Spotlight: 30th Annual Piedmont Classic Chevy Club Car Show

May 27, 2019 by admin 2 Comments

America and Chevrolet in 1969

This Camaro SS was just one of several performance models in Chevrolet’s 1969 product line.

Probably the most significant event of 1969 was the July 20th lunar landing of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. The galactic mission showcased America’s tech prowess in an age when the space program’s computers had less power than the device you hold in your hands today. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” quipped astronaut Neil Armstrong as he set foot on the lunar surface.

That year also saw Richard Milhous Nixon inaugurated as the 37th President of the United States, Vietnam War protests deepen, while the Woodstock Festival gave us three days of peace and music on a bucolic farm in upstate New York.

On the automotive front, Chevrolet continued to lead the U.S. market in sales, fending off archival Ford for another year. It was also a year when Chevrolet flexed its performance muscle, by supplying several powerhouse engines across most of its model line.

Outside of the compact Corvair (which was in its final year, then succeeded by the Vega), models such as the Nova, Chevelle, Camaro, Corvette, and Impala each offered at least one big block V8. It was also the final year for the Impala SS.

Wagons remained the family vehicle of choice and included such names as the Kingswood Estates, Kingswood, Townsman, and Brookwood among Chevy’s full-size models. In the intermediate group were such models as the Concours Estate, Concours, Greenbrier, and Nomad.

The Chevrolet C/K, a line of full-size pickup trucks, were sold under Standard, Custom, and CST (Custom Sort Truck) trims. Chevrolet had 10 (half-ton), 20 (three-quarter ton), and 30 (one-ton) versions. Both medium- and heavy-duty versions of this truck were also offered. The Chevrolet Suburban utility vehicle was now in its sixth generation. Unlike today’s models, this one offered a single driver-side door and two passenger-side doors.

2019 Piedmont Classic Chevy Club Car Show

You’ll find Chevrolet fan clubs all across the country, including some based on specific models such as the Avalanche, Camaro, and Impala. There’s even a Chevrolet Astro fan club in Japan where this small van is revered. Who knew?

In the area where I call home, central North Carolina, is the Piedmont Classic Chevy Club (check out their Facebook page). Launched in 1980 to celebrate Tri-Five (1955, 1956, & 1957 models), the group later expanded to include all classic Chevrolet models. Today, club members span all U.S. makes and models through 1985.

Memorial Day weekend is important for remembering and honoring U.S. military people who gave their lives in war. It is also favored by classic car enthusiasts, including those without weekend getaway plans. On Saturday, the PCCC folk hosted their 30th annual classic car show, once again choosing Lake Wheeler Park in Raleigh, NC as the site for the show.

And it was a hot Saturday at that! By late morning, the temperature had already topped 90 degrees, with a record within reach. Fortunately, that didn’t stop hundreds of classic car fans and their rides from coming out as well as many more spectators. Proceeds from the event were donated to Raleigh’s Hilltop Home for Children.

Without further ado, the following highlights and photos are from this year’s show.

Spotlight: 23rd Annual Triangle British Classic Car Show

May 20, 2019 by admin 3 Comments

23rd Annual Triangle British Classic Car Show

Auto shows are held ‘year round, especially in warmer climates where cold and snow are not much of a factor. In the southeast, including the Carolinas, May begins a stretch of shows lasting into early fall. Thus, if you enjoy classic cars, then this is the season for you.

The 23rd Annual Triangle British Classic Car Show is one such event, held at North Hills in Raleigh on the third Saturday of May. The show is organized by the North Carolina MG Car Club.

This year’s show welcomed nearly 150 British-made vehicles. And despite hot temperatures, the spectators came out in droves.

The show’s organizers supplied clearly marked description signs,
not unlike what’s found at Concours-level events.

From Britain, With Love

British-centric car shows supply us with a rich history of automotive manufacturing. Like the U.S., the U.K. counts scores of defunct brands, including Austin-Healey, MG, Morris, and Reliant, just to name a few. Government-brokered mergers and financial backing helped keep the industry going, with most of the current brands now foreign-owned.

And yet, the connection between old new remains and not just with the right-hand steering wheels of manufacturer’s home market vehicles or with the uniquely British terms bonnet (hood) and boot (trunk) referenced by owners. Further, it doesn’t take a sharp eye to spot any era Jaguar, while most enthusiasts immediately recognize the differences between McLaren and Aston-Martin.

