Emerging Alliances Point to Further Auto Industry Consolidation

March 28, 2019 by admin

What a month! March 2019 may go down as a pivotal time in automotive history as auto industry consolidation talk strengthens anew.

The news is coming from all corners of the globe as multiple players talk, while others forge alliances. Consolidation certainly isn’t anything new, but the future absolutely points to a host of mergers and alliances taking shape.

2019 Ford Ranger
Volkswagen and Ford are forging a pact that might lead to a Ranger-based pickup truck for VW.

Ford, Volkswagen Tie One On

Heading the alliance news this month is a not-yet-signed agreement between Ford and Volkswagen. According to Reuters, the two automotive giants have been in talks for months and appear ready to sign a pact.

That agreement may involve Volkswagen purchasing a stake in Argo AI, which is Ford’s artificial intelligence company. Argo AI represents the blue oval’s autonomous vehicle and artificial intelligence aspirations, a company launched in 2016. Volkswagen doesn’t have an equivalent business, thus investing in Ford’s venture would give it instant access to AI.

At the same time, Ford appears ready to supply Volkswagen with a pickup truck. The German automaker doesn’t have a model for the American market, though its car-based Amarok is sold in multiple markets. Although the type of truck has not yet been identified, we believe a model closely based on the midsize Ford Ranger pickup truck seems likely.

Daimler, Geely Go Beyond Ride-Hailing

Daimler and Geely are expected to soon sign an agreement which would allow the Chinese automaker to purchase a 50-percent stake in Daimler’s Smart small-car brand. Smart has been languishing for years and talk of the brand’s demise emerged just this week.

But Smart may find new life yet as an electric car manufacturer with the Chinese market its main source. The Financial Times reports that an announcement will be confirmed at the Shanghai Auto Show in April.

The two manufacturers are no strangers, although Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz and Geely’s Volvo brands are direct competitors. In 2018, the two companies joined forces to form a China-based ride-hailing company reports CNN.

A Suitor for FCA

The late Fiat Chrysler executive Sergio Marchionne fashioned one of the most unlikely alliances earlier this decade as he married a pair of Italian and American automakers, but he was never satisfied that it would last apart from further consolidation.

Indeed, Marchionne was one of the earlier proponents of global consolidation, noting as far back as in 2009 that there would be “six survivors in the global volume sector.” Marchionne stated his viewpoint during the midst of a worldwide downturn in auto sales that nearly sunk Chrysler and GM and put other manufacturers in jeopardy.

Marchionne passed away in 2018, but the spirit of FCA consolidation lives on. Notably, in the past few weeks, we have heard that both France’s PSA Groupe (Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, et al) and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance seems interested in acquiring FCA. Jeep and Ram are FCA’s two strongest and most profitable brands and are the top prizes here. At the same time, a merger or an alliance might help FCA improve its performance in Asia, especially in China where it is particularly weak.

But these two possible companies/alliances aren’t the only ones interested in FCA. Several years back the Volkswagen Group targeted Fiat Chrysler, but its overtures were rebuffed. More recently, Hyundai expressed its own interest in the company, but it wasn’t planning to make a move until after FCA’s share values fell.

Limited Agreement Auto Trends

While further consolidation seems likely, more limited agreements between competing manufacturers will continue to emerge.

One of the results of this kind of agreement brought the Toyota Supra back to the market. The Supra’s return comes thanks to an agreement between Toyota and BMW, as the former used the latter’s Z4 platform to build its sports car. Toyota has also worked with Subaru to produce its 86 sports car, and may continue that pact for a new generation model.

Toyota, thanks to its size and deep pockets, may yet avoid the entire alliance and consolidation trend. With stakes in Daihatsu, Suzuki, Subaru, and Mazda, the company can turn to its partners to supply vehicles it doesn’t have. Further, it may work with its associated companies to spread development costs as needed without ceding control.

The Fifth-Generation Toyota RAV4 Evaluated

March 25, 2019 by admin

2019 Toyota RAV4
The 2019 Toyota RAV4 crosses the Rocky River Truss Bridge, an aged viaduct in Chatham County, NC. Constructed in 1921 and refurbished in 1959, this single-lane bridge carries traffic across NC 1953 (35°37’27.0″N 79°11’58.0″W). Its overall condition is rated “poor.”
The bridge is slated for replacement, eventually.

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is a compact crossover utility vehicle with room for five. it comes with a four-cylinder engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and offers all-wheel drive. A hybrid variant is marketed separately.

Launched stateside in 1996, the RAV4 has gradually grown in size and importance. Indeed, it is now Toyota’s best-selling model, even surpassing sales of the midsize Camry sedan and the compact Corolla — intrepid models both.

For 2019, the RAV4 is all-new. It is based on Toyota’s latest global architecture and is slightly longer and wider than the preceding model.

2019 Toyota RAV4 Overview

Toyota offers the 2019 RAV4 in five trims: LE ($25,500), XLE ($27,300), XLE Premium ($29,500), Adventure ($32,900), and Limited ($33,500). Add $1,060 for the delivery, processing & handling (destination) fee. All models come with ToyotaCare, a no-cost maintenance plan that covers most expenditures for two years or 25,000 miles as well all as roadside assistance for two years and unlimited miles.

As for the hybrid version, it arrives later this model year. You’ll find LE, XLE, and Limited trims.

We’ll cover over the various features offered. In the meantime, an assemblage of packages set these models apart beyond trim differences. For instance, the base LE model offers a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert for $590. Bundle it with the available tonneau cover and you’ll pay $680.

Head to the XLE trim and you’ll find the XLE Convenience Package ($1,295) with it power liftgate, 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and heated front seats. Increase your outlay to $2,335 and the package adds Entune 3.0 Plus, a six-speaker audio system with an 8-inch touchscreen, four charging ports, HD Radio, Siri Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, Wi-Fi connect, and other amenities. It also includes a security system.

The mid-range XLE Premium trim offers the Entune 3.0 audio system with 11 speakers ($1,620). For $2,885, the package adds such driver-assist features as intelligent clearance sonar and rear cross-traffic braking. A digital rearview mirror with HomeLink and a Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging round out the offering here.

The Adventure trim bundles the Entune system with navigation and an 11-speaker JBL audio system for $2,470. For $3,735, the package adds a power tilt-and-slide moonroof, and the driver-assist features found in the XLE Premium’s trim.

At the Limited level, you’ll find a Limited Grade Advanced Technology Package ($1,605). This package combines Entune audio, navigation, a bird’s eye view camera, Qi-compatible wireless smartphone technology, and a power liftgate with the JBL 11-speaker audio system. For an additional $200, Toyota adds a panoramic glass roof with a power tilt-and-slide moonroof.

A Matter of Style

And now for an essential disclaimer. My wife and I have owned or leased a Toyota RAV4 for many years, beginning with the 2004 model, followed by the 2013 and 2017 versions. Needless to say, when our current lease ends in 2020, the RAV4 will be among the few models considered. My wife also likes the Nissan Rogue. As for me, I’d be happy to upgrade to the Toyota RAV4. The forthcoming Ford Bronco also has my attention.

As a RAV4 acolyte, it is easy to spot the changes from year to year as well as from generation to generation. Happily, the improvements with the fifth-generation RAV4 are more evolutionary than revolutionary, but they are quite evident nonetheless.

Among the standout exterior features include the front fascia with its gaping grille and fog lamp cutouts, squared wheel wells, and rear roof pillar — the last window cants forward, instead of backward. Lighting changes, updated wheels, and fresh signature lines are also present.

