About the 2015 Hyundai Elantra

October 31, 2014 by admin 2 Comments

Small Hyundai is big on value.

2014 Hyundai Elantra Limited

Some consumers are understandably shocked when they price a new vehicle. The average cost of a new car today is about $32,000, well beyond the affordability level for not a few shoppers. Still, that figure is just an average as there are cars that are priced well below and well above that number. Small cars, including compact sedans, are where much value can be found.

The compact segment has been getting a lot of attention lately and for several reasons. First, today’s compacts are about the size of midsize sedans that were built at the turn of the millennium. Second, such vehicles typically offer excellent fuel economy, with 40 mpg on the highway and beyond achievable. Third, a well-equipped compact can be had for about $25,000, with base prices starting around $17,000. Many amenities found in larger vehicles, including navigation systems, rear view cameras, premium audio systems and heated seats are available in this segment too.

2015 Hyundai Elantra

One of the better values among small cars is the Hyundai Elantra. I recently had a week with a 2014 edition, but instead of concentrating on that model, I thought we’d look at the current 2015 edition. Not that the 2014 model shouldn’t be considered if you buy one before the calendar year runs out — many shoppers want choices and there are far more 2015s available right now.

The Hyundai Elantra is one of the older model names from this Korean manufacturer. First introduced stateside in the early 1990s, the Elantra has gone through several generational changes since. The current iteration was introduced in 2011, so that means we’re coming toward the end of the fifth generation. Happily for new car shoppers, the current Elantra is still very relevant and should be considered if you’re shopping for a new car.

Fluidic Sculpture Design Language

There is something very familiar with the Elantra and that would be its “fluidic sculpture” outline, Hyundai’s current design language. The Sonata was the first model to introduce the look and nearly every Hyundai vehicle since has followed.

Some, including the Sonata and Genesis, have gone on to an updated version of the design, what brings in a distinctive fascia, strong profile lines, a sweeping roof line and a stylish rear deck. It makes for a higher end look, countering the traditional utilitarian manner this segment has long been known for. The Elantra comes equipped with standard 15-inch steel wheels; 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels are also available.

Inside, the high end look continues, highlighted by a sculptured center console, sporty instrumentation and plush materials. With a starting price of $17,250, this model offers very good value.

Speaking of value, Hyundai typically equips its vehicles better than the competition. Its pricing structure is near or slightly below what the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze and Nissan Sentra charge, with more “extras” standard.

Standard Equipment

Indeed, look at the base model and you get keyless entry, premium cloth seats, power windows, power door locks, heated side mirrors, air conditioning, a tilt and telescopic steering column, cruise control, center storage with a tray, front map lights with sunglass holder, a cargo area light, two 12-volt outlets and a 6-speaker audio system.

Take the top-of-the-line Limited edition and your Elantra is equipped with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather seats, a power driver’s seat, illuminated vanity mirrors, aluminum entrance sills for the front doors, steering wheel audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity, BlueLink telematics, heated front seats and an upgraded audio system.

Hyundai offers several package upgrades to enhance each model. The SE Popular Equipment Package brings in alloy wheels, fog lights, a touchscreen display, automatic headlamps, Bluetooth connectivity and illuminated vanity mirrors. The Style Package builds on the base package to deliver a tilt and slide sunroof, leather interior touches, projector beam headlamps with LED accents, chrome trim and black interior cloth.

For the Limited, choose the Ultimate Package and you get a navigation system with a 7-inch screen, Pandora Internet Radio, a 360-watt audio system, dual climate control and push button start. The Tech Package, available with the Sport, brings in the same amenities as the Ultimate Package and adds Hyundai’s Blue Link infotainment package.

Engines and Transmissions

Hyundai equips the base Elantra with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and pairs it with a 6-speed manual transmission. Add $1,000 to the base SE edition’s price and you get an automatic transmission. The Elantra Sport ($21,600) also comes with a manual transmission and is powered by a 2.0-liter engine. Get the automatic and you’ll pay an extra $1,000. The top-of-the-line Hyundai Elantra Limited is priced from $21,700 and is powered by the smaller engine and paired with the automatic transmission.

The standard engine is rated at 145 horsepower and 130 foot-pounds of torque. The Sport edition is rated at 173 horsepower and 164 foot-pounds of torque. Fuel economy comes in at 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway with the base engine paired with an automatic transmission. The Sport edition achieves 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway or 35 mpg on the highway with the automatic.

2014 Hyundai Elantra Limited

Driving Impressions

As equipped, the Hyundai Elantra Limited came with the smaller of the two four-cylinder engines. The base engine provides sufficient performance, although there were times when extra power would have been helpful, especially on the highway.

The Elantra offers good off the mark acceleration, average for the segment handling, and decent braking. For better handling and feel, the Sport brings in a larger front stabilizer bar and sport-tuned suspension. All models offer independent front suspension and a rear torsion axle suspension.

The driver’s seat is comfortable, fully supportive and all controls are within easy reach. Thankfully, there was very little drama with the telematics as the screen is easy to comprehend with knobs and switches at the ready. The rear seat offers excellent room for two and very good room for three. If you are looking at the Elantra as a family sedan and your children are young, you should be satisfied with what it offers.

Final Thoughts

The 2014 Hyundai Elantra earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ award. There is no reason why the current model won’t receive the same rating.