So, let’s celebrate the many classic British models by reviewing what was featured at this year’s show.

MG: Morris Garages

As expected, MG models dominated the event, with most of the models showcased from the 1950s through the 1970s. MG, which is derived from Morris Garages, has gone through a succession of owners since its founding in 1924. Today, the company is owned by China’s SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, which produces a variety of passenger vehicles for the global market, including the U.K. But these models are unrelated to the MG of antiquity.

The MG models popular with collectors fall largely under two groups: MGA (launched in 1955) and MGB (rolled out in 1962 through 1980). Though designed and built in the U.K. at the company’s factory in Abington-on-Thames, England, more than 90 percent of the MGA vehicles produced were shipped abroad. Similarly, the MGB series also found success overseas, especially in the U.S.

Jaguar Motors

Founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, Jaguar remains an important British manufacturer of cars and utility vehicles. Today, the marque represents one part of the Jaguar Land Rover enterprise, now owned by India’s Tata Motors.

A few Jaguars were on hand, including a 1961 Jaguar XK150 and a 1970 E-Type.

Morris Minor

This one may already be in the hands of a new owner.

This Lotus example was the lone representation for the entire brand.

The Mini brand, now owned by BMW, was represented by four models,
with the current designs flanking the two classics.

Besides the British marques, the show made room for modified cars, including this three-wheeled conveyance.

Best of Show

The overall Best of Show award went to this 1936 Rolls-Royce 25/30 Saloon. It was the only RR offering on hand and clearly was a standout.

Highlights of the 2019 New York International Auto Show

April 20, 2019 by admin

The auto industry takes to New York to showcase its very best.

The Big Apple lives up to its name with every major event done in a spectacular way. Fashion Week, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and New Year’s Eve in Times Square are among the annual occurrences that keep New York City on the world stage.

The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) is yet another annual celebration and is especially noteworthy because it is both the oldest show of its kind in the U.S. and it unofficially closes the auto show season in North America. Indeed, beginning with Los Angeles in November, and extending to Detroit in January, Chicago in February and New York in early spring, we’re treated to a succession of new vehicle introductions. That’ll change next year when the Detroit show moves to June, but it may have little impact on what automakers show in Manhattan.

2019 New York International Auto Show
Top: Cadillac CT5. Left: Lincoln Corsair. Right: Genesis Mint Concept.

The 2019 NYIAS

The 2019 NYIAS is now open and showcases more than 1,000 vehicles at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan through April 28. The following are among the highlights of this year’s show, new vehicles worth checking out.

1. Lincoln Corsair. Ford’s luxury brand continues to ditch its forgettable naming convention for standard names. The previous MKC, a compact SUV, is giving way to the all-new Lincoln Corsair. The new model may share its underpinnings with the Ford Escape, but its sheet metal and interior are all its own, much in the vein where the Toyota RAV4 and Lexus NX share the same platform. The new Corsair comes with a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or an available turbocharged 2.3-liter engine, the same as the Ford Mustang. Technology is at the forefront of this model, with such features as a power liftgate, adaptive cruise control, and a lovely Revel audio system available.

2. Genesis Mint Concept. We’ve expected Hyundai’s luxury brand to branch out beyond sedans and utility vehicles for some time. The marque’s first SUV goes on sale later this year with two others to follow. Once Genesis has its three sedans and three SUVs in place, we should see its first electric vehicle roll out. It may very well derive its look from the Mint Concept, a gorgeous coupe with scissor-style rear doors. Genesis pegs its range at just over 200 miles, which is average for the segment, but below that of the competing Tesla Model 3.

3. Cadillac CT5. Just as Lincoln drives away from its nomenclature, Cadillac embraces its own. That’s especially evident in the Cadillac CT5, a small luxury sedan and the replacement model for the previous ATS. You’ll find either a twin-scroll turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a potent twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine, with each paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Standard rear-wheel drive, available all-wheel drive, a 10-inch color display, and advanced driver assist technologies to punctuate this model, which goes on sale in the fall.

Top: Volkswagen Tarok Concept. Left: Toyota Highlander. Right: Hyundai Sonata.

