On the Road With a 2020 Mazda CX-5

Mazda offers the 2020 CX-5 in five trims. You’ll find normally aspirated and turbocharged versions of its four-cylinder engine with standard front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. Power travels to the wheels utilzing a 6-speed automatic transmission.

If you’re looking for an affordable family car with room five, ample utility space, and available towing capacity, then the compact crossover SUV segment is a great place to start. Small and affordable, most models start in the low 20s and top out in the mid-30s when loaded to the hilt. The sweet spot is in the upper 20s range, where value, amenities, and comfort intersect.

The Mazda CX-5 is one such model in a crowded segment. It stands out for its design as well as its features and value. It is one of four Mazda SUVs, beginning with the CX-3 and CX-30, then followed by the midsize, three-row Mazda CX-9. Its price point is higher than most competitors as we’ll soon see.


2020 Mazda CX-5 Review


Mazda offers the 2020 CX-5 in Sport ($25,190), Touring ($26,830), Grand Touring ($30,310), Grand Touring Reserve ($35,135), and Signature ($37,155) trims. The first three trims come with standard front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive, a $1,400 upgrade. The two top trims are all-wheel-drive only. Add $1,100 for the destination fee in the contiguous states ($1,045 in Hawaii; $1,145 in Alaska).

Exterior

We’re biased when it comes to Mazda, as we find its vehicles typically are the most handsome of the lot. Mazda may be a mainstream brand, but it takes aim at the premium segment with its higher trim models.

Mazda makes a big deal about its KODO (soul of motion) design language and for good reason. Beyond its gaping grille and LED accent lighting, beautiful character lines and carefully crafted body sculpting impart elegance. Choice wheel options, a rising beltline with a rapidly rising end (which reminds us of the Volvo XC-40) and a sculpted rear deck round out the look.

LED lights, alloy wheels, and rain-sensing wipers are standard. Move up through the trims and Mazda adds such features as automatic-leveling headlights, adaptive front lighting, additional LED lighting including fog lights, larger wheels, and heated and power-folding side mirrors.



Interior

The beautiful lines of the exterior have their match inside the vehicle. The lines are clean and the surfaces detailed. We appreciate the dashboard layout as it offers superior frontal vision. In the middle of it all is the infotainment screen, which sits on top of the dashboard. Some prefer an integrated look, but Mazda chose a different path.

Most of the interior has soft-touch materials, brightwork trim, and limited use of plastic. Cloth seats give way to leather as you move up through the trim ranks. Standard air conditioning gives way to dual-zone climate control. You’ll also find heated and ventilated front seats on some trims along with heated rear outboard seats, a heated steering wheel, and LED lighting.

As with nearly every model in this segment, the CX-5 is ideal for four, but fits five in a pinch. The front seats are comfortable and supply good support. Likewise, the rear split-fold bench seat offers similar comfort. Access and egress requires only a slight tilt of the head, especially when entering the cabin.




Tech

All CX-5 trims come with standard keyless entry and push-button start. Mazda includes a 7-inch touch-screen display, HD Radio, USB input, and a four-speaker audio system. Beginning with the Touring trim, the CX-5 gains a six-speaker audio system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility. The middle Grand Touring trim brings in satellite radio and a 10-speaker Bose audio system.

The Touring Reserve has an 8-inch touch-screen display. A navigation system is standard with the top-trim Signature edition.

Safety

For 2020, Mazda made some changes to safety equipment and its all good. Before this year, Mazda charged extra for active safety tech; this year, so much is included and reflected in the price.

Here, you’ll find such features as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, blind-spot monitoring, and special equipment designed to prevent impacts with pedestrians and other cars.

On higher-trim models, you’ll find a few extra-spend items, including a surround-view monitor, parking sensors, and a head-up display.



Performance

Mazda offers two powertrain combinations with the 2020 CX-5. The first three trims are motivated by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed to the wheels utilizing a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The engine is very familiar to Auto Trends and is found in many Mazda applications, including the CX-30 and Mazda6. In some forms, such as in the two top trims of the CX-5 (including our test Signature edition) and in the CX-9, it is turbocharged. In this case, the engine makes 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque (or 250 hp and 320 lb.-ft. with premium fuel).

Even in non-aspirated form, it is an appropriate engine for the CX-5, as it delivers ample step-off power and sufficient passing power. It doesn’t have the oomph of turbocharged competitors from Ford and Volkswagen, but it keeps up with the pack where it matters. Expect to earn about 25 mpg in combined city/highway driving with an all-wheel-drive version.

Our CX-5 Signature edition changes the driving dynamic considerably, thanks to turbocharging. The added power up front and on the open road is welcome. Just expect some turbo-lag to rear its head under hard acceleration – Mazda uses a single turbo, thus the slight delay when flooring it.

Steering is light to the touch and this SUV handles reasonably well on twisty roads and when pulling out of corners. Flick the switch to sport mode and it holds each gear longer. By no means is the CX-5 a corner carver, but it certainly isn’t a laggard, especially in turbo guise.



Competitive Set

Every manufacturer has at least one entry in the compact crossover utility segment. Indeed, there are more than one dozen models to choose from. Most have standard front-wheel drive; all offer all-wheel drive.

Other models to consider include the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and the Nissan Rogue. Also, the Ford Escape, Dodge Journey, Chevrolet Equinox, and GMC Terrain must be given consideration. Other models in this segment include the Mitsubishi Outlander, Volkswagen Tiguan, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and the Subaru Forester.


Our Recommendation


Start your search with the middle Grand Touring trim and you’ll find leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, power-controlled front seats, and a power liftgate. An available Premium Package ($1,625) adds automatic power-folding side mirrors, windshield wiper de-icer, a heated steering wheel, heated outboard rear seats, ventilated front seats, and an active driving display (head-up display). With the package, your cost is $33,325, and that’s high. However, with the current coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis raging, dealers should have more wiggle room to negotiate.

