Cadillac Exclusive: Twin-Turbo V8 Engine

Cadillac: New V8 underpins 2019 CT6 V-Sport model.

Cadillac made some news this week when it announced the forthcoming 2019 CT6 V-Sport model, a performance variant of its largest sedan. But it wasn’t simply a new trim that caught everyone’s attention, rather an all-new engine, one exclusive to GM’s luxury marque that will power the V-Sport.

The engine is a 4.2-liter twin turbo V8, a long-promised and often-rumored powerplant for this luxury emblem. GM estimates the engine will deliver 550 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, numbers that will challenge BMW M and Mercedes-AMG for supremacy. Cadillac will offer a slightly detuned variant too, delivering a more “modest” 500 horsepower. The new engine will be hand-built at GM’s Performance Build Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky. That same plant also builds the Corvette Z06 engine.

“Cadillac’s performance technology reaches new heights with the new and exclusive 4.2L Twin Turbo V-8,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “The engineering prowess embodies the very spirt of Cadillac performance on and off the racetrack.”

Performance Prowess

It is no secret that Cadillac Racing is a formidable force and because of that its engineering has trickled down to Cadillac V-Series and V-Sport models.

The automaker says the new engine is a “clean sheet design,” which means it isn’t the derivative of an existing engine. The brand claims unique design elements in an effort to weigh performance with efficiency. Importantly, the fresh build allows the automaker to achieve the performance goals it had in mind for the CT6 V-Sport.

“It builds on Cadillac’s well-established turbocharging know-how and forges new ground with innovative features that deliver exceptional performance and refinement,” explained Jordan Lee, 4.2L TT V-8 chief engineer.

“Hot V” Configuration

Cadillac says the center of the engine’s design is a “hot V” configuration, one that switches the traditional order of the cylinder heads’ intake and exhaust systems. This arrangement allowed the engineers to place the turbochargers at the top of the engine or in the valley between the heads. The manufacturer claims the layout essentially eliminates turbo lag, while keeping the engine’s overall footprint tight.

The new design enables intake-charged air to enter by means of the lower outside of the heads before exiting through the top inside, where the turbochargers sit within the exhaust manifolds. A quick spool up renders an almost immediate power transfer. Further, the design permits closer mounting of the catalytic converters, yet another contributor to this engine’s smart packaging.

Other features of the new engine are as follows:

  • Twin-scroll turbochargers
  • Electronic wastegate control
  • Twin water-to-air charge coolers
  • Twin throttle bodies
  • Direct injection
  • Dual-independent camshaft phasing
  • Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation)
  • Variable-pressure oiling system
  • Stop/start technology

New Transmission Pairing

Besides the new engine, the Cadillac CT6 V-Sport will benefit from a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

This transmission is prized for it wide gear ratio, which Cadillac claims enhances step-off acceleration. With smaller steps between gears, the transmission aids the engine in maintaining optimum power nearly at all times.

2019 Cadillac CT6 V-Sport

As for the new model, the automaker says that its design inspiration comes from the Escala, a handsome concept car introduced at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.

This translates into a bold, dark front with a large V-inspired mesh grille along with new horizontal LED headlamps and vertical accents. Also adding to the menacing look are lower aero components and gloss black side window surround trim. The sedan will ride on unique, 20-inch V-Sport wheels set within summer tires developed exclusively for Cadillac.

Other features include a mechanical limited-slip rear differential for improved traction and predictable performance while on the track or when carving corners. A V-Sport specific suspension, a 19-inch Brembo brake system, modified steering and magnetic ride control damper calibrations, and a new exhaust system are among the other performance highlights for this model.

Besides the V-Sport, the 2019 CT6 lineup introduces Cadillac’s “Y” trim strategy for each of its models. Specifically, each model will have Luxury and Sport trims with varying personas and characteristics. For instance, on non-V-Sport CT6 models, new horizontal high-lumen headlights and a revised taillight design rejuvenate the brand’s trademark lighting, drawing inspiration from the Escala Concept.

More information about the V-Sport and other Cadillac models will be offered at the 2018 New York International Auto Show, which opens to the public on March 30 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan. Please bookmark this page as we’ll supply updated and new information as it occurs.

US Auto Trends: First Half 2016

July 7, 2016 by admin 3 Comments

Is the US automotive market at its peak?

Jaguar F-PACE
Jaguar’s first-ever SUV is pacing the brand.

The dust has settled following June’s US auto sales manufacturer reports, giving analysts ample fodder to examine the current auto trends. As you probably already know, light truck and utility vehicle sales are up, while car sales are down.

Yet, there are some models bucking the trend and there is a very good chance the perennial car category leading Toyota Camry may lose its top spot this year as car shoppers pursue the all-new Honda Civic. The Ford F-150 continues to dominate truck sales, while the Toyota RAV4 is now the best-selling utility vehicle in America.

