NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

Highlights of the 2015 Detroit Auto Show: Media Day 2, Part 1

January 13, 2015 by admin 3 Comments

Hyundai Santa Cruz

The concept Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup truck.

The first day of the 2015 North American International Auto Show was replete with numerous releases ranging from the expected to the extraordinary. There was so much material distributed that we’ve added a few of those stories to our initial synopsis of the second media day.

Hyundai Pickup Truck

Hyundai-Kia is the fourth largest automobile manufacturer in the world, but like the Volkswagen Group its US presence is smaller than many of its competitors. Both manufacturers have something in common that explains, in part, why their respective market shares are smaller: a lack of a pickup truck offering.

Pickup trucks are popular with consumers, highly profitable for manufacturers and help amplify a brand. Imagine Dodge never having Ram — that Fiat Chrysler (FCA) brand would have disappeared long ago. Instead, Ram is such a strong seller that it is now a brand unto itself.

Hyundai, in the all-wheel drive Santa Cruz Concept, is taking a stab at a market that few are covering today. And that would be a small, unibody pickup truck along the lines of the retired Subaru Brat. Its a niche market that Hyundai identifies as for “Urban Adventurers” or millennial-type buyers who aspire to the utility of a pickup truck along with the ride and handling of a small car.

The Santa Cruz is essentially a car-truck, what the Chevrolet El Camino and Ford Ranchero once were and the Subaru Brat best articulated in modern days. Unlike some models, this one has a rear seat, accessible with is rear-hinged, rear doors. These doors are fully integrated with the front door design, enabling this truck to retain its two-door look.

Hyundai Santa Cruz

Would Subaru Brat fans embrace the Hyundai Santa Cruz?

To the rear, the Santa Cruz showcases an expandable bed for extra utility. The longer cargo space is attained by making use of a special drawer-like sliding function.

Hyundai proposes using a turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel engine, making 190 horsepower and 300 foot-pounds of torque. Theoretically, this truck could achieve 30 mpg, an important efficiency threshold that not one of today’s truck models attains.

Although many concepts are never built, you have to think that Hyundai is seriously weighing its options in a bid to serve a segment it doesn’t currently reach in North America. Certainly, the Santa Cruz is far different from traditional body-on-frame pickup trucks, but it has the potential to fill a void that some people see as having been left open since Subaru ended production of the Brat more than 20 years ago.

Will the Chevrolet Bolt EV Concept become a production reality?

Will the Chevrolet Bolt EV Concept become a production reality?

Chevrolet Bolt EV Concept

With gas prices falling below $2 per gallon in many places, talk about electric vehicles seems almost absurd. Yet, the current price plummet simply will not last — more than likely we will see prices return above $4 per gallon some day.

Car manufacturers cannot afford to be sentimental when it comes to prices at the pump. Indeed, federal fuel regulations require manufacturers to achieve a 54.5 mpg average in 2025 — that’s just 10 years away. Electric vehicles will play no small part in helping manufacturers attain those averages, though the challenge to convince you to purchase an EV is a significant one at that.

General Motors has been busy doing its part in advancing vehicle electrification, chiefly with its hybrid Chevrolet Volt. But it also is knee deep in pure electrification as it has a smattering of EV products of its own.

One of those products is currently in concept form and was introduced at the Detroit auto show on Monday. The Chevrolet Bolt EV concept could be just the vehicle to cajole people to making a switch, especially given its proposed $30,000 price tag and 200-mile range.

Chevrolet Bolt

Bolt + Volt = Chevrolet Vehicle Electrification

What sets the Chevrolet Bolt EV Concept apart from the pack is its mini minivan-like layout, with very little front and rear overhang. It has been designed to maximize interior space and offers seating for four. GM’s designers looked to amplify its interior space for maximum comfort and in the concept, it appears that they have succeeded.

Using glass all around makes this model seem large, even commodious compared to other small vehicles. A high belt line sweeps upward to the D-pillar, what gives this vehicle a look that is at once sporty as it is elegant. In its design, GM made good use of such lightweight materials as magnesium, aluminum, carbon fiber and woven mesh. Moreover, its aerodynamic design plays a significant role in helping this model maximize its efficiency.

In GM’s presentation, the company was big on its conceptual homily, but small on its engineering application. We know nothing about the battery system that allegedly enables this vehicle to attain its 200-mile range, a number that is approximately three times longer than what most current EVs deliver, although it does align with basic Tesla models. Therefore, the only thing we can surmise is that the enhanced battery system is something that GM would like to attain and at a price point consumers would embrace.

Jaguar F-PACE

A full reveal of the Jaguar F-PACE is on its way.

Keeping Pace with the Jaguar F-PACE

You will be forgiven if the name Jaguar F-PACE does not easily roll off your tongue. Not that the pronunciation is difficult, rather that it is one of those names that may bewilder the big cat enthusiast.

The British marque, along with its LandRover consort, have been making great strides in recent years in a bid for relevance. Jaguar LandRover sales are up around the world as parent Tata Motors gives the dynamic duo much room and independence to grow.

