Lexus GX:
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

November 5, 2019 by admin 2 Comments

It may be an aged design, but the Lexus GX 460 possess off-road chops.

Toyota builds several modern and forward-thinking models, but the Lexus GX 460 is not one of them. Indeed, this midsize traditional body-on-frame utility vehicle features an aged design, which is undergirded by the same platform supporting the Toyota 4Runner.

The Lexus has a modern look, which does its best to match this marque’s persona. Underneath, its powertrain is old and inefficient, although we give it props for its off-road prowess. Here’s what we find are its good, bad, and ugly attributes.

The Good

1. Who doesn’t love a traditional SUV?

Well, we must admit that many people these days are looking for a modern model, particularly a crossover with unibody construction. Those vehicles have rigid bodies, great steering, and a smooth ride. The GX 460 boasts none of these. Instead, it delivers capable approach and departure angles, although we must admit our frustration of not knowing precisely what these measurements are. We do know that ground clearance measures 8.3 inches, which is about average for the segment.

2. We also like that the Lexus GX has full-time four-wheel drive.

Why mess with two-wheel drive when this vehicle’s main strength is its off-road capabilities? You’ll also find active traction control for wet pavement and crawl control available with the off-road package on the top-trim Luxury model.

3. Who doesn’t like captain’s chairs?

This Lexus offers them in the second row and with each one heated. We think they’re almost as good as the seats up front. Almost, but not quite. Other touches we like include the imitation leather seats, which should hold up better than the standard hides. On the upper trims, semi-aniline leather is included or available.

The Bad

1. As far as engines go, the 4.6-liter V8 powering the GX sees like a throwback to another era.

Specifically, it puts out just 301 horsepower, which is the same as Toyota’s 3.5-liter V6 engine. Torque output measures 329 pound-feet, giving just a bit more power for passing and pulling. In other words, the GX starts slow out of the gate and offers leisurely passing performance. We might also take issue with its six-speed automatic transmission, which seems absent several cogs in an era where 8-, 9-, and 10-speed transmissions dominate.

2. Is it good, bad or is it ugly?

We’ll put the GX’s side-swinging rear door the bad category, at least for southpaws as the door swings to the right. In any case, the door’s swing can become an issue when parallel parking or wherever space is tight. Obviously, there is no power-open option as you get with a liftgate.

3. Technology is a mixed bag.

On the one hand, you get Siri Eyes Free. On the other hand, you won’t find smartphone compatibility as neither Apple CarPlay nor Google Android Auto is offered. How sad is that? If you want navigation, you’ll have to pay for it or make the trim upgrade to find it.

The Ugly

1. Perhaps the GX’s greatest weakness is with its fuel economy.

With an EPA rating of 15 mpg city 20 mpg highway and 17 mpg combined, it is one thirsty vehicle. Even then, we doubt you’ll meet the EPA expectations, especially once you venture off-road. Oh, did we mention you must use premium fuel too? That’ll add to your fuel costs.

2. Another area where the GX performs poorly is in all things safety.

Unlike other Lexus models with standard active safety technology, the GX does not have some of these features. What you will find is standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want lane-departure warning and adaptive cruise control, you’ll find it within a package on the top-level GX Luxury trim. Full-speed automatic emergency braking is not available, however.

The Verdict

The 2020 GX is the budget-friendly Lexus off-roader with a starting price some $30,000 below that of the top-of-the-line Land Cruiser-based LX. In addition, it is much more than a dressed-up Toyota 4Runner with its own powertrain and luxury embellishments to show for it. However, it is clearly an aged model in a segment that’s gone full modern. That said, its off-road strength beats most competitors, with perhaps the Land Rover Discovery giving it the best run for the money.

Robust SUV: 2018 Land Rover Discovery

August 1, 2018 by admin 5 Comments

The Land Rover Discovery simply gets the job done.

2018 Land Rover Discovery
The 2018 Land Rover Discovery offers two engine choices: gas and diesel.

If you’re shopping for a highly capable luxury sport utility vehicle, the 2018 Land Rover Discovery is certainly worth a look. This medium-to-large SUV offers strong engine choices and pairs them with an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, your cost can quickly climb, while smartphone compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is non-existent.

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery returns virtually unchanged from last year when the current model rolled out. The latest Discovery offers a fresh interpretation on a classic model.

