BUICK REGAL GS

Buick 2020: What’s New

February 26, 2020 by admin 2 Comments

This Buick Encore GX is the latest model for GM’s premium brand.

Go to Specifications: Encore | Envision | Enclave | Regal GS | Regal TourX

The Buick brand has enjoyed huge success in the U.S. and abroad, but particularly in China where its sales are six times that of the U.S. In the domestic market, Buick sales have doubled over the past decade, benefitting from new products, including high-demand utility vehicles.

On face value, the Buick brand should remain strong, but China is a huge concern, especially as that nation grapples with the coronavirus (COVID-19), which has killed thousands and has essentially shut down the consumer market. If the virus isn’t soon contained, the outlook for Buick, GM, and all of the automotive world will certainly be gravely affected.

We can’t know the future, but we can surmise that under the right conditions, the Buick brand will continue to set itself apart from the other GM brands. That said, its partner brand, GMC, remains the larger of the two and will likely continue to benefit from more model offerings going forward, including its Hummer line of electric vehicles.

Buick Now and Later

Here is what’s new with Buick for 2020 and what we can expect looking forward.

The LaCrosse sedan is discontinued. Sedan sales are plummeting the world over, but especially in the U.S. For Buick, its large LaCrosse sedan has gone away as customers continue to shift to crossovers, including the Enclave.

Speaking of the Enclave, a new Sport Touring Package rolls out. This package features a unique sport grille with body-color surround and 20-inch bright machined aluminum wheels with contrasting Satin Graphite pockets. It’s available on the Enclave Essence trim level.

An all-new Encore GX model arrives. Not to be confused with the Encore, the Encore GX is an all-new model, which slots between the Encore and Envision. Arriving this spring, the Korean-built Encore GX gives buyers a choice of two turbocharged three-cylinder engines. It comes packed with tech and safety features and should target BMW X2 shoppers. It’s also about the same size as the Mazda CX-30.

Future model changes on tap. We expect the Regal models will go away after this year, leaving Buick with an all-SUV lineup. One of the next models planned is the Buick Enspire, a crossover based on the Cadillac XT4, and pricier than the Buick Envision. We may see both hybrid and full-electric versions at some point, but we expect its U.S. debut will be moved back to 2021. The reason? This made-in-China coupe-like SUV will likely encounter delays related to COVID-19 manufacturing idleness.

Buick and Other GM Brands

Buick’s survival in a shrinking GM universe is remarkable. Oldsmobile was canceled earlier this century, followed by Saturn, Saab, Pontiac, and Hummer. Later, GM sold Vauxhall and Opel to Peugeot, and plans to shut down Holden in 2021. That leaves Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac to hold the GM banner, with only Chevrolet having anything resembling a global presence.

Volkswagen Arteon:
CC Spiritual Successor

July 8, 2019 by admin 4 Comments

2019 Volkswagen Arteon.

You may count yourself among the consumers who have shifted their new vehicle purchase decisions from cars to utility vehicles, but that isn’t stopping some manufacturers from offering new or updated car models. Indeed, Volkswagen continues to double down with its Golf, Jetta, and Passat lines, even as sales skew more toward its Tiguan and Atlas SUVs.

New for 2019 is yet another model name: the Volkswagen Arteon. This model arrives just as VW says good-bye again to the Beetle. But unlike the Beetle, the Arteon slots at the top of the brand’s model line, delivering premium features in an unlikely liftback design.

Most certainly, the Volkswagen Arteon is not like any other current VW model. Yet, it is what VW calls the “spiritual successor” of the retired CC, a coupe-like sedan sold from 2010 to 2017. Like the CC, the Arteon is about the size of the Passat midsize sedan. Unlike the CC, this one offers generous rear storage space and a much more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Importantly, the Arteon does something we haven’t seen in a Volkswagen in many years, at least not since the opulent Phaeton left our shores in 2006: it delivers Audi-like looks and premium features, and does so at a reasonable cost.

2019 Volkswagen Arteon Overview

The 2019 VW Arteon comes with standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. All models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Three trim levels are available: SE ($35,845), SEL ($39,995), and SEL Premium R-Line ($46,210). Add $1,800 for Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system on the SE. Upgrading to all-wheel drive on the SEL also brings in R-Line trim. The cost here is $43,560. A $995 destination charge is extra. As for the top-trim model, it comes with standard all-wheel drive.

Wheels as large as 20 inches grace the 2019 VW Arteon.

A Matter of Style

The Volkswagen Arteon sits on the brand’s modular architecture, which does a number of things, including supplying customized sizing. The Arteon is about the size of a Passat, delivering a slightly longer wheelbase, while measuring just a half-inch longer overall. The Arteon is wider and sits lower than the Passat, and has slightly less passenger volume, but it comes with a huge rear storage compartment.

Indeed, that storage area is the difference maker here as it supplies 27.2 cubic feet of standard space or 55 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. On the other hand, the Passat has a traditional trunk measuring 15.9 cubic feet. That’s still large, but in comparison, the Arteon’s space is cavernous — not unlike a utility vehicle.

It was “smitten at first sight” when we cast our eyes on the Arteon. Its long, sleek body suggests a sedan from the front and sides, but it is only when you concentrate on the rear that it is evident this vehicle is something else. In particular, the long and wide rear window is the chief indicator that this car finishes with a liftgate, delivering what the manufacturer calls a fastback design.

And what does the term “fastback” remind you of? Immediately, I thought of Audi, which is the Volkswagen Group’s top-selling luxury marque. Audi calls its coupe-like sedans “sportbacks,” but the design elements are the same. The Arteon has a canvas that takes elements from the Audi A5 Sportback and A7. Actually, the layout is closer to the A7, while costing half as much.

The bold front fascia makes an immediate luxurious and sporty presence on the Arteon. A broad grille with multiple horizontal slots is honed in by stately headlamps. LED accent lights add distinction, while huge cutouts offset the lower grille. Tasteful character lines run from the top of the grille to the windshield. The hood itself has a near clamshell look.

