LINCOLN MKC

Uncovered: Ford Escape, Lincoln Corsair Engine Preview

February 21, 2019 by admin

The Ford Escape has been one of the best-selling small crossover utility vehicles since its 2001 debut. The earliest models shared the same architecture with the Mazda Tribute. There was also a Mercury Milan variant until Ford canceled the brand in 2011.

The Fourth-Generation Ford Escape

Ford rolled out the third and current-generation Escape in 2013, so it is time for a new model to hit the market. Our sources say it will happen sometime this year, with the 2020 Escape arriving as soon as this summer.

The Escape is no longer related to the Mazda Tribute, as the latter was replaced by the CX-5. But there is a Lincoln MKC variant, a high-end take on the small Ford SUV. For 2020, that premium model will also sport a new Lincoln Corsair name as the marque continues to move away from its previous alphanumeric nomenclature.

Several sources (including Car & Driver) are reporting on the powertrain offerings for the new Escape and they’re interesting, to say the least. The information was culled from paperwork Ford submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Escape Engine Options

Powering the base Escape model is a turbocharged 1.3-liter three-cylinder engine. This will be the first three-banger in the segment, but it isn’t the first Ford model powered by three cylinders. Previously, both the Fiesta and Focus offered one.

The new engine will replace the current 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder engine, which will still be available. At the top of the engine lineup is a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with 237 horsepower (down from the current 245 horsepower). Likely, all three engines will work with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Besides the three gasoline engine choices, Ford will offer two hybrid variants — standard and plug-in versions, which will work with Ford’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. This is also the second go-around for an Escape Hybrid. From 2004 to 2012, Ford offered the hybrid, selling approximately 118,000 units over nine model years. Further, Ford was the first manufacturer to provide a compact hybrid SUV, as a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid didn’t arrive until 2016.

An EcoBoost (turbo) engine is always a given with any Ford product.

Lincoln Corsair Replaces the MKC

As for the Lincoln Corsair, its base engine is the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which is the same as the Escape’s top motor. The Corsair will also offer a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, generating 275 horsepower. That’s the same engine available in the MKC, although horsepower is down by 10 here.

A Corsair hybrid seems likely too, but it may only include the plug-in version and that with all-wheel drive. Moreover, while the Escape’s arrival will come first, the Corsair may arrive sometime in 2020 as a 2021 model. Still, that’s ahead of schedule for Lincoln’s smallest utility vehicle.

Future Ford and Lincoln Vehicles

Ford’s lineup will soon be comprised entirely of utility vehicles, trucks, and vans, with the Mustang the lone car exception. A new Explorer is here and the next-generation Edge is in the works. We’ll see the Bronco SUV sometime in 2020. A replacement for the EcoSport may soon follow.

As for Lincoln, Ford’s luxury brand may continue with its two-sedan lineup, although the MKZ name will likely disappear. Sales of the large Continental are slow, but a refresh seems likely.

As for utility vehicles, Lincoln’s lineup will soon range from the Corsair to the Navigator, with the Nautilus and Aviator occupying the middle spots. And as for the wagon-like MKT, it will soldier on at least for a few more years, but in livery availability only.

Lincoln MKC: Luxurious, Entry-Level Crossover

February 8, 2016 by admin 8 Comments

The smallest Lincoln model is the most original one yet.

2016 Lincoln MKC
2016 Lincoln MKC.

The Ford Motor Company’s Lincoln marque has fallen far since 1998, the last year it was the top-selling luxury automotive brand in the United States. These days, the segment is dominated by BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz with Audi, Cadillac, Acura, and Infiniti also outselling Lincoln.

But there is hope for a brand that once seemed ready to follow Mercury to its own Ford-orchestrated demise. In 2015, sales rose by 7.1 percent, topping 100,000 units for the first time in years and at a pace that is 25 percent higher than 2013 calendar year sales.

Lincoln: Dominated by SUVs

The brand’s lineup is composed of six vehicles — four SUVs and two sedans — representing the kind of product mix that should ensure future growth. After all, demand for SUVs is surging and at the expense of sedans.

Two of those SUVs, the compact MKC and the midsize MKX crossovers, are contributing nearly half the brand’s sales. The MKX is new for 2016 and follows the all-new MKC to the market by one year.

2016 Lincoln MKC

A 2016 Lincoln MKC was a recent weekly driver, a model that shares its platform with the Ford Escape. Common for the Lincoln line is its close relationship with Ford vehicles, with trim differences typically serving as the main distinction between the two. It’s a point of contention regularly lobbed by the brand’s most strident critics, including some who still think Lincoln should be vanquished to the dustbin of canceled automotive brands.

The MKC doesn’t completely change things, but it does have its own “skin” and offers an engine choice not found in the Escape: a 2.3-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 285 horsepower and 305 foot-pounds of torque. That engine is also available in the current generation Ford Mustang and represents an upgrade from the standard 2.0-liter, turbocharged “four” making 240 horsepower and 270 foot-pounds of torque, what also serves as the top motor for the Escape’s three-engine lineup. Certainly, there remains a connection between the two brands even with Lincoln’s most dissimilar model.

