Buick 2020: What’s New

February 26, 2020 by admin 2 Comments

This Buick Encore GX is the latest model for GM’s premium brand.

Go to Specifications: Encore | Envision | Enclave | Regal GS | Regal TourX

The Buick brand has enjoyed huge success in the U.S. and abroad, but particularly in China where its sales are six times that of the U.S. In the domestic market, Buick sales have doubled over the past decade, benefitting from new products, including high-demand utility vehicles.

On face value, the Buick brand should remain strong, but China is a huge concern, especially as that nation grapples with the coronavirus (COVID-19), which has killed thousands and has essentially shut down the consumer market. If the virus isn’t soon contained, the outlook for Buick, GM, and all of the automotive world will certainly be gravely affected.

We can’t know the future, but we can surmise that under the right conditions, the Buick brand will continue to set itself apart from the other GM brands. That said, its partner brand, GMC, remains the larger of the two and will likely continue to benefit from more model offerings going forward, including its Hummer line of electric vehicles.

Buick Now and Later

Here is what’s new with Buick for 2020 and what we can expect looking forward.

The LaCrosse sedan is discontinued. Sedan sales are plummeting the world over, but especially in the U.S. For Buick, its large LaCrosse sedan has gone away as customers continue to shift to crossovers, including the Enclave.

Speaking of the Enclave, a new Sport Touring Package rolls out. This package features a unique sport grille with body-color surround and 20-inch bright machined aluminum wheels with contrasting Satin Graphite pockets. It’s available on the Enclave Essence trim level.

An all-new Encore GX model arrives. Not to be confused with the Encore, the Encore GX is an all-new model, which slots between the Encore and Envision. Arriving this spring, the Korean-built Encore GX gives buyers a choice of two turbocharged three-cylinder engines. It comes packed with tech and safety features and should target BMW X2 shoppers. It’s also about the same size as the Mazda CX-30.

Future model changes on tap. We expect the Regal models will go away after this year, leaving Buick with an all-SUV lineup. One of the next models planned is the Buick Enspire, a crossover based on the Cadillac XT4, and pricier than the Buick Envision. We may see both hybrid and full-electric versions at some point, but we expect its U.S. debut will be moved back to 2021. The reason? This made-in-China coupe-like SUV will likely encounter delays related to COVID-19 manufacturing idleness.

Buick and Other GM Brands

Buick’s survival in a shrinking GM universe is remarkable. Oldsmobile was canceled earlier this century, followed by Saturn, Saab, Pontiac, and Hummer. Later, GM sold Vauxhall and Opel to Peugeot, and plans to shut down Holden in 2021. That leaves Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac to hold the GM banner, with only Chevrolet having anything resembling a global presence.

9 Facts About the 2020 Buick Envision

December 23, 2019 by admin 4 Comments

Compact SUV: Buick Envision.

The Buick Envision is a small luxury sport utility vehicle, one of four crossovers offered by GM’s premium brand. Buick rolled out the Envision in 2016 and has made light changes since. Let’s take a look at this crossover and what to consider when shopping this model.

1. Made in China. The Buick Envision is one of the first Chinese-built models sold in the USA. Other than the Volvo S60, we haven’t seen the onslaught of low-cost models from the world’s largest consumer country.

2. Mainstream or Luxury? Buick is supposed to represent the middle ground between Chevrolet and Cadillac. In some ways it succeeds in this endeavor, as it delivers luxury features for less, including standard imitation leather seats, 8-way power-controlled and heated front seats, four USB ports, and Wi-Fi capability.

3. Available in five trims. The 2020 Envision comes in five trims: 1SV, Preferred, Essence, Premium I, and Premium II. Prices range from $31,995 to $44,495, plus a $1,195 destination fee.

4. Ample storage space. Crossovers supply generous storage capacity and the Buick Envision is no exception. Behind the rear seat you’ll enjoy 26.9 cubic feet of space. With the rear seat folded, the cargo capacity more than doubles to 57.3 cubic feet.

5. Satisfactory standard performance. The Envision’s standard engine has an output of 197 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque, which is about 15 percent more power than the Nissan Rogue. This engine works with a six-speed automatic transmission. You’ll average about 25 mpg with this model.

6. Optional boosted performance. While the standard engine gets it done, some shoppers are looking for performance. Fortunately, the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is an option worth considering. It has an output of 252 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and works with a 9-speed automatic transmission, making it a strong competitor to luxury models such as the Audi A3 and Lexus NX. This engine is standard with the Envision Premium and comes with all-wheel drive. You’ll average about 22 mpg with this model.

7. Steering, handling, and tuning. The Envision isn’t a performance model, but it does offer a comfortable ride as it absorbs most road abrasions with ease. The steering is light to the touch, while this SUV handles as expected on twisty roads. It isn’t an especially engaging model as it lacks the performance characteristics of pricier luxury competitors.

