Road Tripping With the 2014 Cadillac XTS VSport AWD Platinum

October 31, 2013 by admin 3 Comments

Cadillac sales are on an upward trajectory, with year-to-date US sales up by 25 percent over 2012 through Sept. It is one of the fastest growing luxury brands with new models such as its compact ATS and midsize CTS sedans receiving rave reviews. A third sedan, the XTS slots above the CTS, and is a front-wheel drive model with optional all-wheel drive. The Cadillac XTS VSport AWD Platinum was a recent weekly driver, a five passenger sedan that took our family of four on a 554-mile adventure on the winding mountain roads of western North Carolina.

Cadillac XTS Trim Levels

The 2014 Cadillac XTS is available in six trim levels: standard, luxury, premium, VSport premium, premium and VSport platinum. Its price ranges from $44,600 to $72,535, quite a span for one model. As tested, the XTS VSport AWD Platinum was priced from $69,095. Its white diamond tricoat finish and destination charge pushed the final price up to $71,015.

Vsport is not the V-Series. Cadillac has slotted this performance line below the V-Series, what seems destined for its American-styled models. Its European-inspired ATS and CTS models are likely to continue to offer V-Series variants.

You should consider the XTS as the replacement model for both the STS and DTS, Cadillac sedans that were retired in 2011. The STS was a rear-wheel drive sedan with optional all-wheel drive, the DTS was front-wheel drive only. Notably, the wheelbase of the XTS comes in at 111.7 inches, nearly three inches shorter than the 2014 Cadillac CTS. However, its overall length is six inches longer, thus the sedan can claim large vehicle status. It is built on the same platform underpinning the Buick LaCrosse.

What differentiates the XTS from the DTS is, well, just about everything. The XTS reflects current Cadillac design language with sharper angles, sweeping body lines and LED treatments. Inside, the latest technologies are applied including the Cadillac CUE infotainment system and an electronic instrument panel.

The tested model adds two features that make this model stand out: the Haldex all-wheel drive system and a twin turbocharged 3.6-liter V-6 engine. It is the first twin turbo from GM and it makes 410 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 369 foot-pounds of torque at 1,900 to 5,600 rpm. Cadillac pairs this 24-valve engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. The XTS has manual shifting capabilities with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters at the ready.

Luxuriously Appointed Cabin

To say that the Cadillac XTS is well-appointed may be an understatement. The test vehicle, of course, reflects the model lines top edition and convincingly demonstrates just what Cadillac can do with opulence.

For starters, the interior is bathed in ambient lighting, what provides a look that is at once soothing as it is elegant. The interior is draped in leather with perforated trim across all seating surfaces. Fine wood trim and chrome touches raise the luxury bar, but it just may be the electronic instrument panel and its customizable features that present the wow factor. It is a colorful display with three dials offering standard odometer, speedometer and trip information read outs. You can change that information to include vehicle range, fuel economy statistics, trip mapping and song information. Steering-wheel mounted controls make quick work of these changes.

Dominating the center stack is another screen, this one featuring Cadillac User Experience or CUE. It is the brands infotainment system, what controls the audio system, navigation and vehicle information. You can access this system by voice command or by touchscreen, the latter using swipes and other finger movements that tablet users understand. With a long trip ahead of us, I made a point to familiarize myself with the technology, finding it easy to use. Voice commands, however, were often misunderstood, a common complaint with these systems. Bluetooth connectivity (CUE can connect as many as 10 devices) worked out fine although there were two times when we had to disconnect and reconnect to get CUE to pick up the device. In all, CUE is a welcome respite from infotainment systems that are simply too complicated and are usually persistently buggy.

The Cadillac XTS driver is spoiled with numerous features that ensure ride comfort. This model is equipped with a tilt and telescoping steering column, a heated steering wheel, power adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, a much welcome drivers seat extender, and lumbar support. Two full days of long driving took no toll on this drivers body; the seat heating element kept my muscles relaxed.

Other features found in the Cadillac XTS VSport AWD Platinum include a 14-speaker Bose audio system, Sirius XM satellite radio, HD radio, a head-up display, OnStar, automatic windshield wipers, three-zone climate control, a 110-volt outlet, and front and rear parking assist. A 60/40 split folding bench seat was in the rear, with a pass through to the trunk. The outboard rear seats have a heating feature and both positions come with sunshades. A panoramic sunroof and a power rear window sunshade were also included.

Show and Tell

As much as the interior offered more creature comforts than imagined, what I wanted to know was how this vehicle performed on the road. The cabin and the XTS exterior embellishments are for show; the performance and handling are for tell. And tell it did.

First, the standard engine for the Cadillac XTS is a 3.6-liter V-6. There is nothing extraordinary about this engine, but it is a reliable motor that has been used across GMs product line for several years. For the XTS Vsport, the engine was modified to include a pair of turbochargers. And the improvement jacks up performance from 305-hp to 410-hp and boosts torque from 264 foot-pounds to 369. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Second, Cadillac outfitted the XTS with a Haldex all-wheel drive system. Haldex, owned by BorgWarner, brings in an electronic limited-slip differential, what transfers power from front to back and from side to side along its rear axle. Add in the HiPer strut front suspension and Magnetic Ride Control real time damping and you come away with a sedan that always feels under your control. The oversteering and understeering you sense with front- and rear-wheel drive models respectively is absent. The AWD system and suspension upgrades add 209 pounds to the XTS, but it isnt especially burdensome considering the performance gained.