The test model came with the more powerful engine, an all-wheel-drive crossover paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The base model, by the way, offers standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. I’m of the mind if you are looking at a luxury crossover, opting for all-wheel drive is the way to go — as a result of that choice, you’ll enjoy improved handling and better overall valuation.

The Lincoln Motif

Lincoln’s current design language is evident across the MKC’s front fascia. Marked by a split-wing grille, its two headlamp assembles are seamlessly connected to each side of the grille for an elegant look. Fishhook-style LED lights are also present. At the bumper are additional LED lights contained within pockets split by spear-shaped trim. Notably, a narrow lower grille opening and a front skid plate round out the expression.

The MKC also has an elegantly creased hood, large wheel wells, belt line character lines and body sculpting. From the rear is a clamshell liftgate with an embedded spoiler, wraparound windows, large combination lamps connected by a reflector, rear fog lamps, and dual exhaust ports.

The overall look is at once sporty and elegant, matching well with the other players in the segment, including the Cadillac SRX, Audi’s Q3, the Lexus NX, and a host of other entry-level models in the luxury realm.

Swank, Technologically-Laden Cabin

Inside, the MKC provides seating for five. But there is an important caveat here: while up front room is generous, rear legroom is tight. In addition, the sloping roofline impedes headroom, especially so when the panoramic Vista Roof is present. Consider this model best suited for two or ideal for a young family with two small children.

The test model came with one of Lincoln’s Reserve equipment group, what lifts the affluence quotient to its highest level for the MKC.

Ebony premium leather is found throughout the cabin, covering the seats, wrapping the steering wheel, dressing the instrument panel, filling the door inlays, and highlighting the center console as well as the front center storage compartment. The look is visually pleasing with twin-stitching throughout with an absolutely plush feel about it. Aluminum edging and available genuine wood trim complete the visage.

The instrument panel features a two-analog display with tachometer and speedometer readouts. In the center of it all is a digital driver’s information display, adjustable by means of switches on the face of the steering wheel. The steering column offers standard tilt and telescopic adjustment. In the Reserve package, that adjustment is made electronically.

Center Console Changes

The big change for 2016 is found in the center console. But first, let’s look at what that console has on it that you typically won’t find elsewhere. That’s right — transmission shift buttons. Yes, indeed, to the left of the console display are buttons for controlling the transmission. It may seem like an odd placement and it is. The benefit, however, is clear: instead of the shifter cluttering the steering column or occupying space between the front seats, that room is now free. Therefore, at the base of the console and between the front seats is ample storage space becomes available, with two cup holders and the expected USB, auxiliary audio input, and a 12-volt outlet.

For the first time since its introduction, the Lincoln telematics system has gotten it right. Previous editions, including what was found in the 2015 MKC, required users to use hand gestures such as swipes to operate the system. Needless to say, the swipe motions didn’t always work, creating immense frustration and much disappointment with Lincoln products and adversely reflected in consumer surveys and reports such as those conducted by JD Power and Consumer Reports.

The new system has a tablet layout to it, with large icons at the ready to manage your music, operate the navigation, and control other features. Its bright display and it works.

Beneath the color display are knobs, switches and buttons for operating the climate control system and seat heating and cooling controls.

On the Road

Settle in behind the steering wheel, push the start button, engage the transmission, and you’re ready to take off. Lincoln’s line of EcoBoost engines are shared with the Ford brand, although the larger of the two engines are found in select products only, such as the Ford Mustang. Both engines have ample power available but aren’t especially fuel-efficient despite the “eco” connotation.

What you have here is a pair of capable motors that deliver optimum power on demand. Most people should find that power sufficient for their needs, even with the base engine. This SUV moves from a dead stop with authority and turbo lag is minimal and not especially intrusive. You’ll climb to highway speeds at a fast clip and enjoy ample passing power. On twisty roads the all-wheel-drive model aids in handling, limiting body roll while providing a satisfactory driving experience. The brakes are firm with little fade noted. All around, this SUV provides a competitive entry in the segment.

Pricing and Comparison Shopping

Lincoln prices the base, front-wheel drive model from $33,260, representing the Reserve package. The Select package is priced from $37,090, and the Reserve package begins at $40,060. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive adds about $2,500 to the price.

My test model had a $50,200 sticker price with $6,320 in options. Those options added the larger EcoBoost engine ($1,140), a THX II audio package ($995), 20-inch polished aluminum wheels ($1,145), a climate package with a heated steering wheel ($605), and an Mac technology package ($2,295).

Shop carefully and you should be able to negotiate a nicely optioned package for about $43,000. Black Label trim with its special two-tone color scheme and plush interior will bring your MKC’s price up accordingly. Determine the look and feel that is right for you and make your decision as suits you best.

