About Lucid Motors

January 28, 2020 by admin 4 Comments

Lucid Air Prototype.

Lucid Motors isn’t a household name, but if this Newark, California-based mobility company has its way, that’ll soon change. And soon cannot come quickly enough for the company, founded in 2007, as it plans to debut its first model at the New York International Auto Show in April 2020.

Long Range, Immense Power

Officially known as Lucid Motors USA, Inc., this upstart automaker is situated in the heart of the Silicon Valley. The company essentially operated undercover for several years, revealing its first model in December 2016. Known as the Lucid Air, this all-electric sedan sports a pair of AC induction motors, which generate a combined 1,000 horsepower. Yes, you read that right: one thousand pounds of forward thrust!

Importantly, Lucid says the planned vehicle has a 400-mile range. That places the Lucid Air in unique territory and effectively removes range anxiety for nearly everyone.

The available Executive Seat Package is a must!

From Atieva to Lucid

The company’s long road to an official unveiling of a production model comes to an end at the New York show this spring. That follows years of development and capitalization, including important backing from a Saudi Arabia public trust fund. The company also underwent a name change, exchanging Atieva for Lucid in October 2016. Initially a battery maker, Lucid Motors’ current mission coincides with the name change.

Batteries remain an important part of what the Lucid Air is all about, thus the company will supply its own batteries for the sedan. For the last two seasons, Lucid batteries have powered all Formula E Season race teams. Notably, Lucid is both the designer and manufacturer for every participating race car.

A tablet-sized interface dominates the lower section of the center console.

Made in Arizona

Unlike Tesla, Lucid Motors will not build its electric vehicles in California. Instead, the company is constructing a plant in Casa Grande, Arizona, located halfway between Phoenix and Tucson.

Construction began in December with the first phase expected to be complete by the end of this year. Production of the new sedan should begin early next year with a modest 15,000 units projected for the 2021 calendar year.

Price Point and Amenities

Eventually, annual output could reach 100,000 vehicles, but we’re talking about a sedan with a top price point somewhere above $100,000. By then, Lucid may have another model or two in the mix, perhaps following Tesla by offering a mass-production sedan for about half the price. Also, there is some debate about whether a shorter range and one electric motor version will be offered from the onset. If so, we’re looking at a sedan with a far lower price point, but perhaps not much lower than the Tesla Model S.

Most of the other details about the sedan will emerge in New York. However, reports indicate that full LED lighting, alloy wheels, a leather interior, power front seats, heated seats, and an infotainment system with an oversized screen are on the docket. Other available features include a premium audio system, panoramic sunroof, an executive seat package, and an active suspension system.

Does the Lucid Air remind you of a competing model?

Looking Ahead

Of course, we’ll be following the Lucid Air’s debut in New York this spring and will share additional information about this sedan and the company. We’ll get clarity on a few things, including battery offerings, equipment levels, and perhaps price.

What’s especially interesting about Lucid Motors is that the company employed a stealth mode early on, just like Rivian. But Rivian has attracted far deeper and wider backing from a host of companies, including Amazon and the Ford Motor Company. Then again, Rivian’s first two models are a pickup truck and an SUV, vehicles in far greater demand than sedans these days. They’ll find their way in many fleets and the skateboard platform will also be used to power an upcoming Ford electric truck.

Highlights of the 2019 New York International Auto Show

April 20, 2019 by admin

The auto industry takes to New York to showcase its very best.

The Big Apple lives up to its name with every major event done in a spectacular way. Fashion Week, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and New Year’s Eve in Times Square are among the annual occurrences that keep New York City on the world stage.

The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) is yet another annual celebration and is especially noteworthy because it is both the oldest show of its kind in the U.S. and it unofficially closes the auto show season in North America. Indeed, beginning with Los Angeles in November, and extending to Detroit in January, Chicago in February and New York in early spring, we’re treated to a succession of new vehicle introductions. That’ll change next year when the Detroit show moves to June, but it may have little impact on what automakers show in Manhattan.

The 2019 NYIAS

The 2019 NYIAS is now open and showcases more than 1,000 vehicles at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan through April 28. The following are among the highlights of this year’s show, new vehicles worth checking out.

1. Lincoln Corsair. Ford’s luxury brand continues to ditch its forgettable naming convention for standard names. The previous MKC, a compact SUV, is giving way to the all-new Lincoln Corsair. The new model may share its underpinnings with the Ford Escape, but its sheet metal and interior are all its own, much in the vein where the Toyota RAV4 and Lexus NX share the same platform. The new Corsair comes with a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or an available turbocharged 2.3-liter engine, the same as the Ford Mustang. Technology is at the forefront of this model, with such features as a power liftgate, adaptive cruise control, and a lovely Revel audio system available.