In the Jaguar F-PACE we have a model that will go on sale early in 2016, a five-passenger crossover utility vehicle underpinned by the brand’s innovational aluminum architecture and state-of-the-art suspension system.

Based on the Ian Callum’s C-X17 concept car, the F-PACE maximizes cabin space and provides the types of on-road dynamics that luxury utility vehicle buyers prefer. Jaguar offered scant details beyond the show and tell, but we know that the upcoming “performance crossover” will be based on the same platform driving the XE sedan.

Jaguar may seem as if it is crossing into LandRover territory with the utility vehicle, but there is a difference that should be noted. Whereas LandRover’s are designed with off-roading in mind, the F-PACE is designed solely for advancing its on-road antics.

A full reveal is likely this spring at the New York International Auto Show.

Highlights of the 2015 Detroit Auto Show: Media Day 2, Part 2

January 13, 2015 by admin 2 Comments

The size and scope of the North American International Auto Show is often lost upon ordinary visitors. For media folk, the show’s intensity is felt before, during and after the event. Indeed, with manufacturers hosting private reveals on the eve of the show, this two-day media event is actually a three-day event and in some cases longer when private behind-the-scenes interviews and discussions are held post-show.

The second days of the NAIAS had its own share of important news stories. Although the manufacturer portions of the media events were over by noon, the EyesOn Design Awards and the One Show’s Automobile Advertising of the Year Awards were held in the afternoon. Most press people were hurrying to the airport by early afternoon, but for the straggler, the chance to connect with industry movers and shakers remained.

2016 Lexus GS F

The 2016 Lexus GS F debuts in Detroit.

Lexus GS F Sedan

Our last focus on the Detroit auto show is entirely on the key reveals for Tuesday. Among the big, official reveals was the Lexus GS F, a performance model that advances the “F” range.

The rear-wheel drive GS is not the first Lexus sedan to win the F appellation. It joins the IS F sedan and the current RC F coupe. Not to be forgotten is the pinnacle of the F stable: the limited production LFA sports car, a model sated with all the exotic touches you would expect in a super car.

The GS F’s look is familiar, but with a number of important modifications. It features a unique version of Lexus’ trademark hourglass or spindle grille and has large, gaping air vents in the front fascia. Slender LED headlights, signature daytime running lights as well as lower and wider stance help set this F model apart from the GS pack.

Inside, Lexus compares the cabin to a jet fighter cockpit. A “form-follows-function” theme, intuitively placed controls, “F” branded embellishments, and an electronic instrument cluster give this model a special look. Four drive modes are available: normal, eco, sport s and sport s+.

Under the hood of the 2016 Lexus GS F is a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 engine making 467 horsepower and 389 foot-pounds of torque, redlining at 7,300 rpm. This beefy engine is teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The 32-valve V-8 automatically switches to the efficient Atkinson cycle under certain conditions.

Aiding handling are 19-inch Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires that are wider at the rear. Its sport-tuned suspension was put through the paces on the Fuji Speedway as well as on the Nürburgring Nordeschleife. This model features 15-inch front rotors available with bright-orange 6-piston calipers. Importantly, Lexus says that the GS F has a significant handling edge to its European rivals as it weighs approximately 300 pounds less.

2016 Lincoln MKX

The second generation Lincoln MKX debuts this fall.

2016 Lincoln MKX

The Ford brand continues to receive the lion’s share of the auto show buzz and who can blame it? After all, when your pickup truck wins the North American Truck of the Year award and you take the wraps off of a new super car, the Ford GT, the blue oval certainly dazzles.

Quietly making its own impression on the market is Ford’s Lincoln luxury brand, the beneficiary of two new models for 2015 — the MKC crossover and Navigator SUV — and for 2016 the next generation of its medium-sized MKX crossover utility vehicle.

Just before the manufacturer segment of the media days came to a close, Lincoln unveiled the 2016 MKX, the latest iteration of its premium model. The new edition enjoys several changes, including the latest interpretation of the marque’s design language, an all-new engine, several technology updates and available 22-way adjustable front seats.

The new engine, a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6, also powers the 2015 F-150. It is the optional engine for the MKX, making at least 330 horsepower and 370 foot-pounds of torque. A naturally-aspirated 3.7-liter V-6 making 300 horsepower and 280 foot-pounds of torque is standard. Both engines are mated with six-speed automatic transmissions.

The 2016 MKX also benefits from an integral rear suspension, modifications to the body structure as well as to chassis components. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available.

Other changes to the Lincoln MKX include an available 360-degree camera, enhanced park assist, and a 19-speaker Revel Ultima audio system. A pair of Black Label packages with four designer themes will also debut.

The Ram 1500 Rebel unveiled at Detroit's auto show.

The Ram 1500 Rebel unveiled at Detroit’s auto show.

Special Edition Ram 1500 Rebel

Pickup truck manufacturers are on constant watch for niche markets they can serve. One day after the next generation Ford Raptor made its debut, the Ram 1500 Rebel dropped cover.