Will Lincoln Toss Its Current Naming Convention?

April 23, 2015 by admin 1 Comment

The Continental name has served Lincoln well and returns in 2017 in time for the marque’s centennial. Widespread support for the model name could mean that Lincoln will return to its heritage names.

2017 Lincoln Continental

The 2017 Lincoln Continental.

The Lincoln Motor Company (Lincoln) may have started something when it showcased its Continental Concept at the New York International Auto Show this spring. The proposed model, expected to replace the MKS for the 2017 model year, was well received. And not just for its good looks: the Continental name is coming back, one of the most venerable model names in the near 100-year history of the marque.

Three-Letter Nomenclature

The Continental moniker may presage a shift in model naming convention for the Lincoln brand, ending a decade long consecution of mystifying names that have left people scratching their heads. Presently, all models — except for the Navigator — begin with “MK” and end with a third letter. Thus, we have the MKZ and MKS sedans and the MKC, MKX and the MKT crossover utility vehicles.

Originally, the “MK” designation was supposed to represent “Mark” as in “Mark Z” or “Mark X.” But soon customers and everyone else were pronouncing each letter, rendering the original plan dysfunctional. The problem, however, has always been trying to understand what each letter represents.

Indeed, the first of the three-letter nomenclature models was the 2007 Lincoln MKZ. It derived its name from the Lincoln Zephyr, the name it used in the previous year — its first year of production. The Lincoln-Zephyr, by the way, was a low-priced entry luxury car produced by Lincoln from 1936-1940. Years later it was followed by other entry-level sedans, such as the Versailles and LS.

Following the MKS, the MKT, MKX and MKS debuted. The MKC is the most recent addition to the model line, a compact crossover introduced in spring 2014.

Out With the New, Bring Back the Old?

Yesterday, Automotive News gave its considerable credence to what was previously a rumor. The news outlet broached the naming convention subject with Joe Hinrichs, Ford President of the Americas, who admitted that change may be forthcoming.

The atypical alphanumeric nomenclature used by premium brands has worked well for others, but not so for Lincoln. To distinguish itself from the luxury pack, Hinrichs said that the marque could leverage its heritage. And Continental is as significant as any model name in Lincoln’s repertoire.

Like other premium brands, Lincoln’s current naming convention was designed to help people focus on the brand, not separate model names. It is a practice that has served Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz well, and has also been adopted by Acura, Infiniti, Cadillac, Mazda and a few others. Cadillac and Infiniti, by the way, have or are making the transition twice.

Lincoln Heritage and the Chinese Consumer

A rich heritage of trusted names could enable Lincoln to reach customers that its currently named products are not doing. Certainly, the Navigator name has not hurt Lincoln. Through March 2015, Navigator sales are up 84.2 percent. Other than the MKC, which didn’t appear until later in the year, sales for the four other Lincoln products are way down. Lincoln sales are off by 0.6 percent for the first three months of 2015.

Another factor in name changing may have something to do with a rising Lincoln demographic — the Chinese consumer. The Lincoln brand is new to the world’s largest automotive market, but its heritage is not. Certainly, that’s an advantage that few brands can boast and what Lincoln might leverage.

Back to the Future

Hinrichs’ pronouncement should not be taken as an off the cuff remark. Judging by the online chatter, including comments to the Automotive News article, there is a groundswell of support for Lincoln to return to its roots. If it does, then Continental may some day be joined by Town Car and Mark X, model names with marketability and esteem.

Ford Auto Trends: Worse Before It Gets Better

December 4, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Ramping up production of the 2015 F-150 continues.

US auto sales continue to rise and are up 5.4 percent through the first 11 months of 2014. Across the board increases are being felt by all major manufacturers with one important exception: the Ford Motor Company.

Ford brand sales are down for the year with overall company sales off by 0.7 percent through November. That represents a modest decrease and sales are likely to finish down for the year when 2014’s statistics are released in early January. Moreover, Ford has told Automotive News that additional declines are likely over the next several months as it launches its ground-breaking and innovative 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Declining Market Share

Ford blue ovalFord has seen its market share fall in the past year, declining from 15.3 percent in November 2013 to 14.3 percent in November 2014. The Chrysler Group is among the automakers that may have benefited from that decline as its own share of the market now stands at 12.5 percent, just behind Toyota and Ford.

The Ford F-150 is hardly in any danger of losing its place as the top-selling pickup truck, the best-selling model of any kind in America. Sales are down 1.4 percent for the year, but Ford should still sell about 735,000 units for the year.

Ramping Up Production

Gumming up the works for Ford is the transition the company is making at factories that previously built the last generation F-150 and are now manufacturing the new model. Ford has been deliberate in its change over as it shifts to an aluminum-based body. The new, lighter model loses more than 700 pounds in the process and now delivers a segment-leading 26 mpg on the highway. Ford has so much invested in its most popular model that its execution must be flawless. Likely, it will take several more months before Ford completes is production ramp up and enjoys increased sales with it.