8. Available all-wheel drive. Not offered with the standard trim, the Envision’s all-wheel-drive system costs about $1,750, beginning with the Preferred trim. Choose AWD if you live where wintry conditions are common.

9. Packages for your consideration. Not all Envision trims offers package options, but of those that do, the Driver Confidence Package ($1,545) and Active Package ($695) are worth considering. The first package bundles such features as enhanced automatic braking and a surround-view camera system. The second package includes an integrated cargo liner and a trailer package. When properly equipped, the Envision can pull up to 1,500 pounds.

The 2020 Buick Envision

Buick’s Envision checks many of the right marks for shoppers seeking a premium utility vehicle. Strong discounting, robust financing and leasing terms, and competitive warranties bring value to the model line. We recommend starting your build with the Preferred trim, but head right to the Premium if you prefer the turbo engine and access to the full list of available amenities.

Upscale SUV: 2019 Buick Envision

August 2, 2019 by admin 3 Comments

Crossover utility vehicles are the top choice for many consumers these days.
The Envision is the middle of three Buick SUV models.

Historically, Buick has served as GM’s premium brand, delivering a slew of car models of distinction. Today, Buick maintains its position between Chevrolet and Cadillac, but its model line and sales are skewed heavily toward utility vehicles.

The Buick marque has successfully adapted to changing consumer tastes, delivering three SUVs to consumers: Encore (subcompact), Envision (compact/midsize), and Enclave (midsize, three rows). Yes, the LaCrosse sedan and Regal hatchback and wagon remain, but the first model is in its final year, while the future of the Opel-supplied Regal is uncertain.

Auto Trends received a 2019 Buick Envision for testing in July, a model offering naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. Two transmission choices, front- and all-wheel drive, and five trims are available. The Envision rolled out in 2017 and is GM’s first made-in-China utility vehicle sold stateside.

Buick offers your choice of 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels.

2019 Buick Envision Overview

The 2019 Envision’s five trims include Envision ($31,995), Preferred ($35,250), Essence ($37,550), Premium I ($40,700), and Premium II ($43,600) trims. Add $1,195 for the destination charge. Choose the optional all-wheel drive, which is available in the Preferred and Essence trims and your cost rises by $3,255. The two top trims supply standard all-wheel drive.

Most models come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which generates 197 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. This engine works with a six-speed automatic transmission. Also available is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 252 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Buick pairs this engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Competing models include the Volvo XC60, Acura RDX, Lincoln Corsair, and the Jaguar F-Pace. We also think a few of the top-trim versions of the Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Edge, and Nissan Murano are worth comparing.

A Matter of Style

From stem to stern, the 2019 Envision wears its Buick skin well. The front fascia is punctuated by the brand’s emblematic grille, which is offset by tear-dropped-shaped headlamps. A broad lower grille opening is honed in by available fog lamps.

Along the sides, the beltline rises to intersect with the gently falling roofline. Deep body sculpting and painted aluminum or alloy wheels impart gracefulness. From the rear, the clamshell liftgate features wraparound tail lamps. On some models diffuser-like trim with dual-exhaust ports raises the styling quotient.

Supportive, yet comfortable seats adorn the front. The split-opening center
storage compartment is where you’ll find the USB ports.

Inside, the cabin isn’t especially roomy, delivering sufficient room for four or five in a pinch. You’ll sit tightly in the back with two others if you dare. Otherwise, we recommend upgrading to the Enclave or moving over to the GMC Acadia, which is usually sold in the same showrooms as Buick.

The Envision features a layered dashboard, a broad center console, and sculptured door panels. You’ll find a variety of materials in place, including a long slab of imitation wood across the dashboard, with leather trim on some models. The brown and beige interior of our test model was certainly attractive, something we would expect Buick to deliver.

All models come with keyless entry and push-button start, a reclining and sliding second-row seat that also folds, full power accessories, power-controlled and heated front seats, and air conditioning. Cloth and imitation leather seats are standard. Some models feature leather seats. Other upgrades include a heated steering wheel and heated outboard rear seats.

Safety and Technology

Both the NHTSA and IIHS award the Envision with favorable crash test ratings. Indeed, the NHTSA assigns its top 5-star rating to this SUV.

But there is some disappointment with the Envision and that is its available driver-assist safety technology. Like other premium brands (not just GM), most of the advanced technologies available today cost more and are optional on the top trims only.

These features include adaptive cruise control and forward automatic braking, which are bundled with a surround vision camera as part of a $1,545 Driver Confidence Package. Mainstream brands such as Toyota offer many driver-assist features as standard equipment or at least deliver packages available across the model line.

The cabin features a mix of soft-touch, imitation wood and cloth or leather materials.