Ram describes the 1500 Rebel as a “one-of-a-kind off-road design.” It will come equipped with a prominent billet silver “RAM” letter badge affixed to its all-new grille. Instead of the commonly found cross-hair front fascia, the new look showcases a black off-road front bumper design, a billet silver skid plate, new front tow hooks and unique LED fog lamps. This truck will also come with black bezel bi-functional projector headlamps with LED marker lights placed underneath its aluminum, twin-snorkel sport hood.

Other features include an exclusive air suspension to adjust ride height, standard 33-inch tires, a “RAM” stamped tailgate with blacked-out lettering, “Rebel” and “4×4” badging, tail lamps with black bezels and a tri-fold tonneau cover.

Inside, the muscular look continues with what Ram describes as “industry-exclusive seating elements.” Technical grain vinyl seats, Sedoso fabric inserts, light diesel gray accent stitching, Radar Red Ram’s head embroidery affixed to the headrests and other embellishments are present.

The instrument panel is dressed in black, iron gray metallic trim wraps the center console and Radar Red anodized vent rings and door rings are present. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are included.

The Ram 1500 Rebel will be sold in 4×2 and 4×4 configurations with a 3.6-liter V-6 or 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engines available. The brand’s trademark side bed storage compartment, RamBox, is also available.

The new Rebel goes on sale during the second half of 2015 and will join nine other Ram truck editions.

2015 Buick Avenir Concept.
Is the Buick Avenir the future flagship for this premium brand?

Detroit is a happening city right now, thanks in large part to the 2015 edition of the North American International Auto Show. The NAIAS is the granddaddy of all auto shows — at least on this continent — what provides the lion’s share of new releases and concept vehicles for the year ahead.

The buzz leading up to this year’s show has been filled with early-breaking news as usual. Toyota, Buick and Jaguar were among the brands that unveiled new models beforehand, as did Mercedes-Benz, Chevrolet, Infiniti and Volkswagen. Yet, the early show and tells only served to feed the beast as social media, particularly Twitter, lit up with photos and comments on the eve of the first media day.

This writer is not in Detroit and for a very good reason too: a seasonal virus has knocked him down for the count, but not so far down that he isn’t relying on “boots on the ground” to help him out. Next week, he plans to head for Washington, DC, to attend the Washington Auto Show, an auspicious event in its own right.

For right now, the Motor City is the focal point for all things automotive as it should be. Indeed, Detroit is the nerve center for the US auto industry and every manufacturer, foreign and domestic, is paying it homage.

This article covers the first batch of announcements through mid-morning today with the remainder of the day’s releases coming later. We will follow up with more announcements on Tuesday. In the coming two weeks, we’ll dig deeper to reveal certain background details about select models, a postscript of sorts to help ensure that the buzz continues.

Buick Twosome Bedazzle

Auto Trends has been expecting Buick to expand its model line, but we were prepared for just one announcement, not two.

The first one confirmed what we have long suspected: the Opel Cascada will make a transformation and go on sale early next year as the 2016 Buick Cascada. This darling 2+2 coupe brings to Buick the first convertible since the Reatta, a halo model to magnify the brand.

The second announcement substantiated a theory we’ve considered, one that has Buick offering its own model variant based on GM’s Omega platform. That platform will underpin the forthcoming Cadillac CT6, what represents the pinnacle model for GM’s luxury brand. GM has said the platform would support other models, thus Buick will most likely deliver.

On the eve of the NAIAS, Ed Welburn, vice president of General Motors Global Design, presented the Buick Avenir, a premium sports sedan. A concept vehicle, the Avenir (French for the future) points to Buick’s style direction, one that fans will most likely embrace. Big on luxury and technology, the all-wheel drive Avenir has a long hood, wheels located to the corners, and a sloping rear deck.

Powered by a next-generation direct-injected V-6 engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, this nascent concept should become a reality by 2017. Expect GM to jettison the Avenir moniker and bestow the “Riviera” name on the production model. Sure, it is a sedan, but its 2+2 seating layout and sleek proportions likely won’t have too many people complaining.

Car and Truck of the Year Awards

Kicking off the show as usual were the North American Car and Truck of the Year announcements. As expected, the all-new and aluminum-based Ford F-150 was the winner here, beating out the Chevrolet Colorado and the Lincoln MKC. Although the Colorado is a strong entrant in the small pickup truck segment, the groundbreaking F-150 won as expected.

Quite a few people expected Ford to win double honors by snagging the Car of the Year award as well with the Mustang. However, the Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI snagged the most votes, beating out the Mustang and Hyundai Genesis sedan.

Last year, Chevrolet swept the awards with the Corvette Stingray and Silverado winning car and truck of the year recognition.

Nissan Titan Unveiled

Since 2004, the Nissan Titan has served mostly as a placeholder pickup truck for the brand. In the Titan, Nissan gained access to the market, but has woefully underserved its customers by limiting this truck to a singular body style, engine and duty class.

