More Than an Encore: Buick Encore GX

Buick supplies an encore to the Encore.



Nearly 90 percent of Buick sales are utility vehicles and that’s why names such sedan names as Century, Roadmaster, and LaCrosse have gone away. The only car model left is the Regal, represented by hatchback and wagon variants. But the Regal is in its last year as GM and the PSA Groupe (the new owner of Opel, the Regal’s supplier) go in a different direction. That leaves Buick with utility vehicles only. And with the transition to crossovers nearly complete, Buick introduced its fourth utility this year, the Encore GX.

The Encore GX is the encore to the Encore. No, it isn’t the same model. Instead, GM Korea developed a slightly larger model that sits between the Encore and the compact Envision. The Buick Enclave is this brand’s largest of four crossovers.


2020 Buick Encore GX Review


Buick prices the 2020 Encore from $24,100 to $28,500, plus a $995 destination charge. Three trims are available: Preferred, Select, and Essence. The Encore GX is a front-wheel-drive model that seats five. All-wheel drive is available.



Exterior

You can’t ignore the Encore when examining the Encore GX. That Buick is using the same name for different models is odd, but here we are.

The styling in the latest model seems more sophisticated with elegant headlamps, sophisticated front fascia cut-outs, beautiful profile curves, and better wheel packages. The optional black roof ($395) is a welcome touch.

Available on all trims is the Sport Touring Package (up to $1,100). This one brings in front and rear sport bumpers with red accents, a custom grille with red accents, bodyside body-color moldings, body-color rocker moldings, and 18-inch high-gloss wheels.

All color choices except for Summit White incur an extra charge, specifically $495 for metallic paint. Choose the White Frost Tricoat and the spend up is $1,095. You’ll pay extra for a power liftgate too ($520).



Interior

Slip behind the wheel of the Encore GX and the differences between this model and the Encore are apparent. Where the Encore is decidedly mainstream, the Encore GX has an improved appearance. Notably, the available black-and-beige two-tone color layout looks great and helps this model sport its premium mantle well.

Another notable advantage is the interior size. Though only 1.6 inches longer between the wheels, the cabin layout is smarter and supplies adequate space for rear-seating passengers. The Encore, also a five-seat model, is best for four occupants. But the Encore GX manages five seating positions better and has more legroom to show for it.

The GX’s front seats are average – more padding would help on those long trips, while large people may find them too narrow. We do like that the Buick’s controls are straightforward – neatly ordered and easy to discern. The carbon-fiber-like trim piece running across the dashboard is a nice touch.

Cloth seats with imitation leather trim come standard. Full leather is available. Move away from the standard Preferred model {it really isn’t preferable, in our opinion) and such features as a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and dual-zone climate control become available.



Tech

GM products typically perform quite well in all things technology. Buick is no exception.

The list of standard features includes an 8-inch diagonal touch-screen display, Bluetooth, wireless Android Auto smartphone compatibility, Apple CarPlay, USB ports, a six-speaker audio system, satellite radio, and 4G LTE wireless hotspot capability. OnStar and Buick Connected Services are also included.

Move up to the Select trim and Buick adds a remote vehicle starter system. Choose the Essence trim and a 120-volt power outlet is added to the rear of the center console.

If you want a navigation system, its bundled within an Experience Buick Package ($1,935) available on the Select and Essence trims. This package brings in a panoramic moonroof and an HD rear vision camera.

Safety

Buick does a noteworthy job with advanced driver-assist technologies with the 2020 Encore GX. That said, it can’t match Toyota in its list of standard equipment. Yet, we’re pleased that the Buick Driver Confidence package bundles automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, forward collision alert, following distance indicator, and lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning.

Move away from the Preferred trim and the Encore GX gains rear cross-traffic alert and lane change alert with side blind zone alert. Other available features such as adaptive cruise control, rear park assist, and a head-up display are bundled within an Advanced Technology Package ($1,935) on all but the base trim.



Performance

Buick supplies the Encore GX is two engine choices. Both are turbocharged and each one has just three cylinders. What’s interesting is that the engines are very close in size.

The first engine displaces 1.2 liters and makes 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This one works exclusively with a continuously variable transmission and is the only powertrain combination for the Preferred, a front-wheel-drive-only trim.

The second engine displaces 1.3 liters and makes 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. This engine also works with a CVT, but if you choose all-wheel drive, then a 9-speed automatic transmission comes in.

Our test Essence trim came with the upgraded engine and front-wheel drive. At first, we were skeptical that it would have little more than enough power to move the Encore GX at a steady clip. After all, we noted that the smaller Encore has a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Happily, we discovered that the Encore GX shows no lack of power. Indeed, from its step-off acceleration to passing power, this small crossover supplied ample gusto at all times. We were pleasantly surprised to find turbo lag was nearly imperceptible.

The Encore GX excels where it needs to – sprinting down the road, maneuvering tight spaces, and delivering a tight turning radius. It supplies a quiet and relatively comfortable ride. Well, at least relative to what other small crossovers muster.