The base model comes with multi-LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, 17-inch steel wheels, power side mirrors, black roof rails, and chrome exhaust tips. As for upgrades, there are many and include fog lamps, a two-tone exterior color, heated side mirrors, puddle lights, a power tilt-and-slide moonroof, 17- or 19-inch alloy wheels, and a power liftgate. The Adventure trim adds special roof rails,

2019 Toyota RAV4

Inside, the cabin is slightly roomier than before. It offers sufficient room for five, although four is the ideal. We’ve witnessed the growing sophistication of this model down through the years and that’s something consumers should find pleasing.

Our test XLE Premium model featured ample soft-touch materials across the lower dashboard and door inlays. Splitting the upper and lower dash sections is chrome-like trim. The upper portion is sculpted plastic, but with ample creases and lines to add distinction.

One of the biggest changes involves the touchscreen display as it is bolted to the top of the center stack where the two dashboard sections meet. We like the look of the screen as well as its location.

Beneath the screen is the usual knob settings for managing the climate control system. At the base of the stack is a large open area for housing smartphones and making a connection. Switches for the automatic parking brake and hill hold are to the left of the transmission stick.

Our all-wheel-drive model added three switches to the eco, normal and sport modes offered in the front-wheel-drive models. Here, you’ll find snow, mud & sand, and rock & dirt settings.

2019 Toyota RAV4As for the seats, they’re trimmed in fabric on most models or dressed in SofTex, which is a brand of synthetic leather. Our test model had this material and we found it very comfortable and pleasing to the eye. An 8-way power driver’s seat is standard. The rear seat is a 60-40 split fold-down arrangement with a center armrest and two cup holders.

The list of standard features include power accessories, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, and air conditioning. Trim-level and package upgrades bring in a leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, and rear outboard heated seats.

Safety & Technology

With a new model to show for it, the Toyota RAV4 will undergo the usual safety tests as conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Auto Trends prefers the IIHS’ tests as they’re more rigorous and detailed.

In any case, we expect the new model to achieve at least a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and perhaps win its highly coveted “+” rating if this model’s advanced driver-assist features and available headlight upgrades pass muster.

In any case, the RAV4 comes with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0), which includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, radar cruise control, road sign assist and lane tracing assist. Notably, this system builds on the company’s standard Star Safety System with automatic smart stop technology.

2019 Toyota RAV4

Optional to the XLE and standard on the upper trims is a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, intelligent clearance sonar with rear cross-traffic braking. All models have at least some type of security system.

As for audio packages, the standard system includes a 7-inch touchscreen, six speakers, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, and four USB ports. Among the upgrades are an 8-inch touchscreen, HD Radio, up to 11 speakers, and navigation.

On the Road

Under the hood resides a familiar 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. For the current-generation model, Toyota tweaked this engine to make it more powerful and thermally efficient. Thus, it now delivers 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. That’s up significantly from the 176 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque furnished previously.

Another change Toyota made was upgrading from a six-speed automatic transmission to an eight-speed. What’s interesting about this combination is that it delivers more power and better efficiency to the RAV4. The previous front-wheel-drive model earned 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway for a combined 25 mpg. This year, that same model earns 26/35/30 mpg. That’s a 5 mpg improvement.

2019 Toyota RAV4

As for performance, the RAV4 delivers adequate step-off power and decent passing power. Under a full load, the engine has its work cut out for it, but it doesn’t lag. The new transmission shifts smoothly between gears. No hunting was felt or observed. This SUV’s steering provides a level of connectivity we like and it handles well.

With available all-wheel drive, you’ll find the system does an admirable job of shifting power from front to back as well as from side to side. Beginning at the Adventure trim, the system employs torque vectoring, which transfers power to the wheels with the most traction. This system will cost you about 2 mpg, however.

Concerning ride comfort, the RAV4 matches the segment leaders. The cabin, though, isn’t the quietest in the segment. In fact, under hard acceleration, you’ll hear the engine. That’s fine for a V8, but not so much for a conventional four-pot.

There is one other important point of note: most models have a 1,500-pound towing capacity. That’s sufficient for a small camper. Choose the Adventure trim and towing capacity increases to 2,900 pounds (front-wheel drive) or to 3,500 pounds (all-wheel drive). This enhanced towing capability is something to consider when comparing small SUVs.

Auto Trends Recommends

The Toyota RAV4 has a lot going for it. The new design, upgraded powertrain, and advanced safety technologies keep it competitive in a dynamic segment. Moreover, we’re glad that Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility is finally here. Unfortunately, Google Android Auto fans will have to wait at least another year for integration.

We rarely recommend the base model for any vehicle. And this holds true for the RAV4. You might start your search with the XLE trim, but we think you’d be in a better position to consider the XLE Premium as it offers superior bang for the buck. We always recommend all-wheel drive for anyone living in the northern states or wherever wintry conditions take hold. As for the hybrid, its late arrival may yet supply a justifiable alternative, especially if the price discrepancy between the standard and hybrid models is under $2,000.

All in all, the 2019 Toyota RAV4 does what it needs to do and better. It supplies a viable alternative to the Corolla and Camry, and fits nicely between the smaller C-HR and the midsize Highlander utility vehicles.

Nissan Kicks SR Revisited

March 21, 2019 by admin

2019 Nissan Kicks
Nissan offers the front-wheel-drive-only Kicks in three trims.

The Nissan Kicks is an affordable utility vehicle for first-time car buyers. It does to the utility sphere what the Nissan Versa does in the car market, by providing a cost-effective model that blends style, utility, and comfort. With a starting price of under $20,000, the Kicks may convert not a few car owners to this Nissan utility.

We covered the Kicks before, having taken delivery of a 2018 model last year and putting it through the paces. The model returns without major changes. However, we noticed it is slightly less powerful this year, but it is also more efficient than before.

2019 Nissan Kicks Overview

Nissan offers the 2019 Kicks in three trims: S ($18,540), SV ($20,250), and SR ($20,870). All models have front-wheel drive and come with a four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable transmission. If you want all-wheel drive, you’ll need to begin your small Nissan crossover search with the Rogue Sport.

As for upgrades, Nissan keeps the Kicks’ factory-installed options to a minimum. Indeed, there is only one true package available as the other upgrades include various individual enhancements.

2019 Nissan Kicks
The contrasting white roof supplies this Kicks with added panache.

For instance, a set of 17-inch black alloy wheels ($495) are available. Further, you’ll find premium paint ($395), premium paint with two-tone body/roof ($595) and two-tone paint body/roof alone ($200). These upgrades are not available with the base S model.

An SR Premium Package ($1,000) is available with the SV and SL trims. This package includes a special Bose Personal Plus sound system with the speakers embedded. Furthermore, there are various individual upgrades available through the dealership, including a rear spoiler ($360), illuminated kick plates ($370), and a Rockford Fosgate Audio system ($595).

Highlights of a 2019 Nissan Kicks

Since we just reviewed the Kicks just seven months earlier, we’ll go over the highlights of the Kicks this go around. Also, we’ve updated this model’s specifications, as listed at the end of this article.

1. Stepping up from a car isn’t a huge leap.

We understand that crossovers cost more than cars. Certainly, that’s something manufacturers must address if they want to capture more first-time car buyers. In any case, Nissan has always had one of the least costly models on the market with its Versa sedan.