On the Road

Our extensive road trip had us traveling from the relatively tame hills near Raleigh, NC, to the rolling mountain passes of the southern Appalachians, including sections of the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway from Wilkesboro to Linville. The parkway with its low speed limits gives you zero opportunity to push the XTS, necessitating a move over to state and local roads.

Press the pedal and the Cadillac XTS hits 60 mph in about five seconds. Thats laudable for a large sedan and entirely enjoyable too especially as it kept its nose straight the entire time. Thankfully, the local foliage conditions were past peak, thus the usual leaf peepers were mostly out of the way and not hindering my best efforts to push the sedan to reasonable (and somewhat law abiding) limits.

Each twist and every turn of the road kept my confidence up with me not minding the technological assists that moved power to the correct wheel at the right time. And to keep everyone safe, active cruise control was employed liberally to maintain a safe distance between other drivers and to bring this vehicle to an automatic stop.

Yes, the Cadillac XTS is a semi-autonomous vehicle with radar, cameras and ultrasonic sonars working to improve crash protection. Driving purists wont like the many alerts and warnings, but it was fun to test how these features worked including the automatic braking system. I personally dread the day when fully autonomous vehicles roll out, but semi-autonomous technology is useful provided that it isnt too intrusive.

Cadillac XTS Thoughts

So, the question I am often asked is this one, Would I buy vehicle X if I was in the market for one? Given my previous swooning for the CTS, I can tell you that the answer for the XTS is, no. But, that takes nothing away from the refined and thoroughly enjoyable Cadillac XTS. Instead, it points out this drivers preference for rear-wheel drive sedans.

In all, the XTS is a good replacement for the STS and DTS, and a positive addition to the ever expanding Cadillac line.

About the 2014 Kia Sportage

October 30, 2013 by admin 2 Comments

Kia’s compact SUV receives an update.

The Kia Sportage is a compact sport utility vehicle, a five-passenger front- or all-wheel drive model. The original Sportage made its debut in 1995 and the third generation model was introduced in 2010. Kia sells its smallest SUV in LX, EX and SX trim levels, a vehicle that receives several important updates for 2014.

2014 Kia Sportage
The refreshed 2014 Kia Sportage.

Kia Sportage Exterior Enhancements

Kia Sportage exterior changes for 2014 include a new grille design, available high intensity definition headlamps, LED rear tail lights and new wheel designs. New fog lamps were introduced to the Sportage EX. Every model is outfitted with body color mirrors and door handles; privacy glass is standard. Upper trim level models offer chrome side body trim, dual exhaust, and a unique grille design with the SX.

The Sportage sits on a 103.9-inch wheelbase and measures 174.8 inches long, 73.0 inches wide and 64.4 inches tall. It has a 6.8-inch ground clearance. This model weighs from 3,426 to 3,664 pounds, and has a 2,000-pound towing capacity. Standard 17-inch alloy wheels are set within all-season tires. Sportage EX and SX models are outfitted with 18-inch alloy wheels.

Cabin Touches

Across the board, every Kia Sportage provides standard rear ventilation and reclining outboard seats. Choose the EX edition and this model brings in standard heated front seats, an Infinity premium audio system, an automatic dimming mirror with Homelink, and heated outside mirrors. An available premium package adds ventilated front seats, a navigation system with SiriusXM Traffic, leather-trimmed seats, a panoramic sunroof, smart key with push-button start, and power-folding outside mirrors.

A 4.2-inch driver information screen is new for 2014. This model also gets enhanced UVO (telematic) eServices, what is now compatible with the navigation system. All models offer cruise control, electronically controlled side mirrors, front and rear cup holders, power accessories, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel column, and a cargo organizer. Trim level upgrades bring in a panoramic sunroof, power folding side mirrors, a premium audio package, a navigation system, heated mirrors, a cooling glove box and leather seating surfaces.

Kia Sportage Performance

The standard engine with the Kia Sportage EX and LX editions is a 2.4-liter four cylinder making 182 horsepower. This gasoline direct injection motor replaces a multi-port injection engine offered in 2013. This engine is paired with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission with manual shifting capabilities. Estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway with the front-wheel-drive model.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine powers the Sportage SX. This model makes 260 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 269 foot-pounds of torque at 1,850 to 3,000 rpm. This model is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway for the front-wheel-drive edition.

Handling and Safety Features

Every Kia Sportage is covered by a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, a five-year or 60,000-mile limited warranty, and a five-year or 100,000 rust warranty. A roadside assistance plan has drivers covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The Kia Sportage comes equipped with six airbags including dual front, dual front side and dual side curtain airbags. It is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes and has an anti-lock brake system, stability control, traction control, brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. Downhill brake control and hill start assist are also included.

Looking Ahead

Give Kia two more years and we’ll see its next generation Sportage debut. It is a competitive segment with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue and the Volkswagen Tiguan among its many rivals. Kia aims to stay relevant by maintaining its content and styling edge.

