Automakers Remain Bullish on Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Mention “hybrid” vehicle to most people and the Toyota Prius comes to mind. That’s expected as the Prius family is by far the most dominant hybrid electric vehicles on the market. Furthermore, Toyota is the chief manufacturer, building twice as many hybrids as the industry combined.

Despite all the attention given to hybrids, these vehicles account for just under 3 percent of all cars on the road today. That’s not an especially tenable market for a vehicle segment touting all things sustainable. And with gas prices currently averaging $2 per gallon, the market for gas-electric hybrids remains especially weak.

Car manufacturers aren’t giving up on the segment and for good reason: automakers must reach progressively higher corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) or fleet averages each model year. By 2025, that average rises to 54.5 mpg, a number that will only be accomplished through much greater adoption of alternative fuel vehicles, including hybrids, pure electric cars, and fuel cell vehicles.

Hybrid adoption isn’t without its challenges, however. The following are valid concerns expressed by potential consumers and adopters alike:

First, such models are usually more expensive than conventional vehicles, costing consumers 10 to 20 percent more than equivalent models. A greater payout up front can inhibit sales. Further, recouping the added cost becomes especially difficult when gas prices are low.

Second, fuel economy doesn’t always match real world numbers. Achieving 50 mpg with some hybrids is possible, such as with the Honda Accord Hybrid, but that’s only when weather conditions are favorable. In extreme conditions, such as during the winter, fuel economy numbers will drop. Hybrids are most efficient during mild weather, but not when it is hot.

Third, battery degradation is a big concern. Whether you’re looking at purchasing a hybrid or an electric vehicle, the battery packs that supply power to the electric motors gradually degrades notes HybridCars.com. Manufacturers help allay such fears by providing extended warranties for the pack and related components, starting at eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. If the battery fails after the warranty expires, a replacement will run in the thousands of dollars. That’s not a cost many consumers are willing to absorb.

Lithium-Ion Batteries

Fortunately, manufacturers have been devising ways to make hybrid vehicles not just more efficient, but longer lasting. Extending vehicle range, critical for electric vehicles, will have a positive spillover effect on hybrid vehicles which utilize smaller battery packs. Manufacturers are achieving greater efficiencies as follows:

One, by going with efficient lithium-ion (li-ion) batteries instead of traditional nickel-metal-hydride batteries. Li-ion batteries provide longer range and offer a faster recharge for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Two, new capacitors are under development. Making battery packs denser and better able to distribute the electrical flow are among the breakthroughs scientists are working on. MIT is testing such batteries and the research is encouraging. Researchers may develop not just a more efficient battery, but one with recharge times paralleling the refuel time of conventional vehicles. Other organizations and universities working diligently to find solutions include the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, Michigan Technical University, and Stanford University.

Car Manufacturers and Hybrids

Manufacturers are working on a number of ways to make hybrids more palpable to consumers, typically by placing them in high-end models, but mostly as a power boost, and not so much for fuel savings.

Indeed, the Porsche 918 Spyder was one such model, powered by a 4.6-liter, V-8 engine along with a pair of synchronous electric motors mounted on each axle. This hyper gas-electric hybrid makes a combined 875 horsepower and 944 foot-pounds of torque, for a vehicle that can be operated in front, rear, or all-wheel drive modes.

Another super car, the Acura NSX, is also a hybrid. This all-wheel-drive model is powered by a mid-mounted twin turbo V-6 gasoline engine and comes with a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and three electric motors. Combined, the NSX makes 573 horsepower with an output of more than 500 foot-pounds of torque.

Of course, most consumers do not have the discretionary income to afford either model. With a price tag starting at $156,000 and eclipsing $200,000 with every option taken, the NSX amplifies high price and scarcity.

Making Hybrids Affordable

Coming closer to earth — that would be “purchase attainability” for the rest of us — hybrid adoption will remain low as long as prices are high. Lincoln is currently the only brand selling its base gasoline and hybrid models for the same price ($35,190), effectively absorbing the added cost of the electrified powertrain. That effort has led to more than one in five MKZ models selling as hybrids, well above the take rate for models offering gasoline and hybrid choices.

The Ford Motor Company may be more willing to absorb the cost of a hybrid in a higher profit model, such as the Lincoln MKZ, but like other manufacturers offering a no-cost option in mainstream models may not be a viable solution. Still, to further consumer adoption, lowering the cost of hybrid systems is critical to helping manufacturers reach their goals.