Despite the challenges it is facing with the F-150, Ford is seeing strong interest in another all-new model: the 2015 Ford Mustang. Ford’s pony car is once again the best-selling sport coupe model in America as sales climbed by 62.4 percent to 8,728 units sold last month. Its chief nemesis remains the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford should stay ahead of its competitor until at least an all-new Camaro is released next year. Through November, Camaro sales numbered 79,669 sold to the Mustang’s 73,124 units sold.

Another model that should benefit the blue oval is its all new to the US market Ford Transit van. The Transit is Ford’s full-size van and the replacement model for the E-Series. Like the F-150, the E-Series has had a lock on the large van segment for more than three decades. The new Transit is based on a model sold in Europe and should eventually top 10,000 units sold each month as Ford completes that transition.

Lincoln auto sales.

Lincoln sales are up significantly over 2013.

Lincoln Rising

Up until recently, the Ford brand has been the company’s brightest shining star. This year, its Lincoln brand has been a positive contributor with sales up by 15 percent through November.

Lincoln sales grew by 20.6 percent in November largely on the strength of its all-new, compact MKC crossover utility vehicle. Another utility vehicle, the Lincoln Navigator, is also new for 2015. Two other models, an MKZ sedan and its MKX crossover, are also ahead of last year’s sales pace.

If Ford’s sales do reverse course in December, incentives may play a big part in it. As the month advances, Ford may ramp up discounts on several models in response to deeper cuts made by its competitors.

Ford Bets $5 Billion on Lincoln

October 30, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Lincoln gets another lease on life.

2015 Lincoln MKZ.
This Lincoln MKZ is just one example of a Ford-based model.

Ford’s Lincoln brand may have some life left in it after all. Last week, Reuters reported that Ford has committed to invest at least $5 billion in Lincoln over the next several years as well as to introduce an all-new modular platform for the brand and for select Ford products. Reuters also said that its previous CEO, Alan Mulally had considered shutting Lincoln or selling it. The new boss, Mark Fields, plans to revive Lincoln and has gained the backing of Bill Ford and other board members to carry out the initiative.

Lincoln Motor Company

The Lincoln Motor Company, purchased by Ford in 1922 and championed as the company’s luxury brand, has seen good times and bad times. The good times were as recently as 1998 when Lincoln held the top spot among luxury makes in the United States. Today, Lincoln sells far fewer models and is in eighth place, selling about half as many cars as its arch-rival, Cadillac.

Much of that neglect can be found in two areas: financial support and products.

Financially, the Ford Motor Company has provided $500 million or less in annual support. That amount covers all expenditures, including product development, engineering, tooling, facilities and related costs. Introducing a new platform alone typically costs at least $1 billion.

Ford, Lincoln Product Similarities

As for product, Ford has kept Lincoln’s costs to a minimum by building models that are based on Ford platforms. Look at any Lincoln product and there is a corresponding Ford model. For instance, the Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition are similar as are the MKX crossover and the Ford Edge. Over the past few years Ford has sought some differentiation, but the Lincoln MKZ is still closely related to the Ford Fusion. One of its most recent new models, the MKC crossover, is built on the Ford Escape’s platform. But at least it has its own skin and interior.

News of Ford’s additional investment in Lincoln follows the brand’s introduction to the Chinese market, with the first customer deliveries having already occurred this month. The United States and China will likely be Lincoln’s two largest markets going forward, with Ford estimating 300,000 annual global sales by 2020, an ambitious number that would nearly triple sales within five years.

D6 Modular Platform

The modular premium platform (dubbed D6) Ford has in mind for Lincoln would produce front-, rear- and all-wheel drive vehicles. Likely, its introduction is at least five years away and that means the current model line would be revived once before any new models roll out. Reuters says that the first model would be a midsize sedan followed by a crossover. That could mean replacements for the MKZ and MKT, the latter based on the platform underpinning the Ford Flex.

In the interim, replacements for the MKX crossover and MKS sedan will arrive in early 2015 and in early 2016 respectively. A stretched wheelbase version of the MKS is in the offing too, but is slated for the Chinese market only. Message board comments from Lincoln dealers and supporters expressed dismay that the US market isn’t being considered for the stretched model, underscoring what some see as continued neglect for the brand.

After all, with the Lincoln Town Car no longer produced, there is no model to fill its place. Lincoln has attempted to do so with the MKT crossover, but that effort has failed.

The Competitor Factor

That Ford wants to make good on its Lincoln revival is a step in the right direction. Whether it pulls it off is another matter, especially as its competitors continue to grow and produce the types of vehicles customers want.

3 All-New Models for the Big Three in 2015

May 20, 2014 by admin 2 Comments

New 2015 models on the way.

