2014 Dodge Durango Limited: Classy Crossover

March 18, 2014 by admin 8 Comments

2014 Dodge Durango Limited
Dodge hopes to find you in its sales crosshairs
with this capable Durango Limited crossover.
Shop for a larger sport utility vehicle and you’ll soon find that the market is now dominated by crossovers. These are models that dispense with traditional body-on-frame or truck-like construction in favor of unibody or car-like construction, the latter providing a more rigid frame for a better handling ride. This newer breed of SUVs include models that have made the transition from the old layout to the new style, vehicles such as the Dodge Durango, Nissan Pathfinder, and the Ford Explorer.

The Dodge Durango’s transition to its current platform was made in 2011, arriving after a one model year break. The earlier body-on-frame editions were sold from 1998 to 2009. Now in its fourth year, this third generation model has received a mid cycle product update.

Booming Crossover Sales

In 2013, Durango sales rose by 43 percent over the previous model year, with 60,727 units sold. The Durango is built on the same platform underpinning the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but its wheelbase has been stretched by five inches and its overall length by nearly a foot. The Dodge isn’t a midsize SUV nor is it a full-size vehicle along the lines of a Chevrolet Tahoe, rather it serves a sweet spot that should appeal to many shoppers.

And that sweet spot comes in the form of an attractive body with a sporty face, employing the same level of ruggedness found on the Dodge Charger. Dodges current design language features a crosshairs grille and in the Durango that grille is flanked by available Bi-Xenon headlamps.

Dodge Durango Limited Exterior

A larger air intake is itself flanked by fog lights set within sculpted recesses. Additional sport styling is apparent on its wide hood and across its profile, the latter with belt line sculpting and rocker panel trim. Its large wheel arches accommodate big wheels, available in a variety of sizes and styles. Bringing up the rear is another Dodge design feature: a racetrack taillight layout added just this year, part of a broader mid product cycle refresh.

Inside, seating is for seven or in the case of the tested Durango Limited it seats six. That loss of seating comes with a nice benefit as the second row three-place bench seat is replaced with a pair of captains chairs, offering comfort rivaling the front row bucket seats. That third row seat can accommodate two passengers and provides ample leg room, but as my teen son told me, the seat backs are hard. Blame that on making a seat just thin enough to fold flat when expanding the storage area. Back support, evidently, has taken a hit.

Five Durango Editions

Its third-row seating weakness aside, the Durango’s interior strength lies across its brightly lit and sensibly designed dashboard. All five Durango models are outfitted with a premium instrument cluster with tachometer, offering a sharply contrasting and easy-to-read display. Both the SXT ($29,795) and the SXT Plus ($31,495) are outfitted with cloth low-back bucket seats with manual adjustment in the SXT only. The Limited ($35,995) brings in leather-trimmed buckets seats, heated across the first two rows. The Durango R/T ($38,995) has sport-trimmed leather seats, while the top-of-the-line Citadel ($40,995) is outfitted with the Durango’s highest quality leather materials. As equipped, the Limiteds driver seat features eight-way power adjustment. A tilt and telescopic steering wheel column and a heated steering wheel are also included with the Limited.

Like other crossovers, the Dodge Durango Limited provides generous amounts of storage with various in-door pockets, an overhead console, a deep glove box, a stacked center console, and beverage holders. A Premium Group ($2,395) brought in a number of goodies including SiriusXM traffic and travel alerts, a 506-watt 9-speaker audio system, HD radio, power sunroof, navigation, and a power liftgate. A Rear DVD entertainment system ($1,995) brought in a Blu-Ray compatible video system with dual screens located on the back of the front seat head rests.

2014 Dodge Durango Limited.

Other goodies that brought the Durango Limiteds final price up to $47,165 included a trailer tow package ($995); a security, safety and convenience group ($1,195) with Bi-Xenon headlamps, covered storage compartment with hooks, a cargo net, and blind spot detection with rear cross traffic alert. Another $895 upgrade gave you the captains chairs while $300 brought in a second row console with an armrest, storage, a USB charging port, and a 12-volt outlet. One thing about most larger crossovers is that the list of amenities is typically exhaustive. It is also exhausting to recall them all.

The memory makers from the drivers perspective include the following: excellent sight lines; plush but supportive seats; a generously padded steering wheel; a smartly laid out instrument panel; and very important: a colorful and fairly easy to configure infotainment system. By default, I typically use my own smartphone-driven navigation and other helps, but with UConnect you have a system that wont have you yelling in frustration or, worse, looking at it for too long to find it a distraction.

Engine and Transmission Choices

All SXT, STX Plus and Limited editions are powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 making 290 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 260 foot-pounds of torque at 4,800 rpm. Rear-wheel drive is standard and all models are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Full-time all-wheel drive is standard with the Limited, while four-wheel drive with low-range gearing comes with the V-8.

