Jaguar Land Rover Brings Resources to Bear to Fight the Coronavirus Pandemic

March 31, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

Jaguar Land Rover models, including these new Defender models, are aiding Red Cross Societies around the world in the fight against the coronavirus.

The coronavirus pandemic, best known as COVID-19, is the world’s greatest challenge of our time. Hundreds of thousands of individuals have tested positive for the virus with likely millions more affected but showing no signs of symptoms at present.

We’ve reported about the impact the pandemic has had on the auto industry, which has shut down scores of manufacturing facilities around the world. This unprecedented move will have a far-reaching effect on the industry, perhaps lasting for many years.

JLR Responds; Redirects Press Fleet

Nevertheless, automakers are not simply waiting for the pandemic to end. Instead of sitting by the sidelines, many are proactively doing their part to meet the challenge.

Indeed, Jaguar Land Rover has deployed more than 160 vehicle globally to support emergency response organizations. Specifically, the Britain-based manufacturer has redirected dozens of British press fleet vehicles, including the all-new Defender SUV, to the British Red Cross. Consequently, the Red Cross is empowered to reach the most vulnerable citizens, including the senior population.

Simon Lewis, Head of Crisis Response, British Red Cross, elaborated on his organization’s response efforts. “This unprecedented global health emergency requires us all to pull together. As part of the British Red Cross response to coronavirus, we’re delving deep into the heart of communities across the UK to help strengthen support for the most vulnerable people through delivering essential food parcels and medicines to those unable to get out.”
Furthermore, an additional 65 vehicles are now deployed to support Red Cross Societies in several countries, including Australia, France, Spain, and South Africa. The company plans to offer additional vehicles to support the COVID-19 response moving forward.

An Enduring Red Cross Partnership

Jaguar Land Rover’s involvement with the International Red Cross spans more than 65 years. Down through the years, JLR has lent vehicles to Britain’s National Health Service. Moreover, the company is donating protective equipment, including wraparound eye gear for medical staff, to the NHS and is working closely with the British government to aid in various capacities.

Britain has been hard hit by this strain of the coronavirus, with more than 22,000 confirmed cases as of this writing. Some 1,408 individuals have died. The pandemic, though, is far from running its course with even more widespread outbreaks expected. Some fear that the virus may also produce a second wave, especially in China where it originated.

Auto Trends received a press statement from JLR regarding its involvement in the battle against COVID-19.

Said Finbar McFall, Jaguar Land Rover Customer Experience Director, “The health and safety of our employees, customers and their families remains our priority. Jaguar and Land Rover will do everything we can to support people in need around the world. Our partnership with the Red Cross goes back 65 years and we will work hand in hand with them to do all we can during this global health emergency. We will also provide help to those closer to home in our local communities. We can all play a part in helping the vulnerable during this global pandemic.”

JLR temporarily shuttered its British manufacturing facilities earlier this month, while maintaining production at plants in Brazil and India. The company hasn’t set a timeframe for resuming production, which likely will occur once the British government has lifted its lockdown directive.

Impact on U.S. Operations

In the U.S., JLR has largely curtailed its operation, with showrooms closed in various locations, depending on local “stay-at-home” edicts. Auto Trends will continue to report on industry happenings, including how manufacturers, suppliers, and other key players are responding to the crisis.

Spotlight: 23rd Annual Triangle British Classic Car Show

May 20, 2019 by admin 3 Comments

23rd Annual Triangle British Classic Car Show

Auto shows are held ‘year round, especially in warmer climates where cold and snow are not much of a factor. In the southeast, including the Carolinas, May begins a stretch of shows lasting into early fall. Thus, if you enjoy classic cars, then this is the season for you.

The 23rd Annual Triangle British Classic Car Show is one such event, held at North Hills in Raleigh on the third Saturday of May. The show is organized by the North Carolina MG Car Club.

This year’s show welcomed nearly 150 British-made vehicles. And despite hot temperatures, the spectators came out in droves.

The show’s organizers supplied clearly marked description signs,
not unlike what’s found at Concours-level events.

From Britain, With Love

British-centric car shows supply us with a rich history of automotive manufacturing. Like the U.S., the U.K. counts scores of defunct brands, including Austin-Healey, MG, Morris, and Reliant, just to name a few. Government-brokered mergers and financial backing helped keep the industry going, with most of the current brands now foreign-owned.

And yet, the connection between old new remains and not just with the right-hand steering wheels of manufacturer’s home market vehicles or with the uniquely British terms bonnet (hood) and boot (trunk) referenced by owners. Further, it doesn’t take a sharp eye to spot any era Jaguar, while most enthusiasts immediately recognize the differences between McLaren and Aston-Martin.

So, let’s celebrate the many classic British models by reviewing what was featured at this year’s show.

MG: Morris Garages

As expected, MG models dominated the event, with most of the models showcased from the 1950s through the 1970s. MG, which is derived from Morris Garages, has gone through a succession of owners since its founding in 1924. Today, the company is owned by China’s SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, which produces a variety of passenger vehicles for the global market, including the U.K. But these models are unrelated to the MG of antiquity.

The MG models popular with collectors fall largely under two groups: MGA (launched in 1955) and MGB (rolled out in 1962 through 1980). Though designed and built in the U.K. at the company’s factory in Abington-on-Thames, England, more than 90 percent of the MGA vehicles produced were shipped abroad. Similarly, the MGB series also found success overseas, especially in the U.S.

Jaguar Motors

Founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, Jaguar remains an important British manufacturer of cars and utility vehicles. Today, the marque represents one part of the Jaguar Land Rover enterprise, now owned by India’s Tata Motors.

A few Jaguars were on hand, including a 1961 Jaguar XK150 and a 1970 E-Type.

This one may already be in the hands of a new owner.

This Lotus example was the lone representation for the entire brand.

The Mini brand, now owned by BMW, was represented by four models,
with the current designs flanking the two classics.

Besides the British marques, the show made room for modified cars, including this three-wheeled conveyance.

Best of Show

The overall Best of Show award went to this 1936 Rolls-Royce 25/30 Saloon. It was the only RR offering on hand and clearly was a standout.