At the NAIAS, Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn unveiled the second generation model, a vehicle that makes great strides over the first generation pickup truck. The new truck will be available in standard, extended (King cab) and crew cab configurations, with three engine choices and both 4×2 and 4×4 layouts.

For the first time, the Titan will offer a gasoline V-6 engine and a Cummins-supplied 5.0-liter turbo-diesel V-8 engine. Nissan says that the 2016 Titan, going on sale later this year, will pull up to 12,000 pounds when properly equipped and carry a payload capacity of up to 2,000 pounds.

Nissan promises that the next generation Titan will come equipped with advanced technologies, including a rear view monitor, an around view monitor, moving object detection and a trailer light check system.

Ford GT Supercar

Ford serves up a sketch of the next generation Ford GT supercar.

If it is eye candy you want, the North American International Auto Show serves it up in spades. This morning, the Ford GT was unveiled, representing perhaps the most noteworthy vehicle from the new Ford Performance division we will see over the next few years.

Ford GT Supercar

The all-new Ford GT goes into production in 2016 and will join other blue oval performers, including the Focus RS, F-150 Raptor and a pair of Shelby GT350 models. It is just one of at least 12 new models that Ford Performance plans to reveal through 2020, over-the-top models that will crown the Ford brand.

The Ford GT supercar utilizes advanced lightweighting, especially evident in its carbon fiber construction. The rakishly aerodynamic sportscar will be powered by a twin turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine with an output of at least 600 horsepower.

The rear-wheel drive GT features a mid-mounted engine, a two-door coupe body shell, and aluminum front and rear subframes. Its lighter overall package is enhanced by its carbon fiber wrap.

Ford says that the GT will feature a state-of-the-art, port/direct dual fuel-injection arrangement to boost engine response, in addition to a low-friction roller-finger-follower valvetrain. Ford will pair the twin-turbocharged V6 with a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle for expeditious gear changes and unprecedented driver control.

Ford F-150 SVT Raptor

Another Ford product also received much attention at the NAIAS. Ford unveiled the F-150 SVT Raptor, its performance pickup truck. The new truck, slated to arrive in Fall 2016, will have a high-strength steel frame and light weight aluminum body, trimming some 500 pounds off of the current edition.

The 2017 SVT Raptor will receive a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, tuned to surpass the 411-horsepower that the current 6.2-liter V-8 engine delivers. Ford will pair this potent engine with its all-new 10-speed automatic transmission. The four-wheel drive system in this beast will offer a multi-setting terrain management system to include normal, street, weather, mud and sand modes. Moreover, it will offer Baja and rock modes. The Raptor’s new transfer case has been designed for both full-time off-roading and features a locking unit for crawling.

Enthusiasts will likely be enraptured by the next generation Ford F-150 SVT Raptor.

Next Generation Acura NSX

Another super car that has been receiving an appropriate amount of buzz is the 2016 Acura NSX. This model is a mid-engine sport hybrid, powered by a twin turbocharged V-6 engine paired with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission. The new model will feature three electric motors — two up front and one to the rear.

The Acura NSX is enhanced by a Sport Hybrid Super-Handling All Wheel Drive (Sport Hybrid SH-AWD) system, what provides articulate response time for steering, braking and throttle. Moreover, it will enhance vehicle stability, control and launch performance of all-wheel drive. The NSX’s Agile Handling Assist (AHA) makes use of brake torque to further enhance yaw response and dynamic stability control.

Notably, the NSX will be built solely at the Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio, with approximately 100 highly-skilled workers tasked with conducting full body construction, paint, and final assembly.

Next Generation Toyota Tacoma

Another significant unveiling in Detroit today was for the 2016 Toyota Tacoma. That pickup truck is new from the ground up as well as inside and out. It will come to the market just as GM fights for position with a pair of new models of its own. The Nissan Frontier is another segment competitor.

In the 2016 Toyota Tacoma, enthusiasts will see a new powertrain and enhanced suspension tuning. Its Michigan engineers made numerous changes to include the addition of high strength steel to the frame and ultra-high strength steel to the body shell, providing a more rigid body as well as an important weight-saving measure.

The base motor is a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine; an all-new, 3.5-liter V-6 engine that runs on the efficient Atkinson cycle will also be available. The new engine will feature both direct and port fuel injection. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Moreover, a six-speed manual transmission will be available with the larger engine.

The Tacoma’s exterior look provides for a pleasing, evolutionary update, one that features a striking upper grille along with a taller, more brawny hood. Front projector beam headlamps can be paired with available daytime running lights.

The new model also features a locking tailgate and an integrated spoiler to improve vehicle aerodynamics. The tailgate also comes with an easy lowering feature for a slow retraction. For the very first time, the Tacoma will also offer a tri-fold hard tonneau cover.

Upgraded Interior, Improved Extras

Inside, the cabin features several upgrades to help convey a more premium atmosphere. This model receives soft-wrap trim and metallic accents. Premium upgrades bring in a smart key with push button start, leather-trimmed seats, Qi wireless charging, a power moonroof, dual-zone climate control, an embellished touchscreen audio, a blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert and other enhancements.

