Style Maker: The All-New Nissan Versa

April 29, 2020 by admin 4 Comments

The all-new Versa offers its own take on the brand’s “V Motion” grille.

With three new Nissan car models in just over a year, you might think the segment is poised to rebound. It likely isn’t, especially as sales of crossovers and trucks remain strong. Of course, we’re imagining what the market will look like once the present COVID-19 crisis is behind us.

Apparently, Nissan is taking a wider approach to the market, by doubling down on cars while updating its other models. The car pie may be shrinking, but for the remaining players there are enough sedan shoppers around to keep the market viable.

After rolling out an all-new midsize Altima sedan in 2019, Nissan has done likewise with the subcompact Versa and the compact Sentra, the latter reviewed here. It’s a clean-sheet overhaul for the Versa, which is now a sedan-only model. Gone is the previous Versa Note hatchback. If you’re looking for utility, the small Nissan Kicks and Rogue Sport crossovers fill the void.

2020 Nissan Versa Review

Nissan offers the 2020 Versa in three trims: S ($16,400), SV ($17,640), and SR ($18,240). There is also a basic S version with a manual transmission retailing for $14,730. Add $925 to all trims for the destination and handling charge.

Certain color choices cost $395 more, including the monarch orange metallic of our test model. The available package is reserved for the top-trim SR model. There are also various accessory packages available, including lighting, electronics, floor maps, and trunk carpeting, which are installed at the dealership.

A profile view of the 2020 Nissan Sentra. Behind it is the “Franklin Male Academy Building” on the grounds of Louisburg College in Franklin County, NC. The college was chartered in 1787 and remains the only two-year (junior) residential college in the state.

Exterior

Nissan’s design language continues to evolve, as expected. What’s noticeable about the new Versa is that it takes elements from the brand’s largest sedans – Altima and Maxima – and includes them. One noticeable feature is this model’s grille design, what Nissan calls “V Motion” to underscore its shape. In the Versa it isn’t as strongly apparent as it is in the Sentra, but it’s still evident.

Owing to its smaller footprint, the Versa has a stubby hood and rear deck. Between the wheels you’ll find a strong door-handle-level character line, a rising beltline, and in the top trim a floating roof. Details such as the shark-fin antenna, LED lighting, and fashionable wheels suggest a more expensive model.

The standard equipment includes a chrome grille, halogen headlights, automatic lights, 15-inch steel wheels, and dual power outside mirrors. Upgrading brings in the LED lights, fog lights, aluminum alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, and a rear spoiler.

Interior

We won’t say the Versa seats five even with seatbelt placements for that many occupants. Ideally, it is a four-seater with ample room up front and tight quarters in the rear. If you’re tall and consigned to the rear seat, you better hope the front passengers do not have their seats pushed back.

Nissan employs soft-touch materials and plastics throughout the cabin. The dashboard is sculpted and layered, making for a pleasing design. Nissan places the display panel in the lower dashboard just above the center console. We liked the large open storage compartment at the base of the console and that’s where your cell phone sits.

Our test model featured a leather-wrapped steering wheel, piano black trim, and sport cloth seats with orange stitching. The front seats are adequately padded and offer fair support for long trips. The covered storage compartment between the front seats doubles as an armrest. It is small, deep, and features a USB port. We like that the front doors have wide pockets, suitable for holding drink bottles.

The rear 60/40 split fold-down bench seat doesn’t offer a center fold-down armrest. It isn’t as thickly padded as we would prefer, but it does offer ample room for two. What’s especially welcome is the near 15 cubic feet of trunk storage space – that’s larger than most cars in the segment and matches what some midsize models offer.

Among the standard features for the 2020 Versa are full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, air conditioning, and cloth seats. The list of upgrades includes heated front seats, upgraded cloth options, and leather touchpoints.

Technology

On the tech front, Nissan supplies the Versa with a 7-inch touch-screen display, three USB ports, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, and four speakers.

Some models come with a six-speaker audio system with satellite radio and include Nissan Connect apps. This represents a basic offering but it is far better than what we saw a decade ago.

Safety

Nissan supplies every Versa model with several driver-assist technologies, including high-beam assist, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and rear automatic braking. We’ve seen the latter feature offered as an extra-cost option in far pricier models.

