Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Smart Concept: Jeep Grand Wagoneer

September 4, 2020 by admin 1 Comment

The Wagoneer line will elevate Jeep’s profile.

The long-awaited return of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer is nearly complete. On Thursday, Fiat Chrysler revealed the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept, a full-size SUV that blends the brand’s off-road credentials with luxury. The Grand Wagoneer represents one part of a Wagoneer sub-brand that will serve as the top-tier of the Jeep brand. Much in the same way Land Rover utilizes Range Rover for its elite line, Jeep appears ready to do the same.

As with any concept, this one isn’t the production version, but we think it will be very close. The concept clearly demonstrates where Jeep is headed as the Wagoneer features an elegant grille, 24-inch polished wheels, a long greenhouse, and LED touches.

From Ram to Jeep

To develop the Wagoneer line, Jeep turned to Ram’s platform underpinning the Ram 1500 pickup truck (one difference is that the Jeep will not utilize the solid rear axle in the Ram, utilizing an independent rear suspension).

That body-on-frame platform is currently without an SUV variant, unlike GM and Ford who have built various large SUVs for the Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, and Lincoln brands. As such, the Wagoneer should start somewhere above $60,000 and top $100,000 in its fully loaded Grand Wagoneer guise. A mid-2021 debut is likely with the company’s Warren, Michigan, plant producing the new models.

Elegance and Technology

Jeep did not reveal the Grand Wagoneer’s dimensions, but many of the other details are apparent, including the wood and leather interior, a digital display cluster, upper and lower infotainment screens, a front passenger screen, and additional screens for rear-seat climate control and infotainment. Further, the upscale Jeep will earn the company’s latest infotainment software, Uconnect 5.

The concept also features a 23-speaker McIntosh audio system connected to a 24-channel amplifier. Jeeps says the audio elements are designed in aluminum and gloss black, paralleling the look of McIntosh’s typical high-end home audio systems.

A Three-Row First

This will be the first three-row Wagoneer model. The concept shows a model with room for as many as seven occupants with first- and second-row captain’s chairs and a third-row bench seat.

Quite possibly an 8-row variant will be offered with a bench seat replacing the middle-row thrones. In any case, Jeep is touting this SUV’s interior room, luxury elements, and amenities.

Electrified Powertrain System

We don’t know everything about the various powertrains on tap, but the concept is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Jeep intends to push electrification across the brand, using the concept’s reveal as an opportunity to debut the Wrangler 4Xe, which is also a PHEV. These models follow the Renegade and Compass hybrids already on sale across Europe.

The gas engines in the hybrid fold will likely include the 3.6-liter V6 and the 5.7-liter V8 used by Ram. Quite possibly the turbo-diesel 3.0-liter V6 will also find a place. All three engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Grand Wagoneer comes with standard four-wheel drive. Notably, Jeep says it will offer three distinct four-by-four systems and supply an optional air suspension. Thus, the Grand Wagoneer is poised to travel places few big SUVs dare to go. Whether buyers would do so is another matter, but simply having that capability will give Jeep a leg-up in a competitive segment.

Grand Wagoneer Heritage

Jeep launched the first Wagoneer in 1962 for the 1963 model year. It was the first four-wheel-drive vehicle paired with an automatic transmission, effectively pioneering the modern SUV movement.

In 1984, Jeep rolled out the Grand Wagoneer, introducing leather upholstery, air conditioning, AM/FM/CB stereo systems, and extra insulation to deaden sound. These “premium” touches paved the way for competitors to follow, with many not joining the fray until early this century.

An Expanded Jeep Line

With the Wagoneer set to return in various guises, the Jeep brand should easily build on the momentum that has advanced this marque over the past decade. Once the pandemic passes and sales activity returns to normal, Jeep should sell more than 1 million units annually stateside with at least double that globally.

We think the Grand Wagoneer is a welcome addition to the Jeep line, although we’ve been disappointed that Ram never took advantage to build its own modern big SUV.

Rumors? We Got Them!

August 21, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

No automotive journalist worth his/her salt is going to promote a rumor as a bona fide story. There is too much to lose reputation-wise by cooking up a story and going with it.

That said, we’ve heard our share of rumors or have enough information about a future product or company plans to occasionally speculate what may be on the horizon. That forms a good basis for following a story as it develops.