2014-2018 Jaguar F-Type Buyer’s Guide

December 5, 2018 by admin 6 Comments

You won’t find Jaguar calling the F-Type a tribute or spiritual successor model of the Jaguar E-Type, but in many ways it is.

Forty years after the earlier sports car was canceled, an all-new Jaguar F-Type model arrived in 2014. The F-Type has the long hood, rounded side body panels and the spheroid taillight touches of the earlier model, but beyond that Jaguar’s sports car is modern and ideally suited to take on such competitors as the BMW Z4, Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-Benz SLK Class.

Our Jaguar F-Type buying guide covers the first five years of this model’s run. Please use it if you’re shopping for a Jaguar F-Type.

Jaguar F-Type
The F-Type is Jaguar’s quintessential sports car.

A New Beginning

The 2014 Jaguar F-Type immediately served notice that a new British sports car not named McLaren or Lotus had arrived. But instead of a full frontal assault, Jaguar dipped its toes in the market, by presenting just one of the two expected body styles, and a convertible at that.

Further, Jaguar chose a conservative route with the F-Type’s powertrains and drivetrains, by holding off on the eventual manual transmission and all-wheel drive options expected.

But don’t think anything less of the 2014 Jaguar F-Type because of its modest debut. What you have is a stunningly handsome design marked by a large grille opening bordered by air intake chambers. Upwardly sloping headlamps with natty LED accent lights nearly complete the frontal presentation. Of course, we’d be remiss to forget the clamshell hood, a style which is also favored by such competitors as the Maserati Ghibli and Chevrolet Corvette.

A Matter of Design

Scan your eyes along the profile and the rounded panels dominate. Jaguar’s designers could have left well enough alone, but added an uninterrupted line that begins at the front of the car, crosses the front fender and door before fading away as it bends at the rear.

Jaguar F-Type
The evocative Jaguar F-Type’s profile view.

A second line flows from wheel to wheel, intersecting with a wheel vent before dipping as it bypasses the flush door handle. From the rear, the Jaguar’s haunch is marked by narrow wraparound tail lamps and dual exhaust tips centered within the rear diffuser.

Inside, cozy is the operative word. The seats, while comfortable and supportive, may not work for taller individuals. But they’re adjustable and that’s a saving grace for drivers who do fit inside. Attractively stitched leather, metallic accents and firm controls (which are ideally placed) underscore the attention to detail we expect. Never mind the stellar build quality inside and out.

Tech + Safety

Concerning technology matters, the Jaguar F-Type does a few things quite well. Beginning with the 2014 model, a 10-speaker audio system with a CD player, smartphone integration, a USB port, and an auxiliary jack are standard features. An 8-inch color touch-screen display is included. Optionally, Jaguar offers a 12-speaker audio package.

Various driver-assist features are available as part of an optional Vision Package. Here, you’ll find a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, reverse traffic detection along with front and rear parking aids. An available adaptive front lighting system improves night visibility while cornering. Automatic high beams is another option.

Jaguar F-Type
This Jaguar’s center console includes an integrated passenger grab bar.

The 2015 model returned without technology changes. For 2016, the F-Type has a new telematics and connectivity suite, including automated emergency calling and smartphone connectivity. However, shoppers should know that at no time through this model’s first five years has Jaguar offered Android Auto or Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. As for 2017, the technologies remain the same.

Beginning in 2018, the F-Type has a new infotainment system, which features a tablet-style screen for controlling audio, navigation and other functions. GoPro camera integration is also new, which includes an app for producing video. An available forward-facing camera works with the Jaguar’s emergency braking system to enhance automatic braking. Adaptive speed limiter, traffic sign recognition and driver condition monitor are also new this year. Parallel parking assist is available.

Under the Hood

Jaguar and Land Rover are joined at the hip, therefore the engines and transmissions they offer are shared between these two iconic British brands.

From the onset, this Jaguar has offered both a supercharged V6 engine displacing 3 liters and a supercharged 5.0-liter V8. The standard engine makes 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, except in “S” models where it makes 380 horsepower.

Jaguar F-Type
What’s under the hood of your Jaguar?

The V8 engines deliver a blistering 495 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Both engines work alongside an 8-speed automatic transmission with rev-matching and paddle shift controls.

All F-Type models have a brake-based torque vectoring system, which contributes to a more planted feel when taking sharp corners. Further, V6 rear-wheel-drive models have a mechanical limited-slip differential, while V8 models have an electronically controlled version. Jaguar also includes a drive mode selector, which supplies switch-operated control under a variety of conditions, including rain, ice, and snow for better grip. On dry roads, the system adjusts transmission shifts and engine RPMs.

Charting the Performance Changes

Jaguar never hesitates to make changes to its halo F-Type sports car. Each subsequent model year seems to build on the previous one with those changes going beyond a simple update.

For its first year, the F-Type was available as a convertible only and in base, S, and V8 S trims.

For 2015, the coupe joined the ranks. It can be found in S and R editions, the latter sharing the same supercharged V8 found in the coupe, but with its performance kicked up to 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. As before, all engines work with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

All-Wheel Drive and a Manual Gearbox

Beginning in 2016, the F-Type received what some enthusiasts had long wanted: a six-speed manual gearbox. This manual delivers the quick shifts you’d expect in a sports car.

Also new this year is optional all-wheel drive. The automatic transmission is your singular choice here. Other changes include the discontinuation of the V8 S model and the introduction of electric power steering, which replaces the previous hydraulic system.

The changes for 2017 include the addition of two new trims. A new base model kicks things off, while an SVR trim is the new range-topper. In between, you’ll find Premium, S and R trims.

The SVR keeps the supercharged V8, but it also receives an exclusive bump in performance to 575 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Moreover, the SVR features a specially tuned suspension, wider tires and wheels, and an optional carbon-fiber roof and carbon-ceramic brakes.