Another feature of this small crossover is its efficiency, but you need to choose the larger engine to get it: 30 mpg. That’s a laudable return on fuel economy for any SUV. That it comes with a peppy engine and has a CVT that knows how to behave makes it worth considering. Save your cash and don’t opt for all-wheel drive, a part-time system that makes only a minor difference in this small model.

Finally, if you need to tow, the Encore GX has a 1,000-pound trailering capacity. While we don’t recommend regularly using this feature for a small SUV, it is there when properly equipped.



Competitive Set

Buick is GM’s premium brand, thus its models are situated somewhere between Chevrolet and Cadillac and alongside GMC in the scheme of things. That said, it’s the mainstream models that invite comparison, including the Mazda CX-30, Ford EcoSport, Honda HR-V, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Kona, and the Nissan Rogue Sport, to name a few.

None of those models (with the exception of the Mazda), however, match the level of premium features as the Buick, so comparing base models from Acura and Audi, for instance, can also prove helpful.


Our Recommendation


Our recommendation is the Select trim. We’d stay with the standard engine and eschew all-wheel drive. There’s bound to be discounting and other incentives available, therefore we recommend opting for the power liftgate and the Sport Touring Package.

Your final cost should come in around $27,000 and that’s a price point we think is quite reasonable for this small crossover utility vehicle.

Upscale SUV: 2019 Buick Envision

Crossover utility vehicles are the top choice for many consumers these days.
The Envision is the middle of three Buick SUV models.

Historically, Buick has served as GM’s premium brand, delivering a slew of car models of distinction. Today, Buick maintains its position between Chevrolet and Cadillac, but its model line and sales are skewed heavily toward utility vehicles.

The Buick marque has successfully adapted to changing consumer tastes, delivering three SUVs to consumers: Encore (subcompact), Envision (compact/midsize), and Enclave (midsize, three rows). Yes, the LaCrosse sedan and Regal hatchback and wagon remain, but the first model is in its final year, while the future of the Opel-supplied Regal is uncertain.

Auto Trends received a 2019 Buick Envision for testing in July, a model offering naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. Two transmission choices, front- and all-wheel drive, and five trims are available. The Envision rolled out in 2017 and is GM’s first made-in-China utility vehicle sold stateside.


Buick offers your choice of 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels.

2019 Buick Envision Overview

The 2019 Envision’s five trims include Envision ($31,995), Preferred ($35,250), Essence ($37,550), Premium I ($40,700), and Premium II ($43,600) trims. Add $1,195 for the destination charge. Choose the optional all-wheel drive, which is available in the Preferred and Essence trims and your cost rises by $3,255. The two top trims supply standard all-wheel drive.

Most models come with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which generates 197 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. This engine works with a six-speed automatic transmission. Also available is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 252 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Buick pairs this engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Competing models include the Volvo XC60, Acura RDX, Lincoln Corsair, and the Jaguar F-Pace. We also think a few of the top-trim versions of the Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Edge, and Nissan Murano are worth comparing.

A Matter of Style

From stem to stern, the 2019 Envision wears its Buick skin well. The front fascia is punctuated by the brand’s emblematic grille, which is offset by tear-dropped-shaped headlamps. A broad lower grille opening is honed in by available fog lamps.

Along the sides, the beltline rises to intersect with the gently falling roofline. Deep body sculpting and painted aluminum or alloy wheels impart gracefulness. From the rear, the clamshell liftgate features wraparound tail lamps. On some models diffuser-like trim with dual-exhaust ports raises the styling quotient.


Supportive, yet comfortable seats adorn the front. The split-opening center
storage compartment is where you’ll find the USB ports.

Inside, the cabin isn’t especially roomy, delivering sufficient room for four or five in a pinch. You’ll sit tightly in the back with two others if you dare. Otherwise, we recommend upgrading to the Enclave or moving over to the GMC Acadia, which is usually sold in the same showrooms as Buick.

The Envision features a layered dashboard, a broad center console, and sculptured door panels. You’ll find a variety of materials in place, including a long slab of imitation wood across the dashboard, with leather trim on some models. The brown and beige interior of our test model was certainly attractive, something we would expect Buick to deliver.

All models come with keyless entry and push-button start, a reclining and sliding second-row seat that also folds, full power accessories, power-controlled and heated front seats, and air conditioning. Cloth and imitation leather seats are standard. Some models feature leather seats. Other upgrades include a heated steering wheel and heated outboard rear seats.

Safety and Technology

Both the NHTSA and IIHS award the Envision with favorable crash test ratings. Indeed, the NHTSA assigns its top 5-star rating to this SUV.

But there is some disappointment with the Envision and that is its available driver-assist safety technology. Like other premium brands (not just GM), most of the advanced technologies available today cost more and are optional on the top trims only.

These features include adaptive cruise control and forward automatic braking, which are bundled with a surround vision camera as part of a $1,545 Driver Confidence Package. Mainstream brands such as Toyota offer many driver-assist features as standard equipment or at least deliver packages available across the model line.


