Contemporary American Graffiti: 2015 Ford Mustang GT

These are heady days for the auto industry as an assortment of muscle cars influence the market. The Ford Mustang is one such model and an international contestant at that.

Few vehicles have ever achieved the historical significance and the signature cachet of the Ford Mustang. Since its introduction on April 17, 1964, at the New York World’s Fair in Queens, New York, the Mustang has achieved iconic stature in the eyes of enthusiasts as well as with most critics.

Clearly, this sport coupe represents America’s youth culture at its best with its unbridled passion; sleek, good looks; and attainability. That you can still get behind the wheel of a new one for under $25,000 reflects the Ford Motor Company’s commitment to keeping this model affordable in a bid to win a new generation of buyers.

And today’s new Ford Mustang buyers are no longer limited chiefly to American and Canadian shoppers. The current generation model (some say sixth generation, others say up to tenth) is now a global product with Ford selling its pony car in more than 100 markets. Ford is able to do this by offering a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder as the base engine together with its naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V-8. North American shoppers also get a third engine choice, a V-6.

The 2015 Ford Mustang has become a global product despite its overall dimensions and weight remaining nearly the same. The big change is in the body style with the coupe roofline replaced with a sleek fastback layout, reminiscent of an earlier design.

For the record, not all Mustang fans are happy about the change in roof style. Early on in the Mustang’s history, Ford offered both traditional coupe and fastback body styles, along with a convertible. But those were the days when it sold more than 400,000 Mustangs per year and could spread out its costs. These days Ford may sell 100,000 units in the US alone.

Familiar Visage, Clean Interior

Mostly everything else about the latest iteration pays tribute to the earlier models with its familiar face and sequential tail lights. But there are significant changes too, including a slightly wider and lower sitting body, signature HID headlamps, air extractor hood vents on the GT, a sportier hood, rocker panel embellishments, new wheels, the list goes on.

Inside, the cabin reflects some changes that the stallion’s fans have been clamoring for, including a sunglasses holder, memory seats that adjust to the previous recline position, available heated and cooled seats with 6-way power adjustment, and power lumbar support for the driver.

One challenge for tall drivers has not changed — if you are particularly tall, there is no amount of seat adjustment possible that will accommodate you. I’m just under 6-feet tall and had a few inches between the top of my head and the headliner. A friend, who measures 6-feet-4-inches tall, noted with some disappointment that the Mustang is not a fit for him. Eliminating the rear seat or enabling the driver seat to sit lower would help. As for me, the Recaro seat in the Mustang GT was just right.

Allow me to pull back a moment to discuss your 2015 Ford Mustang options. Ford offers eight models or editions ranging from the V6 Fastback ($23,800) to the GT Premium Convertible ($41,800). There are specialty Shelby models available too, but those are marketed separately.

The standard model is powered by a normally-aspirated, 3.7-liter V-6 engine making 300 horsepower and 280 foot-pounds of torque. Across the three-engine lineup, a 6-speed manual transmission is standard and a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is available. The V-6 is available only in the base coupe and convertible models.

A Potent EcoBoost Option

New for 2015, is an EcoBoost 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, making 310 horsepower and 320 foot-pounds of torque. EcoBoost marries direct fuel injection, turbocharging and twin independent variable camshaft timing to “boost” power from a small footprint. This engine appears in three models.

And back and better than ever before is the 5.0-liter V-8 engine that some insist is “the” engine for the Ford Mustang, making a robust 435 horsepower and 400 foot-pounds of torque, as it benefits from larger intake and exhaust valves, new cylinder heads, revised high-flow ports and new intake and exhaust camshafts with increased lift.

A 2015 Ford Mustang GT was my prize for one week this April, but it nearly did not make it. Six months of personally trying to wrest any Mustang from the press fleet, including an EcoBoost Premium Fastback, failed. Quite suddenly, a GT Coupe Premium Fastback edition adorned in deep impact blue metallic with ebony Recaro leather seats appeared, ending the stalemate.

The GT’s arrival also completed a circle encompassing rival models, including a Chevrolet Camaro convertible driven in Fall 2013 and a Dodge Challenger Core last summer. Sorry to disappoint some of you who want me to take sides — I won’t. Instead, you will hear me calling this the “second golden age” for the muscle car market. This exhilarating epoch may not last, so enjoy these three models while they do.

Slipping behind the GT’s steering wheel, I immediately took in everything this coupe had to offer. Manual transmission? Check. Pointless rear seat? Check. Engine start/stop button? Yes, and circled in red. Oil and vacuum pressure displays at the top of the center stack? Absolutely. Aluminum pedals, launch control, selectable drive modes and electronic line lock — check X four. Is that carbon fiber covering the lower dashboard? You bet!

