The High Potency Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody Coupe

The Dodge Challenger is a mid- to large-size sport coupe, a throwback to models popular in the 1960s and 1970s. The current model, introduced in 2008, has undergone numerous tech and engineering iteration since, but otherwise remains largely the same over its current run. The Challenger competes in a narrow segment with the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang. Unlike the other two with available convertibles, this one makes do with its traditional hardtop design.

Dodge offers the 2020 Challenger in multiple trims and additional permutations based chiefly on the drivetrain or powertrain available. The standard SXT starts at $28,095, while the Hellcat Redeye Widebody costs $78,695. The top-trim models also incur a $2,100 gas guzzler tax. All models are assessed with a $1,495 destination charge.

Our test model had one of the longest model names we’ve seen thus far – 2020 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody. The model year, brand, and model name need no further explanation, but the remaining four descriptors do. First, we have SRT – Street and Racing Technology. This is Dodge’s performance arm, which is responsible for developing the performance versions of the Charger, Challenger, and Durango models.

Second, we have Hellcat. Although that name hardly needs an introduction, it represents models motivated by the most powerful of three Hemi V8 engines. The current performance range starts at 717 and tops out at 807 horsepower. It’s that upper range that represents the Redeye sobriquet: 797 or 807 horsepower. The final designation, Widebody, represents wider fenders, body skirting and enhanced wheel lips that increase the Challenger’s width. Here, the Challenger is no wider between the left and right wheels, but its overhangs are more pronounced.

With a starting price of $78, 695, the Redeye already carries a $50,000 price premium over the base model. Add in the required gas guzzler tax ($2,100) and the destination charge ($1,495), and the cost rises to $82,290.

But there are upgrades available too in the form of various packages. These include a Plus Package ($2,095), Driver Convenience Group ($1,295), Technology Group ($1,295), Laguna Leather Package ($1,795), Alcantara Appearance Package ($1,795), and a Carbon and Suede Interior Package ($1,595). There is also a Rear Seat Delete option that replaces the rear seat with a cargo net.

Our final price came in at $92,245, but that’s before discounting kicks in that typically shaves thousands off the final cost. As of this writing, the discounts approached $8,000.

Exterior

The Challenger’s silhouette represents the familiar “coke bottle” design from this model’s earliest years and modernized for the twenty-first century. Dodge kept enough of the original’s design elements to make a handsome tribute to the earlier model, including the oval headlamps, high profile, and the defining “fuel” label over the fuel door.

New elements include LED lights ringing the headlamps, contemporary sport wheels set within all-season performance tires, and track LED lighting, to name a few. Line the original and the current model side-by-side and the heritage cues becomes quite evident.

As for the Hellcat, Dodge includes numerous features that enhance performance and looks. Most noticeable is the aluminum dual-scoop hood, a design that supplies the Hellcat with “nostrils.” An SRT front fascia, conical cold-air intake, special 20-inch lightweight aluminum wheels, and red brake calipers are other noteworthy upgrades.

We’d be remiss if we left out three sources for cooling the Redeye: the two air catcher headlamps and an inlet located near the wheel liner. The air catchers are interesting as they replace what appears to be headlamps up front. Instead, holes allow air to flow through the engine compartment.

Dodge also gives the Redeye special badging unique to this trim. Look closely at the Hellcat insignia and direct your attention to where an eye would be. On other Hellcat models, there isn’t an eye. On this one, a red “eye” is present.

Interior

The Challenger seats five, but two is the ideal. The rear seat seems almost like an afterthought – access and egress are difficult. Moreover, if you sit in the back, you’ll find the legroom limited: just 33.1 inches are available. That’s still better than some models, but it isn’t comfortable. Also, you’ll sit low and the sightlines are terrible. Certainly, it would be better to opt for the rear seat delete and call it a day.

We’re pleased with the Challenger’s fit and finish as well as the materials used. The interior is dark, well ordered, and not overrun by buttons and gadgets. Its as close to a throw-back design as Dodge dared go without leaving twenty-first century buyers in the dust.

The instrumentation is heritage oriented with huge dials for the tachometer and speedometer. The usual driver information center sits between the two and reveals a Hellcat Redeye logo on ignition. A flat-bottomed steering wheel and center console passenger hand grip are expected touches along with the aluminum pedals.

The front seats are comfortable, even a bit snug with generous bolstering. Most definitely Dodge designed this car with the driver and front passenger’s comfort in mind.

One of the Challenger’s strong suits is its big trunk, which measures 16.2 cubic feet. Compare that to the 13.5 cubic feet for the Mustang and the 9.1 cubic feet for the Camaro and the differences are quite stark.

Safety

If you want forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control, these features are available on all other trims, but not on the Hellcat Redeye. We’re not sure why it’s this way, but it might have something to do with the grille design and the placement of sensors and cameras.

Choose the Driver Confidence Group and the Redeye gains blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic detection. But you won’t find other features such as lane keep assist and lane departure warning, which are common in modern cars.

An automatic is the only choice with the Redeye.

Technology

Fiat Chrysler’s Uconnect infotainment interface is one of our favorites. It’s easy to use with clear screens and large icons present. Some Challenger models have the standard 7-inch display, while others, including the Hellcat, have an 8.4-inch display.

Dodge bundles Uconnect with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, and two USB ports. The Hellcat adds navigation, although you might not use it much if you’re connected with your smartphone.

A six-speaker sound system is standard across the model line, although an Alpine system is in the Hellcat.

Better yet, if you spring for the audio group upgrade, you’ll gain an 18-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and that makes for a sweet sound experience!


A sporty, yet uncomplicated interior.

Performance

The differences between the standard Hellcat and the Redeye yields a power boost of more than 10 percent with the latter. While the standard model makes 717 horsepower and 656 pound-feet of torque, the Redeye delivers 797 horsepower and 717 pound-feet of torque.

The power increase is due to yet another modification under the hood. Specifically, Dodge swaps out the 2.4-liter supercharger in the Hellcat for a 2.7-liter unit in the Redeye. Furthermore, boost increases from 11.6 PSI to 14.5 PSI, while the redline moves up to 6,400 RPM from 6,000 RPM.

But Dodge wasn’t done yet as the Redeye also benefits from stronger rods and pistons, an enhanced oil capability, and a pair of dual-stage oil pumps (up from the standard one). Other upgrades include an all-new performance hood, a mail-slot grille, and a cold-air intake fixed near the wheel liner.


The Redeye delivers 797 horsepower or 807 with the Sport Stock.

Inasmuch as the power quotient increases here, Dodge gives customers an opportunity to bump performance to 807 horsepower by means of a Super Stock package. This upgrade not only increases power but it comes with a revised suspension system and grippier tires. No, this trim doesn’t match the Hellcat Demon’s 848 horsepower, but it also doesn’t require aircraft fuel – premium grade will do. Anyway, the Demon with premium fuel was “only” rated at 808 horsepower for a barely noticeable increase over the Super Stock.

So, the big question related to the Challenger, specifically the Hellcat and entirely to the Redeye is this one: how fast is it? For the 0-60 mph time, it comes in at a blistering 3.4 seconds. As for the quarter-mile, figure about 10.8 seconds at 131 mph. Yes, we did play with the first time, but not the second – you need a track to reach that lofty speed.

The way the Redeye behaves is nothing less than outstanding. What may slow you down is the shifting and squealing rear tires. More than once the tires shifted out from underneath us as full power moved to the rear wheels. This can be disconcerting to the novice or anyone unfamiliar with the raw power at hand. A tight grip of the steering wheel and easing up on the gas pedal will bring the Redeye under control.

Some of the most fun is procured by playing with the touchscreen display. Indeed, all the performance commands to help you get the most out of the Redeye are reachable by clicking “Apps” on the screen. From there, you’ll find various “race options,” including line lock, launch control, chiller, shift light, and race cooldown.

