. The system outperforms anything the competition offers and that’s a big thing.

While the virtual cockpit and infotainment system receive plaudits, there are other noteworthy tech features. To begin, the surround-view camera system is wonderful with its real-time 3D model of the Q8. The system uses four wide-angle cameras on the outside of the Q8 to project images on the display panel. Not only that, but you can toggle around the vehicle and zoom in — the latter is especially helpful when backing into a very tight area you might otherwise avoid.

The standard audio system is comprised of 10 speakers, satellite and HD Radio, multiple USB ports, and Bluetooth. You’ll also enjoy Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity. A navigation system is standard.

Audi also offers a pair of Bang & Olufsen audio systems, depending on the model and package chosen. The first one has 17 speakers, the second one has 23 speakers and nearly triples the wattage output of the first one. Qi wireless charging is optional.

Driving Assistance Features

Manufacturers continue to up their safety credibility, especially with driver assistance features. Audi kicks things off with automatic headlights and wipers. You’ll also find the Audi “pre sense basic and city,” which monitors traffic in front of the vehicle and issues collision warning and light braking. The system also detects cornering and stationary vehicles and pedestrians at speeds no higher than 52 mpg, warning the driver of an imminent collision.

If you want more safety tech you’ll find it through trim upgrades and package options. The expected items such as side assist, lane assist, traffic sign recognition, intersection assist, and adaptive cruise assist. A delicious full-color head-up display is also available.

Three-across seating with ample headroom in the rear.

Power, With Light Hybrid Assist

Under the hood is a new 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged V6 engine, which features a revised Audi valve lift system and the turbocharger placed directly inside the engine’s V configuration. With a rating of 335 horsepower and 369 foot-pounds of torque, this SUV sprints from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds. An eight-speed automatic transmission supplies rapid, yet smooth shifts and includes steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles.

Also at work is a 48-volt battery system, which includes a small lithium-ion battery found underneath the second-row seat. The system includes a belt alternator starter. When braking, the tech recovers some of that power and feeds it to the battery. The 48-volt system works alongside a 12-volt arrangement.

Despite its relatively laudable performance numbers, the Q8’s 5,000-pound footprint soon becomes apparent. The engine must work hard to move this SUV, which affects fuel mileage. Indeed, the EPA estimates are a combined 19 mpg, which was about what we experienced. The Q8 isn’t as sporty as some might like, although its multiple drive modes and the available adaptive suspension system make a positive difference.

If you’re in a towing state of mind, you may find the 7,700 towing capacity suitable for your needs. This figure is on the higher end of the towing scale, matching or bettering such models as the Land Rover Range Rover Sport and the Mercedes-Benz GLE.

There is ample storage space behind the second-row seat.
Fold the seat down and the capacity doubles.

Auto Trends Recommends

We like the Audi Q8 and think customers will be happy in whatever guise they choose. It checks off all the important boxes in a luxury vehicle and surprises with its digital display and infotainment system.

Expect to pay at least $80,000 to acquire one, especially after all upgrades and packages are considered. That may seem like a steep price, but you’re getting so much more than you might expect.

Indeed, the Q8 is the most modern of all Audis and even makes the three-row Q7 seem ready for its interior overhaul. Thus, you’re getting a vehicle that not only raises the bar, but shows us what will eventually filter down to many other Audi models.

Audi Q7: Benchmark for the Luxury Set

February 18, 2019 by admin

2019 Audi Q7.
2019 Audi Q7.

The SUV craze is in full swing and it is almost hard to remember when cars were once the dominant body style. But consumers are voting with their wallets and utility vehicles as well as those that manufacturer them — they are the winners.

Audi has built SUVs since 2005 when the Q7 went on sale. Since then, the German luxury marque has added several more model lines, including performance variants and the brand’s first all-electric model.

The first-generation Q7 spans the 2006 to 2015 model years, while the current model arrived in 2017. There was no 2016 model.

2019 Audi Q7 Overview

Audi offers the 2019 Q7 in Premium ($53,550), Premium Plus ($56,900), and Prestige ($68,700) trims. Add $995 for the destination charge. All models come with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive. Upgrade to the supercharged V6 and add $6,400 to your cost. You’ll also find multiple package options across the Q7 range.

For 2019, integrated navigation is standard across the model line. The available Convenience Package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The middle-tier Premium Plus model gains standard LED headlights, wireless charging and Audi’s nifty Virtual Cockpit.