We’ve all followed rumors these past few years about what the next-generation Corvette (C8) might look like and put up with endless teasers for the Toyota Supra (what a long wait). Both models are here and we’re glad the speculation has been put to rest. But other rumors are in the wings and this time we’re sharing a few of the stories we think have merit.

5 Rumors We’re Following

1. Jeep Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer – It isn’t a secret Jeep plans to push beyond the Grand Cherokee to tackle the full-size SUV market. We wondered if Ram would get its own Tahoe/Suburban fighter, but it appears that they won’t. Instead, Fiat Chrysler’s SUV brand will see at least one new model next year. Will it be the Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer, or both? Our best guess is that a Wagoneer with an assortment of engine choices rivaling the Ram 1500 will debut first. It’ll cover the $55-$75,000 range just as models from Ford, Chevrolet, and GMC do right now. However, we doubt Jeep will stop there. A grand variant replete with real wood pore trim, the finest leathers, carbon fiber embellishments, and cutting-edge tech and safety features seems likely. This one will push the Jeep’s price above $100,000 and take it all to the Range Rover.

2. Ford Raptor Extraordinaire – You must know that Ford isn’t about to cede the Raptor’s dominance quietly to Ram when the 1500 TRX debuts. The hotted-up Ram looks every bit the “apex predator” the brand claims it is. After all, when a Hellcat engine inspires a truck, you expect it to do great things. We think a future Raptor will challenge the TRX with the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine powering the Mustang GT500. Rated at least 700 horsepower, the engine was supposed to serve as the “send-off” for the current-generation Raptor, but that’s not happening. Instead, when the new Raptor debuts in the next year, the TRX’s stay on top of the off-road prowess world may very well prove a brief one.

3. The Camaro gets an extension – Ever since the Chevrolet Camaro returned, it has offered a solid entry in the sport coupe segment. But in recent years, sales have fallen, even with an updated model following in 2015. The Mustang continues to outsell the competition, but the aged Dodge Challenger now outsells the Camaro. And the Challenger does this without a convertible option. Rumors that the Camaro would not survive beyond 2023 began surfacing last year. We think these rumors have merit as it is difficult to justify building a vehicle that sells only 60,000 units annually. But before you think the Camaro will once again be canceled, we’re not convinced that it will. We think a future model based on the same architecture underpinning the Cadillac CT4/CT5 is possible. We also think that once more Corvette models debut, a Cadillac variant will reappear. There’s more of a connection between Cadillac and Chevrolet on the performance side than you may realize. Think: shared cost savings.

4. Return of the Nissan Xterra – An all-new Nissan Frontier is waiting in the wings. This year, we got a taste of the powertrain in the 2020 Frontier and loved it! Nissan’s Frontier is a solid model and we think the new truck will present a formidable challenge to the competition, including the Toyota Tacoma. What’s missing is an SUV variant. Just as the Tacoma and 4Runner share the same platform, the Frontier and Xterra once did as well. We know Nissan is looking closely at bringing back the Xterra just as Armada and Titan sales wither. Nissan might kill off its full-size models and keep with the volume sellers instead. The Frontier has a proven track record and a revived Xterra would benefit from that.

5. More mergers, additional acquisitions – COVID-19 has certainly taken a hit on the automotive industry. Sales plummeted, billions of dollars have been lost, and consumer sentiment is uncertain. We know Fiat Chrysler and the PSA Groupe are set to conclude their merger in 2021. But that won’t be the last one. Ford is an attractive merger candidate and profitable too – its AI unit is propping the company, although its stock price remains quite low. We think GM will widen its partnership with Honda to produce EVs, but we don’t expect the two companies to merge. But if the Chinese manufacturers begin selling cars in the U.S., we think a lot will change. Companies like Hyundai-Kia may rethink their independence and form a strategic alliance or an outright merger to remain strong enough to survive long term. Our best guess is that any one of the smaller emerging EV manufacturers such as Lucid, Rivian, and Bollinger Motors will eventually be absorbed. But not Tesla.

What’s Next?

How about you? What rumors have you heard? Some may sound outlandish but often the talk is based on substantive information that has been discussed before. We think one of the biggest blockbuster deals will be announced next year with the Volkswagen Group as one of the key players.

Road Beast: 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

November 7, 2016 by admin 9 Comments

A track-ready Jeep for the performance-minded driver.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT
2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT.

Think “Grand Cherokee” and all kinds of terms may come to mind. Premium SUV. Capable off-road navigator. Competent towing machine.