4. Volkswagen Tarok Concept. Volkswagen doesn’t have a pickup truck presence in the U.S. market and that’s something this German automaker wants to rectify. How they’ll get it done isn’t clear with the midsize Amarok available in many markets, while the Tarok Concept takes center stage at the NYIAS. The Tarok reminds us that Volkswagen can easily take one of its small cars and transform it into a truck-like vehicle, much like they did with the Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup in the early 1980s. The concept has a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel drive. Its flip down rear seat supplies access to the truck bed, a style reminiscent of the Chevrolet Avalanche. Ford may supply VW with a truck, as the two automakers forge some type of alliance. But we think the Tarok or something like it will roll out, perhaps relaunching the small pickup market that was prevalent in the 1980s.

5. Hyundai Sonata. The Hyundai Sonata is a midsize sedan in a segment that has been steadily shrinking as the onslaught of crossovers builds. Although Chrysler, Ford and possibly Chevrolet are abandoning the segment, Hyundai doubles down with an all-new 2020 Sonata. Its fetching looks are apparent right up front as the LED accent lights run part way up the hood. It represents a strong response to critics who pilloried Hyundai for the perceived blandness of the outgoing model. Standard under the hood is a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. We expect a hybrid variant to follow.

6. Toyota Highlander. We can’t get enough of three-row crossover utility vehicles, which is why the 2020 Highlander is so important to Toyota. Especially in the face of new and very stiff competition in the form of the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride. The all-new Highlander features a more athletic look, standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, V6 or hybrid powertrains, and a 12.3-inch color display. Speaking of the hybrid, Toyota claims a 17-percent boost in fuel efficiency. That’ll give this model an important edge in the market.

Rivian
Upstart automaker Rivian presents two models in New York.

Best of the Rest

Many more manufacturers rolled out new models and a few concepts to boot at the 2019 NYIAS. An all-new Toyota Yaris joins the Highlander on Toyota’s stage, a model based on the Mazda2. Hyundai is showcasing its all-new Venue crossover, while Nissan has a new Versa sedan. As for the Versa Note, we believe this hatchback won’t be back.

One manufacturer with plenty to show in New York is Mercedes-Benz. The German luxury marque has both the standard and sporty versions of its small CLA35 sedan on hand along with the GLC Coupe and the GLS-Class SUV. You’ll also find models from new manufacturers, including Karlmann King, Mullen Technologies, and Rivian.

In all, New York has something for everyone with present and future technologies evident as well. The show is open on Easter Sunday.

All-New 2020 Subaru Legacy Steps Up

February 10, 2019 by admin

Three decades after rolling out the first Legacy, an all-new model launches this midsize sedan’s fourth decade. This month, the 2020 Legacy rolled out at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, which is just 125 miles from where it will be built at a Lafayette, Indiana, manufacturing plant.

2020 Subaru Legacy
The 2020 Subaru Legacy makes its Chicago Auto Show debut.

Generation Seven: 2020 Subaru Legacy

The seventh-generation Legacy’s introduction comes as the market for midsize sedans continues to shrink. In fact, a number of competitors have left or are leaving the segment, including the Chrysler 200, Dodge Avenger, Mitsubishi Galant, and soon the Ford Fusion. Consumers want crossovers, models already popular with Subaru. That said, this maker of mostly all-wheel-drive vehicles still sees life in the segment.

Besides fewer competitors going forward, what is also helping Subaru is sharing its vehicle architecture across more model lines. Indeed, the 2020 Legacy rides on the Subaru Global Platform, which in 70-percent stiffer torsional and front-suspension rigidity as well as 100-percent stiffer lateral flexural and rear subframe rigidity. Further, Subaru increased structural adhesiveness nearly four-fold. In all, the new model demonstrates gains that will improve crashworthiness, offer improved handling, and deliver a smoother and quieter ride.

Here are the highlights of the 2020 Legacy:

1. Six trims for the choosing. You’ll find Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT and Touring XT trims when the 2020 Legacy rolls out this fall. Every model features standard all-wheel drive, the only model in this segment that can make this claim. In fact, all-wheel drive is available on only two other models: the Ford Fusion Sport and the Nissan Altima.

