Will NextEV Rival Tesla Motors?

September 3, 2015 by admin 1 Comment

NextEV
From Team China Racing to production models, NextEV intends to join Tesla Motors
as a manufacturer of high-end electric cars.

It is only a matter of time before a company rivaling Tesla Motors emerges. Tesla, the envy of many, may soon have a competitor in NextEV, a Chinese company that has won key financial backing from financial investors, including Hillhouse Capital.

Hillhouse Capital is an important investor in Uber, the ride sharing service. NextEV’s other backers, which include Chinese Internet entrepreneurs, have hired Martin Leach to build the company. Leach was formerly an executive with the Ford Motor Company, serving as the company’s chief operating officer and president of the automaker’s European division until 2003. He later worked for Maserati and was also employed by the British subsidiary of the Russian automotive company, the GAZ Group. Leach is also serving as chairman of the London-based Magma Group, an automotive services company specializing in automotive intelligence.

NextEV has also been recruiting executives from other manufacturers, including Volkswagen, BMW and Tesla. The Chinese government is providing backing in a bid to create new electric car enterprises. To that end, the Chinese put forth rule changes that now permit non-automotive companies to invest in businesses such as NextEV. On Monday, Reuters identified Alibaba and Leshi as two of the companies that have announced or are considering backing NextEV.

NextEV Supercar

Like Tesla, NextEV plans to build a limited edition model initially. The high-end Tesla Roadster was limited to 2,500 units before it was discontinued. It was followed by the Tesla Model S, the model that has raised the company’s global prominence.

NextEV plans to build an electric super car, with the company claiming that it will outperform all combustion engine super cars the world over. Plans for the unnamed vehicle are well under way with the new model expected to debut in 2016.

The company claims that the super car will produce more than 1,000 horsepower and go from 0-to-100 kilometers an hour (62 mph) within 3 seconds. Following its initial model, an assortment of high-performance family cars will be built.

Chinese Investor Backing

The Chinese Internet company, Tencent, is backing the initiative in addition to Bitauto.com, an Internet content provider. Richard Liu, founder of the e-commerce site JD.com, has also thrown in his support.

Leach will serve in the capacity of co-president. Currently, he is leading recruitment efforts by looking for staff in California, China, Hong Kong, and Europe. The upstart manufacturer has already poached John Thomas, the former senior program director for Tesla Motors, and a pair of designers from BMW and Italdesign Giugiaro. Thomas, incidentally, helped bring the Tesla Model S to the market.

NextEV is not disclosing financial information and says that it will introduce its cars to the Chinese market first before moving on to other markets. No other information or timeframes have been announced.

Launching NextEV comes as the world is in the midst of an oil glut and as prices in the United States continue to fall to levels not seen in several years. Oil prices should remain depressed for the next few years, but are expected to rebound and push much higher as consumer demand escalates. Moreover, oil prices are always subject to the vagaries of geopolitical drama, what could easily double prices in short order and/or lead to spot shortages.

China Racing Formula Team

Related to the NextEV auto building enterprise is NextEV TCR (Team China Racing). The race team participates in the new global electric FIA Formula E World Championship, what made its debut in Beijing in 2014 according to the company’s website.

This past June, NextEV TCR won the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship driver’s title in London, with Brazilian Nelson Piquet behind the wheel. The race team got started in 2004 as one of the A1GP teams, as authorized by China’s Ministry of Sport.

Godzilla Untamed: 2015 Nissan GT-R

March 27, 2015 by admin 6 Comments

Every once in a while I hit the Mother Lode with my weekly drivers. That bonanza comes chiefly in the form of a sports car, a prized model that turns heads and snaps necks. A BMW M6, Porsche Cayman, Porsche 911 4S, Corvette Stingray and a Jaguar F-TYPE have each landed in my driveway over the past two years. But it wasn’t until a Nissan GT-R arrived was I able to fully appreciate the historic significance and full-blown power of this iconic model.

Nissan GT-R

Supercar Supremacy

The Nissan GT-R’s reputation is well known and has earned it the “Godzilla” appellation from fans everywhere. It is a model that has been around since 2007, the spiritual successor to the Nissan Skyline GT-R. Although the Honda/Acura NSX and the Lexus LFA have both achieved super car status, only the GT-R has remained consistently in production and on everyone’s performance radar.