But Nissan doesn’t stop there. Beginning with the SV trim, Nissan adds blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. Thus, Nissan offers many of the advanced features we like with adaptive cruise control the sole major exception.

Performance

Every 2020 Versa is governed by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. This one makes 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. Nissan pairs this engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox in base models.

Few customers, however, will likely choose the manual transmission, chiefly because not a lot of drivers know how to use one or prefer not to have one. What’s especially interesting about today’s vehicles equipped with manual transmissions is that they’re not as fuel efficient as automatic transmissions. In the Versa’s case, we have a continuously variable transmission sending power to the front wheels in most models.

Here, the mpg difference is profound: 32 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway for a combined 35 mpg. This compares to 27/35/30 mpg city/highway/combined in the base model. Even though fuel prices are low as of this writing, we think springing for the CVT makes sense.

Performance is not the Versa’s forte. But it isn’t a sluggard. This small sedan offers adequate off-the-mark acceleration and decent passing power. Under full throttle – such as when traveling down a highway entrance or when passing, the Versa does what is must do. The engine does whine when tapped to perform, but the CVT eases as various “steps” within the band curve. That a CVT is present won’t be noticed by the average driver, but it will be quickly detected by everyone else.

Electronic steering, front and rear stabilizer bars, and decent handling combine to give the Versa an improved driving feel over earlier models.

Competitive Set

We mentioned that the Versa’s competition is shrinking. That’s true with models such as the Ford Fiesta on the way out and likely the Chevrolet Sonic following. Fiat Chrysler doesn’t have a true subcompact offering, but it still offers the mini Fiat 500. The Mazda2 is gone in name only as it is rebadged as a Toyota.

The remaining players include the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Golf, Hyundai Accent, and the Kia Rio. Mitsubishi and Subaru are two other manufacturers that are absent from the segment.

Our Recommendation

Rarely do we recommend a base model and that holds true for the Versa. Yes, it is the only trim with a manual, but if you’re an enthusiast, this isn’t the model to consider.

We think either the SV or SR model are good choices, but we’d pay the extra $600 for the latter, gaining such features as LED headlights with LED accent lights, 17-inch split 5-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels, a body-color rear spoiler, keyless entry with push-button start, and sport cloth seat trim. A $300 Convenience Package adds heated front seats and intelligent (adaptive) cruise control.

10 Father’s Day Gift Ideas for the Car Enthusiast

May 29, 2017 by admin 1 Comment

If your dad is a car guy, Father’s Day gift ideas should align with what he drives, collects or admires. No tie, cuff links or button-down shirts for your father on his special day, but something appropriately drawn from our list of 10 gift ideas for the car enthusiast.

Recaro Office Chair1. Seat him like a king — Dad likes his Recaro bucket seats so much he’d sit in them all day if he could. Now you can purchase Recaro-designed office chairs offering the support and bolstering that have made this brand famous the world over.

2. Never lack a charge again — If your father owns a classic car, he doesn’t enjoy such modern conveniences as a USB port. And since we’re tethered to our smartphones, the logical way to resolve this problem is giving him an electronic device car charger. Simply connect the charger to the car’s 12-volt outlet and he’ll have access to up to five USB ports.

Curves Scotland3. Throw him some Curves — Does Dad like to read? If he is a fan of Road & Track or Car and Driver, he’ll love Curves — a series of book-like magazines exploring some of the best driving roads in the world (we reviewed the Scotland edition here. Featured are such places as Scotland, the Pyrenees, California and Austria in cars such as the Porsche Panamera, which took the magazine staff to unusual stops along the way. Dozens of beautiful photos included.

Ford Mustang Car Cover4. Cover it with love — Your father’s classic Ford Mustang is his pride and joy, but if he doesn’t keep it in the garage, then exposure to the sun, rain, and bird droppings can mar the paint. Give Dad a fitted car cover, one designed with his specific make/model in mind.

5. Send him to racing school — Look for a racing school where students can drive a Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren or other exotic. Dad will receive instruction from a professional, then enjoy lap time behind the wheel of a dream car. Take note of the grin on his face as he completes his training! Check out the Skip Barber Racing School or the Bondurant Racing School for mainstream models, including Corvette and Dodge Challenger SRT.