We should add “road beast” to that list, especially when considering the specialty and high-end Grand Cherokee SRT. The SRT is not a new model as this writer spent ample time with the original, first presented in 2014. Now in its fourth year, this 475-horsepower example of track-capable prowess simply outperforms any Jeep built in the brand’s 75-year history.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

It is also the most expensive Jeep you can find anywhere with a starting price coming in at an eyebrow-raising $66,795. That’s $36,000 more than the base model, with additional amenities pushing your final cost even higher.

Indeed, options such as the 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system ($1,995), an interior wrapped in Laguna leather ($4,995), and a Trailer Tow Group Four package ($995) were among the features included on my test model. Add in the dual-pane panoramic sunroof ($2,095), high-performance Brembo brakes with red brake calipers ($1,295), and 20-inch lightweight forged wheels ($1,295) and your final price may top $80,000.

Well, perhaps the price will come in closer to $77,000 when package discounts are included. Either way, what you have here is a Jeep that pushes into previously unchartered pricing territory.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

An Explosive HEMI Engine

There are many things that set the SRT apart from all other Grand Cherokee models. The most obvious is the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine exclusive to this trim. Besides packing 475 horsepower, it has an output of 470 pound-feet of torque, and comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters.

Jeep says the Grand Cherokee SRT has a 0-to-60 mph time of just 4.8 seconds as well as a 0-to-100-to-0 time of 16.3 seconds. Further, the SRT conquers the quarter-mile in the mid-13s range and has a top speed of 160 mph.

Readers should know that this driver never pushed the SRT anywhere near the top speed capabilities this road beast offers. However, when it came to testing many of its other on-road antics, those features were pursued with glee.

Model Year Updates

New for this year is an updated fascia, featuring an exclusive grille, fog lamps, and a unique leather package. The expected blacked-out look is found across the upper and lower grilles, the fog lamp pockets, on the lower portion of the side mirrors, and on the rear diffuser with its extra large dual exhaust ports.

The test model featured a Velvet Red Pearl finish, offering a handsome complement to the blacked-out look. Eight other color choices are available.

Other exterior touches include gunmetal headlamp bezels, a unique hood with functional heat extractors, black roof molding, and fully polished 20-inch aluminum wheels in satin clear coat. The overall presentation is at once sporty and intimidating — you’ll know this is no ordinary SUV when you spot it in your rear mirror as it quickly approaches, then moves past you.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

Available Laguna Leather Interior

Inside, you’ll find other features unique to the SRT. Starting with the seats, the perforated leather-trimmed surfaces with suede inserts offer a fetching presentation. But with the optional perforated Laguna leather-trimmed seats, you see a prime example of what Jeep’s designers can do.

The Laguna package covers the dashboard, the lower doors, and the front armrest/storage compartment. It is a type of high-end leather typically found in yachts and corporate jets. Yes, it is that beautiful to behold. And immensely comfortable too.

Other standout interior features include a leather-wrapped, flat-bottomed steering wheel, a sporty instrument panel with overlapping dials, a generously portioned center console color display, and the drive select knob. Open-pore wood trim and brightwork trim are additional embellishments.

Selec-Trac System

That knob manages the SRT’s Selec-Trac system with five dynamic modes — automatic, sport, track, snow, and tow. Yes, this SUV is ready for track time as it is equipped with a higher-performance suspension with active damping — the better to maintain control when navigating tight turns or conquering the slalom.

Whether you intend to take the SRT to the track or not, you’ll immediately understand that this is no ordinary SUV. Instead, the SRT strikes at the heart of the Porsche Cayenne, falling somewhere between the Cayenne Turbo and Cayenne S in performance, while costing thousands of dollars less than the competition.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

Press lightly on the gas pedal and the SRT purrs. Stomp hard and the engine bellows, the tires squeal, and you’ll find yourself pressed into the seat back. However, before you start, move the dial to sport mode and you’ll stay in gear longer and enjoy improved throttle response.

When it comes to SUVs, tamping the brakes on twisty roads is a given — too much weight and body roll conspire to adversely impact steering and make handling a chore, while increasing the chance of a deadly rollover accident.

But not so with the SRT — even though the feedback isn’t especially noteworthy, that this SUV stays planted much in the same way as a Charger or a Challenger is a fact worth amplifying. Credit grippy tires, superior damping, and a lowered stance for its superb driving and handling dynamics.

