No Fooling: Mitsubishi Lancer Evo is Toast

April 1, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo: another one bites the dust.

Yesterday, Automotive News reported that the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (Evo) will be discontinued following the end of its product cycle this year, effectively removing the slim chance that this Japanese automaker had in making a go of it in the United States. It probably is just as well too: Auto Trends placed Mitsubishi on its death watch list some time ago, the latest in a string of smaller Japanese manufacturers that have departed or will soon leave the ultra-competitive US market.

Like Suzuki, Mitsubishi will survive globally, relying on growing Asian sales to bolster its business. But, killing off its most desired model (at least for American buyers) speaks volumes about its commitment stateside.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo.
Soon to disappear: Mitsubishi Lancer Evo.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo

What sets the Evo apart from the every day Lancer is, well, nearly everything. Its $34,995 starting price is double that of the standard Lancer, representing a performance model that competes with the Subaru WRX STI. The Evo is outfitted with all-wheel drive, active yaw control, and has an active center differential, a combination that provides superior steering and handling for this front-wheel drive compact sedan.

Under the hood is a 291-horsepower turbocharged four cylinder engine paired with a dual-clutch sport shift transmission. Recaro bucket seats up front and special exterior touches all around demonstrate that this is no ordinary Lancer. Well, say good-bye to the extraordinary!

Philippines Manufacturing Plant

The Evo news came on the very same day that Mitsubishi announced that it had purchased Fords mothballed plant in Laguna, the Philippines, what will replace an aging factory in Rizal reports Reuters. Production is set to begin in Jan. with 50,000 annually and capacity to push to 100,000 units.

Mitsubishi is second behind only Toyota in Filipino sales volume, one of several markets fueling its estimated 1.11 million annual global sales. Mitsubishi believes that its sales will rise by 29 percent over the next three years as a fleet of new truck- and car-based utility vehicles, and vans hit the market. The automaker has also tapped the Renault-Nissan alliance for joint projects to yield several other new models.

Thin US Sales and Profits

In the US, sales continue to tumble with Mitsubishi selling fewer than 50,000 units in 2013. For the first two months of the year, sales are up 1.2 percent in a flat market. Still, the product mix relies heavily on small vehicles and the thinner profit lines that come with it.

Mitsubishi Motors North America was launched in 1981, but its cars were sold stateside for a number of years by the Chrysler Corporation. Indeed, Chrysler began importing its first Mitsubishi model for 1971, under the Dodge Colt moniker. A Plymouth Champ model later joined the line up, replaced a decade later by the Plymouth Colt.

Other earlier Mitsubishi-turned-Chrysler products have included the Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Sapporo, and the Dodge D50 compact pickup truck. That Challenger model had nothing to do with the original nameplate, considered an interloper by performance Dodge Challenger devotees. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evo itself arrived in 1992, with no Chrysler counterpart offered.

Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler

Chrysler continued to sell Mitsubishi products into the 1990s. By 2000, the new DaimlerChrysler entity formed an alliance with Mitsubishi that ended in 2005, following a defect scandal that soured the relationship. That move presaged the Daimler-Chrysler divorce a few years later.

Mitsubishi hasn’t announced (yet) that it is pulling out of the US market. Whether it does so this year or next really does not matter. Car shoppers always vote with their wallets and are choosing competing models from Honda, Volkswagen, Kia, Ford, Toyota, Hyundai, Chevrolet, Nissan, and others instead. Small-time Mitsubishi simply cannot survive in the worlds toughest consumer market, something Suzuki, Isuzu and Daihatsu had figured out as well.

The Five Top Selling Compact Cars of 2013

January 8, 2014 by admin 5 Comments

2014 Honda Civic.
A broad model line keeps the Honda Civic on top.

Compact cars are nearly as popular as midsize models, small front-wheel drive models that typically retail for under $20,000. Also known as C-segment models, these vehicles are produced by every full line manufacturer and are typically sold as sedans with hatchbacks usually part of the mix as well.