Auto Reliability: Audi, Volvo & GMC Move Up Says Consumer Reports

October 29, 2013 by admin 1 Comment

The Japanese automotive brands have long held the attention of Consumer Reports (CR), the independent magazine owned by the non-profit Consumers Union of Yonkers, NY. In its latest annual auto reliability rankings Toyota, Lexus and Acura garnered the top three spots. But, this year Audi, Volvo and GMC moved into its top-10 brand listings, loosening the chokehold on the top rankings that the Japanese makes have had over the past decade.

Acura RLX auto reliability is above average.

Annual Auto Reliability Report

CR released its 2013 Annual Auto Reliability report at a press conference on Monday before the Automotive Press Association in Detroit. Audi moved up four spots as three of its models — the A6 sedan, Allroad wagon and Q7 sport utility vehicle — scored “much better than average” reliability. The all-new 2014 Subaru Forester SUV received the top reliability score among all models while the Ford C-Max Energi received its worst score. The full report appears in CR’s December issue that goes on sale on Nov. 5, 2013.

The Volvo brand moved up six spots since the last survey to finish in the No. 7 position. GMC finished in the No. 9 position, up three spots. Mazda took fifth place, one of seven Japanese brands to crack the top 10. All Mazda models received an average or better reliability score; the same could be said for Toyota and Infiniti. Only Lexus and Acura fielded above-average reliability scores across their entire model lines.

Infotainment System Problems

CR continues to find fault with touch-screen infotainments systems, however. It found that many systems are buggy and are prone to screen freezing and response lag. Some systems do not recognize voice commands or may reject a cell phone or an MP3 player. Such systems were the top compliant consumers mentioned among the 17 problem areas it surveys.

Auto reliability survey: 2013.

Infotainment systems continue to perform poorly in CR surveys.

Both hybrids and pure electric vehicles have been performing well in recent auto reliability surveys. This year CR found that the Honda CR-Z, Toyota’s Prius and Prius C, and the Lexus ES 300h were the top hybrid models. Among electric vehicles, the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S did very well. Two hybrids from Ford, the C-Max and Fusion, finished below average.

Only one Ford model, the F-150, received CR’s “recommendation” rating. Seven models finished average while two-thirds of the 34 tested Ford and Lincoln models received below average rankings. CR cited both the MyFord Touch infotainment system and EcoBoost V-6 engine as reliability issues that pulled down the scores of multiple Ford Motor Company models.

Chrysler, Kia and Hyundai

Chrysler’s star model is the 300C, scoring above average in the latest survey. In 2012, CR called the Chrysler 300C its most troublesome vehicle. Two Jeep models, the Compass and Patriot, didn’t score as well as they had in recent years, while the Jeep Grand Cherokee also “has fallen well below average reliability.”

Chrysler 300C auto reliability.

The Chrysler 300C may be one the most improved models.

In recent years, the Korean car manufacturers have been making great strides and appeared ready to challenge the Japanese leaders in reliability. Kia is ranked ahead of Hyundai, but still finished in the middle of all brands surveyed. Hyundai, however, fell to 21st place. Cracking the top 10 may take some time especially as other non-Japanese brands continue to improve.

German Manufacturers Scored

Mercedes-Benz and BMW, unlike Audi, are outside of the top 10, but both German brands have models that offer average or better than average reliability. A few problems remain, however, with CR citing the diesel-powered M-Class and the 335i and turbocharged X6 six cylinder as “problem children.” CR also called Volkswagen’s Beetle GTI and Touareg “trouble prone” and said that all three Mini models surveyed made a “very poor showing.”

Consumer Reports’ surveys have influenced the buying decisions of consumers for generations. Its findings and tests have caused manufacturers to recalibrate substandard products and find ways to improved technologies that are difficult to use or what are perceived as buggy.

White Remains the Top Color Choice For New Cars

October 28, 2013 by admin 1 Comment

The most popular new car color is white according to PPG Industries. PPG is a leading coatings and speciality products company for the auto industry, releasing its latest annual automotive color trend data on Thurs.

Top Global Finishes

That data took a global approach to tracking car finish choices. Globally, white leads with one in four new vehicles adorned accordingly. Silver and black tied for second at 18 percent each followed by gray, red, natural hues, blue and green, the last five retaining the same share of popularity achieved in 2012.

In North America, the numbers came in at 21 percent white, 19 percent black, 17 percent gray and 15 percent silver followed by red, blue, natural hues and green. In South America, silver is the dominate color with one in three new vehicles sporting that finish. White at 29 percent, black at 13 percent and gray at 11 percent followed, with red, natural, blue, green and other colors bringing up the rear.

White remains the most popular color with PPG seeing “growth in the variety whites being offered to consumers,” noted Jane E. Harrington, PPG manager, color styling, automotive OEM (original equipment manufacturer) coatings.

Variations on the White Theme

Variations are also being used with silver, black and gray with manufacturers choosing colors to suit different vehicle types. Said Harrington, “Distinct effects such as micas, glass flakes, fine bright aluminum and hue-shifting pigments help them achieve this.”

