Spotlight: 23rd Annual Triangle British Classic Car Show

May 20, 2019 by admin 3 Comments

23rd Annual Triangle British Classic Car Show

Auto shows are held ‘year round, especially in warmer climates where cold and snow are not much of a factor. In the southeast, including the Carolinas, May begins a stretch of shows lasting into early fall. Thus, if you enjoy classic cars, then this is the season for you.

The 23rd Annual Triangle British Classic Car Show is one such event, held at North Hills in Raleigh on the third Saturday of May. The show is organized by the North Carolina MG Car Club.

This year’s show welcomed nearly 150 British-made vehicles. And despite hot temperatures, the spectators came out in droves.

The show’s organizers supplied clearly marked description signs,
not unlike what’s found at Concours-level events.

From Britain, With Love

British-centric car shows supply us with a rich history of automotive manufacturing. Like the U.S., the U.K. counts scores of defunct brands, including Austin-Healey, MG, Morris, and Reliant, just to name a few. Government-brokered mergers and financial backing helped keep the industry going, with most of the current brands now foreign-owned.

And yet, the connection between old new remains and not just with the right-hand steering wheels of manufacturer’s home market vehicles or with the uniquely British terms bonnet (hood) and boot (trunk) referenced by owners. Further, it doesn’t take a sharp eye to spot any era Jaguar, while most enthusiasts immediately recognize the differences between McLaren and Aston-Martin.

So, let’s celebrate the many classic British models by reviewing what was featured at this year’s show.

MG: Morris Garages

As expected, MG models dominated the event, with most of the models showcased from the 1950s through the 1970s. MG, which is derived from Morris Garages, has gone through a succession of owners since its founding in 1924. Today, the company is owned by China’s SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, which produces a variety of passenger vehicles for the global market, including the U.K. But these models are unrelated to the MG of antiquity.

The MG models popular with collectors fall largely under two groups: MGA (launched in 1955) and MGB (rolled out in 1962 through 1980). Though designed and built in the U.K. at the company’s factory in Abington-on-Thames, England, more than 90 percent of the MGA vehicles produced were shipped abroad. Similarly, the MGB series also found success overseas, especially in the U.S.

Jaguar Motors

Founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, Jaguar remains an important British manufacturer of cars and utility vehicles. Today, the marque represents one part of the Jaguar Land Rover enterprise, now owned by India’s Tata Motors.

A few Jaguars were on hand, including a 1961 Jaguar XK150 and a 1970 E-Type.

This one may already be in the hands of a new owner.

This Lotus example was the lone representation for the entire brand.

The Mini brand, now owned by BMW, was represented by four models,
with the current designs flanking the two classics.

Besides the British marques, the show made room for modified cars, including this three-wheeled conveyance.

Best of Show

The overall Best of Show award went to this 1936 Rolls-Royce 25/30 Saloon. It was the only RR offering on hand and clearly was a standout.

2014-2018 Jaguar F-Type Buyer’s Guide

December 5, 2018 by admin 5 Comments

You won’t find Jaguar calling the F-Type a tribute or spiritual successor model of the Jaguar E-Type, but in many ways it is.

Forty years after the earlier sports car was canceled, an all-new Jaguar F-Type model arrived in 2014. The F-Type has the long hood, rounded side body panels and the spheroid taillight touches of the earlier model, but beyond that Jaguar’s sports car is modern and ideally suited to take on such competitors as the BMW Z4, Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-Benz SLK Class.

Our Jaguar F-Type buying guide covers the first five years of this model’s run. Please use it if you’re shopping for a Jaguar F-Type.

Jaguar F-Type
The F-Type is Jaguar’s quintessential sports car.

A New Beginning

The 2014 Jaguar F-Type immediately served notice that a new British sports car not named McLaren or Lotus had arrived. But instead of a full frontal assault, Jaguar dipped its toes in the market, by presenting just one of the two expected body styles, and a convertible at that.

Further, Jaguar chose a conservative route with the F-Type’s powertrains and drivetrains, by holding off on the eventual manual transmission and all-wheel drive options expected.

But don’t think anything less of the 2014 Jaguar F-Type because of its modest debut. What you have is a stunningly handsome design marked by a large grille opening bordered by air intake chambers. Upwardly sloping headlamps with natty LED accent lights nearly complete the frontal presentation. Of course, we’d be remiss to forget the clamshell hood, a style which is also favored by such competitors as the Maserati Ghibli and Chevrolet Corvette.

A Matter of Design

Scan your eyes along the profile and the rounded panels dominate. Jaguar’s designers could have left well enough alone, but added an uninterrupted line that begins at the front of the car, crosses the front fender and door before fading away as it bends at the rear.

Jaguar F-Type
The evocative Jaguar F-Type’s profile view.

A second line flows from wheel to wheel, intersecting with a wheel vent before dipping as it bypasses the flush door handle. From the rear, the Jaguar’s haunch is marked by narrow wraparound tail lamps and dual exhaust tips centered within the rear diffuser.

Inside, cozy is the operative word. The seats, while comfortable and supportive, may not work for taller individuals. But they’re adjustable and that’s a saving grace for drivers who do fit inside. Attractively stitched leather, metallic accents and firm controls (which are ideally placed) underscore the attention to detail we expect. Never mind the stellar build quality inside and out.

Tech + Safety

Concerning technology matters, the Jaguar F-Type does a few things quite well. Beginning with the 2014 model, a 10-speaker audio system with a CD player, smartphone integration, a USB port, and an auxiliary jack are standard features. An 8-inch color touch-screen display is included. Optionally, Jaguar offers a 12-speaker audio package.

Various driver-assist features are available as part of an optional Vision Package. Here, you’ll find a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, reverse traffic detection along with front and rear parking aids. An available adaptive front lighting system improves night visibility while cornering. Automatic high beams is another option.

Jaguar F-Type
This Jaguar’s center console includes an integrated passenger grab bar.

The 2015 model returned without technology changes. For 2016, the F-Type has a new telematics and connectivity suite, including automated emergency calling and smartphone connectivity. However, shoppers should know that at no time through this model’s first five years has Jaguar offered Android Auto or Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. As for 2017, the technologies remain the same.

Beginning in 2018, the F-Type has a new infotainment system, which features a tablet-style screen for controlling audio, navigation and other functions. GoPro camera integration is also new, which includes an app for producing video. An available forward-facing camera works with the Jaguar’s emergency braking system to enhance automatic braking. Adaptive speed limiter, traffic sign recognition and driver condition monitor are also new this year. Parallel parking assist is available.

Under the Hood

Jaguar and Land Rover are joined at the hip, therefore the engines and transmissions they offer are shared between these two iconic British brands.

From the onset, this Jaguar has offered both a supercharged V6 engine displacing 3 liters and a supercharged 5.0-liter V8. The standard engine makes 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, except in “S” models where it makes 380 horsepower.

Jaguar F-Type
What’s under the hood of your Jaguar?

The V8 engines deliver a blistering 495 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Both engines work alongside an 8-speed automatic transmission with rev-matching and paddle shift controls.