Other driver-assist features such as lane keep assist with lane departure warning and forward collision alert are standard beginning with the Premium I trim. The Premium II trim adds a head-up display.

Buick equips the 2019 Envision with a six-speaker audio system and an 8-inch touchscreen display. OnStar safety and security features, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility come standard. Most models have two front USB ports. Available equipment includes a Wi-Fi hotspot, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, and a pair of rear charging-only USB ports in the rear center console.

On the Road

Our test model had the turbocharged engine. It is offered in a variety of applications across various Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac models.

We were pleased by the amount of power supplied — from step-off acceleration to passing performance. With a little lag of note, this turbo spools quickly and convincingly. It offers an excellent substitute for a V6.

Steering is precise and evenly weighted. The Envision shines on the straightaways and holds its own on curvy roads. Braking is firm, the ride is comfortable and the interior is quiet — the latter trait is a Buick standard.

The available upgraded powertrain includes this turbo engine matched with a
smooth-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission.

Credit GM with building a wonderful and modern 9-speed automatic transmission. It works seamlessly in the background and is hardly noticeable, which is what customers want.

As for the base engine, we think it’ll suit the majority of shoppers, but it offers just a 2 mpg edge over the turbo. Thus, opting for more power supplies the performance benefit you may want and brings in all-wheel drive as well. The latter does, of course, supply an extra measure of stability when power is sent to all four corners.

Auto Trends Recommends

We think starting your search with the Preferred trim is the right way to go. This model adds a hands-free power liftgate and rear part assist. We also noticed that as of this writing, the Preferred trim carries a generous discount, lowering its price below the base model.

Choose all-wheel drive if you live where winter conditions prevail. Of course, if you want all of the available driver-assist technologies, you’ll have to pay for it by selecting the top-trim model and related safety package. But only choose this if you can negotiate by bringing your final cost close to $40,000.

Most models have a power liftgate, which supplies access to nearly
27 cubic feet of standard storage space.

Bye, Bye Buick Cascada!

February 19, 2019 by admin

2019 Buick Reatta
The Buick Cascada is the brand’s first convertible since the Reatta.

Almost since its debut in 2016, the Buick Cascada seemed destined for early cancellation. For one, the market for cars, especially convertibles, was especially limited. Further, the Cascada was also the product of Opel, a company now no longer owned by GM, but by Groupe PSA, the maker of Peugeot, Citroen and other Euro-centric brands.

The competition was never fierce as few manufacturers participate in the drop-top arena. Early on, the Cascada battled with the now-discontinued Volkswagen Eos, along with the Audi A3 Cabriolet and BMW 2 Series convertible. Some might have thought the Cascada would fill the domestic void left by the Chrysler 200 Convertible, which was last produced in 2014. But its impact was negligible.

GM says that 2019 is the last model year for the Cascada. Slow sales are only part of the reason why this model is set for cancellation. We’ll uncover the reasons why and explore everything you need to know about the retiring Cascada:

1. From Opel, With Love

The Buick Cascada is also sold as the Opel Cascada throughout Europe. GM owned Opel from 1929 to 2017, and occasionally turned to its German subsidiary to supply models for the U.S. market.

We’ve seen Opel models sold as Saturns and even the Cadillac Catera utilized an Opel product. Buick has been the main beneficiary all along, especially in recent years as both the Cascada and Regal lines are courtesy of Opel.

Despite the end of Opel ownership, GM still relies on its former subsidiary and may continue to do so.

2. Just One Powertrain Choice

The front-wheel-drive Cascada comes with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine makes 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque.

It is also the only powertrain choice and not a very strong one, given this model’s two-ton weight. It earns 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, which isn’t especially inspiring given this vehicle’s size.

3. Mainstream, Premium or Luxury?

GM doesn’t call Buick its intermediate brand, although in many ways it is. Chevrolet and Cadillac serve as the bookends for GM, while Buick (and GMC) occupy the middle ground.

The Cascada’s handsome exterior and quiet cabin with the roof up are two of its strong suits as well as its long list of standard features. But the cabin seems cluttered, sits just four people, and this Buick lacks certain advanced driver-assist features, including automatic emergency braking.

4. One of three Buick car models.

Take a look at Buick and you’ll find Encore, Envision, and Enclave crossover utility vehicles. Together, these three models comprise more than two-thirds of the brand’s sales.

That leaves three Buick car models to fill out the product line. Besides the Cascada and Regal, Buick sells the large LaCrosse sedan, and that model will come to an end before 2019 closes. Sales fell by nearly 23 percent last year, with just over 15,000 units sold. Sales increased by about 22 percent in 2018 as Buick rolled out new designs.

Interestingly, the Regal is also supplied by Opel, but will likely live on. Currently, Buick offers this midsize model in sportback and wagon versions, the latter similar to the crossover designs that have captured consumer interest.