BMW X6 M Competition

BMW’s formidable line of SUVs is comprised of seven models sequentially named from X1 to X7. This German marque leaves no holes in its lineup, ensuring that there is a luxury utility vehicle for every shopper.

But BMW doesn’t stop there. Indeed, recognizing that many of its customers transitioned from coupes and sedans to SUVs and have also long placed a premium on speed, four models ranging from the X3 to X6 have “M” performance variants.

The largest of the four is known as the BMW X6 M and was a recent visitor to the Auto Trends test fleet. Specifically, an M6 Competition model with jaw-dropping output offered a week’s worth of on-road thrills.


2020 BMW X6 Review


The 2020 model year launches the X6’s fourth-generation (the third for the M line). This model continues to share the underpinnings of the X5 and offers a coupe-like design with a formidable expression. BMW offers this model in X6 sDrive40i ($64,300), X6 xDrive40i ($66,600), and X6 M50i ($85,650) configurations. Further, you’ll find a pair of “M” models known simply as the X6 M ($108,600) and the X6 M Competition ($117,600).

For the focus of this review, we’ll concentrate on the X6 M/Competition and its unique styling and performance characteristics. Likewise, any mention of the standard models is for comparison purposes only.



Exterior

There is nothing subtle about the BMW X6 M. From its gangly shape to outrageous lines, this X6 is a beastly model.
The M lines simply magnify the look with its oversized twin-kidney grille leading the way. A broad lower intake and huge side cutouts along with LED signature lights add to the drama. Overall, it’s intimidating and overpowering – if you see one fast approaching in your rearview mirror, more than likely you’ll scoot over to allow it to pass.

Sculpted wheel arches, a high profile, and a sloping roof leading to a notched liftgate are among the other design features of note. From the rear, narrow wraparound lights and a diffuser highlight the look, but with far less drama and intimidation than the front.

Interior

You can fit five inside the X6 M, but it’s most comfortable for four. Access and egress to the rear seat is a bit challenging as you’ll have to bend your head to avoid making contact with the roof. Once inside, the rear seat is spacious, comfortable, and roomy.

The best seats, of course, are up front. Dual thrones with heating, cooling, and massaging features not only offer maximum support, but they’re thickly bolstered for spirited driving. Just make sure when you enter you clear the seat edges to avoid landing on one of the hard sides.

BMW interiors are among the best in the industry and the X6 lives up to that expectation. The interiors, particularly on the top trims, feature high-end leathers, aluminum edges, quilted inserts, and Alcantara headliners. Not a plastic surface anywhere. Ambient and nighttime lighting add to the mystique.




Tech

The tech goodies are apparent in the X6 M. BMW supplies this model with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with HD Radio, satellite radio, a CD player, connected services, and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility. Sorry, no Android Auto.

Other features include wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and the usual USB inputs.

Safety

BMW supplies the X6 M with multiple driver-assist features, including active driving assistant. This suite includes frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation and lane departure warning.

Automatic high beams, active blind-spot detection, surround-view cameras, and active park distance control are also included.



Performance

By now, you’ve likely figured out that the X6 M is mostly about performance. Under the hood is BMW’s most powerful V8 engine, a twin-turbo beauty displacing 4.4-liters. This engine is found in a variety of applications and typically punctuates all things M.

In its normal mode, it makes 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. That alone is laudable, enabling this strapping SUV to move from 0-60 mph in about 4 seconds. If you want to move just under that threshold, then choose either M model with special engine tuning. Here, you’ll find a whopping 600 or 617 horsepower at the ready. BMW routes power to all four wheels utilizing an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Doubtlessly, the X6 M is loud. And fast. Engage the ignition and the engine rumbles to life and sends out a boom throw the exhaust system. That system is adjustable, allowing for a louder cacophony as desired. Your neighbors, though, may appreciate a more silent approach, something you can supply by deactivating the soundtrack until you’re on the open road.



The X6 is heavy, with the fully loaded Competition weighing just over two-and-one-half tons. That’s a lot of weight to move, but the bigly V8 does so with ease. Step-off acceleration is amazing – the twin turbos conspire to develop power flawlessly and consistently. If you want to make the run up to 100 mph, this engine never flags in zeal.
Weighed steering, direct handling, and a wonderful connection to the road are among this SUV’s hallmarks. It doesn’t have quite the on-road chops of an M4, but it is close.

Despite its high profile, the X6 M stays the course, handling twisty roads with ease and pulling out of corners on point, thanks largely to its rear bias. Certainly, this SUV is a gamer and individuals with deep pockets are eager to buy in.

For everyone else, the standard twin-turbo V6 with 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque should do. We’ve driven other BMW models with this engine and have found it more than up to the task.

Competitive Set

There are few direct competitors to the BMW X6 M. One of the most obvious is the Mercedes-AMG GLE 43/63. The Lamborghini Urus is another one. If you’re looking at the standard X6, the Lexus GX, Audi Q7, and Infiniti QX60 are worth considering.



Our Recommendation


Should you choose the X6 M or the X6 Competition? The difference between the two is $9,000, a price that includes some trim and interior upgrades, badging, and added performance.

There are two packages to consider — a Drivers Assistance Professional Package ($1,700 and includes adaptive cruise control which surprisingly isn’t included elsewhere) and an Executive Package ($3,600) with heated seats, heated and cooled front cup holders, ventilated front seats, soft-close front doors, rear manual side window shades, and adaptive headlights with laser light.