Fall short and steep penalties from the federal government will ensue. Thus, finding a way to cut costs while spreading hybrid usage across more model lines is a must. Technological advancements may ultimately close the gap, building a solid case for hybridization across the industry.

5 Models at Death’s Door

Updated to clarify that the sales numbers are “year-to-date.” 

Automobile manufacturers work diligently to ensure that every conceived product has the potential to become a competitive sales reality. Apart from electric vehicles that have limited interest, automakers design, engineer and build models they believe will make an impact on the market.

The truth is, some models are doomed from the start, failing to capture an audience significant enough to sustain the vehicle line. Although not every model will prove as popular as a Ford F-150, a Toyota Camry, or a Honda CR-V, terrible sales will lead to ruination.

Our list of five models at death’s door reveals a smattering of vehicles we believe are threatened and how each manufacturer may respond.

1. Honda CR-Z

Honda beat Toyota to the US market in 1999 with its first hybrid, the Insight. Six months later the Prius arrived and Honda hybrids soon became an afterthought.

Honda offered and pulled the Insight twice in the face of withering sales. It has also canceled the Civic Hybrid and pulled the plug-in Accord hybrid, but it still has the conventional Accord hybrid and the tiny CR-Z.

The CR-Z hybrid is a sporty coupe, a two-seat model powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine making a net 140 horsepower and paired with a 6-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission with paddle shifters. Its near $20,000 price hasn’t helped sales, with just 1,562 registered buyers through the first seven months of 2015.

Although these numbers are off by a third over 2014, Honda intends to keep the CR-Z around and will present a refreshed coupe for sale this November. The diminutive hybrid makes 36 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway, and the new model will gain a refreshed fascia with a new lower air dam, larger brakes, and an upgraded infotainment system. The current sales tally may scream “cancel,” but Honda will stay with the CR-Z. At least for now.

US Holden fans were enamored with the Pontiac G8, a full-size rear-wheel drive model imported from Australia. When Pontiac died, GM did not quickly move the model over to Chevrolet.

Well, the Chevrolet SS stepped in where the Pontiac G8 left off, moving the steering wheel to the left side and giving this Holden Commodore a proper treatment. Some say that the SS handles as well as a BMW 5 Series, but for thousands of dollars less. In any case, the SS has served as a niche big sedan as the Chevy Impala is clearly the go-to model for the brand.

Unfortunately, sales for this 415-horsepower naturally aspirated beast measured just 1,855 units year-to-date through July. But that alone won’t end this vehicle’s run — GM is shutting down its Australian manufacturing operation by 2017 and it won’t be bringing Holden tools and dyes to North America to extend this vehicle’s run.

3. Kia K900

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Kia K900, although year-to-date sales of 1,190 vehicles through July are a reason for concern. The K900 is based on the over-the-top Hyundai Equus. Both models advance European styling, but at a budget price.

That this model is a Kia may be part of the problem. That the Equus is sold in the same market doesn’t help either. With a price starting below $55,000, it is a bargain compared to the BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Trouble is that beyond its palatial feel and generous amenities, it doesn’t measure up against Europe’s cream of the crop.

Despite weak sales and LeBron James’ endorsement, sales will be hard pressed to reach 200 units per month. Yet, don’t look for Kia to cancel the model as Hyundai is readying an updated Equus. As it currently stands, whatever Hyundai makes, Kia takes — the two Korean manufacturers are joined at the hip and the K900 will likely be given some additional time to catch on. After all, it has been on the market for just the past year.

4. Cadillac ELR

One of the worst selling models offered by a luxury brand is the Cadillac ELR. This model is underpinned by the same platform that powers the Chevrolet Volt, GM’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The body is different as this wedged 2+2 coupe is based on the jazzy Cadillac Converj design.

So, what’s the problem with the ELR? Everything, especially its price. With an initial sticker price of $75,995 in a bid to compete with the Tesla Model S, the Cadillac ELR was simply too costly. GM shaved the price to $65,000 and with the federal tax credit its final price fell to $57,500 or nearly twice the amount you would pay for the Volt.

Analysts have been calling for GM to dump the ELR, as only 659 units have sold through the first seven months of the year. However, GM has outfitted the 2016 edition with steering and suspension enhancements, and now offers more power via sport mode. Will GM kill the ELR? Not yet and maybe not as long as its stands by the Chevrolet Volt.