Let’s examine the top auto trends for the first half of 2016:

1. Chevrolet’s controversial F-150 attack ad isn’t working. Late this spring, Chevrolet launched its most aggressive attack ad against the Ford F-150 we’ve seen in years. Advertisements show both the F-150 and Silverado trucks lined side-by-side as rocks and later a toolbox were dropped in each bed. The aluminum-based F-150 suffered serious damage, while the steel-based Silverado held up. In June, F-Series sales rose by 28.6 percent while Silverado sales fell 3.7 percent. Through the first half of the year, the F-Series is enjoying double-digit growth. Not so for the Silverado, as sales are off 0.8 percent for the year. Consumers appear to be ignoring the Chevrolet ad.

Cadillac XT5.

Two new models are lifting the Cadillac brand.

2. New Cadillac models are on sale, reviving the brand. Cadillac has a pair of new models to show for it: the XT5 crossover and the CT6 sedan. The Cadillac XT5 is the replacement for the SRX, while the CT6 is the all-new flagship for GM’s luxury brand. As expected, sales of the XT5 are running strong and have already helped the Cadillac brand reverse course. Brand sales are still down through the first half of 2016 (9.5 percent), but the new models may go far in helping Cadillac regain lost market share.

3. Buy a car, save a great deal of money. Car sales continue to fall, dropping 11 percent in June alone. Shoppers have made it clear they prefer utility vehicles and pickup trucks over coupes, sedans, hatchbacks, and wagons. Unless you are absolutely set on a certain body style, you may be overlooking some tremendous deals on cars. Even before incentives are considered, the smallest utility vehicles start around $20,000 and that’s about $5,000 more than the smallest cars. But that’s only part of the story — many models such as the Ford Fiesta offer cash back in addition to 0 percent financing. Choose a slow selling model such as the Hyundai Elantra, a compact sedan, and you may qualify for $2,750 in discounts for a car priced from $17,250.

4. Jaguar and Land Rover are a force to be reckoned with. The UK’s twin Jaguar and Land Rover brands are on fire, lighting up sales and at a pace far ahead of the competition. Combined sales are up 18.7 percent through June with the Jaguar brand up 40.3 percent alone. Two new models, the XE sedan, and the first-ever SUV — the F-PACE — are unleashing the cat. Land Rover has long outsold Jaguar by 4-to-1 in the US, but the greater momentum is with this traditional car brand. Don’t be surprised if the F-PACE is followed quickly by a second SUV, slotting in above the current one. Other manufacturers need to take notice: the two quintessential British brands are winning new customers and often at their expense.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG Coupe

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG Coupe.

5. Mercedes-Benz leads the luxury pack. Among luxury makes, three brands are constantly vying for top honors: BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz. All three have taken the top crown in recent years, but this year Mercedes-Benz is pulling away from the pack. Mercedes’ sales are flat through June 2016 as it has sold just 39 more cars to date than last year. The luxury segment is getting slapped as car shoppers turn away from cars and to utility vehicles. Still, sales are slipping over last year. BMW sales are down 9 percent and the brand has sold nearly 25,000 fewer vehicles to date than Mercedes-Benz. Lexus is also down (4.6 percent), but with just 2,000 fewer sales than BMW. Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Audi, Infiniti, and Volvo are among the luxury brands gaining market share.

6. We’re seeing signs of plateauing. Automakers love to paint rosy pictures and offer upbeat predictions. They have to, otherwise shareholders will take them to task. After bottoming out in 2009, US auto sales have risen year over year since. It isn’t common to see sales rise constantly from one year to the next for more than five years. Sales are up 1.1 percent through June, so we’re on pace for our seventh consecutive year of increases. Still, there are troubling signs out there as brands such as Mazda, Toyota, Chevrolet, and Mini are down year to date. Toyota may be the most surprising of the four as it adjusts to decreased demand for its bread-and-butter Camry as well as for its hybrids. Are we seeing the first signs of a recession in this election year? You need to go back eight years to September 2008 for when markets began to slide.

2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

The Toyota RAV4 is now the best-selling utility vehicle in the US.

The Race to Year’s End

To finish in positive territory this year, automakers must count on two things: 1), the financial markets remaining stable, and 2), consumer interest staying strong. If the first becomes unstable, it will immediately affect the second. At the same time, consumers may delay their purchases if they even get a whiff of potential instability. This year’s election cycle is an important one and if the candidates stoke fear or instability, the markets will undoubtedly react.

GM Seeks to Breath New Life Into the Cadillac ATS

June 30, 2016 by admin 4 Comments

Cadillac’s BMW beater has fizzled.

2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe.
2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe.

Nearly four years have come and gone and the Cadillac ATS has failed to meet expectations. Once heralded as the first true small luxury car from GM’s luxury brand, the ATS was supposed to take it to the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Instead, Cadillac’s entry-level line has seen its sales slide every year since its introduction.