Other features offered separately include Night Vision With Pedestrian Detection ($2,300), a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Audio System ($3,400), Rear-Seat Entertainment Professional ($2,200), and an M Performance Package ($2,500). Fully built out and this model will set you back by more than $134,000.

When all is said and done, you’ll likely pay at least $120,000 for one of most powerful SUVs available.

The Lexus RX Cleans Up

The Lexus RX comes in three trims and offers available all-wheel drive.

The Lexus RX is a midsize, luxury SUV and the only model in its segment with an available full-hybrid drivetrain. For just over two decades, the RX has set the pace in the luxury sphere, delivering cutting-edge styling, efficiency, opulence, and value. For 2020, the Lexus RX 350 features a refresh with its updated exterior styling, expanded technologies, and new safety features.


2020 Lexus RX Review


Lexus markets the 2020 RX 350 in three trims: RX ($44,150), RX F Sport ($47,950), and RXL ($47,300). The first two trims offer seating for five; the RXL seats seven. Add $1,400 for all-wheel drive and $1,025 for the destination fee. You’ll also find a hybrid variant offered in 450h ($46,800), 450h F Sport ($50,600), and 450hL ($50,510) trims. For this review, we’ll feature the gas model primarily with a few mentions of the hybrid as appropriate.


 


Exterior

What’s the big change with the RX’s exterior? A few notable things, including a redesigned front fascia, deeper character lines, and more distinctive headlamps and taillamps. If you liked the design before, you’ll love the new look. Conversely, if you thought the previous style was over the top, this one may send you over the edge!

The standard features list includes 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, power-adjusted and heated side mirrors, and a power rear door. Choose the F Sport model and you’ll find such embellishments as a mesh grille, rear valance, and 20-inch wheels. Various packages bring in automatic-leveling headlamps, other wheel choices, a power moonroof and aluminum roof rails, and a panoramic glass roof. You can also choose a kick opening liftgate.


Pronounced body sculpting and strong character lines dominate the profile.

Interior

We like, no scratch that, we love Lexus’ interiors. The look and feel is exquisite with lots of high-end materials in place, including synthetic or real leather, wood, and metal trim. The dashboard features multiple layers with metal trim splitting various sections. Our test model included the available bamboo steering wheel with leather-wrapped grip points and a heating element ($450). The color schemes are soothing and visually pleasant. The front seats are plush and quite comfortable. Surprisingly, heated front seats ($440) are an upgrade; heated and ventilated front seats are available too ($640).

The second-row 40/20/40 split-folding and reclining bench seat holds two with ease and three for most people when needed. The RXL model adds a third row, but we don’t see its purpose other than for short trips to the store for youngsters. The area is cramped with limited legroom. It also takes away valuable storage space. If you absolutely need room for seven, the Lexus GX is a much better choice.

Among the standard features are full power accessories, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, power front seats, and zoned climate control. The list of options, exclusive of what was already mentioned, includes manual rear side door sunshades, power cushion extenders for the driver and front passenger seats, and heated outboard second-row seats. Choose the F Sport model and this trim adds a black headliner, aluminum pedals and doorsill scuff plates, performance-style instrumentation, and special badging.




Technology

In our book, the Lexus RX scores high in most departments. Technology, however, has not been its strong suit. Fortunately, things have improved this year.

The RX is the first Lexus model to offer both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, which will soon spread across the product line. Other changes include six USB ports and a new interface with embedded apps, including Waze and Google. Apple Maps, Apple Music, and related apps are accessible with Apple devices. Further, the standard 8-inch touchscreen display is replaced by a split 12.3-inch display in some models. Bluetooth connectivity is standard.

We’re still not smitten with the scratchpad controller, however. Here, you need to learn how to manipulate the pad to access certain features, including the radio. It takes time to learn and can be quite distracting until you get there. We’re of a mind that infotainment systems should be simple and straightforward with recognizable app-like icons, touch-screen use, and voice control.

The standard audio package is a 9-speaker system or you can opt for a 12-speaker system, which is bundled with navigation ($2,285). An 835-watt, 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system is available and also comes bundled with navigation ($3,365). Another option to consider is a head-up display ($600).



Safety

Perhaps the strongest suit for this Lexus is with its safety features. This model already scores high with the IIHS and NHTSA, but it also scores with consumers.

The standard Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 features this marque’s latest driver-assist technologies. Here, Lexus bundles automatic high beams, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, stop sign assist, and adaptive cruise control. Bundled separately is blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic braking, and parking assist.

Performance

The Lexus RX 350 sits on a front-wheel-drive platform with available all-wheel drive. Thus, it doesn’t have the handling acumen of competing rear-wheel-drive models, including the Mercedes-Benz GLE and the BMW X5. On the other hand, it finds its place among such models as the Cadillac XT5.

Powering every RX is a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. Lexus pairs this engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Choose the hybrid and the same engine is present, along with an electric motor, and a battery pack. The hybrid throws down 308 horsepower at full throttle.

We found the RX offers generous step-off acceleration and ample passing power. The transmission keeps up and it doesn’t slip nor does it fumble around as it searches for the right gear.

The RX delivers a comfortable ride with most road abrasions absorbed as it powers down the road. The steering is direct and the RX acquits itself as you navigate twisty roads. Pulling out of corners is another thing as this SUV tilts and rocks, much like any other high-profile vehicle. The F Sport’s adaptive suspension system would be nice here.

Fuel efficiency is so-so for the gas model, coming in around 23 mpg combined. Choose the hybrid and it’s much more efficient, averaging about 30 mpg. What’s especially noteworthy is that the hybrid also has the power edge. If you need to tow, the RX is rated to pull up to 3,500 pounds.



Competitive Set

Besides the models already mentioned, the Lexus RX competes with the Acura MDX, Infiniti QX60, Audi Q7, Jaguar F-Pace, and the Volvo XC90. The price range for most competing models starts in the low-to-mid 40s and pushes near or above $60,000.


