MITSUBISHI MIRAGE

What’s Up With Mitsubishi?

March 2, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
The Outlander Sport is one of three Mitsubishi utility vehicles.

As an early supplier of small vehicles to the Chrysler Corporation, Mitsubishi Motors has sold cars on its own stateside for nearly four decades. At one time, the company was a notable player in the market and even had a manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, for building its vehicles – originally in partnership with Chrysler, then on its own.

But much has changed since. The DiamondStar partnership with Chrysler is long gone and, likewise, the Illinois manufacturing plant is now owned by Rivian, who will begin building electric trucks and SUVs there by the end of 2020. Consequently, all current Mitsubishi models are imported from Japan.

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance

Even Mitsubishi’s structure has changed as the company is now controlled by Nissan and it has become the third partner in “the Alliance,” which also includes Renault. In the U.S., we have yet to see Mitsubishi acquire Nissan- or Renault-sourced vehicles to add to its product line, as the Alliance is in jeopardy and Nissan itself seeks to distance itself from the Carlos Ghosn era.

These days, Mitsubishi has nearly completed its transition to an all-SUV maker, with three distinct models and one car line serving the American consumer as well as one plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Its famed Lancer and Evo compacts are long gone as is the i-MiEV, the company’s early experiment in full electrification.

2020 Mitsubishi Product Line

For 2020, Mitsubishi has Eclipse Cross, Outlander Sport, and Outlander utility vehicles as well as the tiny Mirage, a subcompact sedan/hatchback offering. Although there is nothing remarkable about the four models, each one comes with many of the tech and safety features customers want, along with a robust warranty plan to keep customers in the fold.

Looking ahead, it appears Mitsubishi will bring back the Evolution, its top-end Lancer model, but perhaps only in Evo form. Also, the company is developing a larger utility vehicle to slot above the Outlander, although the next-generation Outlander itself will have a larger footprint. Other changes include electrifying the entire lineup, which means PHEV and pure EV variants of every model should be offered.

In all, Mitsubishi is exactly where the company wants to be at this point, with new products on the way. That Mitsubishi has managed to survive in a highly competitive market is quite a feat. We’ll see what the next chapter brings and whether the story continues to unfold positively for this Japanese brand

LA Auto Show: 2015 Sneak Peak

October 21, 2015 by admin 2 Comments

The Los Angeles Auto Show opens in about a month, the first of four huge auto shows on tap in North America for the 2015-2016 show season.

The show’s timing — just before Thanksgiving — and the California location of the venue, provide an ideal setting for car manufacturers to unveil their latest offerings and concept vehicles.

Infiniti QX30 Concept.

2015 LA Auto Show

At least 50 debuts will take place in Los Angeles, including global debuts from Ford, Porsche, Scion, and Land Rover. Several manufacturers will also provide North American debuts, meaning these models have already appeared elsewhere in the world.

The LA Auto Show typically features vehicles that meet the so-called “green” criteria, including numerous alternate-fuel models. That doesn’t mean SUVs, sports cars and other less-efficient models are not showcased. It does mean that the venue serves as an ideal backdrop for presenting the annual “Green Car of the Year” award from Green Car Journal.

Among the manufacturer big reveals set for next month include the following:

Nissan Sentra — The compact segment is led by the Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic, with models such as the Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze, and the Hyundai Elantra also making an impact. The Nissan Sentra is yet another model, with the current generation model introduced in 2013. That means a mid-cycle refresh is due and it should be a significant one. Nissan is gaining market share and has been doing so by refreshing or replacing its core products at a rapid pace. No particulars have been shared about the new model, but its look should align it closer to the refreshed-for-2016 Nissan Altima.

Buick LaCrosse — GM’s premium brand is gaining new product, including the Opel-suppled Cascada convertible. Moreover, the flagship LaCrosse will be all new for 2017 when it goes on sale next year. Buick has selected Los Angeles as the venue to introduce a model that we already know will take its styling cues from the delicious Avenir concept. Just how far Buick goes with porting those design features isn’t yet known. Nor do we know what technologies and trims will accompany the new model.