2020 Subaru Legacy

2. Two engine choices, including a turbo. Returning for 2020 is a 2.4-liter Boxer four-cylinder engine. It has been upgraded to produce 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, numbers which should be adequate for most drivers. But most drivers aren’t the ones drawn to the previously available V6, which has been discontinued. In its place is a turbocharged 2.4-liter Boxer four-cylinder engine with an output of 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers beat the V6’s 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Both of the 2020 engines work with a continuously variable transmission.

3. Improved tech features. What’s a new model without improved tech features? The Subaru Legacy delivers with its new 11.6-inch display screen, a tablet-like device that is sure to please. Subaru integrates its communication system with Starlink technology, which supplies Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto smartphone compatibility on its screen. That screen also controls other functions, include climate and audio. Navigation is also available and is powered by TomTom. Wi-Fi connectivity is another available feature.

4. More premium touches. The auto show display model revealed just how upscale a Legacy can be. It is as if Subaru raised the look to offer a bridge between luxury and mainstream, a trend we’ve seen in models such as the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima. For instance, the Touring trim is outfitted with genuine Nappa leather, which delivers a luxurious look and the comfort to go with it. The interior roof pillars are wrapped in high-gloss black molding and chrome plating dresses the door handles. The Sport edition has aluminum pedals and red stitching on the instrument panel. Other changes include three levels of heating for the available heated front seats.

2020 Subaru Legacy

5. Safety enhancements galore. You’d expect Subaru to defend its top-tier safety rating when designing a new Legacy. The new model does just that. New this year is a Front View Monitor, which captures images within the driver’s blind spot and displays a 180-degree view on the color display. This is helpful for pedestrian detection and parking. Other driver-assist features include LED steering responsive headlamps on the Limited and Touring trims, reverse automatic braking, and blind spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert.

More Details to Follow

There are a few things about the 2020 Legacy that aren’t yet known. It appears slightly larger than the outgoing model, but we weren’t supplied with model specifications, including wheelbase and overall length. It does, however, sit slightly lower to the ground and that’s no small feat for an all-wheel-drive sedan.

Pricing won’t be announced until nearer this vehicle’s release date. We could see a slight boost in cost for the base model, with larger increases at the top of the model range.

Ram Chassis Cab is Here and Brings With it Class-Leading Numbers

February 8, 2019 by admin

2019 Ram 5500 Chassis Cab Limited.
2019 Ram 5500 Chassis Cab Limited.

Ram pickup trucks are tearing up the market, thanks in part to an all-new model that’s “bringing it” to the segment. That model is none other than the Ram 1500, which is the brand’s standard full-size truck.

But the 1500 is also joined by a pair of heavy-duty models, the 2500 and 3500. These two vehicles help Ram claim the highest performance, payload and towing numbers in the business.

Ahead of the Chicago Auto Show this week, we began to hear rumblings of something new from Ram. One rumor was quickly confirmed — an available 60/40 split tailgate, giving Ram a viable option to GMC’s “trick” gate.

All-New Ram Chassis Cab

Fortunately, Ram isn’t stopping there. Fiat Chrysler’s truck brand announced that it is releasing all-new chassis cab models. These updated trucks (3500, 4500, and 5500) come with a Cummins 6.7-liter turbo-diesel six-cylinder engine with an output of 360 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can also select a 6.4-liter gasoline V8 engine. Both engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Yes, these diesel performance numbers are lower than what the standard Ram 3500 delivers, but that’s okay — the real proof of what the new chassis cab does is in another set of numbers.

And those numbers put Ram Commercial at the top of the segment as this pickup truck has a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 43,000 pounds. Moreover, the new Ram supplies 35,200 pounds of towing and a payload capacity of 12,510 pounds. Thus, Ram can claim top numbers ahead of its competitors: Ford and Chevrolet/GMC.

2019 Ram Chassis Cab

Upfit and Outfit

At the press conference announcing the new models, a Ram spokesman noted the new trucks may be outfitted to serve in a variety of ways. As such, Ram displayed models that included a bucket truck, a crew cab with a horse trailer, and other work vehicles. The spokesman also suggested the chassis cab could be converted into an ambulance and that’s something we don’t usually see from Ram.

The new chassis cab is stronger and lighter than before thanks to the truck maker utilizing 97-percent high-strength steel frames. Thus, torsional rigidity is up, while weight is down — by approximately 120 pounds.

