After the Crash: Replace the Car Seat?

September 28, 2018 by admin 1 Comment

Timely tips for Child Passenger Safety Week

You never saw it coming. A driver cuts into your lane, clips your right front fender, spins your SUV and forces it into a guardrail.

The airbags deploy, you’re momentarily stunned and then suddenly you’re jarred into full alert mode as your toddler lets out an ear-piercing wail. Fortunately, your daughter isn’t hurt — she’s just confused and frightened. Her car seat protected her from injury and for that you’re immensely grateful.

Although your car can be fixed, did you know that your child’s car seat or booster seat should be replaced following a moderate to a severe accident? It may look okay, but that doesn’t mean it is fit for duty. Indeed, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises that car seats or booster seats involved in certain types of accidents should be discarded.

Child Passenger Safety Week

Recently, experts from CARSTAR — North America’s largest network of collision repair specialists — teamed with Evenflo, an innovator in child safety equipment, including car and booster seats, to shine a light on this little-known fact.

car seatWorking with Shannon Spake, a Fox Sports host who covers football, basketball and motorsports, the companies drew attention to car seat safety as part of Child Passenger Safety Week this week. Spake is the mother of twin boys and like other parents is well versed in car seat safety.

Said Spake, “When your car is involved in a crash, it’s just as important that you take care of your car seat or booster seat as it is to address the car damage. CARSTAR and Evenflo want to make sure parents everywhere are aware of the potential need to replace their car seat or booster seat after a crash.”

Minor Car Crash Defined

So, what defines a minor crash, one that DOES NOT require the replacement of a car seat or a booster seat? The NHTSA is very particular about what this means, identifying five points that must apply across the line:

  1. The vehicle was able to be driven away from the crash site.
  2. The vehicle door nearest the car seat was not damaged.
  3. None of the passengers in the vehicle sustained any injuries in the crash.
  4. If the vehicle has airbags, the airbags did not deploy during the crash; and
  5. There is no visible damage to the car seat.

On the flip side, the NHTSA says to NEVER use a car seat that has been involved in a moderate to severe crash. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

“CARSTAR is committed to repairing accident damage and getting families back on the road in a safe vehicle, and the child safety seat is a major part of that vehicle’s safety system,” said Dean Fisher, Chief Operating Officer for CARSTAR. “Any time you’re replacing sheet metal, bumpers, airbags and other safety systems, you’ve been in an accident hard enough to damage the car seat. It’s a cost that many insurance policies cover, so it’s always smart to replace the car seat and ensure your child is safe and protected on the road.”

Turn to Your Car Seat Manufacturer for Guidance

What should consumers do? Evenflo recommends that consumers contact their car seat manufacturer if they have questions about car seat replacement after a crash.

“Crash damage to a car seat or booster seat may not always be visible,” said Evenflo Safety Advocate Sarah Haverstick. “Damage can occur even if the child restraint is unoccupied during the crash. If a consumer has a question about whether their car seat should be replaced, it is important to contact their car seat manufacturer directly for guidance.”

Essential Child Protection Safety Tips

Beyond the likely replacement of a car seat following a moderate to severe accident, Evenflo offers three helpful reminders regarding child passenger safety:

  1. Make sure your child’s age, weight and height are within the requirements for any car seat you are considering for purchase.
  2. Check the NHTSA guidance to help determine what type of car seat is appropriate for a child’s size and development level.
  3. For help with car seat installation and use, contact your car seat manufacturer or find a certified child passenger safety technician near you.

Keep Your Child Safe

Car seat safety is no small matter. There are child passenger safety (CPS) technicians in your area who can help ensure your car seats are installed correctly and teach you how to install a car seat on your own.

Volkswagen Rabbit Reprise: Again!

September 24, 2018 by admin 2 Comments

VW’s bunny makes its third visit. This time as a limited-edition Rabbit trim.

2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI Rabbit Edition.
2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI Rabbit Edition.

The Volkswagen Rabbit is set to return once again. This time, it isn’t a model name. Instead, VW has chosen to deliver a limited-run Golf GTI Rabbit edition, apparently for the 2019 model year only.

2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI Overview

With the Rabbit edition on tap, Volkswagen has reiterated its commitment to small cars. The GTI returns with its S, SE, and Autobahn trims in place. For 2019, the Rabbit edition slots between the S and SE.

New this year is a slight boost in power to the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine motivating this front-wheel-drive model. The turbo now makes 228 horsepower when fueled with premium grade gasoline, up from the previous 220 horsepower. It still makes 258 pound-feet of torque.

Volkswagen gives Golf shoppers a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The latter is a nod to enthusiasts who might put an emphasis on 0-60 mph times. Although VW hasn’t published those numbers, a dual-clutch transmission typically shaves 0.1 or 0.2 seconds off of the manual’s time. When it comes to sprints, these numbers are critically important.