All F-Type models have a brake-based torque vectoring system, which contributes to a more planted feel when taking sharp corners. Further, V6 rear-wheel-drive models have a mechanical limited-slip differential, while V8 models have an electronically controlled version. Jaguar also includes a drive mode selector, which supplies switch-operated control under a variety of conditions, including rain, ice, and snow for better grip. On dry roads, the system adjusts transmission shifts and engine RPMs.

Charting the Performance Changes

Jaguar never hesitates to make changes to its halo F-Type sports car. Each subsequent model year seems to build on the previous one with those changes going beyond a simple update.

For its first year, the F-Type was available as a convertible only and in base, S, and V8 S trims.

For 2015, the coupe joined the ranks. It can be found in S and R editions, the latter sharing the same supercharged V8 found in the coupe, but with its performance kicked up to 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. As before, all engines work with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Jaguar F-Type
A pronounced hump and quad tip exhaust tips.

All-Wheel Drive and a Manual Gearbox

Beginning in 2016, the F-Type received what some enthusiasts had long wanted: a six-speed manual gearbox. This manual delivers the quick shifts you’d expect in a sports car.

Also new this year is optional all-wheel drive. The automatic transmission is your singular choice here. Other changes include the discontinuation of the V8 S model and the introduction of electric power steering, which replaces the previous hydraulic system.

The changes for 2017 include the addition of two new trims. A new base model kicks things off, while an SVR trim is the new range-topper. In between, you’ll find Premium, S and R trims.

The SVR keeps the supercharged V8, but it also receives an exclusive bump in performance to 575 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Moreover, the SVR features a specially tuned suspension, wider tires and wheels, and an optional carbon-fiber roof and carbon-ceramic brakes.

2018 Jaguar F-Type 400.
2018 Jaguar F-Type 400.

For its fifth year, the 2018 Jaguar F-Type gains a third engine. This one is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with an output of 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar pairs this rear-wheel-drive-only model with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine is the new fuel efficiency leader as it makes an EPA-estimated 23/30 mpg city/highway. Compare that with the V6 at 20/28 and the V8 at 15/24 and the difference are certainly noteworthy.

Also new for 2018 is a special “400 Sport” edition, which raises the V6’s performance to 400 horsepower. Lastly, Jaguar discontinued the S trim and rolled out an R Dynamic trim to replace it.

Jaguar F-Type Shopping

If you have your heart set on Jaguar’s sports car, you’re not alone. Some models, however, are much more difficult to find than others, especially those equipped with the manual transmission. Package options can affect pricing considerably, especially on the SVR trim.

All in all, the Jaguar F-Type is the type of sports car we expect from this British marque.

Luxury Elevated: Range Rover Velar

February 27, 2018 by admin 5 Comments

Velar brings unparalleled luxury to the Range Rover line.

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar
2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar in R-Dynamic trim.

Land Rover continues to make a name for itself, seemingly more so these days with its Range Rover line versus its Discovery range. That’s due mostly to an all-new Range Rover Velar model that simply rewrites the definition of what a luxury SUV is all about.

The 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar burst onto the scene last summer, a model built on the same platform underpinning the all-new Jaguar F-Pace SUV. Yes, Jaguar and LandRover are one, but for this model, Jaguar took the lead and Land Rover followed. The duo shares a similar suspension, the same engines and an identical platform architecture, but the sheet metal is unique to each.

2018 Range Rover Velar Prices, Packages and Options

The 2018 Range Rover Velar is available in six grades: Velar ($49,900), Velar S ($54,700), Velar SE ($67,400), R-Dynamic SE ($60,100), R-Dynamic HSE ($67,600) and Velar First Edition ($89,300). Add $995 for the destination charge.

My test model was a 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic HSE with a base price of $77,100. That’s because it had one of six metallic paint choices (in this case, Byron Blue) adding $610 to the price. Two standard colors are included and then there are three additional metallic paints that cost $1,525 each.

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

Also adding to the price is an R-Dynamic Black Package ($635, with Narvik Black paint treatment on the hood vent blade, grille mesh and surround, fender blades and exhaust finishers), perforated Windsor leather seats ($4,575, with light oyster and ebony trim), light oyster suede cloth headlining ($920), a 1,600-watt Meridian sound system ($3,060) and a head-up display ($970).

When using Land Rover’s online price configurator to build a sample model, I wasn’t able to match the base price on the Monroney, so I figured some items were simply included in the price. Beyond what I already mentioned, my test Velar had an active locking rear differential ($1,125), satellite and HD Radio ($615), four-zone climate control ($870), an Interior Premium Textile Package ($715) and an On/Off Road Package ($580, with terrain response control and configurable dynamics), and other features.

The final price was $86,190, but it could just as easily have retailed for thousands more. Indeed, the Velar First Edition model with diamond turned finish wheels ($3,775) and Oxford Road Paint ($8,580) puts this model in six-figure territory. Fortunately, you can find a well-equipped Velar for under $75,000.

Velar Exterior Design and Highlights

As for the model at hand, the Velar is one of the most stunning vehicles ever to sport the Range Rover name. Certainly, the Evoque has the more flamboyant body style, but the Velar earns its own design plaudits, largely by retaining the brand’s captivating appearance, while opting for more rounded edges.

It represents a design distinction that marries traditional Range Rover looks with a thoroughly modern appearance — and it works. In the Velar, handles remain flush with the door until needed, emerging fully from the canvas and staying erect until the driver pulls away. Very little chrome is apparent, with the upscale look resting on its curved canvas.

Standard features include automatic headlights, front and rear LED lights, rear fog lights, 18-inch 15-spoke wheels, a sliding panoramic roof, a power liftgate and a spoiler. There are numerous upgrades available, including wheel sizes and design choices, a heated windshield, roof rails, blacked-out touches and power-folding side mirrors with approach lights.

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

Velar Interior Design and Highlights

Inside, the cabin “brings it” to the segment by taking the opposite approach: it is first-rate as well as first class. Leather liberally covers most surfaces, including the upper and lower dashboard, the seats and the steering wheel. Suede covers nearly everything else — running up the roof pillars and covering the ceiling itself.

But it just may be the available advanced materials that set this vehicle apart. Indeed, my weekly driver included the perforated Windsor leather and added what Land Rover calls “Premium Textile” to the lower dashboard, door inlays, center console and other surfaces. The look is stunning, the feel is unusual, but entirely appropriate. Add in aluminum and other metallic touches, and the interior stuns and amazes.

One of my favorite features was the dual 10-inch center console screen known officially as the Land Rover InControl infotainment system — Touch Pro Duo. With the ignition on, the top screen lights up and then tilts forward. The bottom screen, depending on the setting chosen, features an outline of the Velar or the seats, supplying touchscreen control of many key systems. Gone are switches and knobs, replaced by touch control. That said, the system requires a fair amount of time to learn. You might discover surprising features such as massage function, uncovered by my son as he played with the controls while I concentrated on my drive.