5. Scion iQ

Three seats are better than two, but when you have a car as small as the A-segment Scion iQ, you need to give people a compelling reason to buy one. The iQ operates in a constricted city car segment initiated by the Smart ForTwo and since joined by the Fiat 500 and the Chevrolet Spark.

The four-seat Spark has been a surprise hit for GM and is averaging more than 3,000 units sold each month. The Scion iQ, however, has only registered 449 units sold for the year through July. But the Spark is priced $3,000 lower than the iQ, has more room, and gets better gas mileage. It also offers a broader selection of amenities, including OnStar 4G LTE.

The Scion iQ is already history as Toyota announced back in January that its demise was imminent. With gas prices trending toward $2 per gallon and larger models selling for less, the little Scion was an experiment that just did not pay off.

Endangered Species

Our fabulous five represent a portion of the slow sellers that are endangered species. Other models that are near death’s door include the all-electric Mitsubishi i-Miev, the Ram Cargo Van, and the Lincoln MKT.

Certain slow-selling niche models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan GT-R, and Audi R8 are probably safe for the simple reason that they continue to help draw people to showrooms and place a halo over the brand. Consequently, our five do not have that same distinction.

Price Cut, More Power for the 2016 Cadillac ELR

GM is staying with the Cadillac ELR despite a paucity of sales. For 2016, this exquisite coupe will benefit from a price cut and notable changes to its technologies. Those changes, however, will provide only modest gains for the ELR.

The General Motors Company is nothing if not persistent. The Detroit-based automaker has been working diligently to advance vehicle electrification, by moving forward with a project that was started more than a decade ago and has yielded the Chevrolet Volt sedan, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.

The Volt has not sold in the numbers GM has hoped, but the company is sticking with the technology and will be rolling out a second generation model for the 2016 model year.

But the Chevrolet Volt is not the only model that is derived from what GM calls the Voltec propulsion system. Three years after the Volt’s release, the Cadillac ELR hit the market, a wedge-shaped and upscale coupe. While the Volt has seen some bright moments in its five-year model run, the ELR has languished throughout its brief tenure.

GM plans to give the ELR a much-needed boost when the 2016 edition rolls out later this year. Indeed, the automaker will retrench the sticker price by $10,000 and give it a much needed power hike. Additionally, new technologies will also be offered, including GM’s OnStar with 4G LTE and a built-in hotspot.

These moves will allow Cadillac to continue to offer a pair of smaller coupes in its deployment as the ELR will remain for sale alongside the ATS Coupe. The CTS Coupe was retired after the 2014 model year.

As for its design, critics have applauded the ELR, based on the earlier Converj concept. That modernistic look — along with its advanced technologies — may have saved the day for a vehicle that recorded just 1,310 US sales in 2014.

Explained Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen in a related press release, “The upgraded ELR offers enhanced driving performance for buyers seeking uncompromising luxury and exquisite craftsmanship with electrification technology. It is unique in the luxury category, in that it completely eliminates conventional concerns over driving range, which has been the Achilles’ heel of other competitors in the luxury segment.”

Notably, that Achilles heel might describe the Tesla Model S, a pure electric vehicle with a driving range of up to 250 miles. However, fast charging units strategically placed across the United States have mitigated at least some of those concerns. Moreover, Model S sales in the US alone were about 20,000 units in 2014.

Steering and Suspension Enhancements

As for 2016, the Cadillac ELR will see changes inside and out. Steering and suspension upgrades will be realized through a revised calibration of the Hi-Per Strut front suspension. Additionally, the coupe receives increased front spring rates and a stiffer rear axle, stiffer bushings, revised calibrations for the Continuous Damping Control system and other changes affecting steering calibration.

New to the ELR line is an available Performance Package to provide a more involved driving experience. These changes will bring in 20-inch performance tires shod with sport wheels, what Cadillac says will increase lateral grip by 10 percent. Front Brembo four-piston brake calipers and new rotors will help improve stopping distance. Further changes include a new, sport steering wheel.

More Power Via Sport Mode

The Voltec propulsion system enters its second generation and when operated in Sport mode will move the Cadillac ELR from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.4 seconds, down from 7.9 seconds to the previous model. In addition, the Regen on Demand technology that improves energy regeneration is back. It also serves to slow the vehicle when entering a turn or a move out of an exit. The system is accessible via steering wheel paddle shifters, much in the same way that automatic transmissions provide a manual mode.