Electronic lock is a sought-after feature, something that engages the front brakes to hold the coupe steady while leaving the rear wheels free for a burnout. You may have seen videos of these antics and they are certainly a sight to behold. The noise and smoke generated is astounding – you don’t want to do this too much for the sake of the tires.

We prefer playing with launch control as this is a better way to gauge performance. This feature works by activating the system, holding the brake pedal in place with your left foot while pressing down on the gas pedal with your right foot. Once the engine hits a certain RPM (usually in about 10 seconds), then release the brake and enjoy head snap-back straight-line acceleration.

Two other features include the chiller and after-run chiller. The first one is tasked with diverting the air-conditioning refrigerant from the cabin to a chiller unit mounted by the low temperature circuit coolant pump. After going through other processes, the coolant finally flows to the heat exchangers in the supercharger. In the Redeye, the chiller is optimized to lower the intake air temperature further for improved performance.


Are you ready for line lock?

The second feature is what Dodge calls an “after-run chiller.” It’s designed to automatically kick on when the engine is shut off, keeping the cooling fan and low-temperature circuit coolant pump running to lower the supercharger air temperature. It’s on the panel where the driver can track the supercharger temperature.

We’re thoroughly impressed by what the Hellcat Redeye has to offer. Besides its heritage good looks, comfortable seats, and decent tech offerings, it simply is a very fast car. We found the steering weighty, but not tiresome, and the ride was comfortable. On the other hand, it doesn’t excel in cornering. The Redeye is heavy – it weighs more than 4,400 pounds and it doesn’t feel light on its feet. In fact, it feels cumbersome at times, especially when navigating twisty roads. It isn’t anywhere as well planted as the Camaro or Mustang, and it certainly is not like any smaller model such as the Toyota GR Supra or the Nissan 370Z.

While most sport coupes of this generation do a far better job of handling twisty roads, the Challenger tends to rock back and forth slightly. If you’re cornering, the full weight of this vehicle becomes apparent if you don’t significantly reduce your speed. Dodge offers all-wheel drive with the V6 model, but only rear-wheel drive with the V8s. The added weight of such a system would affect performance, although its handling advantage would assist with control. The Camaro and Mustang are about 500 pounds lighter and at least six inches shorter between the axles. Neither has all-wheel drive, but both have sophisticated suspension systems.

Most of our driving was local or by navigating the backroads of central North Carolina. We took one trip to Roxboro, a 90-mile circuitous route. We averaged 16.6 mpg across those miles, but finished about 1 mpg lower overall. For this reason the Redeye is slapped with the EPA’s gas guzzler tax as the Redeye earns an estimated 13 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway for a combined 16 mpg. Premium fuel is the rule; expect regular fill ups if the Redeye is also your daily driver.

Which Hellcat?

Our focus here is on the Redeye, but it isn’t the only Hellcat model. Indeed, start with the standard model and that’s all the Hellcat most drivers want. Quite easily, your price may approach $70,000, but that’s before discounting comes in.

The Redeye with or without the Super Stock Package brings in the extra performance, but it does so at a significant price premium. Indeed, the Hellcat Redeye Widebody represents a $17,600 upgrade bundle and that’s before another $10,000 in package options on our test model.

Doubtlessly, few people give price another thought when weighing the Redeye – they can afford the upgrade and they also value the performance edge provided. Judging by this vehicle’s reception at a local Cars and Coffee event, the Redeye is the frosting on the eye candy everyone wishes they had. And that, my friends, is enough.

Raptor Fighter: Ram 1500 TRX!

Ram debuts the 1500 TRX, its answer to the Ford F-150 Raptor. Billed as an “apex predator,” Ram claims the new model is the “quickest, fastest, and most powerful mass-produced truck in the world…”

The long-awaited Ram 1500 TRX made its debut on Monday, the brand’s answer to the Ford F-150 Raptor. For the first time since the Raptor’s debut a decade ago, it has a serious challenger, one that Ram calls the “apex predator,” in an obvious rub against Ford’s vaunted truck. The new truck debuts this fall and comes with the same 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine powering various Dodge Hellcat models.

Ram’s debut was held online, yet another concession to the COVID-19 pandemic that’s turned the world upside down this year. Nevertheless, manufacturers are moving ahead with new and specialty models, realizing that the pandemic will eventually end and customers will continue to crave what’s offered.

The TRX’s engine is rated 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine powering the Raptor delivers 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. Ram utilizes an 8-speed automatic transmission to route power to the wheels and that’s the same one found in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. The Raptor has a 10-speed automatic.

Ram claims a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds and 0-100 mph in 10.5 seconds. The current Raptor has a 5.1-second 0-60 mph time. We may see some improvement for the Ford when the all-new 2021 F-150 debuts this fall. That said, the Raptor typically doesn’t arrive until months after a new F-150 debuts.


The TRX features an all-new, unique suspension system with active damping, one that Ram says is inspired by desert off-road racers. This system incorporates forged aluminum front upper and lower control arms with special attention to caster and camber angles during suspension cycling.

TRX uses a Dana 60 solid rear axle with a 3.55 ratio featuring full-floating hubs and axle-hop damper for improved traction and axle control on rough surfaces. An electronic locking
rear differential is standard for increased performance off-road.

The TRX features a fully-loaded interior with a custom, padded, flat-bottom steering wheel.

Based on the same layout at the Rebel, trucks outfitted with a TR Equipment Group welcome passengers with premium cloth and vinyl accents featuring black and Dark Ruby Red surfaces.
Opting for the TR1 or TR2 Equipment Group provides an interior based on the Ram 1500 Limited and features an all-black color scheme with leather and suede to give TRX a unique appearance.

cover the front bucket and rear bench seats.

The TR1 and TR2 Equipment Groups come standard with medium Greystone stitching and Graphite Metallic accents. The TR2 Equipment Group offers TRX red stitching
and carbon fiber accents as an available option.


The 2021 Ram TRX features a 2-inch ride height advantange over the Ram 1500, supplying it with 11.8 inches of ground clearance and capability of up to 32 inches of water fording.

Notably, the TRX has three special off-road modes – Mud/Sand, Rock and Baja. Like the on-road modes, the off-road drive modes control several systems, including the four-wheel-drive system, throttle response, transmission, paddle shifters, suspension and steering.

Other attributes include an 8,100-pound towing capacity and a 1,310-pound payload rating.


The TRX rides on Goodyear Wrangler Territory 325/65/R18 All-Terrain 35-inch tires, which were developed exclusively for Ram TRX. They’re designed to mitigate wear resistance, enhance traction, and reduce road noise. This truck features 15-inch brakes, the largest in the segment.

Ram says the TRX has an approach angle of 30.2 degrees, a breakover angle of 21.9 degrees,
and a departure angle of 23.5 degrees.


The TRX is 8-inches wider than a standard Ram 1500 at 88 inches and carries a 6-inch-wider track. Sizeable 325/65R18 (35-inch) tires cycle through 13-inches of front and 14-inches of rear-wheel travel with Bilstein Blackhawk e2 adaptive dampers controlling the mass. The any-speed rear locker lives in a full-floating Dana 60 rear axle, which raises the minimum ground clearance to 11.8-inches.

Ram 1500 TRX Launch Edition

Ram says the TRX will cost $70,000 plus a $1,690 destination charge. With various upgrades and add-ons included, we’re likely to see some versions top $100,000, an almost unimaginable amount for a pickup truck. Likely, the limited Launch Edition model (702 compies) will set the pace with its special paint scheme, unique red and brushed-aluminum center console badge identifying it as a special, limited-edition TRX model, and a 19-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system, among other features. The Launch Edition arrives this fall.

On the Prowl With a 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody

Behind the wheel of the world’s most powerful production sedan.

You’ll pay about $70,000 to acquire one.

The Dodge Charger stands alone among mainstream sedans. Its full-size body style is increasingly uncommon and its traditional rear-wheel-drive platform makes it unique in this segment, sharing its footprint with the Chrysler 300, while also counting a Dodge Challenger coupe derivative.