The cabin features a mix of soft-touch, imitation wood and cloth or leather materials.

Other driver-assist features such as lane keep assist with lane departure warning and forward collision alert are standard beginning with the Premium I trim. The Premium II trim adds a head-up display.

Buick equips the 2019 Envision with a six-speaker audio system and an 8-inch touchscreen display. OnStar safety and security features, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility come standard. Most models have two front USB ports. Available equipment includes a Wi-Fi hotspot, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, and a pair of rear charging-only USB ports in the rear center console.

On the Road

Our test model had the turbocharged engine. It is offered in a variety of applications across various Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac models.

We were pleased by the amount of power supplied — from step-off acceleration to passing performance. With a little lag of note, this turbo spools quickly and convincingly. It offers an excellent substitute for a V6.

Steering is precise and evenly weighted. The Envision shines on the straightaways and holds its own on curvy roads. Braking is firm, the ride is comfortable and the interior is quiet — the latter trait is a Buick standard.


The available upgraded powertrain includes this turbo engine matched with a
smooth-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission.

Credit GM with building a wonderful and modern 9-speed automatic transmission. It works seamlessly in the background and is hardly noticeable, which is what customers want.

As for the base engine, we think it’ll suit the majority of shoppers, but it offers just a 2 mpg edge over the turbo. Thus, opting for more power supplies the performance benefit you may want and brings in all-wheel drive as well. The latter does, of course, supply an extra measure of stability when power is sent to all four corners.

Auto Trends Recommends

We think starting your search with the Preferred trim is the right way to go. This model adds a hands-free power liftgate and rear part assist. We also noticed that as of this writing, the Preferred trim carries a generous discount, lowering its price below the base model.

Choose all-wheel drive if you live where winter conditions prevail. Of course, if you want all of the available driver-assist technologies, you’ll have to pay for it by selecting the top-trim model and related safety package. But only choose this if you can negotiate by bringing your final cost close to $40,000.

Bye, Bye Buick Cascada!

The Buick Cascada is the brand’s first convertible since the Reatta.

Almost since its debut in 2016, the Buick Cascada seemed destined for early cancellation. For one, the market for cars, especially convertibles, was especially limited. Further, the Cascada was also the product of Opel, a company now no longer owned by GM, but by Groupe PSA, the maker of Peugeot, Citroen and other Euro-centric brands.

The competition was never fierce as few manufacturers participate in the drop-top arena. Early on, the Cascada battled with the now-discontinued Volkswagen Eos, along with the Audi A3 Cabriolet and BMW 2 Series convertible. Some might have thought the Cascada would fill the domestic void left by the Chrysler 200 Convertible, which was last produced in 2014. But its impact was negligible.

GM says that 2019 is the last model year for the Cascada. Slow sales are only part of the reason why this model is set for cancellation. We’ll uncover the reasons why and explore everything you need to know about the retiring Cascada:

1. From Opel, With Love

The Buick Cascada is also sold as the Opel Cascada throughout Europe. GM owned Opel from 1929 to 2017, and occasionally turned to its German subsidiary to supply models for the U.S. market.

We’ve seen Opel models sold as Saturns and even the Cadillac Catera utilized an Opel product. Buick has been the main beneficiary all along, especially in recent years as both the Cascada and Regal lines are courtesy of Opel.

Despite the end of Opel ownership, GM still relies on its former subsidiary and may continue to do so.

2. Just One Powertrain Choice

The front-wheel-drive Cascada comes with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine makes 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque.

It is also the only powertrain choice and not a very strong one, given this model’s two-ton weight. It earns 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, which isn’t especially inspiring given this vehicle’s size.

3. Mainstream, Premium or Luxury?

GM doesn’t call Buick its intermediate brand, although in many ways it is. Chevrolet and Cadillac serve as the bookends for GM, while Buick (and GMC) occupy the middle ground.

The Cascada’s handsome exterior and quiet cabin with the roof up are two of its strong suits as well as its long list of standard features. But the cabin seems cluttered, sits just four people, and this Buick lacks certain advanced driver-assist features, including automatic emergency braking.

4. One of three Buick car models.

Take a look at Buick and you’ll find Encore, Envision, and Enclave crossover utility vehicles. Together, these three models comprise more than two-thirds of the brand’s sales.

That leaves three Buick car models to fill out the product line. Besides the Cascada and Regal, Buick sells the large LaCrosse sedan, and that model will come to an end before 2019 closes. Sales fell by nearly 23 percent last year, with just over 15,000 units sold. Sales increased by about 22 percent in 2018 as Buick rolled out new designs.

Interestingly, the Regal is also supplied by Opel, but will likely live on. Currently, Buick offers this midsize model in sportback and wagon versions, the latter similar to the crossover designs that have captured consumer interest.

5. Tepid sales, at best.

In 2018, Buick sold just 4,628 Cascada units, down from 5,595 a year earlier. In its first year, Cascada sales tallied 7,153 units.

The sales drop isn’t surprising as it follows a consumer-wide trend away from car models.