Golf GTI Rabbit Edition

As for the Golf GTI Rabbit, it has LED headlights with an adaptive front-lighting system — the better to see around corners. You’ll also find 18-inch gloss black aluminum alloy wheels, a black rear spoiler, keyless entry with push-button start, Rabbit badging and red-stitched floor mats.

Among safety features, you’ll find front assist, blind spot monitoring and rear traffic alert. You’ll also have your choice of eye-popping colors, including Cornflower Blue and Deep Black Pearl.

Price Your 2019 VW Golf GTI

Volkswagen prices the 2019 Golf GTI from $27,595, plus an $895 destination fee. Add $1,100 for the automatic transmission.

The Rabbit Edition begins at $28,895, while the SE costs $31,795. Topping things off is the Autobahn model, costing $35,995, which brings in summer tires, dynamic chassis control (adaptive suspension), a 12-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, and every available driver-assist features.

Resurrecting the Rabbit

As for the Rabbit name, it was first used in 1975 for the vehicle that eventually replaced the Beetle. Oddly, the Golf name was used from the onset in Europe, but not in the U.S.

In 1985, the North American Rabbit became the Golf, a name it stayed with for more than two decades. However, from 2006 to 2009, Volkswagen sought to increase U.S. sales by resurrecting the Rabbit name. That effort didn’t go over too well. Finally, in 2010 this model returned to its Golf roots where it is likely to stay for good.

That said, the GTI Rabbit edition may very well stir interest in the Golf as customers are drawn to its special look and features. As for competitors, consider the Subaru WRX and the Honda Civic Si when examining this model. By the way, the Ford Focus ST is no more, while the Hyundai Veloster Turbo is also worth exploring.

At a Glance: 2019 Kia K900

September 21, 2018 by admin 6 Comments

The Kia K900 is one of the most improbable and unlikely models from a mainstream manufacturer.

2019 Kia K900
Sophisticated and elegant, the 2019 Kia K900 seeks its own place in a niche segment.

Introduced in 2015, the K900 immediately gave Kia an entry in the niche full-size luxury sedan segment. That segment is occupied by the likes of the BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Jaguar XJ and the Audi A8L.

Sales of the K900 never accounted for much, so after three years it appeared Kia would pull this model from the U.S. market. Instead, the automaker skipped the 2018 model year and has an all-new sedan ready for 2019.

Yes, despite NBA superstar LeBron James serving as the K900 spokesman, Kia has only managed several hundred models sold each year. We’re not sure what Kia expects the 2019 K900 to do, but it is safe to say it will once again serve as the brand’s flagship model with distinction.

Here are details of the next-generation K900:

1. The K900’s overall dimensions are larger.

Forget downsizing! The 2019 Kia K900 is upsized slightly over the previous model. It is longer, wider and taller than the 2015-2017 version.

From wheel to wheel, this sedan measures 122.2 inches, up from 119.9 inches. From bumper to bumper, the increase is smaller. At 201.6 inches, the new model is one inch longer. Its width increased slightly to 75.4 inches from 74.8 inches. From a height perspective, the change is even smaller, increasing by just 0.2 inches to 58.7 inches.

The interior space appears to be roughly the same. We’re not sure what the trunk dimensions are for the new model, but we’re thinking they’ll come in better than the modest 15.9 cubic feet of the previous K900.

2019 Kia K900
Bentley-like design elements grace the Kia K900.

2. One engine is better than two.

The previous K900 came with two engine choices: a 3.8-liter V6 and a 5.0-liter V8. Both engines are gone, replaced by a single twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque.

Importantly, the new engine effectively splits the horsepower differences between the two previous engines, while matching the torque of the V8. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. Yes, all-wheel drive is now standard.

3. State-of-the-art technologies live here.

Kia Motors has long pushed its technology prowess through its UVO telematics system. The new Kia K900 demonstrates just how savvy this automaker is.

For starters, you’ll find a 12.3-inch Human Machine Interface (HMI) touch-screen. This system displays maps, trip details, audio information, manages climate control and oversees other details. Also, the K900 has a new navigation system. All these things tie in with a dedicated service representative reachable via a VIP phone line.

Other tech features include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, an available 9.7-inch head-up display, and a 17-speaker Harmon Kardon surround sound system.

2019 Kia K900
Fine leathers and choice woods dress the K900’s interior.

Among the safety features you’ll find Kia’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which includes a surround view monitor that has four cameras that provide a 360-degree perspective. The Blind Spot View Monitor (BVM) supplies the driver with a live feed of the adjacent lanes in the instrument panel. The system kicks in with a flick of a turn signal.

Other advanced safety features include lane keep assist, forward collision avoidance assist, and driver attention warning. You’ll also find rear cross traffic avoidance alert, safe exit assist, lane follow assist and advanced smart cruise control. The latter system utilizes lane markings and radar-front vehicle information to keep the K900 centered and sufficiently behind the vehicle immediately in front.

4. Luxury beyond reproach.

The Kia K900 offers a high-level of luxury befitting a sedan of its class. Soft leathers cover the seats and wrap the interior. Wood trim choices include walnut, olive ash, beige olive ash and engineered wood.