2018 Jaguar F-Type 400.
2018 Jaguar F-Type 400.

For its fifth year, the 2018 Jaguar F-Type gains a third engine. This one is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with an output of 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar pairs this rear-wheel-drive-only model with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine is the new fuel efficiency leader as it makes an EPA-estimated 23/30 mpg city/highway. Compare that with the V6 at 20/28 and the V8 at 15/24 and the difference are certainly noteworthy.

Also new for 2018 is a special “400 Sport” edition, which raises the V6’s performance to 400 horsepower. Lastly, Jaguar discontinued the S trim and rolled out an R Dynamic trim to replace it.

Jaguar F-Type Shopping

If you have your heart set on Jaguar’s sports car, you’re not alone. Some models, however, are much more difficult to find than others, especially those equipped with the manual transmission. Package options can affect pricing considerably, especially on the SVR trim.

All in all, the Jaguar F-Type is the type of sports car we expect from this British marque.

Rethinking Wagons: 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake

June 15, 2018 by admin 2 Comments

Circle the wagons as the Jaguar XF Sportbrake has arrived.

2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake S AWD.
2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake S AWD.

The 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake is a midsize luxury wagon, a model that joins the existing XF sedan. Jaguar’s new model blends the best of a sedan with a crossover, giving customers a fresh choice in the luxury sphere. The XF Sportbrake’s fetching design may make you rethink everything you had thought wagons represented. If it does, then that is a good thing.

Wagons are not new to Europe, which has long embraced them. Once popular in the U.S., wagons were largely dropped from vehicle lineups in favor of minivans. Down through the years, we have seen such models as the Dodge Magnum and Cadillac CTS sport wagon appear briefly, then disappear. Most recently, this writer reviewed the Buick Regal TourX, the first wagon for the Buick brand in decades.

But Jaguar occupies the top-tier of the market and that is where the new XF Sportbrake competes. Yet, it does not occupy the segment alone as Volvo offers two models: the V60 and V90. You will also find the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class with wagon variants. In the mainstream sphere, the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen also holds sway.

If you are shopping for a midsize luxury wagon, then the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and either Volvo model are Jaguar’s logical competitors.

2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake S AWD

2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake Overview

Typically, Jaguar offers multiple trim levels and powertrain choices with its vehicles. You will find a wide range of models, ranging from standard to top-end luxury.

The 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake offers a clean departure from that approach. Here, there is only one trim level, plus a limited-edition First Edition model. Jaguar must know that wagons have limited appeal in the states, so instead of offering a wide range, this British automaker elected to go with one that is likely to deliver maximum appeal.

So, your choice for 2018 is the XF Sportbrake S ($70,450) or the XF Sportbrake First Edition ($72,100). Add $995 for your destination charge. This wagon seats five, has standard all-wheel drive, a supercharged V6 engine and an automatic transmission.

2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake S AWD

A Matter of Style

A quick scan of the XF Sportbrake reveals an interesting combination of expected and surprising features. From the front fascia to the edge of the windshield, the look is all XF sedan. From the canted windshield and stretching all the way to the back, the design features a fresh take all its own.

2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake S AWDAnd that extended look features a long, sweeping roofline, which tapers from the B-pillar to the rear, ending in a liftgate that juts out and down. The spoiler adds a fitting separation between the roof and the rear. An even beltline, pretty character lines, subdued body sculpting and just the right amount of ornamentation add flair. The 20-inch sport wheels with red brake caliper covers serve as eye candy. At the rear, the requisite polished chrome dual exhaust tips complete the experience.

Lovely, Quiet Interior

Inside, the cabin offers the beauty, fit, finish and layout you expect with Jaguar. The interior is dressed in leather with twin-stitching running across the dashboard, the door handles and along the edges of the seats and headrests. Aluminum controls and carbon fiber touches add visual interest. Jaguar models typically make use of smart color combinations and my test model offered a rich example of this with Oyster and Ebony the chosen colors.

Jaguar supplies a thickly padded steering wheel, a digital dashboard and a cleanly laid out center console. Turn the XF Sportbrake on and the transmission dial emerges. Behind the dial is a place to park your smartphone. Ahead of the dial is two cup holders and a small storage compartment. All four doors have storage pockets as well.

Seating is for five and all five will fit just fine. Storage space behind the second-row seat measures 31.7 cubic feet. Fold the seat and you have nearly 70 cubic feet to play with. Yes, that space is longer and shallower than your typical crossover, but it offers usable space that should intrigue anyone who might otherwise prefer a crossover.

Safety & Technology Highlights

Because the XF Sportbrake comes in one well-equipped trim, you will find the expected driver-assist features bundled in one package ($3,495). You get blind spot detection with reverse traffic detection, adaptive cruise control with queue assist, and park assist with a surround view camera.

Jaguar supplies this model with an eight-inch capacitive touch-screen. There is a Meridian audio system along with satellite radio, USB and auxiliary audio input, Bluetooth and a navigation system. Sorry, Jaguar has yet to make the jump to smartphone compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Options include a 16-speaker Meridian audio system, a Wi-Fi hotspot and an upgraded navigation system with a 10.2-inch color display.

2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake S AWD

On the Road With an XF Sportbrake

Under the hood of the 2018 XF Sportbrake is a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine with 380 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. These numbers are familiar to the Jaguar faithful as they represent the enhanced horsepower figure for all “S” models along with the torque generated. The standard Jaguar models make 340 horsepower, but through engineering tweaking, 40 additional horses are brought to the gate. Jaguar marries this engine to an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake S AWDWith Jaguar electing to go with the enhanced engine and all-wheel drive, they are serving notice that this is a performance model. And that is something you realize the moment you start the engine, press on the gas pedal and head down the road.

The exhaust system chimes in with a low hum, which is especially under full throttle. As for the all-wheel-drive system, it is rear-biased, therefore you enjoy the handling attributes that go with it. Steering is evenly weighted and the ride feels quite comfortable.

Find your favorite twisty road and hang along the edge and you may forget you are driving a wagon. The self-leveling rear suspension helps, keeping the XF Sportbrake planted and focused. Although I have not driven either Jaguar SUV yet, I imagine that the body roll is noticeable with the crossovers, while it is absent with the XF. Credit the wagon’s 4.1-inch ground clearance for helping here.

