Elio Motors Presents at the New York International Auto Show

Elio Motors
Paul Elio addresses media at the NY auto show.

Talk about making the big time: Elio Motors, the upstart American automaker intent on bringing a three-wheel “auto cycle” to the market, made its first appearance at an auto show. And that show was none other than the 2015 New York International Auto Show, the largest and oldest automotive spectacle of its kind.

New York Press Conference

Paul Elio spoke to roughly 60 members of the press in the next to the last media conference for the show’s press days. That 27 and a half minute conference was longer than the usual press confabulation, but it allowed Mr. Elio to field and answer questions from the audience.

Elio Motors made an appearance at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January. That venue provided yet another way for Elio to showcase its vehicle and to gauge consumer sentiment. According to Elio, the vast majority of people who were surveyed about a showcased product they would like to see built picked the Elio. From there, the company decided to give the New York auto show a try.

Elio Motors

Model Specifications

Paul Elio repeated the now very familiar background for building the vehicle, explaining that in 2008 he realized that he was personally tired about high fuel prices and the lack of an affordable starter vehicle for consumers locked out of the market. The initial $6,800 price tag has not changed nor have the fundamentals about this vehicle.

Indeed, what you have here is a front-wheel drive “motorcycle” with two wheels up front and one wheel to the rear. This 1+1 model is powered by a 900cc three-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. That engine makes 55 horsepower and 55 foot-pounds of torque.

The Elio will travel from 0 to 60 mph in 10 seconds and have a top speed above 100 mph. Furthermore, it will meet the required safety measures for a vehicle in its class, including one front and two side curtain airbags.

Elio Motors

Louisiana Plant and Funding Opportunities

Elio has secured a plant in Shreveport, Louisiana, to assemble the vehicle. The company has been relying on crowdsourcing to raise $280 million to date toward building the vehicle, with construction now expected to begin in the first half of 2016. However, additional funding is still needed and Elio has an application in with the U.S. Department of Energy’s ATVM Loan Program.

But the federally-backed loan is not the sole source of funding Elio is relying on. That’s a point Paul Elio made when he said that the company is “looking at a variety of funding sources” to bring the Elio to market. Earlier this month, the company announced that it had launched a 506(c) investment option to permit accredited investors the opportunity to buy into the company with a stake costing as little as $15,000.

“Whenever we take the vehicle to a public event, there are always enthusiastic fans who ask how they can invest,” said Paul Elio, founder and CEO of Elio Motors. “All along, we’ve said we are pursuing a variety of funding sources and the 2012 JOBS Act makes this one possible. Of all our investment strategies, this happens to be one of my favorites because it gives people who are passionate about our mission a chance to participate in helping us change the world.”

Elio Motors: Job Opportunities

That change may come in a vehicle that gets 84 mpg or more than three times the fuel economy of today’s cars. More than 40,000 people have reservations for the Elio and once production commences, some 1,500 people will be employed to assemble the vehicle. Another 1,500 individuals will find work through a suppliers.

Although this writer has been skeptical that Elio Motors will ever bring a vehicle to market, Paul Elio’s resiliency, devotion and passion are evident. Paul Elio is not a gifted speaker, but he does communicate plainly and without the hubris that is often evident in the auto industry. Money is, of course, the main holdback but at least the engineering and technological pieces seem to have come together, an important step in securing funding.

Elio Motors: Production Delayed Until Late 2015

May 21, 2014 by admin 3 Comments

Lack of capitalization delays the Elio dream.

Elio Motors

Paul Elio has been busy lately promoting Elio Motors, a company he founded with plans to build a $6,800 three-wheeled vehicle in Louisiana.

Following a brief appearance on Fox Friends late last month, Elio announced that Pep Boys would serve as its official service provider. Over the following weeks Elio has been busy showing off a prototype of the vehicle at venues across the country.

Elio: Production Delay

Earlier this week Elio announced that it had pushed back production until the third quarter of 2015. The company has secured a portion of a former General Motors assembly plant complex near Shreveport, Louisiana, to build the two-seater, a model it says will get 84 mpg on the highway.

Elio citied a funding delay as the reason for pushing back production. In a May 16, 2014, letter to supporters obtained by Auto Trends, Paul Elio said about the change, “This is a few months later than anticipated, with the delay tied to the evaluation of the plant as well as the timely closing of financing commitments.” He went on to explain that the company was moving forward with its plans and would apprise supporters of additional updates in the coming months.

Market Capitalization

Elio Motors has assembled a Board of Directors composed of five members: James Holden, David C. Schembri, Hari Iyer, Kenneth L. Way and Stuart Lichter, with Lichter investing $7.5 million to support the company. That funding is part of the $55 million the Shreveport Times says has been raised by Elio to date. Elio claims it will need $200 million just to get production started.

Without sufficient capital, Elio Motors simply will not move forward. That is the contention of Stephanie Lynch, a Caddo Parish Commissioner, and the lone dissenter in a 2013 11-1 commission vote approving the parish’s purchase of the property. Lynch then sued the commission to stop the purchase citing that it may have violated state law by using taxpayer dollars to benefit a for-profit enterprise reports Shreveport’s KSLA News. That lawsuit was thrown out by a judge, but Lynch’s skepticism remains.