The Versa starts out at about $13,500, which is a strong price point for a new car. You’ll pay about $6,000 more for a base Kicks, but it comes with a CVT and more standard amenities than the Versa. In particular, the Kicks is just $2,000 more than the Sentra sedan, a model that offers a better shopping comparison than the Versa.

2019 Nissan Kicks
You won’t find navigation, but available smartphone connectivity will take you there.

2. You can’t get all-wheel drive.

Most competing models in this segment supply standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. Like the Toyota C-HR and the upcoming Hyundai Venue, the Nissan Kicks is front-wheel-drive only.

The reason for this is likely two-fold:

1), the slightly larger Rogue Sport offers an all-wheel-drive option and that’s where Nissan wants to direct your search, and

2), the relatively light Kicks isn’t encumbered by additional running gear.

3. Fuel efficiency is a strong point.

Speaking of weight, the Nissan Kicks weighs no more than 2,672 pounds. That’s 200 to 300 fewer pounds than such competitors as the Ford EcoSport, Jeep Renegade, and Honda’s HR-V.

Combine its light weight with an efficient four-cylinder engine and thrifty continuously variable transmission, and you’ll enjoy excellent fuel economy for a utility vehicle. Indeed, at an observed 35 mpg, the Kicks beat the EPA-estimated 33 combined mpg for this model. In fact, that’s at least 5 mpg better than several other models in this segment, including the Chevrolet Trax and Hyundai Kona.

2019 Nissan Kicks
The available imitation leather seats feature double-stitched trim.

2019 Nissan Kicks

4. Cut above styling for the taking.

The Nissan Kicks doesn’t scream budget. Far from it. Its exterior styling matches other Nissan models, including its take on the brand’s “V motion” grille. Our test model came dressed in two-tone blue with a contrasting white roof, delivering a sporty and an elegant take on this model’s look. The upswept beltline at the rear roof pillar is a nice touch too, something seen on more expensive models such as the Volvo XC40.

Inside, the cabin offers a simple, yet attractive look. We noticed that the seat materials were an improvement over last year, then realized the optional “Prima-Tex” or imitation leather seats were the difference. You have to order the SR Premium Package to get them, but they’re worth it. Also, the package adds heated front seats.

5. Technology we like.

Nissan supplies the 2019 Kicks with a number of technologies, including three USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, and Siri Eyes Free. You’ll also find Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility and a 7-inch color touchscreen display. All models come with a rearview monitor and automatic emergency braking.

Also available is blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and an around-view monitor. You won’t find adaptive cruise control or navigation with this model, as the latter is remedied by using smartphone connectivity to get you there. By and large, we expect manufacturers to rely less on internal navigation in the future as ubiquitous smartphones manage that function.

2019 Nissan Kicks
Power is down slightly this year from 125 to 122 hp and 115 lb.-ft. of torque to 114.
The Kick’s fuel economy is unchanged.

6. Lots of room for its size.

The Nissan Kicks seems large for its class. On paper, it seats five, although we think four is the ideal. Still, you can place three people side-by-side on the rear 60/40 split-folding bench seat in a pinch.

Upfront, the seats are comfortable, supportive and offer the kind of head, shoulder, hip and legroom we prefer. The rear seat may be tight for tall folk, but if you have two children in car seats, that space is nearly perfect.

We like the standard cargo space, which measures 25.3 cubic feet or 53.1 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. The Kicks’ seems positively cavernous compared to the previous Juke, which measures just 10.5 cubic feet behind the second seat and 35.9 cubic feet maximum. Further, the Juke’s rear seat was simply too tight for adult passengers.

Auto Trends Recommends

Shop for a 2019 Kicks and you’ll find a $2,330 price spread between the three trims. We suggest starting your search with the SV model as it upgrades the standard 16-inch steel wheels to 17-inch alloy wheels, adds heated side mirrors, and supplies smartphone compatibility. You’ll also find trim material upgrades, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, and a tonneau cover.

All in all, the Nissan Kicks delivers a very competitive model for the segment. It delivers nearly all the features consumers in a budget-friendly manner.

Sportback Performance: Buick Regal GS

March 19, 2019 by admin

2019 Buick Regal GS
The latest Buick Regal line is all-new as of 2018 and includes this GS model.

Buick’s identity in the GM fold places this brand squarely between Chevrolet and Cadillac. It shares this position with GMC, as the two brands are typically sold under the same roof.

The Buick brand has successfully made its appeal to younger buyers and is no longer considered an “old people’s brand.” Its strongest market by far is China, which is why Buick is around today and not Pontiac. Still, GM’s middle brand has its work cut out for itself as it builds more utility vehicles and drops car models as consumer tastes shift.

One car model that is still around is the Buick Regal. It remains one of Buick’s most recognized names, with the earliest models dating to the early 1970s. Those rear-wheel-drive models were the midsize coupes and sedans of that era and later included a wagon. Later models switched to front-wheel drive before the nameplate was canceled in 2004.

Buick resurrected the Regal in 2011, relying on GM’s Opel division to supply it with a four-door sedan. For seven model years, the Regal brought premium features to the midsize sedan segment, although it measured slightly smaller than most competing models.

2019 Buick Regal GS

The Current-Generation Buick Regal

Beginning in 2018 and continuing for another year, Buick once again relies on Opel to supply it with Regal models. But there are a few important differences of note:

1), Opel is no longer owned by GM. The brand is now owned by France’s PSA Groupe, which includes Peugeot, and

2), The sedan is dead, but two new body styles roll out. The Buick Regal is now defined by three models — the Regal TourX, Regal Sportback, and the Regal GS. The first model is a wagon, the second two are “sportback” models, which is another name for a hatchback.

2019 Buick Regal GS Overview

Buick supplied us with a 2019 Regal GS sedan, therefore that’s the model we’ll discuss herein. We already evaluated the Regal TourX. Likely, the standard Regal Sportback offers a similar experience, at least from a driving perspective.

What’s the main difference between the Sportback and GS? Its what’s found under the hood, that’s what. The TourX and Sportback have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 250 horsepower and upwards of 295 pound-feet of torque (265 with front-wheel drive). The Regal GS has a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 310 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque. It also has standard all-wheel drive.

2019 Buick Regal GS

A Matter of Design

The Regal GS has a handsome look with a bold front fascia, crisp lines, and a modern style. Front to back, the look is elegant and sporty. You’d be forgiven if you thought it was a sedan even as the big rear window eases down to a rear deck.

It is only when you inspect the rear window that you realize that its size is proportionally larger than what’s found in most sedans. Flick the tri-shield log and the hatch rises up, just like a utility vehicle.

Hatchbacks of old stood out from the rear and sometimes included a pair of clasps (here’s looking at you, Ford Pinto). The Regal Sportback/GS does its best to look like a sedan and that’s a very good thing.

2019 Buick Regal GS

Buick dresses the GS in its own sport front and rear fascias as well as side skirts and a rear spoiler. You’ll also find 19-inch alloy wheels and performance brakes with Brembo front calipers. LED lighting elements amplify the tail lamps. Buyers may also select an Appearance Package ($485), which adds such features as LED headlamps, headlamps with auto leveling, and cornering lamps. Buick also bundles wireless charging with this package.

Inside, the GS’ cabin is roomy, uncluttered and comfortable. But especially up front. Though all-wheel drive, the GS sits barely above other cars in this segment. Still, the sight lines are wide and unobstructed. The dashboard is layered, but not overstocked. Other standout features include a three-dial instrument panel, a padded steering wheel with a flat bottom, and an orderly center stack with a touchscreen, knobs and switches to control the cabin features. Buick also includes metal pedals to enhance this model’s sporty persona.