Move into the straightaways and you will soon see how fast this wagon moves. The ZF-supplied automatic transmission feels entirely comfortable, as it delivers the right cog for the moment. Grab your spouse and the kiddies, set the car seats in place and give everyone a driving experience that few utility vehicles can match.

Parting Thoughts: 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake

Allow me to admit my bias for a moment: I have grown weary of crossovers and I would love to see consumers head back to coupes and sedans.

2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake SAmericans rightfully turned their backs on the earlier wagons, given that the designs offered in the 1970s and 1980s were terrible. But what set our teeth on edge were models such as the Chevrolet Caprice wagon of the 1990s, which has bloated sheetmetal and garish “woodgrain” trim. Game over.

Happily, manufacturers realize that style is extremely important. Wagons offer a challenging canvas, but through careful designing and attention to detail, the wow factor is possible. In the XF Sportbrake, Jaguar successfully crafted a look that is appealing. Moreover, it combines the utility of a crossover with the sportiness of a performance sedan.

The high starting price point for the XF Sportbrake limits this model to a small audience. As long as Jaguar can internally justify limited sales, this wagon should enjoy a decent run. If it gains traction, look for more competitors to join in. Who knows? Any shift away from crossovers could benefit this once forgotten and long-neglected body style.

May Sales Tumble, But the End is Not Near

June 2, 2016 by admin Leave a Comment

Sales setback is temporary with some surprises thrown in.

US auto sales fell by 6.1 percent last month, but the end is hardly near. Instead, the industry counted two fewer selling days for May, accounting for much of the loss for the month.

2015 Ford F-150

Ford F-150 sales rose in by 9 percent in May.

US Manufacturers: Only FCA Rises

As expected, Fiat Chrysler sales rose by 1.1 percent, largely on the strength of its Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivan models. Jeep was another positive spot and was the only Fiat Chrysler brand other than Alfa Romeo to post gains for the month.

Some manufacturers such as GM posted larger losses than expected. GM sales fell by 18 percent, while Ford’s drop of 6.1 percent matched the industry’s average. GM blamed much of its decline to a reduction in fleet sales.

Had Ford maintained its sales from last month, it would have topped GM. Instead, it closed the gap to about 5,700 units, while remaining ahead of Toyota. The bright spot for Ford was once again its line of F-Series trucks. In May, Ford sold 67,412 units, up 9 percent for the month.

Hyundai Records a Strong May

Every major manufacturer outside of FCA posted losses last month, but there was a noticeable exception from the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group — Hyundai sales rose by a robust 11.6 percent; Kia sales edged up by 0.8 percent.

“Our refreshed CUV lineup continues to exhibit strength in this market,” said Derrick Hatami, vice president of national sales for Hyundai Motor America.

2016 Subaru Forester

Forester and Outback sales continue to pace Subaru.

As for the Big 3 Japanese manufacturers, Toyota sales fell by 9.6 percent, Nissan dipped by 1 percent, and Honda sales were off by 4.8 percent. But there were some bright spots here too — Scion sales rose by 38.6 percent as Toyota continues to wind down its youth brand. Infiniti sales were also up, climbing by 3.4 percent.

BMW Group sales fell by 8.7 percent, Daimler was off by 1.9 percent, while Audi sales rose by 1.6 percent. Volkswagen Group sales fell by 9.5 percent, dragged down by Volkswagen’s 17.2 percent plunge.

Jaguar Propels JLR

Jaguar, with two new products to offer, enjoyed a 79.7 percent increase for the month. Meanwhile, Land Rover sales fell by 8 percent. Thus, JLR sales rose by 8 percent based on Jaguar’s strong month.

“We are very pleased that through five months of the year, we have increased our business for both Jaguar and Land Rover brands,” said Joe Eberhardt, President and CEO, Jaguar Land Rover, North America, LLC. “The Land Rover brand continues its momentum from a record setting 2015, and Jaguar has taken off with the expansion of the Jaguar brand into two dynamic new segments with the Jaguar XE and F-PACE which are now on sale.”

Subaru Breaks a Record…Again

While FCA now has 74 consecutive months of month-over-month gains to its credit, Subaru is not too far behind with a 54-month streak of its own in place. Last month, Subaru had its best May ever, with sales topping 50,000 units. Its Forester and Outback models helped this niche automaker realize a 1.1 percent gain for the month.

And not to be overlooked is Volvo. The Swedish automaker is enjoying a strong rebound this year, largely based on its all-new XC90 crossover utility vehicle. Volvo sales rose by 10.2 percent in May.

“Our refreshed CUV lineup continues to exhibit strength in this market,” said Derrick Hatami, vice president of national sales for Hyundai Motor America.

2015 Hyundai Santa Fe

Crossover sales, including this Santa Fe, lifted Hyundai sales.

“With 10 percent growth for May while the overall industry is down, and now eleven months of double digit sales growth, it is a true testament to the transformation of Volvo in the US,” said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO, Volvo Car USA.

Mazda sales fell by 4.3 percent, Mitsubishi sales were off by 5.7 percent, and Tesla sales rose an estimated 55.3 percent according to Autodata Corp.

SAAR Still Strong

Despite the sales drop, the all-important SAAR remains strong. SAAR or the Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate takes into account fluctuations, such as a sales calendar with two fewer selling days. For May, the SAAR remains above 17 million units.

Sales data per Automotive News and the car manufacturers.

Diesel Does It: Range Rover HSE

February 24, 2016 by admin 7 Comments

Britain’s Range Rover line adds a turbo-diesel in the North American market. If you are a luxury sport utility vehicle shopper, then you should seriously consider this potent powerplant.

There is nothing greater in the Land Rover universe than a Range Rover. Since 1970, Range Rover has represented the pinnacle line of SUVs within the Land Rover fold, and is now composed of three models, including the eponymous Range Rover. Consider Land Rover the cake and Range Rover as the delicious thick layer of icing slathering it.

