About the 2015 Chevrolet Trax

March 9, 2015 by admin 3 Comments

The subcompact sport utility vehicle segment is expanding rapidly as new products from Honda, Fiat, Jeep and Mazda enter the fray. Joining the current Buick Encore and Nissan Juke is another small SUV, the Chevrolet Trax, a five-passenger model that gives the bow-tie brand its fifth utility vehicle.

The 2015 Chevrolet Trax is just now entering showrooms, the third crossover and fifth overall utility vehicle for GM’s headmost brand. The Trax arrives just as the subcompact SUV segment receives an infusion of new products, including the Honda HR-V and the Fiat 500X.

Pricing Essentials and Strategy

The Chevrolet Trax is based on the Buick Encore, a premium model with the price and content to go with it. To effectively compete in a segment where a base price of $20,000 will be common, GM established a $20,120 base price for the Trax or $20,995 once the delivery charge is included.

This front-wheel-drive model is also available in all-wheel drive and is sold in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels. All-wheel drive adds $1,500 to the price. Chevrolet says that the Trax has the utility of an SUV and the agility of a compact car. Likely, that statement is true because it aligns with my impressions of the similar Buick Encore. Stay tuned for a hands-on review once one passes through my press fleet rotation.

For a small vehicle, there is a lot to discuss beyond its standard 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Indeed, its standard Chevrolet MyLine infotainment system, 7-inch diagonal screen, Wi-Fi hotspot, standard rear view camera, and standard 10 airbags should pique the interest of the intrepid shopper.

2015 Chevrolet Trax

Room for Five; Compartments Galore

Technically, the Chevrolet Trax seats five, but is best suited for four. Its 60-40 spilt, flat-folding rear seat and fold-flat front passenger seat to enable owners to maximize storage space. Chevrolet is quick to note that the Trax’ storage space eclipses the Nissan Juke and is in line with competitors, such as the Jeep Renegade and Kia’s Soul. By extension, you can associate the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen with this segment, a wagon-like model with its own utility vehicle inclinations.

SUVs typically have multiple storage compartments, including a sundry of nooks, crannies and crevices. The Chevrolet Trax does not disappoint in this department as it has 15 of them, including one to the left of the steering wheel and a pair encompassing the center stack. Furthermore, double slots in all four doors run up that tally nicely.

One technological feature that is sure to please beyond the Wi-Fi hotspot is Siri Eyes. Siri Eyes Free works with compatible iPhones and like devices to augment connectivity, through voice control. Specifically, drivers can keep their phones stored and their hands on the wheel, effectively eliminating a distraction point. To point out, Chevrolet will be the only subcompact SUV to offer this feature.

A Profusion of Safety Components

Speaking of safety, the Chevrolet Trax comes with driver and front passenger knee airbags as well as the segment’s only rear-seat-mounted thorax airbags. Furthermore, the expected and mandated safety features common to all vehicles — such as anti-lock brakes, stability control, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist — are present. This model also comes with cornering brake control; rear park assist is standard on the LTZ edition and is available with the LT.

Will buyers make the trek to the Chevy Trax? That’s no slam dunk considering the competition that is also reaching the segment now and in the coming months. At the same time, the Trax will have some in-house competition from the Buick Encore while some buyers may simply prefer the capaciousness of the Equinox, the previous of the smallest utility vehicles in the Chevrolet portfolio.

Beastly Elegance: 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali

March 4, 2014 by admin 8 Comments

Driven: 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab 4WD Denali

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali.
The imposing, yet elegant GMC Sierra 1500 Denali.

If there is one word that explains why GM kept GMC and ditched Pontiac, that word would be Denali. Denali (or Mount McKinley) is the highest mountain peak in North America. It also represents the pinnacle GMC trim level, for the most luxury found in any GM vehicle line this side of Cadillac.

While the Denali line and its high profit margins rendered low-profit Pontiac pointless, it also forced competing brands to respond with high-end crew cab pickup trucks of their own. Namely, we now have the Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn, Ford’s F-150 King Ranch, and the Toyota Tundra 1794 edition. Even the similar Chevrolet Silverado now has the High Country — a high-lux, country-themed appeasement for long envious Chevy dealers. It isn’t a Denali, but it comes in close.