5. Tepid sales, at best.

In 2018, Buick sold just 4,628 Cascada units, down from 5,595 a year earlier. In its first year, Cascada sales tallied 7,153 units.

The sales drop isn’t surprising as it follows a consumer-wide trend away from car models.

6. Opel cancels the Cascada.

GM may be canceling the Cascada, but it starts with Opel, which markets the model under the same name. Opel builds the Cascada at a factory in Poland and says that it is ending production there in response to slow and declining sales.

Thus, the Cascada cancellation is ultimately a PSA Groupe decision, not GM. Still, this gives GM an easy “out” as they depart the segment.

The China Connection

With the Opel connection shrinking, where will Buick turn for future models? Likely, they’ll continue to offer their share of GM-derived models that they share with Chevrolet and GMC.

But, they have another source that already supplies the Envision: its China operation. A cursory look at the brand’s China lineup shows hatchbacks, sedans, and crossovers, along with vans. Should Buick need additional product going forward, it may tap its China operation to supply the same. Of course, tariffs and geopolitical tensions may have some say in limiting that.

Buick Envision Debuts With No Fanfare

June 8, 2016 by admin 2 Comments

The made-in-China Envision is now on sale in North America.

Buick Envision
The Buick Envision is GM’s first Chinese import to the US.

The Buick Envision has arrived, the third crossover in this tri-shield brand’s portfolio. Only you wouldn’t know that without closely examining US auto sales data for May 2016.

Tucked within that information are the 89 Envisions sold in the US last month. As promised, Buick said the Envision would go on sale in the second quarter of 2016. However, instead of the customary fanfare accompanied by TV ads and a media push, the Envision has quietly gone on sale.

Political Posturing and a New Crossover

Why the quiet debut? Buick told Automotive News the Envisions now on sale are high-trim level 2016s. In a few months, the full range of Envisions will be made available and sold as 2017s. Its an unusual approach, but it may signal an internal decision to avoid political theater.

Indeed, the Buick Envision is made in China and it might receive unwanted attention from the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump. Trump has harshly criticized US manufacturers for shipping jobs overseas or importing products that could just as easily be built by Americans.

Just last week Trump criticized the PGA Tour for its decision to move a tournament from the US to Mexico. The WGC-Cadillac Championship has been played at the Trump National Doral near Miami and will shift to Mexico beginning in 2017. Cadillac’s sponsorship was ending and will be replaced by Grupo Salinas, an assemblage of media companies.

NAFTA and Imports

Notably, Cadillac and Buick are GM brands and just this week Trump blasted the automaker for its investment in Mexico. GM now joins the Ford Motor Company, Carrier and Nabisco, as companies the presidential candidate has attacked.

While campaigning, Trump has suggested a 35 percent tariff on vehicles imported from Mexico. Of course, that recommendation ignores NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement), a trilateral agreement the US made with Canada and Mexico to do away with numerous tariffs.

2016/2017 Buick Envision

Political posturing aside, the Chinese-made Buick Envision fills an important hole in the Buick product line. Prior to its arrival, Buick offered the subcompact Encore and midsize Enclave crossovers. The Envision provides a natural step in the product line for Buick customers.

Visit the Buick.com website today and you’ll find no information about the Envision on its home page. Click the “All Vehicles” tab and a model list is shown. Cast your eyes on the “SUVs” category and you’ll spot the 2016 Envision tucked neatly between the 2016 Encore and the 2016 Enclave.

You’ll also spot a sky-high price for the Envision, starting at $42,070 or $3,005 higher than the Enclave. Click the “explore” tab, then “view specs” and you’ll find two trim levels featured. Both are fully-loaded all-wheel drive versions, the only models marketed in the 2016 model year.

Head back to the “all vehicles” tab and you’ll spot the 2017 Envision and a note explaining its fall 2016 availability. Click “explore” and a list of five trim levels will appear. The base price for the standard Envision is $34,990 with Preferred ($36,795), Essence ($38,645), Premium ($43,245), and Premium II ($45,885) models offered.

Front-wheel drive and a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine are standard. All-wheel drive or active twin-clutch all-wheel drive are available. A turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine is offered with the two top trims only.

The Buick Product Line

Buick’s model line is expanding and they’re using cars built in Michigan, Ontario, Kanas, and China to draw customers to the tri-shield brand. It is doubtful whether most customers care where their cars are built.

And as for American jobs, dealer and service level positions are keeping people employed and tax coffers are replenished no matter where the new car was manufactured.

No New Buick Verano for US Market

May 10, 2016 by admin 4 Comments

Buick’s entry-level model is on its way out.

An all-new Buick Verano is currently being marketed in China, but plans for the second-generation compact premium sedan do not include offering it in the North American market.