Two Engine Choices

For 2017, the ATS will return, but with some important changes. Chief among them is discontinuing the model’s current base 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine, a normally aspirated power plant found in more pedestrian models such as the Chevrolet Malibu. That engine made 202 horsepower and 191 foot-pound of torque.

Cadillac will continue with the ATS’ other two engine choices — a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder and a normally aspirated V-6 displacing at 3.6 liters. The turbo makes 272 horsepower with an output of 295 foot-pounds of torque. The V-6 is rated at 335 horsepower and 285 foot-pounds of torque.

The turbo comes paired with either a 6-speed manual (rear-wheel drive only) or an 8-speed automatic transmission. The V-6 continues with the automatic only.

Combatting Declining Sales

Other changes will have everything to do with prices and trim packages. According to Automotive News, GM’s goal is to give the ATS more value without damaging residuals. Across the board, luxury car model sales have suffered extensively in the past year or two as consumers continue their wholesale shift to utility vehicles. Even the benchmark setting 3 Series has recorded double-digit declines.

With the turbo now the standard engine, the base price of the ATS will rise and come in slightly higher than the BMW. Instead of cutting prices, customers will find better-equipped models.

Indeed, the focal point of ATS’ group of advanced technologies is the Cadillac User Experience or CUE, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with advanced smartphone integration and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Beginning with 2017, these features are standard across the model line.

ATS and CTS Trim Levels

The ATS’ trim levels are also shuffled for 2017. Currently, customers can choose between Standard, Luxury, Performance, and Premium editions. For 2017 ATS, Luxury, Premium Luxury and Premium Performance trims are available. Other changes bring in a Carbon Black sport package, a pair of new exterior patinas, and new wheels.

Move up the product line one place and you’ll find the CTS. This model will also benefit from changes for 2017, including a new grille design upfront and an updated fascia at the rear marked by vertical exhaust orientation and valance panel modifications. Trim level changes accompany the 2017 CTS too — CTS, Luxury, Premium Luxury, V-Sport and V-Sport Premium. Cadillac says the changes are in line with what its two all-new models provide — the XT5 crossover and the CT6 sedan.

2017 Cadillac Line

For 2017, the Cadillac product line is composed of the following cars: ATS, CTS, XTS, and CT6. The ATS is composed of sedan and coupe models; the other three are sedans only. Both the ATS and CTS offer high-performance “V” lines. The plug-in hybrid electric ELR coupe has been discontinued.

As for utility vehicles, the XT5 replaces the previous SRX. The only other model is the Escalade, a model Auto Trends is currently evaluating and will publish a review next week.

Looking beyond the current models, a plug-in hybrid version of the CT6 sedan is in the works and will arrive in early 2017. Beyond that, any new models will be composed entirely of utility vehicles as Cadillac seeks to catch up with market changes as well as to match what its competitors are offering.

Competitively Priced: 2017 Cadillac XT5

February 11, 2016 by admin 5 Comments

Latest Cadillac model brings utility to the midsize segment.

2017 Cadillac XT5
The first-ever 2017 Cadillac XT5 luxury crossover is the cornerstone of a new series of crossovers in the brand’s ongoing expansion. The first-ever XT5 premiered in November 2015 at the Dubai and Los Angeles auto shows and arrives on the market in April.

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 arrives in showrooms this April, inaugurating a new naming convention for GM’s luxury marque. The model is all-new and serves as the successor for the outgoing SRX. Importantly, Cadillac has priced the neoteric SUV from $39,990 (includes $995 destination charge) with the top-of-the-line model retailing for $63,495.

GM announced the XT5’s pricing on Wednesday with about two months remaining before its on sale date arrives. The new model arrives as the market for all things SUV explodes, especially in the luxury theater where manufacturers can’t seem to build enough of them.

New Naming Convention

The XT5 name signals that future SUV models will each start with “XT” then follow with a numerical representation. Similarly, on the car side, Cadillac has chosen the “CT” appellative for its coupes and sedans. Thus, the all-new full-size CT6 will commence the nomenclature change for cars when it arrives this spring just ahead of the XT5. Cadillac, however, will phase in the change over several years as each model is updated or replaced.

As for the midsize Cadillac XT5, its price comes in below most of its competitors, including the Audi Q5, Lexus RX, and the BMW X4. However, that price is about $800 above the base Lincoln MKX and slightly above the price Mercedes-Benz is asking for the GLC-Class.

Four Trim Levels

Four trim levels accompany the 2017 Cadillac XT5. The range-topping Platinum is followed by Premium, Luxury, and Base models. Customers will have a choice of seven exterior colors as well as seven distinct interiors. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available.