Five vehicle grades will be offered: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited. Both TRD grades were developed by Toyota Racing Development, the same performance arm that is behind Toyota’s motorsport endeavors.

The TRD Off-Road edition features a multi-terrain system, what permits the driver to select different modes to handle a variety of terrain to include sand, mud or loose rock. Wheel spin is accordingly regulated, adjusting throttle and brake pressure to enhance terrain traction.

10 Must See Models at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show

December 25, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Just as the Rose Bowl is the Granddaddy of all the bowl games, the North American International Auto Show has similar prestige amongst the major automotive shows across the continent. The Detroit auto show isn’t the oldest, but its proximity to the heart of America’s automotive industry makes it the most important of all shows. For 2015, the NAIAS will feature numerous new models, including the following 10 you must see.

2016 Acura NSX.
Tease us please: 2016 Acura NSX.

1. Acura NSX. Whether you call it a sportscar or a super car probably doesn’t matter. The 2016 Acura NSX will be the most advanced and expensive car ever released by American Honda. This two-seater will feature a hybrid drivetrain, with a twin turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine and electric motors powering the car. Importantly, global production for this long-awaited second generation model will take place in Marysville, Ohio, demonstrating Honda’s continued confidence in its American workforce.

2. Toyota Tacoma. It has been a decade since Toyota introduced the current generation of its popular Tacoma pickup truck. Refreshes made since then have kept this truck the segment leader amongst midsize models, but with two new models from GM now in the mix, it is time for a new truck. Toyota has been mum on what we’ll see with the 2016 Tacoma, offering a teaser photo to show us that “Tacoma” will be stamped on its tailgate much in the same way as seen on the larger Tundra.

2016 Toyota Tacoma.
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma will make its global debut in Detroit.

3. Cadillac CTS-V. Cadillac sales are down for the year in a segment where sales are outpacing the industry. GM’s luxury brand has been remaking itself, by bringing new models to the market. V-Series is Cadillac’s performance line and the CTS is its midsize sedan. Put the two together and you have the makings of the most powerful production model ever built by GM, making 640 horsepower and 630 foot-pounds of torque thanks to its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine. This sport sedan’s top speed is 201 mph for a model that should see much track time.

4. Nissan Titan. Nissan introduced its first full-size pickup truck for the 2004 model year. Unfortunately, the Nissan Titan has not been updated since. Full-size pickup trucks fans, however, will find a 2016 model on display at the 2015 Detroit auto show. Not much is known about the upcoming model, except that a first-ever diesel option will be offered. That motor will come from Cummins, the long-time supplier of a turbo diesel for Ram trucks.

2016 Nissan Titan.
A small hint of the 2016 Nissan Titan.

5. Chevrolet Volt. Pity GM, Nissan and other manufacturers that are investing so much money in bringing electrified vehicles to the market. The second-generation Chevrolet Volt will be on display in Detroit, a sedan that will receive an all-new propulsion system along with an enhanced battery system. It will be interesting to see what changes GM makes to its hybrid electric vehicle. It will also be interesting to see how sales hold up as gas prices drop to as low as $2 per gallon.

6. Audi Q7. Audi introduced its largest crossover utility vehicle for the 2007 model year. Engine updates and other changes have kept this model relevant, but it is time for an all-new Q7 to emerge. The 2016 Audi Q7 will come in lighter and 26 percent more efficient according to the automaker. Two turbocharged engines — one diesel, the other gasoline — both displacing at 3.0 liters will be available. Audi promises several technological updates, including 3D audio.

2016 Audi Q7
Audi’s large crossover is set for its Detroit debut.

7. Mercedes-Benz AMG line. Sorry, Mercedes-Benz fans: your all-new AMG models have already been revealed. What’s the problem with that? Nothing, really. Mercedes will showcase its AMG C-Class and GLE Coupe in Detroit, the first two models in the all-new Mercedes-AMG Sport Line. Essentially, with the new models the German automaker inserts an AMG Sport line, providing a step between the AMG Sports package for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and its classic AMG models.

8. Ford Performance. Earlier this month, Ford announced the creation of its Ford Performance division. That division unites Ford Racing, Team RS and Ford SVT under one umbrella. From that division will come at least a dozen new models through 2020, with several models expected to debut at the Detroit auto show. Ford hasn’t named those models yet, but we’re expecting both the Focus RS and the F-150 Raptor to debut. Rumors of a resurrected GT super car have not been confirmed.

Lexus F Teaser
Lexus F.
9. Lexus F Model. Toyota’s luxury brand, Lexus, has successfully battled Mercedes-Benz and BMW for high net-worth customers. Where they’ve lagged is in performance vehicles, but that’s likely to change. Mercedes-Benz has AMG and BMW has its M line. The high performance F brand is from Lexus and we’ve already seen the delicious RC F. A second model will debut in Detroit, a track-ready sports car Lexus has recently been teasing. Not much is known about the new model, so look for a big reveal at the NAIAS to tell all.