From the sides, the Arteon’s visage is peppered with chrome trim and includes stylish wheels, measuring as large as 20 inches on some trims. A long roofline gradually drops to the rear deck, forming the liftgate design. From the rear, the fascia features a built-in spoiler, which adds a sporty touch. Wide and narrow wraparound tail lamps, reflector lights, and dual exhaust tips complete the presentation.

A roomy interior marks the VW Arteon. (Photo copyright Volkswagen Group).

Inside, the Arteon is a mixed bag. We give this vehicle high marks for its roomy interior, especially with its large rear-seat compartment. That space reminded us of the room available in the Toyota Avalon. Even so, if you’re taller than six feet, headroom is constrained by the sloping roof.

Volkswagen dresses the Arteon in a variety of materials, including available Nappa leather and padding. Still, hard plastics are found here and there — on the center stack and at the base the dashboard. The knobs and switches are what you’d find in most other mainstream models.

Safety & Technology

As for safety features, the 2019 Arteon has standard forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring. You’ll also find side assist, rear traffic alert, and the now mandated rearview camera.

Adaptive cruise control with stop and go is standard beginning with the SEL trim. Features such as lane keeping system, parking steering assist, and an overhead view camera, are only available on the top-trim SEL Premium model.

The Arteon’s interior features upscale and mainstream materials. (Photo copyright Volkswagen Group).

On the tech front, Volkswagen supplies the Arteon with an 8-inch touchscreen display. An 8-speaker audio system, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and two USB ports are standard. Smartphone connectivity via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are possible through the standard VW Car-Net app suite.

Beginning with the SEL trim, VW adds a digital cockpit, navigation, and a security system. The SEL Premium model supplies a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound package.

On the Road

We’re pleased Volkswagen supplies Audi’s version of the company’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the Arteon. This same-sized engine powers the Passat, but delivers just 184 horsepower to the 268 horsepower in the Arteon. Credit larger turbos and special tuning for producing more power in the latter. Also, the Passat has a six-speed automatic transmission, while the Arteon has an eight-speed.

The extra performance certainly comes in handy, although step-off power is only modest. Once the turbos spool, the Arteon delivers V6-like power and the transmission complies by shifting smoothly. In sport mode, the steering, suspension and transmission sharpen, delivering an improved connection to the road. The available 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system found in our test model keeps this four-door planted and reminds us of Audi’s quattro system. That’s especially helpful on slippery and twisty roads, where extra grip is needed.

This TSI engine produces 268 horsepower. (Photo copyright Volkswagen Group.)

There is an important weight distinction between the Passat and Arteon, something that’s noticeable after a while. The front-wheel-drive Arteon weighs 370 pounds more than the Passat. With 4MOTION, the weight difference is 569 pounds. Drive these models back to back and I think you’ll detect the difference. Again, the more powerful engine in the Arteon certainly helps.

Our R-Line test model has the sporty looks with big 20-inch tires its signature design element. We’d only wish the 3.6-liter V6 now offered only in the Atlas SUV was present here and specially tuned to deliver at least 300 horsepower — in the Atlas, it delivers a modest 276 horsepower. An optional V6 would give the Arteon the power edge it needs to take on the Buick Regal GS and the Kia Stinger GT, which are two other midsize liftgate models.

Auto Trends Recommends

An Arteon in SEL trim supplies many of the upgrades shoppers want, including Nappa leather (imitation leather is standard) seats, a panoramic sunroof, and adaptive cruise control, among other features. We prefer all-wheel drive and strongly recommend it to customers living in wintry areas.

Opt for the R-Line trim, available across the model line, and it is a $1,265 upgrade ($1,765 with 20-inch wheels). This trim brings in gloss black trim, paddle shifters, contrast stitching, a black headliner, and stainless steel door sills and pedal caps. Thus, an SEL model with 4MOTION and R-Line trim will cost around $45,000.

Of course, if your budget is limited, then a Passat is a wise alternative. Indeed, a well-equipped model costs about $30,000, which is in line with other mainstream sedans, including the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and Hyundai Sonata.

The liftgate design opens to a huge storage compartment.

Sportback Performance: Buick Regal GS

March 19, 2019 by admin

2019 Buick Regal GS
The latest Buick Regal line is all-new as of 2018 and includes this GS model.

Buick’s identity in the GM fold places this brand squarely between Chevrolet and Cadillac. It shares this position with GMC, as the two brands are typically sold under the same roof.

The Buick brand has successfully made its appeal to younger buyers and is no longer considered an “old people’s brand.” Its strongest market by far is China, which is why Buick is around today and not Pontiac. Still, GM’s middle brand has its work cut out for itself as it builds more utility vehicles and drops car models as consumer tastes shift.

One car model that is still around is the Buick Regal. It remains one of Buick’s most recognized names, with the earliest models dating to the early 1970s. Those rear-wheel-drive models were the midsize coupes and sedans of that era and later included a wagon. Later models switched to front-wheel drive before the nameplate was canceled in 2004.

Buick resurrected the Regal in 2011, relying on GM’s Opel division to supply it with a four-door sedan. For seven model years, the Regal brought premium features to the midsize sedan segment, although it measured slightly smaller than most competing models.

2019 Buick Regal GS

The Current-Generation Buick Regal

Beginning in 2018 and continuing for another year, Buick once again relies on Opel to supply it with Regal models. But there are a few important differences of note:

1), Opel is no longer owned by GM. The brand is now owned by France’s PSA Groupe, which includes Peugeot, and

2), The sedan is dead, but two new body styles roll out. The Buick Regal is now defined by three models — the Regal TourX, Regal Sportback, and the Regal GS. The first model is a wagon, the second two are “sportback” models, which is another name for a hatchback.