The stateside version showed up in 2009 and immediately placed a halo over the entire Nissan range. Where US Nissan fans already knew that the brand had performance aspirations, it was only when the model finally manifested itself that those claims were clarified.

Now in its ninth model year, this high performance Nissan sport coupe has managed to stay relevant through a constant stream of improvements. From the onset, launch control has been an ever-present and a much desired feature, one that was tweaked early on to reduce transaxle stress, a potential warranty issue. Indeed, a software change fixed that problem and in the process the GT-R immediately benefited from improved acceleration.

Changes across the intervening years upped both the horsepower and torque quotients, enhanced the suspension system and upgraded the brakes, as well as the steering and tires. LED headlights and a quieter cabin followed.

Nissan GT-R

2015 Nissan GT-R

The 2015 Nissan GT-R retails from $101,770 and is rated at 545 horsepower and 463 foot-pounds of torque thanks to a hand-built 3.8-liter twin turbo V-6 engine. [As a side note, Cadillac recently discussed its own power dense 3.0-liter twin turbo V-6 engine, claiming that it will be “…one of the most power-dense V-6 DOHC engines in the world, developing 133 horsepower (99 kW) per liter.” That’s a full 9 horsepower per liter below the Nissan twin turbo, by the way].

The Black Edition, replete with a dry carbon-fiber rear spoiler, 20-inch dark finished RAYS wheels and Black/Red Recaro front seats is priced from $111,510. From there, you would make a leap to the GT-R NISMO, a “limited availability” model priced from $149,990. Notably, that price premium raises horsepower to a jaw-dropping 600-hp, and brings in NISMO features to the suspension system as well as to the wheels.

NISMO is, by the way, an abbreviation for Nissan Motorsport International Limited. NISMO has been applied to other Nissan models, including JUKE, 370Z and soon the compact Sentra sedan. Let’s just say that the touch elsewhere is comparatively light to the strong-handed, open fisted attention NISMO engineers give to the GT-R.

Nissan GT-R

My test model was the base edition with a final price tag of $106,650. Besides the $285 GT-R floor mats, the other option was the $3,000 Regal Red paint scheme. Certainly, that finish “earns” its lofty price as it is embedded with 24-carat gold flakes to provide an incomparable look.

Naturally, you did not come to this article to learn how many cup holders are present or gloss over dozens of other features that typify the modern American sedan. Suffice to say, this 2+2 coupe has an almost useless back seat, although I did find it does a good job of holding my brief case in place as I navigated various circuitous routes. Further, an 8.8 cubic-foot trunk was a surprise, offering more than enough room to store luggage for an extended weekend away from home.

Beastly, Provocative Exterior

Nissan GT-RFrom the exterior, the Nissan GT-R offers nothing less than an imposing presence. From bumper to bumper, this model advances its muscular persona, one amplified by its large, gaping grille augmented by oversized headlamp assemblies punctuated by a lighting bolt lighting accent. The broad hood is marked by a pair of intercooler vents.

The GT-R’s profile is dominated by the large wheel wells, fender vents, and skirting. Yes, the roof line falls dramatically from front to rear pillars, then eases into a raised rear deck.

Everyone (or at least the people I talked to about the GT-R) has a standout feature they like best about the exterior. Personally, its rear visage is the most enchanting as it is dominated by quad brake and turn signal lights. The rear diffuser is offset by quad exhaust finishers, easily some of the largest stock versions you will ever see.

Comfortable, Luxurious Interior

Inside, the GT-R’s cabin is quite comfortable. At least for two people. Both the driver and front passenger have access to form-fitting seats that are firm, supportive and precisely what you need as you take on twisty roads at breakneck speeds.

No flat-bottomed steering wheel here — the GT-R’s sporting credentials are well known — and the instrument panel is dominated by an oversized tachometer, placed directly in the center. To the left is a 220-mph gauge speedometer; to the right are three dials for parking mode, oil temperature and a gas gauge.