2. Genesis Mint Concept. We’ve expected Hyundai’s luxury brand to branch out beyond sedans and utility vehicles for some time. The marque’s first SUV goes on sale later this year with two others to follow. Once Genesis has its three sedans and three SUVs in place, we should see its first electric vehicle roll out. It may very well derive its look from the Mint Concept, a gorgeous coupe with scissor-style rear doors. Genesis pegs its range at just over 200 miles, which is average for the segment, but below that of the competing Tesla Model 3.

3. Cadillac CT5. Just as Lincoln drives away from its nomenclature, Cadillac embraces its own. That’s especially evident in the Cadillac CT5, a small luxury sedan and the replacement model for the previous ATS. You’ll find either a twin-scroll turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a potent twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine, with each paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Standard rear-wheel drive, available all-wheel drive, a 10-inch color display, and advanced driver assist technologies to punctuate this model, which goes on sale in the fall.

Top: Volkswagen Tarok Concept. Left: Toyota Highlander. Right: Hyundai Sonata.

4. Volkswagen Tarok Concept. Volkswagen doesn’t have a pickup truck presence in the U.S. market and that’s something this German automaker wants to rectify. How they’ll get it done isn’t clear with the midsize Amarok available in many markets, while the Tarok Concept takes center stage at the NYIAS. The Tarok reminds us that Volkswagen can easily take one of its small cars and transform it into a truck-like vehicle, much like they did with the Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup in the early 1980s. The concept has a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel drive. Its flip down rear seat supplies access to the truck bed, a style reminiscent of the Chevrolet Avalanche. Ford may supply VW with a truck, as the two automakers forge some type of alliance. But we think the Tarok or something like it will roll out, perhaps relaunching the small pickup market that was prevalent in the 1980s.

5. Hyundai Sonata. The Hyundai Sonata is a midsize sedan in a segment that has been steadily shrinking as the onslaught of crossovers builds. Although Chrysler, Ford and possibly Chevrolet are abandoning the segment, Hyundai doubles down with an all-new 2020 Sonata. Its fetching looks are apparent right up front as the LED accent lights run part way up the hood. It represents a strong response to critics who pilloried Hyundai for the perceived blandness of the outgoing model. Standard under the hood is a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. We expect a hybrid variant to follow.

6. Toyota Highlander. We can’t get enough of three-row crossover utility vehicles, which is why the 2020 Highlander is so important to Toyota. Especially in the face of new and very stiff competition in the form of the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride. The all-new Highlander features a more athletic look, standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, V6 or hybrid powertrains, and a 12.3-inch color display. Speaking of the hybrid, Toyota claims a 17-percent boost in fuel efficiency. That’ll give this model an important edge in the market.

Rivian
Upstart automaker Rivian presents two models in New York.

Best of the Rest

Many more manufacturers rolled out new models and a few concepts to boot at the 2019 NYIAS. An all-new Toyota Yaris joins the Highlander on Toyota’s stage, a model based on the Mazda2. Hyundai is showcasing its all-new Venue crossover, while Nissan has a new Versa sedan. As for the Versa Note, we believe this hatchback won’t be back.

One manufacturer with plenty to show in New York is Mercedes-Benz. The German luxury marque has both the standard and sporty versions of its small CLA35 sedan on hand along with the GLC Coupe and the GLS-Class SUV. You’ll also find models from new manufacturers, including Karlmann King, Mullen Technologies, and Rivian.

In all, New York has something for everyone with present and future technologies evident as well. The show is open on Easter Sunday.

9 Bright Stars at the 2016 New York International Auto Show

March 24, 2016 by admin 2 Comments

What’s shining at the 2016 NY International Auto Show? We take a look at nine of the top models.

The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) was founded in 1900 and is one of the largest and most exceptional expos of its kind in North America, indeed in the entire world. Always held near Easter, the NYIAS presents numerous new and concept vehicles. For the 30th consecutive year the 2016 NYIAS will be presented at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan, where visitors will find the brightest stars from manufacturers the world over.

2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR Convertible
2017 Jaguar F-TYPE SVR Convertible.

1. Jaguar F-TYPE SVR

All right, the Jaguar F-TYPE SVR has already made its global debut, taking a bow at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. The New York unveil will only underscore what we already know about Jaguar’s fastest model to date. Definitely, it is worth reviewing some of the more meaningful details.

The big news about the all-wheel drive F-TYPE SVR is its speed. Specifically, this model is slated to go from 0-to-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds thanks to its marvelous 5.0-liter, supercharged V-8 engine. The hot cat’s engine makes 575 horsepower and 516 foot-pounds of torque and comes paired with an 8-speed Quickshift transmission.

To reach its optimum performance rating, Jaguar shaved the SVR’s weight by 55 pounds over the F-TYPE R. Further, enhancements such as enlarged air intakes on the front bumper, combined with revised charge air coolers and revamped hood vents have been incorporated. Other modifications extend to the exhaust system, wider tires, and refinements to the rear electronic active differential. In all, the SVR will set you back by $125,950 for the coupe and $128,800 for the convertible.

2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack
2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack.

