Highlights of the 2021 GMC Yukon/Yukon XL

GMC took the wraps off of its next-generation full-size pickup trucks this month, introducing all-new 2021 Yukon and Yukon XL models. These flagship SUVs represent standard and stretched wheelbase versions of its largest utility vehicles and feature many changes, including an upgraded Denali line. The new models will be built in Texas and go on sale this summer.

Here are the highlights of GMC’s dynamic SUV duo:

1. Bigger than before. GMC’s big SUVs get even bigger for 2021. Both models enjoy at least a four-inch extension in their respective wheelbases and are up to half-foot longer than before. Cargo space in the Yukon is up at least 10 percent along with big gains in third-row legroom.

2. Three engine choices. GMC’s familiar gas engines return, although both are updated. This year, the two engines once again feature Dynamic Fuel Management, enabling the big SUVs to operate on as few as two cylinders. The third engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel V6, which is currently utilized in other GMC models. All three engines work with a 10-speed automatic transmission with push-button control.

3. Air suspension and a limited-slip differential. The 2021 Yukons will offer a new air suspension system as well as four-wheel drive with an electronic limited-slip differential. The differential continuously monitors road conditions and reacts by improving traction, handling, and control.

4. New AT4 line. Just as Denali has taken hold as a GMC sub-brand, the AT4 line is doing likewise. For 2021, the Yukon gets the AT4, one that includes several significant features. These include a two-speed transfer case, 20-inch all-terrain tires, hill descent control, a traction select system with off-road mode, skid plates, special AT4 leather-trimmed seats, a unique black interior, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated outboard second-row seats.

5. Upgraded Denali trim. The Denali sub-brand brings a premium look and features to the Yukon line. In service since 1999, Denali is available across the GMC model line, but remains a favorite with the Yukon. Indeed, GMC says some 60 percent of Yukon models are Denalis. This year, the Denali has gained a bolder exterior and an all-new and exquisite interior. The cabin features a new instrument panel, unique seats, and four interior color choices. A larger chrome grille, upgraded exterior lighting, and a special lighting design amplify the outside. Other standout features include the latest magnetic control system, a 15-inch head-up display, rear pedestrian alert, and a high-definition surround-view camera.

6. Robust technologies. We already mentioned the available head-up display. Other improvements include a standard 10-inch diagonal center stack or an available 12.6-inch display. GMC also says that the Yukons’ processing power is five times as robust as before, allowing for future upgrades, including Super Cruise. Super Cruise is a semi-autonomous driving feature currently offered on Cadillac models and may eventually come to GMC.

7. Expanded technologies. Staying with the technology theme, the new Yukons will also benefit from a “broader availability of active safety features.” For instance, automatic emergency braking becomes standard across the Yukon line. The previously mentioned safety features including the HD surround vision camera, rear pedestrian alert, and a rear camera mirror are also noteworthy.

8. Improved trailering features. New trailering features designed to help improve hitching and imbue driving confidence when towing a trailer roll out. These include trailer profiles, trailer tire, pressure/temperature monitoring. and trailer side blind zone alert.

Looking Ahead

The one unknown about the 2021 Yukon has to do with price. Currently, a base Yukon model costs about $50,000, while the XL starts around $53,000. The top-trim models cost about $20,000 more, but with various package selections and individual upgrades, the cost can easily top $80,000. We think the high-end will now approach $90,000, but that’s still far less than the Cadillac Escalade, which can easily top six figures.

In all, the GMC duo will do what is expected, enabling GM to continue to dominate the segment. Indeed, about two-thirds of all large SUV sales are under a GM brand, with Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac easily outselling Ford and Lincoln, its closest competitors.

The History of the Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV, based on the platform underpinning the Toyota Tundra pickup truck. This SUV competes in a narrow segment, one dominated by the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition and represented in later years by the Nissan Armada.

Toyota released the Sequoia in 2001. That first-generation model was built for seven years, then replaced it with the second-generation Sequoia for 2008. That model remains in production until this day, an uncharacteristically long time for a manufacturer to stick with the same generation.

First-Generation Sequoia

Upon its debut, the 2001 Sequoia offered a 4.7-liter V8 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. It is rated at 240 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque. Its fuel economy is abysmal, making just 12 mpg in the city, 16 mpg on the highway, for a combined 14 mpg. At least it runs on regular gasoline.

