GM Diesel Pickup Fast Facts

August 29, 2019 by admin 2 Comments

A third Duramax GM diesel becomes available.

GM’s latest Duramax diesel is this inline-six.

The General Motors Company makes diesel engines under the Duramax name. Most of us are familiar with the 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 available with heavy-duty Chevrolet and GMC models. We may even be familiar with the 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine available in smaller trucks such as the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.

But there is a third engine, this one a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six, which has received much press lately. This particular engine is available in light-duty Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 models. Importantly, it is the first time in a generation we’ve seen a light-duty diesel engine for these models. Thus, we’ll explore certain salient points about the new engine, an option to consider when shopping these models.

7 Fast Facts

1. Delayed by one model year.

GM originally planned to release the new diesel engine late in the 2019 model year. It was the last engine on the docket for the rollout of the all-new 2019 models, but the EPA slowed things down. After a three-month delay, GM decided to release the engines for the 2020 model year. As of publication, the first models equipped with the new turbo-diesel are available.

2. A clean-sheet design.

The new Duramax diesel isn’t a derivative of any other engine on the market. It is a clean-sheet design, which utilizes a lightweight aluminum engine block and cylinder head. Ceramic glow plugs ensure a quicker start on frigid days, thus an engine block heater isn’t needed until temperatures reach -22 degrees F (-30 C).

3. Copious amounts of power.

Small in size, the inline-six is a powerhouse with an output of 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Ninety-five percent of its peak torque is reached at a very low 1,250 RM, with 100 percent sustained from 1,500 to 3,000 RPM. GM marries this engine to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford also utilizes a 10-speed, while Ram has an 8-speed. One further note: neither the competing Toyota Tundra, nor the Nissan Titan offers a diesel option (The Titan XD has a 5.0-liter Cummins turbo-diesel, but that engine is going away after 2019).

4. Robust payload and towing.

Choose the four-wheel-drive Chevy or GMC and you’ll find maximum payload of 1,870 pounds and a top towing capability of 9,300 pounds. The truck’s trailering capabilities will satisfy most needs, with the 6.2-liter gas V8 handling the rest.

5. Top-notch fuel efficiency.

Fuel economy hasn’t always been a big deal in a segment that emphasizes size, payload, and towing capabilities. Indeed, gas engines typically average 15 mpg, which pales in comparison to what cars are making these days. The new engine, however, changes that as equipped two-wheel-drive models earn an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway for a combined 27 mpg. Choose the four-wheel-drive model and these numbers are 23/29/25 mpg city/highway/combined.

6. Best in class fuel economy.

GM claims bragging rights with the new diesel, beating its top competition, namely the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150. Both manufacturers have diesels with nearly identical displacements. The two-wheel-drive 2019 Ram makes an EPA-estimated 20/27/23 mpg city/highway/combined, while the four-wheel-drive version comes in at 19/27/22 mpg. As for the 2019 F-150, its best fuel rating is 22/30/25 for two-wheel drive, while the four-wheel-drive model earns 21/28/24 mpg. It’ll be interesting to track how these numbers hold up under real-world conditions.

7. No price penalty.

Shop for an efficient engine and you’ll pay through the nose for it, right? This seems only logical, but happily, it isn’t so. You’ll still pay extra to acquire this engine, but GM assures us that you won’t. Notably, the company says this about the cost: “It is priced identically to the 6.2L V-8 as a $2,495 premium over a 5.3L V-8 model or $3,890 over a 2.7L Turbo model.” We like that GM is holding the line on prices.

Looking Ahead

The new turbo-diesel engine should serve as a boon for Chevrolet and GMC. Much has been made about the Chevrolet Silverado ceding its second-place sales standing to the Ram 1500 this year, but we think the new engine will serve as an important marketing catalyst. Competitively priced and efficient, we may see a spike in diesel demand across the board. The only significant downside is availability, as not all service stations carry diesel. And for those that do, diesel costs .25 to .50 more per gallon than regular gasoline, yet still costs less than premium-grade gasoline.

New Pickup Truck Shopping Tips

April 3, 2018 by admin 2 Comments

Find the right truck at the right price.

If you are in the market for a new pickup truck, you may be considering a brand you are already familiar with. That’s a sensible approach as pickup truck buyers are typically brand loyal. In particular, they are more likely to stick with what they already know and like. For everyone else, shopping for a new truck requires research in an effort to make an informed decision. The following points are worth considering as you undertake your quest.