The take rate on high-end pickup trucks is small, but when the purchase is done the profits range from $10,000 to $15,000 per vehicle, well above the average $7,000 profit for large pickup trucks. Denali is available in Sierra regular- and heavy-duty pickup trucks as well as across GMC’s utility vehicle line: Terrain, Acadia, Yukon, and Yukon XL. When the smaller Canyon pickup truck returns this year, likely a Denali edition will eventually follow.

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali

A 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab 4WD Denali was dropped off in my driveway one late February afternoon, finished in Onyx Black and generously clad in the chrome bling that defines the Denali. Standard Sierra crew cab models are priced from $49,410 for the short bed and $49,710 for the standard bed.

The Denali trim pushes the Sierra’s base price to $52,560. Choose the largest available V-8 engine, a power sunroof, a rear seat entertainment package, a tonneau cover, plus the dealer-installed four-inch chromed tubular round assist steps, and your fully-optioned 44 bling machine will retail for above $60,000. The good news here is that you have much room to negotiate your final price, knocking $5,000 or more off of it without much effort and perhaps as much as $10,000 if you insist on a price closer to what the dealer paid for the truck.

For 2014, GM brought out the latest generation of its full-size pickup trucks. The changes were evolutionary, not revolutionary with the Sierra’s three engines updated to produce improved performance and trailering capabilities while yielding slightly better fuel economy.

2014 GMC Sierra Denali Crew Cab
GMC provides two bed size choices with the Denali.

Updated Engine Line

The trio of EcoTec3 engines have been outfitted with direct fuel injection, cylinder deactivation, and variable valve timing technologies, enabling all three to keep pace with competing models. A 4.8-liter V-8 was dropped for 2014; a 4.3-liter V-6 is standard on base models with 5.3- and 6.2-liter V-8 engines available. All pickup truck engines are coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission.

For the Denali line, your choice of engines is the standard small-block V-8 or the beefier 6.2-liter V-8. As tested, the supplied Denali was powered by the smaller engine, making 355 horsepower, up from 315-hp for the previous generation. Torque has also benefited, rising from 335 foot-pounds to 383 pound-feet. The new or updated technologies along with aerodynamic improvements have yielded the power increase while also providing a slight uptick in fuel economy.

The small-block V-8 worked as expected, delivering excellent response through a variety of driving conditions. With no more than four people riding in it at one time including the driver and nothing to tow, I cannot say whether the larger V-8 would be highly desirable, except for an ever so slight edge in trailering capacity: 11,800 pounds versus 11,200 pounds. Its 420-hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque ratings are not easily dismissed, however.

2014 GMC Sierra Denali Crew Cab
The Denali’s drive system controls are to the left of the instrument panel.

High-End Cabin

Beyond the exterior bling, the area where the Denali really shines (pun intended) is right inside the cabin. GMC calls it professional grade luxury but you may just as likely grasp how its designers took a luxury sedans sophistication and applied it to a crew cab.

Let’s start with the seats: you get perforated nuance leather-appointed seating with French-stitching, what provides a rich look and a comfortable ride. For the driver and the front passenger, the bucket seats are extra wide, heated, and cooled, offering 12-way power adjustment. Combine that with the tilt and telescopic steering wheel and there is a driving position for everyone. Add in the heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and your comfort quotient climbs another notch. The rear passengers are supplied with a plush bench seat fold it down in sections or together to store goods on top or make use of the space underneath the seats to do the same.

The Denali’s cabin is quiet with triple door seals blocking outside noise. GMC uses real aluminum trim through the cabin and provides a soft-touch instrument panel. The center stack is uncluttered, marked by a touchscreen color display with traditional switches and knobs underneath.

GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Elevates the Segment

View manufacturer details and pricing

The GMC Intellilink system is one of the better ones in the industry fairly easy to use and with a clean design. Shift into backup gear and the standard rearview camera with guidelines and warning beeps helps the driver maneuver the big pickup truck into the tightest spaces. New for 2014 is a seven-speaker Bose audio system with a subwoofer. It provides a sound befitting the Denali class.