The Velar is a five-seater with an optional two-seat third row or jump seat. Our test model didn’t include the extra row, but that was fine with me as this SUV offers 70.1 cubic feet of standard cargo space. Yes, the Velar is beyond roomy in terms of storage — it easily swallows up a week’s worth of luggage for five.

There are no penalty seats in the Velar’s cabin, which means that five may sit in comfort. Of course, the best seats in the house are up front, where wonderful support, heated and ventilated seats, and a massaging function awaits. The driver has a commanding view of the road and the front passenger is bedazzled by the beautiful touch points throughout.

Standard features include keyless entry with push-button start, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, 10-way power front seats and zoned climate control. Available features include rear seat remote release levers, a heated steering wheel, 20-way seats, a lockable cooled glove box, cargo space divider rails and configurable ambient lighting.

2018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

Tech Features and Options

The standard eight-speaker audio system is found only in the base model. All other Velars have one of several available Meridian packages with 11, 17 and even 23 speakers available. As you might imagine sound quality only gets better as you choose among the systems. That said, you may find the 11-speaker Meridian audio system delivers what you want — it is that special.

Other tech features include Land Rover’s proprietary connectivity system, satellite radio, HD Radio, USB ports and navigation. Driver assistance features include standard cruise control with speed limiter and lane departure warning. Available tech includes adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitor, lane keep assist, reverse traffic detection, parking sonars and a parking aid.

Three Velar Engine Choices

2018 Land Rover Range Rover VelarYou expect performance under the hood of every Range Rover and in the 2018 Velar, you won’t be disappointed. That said, you’ll find a pair of 2.0-liter turbo engines for your consideration — one for gasoline, the other for diesel. These two Ingenium engines power several Jaguar models and, like the available supercharged V6, they’re paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

I can’t comment on the workings of the smaller engines in the Velar as the supercharged V6 powered my test model. This engine makes 380 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, delivering generous off-the-mark acceleration and passing power. What helps matters is the adjustable suspension — set it low when traveling on the highway for improved handling or set it high when taking this beauty off-road.

The Velar’s electric-powered steering doesn’t supply the connected feel you find in similar Jaguar models, but then this is an SUV, not a sports sedan or an F-Type. The ride is comfortable, although be careful with your wheel choices — the sweet spot here may be the 20-inch wheels.

Parting Thoughts: 2018

There is a feeling I get every time I review a Land Rover product and that is a sense of inadequacy. No, not because of knowing that I’m out of my league as far as buying one, rather as far as describing one.

You see, just as you think you’re taking a deep dive with this product, you realize that there are numerous fabric options, tech choices and seating options not mentioned. Even describing every sensory experience is sometimes hard to convey, such as the feel of the textile on door inlays, the look of the center console, even the smell of the cabin. Land Rover works diligently to design and build every one of its models and looks for different ways to surprise, even delight shoppers.

Not having tested the Velar with the smaller engines, I cannot offer my opinion on either. What I can say is the V6 is wholly suited for this model. As for choosing your trim, moving away from the base trim substitutes real leather for imitation leather and opens up a world of upgrade possibilities that is certain to please the most ardent Range Rover aficionados.

To the Manor Born: Range Rover Sport

July 18, 2017 by admin 3 Comments

Out and about with No. 2 of four models in the Range Rover collection.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport offers five powertrain choices, including diesel.

The Land Rover universe now encompasses six models — four Range Rovers and two Discovery series. There’s considerable overlap between some models, but there is enough distinctiveness present that each one has its own unique attributes, including the 2017 Range Rover Sport.

A 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport was a recent weekly driver, the second generation of this luxury SUV. Now in its fourth model year, the current-generation Range Rover Sport continues to hold its own in a highly competitive segment, delivering what customers want across five grades: SE ($65,650), HSE ($80,150), Supercharged ($80,650), Autobiography ($94,450) and SVR ($111,350). Add $995 for the destination charge.

Yes, that’s a huge spread between models, but if you’re happy with either a supercharged V6 or the turbo-diesel V6, you can hold your final price below $80,000.

New for 2017 are a host of now standard safety features, including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, and automatic emergency braking. The electronics system is now controlled by the Range Rover Sport’s 10.2-inch touchscreen.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Exterior Overview

Land Rover calls the Range Rover Sport a compact model, but it is anything but that. Indeed, its proportions align with median-sized models such as the Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class (formerly ML-Class). On the other hand, the Range Rover Evoque is definitely the “small time” player in this segment.

What you do have here is a sleek canvas marked by curved corners and peppered by sharp creases, distinctive sculpting, and vent embellishments. A high profile, strong shoulders, and a dramatically canted windshield are among the special features of note.

Standard exterior features include Xenon headlights with LED signature lights, automatic headlights, rear fog lights, and power-heated side folding mirrors with approach lights. Also available are front fog lights.

Wheel choices include 19- and 20-inch split-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels. An assortment of color options with contrasting roofs or a panoramic roof rounds out the exterior features.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Interior Highlights

2017 Land Rover Range RoverGive the Range Rover Sport much credit with providing a roomy interior. Its standard 2+3 seating offers excellent room all around.

You have the option of adding a third-row seat for two, but at great compromise to storage space and seating comfort for third-row passengers.

Opt for the third-row package ($2,750) and Land Rover throws in power control, a tire repair system, and 20-inch, five-spoke wheels.

The Range Rover’s cabin is expansive, bright, and elegantly appointed. High-end materials blanket the cabin — I couldn’t find one square inch of plastic.

Leather, wood, and chrome trim grace the interior. All switches, knobs, and buttons seem durable.

The front seats are plush and supportive; the rear 60:40 bench seat is comfortable, but not nearly as so as in the big Range Rover. Still, the cabin is exquisitely dressed, befitting a model of Range Rover stature.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

On the Road

Drive a 2017 Range Rover Sport and you have your choice of five engines. Well, not exactly. Two of the engines do double duty with enhanced computer programming squeezing out more horsepower or horsepower and torque. That said, our specifications table at the end of this article shows five engines.

The base engine is a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 generating 340 horsepower (380 available) and 332 pound-feet of torque. This engine powered my test model and is wholly sufficient for the Sport. Even so, the Land Rover Discovery I tested last month had the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with a whopping 443 pound-feet of torque. But if full-on power is your desire, then nothing short of the V8s making at least 500 horsepower will do. Each engine choice comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Superchargers provide superior off-the-mark acceleration compared to turbochargers, with the latter offering more boost further up the band curve. Jaguar Land Rover splits the technology by assigning turbos to diesel engines (and four-cylinder gas models) and superchargers to V6 and V8 gas engines. Either way, you win as there almost always is ample power from the smallest to the largest engine.

The Range Rover Sport seems too pretty to take off road, but if you’re so inclined, simply raise the suspension by 2.5 inches and give it a go. You’ll keep up with most everything out there, except perhaps that rock-crawling Jeep Wrangler. However, unlike the Wrangler, the Range Rover Sport supplies an absolutely comfortable on-road experience with a plush suspension and decent cornering thanks to its four-wheel drive system.

