Generation after generation, there has been a full-size Chevrolet truck available for consumer and work purposes. Indeed, the first Chevrolet truck was introduced in 1930 with the Silverado name appearing some 45 years later in certain trim levels of the C/K truck. In 1998, Silverado became the model name for this series of trucks that are sold in 1500, 2500 and 3500 designations. Available in 4×2 and 4×4 configurations, the Silverado seats three to six passengers, is sold in three cabin configurations and is available in short, standard and long bed configurations. The Silverado is a twin to the GMC Sierra and competes with the Ford F-150, the Ram 1500, the Nissan Titan and the Toyota Tundra.

Truck Styling

Every Chevrolet Silverado projects a strong stance with its massive grille, stacked quad headlamps, broad hood, strong shoulders and solid slab body. Like most full-size trucks, the Silverado offers various trim levels that add to this vehicle’s appearance. All models, however, feature oversized side mirrors, large wheel wells, body side moulding and a drop down rear tail gate with a step up bumper. Some models bring in a fancier grille, color-keyed mirrors and door handles, chrome wheels and other embellishments. Sold in regular, extended and crew cab arrangements with truck boxes ranging from 69.3 inches to 97.8 inches long. Standard 17-inch steel wheels can be upgraded to 18-inch aluminum or 20-inch chrome-clad wheels.

Engines and Transmissions

Four engine choices are available with the 2012 Chevrolet Silverado. A base 4.3-liter V6 gas engine is paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and available in the work truck (WT) edition only.

2013 Cadillac XTS Throws Down the Safety Gauntlet

February 13, 2012 by admin 3 Comments

All-new full-size luxury sedan debuts this spring.

GM Sensor Fusion
The 2013 Cadillac XTS may very well represent a precursor to autonomous driving. Sensor fusion technologies will become available this fall with full autonomous driving expected by the end of this decade.

The 2013 Cadillac XTS will be available in front- and all-wheel-drive when it goes on sale this spring. The new model replaces both the DTS and STS, which were retired last year. This fall, several months after the XTS becomes available, a Driver Assistance Package will be introduced. GM says that this package will be the first of its kind to employ sensor fusion, technology that enables integration of a broad range of sensing and positioning technologies that can alert drivers of road hazards and help them avoid crashes.

Advanced Safety Features

Specifically, the system’s use of radar, cameras and ultrasonic sensors enables advanced safety features, including:

  • Rear Automatic Braking
  • Full-Speed Range Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Intelligent Brake Assist
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Safety Alert Seat
  • Automatic Collision Preparation
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Adaptive Forward Lighting
  • Rear Vision Camera With Dynamic Guidelines
  • Head Up Display

Active Safety Systems

“We believe sensor fusion will enable future active safety systems to handle a greater number of inputs to provide 360 degrees of crash risk detection and enhanced driver assist features,” said Bakhtiar Litkouhi, GM Research and Development lab group manager for perception and vehicle control systems.

“A system that combines the strengths of multiple sensing technologies and expertly manages those inputs can provide advisory, warning, and control interventions to help drivers avoid collisions and save lives,” Litkouhi said.

Sensor Fusion Signals

Importantly, sensor fusion demonstrates a direction GM has been traveling for some time, at least in vehicle testing. Specifically, the automaker says that this technology represents a building block in the development of semi-autonomous and fully autonomous vehicles, which are designed to maintain lane position and adapt to traffic environments. Although it doesn’t fully integrate the technology, it could prove to be a gateway to semi and fully autonomous driving that is expected to be introduced by the end of this decade.

GM is a proven leader in autonomous driving technology too, as the automaker won the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Urban Challenge competition in 2007 with its fully autonomous Chevrolet Tahoe. That vehicle traveled approximately 60 miles in six hours in urban traffic, navigating through busy intersections and making multiple stops at stop signs and at traffic lights. GM has also been working on EN-V or electric networked-vehicle in China, collaborating with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. to develop autonomous electric vehicles that carry two people and light cargo. The EN-V uses global positioning system technology to connect autonomously while still offering manual driving capabilities.

The only drawback right now is that skyscrapers can interfere with GPS technology, as tall buildings can interrupt signals in certain urban locations. However, GPS combined with multiple sensors and linking technologies between vehicles and perhaps fixed on top of light poles on city streets, might eliminate these gaps.

Customer Choice

For customers interested in the XTS and the new technology, they’ll want to put off their purchase until this fall. When the XTS does arrive this spring, it’ll be loaded with technologies including Cadillac CUE, but its sensor fusion safety technologies wont arrive until after this five-passenger sedan makes its debut.

Volkswagen Golf R Delivers 256 Horsepower

February 13, 2012 by admin 2 Comments

Finally, Volkswagen introduces a Golf model that offers better performance than the GTI. We say finally because for the last three years rumors of the Golf R’s arrival on North American shores have surfaced several times only to disappear beneath a wave of denials.