Can you see Dad behind the wheel of a Corvette at racing school?

fm transmitter6. Listen with Bluetooth — Provide your father with Bluetooth connectivity by means of an FM wireless transmitter. This simple device connects to a 12-volt outlet and enables hands-free calling and audio streaming for distraction-free driving. What an ideal present for the owner of a pre-modern-technology model.

Mike's Garage7. Personalize his space — Dad’s garage is his space, but is it labeled as such? That’s where a personalized garage sign or plaque can put the imprint on his work area. Include his name and an outline of his favorite ride for an altogether pleasing look. We’re partial to this dual-sided personalized garage hanging wall plaque offered by HomeWetBar.com.

8. Dress his feet — You might not think of buying your Dad footwear, but if he owns a stick-shift car, then purchase him a pair of driving shoes. Such shoes are specifically designed for heel-and-toe downshifting — what makes manual gearboxes so special. Piloti has made a name for itself by developing footwear outfitted with spherical heels, supplying extra comfort and protection of the heel bone as you drive.

Armor All Wipes9. Wipe away cares — Your father is out there on many Saturday mornings washing and cleaning out his car, giving it the sparkle he craves. In between those times, why not supply him with Armor All wipes — cleaning, glass, protectant, and leather? They’re the perfect complement to spray cleaners and ideal for those in-between cleaning times.

Sunex Tools Ramps10. Give Dad a lift — Unless your father actually owns a lift, he may use various jack stands and floor jacks to lift his car. Maybe it is time to invest in a high-quality and durable ramp, one with a 20-ton capacity. We’re partial to the Sunex Tools aid truck ramps, what supplies a wide drive surface and perforated holes for traction. Check out the nifty telescopic t-handle extenders for ease of maneuverability.

Happy Father’s Day!

Make this Father’s Day one Dad will never forget. Of course, it isn’t the gift that matters most — the gift of your presence is the best present you can give him. That said, our 10 gift ideas are the icing on the “presence” cake, with each one likely to be gladly received.

Disclaimers — Gift ideas are not endorsements, except for the author’s review of the Curves book. All photos, with the exception of the 2015 Corvette, are copyright the respective manufacturer.

2016 GMC Yukon XL Denali Redux

August 12, 2016 by admin 5 Comments

GMC’s largest and most luxurious SUV.

2016 GMC Yukon XL Denali

The SUV market continues to expand as consumers make the shift away from cars. The GMC Yukon and the larger Yukon XL are part of that trend and include customers moving up from a minivan or a crossover utility vehicle.

2016 GMC Yukon XL Denali

A 2016 GMC Yukon XL Denali was a recent weekly driver, but it wasn’t the first time I’ve been behind-the-wheel time of this traditional, body-on-frame SUV. Indeed, in my past reviews and thoughts about the model I have affectionately called it “Cadillac Escalade Light,” offering homage to GM’s most luxurious SUV.

That doesn’t mean the big GMC is a lightweight — far from it. It’s as close to a Cadillac model you can get without invading the Escalade’s space. But that still means you get perforated leather seats, heated and cooled front bucket seats, heated second-row outboard seats, a heated steering wheel, a Bose audio system, wireless phone charging, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot among other features.

Year-Over-Year Updates

The current-generation Yukon XL was released in 2015, thus its most significant changes took place last year. Even so, GMC wasn’t about to settle on its laurels as there are a few new or updated features included this year.

For one, GMC increased the Intellilink’s processing speed and introduced Apple CarPlay. An enhanced “Driver Alert Package” includes lane keep assist and automatic high/low beam headlamps. Two new exterior colors, a pair of 22-inch wheel choices, and a capless fuel filler feature round out the changes introduced in 2016.

What makes a GMC worthy of the Denali label? Answer: Denali is the top trim level for the brand and is found in every model except for GMC’s full-size Savana van line.

Lay on Some Chrome-Like Touches

One distinguishing feature for all Denalis is the generous amounts of chrome-like trim surrounding the grille, bumpers, headlights, crossing the belt line, on the lower profile trim, enveloping the windows, and on to the rear fascia. Not to be left out are the wheels, typically clad in thick chrome alloy.

The enhanced look isn’t for everyone, but it does provide visual appeal, allowing adorned GMC models get noticed. And if you’re spending around $80,000 for one, you don’t want it to be confused with lesser models. Sure, the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban have their own appeal, but then they’re not GMC.