The center stack is your usual color display with a highly unusual performance center to display cornering, acceleration and g-force data. If you take your GT-R to the track, it keeps tabs on lap times too.

Exquisitely stitched leather door inlays, carbon-fiber and charcoal-brushed metal trim, and a smattering of other high-end, but not easily identifiable materials grace the cabin. Chances are you won’t pay all that much attention to the feel of things, rather to what they do for you. And in the GT-R, that “doing” is everything when it comes to your satisfaction.

Nissan GT-R

Monster Under the Hood

The signature point of this model is, of course, the powertrain. The twin-turbo engine is paired with a dual-clutch six-speed automatic transmission, what can be operated in manual mode. Kudos again to Nissan for placing the paddle shifters on the steering column and not on the wheel itself. I don’t know why most other manufacturers have yet to get this point, a highly sensible way to promote engaged driving.

Sadly, there is no manual transmission offered with the GT-R. But I must admit that I didn’t miss it. If reaching your performance thresholds are important to you, then only the automatic can get you there faster.

Nissan places the start/stop button in the console located between the front seats. It is a bright red button, aptly colored to amplify the “hotness” of this model. Put your foot on the brake, press the button and Godzilla awakens. His moan is subdued and stays that way throughout the drive — I take it that Nissan didn’t amplify the exhaust system to create false notes — it sounds authentic and without the attendant back burst drama.

Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R wants to go fast and around town this sport coupe seems as if has been restrained, with tightened steering and wheels that plod along. Once you get to highway speeds, the beast within emerges and is ready to play.

And play you will: the GT-R makes even the novice driver look like a professional, with its balanced all-wheel drive system, adjustable suspension with Bilstein dampers and ultra-nimble steering making it all seem like child’s play. The engine booms and delivers copious amounts of power on demand, with turbo lag virtually indiscernible. And that’s good, because with a 0-to-60 mph rating of under three seconds, this potent beast has Gigan and Megalon eating his dust.

From Local Driving to Oblivion

To get the full benefit of the Nissan GT-R, track time is a necessity. I cannot underscore this point enough — even if you have access to a long stretch of un-policed roadways, you’re not able to fully appreciate everything that this car can do. Nevertheless, even in short spurts Godzilla displays much of its renowned power and does so with little effort. Clearly, the GT-R was the quickest car I have ever driven.

As for Godzilla’s future, we have heard rumblings about a next generation model, including a possible mid-engine replacement with seating for two. We are not likely to see that model before 2018, but in whatever permutation it takes, the GT-R’s reputation demands nothing short of Nissan’s finest effort.

Multimatic to Build the Ford GT

February 18, 2015 by admin 2 Comments

The upcoming Ford GT super car was a closely guarded secret until its stunning reveal at an auto show in Detroit this past Jan. However, Ford will not build this 600-horsepower beast in-house, choosing instead to tap Multimatic, Inc., a Canadian supplier, to assemble it in Ontario.

The Ford GT is a 600+ horsepower beast, powered by an enhanced twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 engine. The super car literally stole the show at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and has also stolen the hearts of not a few race car enthusiasts. The GT will go into production in Canada, with privately-held and Toronto-based Multimatic tasked with handling the work.

Production of the Ford GT will commence in late 2016 according to a report filed by The Globe & Mail. Joe Henrich, president of the Americas for Ford Motor Company, made the announcement at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto late last week, confirming speculation that an outside supplier would, indeed, handle production.

Ford GT and Ford Leadership.

Left to Right: Bill Ford, Mark Fields, Joe Hinrichs and Raj Nair with the new Ford GT. All four men were part of a limited group of people behind the super car’s secretive development.

Multimatic Does Performance

Multimatic and Ford have collaborated for more than 30 years. The privately-held company is the supplier of choice for other companies too, especially renowned performance models, including the Chevrolet Z/28 and Aston Martin. For instance, in cooperation with Chevrolet Performance, the company supplies lightweight Multimatic DSSV dampers for the Z/28 and other Camaro models. Moreover, the company says that its DSSV has been the damper of choice for cars running the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Ford GT has been receiving well-deserved accolades since its global premier, including garnering the prestigious EyesOn Design Award for best production vehicle at the NAIAS. That award is assigned only to new production vehicles debuting at the Detroit show. Likewise, the Ford GT won “Best of Show” honors in the 2015 Detroit News Reader’s Choice Awards.