As always, the Sequoia offers standard rear-wheel drive and available four-wheel drive. Its original towing capacity is 6,500 pounds. Its 11-inch clearance beats the competition. Optional stability control and side-curtain airbags are two other features of note. The Sequoia seats eight, while its domestic competitors seat as many as nine.

A Refreshed Sequoia

In 2005, Toyota refreshed the Sequoia by refreshing the front fascia and grille, updating the taillamps, and rolling out new packages. Other new features included push-button engagement for the four-wheel-drive system and an optional navigation system.

Performance improved that year too as the V8 engine makes 282 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed automatic replaced the previous four-speed. The fuel economy also improved with the 2005 Sequoia rated as high as 14/17/15 mpg city/highway/combined.

Second-Generation Sequoia

With the second-generation Sequoia, Toyota took another page out of the domestic challenger’s playbook by replacing the original model within the usual 6-7 year timeframe. As before, the Sequoia is based on the Tundra’s latest platform. The 2008 Sequoia gained four inches between the wheels although its overall length is extended by just over one inch.

The big news was the addition of a second V8 engine, this one displacing 5.7 liters and making 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. This one works with a six-speed automatic transmission and makes 14/19/15 mpg city/highway/combined.

Among the improvements rolled out were a rear independent suspension and a locking differential on four-wheel-drive models. Other improvements and options included navigation, a rearview camera, a rear entertainment system, Bluetooth, upgraded audio systems, and laser cruise control. The towing capacity also rose to as high as 7,400 pounds.

Changes down through the years included a new 4,6-liter base engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission beginning in 2010. In 2012, blind-spot monitoring became optional on the top-trim model. Beginning in 2013, the Sequoia offered just one engine, choosing to keep the larger of the two V8s.

A Refreshed Sequoia, Take Two

Instead of replacing the second-generation Sequoia, which had already lasted a full decade, Toyota refreshed the model beginning in 2018. Among the new features were standard LED headlights, daytime running lights, and fog lights. Expanded trim levels and new safety features such as automatic emergency braking rolled out.

For 2020, the Toyota Sequoia benefits from additional changes, including expanded driver-assist features, a new TRD Pro trim, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility.

The Future

We doubt Toyota will roll out a new Sequoia. Sales are quite small, averaging 12,000 to 13,000 units annually. That’s less than half the sales the Sequoia commanded when the latest model rolled out and a far cry from the peak 70,817 units sold in 2002. We expect the Sequoia to have at least a few more years left before it rides off into the sunset.

The Suburban is the larger of two big Chevy SUVs.

The largest of all utility vehicles are the various Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Ford, and Lincoln models based on their respective company’s full-size truck platforms. They’re among the most substantial passenger vehicles you can buy, prized for their passenger-carrying capabilities, storage space, power, and towing strength.

Chevrolet markets a pair of models under the Tahoe and Suburban names. The GMC equivalents are known as the Yukon and Yukon XL, while Cadillac markets the Escalade and Escalade ESV. In reality, the two Chevrolet models are nearly the same, although there are a few distinctions of note.

What’re the differences between the Tahoe and Suburban? Mostly, it has everything to do with size.

The Tahoe is big, but the Suburban is bigger still.

The Tahoe sits on a 116-inch wheelbase and measures 203.9 inches long. As for the Suburban, that same platform is stretched to 130 inches with overall length pulled out to 224.4 inches.

Storage capacity heightens those differences.

The 2020 Tahoe has 15.3 cubic feet of storage capacity behind the third-row seat. Behind the second row, there is 51.7 cubic feet. Fold down the second and third rows and there is 94.7 cubic feet of storage capacity available.

Of course, if you need maximum storage capacity, the 2020 Suburban is a clear choice. This one measures 39.3/76.7/121.7 cubic feet, which translates into a substantial increase in the standard and available storage space.

Seating for up to nine.

You can choose your Tahoe in two seating configurations with room for seven or eight passengers. As for the Suburban, a third option is offered: seating for nine. The latter is achieved by choosing an available front bench seat. Happily, that seat can be converted to seat two with the center seat folded.

Third-row legroom.

Some of us cannot imagine sitting in the third row of any vehicle. Other than possible access and egress challenges, the seats are generally not as comfortable as found in the first two rows.

Importantly, legroom is often sacrificed. Here, the Tahoe offers just 24.8 inches of legroom to 34.5 inches in the Suburban. Thus, the Tahoe’s third row is suitable only for children, while the Suburban can hold adults.