2019 Buick Regal GS Overview

Buick supplied us with a 2019 Regal GS sedan, therefore that’s the model we’ll discuss herein. We already evaluated the Regal TourX. Likely, the standard Regal Sportback offers a similar experience, at least from a driving perspective.

What’s the main difference between the Sportback and GS? Its what’s found under the hood, that’s what. The TourX and Sportback have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 250 horsepower and upwards of 295 pound-feet of torque (265 with front-wheel drive). The Regal GS has a 3.6-liter V6 engine with 310 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque. It also has standard all-wheel drive.

2019 Buick Regal GS

A Matter of Design

The Regal GS has a handsome look with a bold front fascia, crisp lines, and a modern style. Front to back, the look is elegant and sporty. You’d be forgiven if you thought it was a sedan even as the big rear window eases down to a rear deck.

It is only when you inspect the rear window that you realize that its size is proportionally larger than what’s found in most sedans. Flick the tri-shield log and the hatch rises up, just like a utility vehicle.

Hatchbacks of old stood out from the rear and sometimes included a pair of clasps (here’s looking at you, Ford Pinto). The Regal Sportback/GS does its best to look like a sedan and that’s a very good thing.

2019 Buick Regal GS

Buick dresses the GS in its own sport front and rear fascias as well as side skirts and a rear spoiler. You’ll also find 19-inch alloy wheels and performance brakes with Brembo front calipers. LED lighting elements amplify the tail lamps. Buyers may also select an Appearance Package ($485), which adds such features as LED headlamps, headlamps with auto leveling, and cornering lamps. Buick also bundles wireless charging with this package.

Inside, the GS’ cabin is roomy, uncluttered and comfortable. But especially up front. Though all-wheel drive, the GS sits barely above other cars in this segment. Still, the sight lines are wide and unobstructed. The dashboard is layered, but not overstocked. Other standout features include a three-dial instrument panel, a padded steering wheel with a flat bottom, and an orderly center stack with a touchscreen, knobs and switches to control the cabin features. Buick also includes metal pedals to enhance this model’s sporty persona.

The front sport seats with twin stitching are sufficiently bolstered and supply sufficient back and neck support. They have the look of very expensive sport seats, but they’re as thickly padded as some. Happily, they’re not over bolstered to the point where your hip points feel squeezed.

The rear seat holds three, but tall passengers may find the sloping roofline not to their liking. It shaves away about 1.5 inches of headroom compared with the TourX and that makes for a noticeable difference. On the other hand, legroom and hip room is an improvement over the previous sedan. Indeed, the GS has about an extra 3.5 inches between the wheels over the previous sedan.

2019 Buick Regal GS

Standard features include full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, a heated steering wheel, leather seats, heated and cooled front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench seat. The lone package offered is a Buick Interior Protection Package ($200), which brings in a cargo tray along with first- and second-row all-weather floor mats.

Behind the rear seat is 31.5 cubic feet of storage space, which is about double what you’d find in a comparable sedan. It also rivals what some small crossover SUVs offer. Drop down the rear seat and that space expands to 60.5 cubic feet. Now you know why the Regal Sportback/GS is an attractive alternative to a utility vehicle.

Safety & Technology

We don’t yet have a safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but we expect the 2019 Regal in all its configurations will fare well. Standard safety features include a rearview monitor and Teen Driver, the latter making it possible for parents to monitor teen driving behavior.

Additional safety features can be had through the available Driver Confidence Package II GS ($1,690). This package bundles such features as forward collision alert, forward automatic braking, front pedestrian braking, adaptive cruise control, following distance indicator, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and a head-up display. This is one area where Buick trails the competition — most manufacturers offer some if not all driver-assist safety features as standard equipment.

On the tech front, Buick equips the Regal GS with an 8-inch touchscreen, voice recognition, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility. You’ll also find HD Radio, satellite radio, OnStar services, and 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capability.

Also available is a Sights and Sounds Package ($945). This package ties together remote start, navigation, and an 8-speaker audio system.

On the Road

Is the Buick Regal GS a performance model? That depends on how you define the term. Typically, any model with performance attributes has enhanced power, steering, handling, and an adaptive drivetrain. This Buick has all that.

Under the hood is a 3.6-liter, V6 engine with 310 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque. Buick pairs this engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The performance numbers are laudable as they beat every other model with a naturally aspirated V6 engine, although there aren’t many left.

2019 Buick Regal GS

For instance, the Toyota Camry with its 3.5-liter V6 earns 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. There’s also the turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine powering the Ford Fusion Sport. This one bangs out 325 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Notably, the Fusion Sport and the Nissan Altima are two models available that offer all-wheel drive, which happens to come standard with the Subaru Legacy.

Competing luxury models usually offer standard rear- or front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. However, the Audi A5 Sportback supplies standard all-wheel drive.

Step-off acceleration is strong and passing power is equally satisfying with the Regal GS. You’ll find both “sport” and “GS” drive control switches, with both adding more weight to the steering, faster transmission shift points and more “boom” from the exhaust system. The sport setting, however, barely seemed different from the default or “normal” setting.

Torque-vectoring all-wheel drive sets the Regal GS apart from the pack. That said, it isn’t on the level of the Audi A5 Sportback in driving dynamics as the pricier of these two German models navigates twisty roads and pulls out of corners with all four wheels firmly planted. Body roll is more evident in the Buick than it is in the Audi.

Is there something missing here? Yes! Paddle shifters. This is an egregious omission for a car claiming performance attributes as it removes an important slice of driver engagement. You can’t get a manual gearbox with the Regal and, sadly, you can’t control shifting with AutoStick or paddle shifters.

2019 Buick Regal GS

Auto Trends Recommends

The Buick Regal GS is a special trim level of the Regal Sportback. If the general design interests you and you’re less concerned about performance, then the standard model may appeal to you. It also starts precisely $14,000 less than the GS. That said, we think one of the better-equipped trims, such as the Essence — with its leather seating, heated front seats, and available all-wheel drive is the place to begin your search.