Upgrades include Cadillac’s proprietary rear camera mirror system on Platinum models. The system ties in with Cadillac CUE, the brand’s infotainment system and offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Active fuel management with engine stop/start technology should combine to enhance fuel economy.

Under the hood, a 3.6-liter, V-6 engine making 310 horsepower and 270 foot-pound of torque drives this SUV. It comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission with electronic precision shift for the first electronically controlled transmission utilization in a Cadillac conveyance.

Available Twin-Clutch All-Wheel Drive

Optionally available an all-new for 2017 is a “twin clutch” all-wheel drive system designed to steadily and recurrently provide optimum traction regardless of the current road conditions. That means up to 100 percent of the available torque may be sent to either the front or rear axle, as needed.

Further, that power can be sent to either wheel. Indeed, this package should be most beneficial when there is more water, ice or snow on one side of the SUV than on the other. Eventually, the technology should spread across Cadillac’s utility vehicle line.

Vision 2020

With two models coming in and one on its way out (ELR), Cadillac is poised to revamp and expand its entire product line. Within four years, every model will have been changed and gain new nomenclature in the process.

If Cadillac’s new way catches on, it’ll be better positioned to battle the middle brands in the luxury segment. Audi, Acura, and Infiniti are Cadillac’s nearest sales competitors in the US. BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz are part of the top tier, with Lincoln, Porsche, Land Rover, Volvo, and Jaguar also competing. Moreover, it will have a better mix of products to compete in other markets, including China, where it may eventually find its largest customer base.

Buick Renaissance: Yet Another Riviera Teaser?

January 12, 2016 by admin 1 Comment

Buick teases a second concept in as many years. Will GM’s premium brand build it?

Buick Avista concept.
Buick Avista concept makes its global debut in Detroit.

Rumblings of a surprise Buick reveal just ahead of the press days for the 2016 North American International Auto Show (Detroit Auto Show) suddenly grew loud on Sunday morning.

GM’s premium brand had not only had made known its plans to debut its imported-from-China Buick Envision compact SUV, but the company said a second model would also be introduced. In particular, rumors of exactly what that model might be were shared on Saturday and soon raised social media chatter to a near fevered pitch.

Would the unseen model be the production version of the Avenir concept introduced at the 2015 show? Or, was Buick planning to bring back the Grand National popularized in the late 1980s? Those were the two dominant reports, but in the end, neither one panned out.

Buick Avista Concept

Instead, Buick introduced the Avista concept, a model that shares its platform with two other GM vehicles — the Chevrolet Camaro and Cadillac ATS. The 2+2 concept coupe effectively accomplishes two things: it reinforces the brand’s new styling direction and it points to a time when coupes such as the Grand National and the Riviera were important models in the Buick lineup.

Like the Avenir, the Avista may never be built. If it is, let’s hope that the name disappears — the same should be said for the Avenir.

Buick certainly has a strong history of wonderful model names that could be resurrected. Some people contend that the concept *is* the Grand National. If so, then it would represent a clean departure from the Regal, the same model the original rear-wheel drive Grand National was based on. The current Regal is a different vehicle entirely — front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available. Moreover, the North American-spec Regal is based entirely on the Opel Insignia.

Why Not Riviera?

Choosing the Riviera name seems like the better choice. The Avista is both elegant and sporty, just as was the Riviera of lore. Based on a 110.7-inch wheelbase, the coupe would come in slightly smaller than the LaCrosse, but larger than the Regal. Earlier Riviera models were full-size, then were gradually downsized.

Under the hood is a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V-6 engine making 400 horsepower, the same engine slated to power the upcoming Cadillac CT6 sedan. The engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

With proportions aligning close to the Chevrolet Camaro, the Avista concept should be blistering fast, rivaling the performance of certain Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus rivals, but perhaps without the exorbitant price.

Wave-Like Appearance

The Avista’s countenance is powerful and confident with sweeping body lines from stem to stern. It has an aggressive stance and its wide track and 20-inch wheels point to a formidable model.

That same flowing expression is found inside as uninterrupted lines, state-of-the-art seats, and an advanced center console are present.

“Waves, whether from the sea or in the sand, are all about motion and flow,” said Bryan Nesbitt, executive director Global Buick Design. “That’s exactly what this concept is all about – flowing design and the purity of the driving experience.”

The social media buzz following the Avista’s reveal was overwhelmingly positive. Indeed, the majority of pundits hope that the coupe will be built, although some people seem hung up on the model name. That Buick has shown us two rear-wheel drive concepts in the space of a year, strongly suggests that a high-end or halo model will be built.

Finding its Place

Buick’s survival following GM’s 2009 bankruptcy was questioned by many, especially as its continued existence came at the expense of Pontiac. But then, Pontiac wasn’t a brand known outside of North America, while Buick has enjoyed a strong following in China where most of its products are sold.