2019 Audi Q7.

A Matter of Design

The Audi Q7 has always served as the design benchmark for the brand’s widening portfolio of utility vehicles. Its bold grille and sleek lighting elements offer a nice contrast to the profile with its pretty sheet metal, subdued curves and gently falling roofline. Even the rear view doesn’t do much to stand out like the front. Wraparound tail lamps with LED accent lights, rear fog lights, and dual exhaust ports are noteworthy elements.

Inside, the cabin is large, but not huge by any stretch. The first two rows supply ample room for five adults. The last row is best used by youngsters. We found the VW Atlas offers better access and more room in the third row than the Q7, but these vehicles are not the same.

Audi never disappoints in the fit and finish as well as the quality of materials used to outfit its cabins. The driving position is adjustable, comfortable and offers excellent sight lines. Knobs and switches are clearly laid out and the feel is upscale. Fine leathers dress the cabin with beautiful inlays completing the look.

As for cargo space, this is the Q7’s most significant weakness. The standard space is quite small and is only large enough to house a few packages side by side. Even with the seats folded, competing models simply offer more room.

2019 Audi Q7

Safety & Technology

Generally, the Audi Q7 meets stringent crashworthiness standards. The only demerit identified by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) is the standard headlights. That’s not unusual as the IIHS continues to raise the bar in all things lighting. In any case, when you move beyond the base model with its Xenon headlights, you’ll find full LED headlights.

Beyond a suite of airbags and the usual stability and traction control technologies, you’ll find a rearview camera with the standard Q7. To get such features a side assist and rear cross-traffic assist, you’ll upgrade to the Convenience Package on the base model. A Driver Assist Package becomes available on the middle trim and adds such features as high beam assist, active lane assist, collision avoidance assist, and adaptive cruise control. The available all-wheel steering shows up on the top trim’s Adaptive Chassis Package.

As for infotainment and technology, the Audi Q7 has a 10-speaker audio system with a CD player and MP3 playback capability. You’ll also find Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto smartphone compatibility, two USB ports, and navigation. Upgrades include a 19-speaker Bose audio system or a Bang & Olufsen 3D Advanced Sound System. Other available features include wireless charging and a head-up display.

On the Road

Audi offers a pair of gasoline engine choices to motivate the Q7. All models come with a standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Upgrading to the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 delivers 325 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Both engines send power to all four wheels by means of an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Step-off acceleration is good with the base engine and great with the V6. The turbos kick in with very little acceleration, while the supercharger bangs out power from the onset. On the open road, the gap between the two engine choices closes as the turbo delivers generous wide-open power.
2019 Audi Q7

Regardless of engine choice, the Q7 supplies agile steering, confident handling, and a comfortable ride. The standard all-wheel-drive system supplies a strong edge here and works best in Dynamic mode where faster reflexes and superior roll control is at work. The transmission does its part by serving up the right gear for the moment. In any case, Audi’s system delivers 40 percent of its power to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear wheels under standard conditions. When the “quattro” all-wheel-drive system detects changes in grip, as much as 70 percent of the power shifts to the front wheels or up to 85 percent to the rear wheels.

Auto Trends Recommends

Don’t immediately dismiss the turbocharged four-cylinder engine if you’re considering the Q7. We’ve driven with it in a variety of applications, including in the A6 sedan. This engine offers more than adequate power and should perform likewise in the Q7.

That said, if you routinely carry a full contingent of passengers and related gear, then upgrading to the supercharged V6 is certainly an option. A $6,400 cost increase at that. Regardless, we think the base model is a fine place to begin your search. Upgrades to consider include Convenience ($850), Cold Weather ($750), and Towing ($650) packages, bringing your final price to $63,195.

Swank SUV: 2017 Audi Q7

July 11, 2017 by admin 3 Comments

Audi presents the latest iteration of its largest SUV.

2017 Audi Q7
The 2017 Audi Q7.

The second-generation Audi Q7 has arrived, bringing with it a more car-like look. At first glance, you may see a tall wagon as Audi lowered the hood and relaxed the roofline. Inch for inch, the dimensional changes are minimal for Audi’s largest SUV. The first-generation model lasted from 2007 to 2015; Audi skipped the 2016 model year.

As before, the Audi 2017 Q7 comes in Premium ($49,000), Premium Plus ($53,000), and Prestige ($65,400) trims along with two gasoline engine choices: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder or a 3.0-liter supercharged V6. Both engines come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting capabilities.