You should also know that Hyundai offers this model in coupe (discontinued 2017) and GT hatchback body styles, one of just a few manufacturers with several choices in this segment.

Ford Bets $5 Billion on Lincoln

October 30, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Lincoln gets another lease on life.

2015 Lincoln MKZ.
This Lincoln MKZ is just one example of a Ford-based model.

Ford’s Lincoln brand may have some life left in it after all. Last week, Reuters reported that Ford has committed to invest at least $5 billion in Lincoln over the next several years as well as to introduce an all-new modular platform for the brand and for select Ford products. Reuters also said that its previous CEO, Alan Mulally had considered shutting Lincoln or selling it. The new boss, Mark Fields, plans to revive Lincoln and has gained the backing of Bill Ford and other board members to carry out the initiative.

Lincoln Motor Company

The Lincoln Motor Company, purchased by Ford in 1922 and championed as the company’s luxury brand, has seen good times and bad times. The good times were as recently as 1998 when Lincoln held the top spot among luxury makes in the United States. Today, Lincoln sells far fewer models and is in eighth place, selling about half as many cars as its arch-rival, Cadillac.

Much of that neglect can be found in two areas: financial support and products.

Financially, the Ford Motor Company has provided $500 million or less in annual support. That amount covers all expenditures, including product development, engineering, tooling, facilities and related costs. Introducing a new platform alone typically costs at least $1 billion.

Ford, Lincoln Product Similarities

As for product, Ford has kept Lincoln’s costs to a minimum by building models that are based on Ford platforms. Look at any Lincoln product and there is a corresponding Ford model. For instance, the Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition are similar as are the MKX crossover and the Ford Edge. Over the past few years Ford has sought some differentiation, but the Lincoln MKZ is still closely related to the Ford Fusion. One of its most recent new models, the MKC crossover, is built on the Ford Escape’s platform. But at least it has its own skin and interior.

News of Ford’s additional investment in Lincoln follows the brand’s introduction to the Chinese market, with the first customer deliveries having already occurred this month. The United States and China will likely be Lincoln’s two largest markets going forward, with Ford estimating 300,000 annual global sales by 2020, an ambitious number that would nearly triple sales within five years.

D6 Modular Platform

The modular premium platform (dubbed D6) Ford has in mind for Lincoln would produce front-, rear- and all-wheel drive vehicles. Likely, its introduction is at least five years away and that means the current model line would be revived once before any new models roll out. Reuters says that the first model would be a midsize sedan followed by a crossover. That could mean replacements for the MKZ and MKT, the latter based on the platform underpinning the Ford Flex.

In the interim, replacements for the MKX crossover and MKS sedan will arrive in early 2015 and in early 2016 respectively. A stretched wheelbase version of the MKS is in the offing too, but is slated for the Chinese market only. Message board comments from Lincoln dealers and supporters expressed dismay that the US market isn’t being considered for the stretched model, underscoring what some see as continued neglect for the brand.

After all, with the Lincoln Town Car no longer produced, there is no model to fill its place. Lincoln has attempted to do so with the MKT crossover, but that effort has failed.

The Competitor Factor

That Ford wants to make good on its Lincoln revival is a step in the right direction. Whether it pulls it off is another matter, especially as its competitors continue to grow and produce the types of vehicles customers want.

Infotainment Systems Take a Beating in Latest Consumer Reports Survey

October 29, 2014 by admin 1 Comment

The Consumer Reports 2014 Annual Reliability Survey is out, what paints a highly critical and negative picture of in-car technologies, particularly infotainment systems. Such systems typically provide audio, information and navigation access, but often do not deliver as promised. Instead, users may find these systems confusing, unreliable or simply unworkable, leading Consumer Reports (CR) to say that they present a “growing reliability plague” for manufacturers.

Infiniti QX60

Consumer Reports took exception with the Infiniti QX60.

Problem First-Year Models

CR especially pointed to flaws found in first-year models for several brands, including Cadillac, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Fiat, Jeep and Ram, with each having numerous bugs and glitches in their infotainment systems. CR surveyed owners of more than 1.1 million new vehicles, identifying 17 problem areas. Topping the list were in-car electronics, easily outpacing consumer complaints in other areas.

As before, CR found that the Asian brands usually outperformed all others with the American brands finishing far down the pack. Most European brands were in the middle of the pack or toward the end. Audi, however, continues to excel, finishing in the fifth spot for the second consecutive year. Porsche took the ninth position.

Lexus, Toyota, Mazda and Honda nabbed the top four spots. Following Audi, Buick, Subaru, Scion, Porsche and Kia rounded out the top 10. Fiat Chrysler, however, took the last four spots of the 28 brands surveyed with Dodge, Ram, Jeep and Fiat rounding out the group.

And if you think technologies are the sole problem, CR insists otherwise. “Infotainment system problems generally don’t exist in a vacuum,” said Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports, “A close look at the results suggests that cars with a lot of in-car electronic issues usually have plenty of other troubles, too.”

Chrysler Defies the Odds With Strong Sales

Despite the apparent quality issues, Fiat Chrysler continues to thrive. Indeed, the Chrysler Group has experienced 54 consecutive months of year-over-year sales increases through Sept. 2014. Chrysler Group sales are up 15 percent for the year, nearly three times the industry average. The Chrysler Group is seeing Jeep sales up by 45 percent and Ram sales up by 25 percent for the year.