It is important to realize that range is the “be all and end all” for EVs. Because the ELR harnesses a 1.4-liter gasoline generator (engine) it can claim a 330-mile range for this coupe. And travel can be quickly resumed by stopping at a service station and replenishing the 9.3-gallon fuel tank. The 2+2, front-wheel drive coupe can also be recharged in about five hours at a 240-volt charging station.

Wireless Smart Phone Recharging

In case the Voltec propulsion system isn’t enough for buyers, Cadillac will include the WiFi HotSpot technology that is found in other GM products. It provides quick access to the Internet with its 4G LTE connectivity, and supports up to seven devices. Moreover, the 2016 ELR will provide a new magnetic inductive charge spot located on the instrument panel for plug-free charging.

GM has not made any pronouncement about sales expectations for this vehicle. Certainly, that makes for a wise strategy as the historically low sales numbers for all EVs suggests that any gains will be modest at best for the near future.

Grand Cadillac to be Built in Detroit

New model will sit at the top of Cadillac’s model range.

The worst kept secret in the automobile industry is this one: Cadillac plans to build a full-sized, rear-wheel drive sedan that will rival the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Lexus LS and the Audi A8. The top-of-the-range model has only been openly discussed for several years now with two recent concept vehicles, Ciel and Elmiraj, fanning the flames.

On Friday, Cadillac issued a press release announcing that its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant has been selected to build the unnamed flagship with production commencing in the fourth quarter of 2015.

An official preview of the new sedan is months away with GM saying that it would happen in the first half of 2015. Auto Trends has been told that the New York International Auto Show will showcase the new model, with a March 31, 2015, debut tentatively scheduled. The NY auto show will be open to the public from April 3 to 15, 2015.

Another possibility is a Jan. debut in Detroit, host of the North American International Auto Show. Personally, I’m leaning toward Detroit as it is the biggest stage for Cadillac’s most significant model ever.

The Detroit-Hamtramck facility is a logical choice as GM has invested more than $1 billon in the plant over the past five years. The plant currently builds several Cadillac models, including the ELR plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the compact ATS coupe and sedan, and the midsize CTS sedan. Retooling for the new sedan is already done, reflecting an earlier $384 million investment commitment.

No Cadillac Models Replaced

GM also put to rest rumors that Cadillac’s XTS sedan would disappear once the new model arrives. Some analysts have looked at that sedan as a “place holder” until the grand sedan appears, but GM noted that the new model “adds to rather than replaces any model in the portfolio.” Likely, the slow-selling ELR will also hang around for at least another model year too.

Newly installed Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen, formerly with Audi and Infiniti, noted that the flagship model will extend GM’s luxury brand’s range. He also pointed out that the vehicle will lift Cadillac in other ways. “In addition to new technology in the car itself, we are instituting innovative manufacturing techniques to assemble it with the precision deserving of a luxury make,” stated de Nysschen.

Cadillac sales are down 4.7 percent year-to-date in a market that is experiencing double-digit increases. The brand should erase its shortfall by year end as new ATS coupe and Navigator models draw people to Cadillac showrooms.

Omega Platform

The flagship Cadillac will be built on GM’s all-new Omega platform, itself derived from the Alpha platform underpinning the ATS and CTS. Even so, the cost for launching the new platform cannot be paid by a vehicle selling for upwards of six figures, given that fewer than 10,000 units will be sold each year.

Auto Trends believes that there are two models that will ultimately be derived from Omega: Buick’s large coupe, what likely will sport the Riviera moniker, and the next generation Escalade SUV. The most recent generation Escalade was introduced for the 2015 model year, but its run is expected to be a short one. My guess is that the Riviera will debut by 2017 and the Omega-based Escalade by 2018.

Cadillac ELR: 2+2 Luxury PHEV Coupe

You may have heard the narrative: the Cadillac ELR is an overpriced Chevrolet Volt, GM’s attempt to put one over on the masses.

True, the ELR is based on the Volt’s platform, but the similarities end there. In the Cadillac ELR you have a vehicle that is beautifully styled from its elegant and sporty exterior to its artistically crafted interior. It is also a coupe that will undoubtedly have a small take rate, and is priced from $75,000 with the test drive model costing $82,135.

And that small take rate suits GM fine. Indeed, if 5,000 people snap up the Cadillac ELR for the year, GM says that it will be pleased. Because the ELR is not meant to appeal to anyone but a small segment of the driving populace, people that value a fuel-efficient, clean driving and technologically advanced luxury coupe.