We recently had the opportunity to drive the most potent version of the 2020 Charger when an SRT Hellcat Widebody model was dropped off for a week’s worth of fun. To that end, we’re dispensing with our usual model review to drill down on this most impressive of Charger models.

Hellcat Musings

Dodge’s use of the Hellcat name originated in 2015 when it released a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine for both the Charger and Challenger. In 2018, the Jeep Grand Cherokee got its version, which was named the Trackhawk. That same year Dodge made a crate engine (hellcrate) available to anyone wanting this engine to upgrade their ride. Beginning in 2021, we’ll see a Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat, what’s likely to become the fastest SUV in the world.

The Hellcat name comes from the Grumman F6F Hellcat, which was the naval carrier-based fighter aircraft introduced in 1943 and used widely in the Pacific theater. Great Britain also received more than 1,000 units and these were widely used until the end of World War II.


The Charger features a classic coke bottle layout. This one is amplified with a bright patina, widebody trim and wheels, and huge Brembo brake covers in red.

History of the modern Dodge Charger. Car fans know that the original Charger name was affixed to a sport coupe in the 1960s and 1970s. What they prefer to ignore is that this name was later used on a subcompact front-wheel-drive model for six years in the 1980s. While the switch to four doors angered some when the current model rolled out in 2005, various performance versions have consoled the faithful. Besides, with the Challenger coupe’s arrival in 2008, happiness followed. This writer has gotten over his disappointment that the Magnum wagon disappeared in 2008 after an all-too-brief four-year run.

Origin of the current Charger. Credit DaimlerChrysler with supplying us with the Magnum, Charger, 300, and Challenger. DaimlerChrysler was the name of the entity founded in 1998 that brought Mercedes-Benz and the Chrysler Corporation brands under one name. The LX platform underpinning these models comes from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class platform of the 1990s, but the American version was designed stateside. Chrysler tapped the Mercedes parts bin for its five-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, rear differential, and the multi-link rear suspension. In 2011, four years after separating from Daimler, Chrysler rolled out an updated platform and dubbed it LD (the Challenger sits on an LA variant). The three remaining models are based on the 2011 update.

What’s a widebody? In recent years, we’ve seen Dodge roll out Widebody versions of its Challenger and Charger. No, Dodge did not broaden vehicle width, but they did add bodywork such as chunky wheel lips to give these models an even more formidable presence. The Widebody models have improved tire and suspension packages, including modified springs, sway bars, and shocks. The Bilstein three-mode adaptive damping system is especially noteworthy here.




Design attributes. Besides the various “widebody” exterior enhancements, the Hellcat benefits from several interior features and upgrades. We point out the front seats which are wide, gently bolstered, and all-day comfortable. In other words, they’re much more livable than the sport seats you find in many other models. In fact, I believe if you are a larger individual – taller and a bit wider, you’ll find these seats quite pleasing. Few cars can deliver such and that’s why pickup trucks are popular for bigger people. Move beyond the base model and you’ll find an ample amount of soft-touch materials. We liked the Hellcat’s quilted leather seats with the SRT debossing. It’s a fetching look without being overwrought. The center stack is cleanly ordered with an 8.4-inch touch-screen display (7 inches in base trims) with knobs and switches underneath to control audio and climate functions. The fat transmission shifter seems entirely appropriate for this model as do the metal-wrapped pedals.

Big on safety features; old design. The Charger’s aged design doesn’t help it with crash test scores, although it still earns high marks from the NHTSA, while the IIHS is less forgiving. The institute’s small front overlap testing typically favors modern models. With the Charger, it scored marginally. That said, the Charger does come with several features that go beyond the requisite suite of airbags and a rearview monitor. All models come with rear parking sensors. You have to move up through the trim ranks to find such features as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and blind-spot monitoring. They’re available and are certainly worth considering.

Four engine choices. Most manufacturers offer one or two engines for each model and call it a day. Not so with the 2020 Charger as there are four choices available. Beginning with a 3.6-liter V6 and extending to 5.7- and 6.4-liter V8 engines, there’s a naturally aspirated powerplant for varying levels of performance and efficiency available. The 6.2-liter V8 exclusive to the Hellcat is the only boosted engine of this cohort. All four engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Enhanced Hellcat performance. When it comes to performance, all eyes are on the Hellcat. The 2020 Charger features the standard amount of Hellcat power, specifically 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. That’s an incredible amount of power available and dwarfs the 300 horsepower delivered by the V6 and the 485 horsepower derived from its largest engine, the 6.4-liter V8. How fast is this most powerful of all Chargers? We’ve seen 0-60 mph times of 3.6 seconds from published sources. Yes, that likely makes the Charger the fastest production sedan in the world.

Hold on. Tightly. There is nothing subtle about the Hellcat’s performance. From the moment the ignition is engaged, the performance exhaust system percolates. I had a few people remark that the Charger is “very loud.” That’s what it is supposed to be – you’ll hear it coming well before it arrives. Step-off acceleration is excellent, but it is when you “floor it” that the Hellcat’s awesomeness comes to bear. And this is where maximum attention and control is required – the rear wheels quite easily will give out from underneath this burly sedan, sending the SRT Hellcat into a spin. This model is ideal for the straightaway, but extra caution is required on twisty roads and when entering and leaving corners. Its steering is weighty with direct handling. The Charger tracks well, but a measured increase in performance should result in a corresponding increase in personal attentiveness. We like the Hellcat’s around-town moan as well as its banshee-like scream when pressed into action.

More power for 2021. If 707 horsepower isn’t enough for you, then know that it’ll be bumped up to 717 horsepower for 2021. But the performance enhancement doesn’t stop there. We’ll also see a Hellcat Redeye variant roll out, this one based on the Challenger of the same name. Here, Dodge upgrades the standard 2.4 IHI supercharger to 2.7 liters. Moreover, boost increases from 11.6 PSI to 14.5 PSI, while the redline moves up from 6,200 to 6,500. The Redeye also benefits from stronger rods and pistons, an enhanced oil capability, and a pair of dual-stage oil pumps (up from the current one). Other upgrades include an all-new performance hood, mail-slot grille, and a cold-air intake fixed near the wheel liner. In all, the top-shelf Hellcat bakes 797 horsepower and 707 pound-feet of torque.

Looking ahead. We know what 2021 holds for the Charger, including the Hellcat, but what about the long term? You may know that Fiat Chrysler and France’s PSA Groupe are planning to merge and will form a new company called Stellantis. If the merger passes regulatory scrutiny (and that’s never a guarantee), the new company should emerge in the first half of 2021. We don’t know what that will mean for the Dodge brand, but we expect it will survive. Likely, the brand will continue in its present form for the short term, but new models based on PSA architecture seems likely. This could also mean the first plug-in Charger hybrid as well as other engine choices. But as long as demand remains for performance models, the Charger, Challenger, and Durango should remain.

Your Cost

Choose a 2020 Charger SRT Hellcat and you’ll pay handsomely to own one. Indeed with the $2,100 gas guzzler tax and $1,495 destination charge, your cost is $73,950. Options such as a Carbon/Suede interior, navigation, and Alcantara seats add thousands of dollars. With special paint and wheels, you’re looking at $80,000 before discounts kick in.

Driven: Land Rover Range Rover Velar

Land Rover’s place in the SUV market is defined by two product lines: Range Rover and Discovery. The Range Rover series represents the apex of the brand, while the Discovery line is representative of those models we typically think of as Land Rover.

The Range Rover Velar is the third of four Range Rover models, situated between the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. The eponymous Range Rover is the range-topping model. The Velar, though, is no shrinking violet. It brings to the Range Rover line a distinctly modern look inside and out, and a long list of features.


2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar Review


Our focus model is the range-topping SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, which starts at $90,790. Our test model added a few extras, bringing its final cost to just above $95,000, including the destination charge.

