About the 2021 Lordstown Endurance

An electric truck that’s not from Rivian or Tesla.



Pickup trucks remain a lucrative market for key manufacturers, whose profits drive these businesses and allow them to invest in other technologies, including vehicle electrification. GM and Ford are taking some of the profits culled from the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150 and are plowing them into EV models that also include electric trucks.

Two EV makers will soon field their electric trucks when Rivian and Tesla offer models as early as 2021. But these four companies aren’t the only manufacturers looking at their EV utility options. A company called Lordstown Motors Corp., based in Ohio, will soon field an Endurance pickup truck. Built at a facility once owned by GM, the Lordstown group is working diligently to bring its truck to market, perhaps beating Tesla to it.

Lordstown Endurance

The 2021 Lordstown Endurance is built on a simple platform featuring four in-wheel hub motors with integrated software managing the same. Instead of using thousands of moving parts as is typical in gas- and diesel-powered vehicles, the four motors are the only moving parts in this EV truck’s chassis. Theoretically, with very few moving parts, this truck should stand the test of time, hence its “Endurance” nameplate.

Lordstown says its hub motor system is more efficient than the EV systems coming from other manufacturers as energy output goes immediately to each wheel. Other EV systems are more complex as they include at least one electric motor and gearbox which then transmits power to the wheels. With this four-wheel-drive Endurance, the wheels along with the integrated software work independently while also monitoring battery pack performance. The company says the pickup truck earns the equivalent of 75 MPGe.

Scant Details

The first public debut of the Endurance took place on June 25, 2020, at the factory with U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence among the dignitaries present. That news conference was scarce on tech details, although the company says the truck makes 600 horsepower and has a tow rating of up to 6,000 pounds. That towing capacity is thousands of pounds less than what Ford and Tesla are touting for their trucks and likely will shut out some buyers.



The Endurance is a crew cab model (four large doors) with room for five. According to “The Drive,” when it comes to charging, “a 7.0-kW onboard charger, a full recharge will take 10 hours using a 240-volt Level 2 AC power source. It’s unclear what charging times will look like with DC fast-charging sources.” Lordstown says the truck will supply a 260-mile range. Other details, including payload, available trims, and interior details are not yet known.

Fleet Buyers First

Like other manufacturers, Lordstown is taking “pre-orders” or early non-binding orders for its truck. Priced from $52,500, the truck should qualify purchasers with a $7,500 federal tax credit, effectively lowering their cost to $45,000, plus taxes, tags, other fees, and upgrades. Unlike the other manufacturers, Lordstown has fleet buyers in mind and is requiring them to purchase at least five trucks with a $1,000 refundable deposit each. The company says it has contracted with the disaster relief firm ServPro to take 1,200 trucks from the onset.

Delivery may be staggered with buyers having the option of receiving their trucks over two years. Once those orders are taken, individual commercial and consumer buyers will likely get their chance to purchase one. The company is looking to begin building its truck in Summer 2021 with deliveries starting soon thereafter. The Lordstown facility has an annual build capacity of 600,000 units and the company is intent on eventually reaching maximum output.

Looking Ahead

We’re not sure how strong Lordstown’s financial backing is. The manufacturing plant is on loan from GM who lent the company money to lease the facility. The company was founded by Steven Burns whose previous business Workhorse Group built battery-electric powertrains for UPS trucks.

On the other hand, Rivian has raised more than $5 billion and counts Amazon and the Ford Motor Company among its key investors. Tesla itself is a financial powerhouse with its stock valued higher than any other manufacturer. In any case, Lordstown’s success is far from guaranteed and the company will have to flawlessly execute production or risk getting run over by far stronger competition.

Second Look: 2020 Nissan Sentra

On occasion, manufacturers will supply a specially trimmed model, then follow a few months later with a different trim. Two or more shares of the same product with media folk is a way for the automakers to tout a particular model and its many variations.

That’s exactly what happened this month when a 2020 Sentra SR arrived, just three months after a Sentra SV passed through our test fleet. Nissan, for its part, had every reason to want to place this compact sedan front and center as it is all-new for 2020 and the most stylish Sentra yet. Indeed, as one passer by noted when spotting the car, he recognized it was a 2020 version, mentioning that if it didn’t have a Sentra badge, it might easily be mistaken for the Altima, which is Nissan’s midsize model.

And what this person noted was absolutely true: from the gaping V-motion grille to its distinct body sculpting and pronounced character lines, the Sentra takes the Altima’s design and brings it down to this smaller model. Moreover, the look is so uncanningly similar to the Altima that the Sentra SR features the same “floating roof” design found in the larger sedan. In effect, it makes for an unusual feature for this once-staid class.

Highlights of the 2020 Nissan Sentra SR

You can read our full review of the Sentra SV here. Instead of rehashing everything in this article, we’ll look at the many highlights and distinctions of the SV, which is the top of three Sentra trims.

Modern interior. Today’s compact models are not only much more stylish on the outside, but they’re simply better on the inside. Nissan makes the SR’s cabin seem uncommonly nice with ample soft-touch surfaces, brightwork trim, and moderate amounts of plastic. The dashboard shows styling verve as it lowers and converges with the center stack. The display panel sits on the lower part of the dash just above the console. We like that Nissan chose three big circular vents and placed them in a row beneath the display. The vents are controlled individually by knobs, just as you see in some luxury cars. We found the front seats comfortable and supportive. There is ample storage space in each door pocket. The rear seat is also comfortable, but tall passengers will find the headroom fairly limiting. The legroom too is small, but two average-sized adults can sit back there. Can you fit a third individual? Yes, but only to compromised hip space – do this only for short trips.