The front sport seats with twin stitching are sufficiently bolstered and supply sufficient back and neck support. They have the look of very expensive sport seats, but they’re as thickly padded as some. Happily, they’re not over bolstered to the point where your hip points feel squeezed.

The rear seat holds three, but tall passengers may find the sloping roofline not to their liking. It shaves away about 1.5 inches of headroom compared with the TourX and that makes for a noticeable difference. On the other hand, legroom and hip room is an improvement over the previous sedan. Indeed, the GS has about an extra 3.5 inches between the wheels over the previous sedan.

2019 Buick Regal GS

Standard features include full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, a heated steering wheel, leather seats, heated and cooled front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench seat. The lone package offered is a Buick Interior Protection Package ($200), which brings in a cargo tray along with first- and second-row all-weather floor mats.

Behind the rear seat is 31.5 cubic feet of storage space, which is about double what you’d find in a comparable sedan. It also rivals what some small crossover SUVs offer. Drop down the rear seat and that space expands to 60.5 cubic feet. Now you know why the Regal Sportback/GS is an attractive alternative to a utility vehicle.

Safety & Technology

We don’t yet have a safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but we expect the 2019 Regal in all its configurations will fare well. Standard safety features include a rearview monitor and Teen Driver, the latter making it possible for parents to monitor teen driving behavior.

Additional safety features can be had through the available Driver Confidence Package II GS ($1,690). This package bundles such features as forward collision alert, forward automatic braking, front pedestrian braking, adaptive cruise control, following distance indicator, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and a head-up display. This is one area where Buick trails the competition — most manufacturers offer some if not all driver-assist safety features as standard equipment.

On the tech front, Buick equips the Regal GS with an 8-inch touchscreen, voice recognition, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility. You’ll also find HD Radio, satellite radio, OnStar services, and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability.

Also available is a Sights and Sounds Package ($945). This package ties together remote start, navigation, and an 8-speaker audio system.

On the Road

Is the Buick Regal GS a performance model? That depends on how you define the term. Typically, any model with performance attributes has enhanced power, steering, handling, and an adaptive drivetrain. This Buick has all that.

Under the hood is a 3.6-liter, V6 engine with 310 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque. Buick pairs this engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The performance numbers are laudable as they beat every other model with a naturally aspirated V6 engine, although there aren’t many left.

2019 Buick Regal GS

For instance, the Toyota Camry with its 3.5-liter V6 earns 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. There’s also the turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine powering the Ford Fusion Sport. This one bangs out 325 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Notably, the Fusion Sport and the Nissan Altima are two models available that offer all-wheel drive, which happens to come standard with the Subaru Legacy.

Competing luxury models usually offer standard rear- or front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. However, the Audi A5 Sportback supplies standard all-wheel drive.

Step-off acceleration is strong and passing power is equally satisfying with the Regal GS. You’ll find both “sport” and “GS” drive control switches, with both adding more weight to the steering, faster transmission shift points and more “boom” from the exhaust system. The sport setting, however, barely seemed different from the default or “normal” setting.

Torque-vectoring all-wheel drive sets the Regal GS apart from the pack. That said, it isn’t on the level of the Audi A5 Sportback in driving dynamics as the pricier of these two German models navigates twisty roads and pulls out of corners with all four wheels firmly planted. Body roll is more evident in the Buick than it is in the Audi.

Is there something missing here? Yes! Paddle shifters. This is an egregious omission for a car claiming performance attributes as it removes an important slice of driver engagement. You can’t get a manual gearbox with the Regal and, sadly, you can’t control shifting with AutoStick or paddle shifters.

Auto Trends Recommends

The Buick Regal GS is a special trim level of the Regal Sportback. If the general design interests you and you’re less concerned about performance, then the standard model may appeal to you. It also starts precisely $14,000 less than the GS. That said, we think one of the better-equipped trims, such as the Essence — with its leather seating, heated front seats, and available all-wheel drive is the place to begin your search.

As for the Regal GS, its appeal targets a narrow range of drivers. Besides the mainstream sedans, there are two models that share its body style in this segment — the Audi A5 Sportback and the Kia Stinger. The Buick is priced between the two, but the best value and performance lies with the Kia. The Stinger also offers standard rear-wheel drive with available all-wheel drive and two choices of engines, including a blistering twin-turbo V6.

Not Again! Cadillac’s Naming Convention Adds a New Designation

March 14, 2019 by admin

1960 Cadillac de Ville
This 1960 Cadillac de Ville offers a classic design and a memorable name.

Remember when a Cadillac was easily identified by its model name? Among those vehicles, we had the Cadillac Eldorado, Coupe de Ville, Seville, and Escalade, with each one representing something distinct in our own minds.

Well, the traditional Cadillac naming convention was tossed in the early 2000s, as the Seville became the STS and the DeVille was renamed the DTS. Those changes brought a European-style nomenclature to GM’s luxury marque, aligning the brand with Germany’s finest, including Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

Naming Convention Theater

Once again, Cadillac plans to adjust its naming convention, something it already did a few years back when the previous three-letter nomenclature was replaced by a three-digit alphanumeric arrangement.

Thus, all utility vehicles, except for the Escalade, now begin with an XT, followed by a number (as in Cadillac XT4), while all car models are identified by a CT and are also followed by a number (as in Cadillac CT6).

The new arrangement will keep the current naming convention, but add a series of numbers, which will identify the engine, according to The Detroit News. As a result, the upcoming 2020 Cadillac XT6 has badging that’ll identify it as the Cadillac XT6 AWD 400. AWD, by the way, is for all-wheel drive.

Cadillac XT4
An additional number will be added to the rear of Cadillac models beginning in 2020.

The latter three-number designation explains the engine’s performance, although that number is rounded up. Perhaps of much more significance is that the new number is based on the engine’s torque as measured in newton-meters, not pound-feet. Torque represents an engine’s pulling power and is always mentioned after a vehicle’s horsepower, which is how we measure engine power at peak RPMs.

So, a Cadillac XT6 400 represents a model powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. How does the 400 designation fit in? Well, with metric the pound-feet becomes 373-newton meters, therefore Cadillac is simply rounding up as it badges this model.

From US Customary to Metric

Using newton-meters aligns Cadillac with the European style, with the latter based entirely on the metric system. It changes the current measuring arrangement, which blends the US customary (and imperial) measuring system with metric — engines are no longer measured in cubic feet, but in liters. Even so, most of a vehicle’s dimensions are measured in inches and feet, such as the wheelbase, a truck bed’s length, and interior legroom.

Oddly, just as Cadillac switches to newton meters, it is leaving the way it measures horsepower alone. Visit Cadillac’s media site and you’ll find two sets of numbers for horsepower. The second one measures it in kilowatts, thus 310 horsepower becomes 229 kilowatts. But that first number has no impact on badging. Only the torque does.

2016 Cadillac Escalade
The Cadillac Escalade is the lone model to escape the brand’s modern naming convention.

Here Come EVs

So, why the change? Is it simply to make our heads spin? According to GM, there is a method to this madness.

Indeed, there is. Like other automakers, GM is in the process of electrifying its fleet as it expands its EV offerings. Specifically, electric vehicles produce a tremendous amount of torque, a performance number GM will emphasize going forward.

That number will be fixed to the rear of its vehicles just as you’ll find the “400” label on the back of the XT6. Because engine displacement is not a factor with EVs, GM apparently believes it needs some way of easily identifying a performance number and affixing it to its electric-propulsion vehicles. Thus, it creates a common number that unifies its electric and non-electric offerings, and may aid in the transition from gas to electric.