Exterior

The Velar may be the most modern of all Range Rover models, although a case can also be made for the Evoque. This five-passenger midsize luxury SUV is more subdued upfront than some competitors, eschewing an oversized grille, deep cutouts, and huge lights for something more subtle.

But subtle doesn’t mean it lacks panache – the Velar simply finds a way to impart elegance without gauche. Who said sophistication must be over the top? Strong shoulders, powerful roof pillars, a high beltline, and a formal expression define this model.

The SVAutobiography delivers features unique to this trim, including 21- or 22-inch gloss dark gray wheels, red brake calipers, special paint options, and bright chrome trim. An active sports exhaust system, sports suspension, and a sliding panoramic roof are other features of note.



Interior

Just as Range Rover pulls off the exterior with a peerless design, the interior delivers its own winning attributes.

The Velar’s cabin is roomy, bright, and rich in luxurious appointments. The best seats are upfront and this is where Range Rover pulls out all the stops with plush, supportive thrones. They come heated and ventilated, and deliver massaging support. They’re ideal for your in-between visits to the chiropractor and likely will be used frequently to relax tight and tired back muscles.

As comfortable as the front seats are, it is the material that wows the senses. As you might expect, Range Rover offers standard leather-covered seats. They’re beautiful and comfortable, just as you would expect from this quintessential British marque. But it is the available woven-wool seats that look and feel best, a natural alternative we think is bound to become an industry pacesetter. And not just for its feel, but as a choice for consumers who don’t like animal hides.

The rear seat is best for two and bearable for three adults. The power-reclining outboard seatbacks are a welcome feature.

Other features of note include a heated steering wheel, metal touches such as aluminum gearshift handles, thick carpeting, and choice interior color combinations.

The Velar’s standard storage space measures 29.4 cubic feet or 60.2 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. These numbers are about average for the class. This SUV pulls up to 5,500 pounds when properly equipped.

Tech

Where some competitors have big screens bolted to the top of the center console, the Velar’s screens are integrated into the dashboard and center console. Yes, there are two 10-inch-screens at work, with each tasked with managing different controls, including the infotainment (top) and passenger comfort (bottom). Called Touch Pro Duo, the system enables navigation on the top screen while playing media on the bottom screen.

All models come with Smart Phone Pack, representing a suite of features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optionally, customers can upgrade to a rear-seat entertainment system with a pair of 8-inch screens embedded in the rear of the front-seat headrests. Choose this option if regular rood trips are part of your family’s experience.

Land Rover taps Meridian to supply its sound systems and the Velar offers choices worth considering. On the top end, the 22-speaker unit supplies concert-hall-like sound throughout the cabin with every seating position the “best seat in the house.”

Satellite radio and HD Radio are included; USB input, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless phone charging, and Bluetooth are other features of note.



Safety

All Velar trims come with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and front and rear parking assist. Our top-trim model included each of the extras: driver attention monitoring, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display. Some mainstream models include most of these features as standard equipment.

Like other pricey models, neither the IIHS nor the NHTSA has put the Velar through crash testing. That said, we think its high-profile and weight are benefits that work in its favor.

Performance

Powering the SVAutobiography is a supercharged V8 engine with 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. This engine delivers massive amounts of power from the onset, enabling this two-ton-plus beast to scoot from 0-60 mph in just above four seconds. That’s laudable for any vehicle, but it seems even more impressive for this substantial SUV.

By utilizing a supercharger, this Velar enjoys full power from the start, although it drops somewhat at passing speed. That’s the opposite of a turbocharger that spools up to deliver its best power at wide-open throttle.

The Velar’s heft seems largely absent as the V8 pushes forward. Other Velar trims offer a 2.0-liter turbo-four or a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. This one is a far superior choice, but is exclusive to the top trim. All models work with an eight-speed automatic transmission, a knob-controlled unit that serves up cogs with ease.

With its air suspension, the Velar almost feels as if it floats, with the cabin well isolated from rough road surfaces. The steering is light, but engaging. This SUV handles reasonably well on twisty roads and while pulling out of corners but make no mistake that this is a high-profile vehicle and it can’t match the Jaguar F-Type in corner-carving.

You can take the Velar off-road with its terrain response system enabling your excursion. We think, though, the Defender is the better choice in this department, although the Velar’s active rear locking differential proves its mettle.

Competitive Set

One of the Velar’s closest competitors is the Jaguar F-Pace, its corporate cousin. Other models to consider include the Porsche Macan, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, BMW X5, and the Volvo XC60.


Our Recommendation


Inasmuch as the Velar SVAutobiography is an outstanding trim in its own right, we think the middle Velar S trim is the best choice. This one comes with the twin-turbo six-cylinder engine and supplies access to many trim embellishments, audio upgrades, and design features. You’ll pay about $70,000 for a well-equipped model, which is still thousands of dollars less than some competitors.

GMC Sierra v. Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson Pickup Trucks

Branded Harley-Davidson pickup trucks have been quite a commodity for motorcycle enthusiasts and longtime patrons. At the beginning of production in 2000, early versions of cross-branding were done with the Ford F-150 to highlight customer appreciation for trucks. The relationship lasted for 12 years, with Ford selling more than 70,000 specialty models.

After many years of cutting production, Harley-Davidson joins with the Tuscany Motor Company to redesign top truck models like the GMC Sierra and the classic Ford F-150 for their 2020 year. Let’s take a look at what new features come equipped on the special edition Harley-Davidson truck models.


Summit White and Onyx Black Harley-Davidson GMC Sierra

2020 Harley-Davidson GMC Sierra

The current-generation GMC Sierra gets a surprise visit from Harley-Davidson after many years of relying on Ford to be their brand of choice. With the help of Tuscany Motor Company, the redesigned GMC Sierra comes packed with 65 new performance enhancements, interior alterations, and exterior buffs to bring the truck to life.

Subtle Harley notes and modest color choices of Onyx Black, Summit White, and Satin Steel Metallic make these trucks a stunning appeal for any consumer looking to get a special edition truck. However, with only 250 models being produced, these trucks will be a hard commodity to get a hold of.

Performance Features

The GMC Sierra version comes stock with a 10-speed automatic transmission, 6.2-liter V-8 engine, creating a total horsepower of 420. Performance upgrades like a new BDS suspension, FOX performance shocks, and lateral stability bars give this new Harley-Davidson model a ride like no other GMC.

The truck also comes with new 22-inch Harley-Davidson-exclusive Fatboy motorcycle-style wheels and all-terrain Toyo 35-inch tires to complete the look.

Accessories

While performance features are essential, the Sierra wouldn’t be complete without proper Harley-Davidson finishes and improvements on the interior and exterior.

Some noteworthy details that Tuscany upgraded are the front-end grille design that has the Harley logo stamped throughout and the lifted skid plate that has an integrated LED light bar installed. The orange tow hooks and grille outlining complete the Harley-Davidson style exterior design that this truck ultimately needed.

Inside, Harley-Davidson went all out, including name branding and logo finishes throughout. Touches like a glowing orange dashboard, a Harley-Davidson center console design, and orange diamond-stitched leather seats set this model apart.

Every inch of this truck has a Harley-inspired element, all the way down to the bar-and-shield logo carpet floor mats.

No special-edition truck comes cheap though. With only 250 models planned, the price jumps up to $94,995 MSRP. These models became available at authorized GMC dealers beginning of February 2020.

After stopping production in 2012, Harley-Davidson first debuted their Ford F-150 model seven years later in 2019. With the return of the duo a success, Harley and Ford recently followed up with an even better 2020 version. The Ford Raptor-inspired pickup truck gives us a subtle glance at Harley-Davidson heritage mixed with the bold nature of a Ford.

Performance Features

Both the GMC Sierra and Ford F-150 trucks have similar hints of Harley-Davidson features with the customized grilles, FOX performance shocks, and the 22” Fatboy motorcycle-style wheels. However, the main difference between both these trucks lies under the hood.