That space is slightly roomier than the 33.5 cubic inches in the Chevrolet Traverse, which is the brand’s largest crossover utility vehicle with room for seven or eight.

More Alike Than Not

Nearly everything else about the Tahoe and Suburban is alike, including the exterior design, cabin layout, and mechanicals. Both come with standard rear-wheel drive and available four-wheel drive. The Tahoe starts at $49,000, while the Suburban costs $51,700. The Tahoe has a slight edge in towing, pulling up to 8,600 pounds to the Suburban’s 8,300 pounds.

Lastly, both the 2020 Tahoe and 2020 Suburban are set for a full overhaul for 2021. This follows the 2019 makeover of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, the two pickup truck models that share the architecture with the Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac models.

Nissan Armada Reprise: Platinum Style

Capable 2017 Armada is punctuated by the Platinum edition.

For the second time in three months, Nissan delivered a 2017 Armada for my review. My earlier review offers a thorough inspection of this full-size sport utility vehicle, a model that competes with the likes of the Toyota Sequoia, Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, and the GMC Yukon.

In other words, the Nissan Armada competes in a limited segment, one where customers want all the girth and heftiness found in a big SUV — the better to hold seven or more passengers in comfort, carry generous amounts of cargo, and to supply exceptional pulling power. All five models in this segment deliver as advertised.

For a follow-up review, there are two things worth re-examining on closer inspection. These points include:

2017 Nissan Armada

1. Platinum means luxury.

Nissan offers three trims for the 2017 Armada: SV ($44,900), SL ($49,650), and Platinum ($57,590). Add $1,095 for destination. If you prefer all-wheel drive, add $2,900 to each model’s base price.

The Platinum trim represents luxury as evidenced by the standard equipment offered, including 20-inch machine-finished tinted aluminum-alloy wheels, a three-zone entertainment system with dual 7-inch monitors, heated and ventilated front seats, and a power sliding moonroof.

That’s not all you’ll find in the Armada Platinum. This model also comes with a front and rear sonar system with eight embedded sensors tasked with searching for stationary objects to help you avoid them. Audible warning notification is supplied you when you venture too close.

You’ll also find dual power folding heated side mirrors with puddle lamps, a power rear lift gate, an interior memory system, a heated steering wheel, and wood tone trim. The Platinum trim also includes dual-zone automatic climate control, a navigation system with traffic and weather reports, predictive forward collision warning, forward emergency braking, lane departure warning and prevention, blind spot warning and intervention, backup collision intervention, and moving object detection.

In other words, all the advanced driver assist features are included. Otherwise, choose one the Armada SL trim and you can order these features as part of a $1,770 technology package.

The only package available for the Armada Platinum supplies second-row captain’s chairs with a center console for $450. Fully optioned, you’ll pay about $62,000 for the 2017 Armada — that is, before dealer discounts are taken.

Available leather, wood trim, and a gigantic interior provide the Armada with all the trappings of a premium full-size SUV. Other benefits include very comfortable front seats, a commanding view of the road ahead, a quiet ride, and inconsequential harshness and vibration. As for the audio system, a 13-speaker Bose package is standard across the model line.

2. Performance supplies what you expect in this segment.

A powerful engine is the hallmark of SUVs in this class. For 2017, Nissan updated its 5.6-liter V8 engine, adding direct injection gas and variable valve event & lift systems. As a result, horsepower increased from a fairly tepid (for this class) 317 hp to 390 horses. This engine also has an output of 394 pound-feet of torque. Combined, you’re never at a loss of power.

The other important change has to do with automatic transmission. The previous five-speed automatic was replaced by a seven-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain combination is entirely suited for this model and puts the 2017 Armada on par with its rivals.

When it comes to towing, the 2017 Armada is in the thick of things. It is ahead of the Sequoia’s 7,400-pound towing capacity and matches what both the GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe deliver. Only the Ford Expedition beats the Armada as it utilizes a twin-turbo V6 engine to achieve its 9,300-pound towing capacity.

Press hard on the gas pedal and the Armada supplies a confidence-building roar as it moves away from a full stop. Power keeps delivering as you work your way up to highway speed. Once you’re on the highway, you’ll find ample passing power to help you stay ahead of the crowd. Steering feels weighted, although handling is a breeze with the wheel turning whichever way you want with relative ease. Braking is firm to the touch, bringing this near-three-ton workhorse to a firm and confident stop.