Our Recommendation


Stick with the base model, then add the packages you want to customize your vehicle. The F Sport has unique styling features and the adaptive suspension system, but it doesn’t add a performance upgrade. We’re still intrigued by the hybrid, which carries a $2,650 price differential over the comparably equipped gas model. Make it your choice if you have long-term ownership in mind.

The Big and Burly Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia is an enormous sport utility vehicle with room for seven. It is part of a small breed of traditional, truck-based models. In this case, it shares its underpinnings with the full-size Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

Though the market has shifted dramatically to car-based crossover utility vehicles, the Sequoia maintains its appeal in a niche dedicated to recreational pursuits, including camping, boating, fishing, and off-roading.


2020 Toyota Sequoia Review


For 2020, the Toyota Sequoia serves up its first TRD Pro trim, which was our test model. This year, the Tundra gains a new 7-inch touch-screen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Toyota offers the 2020 Sequoia in standard rear-wheel drive or available four-wheel drive. There are five trims for the choosing: SR5 ($49,980), TRD Sport ($52,695), Limited ($58,990), Platinum ($66,020), and TRD Pro ($64,105). Add $1,395 for the destination charge.



Exterior

What sets the TRD Pro apart from the Sequoia pack? A few things, including its big “TOYOTA” grille, Rigid LED fog lights, its Army Green patina, TRD black roof rack, 18-inch BBS forged-aluminum beaded wheels, and its black running boards. Together, these features represent distinctive items on the Sequoia.

The Sequoia’s canvas is as you would expect: raised, with strong shoulders, upright pillars, a slab body, and huge doors. Most trims come with LED headlamps, power-controlled and heated side mirrors, a power tilt-and-slide moonroof with a sunshade, and a power liftgate.

Interior

The Sequoia, along with the Toyota Land Cruiser, bring the full-bodied interior room to bear. But the Sequoia is slightly larger and better suited to hold the seven people it is designed to carry. The first two rows hold two individuals each with three-placement seating in the third row.

As expected, the best seats are upfront. They’re designed to cosset the driver and passenger, with ample back, hip, and thigh support. Do you wonder why some people are drawn to these types of vehicles? If they’re 6-foot-5-inches or taller, you’d understand.




We’re glad Toyota didn’t try to squeeze a bench seat in the second row. One would fit (and is available, if you must), but it would have rendered the third row mostly useless, especially for tall individuals. The second-row captain’s chairs, however, are supportive and comfortable on their own. They also fold and move forward for ease of access to the third row. That last row is best used by children, but adults can fit there for short trips.

The Sequoia’s interior is well behind the pack. It is more than a decade old and it looks it. The Expedition is the standard-bearer here and the two are far apart in looks (new GMC and Chevrolet models are on the way for 2021). The big knobs overwhelm the already large dashboard and the bulky center console. Average materials cover the cabin, including various painted silver trim touchpoints. We like the big center storage console and the double glove box, however.

You’ll find climate control, full power accessories, and power-controlled front seats. Most trims feature leather-covered seats. Heated and ventilated front seats are available.

Tech

Toyota cautiously expanded its smartphone capabilities, by first ensuring both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were compatible with its systems. Once it closed whatever gaps in proprietary software there were, it introduced the former followed by the latter. This year, the Sequoia has both systems available and a new touch-screen display at the ready.

The Sequoia TRD Pro comes with an 8-speaker audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth and Amazon Alexa connectivity, and two USB ports. Some trims include or offer navigation, but with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it isn’t necessary. JBL audio systems and a rear DVD entertainment system are other options of note.



Safety

Every Sequoia trim comes with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), a package that includes automatic headlamps, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, and dynamic cruise control. That’s not as generous a package and you’d find on more modern Toyota models, which come with such features as lane tracing assist and rear braking, but it is a welcome offering nonetheless.

Some trims, including the TRD Pro, come with blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Lane change assist and trailer sway control are also included.

Performance

Motivating the 2020 Sequoia is a Toyota V8 mainstay: a 5.7-liter engine with 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. It is the largest V8 that Toyota has ever offered in the U.S. Power travels to the rear or all four wheels, utilizing a 6-speed automatic transmission.

This powertrain combination is up to the task, but it isn’t the best in the industry. Ford with its twin-turbo V6 and GM with its small-block V8 offers more powerful and/or efficient options. Indeed, the Ford Expedition delivers more power and efficiency, while the Chevrolet Tahoe’s engine utilizes cylinder deactivation for improved fuel economy. Both manufacturers pair these engines with 10-speed automatic transmissions.

The Sequoia shows no lack of step-off power, accelerating steadily as it approaches highway speeds. But it is when operating under full throttle that the differences between this powertrain and its chief competitors become noticeable. The Sequoia’s transmission simply takes its time to find the right gear for the moment, whereas the Ford and GM units work fast and seamlessly.



No big SUV can handle twisty roads and cornering like a car, and we wouldn’t expect it to. After all, the high profile and steep payload combine to limit what this vehicle can do when it isn’t driving in a straight line.

Perhaps one of the most favorable attributes of our TRD Pro test model is its off-road capabilities. We weren’t able to take it on our favorite trails, which were still closed for the winter. But, gravel-covered backroads and adjacent clay sloughs proved its mettle. Indeed, we wouldn’t hesitate to take the Sequoia off-road except down narrow trails where a big SUV simply doesn’t belong.

In TRD Pro guise, the Sequoia shines brightest, thanks to ample under-body cladding. It also comes with Fox shock absorbers, designed to increase damping force for a more comfortable ride on the toughest terrain. It has a cat-back exhaust system, one that purrs when idling and roars under hard throttle.