6. Opel cancels the Cascada.

GM may be canceling the Cascada, but it starts with Opel, which markets the model under the same name. Opel builds the Cascada at a factory in Poland and says that it is ending production there in response to slow and declining sales.

Thus, the Cascada cancellation is ultimately a PSA Groupe decision, not GM. Still, this gives GM an easy “out” as they depart the segment.

The China Connection

With the Opel connection shrinking, where will Buick turn for future models? Likely, they’ll continue to offer their share of GM-derived models that they share with Chevrolet and GMC.

But, they have another source that already supplies the Envision: its China operation. A cursory look at the brand’s China lineup shows hatchbacks, sedans, and crossovers, along with vans. Should Buick need additional product going forward, it may tap its China operation to supply the same. Of course, tariffs and geopolitical tensions may have some say in limiting that.

Buick Envision Debuts With No Fanfare

The made-in-China Envision is now on sale in North America.

The Buick Envision has arrived, the third crossover in this tri-shield brand’s portfolio. Only you wouldn’t know that without closely examining US auto sales data for May 2016.

Tucked within that information are the 89 Envisions sold in the US last month. As promised, Buick said the Envision would go on sale in the second quarter of 2016. However, instead of the customary fanfare accompanied by TV ads and a media push, the Envision has quietly gone on sale.

Political Posturing and a New Crossover

Why the quiet debut? Buick told Automotive News the Envisions now on sale are high-trim level 2016s. In a few months, the full range of Envisions will be made available and sold as 2017s. Its an unusual approach, but it may signal an internal decision to avoid political theater.

Indeed, the Buick Envision is made in China and it might receive unwanted attention from the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump. Trump has harshly criticized US manufacturers for shipping jobs overseas or importing products that could just as easily be built by Americans.

Just last week Trump criticized the PGA Tour for its decision to move a tournament from the US to Mexico. The WGC-Cadillac Championship has been played at the Trump National Doral near Miami and will shift to Mexico beginning in 2017. Cadillac’s sponsorship was ending and will be replaced by Grupo Salinas, an assemblage of media companies.

NAFTA and Imports

Notably, Cadillac and Buick are GM brands and just this week Trump blasted the automaker for its investment in Mexico. GM now joins the Ford Motor Company, Carrier and Nabisco, as companies the presidential candidate has attacked.

While campaigning, Trump has suggested a 35 percent tariff on vehicles imported from Mexico. Of course, that recommendation ignores NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement), a trilateral agreement the US made with Canada and Mexico to do away with numerous tariffs.

2016/2017 Buick Envision

Political posturing aside, the Chinese-made Buick Envision fills an important hole in the Buick product line. Prior to its arrival, Buick offered the subcompact Encore and midsize Enclave crossovers. The Envision provides a natural step in the product line for Buick customers.

Visit the Buick.com website today and you’ll find no information about the Envision on its home page. Click the “All Vehicles” tab and a model list is shown. Cast your eyes on the “SUVs” category and you’ll spot the 2016 Envision tucked neatly between the 2016 Encore and the 2016 Enclave.

You’ll also spot a sky-high price for the Envision, starting at $42,070 or $3,005 higher than the Enclave. Click the “explore” tab, then “view specs” and you’ll find two trim levels featured. Both are fully-loaded all-wheel drive versions, the only models marketed in the 2016 model year.

Head back to the “all vehicles” tab and you’ll spot the 2017 Envision and a note explaining its fall 2016 availability. Click “explore” and a list of five trim levels will appear. The base price for the standard Envision is $34,990 with Preferred ($36,795), Essence ($38,645), Premium ($43,245), and Premium II ($45,885) models offered.

Front-wheel drive and a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine are standard. All-wheel drive or active twin-clutch all-wheel drive are available. A turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine is offered with the two top trims only.

The Buick Product Line

Buick’s model line is expanding and they’re using cars built in Michigan, Ontario, Kanas, and China to draw customers to the tri-shield brand. It is doubtful whether most customers care where their cars are built.

And as for American jobs, dealer and service level positions are keeping people employed and tax coffers are replenished no matter where the new car was manufactured.

No New Buick Verano for US Market

Buick’s entry-level model is on its way out.

An all-new Buick Verano is currently being marketed in China, but plans for the second-generation compact premium sedan do not include offering it in the North American market.

Automotive News reports that the entry-level sedan will not be renewed after the 2017 model year, leaving Buick’s US operation with just two sedans, a convertible, and a bevy of SUVs in the brand’s portfolio.

New Cruze, No New Verano

The front-wheel drive Buick Verano is underpinned by the same platform powering the Chevrolet Cruze, itself updated this year. The Verano’s main competitors are the Acura ILX and Lexus IS 250, and nearly 32,000 American consumers bought the small Buick last year.

Buick VeranoNevertheless, Buick sees its future following the consumer shift to SUVs, and is bringing the compact Envision SUV from China to augment the subcompact Encore and the midsize, three-row Enclave SUVs. Further, because most Buick and GMC dealers are sold under one roof, customers also have easy access to two lines of pickup trucks as well as four lines of GMC SUVs.