The Yukon XL is a massive vehicle and represents the extended wheelbase version of the Yukon. This model is marked by a bold honeycomb grille, flared headlamp assemblies, and distinct pockets housing the LED fog lamps.

The long slab sides are marked by chrome, character lines, body sculpting, trim, and an expansive greenhouse. Indeed, the rear side windows are especially long and contribute to this SUV’s massive persona. At the rear is an expansive lift gate, vertical combination lamps, and a spoiler.

Spacious and Upscale Cabin

Inside, the Denali provides standard seating for seven and available space for eight. The standard seating arrangement has two bucket seats up front, a pair of captain’s chairs in the second row, and a third-row split folding bench seat.

Massive is the cabin and every seating position supplies generous amounts of head space and legroom. The third row has the tightest space, but even that area has sufficient shoulder and hip room.

Up front is a pair of comfortable bucket seats with all driver and cabin controls where you expect to find them. Leather is generously found across the dashboard, surrounding the center console, on the door inlays, and covering the seats. Also present are wood grain accents and burnished aluminum trim; contrast stitching on the console as well as on the doors — collectively, these touches elevate this model.

Standard features are many and include three-zone climate control, a power tilt and telescopic steering column, power-adjustable pedals, as well as heated and ventilated front seats. The second row seats also have a heating option and include a power-release fold and tumble feature for ease of access to the third row.

Additional features standard with the Yukon XL includes keyless entry and push button start, a wireless charging port for mobile phones, and a 110-volt power outlet. On the entertainment side, this model has a 10-speaker, Bose Centerpoint audio system; HD radio; a GMC Intellilink telematics system with an 8-inch color display; and navigation. You’ll also find Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth connectivity, OnStar, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

Package upgrades allow customers to personalize their Denali as they see fit.

You have your choice of 22-inch wheels ($1,495), an Open Road package ($2,860) — composed of a power sunroof and a rear-seat entertainment system featuring screens for both the second- and third-row passengers — and heated outboard second-row seats ($395). With the bench seat in place, the captain’s chairs go away. Carefully consider whether you need an eighth seating position at such a loss of very comfortable individual seats.

Safety and Road Manners

On the safety front, the Yukon XL Denali comes with a suite of airbags, stability and traction control, front and rear park assist, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, side blind zone alert with lane change alert, a rearview camera, and hill start assist. Also available is adaptive cruise control with front automatic braking ($995) and a head-up display ($425).

Take to the road and the big V8 zooms to highway speeds with authority. The 6.2-liter engine works in tandem with an eight-speed automatic transmission, enabling this vehicle to reach 60 mph from a dead stop in about six seconds.

This model has a firm ride and benefits from Magnetic Ride Control, a real-time damping system. An independent suspension is up front and to the rear is a five-line, solid axle suspension. The electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion arrangement provides effortless handling; the four-wheel disc brakes with vented front and rear rotors bring this three-ton conveyance to a certain stop.

Parting Thoughts

The Yukon XL as well as the Yukon appeal to a certain type of buyer. Both models provide a solid and dependable vehicle ideal for carrying large payloads and for towing. Indeed, if you have 8,000 pounds of camper, boat, or recreational vehicle to pull, then the big GMC can handle that.

Buyers who don’t need such a huge footprint as the Yukon models might consider the GMC Acadia and Acadia Denali instead. The all-new-for-2017 Acadia now offers a standard four-cylinder engine in addition to a 310-horsepower V6. It offers room for up to seven and comes with standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive.

Other models in this segment include the Toyota Land Cruiser, Ford Expedition, and the Nissan Armada. Only the Expedition offers an extended wheelbase version similar to the Yukon XL.

Lexus Reiteration: 2015 Vehicle Dependability Study Leader

March 2, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

J.D. Power & Associates has once again placed the Lexus brand atop its Vehicle Dependability Study. For 2015 and for the fourth consecutive year, Toyota’s luxury brand won out, besting 30 other brands. General Motors and Toyota Motors each received seven segment awards.

Customer satisfaction is critical in the auto industry, thus J.D. Power & Associates annually gauges brand progress based on owner feedback. The 2015 Vehicle Dependability Study has been released and for the fourth consecutive year Lexus is America’s top brand, easily outdistancing second-place Buick and third-place Toyota.