Automotive News reports that the entry-level sedan will not be renewed after the 2017 model year, leaving Buick’s US operation with just two sedans, a convertible, and a bevy of SUVs in the brand’s portfolio.

New Cruze, No New Verano

The front-wheel drive Buick Verano is underpinned by the same platform powering the Chevrolet Cruze, itself updated this year. The Verano’s main competitors are the Acura ILX and Lexus IS 250, and nearly 32,000 American consumers bought the small Buick last year.

Buick VeranoNevertheless, Buick sees its future following the consumer shift to SUVs, and is bringing the compact Envision SUV from China to augment the subcompact Encore and the midsize, three-row Enclave SUVs. Further, because most Buick and GMC dealers are sold under one roof, customers also have easy access to two lines of pickup trucks as well as four lines of GMC SUVs.

With customers no longer having access to the Verano, Buick dealers will have their work cut out for them when leases renew and owners trade in. Entry-level Buick shoppers may be redirected to the tiny Encore or the midsize Envision, the latter expected to generate 50,000 sales per year. Come 2018, the smallest sedan will be the Regal. The Buick Cascada is similarly sized, but it is a niche 2+2 convertible.

Wholesale Shift to Trucks & SUVs

GM’s decision to walk away from the Verano follows April’s sales figures release. Last month, Verano sales fell by 18.8 percent and are down by 11.7 percent through the first four months of this year. Sales of its large LaCrosse sedan are down by 21.7 percent, but Regal volume is up by 13.5 percent.

Buick’s strength remains in SUVs as the Encore is by far its best selling model, followed by the Enclave. Looking forward, Buick expects SUVs to generate 70 percent of its volume, enabling the brand to meet customer demand, but not without some risk.

That risk is based largely on fuel prices, what plays a significant role in consumer purchase decisions. When fuel prices are high, new car buyers avoid large SUVs and consider smaller models, including compact cars.

Sales Mix Among American Manufacturers

Indeed, among the traditional American manufacturers — GM, Ford and Fiat Chrysler (FCA)— car sales fell by 11 percent in 2015, while demand for pickup trucks and SUVs surged by 15 percent according to the International Business Times.

In 2015, FCA truck/SUV sales surged by 22 percent, while car sales plunged by 19 percent. GM, including Buick, realized a 16 percent increase in truck/SUV sales to a 14 percent drop in car sales. Ford has the narrowest change of all as truck/SUV sales rose by 8.3 percent, while car sales fell narrowly by 0.9 percent.

The Fuel Price Factor

In recent months, fuel prices have slowly, but steadily risen. That ascent may be seasonal as gas prices routinely rise as the summer driving season begins. The US Energy Information Administration has forecast an average price of $2.04 per gallon for the summer driving season (April-through-September) compared with $2.63 per gallon last year.

Both numbers are far lower than the $4.11 per gallon peak reached in July 2008. By January 2009 fuel prices averaged $1.84 per gallon, rising and falling since.

A big advantage for Buick lies in its ability to shift products quickly, if needed. Given that the second-generation Verano is sold in China, readying that model for the US market shouldn’t take long if consumer trends shift. That means we may not have seen the last of Buick’s smallest model as well as perhaps an all-new flagship sedan based on the Avenir concept.

Buick Cascada Set to Take Center Stage

February 5, 2016 by admin 2 Comments

A first-ever Super Bowl commercial for Buick introduces a new convertible.

GM’s Buick brand is enjoying outstanding success, even if those accomplishments aren’t as apparent in its home market. Worldwide sales topped 1.2 million units sold in 2015, a record, thanks largely to a Chinese market that has long-embraced GM’s premium brand.

Two all-new models are being added to the tri-shield make’s line this year. Auto Trends looked at the Buick Envision recently, a compact SUV made in the same land where Buick’s sales are foremost: China.

Three New Buick Models

Another model, the Buick Cascada, is poised to be released, a 2+2 convertible developed in Germany and built in Poland. Originally finding life as the Opel Cascada, the model name is also ascribed to two other brands: Vauxhall and now Buick.

And that’s not all: a third model, the 2017 Buick LaCrosse, will bow this summer. The new Lacrosse will represent the latest generation of Buick’s flagship sedan.

Super Bowl 50 Ad Spot

If the Buick Cascada name is new to you, then you aren’t alone. However, if you tune into Super Bowl 50 this Sunday evening, Buick’s drop top will take center stage. You’ll probably want to take your bathroom break after the spot finishes.

Specifically, Buick will feature the Cascada in a 30-second spot for the brand’s first-ever Super Bowl commercial. With tens of millions of American households tuning in, the Cascada will receive a quick, but hopefully memorable debut. Helping matters out are a pair of stars — New York Giants’ wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and actress/model Emily Ratajkowski.

