Smaller, More Potent Turbo Engine Powers Volkswagen Jetta

August 11, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

Volkswagen continues to find ways to squeeze more power out of its engines, gasoline and diesel alike. For 2016, the Volkswagen Jetta will be powered by this automaker’s all-new gasoline engine, a turbocharged, direct-injected powerplant displacing at just 1.4 liters.

The new 1.4 liter engine will replace two gasoline engines: a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four and a 1.8-liter turbocharged four. Both gas engines have long been available in the Jetta, but will give way to the new engine as part of Volkswagen’s engine downsizing effort. Diesel and hybrid variants of the Jetta will continue.

More Efficient Jetta Engine

The EA211 four-cylinder engine features lightweight aluminum construction and brings in an integrated exhaust manifold as well as a toothed-belt drive for its double overhead camshaft valvetrain making use of variable intake and exhaust timing. It retains the 82 mm (3.23 inch) cylinder spacing of the outgoing engine and measures 2.93 bore x 3.15 stroke. That change provides an improved platform for increasing torque through direct induction, such as turbocharging or supercharging.

With a 10.0:1 compression ratio, the new engine makes an estimated 150 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 184 foot-pounds of torque at 1,400 rpm. Those numbers compare favorably to the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine powering the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze. Indeed, the Cruze’s motor is SAE-rated at 153 horsepower and 177 foot-pounds of torque.

Volkswagen will pair the EA211 engine with a standard five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission. The automatic transmission is expected to help the Volkswagen Jetta achieve 39 mpg on the highway. That figure compares to the current 37 mpg for the 1.8-liter turbo and 34 mpg for the 2.0-liter four. The Chevrolet Cruze achieves 38 mpg, although a Cruze Eco model is EPA-rated at 42 mpg.

Advanced Safety Technologies for the Masses

Just as Volkswagen releases a new engine, the world’s largest car manufacturer (by sales through the first half of 2015), is making other changes in an effort to stoke its weak US sales.

Undeniably, its most consequential move for 2016 as far as technologies go may have to do with its self-described democratization of its high-end driver assistance features. Specifically, Volkswagen will make available adaptive cruise control, front assist (forward collision warning and autonomous braking), blind spot monitor with rear traffic alert, lane departure warning, parking steering assistant, park distance control and automatic post-collision braking to more models.

Thus, the Volkswagen Beetle, CC, e-Golf, Golf, Golf GTI, Golf R, Golf SportWagen and Jetta will offer these features, depending on the trim level. What’s significant about this move is that such safety features were once the dominion of luxury makes before filtering to premium mainstream models.

By making such features widely available elsewhere, Volkswagen throws down the gauntlet in front of its competitors. Likely, we’ll see a response from the likes of Toyota, Ford and Honda, but at least for now Volkswagen can claim the safety initiative amongst the common, small cars that dot its product line.

Growing US Sales

While Volkswagen moved ahead of Toyota to become the world’s largest automaker three years ahead of schedule, it still needs to find a way to solve its persistently weak US operating presence.

Sales were up 2.4 percent in July, but are still down by 1.9 percent year to date in a market that is up by 5 percent. Not only does Volkswagen trail the big guys — Toyota, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda and Nissan — but it is begin beaten by Hyundai and Kia as well as Subaru, one the market’s smallest players.

Volkswagen’s Jetta, Passat and Golf families are its three top selling model lines, but sales of its Tiguan and Touareg crossovers are of little consequence in a market heavily tilted toward all things SUV. However, that may begin to change when Volkswagen begins building its seven-passenger CrossBlue utility vehicle by the end of 2016.

Model Updates Stoke Chevrolet Brand

July 27, 2015 by admin 1 Comment

Chevrolet’s US sales are up 4.9 percent through June, keeping pace with the market. Several new and updated products will roll out for the 2016 model year, heralding additional changes in the coming years.

Chevrolet Silverado

The Chevrolet Silverado receives a facelift for 2016.

Catching the Competition

The Chevrolet brand has long trailed Ford in overall sales and Toyota in retail sales, positions GM would like to overcome. The Chevrolet brand continues to provide a strong presence in more than 140 markets globally and the brand still accounts for at least two of every three GM models sold in the United States.