On one six-mile stretch of curvilinear pavement, I was able to experience just how well this SUV handles — it hugs the outside of the road with precision with very little body roll noted. This SUV imbues driver confidence in an all together stylish package.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Safety and Technology Features

It is common matter that luxury cars, especially SUVs, are not put through the same crash test evaluations of more mainstream models.

The cost of destroying pricey vehicles is the main inhibitor of conducting such tests, therefore neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has tested the Range Rover Sport.

SUVs as a rule perform better than cars in crash tests, thanks in large part to two factors: size and weight. Regardless, there is an inherent weakness present. Namely, a higher risk of tipping over. Roll stability control is an effective mitigator and the Range Rover Sport has this technology built in.

Other standard safety features include a suite of airbags, stability and traction control, and anti-lock brakes. This equipment is common to all cars, nonetheless.

If you want such driver assist features as adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, lane keep assist, and blind spot assist with reverse traffic detection, the Drive Pro Package is a $2,500 option on base models.

As for technologies, you get everything expected in a luxury SUV. That said, a surround view camera system comes bundled with configurable mood lighting and soft door close to form a $1,400 vision and convenience package. Other upgrades bring in an eight-inch rear entertainment system ($2,000), head-up display ($1,300), and an 18-speaker, 825-watt Meridian Surround Sound System ($1,100).

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Parting Thoughts

With the Velar now part of the Range Rover collection, shoppers have much to consider when shopping Land Rover. The latest Range Rover entry is just two inches shorter than the Sport, but it starts off with a turbo four-cylinder gas or diesel engine and tops out with a 380-horsepower supercharged V6. Definitely, if you place an importance on performance, the Sport gets the nod.

As for the Range Rover Sport, it does everything you expect in a five-passenger luxury SUV. If you need a seven-seater, then only the series-topping Range Rover will do, but its near $86,000 base price means a considerable cash outlay is in order.

Driven: 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport

April 24, 2017 by admin 3 Comments

An attainable luxury model from Britain’s iconic SUV maker.

2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport.
2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Consider the Discovery Sport your cost-effective Land Rover, the SUV you’ll want until you can afford a Range Rover. This five-passenger, all-wheel-drive utility vehicle starts at under $40,000 and delivers a handsome product in an altogether tidy package.

When you think of “Land Rover” there is a pair of sub-brands or categories that may come to mind. The standard Discovery series includes two models: Discovery Sport and Discovery. The high-end Range Rover line now includes four models: Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, and Evoque.

Even some of these models offer further differentiation with the flagship Range Rover presented in short- and long-wheelbase models. The Evoque is the outlier here, offered in two- and four-door body styles as well as a convertible.

2017 Discovery Sport: Charting the Changes

The Discovery Sport was new as of 2015, replacing the previous Freelander, itself was originally known as the LR2. Changes for 2017 include an all-new InControl interface, featuring a larger screen, sharper graphics, and quicker response times.

You’ll also find a newly available Intelligent Dynamics pack, what brings in an adaptive suspension system and an active all-wheel-drive system that sends power to two wheels for improved fuel economy.

2017 Land Rover Discovery SportThe Discovery Sport features Land Rover’s recognizable honeycomb, two-slat horizontal grille. Positioned directly above the grille are the letters forming the word Discovery — the only indication that this model is the Discovery Sport is on the liftgate. Specifically, the SPORT badging fastened to the left of the rear license plate supplies the requisite cue.

Circular-themed headlights and tail lamps mark this model. Moreover, you’ll also find a narrow lower air intake, front and rear skid plates, front fog lamps, pronounced wheel wells, side vents, a rising beltline, and a sweeping roofline. A liftgate spoiler, rear fog lights, and dual exhaust tips bring up the rear. Also included are alloy wheels, power-folding heated side mirrors, and daytime running lights.

Inside, there is room for five, although this SUV is most suitable for four. The front bucket seats are comfortable and supportive; the rear bench seat features a 40:20:40 design — drop that center seat to access the storage compartment or use the armrest for just the two of you back there.

Speaking of the storage compartment, it measures 32 cubic feet or 66.9 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. Optionally, you can choose three-row seating, what brings in two extra seats for the little ones. However, this choice also greatly reduces the amount of standard cargo area space available. If you need seven seats, consider the Discovery.

Three Grades to Consider

The 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport is available in three trims: SE ($37,695), HSE ($42,195), and HSE Luxury ($46,595). Add $995 for the destination charge.

Standard equipment includes eight-way partial leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a center console with a sliding armrest, dual-zone climate control, a 10-speaker audio system, mood lighting, cruise control, a rear parking aid, and a rearview camera.

Upgrades and options are many and include Xenon headlights with LED signature, larger wheels, grained leather seats, a navigation system, and a 10-speaker Meridian sound system. A fixed panoramic roof and a powered gesture tailgate are also available.

2017 Land Rover Discovery SportThe Discovery Sport’s cabin is airy and bright, and features high-quality materials and the precise fit and finish you’d expect of it.

The instrument panel has a pair of oval recesses at each corner featuring the speedometer and odometer. In the middle is a digital display.

The center stack comes with a colorful rectangular display, climate vents, and the knobs and switches to control the climate system. At the base of the stack is an open area for your smartphone. You’ll find all types of connectivity ports — USB 3.0, auxiliary, and 12-volt outlets inside the console.

The transmission shifter is a dial and the top sits flush with the surface when the engine is off, emerging once the ignition is on. However, this particular dial may be the SUV’s weakest point. Not a few times did it refuse to budge at first attempt and it doesn’t have the smoothness you’d expect. I don’t mind dials, as long as they work as intended, but give me a transmission shift stick anytime.

Front and rear cup holders and in-door beverage holders assure you that you’re never without a drink when properly stocked. One of the strongest points of this SUV is the standard storage area — it rivals the size of other small SUVs in roominess. Drop the second-row seats and you have even more space to work with, although those seats don’t quite rest flush with the floor. Happily, there is a spare underneath the storage area — a donut, but at least a spare is present.

One Powertrain Combination

You get one and only one powertrain choice with the Discovery Sport — a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine makes 240 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. This engine comes paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Step on the pedal and the Discovery Sport moves forward in a leisurely manner. But it isn’t too far up in the band curve — 1,750 RPM to be precise — when the turbocharger kicks in.

2017 Land Rover Discovery SportForce the pedal hard and you’ll note the lag — power seems long in coming, but when it does, this SUV throws it down.

Passing power is ample and when you move down your favorite curvy road, the SUV remains poised. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t some body-roll present, but it is minimal and not unexpected.

Personally, I would love to see a second engine offered. Specifically, the 2.0-liter “Ingenium” turbo-diesel first presented in the Jaguar XF followed by the XE would be terrific. In addition to serving the Discovery Sport, the Jaguar F-PACE might also benefit.

In the XF, the turbo-diesel makes 180 horsepower and 318 pound-feet of torque. Most impressive is the 42 mpg highway the diesel delivers. That’s far better than the 20/25 mpg city/highway you’ll get with the gas engine.