As for the Regal GS, its appeal targets a narrow range of drivers. Besides the mainstream sedans, there are two models that share its body style in this segment — the Audi A5 Sportback and the Kia Stinger. The Buick is priced between the two, but the best value and performance lies with the Kia. The Stinger also offers standard rear-wheel drive with available all-wheel drive and two choices of engines, including a blistering twin-turbo V6.

Swift Sportback: 2018 Buick Regal GS

August 3, 2018 by admin 7 Comments

New Sportback model offers an interesting take on a hatchback design.

This sport red paint scheme is standard with the 2018 Regal GS.
Other colors are available for an extra cost.

We have a new Buick Regal to consider, but it probably isn’t the model you think it is. Indeed, for 2018 the Regal offers two body styles — a wagon and a hatchback — replacing the previous sedan. As before, the Regal is a midsize model with some upscale features.

Before we examine the model at hand, let’s take a look at the Regal name, which has been used by Buick since 1973, although it had disappeared for a while earlier this millennium. During the years it was absent in North America, the Regal continued in China.

Beginning in 2010, the Buick Regal made its North American return, thanks to Opel and the Insignia sedan on which it was based. That model was built in Germany for its first year, then in Canada until the fifth-generation Regal came to an end in 2017.

Starting in 2018, an all-new Regal rolled out. The sedan is gone as well as the Canadian production that previously supported it. For the latest model, Buick turned to Opel and its factory in Germany to supply two new body styles: a wagon (which we covered here) and a four-door hatchback or Sportback model. That latter model is offered as the Regal Sportback or Regal GS. I had the GS, which is a name that represents the performance model in the Regal line.

Happily, the 2018 Regal GS lives up to the previous model, while striking out in a new design direction. We’ll drill down on the new vehicle’s particulars, including the changes for this new sixth-generation model.

2018 Buick Regal GS.
The GS’ profile gives only the slightest hint that this sedan is actually a hatchback.

2018 Buick Regal GS Overview

Buick markets the GS separately from the Sportback, although it essentially serves as the top-tier trim for that body style.

What is especially noteworthy about the GS is that instead of offering the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the Sportback and TourX wagon, the Regal GS gets GM’s 3.6-liter V6 engine. That engine powers the full-size LaCrosse sedan and the Enclave crossover. GM pairs this engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The GS is all-wheel drive.

Sporty Silhouette

The 2018 Buick Regal GS starts at $39,990, inclusive of the delivery charge. Buick calls this model a “sport sedan” and at first glance it does have sedan-like proportions. That is, until you stand behind it and take note of the large glass window that slopes down to the notch-like rear. Kudos to the designers as this model looks nothing like the hatchbacks of yore.

It also doesn’t look like any Buick we’ve seen before. And that is a good thing. Evidently, Buick wants the new Regal to do for the model line in the new millennium, what it did in the 1980s — supply a handsome look with performance attributes.

2018 Buick Regal GS
The first indication the GS is a hatchback is with its large rear glass window.

The front fascia commands attention with its sleek headlamps and bold overall presence. Its intake is narrow and long, placing an aggressive stamp on its face. The GS’ profile is handsome too — you won’t find ornamental vent ports, but you will see functioning side marker lights. The appropriately placed character lines and body sculpting add flair.

The rear deck opens by pressing the Buick insignia. The liftgate lifts high, revealing a gaping storage compartment. If you never thought you’d consider a hatchback, the GS’ design invites you to take a closer look. If there is a change I would like to see is for the key fob to include an unlocking mechanism. There isn’t one and I couldn’t find a button inside for that either.

Cabin Contrasts

The GS’ cabin is roomy, comfortable, but it is also a contradiction of sorts. Its strongest attributes are its sporty front seats, which have heating, cooling and massaging features. They’re not Recaro seats, but they do supply superior neck, back, hip and thigh support over standard bucket seats.

The 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat folds completely flat. When the full seat is down, the already generous storage capacity expands from 31.5 cubic feet to 60.7 cubic feet. It is this storage attribute that made hatchbacks appealing in the first place. In the Regal GS, the space seems incredibly large — you’ll have no trouble fitting a bicycle or other sporting gear inside. The rear seat headroom is sufficient, at least I found it was that way with my six-foot frame.

As for the interior layout, it features many more hard plastics and big buttons than we like. Where the exterior hits all the styling highlights, the cabin falls short — it could be so much better than it is. I recently drove the Kia Cadenza GT and was impressed by its upscale feel, something that’s missing in the Buick. The Kia costs less money too.

The standards feature list includes full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, leather seats and dual-zone climate control. The pedals are bright, but they’re not fully metallic.

2018 Buick Regal GS
The GS’ front sport seats enhance align with this model’s mission.

Tech and Safety

I’ve given Buick ample plaudits in the past for its in-cabin technologies and that praise continues with the new model. It begins with an OnStar plan featuring a three-month trial subscription. It continues with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, a feature that has bailed me out more than once when I was in a remote location and needed Internet access.

Other features include an audio system with an 8-inch color touch-screen display, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, USB ports and satellite radio. Optional features include an 8-speaker Bose audio system, HD Radio and navigation.

Beyond OnStar, stability and traction control, and a rearview camera, the GS offers several driver-assist technologies. The standard package includes lane change alert with side blind zone alert and rear cross-traffic alert. You can also upgrade by choosing a Driver Confidence Package ($1,690). This package brings in such features as adaptive cruise control, following distance indicator, forward collision alert and forward automatic braking. It also has lane keep assist with lane departure warning, front pedestrian braking and a head-up display.

On the Road With the Buick Regal GS

The previous Regal GS utilized a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, this time it has a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 engine, which makes 310 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque. Buick pairs this engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission and includes standard all-wheel drive with active dual clutch.