The premium package delivers. Both the SV and SR trims offer a premium package, with the latter supplying the most comprehensive (but slightly less costly) upgrade. In the SV, the package costs $2,460 and adds such amenities as upgraded LED lights, a power moonroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, quilted leather seats, heated front seats, and power-controlled front seats. For $2,170, the SR package builds on the SV’s upgrades, adding such features as an around-view monitor, a heated steering wheel, imitation leather sport seats with contrast orange stitching, and an 8-speaker Bose audio system.

Lots of standard tech. Available upgrades too. The 2020 Sentra comes with a 7-inch touch-screen display. Bluetooth, one USB port, and Siri Eyes Free are also standard. Move up to the SV trim and Nissan includes an 8-inch touch-screen display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, satellite radio, and two additional USB ports. The base model has a four-speaker audio system, while the other two trims come with a 6-speaker system.

Safety isn’t an afterthought. We applaud manufacturers such as Nissan for including many driver-assist tech features as standard equipment. The 2020 Sentra underscores these efforts with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking alert, and automatic rear braking. Adaptive cruise control shows up on the SV and the surround-view monitor is included with the SR’s package as mentioned.

Roomy cargo space. We’ve seen trunks in larger models that are quite frankly too small. Not so with the Nissan Sentra as this one measures 14.3 cubic feet. That’s on par with some midsize models and is a bonus for anyone needing enough luggage space for a family of four for one week. But it gets better than that: the rear split-folding seat extends the storage compartment, allowing for larger items. If it is just the two of you traveling, the expanded storage space will hold far more room than you may need.

A more powerful powertrain. Take one four-cylinder engine and pair it with a continuously variable transmission, and you have the makings of an efficient powertrain. That’s exactly Nissan’s modus operandi when it comes to the vast majority of its small models. For 2020, Nissan upgraded the powertrain to enhance its performance without diminishing efficiency. This one comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 149 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque. That’s a strong improvement over the 124 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque of the previous model. Further, its fuel economy improves slightly from a combined 32 mpg city/highway to 33 mpg. We like that the transmission does a laudable job of mimicking shift points without causing the engine to drone needlessly as is a common experience with some CVTs.




Fun to drive. Not only does the powertrain supply more grunt, but the drivability factor has been enhanced measurably this year. The electric steering system is one of the better ones out there, especially for this class as it supplies some resistance while making turns. We’ve driven cars with minimal feedback. This isn’t one of those. Instead, as you shift the wheel you’ll feel some heft, which increases driver engagement. The independent rear suspension is a bonus – no, you won’t take this sedan to the track, but you’ll certainly notice that it handles twisty roads with poise and pulls out of corners with ease.

Nissan Sentra SR: Parting Thoughts

Perhaps the most significant fact about the SR is its sporty demeanor, amplified by upgraded LED lights, including fog lights. The dark chrome surrounding the grille and on top of the side mirrors contribute to this vibe as do the side sill extensions, rear spoiler, and chrome exhaust finisher. These embellishments bring the sporty look, although if you want the performance chops, you’ll have to look elsewhere.


A sizable trunk and a split fold-down rear seat gives the Sentra ample storage space.

Fun Facts About The Porsche GT2 RS

The Porsche GT2 RS, just like its sports car cousins, is a car anyone would love to take for a spin. It is the most powerful 911 version ever produced, benefitting from an enhanced flat-six engine and a track-focused, rear-drive chassis. It’s a winning combination, one that guarantees efficient performance.

Porsche Beauty

The first thing of note is its appearance: it’s a beautiful car. No doubt that it is a 911, but the GT2 RS’ bodywork is more dramatic than the usual 911s. The body is aerodynamic and fitted in the rear with fender cooler ducts, NACA ducts and a park-bench rear wing that makes the car easier to handle.

This rear wing is an important part of the car’s design because it helps the driver control the 700 horsepower and rear-wheel drive vehicle effectively. When combined with the rear diffuser, the rear wing is capable of generating about 900 pounds of downforce. That’s quite a lot for a sports car.

Another notable thing about this car is its sound. A Porsche 911 isn’t the same without a tough sound to match its performance. This one doesn’t disappoint with its aural excitement and appeal, endearing many people to fall in love with this beautiful machine. The engineers examined generations of Porsche cars to get the right sound, finding the proper balance. Fans of the iconic 935 would want a GT2 RS.

The lightweight features of the car stand out from those of a regular car, are state-of-the-art, and better than what you’d find in many places. This exotic car is designed with a carbon rear wing, carbon hood, and carbon fender, a magnesium roof, and lighter glass. These lightweight features contribute to its top speed (est. 211 mph) and optimized engine performance. It does 0-60 mph in just 2.6 seconds and hits the quarter-mile in a blistering 10.3 seconds.

Engineering Marvel

The Porsche GT2 RS features a lot of engineering greatness and expertise that is built-in.

Theoretically, the car was designed to be awesome but it still has to drive well on a track. This luxurious vehicle offers you lots of power and you’ll find responsive steering and an impressive throttle. The Porsche deserves a transmission box that is capable of handling raw power and it does so with a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch box. There’s no need for a manual gearbox with this car.

The power and torque generated by this vehicle’s powerful engine routes to the rear wheels by the gearbox. The tires are staggered: 245/35R20 up front and 305/30R20 on the rear axle.

The best part of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS is its engine, often described as “brutal,” with mind-blowing performance numbers. The car has a maximum power output of 700 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque which is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine, bettering the heralded Turbo S. The extra power is generated from larger turbochargers, a new carbon fiber air inlet, and a free-flowing exhaust system.