With customers no longer having access to the Verano, Buick dealers will have their work cut out for them when leases renew and owners trade in. Entry-level Buick shoppers may be redirected to the tiny Encore or the midsize Envision, the latter expected to generate 50,000 sales per year. Come 2018, the smallest sedan will be the Regal. The Buick Cascada is similarly sized, but it is a niche 2+2 convertible.

Wholesale Shift to Trucks & SUVs

GM’s decision to walk away from the Verano follows April’s sales figures release. Last month, Verano sales fell by 18.8 percent and are down by 11.7 percent through the first four months of this year. Sales of its large LaCrosse sedan are down by 21.7 percent, but Regal volume is up by 13.5 percent.

Buick’s strength remains in SUVs as the Encore is by far its best selling model, followed by the Enclave. Looking forward, Buick expects SUVs to generate 70 percent of its volume, enabling the brand to meet customer demand, but not without some risk.

That risk is based largely on fuel prices, what plays a significant role in consumer purchase decisions. When fuel prices are high, new car buyers avoid large SUVs and consider smaller models, including compact cars.

Sales Mix Among American Manufacturers

Indeed, among the traditional American manufacturers — GM, Ford and Fiat Chrysler (FCA)— car sales fell by 11 percent in 2015, while demand for pickup trucks and SUVs surged by 15 percent according to the International Business Times.

In 2015, FCA truck/SUV sales surged by 22 percent, while car sales plunged by 19 percent. GM, including Buick, realized a 16 percent increase in truck/SUV sales to a 14 percent drop in car sales. Ford has the narrowest change of all as truck/SUV sales rose by 8.3 percent, while car sales fell narrowly by 0.9 percent.

The Fuel Price Factor

In recent months, fuel prices have slowly, but steadily risen. That ascent may be seasonal as gas prices routinely rise as the summer driving season begins. The US Energy Information Administration has forecast an average price of $2.04 per gallon for the summer driving season (April-through-September) compared with $2.63 per gallon last year.

Both numbers are far lower than the $4.11 per gallon peak reached in July 2008. By January 2009 fuel prices averaged $1.84 per gallon, rising and falling since.

A big advantage for Buick lies in its ability to shift products quickly, if needed. Given that the second-generation Verano is sold in China, readying that model for the US market shouldn’t take long if consumer trends shift. That means we may not have seen the last of Buick’s smallest model as well as perhaps an all-new flagship sedan based on the Avenir concept.

Avenir Concept Leads to New Buick Design Fascia

The Avenir concept will be reflected in the next generation LaCrosse grille.

Buick will soon sport a new face. And that front fascia will be based on none other than the Buick Avenir concept, a large rear-wheel drive vehicle that itself has not been officially promised.

On Tuesday, Buick disclosed and Automotive News reported that the next generation Buick LaCrosse — due out in the second half of next year for the 2017 model year — will inherit the Avenir’s design. Further, that look will be fan out across the entire Buick line by 2018, creating a unified visage that is at once cutting edge as it is upscale.

The Avenir’s fascia is not a huge departure from the current Buick waterfall grille. But it provides an emblematic look with spears jutting out on both sides of the upper portion of the brand’s trishield insignia. Modifications to the front lighting assembly would include more forceful, yet elegant LED daytime running lights. Notably, the overall countenance would offer a broader presentation.

Buick showcased the Avenir at the last round of North American auto shows. That model was shown near or alongside the 1954 Buick Wildcat II concept, the vehicle from which the Avenir’s designers took inspiration.

“The Avenir concept shattered expectations of what a Buick could be and the 2017 LaCrosse promises to do the same,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Buick. “Its expressive design represents a break from convention and highlights the progressiveness in all new Buick models.”

Buick plans to showcase the next generation LaCrosse at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November. The company says that the new flagship will ride on an all-new chassis, representing the latest rendition of the GM’s Epsilon platform. That platform also underpins the Buick Regal as well as the Chevrolet Malibu and the Opel Insignia; all three models are midsize sedans.

New technologies will complement the updated interpretation. For starters, Buick has promised a five-link rear suspension, claiming that it will provide a “more responsive ride.” Additionally, Buick noted that the suspension is not offered on the Lexus ES. The ES and LaCrosse battle it out for the same customers.

Other changes will likely include an updated telematics system, new audio system choices, and additional safety features. The 2016 edition already has such state-of-the-art features as Apple CarPlay, available 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot, and several collision-avoidance technologies.

Likely, front-wheel drive will remain standard; all-wheel drive will be available; and an eight-speed automatic transmission should debut. Engine choices will be announced at the auto show.

The next generation Buick LaCrosse will chase the Buick Cascada to the market, the latter a 2+2 convertible based on an Opel product with the same model name. The LaCrosse will itself be followed by the next generation Verano compact sedan and then an all-new Enclave crossover.