When Size Matters

When shopping or purchasing a new truck, there are essentially three size categories to consider: medium, full-size and heavy duty.

These days, your medium truck options include the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon and the slightly larger Honda Ridgeline. Models from Ford (Ranger) and Ram (Dakota) left the market in recent years, although the Ranger is set for a return.

The smaller models offer extended and crew cab choices. You’ll also typically find standard and extended beds.

The main segment for pickup trucks are the full-size models. The Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan compete in this segment, with each supplying a variety of cabin configurations and truck bed sizes.

The heavy-duty truck market is essentially controlled by the American truck manufacturers. The Ford Super Duty, Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500HD and the Ram 2500 and 3500 occupy this segment. Each heavy duty line has oversized gasoline or diesel engines.

Nissan also offers a model that straddles the standard full-size and heavy-duty lines, the Titan XD. This truck has a higher towing capacity than the standard Titan, although models such as the light-duty F-150 now match or beat those limits.

2WD vs. 4WD

What you use your truck for will go far in helping you determine what type of drivetrain layout that is right for you. Two-wheel drive trucks come with the rear wheels while four-wheel drive trucks can activate all four wheels as needed. Choose the latter and your truck can give you the traction and off-road prowess as you desire.

The Honda Ridgeline is the lone exception to the 2WD vs. 4WD debate. This model is all-wheel-drive or powered by its front wheels most of the time with its rear wheels activated as needed.

Payload and Towing

Of big concern to many pickup truck owners is how much weight a truck can carry (payload) and how much weight it can pull (towing). These numbers vary from truck to truck and even from model to model. It is advisable to find the manufacturer’s payload/towing capacity chart, usually supplied right on its sales page.

The payload includes the weight of the driver, his passengers, fluids and what’s stored inside the pickup and in the bed. Towing is the ability of any truck to pull something behind it when hitched — such as a boat, a trailer or a camper. Add towing and payload together and you get your vehicle’s gross vehicle weight.

Consider all three numbers when buying a new truck.

Convenience Features

Today’s pickup trucks come well equipped and outfitted with many of the luxury appointments you can find in a premium sedan, such as leather seats, a heated steering wheel and wood trim. Still, when buying any new vehicle, you should determine which amenities are important to you.

Most pickups offer standard equipment such as an automatic transmission, power accessories, cloth seating surfaces, climate control, an audio system, multiple storage compartments and important safety features such as airbags and antilock brakes.

Popular options include fog lamps, off-road tires, power side mirrors, a navigation system, a rear backup camera, folding rear seats, an overhead console, a rear DVD entertainment system and a lined cargo area.

Truck Fuel Economy

There was a time when buying an economical pickup meant choosing the smallest truck and opting for the manual transmission. These days, your choices have improved considerably, although few trucks get 30 mpg on the highway. These come with a turbo-diesel engine.

What you will usually find are trucks that get 25 mpg on the highway, something both the smaller Toyota Tacoma and larger Ram 1500 achieve. The smaller trucks come with inline-four or V-6 gas engines, while the larger trucks are usually equipped with a standard V-6 or optional V-8 gasoline engines. Again, only select models offer diesel engines.

As for transmissions, you’ll find very few manuals. Most pickups have six-, eight- or even 10-speed automatic transmissions. The few manual gearboxes available come with the median-sized trucks.

Other matters to consider when buying a new pickup is its price, with your cost ranging from just over $20,000 for a basic medium pickup to well over $65,000 for a fully optioned heavy-duty model. Each manufacturer offers a dizzying array of model variations, enabling you to customize your truck to suit your needs and budget.

GMC Introduces Off-Road Sierra AT4 Line

March 27, 2018 by admin 3 Comments

AT4 line added to the 2019 Sierra.

The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 delivers standard off-road capabilities,
such as a two-inch lift and all-terrain tires.

An all-new GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck is on its way, with this model making its debut at a special media event earlier in the month. Just ahead of the start of the New York International Auto Show this week, GMC introduced a new off-road AT4 line for the 2019 Sierra. The new sub-brand targets off-road enthusiasts much in the same way the Sierra’s Denali line serves premium customers.

2019 Sierra AT4 as Equipped

The 2019 Sierra AT4 includes multiple off-road features such as four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case, a two-inch suspension lift, skid plates and a locking rear differential.