Water Spray System

All the extra power generated by the turbochargers are cooled by a water spray system that
impacts the intercooler and helps reduce engine temperature. You’ll find radiators and oil coolers behind the front intakes to cool the engine and drivetrain. The vents are made from carbon fiber and are more prominent than those on the Turbo S. They direct air to the intercoolers while the NACA ducts send air to the front brakes.

Porsche has committed a lot of work to bolster the chassis with a stability system in place to help manage power.

Exquisite Interior

The interior quality matches the exterior and doesn’t disappoint. The Porsche 911 GT2 RS features Red Alcantara material on the steering wheel and roof. As expected, you’ll find the standard Porsche racing bucket seat design in bright fabric trim. The rest of the interior comprises carbon fiber trim pieces and a GT trademark fabric door.

The GT2 RS has all the top features you’d expect for one costly nearly $300,000, but is worth the price to the diehard enthusiast with deep pockets.

Traffic School Programs for Driving Record Point Reduction

If you’re pulled over, know your rights.

You have just been handed a ticket, your third traffic violation of the year. One more ticket and your license will be revoked, never mind the increased insurance premiums and fines that will follow immediately. Careful driving will help you avoid future tickets and the completion of a traffic school course can remove some points from your driving record. Not all driving courses qualify, therefore do your research before investing your time and money in a program.

State Jurisdiction

Each state, territory, and district has complete jurisdiction over its drivers by issuing licenses, vehicle registrations, and tags to qualified individuals.

Your state’s department of motor vehicles assigns points for various moving violations, therefore an accumulation of points can cost you your license. Your driving information is also available to insurance companies with your premiums adjusted accordingly.

State-Approved Programs

Many states oversee programs that allow drivers to take defensive driving and refresher courses to improve their driving skills. These courses are typically available through private companies or corporations, businesses that are known as “course sponsors” in the state of New York.

New York’s Point & Insurance Reduction Program removes four points for drivers that successfully complete an approved program. Contact your state’s DMV for qualifying program information and point reduction guidelines.

Example Courses

Qualifying courses last at least 320 minutes in New York. In North Carolina, driving clinics last for four hours and are completed in one session. In Nevada, one-day traffic programs are taken online, courses that may take up to five hours to complete.

Approved programs in each state review driving knowledge and are geared toward improving driving skills.

State DMV Notification

Once you successfully complete and pass a driving course, the approved driving school forwards that information to your state. Your state determines how many points are removed and how soon those points come off of your driving record.

In New York, it can take up to 10 weeks to remove your points. In Idaho, drivers are issued a certificate of completion and must send their certificate to Boise for handling and the subsequent reduction of three points from their driving record. In California, the driving school notifies the state when a student has successfully passed its course.

Points, Fines, and Fees

The completion of a driver education program may reduce your points, but it may not reduce your fine. Moreover, you can expect to pay a fee for your class and you may also be charged a separate fee for your certificate.

To reinstate your license, your DMV will also charge a fee. States restrict how often drivers can take a traffic school course and how many points may be removed within a certain amount of time. In New York, drivers can lose up to seven points over five years, in Idaho drivers can have up to three points removed annually.

Reducing the number of points on your driving record may preserve your driver’s license. If your license is revoked, the successful completion of traffic school may restore your privileges, but fines, court costs, and lawyer fees will remain.

Kia Sets K5 to Replace Optima

The Kia Optima is a midsize sedan and has earned its place in a crowded, albeit shrinking segment. Launched in 2001, the Optima was Kia’s first midsize sedan for the U.S. market. Since then, Kia has rolled out larger models, including the Cadenza and K900 sedans, but the Optima is the volume seller of the three.

We won’t see a 2021 Optima as Kia has decided after four generations to rename this vehicle the K5, what it’s called in other markets, including Korea. The all-new model shares much with the Hyundai Sonata, its corporate stablemate, and will thus bring forth several of the same engineering attributes while maintaining its distinct shape and design embellishments.

2021 Kia K5 Highlights

Longer, wider, and lower than the Optima. Today’s midsize sedans are yesterday’s full-size models. Or at least they’re very close in dimensions. The new K5 sits on a 112.2-inch wheelbase (+1.8 inch) and is 193.1 inches long (+2 inches). It is also 73.2 inches wide (+1.0 inch) and sits 0.8 inches lower to the ground than the Optima. Kia says the suspension geometry is “optimized for sporty handling, responsiveness and stability,” and features an increased tensile strength.

Unique exterior styling. The new K5 borrows elements popular in the Kia Stinger and also found in the Cadenza. The GT-Line and GT trim models feature a shark skin-inspired mesh design on front grille and dual chrome exhaust tip garnish, “heart-beat” daytime running lights and taillights with available LED “dashes” spanning the breadth of the rear deck lid, gloss black applique, and newly designed 16-, 18-, or 19-inch alloy wheels. Incidentally, the 18- and 19-inch wheels are shod within Pirelli P-Zero tires.

Special interior touches. All K5 trims feature an aircraft-type shift knob, a blend of premium and sporty upholstery options including red imitation leather seating, satin chrome metallic and wood-like finishes on the dashboard and door panels, and a panoramic sunroof, depending on the trim.

Two turbocharged engine choices. Four out of the five K5 trims will offer a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The performance numbers are in line with what you’d expect in this segment, at least with a base model. This engine works with standard front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. But if that’s not enough, a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque is what drives the top GT trim. The standard engine works with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the optional engine is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

All-wheel drive is now optional. Unlike the Sonata, the new K5 will offer available all-wheel drive. This is keeping with a trend we’ve seen in recent years where the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry now have optional all-wheel drive. All three follow on the heels of the Subaru Legacy, the only model in the segment with standard all-wheel drive. Previously, both the Chrysler 200 and the Ford Fusion offered all-wheel drive, but both models have since been discontinued.