My comfort was never an issue for my week tenure. Indeed, one thing I have found about Recaro seats is that the bolstering, back, hip and thigh support is excellent. The seating position and the sight lines were ideal — two issues that not every two-door coupe gets right.

Launch Control and a Manual Gearbox

Kudos to Ford for not making the instrument panel a calamity. What you have here are two circular ports fixed like sentries on either side of the panel. To the left is the tachometer. To the right is the speedometer. At the center is the digital driver’s information center with the usual data supplied, including launch control.

Additional props should be given to Ford for not just keeping the manual transmission alive, but making it available across the model line. This shifter is of the short-throw variety, lending near effortless moves up and down through the gear range. The GT’s off-the-mark acceleration is terrific and the V-8 delivers power in spades.

Handling changes are evident too, as you have a smaller diameter steering wheel to work with and a three steering wheel modes — comfort, sport and standard. The cornerstone of the new model is the Mustang’s new independent rear suspension, what manages body roll and better pitch control, especially noticeable on your favorite twisty roads or on the track.

The front suspension is all-new too with double-ball-joints for optimum driving dynamics. The benefit of the new design is larger brakes with no impact on steering feel. I’ve been told my Mustang enthusiasts — the very people who KNOW, live and breath the model — that the 2015 model is the best handling one yet, no question.

Ford also delivers selectable drive modes — normal, snow/wet, sport+ and track. For example, with the sport+ mode, you get more responsive steering and throttle response and if with automatic transmission-equipped models, the shift points are adjusted for the times you’re navigating serpentine roads and with vigor.

This Mustang also feels light on its feet (or wheels) although its overall weight has not changed. The GT comes in around 3,700 pounds, but that’s a few hundred pounds below what comparable Camaro and Challenger models offer.

Where older models shined on the straight away — this one goes beyond and handles curvilinear stretches with ease. No fighting with the steering wheel. No praying that the back wheels will not slip out from underneath you. The new Mustang has arrived and it is certainly ready for the international spotlight.

From Dearborn to the World

No car is perfect and the Mustang does have a few faults. The back seat is likely in place solely for insurance purposes, but is mostly unusable unless you are short and your unfortunate rear seat passengers are small. Ford’s infotainment system continues to disappoint — we’re still a model year away from the release of SYNC 3, what promises to be a much more intuitive color display panel.

But the improvements are many and more than offset the few shortcomings. Indeed, you will find much less plastic, more metal, chrome toggle switches, new door pulls, a wider application of stitching and a larger Mustang emblem on the steering wheel. In all, you have a model that should please long-term owners and reach out and find acceptance by the global enthusiast community.

Recalibrated SUV: 2015 Ford Expedition

For 2015, the Ford Expedition continues with its traditional body-on-frame construction. Several updates, including a turbocharged V-6 engine, give this vehicle a lease on life. A more comprehensive revision is needed, one that may still be two or three years away. Sales, however, have not suffered for this big SUV.

Full-size, traditional body-on-frame sport utility vehicles were supposed to have been on the way out and for a few salient reasons: they typically are less fuel efficient than unibody crossover utility vehicles, and offer smaller cabin space than CUVs. Furthermore, they also consume more gasoline than commensurable models.

However, body-on-frame SUVs provide superior towing capabilities. Therefore, such vehicles have received a reprieve in the past year, especially as gas prices have fallen to almost half the rate drivers were paying just a few years ago. As one result, Ford Expedition sales rose by 16.4 percent to 44,632 units in 2014 and are up 10 percent through March 2015. Moreover, sales should approach 50,000 units for a model that once looked as if it were on the way out just a few years ago.

The Ford Expedition, along with its upscale Lincoln Navigator sibling, were refreshed for the 2015 model year. Both full-size SUVs are based on the same platform released in 2007, what makes for a long model run for these vehicles.

Ford could have brought forth a fourth generation Expedition, but the automaker has poured its resources into producing an all-new, aluminum-bodied Ford F-150. That verdict effectively allows Ford to buy itself some time, perhaps another three years before extending the current F-150’s platform to the Expedition.

Given that Ford rolled out an update, the changes for the Ford Expedition are not comprehensive, but are still noteworthy.

Exterior and Interior Updates

The most significant changes begin with the exterior, with an updated and more pronounced front fascia. However, from pillar to pillar the look is unchanged and the Expedition’s visage has aged. Indeed, place the Ford Expedition next to its chief rival, the Chevrolet Suburban, and the Chevy is easily the more modern looking of the two.