Mitsubishi Duo — The smallest of all Japanese automakers with a presence left in the United States is Mitsubishi. Its sales are up significantly this year after multiple year-over-year declines. That doesn’t mean Mitsubishi’s road ahead is assured. Indeed, the automaker’s survival is tenuous at best. Nevertheless, Mitsubishi will reveal two models in LA — an all-new Outlander Sport crossover and a refreshed Mirage, the latter its subcompact model. Mitsubishi is coming off of a refresh of its compact Lancer minus its Evo and Ralliart editions, which have been discontinued.

Infiniti QX30 — Infiniti with the help of Mercedes-Benz, is exploring the bottom of the luxury segment with both a Q30 hatchback and an QX30 utility vehicle. The SUV will be introduced next month and should give further clarity on what Nissan’s luxury brand has in store for us from 2017 on.

Scion Concept SUV — About a year ago, it appeared that Toyota would kill its youth-oriented Scion division. Instead, Toyota killed the iQ and xB models and brought to the market two new models: the iA sedan and the iM hatchback. Yet another model will make its debut in California, reportedly a small crossover based on the C-HR concept. So, instead of an SUV slotting beneath the Toyota RAV4, the mono spec model will wear a Scion badge.

Los Angeles Debuts

Among the other debuts that have come to the attention of Auto Trends include the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport, Jaguar’s F-PACE SUV, and the updated Kia Sportage. Other manufacturers such as Ford, Volkswagen, and Mazda will showcase new models too, but that information has yet to be revealed. Lastly, Elio Motors is expected to follow its New York auto show debut last April with an appearance in Los Angeles. Three-wheeled conveyance, anyone?

Fuel Economy Changes for Select 2014 Models

September 26, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

Corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) represents the fleet average for automotive manufacturers nationwide. The federal government has mandated that automakers reach a 54.5 mpg threshold by 2025 with incremental increases between now and then.

To obtain ever higher fuel economy numbers, car manufacturers are downsizing models, shifting from heavier body-on-frame to lighter unibody construction, making use of smaller engines and adding a few extra gears to transmissions. Lighter weight materials, such as carbon fiber and aluminum are also being added, making it possible for cars to achieve higher year-over-year fuel economy numbers.

For the 2014 model year several vehicles are offering improved fuel economy over earlier models. Sometimes the changes are more profound as in a generational product change to more subtle changes made to engine performance.

2014 Toyota Corolla fuel economy.

2014 Toyota Corolla.

Toyota Corolla

The best selling vehicle in the world is the Toyota Corolla although some contend that the Ford Focus now outsell’s this iconic compact car. For 2014 the Corolla is all-new with a fresh face and a slightly longer wheelbase.

While the Corolla comes in a bit larger, it also is more efficient. The base 1.8-liter four cylinder engine returns and is now available with an optional “Eco” mode. As outfitted, this model is rated 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway, up from its previous 27 mpg around town and 34 mpg on the highway. This engine is now paired with a continuously variable transmission.

Chevrolet Malibu

Chevrolet has gotten clobbered in the midsize sedan segment despite serving up an all-new model for 2013. Its design has been criticized for not being bold enough, forcing GM to hasten its mid-cycle refresh by several years.

The refreshed Malibu now comes standard equipped with smart-stop technology what shuts off the engine when it is at idle such as at a traffic light. That move raises its fuel economy to 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, up from 22 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway for the 2013 edition.

2014 Mazda6 fuel economy.

2014 Mazda6.

Mazda6

The 2014 Mazda6 has been on the market for some time now. It is an all-new model employing the brand’s SKYACTIV technologies (i.e., more fuel efficient engines and transmissions, lighter weight materials) to deliver a much more fuel efficient model.

Powered by a 2.5-liter four cylinder engine paired with a semiautomatic six-speed transmission, Mazda’s midsize sedan is rated as high as 28 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. To achieve its segment leading numbers, customers will need to choose the top-of-the-line Grand Touring 2.5L with an automatic transmission and technology package. It represents a huge jump in fuel economy for a vehicle previously rated no better than 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

GMC Sierra

At first glance, the three engines found in the 2014 GMC Sierra and sister Chevrolet Silverado seem to be the same as those offered in 2013 and earlier years. However, all three are now third generation engines, sporting the EcoTec3 label. The new engines feature several changes including what is most apparent on the 5.3-liter V-8: cylinder deactivation, variable valve timing and direct injection.