There are four standard drive modes: normal, smart, sport, and custom with the GT Line receiving a fifth: sport+. Adjusting the modes impacts drivability, including engine, transmission, and steering. In models equipped with all-wheel drive, the mapping extends to that feature as well and brings in a snow mode.

Upgraded tech features. Kia says the K5 will have an 8- or 10.25-inch high-resolution color touchscreen along with split-screen functionality and available satellite radio. The navigation system is server-based with real-time traffic information. As for Bluetooth, two phones can connect simultaneously. The usual UVO telematics suite returns and brings with it further customization to allow each driver to set his/her settings. The Bose audio system with 12 available speakers is something we’d expect in a luxury car. A first for Kia is wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility – no need for a cord as the connection is accomplished seamlessly.

The “Drive Wise” suite of safety features. All 2021 K5 models come with standard forward collision warning, forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane-following assist, and driver attention warning. The list of upgrades includes blind-spot collision avoidance, forward collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic avoidance assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Kia K5 Pricing, Availability

Kia will price the 2021 K5 from $23,490 plus a $965 destination charge. Available in five trims, the top-of-the-line GT costs $30,490. Where available, all-wheel drive adds $2,100 to the LXS and $3,700 to the GT, along with other features.

In all, we think the new K5 will aggressively carve a niche for itself in the segment. Its arrival follows the demise of the Buick LaCrosse, which is perhaps the model Kia had in mind when designing this premium midsize four-door sedan.

The K5 is built in West Point, Georgia, alongside the Telluride SUV. It will arrive in U.S. showrooms this fall.

On the Prowl With a 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody

The Dodge Charger stands alone among mainstream sedans. Its full-size body style is increasingly uncommon and its traditional rear-wheel-drive platform makes it unique in this segment, sharing its footprint with the Chrysler 300, while also counting a Dodge Challenger coupe derivative.

We recently had the opportunity to drive the most potent version of the 2020 Charger when an SRT Hellcat Widebody model was dropped off for a week’s worth of fun. To that end, we’re dispensing with our usual model review to drill down on this most impressive of Charger models.

Hellcat Musings

Dodge’s use of the Hellcat name originated in 2015 when it released a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine for both the Charger and Challenger. In 2018, the Jeep Grand Cherokee got its version, which was named the Trackhawk. That same year Dodge made a crate engine (hellcrate) available to anyone wanting this engine to upgrade their ride. Beginning in 2021, we’ll see a Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat, what’s likely to become the fastest SUV in the world.

The Hellcat name comes from the Grumman F6F Hellcat, which was the naval carrier-based fighter aircraft introduced in 1943 and used widely in the Pacific theater. Great Britain also received more than 1,000 units and these were widely used until the end of World War II.


The Charger features a classic coke bottle layout. This one is amplified with a bright patina, widebody trim and wheels, and huge Brembo brake covers in red.

History of the modern Dodge Charger. Car fans know that the original Charger name was affixed to a sport coupe in the 1960s and 1970s. What they prefer to ignore is that this name was later used on a subcompact front-wheel-drive model for six years in the 1980s. While the switch to four doors angered some when the current model rolled out in 2005, various performance versions have consoled the faithful. Besides, with the Challenger coupe’s arrival in 2008, happiness followed. This writer has gotten over his disappointment that the Magnum wagon disappeared in 2008 after an all-too-brief four-year run.

Origin of the current Charger. Credit DaimlerChrysler with supplying us with the Magnum, Charger, 300, and Challenger. DaimlerChrysler was the name of the entity founded in 1998 that brought Mercedes-Benz and the Chrysler Corporation brands under one name. The LX platform underpinning these models comes from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class platform of the 1990s, but the American version was designed stateside. Chrysler tapped the Mercedes parts bin for its five-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, rear differential, and the multi-link rear suspension. In 2011, four years after separating from Daimler, Chrysler rolled out an updated platform and dubbed it LD (the Challenger sits on an LA variant). The three remaining models are based on the 2011 update.

What’s a widebody? In recent years, we’ve seen Dodge roll out Widebody versions of its Challenger and Charger. No, Dodge did not broaden vehicle width, but they did add bodywork such as chunky wheel lips to give these models an even more formidable presence. The Widebody models have improved tire and suspension packages, including modified springs, sway bars, and shocks. The Bilstein three-mode adaptive damping system is especially noteworthy here.




Design attributes. Besides the various “widebody” exterior enhancements, the Hellcat benefits from several interior features and upgrades. We point out the front seats which are wide, gently bolstered, and all-day comfortable. In other words, they’re much more livable than the sport seats you find in many other models. In fact, I believe if you are a larger individual – taller and a bit wider, you’ll find these seats quite pleasing. Few cars can deliver such and that’s why pickup trucks are popular for bigger people. Move beyond the base model and you’ll find an ample amount of soft-touch materials. We liked the Hellcat’s quilted leather seats with the SRT debossing. It’s a fetching look without being overwrought. The center stack is cleanly ordered with an 8.4-inch touch-screen display (7 inches in base trims) with knobs and switches underneath to control audio and climate functions. The fat transmission shifter seems entirely appropriate for this model as do the metal-wrapped pedals.

Big on safety features; old design. The Charger’s aged design doesn’t help it with crash test scores, although it still earns high marks from the NHTSA, while the IIHS is less forgiving. The institute’s small front overlap testing typically favors modern models. With the Charger, it scored marginally. That said, the Charger does come with several features that go beyond the requisite suite of airbags and a rearview monitor. All models come with rear parking sensors. You have to move up through the trim ranks to find such features as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and blind-spot monitoring. They’re available and are certainly worth considering.