Some colors are more popular with certain types of vehicles. Sport models are most likely to feature shades of blue and red, while gold and beige are used most in the minivan segment. Among luxury vehicles, 57 percent were gray with black metallic and white pearl used to create feature effect finishes. SUVs come in a variety of colors with various shades of red, blue, black and gray chosen almost evenly.

White, black, gray, silver, red

“Red” is a favorite sports car color.

PPG Colorography

PPG also tracks what colors will be new to the industry in the future. Looking ahead at 2016 and 2017 models, the company sees that color innovation is on the way. The company has done its part to further innovation by introducing more than 60 exterior shades or what its calls its “colorography,” a collection of five palettes:

Hi-Breed emphasizes the new design harmony between man and nature with a palette consisting of neutrals, pastels and bright hues such as Lapis, a brilliant gemstone blue that uses ANDARO® tint dispersions by PPG.

Mosaic is based on the wealth of artisan patterns, shapes and prints, as well as their strong colorations, and it includes colors such as Autumn, a vivid metallic orange with colored aluminum flake that evokes an image of fall foliage.

New Spirit reflects the primitive, natural colors of a desert sunset with shades such as Sunray, an intense yellow tri-coat color with a high-sparkle glass flake.

Magnifigance combines the words magnificent and elegance, and the palette recaptures elaborate styling details and opulent, regal colors for a post-recession world with colors such as Mystic Magenta, a vibrant purple with a unique hue-shift effect.

Theorem is a precise and minimal contemporary palette that uses rich brown, red and deep blue as accents for balanced neutrals such as Crisp Grey, a graphite color with a surprise highlight of green metallic.

Beyond Black

The auto industry has been testing and embracing new color trends as never before. That’s far different from the thinking long attributed to Henry Ford about the Model T where he supposedly said, “You can have any color as long as it’s black.” As many people know the Model T was sold in other colors, a fact that Automotive News has also confirmed.

On the Road With the 2013 Toyota Tundra Limited 4WD

October 25, 2013 by admin 8 Comments

Just weeks after testing the 2014 Toyota Tundra at a media event in Georgia and, lo and behold, a 2013 Tundra arrived as my weekly test drive vehicle. The 2013 model year was the final one for the second generation Tundra, while the 2014 model year begins its third generation.

No, our media wires had not crossed, rather what I got was a chance to examine the older edition and compare it with the new model. And the model that arrived in my drive was a Toyota Tundra Limited 4WD CrewMax edition, outfitted with a 5.7-liter V-8 engine, the most powerful motor in Toyotas entire line up.

2013 Toyota Tundra Limited
2013 Toyota Tundra Limited.

Toyota Tundra Limited: The Second Generation

And just so you know, the differences between second and third generation Tundras are slight. Toyota gave its big pickup truck an evolutionary update, keeping the same platform, engines and transmissions as the earlier model while giving the new truck a facelift and a fresh interior.

What the 2013 delivers is a model that balances its muscular slab side body with chrome embellishments across the grille, on the door handles and on the back of the side mirrors, and across the front and rear bumpers. The 2014 ups the chrome factor with a thicker layer on its fascia to provide a more menacing look. If I had to choose between the two models I would say that the 2013 provides a more balanced look while the 2014 has a bit too much chrome for my tastes.

2013 Toyota Tundra Limited

Beastly V-8 Performance

Toyota’s 5.7-liter V-8 is a beast. This engine roars to life and is designed to get the job done. It is paired with a sequential shift automatic transmission and makes 381 horsepower.

In this segment performance is king. The big V-8 tows up to 10,400 pounds in some models, reaching 9,800 pounds with the Limited 4WD. Add in its big payload numbers and the 2013 Toyota Tundra CrewMax 4WD moves 16,000 pounds 8 tons of people, all your gear and a trailer. The CrewMax is a full four-door model with a 5.5-foot bed.

2013 Toyota Tundra Limited

Cabin Seating

As outfitted, the CrewMax seated five people with two bucket seats up front and a split folding and reclining rear seat for three. An optional front bench seat is available, but you give up a lot of storage and comfort to squeeze in another person. Thats a sacrifice Tundra drivers may wish to avoid as the drivers seat is thick, supportive and as comfortable as an easy chair.

Moreover, Toyota sticks a highly useful storage compartment between the seats designed to hold hanging files, business cards and other office goodies. Big work trucks are often used as offices on wheels and with a two-tier glove box, in-door storage pockets, in-door flip down compartments, and overhead storage there is no lack of places to stash your electronic devices, supplies and valuables.

The rear seat is as roomy as you will get in this class. Put three big guys in the back and they’ll each have enough hip room to keep them apart with generous amounts of head, shoulder and leg room too. Indeed, I was able to take my 6-foot frame, sit in the middle rear position, cross my legs and avoid touching the rear facing center console. At this trim level, leather seating is standard throughout the cabin; the driver is treated to a 10-way power adjusted seat 4-way for the front passenger.

2nd Gen. Toyota Tundra Ends on a High Note

View manufacturer details and pricing

Interior and Exterior Amenities

Only the Platinum edition comes better equipped than the Limited. The equipment differences essentially come down to perforated leather trim, a center console gated shift lever, and an audio package upgrade. A voice activated navigation system is standard with the Platinum and optional with the Limited. As equipped, that option was included with the Limiteds available TRD Off-Road package.