2014 Dodge Durango Limited.

Speaking of a V-8, that 5.7-liter HEMI engine is available with the Limited and Citadel, and is standard with the R/T. This engine makes 360 horsepower at 5,150 rpm and 390 foot-pounds of torque at 4,250 rpm. It is the engine of choice for people that want maximum power and towing capabilities although the 6,200-pound towing capacity of the V-6 is quite good. With the V-8, you can pull up to 7,400 pounds. With the larger engine you will also see your fuel mileage drop by an average of 3 mpg over correspondingly equipped V-6 Durangos.

From a full stop and up to highway speeds, the Durango V-6 gets right down to business. The transmission shifts smoothly through all forward gears and the crossover handled all road abrasions with ease. Handling itself is on par with other models Ive tested with the lone exception being the ridiculously fun Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. Ah, but were talking Dodge here, not a $70,000 Jeep.

Buying Considerations

Ive often been asked by friends about various features you can get in vehicles that they are considering. Usually, that discussion helps them make a distinction between the amenities they must have and those that would be nice to have, but may bust their budgets.

The security of all-wheel-drive is important to many people, precisely where the Limited delivers. Quite easily, however, many of the amenities that people want add upwards of $10,000 to the sticker price, requiring buyers to align their expectations with their budgets. So, if you want a crossover in this class that comes well equipped, your starting point is about $40,000 and can push up toward $50,000 when all is said and done.

2014 Dodge Durango Limited.

Fortunately for Dodge shoppers you also have two other people haulers that offer excellent value in the form of the Dodge Grand Caravan (minivan) and Dodge Journey (crossover) at far lower price points. They’re both much different vehicles than the Durango, but are just the sort of compromises that can keep you in the Dodge family.

Special Service Dodge Durango Prepared For Civil Fleets

October 21, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

American automotive manufacturers provide select vehicles for civil fleets including police cars, ambulances and fire chief vehicles. These civil-oriented models are based on various production sedans and sport utility vehicles, and include a 2014 Dodge Durango Special Service model designed for fire, police and civil fleet customers. Last week, the Chrysler Group released information about its special-purpose Dodge Durango.

Dodge Durango Special Service Vehicle
Dodge rolls out a special service Durango.

The new model is being built at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit with orders being received now. The Durango is a crossover utility vehicle that shares its platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Special Service Engine Choices

Two engine choices are available with the special service Durango: a 3.6-liter V-6 making 290 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque and a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 making 360 horsepower and 390 foot-pounds of torque. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, helping to deliver upwards of a 15 percent fuel efficiency improvement over previous models. The HEMI also utilizes cylinder deactivation technology that shuts down four cylinders when operating at lower performance levels.

The V-6 special service model has a towing capacity of up to 6,200 pounds and a driving range of over 600 miles. It delivers up to 25 miles per gallon of regular grade gasoline. The V-8 engine can pull up to 7,400 pounds and also takes regular grade gasoline. This model can deliver up to 23 mpg.

The Dodge Durango Special Service model joins two other Chrysler Group products to serve government fleet customers: the Dodge Charger Pursuit sedan and the Ram 1500 Special Service truck. Peter Grady, Vice President of Network Development and Fleet Operations said, “The 2014 Dodge Durango Special Service model is a state-of-the-art resource for fleet customers.” He noted that it has “…been specifically designed for the demands and rigors of fleet duty.”

Dodge Durango Upgrades

That special duty capability is apparent with the multiple upgrades this vehicle has received including a heavy-duty battery, a 220-amp alternator, a heavy-duty water pump and engine cooler, a heavy-duty brake package and a load leveling system.

Inside, the cabin was designed to meet the needs of government fleet buyers. This model includes a programmable seven-inch display in the gauge cluster, a Uconnect infotainment five-inch touchscreen with voice command and Bluetooth, a media hub for USB, SD media card and auxiliary jack integration, and Bluetooth streaming audio. This model is also equipped with new LED daytime running lamps and rear race track tail lamps, the latter lasting longer than traditional bulbs in a bid to reduce maintenance costs.

Exclusive to the Durango Special Service model is a rear cargo area equipped with under floor storage compartments and side storage compartments. Other modifications include a special service headliner, a red and white interior dome lamp, and spot lamp wiring preparation. Unlike other Durango models, the special service edition does not include a third row seat. Instead, it has been deleted to free up cargo capacity. However, the second row controls for heating and cooling remain in place.

Durango Handling and Safety

Special service vehicle upgrades including a skid plate group for all-wheel drive models, a rear view back up camera, a trailer tow group, an engine block heater and Uconnect mobile access capability are available.

Chrysler says that the special service safety and security features number more than 60 and include stability control, traction control, hill start assist, electronic brake-force distribution, electronic roll mitigation and trailer sway control. Seat-mounted and side curtain airbags are standard; front-row active head restraints are also included. Every special service model is covered by a 5-year/100,000-mile fully transferrable powertrain warranty.

Hot SUV: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

May 24, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

Updated May 25, 2013, to reflect correct towing limit.

Do you know your SUV history? No, not that Jeep and Land Rover got the segment going beginning in the 1940s, rather that souped up SUVs are uncommon, especially a factory-built model. After all, SUVs are bulky, creaky and just plain uncool, right?