Four engine choices. Most manufacturers offer one or two engines for each model and call it a day. Not so with the 2020 Charger as there are four choices available. Beginning with a 3.6-liter V6 and extending to 5.7- and 6.4-liter V8 engines, there’s a naturally aspirated powerplant for varying levels of performance and efficiency available. The 6.2-liter V8 exclusive to the Hellcat is the only boosted engine of this cohort. All four engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Enhanced Hellcat performance. When it comes to performance, all eyes are on the Hellcat. The 2020 Charger features the standard amount of Hellcat power, specifically 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. That’s an incredible amount of power available and dwarfs the 300 horsepower delivered by the V6 and the 485 horsepower derived from its largest engine, the 6.4-liter V8. How fast is this most powerful of all Chargers? We’ve seen 0-60 mph times of 3.6 seconds from published sources. Yes, that likely makes the Charger the fastest production sedan in the world.

Hold on. Tightly. There is nothing subtle about the Hellcat’s performance. From the moment the ignition is engaged, the performance exhaust system percolates. I had a few people remark that the Charger is “very loud.” That’s what it is supposed to be – you’ll hear it coming well before it arrives. Step-off acceleration is excellent, but it is when you “floor it” that the Hellcat’s awesomeness comes to bear. And this is where maximum attention and control is required – the rear wheels quite easily will give out from underneath this burly sedan, sending the SRT Hellcat into a spin. This model is ideal for the straightaway, but extra caution is required on twisty roads and when entering and leaving corners. Its steering is weighty with direct handling. The Charger tracks well, but a measured increase in performance should result in a corresponding increase in personal attentiveness. We like the Hellcat’s around-town moan as well as its banshee-like scream when pressed into action.

More power for 2021. If 707 horsepower isn’t enough for you, then know that it’ll be bumped up to 717 horsepower for 2021. But the performance enhancement doesn’t stop there. We’ll also see a Hellcat Redeye variant roll out, this one based on the Challenger of the same name. Here, Dodge upgrades the standard 2.4 IHI supercharger to 2.7 liters. Moreover, boost increases from 11.6 PSI to 14.5 PSI, while the redline moves up from 6,200 to 6,500. The Redeye also benefits from stronger rods and pistons, an enhanced oil capability, and a pair of dual-stage oil pumps (up from the current one). Other upgrades include an all-new performance hood, mail-slot grille, and a cold-air intake fixed near the wheel liner. In all, the top-shelf Hellcat bakes 797 horsepower and 707 pound-feet of torque.

Looking ahead. We know what 2021 holds for the Charger, including the Hellcat, but what about the long term? You may know that Fiat Chrysler and France’s PSA Groupe are planning to merge and will form a new company called Stellantis. If the merger passes regulatory scrutiny (and that’s never a guarantee), the new company should emerge in the first half of 2021. We don’t know what that will mean for the Dodge brand, but we expect it will survive. Likely, the brand will continue in its present form for the short term, but new models based on PSA architecture seems likely. This could also mean the first plug-in Charger hybrid as well as other engine choices. But as long as demand remains for performance models, the Charger, Challenger, and Durango should remain.

Your Cost

Choose a 2020 Charger SRT Hellcat and you’ll pay handsomely to own one. Indeed with the $2,100 gas guzzler tax and $1,495 destination charge, your cost is $73,950. Options such as a Carbon/Suede interior, navigation, and Alcantara seats add thousands of dollars. With special paint and wheels, you’re looking at $80,000 before discounts kick in.

Genesis G70: Affordable, Luxury Sedan

Genesis is now firmly established as a luxury marque, with three sedans to choose from. This fall, its first SUV arrives, giving the brand the volume vehicle it needs. Within a few more years, the Genesis lineup should number six distinct models, including an electric vehicle.

We recently drove the G70, the smallest of the three sedans and the one we see as probably the strongest threat to established European players such as the BMW 4 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.


2020 Genesis G70 Review


The 2020 Genesis G70 starts at $35,450, plus a $995 freight charge. It comes with standard rear-wheel drive and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Models equipped with the available turbocharged V6 engine and all-wheel drive cost $46,650. For 2019, one year after its introduction, the G70 is unchanged except for equipment shuffling.

Exterior

Genesis is finding its way in the luxury sphere just fine, thank you very much. There is a connection between all three sedans, but each one utilizes unique grilles and LED accent lighting touches. Still, the overall look is stately, with sporty highlights quickly evident.

Our test 3.3T supplied the best blend of luxury and sportiness with its elegant lighting, long wheelbase, short overhangs, boomerang side vent trim, and red Brembo brake calipers that punctuate the 19-inch sport wheels set within summer tires. Otherwise, the standard features include 18-inch wheels, twin-tipped exhaust tips, heated side mirrors, and an automatic opening trunk.



Interior

It is a stretch to say the G70 seats five people, but it is common to offer seatbelts for a handful of passengers in this class. Nevertheless, the G70 offers excellent seating for two with supportive and comfortable seats up front and a bench seat in the rear. Rear legroom is very tight, especially when the front seats are pushed back. Ideally, those seats will hold two youngsters – if you need room for four or five adults, the G80 is the far better choice.

One thing we’re thankful is that the bolstering for the G70 isn’t overwrought – it is just right. On the sport trim the driver’s seat features power side bolsters, which allows for the customization you want. That’s preferable over seats with hard, inflexible bolsters (here’s looking at you Recaro) that offer a take it or leave it proposition.