Two additional products might also be added to Buick’s line up. In the short term, a smaller crossover SUV may slot between the diminutive Encore and the glamorous Enclave. That SUV is known as the Buick Envision, a model sold in China and one that GM would like to import to the US. However, GM must get past union objections — the new SUV might be a “go” once a new labor agreement has been enacted this fall.

The other product would be based on the Opel Adam, a sporty three-door minicar. The Adam’s advent, if it ever happens, would likely be a few model years out, and would most likely arrive only after Buick has revised the balance of its model line.

The upcoming changes to Buick should help keep this brand maintain its part of the 1-2 luxury punch its shares with Cadillac. GM has positioned Buick to go after the lower end of the luxury market, with Lincoln, Acura, Infiniti and select Lexus products in mind. Meanwhile, Cadillac is poised to battle it out with the German brands, including Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Together, the two brands account for more than 400,000 premium and luxury sales in the US each year, with room for further growth.

Tiny Crossover Segment Poised to Explode

It wasn’t all that long ago when Nissan introduced its Juke crossover, what had some analysts scratching their heads in wonder. Sure, the styling itself was polarizing, but the segment the diminutive Nissan occupied was virtually nonexistent. Until now.

One year after the Juke’s 2011 arrival, Chevrolet introduced the fleet-only Captiva. You could rent it, but you could not buy it. At least not new.

The following year, an upscale Buick Encore rolled out and was quickly embraced by consumers. As interest in the smallest of all crossovers grew, other manufacturers were paying close attention and began planning their own responses.

The subcompact SUV segment is now poised to explode as more manufacturers have jumped in and others are expected to follow. Indeed, just this spring we saw the introduction of the Jeep Renegade, Fiat 500X and the Honda HR-V. These three models will soon be joined by the Mazda CX-3 and the Chevrolet Trax, but the market expansion won’t end there.

New Crossover Models on the Way

Yesterday, Auto Trends mentioned one such model as a possible entrant — the Ford EcoSport — a vehicle currently built in India and under consideration for US export by fall 2016. Yet another model, the Hyundai Creta, is also under consideration with the Korean manufacturer providing a sketch recently to show what it might look like.

Absent in all this is Toyota, but not for long. Quite frankly, the world’s largest automaker simply won’t sit on the sidelines for much longer. Except for sport coupes such as the Dodge Challenger, Toyota competes in every segment.

And with Nissan readying an all-new Juke set to arrive sometime in 2016, Toyota’s absence should come to an end sooner rather than later. As of this publication, Toyota is mum about its plans. With this in mind, keep an eye on the auto show circuit come fall — will it be a Toyota-derived product or will the automaker tap its Mazda partner to supply a new model?

Value in the Tiny Crossover Segment

Chevrolet TraxThere is a good reason why the subcompact crossover SUV market is booming. These vehicles are built on car platforms that normally retail for $15,000 on up. At prices that begin just below $20,000 and push up to $25,000, manufacturers are able to squeeze more profits from them. And as consumers continue to switch from cars to SUVs, the more expensive crossovers simply are replacing lower profit volume models lost elsewhere.

Likely, the segment is no flash in the pan either. May 2015 sales of the aged Nissan Juke came in at 2,625 units, down 31 percent for the month. However, sales of the new models got off to a strong start. For instance, 6,381 units of the Honda HR-V were delivered in its first month of availability. Furthermore, Jeep sold 4,416 Renegades and Chevrolet sold 5,707 of its Trax models according to Good Car Bad Car.

Honda seems poised to control the segment as it currently does with its compact CR-V. The new HR-V is priced from $19,115 and puts a big emphasis on versatility and technology. All models come with LED brake lights, heated side mirrors, roof rails and keyless entry.

A long list of comfort and convenience features are included, such as: power accessories, cruise control, a tilt and telescopic steering column, map lights, an LED pocket light, two 12-volt, and a cargo area light. All HR-V models come with Bluetooth and a USB audio interface. Both the EX and EX-L editions add a 180-watt, 6-speaker audio system with Pandora. the EX-L NAVI edition brings in navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio and HD radio.

Equipped, Not Stripped

honda-hr-vCompeting models are also generous with amenities, ensuring that all such vehicles come equipped, not stripped. Moreover, interior room is large enough to hold five and storage capacity is upwards of 60 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. These models are likely to be perceived as relative bargains and in a market where the average cost of a new car is approaching $33,000, the segment has its share of bargains.

One important factor that isn’t getting much attention in these days of lower fuel prices is gas mileage. For instance, the Mazda CX-3 with two-wheel drive is EPA-rated at 29 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. That number compares favorably with the small cars that consumers have long favored and could very well ensure this segment’s success once gas prices return to the previous highs experienced just a few years ago.

About the 2015 Chevrolet Trax

The subcompact sport utility vehicle segment is expanding rapidly as new products from Honda, Fiat, Jeep and Mazda enter the fray. Joining the current Buick Encore and Nissan Juke is another small SUV, the Chevrolet Trax, a five-passenger model that gives the bow-tie brand its fifth utility vehicle.