Chevrolet is aggressively overhauling its product line by bringing several new and improved models to the market in 2016. The best-selling Chevrolet is its full-size Silverado truck. And as this model enters its third model year, the pickup gets a more gutsy visage along with the wider application of its 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Silverado update comes a year sooner than expected and should provide the impetus for continued Chevrolet truck growth. That growth should spread to the Colorado as this midsize model begins offering a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine this fall.

An All-New Chevrolet Camaro

Chevrolet Camaro fans have been delighted since the sports coupe returned for the 2010 model. Now it’s time to roll out a new generation model, one that will be underpinned by the same platform driving the Cadillac ATS and CTS. New for 2016 is a base turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. However, Auto Trends sees most buyers upgrading to the larger engines with some people deciding to wait an extra year for the Z/28’s return.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro

The sixth generation Chevrolet Camaro.

Perhaps the bow tie’s weakest link is in the midsize segment, where the Chevrolet Malibu is outsold by such major players as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and the Ford Fusion. Even the Hyundai Sonata outsells the Chevy, with the Kia Optima, Chrysler 200, and Mazda6 each offering stiff competition. The 2016 Malibu will resolve chief deficiencies, including a longer wheelbase to provide improved rear seating room. The Malibu will also get its first full-blown hybrid model, one that is expected to challenge the Honda Accord Hybrid’s 47 mpg rating.

Production of the next generation Chevrolet Cruze won’t start until February, thus the new model may be assigned with a 2017 model year designation. The Cruze is a strong player in the compact segment despite currently being limited to one body style and not having a true performance variant. However, the new model will add a hatchback body style and come in larger than its antecessor. Chevrolet will also replace the available 2.0-liter, turbo-diesel with one displacing at 1.6 liters. WardsAuto notes that the new four banger will be a quieter engine too.

An All-New Chevrolet Volt

Vehicle electrification remains a priority for GM despite flagging demand. The second generation Chevrolet Volt rolls out this fall and promises to provide up to 50 miles of electric-only range. The Volt will keep its gas generator, ensuring that range anxiety is never a valid concern.

2016 Chevrolet Malibu

More backseat room comes with the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.

Just as there are significant updates in progress for several Chevrolet models, there is some uncertainty with a few others.

As Chevrolet brings the all-electric Bolt to the market in 2017, the Chevrolet Spark EV will likely go away. However, the standard gas-powered Spark should remain. What we won’t see updated anytime soon is the subcompact Sonic, a model that will remain in production “as is” even as the segment erodes. Here, consumers are opting for larger cars and small crossovers, something Chevrolet offers in the Cruze and Trax, respectively.

An All-New Chevrolet Crossover

Chevrolet will also slot a new crossover between the Equinox and the Traverse, probably by 2017. Rumors of a mid-engined Corvette are not going away, but that car’s appearance will probably come much later, rather sooner. Lastly, get ready to kiss the Chevrolet SS goodbye as this Australian-imported, Holden-derived sedan will likely die once GM stops production down under in two years.

Chevrolet Volt

The second generation Chevy Volt debuts this fall.

So, will Chevrolet gain market share in the next year? Likewise, will its competitors be up to challenging Chevy’s stronger product line? The answers to both questions is likely “yes” with some of the weaker players falling further behind.

With Mitsubishi planning to close its lone US manufacturing plant, rumors that this small, Japanese manufacturer may pull out of the domestic market altogether are on the rise. If Mitsubishi does indeed quit, that leaves upwards of 100,000 customers looking at other mainstream brands, including Chevrolet, to satisfy their new car shopping needs.

Sparkling New Mazda Miata Debuts

September 4, 2014 by admin 2 Comments

World debut for an iconic roadster.

2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata.
2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Mazda holds a special place in the hearts and minds of certain car owners and it is for that reason it still manages to attract a decent following, largely on the strength of three models: the Mazda6 sedan, the CX-5 crossover and its best-selling Mazda3 line. While these three models provide the volume, it is the iconic MX-5 Miata sports car that places the halo over the brand name.

That honor was once shared with the RX-8 but production of the rotary-driven sports car ceased in 2012. The Miata will carry the torch alone for now or until Mazda dusts off its rotary technology, something that has been rumored it will do.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Last night, Mazda introduced the fourth generation Miata, a two-seat rear-wheel drive sports car that upholds the tradition while reaching out to an entirely new generation. Simultaneous events in Tokyo, Barcelona, and Monterey, Calif., welcomed the new roadster with 1980s music group Duran Duran performing live on the west coast.

