The once dominate minivan segment continues to shrink as consumers embrace crossovers. In reality, the two segments are closely related as minivans rival three-row midsize SUVs in size.

The difference is, of course, in exterior utility — crossovers offer available all-wheel drive, while all minivans (except for the Toyota) supply front-wheel drive alone.

But minivans win the interior utility award as these models typically have excellent available storage space, especially with the second- and third-row seats folded or removed. Lots of interior storage space, including cubbies, are another reason why families haven’t entirely abandoned the segment.

And Then There Were Five

The minivan segment is down to five players. The Dodge Grand Caravan, based on an older minivan style, remains the segment sales leader, followed by the Chrysler Pacifica. The Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, and Kia Sedona round out the market. Nissan, Hyundai, Ford, Mazda, and Chevrolet are among the brands that once participated in the market, but no longer do.

Only one of the five is offered as a hybrid and surprising to some it isn’t the Toyota Sienna. Instead, the Chrysler Pacific Hybrid tackles the segment without competition. Further, this model is a plug-in hybrid, which means it can run on electric-only power for about 33 miles before it needs a charge.

Chrysler offers the 2019 Pacifica Hybrid in Touring Plus ($39,995), Touring L ($41,995), and Limited ($44,995) trims. Add $1,095 for the destination charge. The automaker sent a Limited model to my home for my review.

That test model cost just a few dollars shy of $50,000, which sounds like a lot of money for this vehicle. However, the cost does not take into account a $7,500 federal tax credit, which is available to many taxpayers. There are also state and local incentives and perks, which can further lower your final price.

For example, California residents may qualify for an additional $1,500 credit. Furthermore, your visits to the service station are spread out with judicious charging. Depending on how you use your Chrysler you could reduce your annual fuel costs by at least one half.

Exterior Highlights

Auto Trends has driven several copies of the Chrysler Pacifica since its 2017 debut. The new model replaces the Town & Country and is simply a better looker than the previous model.

And that isn’t easy to do, given how the minivan silhouette is roughly the same among all models. What Chrysler did was inject elegant touches to the front fascia and rear roof pillar and gave the side greenhouse a more pulled in look. Other touches such as handsome wheel designs, LED lights, and carefully placed chrome embellishments score in our book.

The differences between standard and hybrid Pacifica models are mostly subtle. The obvious differences include hybrid badging across the body. You’ll also notice unique wheels, which were designed to maximize fuel efficiency.

Interior Highlights

Entrance to this minivan (as well as with competing models) comes by way of traditional swing-out front doors or through a pair of sliding rear doors, the latter offering second- and third-row seat access. Open all doors and raise the liftgate and you can better grasp any minivan’s interior space and how to adjust it to your needs.

2019 Chrysler Pacifica HybridUnlike the standard Pacifica, the second-row seats do not fold away. Instead, they fold down. The placement of the lithium-ion battery pack underneath the vehicle makes hiding the seats impossible. Happily, the third-row seats do fold into the floor, representing this automaker’s stow ’n go seating layout.

And also unlike the standard model, the Pacifica Hybrid seats seven passengers, not eight. The loss of one seat comes as Chrysler only offers a pair of captain’s chairs in the second row. In any case, the Pacifica Hybrid offers realistic room for seven — families should find ample room for their passengers and all their gear.

One of the specialties of a minivan has everything to do with interior storage compartments. Yes, some crossovers have made significant strides in recent years to supply minivan-like layouts, especially in the number of drink holders, but storage still trails.

2019 Chrysler Pacifica HybridThe Chrysler has a clean and well-organized center stack with a wonderful pull-out drawer at its base. That base “floats” above the floor, therefore you’ll find an open storage compartment on the floor. Further, the expected big storage compartment underneath the front armrest simply triples that abundance — with all three you’ll find ample space to hold a purse, diaper bag, snacks or what have you.

As a driver, you’ll find a minivan with excellent forward sightlines, ease of access and egress, and a comfortable seat. That seat offers eight-way power control with four-way power lumbar support across all trim levels. The front passenger seat also offers eight-way power on the Limited trim or as part of a package on the Touring L.