Tech and Style Highlights

Ram equips the chassis cab with UConnect 4C with a 12-inch display. The package includes the latest audio entertainment with SiriusXM with 360L. Other updates include a “reimagined” center console with a functional workspace featuring more than a dozen different storage layouts. It also has a wider docking area for optional wireless charging and has three USB ports (with two more in the rear).

A pair of available 115-volt three-prong plugs is designed to handle up to 400 watts for charging electronic devices or power tools. Moreover, folding up the rear bench seat reveals an additional contained storage space with under-seat compartments.

Four different grille styles accompany the 2019 Ram Chassis Cab, with not a crosshairs look to be found. The new bumper has larger openings, which supply greater airflow to the turbo intercooler. Ram also integrated proximity sensors to make them less obvious. You’ll find three headlamp variations, including an adaptive front lighting system. Finally, a new shark antenna handles radio, Wi-Fi, navigation and SiriusXM 360L.

Ram Commercial Truck

The Hit Parade

Ram continues to chalk up big gains and that’s a reflection of an automaker anticipating customer needs. Despite all the superlatives gushed at the news conference (e.g., massive, big, best-in-class, powerful) Ram appears to put up with those claims. That’s another salvo fired across the bow of both Ford and GM.

Chicago new car reveals and concepts from McCormick Place.

Slingshot
Yours truly moments before he took this three-wheeled “Slingshot” for a spin around the garage.

The Chicago Auto Show is back and it is greater than ever! Pardon the hyperbole as my analysis is based on three consecutive annual visits to what’s arguably the largest show of its kind, at least by attendance.

What Chicago has often lacked is new product reveals outside of the special edition models manufacturers routinely showcase at the McCormick Place convention center. But this year there are several new models set to debut, including the 2020 Subaru Legacy. The pickup truck makers are here as well, with Ford set to supply full details of its refreshed 2020 Super Duty line, which includes an all-new engine.

Chicago Auto Show Concept & Technology Garage

Auto Trends will update this page several times over the next three days as new information is released. To kick things off, we started our time in Chicago with a visit to the Concept & Technology Garage, where manufacturers display dozens of vehicles for journalist review. The garage is open for two hours, supplying ample time to sample and drive what’s available.

Lexus LC Convertible Concept

Lexus LC Convertible Concept
Luscious, sporty and luxurious: Lexus LC Convertible Concept.

Lexus’ crowing achievement is the LC convertible, although you can make an argument for the LS sedan. Then there is this matter of the exotic LFA sports car we saw a few years ago.

The Lexus LC is a six-figure sports car and a delicious testament to the marque’s design acumen. We previewed both the conventional and hybrid versions in Hawaii two years ago, then followed up with a week-long visit.

What struck us about the LC is that it has the canvas for a beautiful convertible. True to form, Lexus’ designers were given permission to develop such a model and it is now in concept form. We’re thinking this model will see the light of day. In very small numbers and at a price premium beyond what us mere mortals can afford.

2019 Ford Ranger

Slingshot
The Ford Ranger returns and this time it offers one powertrain combination. Will that be enough?

We’re waiting for a Ford Ranger to arrive for a week’s review. In the meantime, the Chicago Auto Show offers a nice venue for showcasing Ford’s all-new midsize truck.

Just introduced, Ford is already adding another shift to handle demand. The competition is certainly stiff, but the Ranger is a formidable entry in its own right. Powered by a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Ranger has the performance numbers to keep up with the top sellers.

No, there was no Ranger Raptor concept in sight. We think one will eventually be built, especially as that performance trim is available overseas.

Kia Telluride Concept

Kia Telluride
A Kia Telluride like none other.

If you’re not familiar with the Kia Telluride yet, you will soon become acquainted with this vehicle. The 2020 Telluride slots in as Kia’s largest vehicle when it goes on sale this summer. It seats eight passengers and is slightly larger than the Sorento.

The Telluride will also feature a number of premium features, including elegant LED tail lamps borrowed from the range-topping K900 sedan. You’ll also find four-wheel independent suspension, an available self-leveling rear suspension, available double-stitched Nappa leather, and an oversized display screen.

What you won’t find, at least not initially is anything remotely like a Telluride concept vehicle on display at the Chicago Auto Show. This vehicle seats just four — it has a 2+2 layout (third row removed) and offers a sport suspension, off-road tires, a performance exhaust system and a snorkel pipe so it doesn’t choke on dirt.