Kia says the front seats are well contoured and designed to supply optimum support and comfort in an effort to reduce fatigue. In a nod to Korea’s history, the quilted leather at the shoulders point to the clothing worn by Korean kings of antiquity.

Key features include heated and ventilated seats up front. An available 20-way power driver’s seat comes with width-adjusting bolsters and lumbar support. The front passenger has a 12-way power seat. The rear seats have their own advantages as the one on the driver’s side offers 12-way adjustment and the one on the right side 14-way adjustment. Both seats have reclining capabilities. Heating and ventilation options are also available for the outboard rear seats.

2019 Kia K900
The rear compartment seats three, but is ideal for two passengers.

5. Pricing to be determined.

We’ll update this page when pricing information becomes known. The previous model started at $49,900, plus a $950 destination fee. That model offered three trims: Premium V6, Luxury V6 and Luxury V8.

We think the new model will cost at least $55,000 based on the improvements in performance and content alone. That’s still $20,000 less than a Lexus LS which, by the way, is also now powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine.

Kia K900: Round Two

As unlikely that there was a K900 in the first place, introducing an all-new model is a bold move on Kia’s part. Likely, sales will remain slow, although the sedan could find its way into livery fleets. After all, the Lincoln Town Car is long retired and not every limousine is a full-size SUV.

If Kia sends us a 2019 K900, we’ll supply a review and update this page with a link.

About the 2019 Cadillac XT4

September 20, 2018 by admin 2 Comments

The XT4 is the latest crossover for the Cadillac brand.

2019 Cadillac XT4
The 2019 Cadillac XT4 is an entry-level crossover for GM’s luxury brand.

The 2019 Cadillac XT4 is a subcompact luxury crossover, the latest model for GM’s luxury marque. It has a bold style and delivers a quiet ride. However, its part-time all-wheel-drive system isn’t as user-friendly as some competing models.

Cadillac’s XT4 operates in a segment occupied by the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA. It is larger than the German trio, an edge Cadillac hopes to exploit as it markets its latest SUV. The XT4 slots beneath the compact XT5. The Cadillac Escalade remains the largest utility vehicle offered by the brand. You might also consider the Volvo XC40.

Shopping for a 2019 Cadillac XT4

The 2019 Cadillac XT4 offers room for five. Besides its spacious passenger space, the XT4 has 22.5 cubic feet of standard storage space. Fold down the rear seat and that space expands to 48.9 cubic feet.

Powering all models is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This engine works with a nine-speed automatic transmission. When equipped with the available towing package, this crossover can pull up to 3,500 pounds.

This model has standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. Unlike some competing systems that automatically engage the rear wheels as they slip, the Cadillac system must be activated by pushing the appropriate button.

2019 Cadillac XT4

Three Available Trims

When considering Cadillac’s smallest crossover, you have three trims to explore. The base Luxury trim is followed by Premium Luxury and Sport models, which are given equal weight.

Package options for the base model include the Trailering Package ($300) and a Battery Protection Package ($130). A Cold Weather Package ($850, automatic heated steering wheel, heated driver and front passenger seats and heated rear outboard seats) round out the choices.

Both the Premium Luxury and Sport trims offer eight packages, including the three on the base model. Customers have a choice of Comfort and Convenience ($1,050 Premium Luxury; $2,400 Sport), Enhanced Visibility ($1,500), Technology ($1,650 Premium Luxury; $1,400 Sport), Driver Assist ($1,100) and Driver Awareness ($770) packages.

Choose all-wheel drive and you’ll add $2,500 to your starting cost.

2019 Cadillac XT4

2019 Cadillac XT4 Luxury

The 2019 Cadillac XT4 Luxury is priced from $35,790, including a $995 destination charge. Standard features include LED headlamps and tail lamps, heated and power-controlled side mirrors,18-inch alloy wheels, and a manual liftgate.

Inside, the XT4 has imitation leather seats, a power driver’s seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, dual-zone automatic climate control, and four cargo tie-downs. Tech equipment includes an 8-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth connectivity, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, and a 7-speaker audio system. Cadillac also includes HD Radio, satellite radio, two USB ports, a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot and OnStar services.

Safety features include an HD rear vision camera, Teen Driver monitoring and park assist. If you want advanced driver-assist features, you’ll need to explore the other two trims.

2019 Cadillac XT4 Premium Luxury

Priced from $40,290, the Premium Luxury represents the middle model in the XT4’s product range. This one builds on the base model by adding roof rails, a power liftgate, interior ambient lighting and leather seating surfaces. You’ll also find front and rear park assist, lane change alert with side blind zone alert and rear cross traffic alert.

Choose the Comfort and Convenience Package to gain such amenities as driver and front passenger ventilated seats, driver and front passenger seat massage control, an 8-way power front passenger seat adjuster (upgrade from 6-way), 4-way power driver and passenger lumbar control, and a hands-free liftgate.