The 2015 Chevrolet Trax is just now entering showrooms, the third crossover and fifth overall utility vehicle for GM’s headmost brand. The Trax arrives just as the subcompact SUV segment receives an infusion of new products, including the Honda HR-V and the Fiat 500X.

Pricing Essentials and Strategy

The Chevrolet Trax is based on the Buick Encore, a premium model with the price and content to go with it. To effectively compete in a segment where a base price of $20,000 will be common, GM established a $20,120 base price for the Trax or $20,995 once the delivery charge is included.

This front-wheel-drive model is also available in all-wheel drive and is sold in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels. All-wheel drive adds $1,500 to the price. Chevrolet says that the Trax has the utility of an SUV and the agility of a compact car. Likely, that statement is true because it aligns with my impressions of the similar Buick Encore. Stay tuned for a hands-on review once one passes through my press fleet rotation.

For a small vehicle, there is a lot to discuss beyond its standard 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Indeed, its standard Chevrolet MyLine infotainment system, 7-inch diagonal screen, Wi-Fi hotspot, standard rear view camera, and standard 10 airbags should pique the interest of the intrepid shopper.

Room for Five; Compartments Galore

Technically, the Chevrolet Trax seats five, but is best suited for four. Its 60-40 spilt, flat-folding rear seat and fold-flat front passenger seat to enable owners to maximize storage space. Chevrolet is quick to note that the Trax’ storage space eclipses the Nissan Juke and is in line with competitors, such as the Jeep Renegade and Kia’s Soul. By extension, you can associate the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen with this segment, a wagon-like model with its own utility vehicle inclinations.

SUVs typically have multiple storage compartments, including a sundry of nooks, crannies and crevices. The Chevrolet Trax does not disappoint in this department as it has 15 of them, including one to the left of the steering wheel and a pair encompassing the center stack. Furthermore, double slots in all four doors run up that tally nicely.

One technological feature that is sure to please beyond the Wi-Fi hotspot is Siri Eyes. Siri Eyes Free works with compatible iPhones and like devices to augment connectivity, through voice control. Specifically, drivers can keep their phones stored and their hands on the wheel, effectively eliminating a distraction point. To point out, Chevrolet will be the only subcompact SUV to offer this feature.

A Profusion of Safety Components

Speaking of safety, the Chevrolet Trax comes with driver and front passenger knee airbags as well as the segment’s only rear-seat-mounted thorax airbags. Furthermore, the expected and mandated safety features common to all vehicles — such as anti-lock brakes, stability control, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist — are present. This model also comes with cornering brake control; rear park assist is standard on the LTZ edition and is available with the LT.

Will buyers make the trek to the Chevy Trax? That’s no slam dunk considering the competition that is also reaching the segment now and in the coming months. At the same time, the Trax will have some in-house competition from the Buick Encore while some buyers may simply prefer the capaciousness of the Equinox, the previous of the smallest utility vehicles in the Chevrolet portfolio.

Chevrolet Trax Makes Five Chevy Utility Vehicles

And then there were five. With the introduction of the Chevrolet Trax at the New York International Auto Show last week, the bow-tie brand will soon have five utility vehicles for customer perusal.

The Chevy Trax is a subcompact model that has been sold in Canada since 2012 and is a sibling to the Buick Encore. Yes, badge engineering hasn’t died and Chevrolet is getting a new model to slot below the Equinox. The three other Chevrolet utility vehicles are the Traverse, Tahoe and Suburban.

Competing Models Force Chevrolet’s Hand?

Bringing the Trax stateside makes sense as the crossover utility vehicle market continues to grow. Honda plans to introduce the HR-V next winter, Jeep is readying the Renegade, while Nissan already has the Juke.

Ford sells the EcoSport in India and reportedly is studying whether to offer a subcompact model for the US market too. Ford sells six utility vehicles in the US and won’t allow Chevrolet to get the upper hand.

“Trax offers customers another option in the Chevrolet family and will be a strong competitor in the emerging small-SUV market, which is expected to grow more than 80 percent by 2016, said Alan Batey, General Motors senior vice president, Global Chevrolet. “Trax also leverages our global resources and builds on Chevrolet’s strong SUV heritage.”

Expected to arrive in early 2015, the Chevrolet Trax will be powered by the same 1.4-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine that powers the Buick Encore. it will be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. That engine makes 138 horsepower and 148 foot-pounds of torque and can also be found underneath the hood of select Chevrolet Sonic and Cruze models.

Standard and Available Equipment

With room for up to five, the 2015 Chevrolet Trax will offer standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive. This model will also feature electric power steering, the latest OnStar and Chevrolet MyLink technologies, 10 airbags, numerous storage compartments, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and available keyless entry with remote start.

Pricing will be announced closer to its release, but a base model could come in just below $20,000. With the Equinox currently priced from $24,440 it will be interesting to see how GM determines pricing. With the Jeep Renegade arriving just ahead of the Trax you’ll likely see that pricing set accordingly.

Small Vehicles Added

Besides the Trax, Chevrolet has been building out its smaller vehicle inventory with a variety of products. Its car line now includes the Spark (mini), Sonic (subcompact) and Cruze (compact) and it will soon add the City Express van to its line up courtesy of Nissan.