This is the first time in more than a decade that a midsize Buick model has a V6 engine. It is a very good match for the Regal GS, as it delivers ample step-off acceleration and robust mid-range power when you need it. The only disappointment is the lack of paddle shifters, but at least the transmission moves quickly between gears. And if you must, you can move the shift lever to manual mode and control gear shifts that way.

2018 Buick Regal GS
Metal pedals and a thickly padded steering wheel are a GS feature.

What helps this model shine is its sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. The system shifts power to the rear wheels when needed, then to the individual wheels on demand. This arrangement enables the Regal GS to hang twisty roads and pull out of corners with ease. Combine all this with weighted steering and a constantly adjusting suspension system and the GS has our attention.

One of the more curious arrangements is this Buick’s drive mode system. Instead of utilizing a dial to switch between normal, sport and GS modes, you’ll find switches at the base of the center console just ahead of the transmission stick.

Normal is the default mode, so you don’t do need to do anything there. When I pressed either of the switches, I expected noticeable changes in engine mapping, steering weight and exhaust sound, but it was hard to detect the changes.

So, although I liked the powertrain arrangement, the lack of paddle shifters and the hard-to-perceive drive mode changes are disappointments.

2018 Buick Regal GS
The GS is the lone Regal model powered by a V6 engine.

2018 Buick Regal GS Parting Thoughts

Buick prices the Regal Sportback from $25,915, offering four trims below the GS. In fact, the well-equipped Essence trim matches most of the GS’ attributes and costs $5,200 less. This means you get a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 250 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission. You also get all-wheel drive.

All things considered, the 2018 Buick Regal GS delivers an outstanding exterior design, leading-edge technologies and decent performance. However, its interior trails the competition, including the Kia Stinger and the Audi A5 Sportback.

Wagon Master: 2018 Buick Regal TourX

May 14, 2018 by admin 5 Comments

Buick overhauls the Regal line, adds TourX and Sportback models.

2018 Buick Regal TourX
The 2018 Regal line expands to include this TourX wagon.

The Buick Regal has taken on many forms across its long history, including a coupe, sedan and briefly as a wagon. Its previous iteration was as a four-door sedan, a model developed in Germany, then built in Canada for the North American market.

Well, sedan sales have been deteriorating for years and after a seven-year run, Buick cancelled most of the sedan line, although the performance GS remains. Beginning in 2018, an updated Regal portfolio is in place, but this time it also includes a hatchback (Regal Sportback) and a wagon (Regal TourX). As of publication, Buick offers the Sportback in the US and Canada, while the GS sedan and wagon are exclusive to the United States.

The two newest Regals are once again built only in Germany and by Opel. Up until last year, Opel was a GM division, but now owned by Groupe PSA, mainly comprising Peugeot and Citroen, the French automaker.

We cannot explain for certain how or why this arrangement continues, other than to say that when the Opel-to-PSA deal became final, certain models were sharing a common platform and will likely do so for years ahead. No matter, the Regal TourX is an Opel (or a Vauxhall) Insignia in some markets, but it is also a Holden Commodore in Australia. Got it?

2018 Buick Regal TourX

2018 Buick Regal TourX

For this review, we shall look primarily at the test model at hand — the 2018 Regal TourX. Where necessary, we will mention a few things about the Sportback, but not much else. There are some differences between the two, therefore we will not take a deep dive into what we have not driven. Just so you know, Buick markets the Sportback as a “Car,” but it lists the TourX under its “SUV & Crossovers” category.

The 2018 Regal TourX comes in three trim levels: TourX ($29,070), Preferred ($32,670) and Essence ($35,070). These prices do not include the $925 destination and handling charge, nor are taxes, fees, tags or discounts factored in. All models have a turbocharged engine, an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Exterior Highlights

The Regal TourX does not attempt to hide its wagon design and that is a good thing. Up front, it shares a fascia common to the brand with the Buick tri-shield insignia and wing-like chrome bands flowing out from the center. Sleek headlamps and pronounced cutouts for the fog lamps add sporty touches.

The wheel wells come wrapped in contrasting trim, while deep sculpting marks the profile. A rising beltline and falling roofline meet to form the liftgate. The rear fascia has sleek wraparound tail lamps and dual exhaust ports.

Although obviously a wagon, this model adds special styling points, including an upswept rear roof pillar. You will also find chrome door trim that runs from the front to the rear pillars, then intersects with the tail lamps. Whoever said a wagon cannot deliver flair? It is a look I found appealing.

Standard equipment includes halogen headlamps, fog lamps and 18-inch aluminum wheels. Available features include LED headlamps with automatic leveling, a panoramic moonroof, power-heated side mirrors, roof rack rails and a power liftgate.

Interior Highlights

When it comes to passenger space, the TourX compares with any midsize, two-row SUV. Specifically, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Edge and the Nissan Murano are three that come to mind. The main difference, of course, between the Buick and this trio is the high profile of the competitors. Other than that, the Buick compares well here.

The TourX interior reminded me of the Buick Enclave, a three-row SUV with nine more inches between the wheels. Plenty of soft-touch materials, chrome and with the Essence model, leather. It is a look that is at once soothing as it is elegant, one that supplies a fitting parallel to the LaCrosse sedan.

The driver-centric instrument panel is big and clear, the center console smartly ordered and uncluttered. The front seats are plush, yet firm. The rear seat holds two adults with ease and three when needed. My test model had leather seats, although cloth seats are standard. The cabin is very quiet and is up there with Buick’s exacting standards.

Standard equipment includes full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column and air conditioning. Among the upgrades you will find are a heated steering wheel, power front seats with lumbar support, heated front seats, ambient lighting and dual-zone climate control.