Whether designed exclusively for North America or with a more global audience in mind, a rear-wheel drive Buick coupe might stir more interest in GM’s premium brand than anything else to date. And unlike the Opel-derived Verano, Regal and Cascada models or its fleet of SUVs and the LaCrosse sedan, this model’s DNA is American performance, an entirely beneficial attribute at that.

Astonishingly Low Price Point for the High-End 2016 Cadillac CT6

November 2, 2015 by admin 7 Comments

All-New Cadillac CT6 is Priced From $53,495.

Cadillac CT6

The CT6 at its New York debut.

When the all-new Cadillac CT6 debuts next March, it will come with something a few other recent debuts from GM’s luxury marque have lacked: a low price point.

Indeed, with a starting price of $53,495, the Cadillac CT6 will undercut prices for competing models from BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz, and it will even come in lower than the budget Hyundai Equus. Cadillac announced model line pricing for its top-end CT6 today, including for its highest level Platinum edition.

Three Engine Choices

The 2016 Cadillac CT6 will offer three engine choices — a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder with rear-wheel drive and priced from $53,495 is the standard engine. A model equipped with a 3.6-liter, normally aspirated V-6 engine with all-wheel drive will have a starting price of $55,495. And a CT6 powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter, V-6 engine with all-wheel drive will start at $64,395. All three engines come paired with 8-speed automatic transmissions.

The top-of-the-line CT6 Platinum model, equipped with all the bells and whistles this model has to offer, will retail from $83,465. Prices for a separate CT6 plug-in-hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) will be announced later.

Cadillac’s CT6 pricing strategy follows a pricing blunder with its ELR PHEV coupe. That model, underpinned by the same platform powering the Chevrolet Volt, initially retailed for $75,000 when it made its debut in 2014. Minuscule sales led to huge discounts before Cadillac reset the ELR’s pricing. No 2015 edition was built; the 2016 ELR is priced from $65,000 and has more standard features too.

Cadillac CT6

The CT6 takes to the streets of Manhattan.

New Naming Convention

The CT6 introduces a fresh approach to the luxury market for GM as well as a new naming convention for Cadillac. Going forward, new car models will assume the CT designation followed by a number. As for utility vehicles, the XT designation will be utilized beginning next year when the Cadillac XT5 (formerly the SRX) debuts.

“The CT6 is an entirely new approach to prestige luxury, adding driving dynamics and technology while reducing the bulk of traditional large sedans,” said Johan de Nysschen, president of Cadillac. “With the CT6, Cadillac has a competitive edge: our use of advanced lightweight construction and innovative technology, it is prestige luxury reimagined.”

Cadillac currently utilizes the CT6’s base turbo engine in its compact ATS and midsize CTS lines. The 3.6-liter V-6 is the same size as a previously used motor, but it is all new. With its 335-horsepower rating, the V-6 is one of the most power dense naturally aspirated engines in this segment.

Luxury buyers will also take note of the twin turbo 3.0-liter V-6 that will flash this sedan’s performance side. Although it doesn’t attempt to match the high performance of Cadillac’s V-Series models, its 400 horsepower and 400 foot-pounds of twist should make this model a strong performer. Combine this small, but powerful engine with the sedan’s rigid, but lightweight architecture and it should challenge the established players from the onset.

Cadillac CT6

Streaming video comes to the Cadillac CT6.

CT6 Technological Attributes

Technology will also be at the forefront of what the Cadillac CT6 has to offer. For example, streaming video will be added to the function of the rear mirror, removing such obstructions as the roof, rear pillars, and headrests to improve the driver’s vantage point by 300 percent.

Further, luxury manufacturers attempt to outdo one another with audio systems and the Cadillac CT6 seeks to set a new benchmark in the music enjoyment department. Specifically, Cadillac will utilize a 34-speaker Bose® Panaray® audio system, designed exclusively for the sedan. Bose claims the system “reproduces music with more clarity, precision and deep bass than any system preceding it.”

Reviving the Marque

Lastly, the CT6 and XT5 cannot come soon enough for Cadillac as brand sales are down 4.6 percent year-to-date through September. Many of its competitors are enjoying double-digit sales increases again this year. For its part, Cadillac is avoiding the deep discounting that it has pursued in the past in a bid to maintain market discipline.

Crumbling Chevrolet Sonic Sales Leads to Layoffs

October 27, 2015 by admin 1 Comment

Small car segment battered by low fuel prices.

Orion Chevrolet Bolt.
Orion plant will begin production of the Chevrolet Bolt for 2017.

Arguably, Chevrolet has the strongest line up it has ever presented in the US market, with solid entries ranging from the full-size Impala to the diminutive Spark. Truck and SUV sales are a bigger factor than ever before, giving the bow tie brand a solid product line from top to bottom.