Gone is the turbo-diesel, vanquished following the Volkswagen Group’s diesel debacle that uncovered emissions cheating followed by billions of dollars in fines and buybacks. For a while, Audi pushed to have the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel certified, but that now seems unlikely.

My test model was the Premium Plus with the base engine. Opting for the V6 is a $6,500 upgrade for the first two trims, but this engine comes with the Prestige grade.

Options included a vision package ($2,000) bringing in a virtual cockpit, full LED headlights, and a top view camera system. Also added were 19-inch five v-spoke aluminum wheels ($1,000), cold weather package — heated steering wheel and heated front seats ($500), rear side airbags ($350), and high gloss black and terra brown walnut wood inlays ($350). With a $950 destination charge, the final price came in at $58,725. All told, that’s about $20,000 less than the Land Rover Discovery I had a month earlier.

2017 Audi Q7

Exterior Overview

Standard equipment includes Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights, power adjustable and power-folding heated side mirrors, LED taillights, and rear fog lights. All models come with aluminum roof rails, a power tailgate, and rear privacy glass. Audi offers a choice of three 18-inch wheel designs.

Package and trim-level upgrades raise the luxury and design quotient, adding such features as running boards, 20-inch wheels set within all-season run-flat tires, power soft-closing doors, and integrated twin-trapezoidal exhaust outlets.

Interior Highlights

The Audi Q7 offers a 2+3+2 seating arrangement with ample room for the first two rows, but narrow space in the third row. The second-row seats move and tilt forward sufficiently, but that back row is best suited for two youngsters.

2017 Audi Q7Most of the time you’ll want the third row seat, resting inside the floor to take advantage of the 37.5 cubic feet of storage space (14.8 cubic feet behind the third-row seat and 71.6 cubic feet behind the first row).

Audi interiors are beautiful — handsomely designed with high-end materials throughout. The workmanship is top notch — what’s especially evident is the careful attention to driver control placement and to the way the telematics system functions.

Leather covers the seats, the door inlays, wraps the steering wheel and graces the top of the shift knob.

Standard equipment includes stainless steel door sill inlays, ambient LED lighting, a tilt and telescopic steering column, three-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof with a power sunshade, and 10 beverage holders. You’ll find very comfortable power front seats with heating elements.

Upgrades swap out the cloth headliner with a Black Alcantara headliner, individually contoured front seats with ventilation, Valcona leather, four-zone climate control, a power-folding third-row seat, and extended LED ambient lighting.
2017 Audi Q7

On the Road

Audi provides a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 252 horsepower and 273 foot-pounds of torque. And if that isn’t enough power, you can upgrade to a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 generating 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

My test model had the smaller engine and it quickly became apparent when I stepped on the gas pedal. This fairly sizable SUV pulls away from a dead stop with deliberation, cranking out more power once the turbo spools up. However, even when fully engaged the engine just didn’t seem to provide enough power to correspond with the size of the SUV. Had I driven with a full contingent of passengers, I might have found the experience lethargic.

Manufacturers are putting smaller engines under the hood in an effort to boost fuel economy. Consequently, there is a corresponding decline in power even with forced induction. If considering the Audi Q7 as your family vehicle, pony up the extra bucks to get the supercharged V6. Comparatively, the larger engine distributes full power from the onset and in a far greater amount — 32 percent more than the junior engine.

Although the base engine may fall short of expectations, nothing else about the Q7’s ride and drive disappoints. Indeed, all models come equipped with Audi’s prestigious Quattro all-wheel drive system, renowned for its strong handling attributes. This SUV’s sight lines are quite good, the ride is comfortable, and steering is light to the touch. As always, you can dial in the level of feedback received through the MMI screen — comfort, auto, dynamic, and individual. Choose the mode based on your driving preferences — the suspension, transmission, and engine settings adjust accordingly.

Safety and Technology Features

The 2017 Audi Q7 is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick.

This SUV excelled in all five crash testing criteria — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints & seats. In front crash protection the Q7 garnered a superior score.

The Q7 comes with the usual contingent of safety features, including a suite of airbags and brake assist.

2017 Audi Q7
Overhead console in the Audi Q7.

A driver assistance package ($2,400) brings in adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and high beam assist.

Audi is synonymous with technology and that’s evident across the model line. Driver-assist technologies are a big deal these days and Audi rises to the occasion.