Not to leave out of the discussion is the storage space behind the second-row seat. Buick supplies 32.7 cubic feet, which is more than the 23.6 cubic feet in the Enclave. But if you fold the third-row seat in the Enclave you have a generous 58 cubic feet. Back to the TourX and you have 73.3 cubic feet behind the first row — that’s ample room to carry your gear — a bicycle, tent, skis, what have you. And that is why Buick offers a standard 60/40 or an available 40/20/40 second-row bench seat.

2018 Buick Regal TourX

Technology & Safety Features

I have long praised Buick for its tech features and the TourX does not disappoint. The audio package includes a 7-inch color touch screen display, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility.

You will also find a USB port inside the center console and a WiFi system for connecting up to seven devices. Other features include keyless entry and push-button start, remote panic alarm and OnStar connected vehicle services.

Upgrades include HD and satellite radio, navigation, an 8-speaker Bose audio system and remote start. Wireless charging is an option.

Among safety items you will find a rear vision camera. Move up through the trim levels and multiple driver-assist features roll out, including lane change alert with side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert and rear park assist. Other features include lane keep assist with lane departure warning, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, and adaptive cruise control with forward automatic braking. My top-of-the-line Essence trim had all such features present.

On the Road: 2018 Buick Regal TourX

A station wagon has a V8 engine, right? Or at least a powerful V6. Well, in this case it has neither.

How about a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine? That is exactly what motivates the Regal TourX, delivering 250 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Buick pairs this engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Do these numbers seem underpowered? Well, consider how they stack up with the Buick Lucerne, a full-size model last offered in 2011: that sedan’s 3.9-liter V6 earned 227 horsepower and 237 pound-feet of torque. Further, there was a V8 available as well, delivering 292 horsepower and 288 pound-feet of torque. Thus, the torque number on the TourX beat the old V8 and that is something to keep in mind when considering this model.

Off-the-mark acceleration with the TourX is quite good. When you need extra power, the turbo kicks in with only minimal lag detected. A willing transmission works unnoticed in the background and that is what we like. Direct and weighted steering imbue driver confidence, while the smooth ride should please everyone.

Although not a curve carver, the TourX stays planted. The all-wheel drive system is a big help on wet roads as well as when you pull out of a corner. That’s the main difference between the Sportback and the TourX — the hatchback offers standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. I think Buick made the right decision by making the TourX all-wheel drive only.

As for off-roading, this wagon is strictly designed for light-duty work — traveling on gravelly roads or dusty paths. Its 6-inch ground clearance means you won’t be following the Outback across a shallow creek or to a sandy beach.

2018 Buick Regal TourX

Parting Thoughts

There is a revival taking place in the wagon market. Besides the TourX, you will find the Subaru Outback, Audi A4 AllRoad, Volkswagen Golf Alltrack and the Volvo V60 and V90 Cross Country models. We must not leave out the Jaguar XF Sportbrake and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon, although both aim squarely at the luxury market.

I found myself almost giddy with the TourX, especially when I showed the vehicle to crossover and minivan owners. For the most part, there was a distinct love it/hate it reaction by some, but then I could see others carefully taking it in. That alone is a good thing as wagons fell out of grace long ago, especially by those who left one for a minivan.

But the market is cyclical and what was once out of favor could very well catch on again. With Buick, there is no need to wait as the 2018 Regal TourX delivers. Choose the well-equipped Essence and you will come away with a loaded model for under $40,000. This represents an important price point for similar crossover SUVs.

Premium Sports Sedan: 2016 Buick Regal GS

January 19, 2016 by admin 5 Comments

2016 Buick Regal
2016 Buick Regal.

Making the transition from a mainstream brand to luxury marque may mean consumers end up committing to a larger cash outlay than what they prefer. On the other hand, the Buick brand provides an intermediary step between the two choices, something few nameplates can claim. In effect, Buick makes it possible for Chevrolet owners to ease into luxury before deciding whether Cadillac or some other high-priced make is right for them.

Buick Regal Competition and Model History

Buick’s competition has faded in recent years as Ford’s Mercury brand is gone and Chrysler now competes with Chevrolet. At the same time, Acura and Lincoln products are fair game, offering a premium feel much in the same way that Buick does.

The Buick Regal is one such model that competes with the upscale brands. Its chief competition includes the Acura ILX, Audi A3, and the Lincoln MKZ. The Regal is based on the Opel Insignia and is best compared to midsize mainstream models or premium compact sedans.

2016 Buick Regal

Now in its sixth model year, the current generation Regal is nothing like the previous models. The name can be traced all the way back to 1973 when GM released a family of intermediate models for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Buick. This collection of rear-wheel drive coupes and sedans were downsized in 1978 and yielded some of the most noteworthy models, including the Grand National and GNX. Beginning in 1988 and lasting through two generational changes before its cancellation in 2004, even smaller versions of the Regal were built. GM had also switched to a front-wheel drive layout by then.

After a seven-year hiatus, the Regal name was resurrected and the first models were imported from Germany. However, a factory in Oshawa, Ontario, was soon given the honors to build the North American-spec model and has served in that capacity since.

Buick offers the Regal in 1SV, Standard, Premium II, and GS trim levels. Front-wheel is standard across the model line; all-wheel drive is available in the two upper trim levels.

2016 Buick Regal

Two Engine Choices and a Lower Price

Upon its 2011 release, a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine was standard and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder was available. Both engines are still used and are paired with six-speed automatic transmissions. From 2012 to 2015 you could opt for a 6-speed manual gearbox. Unfortunately, sales never justified the stick’s existence, thus this option was quietly removed for 2016.

Starting in 2012, Buick began offering a mild hybrid system called eAssist, what enables the Regal to achieve 36 mpg on the highway. Originally offered to all customers, the hybrid is now provided to fleet customers only.

The 2016 Buick Regal GS is priced from $36,490 and represents a new, lower price for this sport sedan. Indeed, when I tested a 2015 version last spring, the base price came in at $39,810 or $3,320 higher than the 2016 edition. Further, the sticker price on the earlier model was an eye popping $44,670 compared with the $40,550 on the most recent driver.