“With sales surpassing 1.2 million vehicles globally for the first time ever in 2015, the Buick brand has never been stronger,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president, Global Buick Sales, Service and Marketing. “Super Bowl 50 represents a perfect opportunity for us to showcase our newest vehicles in a spot that delivers a mix of light-hearted humor and star-power to a global audience of millions of consumers.”

Aldred went on to explain that the two stars were chosen as they represent “attributes of the Buick brand and design philosophy.” Odell brings with him performance and Ratajkowski adds style; together they embody the Cascada’s design and adventurous spirit.

Continuation of a Successful Ad Campaign

The Super Bowl ad is Buick’s first new ad of 2016. It’s part of a “Experience the New Buick” advertising campaign launched in 2014 and was the recipient of the best luxury car campaign by Nielsen for two consecutive years. Buick is in the running for the award again this year.

Besides its sleek design, the Buick Cascada will rely upon a 1.6-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine to move this model. The diminutive engine is packed with ample power, delivering 200 horsepower and 207 foot-pounds of torque. It also has an overboost function, enabling it to bang out an additional 14 foot-pounds of torque on demand. This Ecotec engine comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Sorry, no manual gearbox is available.

Other standout features include a soft-top capable of dropping in 17 seconds, 20-inch alloy wheels, and an IntelliLink infotainment system with a 7-inch color display.

The Buick Model Line

The front-wheel drive Buick Cascada enters Buick-GMC showrooms this spring and will be followed by the other two models this summer. With the start of the 2017 model year, Buick’s North American lineup will be seven models strong and composed of four cars — Cascada, LaCrosse, Regal, and Verano — as well as three crossovers — Enclave, Envision and Encore.

A possible eighth model derived from two concepts cars — the Avenir sedan and the Avista coupe, may follow. Regardless, the Buick brand is better poised than it has been in a long time to capture new customers stateside.

Forecast: 7 Top Auto Trends for 2016

December 31, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

We take a look at what may become the top auto trends for 2016.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro.

This year (2015) will go down as one for the books. Specifically, it will be a sales record breaker once the books have been closed on Jan. 4. That means on Tuesday we’ll know which model was the best selling car (Toyota Camry), the best selling truck (Ford F-150), and the best selling luxury brand (BMW). Sorry for the spoilers.

Since the market bottomed out in 2009, consumers have been snapping up new vehicles, especially crossovers. Manufacturers continue to roll out new models along with the latest technologies and safety features.

If you haven’t purchased a car in at least a decade you’ll find a long list of included or available amenities not offered way back when. To that end, we’ll look at some of the top auto trends for 2016 and the impact of such trends.

1. Car sales continue to rise.

We’re due for an economic downturn, but that drop may still be more than a year away. If so, then look for US auto sales to top 18 million units in 2016, setting yet another record.

Although the Federal Reserve Bank has raised interest rates by 0.25 percent, the effect on consumers should be negligible. What is helping nearly everyone is low gas prices. As long as regular grade gasoline averages $2 per gallon or less, consumers will save hundreds of dollars per year.

2. The presidential election will become a factor.

No matter who the Democrats and Republicans serve up as their candidate, we’ll have two people who will be more alike than different. A number of policy issues will be discussed and debated; creating jobs for Americans will remain a top issue.

Expect both candidates to promise the moon, even if they can barely deliver on those promises. Expect a new administration to carefully review the fuel economy standards, perhaps proposing a rollback of the 54.5 mpg mandate that nearly all manufacturers will find tough to implement by 2025. That rollback, however, won’t occur before the new president takes office in January 2017.

2016 Volvo S60 Inscription

3. Chinese-built cars will increase in numbers.

It wasn’t too long ago that the thought of Chinese-built cars reaching the North American market had some people up in arms. After all, how could any manufacturer compete against a $6,800 Geely? Then again, what junk would be foisted upon consumers at such a low price point?

Well those fears are unfounded. First, no Chinese manufacturer has entered the market all by itself. Second, the cars that are imported from China are from known manufacturers. For instance, the Volvo S60 Inscription, a stretched wheelbase model, is made in China. The Chinese-made Buick Envision arrives this spring.

Although the floodgates aren’t about to open, you’ll see more products from different places thanks to the Trans-Pacific Partnership Free Trade Agreement (TPP), which is expected to be signed in February. You can also expect strong push-back against TPP from both sides of the political aisle.

4. Automotive lightweighting goes mainstream.

Okay, vehicle lightweighting is nothing new. Its just widely misunderstood.

A case in point — when I inquired at a recent automotive media event regarding lightweight properties for a new pickup truck, my hosts didn’t seem to understand my question. That question was further clouded when a colleague quipped, “They didn’t want to make it lighter because it is a heavy duty truck.” Sigh.

Car manufacturers, however, get lightweighting. They’re also working with elastomer manufacturers around the world to incorporate nitrile butadiene rubber in under-the-hood applications. As long as these and other materials are cost-effective, recyclable and practical, then greater adoption will continue throughout 2016 and well beyond.