Lightweight Ford GT

Ford’s super car expressly demonstrates the company’s innovation as it fuses an ultra-efficient, high-performance engine with advanced light-weighting and aerodynamics to deliver a truly exceptional race car. Furthermore, it also represents just one of at least a dozen new models coming from Ford Performance over the next five years, including specific Mustang and F-150 variants as well as the upcoming Ford Focus RS.

Ford’s GT features a mid-mounted twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, with power sent to the rear wheels. It is composed of a lustrous, aerodynamic, two-door coupe body shell. Lightweight materials, including carbon fiber structural elements and aluminum front and rear subframes, will enable outstanding acceleration and handling along with improved overall efficiency.

Ford says that the hyper EcoBoost V-6 is “based on the same race-proven engine architecture serving Ford’s IMSA Daytona Prototype endurance racing efforts,” and features a generous power band with remarkable time-to-torque temperament.

The GT’s lightweight chassis is an engineering marvel as it is marked by an active racing-style torsion bar and pushrod suspension, with adjustable ride height. The super car’s 20-inch wheels are attired with Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 tires composed of a special compound and structure engineered particularly for the Ford GT. Its multi-spoke wheels encompass carbon-ceramic brake discs at every corner.

Limited Build, High Price

Inside, Ford says that the interior has been optimized to ensure control, comfort and safety. Dihedral or upward swinging doors enable access to that cabin, itself marked by an F1-style steering wheel with integrated driver controls. A configurable, digital instrument panel and paddle shifters are among the other highlights of the cockpit.

Certainly, the Ford GT will be built in small numbers and its price has not been announced. Still, with the GT mentioned in the same breath as other high-end models — Lamborghini Huracan ($237,250) and McLaren 650S ($265,500) — a quarter of million dollar price tag seems entirely plausible.

BMW i8 Bedazzles at Frankfurt

September 12, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

It is both an electric vehicle and a super car, what makes the BMW i8 so unique in the emerging field of vehicle electrification. Introduced to a packed media audience at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany, it represents the first production model in BMW’s new “i” sub-brand segment. The BMW i8 will appear in US showrooms in Spring 2014 and will be priced from $135,700.

2013 BMW i8.

PHEV BMW i8

The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), marrying vehicle electrification to a sports car body. It is a 2+2 super car, based on BMW’s all-new and proprietary LifeDrive architecture. The passenger compartment is made from carbon-fiber reinforced plastic with wing-like doors accentuating this model’s persona. Its big on the positive emotive points that BMW enthusiasts want, dispensing with the utilitarian look that most EVs advance.

BMW says that its super car combines its TwinPower Turbo technology with eDrive, to deliver a model that will go from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.4 seconds, while still delivering a projected 94 mpg equivalent fuel economy rating. The drive train makes 362 horsepower and 420 foot-pounds of torque, “with torque distribution geared towards optimized dynamics.” The gas engine supplies 231 horsepower to the rear wheels and the electric power delivers 131 horsepower to the front wheels for this all-wheel drive model.

Multiple Driving Modes

The BMW i8 is equipped with five driving modes, enabling drivers to go as far as 22 miles on electric power only and at speeds up to 75 mph before the 1.5-liter three cylinder gas engine kicks in. Its COMFORT balances vehicle dynamics and efficiency; the SPORT mode makes the best use of the electric motor’s boost function; ECO MODE achieves its highest efficiency numbers, what can be operated in both all-electric and hybrid modes.

The vehicle’s aluminum chassis features a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle. BMW makes use of electric steering, dynamic damper control and will outfit each model with 20-inch light-alloy wheels. Other lightweight materials include the instrument panel with magnesium support, thin glass utilized on the trunk and carbon fiber-aluminum used in the doors.