Converj Concept to ELR Reality

The Cadillac ELR is based on the Converj concept, a model that made its debut at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The production model is very close to the look of the concept with a B-pillar (center) added and a less steeply raked rear deck present. It offers the current look of Cadillacs Art & Science design language with its wedge shape, chiseled accents, and sculpted body panels.

My week with the ELR started during a warm spell and ended when a paralyzing snow storm struck central NC. Before the storm arrived I finished my driving, having discovered the intricacies of this fine coupe.

And with no charge port in my home, the only way to get a recharge was to plug it into my homes 110-volt outlet. But, its handlers had already nixed that idea, leaving me to find creative ways to keep the battery pack charged.

Electric Propulsion System

And that lithium-ion battery pack is what stores electricity to give the Cadillac ELR its 37-mile electric-only range. When the electricity runs out, a 1.4-liter four cylinder gasoline engine takes over. Only it doesn’t work as a traditional gas motor instead, it provides energy to make the electricity that keeps the electric propulsion system going.

So, the Cadillac ELR like the Chevrolet Volt is always powered by its electric propulsion system. Of course, the ideal way to operate this coupe is to recharge the battery as much as possible and to drive it emissions free. However, in the event that you cannot recharge, your driving range is extended to about 340 miles by the gas engine/generator and further extended by a service station fill up.

And there are no worries about getting stranded if you cant recharge the gasoline engine, what GM calls the generator, takes over. Sure, the Tesla Model S offers an extended driving range, but if you’re not driving along Teslas quick charging station highway, you’ll be forced to find a regular charging port too. Yes, Cadillac hopes to attract its fair share of Tesla shoppers with the ELR.

Without a charging station at home, I soon exhausted the 20 miles remaining on the electric-only range as delivered to me. With a full tank of gas, there was another 297 miles of gas-supplied range available, seamlessly switching over approximately 30 minutes into my initial two-hour trip.

Front-Wheel Drive: No Problem

The Cadillac ELR is front-wheel drive, but it doesn’t have the torque steer problem found in similar models. A likely weight balancer here was the t-shaped lithium-ion pack underneath the coupe and positioned along the centerline between the front and rear wheels.

When full performance is realized, as in extended-range mode, the Cadillac ELR delivers 207 horsepower and 297 foot-pounds of torque. That level of performance probably wont satisfy anyone accustomed to what Cadillac models deliver today, but you wont find yourself sweating bullets as an 18-wheeler bears down you youll have enough oomph to get out the way.

And to make things a bit interesting, Cadillac provides four driving modes: Tour, Sport, Mountain, and Hold. Sport mode improves the the suspension, steering, and throttle responses. In Mountain mode, the engine revs higher in a bid to keep the battery charged; in Hold mode you access the electric battery only for optimum efficiency such as in urban driving. The Tour mode is the default and this guy stayed in it nearly the entire time in a bid to gauge the ELRs fuel efficiency.

Public Charging Stations

That meant finding the public charging stations in my area where I could hook up the ELR and get a recharge. Im in the Raleigh area, one of the early adopters of all things EV. Credit the city’s hosting of the 2011 Plug-In Conference for helping to raise EV awareness. That early adoption also extended to several nearby communities including Cary, where I live.

As much as my week with the ELR was about testing its ride, and enjoying its ultra-quiet and elegantly garbed interior, my personal quest was to recharge as often as possible. A library, an arts center, and a town parking garage each offered public charging, free at that.

I quickly learned that these stations are popular and found the same Nissan Leaf recharging at one location several times. At the library, another Leaf showed up and plugged in a model owned by one of the librarians. In total, I hooked the Cadillac up about seven times, ranging from about one hour to as long as 5.5 hours for a complete recharge.

I also kept an eye on the mpg, what combines gas and electric-only driving to provide an equivalent fuel mileage rating. My average for the week was 45.2 mpg and likely would have been higher with a home charging port for convenient recharges. Also, colder weather did have an effect, limiting the electric-only range to as low as 31 miles at times.

Cabin and Rear Seat Access

Besides its innovative electric propulsion system, the Cadillac ELR has luxury credentials that are truly noteworthy. The cabin is covered in handcrafted leather and includes real wood and chrome trim. The front seats are very comfortable, offering power adjustment that extends to the head restraints. Cadillac User Experience (CUE) is one of the best touchscreen boards Ive found, featuring capacitive touch or what senses your approach as you near the screen and adjusts the menu accordingly.