Harley-Davidson Branded Supercharged V-8 Engine

The Ford F-150 comes stock with a Harley-Davidson branded 700+ Horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged V-8. To support this upgraded engine, Tuscany installed a performance air intake with a high flow filter, an aluminum intercooler, high-performance fuel injectors, and a performance programmer tuned to 700+ HP. This 2020 engine is a large improvement to the 5-liter V8 or the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine options that were installed on the 2019 Harley-Davidson F-150s.

Accessories

Other redesigned aspects of the Ford F-150 include very similar upgrades to the GMC Sierra. Each car is equipped with orange stitched diamond leather seats, an orange dash, an improved center console with the Harley-Davidson emblem and numbered console badge, and billet racing pedals. The true difference that makes the Ford and GMC apart from one another is the added detail to the engine put in the Ford F-150.

Special Edition Orange Dashboard Gauges

The Ford F-150 price tag is somewhat comparable to the GMC Sierra model, but with the added benefit of a supercharged 700+ HP engine, the price tag goes up to $107,725 without the added taxes or fees associated after purchase. There is still no known release date and no production number rumored at this time, but it may be similar to the 250 mark that caps the GMC Sierra. Now Trending: Special Edition Trucks

From first thought, it seems odd that a motorcycle company would cross industries to brand a truck. However, Harley-Davidson might be ahead of the game trying to bring recognition back to their brand after recent improvements to target a younger demographic. With Harley-Davidson being backed by a strong culture, it makes sense to continue branding in other areas like merchandising, event planning, and now, again, automotive redesigning.

Seeing as it has been quite a success from recent years, it leaves the question as to if other businesses or industries will begin reaching out to car re-designers like Tuscany to do different branded vehicles.

Tuscany has already been doing special edition vehicles on a large scale, but with consumers looking for more collaborations like with Harley-Davidson, what stops other businesses that have a cult following like Ferrari or the NFL from designing their own trucks throughout the next 10 years? 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit.

If you’re shopping for a new SUV, particularly one in the midsize arena with room for five, then the Jeep Grand Cherokee should be on your list. This popular and versatile model comes in a variety of packages, with its performance ranging from mild to wild. The cost spread from the base model to the fully-loaded track version can span $70,000.

What’s New for 2020

Now in its tenth year, the current-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee soldiers on mostly with equipment and trim-level upgrades. An expanded roster of driver-assist features, new wheel designs, and a newly available lighting group round out the changes.

Selecting Your Grand Cherokee

No other midsize SUV offers as many trim levels as does the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This model’s seven trims are comprised of Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, SRT, and Trackhawk. Prices including destination range from $33,540 for a Laredo 4×2 to $88,395 for the four-wheel-drive Trackhawk.

Four Engine Choices

Just as the Grand Cherokee offers a slew of trims, you’ll also find four engine choices. All four work with an 8-speed automatic transmission with power routed to the rear or all four wheels.

The standard engine is a V6 displacing 3.6 liters. This engine puts down 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. A 5.7-liter V8 engine makes 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque.

The next two engines are exclusive to their respective trims. The SRT trim has the 6.4-liter V8 engine making an even 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The range-topping Trackhawk shares its 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine with the Dodge Charger and Challenger Hellcat models. In the Grand Cherokee, it produces 707 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque.

As for towing, the standard model pulls up to 6,200 pounds, while all others have a 7,200-pound tow rating.

Passenger and Cargo Capacity

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a five-passenger midsize sport utility vehicle. The passengers sit in comfort with ample head, shoulder, hip, and legroom front and back.

Cargo space measures 36.3 cubic feet behind the second row. Drop down the rear seat and storage capacity is 68.3 cubic feet. This places the Grand Cherokee squarely between the Ford Edge and Chevrolet Blazer, and just ahead of the Nissan Murano.

Key Safety Features

The Grand Cherokee trails most of its competitors in advanced safety equipment. That said, blind-spot monitoring and a rear parking assist system are standard. Forward collision warning with active braking is included beginning with the Summit trim and available elsewhere except with the standard trim. Lane departure warning, advanced brake assist, and enhanced forward-collision warning are a package upgrade.

Connectivity

Jeep equips the Grand Cherokee with a 7-inch color display, a six-speaker audio system, and two USB ports. An 8.4-inch display screen is available with the Laredo and standard elsewhere. Satellite radio, additional USB ports, and navigation are available. A Blu-Ray entertainment system is available on all but the base model. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility are standard.

The standard Laredo has average equipment including automatic headlamps, fog lamps, and 17-inch silver aluminum wheels. Cloth seats, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, and dual-zone climate control are also standard.

Limited – From $41,350

Most shoppers will begin their search with the Limited as it adds amenities not found or charged extra in the Laredo. Fine leather, wood and metal trim give this model a premium look, allowing it to punch well above its weight. Alloy wheels, a power liftgate, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, a traction management system, and a 115-volt power outlet are included. Limited shoppers may also opt for the 5.7-liter V8 engine.

Trailhawk – From $46,450

As the name suggests, the Trailhawk adds equipment suitable for off-roading, including an air suspension system and rear load-leveling. Power-folding and heated side mirrors, a roof rack, all-terrain tires, and a nine-speaker Alpine audio system are included. The seats are covered in leather and suede material.

Overland – From $47,040

The Overland trim is just $590 more than the Trailhawk as it exchanges some of the off-road features of the Trailhawk for luxury amenities. This model includes bi-xenon high-intensity discharged headlamps, LED daytime running lights, LED fog lights, a panoramic sunroof, and upgraded leather seating.

Summit – From $53,490

The top-trim outside of the performance models is the Summit and bright exterior embellishments is one of its hallmarks. Upgraded LED fog lights, performance all-season tires, unique leather seats, and a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system are included.

SRT – From $69,890

Until the Trackhawk’s arrival, the SRT served as the performance topper for the Grand Cherokee. It is still a powerful model and like the Trailhawk it is four-wheel-drive-only. A traction management system, active damping, and a track-ready four-wheel-drive system are included. Special wheels and performance tires are also standard. An exclusive grade of leather covers the seats.

Trackhawk – From $88,395

The range-topping Trackhawk brings in elements from Dodge Hellcat models, in particular, a supercharged engine. It features gloss black trim, black-satin tires, open-poor wood trim, unique color offerings, and Nappa leather.

Parting Thoughts

Grand Cherokee pricing can get out of hand quickly. A Trackhawk can top $100,000, which is absurd. The good news is that you’ll probably pay about half that with a nicely equipped four-wheel-drive Overland.

The chief domestic manufacturers may be turning their backs on most car models, but left untouched are the muscle cars we love. These models include the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger and Charger, and the Ford Mustang, each of which delivers aggressive styling, potent engines, and timeless value.

The segment hasn’t always been as strong as it is today, especially when federal regulators instituted tough emissions and safety measures, beginning in the 1970s. Entire model lines, such as the Ford Torino, Dodge Charger, and the Buick GNX were canceled. Later, some of the brands that supported such models as the Mercury Cougar, Plymouth Roadrunner, Olds 442, and Pontiac Tempest and Firebird were discontinued.

Happily, the segment received a boost when modern models from Dodge and Chevrolet joined the Ford Mustang to supply the market with a current take on automotive sports coupe performance. These models offer more power, better steering and handling, and technologies the originals never had. Though demand is only a fraction of what we saw in the 1960s and 1970s, the core is strong and consumers love them.

2019 Chevrolet Camaro Overview

The 2019 Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette continue to uphold the performance car banner for Chevy, although the latter is most definitely a sports car. As for the Camaro, the current-generation model rolled out in 2016, six years after the nameplate was restored.

For 2019, the Camaro is refreshed, sporting revised front and rear fascias along with other design changes. Chevrolet added a new infotainment interface and introduced an LE performance package to its base models.