Help Us, Please

GM believes that the expanded naming convention will assist consumers, while giving owners something to brag about.

At the same time, the change won’t cover every model. Thankfully, Cadillac’s performance V-Series will simply include the V as in the CT4-V. Oh, by the way, the CT4 will replace the current ATS sedan. Yes, yet another model name to remember.

6 Points About Buying a Used Car

March 13, 2019 by admin

You’re in the market for a used car, but you don’t know what to expect. Prices are all over the place and if you haven’t bought a car in a while, you’ll likely experience sticker shock, even for a used vehicle. Before you shop, keep the following in mind.

sixPoint No. 1: How much can you afford for a used car? You should know that a used car in decent condition will most likely cost you at least $5,000. That’s a lot of money! If your budget is considerably lower than that, then expect to find vehicles that are at least 10 years old and perhaps not in the best condition. If you’re handy with car repairs, then the problems may not bother you.

Point No. 2: Decide what type of vehicle you want. Are you shopping for a coupe or a sedan? Are you considering an SUV or a van? Do you want a sports car or some other type of vehicle? Is there a make or model that interests you? Narrowing your parameters first will make your search easier. Identify the vehicle body style that is right for you and then shop accordingly.

Ford Focus ST
2015 Ford Focus ST.

Point No. 3: Consider your purchase options. When buying used, you can shop a car dealer or purchase from a private party. Both options have advantages and disadvantages. Buying a car from a dealer will cost you more, but you should also get a warranty. Buying privately will save you money, but the lack of a warranty means you’re on your own. In any case, it is good to check a site such as Kelley Blue Book or Edmunds.com to get pricing information. From there, you’ll have a framework from which to negotiate. And by all means, negotiate!</a>

Point No. 4: How will you pay for it? If you have enough cash to buy a used car, then you’re in great shape. If not, how will you pay for it? Used car financing is possible, but rates are higher than for new cars. You’ll also pay a higher interest rate if your credit is only satisfactory or poor. The more money you can put down, the lower your monthly payments too. Also consider what a car will cost you in property taxes, the registration fee, insurance, gasoline, and maintenance. Know your full costs going in and you won’t be surprised later.

2016 Infiniti Q70L.
2016 Infiniti Q70L.

Point No. 5: Inspect the car carefully. You’ve found a car, SUV, van, or truck that interests you. Now for the hard part: determining whether it is in decent condition. A thorough check from bumper to bumper and from top to bottom is essential. This means lifting the hood and checking wires, belts, hoses, and fluids. It also means crawling under the car to examine the suspension system, brakes, calipers, and exhaust system. Check the tires too — look for signs of uneven wear and aging. Obtain a car history report too from a service such as AutoCheck.

Point No. 6: Have a mechanic inspect the car. Unless you do a stellar job of checking a car yourself, you may want to hire a mechanic to do the check for you. Typically, you’ll pay upwards of $100 for an inspection. But that review can pay for itself quickly, alerting you to potential problems or avoiding a money pit altogether. Regardless, a second set of eyes may see something that you might miss.

Used Car Considerations

Carefully shop for a used car and you won’t regret your purchase. Make a sound buying decision and you may get several years out of your car, provided you follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual and address pressing problems immediately.

Highlights of the 2019 Nissan Titan XD

March 11, 2019 by admin

2019 Nissan Titan XD
The 2019 Nissan Titan XD is now in its fourth year.

We’re no stranger to the Nissan Titan XD, a model we first previewed in December 2015 ahead of its introduction.

To quickly clear the air, there are two full-size pickup trucks from Nissan. The standard Titan rolled out in 2004, skipped the 2016 model year before the second-generation model followed in 2017. In 2016, as Nissan was readying the new model, the company released the Titan XD, which is neither a light- nor a heavy-duty pickup truck. Notably, the trucks are similar, but each sits on uniquely separate fully-boxed ladder frames.

With the Titan XD, Nissan identified a “white space” between the two model segments, which is where this model sits. In other words, if Ford wanted to supply a model between its standard F-150 and Super Duty variants, that’s where you would find it. The same goes for Chevrolet, GMC, and Ram.

Nissan’s white space endeavor is all about providing customers with a cost-effective solution to heavy-duty models, which also supply literally tons of towing capacity. The company believes that there are customers who want the size of the larger pickup trucks, but they don’t need the towing capacity (and the attendant higher cost) of a Super Duty or other competing model.

Thus, the 2019 Titan XD starts around $33,000 and peaks at nearly double that price. Perhaps, more importantly, is that a Cummins turbo-diesel V8 engine is in the mix, representing a smaller or more cost-effective alternative to the big types of diesel offered by its competitors. Further, the turbo-diesel supplies a pulling capacity of just under 13,000 pounds (in the 4×2 single cab). That’s more than what any of its light-duty diesel-powered competitors offer.

2019 Nissan Titan XD

The following are the highlights of the 2019 Nissan Titan XD:

1. You now have a choice of three cabs.

Early on, the Titan XD was offered as a Crew (standard four-door) cab model only. But the product line eventually expanded to include King (four-door with rear pivoting rear doors) and single cab models.

Further, Nissan also offers the King cab with “rear seat delete,” which lowers the cost by a few hundred dollars as it frees up interior storage room. The Titan XD now matches its chief competitors in available cab types.

2. The short and long of it.

2019 Nissan Titan XDThe single and king cab models share the same 139.8-inch wheelbase, while the crew cab has 151.6 inches between the wheels.

However, only the single cab comes with an 8-foot (98.5 inches) bed. The other two cab styles have a 6.5-foot (78.7 inches) bed.

2019 Nissan Titan XDThe Titan XD also offers the “Titan Box,” which are located inside the box on both sides of the bed.

The boxes are drainable, watertight and suitable for holding cold drinks. They’re also removable, freeing up bed capacity when needed.

3. Your pick of Endurance and Cummins engines.

The Titan XD gives customers a choice of V8 engines. The standard Endurance 5.6-liter gasoline V8 (390 hp; 394 lb.-ft. of torque) replaced an earlier engine of the same displacement, adding variable valve event & lift and direct-injection technologies.

Nissan also secured an engine from Cummins, the diesel manufacturer which also supplies engines to Ram pickup trucks. A 5.0-liter turbo-diesel V8 (310 hp; 555 lb.-ft. of torque), originally developed by Cummins for Chrysler, became available and serves this Nissan exclusively.

This diesel doesn’t attempt to take on the torque or towing power of the industry’s heavy-duty leaders. Instead, it’s designed to surpass the performance of light-duty trucks and does so with its near 13,000-pound towing capacity.

If you want a Cummins upgrade, you’ll add upwards of $5,630 to your cost.

2019 Nissan Titan XD

4. Different transmissions for each engine.

Nissan uses internally and externally designed transmissions to send power to the wheels. Both transmissions are controlled by a column-mounted shifter.

A 7-speed automatic transmission works with the gasoline engine, while a heavy-duty Aisin 6-speed unit works with the turbo-diesel. The Aisin transmission is specifically designed to handle the elevated torque found in the diesel.

5. Up to five trims available.

Ah, trim levels! They’re what turns a bare-bones model into a luxury vehicle the further you move up the trim range. The Titan XD, though, doesn’t make every trim level available across the entire model range.