As for off-road capabilities, the Discovery Sport comes with an All-Terrain Progress Control system, what delivers automatic cruise-control for off-road driving. This means you’ll release your foot from the gas pedal and allow the SUV to move forward on its own. The system allows you to control your speed too, supplying “crawl control” as needed. Thus, when activated, the SUV can travel at speeds ranging from 1 to 19 mph.

Safety and Technology

The 2017 Discovery Sport comes equipped with a full suite of airbags, including a driver’s knee bolster airbag. Traction and stability control, hill start assist, and trailer stability assist are standard.

This model is not yet rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That said, high-profile vehicles such as SUVs typically offer superior crash protection, although an elevated risk of a rollover is common to these vehicles.

As for tech items, upgrading to a 380-watt, 11-speaker Meridian sound system with a subwoofer ($800) is one option. This package also brings in satellite radio and HD radio. Navigation is available and comes with apps. Also included with all models is a USB port up front and two in the rear. An available entertainment pack ($3,000) brings in an 825-watt, 16-speaker Meridian audio system.

2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport

Parting Thoughts

The Land Rover Discovery Sport provides an ideal segue to this British SUV brand. Upgrade your Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson or other small SUV and you’ll come away with a luxurious utility vehicle with strong off-road capabilities to boot. That’s something no small mainstream SUV offers outside of a Jeep Compass or a Subaru Forester.

Even as you weigh this Land Rover, the luxury competition is strong. Compare this model with the Cadillac XT5, Audi Q5, Lincoln MKC, BMW X5, Lexus NX, Infiniti QX50, and others.

All in all, the 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport delivers as promised. That said, if you want a larger engine or more room, then cross-shop the all-new and larger Discovery.

Luxury Fervor: 2017 Jaguar XE

September 21, 2016 by admin 4 Comments

2017 Jaguar XE

If you don’t yet have Jaguar on your luxury vehicle shopping list yet, it is time to include it. Once considered an afterthought in the luxury segment, this distinctly British brand has made a name for itself. A string of new models, including the Jaguar XE, have effectively turned this marque around.

A 2017 Jaguar XE was a recent weekly driver, a compact luxury sedan with none other than the BMW 3 Series in its crosshairs. Certainly, Jaguar has fielded a small sedan in the past, but that X-Type model simply wasn’t up to the competition. That’s all changed now as the new XE follows a carefully laid-out path taken by more recently updated or new models, including the midsize XF sedan, the F-Type sports car, as well as the first-ever Jaguar F-Pace SUV.

Jaguar offers the 2017 XE in four trims: XE (Base) ($34,900), XE Premium ($37,500), XE Prestige ($41,400), and XE R-Sport ($46,500). Rear-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is available. You’ll have a choice of a pair of forced-induction gasoline engines and one turbo-diesel. Yes, Jaguar’s XE lineup is broad, the better to reach affluent customers.

2017 Jaguar XE

Exterior Highlights

Reduce the midsize XF to compact proportions and you have the XE. Or something very close to that.

This model features Jaguar’s recognizable gaping maw and now familiar sleek headlamp assemblies. The lower grille opening is offset by a pair of very large openings accented by fog lamps. Distinctive creasing across the hood gives this model a look that is at once powerful and elegant.

A high belt line and a sweeping roof line mark the XE’s profile. Vent ports are present and Jaguar offers a variety of wheel choices, including 20-inch forged alloy wheels. The haunch-like rear quarter includes a trunk lip spoiler, oversized wraparound combination lights, and dual-exhaust tips.

Interior Highlights

Most people correctly laud Jaguar for its clean, upscale interiors. Seating five, you’ll find very comfortable seats up front and a supportive bench seat in the rear. The back seat offers room for three, is best used for two, but if you’re tall you’ll want the front passenger seat as legroom is confining. But that’s typical for vehicles in this class, which is why taking a look at the larger Jaguar XF makes sense if you place a premium on rear seat space.

The deep center console gives the XE a cockpit feel, effectively swaddling the front passengers. You’ll find fine-grain leathers and such details as contrasting twin-needle stitching for a custom-made look. Jaguar also provides a selection of gloss black, textured aluminum, and contemporary wood veneers, along with ambient lighting in up to 10 colors.

2017 Jaguar XE

Standard equipment goes beyond the expected power accessories to include door sill finishers, zoned climate control and a power-operated moonroof. XE Premium models bring in a folding 40-20-40 rear bench seat along with driver and front passenger seat memory. The XE Prestige offers Taurus leather seats with contrast stitching, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. A power-adjusted steering column is included as well.

The top-of-the-line R-Sport features a distinctive interior. Here, you’ll find a branded soft grain leather steering wheel, etched aluminum veneer, and four exclusive trims. Standalone options available include a heated windshield.

You’ll also find a sizable trunk measuring 16.06 cubic feet. That’s large for this class. In all but the base model, you can lower the all or part of the 60-40 bench seat to expand your cargo carrying space. Also present is a pass-through to the trunk.

Key Technology Features

Numerous technology features accompany the 2017 XE, including an available head-up display featuring speed and navigation instructions.

The heart and soul of the Jaguar XE, however, is the InControl Touch system with its eight-inch capacitive touchscreen. Choose the Pro version and you’ll access a 10.2-inch screen. The system is clear and easy to use and supports audio streaming, Bluetooth, and USB connectivity. A suite of apps allows for easy integration of smartphones as well as remote access. WiFi is available.

At the same time, the Jaguar suite doesn’t permit Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility. Instead, you’ll have to use Jaguar’s proprietary system.

2017 Jaguar XE

Model Safety Overview

As of publication, crash testing has yet to be conducted on the 2017 XE. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will eventually test and score this model.

That said, the Jaguar XE has multiple safety or driver assist features that go well beyond the full complement of airbags, traction and stability control, and antilock brakes. All models are equipped with “all surface progress control” what works as low-speed cruise control (between 2 and 19 mph). It is designed to control braking and traction in slippery conditions.

You’ll also find that the XE offers available adaptive cruise control, closing vehicle sensing, blind spot monitoring, semi-automated parallel and perpendicular parking, and reverse traffic detection. The higher up the trim, the more likely you’ll find these features included.

On the Road

By offering three engine choices, Jaguar immediately signaled it is serious about serving the segment. All three engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Sorry, no manual transmission is offered.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine is standard, making 240 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar assigns a 25t nomenclature to this engine, which is standard on the XE, XE Premium, and XE Prestige. This engine is found on rear-wheel drive models only and makes an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Also available is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel making 180 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Carrying a 20d designation, this engine is also a mileage maker, coming in at 32 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway (30/40 with AWD).

Available in all trims except for the base model is a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine (35t) making 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Powerful as well as efficient, rear-wheel drive versions make an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway (20/29 with AWD).

2017 Jaguar XE

Our test model was powered by the supercharged engine and equipped with all-wheel drive. In particular, this combination will definitely appeal to people requiring optimum performance, although we would have been satisfied with rear-wheel drive only.

The supercharged V6 offers excellent off-the-start acceleration and superior passing power. The ZF-supplied eight-speed automatic is well matched, with sufficiently spaced gears and paddle shifters for drivers preferring to control shifts.