2018 Land Rover Discovery Overview

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery is offered in three trims: SE ($52,090), HSE ($58,490) and HSE Luxury ($65,490). Add $995 for the destination charge. Add another $2,000 for the turbo-diesel engine.

Land Rover says the Discovery seats 5 + 2, an acknowledgment that the available third-row seat is best used as a jump seat. That seat does, however, accommodate adults, but with one important qualifier: short distance travel is just okay. Beyond that, save the seat for the youngsters, but only when needed.

2018 Land Rover Discovery

The standard equipment list is robust as it includes such items as automatic halogen headlights, power-folding and heated side mirrors with approach lights, 19-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate and rear fog lamps. Inside, the Discovery SE comes with a tilt steering column, dual-zone climate control, a 10-speaker audio system, Bluetooth and a 10-inch touchscreen display. Grained leather seats and power-controlled front seats are also standard.

Move up to the HSE trim (my test model) and this one adds LED lights, front recovery hooks, garnishment improvements and an electric sunroof. Inside, the HSE has a power-adjustable steering column, upgraded wood trim, a 10-speaker Meridian audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, an interactive driver display and additional USB ports (second row).

The HSE Luxury adds heated windshield washer jets and front fog lights. Inside, the equipment roster includes ambient lighting, power-controlled third-row seats, Windsor leather, heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel.

Choose Your Engine

Manufacturers typically have an assortment of engines and transmissions available when designing a new vehicle. The pair forms a vehicle’s powertrain, delivering what many hope is the right combination of performance, fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and in the case of Land Rover, pulling power.

Happily, the choices for Discovery shoppers are quite good. The standard engine is a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine with 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. It is used in a variety of applications across the Jaguar Land Rover universe with modest increases in horsepower, torque or both evident in some models. Land Rover pairs this engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The second engine is a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 with 254 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. It also works alongside an eight-speed automatic transmission. There are a few things worth noting about this engine, beginning with its quietness. Indeed, I didn’t look at the supplied documentation before getting behind the wheel of the Discovery and only discovered it was powered by a diesel once I began my driving. Yes, it is that quiet.

The diesel also has ample low-end grunt and supplies a 5 mpg fuel economy advantage over the gas burner. Certainly, the upgrade will cost you more upfront, but the advantages in power, towing, fuel efficiency and maintenance outweigh the cost, especially if you plan to keep your Discovery for many years.

The Discovery along with the BMW X5 are the only models in the segment still offering diesels. Competitors such as the Lexus GX, Audi Q7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class do not. If you’re concerned about higher diesel prices you should know that each of these models require premium gasoline, which costs nearly the same as diesel fuel.

Take the Discovery Offroad

Land Rover long ago discovered the confluence of on-road comfort and off-road prowess. It has only gotten better in both departments since the new models arrived on the scene over these past few years.

Each vehicle is quiet, rides very comfortably and looks great around town. Pull up to any venue and your Land Rover gets noticed.

But it is this model’s off-road chops that many buyers may not fully appreciate. Indeed, most will simply not go off-road, although the capabilities are most definitely there.

The current model utilizes unibody construction, which isn’t always appreciated for its off-road capabilities. However, manufacturers such as Jeep (Grand Cherokee) have found that they can build a unibody model that looks great around town while taking it to the off-road less traveled. In brief, unibody construction ensures improved body rigidity and handling over traditional body-on-frame SUVs.

2018 Land Rover Discovery

2018 Land Rover Discovery2018 Land Rover Discovery

The key beyond body build is, of course, four-wheel drive. In this case, Land Rover has such a system in place, including a low-range transfer case. The standard suspension system features a traditional coil-spring arrangement.

Typically, though, Land Rover supplies an air suspension system for our review. Here, the system adds 1.7 inches of lift to the Discovery’s noteworthy 11 inches of ground clearance. All told this enhanced SUV gains improved approach, breakover and departure angles, along with improved wading depth. You’ll opt for this system if you’re serious about off-roading.

Taking the Discovery off-road means utilizing its Terrain Response dial to tackle the kind of obstacle you’ll be facing. This computer-controlled system adjusts the height, the center differential lock and optional rear locker, manages throttle control intervention and adjusts throttle response. Keep an eye on the instrument panel as it renders cool scientific-like graphs to go with these changes.

Let’s Examine Technology

In our earlier overview, we looked at some of the tech features offered by Land Rover in the 2018 Discovery. No doubt, you’ll find a nice selection of audio systems, including Meridian.