We have no idea how this concept performs off-road, but we like to think it is much more than a gentle pebble pusher. It has the look of a more capable off-roader and combines that with a rooting tooting exhaust system.

2020 Subaru Legacy

2020 Subaru Legacy
The all-new Subaru Legacy rolls out this fall.

Some manufacturers may be quitting the midsize sedan market, but Subaru is staying put.

In fact, this Japanese automaker with its U.S. headquarters located in Camden, NJ and with a manufacturing plant in Indiana, has a new Legacy coming to the market. The 2020 Legacy arrives this fall and it will feature many changes to its design, technologies, powertrain choices and more.

Most models come with a 2.5-liter BOXER engine with 182 horsepower. Also available is a turbocharged 2.4-liter BOXER engine making 260 horsepower. It replaces the previous V6 engine. Both engines work with a continuously variable transmission.

Other changes include a tablet-style 11.2-inch multimedia screen, available NAPPA leather, a DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation system, and more trunk room.

Longer Range Nissan Leaf Debuts at CES

January 9, 2019 by admin

Enhanced Leaf model extends vehicle range.

Nissan Leaf e+
Nissan’s Leaf is now joined by an extended range “e+” model.

The Nissan Leaf remains the world’s most popular electric vehicle, but the number of competitors on the market continues to rise even as gas prices plummet. For its part, Nissan continues to tweak the Leaf and will soon offer an extended range e+ model, following the product’s introduction this week at CES in Las Vegas.

The former Consumer Electronics Show is now an important stop in the auto show circuit, allowing automakers such as Nissan to showcase their wares. Tech-laden electric vehicles, such as the Nissan Leaf, are particularly popular there, as they demonstrate the latest and greatest offerings and concepts from the industry.

The Range-Extended Nissan Leaf

For the Nissan Leaf, the “e+” designation describes the increased energy density of this model’s 62-kilowatt battery pack as well as the higher output of the powertrain. As a result, the electric range is now 40 percent longer, supplying up to 226 miles of range.

2019 Nissan Leaf e+“The new Nissan LEAF e+ offers all of the style, convenience and electric vehicle benefits that have helped make LEAF the best-selling electric vehicle in the world, plus even more driving excitement, range, power and choice,” said Denis Le Vot, senior vice president and chairman, Nissan North America. “Customers now have a selection of powertrains and models to best suit their driving needs.”

Nissan intends to market the enhanced Leaf under the LEAF PLUS Series umbrella in the United States and Canada. Each trim level will receive its own special designation, including S PLUS, SV PLUS, and SL Plus. Elsewhere, Nissan will simply market the vehicle as the Nissan Leaf e+.

More Powerful Powertrain

As for the Leaf’s all-electric powertrain, it is composed of a higher-capacity battery and a more powerful 160-kilowatt motor, resulting in 45 percent more power and a robust 250 pound-feet of torque. This means that at driving speeds, owners will notice a 13-percent boost in speed when going from 50 to 75 mph. Moreover, the model’s top speed increases by 10 percent thanks to the changes.

The boosted Leaf also benefits from a newly-available 70-100-kilowatt Quick Charging system, which allows the Leaf e+ to charge just as fast as models not similarly equipped. This is especially impressive as battery capacity is 55-percent larger than the standard Leaf. Further, even with the 25-percent increase in energy density and the enhanced energy storage capacity, the Leaf e+ battery pack is nearly the same size as the standard Leaf’s pack.

Nissan Leaf e+

ProPILOT Assist and e-Pedal

Other significant features of the Leaf e+ is its ProPILOT Assist, semi-autonomous driving system. When activated, the system automatically adjusts the speed of this electric vehicle, anytime when cruise control is set anywhere between 18 and 62 mph. The system helps the driver steer and keep the electric vehicle centered in the lane. Furthermore, when the car in front slows down or stops, the system does likewise for the Leaf. Auto Trends has tested this feature in several products, including most recently in the Nissan Rogue. We can attest to its effectiveness.

Another important feature of all Leaf models is its e-Pedal operation. The system allows the driver to start, accelerate, decelerate and stop, using only the accelerator pedal. In effect, it serves as an automatic braking system which also supplies regenerative braking (kinetic energy) that supplies electricity to the battery. Thus, battery range is maximized, enabling drivers to gain a few extra miles before needing to replenish same.