But not all models are succeeding as consumers continue to make the shift to trucks and SUVs, and at the expense of small cars. Indeed, sales for the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic have fallen by 35 percent year-to-date through September, after rising 9.2 percent in 2014. Gas prices trending toward $2 per gallon is one reason why sales have dropped.

Orion Township Layoffs

Plunging sales mean GM has had to rethink its production plans. To that end, workers manning the second shift at its Orion Township (Michigan) plant will lose their jobs in January. The plant makes the subcompact Sonic as well as the compact Buick Verano, the latter seeing its sales fall by 27 percent through September.

The Orion plant has benefited from $962 million in upgrades since 2010, including $405 million in the past year alone as the automaker readies production of the Chevrolet Bolt, a small pure electric model. The start of production for the new model is months away. In the meantime, GM must align both production and its workforce with demand.

Hamtramck Expands to Accommodate New Cadillac Model

As difficult as layoffs are in the auto industry, this one comes with a silver lining — affected workers will be able to transfer to the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant 35 miles south of Orion. That plan will double its workforce in 2016 by adding 1,200 hourly and salaried jobs as it brings on a second shift. Hiring is currently underway and soon to be displaced Orion workers have an opportunity to find new jobs.

Hamtramck currently builds the Chevrolet Volt, Impala and Malibu as well as the Cadillac ELR on a single production line. Beginning early in 2016 it will start production of the all-new Cadillac CT6. Like Orion, Hamtramck has also received upgrades over the past six years to the tune of $1 billion.

Shrinking Chevrolet Sonic Sales

The Chevrolet Sonic, previously sold as the Aveo, is available as a 5-door hatchback or as a 4-door sedan. Introduced in 2012, GM has not announced plans for a new model yet. The automaker may be waiting out the market to determine if future demand warrants such an investment.

Other automakers appear to be in the same wait and see mode, including Kia with its Rio. Introduced in 2012, Rio sales have fallen nearly as much as the Sonic and are down 31 percent through the same nine-month period. Notably, Ford Fiesta, Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and Hyundai Accent sales are up for the year. In addition, the Scion iA, an all-new model introduced in September, is showing strong sales out of the gate.

New Buick Verano Planned

Orion’s other model, the Buick Verano, is coming to the end of its first generation run. An all-new model is slated to arrive in 2016 for the 2017 model year, a vehicle that shares its underpinnings with the Opel Astra and Chevrolet Cruze. The new Verano is already on sale in China where both a hatchback and GS editions are now offered. There is no word on whether the US market will receive either new edition.

Sales of another small GM car, the Chevrolet Cruze are also off year-to-date. However, a new model arrives in Chevrolet showrooms this fall, one that is expected to be more competitive in a segment led by the Toyota Corolla followed by the Honda Civic.

7 Headliners at the 2015 New York Auto Show

March 30, 2015 by admin 5 Comments

The 2015 edition of the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) begins this week, with the public show running from April 3 through 12. This writer is on his way to the Big Apple to attend dozens of news conferences and related events, and will share his findings here as well through Twitter (@theautowriter) and Facebook.

The New York show promises to have its fair share of hoopla to conclude the North American portion of the auto show circuit for the season. To that end, Auto Trends has identified seven headliners that will most likely be major newsmakers this week.

1. Cadillac CT6 Unveiled

Over the past few years, Cadillac has teased us with a pair of concepts — Ciel and Elmiraj — that have strongly hinted at the direction GM’s luxury brand might take. Long rumored that a six-figure, range-topping model was in the mix, confirmation of same only came last year.

The all-new Cadillac CT6 is *the* news story of the 2015 NYIAS. It is a five-passenger rear- or all-wheel drive model, designed specifically to do battle with the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and the Lexus LS. Built on an all-new Omega platform, it will be the most advanced model to come from GM, replete with leading-edge technologies and new or updated engines.

2. Scion is Back

Never did this writer think that Scion would be a news story again. Scion, introduced for the 2004 model year, is a Toyota sub-brand aimed at young, first-time buyers. The brand got off to a strong start, but within six years, it faded and has largely become irrelevant. Indeed, a few years back Toyota Motors gave Toyota dealers an option to not sell Scion vehicles. That’s a sure sign your marque is doomed.

Well, Scion is not doomed, at least not in the short term. New York will feature a pair of new models, including a subcompact IA hatchback based on the Mazda2 and a compact IM sedan. These two models plus the FR-S coupe may very well rescue Scion from oblivion.

3. Chevrolet Malibu is Now Relevant

The latest generation Chevrolet Malibu has struggled in an unforgiving segment and after three years, including a rushed second-year refresh, a new model debuts. GM simply could not wait the usual six years to turn this model over and will present a longer and more stylish Malibu in New York.