2013 Toyota Tundra Limited

The Toyota Tundra Limited is outfitted with a tilt and telescoping steering wheel column, steering wheel mounted driver controls, cruise control, dual zone climate control, heated front seats, an Optitron instrument panel with analog and digital displays, and power accessories. This model also came equipped with a power sliding rear window, front map lights, three 120-volt outlets, five cup holders and eight drink holders. A six-speaker JBL audio system is standard; as part of the TRD package a 12-speaker audio system was included. Bluetooth connectivity, navigation, XM satellite radio, a rear view camera, a power tilt and slide moonroof with a sliding sunshade were also found.

On the outside the Tundra was outfitted with chrome tubular step rails, a bed step, a bed extender, a bedliner, a front skid plate and alloy wheel locks. The TRD package bumped the standard 17-inch wheels up to 18 inches and added five-spoke alloy wheels.

On the Road

The Toyota Tundra Limited 4WD is a stout pickup truck. Put the key in the ignition, fire up the engine, engage the transmission and you are ready to take on the world. Or at least your small part of it.

Its high profile, oversized side mirrors and rolling presence are enhanced by the sweet note emitting from its exhaust. Floor the accelerator and this trucks growl gives way to a roar, moving down the road with confidence and authority. Not once do you feel that you are fighting the steering nor do you experience the sensation that the suspension will disappoint you as you move off road. Its on road ride may not match a Lexus, but it is as good as you will find in an Avalon.

2013 Toyota Tundra Limited

With the model year changeover in progress as this report goes to press, the biggest decision you may have is deciding whether to go with a 2013 or a 2014 Toyota Tundra. Among manufacturers, Toyota is usually conservative with its incentives, but when it comes to big pickup trucks all players (i.e, Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ram 1500 and Nissan Titan) join in the fight for consumers, including the Tundra. Auto Trends has found that discounts on previous generation models are usually even higher as manufacturers seek to help clear dealer lots.

Subaru Legacy Delivers Quality and Reliability

October 24, 2013 by admin 3 Comments

The 2014 Subaru Legacy will likely not win many beauty pageants. However, its “looks” deficiency might not disappoint fans who are accustomed to driving a midsize sedan that is well built, reliable and safe. Indeed, like all other Subaru models, the Legacy routinely achieves top safety recognition, in part for its standard all-wheel drive layout that is found across the brand line except with the BRZ sports coupe.

2014 Subaru Legacy

Driven: Subaru Legacy

The Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited was a recent weekly driver, a vehicle that seats five people and comes nicely appointed. Where it lacks eye turning good looks, the Legacy provides well-mannered handling, decent acceleration and very good fuel economy for an all-wheel drive model.

2014 Subaru LegacySubaru outfits the Legacy with a standard 2.5-liter BOXERor horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine or an optional 3.6-liter V-6. The standard engine makes 173 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and generates 174 foot-pounds of torque at 4,100 rpm. Horsepower is well below the Chevrolet Malibu’s 196-hp and the Hyundai Sonata’s 190-hp ratings, but nearly equal with the Ford Fusion. A 256-hp V-6 can solve that problem, but you may find that the base engine is all that you need. Subaru pairs the four-cylinder with a continuously variable transmission and mates a five-speed automatic to the V-6.

2014 Subaru Legacy

You can get a 2014 Subaru Legacy for as low as $20,295. That base edition is the only one outfitted with a six-speed manual transmission and the navigation system is not available. The next level up is the 2.5i Premium followed by the 2.5i Sport and two “Limited” editions: one is for the four cylinder model (as tested) and the 3.6R Premium is for the V-6.

On the Road

We’ll look at the cabin amenities and styling later, first focusing on this vehicle’s driving dynamics. This is where the Subaru Legacy shines (with one exception) and where competitors should examine its success very carefully. Unfortunately, all-wheel drive is not standard in this segment — beyond the Subaru it is hard to find it elsewhere. The Suzuki Kizashi is no more, so that leaves just the Ford Fusion with its optional all-wheel drive and the Legacy in this segment.

The exception alluded to earlier is the Legacy’s continuously variable transmission (CVT). Although it provides both a fuel economy edge and is more cost-effective than an automatic, the noticeable “rubber band effect” is felt. That effect is apparent when you floor the gas pedal and the acceleration lags. You’ll still get up to speed, but the nagging lagging sensation is present nonetheless.

2014 Subaru Legacy

What Subaru does deliver is driving confidence. You can feel that advantage when taking to the open road and tackling some of twisty turns you love. Its symmetrical all-wheel-drive system provides continuous stability as power is sent to the wheels needing the most traction, notably in slippery conditions. Oversteering and understeering are also eliminated, problems apparent with rear- and front-wheel drive vehicles respectively.

Now, if you are a driving enthusiast you may “pfft” at my comments and that is a fair response. But remember in this segment there are no rear-wheel drive models, therefore the comparison should be with the Toyota Camrys, Honda Accords, Nissan Altimas, Hyundai Sonatas, Chevrolet Malibus, and Kia Optimas of this world. Don’t forget the Mazda6, Volkswagen’s Passat, the Chrysler 200, the Dodge Avenger, and the Fusion too. Besides, with safety in mind, handling and braking are two attributes Subaru shoppers prize.

