About the 2014 Kia Sportage

Kia’s compact SUV receives an update.

The Kia Sportage is a compact sport utility vehicle, a five-passenger front- or all-wheel drive model. The original Sportage made its debut in 1995 and the third generation model was introduced in 2010. Kia sells its smallest SUV in LX, EX and SX trim levels, a vehicle that receives several important updates for 2014.

Kia Sportage Exterior Enhancements

Kia Sportage exterior changes for 2014 include a new grille design, available high intensity definition headlamps, LED rear tail lights and new wheel designs. New fog lamps were introduced to the Sportage EX. Every model is outfitted with body color mirrors and door handles; privacy glass is standard. Upper trim level models offer chrome side body trim, dual exhaust, and a unique grille design with the SX.

The Sportage sits on a 103.9-inch wheelbase and measures 174.8 inches long, 73.0 inches wide and 64.4 inches tall. It has a 6.8-inch ground clearance. This model weighs from 3,426 to 3,664 pounds, and has a 2,000-pound towing capacity. Standard 17-inch alloy wheels are set within all-season tires. Sportage EX and SX models are outfitted with 18-inch alloy wheels.

Cabin Touches

Across the board, every Kia Sportage provides standard rear ventilation and reclining outboard seats. Choose the EX edition and this model brings in standard heated front seats, an Infinity premium audio system, an automatic dimming mirror with Homelink, and heated outside mirrors. An available premium package adds ventilated front seats, a navigation system with SiriusXM Traffic, leather-trimmed seats, a panoramic sunroof, smart key with push-button start, and power-folding outside mirrors.

A 4.2-inch driver information screen is new for 2014. This model also gets enhanced UVO (telematic) eServices, what is now compatible with the navigation system. All models offer cruise control, electronically controlled side mirrors, front and rear cup holders, power accessories, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel column, and a cargo organizer. Trim level upgrades bring in a panoramic sunroof, power folding side mirrors, a premium audio package, a navigation system, heated mirrors, a cooling glove box and leather seating surfaces.

Kia Sportage Performance

The standard engine with the Kia Sportage EX and LX editions is a 2.4-liter four cylinder making 182 horsepower. This gasoline direct injection motor replaces a multi-port injection engine offered in 2013. This engine is paired with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission with manual shifting capabilities. Estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway with the front-wheel-drive model.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine powers the Sportage SX. This model makes 260 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 269 foot-pounds of torque at 1,850 to 3,000 rpm. This model is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway for the front-wheel-drive edition.

Handling and Safety Features

Every Kia Sportage is covered by a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, a five-year or 60,000-mile limited warranty, and a five-year or 100,000 rust warranty. A roadside assistance plan has drivers covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The Kia Sportage comes equipped with six airbags including dual front, dual front side and dual side curtain airbags. It is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes and has an anti-lock brake system, stability control, traction control, brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. Downhill brake control and hill start assist are also included.

Looking Ahead

Give Kia two more years and we’ll see its next generation Sportage debut. It is a competitive segment with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue and the Volkswagen Tiguan among its many rivals. Kia aims to stay relevant by maintaining its content and styling edge.