Number of Problems Per 100 Vehicles

As in recent years, manufacturers have been slammed by Bluetooth connectivity and voice recognition problems, technologies that pull down scores. The J.D. Power 2015 Vehicle Dependability Study, now in its 26th year, focuses on vehicles after three years of ownership. Thus, this year’s study examined problems experienced over the past 12 months by original owners of 2012 model-year vehicles.

From the collected data, J.D. Power assigns a score based on the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100). In particular, a lower score means a higher finish and at PP89 Lexus finished well ahead of the PP141 industry average.

2015 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study

Niggling and Sometimes Pervasive Problems

J.D. Power’s study is not some cursory investigation of problems owners face. Instead, the study quantifies 177 specific problem symptoms within eight major vehicle categories. Consequently, scores are assigned to all 31 tracked brands.

“As we’ve seen in our Initial Quality Study, owners view in-vehicle technology issues as significant problems, and they typically don’t go away after the ownership honeymoon period is over,” said Renee Stephens, vice president of U.S. automotive at J.D. Power. “Furthermore, early indications from our upcoming 2015 U.S. Tech Choice Study show that vehicle owner expectations of advanced technology capabilities is growing. The owners clearly want the latest technology in their vehicles, and they don’t hesitate to express their disapproval when it doesn’t work. Their definition of dependability is increasingly influenced by usability.”

Tech Functionality and Usability

And that usability will often determine whether a customer returns to the brand or goes elsewhere the next time. Indeed, 56 percent of car owners who reported no problems with their vehicle say they “definitely will” purchase the same brand the next go around. However, 43 percent of those who experienced three or more problems with a vehicle are likely to flee to a competitor.

Moreover, the study found that 15 percent of new-vehicle buyers avoided cars they considered technologically problematic compared to just 4 percent a decade earlier. Obviously, technology can be a deal maker or a breaker for a significant number of new car shoppers.

As one who reviews new cars I can attest to the frustrations many car owners enumerate. That 55 percent of individuals surveyed said that they experienced Bluetooth pairing and connectivity problems is a phenomenal number that should not be easily dismissed. Furthermore, another 31 percent said that their phones would not connect when entering a vehicle.

Another key point of the study reveals problems with gearboxes. Specifically, 30 percent identified powertrain problems due to rough shifting and hesitation associated with automatic transmission. Notably, six of the top 10 problems had nothing to do with malfunctions or product defects — those problems were entirely attributed to the vehicle’s design.

Buick Ascension and the Industry Laggards

Buick at PP110 came in second place, just ahead of the Toyota brand at PP111. Certainly, Buick has been enjoying a renaissance in recent years and its latest ascension has moved it up by three spots. Cadillac, Honda, Porsche, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Scion, Chevrolet and GMC rounded out the top 10.

On the other end of the spectrum, Fiat finished at PP273, followed by Land Rover at PP258. No other brands had scores above 200. The Chrysler Group finished below the industry’s average across the board, except for the Ram truck brand.

As far as the top models in each segment, J.D. Power looked at 8 car categories and 11 truck categories. Trucks, by the way, is a broad and generic term composed of pickup trucks, vans, sport utility vehicles and multipurpose vehicles.

The winners were:

  • Small Car: Scion xD
  • Compact Car: Toyota Corolla
  • Compact Premium Car: Lexus ES
  • Compact Sporty Car: Scion tC
  • Midsize Car: Chevrolet Malibu
  • Midsize Sporty Car: Chevrolet Camaro
  • Midsize Premium Car: Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  • Large Car: Buick LaCrosse
  • Small SUV: Kia Sportage
  • Compact SUV: GMC Terrain
  • Compact Premium SUV: Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class
  • Compact MPV: Scion xB
  • Midsize SUV: Nissan Murano
  • Midsize Premium SUV: Lexus GX
  • Midsize Pickup: Honda Ridgeline
  • Minivan: Toyota Sienna
  • Large SUV: GMC Yukon
  • Large Light Duty Pickup: GMC Sierra LD
  • Large Heavy Duty Pickup: Chevrolet Silverado HD

Flummoxed by New Car Technology? You Are Not Alone.

September 2, 2014 by admin 1 Comment

J.D. Power 2014 Multimedia Quality and Satisfaction Study reveals much.