At speeds up to 52 mph, “Audi pre sense city” identifies cornering and stationary vehicles and pedestrians, and delivers full braking when a collision is certain. Available pre sense plus extends that limit to 137 mph and includes collision warning and emergency braking. Other available features include rear cross traffic alert, vehicle exit assist, turn assist, collision avoidance assist, stop and go and traffic jam assist, and adaptive cruise control.

All models have Audi’s MMI scroll wheel feature, what controls the touchscreen. Available navigation, Audi Connect with 4G LTE internet, and a 10-speaker audio system with a CD player and MP playback are additional highlights. Buyers may upgrade to a 19-speaker Bose or to a Bang & Olufsen 3D advanced sound system ($5,000).

I’m a fan of Audi’s telematics system. In the Q7, the screen emerges from the top of the dash and cants towards the driver. The black background with orange and white lettering is easy to read. The Google maps street view interface is quite detailed, revealing building outlines in addition to streets, parks, and other landmarks.

Audi also provides an “all-in-touch” multimedia interface co-developed with Preh. Instead of pressing a button for MMI functionality, sensors and actuators “read” your commands. Navigation, telephone and multimedia input control is at the ready in this unique hub.

2017 Audi Q7

Parting Thoughts

The all-new Q7 provides a more wagon-like departure from the previous SUV. Its bold face, elegant lines, and dramatic sculpting add flair and distinction, while its interior is as close to perfection for five passengers as anything else on the market.

Yes, you can squeeze two youngsters in the third row, but that comes at much sacriffice to storage capacity.

It is hard to say what the take rate will be on one engine versus the other, but if you put a premium on performance, only the supercharged V6 will suffice.

Choose the Premium Plus with the V6 ($60,400) and include the driver assistance and vision packages and you’ll come away with a well-equipped model for about $66,000 — that’s easily within the range of other luxury models in this segment.

Turbo CUV: 2015 Audi Q5 TDI Quattro

February 6, 2015 by admin 3 Comments

Medium range crossover combines performance with efficiency.

2015 Audi Q5

The recent arrival of an Audi Q5 TDI Quattro in my drive marked the third of three crossover utility vehicles I’ve received from this German luxury manufacturer within the past year.

The exquisite seven-passenger Q7 arrived first, what serves the full-size end of the segment. Later in the year, an all-new five-passenger Q3 arrived, an elegant vehicle designed for compact luxury CUV shoppers. But it was the five-passenger Q5 that provided me with the best week of driving thrills, by virtue of the 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 diesel engine powering its medium frame.

Quattro Meets Turbodiesel

The 2015 Audi Q5 comes with standard all-wheel drive Quattro; only the smaller Q3 offers with either front- or all-wheel drive. As I have adroitly enumerated in my previous write ups, all-wheel drive is the superior choice — not just for on-road traction, but for optimum steering and handling. Think “quattro” and you have a permanent all-wheel drive system — one that is always at work. In some other vehicles, all-wheel drive only kicks in as you need it. Yes, there is a difference, one best articulated in every twist, turn, rise and fall of the pavement.

The advantage of the Audi Q5 depends principally on how you examine it.

First, it seats five people just like the smaller Q3, but more comfortably so. I like to think that Q3 buyers acquire one to serve two people or perhaps two parents with their young children in car seats. Beyond that, rear legroom will have you feeling pinched, especially as the children grow.

Second, it offers the same larger engines as the Q7 as well as the four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine found in the Q3. Audi, in its infinite wisdom, only offers the larger V-6 diesel in the Q5. And that’s where the fun begins!

2015 Audi Q5

But first, let’s look at what you receive in the 2015 Audi Q5. This model is available in three trim levels: Premium ($39,300), Premium Plus ($42,200) and Prestige ($52,900). Select the Premium edition and the four-cylinder, turbocharged gasoline engine is your solitary choice. All three engine choices, including the “four” and a pair of turbocharged diesel and gasoline V-6 engines, are available with the Premium Plus. The Prestige offers only the larger engines.

My weekly driver was powered by the turbodiesel V-6 and outfitted with all-wheel drive; it had a base sticker price of $47,000. Its total price came in at $55,625, due chiefly to a $4,000 technology package and a $2,300 luxury package. A savory Bang & Olufsen sound system added $850 — that’s one upgrade I strongly recommend.