For its report, CR gathered data for 248 models, looking at 17 potential problem areas. From its survey it has been able to accurately point out future problems owners may have with their new vehicles as well as to spot trends.

One trend that isn’t boding well for Infiniti is the reliability of two of its models: the new Q50 sedans and the QX60 crossover. Both models have had their share of problems, causing Infiniti to take the largest plunge of any brand, falling from 6th place last year to the 20th position this year.

Improved Infotainment Systems

CR did find that some manufacturers are making changes that have made their infotainment systems easier to use. CR has criticized Ford and Lincoln for their technologies, but the two Ford Motor Company brands have made steady improvements ever since the organization slammed the 2011 Ford Explorer’s quality. While Ford rose three positions this year, Lincoln had the largest year-over-year increase of any brand, jumping 12 positions to the 15th spot.

Mercedes-Benz fell 11 spots on the heels of introducing its CLA-Class sedan and high-end S-Class. A few of its models, including the GLK utility vehicle and the E-Class V-6 sedan, outperformed the market.

Poor Performers by Segment

American manufacturers need to pay closer attention to certain segments where these vehicles are not performing up to par. CR found that the subcompact Chevy Sonic, the compact Chevy Cruze, the compact Ford Focus and the compact Dodge Dart turbo each performed below average. Large pickup trucks have been a problem too with the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and Ram 1500 each performing below average.

Toyota Moving Forward With Scion Sub-Brand

October 28, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

European Toyota Auris derived hatchback expected stateside.

Scion iM Concept.
The first teaser photo of an upcoming Scion concept.

Well, it seems like Toyota’s Scion sub-brand has some life left in it after all. Introduced more than a decade ago in a bid to help Toyota appeal to younger buyers, Scion initially bolstered sales, but has seen a sharp decline in recent years. This Generation Y marque has not kept up with changing consumer tastes and has been slow to introduce new models. That’s a recipe for declining sales, exacerbated further by giving Toyota dealers the option of not selling Scion products.

Not Killing Scion

With Scion on the ropes, Toyota could just as easily have killed off its niche player than to put in place plans to revive it. Toyota is going with the latter as it introduces a Scion iM concept at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show this November, a vehicle that could breathe fresh life into the brand. Toyota has shared very little about the concept, releasing a pair of teaser photos so far.

With so very little information to go on it is easy to make assumptions about a concept that most likely will become a production reality. Even so, that hasn’t stopped industry analysts from pointing to the Toyota Auris as the upcoming Scion product, a small hatchback based on the Corolla platform and sold in Europe. The Auris is recognized for its tight steering and sharp handling, due largely to its double wishbone suspension.

This second teaser shows more definition, including a sporty wheel.

Double Wishbone Suspension

A double wishbone suspension provides better wheel optimization through infinite adjustability, delivering low unsprung weight and improved negative camber. Considered by many as offering the best handling suspension design, you can find double wishbone suspensions on sports cars and in several compact models, including the Honda Civic. The system costs more than the usual MacPherson struts, but provides superior handling. For front-wheel drive models such as the Auris, that’s an edge driving enthusiasts demand.

Still, the Scion iM Concept must improve upon the Auris by delivering an exceptional model. The highly-respected British buying guide, WhatCar?, said of the Auris — “it’s pretty dull to drive.” The reviewers criticized its refinement, including the Auris’ cabin trim. They added: “The Toyota Auris is a decent car that should be painless to own. Unfortunately for Toyota, though, there are much, much better cars in this class.” Hopefully, the concept will point to a better car with corresponding improvements incorporated in the production model.

In Europe, Toyota sells the Auris with a standard 1.3-liter gasoline engine or optional 1.6-liter gasoline or 1.4-liter diesel engines. They also offer a hybrid version. Not one of those powertrain choices seems likely for the US. Instead, the Corolla’s current 1.8-liter four cylinder engine is a better choice, paired with a standard 6-speed manual or an optional continuously variable transmission. The hybrid is a slim possibility, but it won’t likely see the light of day as there has never been a Scion hybrid. So far, vehicle electrification has been reserved for the Toyota and Lexus brands only.

New Life for Scion

By bringing the Toyota Auris turned Scion iM to the US, Toyota would accomplish at least two things.

First, the new model would set the course for Scion’s revival. It might single-handedly burnish Scion’s image like no other model sold today.

Second, the iM could halt, even reverse, the departure of Toyota dealers not willing to carry Scion. If the model turns out to be a fairly decent performer as some contend that the Toyota Auris is, then no Toyota dealer would dare disappoint customers by saying, “We don’t sell Scion.” Toyota dealers that had dumped Scion might also beg headquarters to carry the sub-brand again, especially if additional new product follows.

Future Scion Plans

Beyond the iM, Toyota has other plans for Scion that may be announced within the next few months. Its iQ city car has been a poor seller with sales falling by nearly half year to date and may be cancelled. A rumored FR-S convertible may be given the green light or at least a turbocharged option for the sport coupe it builds with Subaru.

Sweet Dreams: 2015 Corvette Stingray

October 27, 2014 by admin 8 Comments

One glorious week with a C7.

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
Beyond compare: this “velocity yellow” paint scheme is super bright.