Depending on the model, the 2020 Sequoia pulls between 7,000 to 7,400 pounds. That’s less than its competitors, but at least Toyota supplies a strong engine to handle the work. As for fuel efficiency, you’ll be hard-pressed to achieve the EPA-estimated 15 mpg combined this model delivers. At least it takes less-costly regular grade unleaded gasoline.



Competitive Set

There are very few mainstream competitors operating in the full-size SUV sphere. You’ll find the Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Tahoe, along with the Nissan Armada. There are a few other models to consider, including the Chevrolet Suburban and the GMC Yukon XL.


Our Recommendation


If you’re in pursuit of off-road adventuring, then the TRD Pro is the right place to look. It comes fully loaded with no options packages available, making its approximate $65,000 published cost a decent value in the segment. Discounting, though, should shave several thousands of dollars off your final cost.

Driven: Land Rover Range Rover Velar

Land Rover’s place in the SUV market is defined by two product lines: Range Rover and Discovery. The Range Rover series represents the apex of the brand, while the Discovery line is representative of those models we typically think of as Land Rover.

The Range Rover Velar is the third of four Range Rover models, situated between the Range Rover Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. The eponymous Range Rover is the range-topping model. The Velar, though, is no shrinking violet. It brings to the Range Rover line a distinctly modern look inside and out, and a long list of features.

Our focus model is the range-topping SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, which starts at $90,790. Our test model added a few extras, bringing its final cost to just above $95,000, including the destination charge.

Exterior

The Velar may be the most modern of all Range Rover models, although a case can also be made for the Evoque. This five-passenger midsize luxury SUV is more subdued upfront than some competitors, eschewing an oversized grille, deep cutouts, and huge lights for something more subtle.

But subtle doesn’t mean it lacks panache – the Velar simply finds a way to impart elegance without gauche. Who said sophistication must be over the top? Strong shoulders, powerful roof pillars, a high beltline, and a formal expression define this model.

The SVAutobiography delivers features unique to this trim, including 21- or 22-inch gloss dark gray wheels, red brake calipers, special paint options, and bright chrome trim. An active sports exhaust system, sports suspension, and a sliding panoramic roof are other features of note.



Interior

Just as Range Rover pulls off the exterior with a peerless design, the interior delivers its own winning attributes.

The Velar’s cabin is roomy, bright, and rich in luxurious appointments. The best seats are upfront and this is where Range Rover pulls out all the stops with plush, supportive thrones. They come heated and ventilated, and deliver massaging support. They’re ideal for your in-between visits to the chiropractor and likely will be used frequently to relax tight and tired back muscles.

As comfortable as the front seats are, it is the material that wows the senses. As you might expect, Range Rover offers standard leather-covered seats. They’re beautiful and comfortable, just as you would expect from this quintessential British marque. But it is the available woven-wool seats that look and feel best, a natural alternative we think is bound to become an industry pacesetter. And not just for its feel, but as a choice for consumers who don’t like animal hides.

The rear seat is best for two and bearable for three adults. The power-reclining outboard seatbacks are a welcome feature.

Other features of note include a heated steering wheel, metal touches such as aluminum gearshift handles, thick carpeting, and choice interior color combinations.

The Velar’s standard storage space measures 29.4 cubic feet or 60.2 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. These numbers are about average for the class. This SUV pulls up to 5,500 pounds when properly equipped.

Tech

Where some competitors have big screens bolted to the top of the center console, the Velar’s screens are integrated into the dashboard and center console. Yes, there are two 10-inch-screens at work, with each tasked with managing different controls, including the infotainment (top) and passenger comfort (bottom). Called Touch Pro Duo, the system enables navigation on the top screen while playing media on the bottom screen.

All models come with Smart Phone Pack, representing a suite of features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optionally, customers can upgrade to a rear-seat entertainment system with a pair of 8-inch screens embedded in the rear of the front-seat headrests. Choose this option if regular rood trips are part of your family’s experience.

Land Rover taps Meridian to supply its sound systems and the Velar offers choices worth considering. On the top end, the 22-speaker unit supplies concert-hall-like sound throughout the cabin with every seating position the “best seat in the house.”

Satellite radio and HD Radio are included; USB input, a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless phone charging, and Bluetooth are other features of note.



Safety

All Velar trims come with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and front and rear parking assist. Our top-trim model included each of the extras: driver attention monitoring, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, and a head-up display. Some mainstream models include most of these features as standard equipment.

Like other pricey models, neither the IIHS nor the NHTSA has put the Velar through crash testing. That said, we think its high-profile and weight are benefits that work in its favor.

Performance

Powering the SVAutobiography is a supercharged V8 engine with 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. This engine delivers massive amounts of power from the onset, enabling this two-ton-plus beast to scoot from 0-60 mph in just above four seconds. That’s laudable for any vehicle, but it seems even more impressive for this substantial SUV.

By utilizing a supercharger, this Velar enjoys full power from the start, although it drops somewhat at passing speed. That’s the opposite of a turbocharger that spools up to deliver its best power at wide-open throttle.

The Velar’s heft seems largely absent as the V8 pushes forward. Other Velar trims offer a 2.0-liter turbo-four or a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. This one is a far superior choice, but is exclusive to the top trim. All models work with an eight-speed automatic transmission, a knob-controlled unit that serves up cogs with ease.

With its air suspension, the Velar almost feels as if it floats, with the cabin well isolated from rough road surfaces. The steering is light, but engaging. This SUV handles reasonably well on twisty roads and while pulling out of corners but make no mistake that this is a high-profile vehicle and it can’t match the Jaguar F-Type in corner-carving.

You can take the Velar off-road with its terrain response system enabling your excursion. We think, though, the Defender is the better choice in this department, although the Velar’s active rear locking differential proves its mettle.