Sure, the Cadillac ELR is not a perfect car and it does have one glaring fault that its interior designers seemed to have missed: the front seat belts do not move out of the way to allow easy access to the back seats. Instead, you have to perform a maneuvering act to get in and out. Doubtful that too many people will buy the ELR for its rear seats anyway what can hold two people in a pinch, individuals who most certainly will be pinched.

Green Credentials Touted

Certainly, the ELR will deliver nominal sales at best for a brand that is enjoying a stellar resurgence. What this model does most is to allow Cadillac to flash its green credentials while adding yet another beautifully styled model to its product line. For Cadillac, these are truly its contemporary glory days and the ELR’s presence adds to that.

Cadillac ELR Pricing and Distribution Set

The all-new Cadillac ELR will go on sale in early Jan., a 2014 model based on the Cadillac Converj concept and underpinned by the platform supporting the Chevrolet Volt. This plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) will retail from $75,995, and has a federal tax credit of up to $7,500 for eligible tax payers.

Surging Cadillac Sales

The ELR arrives as Cadillac sales continue to surge. Through Sept. 2013, GM’s luxury brand is easily outpacing the industry with sales up by 28.9 percent year to date. Early last week Cadillac unveiled the 2015 Escalade, the fourth generation of its super-sized sport utility vehicle. Production for the new SUV begins next spring.

The Cadillac ELR presents some risk to GM especially as it seeks footing in a segment dominated by the Tesla S. Unlike the pure electric Tesla, the ELR runs on electric power only for approximately 35 miles before a small, gas generator kicks in to extend vehicle range. That generator, a 1.4-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine, is the same motor that extends the Volt’s range. Whether buyers will be satisfied with its hybrid capabilities instead of electric-only power is not known. Still, Cadillac is likely to tout its range advantage when marketing the ELR.

Indeed, GM estimates that the total range for the ELR will top 300 miles. Drivers can continue on their route by filling the gas tank at a service station, replenishing the battery system as time permits.

Unique Cadillac ELR Properties

Cadillac’s ELR is far different from the Chevrolet Volt as it has its own body shell and a unique interior. Commented Bob Ferguson, senior vice president Global Cadillac, “ELR is also unique in that it will be offered nationwide within a luxury customer experience, with proven benefits and care extending from the shopping process all the way through the ownership experience.”

And it is that special care that Cadillac has been establishing ahead of time through special dealer training, selling and servicing, especially in white-glove care.

Each Cadillac ELR owner will have an ELR concierge representative to assist with information about battery care, home charging, service scheduling and vehicle updates. A toll-free number has been established for ELR owners exclusively at 855-422-3357.

Cadillac ELR Technologies

As equipped, the 2014 Cadillac ELR features Cadillac CUE with navigation accessible via an eight-inch, full-color capacitive-touch screen. This model also features front and rear exterior LED lighting, safety systems including safety alert seat, lane departure warning and forward collision alert, and an all-new and exclusive regenerative energy system — Regen on Demand™ — what allows the driver to temporarily regenerate energy from the vehicle’s momentum via its steering wheel paddles.

The Cadillac ELR interior is outfitted with handcrafted leather. Authentic wood grain and chrome trim are also present.

Drivers can choose from four driving models including the default Tour, the engaging Sport model, a Mountain mode ideal for hilly terrain, and a Hold mode. When operating in Hold mode, the driver can choose tap either the electric battery or the gas engine to power the ELR.

Looking Ahead

With the introduction of the Cadillac ELR followed by the Escalade later in the year, Cadillac’s line up continues to expand and renew. What hasn’t yet been made known are the brand’s plans for a super luxury model, perhaps one based on what has been teased over the past few years.

In 2011, the Ciel concept was introduced, followed two years later by the Elmiraj concept. Although both concepts are quite different, each suggests that a high-end Cadillac model is possible, perhaps likely given customer demand for similar exclusive products sold by rival brands such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

On Sale Now: Chevrolet Volt

Electric vehicles are a tough sale as high prices keep customers away. The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, one that does not have the range restriction of pure EVs. Still, its steep sticker price has made the Volt a tough sell, something that GM hopes to overcome by offering incentives on 2012 and 2013 models.

Chevrolet Volt Rebates

With a base price of $39,995, the Chevrolet Volt is priced more than twice as much as the Chevrolet Cruze, the model it shares its platform with. The Volt, however, comes with a $7,500 tax credit, effectively lowering that price to $32,495. That’s still about $15,000 more than the Cruze and higher than what some pure electric vehicles such as what the Mitsubishi i-MiEV cost.