Importantly, the price cut means the content is unchanged or at least it has changed for the better: Apple CarPlay is now included. So, why the drop in price? Doubtlessly there are two things at play here: the competition is selling their cars for less and consumers continue to gravitate to crossover utility vehicles. That being said, the Envision crossover joins the line this spring, a model that is certain to siphon sales from Buick’s family of sedans.

Buick Regal v. Acura ILX

The GS’ arrival followed my week with an Acura ILX. Hands down, the Buick is the better model. But that’s not an entirely fair comparison as the ILX is offered in front-wheel drive only and there is no turbo option. The ILX is slightly smaller too, as it is based on the Honda Civic’s platform. Still, the Regal offers a more elegant presence, a quieter cabin and better quality materials. You should also keep in mind that the comparison was between the top-end Regal and a more run-of-the-mill ILX.

Dressed in Buick garb, the Regal GS is a handsome little sedan. It offers room for five, but the back seat is tight. Nevertheless, the sedan should appeal to a young executive, perhaps one with a spouse and small children. Otherwise, the growing family may find the Enclave SUV more to their liking.

2016 Buick Regal

A Look Inside

The Regal GS comes with a thickly padded, leather-wrapped steering wheel. Behind that wheel is a three-analog display featuring a tachometer, speedometer and fuel/oil displays. At the top of the center stack is a set of six switches — it is easy to overlook them, but don’t. Besides the lane departure warning switch, you’ll find the GS’s interactive drive control system.

Pay special attention to the two switches on the outside of the row as they contain “GS” and “Sport” drive modes. Both modes adapt ride and handling, especially at high speeds; the GS mode provides the highest level of handling enjoyment.

Credit Buick with developing a model that is very comfortable for the driver. Leather-appointed seating, heated front seats, and a 12-way driver’s seat is at the ready. The only feature lacking is a seat extender, usually included in such driver’s cars as the BMW 3 Series.

2016 Buick Regal

Behind the Wheel

Press the ignition switch, engage the transmission and you’re ready to discover everything this sedan offers. Soon, the turbo spools and begins to deliver the full measure of its 295 foot-pounds of torque, enabling the GS to zip down the road with authority.

The all-wheel drive system includes a four-wheel independent suspension with wheel-slip management and an electronic limited-slip rear differential enhancing handling. A HiPer Strut front suspension is also at work, limiting torque steer. You’ll feel confident on twisty roads, but you’ll also sense the difference between the Buick and the high-end European sedans. Whereas a 3 Series always feels poised and planted, the Regal GS subtly reminds you that without all-wheel drive at work, it would be just another pricey sedan.

The current generation Regal is now in its sixth year. A 2014 refresh brought light changes to the exterior, update the equipment catalog and brought in additional safety features. A redesigned dashboard also was introduced. The next-generation model is probably a year or two away; keep an eye on the major auto shows for its introduction.

Buick Regal Considerations

The Regal GS is the sportiest Buick model of the millennium, although it doesn’t go far enough for people who would like to see the brand flash its high-end performance side for the first time in nearly 30 years. That may be left up to a new model based on the Avista concept, a rear-wheel drive coupe introduced at the 2016 Detroit auto show (NAIAS), one with Grand National or Riviera aspirations.

Sporty Sedan: 2014 Buick Regal GS

March 11, 2014 by admin 3 Comments

A North American sedan with European roots.

2014 Buick Regal GS.
Updated fascia gives the Buick Regal a look befitting its name.

In 2013, GM sold more than 9.7 million vehicles worldwide for one of its best years ever. Its Buick brand contributed over 1 million sales, nearly matching Opel, and behind Chevrolet.

China is the biggest market for Buick. In the United States, consumers who were once turned off by an assortment of aged sedans and nondescript utility vehicles from the tri-shield brand have now come around.

Serving Prosperous Shoppers

Much credit for new consumer interest must be given to executives who understood that keeping and improving Buick and allowing higher volume Pontiac to die was the right choice. Today, most Buick and GMC outlets are tied together, giving car shoppers a wide range of vehicles.

Buick along with Cadillac gives GM a 1-2 punch when reaching out to luxury and premium vehicle shoppers. Combined, the two brands captured more than 388,000 US sales in 2013, outpacing all other luxury brands. Certainly, a case could be made that Buick isn’t a luxury brand, but many of its offerings correspond to vehicles sold by Audi, Acura, Infiniti, and Lexus. Thus, Cadillac serves the higher end of the market and Buick the lower end.

2014 Buick Regal GS
The Regal’s profile parallels the look of the Opel Insignia.

2014 Buick Regal AWD GS

One of the five models currently composing the Buick line is the Regal sedan. Introduced in 2011, the Regal is Buick’s version of the Insignia, an Opel model sold in Europe. Regal is a well-known Buick name, but the current iteration is not like any of the more recent Regals. Instead, it is a worthy reminder of earlier Regals including the Grand National particularly when the Regal GS is considered.

And it was a 2014 Buick Regal GS in Crystal Red Tintcoat that was a recent press fleet loaner, a five-passenger sedan. Front-wheel drive is standard as tested, the GS was outfitted with optional all-wheel drive and powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The powertrain combination and all-wheel drive give the Regal GS performance that rivals the Grand National and handling better than any Buick in my memory. You dont get paddle shifters with the GS, but you do have use of a manual gate though with no real shifting advantage. It would be great to have a manual gearbox available with the AWD, but it isnt available for now.

The turbocharged four-cylinder is also used in the Cadillac ATS and makes 259 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque. The turbo doesn’t kick in immediately, but when it does it takes this sedan from 0 to 60 mph in just over six seconds.

On-Demand All-Wheel Drive

The Buick Regal GS is equipped with a Haldex all-wheel drive system, what sends as much as 95 percent of the engine power to the rear wheels when needed. Switching between standard, Sport and GS driving modes tweaks steering and the rear differential for improved handling. This model also has four-piston Brembo brakes up front as well as stiffer springs and adjustable shocks. The handling is quite good with very little torque steer present.