The available Technology Package adds such items as an 8-inch reconfigurable gauge cluster, a head-up display, a power rake and telescoping steering column, wireless charging and front cornering lamps and LED front turn signals.

2019 Cadillac XT4

2019 Cadillac XT4 Sport

Sharing the same $40,290 price as the Premium Luxury is the XT4 Sport. Where the Premium Luxury opts for a luxurious take, the Sport puts its emphasis on sportiness. No surprise there.

The most significant differences in this model include its sport mesh grille, gloss black exterior trim, sport tail lamps, carbon fiber or wood interior trim, power-adjustable seat bolsters and a sport steering wheel.

Shoppers wanting driver-assist features will look at the Driver Awareness Package. This package includes low-speed forward automatic braking, front pedestrian braking, forward collision alert, following distance indicator, lane keep assist with lane departure warning and automatic high beams.

There is also a Driver Assist Package, which adds forward and reverse automatic braking and advanced adaptive cruise control.

2019 Cadillac XT4

Buyer’s Choice

From Cadillac’s perspective, the XT4 is just the tonic this luxury brand needed. Its low price point, roomy interior and peppy engine work to its advantage.

That said, we think either the Premium Luxury or Sport trim will appeal to most shoppers as these offer the equipment and package upgrades shoppers want. Yes, you have to pay extra for some items that are standard equipment in models such as the Lexus NX.

Overall, we think the XT4 offers a strong entry in the segment, although as of this writing we haven’t driven one. We expect that will change, therefore we’ll update this page accordingly. In any case, Cadillac offers incentives to current and conquest owners, which can lower your costs as you shop for the segment’s newest model.

Chrysler: Out With the 300,
In With the Portal?

September 18, 2018 by admin 4 Comments

An end of an era as the Chrysler 300 finishes its final model year.

2015 Chrysler 300
The Chrysler 300 will soon be no more.

Sixteen years is a long time to build a model, especially one that has seen few changes since its debut. The Chrysler 300 is that model, a traditional full-size sedan and one of only two vehicles sold by the brand.

This week, we learned that the Chrysler 300 will soon be no more. Parent Fiat Chrysler has decided to retire the vehicle, although the similar Dodge Charger sedan and the Dodge Challenger coupe will likely live on. That said, the Dodges may eventually go away as well as FCA transitions chiefly to a maker of crossovers, SUVs, pickup trucks and vans.

Daimler Derived: Chrysler 300

The Chrysler 300 arrived on the market at the same time as the Dodge Magnum wagon and one year before the Charger’s debut. All four models (including the Challenger) share a common architecture developed by Mercedes-Benz. At that time, the brands were part of DaimlerChrysler, the ill-fated union of German and American automakers.

As for the 300, it was originally presented as a premium model, one designed to take on Buick and provide an affordable alternative to similar-sized models from Audi, BMW and Lexus. Its “gangster” good looks drove its appeal, with an extended wheelbase and multiple all-wheel-drive versions available. Later, the stretched wheelbase model was discontinued and all-wheel drive was restricted to the V6 models alone.

The 300 was also supposed to top a three-car model line. Indeed, that line already includes the 200, a midsize sedan and was supposed to be completed by the 100, a compact model. But plans for the 100 were canceled and production of the 200 was ended early as FCA later announced its full commitment to brands such as Ram and Jeep, with little left for Chrysler and Dodge.

2015 Dodge Charger
The Dodge Charger may live on. For now.

Enter the Chrysler Portal

But the Chrysler brand isn’t likely to go away. Instead, as the 300 drives off into the distance, an electric van based on the Portal concept seems likely to arrive in 2020.

The Chrysler Portal Concept is an electric van “designed by millennials for millennials,” according to the company’s website. The concept was introduced in January 2017 at CES (Consumer Electronic Show) and just ahead of the North American International Auto Show (Detroit auto show).

When it comes to futuristic designs, the Portal Concept nails it. This van’s overall design features a boxy look tempered by dramatic curves and unique roof, door and hatchback elements. Indeed, this model has four sliding doors, which aid in access to the interior. Inside, the cabin is airy and expansive with four individual sculptured seats. The long and deeply canted windshield, glass roof and generous storage space are important design distinctions of note.

Chrysler Portal Concept
The Chrysler Portal Concept appears headed to production.

Electric, But Not Yet Autonomous?

Besides its catchy design and electric powertrain, the Chrysler Portal is supposed to be fully autonomous. That said, we’re not certain autonomous drive will be ready when this model debuts. Further, while it may offer full electrification, Chrysler hasn’t ruled out a range extender option, such as what’s offered with the BMW i3.

Please note that our comments here are largely speculative. The automaker hasn’t made an official announcement of the new model or of what it will entail.

As for the concept, Chrysler says that the Portal has a 250-mile electric range on a full charge. Further, the automaker says that by connecting to a DC Fast Charge outlet, the battery pack recharges to a 150-mile range in under 20 minutes. Other concept features include facial recognition technology, track-mounted seating that can fold flat, slide the full length of the vehicle or be removed.