2019 Nissan Titan XDFor instance, the regular cab features just two — S and SV, but you do get your choice of two- or four-wheel drive and both engine choices. The S model features a 40/20/40 split fold-down front seat and vinyl flooring. It does, however, include navigation. Choose the SV and you gain carpeted flooring, stain-resistant cloth seats, trailer brake control, and an integrated gooseneck hitch with a 7-pin in-bed wiring harness.

With the king cab, a PRO-4X edition joins the S and SV. What’s interesting about this trim is that it comes with standard four-wheel drive, Bilstein off-road performance shocks, an electronic locking rear differential, a transfer case skid plate, and hill descent control.

2019 Nissan Titan XDChoose the Titan XD crew cab and you’ll find two additional trims, bringing the total to five. You should also know that this model is four-wheel-drive only, regardless of the trim.

The SL brings in such features as remote engine start, leather seats, a power-sliding back window, NissanConnect services and a 10- or 12-speaker Fender audio system. The top-of-the-line Platinum Reserve pulls out all the stops as it includes special aluminum-alloy wheels with painted arch moldings and rocker panels, an around-view monitor, and dark running boards.

6. Numerous packages to choose from.

Besides offering varying trim levels, Nissan supplies Titan XD shoppers with a variety of packages to choose from.

The S 4×2 trims, however, do not offer packages. With the 4×4 models, you’ll find a few, including the S Utility Package ($845, front overhead storage console, factory-applied spray-on bedliner, Class IV tow hitch receiver) and a Heavy Duty Front GAWR Package ($150, high-capacity front springs).

Choose the SV and you’ll find two package choices. The first is the SV Convenience Package ($1,395, automatic headlights, aluminum-alloy wheels, all-season tires, power-heated and manually extended tow mirrors, black step rails, keyless entry with push-button start, voice recognition for audio and navigation, satellite radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, front and rear sonar system, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert). The second one builds on the first (SV Utility Package, $1,145, track channel system with four tie-down cleats, spray-on bedliner, LED under-rail bed lighting, bed-mounted 120-volt power outlet, tailgate area illumination).

2019 Nissan Titan XD

The Pro-4X also offers its own Utility Package ($1,445, 10- or 12-speaker Fender audio with 7-inch color display, power sliding rear window with defroster, bed channel system, LED under-rail bed lighting, tailgate area illumination, 120-volt power outlet, front and rear sonar system, electronic tailgate lock, rear bumper step assist). Building on this package is the Pro-4X Convenience Package ($3,545, remote engine start, leather seats, heated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, four-way power front passenger seat, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, power tilt-and-telescopic steering column). There is also a Premium Package ($1,545, around view monitor, side mirrors with a reverse tilt-down feature, climate-controlled front seats — heating and cooled, Titan boxes).

With the SL trim, you’ll find three packages to choose from. The first one is the Chrome Package ($1,245, chrome-clad aluminum-alloy wheels, chrome-finished front grille, chrome exhaust finisher, metallic kick plates). The second package is the Texas Titan Edition, which builds on the first package ($1,295, exterior Texas Titan edition badging, carpeted floor mats with Texas Titan edition logo, metallic kick plates). The third package is the Midnight edition ($1,250), which adds black-trimmed highlights — fog lights with light surround, front bumper, alloy wheels, door handles, mirrors, badging.

On the top trim is the Platinum Reserve Utility Package ($750, Titan boxes, electronic tailgate lock, rear bumper step assist). There are no other packages available with this well-equipped model.

Titan XD Driving Impressions

My test Titan XD PRO-4X model came with the turbo-diesel engine and managed well on the road. On cold mornings, the diesel took a bit more time to kick in, following a long pause after I pressed the ignition button.

It is easy to forget about the delay, a necessary interlude which allows the ceramic glow plug system to heat the engine. The best way to meet this challenge is by pushing the ignition button twice (keep your foot off the accelerator), allow the glow plug to do its thing.

2019 Nissan Titan XDNext, push the ignition switch with your foot on the pedal and the Titan XD should come to life. Cummins says the system “…significantly reduces start time and electrical current draw, reducing vehicle charging system requirements.” The plugs are designed to last the life of the engine and require no maintenance. If you live where frigid temperatures prevail, then investing in a block heater is a sensible approach.

Like other large pickup trucks, the Titan XD offers a commanding presence on the road. It isn’t especially fast, at least not in diesel form, with modest at best step-off acceleration. Under full throttle, the diesel proves its might, as it supplies robust passing power. I’ve towed with the Titan XD previously and know of its capabilities. The Cummins engine simply expands that capability accordingly.

As for off-roading, we were restricted by where we could go. Winter rains this year were plentiful, which means the usual places were flooded and off limits. Federal lands, including the Uwharrie National Forest in the center of North Carolina, is an ideal place to go off-roading, with it eight marked trails of varying difficulty available. Alas, these trails are shut during the winter season.

A few of the local right-of-ways are also no longer accessible, but there are a handful of gravel and unpaved roads for testing in my area. I headed to two such places, then switched the drive dial to 4High and marched through puddles, sailed across gravel, and conquered muddy terrain. The Titan XD acquitted itself, with its weight and girth supplying an advantage in the open areas I navigated. That said, I wondered how well it would perform on narrow and loose terrain. But then I remembered an earlier evaluation of this model and when a clay goo could not stop it, thanks to 4Low and a locking rear differential.

Auto Trends Recommends

Fierce competition means Nissan has its work cut out for itself in the full-size truck arena. The Titan and Titan XD are ideal for Nissan Frontier owners desiring an upgrade, as they build on the success of its junior partner.

Nabbing conquest buyers is the bigger challenge and that’s where Nissan struggles. All three domestic manufacturers offer more powertrain choices, although the available V6 turbo-diesel engines displace just three liters and fall short of the Nissan’s towing capabilities. The domestic diesels emphasize efficiency, while the Cummins is all about payload and towing.

Thus, if you are full-size pickup truck shopper and plan to keep your vehicle for the long haul, the Cummins option is the way to go. Then shop with the cab and drivetrain choice you want to forge your best deal.

New Ford Super Duty F-600 Unveiled

March 6, 2019 by admin

Ford expands its Super Duty line and updates other vans and trucks.

Ford Super Duty F-600
The F-600 is the latest model in the Super Duty line.

There is a fresh name coming to the Ford Super Duty family, the first new F-Series model we’re seeing in 20 years. The Ford Super Duty F-600 broke cover this week, expanding the automaker’s venerable line of full-size pickup trucks with it.

The 2020 Ford Super Duty F-600 chassis cab is a medium-duty commercial truck with a maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 22,000 pounds. Ford describes the vehicle as a Class 5 Super Duty package with Class 6 commercial truck capabilities. The new model will be available in mid-2020.

Ford’s premise with the F-600 is to offer a commercial truck that closes the gap between payload and truck size. The new model is the same size as the current medium-duty F-550, but smaller than the F-650. It gains an upgraded driveline and chassis components along with higher-weight-rated tires and wheels to meet the elevated GVWR.

All F-600 models come with a choice of three engines, including Ford’s all-new 7.3-liter gas V8, a 6.2-liter gas V8, or a 6.7-liter turbo-diesel V8. Each engine works with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Buyers will find both two- and four-wheel drive models.

Ford Commercial Trucks
Ford’s current lineup of commercial trucks begins with the Transit Connect.

Additional Ford Updates

The Super Duty F-600 isn’t the only news from Ford covering its passenger and commercial vehicles. The Ford E-Series continues, a model which traces its history to the early 1960s. The big van is still available, but only in cutaway and stripped chassis models as the Transit has replaced it in other applications.