The Big Three automakers continue to fight back in a wide open US market. GM remains the market leader, but Ford and Fiat Chrysler continue to boost market share in various segments, sometimes at the expense of each other. For 2015, all three automakers will have several new models to offer including the following three that are all-new and should boost sales.

Ford Motor Company — Lincoln MKC

Props must be given to Lincoln dealers who have suffered enormously since the Mercury brand was discontinued in 2011. With very few models to offer, Mercury-free Lincoln dealers have seen sales tumble and their profits with it.

Ford has promised to revive its luxury brand and began to make a positive stride last year with the introduction of the updated MKZ sedan. That model has helped sales, but Lincoln dealers want and need more. Fortunately, that wait is nearly over as the Lincoln MKC crossover utility vehicle debuts this June.

Never mind that the Lincoln MKC shares its platform with the Ford Escape. You will not find badge engineering here as the MKC has its own body, interior and many mechanical components that are unique to this model. Priced from $33,100, the MKC joins two other crossovers in the Lincoln line: MXK and MKT. Lincoln still sells its traditional body-on-frame Navigator, what will also be new for 2015.

Big Three: Lincoln MKC

A pair of EcoBoost engines (i.e., turbochargers, direct injection, variable valve timing) will be available with the MKC including a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 240 horsepower and is also sold with the Ford Escape. New for 2015 is a 2.3-liter four that makes 275 horsepower and is available only with the all-wheel-drive edition. Standard adaptive suspension, bi-xenon headlamps, push-button transmission, and real leather and wood are among its highlights, features you won’t find in the Escape.

The Lincoln MKC serves one of the fastest growing segments in all of autodom: compact luxury utility vehicles. It will have many competitors including the Cadillac SRX, Mercedes-Benz GLK, Audi Q3, and the BMW X3. It should quickly become Lincoln’s best selling model, even topping the 40,000 units the MKZ is projected to garner this year.

General Motors Company — Cadillac ATS Coupe

Two years ago GM introduced the Cadillac ATS, a compact sedan that slotted below the popular CTS line. It was the first time since the Catera of the 1990s and the Cimarron of the 1980s that Cadillac has sold a compact model, with the ATS immediately proving a hit for the brand.

GM made it known back then that new ATS models would follow. The next body style for the ATS line is a coupe, a model that has the BMW 4-Series in its crosshairs. Comparable models from Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Infiniti and Audi are also game.

Cadillac has priced its luxury 2+2 sport coupe from $38,900. What you get is a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine makes 272 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel-drive is available.

Big Three: Cadillac ATS Coupe

You can also choose a 321-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 engine paired with a 6-speed automatic. Brembo brakes are standard across the model line; magnetic ride control suspension is also available.

Cadillac describes the ATS coupe as a “true driver’s car” with four color themes available making use of Sapele wood, aluminum trim and leather. Its near 50-50 front to rear weight distribution, magnesium paddle shifters, speed sensitive steering, and independent suspension are designed to emphasize the thrill of the drive.

Cadillac sales have slipped slightly this year, but the addition of the ATS coupe and an all-new Escalade should help GM’s luxury brand bring in more customers.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, N.V. — Chrysler 200

Fresh off the official merger of Fiat and Chrysler to form Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, N.V., the combined corporate entity continues to bang out new models. One such vehicle is the Chrysler 200, a midsize sedan that has not competed well in a segment dominated by the Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, Nissan Altima and the Ford Fusion.

The Chrysler 200 made its debut in 2011, essentially a refreshed version of the previous Chrysler Sebring. The name change alone helped sales for a model line that also included a convertible. The convertible is no more, just a sedan will be offered.

The latest iteration of the 200 is not like any one previously offered. It is based on Fiat’s compact-wide platform, what underpins the Dodge Dart and Jeep Cherokee. That platform has been stretched and widened to accommodate the Chrysler, a model priced from $21,700.

Big Three: Chrysler 200

A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine making 184 horsepower is standard. Also available is a 295 horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 engine. Both engines are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. New for 2015 is the available all-wheel drive, an improved infotainment system and other technologies, plus eight airbags.

Perhaps the biggest change for the 200 is how Chrysler is recasting the brand. In April, CEO Sergio Marchionne said that Chrysler is now its mainstream brand. In other words, it no longer competes with Buick and defunct Mercury, rather it is on the same playing field as Ford and Chevrolet.

Big Three and Other New Models

Auto Trends will have reviews of these and other new models as they pass through our press fleet. That information will be posted to our new car reviews section in the coming months.

Lincoln Bets That China Investment Will Pay Off

April 24, 2014 by admin 2 Comments

Is China Lincoln’s promise land?

Lincoln China
Alan Mulally, president and CEO, Ford Motor Company; Jim Farley, executive vice president, Ford global marketing, sales and service and Lincoln; and Robert Parker, president, Lincoln China at the April 2014 Lincoln roll out in China.