Besides its standard 5-foot, 8-inch bed (a 6-foot, 6-inch bed is optional), in-cabin storage is excellent with the Denali. You get in-door storage pockets with bottle holders, cup holders, an oversized glove box with a second storage compartment located above that, seatback pockets, and a pair of oversized front center console storage compartments one open, the other closed. That enclosed second compartment is large enough to hold hanging folders. What I would like to see is a refrigeration option maybe a removable refrigerator compartment for campers and picnickers alike.

2014 GMC Sierra Denali Crew Cab
The Denali’s seats are as plush and supportive as they come.

Ride and Safety

The latest Denali benefits from several other big pickup truck improvements that has spread across the GMC and Chevrolet lines. Steering, suspension, and brakes have been revised for improved ride and handling. Luxury car features such as forward collision alert and lane departure warning are standard. You also get the same safety alert seat found in Cadillac models, what vibrates the driver’s seat to alert you to potential hazards. This last feature is unnerving at first, but I found myself getting used to it the longer I drove. You may soon find yourself understanding what each vibration means: a left or a right vibration signifies a lane shift in the direction of the vibration, while a full-on vibration denotes forward collision alert. I’m guessing GMs engineers dismissed the idea of a full seat vibration from the headrest to the thigh what might be mistaken for electrocution.

Besides its safety features, there isn’t a moment when I felt unsafe in the Denali. I credit its mass with giving me that confidence plus it intimidating features the massive chrome grille flanked by projector beam headlamps and signature LED daytime running lights says, I’m elegant. It also says, don’t mess with me. People see this blinged-out big black truck coming and move out the way. You don’t need to be a jerk about it, but you should understand that proportion plus an abundance of chrome means you’re driving the cream of the pickup truck set.

To keep your Denali serviced right, GMC provides two years of scheduled service and maintenance to go with its 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and 5-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Roadside assistance and courtesy transportation is also included for five years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

2014 Infiniti QX70
The Infiniti FX37 becomes the QX70.

Youngsters the world over are fascinated with LEGO toys, those colorful, inter-locking plastic bricks that can be crafted into virtually any design. My two sons are no exception, so when my oldest boy found out about a show featuring LEGO artist, Nathan Sawaya, being held in Alamance County, NC, we took to the road. What better way to combine a father-son outing with a road trip leading to a car review, right?

Infiniti QX70

And the vehicle being tested was none other than the 2014 Infiniti QX70, a five-passenger rear-wheel drive SUV with a new name affixed to a proven design. That proven design had graced the FX37 and the FX50 through 2013, but Infiniti decided to change its naming convention to create model uniformity. Honestly, it is a bold effort that may backfire as not just once did I, the intrepid automotive journalist, screw up the name. If the people that know the industry make some slips, what about everyone else?

Brick LoveBut, it isn’t naming conventions nor LEGO bricks that were examining. Rather, it is a medium-sized sport utility vehicle that competes with the likes of BMW, Cadillac, Lexus and others for customers affections. The standard model, what was delivered for testing, is powered by a 3.7-liter, 24-valve engine. This engine makes 325 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 267 foot-pounds of torque at 5,200 rpm.

It is paired with a seven-speed automatic overdrive transmission with manual shifting capabilities. No paddle shifters are present, rather you can move through the seven forward gears by flicking the transmission stick toward the front of the SUV. Consider it Infinitis nod to those of us who read rear-wheel drive and think, spirited drive. Clutch-free shifting is common with such models, although this writer prefers the three-pedal workout.

You can get the Infiniti QX70 in all-wheel drive too, with that option making it possible to upgrade to a 5.0-liter V-8 engine making 390 horsepower. A word of advice: the V-6 bangs out ample power. Choose the V-8 if you need its 3,500-pound towing capabilities.

Change That Name

If you are familiar with Infiniti, you would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between last years FX and this years QX70. The badging is different with no engine size incorporated in the name. Instead, Infiniti sticks a 3.7 badge adjacent to the side ventiports, the only obvious indication of what engine size you have. Lift the hood if you need to confirm!

Infiniti’s design is masculine, with a bold grille accentuating its face. That grille is flanked by flared headlamps and is offset by a sporty cowl, itself flanked by fog lights. Its rugged hood, strong shoulders and creased profile give this vehicle an intimidating look. Every model is outfitted with a rear spoiler, wrap-around tail lamps, and alloy wheels set within all-season tires.