Premium cloth seats are standard; the middle trim has perforated leather. Top Nappa leather appears on the Limited trim. Both second-row seats slide forward and drop, with ample access to the last row. Available heated and ventilated front seats make this minivan all that more desirable.

Safety & Technology

We don’t have the crash test scores yet for the 2019 Pacifica, but the model achieved a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for 2018.

Chrysler equips the Pacifica Hybrid with blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic detection. You’ll also find front and rear parking assistance (sensors) and a backup camera.

The top-trim Limited bundles lane departure warning, forward collision warning, parallel parking assistance, and a surround view camera in an Advanced SafetyTec Group package. That package costs just $995 and also includes adaptive cruise control, advanced brake assist, and automatic high beam headlamp control — we think this cost is a bargain and a package worth taking.

Chrysler offers a UConnect 4 infotainment interface with an 8.4-inch touchscreen display. The system is easy to use with its clear, crisp display buttons. This voice-command system includes six speakers, Bluetooth, HD Radio and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility.

Available upgrades include an Alpine 13-speaker system or a 20-speaker Harman Kardon package. Navigation is standard on the Limited edition, but is optional elsewhere. Overall, we like the standard and available safety and technology features of this model.

On the Road

The last thing anyone wants with a minivan is a sluggish vehicle. Happily, Chrysler found a satisfying place where the Pacifica Hybrid delivers ample power, while maximizing fuel economy.

That power comes by way of a 3.6-liter V6 engine teamed with an electrically controlled automatic transmission. Also at work are a pair of electric motors, what propels this hybrid under electric-only conditions. The two motors allow this model to travel an EPA-estimated 33 miles on electricity alone, although those numbers will vary under a variety of load and atmospheric conditions.

But when teamed with the electric motors and the special transmission, it is ultimately optimized for performance. You’ll notice when you step on the accelerator that the engine eagerly complies. The moment you release the pedal, regenerative braking kicks in, slowly the vehicle. This type of braking also produces electricity, supplying another source for charging the battery.

It’ll take you about 2.5 hours to charge the Pacifica Hybrid when connected to a 240-volt or public charging outlet. When done, simply disconnect, close the door (found ahead of the front wheel on the driver’s side) and take off. Immediately, you’ll notice that the minivan is operating in electric mode as it silently moves forward. Under hard acceleration, the gas engine kicks in, but you can otherwise drive without it until the electricity is depleted.

Under all circumstances, the Pacifica Hybrid supplies a quiet and comfortable ride. There is no performance side to speak of, which means that steering is light, handling is uneventful and braking is firm. You’re not going to slalom with any minivan, but body roll here is tolerable.

Plug-In Hybrid Parting Thoughts

With the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, consumers have two things to consider:

1), whether to purchase a minivan in the first place, and

2), if they should consider the segment’s lone hybrid model.

Some consumers won’t consider a minivan, simply preferring a crossover with available all-wheel drive. Though Chrysler doesn’t have a crossover to offer, the three-row Dodge Durango matches the Chrysler in passenger space and offers superior towing and more engine offerings. Still, a crossover doesn’t have sliding doors and in the case of the Chrysler, the storage options don’t match the minivan.

The extra cost of the hybrid means starting your search paying $13,000 more for a base model. But that difference is deceiving as the hybrid starts with the Touring Plus trim, which is $7,050 more than the similar standard model. Take into consideration the government incentives and your fuel savings, and the Pacifica Hybrid’s value proposition improves steadily year over year.

Waymo Expands Commitment to Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

The minivan segment continues to contract with Nissan the latest manufacturer to make an exit. Only one manufacturer, Fiat Chrysler (FCA), has managed to avoid the double-digit losses experienced by its competitors, thanks in large part to demand for its newest model, the Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid.

FCA may have found a minivan ally in Waymo, an autonomous car development company owned by Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Internet-giant Google. In 2016, FCA delivered 100 Pacifica Hybrid models to Waymo for driverless car development and testing. In 2017, Waymo placed a second order, this one for 500 units.