The Lincoln Motor Company is back. Well, at least the Lincoln brand has some life left in it. US sales are up by 35.9 percent through March 2014, well ahead of the industry average. Sales are still way below the hundreds of thousands of models that Ford’s luxury brand used to sell yearly about two decades ago, but its outlook is considerably brighter than in 2011 when Mercury was killed off.

On to China

Credit the all-new 2014 MKZ sedan with bolstering Lincoln sales and an upcoming MKC crossover with giving Lincoln dealers hope that additional customer interest is forthcoming. What also may help Lincoln’s visibility is its introduction in China, the world’s largest car buying market.

China is the auto industry’s lifeline, a market that quickly emerged as the global leader when US car sales tanked in 2009. Impervious to the recession, Chinese consumers snapped up nearly everything available to them, pushing year-over-year sales up by 30 percent or more for several years.

Though the Chinese market has since slowed down, analysts still expect that it may soon support 30 million cars sold annually, far above the 17+ million record for the US market. Ford, like all the other automotive players in China, wants to increase sales. Until now, only the Ford brand has been sold there — Lincoln sales start later this year.

The Lincoln Space

Leading up to the Beijing auto show, Ford formally introduced Lincoln, promising to bring a “new breed” of global vehicles to China. The Lincoln MKZ and MKC will kick things off this fall with three more models added by 2016. Those three include a midsize luxury SUV (MKX), a midsize luxury sedan, and the Lincoln Navigator — its full-size, body-on-frame SUV.

For China, Ford developed a unique customer education experience dubbed The Lincoln Space to introduce the brand to the Chinese. Ford describes it as a “bespoke environment” in a bid to convey a “personalized luxury vehicle ownership experience” for Lincoln shoppers. Following its Beijing appearance, the exhibit will travel to other cities including Shanghai and Chengdu.

Like other luxury brands, Lincoln has been attempting to upgrade the customer buying experience. With a new network for China that effort is now underway, what could lead to further improvements stateside.

The Lincoln Way

“The Lincoln Way” is an initiative whereby Chinese car shoppers are provided with a tea room, a personalization studio, and personalized technologies to help them choose and build their Lincolns.

“The Lincoln Way captures how Lincoln sells and services its vehicles and how Lincoln customers experience the brand,” said Jim Farley, executive vice president, Ford global marketing, sales and service and Lincoln. “It completely shifts luxury automotive ownership from a sales and service transaction model to an experience model. It was designed in China based on the unmet expectations of luxury customers here, and it will launch here first.”

Ford says that Chinese customers are looking at luxury cars as a way to express their personality. No longer content with buying such vehicles to demonstrate their wealth, the automaker believes that Chinese consumers want to develop a personal relationship with their brands.

Bringing Forth Innovation

The automaker also says that the Chinese market allows the company to innovate, by trying out new methods to reach their customers. The company believes that China ultimately holds the key to Lincoln’s success and assumes that it will one day become its largest market. If so, then China will likely account for more than 160,000 units sold — the sales number Auto Trends has forecast for the brand stateside come 2016 — once the Lincoln MKC has been established.

Given up for dead by many following Mercury’s demise, Lincoln may once again find its place among the luxury brands. It won’t have the products of a Cadillac nor the cachet of a BMW or Mercedes-Benz, but it may provide a match for Acura and deliver customer service not unlike Rolls-Royce.

Lexus NX Crossover Features Brand’s First Turbo

April 14, 2014 by admin 2 Comments

Lexus needs no introduction, but as Toyota’s luxury brand it has lacked a pair of engine choices that some of its chief competitors offer: diesels and turbocharged engines.

Don’t expect to see a diesel-powered Lexus stateside anytime soon — its multiple hybrid offerings fill the need for improved fuel economy. But, as far as turbos go, brand aficionados should be pleased that a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine will be available with the all-new Lexus NX crossover as it is set to make its global debut in Beijing on April 20.

2015 Lexus NX.

2015 Lexus NX

The NX puts Lexus in one of the fastest growing sub-segments of the utility vehicle market: compact luxury crossovers. Top competing models currently on the market or soon to arrive include the BMW X1 and Lincoln MKC as well as an expected model from Cadillac.

The 2015 Lexus NX is derived from the LF-NX concepts, first introduced at auto shows in Tokyo and Frankfurt in 2013. The planned CUV resembles the concept, but its edges have been relaxed while retaining its overall chiseled lines.

As profiled, the RX has a look that complements the larger RX crossover. However, the NX offers a bolder look with innovative LED headlamps and daytime running lights flanking the spindle grille. To the rear are L-shaped combination lamps, complementing the front fascia’s lighting layout.

The crossover’s muscular stance benefits from flared wheel wells, sculpted profile characteristics and a slightly raised roofline to accommodate rear passengers. The new model seats five and features standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive.

Human Machine Interface

Inside, Lexus promises a combination of “hard metallic surfaces and contrasting soft materials” for a unique interior. The center instrument panel is bordered by a pronounced silver frame with knee pads positioned at the bottom of the center stack to support the driver and front passenger. Also at the bottom of the stack is a “Human Machine Interface (HMI),” representing new remote touch technology.