“The 2019 Sierra AT4 is designed for the customer who wants an elevated presence on the road and the capability to venture off life’s beaten path,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global GMC. “It’s also the beginning for the AT4 brand, which will be seen on every vehicle in our lineup in the next two years.”

Keep this statement in mind as updates to the Canyon, Yukon, Yukon XL, Acadia and Terrain roll out. The AT4 line will tie in with the brand’s SLT trim, which is one notch below Denali.

The 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 supplies an optional MultiPro tailgate exclusive to the brand.

GMC AT4 Line

All 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 models will offer a standard 5.3-liter V8 engine. It will come with hill descent control, a traction select system and ride on 18- or 20-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. Design elements exclusive to this model include a machined-face, dark-tinted appearance to the wheels.

GMC says that the AT4 will also have the brand’s all-new MultiPro tailgate. Unique to GMC, the tailgate adds to the usual up-and-down opening/closing by adding five additional functions. Flaps and cutouts allow the tailgate to act as a stopper for larger items (think plywood), for ease of lifting cargo, and as a step for access to the bed among other capabilities.

Other features included with the AT4 bring in Rancho monotube shock absorbers, off-road-tuned; red vertical recovery hooks, and special black chrome touches and body-color grille surround.

2019 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 Upgrades

The Sierra AT4 will also offer several upgrades, including GM’s 6.2-liter V8 engine or to its new 3.0-liter inline-six turbo-diesel. A 10-speed automatic transmission works alongside both engines.

Additional upgrades include GMC’s available carbon fiber pickup box. Like the MultiPro tailgate, it is also a brand exclusive. Buyers can also choose a multi-color head-up display or a rear camera mirror. On the safety front you’ll find such driver-assist features as lane change alert with side blind zone alert, front pedestrian braking and low speed forward automatic braking, and surround vision — what supplies a bird’s eye view of the truck.

The all-new 2019 Sierra 1500 goes on sale this fall. Heavy-duty Sierra 2500 and 3500 models will follow separately.

GMC Black Editions.
GMC Terrain and Acadia Black Editions roll out for 2019.

Fade to Black

The AT4 line should bring more buyers and higher profits to GMC and also builds on a pair of new special edition models for two crossover SUVs. Specifically, those models are the compact GMC Terrain and the midsize GMC Acadia.

Beginning this summer, the two crossovers will offer a pair of black editions, adding such features as gloss black wheels; black or darkened grille inserts; black headlamp, taillamp and mirror cap details; and five special exterior colors.

Pricing details for the 2019 GMC product line will be announced at a later date. Meanwhile, Auto Trends Magazine will supply additional New York International Auto Show updates on this page as well as through our connected social media sites.

Handsome Truck: 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD Crew Cab SLT

October 4, 2013 by admin 4 Comments

2014 GMC Sierra SLT
2014 GMC Sierra SLT.

The large pickup truck segment has rebounded from its recessionary lows when sales fell by more than half in 2009 before beginning a steady recovery in 2010. Ford continues to lead the segment with its F-150, but it by no means has the newest truck on the market. The Toyota Tundra along with GMs twin models the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are new for 2014, with the latter a recent Auto Trends test vehicle. That vehicle, a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 44 Crew Cab SLT pickup truck represents the top-of-the-line of the GMC fleet (outside of the Sierra Denali), a fully-loaded model that retails for about $50,000.

Even as fuel prices flirt with $4 per gallon, the market for large pickup trucks remains strong. Indeed, there are five manufacturers in this segment: Ford, GM (Chevrolet and GMC), Chrysler (Ram), Toyota and Nissan, but only Toyota and Nissan sell small trucks. North American pickup truck buyers have demonstrated that they want the room and the utility that the big trucks offer, and manufacturers continue to pour their resources into building and improving these models. And with gas mileage for the smaller trucks coming in at no better than 3 mpg above the most efficient large truck, consumers clearly are not showing much concern about pain at the pump.

GM Truck Brands

That GM continues to sell two truck brands may seem a mystery to some buyers. GM has long contended that GMC targets professionals while Chevrolet aims for the work truck set or the mass market. The sticker price for GMC trucks is higher than similarly equipped Chevrolet models, with essentially the badging the only thing separating the two. When it comes to negotiating your final price for either truck, likely you will find the GMC has the heavier discount. In other words, the final price for both trucks should be nearly the same.