How to Activate Launch Control

If you can take the SRT out on the open road — or wherever it is both plausible and safe to let her rip — try the LAUNCH control feature.

Press the “launch control” switch on selec-trac, followed by activating launch control, then launch RPM set-up. With your left foot on the brake and your right foot pressing the gas pedal all the way to the floor for wide-open throttle, hold it there until you’re cleared for launch. Then, remove your foot from the brake and the SRT moves forward at top speed.

While the SRT is prepping to launch, the engine and transmission are immediately recalibrated to advance full launch. At the same time, the power spread is adjusted with 30 percent sent to the front wheels and 70 percent to the rear wheels. Under such potent conditions, you want this capable machine to stay fully planted. It is and it does.

2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

Your Choice of Grand Cherokee Models

Investing in the SRT shows a commitment to a high level of performance. Of course, not everyone wants or can afford such an ambitious package. Instead, models powered by the standard 295-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 or the 3.0-liter turbodiesel (240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque) will do. There’s also a 360-horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI V8 available on higher trim models and exclusive to 4×4 models.

What about the long-rumored Grand Cherokee Hellcat model? Some have asked if this model will one day become a reality. I can tell you that the answer is no and yes.

The “no” has to do with the naming convention. Fiat Chrysler ascribes “Hellcat” to Dodge models only — Charger and Challenger. When it comes to Jeep, the term “Trackhawk” will be used for models powered by the same 707-horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine found under every Hellcat’s hood. So, the answer is a resounding, if not qualified — YES!

The Trackhawk’s arrival is scheduled for 2017 and will slot above the SRT in performance and likely in price. It is expected to precede the inevitable return of the still larger Grand Cherokee, Jeep’s answer to the Range Rover.

To sum up, the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is everything performance drivers want. That is, if they desire an SUV. The SRT’s higher than a sedan or coupe profile is a big difference, but at least this model sits lower to the ground than other Grand Cherokees.

Jeep Patriot, Compass Gain a Temporary Reprieve

June 21, 2016 by admin Leave a Comment

Two compact Jeeps will be replaced by one new model in 2017.

Is this the future Jeep pickup truck?
Is this the future Jeep pickup truck?

The Jeep brand’s two smallest models slotted above the Renegade may reach the 2017 model year after all. The Jeep Compass and Patriot, compact SUVs introduced in 2007, will be built until Dec. 23, 2016. A Brazilian-manufactured replacement vehicle bearing one of the two model names will launch in 2017, according to Automotive News.

Plant and Product Shuffling

The reprieve comes as Fiat Chrysler realigns its manufacturing base to build more SUVs. Both the Compass and the Patriot as well as the Dodge Dart are assembled in Belvidere, Illinois. All three models will be canceled or moved out to make way for the Jeep Cherokee.

The Cherokee is currently built in Toledo, Ohio, but will be moved to Illinois in an effort to provide additional capacity for the next-generation Jeep Wrangler and a much anticipated Jeep pickup truck. Following extensive retooling, Cherokee production is due to begin in May.

The plant shuffling also extends to Sterling Heights, Michigan, where the Chrysler 200 midsize sedan is being built, but in modest numbers. FCA plans to lay off an entire shift of workers as it realigns Chrysler 200 production with demand. Sales of the 200 are down sharply over last year as consumers shift to pickup trucks and SUVs.

By 2018, the Sterling Heights plant will begin making the next-generation Ram 1500 pickup truck. FCA is still looking for a partner to build the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Dart, models it says it no longer have priority in its portfolio. So far, no manufacturer has been identified as a potential partner.

Lengthy Model Run

Eleven years is a long time for a model run and both the Compass and Patriot are showing their age. The two models were extensively updated in 2011 as part of a massive product overhaul conducted by the then Chrysler Group in advance of its merger with Fiat.

Strong incentives coupled with increased interest by consumers in all matters of SUV have helped Patriot and Compass sales stay strong. However, with new models above (Cherokee) and under (Renegade), customers have much better choices.

Future Jeep Product

FCA has two significant moneymakers in its Jeep and Ram brands. However, unlike Ram, Jeep is now a global brand and will continue to provide the most significant growth and drive the greatest profits for the automaker going forward.