Today, FCA announced that Waymo placed another order, this one for “thousands of vehicles,” in an expanded effort to apply its self-driving technology to a mass production platform.

“In order to move quickly and efficiently in autonomy, it is essential to partner with like-minded technology leaders,” said Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. “Our partnership with Waymo continues to grow and strengthen; this represents the latest sign of our commitment to this technology.”

Phoenix Deployment in 2018

Waymo’s autonomous ride-hailing service will launch later this year in Phoenix. The additional order will enable Waymo to expand beyond Phoenix to test its technology in 25 cities scattered across the United States, including Detroit, Atlanta and San Francisco.

“With the world’s first fleet of fully self-driving vehicles on the road, we’ve moved from research and development, to operations and deployment,” said John Krafcik, CEO of Waymo. “The Pacifica Hybrid minivans offer a versatile interior and a comfortable ride experience, and these additional vehicles will help us scale.”

Waymo’s first test of autonomous vehicles, comprised of retrofitted Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids, was held in November 2017. The experiment meant that no driver was behind the wheel, although technicians were present. The effort was a success and marked the first time a vehicle achieved Level 4 autonomy as classified by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Waymo and FCA Collaboration

The modified Chryslers come equipped with Waymo’s suite of autonomous hardware as well as its self-driving software. So far, the ride-hailing company has put more than 4 million real miles on the Chrysler fleet and billions more in simulated testing.

Waymo engineers work closely with FCA engineers to ensure that Waymo technology is successfully integrated into each minivan. Chrysler says the minivan’s electrical, powertrain, chassis and structural systems are what make the Pacifica Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, ideal for accommodating Waymo’s self-driving technology.

With Waymo increasing its commitment to the Pacifica Hybrid further, can a stake in Fiat Chrysler be far behind? Auto Trends believes this to be so.

PHEV Minivan: 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

The industry’s first-ever hybrid minivan has arrived.

The all-new Chrysler Pacifica is now joined by a plug-in hybrid available in two trims:
Premium and Platinum.

Chrysler arrived late to the hybrid game releasing 2009 MY Dodge Durango Hybrid and Chrysler Aspen Hybrid models in the summer of 2008. Sharing the two-mode hybrid system developed jointly with GM, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, the Chrysler duo were discontinued a few months later as Chrysler’s survival was in doubt.

But Chrysler was far from done with vehicle electrification, an important way for manufacturers to meet ever-rising fuel economy requirements. Models such as the all-electric Fiat 500e were developed for California, but as for the type of model with potentially wider appeal — a hybrid — nothing followed. Until now.

Introducing the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid puts Fiat Chrysler back in the electrification limelight and does so in a significant way. This is no ordinary hybrid either. Instead, Chrysler went directly to a plug-in version, skipping the standard hybrid completely. Therefore, when you read “Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid” this actually means “Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid.”

The Pacific Hybrid hit the market nearly a year after the all-new Pacifica arrived, replacing the previous Chrysler Town & Country. Both the Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid are 2017 MY vehicles, despite the late start for the hybrid. Yes, the Dodge Grand Caravan is still being produced, but it is based on the previous generation minivan. The Pacifica/Pacifica Hybrid represent today’s engineering and technology — the here and now.

Hybrid Energy Drive

The two models are powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine with the hybrid operating on the more efficient Atkinson cycle. An electrically variable transmission works in tandem with a pair of electric motors to send power to turn the front wheels; one of the motors does double duty as a generator. Electricity is stored in a lithium-ion battery pack located under the second-row seats and is tapped at various times in the drive cycle.

The advantage of a plug-in hybrid over a standard hybrid is electric-only range, something the former provides, but the latter doesn’t except in short spurts, typically of up to one mile. And not all hybrids can do much more than an electric-only crawl around the lot as you look for a parking space.