10. Mini Cooper JCW. A Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop will debut in Detroit, powered by a twin turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. According to parent BMW, the new model has already dropped cover, but some details remain, including its price. The latest JCW should make 238 horsepower, providing even more distance between this model and its competitors. The new model will be outfitted with a JCW aerodynamics kit, a Brembo sports brake system and light alloy wheels.

Detroit: North American International Auto Show

The public days for the NAIAS will run from Jan. 17 to 25, 2015. The Detroit auto show is located at the newly refurbished Cobo Center downtown, with shops, restaurants and hotels nearby.

Lucky for you there are racing labs available where licensed drivers can work with a professional driver and learn how that Ferrari 360 Modena, McLaren 650S Coupe or Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S handles before getting behind the wheel themselves. Typically, such “experiences” are held at race tracks or on fair grounds and involve three laps of drive time, with video tape of their track time extra.

If you are familiar with the way that these experiences work, you have seen prices starting at $500 on up, which may be well beyond your budget. You should know that deep discounts are often available with your total cost ranging from $99 to $159. Where should you look for a deal? Why that would be through Groupon and similar sites, of course.

Complete Automotive Detailing

He washes and waxes his car religiously, but for once you would like to see him turn the work over to a professional, especially during those months when work, family time or the holidays press in. You know that he wouldn’t be happy to allow just anyone to do the work, so search in your area for someone who can give his car the attention he expects.

A basic service is anything but that. It should include a hand car wash to remove all contaminants and dirt. Then, the professional should dry the car with special microfiber materials, apply a waterless wash and use compressed air. Detailing should extend to the tires and wheels, with a special hybrid polish sealant used. Inside, the car would get the royal treatment, with precise attention given to all surfaces, taking into consideration the various materials found there to include: leather, wood, chrome and plastic. A thorough dusting and vacuuming, interior and exterior cleaning of the windows, and vapor steam sterilization of the cabin is in order. Finally, a UV treatment and protection of all interior materials should be applied.

For a basic service you’re looking at spending upwards of $150 to get the work done. Opt for paint touch up, engine cleaning and interior restoration and you’ll pay handsomely for the extra special work.

Classic Car Wines

Never would we suggest that drinking and driving are a good thing. That doesn’t mean that your sweetheart cannot imbibe alcohol while at home and when in the company of your friends. Wine goes with mostly anything and the Classic Car Wines sold by the B.R. Cohn Winery in California’s Sonoma Valley may stoke his interest and whet his palate.

You can order an assortment of wines to include: Muscle Car Red, Woody White, Panel Wagon Pinot, Roadster Red and Boaters Barbera. As delicious as these wines are, the one dilemma your true love might have is whether to open these beautiful artistically labeled bottles or to keep them on display. Order double and you can do both. Discounts are available for bulk purchase; shipping restrictions may apply in your state.

Make a Museum Visit

Your family trips are often limited to what everyone wants with your husband patiently going along with every trip to the beach, to the adventure park or camping. You know what he really wants and that is to take in a side trip to visit an automotive collection, something you can arrange with careful planning.

There are several automotive museums of note that every car lover should see at least once in his or her lifetime. In Bowling Green, Kentucky, there is the National Corvette Museum, located next to the manufacturing plant that builds these iconic sports cars. Add in a factory tour while you are there.

If your vacation plans find you traveling to Los Angeles, then the Petersen Automotive Museum with its 200-car collection on Wilshire Boulevard is a must see. The display changes regularly, but you will always see at least a handful of cars that were once owned by Hollywood’s stars. Take the escalator up from the first and second floor and you’ll be enthralled by the photos of vintage vehicles plastered on its walls.

Visiting the Motor City in January is not tops on everyone’s list. Perhaps it should be as the North American International Auto Show is held in Detroit beginning in the middle of the month. The Cobo Center show attracts more than 7,000 media people from around the world, where manufacturers display stunning concepts and new product releases. While in Detroit, head over to nearby Deerfield Village to take in the Henry Ford Museum. Hundreds of cars are on display dating back to the earliest Model T. You’ll also find other mechanical conveyances, including trains and planes.

Museum ticket prices are reasonable, starting at $10 or so. Getting there, local accommodations and food are other expenses. Plan it with your vacation and you will save money.

Customized Gift Certificate

Visa Gift CardNot every gift presented will be received with whole-hearted enthusiasm. You may live in dread that your present will miss the mark or be politely rejected. Let’s face it: for some automotive enthusiasts there is no way that you can please them!

One way to resolve this problem is to pay a visit to his favorite automotive retailer and pick up a gift certificate. If that retailer is part of a national chain, then you shouldn’t have a problem obtaining one. If it is a local shop where your loved one does business, ask the proprietor to make a certificate for one of his favorite customers. Another option is to simply load up a Visa debit card, present it to him and allow him to make his own purchase decision.

Christmas Dreaming

With some careful and dedicated last minute planning, you can pull off your automotive-themed gift giving without a hitch. Throw in a few stocking stuffers such as an ice scraper, carnauba wax and a pack of microfiber cleaning cloths and you will rock his world this Christmas morning.