Pricing and Release Date

Pricing for the enhanced Leaf will be announced just ahead of its U.S. debut this spring. As for the standard Leaf, it costs $30,875, including an $885 destination charge. Federal, state and local incentives may reduce your costs further.

As for the Leaf’s extended range, this will help Nissan better compete in a segment where 250+ miles is the new normal. Other models, such as the Chevrolet Bolt, Tesla Model 3, and the Hyundai Kona EV feature longer ranges. For its part, Nissan appears to be banking on the model’s popularity to help keep it on top in this growing segment.

SEMA Shock Yellow Chevy Camaro Dazzles

October 16, 2018 by admin 1 Comment

There is yellow and then there is Shock Yellow.

SEMA 2019 Chevy Camaro
When your “yellow” is brighter than the center stripe, this is what you get.

We’re still two weeks away from the start of the 2018 SEMA Show, which has become the definitive auto show for all things wild and crazy. Just like its host city, Las Vegas.

Automotive manufacturers routinely roll out one or more special models at SEMA, capitalizing on the massive media attention this event supplies. SEMA isn’t open to the public, but thousands of journalists give it ample coverage, so its almost like you are there.

Shocking 2019 Chevrolet Camaro

GM isn’t waiting for the show to start to tease us with one very special version of the 2019 Chevy Camaro. The Shock yellow exterior color lives up to its name, a can’t miss model that also includes several concept touches.

Those touches include a relocated bow time emblem along with hood and fender graphics.

2019 Chevy Camaro

Joining this special model (which will be available in early 2019) is a personalized Camaro LT convertible. The convertible will be shown in Satin Steel Grey Metallic and feature concept red accents and other accessories. Chevrolet will showcase more than a dozen models in total at this year’s show.

The dazzling Camaro coincides with a fresh look Chevrolet gave to the 2019 Camaro. Explained Steve Majoros, director of Chevrolet Car and Crossover Marketing. “It’s the perfect canvas for personalization, and the new Shock color and available accessories demonstrate only some of the possibilities customers have to make the Camaro entirely theirs.”

New Accessories and Performance Parts

The expanded roster of Chevrolet accessories and performance parts were developed by the same designers and engineers who created the Camaro, in an effort to supply coherent design and performance unification.

You’ll find such features as all-new ground effects, a black wing spoiler, a fuel door with exposed carbon-fiber insert, black Camaro fender badges, 50-state-legal cold-air induction kits, Recaro seats, a Brembo six-piston front brake upgrade kit and various 1LE suspension components.

Refreshed Chevy Camaro

The 2019 Camaro refresh features new front-end styling on some models, including the fascia, grille, hood and lighting. The lighting upgrades include dual-element headlamps and new LED signature lighting. The ZL1 trim returns with its airflow optimized front-end styling, while the RS Package provides its own unique headlamps and signature lights.

From the rear, the 2019 Camaro gains new tail lamps with a dual-element design. Red lenses are found on the LS and LT trims, with the RS, SS and ZL1 decked in dark-tinted clear lenses.

Additional changes for 2019 include a new Turbo 1LE model. The Camaro SS now offers a 10-speed automatic transmission with pads shifters, launch control and line lock. Updated wheel designs, the latest in Chevrolet infotainment, an available full-display rearview camera and available forward collision alert round out the changes.

2018 SEMA Show

Auto Trends won’t have a direct presence in Las Vegas this year, but we’ll share highlights and special takes about the 2018 SEMA Show. Word has it that several flamboyant models are on tap, but that’s par for the course in a city that is known for its glitziness.

Hold Fast: VinFast Does Paris

October 2, 2018 by admin 3 Comments

Vietnam throws its hat into the automotive manufacturing ring.

VinFast LUX SA2.0
The VinFast SUV reflects Italian design acumen.

Vietnam has a homegrown car company known as VinFast and this upstart automaker is showcasing its new models at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. VinFast is not a household name and its vehicles aren’t likely to be sold in the U.S. anytime soon.

VinFast LUX SA2.0Nevertheless, the Vietnamese automaker has two models to show for it, with both going into production in 2019.

VinFast is the first Vietnamese automaker, but it isn’t the first company to produce new cars in this Southeastern Asia nation of nearly 100 million residents. Most passenger vehicles produced in Vietnam are from knock-down kits, cars partially assembled abroad then completed locally. Chevrolet, Hyundai, and Toyota are among the brands present.