Shoppers who might have expected the 2017 Armada to share its platform with the current-generation Titan or Titan XD are in for a surprise. This model sells as the Nissan Patrol in global markets, an SUV with a slightly smaller wheelbase, but longer overall than 2015 and earlier Armadas (no 2016 model was produced).

The change results in a healthy 20-percent increase in torsional rigidity, something you’ll notice when navigating twisty roads and wherever body roll is a factor. This feature also makes for a safer vehicle, although no official crash testing has been conducted.

Premium, Full-size SUV: 2016 GMC Yukon

Large SUVs are back or at least consumer interest in them continues to rise as fuel prices fall.

The GMC brand is well positioned to respond to consumers’ changing car-buying habits. Nourished chiefly by lower fuel prices, GMC sales increased by 11.3 percent in 2015, nearly double the 5.7 percent pace for the entire auto industry.

Those sales have come as motorists shift their purchase decisions away from cars to trucks and SUVs, the latter two categories the only vehicle types GMC sells. Although GMC is essentially a premium version of Chevrolet Trucks, customers are not especially put off by the correspondingly higher prices. In fact, the brand’s top-end Denali line continues to attract buyers for this North American-only marque.

Speaking of Denali — the apex of the GMC brand — nearly every press fleet model that comes my way is decorated in Denali trim. Yes, this reality tends to skew my reviews to models that are well appointed, leaving out other trim levels worth considering. Indeed, the latest of the test lot was a 2016 GMC Yukon Denali, the standard wheelbase version of this full-size SUV. It was preceded by a 2016 Yukon XL Denali late last year, an extended wheelbase model with an extra 14 inches between the wheels and 20 inches overall.

2016 GMC Yukon

The 2016 GMC Yukon is priced from $48,315 for the base 4×2 SLE model. Add $3,000 to any trim level for a 4×4 version. GMC prices the SLT edition from $57,000, then jumps to $65,325 for the Yukon Denali. Add a $1,195 destination charge to reach your true base price.

GMC offers two engine choices with the 2016 Yukon. A 5.3-liter, V-8 making 355 horsepower and 383 foot-pounds of torque is standard and comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Also available and standard with the Denali trim is a 6.2-liter, V-8 making 403 horsepower and 417 foot-pounds of torque. This engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Yukon Denali takes an ordinary slab-sided, truck-based SUV and embellishes it with chrome or chrome-like trim. Based on the same platform underpinning GM’s full-size pickup truck line — Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra — the Yukon offers a similarly imposing presentation and comes in about a half-step below the Cadillac Escalade in overall refinement and just ahead of the Chevrolet Tahoe (extended wheelbase models are marketed as the Chevrolet Suburban).

Chrome: Here a Little, There a Little

Think “Denali” and you’ll find chrome nearly everywhere — on the grille, surrounding the front embrasures, across the roof rack, trimming the windows, and in other places, including the wheels, step rails, side trim, and to the rear.

All Denali models are outfitted with HID projector automatic headlamps, LED daytime running lights, front fog lamps, and rain sensing wipers. Further, you get power-heated side mirrors with embedded turn signal indicators, 20-inch ultra bright machined alloy wheels, a 17-inch steel spare wheel, and a hands-free tailgate. The test model added 22-inch aluminum wheels with painted inserts ($1,995) and a Crimson Red tricoat patina ($495).

Inside, seating is for eight in the Denali or for seven if the center seat arrangement is replaced with a pair of captain’s chairs as found in the test model. Choose the SLE or SLT editions, and the Yukon offers seating for up to nine.

Keyless Entry and Beyond

Keyless entry provides access to the Yukon’s interior and push button start gets you moving. The Yukon Denali comes extremely well equipped, offering remote vehicle start, power accessories, a power tilt and telescopic steering column, power adjustable pedals, a heated steering wheel, tri-zone climate control, a 110-volt outlet, and power-operated seats. Notably, those seats include power releasing second-row seats and a third-row, 60-40 power split-folding bench seat.

All Denali models come with an 8-inch color touch screen with navigation and a GMC IntelliLink telematics system. New for 2016 is Apple CarPlay, compatible with many smartphones. Connect with your smartphone and the color display becomes an extension of that same phone. The system is easy to use and helps reduce distractibility.