Competitive Set

One of the Velar’s closest competitors is the Jaguar F-Pace, its corporate cousin. Other models to consider include the Porsche Macan, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q5, BMW X5, and the Volvo XC60.


Our Recommendation


Inasmuch as the Velar SVAutobiography is an outstanding trim in its own right, we think the middle Velar S trim is the best choice. This one comes with the twin-turbo six-cylinder engine and supplies access to many trim embellishments, audio upgrades, and design features. You’ll pay about $70,000 for a well-equipped model, which is still thousands of dollars less than some competitors.

Highlights of the 2020 Porsche Macan

The 2020 Macan is one of two Porsche SUVs.

We love Porsche, arguably the best brand of vehicles in the world. In the early part of this century, the company expanded beyond its sports car roots by introducing the Cayenne SUV in 2003. Seven years later it followed with its first sedan, the Panamera. Today, we see a fleet evenly divided between sports cars and other vehicles, thanks to the small Macan SUV which rolled out in 2015. The Macan borrows elements from across the Porsche spectrum, deliver an inspiring utility vehicle on a small footprint.

What’s New for 2020

Now in its sixth year, the first-generation Macan features updated engines with more power. As for the rest of the lineup, the changes are small.

Porsche Macan Highlights

Room for five, in a pinch. The Porsche Macan seats five, at least on paper. The front seats are the ideal place to seat with comfortable thrones at the ready. The rear split-bench seat is best for two and three, but only in a pinch. Still, the amount of legroom available is quite limited, which means the back seat is most suitable for youngsters. With 17.6 cubic feet of standard storage space, the Macan may not be the vehicle you take on long trips. That said, if it is just the two of you, that space nearly triples with the rear seat folded.

Excellent fit, finish, and quality. Porsche never disappoints us in all things quality. The Macan, with a starting price just above $50,000 maintains our expectations. The look, fit, and finish is what you’d expect, with quality materials throughout. You’ll find various leather and suede finishes on most models with aluminum, wood, and carbon fiber also available. Porsche supplies a dizzying level of customization that’ll give your Macan a unique look.

Three engine choices. What’s under the hood of a Porsche may be the most important element of this brand. You’ll find three engine choices, beginning with a 2.0-liter turbocharged flat-four with 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The second engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder with 348 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The third engine is a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder, which generates 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It’s output increases to a whopping 434 horsepower in the top-end Porsche Turbo model. All-wheel-drive and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission are standard.

Fast and furious. You’d expect any Porsche model to be fast and the Macan is all that and more. At least when moving beyond the base engine. Sure, the turbo four-cylinder engine is sprightly, but it doesn’t deliver nearly the performance numbers you’d expect in a Porsche. The middling 3.0-liter V6 is the better choice as it supplies excellent step-off acceleration and passing power. But it is the twin-turbo six-cylinder that’s the performance maven, as it delivers raw off-the-mark acceleration and inspiring passing power. Regardless of the chosen engine, the Macan supplies direct steering, terrific handling, and track aspirations. Its higher profile means it isn’t as connected to the road, but not by much. The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is amazing with its clean and quick shifts. You may miss a manual, but this one shines!

Safety and technology is a mixed bag. When it comes to safety features, you’ll pay extra to receive most of the driver-assist technologies we expect these days. Lane departure warning is standard, but everything else is extra, including blind-spot warning, active lane control, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. The list of standard in-cabin tech features includes a 10.9-inch touch-screen display, USB input, a 10-speaker audio system, and navigation. The list of options is impressive and includes an alluring Burmeister audio package.

Making Your Macan

The base Macan model costs $52,000, while a fully loaded Porsche Turbo model will run around $85,000. That’s a lot of money to pay for a small SUV from a luxury make, but it isn’t your run-of-the-mill model either. Indeed, with performance and luxury features combined, this SUV delivers a complete package and may have you reconsidering your Porsche 718 Cayman want.

Living Large: Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV

The Mercedes-Benz GLS is a full-size SUV with room for seven.
It features a mild hybrid system and has two engine choices.

Mercedes-Benz has comfortably found its spot in the utility vehicle sphere, offering a variety of models to suit almost every need. This renowned German manufacturer of luxury vehicles still produces multiple lines of cars, but it is its SUVs that draw the lion’s share of customers.

For 2020, Mercedes-Benz serves up an all-new GLS, which has long served as a flagship for its SUV line. Yes, that argument can be made for the far pricier G-Class. But the “G Wagon” is very much a niche or halo model, and not representative of what the average luxury buyer will consider.


2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS Review


The 2020 GLS is offered in GLS 450 ($75,950) and GLS 580 ($98,800) trims. That’s about $5,000 more than the 2019 model, but Mercedes-Benz added many tech features, including a 48-volt battery system.

Numerous packages and individual upgrades, especially with the standard model, will push your final cost northward accordingly. The GLS seats seven across its three rows.

Exterior

The full-size luxury SUV segment has its share of over-the-top models, but the GLS seems more subdued than most. It eschews oversized grilles and bigly taillamps for a more conservative design, although that doesn’t mean it is plain. Indeed, the GLS delivers a refined presence and, therefore, likely attracts a share of M-B faithful making the switch from a car to an SUV for the first time.

Each model comes with a full array of LED lighting front and back. Mercedes equips the GLS with standard 19-inch wheels, power-folding and heated side mirrors, and a power liftgate. Various packages bring in such features as gloss black exterior highlights, 21-inch wheels with black accents, a trailer hitch, and a panoramic sunroof.

Interior

Lavish is the appropriate word to describe the GLS’ interior. That’s no surprise as this marque rarely sells itself short, even with its entry-level models. Mercedes takes great care with its designs, making sure every detail is properly executed.