2013 Compact Cars

Toyota and Honda have routinely battled for segment supremacy and in recent years fresh challenges from Chevrolet, Ford and Hyundai have brought balance to the segment. Beyond the leaders there are a number of other cars to consider including the Nissan Sentra, Dodge Dart, Volkwagen Golf, Mazda3, and the Kia Forte.

1. Honda Civic. Toyota and Honda are position 1-2 in the midsize segment, but those places are reversed where compact cars are concerned. In 2013, Honda sold 336,180 Civics including 7,719 hybrids. Civic sales rose by more than 18,000 units or 5.7 percent for the year. Following a new design in 2012, Honda launched a significant refresh for 2013 to address several design deficiencies, a move that largely silenced its critics and paid off with increased sales.

Toyota Corolla Compact Car.

Fresh styling marks the 2014 Toyota Corolla.

2. Toyota Corolla. If Hondas hold on the compact segment is threatened, it will come from Toyota. For 2014, a new and larger Corolla was introduced, a model that Toyota expects will challenge the Civic for segment leadership. In 2013, Toyota sold 302,180 Corollas, up 3.9 percent for the year. Unlike the Civic sold in sedan, coupe, hybrid and CNG configurations, Toyota is maintaining its sedan-only focus for its compact model. No word whether Toyota will break out of the box and field additional body styles as in days past.

3. Chevrolet Cruze. The big news for Chevrolet in 2013 is that the Cruze outsold its chief nemesis, the Ford Focus. Chevrolet may not have long to celebrate, however, as Focus ST sales are likely to grow. And with no performance sub-model to respond with directly, Chevrolet will have to rely on it newly available diesel option to stoke Cruze sales. For 2013, Chevrolet sold 248,224 Cruzes, up 4.4 percent for the year, edging the Elantra by just 312 cars sold.

4. Hyundai Elantra. The Sonata still garners the lions share of attention for Hyundai, but Elantra outsold the midsize sedan for 2013. Indeed, Elantra sales enjoyed the largest lift among the top sellers, increasing by 23 percent for the year. With 247,912 units sold, the Elantra is within easy striking distance of the Cruze, itself likely to be overtaken by the Ford Focus. Capacity issues may be the only thing to hold back Hyundais surging star in the coming years.

5. Ford Focus. The Ford brand was the top selling automotive brand in the US in 2013, beating Chevrolet and Toyota. Its Focus compact car has been a big contributor in recent years to help elevate the brand, but for 2013 sales fell by 4.6 percent on 234,570 units sold. You can blame part of that loss on the rise of the subcompact Fiesta and its 25.2 year-over-year sales increase. The next generation Focus is expected to roll out in Europe later this year followed by North America in 2015. Incidentally, both the Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla sell more than 1 million units annually around the world.

Looking Ahead

Stiffer competition among compact car manufacturers will provide consumers with new and better choices in the coming years. An all-new Mazda3 hits the market this year and sales of the Nissan Sentra, Dodge Dart, and Kia Forte continue to grow. Volkswagen will continue with its multi-prong Jetta strategy, marketing its sedan and wagon lines separately while emphasizing its diesel option.

From Serbia With Love: 2014 Fiat 500L

September 23, 2013 by admin 7 Comments

Fiat’s return to the US market in 2011 came by way of its smallest model, the 2012 Fiat 500 hatchback. This mini car line also includes a convertible and a performance Abarth edition, giving Fiat the most model choices in its segment. The segment is a small one and includes the Smart Fortwo, Scions IQ and the Chevrolet Spark.

Beginning this year the 2014 Fiat 500L debuts, a model that is wider and longer than the 500, and built on a separate platform. The Fiat 500L Pop was a recent weekly driver for Auto Trends, a five-passenger front-wheel drive subcompact vehicle.