Chrysler says the Pacific Hybrid has a 33-mile electric-only range when the minivan is fully charged. But that range isn’t precise — certain variables such as air temperature can weigh in. I was able to charge the vehicle several times — all but once at public charging stations — and the feedback listed on the dashboard showed range times of 37, 40, 37, and 35 miles. The lower number was reached when daytime temperatures at the end of my week stayed below 50 degrees or about 30 degrees lower than when I started.

It soon became a game to see how far I could drive without the engine kicking in. Like other PHEVs, the engine doesn’t wait until electricity has been depleted to activate. Under hard acceleration and whenever extra power is needed, the V6 comes alive and works concurrently with the motors to move the minivan. When the extra power isn’t needed, the engine shuts off — as long as there is juice left in the batteries.

A Matter of Style

Unlike some hybrid versions of standard models, the Pacifica Hybrid looks nearly identical to the gas model. The chief differences include the charging port located between the front left wheel and the roof pillar as well as hybrid badging placed here and there. You’ll find some color differences too — mine came in a handsome silver teal.

Inside, floor mats with “hybrid” spelled out are evident too. And the instrument panel has its own information about charging and energy use. At the top of the dashboard you’ll find a four-light arrangement — the more lights activated when charging, the closer you are to a full charge.

You’ll find room for seven inside the Pacifica Hybrid — the gas model offers room for eight or seven. The difference here is that Chrysler offers second-row captain’s chairs for two and doesn’t make the three-row bench seat available. The reason is simple: the Chrysler second- and third-row seats folds into the floor in the gasoline model, but only the third-row seat does that in the hybrid. For beneath the floor in the second row is where Chrysler stores the battery pack — that seat storage area has been repurposed for hybrid means.

As for the cabin in its entirety, the hybrid offers excellent room all around and supplies numerous cup and drink holders, cubbies, and other storage areas to go with it. A long list of standard features include keyless entry with push-button start, power-sliding side doors, full power accessories, multi-zone climate control, and second-row sunshades. A panoramic sunshade is available ($1,795).

Safety and Technology

In all things crashworthiness, the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid claims the highest marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The IIHS awarded the Pacifica Hybrid a Top Safety Pick+ rating, while the NHTSA assigned a 5-star rating to the minivan.

Looking beyond the expected assembly of seat belts, traction and stability control, crumple zones, and electronic brake force distribution, the hybrid offers more than 100 standard and available safety features. Lane departure warning, lane keep assist, front and rear park assist, a rearview camera, and adaptive cruise control are also included or available.

A UConnect infotainment system with an 8.4-inch screen and available navigation headline the tech items. You’ll also get an assortment of apps, USB and auxiliary audio ports, satellite radio, and HD radio. A six-speaker audio system is standard.

Price Comparisons, Tax Credits

At first glance, there is a huge price difference between base minivan models. The 2017 Pacific starts at $28,595 (plus $995 destination) and the Pacifica Hybrid begins at $41,995 (plus $1,095 destination).That’s a difference of $13,400, but it doesn’t explain what you’re getting for the money.

What you have here is a hybrid that comes better equipped than any of the lower grades of the gas model. For example, the Hybrid Premium edition ($41,995) is priced $4,100 more than the Touring L Plus, while the Hybrid Platinum costs $2,500 more than the Limited.

Those are the price points you’ll want to compare, but consider this: the hybrids are eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit in addition to whatever state and local incentives apply. Straight away your net costs come in lower for the hybrid and for families who wanted well-equipped models in the first place, here you go.

Parting Thoughts

Chrysler already raised the bar among minivans when the gasoline Pacifica rolled out in spring 2016. The hybrid places a bow on top of this model and flexes Fiat Chrysler’s green credentials. With 32 mpg fuel economy (22 mpg for the gas model), the Pacifica Hybrid is as efficient as a compact car.

You can expect other FCA models to get the PHEV treatment too, perhaps the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango or both.

You’ll want to compare this minivan with the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, Kia Sedona, and the Nissan Quest, before quickly realize that there’s nothing like the Pacifica Hybrid available. That seems surprising given Toyota’s dominance of the hybrid market, but the Sienna — unlike the similar-sized Highlander SUV — is absent one. Advantage Chrysler.