Chrysler’s Van Approach

Although Chrysler hasn’t called the Portal a minivan, it is in every sense of the word just that. Moreover, it is much more of a true minivan than the current models available, including the Chrysler Pacifica, Toyota Sienna and the Honda Odyssey. All three are essentially medium vans that match the size of today’s full-size crossovers.

Finally, with the 300 gone, we’re entering a new era of automotive manufacturing where vehicles favoring electrification and autonomy gain ascendancy. That said, the consumer is the final arbiter of what the market offers, therefore it will be interesting to gauge how they respond to changes that are reshaping the landscape.

Ram Gets a Midsize Pickup Truck

September 17, 2018 by admin 4 Comments

A Dakota replacement is in the works.

Dodge Dakota
The Dodge Ram was the first midsize pickup truck.

Once considered a dying segment, the midsize pickup truck market is showing fresh signs of life. Much credit is due to GM for releasing a pair of new trucks in 2015 — the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. Those trucks lifted sales among such competing models as the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier, and rejuvenated the segment.

Honda Ridgeline, Ford Ranger Return

Early in 2019, the Ford Ranger returns after an 8-year hiatus. About the same time, the Jeep Scrambler joins the market, the first pickup truck from this SUV brand we’ve seen in decades. Honda has the Ridgeline, a crossover pickup truck based on the architecture underpinning the Honda Pilot.

The segment isn’t done yet. A new model from Nissan seems imminent and the Tacoma will likely see a significant overhaul in the next year or two as Toyota seeks to defend its top position in the segment. Next up is a Ram pickup truck, an expected all-new model recently confirmed for production as reported by Automotive News.

2019 Ford Ranger
The Ford Ranger returns in early 2019.

From Dodge To Ram

Not much is known about the Ram, which replaces the Dodge Dakota last produced in 2010 (it was sold as the Ram Dakota in 2011). What we do know is that the Ram will be built at the same Toledo, Ohio, manufacturing plant as the Jeep Scrambler. Both models are traditional body-on-frame and will likely have multiple powertrain, cabin and bed choices available.

But the Ram, like the Jeep, will not be a high volume model. The segment has supported about 500,000 units annually, which is a far cry from the 2.4 million full-size pickup trucks sold every year in the U.S. alone.

Manufacturers, however, may look at midsize pickup trucks as the key to improving overall fuel economy. Yes, full-size pickup trucks from GM, Ford and Ram earn up to 30 mpg highway when motivated by a turbo-diesel engine. But those engines represent only a small portion of the motors powering pickup trucks.

2019 Ram 1500.
2019 Ram 1500 Rebel (l) and Limited editions (r).

Hybrid Pickup Trucks

Ram is the first manufacturer to introduce hybrids, utilizing mild hybrids in some models. They’re not full-blown hybrids, but they do bring vehicle electrification along with the enhanced power to the segment. We’ll soon see plug-in hybrid pickup trucks, which will only enhance fuel efficiency.

The smaller, lighter midsize trucks may prove the most efficient models as these come with standard four-cylinder engines. Just as Ram has the first hybrid trucks, we’ll see that technology spread to Jeep and to the Dakota replacement, as both brands are owned by Fiat Chrysler.

The Jeep Wrangler, for instance, will soon boast a plug-in hybrid model, arriving on the market about a year after an available turbo-diesel engine debuts next year. It seems likely that whatever the Wrangler gets will head to the Scrambler. And because the Scrambler and midsize Ram share the same architecture, ditto for the Dakota replacement.

2017 GMC Canyon Denali
2017 GMC Canyon Denali Crew Cab 4×4 short bed.

Ram Pickup Truck Aspirations

Although there isn’t much known about the new Ram pickup, there are a few things we can deduce. For starters, extended cab and crew cab configurations along with two bed size choices are a given.

FCA’s venerable 3.6-liter V6 and a turbo-charged 2,0-liter four-cylinder engine should kick things off. One or both will be paired with a six-speed manual transmission or to an available 9-speed automatic transmission (standard with four-wheel drive). Segment-leading technologies, including infotainment and driver-assist features, will dominate the top-end trims.

In all, the upcoming Ram should only burnish the brand. Given that, the Ram is only possible because of the Jeep Scrambler, which is based on the popular Wrangler. Together, the three models should deliver the profits the automaker requires to justify such models.

A Whole Lot of Awesome:
Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison

September 7, 2018 by admin 12 Comments

A tricked-out truck for the midsize range.

2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison
This ZR2 Bison has the attitude and off-road cred to go with it.

Chevrolet just raised the bar in the midsize performance pickup truck category by introducing its latest model, the Colorado ZR2 Bison. The Bison builds on the off-road-ready ZR2 thanks to a collaboration Chevrolet has with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), a premium off-road aftermarket manufacturer.

The new model goes on sale in January 2019. Here’s what you need to know about this tricked-out Chevy.