2. Volkswagen Golf Alltrack

Do you remember the Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen? For 2016, Volkswagen shuffled its model line up, sending the compact SportWagen to its subcompact Golf line. Oddly, the latest portrayal is slightly larger than the outgoing model. Go figure.

A new addition to the Golf family arrives in autumn when the Golf Alltrack debuts. Based on the SportWagen’s architecture, the Alltrack brings in all-wheel drive, essentially giving Volkswagen a subcompact SUV in the market. In addition to the Alltrack, models in this segment include the Honda HR-V, Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-3 and the Chevrolet Trax.

The Alltrack is powered by a 170-horsepower four-cylinder gasoline engine making 199 foot-pounds of torque. Customers will have a choice of a standard six-speed manual gearbox or the available six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Haldex-supplied all-wheel drive system shifts up to 50 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. Importantly, with an inch higher road clearance than the SportWagen, the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is designed to handle light-duty off roading with ease.

2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1
2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

3. Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

If the Camaro SS isn’t enough for you, then the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is worth a look. Just as the SS mimics the standard Corvette Stingray in power, the 2017 Camaro ZL1 parallels the Corvette Z06, by offering a 6.2-liter, supercharged V-8 engine making 640 horsepower and 640 foot-pounds of torque. That figure betters the previous ZL1’s performance, what came in at 580 horsepower and 556 foot-pounds of torque.

The standard transmission is a 6-speed rev-match manual gearbox. Also available is an all-new 10-speed automatic transmission. The top-end Camaro will be the first of eight GM products to get the new-fangled slush box.

The 2017 Camaro ZL1 will ride on 20-inch forged alloy wheels set within Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires composed of a special composite made just for the Camaro. Brembo six-piston calipers with two-piece rotors, a specially-tuned version of GM’s famous Magnetic Ride Control dampers, an electronic limited-slip differential, and a track-focused performance traction management system are among the other highlights of this model.

2017 Mazda MX-5 RF
2017 Mazda MX-5 RF.

4. Mazda MX-5 RF

How do you prepare an encore for the Mazda Miata MX-5? You do so very carefully. Certainly, plaudits are due for a roadster that has long captured the hearts of people around the world. The follow up is another heart pounder, an MX-5 RF or “retractable fastback” model featuring a foldable, hard-top roof.

The newest Miata advances fastback styling with a smooth, sloping roofline. The multi-part roof opens and closes at the push of a button and does so while moving, although at speeds up to 6.2 mph. When the roof is down, it neatly folds into the trunk of the coupe. What’s left is a beautiful targa-style expression, unlike anything else in this category.

Colors are very important to the new model and were added in an effort to highlight the coupe’s sleek design. For example, the pictured Machine Grey patina accentuates the composition, serving as a full-toned element of the body’s form. In this case, Mazda made use of a high-quality finish incorporating a three-coat paint order composed of color, reflective and clear coats.

2017 Nissan GT-R
2017 Nissan GT-R.

5. Nissan GT-R

Godzilla is getting a refresh. And most critics will say, “its about time.” Indeed, although Nissan’s six-figure sports car has had constant tweaks since its 2009 debut, a more comprehensive metamorphosis hasn’t happened. Until now.

The latest update is designed to keep Nissan GT-R faithful engaged until 2018 when the next-generation (R36) model arrives. That vehicle is rumored to have a hybrid powertrain — no worries, the supposed “greening of Godzilla” won’t come at the expense of performance.

For 2017, the changes are represented by a nip here and a tuck there, with a modified v-motion grille present to enhance engine cooling. A new hood with pronounced character lines and four new patinas are available. Inside, new Nappa leather, paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel, and 8-inch capacitive touch screen are included. The latest model now makes 565 horsepower and benefits from a titanium exhaust system. A greater use of sound deadening materials is also employed.

2017 Hyundai Ioniq
2017 Hyundai Ioniq.

6. Hyundai Ioniq

Some may think it is a bit ironic that the Hyundai Ioniq is making its debut at the New York International Auto Show. After all, it is the Los Angeles Auto Show that has been deemed by some as the most green-friendly of them all. Let’s just say that the Ioniq wasn’t all set for its North American debut before the NY show, but unquestionably it is ready now.

Ioniq is to Hyundai what the Prius is to Toyota. That means this emerging line of standard and plug-in-hybrid electric vehicles should elevate Hyundai into the upper stratosphere of all things electrified vehicle.

The new model will make its North American debut this fall. When it is officially certified by the EPA, it is expected to deliver upwards of a combined 56 mpg, easily beating the Prius. Furthermore, a third variant, an electric-only model, is expected to deliver 110 miles of range, three miles longer the Nissan Leaf.

2017 Subaru Impreza
2017 Subaru Impreza.

7. Subaru Impreza

In 2015, Subaru separated its WRX line from Impreza, although that decoupling was accomplished in naming conventions mostly. For 2017, the chasm between the two widens as the next-generation Impreza inaugurates Subaru’s all-new modular architecture set to underpin new Outback, Forester and Crosstrek models. Indeed, the next-generation WRX will eventually share this platform.