New car owners love their technologies, but only when they work right. Today’s cars offer a varying range of audio, communication, entertainment and navigation (ACEN) systems with hand touches, finger gestures, buttons, knobs and voice commands among the ways that we communicate with our cars.

infotainment system technology

ACEN Systems: Not so Hot Technology

As ideal as the technology is, it may not always work according to promise. Those problems are something that were confirmed in the J.D. Power 2014 Multimedia Quality and Satisfaction Study released last week. The study queried vehicle owners about their experiences and opinion of ACEN systems during their first 90 days of ownership with a focus on quality, design and the features offered.

As is customary with similar J.D. Power surveys, the company assigns a score based on the number of problems per 100 vehicles tested or PP100. The lower the score, the higher the quality. Typically, those scores look at particular makes and models, but with this survey the study returned net results — no manufacturers were identified.

Chevrolet Silverado infotainment system technology

Technology Problems Per 100 Vehicles

For 2014, the problems with built-in voice recognition averaged 8.3 PP100, rising from 7.6 PP100 in 2013. Vehicle owners cited three significant problems with voice recognition communication issues:

1. ACEN doesn’t recognize or misinterprets verbal commands — identified by 63 percent of respondents;

2. ACEN doesn’t recognize or misinterprets names/words — identified by 44 percent of respondents; and

3. ACEN doesn’t recognize or misinterprets numbers — identified by 31percent of respondents.

Customers may experience one, two or all three problems.

ACEN problems have grown in recent years as such systems are adopted by car manufacturers. The problems have eclipsed other vehicle woes including wind noise, Bluetooth connectivity and navigation issues.

Fixable or Not?

Unlike many vehicle problems, voice recognition and device connectivity problems cannot be fixed at the dealer level. They represent a technological design that may or may not be repairable with a software upgrade. Instead, vehicle owners may have to make do with the shortcomings or find alternate use options such as buttons and knobs. That’s the advice of Mike VanNieuwkuyk, executive director of global automotive at J.D. Power, who confirmed, “Despite having alternative controls, this problem still negatively impacts owner satisfaction.”

VanNieuwkuyk noted that manufacturers continue to build voice recognition and connectivity systems that fall short of customer expectations. The poor results follow good manufacturer intentions, but does little to promote owner satisfaction.

Cadillac CUE technology

Bluetooth Connectivity Issues

J.D. Power found that Bluetooth connectivity problems loom large for many buyers, although the study revealed an improvement in quality based on a score of 5.7 PP100, down from 6.3 PP100 the previous year. The two largest connectivity problems were the system’s inability to recognize or connect the mobile phone or device, a problem in 40 percent of the complaints. Another 30 percent cited problems with automatically connecting when entering the vehicle. Just over half of the owners said that they have iPhone OS smart phones; 41 percent reportedly use an Android phone.

Troubles aside, 70 percent of new-vehicle owners are interested in built-in recognition. That number falls to 44 percent if the system costs at least $500. Thus, building an affordable and working system may help manufacturers win new customers.

J.D. Power surveyed 86,114 new car owners between Feb. and May 2014, with a focus on navigation, voice recognition, rear-seat entertainment and speakers. Respondents were also supplied with sourcing information to enable owners to review data and parse information about individual products and components.

Delayed: 2015 Honda Fit

May 27, 2014 by admin 3 Comments

The battlefield for small cars is an intense one with numerous compact and other small models available to entice first-time car buyers. Honda has its Civic, a compact model that competes with the Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus for customers.

On the subcompact level is the Honda Fit, a vehicle that is nowhere near as popular as the Civic. Yet, Honda has big plans for its smallest model, having invested more than $800 million to build a new plant in Celaya, Mexico. This is the first time that the Honda Fit will be built in North America.

That manufacturing plant was supposed to have begun producing the next generation Fit in April, but quality control and transportation issues have pushed back its release until June reports Automotive News.

Im thrilled that we’ve been able to greatly enhance and add to the Fits already excellent attributes to provide Honda customers with class-above features and refinement at such a value price point, said Jeff Conrad, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Honda. The 2015 Fit is practical, roomy, efficient, affordable and perhaps best of all, great fun to drive.