Toyota to Unveil All-New Tacoma Pickup in Detroit This Jan.

December 5, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Updated: December 5, 2014

Before GM jumped back in to the market with its Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, Toyota controlled 68 percent of the small truck market to Nissan’s 32 percent. As the only two players left in the segment, the two Japanese manufacturers were left to duke it out. Toyota’s dominance has been without dispute these past few years, but that is beginning to change with the return of the GM trucks this fall.

Indeed, in November Chevrolet sold 2,366 Colorados and GMC added 854 Canyons for 3,220 units sold. Those numbers are ahead of what GM had expected at this point in the game. Certainly, with 13,018 Tacomas sold and 6,332 copies of the Nissan Frontier delivered in November, GM has much more room to grow.

2016 Toyota Tacoma

Toyota isn’t about to sit on its laurels although some may insist that it has been. It has been a full decade since a new Tacoma hit the market, a long interval between updates. On Thursday, Robert S. Carter, Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. senior vice president of automotive operations, said that an all-new Tacoma pickup truck will be revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this Jan. Carter did not offer details about the model according to the Detroit News.

The Tacoma is important to Toyota as the manufacturer claims a vast and loyal following. With the Ford Ranger and Dodge Dakota no longer a factor, Toyota has an even broader customer base from which to gain new owners. Notably, Tacoma easily outsells Toyota’s own full-size pickup truck, the Tundra. Through Nov., 140,757 Tacomas have been delivered to just 107,974 for the Toyota Tundra.

This Chevrolet Colorado is the newest pickup truck on the market.

Great Expectations

What can we expect with the new Toyota Tacoma? Given that Toyota is routinely mum about most product releases anything said here is merely conjecture. Because we’re all about the latest auto trends, you expect us to at least serve up something of substance. We’ll try our best here.

1. New transmissions. Toyota used to be ahead of the engineering curve on a lot of things, but when it comes to transmissions, they’ve trailed. The Tacoma comes equipped with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission. Both will go away in favor of six-speed manual and automatic transmission, bringing Toyota into the 21st century with its transmissions.

2. Engine changes, maybe not. Toyota has had much success with its current engines: a 4.0-liter V-6 and a 2.7-liter inline four. Likely, we’ll see the same engines return, fan favorites at that. The transmissions have been the biggest drag, not on sales, rather on efficiency. If the same engines return we could see a generational update such as a new combustion system, perhaps even cylinder deactivation for the V-6 when operating on the highway. Expect improvements in torque, a reduction in emissions and a net gain in fuel economy with the new trucks.

3. Regular cab will not return. The Toyota Tacoma and its competitors have not only grown from small to midsize models, but customers are looking for larger interiors with these models too. Just as the Colorado no longer offers a regular cab, Toyota has already done likewise by dropping the regular cab. Expect the 2016 model to continue to offer extended and crew cabs only, what customers favor when shopping for a smaller pickup truck these days. Don’t expect the XRunner to return, however.

4. Sundry things. Expect that the next generation Tacoma will incorporate mostly evolutionary, rather than evolutionary changes — aside from the transmissions. Among the assorted changes we’ll likely see is greater use of high strength steels to lighten the load. As Ford moves toward aluminum, Toyota will stick with steel, but lighter variations at that. Underneath, a new exhaust system seems likely; modifications to the suspension system are also possible. Inside, expect a thoroughly modern center stack. New seats, a fresh instrument panel and better storage seem likely.

Toyota Tacoma Dreaming

It seems that everyone has an opinion on what they would like to see with the next generation Tacoma. Spy shots and analyst projections has this truck occupying the same footprint as before. Thus, the biggest changes may be mostly evolutionary, not revolutionary.

As far as a hoped for diesel engine goes, don’t expect one anytime soon. Sure, GM will offer one beginning in 2015 with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, but Toyota will likely take a pass, at least for now. Diesel demand is likely to remain low and with gas prices dropping to the lowest levels we have seen in five years, holding off on one for at least the next two years seems like the approach Toyota is destined to take.

Auto Trends will share more information about the “Taco” as it becomes known. As for its delivery time expect it to arrive in Fall 2015 as a 2016 model.

Lincoln MKC Concept: When Reality Happens

January 14, 2013 by admin 4 Comments

Car manufacturers routinely introduce concept vehicles at popular auto shows to gauge customer and media feedback. Though most concepts are never built, in recent years weve seen a greater tendency for automakers to present a new idea and quickly find a way to bring that vehicle or something like it to the market.

Lincoln MKC Concept
Detroit debut: Lincoln MKC Concept

Detroit Debut

At the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Ford Motor Company is presenting its first-ever C-segment Lincoln concept, dubbed the MKC. This five-passenger model, riding on a compact vehicle platform, represents the smallest Lincoln ever. Likely, this concept will become a reality with Auto Trends forecasting production beginning by 2014 and the new Lincoln product hitting showrooms as a 2015 model year crossover sport utility vehicle.