Yes, there are a fair share of aftermarket enhanced SUVs on the road, but the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is proof that a factory-built performance model has its place in the mix. And this Grand Cherokee does the whole performance thing better than the GMC Typhoon, itself a hot SUV built for two model years ending in 1993. For one, the Grand Cherokee SRT is of unibody construction, providing a tighter fit, a smoother ride and quieter interior than the body-on-frame Typhoon. For another, two decades have passed since the Typhoon’s exit and the technologies found in the SRT simply did not exist when the Typhoon was built. Both models are cool, but the Grand Cherokee is uber cool.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

Let’s start with the facade. The 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT offers a similar overall design to the 2013 edition with a few important changes. Those changes include a tweaked fascia, updated lighting and new wheels. A blacked-out look dominates the SRT’s front end, with the grille, and the surfaces surrounding the headlights similarly affected. In the rear, the same blacked out treatment surrounds the tail lights. Notably, the grille is shorter and moved slightly higher while new tail lights flank the rear.

New wheel options provide a dramatic look to the sculpted SRT’s profile. Fully polished, five-spoke 20-inch Goliath wheels provide a distinctive look and are encased within Pirelli P Zero three-season tires. Yes, if you live in snow country you’ll need to replace these with winter tires as the grip won’t be enough to safely stop you when road conditions are icy.

Inside, seating is for five with both the driver and front passenger supported by bolstered sport seats. Seating surfaces are covered in leather and suede, with Laguna leather and an Alcantara headliner available. A brand-new steering wheel, wrapped in leather and offering a heating function, features numerous operating controls and a pair of paddle shifters. Brightly lit gauges and an 8.4-inch center stack display screen provide a balanced look without overwhelming the senses. The center console also features the stick shift and drive mode control, the latter making it possible to drive in regular (auto), snow, tow, sport or track modes.

SRT Performance Capabilities

The Grand Cherokee SRT emphasizes its sporting credentials and does so in a big way. This 470-hp beast can get moving, inviting you to toy with the driving mode to see just how fast the SRT can move as well as stop. On the display screen you can track your 0 to 60 mph, 1/8- and 1/4-mile times as well as your braking, steering angle, lateral and longitudinal G-Forces, and performance output.

Needless to say, this writer experimented at least a half a dozen times with the launch sequence in a bid to propel the Grand Cherokee SRT from 0 to 60 mph as quickly as possibly. A best time of 5.0 seconds came in well short of the 4.5 seconds others have claimed. Figure that dedicated performance car drivers will nail that number which, by the way, beats the GMC Typhoon by 0.8 seconds.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT HEMI engine.

Braking is precise thanks to its world-class Brembo braking system. That system is evident the moment you set your eyes on the SRT as its front and rear calipers are clad in red.

SRT chose Brembo for its benchmark setting capabilities, a system known for bringing the burliest vehicles to a safe and clean stop while retaining brake pedal feel and minimizing brake fade. The Grand Cherokee SRT is outfitted with 15-inch rotors in the front with six-piston calipers; the rear features 13.8-inch rotors with four-piston calipers. This brake system arrangement is ideal for the Jeep as we’re talking about a model with a gross vehicle weight rating of 6,500 pounds.

Jeep Driving Characteristics

Grand Cherokee SRT seat.Spirited driving defines SRT; making this possible for a coupe or a sedan is one thing, but it becomes much more of a challenge in an SUV. A higher profile, aerodynamic constraints and its heavier weight are issues that must be managed, something Chrysler’s engineering team has pulled off. Outfitting the Grand Cherokee with a hulking V-8 means providing it with a balanced suspension system, what it has accomplished by means of an independent front and multilink rear suspension with stabilizer bars. Add in a Bilstein adaptive damping suspension and the package is complete.

Chrysler tapped ZF to supply an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting capabilities. This transmission is unique to the premium midsize SUV class and engages quietly and seamlessly. Shift to manual mode and you can paddle-shift your way down the road. The SRT’s rack and pinion steering is precise and handles tight turns and twisty roads with ease. Body roll is minimal — you may quickly forget that you’re driving an SUV.

SRT, Chrysler DNA

Jeep made sure that the Grand Cherokee SRT provides a complete package with performance, luxury, room and utility offered without compromise. Is DNA is derived from the best of the Chrysler Group as its performance parallels the Dodge Challenger and its luxury the Chrysler 300C. Its room and utility are all Jeep, the latter quite evident with its 7,200-pound towing capacity. Try to find another SUV that offers all this and you’d be hard pressed to succeed. Unless, of course, you happened to find one customized by its owner.

Its $62,995 base price is more than double that of the standard Grand Cherokee Laredo. Add in the 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio package, the full size spare and special tires and your price pushes into the upper 60s or where no Jeep has gone before. Clearly, if you want a performance Jeep and are looking for a happy compromise between the Dodge Challenger SRT and Chrysler 300C, this model delivers with utility features included.