Introduced in 1993, the 2017 Subaru Impreza marks the fifth generation for this compact sedan, a model that competes against the likes of the Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, Honda Civic, and the Chevrolet Cruze. The latest model comes in sedan and hatchback body styles, the latter very uncommon to the segment.

The fifth-generation Subaru Impreza comes in slightly longer and wider than the outgoing model, offering a roomier interior and improved visibility. All-wheel drive is standard and a 2.0-liter, BOXER four-cylinder engine now makes 152 horsepower and comes paired with a continuously variable transmission. New driver-assist technologies, including reverse automatic braking is available. All models are equipped with a rear vision camera.

2017 Chevrolet Sonic
2017 Chevrolet Sonic.

8. Chevrolet Sonic

Introduced in 2012, the Chevrolet Sonic gets a refresh for 2017. An all-new model will have to wait a few more years as car buyers are currently looking at SUVs in greater numbers and much less so at small cars. Nonetheless, an update is in order and a freshened model is now on display in New York.

As before, the Sonic is sold in sedan and hatchback body styles. For 2017, this model receives fresh grille, new LED signature lighting, along with available LED daytime running lights. New wheel designs and four new exterior colors highlight the exterior changes.

Inside, the changes include the segment’s first available power driver’s seat. Other new features include keyless open and start, available heated cloth seats with a new heated steering wheel, and an all-new 7-inch infotainment system display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come to the 2017 Sonic; also available is 4G LTE with a WiFi hotspot.

2017 Toyota Highlander
2017 Toyota Highlander.

9. Toyota Highlander

Toyota launched the three-row crossover SUV segment in 2001 when it introduced the Highlander. Offering room for eight, the Highlander is a logical alternative to the similar-sized Toyota Sienna minivan.

The third-generation Toyota Highlander was released in 2014, thus the latest update represents a mid product cycle update. This means it will be a few more years before we see the next generation model, therefore a refreshed motif will hold sway until then.

Tweaks to the front and rear fascia are evident, including new upper and lower grille finishes. Also new for 2017 is an SE edition, the sportiest Highlander model yet. Dark black fascia highlights, a sport-tuned suspension, and a record five USB ports across the model line are among the chief changes. However, the biggest change is found in the transmission as an eight-speed automatic replaces the previous six-speed, effectively improving fuel economy for this best-selling SUV.

Best of the Rest

Other models to examine in New York include the Toyota Prius Prime, a roomier take on the current Prius PHEV. The latest hybrid model advances Mirai styling cues and has an electric-only range of 22 miles.

The Lincoln Navigator concept looks like a good bet for the next generation of this beefy, luxury SUV. However, the model on display has gull-wing doors and those won’t go into production. What we can expect is the twin-turbo V-6 engine powering the upcoming Continental and a raft of features to advance this model’s “quiet luxury” approach to the market.

Further, give Audi props for a thoroughly delicious R8 Spyder, to Kia for refreshing its Cadenza sedan, and to Mercedes-Benz for the plunging design pattern dressing the 2017 GLC Coupe. All three models will enhance their respective brands, bringing a fresh touch to the industry.

2016 New York International Auto Show

To sum up, the 2016 New York International Auto Show offers something for everyone. This year’s show runs from March 25 to April 3, 2016, and includes special events each day. Indeed, those events and special displays range from a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 Truck to Camp Jeep and beyond, with the streets of Manhattan beckoning from without and offering a variety of additional enticements for visitors.

Lincoln-Bentley Squabble Makes for Good Theater

April 7, 2015 by admin 1 Comment

The Lincoln Continental Concept is a rip off of a Bentley sedan or at least that is the contention of one Volkswagen Group designer. Styling cues aside, the two models are far different. But that isn’t stopping people from noticing similarities that some find a little to close for comfort.

Bentley Fracas

Bring your popcorn and a drink, pull up a chair and take in the confabulation regarding the Lincoln Continental Concept and the Bentley marque. That conversation follows a fracas that began when Bentley’s designer, Luc Donckerwolke, left a comment on David Woodhouse’s Facebook page, effectively chastising Lincoln’s chief designer (and the architect behind the concept Continental) for copying the ultra-luxury automaker’s design.

“Do you want us to send the product tooling?,” was the comment left by Donckerwolke in response to the official unveiling of the Lincoln Continental Concept at the 2015 New York International Auto Show last week. That comment, since deleted from Woodhouse’s timeline, might have been ignored if anyone else had made it. But Donckerwolke is known both for his design flair as well as his outspokenness, a rare combination among automotive designers.

The Bentley Flying Spur.
The Bentley Flying Spur.

From Lamborghini to SEAT

Indeed, Donckerwolke is the designer behind the delicious Lamborghini Murcielago, the successor to the Diablo and the flagship model in the Lambo line. The Murcielago has received accolades from across the automotive and design spectrums, garnering the prestigious Red Dot Design Award among others. As for Donckerwolke, he has headed Lamborghini design since 1998 and will move to SEAT later this year. Bentley, Lamborghini and SEAT are Volkswagen Group companies. Not bad for a 40-year-old!