1. Five Underbody Skid Plates

2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 BisonIf you’re a serious off-roader, then you know your pickup truck needs protection. Jagged terrain can puncture a gas tank or destroy expensive moving parts.

The ZR2 Bison gets five underbody skid plates, which is more than the usual three or four typically offered.

The skid plates cover the fuel tank, the engine oil pan, the transfer case and both the front and rear locking differentials. AEV designed the plates, which are made of hard, durable hot-stamped Boron steel. The steel not only protects, but it adds minimal weight.

2. Additional Reinforcing Steel

The ZR2 Bison benefits from reinforcing stamped steel for the front and rear bumpers. The idea here is to provide an additional measure of protection for drivers as they climb obstacles.

3. Lettering and Decal Changes

You’d expect Chevrolet to make the ZR2 Bison stand out in other ways, right? Well, you won’t be disappointed.

It begins with the unique flow-through “CHEVROLET” lettered grille, which replaces the expected bow-tie insignia. It is a look competing manufacturers have successfully employed (Ford and Toyota, for instance) and something customers seem to appreciate.

Other decorative changes include special “Bison” decals on the bed sides along with an “AEV Bison” logo on the tailgate. Inside, AEV logo floor liners and front head restraints complete the look.

Building on the Best

Go with the Bison and you’re building on the many attributes of the ZR2, including the unique front and rear locking differentials, which no competing model offers. Special Multimatic DSSV dampers are also unique to the segment.

The ZR2 models come with off-road rocker protection, cast-iron control arms and an Autotrac transfer case. Both models have a modified 3.42 ratio rear axle along with front and rear tracks widened by 3.5 inches and a suspension lifted by 2 inches over a Colorado Z71. These models ride on 31-inch tires.

Chevrolet will offer the ZR2 Bison in both extended- and crew-cab configurations. The truck is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine or customers may upgrade to the 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine. Available equipment includes an accessory snorkel, which enhances air filtration on dusty trails.

ZR2 Bison: Looking Ahead

Chevrolet hasn’t shared pricing information yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the ZR2 Bison ends up costing at least $45,000. Choose the diesel engine and your final cost might push $50,000. That’s likely in the same territory that a future Ford Ranger Raptor model would cost, based on Ford’s midsize truck, which is also debuting this January.

On the Road With a 2018 Genesis G80

September 6, 2018 by admin 8 Comments

Luxury meets value with the Genesis G80

2018 Genesis G80
The Genesis G80 is available in three trims. It has three engine choices and an automatic transmission.

Hyundai launched the Genesis luxury brand launched in 2016 with plans to steadily expand it to six models. Carved out of Hyundai, this marque is comprised of G70 (compact), G80 (midsize) and G90 (full-size) sedans. Two SUVs will soon follow; a third model of a not-yet-determined body style should arrive in 2021.

Genesis competes with a host of luxury brands, including Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. Its traditional rear-wheel-drive architecture gives it the right to take on the best models in the business.

Recently, a Genesis G80 sedan was delivered for my inspection. It is a model I’m very familiar with, both under the Genesis moniker and when it was marketed as the Hyundai Genesis. I’ve always liked this sedan, which is stylish, generously appointed and attainable.

2018 Genesis G80

2018 Genesis G80 Overview

The 2018 Genesis G80 seats five and comes with standard rear-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. This model has three engine choices — each one is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Pay a visit to the Genesis G80 splash page and you’ll find 10 trim choices for your consideration. In reality, there are three trims, with each one corresponding to the engine choice. Thus, the standard prices are as follows: 3.8 ($41,750); 3.3T or Sport ($55,250); and 5.0 ($57,000). Add $975 for the destination charge and another $2,500 for all-wheel drive.

The 3.8 is where the package options kick in. The Premium Package ($5,000) builds on the standard features, adding LED foglights, a power tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof, a Lexicon 14-speaker surround sound audio, a 7-inch color LCD multi-information display, wireless device charging (front) Qi standard, front and rear parking sensors, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a power rear sunshade, and manual rear side window shades.

You can also upgrade to the Ultimate Package ($10,100), which builds on the standard trim and Premium Package. Here, you’ll find shift-by-wire, full LED headlights with dynamic bending light (DBL) technology, premium leather seating surfaces, a power driver seat cushion extender and side bolster, genuine matte-finish wood trim and aluminum trim, a heads-up display, a multi-view camera system, a 9.2” HD touchscreen, Lexicon 17-speaker surround sound audio, a power trunk lid, and a dual mode front vent control and CO2 Sensor.

Your Choice of Engines

Credit Genesis with giving the G80 three engine choices and very good ones at that.

2018 Genesis G80The standard engine displaces 3.8 liters, generating 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. It is also the most efficient one too, making 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. This one runs on regular gasoline.

A twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque is the second engine choice. Models equipped with this engine make 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway and take premium gasoline.