We have been told that the current model’s biggest problem will be resolved. Specifically, the wheelbase will be stretched by four inches to better accommodate rear-seating passengers. Furthermore, a legitimate hybrid contender will roll out in spring 2016, a full-on hybrid that taps Chevrolet Volt technologies.

4. Lexus RX and Closely-Held Secrets

The best-selling midsize luxury utility vehicle is the Lexus RX. A new model will debut in New York, but not much is known about it. Lexus is determined to maintain its leadership in a segment where Mercedes-Benz, Acura, BMW, Infiniti and Audi are fighting back. Further, an all-new Lincoln MKX is also being readied.

Some content that Lexus has played it safe with the RX and needs to make a bold statement with the new model. We have heard about new powertrains and technologies, but until the cover drops in New York, we really cannot say what those changes will be.

5. Nissan Maxima Already Revealed

Full-size sedans are not what they used to be. Certainly, if customers are shopping for cars, they are more likely to go with a midsize offering. Without doubt, the Nissan Altima has been a strong seller, while the brand’s flagship Maxima is long in the tooth and nearly forgotten.

Well, Nissan hasn’t given up on the Maxima and has been showing us a concept that points to this sedan’s styling direction. Moreover, the sedan’s final look has been shown since the Super Bowl, thus the New York unveil will be rather anticlimactic. However, a few things about the 2016 edition remain unanswered. Will a new engine be offered? Is all-wheel drive an option?

6. Jaguar XF Goes to Flatiron

The Jaguar XF has already been seen, thanks to a cleverly arranged water crossing in London last week. The second generation of this midsize, luxury saloon comes in longer, but lighter than the original. That’s a trend competing models have also been embracing.

Although the Jaguar XF will have its official news conference at the auto show, this model will also be on display in the city’s Flatiron district (23rd and Broadway) on Tuesday, beginning at 11 a.m. As for all the technical specification details, you’ll have to wait until April 1 for that news.

7. New Hyundai Tucson Debuts

Okay, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson was already revealed in Geneva. Further, photos of the North American spec model have been out since February. So, there is not much more to say about this model, at least for right now.
What will be interesting to watch is how well the new Tucson will compete in a segment dominated by the Honda CR-Z, itself all-new for 2016. Moreover, Toyota will debut a RAV4 Hybrid, what should coincide with a major mid cycle refresh for this compact SUV.

New York, New York

Yes, there will be many other news stories in New York, including a handful of surprises. Mitsubishi will show us a new Outlander, Kia will reveal a refreshed Optima and the Aston Martin Vulcan will make its US debut. For this purpose, Auto Trends will share those findings throughout the week.

Will the New V-Series Change Perceptions About Cadillac?

February 12, 2015 by admin 1 Comment

Cadillac has an incessant image problem, one that has not been resolved by introducing a bevy of new models. Indeed, the automaker cannot assemble its traditional full-size Escalade sport utility vehicle fast enough to meet customer demand. A Reuters report published on Tuesday revealed that buyers are snapping up Escalades, while eschewing the European-styled ATS and CTS sedans.

Although the high-priced Escalade is good for the brand’s bottom line, it is the sedans that Cadillac hopes will change buyer perceptions about GM’s luxury brand. The Escalade reeks of “old Cadillac” — dealers, however, are not complaining.

The ATS and CTS are the sedans that GM has designed in a bid to lure luxury car shoppers away from Mercedes-Benz and BMW, to Cadillac. They are not the traditional luxury sedans that have long defined Cadillac, rather both models are “European” in design, performance, handling and craftsmanship.

Lagging Sales Flag Cadillac

Indeed, with traditional rear-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive, the Cadillac duo should at least outperform Audi with its standard front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive models. However, Cadillac sales slid by 6.5 percent in 2014, while Audi sales soared by 15.2 percent as the Volkswagen Group marque experienced its fifth consecutive year of U.S. record sales. Notably, Audi and Cadillac swapped places in 2014 — the German makes ascendancy is expected to continue unabated.

Dealers have been unhappy with their excess inventory of ATS and CTS sedans, models designed to take on the likes of the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, respectively. Both German models are the segment leaders in their corresponding segments and neither has felt the sting of Cadillac innovation. In fact, both lines have solidified their places in the luxury realm.

Deep discounting of 2014 ATS and CTS models will enable dealers to clear their lots. But, that will come at a steep price as residual values for these models will plummet. Individual owners who already bought in and at a higher price point may balk. Even as production of the duo is realigned with market realities, Cadillac is betting that its vaunted V-Series will attract a new breed of owners, beginning with the ATS V-Series followed by the next generation CTS V-Series late this summer.

V-Series: 2016 Cadillac ATS-V

The ATS V-Series will go into production this spring with dealers taking orders right now. The sedan carries a starting price of $61,460 and the coupe is priced from $63,660. The V-Series is the Cadillac equivalent of Mercedes-AMG and BMW’s M line. Thus far, the first model in the line, the CTS-V, has been received with critical acclaim. Ten years of constant refinement have made this sedan into the beast that it is. However, its overall impact on the CTS line hasn’t delivered the corresponding lift that it needs.