2015 Ford F-150

The current-generation Ford F-150 is the poster model for all things lightweighting.

5. The lurch to autonomous driving continues.

The experts tell us that autonomous driving will arrive in 2020. That means within five years we’ll see the first driverless cars take to the road. That also means the beginning of the end for behind-the-wheel driving. Or does it?

No doubt, some type of autonomous driving will be in place, but with more than 250 million registered vehicles in the US, the percentage will be small, quite possibly matching the adoption rate for electric vehicles. Consumers won’t give up their cars en masse for several reasons, including wanting to keep the cars they love as well as not being able to afford the attendant higher cost for autonomous vehicles.

Politically, a backlash against autonomous vehicles may emerge, especially if consumers grow weary of the intrusiveness — perceived or otherwise — that emerging technologies bring, particularly in the form of privacy. Instead of a wholesale adoption of autonomous cars, a number of safety features will be standard. We’ll see adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and lane keep assist in more models in 2016.

6. New alliances and partnerships emerge.

We’re seeing more alliances emerge across the auto industry and that pace should continue in 2016. Such agreements will be forged to give manufacturers an edge wherever needed. Toyota and Mazda hooking up essentially keeps the latter in the ultra-competitive US market for the long haul while giving Toyota much needed product (Scion iA) for a low cost. Mazda will soon benefit from Toyota hybrid technology; both manufacturers will probably share Mazda’s SKYACTIV technologies to some degree.

I won’t predict where those alliances will emerge, but figure that any product holes will be filled by such agreements. Mitsubishi, if it is to survive in the US, must find a partner to supply a midsize sedan, share in EV development, and otherwise fill out its weak portfolio. Today’s strange bedfellows may become tomorrow’s partners.

7. Technologies begin to work as touted.

If you have purchased a car within the past two or three years, the telematics system may be one of your least favorite options. Consumer surveys conducted by J.D. Power have amplified that frustration, thus getting it right will give manufacturers a much-needed edge in luring on-the-fence shoppers.

Helping matters are two technology giants — Google and Apple. Both companies are vying for dashboard access with Google Android Auto and Apply CarPlay enabling ease of smartphone integration. Where manufacturers are slow to adopt either, third-party audio systems such as Pioneer and Kenwood are making units compatible with both. Thus, if you have an older car, you can enjoy that access and avoid buying a new car.

Top Auto Trends

Other top auto trends will have little to do with your car, at least directly. Most will have to do with buying a vehicle, with leasing likely to continue to grow in numbers, while long-term auto loans of up to 84 months become more common.

Of course, if any major international crisis erupts, then these predictions should be amended or tossed.

Buick Envision: Imported From China

December 7, 2015 by admin 3 Comments

Despite UAW protestations, GM will move forward with introducing the made-in-China Envision SUV, the eighth vehicle in this premium brand’s product line. The new SUV arrives next summer in time for the 2017 model year.

Buick Envision

The compact, premium Buick Envision SUV.

Chinese-built cars are here, but most consumers haven’t taken notice. Or at least they are in the dark about such models.

The 2016 Volvo S60 Inscription is one such model, an extended wheelbase version of this luxury sedan. Its not that Volvo has been trying to keep its importation a secret, rather the move to include Chinese-built vehicles is simply a natural progression in all things global manufacturing.

GM is about to bring one of its own products from China, the compact two-row Envision crossover SUV. The new model will slot between the tiny Encore and the midsize Enclave when it goes on sale next year, filling an important gap in Buick’s expanding product line.

It wasn’t too long ago that consumers were up in arms about automotive products imported from the largest consumer market in the world. After all, China is hardly a bastion of quality products, but automotive manufacturers have been working carefully to ensure what models are planned for overseas markets meet consumer expectations.

UAW Announces its Opposition

In any case, importing the Buick Envision isn’t without its risks or its opponents. Indeed, the UAW has taken exception to GM’s decision, issuing a statement on Dec. 4 deriding the move. Said UAW Vice President and Director of the General Motors Department, Cindy Estrada: “Today’s announcement by General Motors that they are importing the Envision from China is a slap in the face to U.S. Taxpayers and the men and women who worked so hard to save GM during its darkest time.”

Estrada and others have called on GM to build the Buick Envision in one of the automaker’s US facilities, but the company has declined. Notably, Estrada pointed to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) as one of the bugaboos of jobs for rank and file members, and perhaps the underlying reason for GM’s decision to not build the SUV here.

Summer 2016 Debut

Nevertheless, the Buick Envision is set to arrive stateside next summer and will have its North American debut next month at an auto show in Detroit. The new model is comparable in size to the Jeep Cherokee as well as the Ford Escape, two models from traditional American manufacturers built in the US.