Uniform Style Language

Across the Q3-Q5-Q7 triumvirate, the styling is constant, although there are some differences. The overall design composition is uniform, with the waterfall grilles on the Q3 and Q5 making for the closest match. Audi’s latest LED daytime running lights arrangement has those lights completely encompassing the lighting assemblies front and back.

The Audi Q5 has a graceful persona with a flowing look that extends from the grille, up the hood line, across the windshield and roof line, and down the liftgate. Not especially muscular, yet athletic, the Q5 moves lithely like a ballerina until a sudden kick tells you that it means business.

2015 Audi Q5
2015 Audi Q5

And that business is symptomatic to the turbodiesel, what produces 240 horsepower and a whopping 420 foot-pounds of torque. Its twist kicks in early and low in the rpm curve, providing an extra boost before you expect it. Be prepared here: you may find yourself tooling down the interstate entrance ramp at a cop-car-pull-me-over speed.

Audi pairs the Q5’s engines with an eight-speed tiptronic transmission. You will operate it in automatic mode much of the time, but if clutchless shifting is your fixation, then have at it. Personally, I want the real deal — give me a true manual gearbox and the attendant clutch pedal — maybe not in a utility vehicle, but definitely in a sport sedan or coupe.

With a utility vehicle, you will also have at least some pitching and rolling as you navigate the twists and turns. The Audi Q5 makes short work of it all as it hugs the corners and navigates its turns with authority. No, you are not driving a low-slung sport coupe, but you are accessing one crossover that has fun factored in. Just be certain that the kiddies are tightly buckled in back there!

2015 Audi Q5

Polished, Luxuriant Cabin

Inside, you enjoy the anticipated Audi craftsmanship that this brand exemplifies. And with an uncluttered dashboard at that.

The instrument panel features two large analog displays —odometer and speedometer — and two much smaller analog displays for oil pressure and fuel. Strategically centered is the digital driver’s information center, what you control with a steering-wheel mounted switch.

The center console has the requisite display and, notably, Audi seems to be moving away from the unit that either was fixed to the top of the instrument panel or quickly emerged once the ignition was activated. No matter, the look is a clean one, with orange and white lettering on the blackest of backgrounds. You govern the panel with a knob situated between the seats.

Underneath the display are vents, a multimedia system and switches for the climate control system, including heating and cooling switches for the front seats.

Connectivity Issues and an App

Audi still does not make it easy to connect some smartphones for recharging purposes. Specifically, you must have the correct cable connection, but that just does not work out for me. However that may change as Audi, new for 2015, released an “Audi MMI connect App” to sync directly with the available MMI navigation system. For example, the app ties in with the owner’s myAudi account to stream music, to help you find where your car is parked and provide destination support. Given that I do not have an account, I did not test it.

I have yet to meet an Audi that failed on the fit and finish front — each model is a mark of impeccable craftsmanship, with a tasteful fusion of authentic dark brown wood inlays, chic aluminum trim, Milano leather seating and choice soft touch materials. Drive this model at night and the interior is peppered with red highlights —easy on the eyes, but enchanting nonetheless.

Audi provides a crossover that comes well equipped. Every model is outfitted with three-zone climate control, power accessories, a tilt and telescopic steering column, a rear cargo cover, four 12-volt outlets, ambient lighting, leather touches and four cup holders and four bottle holders.

Move up to the Premium Plus and procure keyless entry and push button start and stop, heated front seats and a panoramic sunroof. The Prestige edition extends the luxury quotient to its zenith by bringing in adaptive xenon plus headlights, LED daytime running lights and tail lamps, MMI navigation, manual rear sunshades, parking assist and a rear view camera.

Additional Crossover Considerations

Beyond the Q triad, Audi does offer other crossovers for your consideration, including a hybrid variant of this very same Q5. Yet another variant, the SQ5, brings optimum performance to the line with the specialized styling befitting a sport edition. Consequently, you may find yourself wrestling with your choices as nearly every utility vehicle niche has been filled by Audi.

10 Must See Models at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show

December 25, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Just as the Rose Bowl is the Granddaddy of all the bowl games, the North American International Auto Show has similar prestige amongst the major automotive shows across the continent. The Detroit auto show isn’t the oldest, but its proximity to the heart of America’s automotive industry makes it the most important of all shows. For 2015, the NAIAS will feature numerous new models, including the following 10 you must see.