2018 Land Rover DiscoveryWe like that Land Rover is also up on nearly everything else, including Bluetooth, USB ports and its own InControl infotainment system.

Naturally, the one void that gets noticed is Land Rover’s lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Neither is available as Land Rover’s focus is on its own InControl suite. JLR isn’t alone in not offering either system with any of its models. Mazda, Toyota and Lexus are also holdouts. One reason we’ve heard about the lack of smartphone compatibility has to do with maintaining proprietary information. If the automaker believes a third party might access confidential information about drivers or their technology, then that hesitancy is understood.

As for Land Rover, you can still use their navigation system to get you places. The InControl interface is fairly easy to use. The standard “Touch” system features an 8-inch touch-screen with intuitive touch and swiper controls. Opt for Touch Pro and the 10-inch touchscreen allows pinch-to-zoom gestures, which are ideal for controlling maps, media and settings. Voice recognition is added to this level as well. Some models include Touch Pro Duo, which brings in a second screen for controlling multiple features together.

Parting Thoughts: 2018 Land Rover Discovery

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery brings luxury, style and performance to the segment, and adds an element of off-road prowess that sets it apart from the competition. Most Land Rover buyers won’t be taking their SUVs off-roading, however. But if having that feature available if and when you need it is important to you, then it is hard to beat the Discovery at its game.

Land Rover Discovery Redux, HSE Luxury Style

August 22, 2017 by admin 3 Comments

A Land Rover Discovery with a supercharged gas engine.

2017 Land Rover Discovery
Second time around: 2017 Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury

The hits keep coming. Or at least the weekly model or two I have had the privilege of driving in 2017. This past week it was the Land Rover Discovery, the second time in two months the keys to this model and trim/grade fell into my hands.

Only this time the Discovery HSE Luxury came with a supercharged V6 gasoline model — the previous model featured a turbo-diesel.

2017 Land Rover Discovery

2017 Land Rover Discovery

Land Rover prices the 2017 Discovery costs from $49,990 for the gas model (SE) and $58,950 for the diesel (HSE). Other gas trims to consider include the HSE ($56,950), HSE Luxury ($63,950) and First Edition ($73,950). Add $995 for your destination fee and another $2,000 if you plan to upgrade to a diesel.

2017 Land Rover DiscoverySpend any time with the Land Rover Configurator — Range Rover and Discovery series alike — and you’ll find various grades and permutations of each model.

Beyond the eponymous Discovery’s four grades, you’ll find an array of packages for further customization. These include: three Black Design packages based on wheel size choices — 20-, 21-, and 22-inch wheels ($800-$3,200); a pair of complete dynamic design packages ($4,350 and $5,550); Drive and Drive Pro packages ($550 and $2,350); 7-Seat luxury climate ($2,180), vision assist ($1,000), and capability plus ($1,250).

My test model included nearly all of the top packages along with such individual upgrades as black roof rails ($400), head-up display ($950), ebony headliner ($350) and silicon silver metallic paint ($1,495). I counted 20 packages and options in all — Land Rover supplied a $350 headliner credit; I’m not sure if it was due to a long list of options or something else.

With all said and done, there were more than $18,000 in upgrades and options included, bringing the MSRP (sticker price) to a lofty $82,300. Notably, that price is in line with what well-equipped competing models offer from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW.

Discovery Model Highlights

Instead of rehashing the many similar points I made earlier with the 2017 Discovery, allow me to direct you to that review here. For this review, I’ll cover the main features of the latest model as well as expand on a few other areas of this model:

1. Engine — What do three liters of V6 power get you? With Land Rover, you have a choice of supercharged gas and turbocharged diesel options. Both engines displace exactly at 3.0 liters. The diesel has two advantages over the gas engine: a 5 mpg fuel economy edge and stronger boost down the line. But don’t discount the gas model as it delivers excellent off-the-mark acceleration. Plus, it doesn’t come with a $2,000 price premium. Land Rover matches both engines with a clean-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission.

2. Seating — Land Rover offers 2+3+2 seating in the Discovery, with the third row optional. If you go with the last row, you’ll find a 50:50 split fold-down bench seat. It offers decent shoulder and hip room, although taller riders may find head- and legroom tight. So, consider this space sufficient for youngsters and usable for adults in a pinch.