The Buick Enclave has been warmly received in China, where it has been on sale for about a year. Through Nov. 2015, 127,085 units have been sold. Encore and Enclave sales combine to make 60 percent of Buick’s product total, reflecting a current consumer trend toward all things SUV.

Turbocharged Four-Cylinder Engine

Details about the US-spec Buick Enclave reveal that it will be powered by a 252-horsepower (260 foot-pounds of torque), 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine and will feature the brand’s first active twin clutch all-wheel drive system. Other features include IntelliLink telematics, active noise cancellation, LED daytime running lights and LED accent lights, standard 19-inch wheels, a Bose audio system, and three-zone climate control. Popular options include cooled front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and OnStar with 4G LTE and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot.

Pricing details have yet to be announced. Buick says it will aim the standard front- and available all-wheel drive Envision at the Lincoln MKC, Audi Q5 and Acura RDX.

Eight is Enough?

With the Envision’s arrival, Buick’s product line will have eight models as the Envision follows the Opel-inspired Cascada to the market. A ninth model, the Buick Avenir, may yet be announced — a beautiful concept that would slot above the flagship LaCrosse sedan. However, the Avenir remains a concept — its styling cues will be shape the 2017 LaCrosse.

Avenir Concept Leads to New Buick Design Fascia

September 23, 2015 by admin 2 Comments

2017 Buick LaCrosse

The Avenir concept will be reflected in the next generation LaCrosse grille.

Buick will soon sport a new face. And that front fascia will be based on none other than the Buick Avenir concept, a large rear-wheel drive vehicle that itself has not been officially promised.

On Tuesday, Buick disclosed and Automotive News reported that the next generation Buick LaCrosse — due out in the second half of next year for the 2017 model year — will inherit the Avenir’s design. Further, that look will be fan out across the entire Buick line by 2018, creating a unified visage that is at once cutting edge as it is upscale.

The Avenir’s fascia is not a huge departure from the current Buick waterfall grille. But it provides an emblematic look with spears jutting out on both sides of the upper portion of the brand’s trishield insignia. Modifications to the front lighting assembly would include more forceful, yet elegant LED daytime running lights. Notably, the overall countenance would offer a broader presentation.

Buick Avenir

The Buick Avenir concept.

Buick showcased the Avenir at the last round of North American auto shows. That model was shown near or alongside the 1954 Buick Wildcat II concept, the vehicle from which the Avenir’s designers took inspiration.

“The Avenir concept shattered expectations of what a Buick could be and the 2017 LaCrosse promises to do the same,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Buick. “Its expressive design represents a break from convention and highlights the progressiveness in all new Buick models.”

Buick plans to showcase the next generation LaCrosse at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November. The company says that the new flagship will ride on an all-new chassis, representing the latest rendition of the GM’s Epsilon platform. That platform also underpins the Buick Regal as well as the Chevrolet Malibu and the Opel Insignia; all three models are midsize sedans.

Buick LaCrosse

The current generation Buick LaCrosse.

New technologies will complement the updated interpretation. For starters, Buick has promised a five-link rear suspension, claiming that it will provide a “more responsive ride.” Additionally, Buick noted that the suspension is not offered on the Lexus ES. The ES and LaCrosse battle it out for the same customers.

Other changes will likely include an updated telematics system, new audio system choices, and additional safety features. The 2016 edition already has such state-of-the-art features as Apple CarPlay, available 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot, and several collision-avoidance technologies.

Likely, front-wheel drive will remain standard; all-wheel drive will be available; and an eight-speed automatic transmission should debut. Engine choices will be announced at the auto show.

The next generation Buick LaCrosse will chase the Buick Cascada to the market, the latter a 2+2 convertible based on an Opel product with the same model name. The LaCrosse will itself be followed by the next generation Verano compact sedan and then an all-new Enclave crossover.

Buick Envision

The made-in-China Buick Envision.

Two additional products might also be added to Buick’s line up. In the short term, a smaller crossover SUV may slot between the diminutive Encore and the glamorous Enclave. That SUV is known as the Buick Envision, a model sold in China and one that GM would like to import to the US. However, GM must get past union objections — the new SUV might be a “go” once a new labor agreement has been enacted this fall.

The other product would be based on the Opel Adam, a sporty three-door minicar. The Adam’s advent, if it ever happens, would likely be a few model years out, and would most likely arrive only after Buick has revised the balance of its model line.

The upcoming changes to Buick should help keep this brand maintain its part of the 1-2 luxury punch its shares with Cadillac. GM has positioned Buick to go after the lower end of the luxury market, with Lincoln, Acura, Infiniti and select Lexus products in mind. Meanwhile, Cadillac is poised to battle it out with the German brands, including Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Together, the two brands account for more than 400,000 premium and luxury sales in the US each year, with room for further growth.