Uncluttered, Elegant Interior

Inside, the Infiniti QX70 features plush, leather seating with bolstered buckets seats up front and a split-bench seat in the rear. The front seats adjust in a variety of directions up, down, forward and back and have a heating and cooling element. The rear seat provides room for three, with the center position partially obstructed by the driveline hump. It isn’t so pronounced that the middle position is uncomfortable for local trips, but perhaps a bother on family vacations. So, stick your youngest in the middle and give him a lollipop for his cooperation.

Infiniti is to be commended for keeping its instrument panel and dashboard as uncluttered as possible. Leather, chrome and maple wood trim are used liberally throughout the cabin, but there is no overwhelming display of technological distractions fending for your attention. As equipped, the premium package features a large, colorful navigation screen with touch point, voice or button/switch access available. Easy to use, intuitive and the navigation voice lady is pleasant and not too talkative.

You also get keyless entry with push button start, an 11-speaker Bose audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, a rear view camera, a power sliding moonroof, dual zone climate control, power accessories, four 12-volt power outlets, a power liftgate and a tonneau cover. That tonneau cover protects a 25 cubic foot storage compartment, coming in smaller than what some competitors have to offer.

A Beastly SUV with Sporting Credentials

View manufacturer details and pricing

On the Road

Exterior and interior looks aside, the Infiniti QX70 lives up to the challenge on the road. Its rear-wheel drive architecture is certainly welcome with a front, independent double-wishbone suspension and a rear, independent multi-link suspension with stabilizer bars at work. Speed adjusted power steering, ventilated disc brakes at all four corners and four channel ABS are also present.

From the line, the Infiniti QX70 quickly shifts you through the gears in about six seconds, a clear indication that this SUV shares its architecture with the sporty 370Z. It is a pleasantly enjoyable discovery when you put it through the paces, leaving you wondering just how much more bang the V-8 offers? Then again, you may very well find that the 3.7-liter engine alone more than meets your expectations, perhaps surprisingly so.

Let Go of My LEGO

Sometimes I find it odd how unrelated things in our lives are connected. My son prizes LEGO for its versatility and the fun to assemble bricks that can make some amazingly cool figures, including a few displayed here. His dad appreciates versatility in the vehicles he drives especially when a performance component is included. Sure, the Infiniti QX70 may fall short in some utility aspects, but its sportiness is a carefully crafted design that both brick builders and automotive enthusiasts can appreciate.

Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid Tech Specs

April 1, 2013 by Samantha Rose Leave a Comment

Subaru XV Crosstrek
Subaru’s XV Crosstrek is the brand’s first hybrid model.

Subaru is a late arrival to the hybrid market, one of the last car manufacturers to serve up a gas-electric vehicle. Its lateness should not be a reflection of a lack of innovative capabilities as Subaru is a leader in both all-wheel-drive and gasoline four cylinder engine technologies. The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid closes the product line gap for this Japanese automaker, representing the most fuel efficient and cleanest vehicle of its kind in the United States.

Efficient Hybrid Powertrain

The Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a BOXER design engineered to reduce internal friction. A 13.4-horsepower electric motor is integrated with a continuously variable transmission, a powertrain that is lightweight, powerful and efficient. The 16-valve BOXER engine makes 148 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 145 foot-pounds of torque at 4,200 rpm.

This four-door hatchback seats five and has been aerodynamically enhanced to improve fuel efficiency. An active grille shutter system kicks in at highway speeds, ensuring that wind drag is reduced accordingly. Every model is outfitted with 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels shod within all-season tires.

Subaru says that the electric motor provides vehicle acceleration, with the gasoline engine kicking in once underway. The electric motor will work in parallel with BOXER engine at times or alone when the EV mode is chosen to manage low-speed driving. Its hybrid system is based on a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack, located under the rear storage compartment.

XV Crosstrek Hybrid Dimensions

The XV Crosstrek Hybrid sits on a 103.7-inch wheelbase and measures 175.2 inches long by 70.1 inches wide by 63.6 inches tall. Ground clearance is 8.7 inches, front and rear track measure an even 60 inches.

A roomy interior offers ample head, leg, hip and shoulder room. Total interior volume measures 97.5 cubic feet. Its standard cargo room is 21.5 cubic feet, extended to 50.2 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down.