Equipment List

BMW has not released the full standard equipment list for the i8, but we do know that it will include a fully-digital instrument display, BMW iDrive with freestanding Control Display, leather sports seats; four interior equipment options and a proactive drive system. Other features will include a navigation system, online entertainment, traffic reports, high beam assist, surround view, a rear back up camera, and a head-up display.

Owners will also have access to an in-home i-Charging station, a special ChargeNow card for public charging and various app-based mobility services. Additional details will accompany its US debut, likely to take place at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show this Nov.

Much comment has been made in the press about the BMW competing against the likes of Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari, to name a few. On a pure performance level, the BMW i8 won’t match the sub 3-second 0 to 60 mph mastery of the hyper cars, the be all and end all measuring stick for the most rabid enthusiasts. What the BMW i8 brings to the segment is a model that takes up where the Tesla Roadster left off, serving a tiny niche of deep-pocketed consumers that want the novel, even the extreme.

50 Years of the Porsche 911

May 13, 2013 by Mark Martin 4 Comments

Porsche Carrera Speedster.
The classic beauty of the original Porsche endures forever.

The Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year will mark the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Porsche 911, which was first unveiled at that show in 1963. Porsche has managed to maintain the 911’s position at the forefront of the super car market ever since, with the model being just as popular today as it was five decades ago.

Porsche 911 Background

The 911 was launched as a replacement for the 356, which had entered production in 1948 and was the Porsche company’s first road car. The 356 had been designed prior to World War II, with three manufactured for the 1939 race from Berlin to Rome which was eventually cancelled. It was revived at the end of the War, with 76,000 being manufactured before attention was shifted to the 911.

But did you know that Porsche initially intended to call the car the 901 and that it was unveiled at the Frankfurt with that designation? However, Peugeot launched a complaint claiming that they had the legal rights to car names which featured three numbers with a zero in the middle. Eighty-two 901s were manufactured before Porsche was forced to change the name to the 911.

Contemporary Favorite: Porsche 911 Carrera
Contemporary Favorite: Porsche 911 Carrera.

Evolutionary Changes

Gradual improvements have been made to the 911 over the years by Porsche to ensure that it remains current and relevant with modern day motorists. This has led to five major design overhauls since its initial launch. Although aesthetically it has remained largely similar, its evergreen design has helped the 911 maintain its popularity with the Porsche factory in Stuttgart that still ships out 110 911s daily. To date, it has been estimated that 820,000 911s have been manufactured in this Stuttgart factory since 1963.

The 911s continued popularity with car enthusiasts has no doubt been helped by its huge and varied success in motor sport over the past five decades. It is perhaps most associated with the 24 hours of Le Mans; a race which it has been won on remarkable 14 occasions by derivatives of the Porsche 911. This association was heightened by the 1971 film ‘Le Mans’, which featured the legendary Steve McQueen as the lead Porsche driver.

24 Heures du Mans

Porsche 911overall victory and its first since 1998. Red Bull race winner Mark Webber is strongly tipped to leave Formula One to lead Porsche’s challenge, such is the expectation around the return of the brand to the race.

Le Mans isn’t the only event where the Porsche 911 has made a mark, having also recorded the 10 wins at the 12 hours of Sebring and four victories at the notorious and icy Monte Carlo Rally; highlighting the versatility of the model.

Porsche is also using the motorsport arena to develop the next generation of 911; working with the Williams F1 team to develop a hybrid 911 to compete in GT sports car races. It is expected that this technology will come as standard on future 911s as the fuel crisis becomes more severe.

Porsche 911 On Steroids

Porsche has previously utilized expertise harnessed from motor racing for performance purposes rather than fuel economy. In 1996, it developed a version of the 911 which is amongst the most powerful road going cars ever produced by the German manufacturer. Built with a mid-mounted engine, it was effectively a 700 bhp road legal version of Porsche’s GT1 Le Mans car and was capable of a remarkable top speed of 235 mph.

The Porsche 911 is highly respected within motoring circles, coming in second on the list of ‘100 Coolest Cars’ in a survey conducted by Automobile Magazine. It was also named World Performance Car of the year in 2012.

Porsche Museum Celebration

Porsche itself is also planning on marking the anniversary, with the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany, holding a special exhibition marking the occasion from June 4 through September 29 this year.