That made for a big introduction for a model that recorded just 5,780 US sales in 2013 according to Good Car Bad Car. The Miata, however, is more popular elsewhere — attracting a loyal following in Europe as well as in its home country, Japan. Even should US sales stay between 10,000 and 20,000 units or about half of what were sold during its peak years, the benefit of having such an attractive model in the lineup will most certainly lift the entire Mazda brand. Most likely the new model will do quite well.

Chicago Auto Show Debut

It was at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1989 when Mazda took the wraps off its all-new Miata roadster. The idea for the Miata was presented to Mazda by an American journalist, Bob Hall, who shared a rough sketch of the proposed model to Kenichi Yamamoto, head of Mazda’s Research and Development department. Hall was later hired by Mazda’s US design team, but worked on other projects before his involvement with what eventually became the Miata.

Through three generations, the Mazda has maintained a similar overall look, while still delivering subtle exterior updates and keeping abreast of technological changes inside as well as under the hood. The Miata name transitioned to the MX-5 for a time stateside before moving on to its current dual-name appellation. Most fans simply prefer to call the cute roadster the Miata, an Old High German word for “reward.”

Skyactive Technology and Kodo Design

New Miata customers will, indeed, be rewarded with a darling sports car just as previous generation owners have been. Mazda says that the 2016 edition — due to hit the market in early 2015 — embodies the SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY of its other models, representing fuel efficient engines and transmissions as well as stiffer bodies.

In a related press release Mazda noted, “Innovate in order to preserve” was the motto for the fourth generation, as the development team searched for innovations that go beyond simple evolution. Environmental and safety demands are much more stringent than they were when the first generation MX-5 was introduced 25 years ago, but the fourth generation stays true to the model’s original aim of offering the pure driving fun that only a lightweight sports car can.”

Mazda’s KODO design language is evident in the roadster’s body and interior for the most compact iteration of this iconic roadster. The 2016 MX-5 Miata weighs 220 pounds less than the current model what Mazda says will improve its driving fun. More information about the Miata will be released closer to its release date. On the Way: 2016 Ford Taurus

March 20, 2014 by admin 3 Comments

Lighter full-size sedan expected in summer 2015.

2013 Ford Taurus SHO.
The next generation Taurus will look nothing
like the current model.

Large sedans may no longer carry the status they once did, but to automakers they represent both premium and profitable models, serving retail and fleet customers alike. The Ford Taurus is one such vehicle, a model name rescued by CEO Alan Mulally soon after he took the helm in 2006. What was originally a midsize vehicle has morphed into a full-size model, replacing the aged Crown Victoria as Ford’s flagship sedan.

2016 Ford Taurus

Ford plans to keep making the Taurus and is now readying a new model in time for the 30th-anniversary edition. On Tuesday, Edmunds.com reported that an all-new Taurus is due out in the third quarter of 2015, citing an unnamed Ford source who shared some tidbits about the upcoming model.

The next-generation Ford Taurus will come in lighter than the current edition, losing the Volvo-based platform it has used for the past 10 years. The new model will be derived from the same one underpinning the Ford Fusion midsize sedan, stretched and widened to accommodate the Taurus. That move will allow Ford to share many components and hold down costs, a strategy that other automakers currently employ.

Indeed, the Chevrolet Malibu (midsize) and Chevrolet Impala (large) are derived from the same platform as are the Toyota Camry (midsize) and Toyota Avalon (large) sedans. Expect Ford to make good use of light weighting, perhaps employing an aluminum body just as they plan to do with the 2015 Ford F-150 when it is released later this year.

Engine Possibilities

The new Ford Taurus will offer standard front-wheel drive with all-wheel drive optional. Its engine line up may change with Auto Trends forecasting that the now optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine will become the standard engine.

Though the displacement is small, the four-cylinder engine currently produces 240 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and has an output of 270 foot-pounds of torque in the 2014 Ford Taurus. And that is in the base model weighing in at 3,964 pounds. Lighten the load and you’ll get a faster sedan and improved fuel economy. That should also allow Ford to offer the four banger will all-wheel drive, something it doesn’t provide with the current edition except with the V-6.