Opt for the available Prestige package and the quilted leather seats will impress. The red contrast stitching on the black leather is especially fetching. The metal-covered pedals add sportiness. Overall, the interior is inviting, sporty, and sophisticated. We like that Genesis did important things such as tilting the instruments panel and center stack toward the driver. It renders a small cockpit vibe and that’s something we like.



Safety

The 2020 G70 comes with a decent roster of driver-assist safety features. The standard features include high beam assist, forward collision avoidance assistance with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, and smart cruise control with full stop and go.

Two available features worth considering are the surround-view monitor and the heads-up display. The first one utilizes four cameras to expand the driver’s viewpoint significantly while also rendering a bird’s eyes view for ease of parking. The second one simply takes the important driver information, including speed, navigation, and safety alerts, and projects that into a full-color display on the windshield.

Technology

We’re impressed with the tech offerings accompanying the 2020 G70. For starters, it comes with a 6-speaker audio system with satellite radio and HD Radio, an 8-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, and two USB ports. The standard features should satisfy the majority of shoppers.

That said, the upgrades are noteworthy and include a 15-speaker Lexicon audio system, a wireless charging pad, and navigation. The only missing ingredient is a 110-volt power outlet.



Performance

Genesis supplies two engine choices with the 2020 G70, beginning with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that develops 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The second choice is a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. Both work with an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and rev-matching.

Of special note is that the transmission is a “shift-by-wire” arrangement. That means there are no mechanical parts connecting the transmission to the wheels. Instead, the computer signals each shift point.

What about a manual transmission? Is one offered? Happily, that answer is yes, although it is only offered with the base engine and represents a $3,500 add on. This feature, though, should gladden the heart of enthusiasts as it also includes a limited-slip differential. We’re happy it is still offered as key competitors, including BMW and Mercedes-Benz, no longer offer three-pedal fun.

Upgrading to the V6 brings in a few performance extras, including a sport-tuned suspension, a Brembo performance braking system, and a limited-slip differential. Our rear-wheel-drive tester came with the V6 and its special performance benefits.

The G70 V6 supplies excellent step-off acceleration and ample passing power. The twin-turbo arrangement means quick spooling with inconsequential lagtime. This was the second time in as many years we’ve driven a G70 with the engine upgrade and continue to enjoy all its advantages, including its sub-5-second 0-60 mph time.

We found the steering feedback precise, with improvements realized through its various drive modes. This sedan manages very well and strikes a near-perfect balance between ride and handling. You’ll attack corners with ease and pull out with confidence. The beefy Brembo brakes bring this sedan to a quick stop.

We also realized the G70 matches the BMW 3/4 Series in every driving department – it is tossable, fun to drive, and fast. We doubt the standard engine is a slouch. That it still offers a manual gearbox option is reason to seriously consider that particular powertrain.



Competitive Set

The entry-level sedan market remains a strong one with nearly every player represented. Beyond the BMW 4 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, this class offers the Cadillac CT4, Jaguar XE, Volvo S60, Audi A4, Lincoln MKZ, Lexus IS, Infiniti Q50, and the Acura ILX. The G70 shares its mechanical underpinnings with the Kia Stinger, but its in-house competitor isn’t a luxury model.


Our Recommendation


We could tell you to get the standard model with rear-wheel drive (and opt for the manual gearbox if so inclined) and call it a day. That said, it’s kind of hard to overlook the 3.3T and all the power it brings to bear.

To make things easier on you, choose the standard model if a car such as the BMW 330i is on your list. Otherwise, if you’re considering a BMW M4 coupe or convertible (sorry, there is no M3 sedan), then the 3.3T makes sense.

Honda Tosses Three Models

The car model carnage continues.


The Honda Civic Coupe is on its way out.

Automotive manufacturers have been dropping car models left and right as consumers continue to show a preference for utility vehicles and trucks. Through 2020, the American Honda Motor Co, Inc., has largely escaped the carnage, but that’s about to end. Indeed, there are three car models slated for cancellation, including one nameplate that will soon be gone altogether. Automotive News [subscription required] broke this story last Friday.

Honda Shuffles Its Product Line

The first model slated for cancellation is the Fit, Honda’s subcompact and smallest model. Introduced in 2007 and slotted beneath the Civic, the Fit recaptured much of the size and thriftiness of the original Civic. This four-door hatchback has served the brand well and has also undergone several updates. An all-new Fit is already in place in markets across the world, but the United States will not get one. Consequently, Fit production in Mexico will end. Honda will now expand production of its tiniest crossover, the HR-V.

Honda’s first car model for the U.S. market was the Civic, launched in 1973. It was small, fuel-efficient, and reliable, traits that soon made it one of America’s most popular cars. The Civic line has grown and changed body styles since, with a coupe, sedan, and hatchback comprising its model line. This three-prong approach has worked well for Honda in a segment where few competitors offer anything besides a sedan. Unfortunately, the coupe won’t see the 2021 model year, as Honda says it will stay with the sedan and hatchback. However, there is good news: an all-new Civic is on the way next year.

Honda’s largest car model and a strong volume driver like the Civic is its midsize Accord sedan. This vehicle is stylish, roomy, and loaded with tech features. Arguably, it is the best model in its segment. It is also one of the few cars still offering a manual transmission, as its Sport model delivered one with a choice of 1.5- and 2.0-liter engines. That six-speed manual, though, had a very tiny take rate. As such, it also won’t see the 2021 model year. In effect, Honda shuts the door on midsize models with manual gearboxes, following the Toyota Camry and Mazda6 which did so several years back.

Honda Looks Ahead

By adjusting its product line, Honda follows the vast majority of other manufacturers by cutting car models. But there are some exceptions as Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia hold the line.