Although the returning Colorado pickup truck is not a compact model, it comes in considerably lighter than the Silverado, representing one of only three small pickup truck lines sold in America (Toyota and Nissan represent the other two).

It isn’t too often that the same model shows up in my driveway within three or four months, but when one does there is usually a different engine or drivetrain layout that sets these vehicles apart. In the case of the Buick Encore, it was a model year change that made the difference for this tiny crossover utility vehicle, a 2014 front-wheel drive edition dressed in Premium group garb.

The 2014 Buick Encore is sold in a standard Encore group package ($24,160), and also offers Convenience ($25,785), Leather ($27,485), and Premium ($28,195) group packages. As you move up in each package level, the amenities offered in the lower-level packages are included as well. The only extra found in the tested model was the $795 audio with navigation system package. Choose all-wheel drive and your base price increases by $1,500 across the board. Fully loaded, this model will cost you north of $30,000.

The base sticker price for the 2014 Buick Encore is $960 above the 2013 model with each package priced about $800 higher too. Choose any package and you’ll get the two new safety features added this year: rear cross traffic alert and side blind zone alert, features that are typically found in vehicles in this class.

And that class is composed of small, premium crossover utility vehicles — a segment that has seen tremendous growth in recent years. Models nearest in size to the Buick Encore include the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3; Buick also targets buyers of the Mini Countryman and Volkswagen Tiguan when shopping this model.

A Fresh Perspective: 2014 Buick Encore

Sometimes the second time around with a similar vehicle gives you a fresh perspective on what you’re driving. I will concur with this thinking too as I need to stress that the “luxury” appellation that Buick ascribes to this model may disappoint some shoppers. If you are fine with molded plastic across the dashboard and brightwork elsewhere, then you won’t be disappointed. Then again, Buick offsets these deficiencies with a cabin that is as quiet as you can get and a ride that is surprisingly comfortable for this vehicle’s small footprint.

The outside of the Encore wears the familiar Buick grin with the tri-shield logo centered on the waterfall grille. The Premium group brings in 18-inch aluminum wheels set within Continental all-season tires, front fog lamps, a roof rack with side rails, and power heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators. All models have ventiport trim embellishments on the hood — count me among those who wish Buick used the real thing or simply did away with the decorations.

Inside, the Encore offers seating for five with bucket seats up front and a 60/40 split-bench seat in the rear. Don’t buy this vehicle if you need true room for three in the back as you will find it a tight side-by-side squeeze and an unbearable one at that for anything longer than a trip across town.

All models are equipped with ambient lighting, air conditioning, electronic cruise control, a tilt steering wheel column, a power driver’s seat with lumbar support, power accessories, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, ambient lighting, dual glove boxes, a rear cargo cover, and a rearview camera. The Premium group brings in leather-appointed seating up front, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, RainSense wipers, a rear cargo net, a cargo mat, and a 7-speaker Bose audio system. An OnStar subscription is included; Buick IntelliLink is the infotainment system that manages it all. As equipped, a SiriusXM satellite radio subscription is also included — I cannot imagine buying a car these days without opting for this feature.

Ample Storage Compartments

Storage is plentiful with the Encore. Besides the glove boxes, there is a storage compartment between the front seats, within each door and to the left of the steering wheel. There are two cup holders up front and two are found in the back by dropping down the center seat compartment.

2014 Buick Encore Powertrain: One Choice

You get one engine and transmission choice with the Buick Encore: a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Under normal driving conditions this combination is sufficient for the Encore, but it strains when when four people are present and when the vehicle is climbing. When I pushed the Encore, I kept thinking that a turbocharged engine displacing at about 1.8 liters might be better suited for this CUV. Ideally, the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine found in other Buick models would work best and serve up a truly robust powertrain.

Buick uses what they call “variable-effort” electric steering to help give this CUV a tight turning radius. I wouldn’t expect anything less considering the Encore’s size. Braking is good with its disc brakes handling sudden stops with ease. The 2014 Buick Encore is outfitted with 10 standard airbags including driver and front passenger knee airbags.

The Buick Encore may be ideal for the individual buyer or a couple. You get nearly 50 cubic feet of rear storage space by folding forward the seat cushion portion of the back seat and then the back seat itself. But, you should also know that to get the rear seat to fold flat, you’ll have to move the front seats forward by several inches. This won’t work for a tall driver — I’m nearly 6-feet tall and it didn’t work for me.

GMC Terrain Denali Considerations

So, if the Buick Encore doesn’t work for you, take heart: most Buick and GMC dealers are under one roof. That means the GMC Terrain is the next largest CUV in the showroom and gets 32 mpg on the highway, just 1 mpg below the Encore. Choose the Denali package and you’ll pay about $3,000 more for the Terrain than the Encore, but you will get a much more roomier cabin, a robust 2.4-liter four cylinder engine and a leather interior. And that isn’t a bad compromise when considering premium level small CUVs.