The power-controlled front seats are very comfortable and are heated. Ventilation and massaging are included with the 580. But the power seating doesn’t stop with the front seats. Indeed, both the second-row 60/40 split bench seat and the third-row 50/50 split-bench seat are power controlled. Other features include a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, dual-zone climate control (five zones in the 580), a power tilt-and-slide sunroof, and a retractable and removable storage cover.

There are many upgrades available, including six-passenger seating capacity whereby the center bench seat is swapped out for pair of captain’s chairs. Specially contoured bench seats, ventilated front seats, heated second- and third-row seats, heated first- and second-row armrests, aluminum and wood trim upgrades, a textile upper dashboard, and leather options are other choices.

The best seats in the house are in the first two rows with limited legroom in the third row. We think youngsters will do fine in the last row. The standard storage space measures 17.4 cubic feet with approximately 45 cubic feet behind the second row and 84.7 cubic feet with both seats folded.

Tech

“12.3” is a magic number for Mercedes-Benz. That’s the size for both the digital instrument panel and the center console. They sit side by side and seem like a singular, enormous panel. It’s an awe-inspiring design that isn’t simply eye candy. The display is both knob and touch-screen controlled.

The list of standard features includes a Burmeister audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, satellite radio, HD Radio, wireless charging, a 115-volt power outlet, and a whopping 9 USB ports. An upgraded Burmeister audio system is also available.

Safety

Mercedes equips the GLS with automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and cross-traffic alert. Advanced features, such as active lane control, automatic lane change assist, brake assist, distance control and the like are bundled within an option package.

The GLS also comes with something called “Car-to-X communication,” which is a function that’s ahead of its time. Specifically, it serves as the precursor technology that’s coming down the pike, namely enabling the driver to “see” down the road several bends in advance, to gain advanced notice of upcoming hazards. Although this feature is in place, it isn’t yet practical for everyday use.

Performance

The GLS is a tale of two engines. We think most shoppers will be happy with the standard 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that comes with the GLS 450 model. Upgrading to the GLS 580 supplies you with a 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine. You’ll also pay nearly $23,000 for the upgrade, although the added cost includes many amenities beyond the V8 engine.

You’ll find 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque with the standard engine. That’s equivalent to a small-block V8 and should, therefore, satisfy most people. But there is also a “secret sauce” at play, namely a 48-volt battery system. This one adds 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque under full throttle, and does likewise in the V8. Both engines work with a 9-speed automatic transmission that’s tasked with sending power to all four wheels.

It was this particular arrangement under the hood of our test drive vehicle, which gave us ample opportunities to put it through the paces. Happily, the inline-six shined, beginning with generous step-off acceleration and ample passing power. One result of the auxiliary 48V system is that it mitigates turbo lag. We also think this kind of hybrid arrangement will soon become widespread, especially as the extra voltage handles increasingly larger electrical demand brought on by sophisticated navigation and infotainment systems as well as through safety equipment packages and upcoming autonomous drive.

The GLS is a bulky vehicle with very little steering feedback, but it does provide nimble handling. The ride is very comfortable with even some of the harshest bumps absorbed by the suspension system. Mercedes offers a four-wheel traction control system for off-road pursuits, although we doubt there are but a few people who would buy one with off-roading in mind.

If the standard engine doesn’t rock your world, then the beefy V8 with 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque will win your heart. The performance numbers don’t include the auxiliary 48-volt system that simply pushes these figures yet higher. We can hardly imagine what a likely AMG version will supply or a possible Maybach variant.

Competitive Set

The BMW X7 and Audi Q7 are just two competitors to consider. You’ll also find in this segment the Cadillac Escalade, Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, Infiniti QX80, Lexus LX, and the upcoming Genesis GV80. Most competitors come with standard rear-wheel drive. The Audi is all-wheel-drive only.


Our Recommendation


If money is no consideration, the GLS 580 with every option taken is where you’ll begin your search. Quite easily, you’ll reach the $100K limit and surge well above that figure in short order.

Our pick is the base engine as it is more than suitable for the task at hand. With the electric generator spooled up, the level of performance increases substantially. In any case, various package offerings should bring your final price to around $90,000.

Highlights of the 2020 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge ST has a specially-tuned turbocharged V6 engine.

The Ford Edge is a midsize, two-row utility vehicle, one of the earliest models in what was once a segment dominated by three-row models. The 2020 Edge is part of the second-generation line introduced for the 2015 model year. This year, dual-zone climate control is now standard. Also, the audio system no longer includes a CD player.

The Edge sits between the compact Escape and the three-row Explorer in Ford’s utility vehicle lineup.

Highlights of the 2020 Edge

Mainstream to premium to performance. The Ford Edge comes in SE, SEL, Titanium, and ST trims. The base model aligns with what you’d expect in this segment, with soft-touch materials, brightwork trim, and cloth seats included. Move up the Titanium trim and Ford upgrades the appearance, by including real chrome, leather-trimmed seats, and upgraded technologies. The ST model is the performance leader and reflects that look with special ST embroidery and other demarcations.

Room for five with ample storage. Front or back, the Ford Edge offers generous passenger space with room for five. There is no penalty seat in the house, although the passenger sitting in the middle position on the rear bench seat might argue otherwise. In any case, there is enough room to stretch and move about. The Edge supplies 39.2 cubic feet of standard storage space and 73.4 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.

Two strong engine choices. Ford supplies the Edge with a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. Power routes to the front or to all four wheels by means of an 8-speed automatic transmission. Customers will also find a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 engine, which is exclusive to the ST, an all-wheel-drive model. This one throws down 335 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque and works with an 8-speed transmission.