The concept vehicle comes as Ford seeks to update its luxury brand. Lincoln, the segment leader as recently as 1998, has seen a steady decline in sales as luxury car shoppers flee to the competition. Indeed, even its archival Cadillac is handily beating the Lincoln brand, outselling its American competitor by a 2-to-1 margin.

Lincoln Motor Company

Ford, however, believes that Lincoln’s revival is just a new model or two away from catching on. In December 2012, Ford took out ads in major media with the theme, Introducing the Lincoln Motor Company. Those ads appeared on the eve of the introduction of its two newest models the Lincoln MKZ and Lincoln MKZ hybrid, midsize sedans. The MKZ is Lincoln’s best-selling vehicle line.

The Lincoln MKC Concept features the new face of Lincoln. Gone is the polarizing grin that dominated several models over the past few years with a new grille and sculpted hood defining the current design language. The MKC Concept features muscular shoulders, a creased beltline and sleek body lines flowing to what Lincoln describes as a clamshell liftgate. Most notable is its panoramic glass roof, a new feature that was introduced with the 2013 Lincoln MKZ.

Cabin Highlights

Inside, the cabin is bright, airy and luxuriously appointed, with embroidered premium leather, elegant wood and chrome accents and an analog dashboard with digital read outs. The center stack features SYNC with MyLincolnTouch surrounded by buttons to control audio, climate and other in-cabin features.

The Lincoln MKC is a front-wheel drive model; all-wheel drive would be optional. This crossover sits on a 106.9-inch wheelbase and is 179.3 inches long by 76.1 inches wide by 63.2 inches tall. The concept is outfitted with 20-inch premium painted wheels with polished aluminum rims set within all-season radial tires.

Engine Possibilities

As a concept, no powertrain arrangement has been nailed down. Given Fords success with all things EcoBoost, a 2.0-liter in-line four cylinder engine seems likely. Thats the same engine offered in the Lincoln MKZ, a 240-horsepower motor paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. A diesel for overseas markets seems possible, while a hybrid edition should not be ruled out.

Bringing the MKC Concept to the market would have Lincoln pitting this crossover against some highly formidable competition including the BMW X1. Other small crossovers include the Acura MDX, Audi Q5 and the Infiniti EX. Cadillac is exploring the market and within a few years this booming segment is expected to be populated by models across the brand spectrum. Thus, the Lincoln MKC Concept may be green-lighted for production as early as this month.

Detroit Reveal: 2013 Dodge Dart GT

January 8, 2013 by admin 4 Comments

2013 Dodge Dart GT
New: 2013 Dodge Dart GT

A new model is being added to the 2013 Dodge Dart line, the GT. Set for introduction at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this month, the Dart GT will slot in at the top of this compact sedans trim line followed by Limited, Aero, Rallye, SXT and SE editions. The Dodge Dart GT is priced from $20,995.

50th Anniversary Edition

The new model gets a Tigershark MultiAir2 2.4-liter in-line four cylinder engine. This engine makes 184 horsepower and 174 foot-pounds of torque, providing what Chrysler says is the right balance of power and fuel efficiency. Standard is a six-speed manual transmission, while a six-speed automatic transmission with autostick is available. The new Dodge Dart GT hits the market 50 years after the original Dart GT was introduced. This model erases the Dodge Dart R/T introduced earlier in the model year.

The Dart GT offers attributes not found in other trim levels or at least not offered as standard equipment. This vehicle sits on 18-inch aluminum wheels and provides a sport suspension with frequency sensing damping shocks. Body touches include black accents across the grille, around the headlamp bezels and on the door handles, racetrack LED tail lamps and a dual integrated exhaust system with bright exhaust tips. Fog lamps and power heated side mirrors are standard.

Extensive Cabin Amenities

Inside, the Dodge Dart GT is outfitted with Nappa perforated black leather trim and red stitching, heated front seats, a special steering wheel, dual zone climate control, remote start with the automatic transmission and a universal garage door opener. The Dart GT also features a reconfigurable instrument panel, a UConnect touchscreen telematics system, a rear backup camera, 10-way power driverss seats, a leather trimmed steering wheel with speed and audio controls, and power windows and power door locks.

Dodge is offering no less than 12 exterior colors for the Dart GT. Those colors include Winter Chill, Redline Red, Blue Streak and Maximum Steel, no extra cost color options for this five-passenger front-wheel drive sedan. Also available is a technology group, hyper-black aluminum wheels, a power sunroof, Garmin navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, high intensity discharge headlamps and an engine block heater. Buyers can also opt to upgrade to a 10-speaker, 506-watt Alpine Premium Sound System.

2013 Dodge Dart

Although the Dodge Dart GT does not offer a performance upgrade, it does signal that further expansion of the Dodge Dart model line is possible. Rumored to follow is an SRT edition, a model hearkening to the popular Dodge Neon SRT-4, a performance edition that raced from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds. Clearly, there is room for such a model one of several performance auto trends that we’ve been seeing for the Dodge brand.