Chevrolet offers the 2019 Camaro in LS, LT (1LT, 2LT and 3LT), SS (1SS and 2SS) and ZL1 models. All but the LS are also available as a convertible. The competing Mustang also has a convertible, while the Challenger does not.

Prices range from $25,995 to $62,995 for the coupe and $32,495 to $70,695 for the convertible. All prices include the $995 destination charge. Yes, it is entirely possible to load the Camaro with every conceivable amenity and push the final price to $75,000. That may sound crazy, but it is in line with the top prices fetched by its competitors.

Camaro SS: Oh, Yes!

For the third time, Chevrolet sent a 2019 Camaro SS my way, the only Camaro models I’ve ever tested for publication. I’ve driven the others, but the SS is the best expression of Camaro performance at least until the ZL1 came along.

Before we look at all things SS, the “lesser” Camaro models deserve recognition too. This four-seat rear-wheel-drive model comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can upgrade to a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6, generating 335 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque.

Both engines work with either a six-speed TREMEC manual gearbox or to an 8-speed automatic transmission. When equipped with the automatic, the model with the standard engine makes an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway (20/30 mpg with the manual). Choose the V6 and the fuel economy is 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway (16/27 mpg with the automatic).

The Camaro SS raises the power quotient significantly with its 6.2-liter V8 engine making 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. Chevy pairs this engine with either the manual gearbox or to a 10-speed automatic transmission. My test model came with the automatic and although I prefer the manual, it serves this model well. Your fuel economy here is 16 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway (16/24 mpg with the manual).

Certainly, Chevrolet could have left well enough alone and stopped there. But they didn’t. And that’s a good thing. Camaro shoppers can upgrade to a supercharged version of the V8 (with the ZL1) and keep the same transmission pairings. As a result, a significant power boost is achieved, enabling this engine to bang out 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. On the negative side, fuel economy takes a hit as it falls to 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway (13/21 mpg with the automatic). Furthermore, a federal gas guzzler tax kicks in and it’ll lighten your wallet by $1,700.

Here are the highlights of the 2019 Camaro SS:

1. New exterior styling touches are apparent. Camaro fans will notice the changes at once. Up front, the SS has a new fascia marked by an updated grille, dual-element headlamps, and LED lighting. The extractor-style hood is a fresh design too. From the rear, the fascia features sculpted LED tail lamps with dark-tinted neutral-density (transparent) lenses. As for the wheels, you’ll find a new 20-inch design.

2. The ZL1’s automatic transmission is here. Most Camaro SS enthusiasts love the 6-speed manual gearbox, a signature performance piece in any muscle car. That said, a manual isn’t for everyone and that’s where an automatic transmission with paddle shifters comes in. For 2019, the SS gains a 10-speed automatic transmission, courtesy of the ZL1 trim, which already had this unit. The two extra gears suit this sports car just fine. We’ll explore this point when we drill down on our driving impressions.

3. You can take it to the track. Choose the available SS 1LE Track Performance Package ($7,000) and you’ll cut corners with precision. The package includes Satin Black design elements — front splitter, hood wrap, and rear blade spoiler. You’ll also find 20-inch Satin Graphite forged aluminum wheels wrapped within Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar tires. A performance-tuned suspension, magnetic ride control, an electronic limited-slip differential, Brembo front and rear performance antilock brakes, and dual-mode exhaust are included. Inside, front Recaro bucket seats, sueded steering wheel and shift knob cover, and a head-up display round-out this package.

4. You’ll find standard driver-assist features on the 2SS. You have to opt for the Camaro 2SS to enjoy certain safety features not offered with the 1SS. These include rear park assist, rear cross-traffic alert, side blind zone alert with lane change alert and forward collision alert (coupe only). All models have a rear-vision camera; the 2SS has a rear camera mirror.

Driving Impressions: 2019 Camaro SS

There are cars and then there are driver’s cars. The Camaro fits the latter category sublimely, especially in SS guise and above. This is no slap against the turbo and V6 models, rather it is a strong affirmation of what Chevrolet brings to the table with its sports coupe.

And the table is set with a performance coupe that’s second to none.

My test model had the standard V8 engine paired with the automatic transmission. I could have groused, given that the smooth-shifting manual wasn’t presented. But its omission gave me the opportunity to evaluate the new powertrain pairing. In fact, the current transmission acquitted itself beautifully.

On ignition, the engine rumbled and sent out a moderate bellow through its two exhaust tips. Move through the drive modes (tour, sport, and track) and the clamor increases. The same can be said for the weight of the steering wheel and the suspension system — the Camaro SS simply becomes a more potent machine with its advanced settings selected.

Move away from a dead stop and the SS immediately shows what it’s made of. The engine responds with copious amounts of power and keeps delivering as it quickly moves the Camaro forward.

At wide-open throttle, the burly V8 roars and sends this sports coupe rocketing down the road. On the straightaway, the SS is right at home. On twisty back roads, it is nimble and compliant. The steering wheel felt fantastic in my hands— it is as accurate as it is agile.

The Camaro dives into corners with confidence and leaves them with ease. Its big tires, rapidly adjusting suspension system, and limited-slip differential join forces to keep this vehicle planted.

There are also a few fun features of note with this Camaro. For instance, the lift-foot gear-hold mode. Here, if you’re navigation twist roads, simply tap the gas pedal and the transmission stays in gear. The transmission will immediately drop to third gear and hold it while taking your tight turn. It’ll upshift just as you finish your final corner and head straight down the road with the full force of the engine powered up. The other fun feature is launch control and line lock. Here, you get to optimize your 0-60 mph time, which should come in around four seconds.

Auto Trends Recommends

If performance is high on your list, then the SS is where you’ll begin your Camaro search. The good news is that 1SS coupe begins at $37,995; the convertible clocks in at $43,995. The packages are relatively light on the 1SS, but much more thorough beginning with the 2SS.

Consider the supercharged V8 and your starting price comes in at $64,695 for the coupe and $70,695 for the convertible. Both are ZL1 models, which means you get everything from the SS trims and add in every available embellishment.

We recommend the 2SS trim as it brings in such features as illuminated kick plates, heated and ventilated leather-trimmed front seats with power control, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, dual-zone climate control, a Bose audio package, and driver-assist technologies. Even without a single upgrade, your price is $42,995. Consider a few performance and appearance upgrades and your final price should come in around $45,000.

In all, the 2019 Camaro remains an excellent representation of what we want in a modern muscle car, even a sports car. Its aggressive looks, the variety of powertrain choices, sports cockpit, and advanced technologies match up well in a small, but a highly competitive segment.

Audi Q7: Benchmark for the Luxury Set

The SUV craze is in full swing and it is almost hard to remember when cars were once the dominant body style. But consumers are voting with their wallets and utility vehicles as well as those that manufacturer them — they are the winners.

Audi has built SUVs since 2005 when the Q7 went on sale. Since then, the German luxury marque has added several more model lines, including performance variants and the brand’s first all-electric model.

The first-generation Q7 spans the 2006 to 2015 model years, while the current model arrived in 2017. There was no 2016 model.

2019 Audi Q7 Overview

Audi offers the 2019 Q7 in Premium ($53,550), Premium Plus ($56,900), and Prestige ($68,700) trims. Add $995 for the destination charge. All models come with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive. Upgrade to the supercharged V6 and add $6,400 to your cost. You’ll also find multiple package options across the Q7 range.

For 2019, integrated navigation is standard across the model line. The available Convenience Package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The middle-tier Premium Plus model gains standard LED headlights, wireless charging and Audi’s nifty Virtual Cockpit.

A Matter of Design

The Audi Q7 has always served as the design benchmark for the brand’s widening portfolio of utility vehicles. Its bold grille and sleek lighting elements offer a nice contrast to the profile with its pretty sheet metal, subdued curves and gently falling roofline. Even the rear view doesn’t do much to stand out like the front. Wraparound tail lamps with LED accent lights, rear fog lights, and dual exhaust ports are noteworthy elements.