Infotainment done right. Ford knocked it out of the park with the Edge’s infotainment system. Every model comes with its highly useful SYNC 3 system which seems lightyears ahead of everything before it. This voice-controlled system is bundled with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, Bluetooth, six speakers, two USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Among the upgrades, you’ll find a 115-volt power outlet, wireless device charging, and 9- and 12-speaker audio packages.

Lots of safety tech. You’ll find active lane control, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking on every 2020 Edge model. Among the additional features available (and offered separately) are 180-degree front camera system, adaptive cruise control, and the industry’s only inflatable rear safety belts.

Average towing, at best. If you’re looking to tow, a properly equipped Edge will pull 1,500 pounds with the base engine. That’s certainly not outstanding. Choose the V6 model and it can pull up to 3,500 pounds, which should suffice for many owners. But if you require more robust towing capabilities, you may want to turn to the three-row Explorer as this model pulls from 3,000 to 5,600 pounds, depending on how it is equipped.

Making the Grade

The Ford Edge holds its own, thanks to handsome styling, two strong engine choices, varying trim levels, and utility. Prices can move well above $40,000 when well equipped, which pushes it into luxury territory, but without the brand cache. Fortunately, Ford discounting is typically very generous, with strong savings available whether you pay cash, finance or lease.

What’s Up With Mitsubishi?

As an early supplier of small vehicles to the Chrysler Corporation, Mitsubishi Motors has sold cars on its own stateside for nearly four decades. At one time, the company was a notable player in the market and even had a manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, for building its vehicles – originally in partnership with Chrysler, then on its own.

But much has changed since. The DiamondStar partnership with Chrysler is long gone and, likewise, the Illinois manufacturing plant is now owned by Rivian, who will begin building electric trucks and SUVs there by the end of 2020. Consequently, all current Mitsubishi models are imported from Japan.

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance

Even Mitsubishi’s structure has changed as the company is now controlled by Nissan and it has become the third partner in “the Alliance,” which also includes Renault. In the U.S., we have yet to see Mitsubishi acquire Nissan- or Renault-sourced vehicles to add to its product line, as the Alliance is in jeopardy and Nissan itself seeks to distance itself from the Carlos Ghosn era.

These days, Mitsubishi has nearly completed its transition to an all-SUV maker, with three distinct models and one car line serving the American consumer as well as one plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Its famed Lancer and Evo compacts are long gone as is the i-MiEV, the company’s early experiment in full electrification.

2020 Mitsubishi Product Line

For 2020, Mitsubishi has Eclipse Cross, Outlander Sport, and Outlander utility vehicles as well as the tiny Mirage, a subcompact sedan/hatchback offering. Although there is nothing remarkable about the four models, each one comes with many of the tech and safety features customers want, along with a robust warranty plan to keep customers in the fold.

Looking ahead, it appears Mitsubishi will bring back the Evolution, its top-end Lancer model, but perhaps only in Evo form. Also, the company is developing a larger utility vehicle to slot above the Outlander, although the next-generation Outlander itself will have a larger footprint. Other changes include electrifying the entire lineup, which means PHEV and pure EV variants of every model should be offered.

In all, Mitsubishi is exactly where the company wants to be at this point, with new products on the way. That Mitsubishi has managed to survive in a highly competitive market is quite a feat. We’ll see what the next chapter brings and whether the story continues to unfold positively for this Japanese brand

Buick 2020: What’s New

The Buick brand has enjoyed huge success in the U.S. and abroad, but particularly in China where its sales are six times that of the U.S. In the domestic market, Buick sales have doubled over the past decade, benefitting from new products, including high-demand utility vehicles.

On face value, the Buick brand should remain strong, but China is a huge concern, especially as that nation grapples with the coronavirus (COVID-19), which has killed thousands and has essentially shut down the consumer market. If the virus isn’t soon contained, the outlook for Buick, GM, and all of the automotive world will certainly be gravely affected.

We can’t know the future, but we can surmise that under the right conditions, the Buick brand will continue to set itself apart from the other GM brands. That said, its partner brand, GMC, remains the larger of the two and will likely continue to benefit from more model offerings going forward, including its Hummer line of electric vehicles.

Buick Now and Later

Here is what’s new with Buick for 2020 and what we can expect looking forward.

The LaCrosse sedan is discontinued. Sedan sales are plummeting the world over, but especially in the U.S. For Buick, its large LaCrosse sedan has gone away as customers continue to shift to crossovers, including the Enclave.

Speaking of the Enclave, a new Sport Touring Package rolls out. This package features a unique sport grille with body-color surround and 20-inch bright machined aluminum wheels with contrasting Satin Graphite pockets. It’s available on the Enclave Essence trim level.

An all-new Encore GX model arrives. Not to be confused with the Encore, the Encore GX is an all-new model, which slots between the Encore and Envision. Arriving this spring, the Korean-built Encore GX gives buyers a choice of two turbocharged three-cylinder engines. It comes packed with tech and safety features and should target BMW X2 shoppers. It’s also about the same size as the Mazda CX-30.

Future model changes on tap. We expect the Regal models will go away after this year, leaving Buick with an all-SUV lineup. One of the next models planned is the Buick Enspire, a crossover based on the Cadillac XT4, and pricier than the Buick Envision. We may see both hybrid and full-electric versions at some point, but we expect its U.S. debut will be moved back to 2021. The reason? This made-in-China coupe-like SUV will likely encounter delays related to COVID-19 manufacturing idleness.

Buick and Other GM Brands

Buick’s survival in a shrinking GM universe is remarkable. Oldsmobile was canceled earlier this century, followed by Saturn, Saab, Pontiac, and Hummer. Later, GM sold Vauxhall and Opel to Peugeot, and plans to shut down Holden in 2021. That leaves Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac to hold the GM banner, with only Chevrolet having anything resembling a global presence.