2017 Land Rover Discovery

2017 Land Rover Discovery

3. Storage — Having the benefit of a third row also creates one significant demerit. Namely, standard storage space is nonexistent as that third seat abuts the rear liftgate. I’ve never seen anything like it in other models as there is no way to store anything behind the rear seat. That said, Land Rover didn’t shortchange passenger space to create a token storage area. The good news here is that if you fold down one of the rear seats, you’ll gain some room. Drop the third row and you’ll enjoy 45 cubic feet of cargo space.

4. Off-Road — If you’re not familiar with Land Rover’s off-road capabilities, you’re in for a treat with the Discovery. The 2017 Discovery is an all-new model, replacing the previous LR4. This also means you’ll enjoy 11.1 inches of ground clearance compared to the 9.4 inches in the LR4. Importantly, fording depth is also up — 35.4 inches. If you have no plans for off-roading, then you’re not likely to opt for such features as the height-adjustable air suspension, low-range four-wheel drive, and the advanced traction system found in Terrain Response 2. But think of the possibilities!

5. Around Town — Most Land Rover owners will spend their time in and around town, taking their children to the ball field, commuting to work, shopping, sightseeing, and enjoying other pursuits common to today’s families. Compared with the LR4, the Discovery seems swift on its feet, thanks to a design that’s up to 800 pounds lighter than its predecessor with a far more rigid frame to go with it. This also means body roll stays at a minimum, so take on those twisty roads with confidence.

2017 Land Rover Discovery

6. Amenities — Land Rover is all about creature comforts and the Discovery does not disappoint. Not hardly. Standard equipment includes automatic headlamps, power-folding and heated side mirrors with approach lights, a panoramic glass roof, and a rear parking aid. You’ll also find keyless entry with push-button start, an 8-inch touchscreen, and a 10-speaker audio system. A dizzying array of amenities ups the luxury quotient, adding such features as LED headlights, a power sunroof, power tailgate, power drop/lift second- and third-row seats, heated front and rear seats, three-zone climate control, navigation, Meridian sound system, and a sound view camera. My test model added a front center console cooler compartment ($350), rear seat entertainment ($2,270), and features mentioned earlier.

Land Rover Discovery Parting Thoughts

So, what’s my opinion of the Land Rover Discovery the second time around?

First, it offers a distinct departure from the previous LR4. Traditional SUV fans may object to the change. All I can say is try it out, especially off road, to determine how the new Discovery performs.

Second, your price can quickly escalate if you’re not careful. A base SE trim will cost you $50,000, so my test model cost $32,000 more. That’s the high end of the model line. Personally, I would choose the diesel, stick with the HSE and pick the drive pro package. Yes, choose the 7-row package if you even think there is a possibility of carrying additional people from time to time. At this point, your total is about $66,000, the middle price range for this midsize SUV.

To the Manor Born: Range Rover Sport

July 18, 2017 by admin 4 Comments

Out and about with No. 2 of four models in the Range Rover collection.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport offers five powertrain choices, including diesel.

The Land Rover universe now encompasses six models — four Range Rovers and two Discovery series. There’s considerable overlap between some models, but there is enough distinctiveness present that each one has its own unique attributes, including the 2017 Range Rover Sport.

A 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport was a recent weekly driver, the second generation of this luxury SUV. Now in its fourth model year, the current-generation Range Rover Sport continues to hold its own in a highly competitive segment, delivering what customers want across five grades: SE ($65,650), HSE ($80,150), Supercharged ($80,650), Autobiography ($94,450) and SVR ($111,350). Add $995 for the destination charge.

Yes, that’s a huge spread between models, but if you’re happy with either a supercharged V6 or the turbo-diesel V6, you can hold your final price below $80,000.

New for 2017 are a host of now standard safety features, including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. The electronics system is now controlled by the Range Rover Sport’s 10.2-inch touchscreen.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Exterior Overview

Land Rover calls the Range Rover Sport a compact model, but it is anything but that. Indeed, its proportions align with median-sized models such as the Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class (formerly ML-Class). On the other hand, the Range Rover Evoque is definitely the “small time” player in this segment.

What you do have here is a sleek canvas marked by curved corners and peppered by sharp creases, distinctive sculpting, and vent embellishments. A high profile, strong shoulders, and a dramatically canted windshield are among the special features of note.

Standard exterior features include Xenon headlights with LED signature lights, automatic headlights, rear fog lights, and power-heated side folding mirrors with approach lights. Also available are front fog lights.