As a matter of fact, with the Fit gone, the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Versa, Hyundai Accent, and Kia Rio will have one less competitor to battle. The Ford Fiesta is already gone, while the Chevrolet Sonic is also in its final year. Some manufacturers, such as Fiat Chrysler don’t offer a subcompact, although the Fiat 500 is small enough to occupy the “micro” segment.

Just as Honda cancels some models, it is doubling down on others. For instance, beginning in 2021, the Honda Pilot features a 9-speed automatic transmission across the entire trim line. Gone is the base six-speed automatic that seemed out of place.

Civic Type R Limited Edition

We’ll soon see the Civic Type R Limited Edition, a performance model limited to just 600 models. Offered exclusively in a Phoenix Yellow patina with gloss-black accents, this hot Honda features 20-inch BBS forged-aluminum wheels set within Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Tires, a Honda LogR Datalogger System, and recalibrated steering for enhanced control and improved feedback.

What’s significant about the latest Type R is that it is 46 pounds lighter, which should help it win back the Nürburgring Nordschleife laurels it lost to the Renault Megane RS Trophy-R in 2019 for the fastest time of any front-wheel-drive model in the world. The revised Honda will continue with its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which carries a 306 horsepower and 295 pound-foot of torque rating. Power travels to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.

Jeep Trolls Ford With V8 Wrangler Concept

An enhanced Wrangler may be on the way.


This Jeep Wrangler Concept brings V8 potential to the line.

The big news this week was the Ford Bronco family reveal, representing perhaps one of the most significant online debuts of our time. Ford’s live showing was broadcast on several television stations, YouTube, and social media platforms, thereby creating a groundswell of buzz for this trio of all-new utility vehicles.

But that wasn’t the only story that broke this week. Earlier in the day, Jeep announced its own when it sent out a press release touting the V8 Wrangler Rubicon 392 Concept. What’s especially interesting about the Jeep broadcast is that it 1), dropped just hours ahead of Ford’s big announcement, and 2), it effectively raised the performance bar for the class even as Ford had already planned to do so.

In other words, Jeep saw the Bronco threat to the Wrangler coming and decided to preempt Ford with its news.

Was this a coincidence? Are you kidding me? It was a well-timed and carefully executed strategy to shift eyes away from Ford to Jeep. It was also an unusual ploy as automakers typically don’t steal each other’s thunder on a big-news day.

For its part Jeep broke all protocols and the Internet took notice. Game on!

Most Powerful Engine

So, what’s significant about the Wrangler concept? Well, it puts the possibility of a more powerful engine entering the small/midsize SUV class. That class is dominated by the Wrangler and aided by the Toyota 4Runner. You might add in similar-sized trucks to the equation, but they’re not utility vehicles.

The Ford Bronco immediately becomes another choice and a much more formidable threat to Wrangler sales. Further, the available turbocharged V6 engine in the Bronco is stronger than either Jeep engine, a matter that doesn’t bode well for Wrangler supremacy. Quite simply, Jeep couldn’t allow Ford to seize the moment, so it sent its volley forth ahead of the Bronco debut.

As for the V8 Wrangler Concept, it showcases the possibility of a thunderously powerful engine powering the top-trim Rubicon. As proposed, the engine delivers an even 450 horsepower and 450 foot-pounds of torque. Moreover, it would be the first V8 in this class for Jeep since the 1981 CJ. That model had a 5.0-liter engine with an output of just 125 horsepower and 220 pound-feet of torque. Yes, that’s extremely weak by today’s standard as even some turbocharged four-cylinder engines produce much more.

The Rubicon concept works with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Together, this powertrain will motivate the concept with a 0-60 mph time of under 5 seconds. That’s outstanding, although some Jeep Grand Cherokee models do better. Yet, if this concept does become a production reality (and that’s never a guarantee), it has the potential to shake things up in a segment already rattled by the new Bronco.

Special Equipment

Other equipment touted in the concept includes Dana 44 axles, a full-time two-speed transfer case, electric front and rear-axle lockers, 37-inch mud-terrain tires, and a Jeep Performance Parts two-inch lift kit from Mopar combined with suspension enhancements. The concept also has a 3:73 gear ratio for improved on-road performance and enhanced off-road chops.

We can’t nail down a price, but somewhere in the $60,000 range seems plausible. After all, a fully-equipped Bronco will retail for $65,000.

Other changes touted by the concept for this special four-door Wrangler include special half doors, unique paint treatment and badging, Red Rock-colored leather seats with gold stitching, and a performance steering wheel.

From Concept to Reality

As with most any concept, production is another matter. Typically, manufacturers use concepts to gauge customer interest. Oftentimes, elements from the concept appear in other models, but the concept isn’t built.

We think Jeep will build the V8 Wrangler Rubicon 392, bringing this model line a fourth engine – two gas and one diesel engine are already in place. Jeep already has a plug-in hybrid variant in the pipeline and it will do what is necessary to protect the Wrangler’s position.

All in all, the new Bronco and the Wrangler enhancements are significant moves we think will expand the segment. We also believe other manufacturers will explore their options, including Toyota with an all-new 4Runner that’s certain to follow.

Ford Introduces Its All-New Bronco Family of Utility Vehicles

On Monday, the Ford Motor Company introduced a new series of Bronco vehicles, capitalizing on an iconic name first launched in 1965. The new Broncos, which are composed of two- and four-door SUVs, and one crossover utility vehicle, are designed to help Ford recapture much of the off-road glory it enjoyed in years past.