So, what is it about the Lincoln Continental Concept that angers Donckerwolke? Certainly, several things. In a bid to clarify his Facebook comment, Car & Driver tracked down Donckerwolke at Bentley’s pop-up studio in New York to find out what it was that disturbed the designer the most. It turns out the designer respects Lincoln, but criticizes the brand for “using cues” from Bentley.

Those cues include the haunch or what represents the side of an arch in an automobile. Furthermore, he sees the concept’s power vent located in the same position as Bentley and took note of various creases, shoulder lines and other exceptional characteristics that were similarly placed in the Lincoln. Notably, he did not point out the similarities in the grille, what others say resembles Bentley.

The Lincoln Continental Concept.
The Lincoln Continental Concept.

From Lincoln Continental Concept to Reality

Lincoln is intent on bringing the 2017 Continental to the market and the concept most likely is closer to what the final copy will look like. It is doubtful that the design will change much between now and the official reveal, likely to take place in Los Angeles in November or in Detroit next January.

As much as Donckerwolke criticizes the alleged “theft” of a styling intimation, it isn’t the first time that a commotion has occurred following a vehicle’s debut. In fact, Lincoln’s parent, Ford, recently weathered criticism following the current Fusion’s launch, with some critics pointing out the similarities between the Aston Martin’s fascia and the Fusion’s front end. Incidentally, Aston Martin was owned by Ford from 1994 to 2007; the Dearborn company still has an 8 percent stake in this English marque.

If you look back decades, you can see similar design patterns emerging and appearing across a variety of model lines. To be sure, Cadillac had the biggest fins of the late 1950s and early 1960s, but other manufacturers had their own fins and swaths of chrome across the body lines, bumpers and elsewhere.

Beginning in the late 1960s, American Motors’ models had a visage that resembled what Chrysler was producing at the time. To be sure, the AMC Matador borrowed styling cues from the Dodge Dart, but no one seemed to mind. The Chrysler Corporation in the Dodge Omni and Plymouth Horizon layouts copied the Volkswagen Rabbit, but that wedge design appeared in various competing models around the world too.

Good Theater in a Competitive Industry

What the current dust-up comes down to is that comments such as those made by Donckerwolke make for good theater. Likely, little more will come from it, especially as Bentley and Lincoln serve two different markets — Bentley the uber rich and Lincoln well-heeled consumers, typically upper-middle-class car shoppers.

Scion is Back With Two New Models to Show For It

April 6, 2015 by admin 3 Comments

2016 Scion iA.
The 2016 Scion iA.

Scion never went away. But for many enthusiasts and analysts, the brand’s best days in its too-short history can be seen in the rear view mirror.

Two New York Presentations

However, Toyota Motors has other plans for the Toyota sub-brand, launched in 2004 to appeal to young, urban buyers for the most part. At the 2015 New York International Auto Show, Scion unveiled not one, but two new models. Notably, both models target the same customer demographic this brand has always reached.

A double vehicle debut and launch is a rarity in this business, where new reveals are carefully orchestrated and unveiled, usually months apart. Perhaps sensing the urgency of these times, Toyota chose to reveal the subcompact iA sedan and the compact iM hatchback concurrently, with both models going on sale this fall.

Scion is technically a Toyota sub-brand, with those models sold at most Toyota dealerships across the nation. Initially, every Toyota dealer carried Scion, but a few years ago Toyota gave them the option to not carry Scion.

Toyota hasn’t made known the number of dealers that took them up on that offer and they haven’t said if those same dealers will be allowed or required to carry Scion products moving forward. For some dealers, Scion sales have been abysmal with limited showroom space taxing resources.

2016 Scion iM.
The 2016 Scion iM.

2016 Scion iA Subcompact

The Scion iA is the low-price leader for the brand and will replace the poor performing mini iQ after this model year. With a competitive price point of about $16,000, the tiny sedan should appeal to first-time car buyers as well as to families in need of a second vehicle.

The iA has several things going for it, including an estimated 42 mpg highway rating and a standard low-speed “pre collision” system. That system is designed to help mitigate crashes with sonars used to detect the risk of a rear-end collision with a vehicle immediately in front of it. Specifically, as the driver applies the brakes, the system doubles the brake force pressure. And if braking is not applied, automatic deceleration takes place.

The 2016 Scion iA is borne out of a partnership between Toyota and Mazda, with the latter building the iA at an assembly plant in Mexico. Thus, the Scion iA is a twin with the Mazda 2, itself a successful subcompact model as well as a competitor to the Toyota Yaris.

Under the hood of the iA is a 106-horsepower, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. It will be paired with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. This model will come equipped with a chrome grille surround and tail pipe, 16-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry with push button start, and a tilt and telescopic steering column.