In the ATS-V, Cadillac is taking a different approach, utilizing a twin-turbo V-6 instead of the small-block, Corvette-derived V-8 found in the CTS-V. This writer drove a 2014 XTS VSport sedan powered by that very same engine in fall 2013 and enjoyed the potent power it delivered. The XTS and ATS, however, are far different vehicles with the 455-horsepower ATS-V paired with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. That automatic comes with launch control and performance algorithm shift. A 0-to-60 mph time of just 3.9 seconds has already been recorded.

Image is everything in the world of automobiles. That is especially so when luxury and performance intersect. Cadillac will harness the ATS-V to lead it in its motorsport quest. Specifically, a new ATS-V.R racecar will begin the Pirelli World Challenge GT 2015 season on March 7-8 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Cadillac Racing has won the last three races, besting such marques as Porsche, Audi and Ferrari.

Cadillac CT6 Debut

Cadillac is not about to throw in the towel in a bid to woo new customers. Likely, it can forget about convincing
current BMW and Mercedes-Benz owners from making the switch. Those two brands have a lock on their customers and are more likely to lose out to each other or to some other luxury brand than they are to Cadillac.

This April, a third rear-wheel drive model for the Cadillac line will be introduced at the New York International Auto Show. The Cadillac CT6 will rest on the brand’s apex and take on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8, Lexus LS, and BMW’s 7 Series.

In the CT6, Cadillac has promised to unveil semiautonomous driving and other features to set it apart from its competitors. It is a huge gamble for the brand and likely will set the marque’s course for years to come. Failure is unthinkable, but success may elusive as long as persistent perceptions remain unchanged.

Upcoming Cadillac CT6 Will Feature Streaming Video

December 22, 2014 by admin 1 Comment

Display expands rearward vision by 300 percent.

One of the most anticipated new cars from Cadillac is the CT6, a high-end full-size sedan set to debut in late 2016. Parent GM has promised to elevate Cadillac to the top of the mass-produced luxury segment and the new model will help move it in that direction.

We’ve been learning a little bit here and there about the sedan that will take on the likes of the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, Lexus LS and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but much of those details have been shrouded in relative secrecy.

High-Resolution Streaming Video

Last week, Cadillac shared some news to pique interest in the CT6 and that is the inclusion of a high-resolution streaming video to the function of the rear view mirror. Cadillac says that the technology will eliminate the usual sight obstructions drivers face, including front and rear sitting passengers, their head rests, as well as the front, center and rear pillars.

Cadillac claims that the video will provide a vantage point for drivers similar to what is experienced when operating a convertible with its top down. “In addition to the increased field of view, the technology eliminates any rear seat, rear pillar or passenger obstructions, allowing the driver an unimpeded view of the lanes behind and traditional blind spots,” explained Travis Hester, Cadillac CT6 executive chief engineer.

Utilizing a camera with a high dynamic range, the video feed will reduce glare and permit a sharper image in low-light circumstances. That makes for a marked improvement over automatic dimming rear view mirrors.

The video will show up within the mirror and offer a 1280- by 240-pixel TFT-LCD display with 171 pixels per inch and combine that with an HD camera specifically designed to meliorate rear view lane width and to magnify low-light situations.

Eliminating Water Problems

Rain and other water conditions can wreck even the best intentioned plans. Unlike most rear view cameras that become clouded or otherwise obscured due to water, the Cadillac CT6 will make use of a water-shedding hydrophobic coating, applied to the camera to keep it clean under all driving circumstances. This is important, because under foul weather conditions, the benefit of streaming video would likewise be eliminated.

Cadillac acquired 10 patents for its innovative streaming video technology. One patent was received for the streaming video mirror itself; the other nine were for video processing, including glare reduction, dewarping and the camera hardware design.

Video Deactivation Possible

Rest assured, if you buy a CT6 and decide at any time that you don’t want to use the streaming video you will be able to deactivate same by flipping a toggle found on the underside of the rear view mirror. The unit will then immediately transition to an electrochromatic rear view mirror.

The CT6 is a rear-wheel drive model with optional all-wheel drive. The sedan will make use of lightweight materials as well as new body construction techniques to improve vehicle drive dynamics and safety with the added benefit of reducing fuel consumption. It will be built upon an all-new vehicle architecture separate from its other car lines.

When the CT6 debuts, it will also begin a change in Cadillac’s naming convention. All future car models will adopt the new nomenclature when revised models are introduced. This will include the current ATS, CTS and XTS. Crossovers and sport utility vehicles will also gain new names and the transition should be completed by about 2020.