Bronco SUVs

Production is slated to begin in early 2021 for the standard Bronco models. Ford says the base version will cost $29,995, plus destination. Buyers can reserve one immediately for just $100. The two-door seats four; the four-door seats five.

Ford is touting the new Broncos through its “Built Wild” campaign, which they say is based on “thrilling experiences” through its “heritage-inspired style, engineering and smart off-road technology, plus innovative features to help outdoor enthusiasts create adventures in the most remote corners of the world.” In other words, the new Broncos capture the heritage and capabilities of the original, while incorporating current engineering practices and technologies.

“We created the Bronco family to elevate every aspect of off-road adventure and equipped them with class-leading chassis hardware and exclusive technologies to raise the bar in the rugged 4×4 segment and take people further into the wild,” said Jim Farley, Ford chief operating officer. “They’re built with the toughness of an F-Series truck and performance spirit of Mustang – and come wrapped in one of the most stunning and functional off-road designs that’s true to the original Bronco design DNA.”

Standard Four-Wheel Drive

The new Broncos will feature four-wheel-drive exclusively, something that’s certain to catch the attention of off-road enthusiasts. Depending on the configuration, the new Bronco will benefit from as many as seven driver-selectable modes including Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery and Sand, with Baja, Mud/Ruts and Rock Crawl for off-road driving.

A pair of four-wheel-drive systems are offered on all Bronco models: a base arrangement and a more advanced package. The standard system makes use of a two-speed electronic shift-on-the-fly transfer case, while the optional advanced system features a two-speed electromechanical transfer case that adds an auto mode for on-demand engagement to select between 2H and 4H. Ford says power is distributed to a Dana™ 44 AdvanTEK® solid rear axle and Dana AdvanTEK independent front differential unit – both with available Spicer® Performa-TraK™ electronic locking differentials for improved traction over rough terrain.

Powertrain Choices

Ford has a pair of powertrain choices for the 2021 Broncos. The standard 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is a familiar one, as it is utilized in various Ford products, including the Mustang. In the Bronco, it develops 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Also available is a 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with 310 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque.

The base engine works with either a 7-speed Getrag manual or a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Getrag unit is especially interesting as it is composed of the six standard forward gears and one crawler gear. As for the V6, it comes with the automatic only.


An available 12-inch SYNC4 system features over-the-air updates along with seamless integration to the FordPass Performance app with off-road navigation.

Off-Road Prowess

The new Broncos will enjoy excellent off-road capability thanks to its available best-in-class 11.6-inch ground clearance, upwards of a 43.2-degree approach angle, a maximum 29-degree breakover angle, and a 37.2-degree departure angle. Ford also says the new SUV will enjoy best-in-class water fording capability of up to 33.5 inches. The Bronco also has exposed tow hooks in the front and rear and available heavy-duty modular steel bumpers with an integrated Ford Performance accessory winch mount.

Strategically placed steel shields will protect critical hardware. On the higher-capability models, these will include an available front bash plate, along with shields for the engine, transmission, transfer case, and the fuel tank. For drivers tackling the most challenging conditions, Bronco’s available side rock rails are designed to support the weight of each side of the vehicle.

“Bronco two- and four-door models leverage the company’s Built Ford Tough durability and performance testing and take it even further off-road with Built Wild Extreme Durability Testing in the harshest possible environments, including the brutal trails of the King of the Hammers off-road competition,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford enterprise product line management, Icons.

Heritage Design Cues

Although the all-new Bronco shares nothing with the original, many of the earlier design elements are present, offering a recognizable connection that should instantly win fans.

Up front, the BRONCO insignia makes a bold statement showcasing what this SUV is all about. Other features include dual round headlamps, an upright windshield, removable roof, tight overhangs, and frameless doors that are also removable.

Introducing the Bronco Sport

The Bronco SUVs may arrive after the first of the year, but they’ll be preceded by the Bronco Sport, an entirely different model. This one seats five. The Bronco Sport rides on a unibody chassis, while the Bronco SUVs are true utes with a fully boxed frame arrangement. Thus, the smallest member of the family, which is considered a subcompact (to the compact/midsize Broncos) — likely designed with the Jeep Renegade in mind — won’t have the off-road chops of its siblings.

Nevertheless, it won’t be a mere pretender either – Ford says the cute-ute will have a ground clearance ranging from 7.8 to 8.8 inches, depending on the trim and wheel package. Further, it will have a standard 21.7-degree approach angle, 18.2 degrees on the breakover, and a robust 30.4-degree departure angle. Moving up to the top trims, those numbers rise appreciably to 30.4, 20.4, and 33.1 degrees, respectively.

Bronco Sport Motivation

Like the Bronco SUVs, the Bronco Sport features a pair of engine choices. The standard motivator is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. Also available is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque.

Both engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission. In the upgraded engine this transmission includes manual shifting and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Moving Forward

The Bronco Family represents a sea change for Ford as the company abandons nearly every car model in the states for utility vehicles and trucks. In the Bronco, Ford harnesses a proven and well-respected name, not unlike the Mustang.

Will customers line up for the new models? We think so. We also believe that the Bronco SUVs pose a formidable threat to the Jeep Wrangler which has long enjoyed a near stranglehold on the segment.

The Bronco Sport should carve a niche, especially as it supplies arguably the best off-road chops in its class, including bettering the Jeep Renegade. Likely, it will do two things:

1), serve as the entry point for the Bronco brand, and

2), introduce more drivers to the pleasure of off-road fun.

Of course, if you’re a trail thumping maven, the standard utility vehicles offer the most appeal. This writer longs for the opportunity to test one on the rugged trails of Uwharrie National Forest in North Carolina, the same place where we drove the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Ranger.