Earlier this week, GM announced that it was slapping incentives on the hood of every 2012 and 2013 Volt model. Buy a 2012 Chevrolet Volt and you get a $5,000 cash rebate. Choose the 2013 Volt and you get $4,000 cash back. Some states offer incentives too, which means your final cost for a Volt may drop down to just north of $25,000. This for a vehicle with an approximate 40-mile electric-only driving range; a 1.4-liter gas engine kicks in when the electricity has been depleted.

Pricing and Lease Deals

GM’s move comes as its competitors drop prices on EVs as well. For instance, the five-passenger Nissan LEAF S can be had for as little as $21,300 when all tax savings are taken. Mitsubishi is currently offering a lease deal on the 2012 i-MiEV; a 2013 model has yet to be introduced. Honda has a special lease deal in place for its Fit EV and the Ford Focus Electric offers a similar deal.

EV sales targets have missed the mark across all model lines. Expectations were heady more than three years ago just before the first models rolled out. Nissan has had to scale back its production plans even as LEAF production moved from Japan to Tennessee. GM had high hopes that the Volt would usher in a new era as buyers flocked to the thriftiest vehicles. Embracing green technology, however, comes at a steep price, what many financially pinched Americans have decided is not a priority.

California Requirements

Although the Obama administration would love to see more EVs on the road, it is California that is pushing — even demanding — car manufacturers to fall in line. To keep selling cars in the Golden State, manufacturers must also offer an electric vehicle. So far, Hyundai has managed to skirt that ruling, but as its sales continue to rise it can no longer drive through that loophole.

Indeed, the Hyundai BlueOn appears headed stateside, a vehicle the Korean manufacturer hoped it would not have to export. The company still expects to begin shipping its first hydrogen-powered fuel cell cars in 2015, a model that would meet California’s requirements. However, the Hyundai EV looks like a go, but it may lose its odd name before it hits our shores.

Even as GM has trouble selling its Chevrolet Volt, a second model will debut early in 2014. That model is the Cadillac ELR, a luxury coupe with chiseled features. Its price has not been announced, but likely it will sell for at least $60,000. That’s a price the well-heeled buyer can afford, but their willingness to buy one may not align with GM’s expectations.

Luxury Electric: 2014 Cadillac ELR

It will have taken nearly five years for the Cadillac Converj go from concept to reality, but the wait may well be worth it. This chiseled front-wheel-drive coupe goes into production in late 2013 and has a new name too: the 2014 Cadillac ELR. The ELR or extended luxury range model is a 2+2 coupe that is based on Voltec technology.

Concept to Reality

The Cadillac Converj seems much less radical today than it did when it made its debut at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. We’ve gotten used to seeing Cadillacs art & science technology displayed all over the place and in the intervening years the Cadillac CTS Coupe has also rolled out.

Voltec technology is GM terminology to describe its line of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that started with the Chevrolet Volt. Since the Volts release the Opel Ampera and Holden Volt have taken a bow, but the Cadillac is the most radical departure from the original design. Whereas the Chevrolet, Opel and Holden models are sedans, the Cadillac ELR is a coupe and a handsome one at that.

Gas and Electric

Under the hood sits a 1.4-liter in-line four cylinder engine. This 16-valve engine is equipped with sequential multi-port fuel injectors and electronic throttle control. It is paired with a single speed hybrid transmission. Electric drive power comes from both a drive motor and a generator motor to make a net 207 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque.

An electric-only range of 35 miles can be extended by more than 300 miles thanks to this models gasoline engine. For most of the initial 35 miles you can drive on electric power with the gasoline engine kicking in only at certain times as in when extra power is needed. Once the battery system is down to about 20 percent capacity, a switch to gasoline power automatically kicks in. You can then continue on your drive and fill the tank up at gas stations, recharging the ELR when you stop for the night.

The Cadillac ELR sits on 20-inch cast aluminum wheels set within all-season tires. This model has a 106.1-inch wheelbase and is 186 inches long, 72.7 inches wide and 55.9 inches tall. Weighing in at just over two tons, the Cadillac ELR offers 9 cubic feet of trunk storage capacity.