Wheel choices include 19- and 20-inch split-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels. An assortment of color options with contrasting roofs or a panoramic roof rounds out the exterior features.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Interior Highlights

2017 Land Rover Range RoverGive the Range Rover Sport much credit with providing a roomy interior. Its standard 2+3 seating offers excellent room all around.

You have the option of adding a third-row seat for two, but at great compromise to storage space and seating comfort for third-row passengers.

Opt for the third-row package ($2,750) and Land Rover throws in power control, a tire repair system, and 20-inch, five-spoke wheels.

The Range Rover’s cabin is expansive, bright, and elegantly appointed. High-end materials blanket the cabin — I couldn’t find one square inch of plastic.

Leather, wood, and chrome trim grace the interior. All switches, knobs, and buttons seem durable.

The front seats are plush and supportive; the rear 60:40 bench seat is comfortable, but not nearly as so as in the big Range Rover. Still, the cabin is exquisitely dressed, befitting a model of Range Rover stature.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

On the Road

Drive a 2017 Range Rover Sport and you have your choice of five engines. Well, not exactly. Two of the engines do double duty with enhanced computer programming squeezing out more horsepower or horsepower and torque. That said, our specifications table at the end of this article shows five engines.

The base engine is a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 generating 340 horsepower (380 available) and 332 pound-feet of torque. This engine powered my test model and is wholly sufficient for the Sport. Even so, the Land Rover Discovery I tested last month had the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with a whopping 443 pound-feet of torque. But if full-on power is your desire, then nothing short of the V8s making at least 500 horsepower will do. Each engine choice comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Superchargers provide superior off-the-mark acceleration compared to turbochargers, with the latter offering more boost further up the band curve. Jaguar Land Rover splits the technology by assigning turbos to diesel engines (and four-cylinder gas models) and superchargers to V6 and V8 gas engines. Either way, you win as there almost always is ample power from the smallest to the largest engine.

The Range Rover Sport seems too pretty to take off road, but if you’re so inclined, simply raise the suspension by 2.5 inches and give it a go. You’ll keep up with most everything out there, except perhaps that rock-crawling Jeep Wrangler. However, unlike the Wrangler, the Range Rover Sport supplies an absolutely comfortable on-road experience with a plush suspension and decent cornering thanks to its four-wheel drive system.

On one six-mile stretch of curvilinear pavement, I was able to experience just how well this SUV handles — it hugs the outside of the road with precision with very little body roll noted. This SUV imbues driver confidence in an all together stylish package.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Safety and Technology Features

It is common matter that luxury cars, especially SUVs, are not put through the same crash test evaluations of more mainstream models.

The cost of destroying pricey vehicles is the main inhibitor of conducting such tests, therefore neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has tested the Range Rover Sport.

SUVs as a rule perform better than cars in crash tests, thanks in large part to two factors: size and weight. Regardless, there is an inherent weakness present. Namely, a higher risk of tipping over. Roll stability control is an effective mitigator and the Range Rover Sport has this technology built in.

Other standard safety features include a suite of airbags, stability and traction control, and anti-lock brakes. This equipment is common to all cars, nonetheless.

If you want such driver assist features as adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, lane keep assist, and blind spot assist with reverse traffic detection, the Drive Pro Package is a $2,500 option on base models.

As for technologies, you get everything expected in a luxury SUV. That said, a surround view camera system comes bundled with configurable mood lighting and soft door close to form a $1,400 vision and convenience package. Other upgrades bring in an eight-inch rear entertainment system ($2,000), head-up display ($1,300), and an 18-speaker, 825-watt Meridian Surround Sound System ($1,100).

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Parting Thoughts

With the Velar now part of the Range Rover collection, shoppers have much to consider when shopping Land Rover. The latest Range Rover entry is just two inches shorter than the Sport, but it starts off with a turbo four-cylinder gas or diesel engine and tops out with a 380-horsepower supercharged V6. Definitely, if you place an importance on performance, the Sport gets the nod.

As for the Range Rover Sport, it does everything you expect in a five-passenger luxury SUV. If you need a seven-seater, then only the series-topping Range Rover will do, but its near $86,000 base price means a considerable cash outlay is in order.

Land Rover Discovery Resurrection!

June 20, 2017 by admin 3 Comments

Return of the top-of-the-line Discovery series.