Close your eyes (not if you’re driving!) and the Yukon Denali may lull you to sleep. With the audio system and every other electronic gadget turned off, you’ll soon appreciate the relative quietness of the big SUV, with little more than a murmuration detected, especially when idling. Generous use of sound deadening materials; substantial, cushy front seats; and a soft ride are among this SUV’s more appealing comfort factors. This SUV was built with your contentment in mind and it succeeds in that endeavor.

Turn on the audio system and you have symphony-like entertainment at the ready, courtesy of a 10-speaker Bose audio system with surround sound. A $2,760 Open Road Package brings in a power sunroof, a rear entertainment system, and extends your satellite radio trial from three months to one year.

Center Captain’s Chairs

If you want an SUV the size of a GMC Yukon and seven seat placements is more than enough, I strongly suggest swapping out the middle bench seat for the two captain’s chairs. The middle chairs are nearly as comfortable as what’s up front, offering excellent support for the shoulders, back, hip, and thigh.

You also get a pair of folding arm rests and you’ll enjoy excellent leg room. Besides, with the captain’s chairs present the passenger sitting in the middle position of the third row is the big winner here with unlimited room to stretch out her legs.

Performance and Handling

As previously mentioned, the Yukon Denali gets the larger of the two V-8 engines, delivering optimum power from the moment you first press down on the accelerator as well as when traveling up and down the power curve. Steering is light to the touch with handling uninvolved, yet ideal for making tight turns. Body roll, common to high-profile vehicles is noticeable when taking the twisties. Also, you may find yourself holding tight to the steering wheel when crossing a bridge as side winds buffet the SUV — a common experience with any SUV, not just the Yukon Denali.

Pulling upwards of 8,500 pounds is another bonus feature, plus more than 1,500 pounds of payload. The power boost translates into a one mpg drop in fuel economy, an inconsequential number, especially these days.

Another option for GMC fans is the Acadia, a crossover sport utility vehicle. The 2016 edition is the last for this first-generation model and offers room for seven. Wait a few months and the all-new, second-generation 2017 Acadia hits the market, coming in slightly smaller and up to 700 pounds lighter than the outgoing SUV. GMC began the redesign of the Acadia when fuel prices were still sky high — with just under seven inches removed between the wheels and just over seven inches overall.

Safety Considerations

Sheer size is one of the top safety attributes for any large SUV. While the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated this model, it offers a suite of airbags including the only front center airbag. The usual stability and traction control systems, electronic brake-force distribution, hill-start assist, and brake assist are also present.

Driver-assist technologies can also be had and are standard on the Denali. These features include side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision alert, and adaptive cruise control with front automatic braking. Front and rear park assist, lane keep assist, automatic headlamps, and a safety alert seat are also standard.

GMC Yukon and Competitors

Even so, me thinks that people whose eyes are set on the Yukon or Yukon XL will want nothing less than the largest and most upscale of GMC products. In that case, you may hardly consider the competitors with the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and the Nissan Armada named among them. Without question, include the Lincoln Navigator for good measure.

SUV Aspirations: 2015 GMC Yukon XL

Oversized sport utility vehicles seem like a throwback to a different era for some. For those who own them or aspire to acquire one, these models deliver the best amalgamation of passenger room and trailering capabilities in the business. Fuel costs can be exorbitant, but with the prevailing price of gasoline dropping below $2 per gallon in most states, the appeal for such vehicles has increased once again.

The GMC Yukon is a full-size, traditional rear-wheel drive SUV, available in four-wheel-drive, standard and stretched (XL) wheelbases as well as in Denali trim. Consequently, shoppers have much to scrutinize when considering the Yukon line, a model that competes with the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada.

GMC prices the base 2015 Yukon from $46,990, the Yukon XL from $49,690, the Yukon Denali from $63,770 and the Yukon XL Denali from $66,470. Choose four-wheel drive and you will add $3,000 to your base price. Notably, a fully-equipped stretched wheelbase Denali model can cost you more than $75,000.

For test purposes GMC delivered a Yukon XL 2WD SLT edition priced from $54,735 and equipped with the standard 5.3-liter V-8 engine making 355 horsepower and 383 foot-pounds of torque. Alternatively, a 6.2-liter V-8 engine making 420 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque is available and is also the standard engine found in the top-of-the-line Denali trim level. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, but Denali models get GM’s new eight-speed automatic.