Front head room measures 39.8 inches to 37.7 inches in the rear. Front leg room comes in at 43.5 inches to 35.4 inches in the rear. Hip room is 52.2 inches up front and 53.1 inches in the back. Shoulder room is 55.6 inches in the front seat and 54.2 inches in the back seat.

Subaru Fuel Economy

EPA estimated fuel economy is 28 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, the best among all-wheel-drive SUVs.

A 13.7-gallon fuel tank provides 466 miles of driving range, or more than enough fuel to take you from Milwaukee to St. Louis on one tank of regular grade gasoline.

Subaru Handling Attributes

Every Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid is equipped with an active torque split version of the brands symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. This arrangement sends power to all four wheels concurrently, adjusting torque distribution in response to road conditions. Its the same arrangement found in gasoline-only versions, demonstrating that Subaru has worked diligently to ensure that the driving experience is not diminished because of vehicle hybridization.

Subaru’s all-new hybrid is scheduled to arrive in dealer showrooms during the fourth quarter of 2013. Its competition includes the Ford C-MAX as well as various small people movers from Toyota such as the Prius V wagon.

The History of the GMC Terrain

November 3, 2011 by admin 1 Comment

Small crossover is big on amenities.

GMC Terrain offers a more chiseled exterior
than its Chevrolet cousin.

Among compact SUV nameplates, the 5-passenger GMC Terrain is one of the newest on the market, introduced for the 2010 model year. Available in front- and all-wheel-drive, this spacious crossover is related to the Chevrolet Equinox and shares its platform, powertrain choices and many other features. Its look and feel is all GMC, with the brand’s trademark grill and trim levels. Two engines choices and standard 6-speed automatic transmissions makes this roomy crossover one worth your consideration.

2.4-liter Inline-four Engine

Standard engine for the GMC Terrain is an ECOTEC 2.4-liter (145 cubic inches) double overhead cam engine that is rated at 182-horsepower at 6,700 rpm and produces 172 foot-pounds of torque at 4,900 rpm. This engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, enabling the FWD Terrain to achieve 22 mpg city, 32 mpg highway. When equipped with AWD, this Terrain is rated at 20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. This engine consumes regular gasoline or E85 fuel. Its 16-valve double overheard cam engine features spark ignition direct injection, variable valve technology and is of cast aluminum construction. The compression ratio for this engine is 11.2-to-1.

3.0-liter V-6 Engine

Optionally, a 24-valve double overhead cam 3.0-liter (183 cubic inches) engine is available and is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The larger engine, rated at 264-horsepower at 6,950 rpm and producing 222 foot-pounds of torque at 5,100 rpm, is of sand-cast aluminum with cast-in bore liners and has cast aluminum cylinder heads. Featuring direct sequential fuel injection with electronic throttle control, the V-6 engine achieves an EPA rating of 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway with the FWD model. With the AWD Terrain, the EPA rates this model 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway. Like the base engine, the V-6 runs on regular gasoline or an ethanol blend. The compression ratio for this engine is 11.7-to-1.

Dimensions

If it is room that you seek, the GMC Terrain like its Chevrolet cousin, does not disappoint. This vehicle sits on a 112.5-inch wheelbase and is 185.3 inches long, 72.8 inches wide and 66.3 inches tall. Interior passenger volume is 99.6 cubic feet. Standard cargo space is 31.6 cubic feet behind the rear seat, expanded to 63.9 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. Weighing approximately two tons, this vehicle has a standard towing capacity of 1,500 pounds to a maximum of 3,500 pound when equipped with the V-6 engine and trailer towing package.

Highlights

Like all GMC products, trim levels are different from comparable Chevrolet products. For 2012, the GMC Terrain offers a new audio system, featuring an AM/FM/SiriusXM stereo with CD player and MP3 playback capability. This vehicle offers a 7-inch touch-screen Color Interface Display, USB port, Radio Data System, speed compensated volume, auxiliary input jack and outside temperature display standard. Bluetooth connectivity; power windows, doors and mirrors; a tilt and telescopic steering wheel; a theft deterrent system; OnStar; a rear vision camera; daytime running lamps and fog lamps are among the many standard features offered across the Terrain model line.