2014 Fiat 500L

2014 Fiat 500L

The L portion of the 500s name means large and considering the diminutive size of the 500 series, that name describes this vehicle well. What it does not tell you is that the 500L rides on a different platform than the 500, utilizing Fiats compact wide architecture to underpin what is categorized as a subcompact model. Its proportions are telling, coming in at 27 inches longer and six inches wider than the 500. It is a tall vehicle too, closer in look to a tall wagon or an SUV and offering 120 cubic feet of interior volume. Compare that number to the 85 cubic feet found in the Fiat 500.

All Fiat 500Ls are powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine. This engine makes 160 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 184 foot-pounds of torque ranging from 2,500 to 4,000 rpm. A six-speed manual is the only transmission offering with the base 500L Pop. The next two grades, Easy and Trekking, offer the manual or an optional twin-clutch six-speed automatic. The top-of-the-line Lounge reverses that offering. Yes, the model names are odd, but they are also keeping what Fiat offers with the 500.

Fiat 500L Exterior and Interior

At first glance, the resemblance to the Fiat 500 is apparent in the 500L. But, those similarities are most noticeable with its face. Beyond that you’re looking at a wagon-like vehicle, one with extended proportions all around.

Inside, the Fiat 500L benefits from an updated dashboard, a revised instrument panel and a new steering wheel. Its a fairly well appointed model even in base form with steering wheel mounted controls including cruise control standard. The front bucket seats and 60/40 rear split seat are cloth covered, offering sufficient support up front, but not enough thigh support in the rear. The rear seat has three seat belt positions, but it is better suited for two people. Rear leg room is excellent and the head room throughout the cabin means there is ample space for tall drivers.

2014 Fiat 500L

Impressively, Fiat found a way to sate the interior with storage areas including numerous cubbies, netted pockets, storage compartments and in-door storage. That abundance of storage was underscored by both open and covered storage compartments above the glove box, serving up more places to stash your stuff.

All 500L models come equipped with air conditioning, the Lounge edition upgrades this to dual-zone climate control. You also get keyless entry, a tilt and telescopic steering column, UConnect touchscreen radio, power windows and door locks, power heated side mirrors, cloth bucket seats, USB ports, and cruise control. Model upgrades bring in heated seats, higher end audio systems, a 115-volt outlet, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a dual-pane power sunroof, navigation fog lamps, a rear armrest with upholders, and larger wheels. The two-color exterior paint scheme featured in the first photo is available with the Trekking edition.

There were two demerits that should be noted: 1) the in-door pockets are large enough to hold water bottles, but not shaped to keep them in place, and 2) the sun visors do not extend far enough out to block the sun beaming through the side windows. The first demerit represents a minor issue as there are center area cup holders available. The second demerit could prove to be a hazard at certain times of the day.

On the Road

As my good fortune would have it, I had a week to partake in much clutch pushing and stick shifting with the Fiat 500L Pop. Manual transmissions continue to fade away, with many model lines equipped only with automatics. My wife probably represents the thinking of a vast number of drivers when she admitted that they were too much work. I enjoy them, but in heavy traffic they tend to get old. Imagine getting a muscle spasm at the wrong time!

Still, the Fiats six-speed manual combined with a turbocharged four cylinder engine provided plenty of pep and became an exercise in finding the correct gear for the right driving conditions. I wont hash out my entire findings other than to say that leaving the transmission in fourth gear at speeds up to 50 mph and in fifth gear up to 65 mph makes passing easy. I discovered that if I shifted to sixth gear too early, the RPMs dropped sharply and the car lagged. That also meant I was downshifting to find the right gear at various times while on the highway when traffic was building.

Its peppiness aside, the Fiat 500L handles well too. The low-rolling resistance tires, however, took much getting used to as its grip seemed to slip when shifting on some road surfaces. In my area, the clay soil tends to seep out onto road surfaces when it rains. Once dry, it leaves behind silty patches that can contribute to spin out. You can upgrade to the optional Goodyear Eagle tires.