2015 Honda Fit

Subcompact Honda Fit

Nevertheless, the front-wheel drive, five-passenger subcompact will soon arrive and will position the Fit to better compete against several models. Those models include the Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Sonic, Mazda2, Mitsubishi Mirage, Volkswagen Golf, and the Nissan Versa. The Versa, including the Versa Note hatchback, is currently the best selling model in the segment, a position that Honda hopes it will soon take.

To get to greater sales Honda is aggressively pricing the 2015 Fit. The base Honda Fit LX with a six-speed manual transmission retails from $15,525. Choose the available continuously variable transmission and your starting price rises to $16,325.

At a Glance: 2015 Jeep Renegade

The first Italian-made Jeep product.

2015 Jeep Renegade
Made in Italy: 2015 Jeep Renegade.

If you are looking for a small SUV, the 2015 Jeep Renegade intends to meet that need. Introduced this week just before the start of the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the latest model from this iconic brand also represents the most recent product jointly developed by Fiat and Chrysler, automakers that have since merged to become Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, N.V. or FCA.

Jeep is a wholly-owned brand of FCA.

Iconic Design: Jeep Renegade

The all-new Jeep Renegade advances a look that is at once timeless as it is modern. Its fascia, particularly the round headlamps that flank its seven vertical slot grille, is all Jeep. Its tail lamps detail an X design, while its interior is wholly modern with many tech features included.

As with all Jeep models except for the Wrangler, the Renegade is car-based (unibody construction). Like other Jeep models, select editions such as the Renegade Trailhawk will be trail rated. Thats a designation for Jeep 4×4 models that perform in five categories of off-road conditions: articulation, ground clearance, maneuverability, traction, and water fording. The traction this model experiences off-road is proportionate to what is experienced on asphalt.

Two 4×4 Systems

Jeep says that the Renegades two 4×4 systems are based on the technology found in the Cherokee, an all-new model introduced this year. Jeep claims that the Renegade will deliver best-in-class off-road capability, providing 100 percent of the available torque through any wheel to the ground for excellent grip.

Both 4x4s are full-time systems; one offers a 20:1 crawl ratio.

Notably, the Renegade will be the first small SUV featuring a disconnecting rear axle and a power take-off unit, what will enable this Jeep to claim higher fuel efficiency numbers. Both systems will come equipped with a Jeep Selec-Terrain system with five driving modes: auto, snow, sand, mud, and rock, the latter exclusive to the Trailhawk edition.

The Expanding Jeep Brand

FCA has been pushing the Jeep brand hard in the United States and abroad. To that end it is offering a whopping 16 powertrain combinations to meet projected demand and to serve local markets.

Not all combinations will be available in the same market, what will include four gasoline, two diesel, and a flex-fuel engine. Manual and dual-dry clutch transmissions, and the segment’s first nine-speed automatic transmission will also be available. Additional fuel savings will be realized from start/stop technology.

High Tech Features Available

Jeep is making a big deal about the Renegades technological features pointing out that it will offer a range of communication, navigation, and entertainment features that were at one time available only with high-end SUVs. Some features are standard while others are part of upgrade packages.

No matter, the 2015 Jeep Renegade will offer on-demand Wi-Fi hot-spot capability, UConnect Access including 911 service, voice texting, Yelp search, and a mobile app service that allows the owner to start the vehicle remotely.

The Renegade comes with 5.0- or 6.5-inch touchscreen systems, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, an auxiliary jack, HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio with Travel Link, and a full-color instrument cluster display.

Jeep Renegade Specifications

The Jeep Renegade will sit on a 101.2-inch wheelbase and measure 166.6 inches long. That’s not too far off from the 103.7-inch wheelbase and 173.8-inch length for the Jeep Patriot, a product that Jeep intends to keep in production for now. The Renegade also measures 71 inches wide by 66.5 inches tall.

The all-important ground clearance numbers are 6.7 inches for the 42 and 7.9 inches for the 4×4. Choose the Trailhawk 4×4 and you get 8.7 inches of clearance, matching the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid, for instance. And towing is a possibility too with the Renegade rated from 1,000 to 3,300 pounds, depending on the model.

Pending Product Details

Further details about package options, trim levels, and fuel economy ratings will be released closer to its production date. The new model is the first Jeep that will be built outside of the United States, at an assembly plant in Melfi, Italy. Its engines will come from plants in the United States, Brazil, and Italy.