As for VinFast, the company is making it clear that its Italian-inspired models are Vietnamese influenced.

VinFast LUX SA2.0The company tapped Pininfarina, the Italian design house with developing the new models based on consumer input. The result is two models, a sedan and a crossover utility vehicle, that the company believes reflect the country’s spirit.

VinFast calls its two models the LUX A2.0 and LUX SA2.0, names that hardly roll off of the tongue or are easy to commit to memory. Nevertheless, this naming strategy has been embraced by upstart automakers before (e.g., Ford Model T and A; every European manufacturer), but may eventually change especially as the company eyes foreign markets.

David Beckham Presents

Not wasting any time, VinFast tapped retired English professional footballer David Beckham to tout the brand. Beckham was introduced at the 2018 Paris Motor Show for the official unveiling of the two VinFast models.

“I’ve always been a car fanatic, and it’s a thrill to be here in Paris to celebrate the arrival of a new carmaker on the global stage. When I met you and your colleagues backstage earlier, the passion that you all have for the cars is infectious. It’s an inspirational story and I’m really excited to be part of this launch moment for VinFast,” noted Beckham to VinFast personnel.

VinFast
The VinFast sedan is based on a rear-wheel-drive architecture.

New Model Highlights

Not all details about the new model have surfaced yet. The only photos supplied by the manufacturer are exterior shots. But those photos do reveal the artistic design flair incorporated. VinFast could have chosen a more utilitarian look and satisfied its home audience. But the automaker is looking to begin exports not too soon after Vietnam consumers become acquainted with the brand.

VinFast LUX A2.0We do know that powering both models is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Apparently, there will be two performance variants. The first one will produce 173 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. The second one has an output of 231 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The sedan will offer both choices, while the utility vehicle will have the higher output version only.

Both models, by the way, offer standard rear-wheel drive. The SUV will also have an all-wheel-drive option. This is a common layout for premium European models.

Letting Loose and Looking Ahead

VinFast has already indicated it won’t stop with its two initial models. Indeed, the company has struck a deal with General Motors to market a city car under the VinFast name. VinFast and GM also have a partnership agreement in place, which resulted in the transfer of GM’s Hanoi automotive plant to VinFast.

VinFast LUX A2.0Other models planned include an electric car and an electric bus. All three models are currently under development.

What are VinFast’s chances of success? It may be quite good as the company has extensive government backing and sought early on to bring consumers to the development process. It would be foolish for anyone to underestimate the company’s potential, given that manufacturers such as Hyundai and Tesla have successfully disrupted the market in their own time and expertise.

Spotlight: 24th Annual Rod & Custom Show Presented by the Stray Cats

September 2, 2018 by admin 5 Comments

Stray Cats and a classic car show.

24th Annual Rod & Custom Show Presented by the Stray Cats
At 10 a.m, the 24th Annual Rod & Custom Show Presented by the Stray Cats
officially began with the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Labor Day weekend is the unofficial end of summer for some parts of the country, but here in the Southeast, it means something else: the start of the college football season!

It is also one of the best weekends of the year for taking in classic car shows, which is exactly what this writer did on Saturday with a visit to Littleton, North Carolina. That’s where the locally based Stray Cats Hot Rod Association convened for their 24th Annual Rod & Custom Show. And true to its name, there were multiple examples of hot rods and custom-modified vehicles on display.

34th Littleton/Lake Gaston Festival

The hot rod association’s event is one component of the annual Littleton/Lake Gaston Festival organized by the Littleton Lions Club. Held behind the stores on one side of East South Main Street, the festival includes carnival rides, all-day entertainment, food and craft vendors and, of course, vision screenings.

Stray Cats Hot Rod AssociationAs for the classic car component, it is held on the opposite side of the street, well behind Grandpa’s Kitchen with entrance made along Ferguson Street.

Like other shows of its kind, the Stray Cats began welcoming cars at 8 a.m. Registrants first covered the parking lots before taking over the adjoining grass areas. Judging was held throughout the morning and early afternoon with an awards ceremony at 3 p.m. My visit, however, was limited to the morning hours, but I believe the photos included here offer a good representation of the vehicles on hand.

Without further ado, I present to you a photo selection from this year’s show.