Lexus says that the NX’s driver seat features a low hip point to better connect the driver with the vehicle and to increase head room. The new model also has a long cargo area compartment. Amenities such as leather seating, advanced audio packages, and safety alerts including blind spot monitor will be offered.

Three Powertrain Choices

The 2015 Lexus NX will be offered with three powertrain choices including a normally aspirated 2.0-liter gasoline engine, a turbocharged version of the same, and a full hybrid model. In the US, only the turbo NX 200t and hybrid NX 300h will be sold.

Expect the Lexus NX to debut this fall with pricing near $32,000, matching what its competitors offer. The NX represents the fourth Lexus SUV, joining the RX ($40,795), GX ($49,085) and LX ($82,630). The hybrid version represents the sixth such model sold by Lexus, a market it continues to dominate.

Auto Trends will have more product details to offer including pricing when that information has been released by Lexus.

Lexus Brand Recognition

The Lexus brand continues to enjoy accolades, winning the Most Trusted Luxury Brand for the Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards for the second straight year in 2014. That award is based upon KBB’s Brand Watch, what gauges brand and model perception of more than 12,000 new vehicle shoppers on its website.

In Feb., J.D. Power & Associates also recognized Lexus as the most dependable brand in the 2014 Vehicle Dependability Study for the third consecutive year. Four models — ES, GS, LS and RX — received dependability awards this year. Its flagship LS sedan was the most dependable of all models surveyed, tying the Cadillac DTS for that honor.

Redemption: Lincoln MKZ is a Hit

April 9, 2014 by admin 1 Comment

Whether you love it or hate, the Lincoln MKZ is a sales hit for Ford’s luxury brand. One of five Lincoln models available, the MKZ is also the brands best seller with 9,218 units sold in the US through March 2014. That represents an increase of 145.3 percent year to date, lifting Lincoln sales by 35.9 percent for the year in a market that is up 5.7 percent through the first quarter.

Truly, the MKZ is a sales hit, bringing smiles to Lincoln dealers everywhere. Not since Mercury was killed off at the start of 2011 have dealers had much reason to be happy. At least with Mercury in the fold showroom traffic was steady, but with just five premium versions of Ford brand products remaining, Lincoln’s lease on life seemed like it would be a short one.

Lincoln MKZ

Lincoln’s revival is underway with the MKZ leading the charge. This summer, the MKC crossover joins the line, a compact sport utility vehicle priced from $33,100. Together, the two models should propel Lincoln sales. A rumored rear-wheel-drive sedan based on the platform underpinning the 2015 Ford Mustang may be announced later this year, but for now, Auto Trends will leave that talk in our speculative file.

So, why the appeal for the Lincoln MKZ? For several reasons including the following.

1. It has a competitive price point.

The sweet spot for upscale models is just under $40,000. Indeed, if customers can get the entire package for that price, they’re in.

With a starting price of $35,190, the Lincoln MKZ is positioned to take on a model that offers similar value: the Lexus ES350. The Lexus, like Lincoln with the Ford Fusion, has a step-down twin in the Toyota Avalon. Lexus learned long ago that a competitive price point is an excellent gateway to the brand.

2. A hybrid is available and is a no-charge upgrade.

Add $2,500 to $4,500 to get a hybrid model, right? Well, someone at Ford thought that it would be a great idea to offer a hybrid MKZ with no price premium. That means the same $35,190 starting price for the gas-powered model would apply to the MKZ Hybrid.

And the take rate for this hybrid is excellent as Lincoln recently doubled capacity to meet demand 60 percent of Lincoln MKZ models sold are gas-powered to 40 percent for the hybrid. You won’t find strong demand for a hybrid variant in any other model line.

3. Lincoln shoppers like the brand.

Brand loyalty? Yes, Lincoln has its followers including people once smitten with the retired Town Car. Those drivers, including livery owners, have the MKS (large sedan) and MKT (utility vehicle/wagon) to consider as well as the MKX, a crossover model that was Lincoln’s best seller before the MKZ sales surge took hold.

Certainly, a lot of Lincoln owners departed the make once brand neglect set in some are Lexus owners now. Many others, however, are still around and can be wooed back with stellar service, new designs, finely crafted interiors (i.e., Black Label), and advanced technologies. Oh, yes, a new Navigator debuts later this year too.

4. Lincoln isn’t trying to be something that it is not.

A significant number of my journo colleagues are not happy with Lincoln as some have called on the Ford Motor Company to kill off the brand. While I understand their sentiments, they’re comparing Lincoln with BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Cadillac, to name a few.

Ford’s Lincoln approach is different: they know that there is still strong interest in the brand (see point No. 3) and they don’t have to be something that they’re not. While Cadillac is positioned closer to the Europeans, Lincoln’s nearest competition is Acura, another premium brand with luxury aspirations.