FCA is also holding down costs by building Jeep’s two smallest models overseas. Besides the Brazilian-built replacement for the Compass and Patriot, the entry-level Renegade is built in Italy. All other Jeep models are built in the US.

Slotted above the Cherokee is the Grand Cherokee and in its own special category is the Jeep Wrangler, the only body-on-frame Jeep model presently built.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reprise

In a Jan. 2016 update to FCA’s 2014-2018 business plan, the automaker noted that future “white-space” products are planned – Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Jeep pickup truck.

The Grand Wagoneer name was last used in 1991, a model based on the Jeep Wagoneer, itself introduced in 1963. The original Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer was based on Jeep’s full-size truck platform. Later Grand Wagoneer models incorporated features common to today’s SUVs, including a roof rack with rails, power bucket seats, leather surfaces, and upgraded sound systems.

As for the new Grand Wagoneer we know it will be a three-row luxury model, based on the next-generation Grand Cherokee platform. Further, FCA has promised the grandest of all Jeeps will compete with Land Rover for luxury SUV shoppers. FCA will introduce the Grand Wagoneer to dealers only this August. As for the rest of us, expect the luxury Jeep’s global unveiling to take place in a major US auto show by early next year.

New Products May Bolster Ram Brand

November 5, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

Where is Fiat Chrysler Automobile taking the Ram brand? A large SUV is under consideration, what could bring sales and big profits to this truck-based marque.

Dodge Ramcharger
An earlier Dodge Ramcharger SUV.

Ever since Fiat Chrysler Automobiles separated Ram from Dodge to form a distinct brand, enthusiasts have wondered if additional products might eventually join the model line. Well, those products have come in the form of two Fiat-supplied products — the ProMaster Van and the Promaster City — a pair of commercial vehicles accounting for fewer than 1 in 10 Ram models.

The 1500 as well as the 2500/3500 series pickup trucks has essentially been the Ram brand, but other models are under consideration. This past August Auto Trends explored the possibility of a midsize Jeep pickup, one that might also yield a Ram variant, to replace the previous Dodge/Ram Dakota.

Jeep hasn’t committed to re-entering the expanding segment, but as Ford seriously considers returning with an all-new Ranger, the possibility of new models from Fiat Chrysler shouldn’t be quickly dismissed.

A Big Ram SUV?

Last week, Automotive News shared the news that a large SUV based on the Ram 1500 line is a possibility. That model, if built, would compete against the Chevrolet Suburban and Ford Expedition, SUVs derived from each manufacturer’s pickup truck line.

Fiat Chrysler President and CEO Sergio Marchionne sees a segment ripe for the participation and believes that his company has “…a reasonable chance of getting at least part of that market.”

He also believes fuel prices will remain low for the foreseeable future, although it would take several years to ready such a model for the market. Anything can happen in the interim.

Readying a New Ram 1500

The current generation Ram 1500 arrived on the market in 2010 and received an update in 2013. It will receive yet another refresh before the next generation model arrives in 2019. The delay comes as Fiat Chrysler pours money into resurrecting Alfa Romeo. It will also permit time for an expected aluminum-bodied truck to make its debut.

Likely, the big Ram SUV would follow the new pickup trucks by a year, a customary delay that Ford and Chevrolet usually follow with their own models. That means the new model is still four years away and a lot can happen between now and then.

Making Money With Big SUVs

Larger vehicles, including SUVs have some of the highest profit lines in the business. The last time Chrysler fielded such a model was in the two-door Dodge Ramcharger, a full-size SUV built from 1974 to 1994. The Ramcharger was based on Dodge’s earlier D Series line. But, when the all-new Dodge Ram rolled out, it was retired.

Also, instead of continuing with the Ramcharger, Chrysler concentrated on building the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango, two distinctly different midsize SUVs. Continuing with the Ramcharger would have also adversely affected the manufacturer’s corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) ratings — the company has long been top heavy with less fuel efficient models.

A Three-Row Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Bringing a new SUV to the Ram line would come just as the automaker readies another product, the three-row Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Unlike a potential body-on-frame Ram SUV, the Grand Wagoneer will be of unibody construction. FCA intends to have it compete with the likes of Land Rover, by taking a more upscale approach to the market.

Likely, FCA is looking at other products to expand the Ram line. Beyond a large or midsize SUV, the lower end of the market might also yield a product. However, fuel prices, FCA profitability and market factors can impact these plans, pushing some products back while perhaps bringing a few others to the forefront.