The rear-wheel drive GMC Sierra equipped with the small block V-8 is now rated at 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. That is up from 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway in 2013. Importantly, the Sierra and Silverado beats competing models from Ford and Ram including Ford’s available V-6 EcoBoost engine.

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage fuel economy.

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage.

Mitsubishi Mirage

The Mitsubishi Mirage gets an honorable mention here. Because the model is all new and does not replace a previously offered vehicle, you cannot compare it with itself. The Mirage name is not new — it was used on a compact car in the 1990s and the new model is a subcompact.

Choose a 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage and pair its 1.2-liter four cylinder engine with a continuously variable transmission and your vehicle is rated at 37 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway. That is best for a small car that is neither a hybrid nor a diesel. Mitsubishi credits a 0.28 coefficient of drag, variable valve engine timing and electronic power steering in helping the Mirage achieve its lofty mpg threshold.

Fuel Economy Considerations

If you were to survey the entire automotive industry over the past several years it is apparent that car manufacturers have been making incremental changes year over year. Expect to see more diesel-powered cars, hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles enter the mix in a bid to raise CAFE. Most consumers, however, will continue to buy conventionally powered vehicles, but those models will come in lighter and more efficient than the ones currently available.

Seeing is Believing: 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage

March 29, 2013 by admin 3 Comments

Something odd has happened along Mitsubishis supposed exit from the US new car market: it has updated its Outlander crossover SUV, has shown us a PHEV version of the same and this Japanese car manufacturer just introduced an all-new Mitsubishi Mirage at the New York International Auto Show. Perhaps rumors of Mitsubishis demise have been exaggerated after all.

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage
The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage makes its global debut.

The newest model, however, does not guarantee Mitsubishis success in the ultra-competitive domestic market. Indeed, it will take a lot more than an all-new Mitsubishi Mirage to stem the brand’s losses. In 2012, its sales fell by more than 20 percent in a market that grew by about 14 percent. Just 57,790 vehicles were sold reports Bloomberg Businessweek, far below the 345,000 Mitsubishi models driven off of dealer lots in 2002.

Subcompact Car Segment

The front-wheel-drive Mitsubishi Mirage is a five-door hatchback with room for five. Mitsubishi promises to serve up the most efficient model in the subcompact car segment, delivering a projected 37 mpg around the city and 44 mpg on the highway for a combined 40 mpg.

Those fuel economy numbers are better than what its competitors now offer including the Volkswagen Golf TDI. Cars such as the Chevy Sonic, Ford Fiesta, Mazda2, Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit and Nissan Versa will have to play catch up, with tiny Mitsubishi now setting pace. Who would have thunk?!

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage gains a mileage edge by serving up a 1.2-liter three cylinder engine. Thats the type of motor offered in mini cars such as the Smart Fortwo, an engine that makes 74 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 74 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. You can pair this engine with a five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission.

Standard equipment includes a tilt steering wheel, power windows, power door locks, automatic climate control, power side mirrors, keyless entry, a rear spoiler, a four-speaker audio system and a 60/40 split rear seat.

When upgrading from the Mitsubishi Mirage DE to the Mirage ES, a number of amenities are added including front fog lamps, 14-inch aluminum alloy wheels, a proximity key, push button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity and cruise control.

Various packages will be offered including trim upgrades, a navigation system and rear parking assist.

Pricing will be announced before the model’s fall 2013 release.

Generous Safety Features

Mitsubishi will outfit every Mirage model with a host of standard safety features. Seven airbags including a drivers knee airbag a tire pressure monitoring system, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist are standard. In CVT-equipped models, hill start assist is added. Other safety features include stability control and traction control.

The hatchbacks handling benefits from electric power steering, what Mitsubishi says aids fuel efficiency. EPS also gives the driver a communicative steering feel and sharp 15.1 feet turning radius the best in its segment.

Mitsubishi Mirage Warranties

All 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage models will be backed by a 10-year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. A new vehicle limited warranty has you covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Rust protection coverage and a roadside assistance plan are also provided.