Making An Impression

Priced from $19,100, the 2014 Fiat 500L makes a positive impression. It was also one of the most inquired about vehicles from people that I know including my neighbors who get to witness my weekly switch over of press fleet vehicles. Across the board, its looks were positively received, even admired, not withstanding my remarks that the Italian Fiat 500L is assembled in Serbia while the smaller 500 is built in Mexico. It seems that vehicle origin is just not that important to most people these days.

Growing up, we used to call Fiats Fix It Again, Tony for its frequent habit of breaking down. The new crop of Fiats are much more refined, stylish and fun to drive, offering a worthy vehicle for first time new car buyers or a solid second car for some families.

List of Best Compact Cars for 2012

January 10, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

2013 Toyota Corolla S

The compact car segment has strengthened in recent years as new models enter the fray, contending with established leaders including the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. These days, every major manufacturer has a stake in the segment with the Dodge Dart the most recent entry to hit the market.

For 2012, the auto trends we have been observing continue to point to increased sales for compact cars that are usually sold in sedan and hatchback body styles. These vehicles usually are priced from about $16,000 and are powered by small, efficient in-line four-cylinder engines. Manual and automatic five- or six-speed transmissions are typically used; each model is front-wheel-drive and offers seating for up to five occupants.

Beyond the top sellers, we will take a look at a number of also-rans for the calendar year.

1. Honda Civic. For 2012, the Honda Civic pushed past the Toyota Corolla to achieve the best selling compact car in America title. Introduced in 1973, the Civic has been updated, enlarged and redesigned numerous times. Its most recent design update was panned by critics, but that hasn’t stopped shoppers from flocking to a car prized for its reliability and value. Sales rose by 43.7 percent in 2012 to 317,909 units, demonstrating that Honda has put the horrors of a March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in its rearview mirror.

2. Toyota Corolla. Corolla not only loses its leadership in the US market, it apparently has seen its global edge erode too. While the Honda Civic is on top of the heap stateside, the Ford Focus is now the best selling car in the world, supplanting the Corolla. Corolla and Toyota Matrix sales are combined for reporting purposes with those sales up by 21.1 percent over 2011. Toyota sold 290,947 of its compact models in 2012.

3. Ford Focus. Unlike Honda and Toyota whose 2011 sales were suppressed by a natural disaster, sales of the Ford Focus rose naturally in 2012. Ford claimed a 40 percent increase in sales for its compact sedan and hatchback, selling 245,922 Ford Focus models in 2012. The Ford Focus is also now the best selling model in the world, with about 1 million units sold in 2012.

4. Chevrolet Cruze. Sales of the Chevrolet Cruze rose by 2.1 percent to 237,758 units, but that wasnt enough to keep this vehicle from being surpassed by the Ford Focus. The fifth-place leader, the Hyundai Elantra is closing in, but with a diesel model in the offing this year, the Chevrolet Cruze should continue to enjoy strong sales again in 2013.

5. Hyundai Elantra. Much credit must be given to Hyundai for bringing multiple winning models to the market in recent years. Despite its fuel economy dust-up, sales of the Hyundai Elantra rose by 8.4 percent in 2012, topping 200K units for the first time. Some 202,034 sales were registered in 2012, helping Hyundai beat out larger competition including Nissan, Volkswagen and Dodge.

Also Rans

The Volkswagen Jetta is a trusted vehicle and again nearly 150,000 units were sold in 2012, representing this German manufacturers top model by far. Other players worth a look include the Dodge Dart, Nissan Sentra, Kia Forte, and the Mazda Mazda3, compact hatchbacks and/or sedans offering great value, reliability and varying trim levels to suit most drivers tastes.

It was 40 years ago when the first Honda passenger vehicle was introduced to the United States. That model, the diminutive Honda Civic, was one of the smallest cars on American roads, quickly gaining a reputation for exceptional build quality and very high fuel mileage. Today, Civic is a larger vehicle and is sold in sedan and coupe body styles. For 2013 this front-wheel-drive model receives a refreshing, a five-passenger compact model that enjoys a considerable and loyal following.