Inside, the cabin is large, but not huge by any stretch. The first two rows supply ample room for five adults. The last row is best used by youngsters. We found the VW Atlas offers better access and more room in the third row than the Q7, but these vehicles are not the same.

Audi never disappoints in the fit and finish as well as the quality of materials used to outfit its cabins. The driving position is adjustable, comfortable and offers excellent sight lines. Knobs and switches are clearly laid out and the feel is upscale. Fine leathers dress the cabin with beautiful inlays completing the look.

As for cargo space, this is the Q7’s most significant weakness. The standard space is quite small and is only large enough to house a few packages side by side. Even with the seats folded, competing models simply offer more room.

Safety & Technology

Generally, the Audi Q7 meets stringent crashworthiness standards. The only demerit identified by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) is the standard headlights. That’s not unusual as the IIHS continues to raise the bar in all things lighting. In any case, when you move beyond the base model with its Xenon headlights, you’ll find full LED headlights.

Beyond a suite of airbags and the usual stability and traction control technologies, you’ll find a rearview camera with the standard Q7. To get such features a side assist and rear cross-traffic assist, you’ll upgrade to the Convenience Package on the base model. A Driver Assist Package becomes available on the middle trim and adds such features as high beam assist, active lane assist, collision avoidance assist, and adaptive cruise control. The available all-wheel steering shows up on the top trim’s Adaptive Chassis Package.

As for infotainment and technology, the Audi Q7 has a 10-speaker audio system with a CD player and MP3 playback capability. You’ll also find Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto smartphone compatibility, two USB ports, and navigation. Upgrades include a 19-speaker Bose audio system or a Bang & Olufsen 3D Advanced Sound System. Other available features include wireless charging and a head-up display.

On the Road

Audi offers a pair of gasoline engine choices to motivate the Q7. All models come with a standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Upgrading to the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 delivers 325 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Both engines send power to all four wheels by means of an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Step-off acceleration is good with the base engine and great with the V6. The turbos kick in with very little acceleration, while the supercharger bangs out power from the onset. On the open road, the gap between the two engine choices closes as the turbo delivers generous wide-open power.

Regardless of engine choice, the Q7 supplies agile steering, confident handling, and a comfortable ride. The standard all-wheel-drive system supplies a strong edge here and works best in Dynamic mode where faster reflexes and superior roll control is at work. The transmission does its part by serving up the right gear for the moment. In any case, Audi’s system delivers 40 percent of its power to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear wheels under standard conditions. When the “quattro” all-wheel-drive system detects changes in grip, as much as 70 percent of the power shifts to the front wheels or up to 85 percent to the rear wheels.

Auto Trends Recommends

Don’t immediately dismiss the turbocharged four-cylinder engine if you’re considering the Q7. We’ve driven with it in a variety of applications, including in the A6 sedan. This engine offers more than adequate power and should perform likewise in the Q7.

That said, if you routinely carry a full contingent of passengers and related gear, then upgrading to the supercharged V6 is certainly an option. A $6,400 cost increase at that. Regardless, we think the base model is a fine place to begin your search. Upgrades to consider include Convenience ($850), Cold Weather ($750), and Towing ($650) packages, bringing your final price to $63,195.

The V60 is all new and handsomely designed at that.

Just as some manufacturers are distancing themselves from cars, Volvo is embracing them. Further, these car models are not just sedans, but wagons. Indeed, this Swedish automaker offers not one, but two wagon models, including the all-new 2019 V60.

No, Volvo isn’t neglecting SUVs — you’ll find three lines in the brand’s portfolio. Presently, the automaker is also offering two wagons and a pair of sedans, giving it seven model lines. There isn’t a Volvo coupe or sports car to be found, as four-door models comprise the entire lineup.

2019 Volvo V60

2019 Volvo V60 Overview

The 2019 Volvo V60 launches this model’s second generation, replacing the previous model which debuted in 2015. The latest model is based on Volvo’s common modular architecture, which it shares with every other current Volvo model. The V60 wagon is closely aligned with the S60 sedan and the XC60 utility vehicle.

Volvo offers the 2019 V60 in Momentum ($38,900), R-Design ($43,900), and Inscription ($49,400) trims. From there, Volvo divides the product line between T5 FWD (front-wheel drive) and T6 AWD (all-wheel drive) choices, with prices increasing by $4,500 for the latter.

2019 Volvo V60There is a difference in powertrains too as the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is turbocharged with the first choice and both turbocharged and supercharged with the second choice. All models benefit from an eight-speed automatic transmission.

You’ll find ample package offerings with each V60 trim. Base models offer a Heated Front Seats & Heated Steering Wheel Package ($750) and a Premium Package ($2,050, with a rearview mirror compass, automatic dimming mirrors, retractable side mirrors, front & rear park assist, a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert and autobrake, keyless entry, a hands-free power liftgate, and Homelink. Volvo also bundles these two under an Advanced Package ($2,500).

There is also a Multimedia Package ($2,500, with a 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, navigation and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Volvo concludes the Momentum model’s package offerings with a Linear Lime Deco Inlay Package ($600), which adds footwell lights, mood lights and puddle lamps. The cabin is also dressed in eye-popping linear lime deco inlays.

If you select the mid-grade R-Design trim, you’ll find one package choice, the Advanced Package ($2,500). The top-trim Inscription offers a Heated Rear Seats & Heated Steering Wheel Package ($750) and the Advanced Package ($750). You’ll also find an exclusive-to-the-trim Luxury Seat Package ($2,200, backrest massage front seats, power-adjustable side support for the front seats, and ventilated front seats with your choice of one of four Nappa leather colors and patterns).

Design Highlights

Gone is the boxy look of previous Volvo models. The new V60 matches quite well with the S60 sedan from the front bumper to the C pillar (behind the rear seats). A pronounced grille with Volvo’s trademark insignia kicks things off, but the drama quotient is only raised with the standard LED headlights with Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights. This makes for an eye-catching look and the V60 wears it well.

2019 Volvo V60With the V60, Volvo makes a tremendous effort to not make the V60 look like your typical wagon. Sure, the overall look is just that, but with luscious curves, distinct lines and a robust stance, this isn’t anything like your Ford Country Squire of long ago.

Design elements from other Volvo models are apparent here, including the oversized hooked tail lamps. The look is at once practical as it is elegant, proving that a wagon is a viable option in a market crowded with crossovers.

2019 Volvo V60Inside, the cabin is open, with clean lines and pretty materials evident. As you would expect, driver controls are strategically placed and ergonomic. The front seats are firm, yet supportive and comfortable. The second-row seat offers ample legroom and is ideal for two adults. The driveline hump, however, makes it difficult to justify using the middle position. Storage capacity measures 29 cubic feet behind the second row or 48.2 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.

All models have full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, dual-zone climate control, and a load compartment cover. Upgrades include a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated seats, and a power-folding rear seat.

Safety & Technology

You’re not going to find every conceivable safety feature included with the Volvo V60, but they’re readily available. We already outlined the packages, which complete the safety offerings when chosen.

The standard trim offers lane keeping aid, oncoming lane mitigation, and roadside information. Upgrade to the R-Design trim and you’ll find a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert and automatic braking, rear collision warning, and front and rear park assist. At the Inscription level, the safety features are unchanged.

We like that Volvo doesn’t skimp on technologies as even the base model comes well equipped. Here, you’ll find a 9-inch display screen, one that’s far easier to use than the previous layout. You’ll also find a 10-speaker, 220-watt audio system, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto smartphone integration.

Upgrades include a navigation system and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

On the Road with the Volvo V60

With Volvo, you get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and nothing else. But it is what Volvo does with the engine that makes all difference. All T5 models have a turbocharger, while T6 models combine a supercharger and a turbocharger. The T8 trim isn’t available with the V60, at least not yet, but it builds on the T6 by adding hybrid technology for the strongest model yet.

Volvo’s powertrain approach isn’t right for everyone, but it is workable. An eight-speed automatic transmission is universal to all contemporary Volvo models.