Inside the Cabin

The Subaru Legacy cabin is bright, fairly spacious and comfortable. Its sight lines are very good — you can see front, side and back with very little obstruction. Indeed the rear roof pillars are not the big blind spots you find in some sedans with plenty of glass on either side to see what is coming your way. The 2.5i Limited offers leather seating and the driver’s seat has 10-way power adjustment. You get a tilt and telescoping steering wheel column to help you find the right position.

2014 Subaru LegacyThe front seats are comfortable and supportive; the rear seats offer good room for three with especially decent leg room. That rear area offers a fold down arm rest/cup holder; the outboard left seating section folds down to provide access to the trunk.

You may notice with the Subaru Legacy that its cabin layout is a familiar one. Look closely, especially to the left of the steering wheel column and below the instrument panel to find a few controls not typically found on most models. For one, the parking brake is operated by a button — push it in and the brake is activated; give it a pull and the parking brake is disengaged. Hill assist, stability control and a trunk release button are also present.

Subaru Legacy Panels and Audio

The Legacy 2.5i Limited comes with a few features you won’t find elsewhere. The instrument panels has a driver information display, which provides a full-color digital readout of your current mpg, your driving mode and trip information. It is flanked by two large analog dials for the odometer and the speedometer, and two smaller dials for engine temperature and a fuel gauge.

Another feature is the 440-watt, 9-speaker Harmon/Kardon audio system that rocks the house. Or in this case the Legacy’s interior. It includes an XM satellite radio subscription, web traffic reports, Aha entertainment and the usual suspects such as iPod control, a USB port and a CD player. As equipped, this model also brought in a moonroof package that added the navigation system and a rearview monitor.

Storage Areas

Beyond the glove box and center storage, the Subaru Legacy offers a few interesting twists on the tuck-it-away game. This model comes equipped with four cup holders and four in-door beverage holders. You also get in-door pockets and a netted front seat back pocket, but only on the passenger side.

Trunk storage is average for the class and adds two small nets on both sides of the trunk. Lift the floor up and you’ll find a handy compartmentalized sectional for stashing away small items. It sits on top of the full-size spare and might house emergency gear, beach items or your valuables.

Bland Styling Done Right

As far as its overall style goes, the Subaru Legacy might be characterized as bland. Its front end has a sporty look, but the headlamp design gives this vehicle an older look. Just as the Hyundai Sonata shook up the segment by introducing a radical design, Subaru has played it safe by delivering a mainstream sedan with its strength lying between its shiny wheels and in the safety cage that routinely racks up top awards every year. These are strong points that can offset its weaknesses, an advantage Subaru continues to enjoy as it expands its market share.

Consumer Reports: Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS 250 Fall Short

October 23, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

Two Japanese brands find themselves on opposite ends of the luxury segment with Lexus batting Mercedes-Benz and BMW for top honors while Infiniti has been weathering slumping sales. Both brands have something in common, however, and that is a pair of important new models. Lexus has its IS and Infiniti its Q50 with both having high hopes that these sedans would be well received. In recent testing, however, Consumer Reports has found each one wanting.

Rockingham Speedway -- Consumer Reports -- Lexus IS

The all-new Lexus IS line at the Rockingham Speedway.

Consumer Reports Ratings

Neither sedan has received the “recommended” rating that Consumer Reports (CR) bestows on its top-rated models. About the Infiniti Q50, CR gave the sedan a very good rating for its overall drive test, but called the driving experience “underwhelming” compared to the previous G37 model the sedan replaces.

CR criticized the CR250 for its poor fuel economy, steering, handling and ride comfort. The Lexus IS is sold in 250 (2.5-liter V-6) and 350 (3.5-liter V-6) editions, the latter not tested. CR says it omitted the IS 350 as 80 percent of the model line’s buyers choose the IS 250. The new model line replaces the previous generation model that was on the market for eight years.

The Infiniti G37 was the class leader of its segment, garnering the magazine’s top pick in six of the last seven years. The Infiniti Q50 was supposed to maintain that level, but CR says that the replacement model has “lost its way.” Notably, Infiniti is still selling the G37 for 2014 and has priced it lower than the new Q50. Infiniti has not said how long it will continue to produce both models.

Newly Release Models

Although neither sedan received the CR’s recommended rating, neither one would have qualified this year anyway as both models are too new. However, the low scoring for the IS 250 demonstrates that it wouldn’t have received the rating this year even if it was eligible.

Lexus was beaten out in the road test by other sport sedans including the Lincoln MKZ 2.0 EcoBoost, the Volvo S60 T5, the BMW 328i and the Mercedes-Benz C250. CR said that the IS 250 is “neither sporty nor luxurious,” noting that when equipped with optional all-wheel drive, the sedan lacked punch and gas mileage averaged just 21 mpg overall in the magazine’s tests.

About the Infiniti Q50, CR noted that the sedan is not as fun to drive as the G37. It blamed dull steering for delivering what it called “mundane handling,” effectively relieving the new model of its sport legacy. CR also cited the Q50’s inadequate ride and said that the sedan isn’t “particularly quiet.”