Fully redesigned for 2015, the current Yukon/Yukon Denali offers a familiar silhouette with a refreshed grille, new headlamps and LED lights, redesigned inlaid doors for improved aerodynamics, a modern family of wheels, laminated windshield and front door glass to boost quietness, and a standard rear spoiler. As always, the GMC Yukon is built on the same truck platform that underpins GM’s big pickup trucks, including the GMC Sierra.

Quiet Cabin, Updated Interior

Inside, seating is for seven to nine people. The ideal arrangement may be two bucket seats up front, a pair of captain’s chairs in the second row and a third row bench seat. To offer room for nine, the second and third row seats are replaced with bench seats, but at a significant loss of storage space up front. The test model was a seven-seat SUV, what fully accentuates the cavernous interior.

The Yukon’s interior is dominated by an expansive dashboard, covered in soft touch materials and accented by French seam stitching. Excellent interior lighting, including ambient lighting, chases darkness away from every nook and crevice. All seats are firm and supportive, although third-row thigh support isn’t as good as you would find elsewhere.

GMC offers a long list of standard equipment with the Yukon. All models are equipped with a Bose audio system. An 8-inch color touch screen dominates the center console and provides voice commands, SiriusXM and HD radio, USB ports, auxiliary jacks, an SD card slot, Bluetooth streaming and hands-free calling. You also get tri-zone climate control, power accessories, cruise control, OnStar directions and connections, a 110-volt power outlet, a leather-wrapped tilt and telescope steering column and floor mats.

Move up to the SLT edition from the SLE and this model brings in improved interior lighting, heated and cooled front seats, heated outboard second row seats and a power folding 60-40 split bench seat. As for the Denali edition, this model brings in active noise cancellation technology, a customizable driver display and leather nearly everywhere. Available options include: an enhanced security package, an open road package with a power sunroof and navigation, a rear-seat Blu-Ray/DVD entertainment system, a head-up display and a number of dealer-installed accessories such as a reflective window shade.

The SLE edition provides premium cloth covered seats with leather seats found in SLE and Denali editions. Not surprisingly, the 10-way power driver’s seat places the emphasis on comfort, offering power recline, 2-way power lumbar control and even a 6-way power cushion. That seat plus the adjustable steering column provides scores of positioning permutations to rebuff driver fatigue. Similarly, the front passenger is also spoiled with a thoroughly comfortable seat.

Think hard before you consider swapping out the front bucket seats for a bench seat. Unless you know that you must have room for nine, the added seating space also means that the cavernous storage compartment and console between the front seats will be eliminated. Certainly, there are many other storage areas found in this model — the glove box, seat backs, the doors and behind the rear seat — but chances are you will find the bench arrangement wanting.

On the Road

With no boat, camper or trailer to pull, I cannot comment on the Yukon’s towing capabilities. What I can tell you is that this model is rated to pull from 7,900 pounds (Yukon XL Denali 4WD) to 8,500 pounds (Yukon 2WD) and has a payload capacity that starts around 1,500 pounds and tops out at 1,676 pounds.

To put it another way, you can bring with you a full contingent of people, load up the rear storage area and pull that big boat without much effort. I’m basing my perspective strictly on anecdotal evidence, observing the many SUVs in my area that carry a full load and seem none the worse for it.

Get behind the wheel of any Yukon and you’ll sense that you have full command of the road. In many ways you do as ground clearance, its large tires and the SUV’s overall height make for one imposing model.

What I think will interest most shoppers is the difference between the two V-8 engines. Both provide generous amounts of power, but you will enjoy a near 20 percent boost in power by choosing the larger engine. I can see where that power would come in handy when pulling anything up a hill or even retrieving a large boat from the water.

The Yukon XL extends the standard wheelbase from 116 inches to 130 inches and overall length from 203.9 inches to 224 inches. That’s a different approach then, let’s say the Ford Expedition, where the extra space is consigned strictly behind the third row seat.

The XL’s extended proportions also means this model seems to float down the road. It handles well and makes U-turns without needing a third opposite flowing lane to make that maneuver. Involved driving? You won’t find it. Consume potholes with relative ease? The GMC Yukon does that. For the best suspension you’ll need to upgrade to the Denali as it comes outfitted with magnetic ride control, a suspension system used in the Corvette Stingray, Cadillac CTS and other premium GM vehicles.