The third engine choice is the lone V8, which displaces 5.0 liters and has an output of 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The EPA-estimated fuel economy comes in at 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. You’ll fuel with premium gasoline too.

Equipped the Way You Want

Genesis is big on value and that’s evident by just how well this model is equipped. We’ll look at the three main trims and what you get with each one.

Genesis G80 3.8

The G80’s roster of standard equipment is strong, beginning with the exterior.

2018 Genesis G80This model comes with Bi-Xenon HID headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRL), high beam assist, power-folding and heated dual side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, 18-inch alloy wheels and a hands-free open trunk.

Inside, the G80 has push-button start to go with keyless entry. This model also comes with a leather-wrapped and power-controlled tilt-and-telescopic steering column, leather seats, 12-way power front seats with dual automatic climate control, and an automatic-dimming rearview mirror. A drive mode select allows you to choose between normal, eco and sport modes.

Among tech features, the 2018 G80 includes a 7-speaker audio system with satellite radio and a CD player.

2018 Genesis G80Genesis also includes an 8-inch color touch-screen with navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, Bluetooth and two USB ports. Genesis also provides three years complimentary connected car services and three years SiriusXM Travel Link services.

Among safety tech you’ll find a rearview camera with parking guidelines, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and driver attention alert. Genesis also includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

Genesis G80 Sport (3.3T)

2018 Genesis G80Besides the twin-turbo V6 engine, the Genesis G80 Sport adds such features as a panoramic power glass tilt and slide sunroof and a vehicle anti-theft system with engine mobilizer.

Inside, this trim has a power rear sunshade. All other tech and safety features remain the same.

Genesis G80 5.0

The V8 engine is the most significant difference at this trim level. The other one is the addition of front fog lights.

On the Road

My test Genesis G80 3.8 with rear-wheel drive came with zero options. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t well equipped as noted above. It just means you can find a midsize luxury sedan in the low-$40,000 range and that alone is good news.

What you have with the standard model is a quiet, comfortable riding sedan. Step-off acceleration is adequate and passing power is satisfactory. The transmission is properly matched with this engine, shifting through cogs quickly with no hunting detected.

The steering is light to the touch with limited feedback. On twisty roads and when pulling out of corners, its lack of handling precision becomes evident. Not in a disturbing way, but as a matter of fact. And that fact is a sedan like the BMW 5 Series is still difficult to beat.

Hours of backcountry road traveling gave me a good feel for what the Genesis G80 is all about. It is not a corner carver, but it acquits itself everywhere else and that’s what customers expect in this segment. In the G80, Genesis found what most customers want and delivers it.

2018 Genesis G80

Parting Thoughts: Genesis G80

The 2018 Genesis G80 delivers solid value for the segment. A number of competing models start around $50,000 and usually offer a turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the base engine. The Audi A6, Cadillac CTS and Lexus GS are three such models that come to mind.

Notably, when comparing this model to the Lexus, there is a near $5,000 price difference between Genesis and Lexus and even then you’re comparing a V6 engine to a small turbo four. Choose the GS 350 F Sport and you’ll pay $52,260 or just over $10,000 more than the G80 for a V6 that also makes 311 horsepower. Sure, the Lexus has better handling, but in all other areas, these two sedans are nearly equal.

As for the model of your choosing, adding the Ultimate Package gives you a well-equipped sedan, one that is priced like the Lexus, but with more features. Here, you get the most bang for the buck, although if enhanced performance is important to you, then you’ll look at the two other engine choices instead.

About the 2019 Chevrolet Volt

September 5, 2018 by admin 5 Comments

Chevrolet’s Volt maintains its place in a niche segment.

2019 Chevrolet Volt
Chevrolet’s Volt PHEV is available in two trims.

The 2019 Chevrolet Volt operates in a limited, but important segment. As a compact plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, the Volt supplies sufficient electrification range for local drivers, then backs it up with a small generator (engine) for longer trips.

The original model rolled out in 2011; the second-generation Volt followed five years later. Today, the Chevy Volt supplies ample tech and safety features. You’ll want to carefully examine rear seating space and storage as these areas may be smaller than your needs.

Updates for 2019

Among the changes for 2019 include an updated infotainment system and a high-definition rearview camera. Chevrolet also supplies an optional onboard charger for faster charges. For the first time, a power driver’s seat is available.

Shopping for a 2019 Chevrolet Volt

The 2019 Chevrolet Volt is a compact front-wheel-drive hatchback with room for five. It is derived from the same architecture as the Chevy Cruze. Its cargo opening is small and even then you have just 10.6 cubic feet of storage space to work with. On the other hand, the Cruze sedan has 14.8 cubic feet (22.7 cubic feet with the hatchback).

Chevrolet supplies the Volt with a unique powertrain, which it sometimes references as Voltec. This electric-drive system is composed of an 18.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, two electric motors, a 1.5-liter four-cylinder generator and a single-speed transmission. Under hard acceleration, this system puts down a robust 294 pound-feet of torque.