Like the Lexus, CR panned the Infiniti’s interior noting that cabin quality “is nothing special.” Both sedans received negative marks for technology — the Lexus for its “distracting mouse-like controller” for what manages the infotainment system and the Infiniti for its slow responding dual-screen controls. CR has taken a number of manufacturers to task for serving up complicated technologies that its believes consumers will have trouble grasping.

Reviews and Consumer Reaction

While automotive enthusiasts and press corps folk may disagree with CR’s findings, consumers often hang on to every word that the magazine writes or utters. Founded by Consumers Union in 1936, Consumer Reports has built a reputation as an independent consumer advocate and sometimes critic of the auto industry.

This writer spent some time with both the IS 250 and IS 350 at a Lexus-sponsored event in April. Track time at the Rockingham Speedway gave each person the chance to compare new and old models, with improvements apparent in the current model (See — At the Rock With the 2014 Lexus IS. Full reviews of both vehicles will be posted here as each one passes through the Auto Trends weekly fleet.

Tesla Motors Opens First North Carolina Supercharger Station

October 22, 2013 by admin 1 Comment

Electric vehicle maker extends its supercharger network.

Burlington, NC, may not be an instantly recognizable location for people outside of the Tarheel State, but it is a city that is strategically located halfway between Winston-Salem and Raleigh. It is also near where interstates 40 and 85 intersect, making it the ideal location for Tesla Motors to set up its very first supercharging station in the state. Tesla has done just that, choosing a parking lot at the Alamance Crossing mall where vehicle owners can quickly recharge their vehicles.

Tesla Supercharging Station

Extending the Range

The North Carolina station is located near the Carousel Luxury Cinemas complex. It features eight charging stalls and is open 24 hours a day. Tesla owners won’t find signage pointing them to the station, instead they’ll find it by means of an app.

When hooked up to the supercharging stall, a Tesla Model S can take in up to 120 kilowatts of power to obtain half a charge in just 20 minutes. And with it strategically located near shops and restaurants, owners can get a bite to eat and return ready to resume their trip.

Eight charging stalls stand as sentinels ready to serve.

Supercharger Station Assistance

Without access to a supercharger, Tesla Model S owners would be restricted to a maximum 265-mile driving range depending on the model. That’s much longer than other electric vehicles, but it does limit long distance travel.

To eliminate range anxiety, Tesla is installing superchargers along three major “highways” across North America. One will connect Vancouver to San Diego and a second one will connect Boston to Miami. The third one is its most ambitious project: providing supercharging stations to make it possible to drive from Los Angeles to New York City on electricity only.

Second North Carolina Station

On Tues., Auto Trends spoke with Patrick Jones, communications manager for Tesla Motors about the company’s vision. Jones said that the supercharging network will be completed by the end of this year with gaps filled in next year. Those gaps include connection points between other major cities. For example, from Chicago to Houston. In the meantime, a second North Carolina station is in progress and will open near Rocky Mount later this year.

Establishing a supercharging network requires a collaborative effort, something Tesla received with the assistance of CBL Properties, owner of the mall, electric supplier Duke Energy, and other partners. Said Jones, “We selected this location because there is a lot of shopping around. Customers can come, get out and go to Dillards, grab pizza or a burger while they plug in and charge and then get back on the road.” Jones noted that Tesla owners would be able to make it Charlotte, the largest city in the Carolinas, by recharging at its Burlington station.

A number of dignitaries including Burlington mayor Ronnie K. Wall, and city council member Celo Faucette were on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Duke Energy, the state of North Carolina, and Alamance County also sent representatives. Tesla owners, electric vehicle enthusiasts and members of the media populated the assembly of no more than 100 people.

Local stores are just steps away from the supercharging station.

Supercharger Station Partnership

CBL & Associates Properties Inc. is the owner of Alamance Crossing. This past June, CBL launched a partnership with Tesla Motors to install superchargers at five of its properties. Besides North Carolina, Tesla Supercharging stations will be built at CB Malls in Rockford, Ill., El Centro, Calif., Fort Meyers, Fla., and Port Orange, Fla.

About the 2014 Hyundai Tucson

October 22, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

New base engine powers Hyundai’s compact SUV.

Introduced in 2005, the Hyundai Tucson plunged the Korean automaker right into the middle of the very competitive small crossover utility vehicle segment. The Toyota RAV4, Honda’s CR-V and the Ford Escape were segment stalwarts, but the Tucson quickly found room by offering numerous convenience features as standard equipment. The big changes, however, came five years later when Hyundai applied the SUV version of its fluidic design to its second generation model. For 2014, the Hyundai Tucson has received a refreshing with new projector beam headlights and LED accents now standard.

2014 Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai’s Tuscon returns for 2014 with refreshed look.

Exterior Enhancements

Besides its front fascia enhancements, the 2014 Hyundai Tucson also comes with LED taillights, a shark-fin antenna with the Tucson Limited, and roof side rails with a panoramic sunroof. New 17-inch standard and 18-inch optional alloy wheel designs grace this CUV. This model is sold in GL, GLS and Limited editions.