The 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 is priced from $24,090 or just $500 more than the base Chevrolet Silverado. You can buy this truck in regular, double or crew cab configurations, choose from three bed sizes, opt for a 42 or 44 model, and choose from base, SLE and SLT trim levels. Not all configurations are available with every trim level. You also have your choice of three engines: one V-6 or two V-8s. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard across the entire Sierra 1500 model line.

The Test Model

As tested, the Sierra 1500 44 Crew Cab SLT came equipped with the smaller of the two V-8 engines, a 5.3-liter small block motor that has powered many GM vehicles for decades. It is the third generation of this famous engine, an EcoTec3 design that features direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing. GM claims that the new generation of truck engines are more powerful and more efficient, teamed with its proven six-speed automatic transmission to deliver the goods. All three engines shut down unneeded cylinders at highway cruising speeds, operating as four cylinder engines under these conditions. With V-8 powered Sierras, you can see when the change from V8 to V4 and back is made on the digital driver information display as outlined by symbols that switch from a red V8 to a green V4 at various times in the driving cycle.

How do you improve on the slab side styling of todays pickup trucks? For one, you maintain what works including the solid body-on-frame construction that defines these vehicles. Other than that you carefully select what changes will enhance this model without upsetting the status quo.

Exterior and Interior Changes

Because the changes to the 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 are more evolutionary than revolutionary, at first glance you may think that you see the same vehicle as 2013 and earlier models. The changes become apparent when you take note of the projector beam headlamps, the LED daytime running lights and the new chrome grille with black inserts. Black wheel arch moldings, more aerodynamic side mirrors, and available chrome trim on the side mirror caps, the door handles and across the belt line are also apparent. The Sierra 1500 also brings in unique rear bumper corner steps and four movable upper tie downs. New for 2014, the double cab now features front-hinged rear doors with regular door handles. A 6-foot, 6-inch bed option for the crew cab now joins the standard 5-foot, 8-inch bed.

Inside, the cabin is not unlike what you’d find in a premium sedan. On the Sierra Denali level, leather seating surfaces are among the best that you will find, providing a look that parallels Cadillac craftsmanship.

The Sierra 1500 44 Crew Cab SLT offers seating for five with bucket seats up front and a 60/40 split bench seat in the back. That back seat folds up in two sections, providing ample interior storage capacity when needed. Extra storage is available in the two-tiered glove box, the deep storage between the front seats, the front seat back pockets, and the in-door pockets with beverage holders. The front seats are power operated and provide lumbar support. A tilt and telescopic steering wheel column and adjustable pedals provide numerous seating adjustment possibilities. As equipped, this model comes with heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

A new instrument cluster features six analog dials and one digital drivers information display. The digital display can be changed via a steering wheel mounted button that displays local speed, actual speed, trip information, fuel mileage and other driving measurements. To the left of the steering wheel column is a switch that controls the trailering setting and another switch that allows the driver to select 2WD, 4WD and automatic driving modes. Below the center stack, itself outfitted with an oversized GMC Intellink infotainment screen, are switches for stability control, hill descent and other vehicle controls. The SLT edition also comes with dual zone climate control and a nine-speaker Bose audio system.

Safety and Road Highlights

In recent years, GM has been experimenting with various safety enhancements including a collision warning system that features a seat alert system. Specifically, the drivers seat vibrates when an accident is imminent such as when you are about to back into your neighbors hedge. That vibrating feeling is a surprise at first and becomes annoying after a while. Fortunately, you can change the vibration to an audible chime, but some drivers may not like the nanny support whatsoever.

On the road, the Sierra and its small block V-8 worked like a charm. This truck has good acceleration and shifts smoothly as it ascends through its six forward gear ratio. Slam on the brakes and you will come to a quick stop; the ABS kicks in without the overwhelming clunking noise that some vehicles have. Steering is crisp with an electric motor aiding the cause. There was no time to hook up a trailer to demonstrate the Sierras towing prowess, but past tests with similar models showed that the big pickup trucks perform quite well in this department. Still, some shoppers may prefer the larger 6.2-liter V-8 to handle the tougher assignments especially when seeking its 12,000-pound towing capacity.

Final Thoughts

Pickup truck buyers are usually very knowledgeable about what is available to them and may already have cabin layout, engine size and drive configuration settled before shopping. With the GMC Sierra crew cab there are now two bed sizes to choose from and the engine choices have been whittled down from three V-8s to two plug a V-6. The $17,000 price range from base crew cab to the fully optioned SLT should be scrutinized with buyers sufficiently armed with information to drive down their final price.