Inside, the cabin is refreshed and provides space for eight. An extended wheelbase version, the EL, adds no room to the cabin space, but extends the storage compartment by a foot. Yet, the cabin is already roomy with seating for two up front and seating for three each in the second and third rows. Ford also allows you to swop the middle row seat for a pair of captain’s chairs.

The 2015 Ford Expedition is priced from $44,585 and is sold in XLT, Limited ($54,180), King Ranch ($58,410) and Platinum ($59,370) editions. Add about $3,000 to the price to obtain a 4×4 model and another $2,650 for the extended wheelbase edition. Available packages and upgrades include a dual-headrest DVD system by Invision ($1,995), the second-row Captain’s chairs ($795), a rear load-leveling suspension ($280) and 22-inch polished aluminum wheels ($2,610). Consequently, your final price could approach $70,000 or just a few thousand dollars below the comparable Lincoln Navigator.

New Technologies and a Quiet Interior

Interior updates include the latest SYNC infotainment system with a MyFord Touch update, what brings in an 8-inch color display for that system. The system also includes a pair of full-color 4.2-inch screens in the instrument gauge.

Available technologies include passive entry with push button start, a Sony audio system, a rear view camera, front and rear parking sensors, ambient LED lighting and Ford apps, the latter useful for trailer towing and off-road driving.

A new leather option package — Brunello leather-appointed seating in red wine with exclusive accents and French-stitching or Ebony seats with gray accents — is also available.

Ford claims that the interior is quieter than ever as the Expedition benefits from sound-deadening materials added to two areas: the headliner and to the door trim panels. Furthermore, new carpeting also absorbs noise. Acoustic glass for the driver and front passenger windows also mitigates sound in all versions above the standard XLT edition.

EcoBoost Engine Technology

Another important change is found under the hood. The big Ford has long represented V-8 power, but for 2015 the aged 5.4-liter V-8 engine making 310 horsepower has been replaced by a turbocharged V-6 engine. That engine, displacing at 3.5 liters, makes 365 horsepower. Two turbochargers, direct fuel injection and variable valve technology combine to optimize horsepower, what Ford calls “EcoBoost” technology. Ford pairs this engine with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The improved power from a smaller footprint results in a boost to fuel economy too. Indeed, where the previous model was rated 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, the 2015 Ford Expedition is rated 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg in the highway. A more modern transmission would have extended that range too, but that’s perhaps a year or two away. Thus, achieving 25 mpg on the highway may someday be attainable, an unthinkable goal for a gasoline engine powering a ponderous SUV.

Ford’s EcoBoost technology has been around for six years. And in every application it has brought more power and better fuel economy to the respective vehicle line. Indeed, with the Expedition, you have strong off-the-mark acceleration with the added boost kicking in at 2,250 RPM. In fact, the 420 foot-pounds of torque offers approximately 20 percent more highway power than the previous model.

The result is a more powerful powertrain combination, one that is more modern and better suited than the previous arrangement. Will you miss the V-8? No, not at all.

Available Continuously Damping System

Another area where the 2015 Expedition has received a much-needed change to the suspension system comes by providing a continuously controlled damping system with three drive modes — comfort, normal and sport. Specifically, this exceptional system automatically adjusts damping by analyzing the vehicle’s weight, the steering feedback and road fluctuations to disburse body and wheel roll to provide a superior ride.

The electric power-assisted steering system is also new, what provides improved maneuverability when driving at low speeds to bolstered up feel at higher speeds. Equally, this translates into ease of steering effort and a more engaging drive.

And as for towing, this SUV offers 6,000 pounds of standard towing capacity, extendable to 9,200 pounds when the optional heavy-duty trailer towing package is selected. On the other hand, Ford’s largest crossover, the Explorer, pulls up to 5,000 pounds. Thus, for the best combination of heavy-duty towing and maximum passenger space and payload, the Ford Expedition wins hands down.

New Engine, Fresh Interior for 2015 Ford Focus

The Ford Focus is an instantly recognizable name, with more than 1 million units sold annually worldwide. Ford has said that the Focus is the best selling vehicle in the world, a claim that Toyota disputes. What is beyond dispute is that Ford is not resting on its laurels as it makes plans to release an important model refresh for 2015.

The 2015 Ford Focus will be released in the second half of this year and will be equipped with a standard rear view monitor and a fully revised interior. It will also offer an optional new engine: a 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine that is currently available with the Fiesta subcompact.