Expect Lincoln to sell 40,000 units each of the MKZ and MKC with another 75,000 to 80,000 units of the other models combined perhaps as early as 2016. Selling 160,000 units would be double what they sold last year and hardly the reason to cancel a brand that isn’t trying to be something that it is not.

Thinking Lincoln MKZ

Clearly, the Ford Motor Company could have tossed Lincoln and succeeded. They’ve always has the option of tearing a page from the Hyundai playbook by selling a variety of standard and premium models under one brand, but have chosen to keep Lincoln around. And with China its next market, the brand once restricted to North America will soon spread out.

Even modest success will be hailed as an amazing feat for a brand whose best days were long ago, but whose future has brightened considerably. Redemption indeed.

Pricing Announced for 2015 Lincoln MKC Crossover

December 18, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

If you are a Lincoln dealer, the arrival of the 2015 Lincoln MKC crossover cannot come soon enough. Since Mercury was dropped by Ford at the end of 2010, Lincoln dealerships have been thirsting for new product. Moreover, the existing Lincoln line has long been weak from top to bottom with only a new MKZ arriving during the past year.

2015 Lincoln MKC Pricing

Come next summer, the 2015 Lincoln MKC will augment Ford’s premium brand line up. This week, Lincoln announced its pricing, giving the new model a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $33,995, including destination and delivery. That price is set below its competition including the Acura RDX priced from $35,415 and the Audi Q5 priced from $38,195.

Three trim levels will be available with the MKC: Premiere, Select and Reserve. MKC shoppers will have a choice of two EcoBoost four cylinder engines and may also pay to upgrade to all-wheel drive from front-wheel drive.

All 2015 Lincoln MKC models will be equipped with 18-inch painted aluminum wheels set within all-season tires, automatic HID headlamps with LED lighting, body-colored heated side mirrors, and LED tail lamps. A smoked chrome grille, bright belt line molding and anodized roof rails are included.

The MKC shares its platform with the Ford Escape.

Cabin Amenities and Trim Levels

Inside, the MKC is furnished with a 10-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, a 4-way power passenger seat with recline, heated front seats, a 60/40 split bench rear seat with recline, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with a tilt and telescopic function. Power windows, power door locks, dual-zone climate control, an overhead console with sunglasses holder, LED map lights, manually adjusted front head rests, and a front floor console with two cup holders is standard.

Choose the MKC Select ($37,225) and your model receives luster nickel wheels, ambient lighting, a 10-way power passenger seat, configurable daytime running lights, power folding mirrors, a universal garage door opener, and a upgraded steering wheel draped in Wollsdorf leather.

For customers considering the MKC Reserve ($40,930), they’ll get two-toned polished wheels, cooled front seats, a power tilt and telescopic steering wheel column, a Vista Roof with power shades, a voice-activated navigation system, an embedded modem, cooled front seats, and a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert.

Other amenities included across the 2015 Lincoln MKC line are remote start, cruise control, four power points, a reverse sensing system, and SYNC with MyLincoln Touch. SYNC is a voice-activated communication and entertainment (infotainment) system featuring an 8-inch touch screen in the center stack.

SYNC with MyLincoln Touch is standard with the MKC.

Free-Standing Packages

Customers can also consider certain free-standing packages and features. SelectPlus ($1,100), available only with the MKC Select brings in voice-activated navigation and the blind-spot navigation system with cross-traffic alert.

A Technology package ($2,235), available only with the MKC Reserve, brings in adaptive cruise control with collision warning and brake support. The package also include active park assist, a front sensing system, and lane-keeping assist.

A Climate package ($580) is available with the Select and Reserve only, what adds rain-sensing wipers, a heated rear seat, a heated steering wheel, and automatic high-beam headlamps.

Free-standing features can be bought regardless of trim level and include upgraded wheels, a Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) suspension system for front-wheel drive editions, an enhanced THX II certified audio system, all-wheel drive, and the larger 2.3-liter engine. A 2.0-liter inline-four is standard. Pricing for these options ranges from $395 for the 19-inch premium painted wheels to $2,495 for all-wheel drive.

2013 Lincoln MKZ

The Lincoln MKZ is the other new product for Ford’s premium brand.

Lincoln Model Line Outlook

With the MKC joining the MKZ and MKZ Hybrid as Lincoln’s newest products, the brand is finally seeing much-needed new product, but there is much more needed to rebuild a brand that last captured the luxury sales crown in 1998. Lincoln’s newest products take aim at a new generation of Lincoln owners, people that are probably not familiar with the brand.

Meanwhile, traditional owners have the MKS sedan and larger crossovers including the MKX and MKT to consider as well as the aged Navigator SUV. All four products are likely to be replaced in the next two to three years, but there is still no Lincoln product that provides a strong differentiation from the Ford brand, a deficiency that will likely limit Lincoln’s appeal going forward.