For 2021, the E-Series receives an updated interior, including a refreshed instrument panel, Bluetooth compatibility, and USB ports. Ford will also make available a pair of engine calibrations for its new 7.3-liter V8 engine, enabling customers to select the best horsepower and torque application for their needs.

Ford Transit: Work Van, Family Wagon or Fleet King

Refreshed Transit Van

As for the Transit, it receives an important refresh for 2020. Two new engines join the product line, including a 2.0-liter bi-turbo diesel with available all-wheel drive. The other choice is a new 3.5-liter V6 engine with port fuel and direct injection. Both engines work with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Other Transit changes include now standard pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, post-collision braking, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams. A blind-spot information system with trailer coverage and cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a front and rear split-view camera and adjustable speed limiting device are among the available features.

Ford Commercial Vehicles
Clockwise from top left: E-Series, Transit, F-650, Ford Chassis.

An Enhanced Strip Chassis

Other changes coming include an update to Ford’s stripped chassis. The F-53 chassis underpins motor homes and other types of vehicles and will soon feature improved steering, an unto the center of gravity capability on higher GVWR models and improved driving experience. The F-53 and F-59 (commonly used for walk-in vans) will also get a new steering column, instrument cluster, and electrical architecture.

Ford’s additional Super Duty model and update to three other vehicles strengthen its market position. Both GM and Fiat Chrysler also have new medium-duty trucks coming online, therefore the Blue Oval is getting it done to stay out front.

About EV Maker Rivian

March 5, 2019 by admin

Rivian
Rivian has plans for two all-electric models, a pickup truck and a utility vehicle.

Rivian at the L.A. Auto Show

If you’re not familiar with Rivian or you aren’t sure what this company is all about, you’re not alone. Rivian is an electric vehicle manufacturer based in Plymouth, Michigan, but the company has yet to release a single production vehicle of its own. Instead, Rivian took the automotive world by storm when it showcased not one, but two proposed all-electric models at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

While Rivian isn’t a household name, it has earned much attention since the bombshell debut of two upcoming models: the R1T five-passenger pickup truck and the R1S seven-passenger SUV. Both models were developed in secret and offer a projected 400+ miles of electric range. When production begins next year, the company will utilize a manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, to build its EVs.

We gathered some interesting and fun facts about Rivian and present these details to you:

1. Founded by R.J. Scaringe

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe.
Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe.

Who is R.J. Scaringe, the founder of Rivian? Scaringe is a graduate of the Massachusetts of Technology and holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering. He founded Mainstream Motors in 2009, which later became Avera Motors. Avera secured funding from the state of Florida to bring jobs to the Sunshine State, but that never happened, according to the Capitolist.

Scaringe later relocated the company to Michigan where it pushed forward with its electrification efforts under the Rivian name. The company also has a facility in Irvine, California, where it develops batteries, electrical hardware, and vehicle control software. Rivian has a presence in San Jose, where it develops self-driving technology and data. You’ll also find it has an engineering facility in the United Kingdom.

2. The company was developed under cover

How come people haven’t heard about Rivian until recently? For starters, the company is privately held, therefore it could develop under the radar apart from Wall Street scrutiny.

Yet, the automaker has revealed its intentions from time to time, including a partially revealed prototype as far back as 2011. During the ensuing years, it raised capital, moved its business to Michigan to be closer to suppliers, hired staff, secured additional funding, and developed its first two products.

3. About the two models at hand

R1T and R1S aren’t exactly models names we’ll remember. But the two vehicles, a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle respectively, share a common platform and will likely represent Rivian’s first two models.

Both will offer three battery pack options — 105 kWh, 135 kWh, and 180 kWh — with a corresponding increase in vehicle range. The base pack has a projected 230-mile range, while the middle pack should top 300 miles. As for the top pack, this is the 400-mile-plus range you’ve been hearing about.

Every model is equipped with four electric motors, each with a 147 kWh power capacity at the wheels. The fastest model will go from 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds!

Rivian’s R1T pickup truck.

Some other important facts about these vehicles include its 14-inch ground clearance, which makes them suitable for taking off-road. Indeed, the company claims the Rivian models can wade through up to 3.6 feet of water and tackle a steep incline.

Although the truck’s bed is smaller than conventional trucks, its 11,000-pound towing capacity is phenomenal. Both models also come with a huge “frunk,” which is slang for the front trunk. These models sit on its power source, a skateboard design suitable for other applications. Perhaps Rivian will become both a manufacturer and a supplier to the industry.

4. Amazon took a stake in the company

If Amazon is interested in your company, then you know that your business model is a sound one. In February, Amazon invested $700 million in Rivian, taking a minority stake in the automaker. GM was rumored to be interested as well but hasn’t followed through. Likely, GM has decided its own electric efforts are enough. At least for now.

So, why Amazon? For a few reasons, including the company’s interest in pursuing green technology. Specifically, Amazon relies on its own fleet of internal combustion engine vehicles. Rivian can help Amazon transition quickly to electrification and the truck and SUV’s long range should help its package delivery business, with charges taking place during delivery downtime.

5. A former Mitsubishi manufacturing plant for production.

Mitsubishi’s lone U.S. automotive plant was located in Normal, Illinois. It opened in 1988, serving as a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler called Diamond Motors. In the 1990s, Mitsubishi bought out Chrysler’s share, but production declined for years, then ended in 2015.

Mitsubishi tried unsuccessfully to find a buyer before shuttering the plant. Later, the plant was acquired by a liquidation company, which sold it to Rivian in January 2017 for just $16 million. Rivian also secured debt financing from a bank and received tax credits and other incentives from the state.

6. Rivian isn’t Tesla Motors

Rivian and Tesla Motors are not the same. While that’s obvious, the two companies are being compared for obvious reasons: they’re both EV startups based in the U.S.

While Tesla’s ascendancy came before modern electric cars were even on the market and when opposition from mainstream automotive manufacturers was strong, Rivian’s debut comes as the entire market now embraces electric cars. Technology companies, such as Amazon, are steeped in cash and want in. Thus, it is of little surprise that Rivian is attracting interest from everyone and likely won’t face the same headwinds as Tesla did.

No of this means Rivian is a shoe in. Like Tesla, the company has to prove itself and its product. Both companies may need to forge alliances with other automakers to survive long term. Perhaps the two will cooperate in some way, but that isn’t likely to happen in the short run.

Rivan, We’re Watching You

Now that Rivian has broken cover, it will be interesting to watch its future moves. We’ll keep an eye on the company and will bring you the important updates moving forward.

If this is the kind of company you’d like to work for, the good news is that Rivian is hiring. They’ll eventually hire factory line workers, but they’re currently hiring an assortment of engineers, marketing people, computer experts, and office staff. While most positions listed are in Michigan, the other facilities are also building out, including the Illinois manufacturing plant.

Refreshed and Reinvigorated:
2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS

March 1, 2019 by admin

2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS
The refreshed 2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS features updated front and rear fascias,
hood extractor and a new wheel design.

The chief domestic manufacturers may be turning their backs on most car models, but left untouched are the muscle cars we love. These models include the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger and Charger, and the Ford Mustang, each of which delivers aggressive styling, potent engines, and timeless value.