2017 Land Rover Discovery
On or off road, the 2017 Land Rover Discovery shines.

Land Rover divides its universe between top-of-the-line Range Rover models (currently numbering four) and a pair of standard Discovery models. But there is nothing “regular” about the Discovery and Discovery Sport other than a base Discovery Sport SE is the only Land Rover with a starting price coming in under $40,000.

As for the eponymous Discovery, you need a scorecard to keep track of this model introduced in 1994, then briefly renamed the Discovery Series II, then succeeded by LR3 and LR4 models. For 2017, an all-new model is out and we’ve come full circle as it once again bears the Land Rover Discovery moniker.

2017 Land Rover Discovery

The 2017 Discovery costs from $49,990 for the gas model (SE) and $58,950 for the diesel (HSE). Other gas trims to consider include the HSE ($56,950), HSE Luxury ($63,950) and First Edition ($73,950). Besides the base diesel HSE, the HSE Luxury diesel costs ($65,950). Thus, choosing the turbo-diesel adds $2,000 to your corresponding trim. Add $995 for your destination fee.

A 2017 Land Rover Discovery HSE Luxury Td6 ($65,950) was a recent and worthy model supplied for my personal evaluation. The final price, however, was $80,150 reflecting several packages and individual option upgrades. These were: a Drive Pro package ($2,350), rear seat entertainment ($2,270), Namib Orange Premium Metallic paint ($1,495), Capability Plus package ($1,295), Vision Assist package ($1,200), head-up display ($950) and park assist ($800). I counted an additional nine options for a total of 16 — $13,205 in add ons plus a $995 destination fee.

2017 Land Rover Discovery

An Elegant, But Powerful Presence

The Land Rover Discovery projects a familiar stance with a sturdy, but elegant silhouette marked by huge D-I-S-C-O-V-E-R-Y lettering across the front edge of the hood. Just as Land Rover does with Range Rover, the overall brand lives in the shadow of the sub-brand. Yet, you’ll still find Land Rover badging in three places — two are on the C-pillars and the third rests upon the liftgate.

One of the most noticeable design features of the 2017 Discovery is the position of the front wheels — situated at the very front of the SUV. The rear wheels sit nearly as far back as they can go with enough overhang to provide generous storage space or an optional third row.

Stylish wraparound LED-accented headlights amplify the Discovery’s powerful expression along with a large lower grille opening pressed in by distinctive embrasures. A broad hood, strong shoulders, a rising beltline, and a stretched roofline are additional standout features. Angled roof pillars suggest movement, yet sturdiness. In particular, I like the thick C-pillars which leads to a long swatch of glass that appears to wrap around to the back.

From the rear, you’ll find an oversized spoiler and an unusual indentation housing the off-centered license plate holder. Oversized wraparound tail lamps and skid plates are other features of distinction. All models come with beautifully styled aluminum wheels set within all-season tires.

An Interior Fit for Royalty

Land Rover interiors are generally spacious, airy and opulently dressed. The 2017 Discovery succeeds in advancing that look. Most models offer two standard rows of seating with a third row for two individuals available. Personally, I would hesitate to add a third row unless the extra space was absolutely needed. Otherwise, you risk losing valuable cargo space. For shoppers needing the room, a stretched wheelbase Range Rover would be ideal. But then you’re looking at a model with a starting price of about $110,000.

One of the hallmarks of Land Rover is the quality, fit and finish of the materials used. Bold horizontal and vertical lines grace the cabin with light and dark color choices supplying contrast as well as visual appeal.

Throughout the cabin you’ll find premium leather, real wood, and metal finishes — you won’t find cheap plastics anywhere. The front seats are very comfortable, supportive, and not once did I feel weary, even after multiple hours behind the wheel. The rear bench seat offers ideal space for three with sufficient head, shoulder, hip, and legroom. Add a third row and that space is best used by the youngsters in your family.

Standard interior equipment includes keyless entry and push-button start, a manually adjustable steering column, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, full power accessories, front map lights, front footwell lamps, and ambient lighting. Also available you’ll find heated front and rear seats, sport pedal covers, aluminum paddle shifters, side and rear sunshades, power seats and many more options.

Top Technology and Safety Features

I’ve become a fan of the Jaguar LandRover InControl Touch Pro telematics system, primarily for its ease of use. Move away from the base model and you’ll find a 10-inch touchscreen display with colorful graphics, navigation with WiFi hotspot, multiple USB ports, and related apps.

2017 Land Rover DiscoveryYou won’t get Apple CarPlay or Android Autos connectivity as JLR prefers to keep proprietary information to themselves. In any case the system understands voice commands, delivering fast results.