Early Reservations Taken

Elio continues to push for early reservations, with more than 17,600 signed up as of May 14, 2014. The company provides four funding levels: $100, $250, $500 and $1,000, refundable deposits that gives people first dibs on production models based on their level of support. Those who make $1,000 deposits will also receive an additional $500 off of their purchase price.

The headwinds for bringing the Elio to market are strong and it won’t be the first attempt that a three-wheeled vehicle has been proposed.

In 2005, Aptera Motors was formed with plans to bring a two-seat, three-wheeled passenger vehicle to market. The company had plans to build both electric and hybrid versions of its vehicles, acquiring funding from Google and other investors. Production was supposed to have started in 2008, but production problems and the refusal of the Department of Energy to fund a loan quashed its plans. By summer 2011 the company had begun refunding deposits, liquidating its assets just four months later.

The Elon Musk Factor

Elio supporters point to Tesla Motors as an example of an upstart automaker that has defied the odds and remains viable. Yet, Tesla was launched when government funding was strong and its founder, Elon Musk, had SpaceX and Paypal to point to as successful early ventures. Paul Elio may have a vision, but he doesn’t have anywhere near the name recognition of a Musk. And with much funding still needed, Elio’s plans may soon fizzle.

Elio: American Made and Only $6,800?!

February 12, 2014 by admin 1 Comment

A two-seat, three-wheeler from Louisiana.

Cheaply priced cars are hard to come by and are typically imported from abroad. We’ve been waiting for years for a sub-$10,000 model from China or India, but neither country appears ready to enter the fray or at least not with a rockbottom model.

Well, lo and behold an all-new model costing just $6,800 is slated to hit the US market this year. And, instead of being built on an assembly line in a third-world country and shipped to the states, it will be built in Shreveport, Louisiana, at a manufacturing plant that had previously built GM pickup trucks.

Elio Motors

Paul Elio

Elio Motors is the company and it is named for its founder and CEO, Paul Elio. Mr. Elio is an automotive engineer who began his career at Johnson Controls after graduating from Kettering University. Later, he founded ESG Engineering, a business that takes engineering ideas, develops designs and moves them out for high volume manufacturing and assembly. The ESG Engineering team developed a three-wheeled, low-cost, ultra-high mpg prototype that is expected to become the Elio the production model slated to hit the market in early 2015.

The Elio will be powered by an inline three-cylinder 55-horsepower fuel-injected engine paired with a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. It is estimated to get 49 mpg in the city and 84 mpg on the highway. Its 8-gallon fuel tank provides a 672-mile driving range.

Warranty and Safety

Seating two people, the Elio (two wheels up front, one in the rear) will come with a three-year, 36,000-mile warranty. It is also expected to achieve the federal governments five-star crash safety rating due in part to its reinforced roll-cage frame, large crush zones, and its anti-lock braking system.

Starting production has been Elios biggest challenge, something that the company says that it will overcome with the help of Comau Inc. (COnsorzio MAcchine Utensili), an Italian company that builds advanced manufacturing systems. In the auto industry Comau is known for robotics, body welding, and powertrain systems, counting the Ford Motor Company and other OEMs as its customers. The company’s US base is in Southfield, Mich.

Automation Partner: Comau

On Tuesday, Elio announced that it chose Comau as its automation partner, providing Elio with both the powertrain and automated assembly systems required to build the new model. Comau Powertrain Systems will be used to machine and assemble the engine; Comau Body Welding Systems will provide much of the assembly including the design, build and install systems. Other Comau divisions are being considered to handle additional tasks.

“We are very pleased to be partnering with Elio Motors on the assembly of this unique three-wheel vehicle,” said Kirk Goins, COO Comau NAFTA. “Our long-standing leadership in customized automation systems for the automotive market will optimize the entire assembly process for the Elio providing energy efficient manufacturing solutions.”

“I am humbled and honored to have Comau be an important part of our project,” said Paul Elio, Founder and CEO Elio Motors. “Comau technology is used by car manufacturers all over the world and Elio Motors is fortunate to have their expertise and experience as part of our team.”

Louisiana Manufacturing Plant

The Louisiana plant is expected to employ 1,500 people when it becomes fully operational. Supplier and local jobs would naturally flow from that business. Elio has received an abatement on both its local property taxes and payroll tax, but the local Caddo Parrish declined Elio’s request to contribute $15 million to help launch the company. Elio has managed to raise $7 million privately thus far; it is unknown how much cash it will need to bring this model to production.

If you want to be one of the first people to get an Elio you can reserve one with a deposit for as little as $100. And if you think that you’re getting a bare bones, front-wheel drive model for $6,800, you may be pleasantly surprised: the Elio comes equipped with three airbags, power windows, AM/FM stereo, air conditioning, a heater, and a rear defroster.