The seventh-generation Corvette (C7) may be GM’s best effort so far in this still young 21st century. The current interpretation of this iconic sports car made its debut in 2014 and has been pulling down well-deserved awards since. Officially known as the Corvette Stingray, for 2015 it receives several important updates. I had the privilege of spending a thrilling week behind the wheel of one during the heart of autumn, a specimen adorned in a fetching paint scheme that whoops, “Let’s drive!”

Corvette Stingray Exterior Overview

The current rendition of the classic Corvette is instantly recognized for what it is: a halo sports car for Chevrolet. This model also transcends the brand, putting forth its distinctive Corvette face and familiar muscular, low-to-the-ground stance. The most significant changes start from the front wheels on back with larger and additional vents, a tempered B-pillar and the inclusion of rear-quarter windows.

The hood and the roof are formed by carbon fiber, every body crease is more extraordinary than before and the front fascia takes on an even more pronounced, menacing look. The fresh look has been carefully translated to the rear with its own distinctive and aggressive tail lamp arrangement. The quad-centered exhaust pipes mean business, putting forth a symphony of cat-back bings, belches and booms that will both astonish and delight you.

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

There are many other touches the designers carefully considered when crafting this masterpiece. One example: the boomerang-shaped daytime running lights punctuate the front fascia, serving as twin exclamation points and, perhaps, a warning to all who see this sports car approaching in their rear view mirror.

An important side note: I have never been so followed, chased or otherwise stared down as I was in the Corvette Stingray. From the first day I had it to its departure, it seemed as if every sports car owner and pretender pulled up behind me, sat in my blind spot or beckoned me to a race. Passengers whipped out their smart phones, taking pictures and making calls, and one police officer suddenly appeared in my rear view mirror as I entered the highway, pulled along side me, but thankfully kept his blue lights off. The Corvette was the celebrity and I was simply the willing servant, performing my role dutifully and without complaint.

Build Your Corvette Stingray

There is no one-size-fits-all Corvette Stingray. Never has been and probably never will be. My weekly driver retailed from $53,000 (the price has since increased to $54,000 or $54,995 with destination charge) and listed for $67,445. That’s more than $13,000 in options, hardly unusual for any Corvette.

Indeed, it is doubtful that there is a base Corvette sitting on any dealer lot. During my week with the sports car, I talked fairly extensively with two new C7 owners who explained the process of ordering a model to their exact requirements. Definitely, you can take one home from the showroom floor — if available — more than likely you’ll want to outfit yours as you see fit.

Pull up the build and price configurator at Chevrolet.com and you’ll find both coupe and convertible body styles. The convertible is priced at $59,995, exactly $5,000 more than the coupe. Standard 1LT models may be upgraded to a Z51 performance package, adding $5,000 to the base price. Chevrolet prices the 2LT from $59,155 and the 3LT from $64,445.

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

As delivered, my weekly driver came with the following: a ZF1 appearance package ($1,995), a performance data and video recorder, including navigation ($1,795), an all-new for 2015 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters ($1,725), a multi-mode performance exhaust ($1,195), velocity yellow tint coat ($995) with matching yellow brake calipers ($595), black painted aluminum wheels (19 inches up front, 20 inches to the rear) for $495, sueded microfiber seat inserts ($395) and a carbon flash painted spoiler and side mirrors ($100).

The ZF1 appearance package brings in larger 5-split spoke silver-painted aluminum wheels, performance summer-only tires and a body-colored rear spoiler. In other words, the standard 18-inch wheels up front and 19-inch wheels to the rear get bumped up.

Engine and Transmissions

Every 2015 Corvette Stingray is powered by a 6.2-liter, 16-valve V-8 engine making 455 horsepower and 460 foot-pounds of torque. This naturally-aspirated engine is paired with a 7-speed TREMEC manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and an available limited-slip rear differential.

The new for 2015 automatic can move into manual mode for quick shifting on the track. Last year’s model offered a six-speed automatic. The manual provides rev-matching on both up- and down-shifts. Choose the Z51 performance package and your Corvette receives closer gear ratios for the manual, the electronically-controlled limited-slip differential, additional cooling features for the gearbox, brakes and the differential, larger brakes and Michelin run-flat summer tires.

EPA ratings come in at 16 mpg in the city (17 mpg for the manual) and 29 mpg on the highway for a combined 20 mpg. I averaged 20.3 mpg, driving for 469 miles and mostly open road driving at that. Credit a few things with helping this Corvette Stingray achieve its decent fuel economy numbers: cylinder deactivation, performance tires, a low coefficient of drag and a 3,298-pound curb weight.

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

A Look Around Inside

The voluptuous Corvette body comes with a beautiful interior too. The bucket seats are formed to hold you in place, providing the necessary support as your head snaps back when you’re blasting down the road. The leather seats are heated and cooled, providing lumbar support and ample movement despite a small area. The seats back up to the hatchback and it is at this point the roofline tapers.

The Corvette Stingray features a digitalized instrument panel with the tachometer centered prominently. To the left is a 205 mph speedometer; to the right are fuel and oil temperature gauges. As you would expect, a digital driver’s information center is found within the tachometer, what serves up such useful information as: engine hours, lifetime revs, fuel usage, fuel economy, trip information, average speed and then some.

I like the Corvette’s head up display for two reasons. First, because it is there and is a feature I enjoy on any car. Second, it can easily be moved to float above the hood at various heights. It includes your current speed, a tachometer and a G-meter for track mode. You’re piloting this jet and the HUD is your guide star.