2016 Range Rover HSE.
2016 Range Rover HSE.

2016 Range Rover HSE

A 2016 Range Rover HSE td6 SUV was a recent visitor and this one came outfitted with a 3.0-liter, turbocharged V-6 engine. Yes, Land Rover has a diesel for the US market, and for the second time in three weeks I was able to test one as equipped. Indeed, just two weeks earlier a similarly powered Range Rover Sport was provided, providing me with my initial taste of UK-built diesel goodness.

The new diesels are the same displacement as the supercharged V-6 gasoline engines you’ll find in many Jaguar and Land Rover products. Although diesels are typically heavier than gas-powered counterparts, the turbo-diesel is 18 pounds lighter. Further, the diesels are nearly just as quick, traveling from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds or a half-second slower than the supercharged gasoline equivalent. So much for a weak engine.

But where the new turbo-diesel shines best is in fuel economy. The Range Rover is EPA-rated at 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, offering a 32 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the petrol-powered model. Throw in the longevity factor of diesels and you have one more reason to consider this option, especially if you plan to keep your Range Rover for a long time.

No doubt about it, the Range Rover is a heavy vehicle. The test model weighed 4,883 pounds, yet coming in substantially less than the 5,840-pound Cadillac Escalade I tested in 2014 and even 900 fewer pounds than a comparable GMC Yukon Denali. Certainly, any high-profile vehicle weighing more than two tons will project its heaviness, especially when ascending steep hills and powering through the twisties.

Robust Power, Especially When Needed

The Range Rover makes 254 horsepower, but its 443 foot-pounds of torque becomes evident early on and especially as you pass a line of vehicles on the highway. That power provides stellar off-the-mark acceleration and on-road execution. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain pushes forward, imbuing confidence in the driver.

Some people are put-off by diesel clatter, a timbre that becomes increasingly louder as temperatures fall or when the RPMs rise. Inside the cabin, the tone was but a murmur. Stand astride the front end when the engine is running and its reassuring tonality is apparent. What’s doubtful is whether you’ll ever hear a level of clatter matching most diesels of yesteryear or equalling the racket emanating from heavy-duty pickup trucks. Silence may be golden, but even minimal diesel clatter is reassuring.

Volkswagen Scandal Tarnishes the Industry

Thanks to Volkswagen’s problems with diesels, namely its emissions cheating, some people take a dim view of all things diesel. Definitely, that’s an unfortunate reality as the attributes of these engines outweigh the highly exaggerated noxiousness of same.

Indeed, where Volkswagen’s diesel engines reportedly emit more than 40 times the legal limit of pollutants, Jaguar Land Rover engineered its diesels to minimize contaminants. They had to if they were to meet the current Euro 6 pollution standards as well as pass muster with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California’s Air Resources Board.

All three agencies have approved the new diesel thanks in large part to the company’s Low Pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. In effect, the low pressure system holds back recirculation to the turbo and an intercooler, for a lower level of nitrogen oxide (NOx) according to Road & Track. Thusly, the pollutant is converted into innocuous nitrogen and water, with no harmful impact on the environment.

Like other manufacturers, Land Rover utilizes urea to maintain the diesel’s cleanliness. Fluid replenishment comes every 10,000 miles, matching what competitors such as Mercedes-Benz mandate.

Making the Case for Diesels

So, not only is the diesel a clean burning engine delivering copious amounts of power with excellent fuel efficiency and the promise of engine longevity, but its peak power nearly matches that of the available supercharged V-8 and its 461 foot-pounds of torque. The beefy V8 is EPA-rated at 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway, therefore choosing the diesel will give you corresponding power and with fuel savings topping 50 percent.

Have I made a compelling case for the diesel? I hope so. Personally, I’m tired of the sensationalism some critics espouse about all things diesel. Of course, Volkswagen defrauded everyone by passing off its engines as “clean diesels” when they weren’t. Yet, applying a broad brush across the entire industry is not simply disingenuous, but suggests an ulterior motive is at work.

For luxury SUV shoppers, heeding such critics mean ignoring a very capable engine that is matched well with the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, what would be my personal choice if I were shopping for one. And with diesel fuel prices lower than premium gasoline, the additional cost factor has shrunk.

Lastly, all the other attributes of these SUVs have preceded them — the new diesel simply amplifies what makes Range Rover the cream of the luxury SUV crop (See Also — Range Rover SVR: Fastest SUV in the World?).

Burly Beast: Land Rover LR4

October 29, 2015 by admin 4 Comments

2016 Land Rover LR4 HSE Luxury

Someone at Jaguar Land Rover loves me. Indeed, not a month, perhaps two goes by and I receive yet another SUV, sedan or sports car. And just when I thought I have seen them all, yet another variant on the iconic British conveyance theme makes its way through my press fleet rotation.

The one elusive model has been the Land Rover LR4, a 7-passenger SUV that comes full of surprises. For one, it features a more traditional look with its boxy frame and squared off lines. Another surprise was its third row seats — they’re actually quite usable and can extend the people carrying capacity where other SUVs fall short. More about these and other tidbits as we move forward.

As tested, my weekly driver was a 2016 Land Rover LR4 HSE Luxury edition. This midsize SUV traces its roots to the first generation Discovery released in 1989. In North America, we didn’t see that model until 1994, a vehicle known as the Discovery 1.

2016 Land Rover LR4 HSE Luxury

Generational changes brought forth the Discovery 2 and the Discovery 3, but when the DiscoverY 4 was readied for production, North American models assumed the LR4 model name. This was in keeping with a wider change initiated by Land Rover where its high end models are grouped under the Range Rover line and its standard models are represented by the Discovery range. So, the LR4 is still a Discovery, even if it isn’t known by that name in some markets.

For 2016, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has overhauled its pricing structure, reducing prices for all Jaguar models. Although Land Rover is not similarly affected, you’ll find the price point begins in the high 30s or about $10,000 less than the previously cheapest Jaguar. Land Rover sells about five times the number of vehicles as does Jaguar. Lower prices and the brand’s first SUV should help Jaguar close that gap.