2016 Scion iM Compact

The Scion iM is an internal project and appears to be based on the platform underpinning the Toyota Corolla. The hatchback will be priced from under $20,000, a critical price point for young buyers. Unlike the iA with its gaping grille, the iM aligns closer to the Scion look with its hexagon lower grille. Furthermore, it will come equipped with distinctive headlights and side bezels, 17-inch alloy wheels, power folding side mirrors, and LED daytime running lights and LED tail lights.

Inside, this model will provide a 7-inch color display for audio functions, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, and a rear view camera. Furthermore, eight airbags, including a driver’s knee air bag and a front passenger seat cushion airbag are standard.

Under the hood is a familiar 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine making 137 horsepower. This engine will come paired with a gearless continuously variable automatic transmission that can be operated in manual mode, with seven “steps” mimicking gear points. A six-speed manual transmission will also be available.

Second Chance Scion

With two new models on deck, Toyota is breathing new life into Scion. Just as easily, the automaker could have cut its losses and moved on, but apparently it sees much potential in a brand that sold more than 170,000 units in its peak year, 2006. Sales last year came in at 58,009 units, down more than 15 percent in a market that registered a 5.9 percent increase for the year.

Eight is Enough: Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

April 3, 2015 by admin 4 Comments

Even as some manufacturers struggle to field one or two hybrid (gas-electric) vehicles, Toyota continues to expand its offerings. At the 2015 New York International Auto Show on Thursday, Toyota took the wraps off of the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, what represents the eighth hybrid model in its ever-expanding product line.

2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

Toyota’s timing may seem off, especially as gas prices remain low and may stay down for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, the automaker believes that its hybrid offerings provide customers with a solid choice. And judging by its market dominance, little argument will be made there.

Toyota introduces the RAV4 Hybrid in New York.

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid will enter the market this fall. Of the hybrid, Toyota says that it “will be targeted towards young adventure-seeking couples looking for a vehicle that provides utility, versatility, capability and excellent fuel efficiency.”

Two trim levels will be offered: XLE and Limited, and both will come equipped with electronic on-demand all-wheel drive. Gasoline-powered models offer standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive.

Independent Front and Rear Electric Motors

The hybrid system consists of a 2.5-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine, independent front and rear electric motors, and a continuously variable transmission. The rear motor has been designed to deliver additional torque to the rear wheels, but only when needed and in a bid to reduce wheel spin.

For 2016, the RAV4 Hybrid ushers in an updated design for the model line. Specific to this model include LED high and low beams as well as LED daytime running lights. Additional changes can be seen across the lower rocker panel and pushing back to the rear bumper. And at the rear is a new bumper, an enhanced lift gate and refreshed tail lights.

Toyota Safety Sense

The RAV4 will also benefit from increased noise reducing materials added to the floor along with enhanced seals to make this the quietest edition yet. Also present is a larger, 7-inch color display, and available technologies to include Toyota Safety Sense and a new, Bird’s Eye Camera.

The Toyota Safety Sense is bundled to deliver the following features: a pre-collision system, forward collision warning, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, pedestrian pre-collision system, and dynamic radar cruise control. The system is standard with the RAV4 Hybrid Limited and optional with the XLE edition.

The Bird’s Eye View Monitor makes use of four cameras to provide the driver with a 360-degree view of the SUV. The cameras are mounted on the front, the side mirrors and on the rear of the vehicle, to provide a panoramic view of the surroundings. It can help drivers back into tight parking spaces and take note of obstacles, including children and small pets.

Eight is Enough

With eight hybrids in the mix, Toyota demonstrates once again its market leadership. The only vehicles not outfitted with hybrid technology are its largest utilities and pickup trucks, as well as its smallest vehicles. The former are not particularly suitable for the technology, while the smaller models are best represented through the Prius line.

Mercedes-Benz Nabs a World Car Award Hat Trick

April 2, 2015 by admin 4 Comments

The most prestigious of the annual car of the year awards is held annually in conjunction with the New York International Auto Show. The World Car Awards (WCA) is announced at the start of the second media day and is a program initiated and organized by journalists from around the world.

World Car: A Journalist-Driven Award

Unlike other awards that are affiliated with a publication, manufacturer, auto show or a commercial entity, the World Car Awards is comprised entirely of journalists from Asia, Europe and North America. Candidate vehicles must be sold on at least two continents to qualify. Thus, a few of the candidates, including finalists, may comprise vehicles not sold in the United States.

Some 75 journalists from across the globe, individuals recognized for their professionalism, compose the jurists who offer their expert opinions on the vehicles under consideration. In conjunction with the earlier Geneva Motor Show, the finalists are announced, with voting taking place before New York. KPMG tallies the votes and the winner remains sealed until the press conference.

Mercedes-Benz Excels

Citroen Cactus
This Citroen Cactus was among the award winners announced in New York.

Mercedes-Benz was the big winner this year, pulling down three of the five awards, including World Car of the Year honors for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe nabbed World Luxury Car honors and the Mercedes AMG GT took the World Performance Car award.