From a full stop, you’ll reach 60 mph in five seconds. The compact Jaguar is lithe, athletic and poised, with ride quality equalling the best models in this class.

Benefiting this model enormously is its lightweight aluminum architecture — in particular the double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension working in tandem with the electric steering to deliver driving dynamics you’ll quickly cherish.

JaguarDrive Control adds a layer of driving dynamics allowing you to select normal, eco, dynamic or rain/ice/snow modes — steering inputs and throttle mapping are affected with dynamic mode, adding weight to the steering.

2017 Jaguar XE

Parting Thoughts

It didn’t take long for me to realize the Jaguar XE has successfully cracked the top-tier amongst compact sedans. Most definitely it makes for a strong competitor to the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class as well as the Cadillac ATS. Furthermore, it is head and shoulders above the Lexus IS and Infiniti Q50, and easily a much better vehicle than the Acura ILX, Volvo S60, and the Lincoln MKZ.

Without multiple vehicles to test, we can’t offer comment on the other engine choices, although the performance numbers on the gas engine are quite good, while the diesel offers exceptional fuel economy. With Audi currently not offering diesels, Jaguar can target those customers too.

In all, we think any model above the base XE trim supplies a well-equipped entry-level sedan for under $40,000, an important price point in this segment. And for those who prefer an extra measure of utility, the all-new F-PACE SUV provides yet another reason for luxury shoppers to consider the Jaguar brand.

May Sales Tumble, But the End is Not Near

June 2, 2016 by admin Leave a Comment

Sales setback is temporary with some surprises thrown in.

US auto sales fell by 6.1 percent last month, but the end is hardly near. Instead, the industry counted two fewer selling days for May, accounting for much of the loss for the month.

2015 Ford F-150

Ford F-150 sales rose in by 9 percent in May.

US Manufacturers: Only FCA Rises

As expected, Fiat Chrysler sales rose by 1.1 percent, largely on the strength of its Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivan models. Jeep was another positive spot and was the only Fiat Chrysler brand other than Alfa Romeo to post gains for the month.

Some manufacturers such as GM posted larger losses than expected. GM sales fell by 18 percent, while Ford’s drop of 6.1 percent matched the industry’s average. GM blamed much of its decline to a reduction in fleet sales.

Had Ford maintained its sales from last month, it would have topped GM. Instead, it closed the gap to about 5,700 units, while remaining ahead of Toyota. The bright spot for Ford was once again its line of F-Series trucks. In May, Ford sold 67,412 units, up 9 percent for the month.

Hyundai Records a Strong May

Every major manufacturer outside of FCA posted losses last month, but there was a noticeable exception from the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group — Hyundai sales rose by a robust 11.6 percent; Kia sales edged up by 0.8 percent.

“Our refreshed CUV lineup continues to exhibit strength in this market,” said Derrick Hatami, vice president of national sales for Hyundai Motor America.

2016 Subaru Forester

Forester and Outback sales continue to pace Subaru.

As for the Big 3 Japanese manufacturers, Toyota sales fell by 9.6 percent, Nissan dipped by 1 percent, and Honda sales were off by 4.8 percent. But there were some bright spots here too — Scion sales rose by 38.6 percent as Toyota continues to wind down its youth brand. Infiniti sales were also up, climbing by 3.4 percent.

BMW Group sales fell by 8.7 percent, Daimler was off by 1.9 percent, while Audi sales rose by 1.6 percent. Volkswagen Group sales fell by 9.5 percent, dragged down by Volkswagen’s 17.2 percent plunge.

Jaguar Propels JLR

Jaguar, with two new products to offer, enjoyed a 79.7 percent increase for the month. Meanwhile, Land Rover sales fell by 8 percent. Thus, JLR sales rose by 8 percent based on Jaguar’s strong month.

“We are very pleased that through five months of the year, we have increased our business for both Jaguar and Land Rover brands,” said Joe Eberhardt, President and CEO, Jaguar Land Rover, North America, LLC. “The Land Rover brand continues its momentum from a record setting 2015, and Jaguar has taken off with the expansion of the Jaguar brand into two dynamic new segments with the Jaguar XE and F-PACE which are now on sale.”

Subaru Breaks a Record…Again

While FCA now has 74 consecutive months of month-over-month gains to its credit, Subaru is not too far behind with a 54-month streak of its own in place. Last month, Subaru had its best May ever, with sales topping 50,000 units. Its Forester and Outback models helped this niche automaker realize a 1.1 percent gain for the month.

And not to be overlooked is Volvo. The Swedish automaker is enjoying a strong rebound this year, largely based on its all-new XC90 crossover utility vehicle. Volvo sales rose by 10.2 percent in May.

“Our refreshed CUV lineup continues to exhibit strength in this market,” said Derrick Hatami, vice president of national sales for Hyundai Motor America.

2015 Hyundai Santa Fe

Crossover sales, including this Santa Fe, lifted Hyundai sales.

“With 10 percent growth for May while the overall industry is down, and now eleven months of double digit sales growth, it is a true testament to the transformation of Volvo in the US,” said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO, Volvo Car USA.

Mazda sales fell by 4.3 percent, Mitsubishi sales were off by 5.7 percent, and Tesla sales rose an estimated 55.3 percent according to Autodata Corp.

SAAR Still Strong

Despite the sales drop, the all-important SAAR remains strong. SAAR or the Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate takes into account fluctuations, such as a sales calendar with two fewer selling days. For May, the SAAR remains above 17 million units.

Sales data per Automotive News and the car manufacturers.

New Arrival: 2017 Jaguar F-PACE

June 1, 2016 by admin 3 Comments

Jaguar’s five-model product line now includes its first-ever SUV.

Jaguar F-PACE
The all-new Jaguar F-Pace SUV.

Two new Jaguar vehicles are rolling into showrooms across the country, updating the face of this quintessential British motor car manufacturer.

Although building a compact Jaguar sedan is nothing new in the 2017 XE, it is the 2017 F-PACE SUV that will take the marque in a fresh direction. Indeed, throughout Jaguar’s storied history, no utility vehicle model has ever been built. Until now.

Jaguar, But Not a Land Rover

Jaguar and Land Rover are fastened at the hip, but the 2017 F-PACE lays claim to being a Jaguar through and through. Doubtless, Land Rover engineers provided some assistance, although the platform also underpins the Jaguar XE and the midsize XF sedans.

Jaguar hopes the compact F-PACE does for it what the Cayenne has done for Porsche. If it succeeds in that endeavor, we’ll likely see at least one followup model.

Speaking of the German sports car manufacturer, the Porsche Macan is one of the F-PACE’s main competitors. Other models to consider include the Lexus NX, Cadillac XT5, Audi A5, Lincoln MKC, BMW X4, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class.

Rolling Into Showrooms

As the 2017 F-PACE arrives in showrooms there are several things to consider, including:

The F-PACE is standard all-wheel drive. Most of the 2017 F-PACE’s competitors offer standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. Meanwhile, Jaguar offers standard all-wheel drive based on the SUV’s rear-wheel drive architecture.