The 2014 edition also marks a mid cycle refresh for the middle of the three Buick sedans. Its good looks have been enhanced with wing-shaped LED lighting, the grille stretched out, and sportier high intensity headlamps added. Wing-shaped LED tail lights are the only change to the rear which continues with the lip-shaped spoiler and dual exhaust ports. This model sits on 19-inch alloy wheels and is outfitted with color-keyed, heated side mirrors.

Refreshed Interior

Buick equips the Regal with a remote vehicle start system and keyless entry. Push button start and a security system are standard.

For 2014, the Regal GS receives an updated GMC Intellink infotainment screen, what now supports Stitcher SmartRadio and Pandora Internet radio. The front seats are plush and bolstered, and have a three-setting heating element. The top setting is quite warm, a good place to start on a frigid morning, but I found it uncomfortable after a while. The heating element on the tilt and telescoping steering wheel warms up fast the usual cruise and secondary controls are present there as well.

I can’t say that the Regals interior has the wow factor you’d expect in this class. The design is stylish and modern, but the materials are average including simulated wood and bright work trim throughout the cabin. Soft touch materials across the dash are pleasant enough, but as tested this vehicle has a $44,275 sticker price. The 9-speaker Bose audio system befits the Regal or what rightly helps this model live up to its name.

The next generation AWD Regal GS could use a manual gearbox.

The rear seats are comfortable, but legroom is tighter than other vehicles in its class. Seat placement is for three, but you’ll find better room in the larger LaCrosse and comparable space in the smaller Verano. Trunk room is about average for its class as the spare tire is not included. Instead, you get one of those tire sealant and inflation kits that will have you calling roadside assistance instead.

Tech Safety Packages

Tech features push up the price of any car and the Regal GS price reflects that. Ive grown to like the adaptive cruise control with GMs products and the ability to choose from three gap levels between cars. Automatic collision braking is also part of the package; both safety features bring the sedan to a full stop if you do not. Other safety features that drove up the price included lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, side blind zone alert, and lane change alert. The two safety packages added $2,500 to the base sticker price; another $1,000 was added with the power sunroof and $495 for the special paint finish.

Supportive seats keep the front riders planted.

The three Buick sedans are tightly positioned offering buyers a choice of small, medium and large models. The Regal may have the sleekest design of all three thanks to its Opel origins. Word has it that in two years when the next generation Regal debuts, Buick will have a lot more input on its design. Better quality cabin materials, more rear legroom, and upgraded powertrain choices would help this already attractive sedan move to the top of its segment.

2014 Buick Regal: Standard Turbo Engine & Available All-Wheel Drive

November 18, 2013 by admin 1 Comment

The 2014 Buick Regal receives a power boost.

Buick’s five-passenger Regal sedan is receiving two important changes for 2014. The first change outfits the Regal with a standard turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder engine across the model line. The second change brings in all-wheel drive availability, just what the larger LaCrosse sedan also offers. Buick bought back the Regal in 2011 after a seven-year absence.

More power and better handling mark the 2014 Buick Regal.

The updates for the Buick Regal keep this model relevant in a competitive premium small/midsize sedan segment. That segment includes the Lexus IS 250, Acura TSX, and Audi A4, entry-level models sold by these luxury brands. GM has positioned Buick to serve the lower end of the luxury market with Cadillac targeting higher end luxury buyers.

Twin-Scroll Turbocharged Engine

The Regal’s twin-scroll turbocharged engine is SAE-rated at 259 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque, all from an engine displacing at just 2.0 liters. In comparison, the 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbo powering the 2014 BMW 428i makes 240 horsepower and 270 foot-pounds of torque. The engine replaces a standard output turbo previously available in the Regal with the higher output motor previously available only in the Regal GS.

Noted Mike Katerberg, chief powertrain engineer, “…with our new 2.0L Turbo, we were able to increase both and create one of the most torque rich and fuel efficient combinations on the market.” Buick pairs the engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel mileage increases as well from 18 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway for the 2013 edition to 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway for the 2014 edition.

Ward’s 10 Best Engine

The high output turbocharged engine also powers the Cadillac ATS and is a “Ward’s 10 Best Engine.” GM says that the engine has 95 percent new parts compared with the old engine and features an aluminum block and direct injection. Other changes include dual continuously variable cam phasing with increased authority to maximize low-speed torque and fuel efficiency, an acoustic intake manifold, a new two-piece oil pan, and relocated balance shafts.

GM engineering sought to deliver a smoother, quieter and more refined engine along with improved performance, attributes that Katerberg says are essential elements in a Buick.

The 2014 Buick Regal is priced from $30,115 and is sold in standard, Premium I, Premium II and GS editions. All-wheel drive is available across the model line, pushing the base price up to $32,790. Fully equipped, the Regal GS retails from $40,195 to just over $44,000 when all options are taken.

All-Wheel Drive Availability

Buick describes the Regal’s on demand all-wheel drive as a system designed to optimize handling and stability. It automatically monitors road conditions by sending power to the wheels with the most grip. An electronically limited slip rear differential also aids in vehicle stability and cornering capability. On the Regal GS, a three-mode drive control is included, what provides enhanced drive control options not found elsewhere.

A 2.4-liter normally aspirated four cylinder engine is also available. It is part of Buick’s eAssist system, a partial hybrid arrangement that utilizes an electric motor and a small lithium-ion battery system to provide limited electric power while increasing horsepower and torque. As equipped, this model is rated 36 mpg on the highway.

A refreshed Buick Regal is important to the brand, a model that has seen its sales fall by 32 percent year-to-date through Oct. 2013. Incentives helped push Oct. sales up by nearly 47 percent and GM would like to maintain the momentum, something the 2014 model may make possible.