The Citroen C4 Cactus, a brand and a vehicle not sold in the United States, won the World Car Design of the Year award, finishing ahead of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Volvo XC90.

The World Green Car honors went to the BMW i8 with the Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-in Hybrid and the Volkswagen Golf GTE as the other finalists.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class beat out the Ford Mustang and Volkswagen’s Passat to win its award. The Mercedes Benz S-Class Coupe finished ahead of the BMW i8 and the Range Rover Autobiography Black Long Wheelbase models for World Luxury Car.

The BMW M4 Coupe/M3 Sedan and the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe were the runners up in the World Performance Car category.

New York International Auto Show

Most of the winners are on display under their respective manufacturer’s banners at the New York International Auto Show. The one exception is Citroen C4 Cactus as parent PSA Peugeot Citroën no longer has a presence in the American consumer market.

Next Generation Kia Optima Bows in New York

April 2, 2015 by admin 9 Comments

Five years after releasing its most advanced Optima midsize sedan yet, Kia is not resting on its laurels. Indeed, the Korean automaker has moved the Optima forward a full generation, by presenting a new design with European styling, an updated premium cabin, and improved ride and handling.

2016 Kia Optima

The front-wheel drive, five-passenger Kia Optima has steadily been making inroads within the ultra-competitive midsize segment, even as its chief competitors release new and updated models as well. The Toyota Camry remains the segment’s top seller, with models from Nissan, Ford, Honda, and Hyundai also making a statement.

2016 Kia Optima

Kia says that the 2016 Optima’s chassis is longer, wider and stiffer than the outgoing model, providing improved handling for the new version. The latest edition will be built at Kia’s manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia, and will feature five trim levels, including a US-exclusive SXL. One naturally aspirated engine and two turbocharged engines will be offered.

The available 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder will come paired with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, producing 178 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 195 foot-pounds of torque at 1,500 rpm. A 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder is standard and rated at 185 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 178 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm.

Also available is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing a model leading 247 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 260 foot-pounds of torque at 1,350 rpm. These two engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting capabilities.

2016 Kia Optima

Slightly Larger Kia Optima

The 2016 Kia Optima has been extended by 0.4 inches and now sits on a 110.4-inch wheelbase. It also measures one inch wider at 73.2 inches. The changes also extend to more storage capacity in the trunk.

Notably, the new Optima borrows something from the top-of-the-line K900. Specifically, this sedan features a sinister front fascia, strong wheel well arches and sweptback headlights. The 2016 Optima also introduces bi-functional HID headlights along with available Dynamic Bending Lamps and High Beam Assist – what illuminate the road while you travel around the corners.

The Optima’s silhouette is at once familiar as it is rakish. The sharply angled A pillars return as do the bending C pillars that give this sedan its sporty character. Notched rear windows, carved rear fenders and a raised deck lid enhance this sedan’s countenance.

Buyers will be provided with standard 16-inch wheels with increasing larger wheels of up to 18 inches available. New wheel designs and exterior colors complete the exterior updates.

2016 Kia Optima

Upscale Cabin, Available Safety Features

Inside, the Optima’s cabin is replete with soft touch materials, with detailed stitching along the dashboard and doors. Metallic accents appear in upper trim level models, and buyers have a choice of cloth, leather or Nappa leather seating surfaces.

A six-speaker audio system is standard and a 14-speaker Infinity audio system is available. Various technologies are available raining from a rear camera display to a 360-degree around view monitor. Safety features available include smart cruise control, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert and autonomous emergency braking.

Sales for the 2016 Kia Optima begin in the fourth quarter of this year.

Elio Motors Presents at the New York International Auto Show

April 2, 2015 by admin 5 Comments

Elio Motors
Paul Elio addresses media at the NY auto show.

Talk about making the big time: Elio Motors, the upstart American automaker intent on bringing a three-wheel “auto cycle” to the market, made its first appearance at an auto show. And that show was none other than the 2015 New York International Auto Show, the largest and oldest automotive spectacle of its kind.

New York Press Conference

Paul Elio spoke to roughly 60 members of the press in the next to the last media conference for the show’s press days. That 27 and a half minute conference was longer than the usual press confabulation, but it allowed Mr. Elio to field and answer questions from the audience.

Elio Motors made an appearance at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. That venue provided yet another way for Elio to showcase its vehicle and to gauge consumer sentiment. According to Elio, the vast majority of people who were surveyed about a showcased product they would like to see built picked the Elio. From there, the company decided to give the New York auto show a try.

Elio Motors

Model Specifications

Paul Elio repeated the now very familiar background for building the vehicle, explaining that in 2008 he realized that he was personally tired about high fuel prices and the lack of an affordable starter vehicle for consumers locked out of the market. The initial $6,800 price tag has not changed nor have the fundamentals about this vehicle.