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

A leather-wrapped electronic tilt and telescopic steering wheel comes with sport stitching and an extra thick grip. The center console is easily customizable and is also retractable. When deployed you have a hidden storage area large enough for your wallet or other valuables. It also has one of three USB ports; the other two are located in the center storage compartment. Buttons and knobs operate the audio system, itself controlled by voice command, if desired.

One area where I would like Corvette’s designers to make a change is in the area immediately to the right of the stick shifter. Instead of simply offering a concealed cigarette lighter, a place to hold a smartphone upright would be ideal. Bonus to the designers if they can still find a way to keep the lighter and provide a smartphone dock.

The other suggested change would involve the cup holders. As currently designed, if you place a pair of bottles in the holders, they will not stay in place if you step on the gas. I’ve seen much less expensive cars provide “grippable” cup holders. That same grip could be applied to the smart phone dock.

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

On the Road

There is just no way to appropriately describe the Corvette’s attributes. Its reputation precedes it and its swagger is legendary and well known. The Corvette is a dream car — a screamer for the back road or on the track. Or wherever else you can light her up without a blue light special in your rear view mirror.

What the Corvette does do is make you glad that you’re alive. Not simply alive either, but breathing in everything that this sensual four-wheeled monument to automotive craftsmanship puts out. It has a unique smell, likely a combination of its leather and carbon fiber. It also has a unique feel, what you control with a mode select dial located just aft of the stick shifter. You can choose E (economy), W (weather), T (touring), S (sport) or TR for track. I had it in sport mode 98 percent of the time, but turned off the accompanying stability control only once.

Push the start/stop ignition button and the Corvette Stingray lets out the first of many rumbles. The cat-back system immediately percolates and hums until you step on the gas. It is at varying speeds and actions when the exhaust note sings, ranging from a multi-octave moan to a symphonious outburst. Your right foot controls the four-pipe organ, venting it to varying degrees as you see fit.

The Corvette’s 50-50 weight ratio, low stance and wide track keeps this sports car hugging the road. On the straightaway you’ll hit 60 mph inside of four seconds with the automatic, slightly longer with the manual. Its electronic power steering, a bane for some driving purists, isn’t all that bad — the Corvette’s engineers worked diligently to increase system stiffness by moving the steering gear to the cradle and reinforcing the steering column. Take it on any twisty road with its share of rises and falls and you’ll enjoy the full benefit of involved driving.

Arriving Early 2015: Corvette Z06

As much as the Corvette Stingray is a hoot to drive, there is a segment of the fanboy/fangirl populace that demands more. As in a certain exclusiveness found only in a top-end, ultra-high performing model.

And that edition is the Corvette Z06, a model with a 1.7-liter Eaton R1740 TVS supercharger, providing 200,000 rpm of spin or 5,000 rpm more than the supercharger gracing the ZR1’s LS9 engine. The top-of-the-range Corvette is rated 650 horsepower and 650 foot-pounds of torque. Just imagine that!

Chevrolet says that the full-blown Z06 will come outfitted with larger and wider Michelin tires, massive Brembo brakes and enhanced rotors. Other goodies will set this model apart from the standard edition, what will go on sale in early 2015.

In the 2015 Corvette Stingray I gained a much greater appreciation for both the history and capabilities of this masterful sports car. I also discovered that the fan base for the Corvette is enormous with dreamers and aspirants joining owners in shared admiration for what is arguably GM’s best model.

Killed by Takata; Denied Access by the NHTSA

Two-thirds of the airbag recalls involve Honda vehicles.

Honda Accord.
This seventh generation Honda Accord is currently being recalled.

The news this week turned especially gruesome as the New York Times shared the account of a dying Florida woman lying in a hospital bed who appeared to have stab wounds in her neck. On further investigation, it was revealed that an airbag likely deployed, but also spewed forth pieces of metal shrapnel that eventually took her life.

Following the Times’ story the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) expanded its recall to include 7.8 million vehicles from 10 different manufacturers. Two-thirds of those recalls involve Honda models; every affected vehicle contains airbags furnished by Japanese parts supplier Takata.

NHTSA Website Goes Down

After issuing its announcement, the NHTSA’s website denied access to consumers seeking further information, specifically people attempting to verify whether their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) matched the latest recall. The search function was not working and was still experiencing problems through early Thursday. The NHTSA apologized for the downtime and also for supplying an earlier list that inaccurately included Nissan models not under recall. That list has since been updated and has been shared here.

Meanwhile, Takata and Honda are both facing a monumental public relations crisis as regulators confirm that the two companies had known about the airbag problem since 2004, what has resulted in two confirmed deaths and dozens of injuries. If confirmed, the Florida woman’s death would raise that toll to three.

Immediate Service Pushed

The NHTSA is urging consumers to take immediate action and have their cars serviced. However, some manufacturers do not have enough parts on hand — it could take weeks or longer before repairs are made. In the meantime manufacturers, such as Toyota, have said that owners of affected models would be notified by first-class mail this week to return their vehicles to their dealer for repairs.

Under the recall Toyota says that it “will replace the front passenger airbag inflator with a newly manufactured one.” However, if a replacement part is not available, the dealer has been instructed to disable the airbag and install a hang tag on the glove box to serve as a warning that the front passenger seat should not be occupied until the repair has been made.