The LR4 is priced from $50,400, a few thousand dollars less than the BMW X5 and more than $13,000 below the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. Two higher end models are also offered — the HSE retails from $55,300 and the HSE Luxury from $60,600.

2016 Land Rover LR4 HSE Luxury

For the test model, Land Rover added a Heavy Duty Package ($1,350) — composed of an active locking rear differential, a full-size spare tire on an alloy wheel, and a two-speed transfer case. SiriusXM satellite radio with HD Radio ($750), an apps package ($425), and a hitch receiver with an electrical connector ($650) were also included.

A Black Design Package ($3,500) gave this vehicle its style points as it brought in 20-inch black wheels, a black grille and grille surround, and black trim on the side mirror caps, the door handles, as well as on the side vents. More people than usual commented positively about the look, a very fetching design at that.

Land Rover products are powerful machines with the Range Rover representing the largest of the lot and the Evoque and Discovery Sport occupying the compact range. Whereas the other models offer a more flowing and thereby aerodynamic design, the LR4-in-the-middle look is entirely traditional with a safari-like design. That means a flat fascia, squared lines, a long hood, upright roof pillars, massive wheel wells, and huge rear combination lights. However, modern touches such as LED lights offset the look.

Glass is used in abundance — its greenhouse makes this SUV seem much larger than it is. A moonroof and a panoramic sunroof extend this model’s presence — inside, the look gives each row its own glass partition.

2016 Land Rover LR4 HSE Luxury

Between the C- and D-pillars (the last two roof pillars) are oversized windows that flow to the roof. At first, they seem out of place — but when the third row is in use, it removes the claustrophobic feeling such rows typically convey. With glass all the way around your view is not impeded either.

Inside, the light and bright interior are covered in leather — across the dashboard, around the steering wheel, on door inlays, and around the seats. Wood touches are on the center console and in the door inlays. Aluminum accents are nearly everywhere.

Behind the electronically controlled tilt and telescopic steering column is a two-analog gauge display — tachometer and speedometer — with a large digital driver’s information center in the middle. The center console is composed of a small color display with buttons, switches and knobs underneath to control same. Window and door lock controls are on the inside of the door running along the belt line. Cruise, audio and other driver controls are on the steering wheel.

At the base of the console are the four-wheel drive controls, allowing you to choose whatever conditions suit you best — mud, sand, gravel, and snow. Alas, my off-road antics were restricted this time around to a gravel road that took me to my son’s soccer field. Anyway, I forgot about the controls as the LR4 covered the unpaved road in 4×2 fashion without a bit of drama.

2016 Land Rover LR4 HSE Luxury

The driver and front passenger are treated to a pair of supportive, electronically controlled seats. Between the two the transmission dial rises from its flush position — I prefer a stick, but hey…. A smart phone holder, two cup holders and a deep storage compartment with cooling capabilities are also present.

If you’re looking for your connectivity options, the upper glove box has you covered. Drop that drawer and you’ll find a pair of USB ports and an auxiliary input port. Surprisingly, this was the first time I found a dedicated area for device connections in a glove compartment.

All four doors come with large open storage areas, including drink holders. Those holders are so wide that your one-liter water bottles won’t stay in place for long. However, your 44-ounce super-sized containers should remain stable as you take to the road — but not if you go off road.

The second row bench seat is a 35-30-35 split folding design. That means the outboard seats fold and flip forward, providing access to the rear seats. If you need the rear seats, they pop up from the floor and the headrests are separately secured in place.

2016 Land Rover LR4 HSE Luxury

Those rear seats are ideal for the preteen and are bearable for adults, at least in a pinch. The seats rest nearly against the back window, turning an otherwise generous storage area into a seating area. I was impressed by the amount of leg and head room available. Its a bit tight at the shoulders and the hips, but it presents a seating option that should not be easily dismissed. By the way, Land Rover supplies cup holders and concealed storage compartments back there, as well as climate control vents and open storage pockets — these added features go further to remove the “penalty box” feel of some models.

Under the hood is a supercharged 3.0-liter, V-6 engine making 340 horsepower. Step on the accelerator and it roars to life — you’ll move down the road with no hesitation. This SUV feels strong and provides a commanding presence. It shines on the straight away and moves with authority. Steering is concise and braking is precise.

If there is a drawback to this model it is its fuel economy. The EPA assigned it with a 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway rating. However, I doubt I got much higher than 12 mpg as I watched the gas gauge drop faster than in any other vehicle I’ve driven in recent memory.

The Provocative, Evocative Range Rover Evoque

September 21, 2015 by admin 4 Comments

Range Rover Evoque

British SUV manufacturer Land Rover has divided itself into high-end Range Rover and more pedestrian Discovery lines, with the two aimed at different consumers. Certainly, you could pay upwards of $200,000 for one Range Rover model, but if your SUV aspirations are more down to earth, then the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque with a starting price of $41,100 may be more to your liking.

Notably, the Evoque is the smallest and least costly of all Range Rover models, an all-wheel drive compact SUV with room for five. Range Rover offers the Evoque in a traditional 5-door layout or as a coupe. The 5-door rendition was a recent weekly loaner from Land Rover and it was outfitted with just over $10,000 in package upgrades.

Think “Land Rover” and forced induction should come to mind. That’s because this British marque relies exclusively on performance boosting to squeeze more power from its engines. Most Land Rover (and Jaguar models for that matter), are powered by supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 or 5.0-liter V-8 engines.

Range Rover Evoque

In the case of the Range Rover Evoque, this model relies on a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine, enabling it to attain 240 horsepower and 250 foot-pounds of torque. Land Rover pairs this model with a 9-speed automatic transmission supplied by the German automotive components manufacturer, ZF.

Before we examine the Evoque’s performance numbers closely, we’ll consider its countenance. In particular, beginning with the front fascia, itself marked by a split horizontal chrome grille augmented by a wraparound lighting assembly. The lower grille opening is larger and protected, at least in part, by a skid plate. Oversized embrasures at the corners of the front bumper house a pair of LED daytime running lights.