Ford announced its plans for the 2015 Focus at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Monday. About the updated model Joe Hinrichs, Ford executive vice president and president of The Americas said, What makes Focus so attractive to consumers today being great to drive, delivering exceptional fuel economy and value, and offering leading-edge in-car technologies is amplified with the new Focus.

The 2015 Ford Focus will arrive with a refreshed face including a restyled grille and hood, distinctive headlamps and tail lights, an updated lamp cluster, and a restyled trunk lid. For the US market, a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback will be offered.

Inside, the Focus will receive new seat trims, satin chrome detailing, new switches, and an available heated steering wheel. Ford describes the compacts glove box as new and easier to access; a new center console brings in adjustable cup holders.

New Safety Features

Technologies that are not common to the compact segment will be available with the 2015 Ford Focus. Besides the standard rear view camera, customers can choose safety options including lane-keeping assist and blind spot monitoring. All models are equipped with a 4.2-inch color monitor; an 8-inch monitor is included with cars equipped with MyFord Touch.

Ford says that the new Focus will allow drivers to download more than five dozen AppLink-enabled apps from the Apple App Store and the Android market. These apps include real-time data such as acceleration, odometer, and speed. When connected with SYNC AppLink, alerts are available at any time even if the app is not currently active. This means if the driver is listening to her favorite tunes, the app can send out an alert such as warning about a traffic jam down the road.

Three-Cylinder EcoBoost Engine

The current Ford Focus is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. That engine returns in 2015 and will be joined by a 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed transmission.

The smaller engine also brings in gasoline direct injection, variable valve timing, and Ford software enhancements to squeeze more power out of a smaller footprint. In the 2014 Fiesta, the diminutive engine gives the subcompact a 45 mpg highway rating, the top gas mileage for a non hybrid car. At present, the most fuel efficient Focus is rated at 40 mpg on the highway. The new engine should help the Focus deliver at least 43 to 44 mpg on the highway.

Other changes slated for the 2015 Ford Focus includes suspension and chassis upgrades, including a new shock absorber valve design in a bid to provide a quieter interior, an updated rear suspension to help drivers feel more connected to the road, and a new electronic stability program to improve comfort and to reduce intrusion.

The ambitious Focus overhaul eclipses the generational changes seen in some models. What this signals to the world is that Ford is intent at keeping its top model fresh. And with Ford continuing to push hard in developing countries, the long-term outlook for its compact model line is strong.

Ford 1.5-Liter EcoBoost Four-Cylinder Engine

EcoBoost® is a registered trademark for Ford’s line of turbocharged, direct fuel injection and variable valve timing engines, a family of powerplants that pack a lot of punch from a small footprint.

EcoBoost Family

The first EcoBoost engine for North American consumption made its debut in 2009 in large Ford and Lincoln models, a 3.5-liter V-6 motor. That engine is now available in larger cars, trucks and SUVs across the Ford and Lincoln lines, and has since been joined by a pair of four-cylinder engines and one three-cylinder version.

This month, Ford announced plans to build a fifth EcoBoost engine, displacing at 1.5-liters. The newest four-cylinder design features a pair of innovations too: a computer-controlled clutch on the belt-driven water pump and a water-cooled charge air cooler. Ford says that the clutch will reduce engine warm-up times while the air cooler is designed to feed air into the motor more efficiently.

Said Joe Bakaj, vice president, powertrain engineering for Ford. “The new 1.5-liter unit further extends our EcoBoost promise of economical driving in terms of both fuel efficiency and – in some markets – tax savings.” Those tax savings cover engines with a displacement of 1.5 liters and smaller.

Improved Efficiencies

The new engine will also feature an integrated exhaust manifold, a design featured in Ford’s smallest EcoBoost, a 1.0-liter three-cylinder motor. Ford says that its newest motor will provide near equal horsepower as the current 1.6-liter EcoBoost while improving fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions.

The 2014 Ford Fusion will be outfitted with the new engine, likely replacing the standard 1.6-liter EcoBoost now used. Fusion’s other engine choice is a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four and that option is likely to stay in place.

Production of the engine will begin this month in Romania and will be showcased in the all-new Ford Mondeo making its global debut later this month at Auto Shanghai 2013. The Mondeo is sister to the Fusion, a model that is sold in Europe and Asia chiefly.

EcoBoost Penetration

Ford’s intent is to offer EcoBoost engines broadly across nearly every model line worldwide. Since its first EcoBoost was offered in 2009, Ford has sold 600,000 vehicles equipped with its patented engine line.

The three cylinder EcoBoost was introduced in 2012 and promptly won the 2012 “International Engine of the Year” award. We’ll soon see that engine stateside in the subcompact Fiesta and the compact Focus.