Cabin Touches

The refreshed five-passenger Tucson gains several important interior updates including a 4.3-inch LCD touchscreen 160-watt, six-speaker audio system with a rearview camera. A Bluetooth hands-free phone system is now standard. The Tucson Limited now comes with Standard Blue Link and Hyundai Connected Care. An updated navigation system with a larger seven-inch touchscreen display is now available. That system also includes HD radio technology.

Steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls are now standard across the model line. A tilt and telescopic steering wheel is also found in every 2014 Hyundai Tucson. This model now receives cupholder illumination, new interior colors, and floor console mounted rear vents.

Hyundai Tucson Performance

As before, customers have a choice of 2.0- and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines. The next generation of the smaller engine is new for 2014 and is equipped with direct injection. It is rated at 164 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 151 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The larger engine makes 182 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 177 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. Both Tucson models are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting capabilities. Active ECO is standard, a driving mode that increases fuel efficiency by 5 to 7 percent.

Hyundai estimates that fuel economy will come in at 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway for the smaller engine and 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway for the larger engine. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available across the Tucson line.

Handling and Safety Features

The Tucson is outfitted with MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension. Coil springs at all four wheels and a selective damping system help to improve ride and handling. Hollow front and solid rear stabilizer bars are standard. This model also boasts greater turn angles and matches the Toyota RAV4’s turning circle at 34.7 feet while also beating its major competitors.

Like every model in this manufacturer’s fleet, the Hyundai Assurance protection system is included. It provides some of the best warranties in the auto industry including a 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle warranty that is also fully transferable and a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. Your Hyundai Tucson is also protected by a 5-year, unlimited miles roadside assistance plan.

Looking Ahead

The refreshed Hyundai Tucson provides an update that keeps this model highly relevant in a very tight segment. In addition to the models already mentioned, the Hyundai competes against the Nissan Rogue, the Mazda CX-5, Chevrolet’s Equinox, the Subaru Forester, and the Jeep Compass. Look for Hyundai to follow up with an all-new model in two years.

Special Service Dodge Durango Prepared For Civil Fleets

October 21, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

American automotive manufacturers provide select vehicles for civil fleets including police cars, ambulances and fire chief vehicles. These civil-oriented models are based on various production sedans and sport utility vehicles, and include a 2014 Dodge Durango Special Service model designed for fire, police and civil fleet customers. Last week, the Chrysler Group released information about its special-purpose Dodge Durango.

Dodge Durango Special Service Vehicle
Dodge rolls out a special service Durango.

The new model is being built at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit with orders being received now. The Durango is a crossover utility vehicle that shares its platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Special Service Engine Choices

Two engine choices are available with the special service Durango: a 3.6-liter V-6 making 290 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque and a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 making 360 horsepower and 390 foot-pounds of torque. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, helping to deliver upwards of a 15 percent fuel efficiency improvement over previous models. The HEMI also utilizes cylinder deactivation technology that shuts down four cylinders when operating at lower performance levels.

The V-6 special service model has a towing capacity of up to 6,200 pounds and a driving range of over 600 miles. It delivers up to 25 miles per gallon of regular grade gasoline. The V-8 engine can pull up to 7,400 pounds and also takes regular grade gasoline. This model can deliver up to 23 mpg.

The Dodge Durango Special Service model joins two other Chrysler Group products to serve government fleet customers: the Dodge Charger Pursuit sedan and the Ram 1500 Special Service truck. Peter Grady, Vice President of Network Development and Fleet Operations said, “The 2014 Dodge Durango Special Service model is a state-of-the-art resource for fleet customers.” He noted that it has “…been specifically designed for the demands and rigors of fleet duty.”

Dodge Durango Upgrades

That special duty capability is apparent with the multiple upgrades this vehicle has received including a heavy-duty battery, a 220-amp alternator, a heavy-duty water pump and engine cooler, a heavy-duty brake package and a load leveling system.

Inside, the cabin was designed to meet the needs of government fleet buyers. This model includes a programmable seven-inch display in the gauge cluster, a Uconnect infotainment five-inch touchscreen with voice command and Bluetooth, a media hub for USB, SD media card and auxiliary jack integration, and Bluetooth streaming audio. This model is also equipped with new LED daytime running lamps and rear race track tail lamps, the latter lasting longer than traditional bulbs in a bid to reduce maintenance costs.

Exclusive to the Durango Special Service model is a rear cargo area equipped with under floor storage compartments and side storage compartments. Other modifications include a special service headliner, a red and white interior dome lamp, and spot lamp wiring preparation. Unlike other Durango models, the special service edition does not include a third row seat. Instead, it has been deleted to free up cargo capacity. However, the second row controls for heating and cooling remain in place.

Durango Handling and Safety

Special service vehicle upgrades including a skid plate group for all-wheel drive models, a rear view back up camera, a trailer tow group, an engine block heater and Uconnect mobile access capability are available.

Chrysler says that the special service safety and security features number more than 60 and include stability control, traction control, hill start assist, electronic brake-force distribution, electronic roll mitigation and trailer sway control. Seat-mounted and side curtain airbags are standard; front-row active head restraints are also included. Every special service model is covered by a 5-year/100,000-mile fully transferrable powertrain warranty.