There are six models to choose from. Priced from $40,990 for the standard F-PACE, the remaining five models are: Premium ($44,200); Prestige ($48,700); R-Sport ($53,900); S ($56,700); and First Edition ($69,700). That’s a broad price range for this model, but it isn’t far removed from how Jaguar markets its other vehicles.

Diesel does it, although not initially. A number of manufacturers have been running in the opposite direction ever since Volkswagen’s diesel scandal effectively slammed oil burners. However, the initial rollout is composed of First Edition, 35T Premium, and 35T R-Sport models, each powered by a 340-horsepower, supercharged V-6 engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. A 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder diesel follows this fall, making 180 horsepower and is also mated to the 8-speed.

Fuel economy matters. The gasoline engine is EPA-rated at 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for a combined 20 mpg. Jaguar could have chosen a more efficient option, but then there is the brand’s name to uphold. Diesel numbers haven’t been released yet, but the European-spec model gets a combined 40 mpg. Don’t clap your hands with glee, yet — the US numbers will come in much less, perhaps significantly so.

Elegance meets sportiness. You want an elegant SUV, because that’s what you expect to find in the luxury segment. At the same time, sportiness must have a place, because this model is, after all, a Jaguar. You won’t find a dilemma here as premium materials are used throughout the cabin, including supple leather. As for the instrument panel and center console, you’ll also find a sporty look that isn’t too far removed from the Jaguar F-TYPE.

Passenger space and utility. The 2017 F-PACE seats five in keeping with the competition. We’re thinking four passengers is the ideal, especially with the middle seat arm rest dropped down. The standard 33.5 cubic feet of storage space nearly doubles with the rear seat folded. Another nifty feature is the 5,290-pound towing capacity when properly equipped. No doubt, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a model that challenges the Jaguar’s trailering prowess.

Let’s do tech. No model built these days is without its share of technologies. Jaguar calls its system InControl Touch, a multimedia system featuring an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation guidance, Bluetooth connectivity, integrated text-to-voice, apps, and climate control. Choose the “Pro” version and a 10.2-inch screen is present as well as enhanced navigation. A head-up display and an 11-speaker Meridian audio system are also present.

2017 Jaguar F-PACE

The 2017 F-PACE is an almost guaranteed slam dunk. In a market where segment sales are easily outpacing the industry average, the F-PACE’s timing is spot on. If there is any doubt about that, then cast your eyes at Land Rover to witness this SUV-only marque’s own booming success.

Diesel Does It: Range Rover HSE

February 24, 2016 by admin 5 Comments

Britain’s Range Rover line adds a turbo-diesel in the North American market. If you are a luxury sport utility vehicle shopper, then you should seriously consider this potent powerplant.

There is nothing greater in the Land Rover universe than a Range Rover. Since 1970, Range Rover has represented the pinnacle line of SUVs within the Land Rover fold, and is now composed of three models, including the eponymous Range Rover. Consider Land Rover the cake and Range Rover as the delicious thick layer of icing slathering it.

2016 Range Rover HSE.
2016 Range Rover HSE.

2016 Range Rover HSE

A 2016 Range Rover HSE td6 SUV was a recent visitor and this one came outfitted with a 3.0-liter, turbocharged V-6 engine. Yes, Land Rover has a diesel for the US market, and for the second time in three weeks I was able to test one as equipped. Indeed, just two weeks earlier a similarly powered Range Rover Sport was provided, providing me with my initial taste of UK-built diesel goodness.

The new diesels are the same displacement as the supercharged V-6 gasoline engines you’ll find in many Jaguar and Land Rover products. Although diesels are typically heavier than gas-powered counterparts, the turbo-diesel is 18 pounds lighter. Further, the diesels are nearly just as quick, traveling from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds or a half-second slower than the supercharged gasoline equivalent. So much for a weak engine.

But where the new turbo-diesel shines best is in fuel economy. The Range Rover is EPA-rated at 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, offering a 32 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the petrol-powered model. Throw in the longevity factor of diesels and you have one more reason to consider this option, especially if you plan to keep your Range Rover for a long time.

No doubt about it, the Range Rover is a heavy vehicle. The test model weighed 4,883 pounds, yet coming in substantially less than the 5,840-pound Cadillac Escalade I tested in 2014 and even 900 fewer pounds than a comparable GMC Yukon Denali. Certainly, any high-profile vehicle weighing more than two tons will project its heaviness, especially when ascending steep hills and powering through the twisties.

Robust Power, Especially When Needed

The Range Rover makes 254 horsepower, but its 443 foot-pounds of torque becomes evident early on and especially as you pass a line of vehicles on the highway. That power provides stellar off-the-mark acceleration and on-road execution. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain pushes forward, imbuing confidence in the driver.

Some people are put-off by diesel clatter, a timbre that becomes increasingly louder as temperatures fall or when the RPMs rise. Inside the cabin, the tone was but a murmur. Stand astride the front end when the engine is running and its reassuring tonality is apparent. What’s doubtful is whether you’ll ever hear a level of clatter matching most diesels of yesteryear or equalling the racket emanating from heavy-duty pickup trucks. Silence may be golden, but even minimal diesel clatter is reassuring.

Volkswagen Scandal Tarnishes the Industry

Thanks to Volkswagen’s problems with diesels, namely its emissions cheating, some people take a dim view of all things diesel. Definitely, that’s an unfortunate reality as the attributes of these engines outweigh the highly exaggerated noxiousness of same.

Indeed, where Volkswagen’s diesel engines reportedly emit more than 40 times the legal limit of pollutants, Jaguar Land Rover engineered its diesels to minimize contaminants. They had to if they were to meet the current Euro 6 pollution standards as well as pass muster with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California’s Air Resources Board.

All three agencies have approved the new diesel thanks in large part to the company’s Low Pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. In effect, the low pressure system holds back recirculation to the turbo and an intercooler, for a lower level of nitrogen oxide (NOx) according to Road & Track. Thusly, the pollutant is converted into innocuous nitrogen and water, with no harmful impact on the environment.

Like other manufacturers, Land Rover utilizes urea to maintain the diesel’s cleanliness. Fluid replenishment comes every 10,000 miles, matching what competitors such as Mercedes-Benz mandate.

Making the Case for Diesels

So, not only is the diesel a clean burning engine delivering copious amounts of power with excellent fuel efficiency and the promise of engine longevity, but its peak power nearly matches that of the available supercharged V-8 and its 461 foot-pounds of torque. The beefy V8 is EPA-rated at 14 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway, therefore choosing the diesel will give you corresponding power and with fuel savings topping 50 percent.

Have I made a compelling case for the diesel? I hope so. Personally, I’m tired of the sensationalism some critics espouse about all things diesel. Of course, Volkswagen defrauded everyone by passing off its engines as “clean diesels” when they weren’t. Yet, applying a broad brush across the entire industry is not simply disingenuous, but suggests an ulterior motive is at work.

For luxury SUV shoppers, heeding such critics mean ignoring a very capable engine that is matched well with the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, what would be my personal choice if I were shopping for one. And with diesel fuel prices lower than premium gasoline, the additional cost factor has shrunk.