A Distinctive Model

Will the Cadillac ELR sell well? That depends on how you define well. Mostly, this car will serve as a halo model, enabling Cadillac to tweak its competitors as it will be the only luxury brand with such a model. That distinction probably wont last, but it could attract buyers to the brand that might otherwise have looked elsewhere.

Cadillac ELR to Make Detroit Debut

Voltec technology comes to Cadillac.

The Cadillac ELR, a four-passenger electrified coupe, will make its formal debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this January. This vehicle, based on a modified version of the platform that powers the Chevrolet Volt, will be built at Detroit-Hamtramck with production expected to begin in late 2013. GM made its announcement today and sent out a shadowy teaser photo for public consumption.

Converj Concept

The ELR is an extended-range electric vehicle with a backup gasoline engine. Its body, however, may be its most notable feature as it is based on the concept Converj, a model first showcased at the 2009 NAIAS. The vehicle was green-lighted, canceled and resurrected as GM worked through bankruptcy and its reorganization, with GM giving this car its go ahead in 2011. In October, the automaker announced that it would invest $35 million in the plant to ready it for ELR production.

Bringing the ELR to the market comes as GM ramps up Cadillac visibility in North America and abroad. In 2012, Cadillac was given two new models the larger XTS sedan and its all-new ATS compact sedan. The Cadillac ATS has been welcomed with critical acclaim, evoking comparisons with the segment-leading and benchmark-setting BMW 3 Series.

New Models

New Cadillac products in the pipeline besides the ELR are the next generation Escalade, an updated CTS sedan and possibly several new body styles based on the ATS. Cadillac may also bring to the market a smaller SUV to slot below the Escalade.

Bringing the ELR to the market presents a significant risk to GM, but it does allow the company to spread out its EV engineering costs across more model lines. The Chevrolet Volt built alongside the Opel/Vauxhall Ampera for European markets and the Holden Volt for Australia. Sales of the Chevrolet Volt this year are running at a pace that is more than double what GM sold in 2011.

Unlike the Volt and Ampera, the ELR will target a different buyer as its price point will likely begin north of $60,000. That’s about $20,000 more than the Volt for a vehicle that seeks to establish a footing in the luxury segment. Then again, in this segment price is rarely a chief factor for car shoppers.

GM Invests $35 Million For Cadillac ELR Plant

The Chevrolet Volt will soon be joined by an upscale cousin. The Cadillac ELR, a svelte coupe that is based on the Cadillac Converj concept, will go into production in late 2013. This car will be built at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant in Michigan, a manufacturing facility that will receive a $35 million upgrade to handle production of the extended-range Cadillac ELR.

Keynote Speech

GM announced its investment at the SAE Convergence Conference in Detroit today. Mark Reuss, General Motors North America President said in his keynote address, “The ELR will be in a class by itself, further proof of our commitment to electric vehicles and advanced technology. People will instantly recognize it as a Cadillac by its distinctive, signature look and true-to-concept exterior design.”

The sleek Cadillac ELR will be powered by an electric propulsion system that features a T-shaped lithium-ion battery, an electric drive unit and a four cylinder engine. That engine is expected to be different from the one used in the Chevrolet Volt. Indeed, although the two models share many of the same technologies, the bodies will be strikingly different. The ELR’s interior will be unique too from the roof liner to the dashboard and down to the floor panels.

Customer Base

GM has yet to announce pricing for the ELR, but this car will seek to capture a customer base that includes current luxury car buyers as well as electric vehicle enthusiasts. Volt currently retails for about $40,000 and ELR is expected to top $60,000. Cadillac has not released production goals for this vehicle yet.

Along with the ELR, Cadillac is in the midst of its most aggressive new model line rollout ever. For the 2013 model year, both the XTS and ATS were introduced. A new version of the Escalade is up next and both the CTS and SRX will be updated soon thereafter. Its compact ATS line will most likely expand too, perhaps including coupe, convertible and wagon models to effectively compete against the BMW 3-Series.

GM is also moving Cadillac global and has tasked Robert E. Ferguson with the job of leading Cadillac. Ferguson reports directly to GM CEO Don Akerson. Cadillac is gaining sales in China and is increasing its presence in Europe. Look for GM to match Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz in global reach, with the ELR included in that effort.

Michigan Plant

Detroit-Hamtramck will continue as the sole operating facility for GM’s extended-range electric vehicles. Along with the Cadillac ELR, the plant produces the Chevrolet Volt, the Holden Volt and the Opel Ampera, the latter vehicles exported to markets in Australia and Europe respectively.