The Evoque’s broad and muscular hood gives this model an imposing presentation, one that is amplified by its strong shoulders and deeply arched wheel wells. Multiple character lines are found across the profile. A high and rising belt line and a sloping roof give this vehicle a sporty as well as a commanding presence. As the roof line tapers it ends at a pronounced rear spoiler. Wraparound tail lights, rear fog lights, two exhaust tips, and a rear skid plate are also present.

View manufacturer details and pricing

Range Rover Evoque

The Range Rover Evoque can be had in SE ($41,475), SE Premium ($45,675), HSE ($50,475), and HSE Dynamic ($53,775) trim levels. Fully loaded, this model can approach $60,000. Add about $5,000 if the Evoque Coupe is on your list.

Inside, the Range Rover Evoque offers generous room for five with a pair of thickly bolstered and lavishly padded seats up front and a 40-20-40 split fold down seat to the rear. Leather, chrome wood and other high-end materials are used throughout the cabin, a two-tone work of art with a moderately simple formation.

Slip behind the leather-wrapped steering wheel and a tilt and telescopic column are at the ready. Cruise and audio controls are found on the face of the wheel. Behind it is an instrument panel, with tachometer and speedometer displays. In the center of that display is a digital driver’s information center.

Range Rover Evoque

Land Rover keeps things simple with the center stack, itself dominated by a color touch screen display with attendant switches to the left and to the right. The console flows from the stack to the arm rest/storage compartment, and applies switches and knobs to operate the Meridian audio system, climate control, the emergency brake and all-wheel drive functions.

The transmission knob emerges from the center of the console and is followed by cup holders and a smart phone holder. USB ports and an auxiliary input port are present inside of the storage compartment. Underneath the flowing console is an open storage compartment.

Power-operated, 12-way perforated grain leather seats with lumbar support and driver’s memory is standard for the Evoque. Oxford leather is standard for the HSE edition on up. Alloy wheels, a front parking aid and ambient lighting are included.

Select models bring in front fog lights, automatic leveling, a navigation system, a panoramic glass roof with an integrated sun blind, brake assist, heated front seats, illuminated tread plates, and a rear aero flip spoiler.

Because Land Rover is as much about its off-road capabilities as well as its on-road behavior, this model comes equipped with numerous features to enhance the terrain experience. These include: hill descent control, roll stability control, and an active driveline in addition to torque vectoring.

Range Rover Evoque

Press the start button and the transmission shifter knob emerges, leaving its previous flush-with-the-console residence. You can operate the transmission in standard or sport mode, the latter enabling you to advance through all nine forward gears with ease.

Step on the accelerator and the Evoque moves capably forward. Hammer the accelerator and be prepared for some hesitation as the turbocharger spools up. Admittedly, the turbo lag was noticeable, especially as every Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) product to date was outfitted with a supercharger, my preferred method of forced induction.

I cannot give you the reason why Land Rover went with the turbo. However, that it is a less costly choice than a supercharger is a likely factor. That it is the only powertrain combination for this model could cost it some sales, especially when competitors such as BMW offer larger engines as well as turbodiesel options at that.

Range Rover Evoque

One area that certainly was not a complaint was the transmission. ZF has been supplying 8- and 9-speed transmissions to manufacturers around the world in much greater numbers of late, but complaints of mapping or shifting problems have followed. But that was not so with the Evoque as this model shifted smoothly and capably between gears with no hunting noted.

On-road handling is more than satisfactory; the steering is balanced and augmented by the torque vectoring system. Due in part to its compact size, its advanced design as well as its engineering dynamics, the Evoque maintained its composure on twisty roads as well as around corners, with very little body roll noted. Perhaps not as adept as a BMW X3, but equal to the Lexus NX. I’ve tested both models.

For this test I did not take the Evoque off road. My previous off-road experiences with Land Rover products is that these vehicles can handle a variety of surfaces, thanks to its terrain management system. The response settings include general driving; grass, gravel, and snow; mud and ruts; and sand. Choosing the correct mode enables you to take this handsome urban traveler to places most competing models simply won’t go.

November 2014: Boom Times for Auto Sales Continue

December 3, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

November 2014 auto sales increase by 5 percent.

The good times are continuing for the US auto industry, now nearing the end of its fifth year of recovery from 2009’s depressively low sales numbers. Most automakers claimed healthy increases for November 2014, led by the Chrysler Group’s 20 percent increase over a year earlier. Sales for Toyota, Honda and GM also increased while Nissan and Ford registered slight declines for the month.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit
Jeep sales continue to pace the Chrysler Group.

GM, Ford and Chrysler

GM continues to lead the market, enjoying a 6 percent sales increase for November. Buick and GMC paced sales with Chevrolet sales increasing a modest 3 percent. However, Cadillac sales continue to pull back, falling 19 percent for the month. GM credited Black Friday sales with boosting is numbers. Said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president of Sales Operations, “The buzz around Black Friday helped drive strong showroom traffic but there was a lot more at work in the market.” McNeil noted that more people have jobs, household wealth is on the rebound and gas prices are falling.

Ford sales fell for the third consecutive month as the automaker retools to produce its all-new 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck. Ford also said that it is ramping up production for two other models — Mustang and Transit — and expects brand sales to stay depressed for the short term. Even so, Ford managed to sell more than 8,700 Mustangs for the month, including its all-new version. Lincoln sales provided a bright spot for the month, rising by 21 percent as interest in the all-new MKC and the latest generation Navigator paced the brand.

Chrysler sales continue to outpace the industry, increasing an even 20 percent for the month. Sales of Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep and Fiat brand vehicles rose for the month with the Chrysler 200 sedan enjoying a 155 percent increase over the same month in 2013. Notably, 11 Chrysler Group models set records during the month with the Chrysler 200 recording its best sales month ever.

Toyota 4Runner

Toyota sales climbed by 6 percent in November 2014.