2016 Acura NSX.
Tease us please: 2016 Acura NSX.

1. Acura NSX. Whether you call it a sportscar or a super car probably doesn’t matter. The 2016 Acura NSX will be the most advanced and expensive car ever released by American Honda. This two-seater will feature a hybrid drivetrain, with a twin turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine and electric motors powering the car. Importantly, global production for this long-awaited second generation model will take place in Marysville, Ohio, demonstrating Honda’s continued confidence in its American workforce.

2. Toyota Tacoma. It has been a decade since Toyota introduced the current generation of its popular Tacoma pickup truck. Refreshes made since then have kept this truck the segment leader amongst midsize models, but with two new models from GM now in the mix, it is time for a new truck. Toyota has been mum on what we’ll see with the 2016 Tacoma, offering a teaser photo to show us that “Tacoma” will be stamped on its tailgate much in the same way as seen on the larger Tundra.

3. Cadillac CTS-V. Cadillac sales are down for the year in a segment where sales are outpacing the industry. GM’s luxury brand has been remaking itself, by bringing new models to the market. V-Series is Cadillac’s performance line and the CTS is its midsize sedan. Put the two together and you have the makings of the most powerful production model ever built by GM, making 640 horsepower and 630 foot-pounds of torque thanks to its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine. This sport sedan’s top speed is 201 mph for a model that should see much track time.

4. Nissan Titan. Nissan introduced its first full-size pickup truck for the 2004 model year. Unfortunately, the Nissan Titan has not been updated since. Full-size pickup trucks fans, however, will find a 2016 model on display at the 2015 Detroit auto show. Not much is known about the upcoming model, except that a first-ever diesel option will be offered. That motor will come from Cummins, the long-time supplier of a turbo diesel for Ram trucks.

A small hint of the 2016 Nissan Titan.

5. Chevrolet Volt. Pity GM, Nissan and other manufacturers that are investing so much money in bringing electrified vehicles to the market. The second-generation Chevrolet Volt will be on display in Detroit, a sedan that will receive an all-new propulsion system along with an enhanced battery system. It will be interesting to see what changes GM makes to its hybrid electric vehicle. It will also be interesting to see how sales hold up as gas prices drop to as low as $2 per gallon.

6. Audi Q7. Audi introduced its largest crossover utility vehicle for the 2007 model year. Engine updates and other changes have kept this model relevant, but it is time for an all-new Q7 to emerge. The 2016 Audi Q7 will come in lighter and 26 percent more efficient according to the automaker. Two turbocharged engines — one diesel, the other gasoline — both displacing at 3.0 liters will be available. Audi promises several technological updates, including 3D audio.

7. Mercedes-Benz AMG line. Sorry, Mercedes-Benz fans: your all-new AMG models have already been revealed. What’s the problem with that? Nothing, really. Mercedes will showcase its AMG C-Class and GLE Coupe in Detroit, the first two models in the all-new Mercedes-AMG Sport Line. Essentially, with the new models the German automaker inserts an AMG Sport line, providing a step between the AMG Sports package for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and its classic AMG models.

8. Ford Performance. Earlier this month, Ford announced the creation of its Ford Performance division. That division unites Ford Racing, Team RS and Ford SVT under one umbrella. From that division will come at least a dozen new models through 2020, with several models expected to debut at the Detroit auto show. Ford hasn’t named those models yet, but we’re expecting both the Focus RS and the F-150 Raptor to debut. Rumors of a resurrected GT super car have not been confirmed.

9. Lexus F Model. Toyota’s luxury brand, Lexus, has successfully battled Mercedes-Benz and BMW for high net-worth customers. Where they’ve lagged is in performance vehicles, but that’s likely to change. Mercedes-Benz has AMG and BMW has its M line. The high performance F brand is from Lexus and we’ve already seen the delicious RC F. A second model will debut in Detroit, a track-ready sports car Lexus has recently been teasing. Not much is known about the new model, so look for a big reveal at the NAIAS to tell all.

10. Mini Cooper JCW. A Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop will debut in Detroit, powered by a twin turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. According to parent BMW, the new model has already dropped cover, but some details remain, including its price. The latest JCW should make 238 horsepower, providing even more distance between this model and its competitors. The new model will be outfitted with a JCW aerodynamics kit, a Brembo sports brake system and light alloy wheels.

Detroit: North American International Auto Show

The public days for the NAIAS will run from Jan. 17 to 25, 2015. The Detroit auto show is located at the newly refurbished Cobo Center downtown, with shops, restaurants and hotels nearby.