Lastly, all the other attributes of these SUVs have preceded them — the new diesel simply amplifies what makes Range Rover the cream of the luxury SUV crop (See Also — Range Rover SVR: Fastest SUV in the World?).

Jaguar XF: Rock Star Saloon

February 16, 2016 by admin 5 Comments

Jaguar is on the prowl. This marque’s midsize XF is simply a star.

2016 Jaguar XF
2016 Jaguar XF.

More than once I’ve been asked by car fans for the precise year when Jaguar began its momentous renaissance. I immediately direct them to the midsize XF sedan, a model introduced in 2007 (2009 in North America) and the first Jaguar to sport the marque’s modern countenance.

The XF’s expression is the work of the award-winning Scottish designer, Ian Callum, who had previously influenced the face of the 2004 S-Type as well as the rear of the 2004 X-Type Estate. In 2005, Callum was entrusted with the sacred task of bringing the British marque into the 21st century and did so by fashioning an all-new design language.

That guise has since expanded to other models, including the XJ and F-TYPE and soon to a pair of all-new models — the compact XE sedan and the brand’s first crossover SUV, the F-PACE. But before the new models debut, the next-generation Jaguar XF sedan has arrived, and is once again ready to take on the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Lexus GS, Audi A6 and similar models.

The second-generation Jaguar XF takes up the mantle placed upon it by the first-generation model, with a look that is at once sporty and luxurious. It also is an evolutionary change, complementing the look of the first model. Jaguar saw no need to mess with success, thus the similarities between the two.

2016 Jaguar XF
Priced from $51,900 for the Premium edition, all models are powered by a 3.0-liter, supercharged V-6 engine making 340 or 380 horsepower and 332 foot-pounds of torque and comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available.

The 2016 Jaguar XF can also be had in Prestige ($56,500), R-Sport ($60,650), and S ($62,700) packages. Choose all-wheel drive model and add $3,000 to each trim level. As tested, an R Sport RWD model was presented and dressed in an Ammonite Grey-Metallic patina ($550) and offered a head-up display ($990) and adaptive dynamics ($1,000), bringing this sedan’s final price to $64,185. That means you can easily pay upwards of $70,000 for this sedan, depending on the packages selected.

As is a common practice with modern Jaguar models, much aluminum is used. Indeed, Jaguar says that it employs one-piece aluminum body side pressings, utilizing a single sheet to increase overall stiffness as well as to advance surface purity. Thus, no joints are visible, giving this model a layout symmetry you won’t find elsewhere.

Furthermore, the current iteration is up to 265 pounds lighter (all-wheel drive version) than the previous model. Jaguar also added two inches between the wheels, while reducing its overall length by 0.3 inches. Jaguar claims that the sedan has a near perfect 50-50 weight distribution.

2016 Jaguar XF
From stem to stern, the XF looks as if it is ready to leap, befitting its Jaguar moniker. By now, the “Jaguar look” should be recognizable with its gaping maw, distinct embrasures and sleek headlamps with distinctive daytime running lights. A multi-creased hood and strong shoulders complete this sedan’s frontal presentation.

Along the sides you will find upper and lower character lines, body sculpting, aluminum accented side vents, aluminum-clad wheels, and a sloping roof line. The rear deck is raised and includes a tail lip spoiler, wraparound combination lamps joined by aluminum garnishment, body sculpting and a pair of exhaust tips.

Inside, the cabin is orderly, clean and exquisitely fitted. Jaguar does an excellent job of matching the interiors found in the top German brands, making use of high-end materials and carefully fitted at that.

The presentation is both elegant and simple, although there is a bit of drama present as the outboard vents on the dashboard pivot into place when the ignition is engaged. The instrument panel features a two cowl design — driver information and tachometer with the speedometer fixed between the two. The leather-wrapped steering wheel offers secondary driver and audio controls on its face and comes with a pair of thick steering grips.

2016 Jaguar XF
The center console is a no-drama arrangement, with a pair of vents on top, followed by a large color touchscreen display augmented by rows of switches on each side. Beneath that are the heating and air conditioning controls, the push button start and an open compartment with a grip pad to keep your smartphone securely in place.

The transmission dial remains flush with the surface of console and only emerges when the ignition is on. Switches, cup holders, and an armrest/storage compartment separate the seats.

It would be crass disregard on my part to gloss over the XF’s interior and not call attention to at least some of the high-end materials used. Special touches, including a broad aluminum finisher across the dashboard, is present. Soft to the touch, yet firm leather seats provide a revivifying sensation after a long day. With up to 10 color combinations, there is a look for everyone, although I must say that the saddle seat overlay offered a pleasing contrast to the mocha interior.

Midsize sedans in this segment should seat five in comfort and that is precisely what the Jaguar XF does. The extra two inches added between the wheels afforded expanded legroom for rear seating passengers. Three adults can sit comfortably astride in the rear compartment, although for maximum comfort two adults with the center armrest unfolded is the best choice there.

2016 Jaguar XF
Push the ignition button and the entertainment begins — the transmission dial emerges and the two air vents swing into place. The engine lets out a restrained growl, then purrs as long as you remain at idle.

All models make 340 horsepower, except for the XF S edition — a software tweak bumps up that horsepower to 380. Regardless, all models make 332 foot-pounds of torque and thanks to boosting that comes via a supercharger, the dreaded turbo lag is absent.

Needless to say, the Jaguar XF is optimized for the twisty roads and is ready to strut its stuff. Off-the-line acceleration is fast, coming in at 5.3 seconds. What I liked best, though, is its passing power, but it does have a downside —you may hit 80 mph before you know it, getting the ticket-issuing attention of law enforcement personnel.

The XF’s steering system is EPS — electronic power steering — and shares its engineering with the very capable F-TYPE. The torque vectoring (AWD models) and braking system is also an F-TYPE loaner as is the integral link independent rear suspension. Up front, are control arms of unequal length, similar to the F-TYPE, but designed for the XF.

Another feature all AWD models get is an adaptive surface response system much like those used in Land Rovers. It works by constantly checking the road conditions and adjusting the throttle, transmission, steering and braking proportionately. Snow, ice, rain, dirt, what have you —as it is detected, the system makes the proper adjustments. The test model included this feature.

2016 Jaguar XF
I was reminded more than once of the F-TYPE as I was driving the XF. Although the F-TYPE is shorter, sits closer to the ground and is lower overall, the XF taps the sports car’s spirited drive and does so admirably.

Like any luxury sports sedan — or model claiming such — the proof is always in the handling. The XF stays poised with the transmission shifting seamlessly up and down the band and matching the engine revs along the way. The chassis remains stabilized and the steering is responsive when navigating the curves. The Jaguar XF is another example of a true driver’s car and offers a tantalizing option to each of its “name brand” competitors.

Should you consider the Jaguar XF? Yes, especially if you’re shopping in the segment and would like a model that isn’t the same as what everyone else is driving. Beyond that, you have a highly capable, attractive and cosseting sedan, effectively matching what the competitors offer and for a competitive price point.