Toyota, Honda and Nissan

Toyota reported sales of 183,346 units, reflecting a three percent increase for the month. Camry, Corolla and RAV4 each topped 20,000 units sold with 4Runner sales up by 53 percent for November. Lexus sales increased by 7.3 percent, helping the luxury brand to keep pace with segment leaders. “Lexus set an all-time November sales record thanks in part to the momentum surrounding the arrival of the newest edition to the lineup, the RC coupes,” said Steve Hearne, vice president for sales and dealer development. “As a result, Lexus outpaced the luxury market with strong growth for both passenger cars and utility vehicles.”

Honda sales increased by 4.6 percent on strong sales of its CR-V crossover, midsize Accord and compact Civic lines. Honda sold a record 32,378 CR-Vs, the best-selling compact crossover utility vehicle in America. Honda’s truck sales, including utility vehicles, came in at 51,735 units, a November record. Sales for Acura, Honda’s premium brand, rose by 2 percent based on strong demand for its TLX and ILX sedans.

Nissan’s bid to catch Honda continues to stall as sales fell by 3.1 percent for the month. Nissan division sales fell by 1.7 percent while Infiniti sales sank by 13.3 percent. However, year-to-date sales are up 11.5 percent and the Nissan brand has already set its all-time US sales record. One particularly bright spot for Nissan was its Rogue crossover as its sales topped 15,000 units, increasing by nearly 44 percent for the month.

Kia K900

Kia sales continue to grow even as cousin Hyundai slips.
Pictured,
the flagship K900 sedan.

Subaru, Hyundai and Kia

With one month remaining in the year, Subaru has already broken its all-time sales record. November sales climbed by 24 percent and are on pace to top 500,000 units before the month is out. Like Chrysler with its 56 consecutive months of month-over-month sales increases, Subaru’s streak is now at 36 months. Two models, Forester and Outback, are leading the charge for Subaru.

Hyundai and Kia continue to go in opposite directions in terms of US auto sales. Hyundai sales fell by 4.2 percent for the month, while Kia sales rose by 6.6 percent. Kia continues to enjoy strong demand for its Optima sedan, its best selling model. Soul sales slipped in November, while Sorento sales declined slightly.

Hyundai sales fell for the month, but are still ahead of last year’s record-setting pace by 3,400 units. Elantra sales topped the 200,000 units sold threshold for the year with the Sonata expected to follow within the next day. Sales of the all-new Genesis sedan were up 57 percent for the month.

Audi Q3

Audi continues to win a larger piece of the luxury segment pie.

Volkswagen and the Rest

Volkswagen’s struggles may not be over, but it is seeing increased sales for the second month in a row. November sales rose by 3.2 percent, paced by Jetta sales up by almost 32 percent. The strongest gain was recorded by the Golf as sales rose by nearly 86 percent for the month. “We are thrilled with the accolades the Golf family of vehicles has received, including the 2015 Motor Trend Car of the Year. These awards applaud the line up’s versatility, quality and value,” said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America. “Partnered with the refreshed Jetta and upcoming redesigned Touareg, the potential for increased showroom traffic looks promising.”

Among the German luxury makes, Audi continues to shine the brightest. Audi sales rose by 22 percent, BMW sales fell by 2.3 percent and Mercedes-Benz sales increased by 2 percent. With a 20,000 unit lead going into December, Mercedes has sewn up first place for luxury brands this year.

Other manufacturers and brands reporting sales included Mitsubishi, up 7.6 percent; Mazda, up 2.4 percent; Tesla Motors, up 6.5 percent; Volvo, down 14.4 percent; Jaguar Land Rover, down 19 percent and Porsche, up 18.5 percent.

November 2014 Auto Sales

Automotive analysts have pegged November’s SAAR at 17.2 million units based on 1.3 million+ models sold for the month. The five percent increase comes as manufacturers ramp up year-end specials. Keep an eye on special deals that can shave even more money off of sticker prices.

Gasoline Fuel Choices for Today’s Cars

November 26, 2014 by admin 3 Comments

Buy a new car, especially one that requires gasoline, and you may soon find that the grade of gasoline you thought it should take is not the correct one.

Most service station pumps offer three grades of gasoline with octane ratings of 86 to 87 (regular), 89 (mid grade) and 91 to 93 for premium. The price spread between the lowest and highest grades is as much as 50 cents, making for quite a price difference if you have a gas tank of 15 to 20 gallons or more.

What grade gasoline should you use? Only what the owner’s manual tells you to use. The car manufacturer is the only source for determining the right grade, what must be followed if you want to avoid engine damage and voiding your warranty.

Like all gasoline-powered Jaguars, this one requires premium grade gasoline.
Like all gasoline-powered Jaguars, this one requires premium grade gasoline.

What is Octane?

Octane indicates a fuel’s ability to resist engine knock. If the octane is not high enough, then the engine will not be able to handle the heat and pressure.

When driving, this problem becomes apparent if you hear the engine pinging, rattling or knocking. Constant engine knock can damage the engine’s pistons, bearings and head gaskets, causing engine damage. Are you prepared to pay thousands of dollars in repairs?

6.2-liter Supercharged LSA engine
Supercharged or turbocharged, premium fuel is required.

Recommended Versus Required Grades

The manufacturer’s language for the octane or gasoline grade used will typically state words such as “recommended” or “required.”

If a certain grade of gasoline is recommended, that means you can use whatever grade you want. A recommended higher grade gasoline may deliver slightly improved performance, but the lower grade is still safe to use.

When a certain grade is required, then you must use it. Typically, this requirement is for turbocharged or supercharged vehicles that must take premium grade gasoline as these engines operate at higher compression ratios.

Other vehicles that take a lower grade under normal circumstances may require a higher grade when towing. Again, consult your owner’s manual.

Knock Protection

Cars built today are outfitted with a knock sensor, what retards ignition that causes knocking. This sensor prevents engine damage, but it also reduces performance and fuel economy slightly.

When the knock sensor fails you will know it — your car will run poorly and the check engine light will activate. Service your car immediately, do not drive it.

Fuel Considerations

Even with the lower recommended gasoline grade some drivers insist on filling their vehicles up with a higher grade, thinking that their cars will perform better. Generally, that is not the case and what you end up with is paying more at the pump than you need to.