Land Rover offers three audio systems, including an in-house developed 10-speaker system. Beyond that, you have a choice of a pair of Meridian packages — a 380-watt, 10-speaker unit or an 825-watt, 14-speaker system with a subwoofer. HSE models get the standard Meridian system; HSE Luxury the upgraded system.

Neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has conducted crash tests on the 2017 Discovery as of publication. Given the cost of these vehicles, each entity may elect not to do so. Regardless, sizable SUVs routinely score very well.

That said, you’ll find a suite of airbags along with rollover sensing. The available Drive Package brings a driver condition monitor, blind spot monitor and reverse traffic detection, and intelligent speed limiter and traffic sign recognition. Opt for the Drive Pro Package and it adds adaptive cruise control with emergency braking as well as lane keep assist and lane departure warning.

On the Road

The Land Rover Discovery delivers the power, regardless of your engine choice. I’ve long enjoyed the supercharged 3.0-liter V6, available in a number of Jaguar and Land Rover products. The 3.0-liter turbo-diesel is another beastly engine, although it doesn’t deliver its full power up front like the gas engine.

Step on the accelerator and the Discovery turbo-diesel moves confidently forward with average power. Press hard on the pedal and this SUV unleashes its full performance potential, moving the near 5,000-pound Discovery with authority. Quite easily, you’ll quickly reach highway speed and go well beyond if you’re not careful. The Discovery stays poised and delivers a quiet and comfortable ride. When idling, you’ll find one of the quietest diesels anywhere — the trained ear will hear the unmistakable “clack clack” but it is a muted sound nonetheless.

2017 Land Rover Discovery

While its on-road composure is excellent, what the Discovery does off road should clinch the deal amongst luxury SUV shoppers. One of the “wonders” of this model is its $1,500 optional adjustable height (air) suspension, what provides an added measure of lift when you want it. Here, you’ll find a control panel inside the cabin making it possible to lift or drop the suspension. You can also lock the suspension in place, which is ideal when going off road — or you can allow it to switch its height seamlessly.

Land Rover provides customers with a choice of four-wheel drive systems based on a single- or two-speed transfer case. Choose the latter and you’ll enjoy improved control while climbing and descending hills, or when towing. An electronic center differential supplies a 50:50 front to rear axle split with a locking feature. For an added measure of control, the available active rear locking differential controls power between the left and right wheels on the rear axle.

Parting Thoughts

The 2017 Land Rover Discovery stands head and shoulders above the competition. Competing models include the Lexus GX 460, Audi Q7, and the Volvo XC90. Of the three, the Lexus offers the strongest off-road capabilities.

If you shop the 2017 Discovery, the two engines are evenly matched. So, starting with a gasoline HSE model is an ideal place to begin. That said, with popular options ordered, you may pay in the neighborhood of $65,000 to $70,000 for one — prices entirely within the range of what well-equipped models in this segment cost.

The 7 Greatest Top Gear Moments!

April 30, 2013 by Alexander Johnson Leave a Comment

There’s something epic about Top Gear. Absorbing a huge budget and sending three hapless English petrolheads around the world on increasingly ridiculous quests, the programme has been keeping its viewers extremely entertained since its relaunch in 2002. It’s a global phenomenon and should be recognised as such.

But through all the drama, the banter, the controversy, the speed, the explosions, the jokes, and the cars, this list represents the very best of Top Gear. It’s what has kept audiences thrilled for all these years, and what keeps us coming back for more. Here’s our take on the seven episodes we reckon make Top Gear the most popular TV show… in the world.

1. The Peel P50 in Television Centre

Top Gear: Peel P50 by Blogpaedia on FlickrIt might not have been the most spectacular but it certainly ranks among the most memorable. Jeremy Clarkson piloted the tiny Peel P50 – the world’s smallest production car – around the streets of London and into BBC Television Centre. Dwarfed by even a Mini Cooper, the Peel P50 was at home in the winding corridors of Britain’s iconic broadcasting hub.

Cars involved: Peel P50

Best bit: Clarkson’s accidental appearance on BBC News

2. Trying to Destroy a Toyota Hilux

It’s well-known that the Toyota Hilux is a robust piece of machinery. They’re popular with farmers, gamekeepers and, as Clarkson pointed out, the Taliban, for precisely this reason. The 90s shape remains one of the most instantly recognisable cars of modern times.