The 2014 Taurus base engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 making 288 horsepower. An EcoBoost version (with twin turbochargers and direct injection) is sold with the Taurus SHO, making 365 horsepower. Me thinks that the Taurus SHO may retain the larger engine while the all-new 2.7-liter V-6 slated for the Ford F-150 could become the optional engine for the standard Taurus. The larger EcoBoost would also be used in the Police Interceptor sedan, which is based on the Taurus.

Transmission Direction

The transmission choices may be a bit more difficult to pin down, but a base Taurus could be paired with a six-speed automatic as currently used. Ford is also putting the finishing touches on a nine-speed automatic, what would be used elsewhere.

That transmission if optionally paired with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine should help the Taurus achieve at least 35 mpg on the highway (up from 32 mpg), tops in its segment.

With start/stop technology, light weighting and various aerodynamic adjustments such as automatically closing shutters, 25 mpg in town would be within reach. It wasn’t too long ago that compact sedans produced similar numbers.

Looking a bit further out, the Taurus might also offer a hybrid system, providing yet another way for Ford to meet ever-increasing federal fuel economy mandates.

Rising Ford Taurus Sales

Sales of the Ford Taurus increased by 4.5 percent in 2013, with 69,063 units sold. Add in sales for the Police Interceptor sedan and nearly 80,000 units rolled out of the factory door, up by more than 50 percent over 2009 reports Reuters.

Jaguar XE: 2016 US Arrival for Sports Sedan

March 6, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

All-new Jaguar XE debuts in Geneva.

Jaguar XE
An aluminum-intensive Jaguar XE arrives in the US in 2016.

The Geneva Motor Show is serving up a number of hits this week including new products from Opel, Lamborghini, and Mercedes-Benz, to name a few. Jaguar has also gotten into the mix, announcing that its new compact sports sedan will be called the XE, featuring what the automaker says is an aluminum intensive unibody layout.

The all-new Jaguar XE will be built in the United Kingdom with its engines produced at a new Jaguar Land Rover Engine Manufacturing plant, also in the UK. Owned by Tata Motors, Jaguar as well as Land Rover have maintained independence while benefiting from the backing of a much larger automaker.

The Jaguar XE goes on sale in 2015 in Europe. The sedan arrives stateside in 2016.

Jaguar XE: From Concept to Reality

The upcoming model is based on the C-X17 concept car introduced in 2013, featuring an aluminum intensive structure. Jaguar claims that the sedans lightweight layout improves handling, performance, refinement, and efficiency. Specifications were not announced at Jaguars news conference.

Ian Callum, Director of Design, said: The new Jaguar XE is every bit a modern Jaguar car; more compact in size but visually striking. Customers will expect a great deal from a compact Jaguar car it must be practical but premium. We never forget we are designing a Jaguar car and that means it must be as exciting to look at and drive as it is brilliant to run and practical to own. We believe weve done just that with the Jaguar XE.

Ingenium Engine Range

The new engine manufacturing center will produce both four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines that are lightweight, low-friction and emit fewer emissions. Both are part of Jaguars Ingenium engine range.

The all-new Jaguar XE compact sport sedan will bring Jaguar into the largest segment of the luxury car market with a dynamic new entry that will challenge the status quo of luxury car brands, said Jeff Curry, Brand Vice President of Jaguar North America. Jaguar is charting an exciting new path with the recent launch of the Jaguar F-TYPE and the introduction of the Jaguar XE, which completes our sedan line-up. We offer a more exclusive, distinct choice in the luxury car marketplace combining progressive British design, a high performance character and advanced aluminum technology.

Jaguar Naming Convention

In selecting the XE name, Jaguar retains its naming convention, joining the XF, XJ, and XK in the product line up. F-Type coupe and convertible models are also sold. Full product details will be released later this year just prior to production.

Jaguar Land Rover N.A. LLC US sales are up 12.6 percent year to date. Jaguar sales rose by 35.2 percent in Feb. 2014 alone, the same month when overall US sales were flat. Globally, Jaguar sales were up by 42 percent in 2013, based on 76,668 units sold, for its best year since 2005.

British automotive building is on a rebound and is expected to exceed the previous peak annual production of 1.72 million units in hit in 1972 by 2017 reports Reuters.