Consumers Union Weighs In

Not everyone is satisfied with the NHTSA’s handling of the recall. Consumers Union, the advocacy arm of Consumer Reports, urged the government to expand the recall to cover vehicles beyond its current geographic area.

In a letter to NHTSA, George Slover, senior policy counsel for Consumers Union, wrote, “The recalls were originally focused on vehicles registered in areas with ‘high absolute humidity,’ but the dangers could be far broader. We believe it is essential to ensure the widest possible public awareness of this hazard, and for NHTSA, automakers, and suppliers to provide consumers with prompt and effective means to address the hazard.”

Beyond disabling airbags, Consumers Union has asked the NHTSA whether regulators were looking at other options such as providing loaner cars to owners or vouchers for rental cars. CU also pointed out that the recall process for the defective inflators began more than 18 months ago and asked the agency to explain what it was doing to ensure that car manufacturers, Takata and potential other suppliers were manufacturing and supplying “safe replacement parts for all cars that need them.”

Tens of Millions of Recalls

This year will go down as the year of the recall as more than 50 million vehicles have bee recalled to date. GM has recalled about half that many as it battles its own PR crisis. Even so, the automaker reported net income of $1.4 billion for the third quarter.

Green Car of the Year Finalists Announced

October 23, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Green Car of the Year award now in its eleventh year.

2015 Audi A3 -- Green Car of the Year Finalist

The Audi A3 is a Green Car of the Year finalist.

Think “green car” and your thoughts might turn to a variety of battery electric vehicles, including the Tesla Model S, the Ford Focus Electric and the Nissan Leaf. Not to be left out are an assortment of hybrid models such as the Toyota Prius, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, BMW i3, Infiniti’s Q50 hybrid and more.

Green cars, however, comprise a far greater number or types of vehicles than those with electric batteries. Indeed, today’s “clean diesels” are often recognized as are vehicles that run on natural gas or hydrogen. To that end, the Green Car Journal has announced the finalists for its 2015 Green Car of the Year award, with the winner to be named at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show next month.

2015 Green Car of the Year Award

The five finalists are: the Audi A3 TDI, BMW i3, Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel, Honda Fit, and the Volkswagen Golf. Only the BMW i3 is a pure electric vehicle, yet it can also be had as a hybrid. Only the BMW i3 is entirely new — the other four models are established players.

The Audi A3 TDI is an entry-level model, offered in standard front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. Auto Trends tested the gasoline AWD version last month — you can find our review here. The TDI is prized as it provides clean, turbo-diesel power and delivers an EPA-rated 31 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway for segment-best fuel economy.

New on the market is the BMW i3, a compact model powered by a 170-horsepower electric motor. It offers 80 miles of all-electric range and takes 3.5 hours to recharge. A gasoline motor serves as a range extender, allowing drivers to go 150 miles before recharging or adding gasoline. This model is prized for a number of other reasons too, including its unique style and lightweight carbon fiber body.

Who knew that a Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel is now available? The model is so new that GM announced it only on Monday. What we have with the Impala Bi-Fuel is a large sedan that runs on two fuel sources: straight gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG). What is particularly noteworthy about this rendition is that it switches to gasoline from natural gas when the CNG tank is empty. Drivers can also switch between fuel choices while in motion, simply by pushing a button.

Among subcompact models, the Honda Fit is one of the newest. It is a gas-only model now in its third generation and powered by a 1.5-liter “Earth Dreams” engine. Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology means various things depending on the vehicle marketed. With a gasoline engine, Honda says it “…realizes top level driving performance and fuel efficiency.” That translates to 33 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway for its most efficient version.

The Volkswagen Golf needs no introduction. It is a subcompact model and one of the best selling vehicles of all time. Powered by gasoline or diesel engines, the VW Golf is highly efficient and rated as high as 45 mpg on the highway when outfitted with diesel engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. An all-electric drive version is available in limited areas as well.

The Jury

The Green Car of the Year Award was introduced in 2005 and relies on a panel of jurists including Jay Leno. The remaining jurists are composed of leaders in the field of environmentalism and efficiency including Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of Ocean Futures Society; Matt Petersen, board member of Global Green USA; Dr. Alan Lloyd, President Emeritus of the International Council on Clean Transportation; Mindy Lubber, President of CERES; and Kateri Callahan, President of the Alliance to Save Energy.

The journal’s editors consider a wide variety of vehicles initially before settling on five finalists “recognized for their achievements in raising the bar in environmental performance.” It is then up to the jurists to decide with the winner announced on Nov. 20.

New Acura ILX Set for Los Angeles Debut

October 22, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Smallest Acura set for a big refresh.

2016 Acura ILX
A hint of what the 2016 Acura ILX will look like.

Among entry level premium models, the Acura ILX has found its place in the market. Its sales, however, are down by 15.8 percent for the year through Sept. for a model that is clearly overmatched by competing vehicles, including the Buick Verano, Lexus IS250, Audi A3 and the Mercedes-Benz CLA250.

Hybrid Model Canceled

Introduced in gas and hybrid configurations for the 2013 model year, Acura dropped the hybrid for 2015, relying on a pair of gasoline engines going forward. Since its introduction, Acura has sold fewer than 3,000 hybrid ILXs, a paltry number covering two full model years.

This week, Acura announced that it would show a “substantially new 2016 ILX” at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show next month. “Substantially new” is a code phrase for “mid cycle refresh,” not a generational shift — instead, its debut is keeping with the industry’s usual practice of refreshing a model in the third or fourth year, before readying an all-new model after six years.