AWD Golf R

Well, the all-wheel-drive Volkswagen Golf R is here and the what this car offers is the fastest Golf model ever. This model offers a wider look than the GTI with its three air intakes, its aero side sills and its rear dual center exhaust. The Golf R comes with LED daytime running lights, Bi-Xenon headlights with advanced front-lighting system — shifting up to 15 degrees when operating, enabling you to see around corners better — and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Volkswagen Golf RInside, the Golf R features a unique instrument panel, a multi-function leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, sport alloy pedals and top sport seats with leather seating surfaces. Bluetooth technology, a Dynaudio premium sound system, a Touchscreen premium VIII sound system and RNS 315 touchscreen navigation are standard.

Golf R Performance

But we all know that it the Golf R’s performance cred that draws everyone to this model that starts at $33,990 for the two-door and $36,090 with the four-door. Those two extra doors also include a sunroof and navigation, but as you might imagine you’re still paying a lot of money for a subcompact street hummer.

Under the hood is where all of the action is. That’s because Volkswagen uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that produces 256 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 243 foot-pounds of torque at 2,400 rpm. Paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, this engine takes premium grade gasoline for optimum performance and is EPA rated at 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway.

No DSG

Motor Trend says that the Golf R should go from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. With the dual clutch gearbox you can see 5.3 seconds, but that transmission is not available on the left side of the pond. Yes, enthusiasts are bummed that the DSG isn’t an available, something that may cost Volkswagen a few sales. The Mitsubishi Lancer EVO and Subaru Impreza WRX are two models competing with the Golf R, priced slightly higher, but in the case of the WRX offers a faster ride.

You get five color choices to choose from including Deep Black Pearl Metallic, Candy White, Carbon Steel Gray Metallic, Rising Blue Metallic and Tornado Red. Not sure if “Candy White” is a name that will appeal to too many buyers.

Entry Level Premium Sedan: 2013 Acura ILX

February 9, 2012 by admin 1 Comment

A hybrid option comes to Acura.

Up until now, Honda’s Acura brand has not had a hybrid model. That may seem strange given that Honda and Toyota both got started with hybrids at about the same time, and Toyota’s Lexus division has had hybrids for several years. The 2013 Acura ILX is about to change things for Honda’s premium brand, by introducing a “gateway” model to introduce a new group of shoppers to Acura including a hybrid edition.

All-New Model

As a gateway model, the Acura ILX is designed to appeal to Generation Y buyers who prize luxury, are seeking value and want a vehicle that reflects their concerns for the environment.

“First-time luxury buyers tend to place a high value on exterior styling, affordability and environmental issues, and that’s what we have created with the new Acura ILX,” said Jon Ikeda, head of the Acura Design Studio. “The strategy behind this new model is to position ILX as the first opportunity for many young buyers to enter the luxury market.”

Chicago Auto Show

Acura used the 2012 Chicago Auto Show to introduce its newest model. The 2013 Acura ILX will offer three powertrain choices starting with a 2.0-liter four cylinder engine that is rated at 150 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 140 foot-pounds of torque at 4,300 rpm. This engine is paired with a sequential shift 5-speed automatic transmission and will achieve an estimated 24 mpg city, 32 mpg highway.

Giving the ILX more zip is a 2.4-liter four cylinder engine that is rated at 201 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 170 foot-pounds of torque at 4,300 rpm. This engine is paired with a 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission and is expected to achieve 20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway.

Hybrid Drive System

Acura’s first use of a hybrid drive system will pair a 1.5-liter four cylinder engine with an Integrated Motor Assist electric motor. Combined the two systems will produce 111 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 127 foot-pounds of torque at range from 1,000 to 3,000 rpm. This model allows the engine to enter idle-mode at stops, effectively shutting down the engine until the gas pedal is engaged again. Acura expects that this model will get 35 mpg city, 38 mpg highway.

Amenities and Packages

The 2013 Acura ILX offer numerous sought after amenities. Keyless access with smart entry and push button start is standard. The way that this works is that a sensor in the driver’s key fob detects that person’s proximity and automatically unlocks the driver’s door with one tug of the door handle. Once inside, the drive need only close the door, buckle up, push the ignition button, engage the transmission and drive off.

A Pandora Internet radio interface is also featured and includes an SMS text message function for connectivity. Choose the available premium package and this model adds leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, an upgraded 360-watt stereo system and a rear view camera.

Its technology package adds to the premium package by bringing in an ELS Surround audio system along with AcuraLink Satellite Communication System, Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition, AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic with Traffic Rerouting, and AcuraLink Real-Time Weather with radar image maps. Its navigation system makes use of a 60-gig hard disk drive including 15 gigs that can be specifically allocated for music storage.

Made in the USA

Honda has yet to announce pricing for the Acura ILX which will go on sale this spring. The ILX will be manufactured solely by Honda Manufacturing Indiana, LLC (HMIN) at the company’s Greensburg, Ind., manufacturing plant, one of four manufacturing plants the Japanese automaker operates in the United States.