2019 Chevrolet VoltImportantly, the 2019 Volt has an electric-only range of 53 miles and an overall range of 420 miles. Regular gasoline is stored in an 8.9-gallon fuel tank and is tapped as needed or whenever the electric power runs out. It takes about 13 hours to charge the battery pack with a household outlet. When utilizing the 3.6 kW charger, it takes 4.5 hours. Some models have a 7.2 kW charger, which reduces charge time to just 2.3 hours.

Two Trims to Consider

Chevy offers the 2019 Volt in LT and Premier trims. Its nearest competitor is the Toyota Prius Prime. Other vehicles to consider include the Honda Clarity Plug-In and the Ford Fusion Energi PHEV.

Early on, some experts compared the Volt to the Nissan Leaf. This was unfortunate and confusing as the Leaf is a pure-electric vehicle, while the Volt is a hybrid. If you’re looking for an electric car, the Chevrolet Bolt EV might also be considered.

As for the prices featured here, they are for the 2018 model. As soon as we have 2019 information, we’ll update this page. All prices include an $875 destination charge.

2019 Chevrolet Volt LT

The Volt LT is priced from $34,095. Standard exterior features include LED headlamps and tail lamps, a front recovery hook, power side mirrors, and 17-inch aluminum wheels set within low-rolling-resistance tires.

Inside, the Chevy Volt LT has full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, cloth seats and single-zone climate control. Among the tech features are a six-speaker audio system, an 8-inch color display, Bluetooth, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, two USB ports, an auxiliary input jack, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

Among the top safety features are 10 standard airbags, OnStar connected services, a rearview camera and Teen Driver monitoring technology.

Among the packages available are a Comfort Package ($460 with heated side mirrors, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. A Mat Package costs $260, while an Interior Protection Package costs $200. An LT Driver Confidence Package ($790, with rear park assist, rear cross-traffic alert and side blind zone alert with lane change alert). Finally, a Blackout Package ($1,995, with 17-inch gloss black wheel, front and rear black bow tie emblems and a sport medal kit) rounds things out for this trim.

2019 Chevrolet Volt

2019 Chevrolet Volt Premier

Priced from $38,445, the Volt Premier builds on the base model. All the features of the Comfort Package are included here.

You’ll also find leather-covered seats, heated rear outboard seats, wireless charging, an 8-speaker Bose audio system, wireless charging for devices, and automatic park assist.

A Driver Confidence II Package ($990) is available and includes everything in the standard package. These items include rear cross-traffic alert, low speed forward automatic braking, IntelliBeam headlamps, lane keep assist, forward collision alert, following distance indicator, and lane change alert with side blind zone alert.

The three other packages available with the LT can be had with this trim too.

2019 Chevy Volt

Buyer’s Choice

Chevrolet Volt provides a happy medium between full electrification and gas- or diesel-powered driving. For some, it has a sufficient commuting range that allows the driver to head to work, recharge in the morning, then disconnect for the remainder of the day.

The gas tank is the insurance that removes range anxiety. You may find that having the gas backup a confidence-building feature and it is. Some drivers report going months between fill-ups, although we recommend burning off the old fuel from time to time to keep it fresh.

As for your choice of trims, we suggest starting your search with the LT with the Driver Confidence Package. If advanced amenities and safety features are preferred, then the top trim with the Driver Confidence II Package is a must.

Spotlight: 24th Annual Rod & Custom Show Presented by the Stray Cats

Stray Cats and a classic car show.

24th Annual Rod & Custom Show Presented by the Stray Cats
At 10 a.m, the 24th Annual Rod & Custom Show Presented by the Stray Cats
officially began with the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Labor Day weekend is the unofficial end of summer for some parts of the country, but here in the Southeast, it means something else: the start of the college football season!

It is also one of the best weekends of the year for taking in classic car shows, which is exactly what this writer did on Saturday with a visit to Littleton, North Carolina. That’s where the locally based Stray Cats Hot Rod Association convened for their 24th Annual Rod & Custom Show. And true to its name, there were multiple examples of hot rods and custom-modified vehicles on display.

34th Littleton/Lake Gaston Festival

The hot rod association’s event is one component of the annual Littleton/Lake Gaston Festival organized by the Littleton Lions Club. Held behind the stores on one side of East South Main Street, the festival includes carnival rides, all-day entertainment, food and craft vendors and, of course, vision screenings.

Stray Cats Hot Rod AssociationAs for the classic car component, it is held on the opposite side of the street, well behind Grandpa’s Kitchen with entrance made along Ferguson Street.

Like other shows of its kind, the Stray Cats began welcoming cars at 8 a.m. Registrants first covered the parking lots before taking over the adjoining grass areas. Judging was held throughout the morning and early afternoon with an awards ceremony at 3 p.m. My visit, however, was limited to the morning hours, but I believe the photos included here offer a good representation of the vehicles on hand.

Photos of the 24th Annual & Custom Show

Without further ado, I present to you a photo selection from this year’s show.