Acura ILX Midcycle Refresh

Acura hasn’t said much about its refresh and offered only a light-restricted three-quarter view of the sedan from the rear as featured here. In a related press release Acura noted, “…the 2016 ILX will bring a sharper performance focus while delivering a greater set of high-value comfort, convenience and safety features that consumers desire in the increasingly competitive entry-luxury field.”

That “increasingly competitive” field includes new models from Audi and Mercedes-Benz as well as the next generation Buick Verano, the latter expected to arrive within the next 12 to 16 months.

Acura says that it attracts more under 35 buyers than its competitors, a good thing for a brand that wants to bring in new customers and keep them. Even so, the Acura ILX has been criticized for its bland looks, anemic performance and the fact that it is based on the Honda Civic Si. Not that the Si is a dud, its just that the Acura ILX hasn’t met even modest expectations. You might do better buying the Honda and pocketing the difference.

Engines and Transmissions

The current Acura ILX is powered by a standard 2.0-liter four cylinder engine making 150 horsepower and 140 foot-pounds of torque. Those numbers are certainly not meant to suggest performance, instead the ILX is a fuel economy leader with its 24 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway rating.

You can also choose a 2.4 liter four cylinder engine making 201 horsepower and 170 foot-pounds of torque. It gets 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Choose the base engine and you get a 5-speed automatic transmission. Go with the larger engine and you’ll work with a 6-speed manual transmission.

All-Wheel Drive Possibilities

With little product information offered by Acura, the speculation has begun. Tweaks to the body and interior are a given. More performance seems likely and an all-wheel drive option may be readied, in keeping with the direction Acura has promised as reported by Auto Trends here last week. If Acura does go with the latter, it will match what Audi, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz offer. It might also force GM to seriously explore an all-wheel drive option for the Verano.

AWD may yet show up, but it may have to wait until the next generation ILX is released. If that is the case then figure Acura would keep the refresh around for two years before debuting its next generation model. Wait any longer and both its current and new competition could move further ahead.

For Acura fans who have been patiently waiting for the brand’s next move, the ILX refresh may be just the start of greater things. Anything less and its competitors will widen the sales gap, hardly the outcome parent Honda Manufacturing wants to entertain.

No Coupe or Convertible for Chrysler

October 21, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

The last Chrysler convertible drives off into the sunset.

Chrysler convertible

Chryslers last convertible is the 2014 200.

When Cadillac killed it last convertible in the 1970s, it signaled an end to drop top production, at least among US manufacturers. Within the next decade, however, US manufacturers reentered the segment, led by the Chrysler and its LeBaron convertible. Since then, most manufacturers have offered at least one drop top model even though sales have never approached what they were in the 1960s.

Chrysler no longer offers a convertible, having ended 200 convertible production with the 2014 model year. Both Ford (Mustang) and Chevrolet (Camaro and Corvette Stingray) offer convertibles as do a handful of higher end European brands. Rumor has it that Chrysler has explored both a coupe and convertible version of its 200 series, but don’t expect it to happen and for the following reasons.

1. The cost is prohibitive. Developing a second body style for the 200 line is no longer financially tenable. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has multiple brands to manage and the Chrysler brand is not a high priority, at least not for a halo model. We know this because FCA said so — Chrysler now competes with Ford and Chevrolet, instead of Buick and Lincoln. The brand does not have the volume nor the ability to charge high prices to recoup coupe and convertible development costs.

2. The midsize market offers few coupes. When you think of midsize models, your mind likely considers the various sedans that dominate the segment: Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Chevrolet Malibu, Volkswagen Passat and others. Only the Altima and Accord offer coupe versions and the Altima coupe is also being discontinued. That leaves us only with Honda and the Accord coupe is simply not attracting all that many buyers either.

3. A compact Chrysler is on its way. Related to the first point, Chrysler’s direction has changed. Beginning in early 2016, the Chrysler 100 will debut, a compact model tasked with battling the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and the Ford Focus among other models. it will be the first small Chrysler we’ve seen, providing a logical entry point to the brand. Choose the 100 and you can move up to the midsize 200 and then to the full size 300.

4. The Chrysler Town & Country is a priority. Chrysler is also pouring its resources into developing the next generation of its Town & Country minivan. What’s important about this model is that there will be no Dodge version — Chrysler will go it alone as it battles the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey and Kia Sedona for customers in this shrinking segment. Chrysler plans to also offer a plug-in hybrid version of the Town & Country, the first manufacturer to offer a hybrid minivan.

5. Other models are planned. Chrysler’s US market share is currently the smallest of all Chrysler Group brands except for Fiat and Alfa Romeo. However, other models are planned, what will put Chrysler in more popular and profitable segments, including crossovers. Both mid- and full-sized crossovers are in the mix — with the inclusion of the 100, Chrysler’s product line will have doubled to six within the next four years.

Model Lines

That Chrysler no longer offers a coupe or a convertible is keeping in line with what consumers want. Consumer demand for crossovers continues to grow and manufacturers are responding in kind. If consumer tastes ever shift to coupes as well as to convertibles, then Chrysler and other manufacturers will follow suit. With global competition as strong as it is, taking risks by selling low-demand products is not something Chrysler or too many other manufacturers are willing to do.