That wasn’t enough for Clarkson and company, however. They wanted to test whether its reputation was earned, and whether the Hilux really was indestructible. To do this they conducted a number of very ordinary scientific tests oh, you know leaving it on a beach while the tide was coming in, setting it on fire, dropping a caravan on it – but it was the final test that makes this episode one of the most brilliant.

The Toyota Hilux survived a huge block of flats being demolished beneath it. After falling to the ground it took only basic mechanical intervention before the engine roared into life – the Hilux in question remains on display in the Top Gear studio.

Cars involved: Toyota Hilux pickup

Best bit: The battered machine’s return to the studio, damaged but still rolling.

3. Driving the Then-new Land Rover Discovery up a Mountain

Looking back, this challenge was rather tame. Appearing alongside the Dodge Viper SRT10 and the Rinspeed Splash back in November 2004, the then-new Land Rover Discovery was a technological marvel. This episode showed Clarkson drive one to the top of Cnoc an Fhreiceadain (Scotland) against a musical backdrop of Holst’s Jupiter. Classic on every level.

Cars involved: Land Rover Discovery

Best bit: The summit

4. Driving to the North Pole

Top Gear has broken a lot of records (and other things) so it’s no real surprise that they were the first to drive to the North Pole. But you’d expect Jeremy Clarkson and James May cooped up in their car to have more hilarious fallings-out.

Instead, they tackled the challenge with a grace and competence not demonstrated in any Top Gear episode before or since. Sure, there were uncertain moments (they could hear the ice cracking beneath the car) and a few times when May clearly wished he was somewhere else (some quality time on the towbar-mounted lavatory seat while Clarkson had the keys was a questionable idea) but the boys were ultimately successful in their quest to drive to the North Pole.

Cars involved: Toyota Hilux ‘Invincible’

Best bit: The fact that Hammond was racing them on a dog sled

5. Crossing the Channel in Amphibious Cars

Top Gear: amphibious carThe boys had been given an amphibious car challenge before. Their task had been to cross a lake in home-made machines that could drive on the public road and also be used in water. Hammond’s ‘Dampervan’ – a bizarre Volkswagen-narrowboat hybrid – began to sink almost immediately and May’s sail-powered Triumph Herald was prone to drifting into reeds. Clarkson’s Toyboata had properly worked, only to be capsized during a moment of exuberance mere yards from the finish. May’s Triumph somehow triumphed.

This time, the boys took their task more seriously. May’s attempt was still rubbish and Hammond’s craft sank again, but after a number of attempts (and a run-in with the port police) the Toyboata prevailed. Clarkson, May and Hammond successfully ‘sailed’ from the old Hovercraft terminal in Kent to a beach somewhere in France – using a modified Hilux and an outboard motor.

Cars involved: Triumph Herald, Volkswagen Campervan, Toyota Hilux

Best bit: The boys arriving on a French beach in front of bemused locals

6. ‘Properly’ Testing the Ford Fiesta

Clarkson frequently laments the letters the programme receives, many of which ask for more sensible reviewing of ordinary cars. In the case of the famous Ford Fiesta test, he responded to one particular piece of correspondence with the proper review to end all proper reviews.

With the needs of the public in mind, Clarkson demonstrates the Fiesta’s prowess at outmanoeuvring baddies in a blacked-out Corvette during a chase through a shopping centre. He then goes on to prove its abilities as a landing craft during a military invasion exercise. Truly informative.

Cars involved: Ford Fiesta, Chevrolet Corvette

Best bit: Handbrake turn through British Home Stores

7. The Reliant Robin Spaceship

A truly spectacular piece of television, featuring all the elements that make Top Gear so great – ridiculousness, perseverance, enormous ambition and a truly gargantuan budget. This time, the boys had set their sights beyond the horizon – they wanted to build a space shuttle.

Choosing the Reliant Robin because it looks most like the NASA-built Shuttle, Clarkson, May and Hammond set to work on what would be one of the most spectacular Top Gear failures ever. The project was finished, the launch was set, the countdown began, the ship launched…

Everything appeared to be going smoothly until the Reliant failed to separate from the fuel tank. Rather than gliding gently to terra firma as predicted, the whole ‘spaceship’ crashed into the ground in an enormous fireball.

This episode epitomises the unofficial Top Gear mantra – ambitious, but rubbish.

Cars involved: Reliant Robin

Best bit: The explosion, obviously
