The Jeep marque continues its ascent, as it introduces new and updated models. This Stellantis brand is finding a foothold in new markets, while solidifying its position domestically.
For 2021, an all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee L model expands the product line, bringing a three-row version of the popular Grand Cherokee to the market. It isn’t a derivative of the shorter model. Instead, the Grand Cherokee L sits on an all-new architecture and will yield the next-generation standard-wheelbase model for 2022.
As of this writing, Auto Trends is testing the Grand Cherokee L. Ahead of our official review, we offer the following information about this new model.
Four Trims for the Choosing
The 2021 Grand Cherokee L is available in four trims: Laredo ($36,995), Limited ($43,995), Overland ($52,995), and Summit ($56,995). A special Summit Reserve ($61,995) model is also available. Add $1,695 for the destination charge.
The V6 engine is standard across the model line. The V8 is optional with the two top trims. Upgrading to four-wheel drive is a $2,000 option.
“L” Is For Long
We don’t have the dimensions yet for the 2022 Grand Cherokee, but we think it will roughly parallel the size of the current model. That one sits on a 114.8-inch wheelbase. Meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee L rides on a 121.7-inch wheelbase.
The Grand Cherokee is up to 191.3 inches long to the L’s 204.9 inches. The Grand Cherokee is up to 77.1 inches wide, while the L measures 77.9 inches from side to side. Further, the standard model is upwards of 69.3 inches tall. On the other hand, the L measures 71.5 inches. Ground clearance is nearly the same with the Grand Cherokee supplying 10.6 inches to the 10.9 inches for the extended version. Thus, the L is larger all around with seating for seven to the Grand Cherokee’s five.
Crisp and Modern Design
Launching the Grand Cherokee’s fifth generation, the “L” also advances numerous changes for this popular SUV. The familiar 7-slate grille is evident, but the slats themselves are smaller with substantially larger lower grille opening also present. The headlights supply a sleek and refined look, with available accent lighting supplying an elegant touch.
Move your eyes along the sides and the extended Grand Cherokee advances a formal look with its long roofline, high beltline, and smart use of charter lines and body sculpting. From the rear, the look parallels the previous generation the most, particularly with the shape and size of the taillamps.
Inside, the cabin includes a welcome addition, namely a third row for two. The interior itself is expansive, well thought out, and at the top trim it’s downright luxurious. Cloth seats are standard, while various leather surfaces follow. On the top trim, the quilted Palermo trim is striking and very comfortable. Soft-touch materials throughout give way to real hides and wood inlays. The look is the best we’ve ever seen with a Jeep model.
Tech & Safety Features Galore
Did someone say digital display cluster? That’s exactly what Jeep supplies across the model line. This cluster measures 10.25 inches and is fully customizable. It’s a common feature in today’s luxury cars and fittingly included here.
On the audio front, a 6-speaker system is standard, with 9- and 19-speaker options available. A 10.1-inch console display is standard. Other features include Bluetooth, HD Radio, and satellite radio. Further, Jeep offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility. Multiple USB ports, wireless charging, a head-up display, and a 115-volt outlet are available. Stellantis’ Uconnect5 interface is included.
Among safety features, Jeep supplies a long list of standard equipment, including active lane management. Lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control with full stop and go are standard. Full-speed emergency braking, rear cross path detection, and front and rear parking sensors are also included.
There are a few upgrades available. These include traffic sign recognition, a surround-view camera system, and parking assist. We don’t have the crash test date yet, but we assume that the results will be favorable.
Two Engine Choices
The Grand Cherokee L doesn’t have the engine range of the standard model, but its two offerings are familiar to fans nonetheless. First, we have a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Second, a 5.7-liter V8 engine with 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque is optional.
Both engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The first engine sends power to the rear or to all four wheels. The second engine works with four-wheel-drive only. This model earns a combined 21 mpg city/highway for the V6 and 17 mpg for the V8.
The V6 has a 6,200-pound towing capacity, while the V8 is rated to pull up to 7,200 pounds.
There is Only One
We have yet to touch on the many driving attributes of the new Jeep, including off-roading. We’ll save these details for our review and include other details about this model.
In all, the Jeep Grand Cherokee L gives the brand a formidable competitor in a tightly competitive segment. The Buick Enclave and Ford Explorer are among its nearest competitors. As are the Hyundai Palisade, Mazda CX-9, Kia Telluride, Toyota Highlander, and others.