Driven: 2015 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL

October 20, 2014 by admin 12 Comments

Behind the wheel of Nissan’s best seller.

2015 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL

The Nissan Altima is as American as any sedan gets. Built in Canton, Mississippi, this five-passenger, front-wheel drive midsize sedan features a chrome-wrapped grille, long overhangs and generous room inside. But it is built by a Japanese manufacturer, Nissan, a company that has its pulse on what the American car buying consumer wants.

I’ve driven multiple Altima models over the past several years and have found a common thread running through each model. That thread represents a value-oriented sedan with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) powered by a capable four-cylinder or a robust V-6 engine. My fleet samples, though, have always been equipped with the smaller four, an engine that is entirely suited for this car. Yes, you could go with the V-6, but for a model with a highway fuel economy rating of 38 mpg and no slack in power, why would you?

2015 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL

For 2015, Nissan prices the base model from $22,300. You can also choose the 2.5 S ($22,560), a 2.5 SV ($24,720) or the 2.5 SL ($28,150). Choose the V-6 and a single 3.5 SL edition is offered ($31,950). As tested, I had a 2.5 SL all to myself — it came with a moonroof package ($800), carpeted floor mats and trunk ($210) and a technology package ($1,090). With its destination charge this sedan cost $31,060, or in the pricing neighborhood of competing, well-optioned sedans.

2015 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL

Some new car shoppers stay away from the Altima because of its CVT. Sure, go ahead and knock it for it rubber-band effect — the feeling you get when you step on the accelerator and the transmission gradually stretches behind the rpm curve. It is at this point the engine whirs unmercifully, but that same engineering is what enables this model to get its excellent fuel mileage. With Nissan on track to sell 320,000 Altimas this year — far more than any other Nissan model — most shoppers probably won’t care about the CVT. Its not as if there is any midsize front-wheel drive model that provides involved driving anyway.

Most manufacturers offer a base model, what serves as the “stripped down” loss-leader edition. In the Altima the base model serves primarily as a placeholder to greater things. Indeed, for just an additional $260 you can get behind the wheel of an S edition that brings in automatic headlamps, cruise control and keyless entry. That’s on top of Bluetooth connectivity, dual chrome exhaust finishers and vehicle dynamic control offered standard across the model line.

In the Money

If you’re going to look at the Altima, especially when equipped with the four-cylinder engine, the 2.5 SV may offer the best bang for the buck. For the mid-$20,000s price range you get all the features of the S along with 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, remote engine start, a five-inch color display, NissanConnect infotainment and an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat. Technology and convenience packages will put your price closer to $28,000, still considerably below the top end of the line.

2015 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL

But that wasn’t the model I tested. The top-end Nissan Altima 2.5 SL comes with all the bells and whistles you would expect or plan to pay for. That technology package includes what mostly every driver wants today: a navigation system. Nissan adds in a larger 7-inch color display as well as three safety features: blind spot warning, lane departure warning and moving object detection. You also get SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link.

In the SL, Nissan dresses up the exterior too by providing automatic headlights, fog lights, LED tail lights, heated outside mirrors, manually folding side mirrors and chrome exhaust finishers.

Give Me Leather

Inside, the SL comes with push button start, leather seating, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, driver’s lumbar support, a 4-way power front passenger seat, a 9-speaker Bose audio system, dual zone climate control, rear air-conditioning vents and power accessories. This model also provides dual illuminated vanity mirrors, an automatic dimming rear mirror, two 12-volt outlets, four bottle holders, four cup holders, front seat back pockets and a cavernous glove box. USB and auxiliary input ports are found in a deep open compartment at the base of the center console — it is so deep that you might forget that you left your smartphone sitting there as I had.

I had no complaints about the driver’s seat except for one very small issue: a slightly lower seating position would have been great. Even so, with the tilt and telescoping steering wheel column I was able to find just the right adjustment — you probably will too.

2015 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL

The Altima’s instrument panel features a pair of analogy displays — tachometer on the left, speedometer on the right — and a larger digital driver information center in the middle. Easy to use cruise and secondary controls sit right on the steering wheel. Traditional switches and knobs are on the center console. A deep storage compartment with an attached tray divides the front seats. A coin holder and heated seat controls are just fore of that compartment.

The rear 60-40 split seat comfortably seats three people. You can also let down the larger portion of the seat to gain access to the trunk. There is a switch behind the seat — between two of the three car seat anchor points — that gets the job done. The switch wasn’t where I expected it to be — they’re usually attached to the seat itself — but it works. The smaller section of the seat, however, does not fold down. As expected, you can pull down the center seat arm rest to gain access to the two rear cup holders.

On the Road

I touched on the Altima’s on-road characteristics earlier. Illuminating that point, the Altima does a good job in the torque steer compartment, using active understeer control to minimize the effect. Otherwise, steering is numb, cornering is good and braking gets the job done by bringing this sedan to a firm, clean stop.

2015 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL

The Altima has a boatload of competition in the segment and I’ve tested nearly every model. You have the Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Chrysler 200, Subaru Legacy, Mazda 6, Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry. The last two outsell the Altima, but Nissan is ahead of the rest. Don’t expect to find a well-optioned sedan for $25,000 in this segment, unless you consider Hyundai and, yes, the Chrysler. Still, most sedans will run from the upper $20,000s to low $30,000s, a price point that is consistent with the average cost of today’s new vehicles.