Indeed, what you have here is a front-wheel drive “motorcycle” with two wheels up front and one wheel to the rear. This 1+1 model is powered by a 900cc three-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. That engine makes 55 horsepower and 55 foot-pounds of torque.

The Elio will travel from 0 to 60 mph in 10 seconds and have a top speed above 100 mph. Furthermore, it will meet the required safety measures for a vehicle in its class, including one front and two side curtain airbags.

Elio Motors

Louisiana Plant and Funding Opportunities

Elio has secured a plant in Shreveport, Louisiana, to assemble the vehicle. The company has been relying on crowdsourcing to raise $280 million to date toward building the vehicle, with construction now expected to begin in the first half of 2016. However, additional funding is still needed and Elio has an application in with the U.S. Department of Energy’s ATVM Loan Program.

But the federally-backed loan is not the sole source of funding Elio is relying on. That’s a point Paul Elio made when he said that the company is “looking at a variety of funding sources” to bring the Elio to market. Earlier this month, the company announced that it had launched a 506(c) investment option to permit accredited investors the opportunity to buy into the company with a stake costing as little as $15,000.

“Whenever we take the vehicle to a public event, there are always enthusiastic fans who ask how they can invest,” said Paul Elio, founder and CEO of Elio Motors. “All along, we’ve said we are pursuing a variety of funding sources and the 2012 JOBS Act makes this one possible. Of all our investment strategies, this happens to be one of my favorites because it gives people who are passionate about our mission a chance to participate in helping us change the world.”

Elio Motors

Elio Motors: Job Opportunities

That change may come in a vehicle that gets 84 mpg or more than three times the fuel economy of today’s cars. More than 40,000 people have reservations for the Elio and once production commences, some 1,500 people will be employed to assemble the vehicle. Another 1,500 individuals will find work through a suppliers.

Although this writer has been skeptical that Elio Motors will ever bring a vehicle to market, Paul Elio’s resiliency, devotion and passion are evident. Paul Elio is not a gifted speaker, but he does communicate plainly and without the hubris that is often evident in the auto industry. Money is, of course, the main holdback but at least the engineering and technological pieces seem to have come together, an important step in securing funding.

Chevrolet Malibu is Larger, More Efficient

April 1, 2015 by admin 14 Comments

In desperate need of a segment winner, GM has replaced the Chevrolet Malibu for the 2016 model year. The new sedan will give Chevrolet a competitor in a segment led by Japanese competitors.

So how to you repair a “broken” design? You don’t: you replace it. And that is precisely what General Motors has done with the next generation Chevrolet Malibu, a midsize sedan that is longer, lighter and more efficient that the vehicle it will replace for the 2016 model year.

2016 Chevrolet Malibu

Just in advance of the start of the 2016 New York International Auto Show, Chevrolet unveiled the Malibu, a vehicle that is four inches longer and 300 pounds lighter than the one it replaces. Indeed, the extra inches will solve the main problem — lack of rear passenger room — and address another one — fuel efficiency.

Specifically, the 2016 edition, powered by a standard 1.5-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine is expected to achieve 37 mpg on the highway. Furthermore, a hybrid variant will make an estimated 48 mpg combined (city/highway), beating such segment contenders as the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Ford Fusion Hybrid and the Toyota Camry Hybrid.

“Midsize customers tell us they want great fuel economy, connected technologies, wrapped in a gorgeous exterior. This is exactly what the 2016 Malibu was engineered to do,” said Jesse Ortega, Malibu chief engineer.

Advanced Technologies and Hybrid Availability

The new sedan goes on sale in the fourth quarter of this year. It will offer a number of technologies to include OnStar 4G LTE connectivity, wireless phone technology, a teen driver alert that allows parents to monitor teen behavior while on the road.

Under the hood is an all-new, 1.5-liter Ecotec turbocharged engine. Making an estimated 160 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque, it will be come with stop/start technology, a fuel saving measure. An optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder should achieve 250 horsepower. Moreover, it will be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Chevrolet will offer the 2016 Malibu in L, LS, LT and Premier trims for both the gasoline and the hybrid models. Speaking about the hybrid, that car borrows technologies used in the Chevrolet Volt, including a two-motor drive unit. That unit will offer expanded pull to help the engine while accelerating and make a combined 182 horsepower.

Key Safety Features

Safety features will be composed of 10 standard airbags, including front-seat knee airbags. Other safety features available include: front pedestrian alert, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, side blind zone alert with lane changer, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear park assist, automatic headlamps, adaptive cruise control with front automatic braking, and automatic parking assist.

Chevrolet says that the Malibu received its styling influence from the full-size Impala sedan, itself extensively redone in 2014. The move to a fresh platform is a quick one for the Malibu, following an abbreviated three-model-year run, including a refresh.

The Chevrolet Malibu has struggled in a segment led by the Toyota Camry and also dominated by the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion. The new model should help Chevrolet move past other sedans, such as the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima. The Volkswagen Passat, Chrysler 200, Subaru Legacy and Mazda 6 also compete.