Our equipped V60 T6 is an all-wheel-drive model packing 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which supplies more power than most V6 engines have and equal to V8 power from a generation ago. The supercharger-turbocharger combination means there isn’t any turbo lag present. Further, you’ll get ample front- and back-end boost, something no other forced-induction engine supplies.

With ample power at the ready, the only thing missing is the vroom of a robust naturally aspirated motor. Fortunately, Volvo doesn’t fake things with an electronically enhanced exhaust. The engine’s din, though, is noisy. The transmission shoots off gears with precision and steering is weighted. There is some body roll on twisty roads, but not to the level of some crossovers. The available electronically controlled shock absorbers are managed with a dial and four settings.

Parting Thoughts: 2019 Volvo V60

Do you need or want a wagon? Volvo certainly hopes so. There aren’t many manufacturers offering one, which makes a comparison difficult. We drove the Buick Regal TourX model earlier this year, but the Volvo is better equipped and a cut above in materials used.

Overall, the V60 finds an intriguing medium between the XC60 crossover and S60 sedan. Beginning in 2019, you’ll also find a “Cross Country” version, which features a one-inch higher profile and special underbody cladding. It has off-road connotations, but you’ll want to keep it on the road.

Polestar Powered: 2019 Volvo S60

Electrification is now a significant part of what Volvo is all about. Indeed, the Swedish automaker continues to roll out plug-in variants of its cars and crossovers, models which are more efficient but also pack a strong punch.

The 2019 Volvo S60 is one such model, an all-new entry-level sedan with a boosted four-cylinder engine and an available all-wheel-drive plug-in version. It launches this sedan’s third generation, once again putting this sedan in the crosshairs of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Other competitors include the Jaguar XE, Lexus IS, Lincoln MKZ, and the Infiniti Q50.

Thus, the challenge for Volvo is not only to do battle with a handful of strong competitors, but also to woo crossover-minded customers to the sedan. The task is daunting, but Volvo appears ready to engage.

2019 Volvo S60

Volvo’s plan to fully electrify its product line is on course as each new model now offers a plug-in version. Further, this automaker now offers just one gasoline engine in each of its models, a four-cylinder direct-injected workhorse with a displacement of 2.0 liters.

What Volvo does with this engine in each application makes all the difference. Its T5 models include a turbocharger and make 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed to the front wheels.

Volvo T6 models combine a supercharger with the turbocharger to increase the performance output to 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Here, power is sent to all four wheels.

At the top of the power spectrum is the all-wheel-drive T8, which utilizes the T6’s engine and adds twin electric motors attached to the front and rear axles. This particular arrangement raises the performance quotient to 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque

But wait…there is more! Indeed, the “more” is a Polestar variant of the T8, a model which sees a boost in performance to 415 horsepower. Lucky for me, it was the Polestar version that supplied me with neck-snapback performance for a week of surprisingly fun driving.

By the way, every S60 model has an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Son of a Volvo S90

The Volvo S60 looks a lot like a Volvo S90, the automaker’s flagship sedan. Notably, every new Volvo product is derived from a single global architecture, thus the S60 shares much with its larger counterpart.

This means the S60 has a look that is as elegant as the S90 with its bold grille marked with Volvo’s signature emblem. Moreover, most trims have “Thor’s hammer” accent lights, which add a dramatic touch wherever they’re present. Equally fetching, you’ll find statement-making “E-shaped” LED tail lamps.

Front to back, the S60 is muscular, yet elegant. Its tapered hood, firm shoulders, late-rising beltline, and notched rear deck suggests a model in motion without appearing overwrought. The Polestar trims add discreet badging, Brembo brakes and special rims to enhance that look.

Inside, the cabin is roomy with space for five. Yes, four is ideal, but five will find room in a pinch.

The S60’s interior aligns with the brand’s other cabins, delivering a distinct yet minimalistic look with choice materials and excellent fit and finish. The dashboard is layered, with pleasing lines and chrome touches and available wood trim adding visual interest. Soft-touch materials and leather dominate on the top-end model.

When it comes to seating, Volvo excels. The front seats are not simply supportive but crafted to hold your upper and lower back and torso in comfort. I’ve driven many luxury models with supposed comfortable seats, but few reach Volvo’s level of comfort.

As for the rear seat, perhaps the biggest challenge for some is legroom — unlucky for you if you’re tall and the front passengers are tall too. But this problem is common among competing models, not just Volvo.

Safety & Technology

Volvo is synonymous with safety, as its vehicles are typically at the forefront of all things passenger and pedestrian protection. But we won’t assume that everyone knows what this means, so a review of the standard and available safety features are in order.

Where the previous model earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), we believe the new model will attain the institute’s Top Safety Pick+ rating. That improvement is due largely to the active bending light technology, which improves lighting range, especially when cornering.

In any case, all 2019 S60 models come with such features as a lane keeping aid, oncoming lane mitigation, run-off road mitigation, collision mitigation support (rear), automatic braking after a collision, and blind spot information with rear cross-traffic alert.

An available package upgrade brings in Pilot Assist, which is a semi-autonomous drive system with adaptive cruise control. Some models make available a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert. In all, Volvo Cars continue to make safety a priority in every vehicle it builds.

On the tech front, we’ve seen Volvo make a strong improvement with its recent models. The automaker’s branded Sensus interface was at one time a mishmash of buttons, knobs and switches, a complex affair at first glance and difficult to learn moving forward.

The current iteration, however, is much simpler with its big, crisp touchscreen supplying at-the-ready commands and clear instructions. That doesn’t mean the system is simple through and through. For instance, you must use the panel to find the seat heating and heated steering wheel functions — they’re not front and center, but at least you can locate them and adjust accordingly.

Among the standard features are an audio package, Bluetooth connectivity, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, USB connections, and satellite radio. The list of upgrades includes a 360-degree surround-view camera, Harman Kardan or Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound audio packages, a head-up display, and navigation.

On the Road With a 2019 Volvo S60

I fully expected the S60 to deliver ample power, yet I was unprepared with how strong a performer this sedan is. Likely, most buyers will find the standard T5 or T6 models sufficiently pleasing, matching the best of their German counterparts with ease.

But the T8 brings this model to a whole new level, thanks mostly to electrification, which amplifies performance, but without the drama. This means the sedan is fast but relatively quiet as it moves about. And it operates somewhat in the vein of the Tesla Model S too, which delivers its power electrically. Thus, there is more of a pleasing hum accompanying the sedan when operating at full throttle — wholly unlike the raucous boom of the M3.

Polestar is Volvo’s performance division and with the enhanced T8 model the sedan has lightweight 19-inch wheels, firm dampers, and Brembo brakes. Credit Volvo with delivering weighted, yet crisp steering with remarkable handling.

Brake-based torque vectoring keeps this sedan planted on weaving roads and with up to half the engine’s torque sent to the rear axle, the power distribution is welcome. This Volvo grips well and only the slightest amount of understeer is present while engaging in enthusiastic driving.

Quite frankly, it is hard to believe that a four-cylinder engine powers this model. But with a supercharger, turbocharger and electrification joining in, boosted power makes it seem like a robust V8 is under the hood.

Parting Thoughts: 2019 Volvo S60

Volvo has come a long way in a few short years as it has replaced each of its current models with new ones, added a few additional variants, and overhauled its powertrain structure.

At some point, we’ll see fully electric Volvos joining its PHEV versions, perhaps powering some future models exclusively. At press time, we don’t have the fuel economy numbers of the S60 T8, but with judicious use of the plug-in option, 30 mpg seems likely. Further, when most of your trips are short, the electric side provides a 21-mile range, ensuring that your stops at the pumps are further apart.

Until recently, we didn’t mention Volvo products often when comparing European, Asian and American luxury models. But with a fresh product line enhanced by modern powertrains, advanced technologies, and pleasing interiors, we think Volvo is worthy of that comparison.