The segment hasn’t always been as strong as it is today, especially when federal regulators instituted tough emissions and safety measures, beginning in the 1970s. Entire model lines, such as the Ford Torino, Dodge Charger, and the Buick GNX were canceled. Later, some of the brands that supported such models as the Mercury Cougar, Plymouth Roadrunner, Olds 442, and Pontiac Tempest and Firebird were discontinued.

Happily, the segment received a boost when modern models from Dodge and Chevrolet joined the Ford Mustang to supply the market with a current take on automotive sports coupe performance. These models offer more power, better steering and handling, and technologies the originals never had. Though demand is only a fraction of what we saw in the 1960s and 1970s, the core is strong and consumers love them.

2019 Chevrolet Camaro Overview

The 2019 Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette continue to uphold the performance car banner for Chevy, although the latter is most definitely a sports car. As for the Camaro, the current-generation model rolled out in 2016, six years after the nameplate was restored.

For 2019, the Camaro is refreshed, sporting revised front and rear fascias along with other design changes. Chevrolet added a new infotainment interface and introduced an LE performance package to its base models.

2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Chevrolet offers the 2019 Camaro in LS, LT (1LT, 2LT and 3LT), SS (1SS and 2SS) and ZL1 models. All but the LS are also available as a convertible. The competing Mustang also has a convertible, while the Challenger does not.

Prices range from $25,995 to $62,995 for the coupe and $32,495 to $70,695 for the convertible. All prices include the $995 destination charge. Yes, it is entirely possible to load the Camaro with every conceivable amenity and push the final price to $75,000. That may sound crazy, but it is in line with the top prices fetched by its competitors.

Camaro SS: Oh, Yes!

For the third time, Chevrolet sent a 2019 Camaro SS my way, the only Camaro models I’ve ever tested for publication. I’ve driven the others, but the SS is the best expression of Camaro performance at least until the ZL1 came along.

Before we look at all things SS, the “lesser” Camaro models deserve recognition too. This four-seat rear-wheel-drive model comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can upgrade to a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6, generating 335 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque.

2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Both engines work with either a six-speed TREMEC manual gearbox or to an 8-speed automatic transmission. When equipped with the automatic, the model with the standard engine makes an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway (20/30 mpg with the manual). Choose the V6 and the fuel economy is 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway (16/27 mpg with the automatic).

The Camaro SS raises the power quotient significantly with its 6.2-liter V8 engine making 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. Chevy pairs this engine with either the manual gearbox or to a 10-speed automatic transmission. My test model came with the automatic and although I prefer the manual, it serves this model well. Your fuel economy here is 16 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway (16/24 mpg with the manual).

Certainly, Chevrolet could have left well enough alone and stopped there. But they didn’t. And that’s a good thing. Camaro shoppers can upgrade to a supercharged version of the V8 (with the ZL1) and keep the same transmission pairings. As a result, a significant power boost is achieved, enabling this engine to bang out 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. On the negative side, fuel economy takes a hit as it falls to 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway (13/21 mpg with the automatic). Furthermore, a federal gas guzzler tax kicks in and it’ll lighten your wallet by $1,700.

Here are the highlights of the 2019 Camaro SS:

1. New exterior styling touches are apparent. Camaro fans will notice the changes at once. Up front, the SS has a new fascia marked by an updated grille, dual-element headlamps, and LED lighting. The extractor-style hood is a fresh design too. From the rear, the fascia features sculpted LED tail lamps with dark-tinted neutral-density (transparent) lenses. As for the wheels, you’ll find a new 20-inch design.

2. The ZL1’s automatic transmission is here. Most Camaro SS enthusiasts love the 6-speed manual gearbox, a signature performance piece in any muscle car. That said, a manual isn’t for everyone and that’s where an automatic transmission with paddle shifters comes in. For 2019, the SS gains a 10-speed automatic transmission, courtesy of the ZL1 trim, which already had this unit. The two extra gears suit this sports car just fine. We’ll explore this point when we drill down on our driving impressions.

3. You can take it to the track. Choose the available SS 1LE Track Performance Package ($7,000) and you’ll cut corners with precision. The package includes Satin Black design elements — front splitter, hood wrap, and rear blade spoiler. You’ll also find 20-inch Satin Graphite forged aluminum wheels wrapped within Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar tires. A performance-tuned suspension, magnetic ride control, an electronic limited-slip differential, Brembo front and rear performance antilock brakes, and dual-mode exhaust are included. Inside, front Recaro bucket seats, sueded steering wheel and shift knob cover, and a head-up display round-out this package.

4. You’ll find standard driver-assist features on the 2SS. You have to opt for the Camaro 2SS to enjoy certain safety features not offered with the 1SS. These include rear park assist, rear cross-traffic alert, side blind zone alert with lane change alert and forward collision alert (coupe only). All models have a rear-vision camera; the 2SS has a rear camera mirror.

Driving Impressions: 2019 Camaro SS

There are cars and then there are driver’s cars. The Camaro fits the latter category sublimely, especially in SS guise and above. This is no slap against the turbo and V6 models, rather it is a strong affirmation of what Chevrolet brings to the table with its sports coupe.

And the table is set with a performance coupe that’s second to none.

My test model had the standard V8 engine paired with the automatic transmission. I could have groused, given that the smooth-shifting manual wasn’t presented. But its omission gave me the opportunity to evaluate the new powertrain pairing. In fact, the current transmission acquitted itself beautifully.

2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS

On ignition, the engine rumbled and sent out a moderate bellow through its two exhaust tips. Move through the drive modes (tour, sport, and track) and the clamor increases. The same can be said for the weight of the steering wheel and the suspension system — the Camaro SS simply becomes a more potent machine with its advanced settings selected.

Move away from a dead stop and the SS immediately shows what it’s made of. The engine responds with copious amounts of power and keeps delivering as it quickly moves the Camaro forward.

At wide-open throttle, the burly V8 roars and sends this sports coupe rocketing down the road. On the straightaway, the SS is right at home. On twisty back roads, it is nimble and compliant. The steering wheel felt fantastic in my hands— it is as accurate as it is agile.

The Camaro dives into corners with confidence and leaves them with ease. Its big tires, rapidly adjusting suspension system, and limited-slip differential join forces to keep this vehicle planted.

There are also a few fun features of note with this Camaro. For instance, the lift-foot gear-hold mode. Here, if you’re navigation twist roads, simply tap the gas pedal and the transmission stays in gear. The transmission will immediately drop to third gear and hold it while taking your tight turn. It’ll upshift just as you finish your final corner and head straight down the road with the full force of the engine powered up. The other fun feature is launch control and line lock. Here, you get to optimize your 0-60 mph time, which should come in around four seconds.

Auto Trends Recommends

If performance is high on your list, then the SS is where you’ll begin your Camaro search. The good news is that 1SS coupe begins at $37,995; the convertible clocks in at $43,995. The packages are relatively light on the 1SS, but much more thorough beginning with the 2SS.

Consider the supercharged V8 and your starting price comes in at $64,695 for the coupe and $70,695 for the convertible. Both are ZL1 models, which means you get everything from the SS trims and add in every available embellishment.

We recommend the 2SS trim as it brings in such features as illuminated kick plates, heated and ventilated leather-trimmed front seats with power control, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, dual-zone climate control, a Bose audio package, and driver-assist technologies. Even without a single upgrade, your price is $42,995. Consider a few performance and appearance upgrades and your final price should come in around $45,000.

In all, the 2019 Camaro remains an excellent representation of what we want in a modern muscle car, even a sports car. Its aggressive looks, the variety of powertrain choices, sports cockpit, and advanced technologies match up well in a small, but a highly competitive segment.