The Yukon’s braking system is composed of power-assisted, four-wheel disc, four-wheel anti-lock brakes using “Duralife” rotors and vented front and back. Standard and available safety features include: a front center airbag, radar-controlled cruise control, side blind zone alert, lane departure warning and automatic crash response.

Parting Thoughts

So how much does it cost to fill the tank of a GMC Yukon? Believe it or not, that’s a question that I often get from people that are considering a large SUV. Outfitted with a 31-gallon fuel tank, fill ups would have cost you well over $100 when the price of the regular grade gasoline it takes came in at $4 per gallon. Likewise, you will pay about $65 per fill up for a vehicle (as of this date) that averages 20 mpg under optimum driving conditions.

It is doubtful that gasoline prices will stay down for the long term, so keep that cost in mind when shopping for any large SUV. Moreover, you should expect to pay about $60,000 for a well-equipped standard wheelbase model outfitted with four-wheel drive and many of the amenities mentioned herein.

Revealed: 2015 Chevrolet Suburban

Model names like Corolla, Civic and Beetle seem to have been around forever, but it is the Chevrolet Suburban that takes the prize as the longest continual model in the world. Come 2015 it will celebrate its 80th anniversary, representing 12 generational changes dating to the heart of the Great Depression.

80th Anniversary Model

To mark its anniversary, an all-new model will make its debut in the first quarter of 2014. That model, the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, will be joined by the smaller Tahoe as well as the similar GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. All four models will preserve the body-on-frame truck characteristics that have long defined this line. Unibody construction? Don’t count on it for many more years.

The release of the next generation Chevrolet Suburban comes as large SUV sales continue to rise. This, despite gas prices that are well above $3 per gallon across the country, approaching or topping $4 per gallon in some states. Through the first six months of this year, Chevrolet Suburban sales are up 16 percent, keeping pace with industry-wide growth.

GM is bullish about its big SUVs, profitable vehicles that maintain a loyal customer base. These vehicles are popular with large families, outdoor enthusiasts and are oftentimes marshaled as fleet vehicles, providing the livery support that many companies want. Said Dan Amman, GM executive vice president and CFO, “This is an important and profitable segment and we have set the bar high to ensure we provide our customers with great quality and performance they expect and deserve.”

Direct Injection Small Block V-8

The standard engine for the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban is GM’s small-block V-8 displacing at 5.3 liters. This engine makes 355 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 383 foot-pounds of torque at 4,100 rpm. It features direct fuel injection with cylinder deactivation, the latter shuts down four cylinders at highway cruising speed to conserve gasoline. This engine is teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Chevrolet Suburban adds 14 inches to the Tahoe’s 116-inch wheelbase and is 224 inches long. That’s 20 more inches than the Tahoe. The width for both vehicles is 80.5 inches; height comes in at 74.4 inches. Chevrolet Suburban curb weight ranges from 5,576 to 5,815 pounds, shedding just over 100 pounds in the 4×2 model while maintaining nearly the same weight as the current 4×4 Suburban.

Chevrolet Suburban Amenities and Options

The twelfth generation Chevrolet Suburban brings in many new features including keyless entry with push-button start, an eight-inch color screen with the latest version of Chevrolet MyLink, up to six ports and six power outlets including a three-prong 110-volt outlet, an available rear seat entertainment system with dual screens and a Blu-Ray DVD player, fold flat second- and third-row seats, and a conversation mirror.

A 360-degree radar system is also new, part of a safety package that includes crash avoidance and passenger protection. Other safety features included or available are: forward collision alert, front parking assist, lane departure warning with lane keeping assist, rear traffic cross alert and adaptive cruise control. A center stack airbag, unique to GM, will be included with both the Tahoe and Suburban.

The exterior is marked by the latest Chevrolet truck/SUV fascia and includes projector-beam headlamps. Choose the LTZ edition and high-intensity discharge headlamps and light-emitting diode daytime running lamps are included.

GM says that the next-generation Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe is quieter than the current edition with improved steering and braking feel. This model features a stronger frame, a wider rear track, magnetic ride control with the LTZ edition, standard 18-inch wheels and available 20- and 22-inch wheels, variable-assist power steering, and four-wheel disc brakes.

GM taps its assembly plant in Arlington, Texas, to build its large Chevrolet and GMC SUVs. That plant will begin production of the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban later this year, continuing a long string of full-bodied SUVs that have played an integral part in the North American auto industry.
