Six (Five) Engine Choices With the 2020 GMC Sierra

Shop for a GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck and you’ll find a dizzying array of cab choices, trim levels, and package offerings. That’s typical in a segment where customization is the name of the game.

What’s also part of the equation is the number of engine choices: six, to be precise. That’s double what the Ford F-150 offers, the best-selling model in the segment. Yes, two of the engines are in reality the same: a 5.3-liter V8, which works with different transmissions. We’ll take a look at the engines, where they’re offered, and mention payload and towing capabilities when properly equipped.

GMC Engine Family

GMC starts things off with the familiar, namely a 4.3-liter V6. It’s a workhorse introduced in 1985, but it has undergone numerous changes since. In the late 2000s, the engine finally did away with its distributor. In 2013, GM released the third generation of this engine (EcoTec3), which includes cylinder deactivation, direct fuel injection and continuously variable valve timing technologies (same as the two V8s). This one makes 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, works with a 6-speed automatic transmission, is payload-rated up to 2,240 pounds, and has a maximum towing capacity of 7,900 pounds.

The second engine in our list is also the fourth engine: a 5.3-liter V8. This small-block engine produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Depending on the trim selected, GMC pairs it with either a 6-, 8-, or 10-speed automatic transmission. This engine has a 11,300-pound pulling capacity in crew cab models.

So far, we’ve looked at V6 and V8 engine choices. The third engine is perhaps the most interesting one of all: a turbocharged inline-four displacing 2.7 liters. Yes, four cylinders. We tested this one in a Chevrolet Silverado and were impressed by how well it performed. Indeed, it makes 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque, numbers that exceed small V8s from previous generations. You can’t get this engine with the regular cab and its maximum trailering capacity is a modest 6,900 pounds. Power travels to the wheels utilizing an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The fifth engine is the power king of the pack, a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Power travels to the wheels utilizing a 10-speed automatic transmission. This beefy V8 also has the most pulling performance of the lot, coming in at 12,100 pounds for the Double Cab.

Diesel power is now available with the GMC and Chevrolet, matching Ram and Ford in this offering. This inline-six produces 277 horsepower and matches the 460 pound-feet of torque of the gas V8. Its very fuel-efficient too, with an EPA-estimated 30 mpg highway rating. A 10-speed automatic transmission and a 9,100-pound towing capacity are other features of note.

2020 GMC Sierra

GMC still builds the previous-generation Sierra, calling it the Sierra Limited. Available only as a double cab, short-box truck, this one has the 5.3-liter V6 and the 6-speed automatic transmission.

In all, the GMC Sierra (along with the Chevrolet Silverado) offer compelling choices in the segment. Discounting is rampant, so shop carefully as some deals top $10,000 on fully loaded models.

Bigger Yet: 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban SUVs

Chevrolet’s largest SUVs are completely overhauled for 2021, all-new models that are also larger than ever. The Chevrolet Tahoe (standard wheelbase) and Chevrolet Suburban (stretched wheelbase) are what make the bow-tie brand the top seller in a segment with few non-GM players, most notably the Ford Expedition. Count the Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada as competitors as well, at least with the Tahoe.

We’ve been expecting new Chevrolet SUVs ever since GM updated its full-size pickup trucks in 2019. Based on the same architecture underpinning the Chevrolet Silverado (and GMC Sierra), the new SUVs roll out next summer. We’ll see new GMC Yukon/Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV models as well. Production output for all three brands is handled at GM’s manufacturing plant in Arlington, Texas, which is under renovation to accommodate the new and larger models.

There is a lot to digest about the new Chevrolet models, so we’ll explore the three main highlights.


2021 Chevrolet Tahoe.


1. A new rear suspension.

The most significant change for the Tahoe and Suburban isn’t the larger size, roomier cabin or expanded storage space, although the latter two benefit from the new independent rear suspension. Gone is the live axle and leaf springs currently used, exchanged for an independent rear multilink suspension arrangement with coil springs. As a result, Chevrolet lowers the floor of its two large SUVs, which supplies additional cargo room and more space for the second- and third-row passengers.
The benefits of the new suspension system include superior ride and handling. It’s also beneficial for off-roading as this setup allows vehicles to flex better. True, you’re not likely to take either the Tahoe or Suburban on tough trails navigated by the Jeep Wrangler, but you should see improved movement on sandy surfaces.

2. Bigger and roomier.

How much larger are the two Chevrolet SUVs? The 2021 Tahoe will sit on a 120.9 wheelbase, up from 116 inches. Its overall length measures 210.7 inches, compared to the current 204 inches.

As for the Chevy Suburban, it’ll ride on a 134.1-inch wheelbase, up from 130 inches. Its overall length grows to 225.7 inches, up from 224.4 inches. Thus, the difference between the Tahoe and Suburban narrows slightly with the new model.

Inside, the cargo space increases appreciably, to a total of 122.9 cubic feet in the Tahoe and 144.7 cubic feet in the Suburban. One of the most significant changes in the Tahoe’s it its standard cargo space which measures 25.5 cubic feet behind the third row, up from the scant 15.3 cubic feet currently offered.

Another area where the Tahoe shines is with its third-row legroom. The current model offers just 24.8 inches and that’s suitable only for children. For 2021, the space measures 34.9 inches, which is tolerable for most adults. That’s also near the 36.7 inches offered by the Suburban.




3. Three engine choices.

Every Tahoe and Silverado model except for the High Country come with a 5.3-liter V8 engine. The standard engine makes 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. As for the High Country, it gets a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The third engine choice is a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 engine, making 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All three work with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

While the two gas engines are well known, the diesel is new to the product line and a first for the segment. It’s a niche engine for Chevrolet, one that could help the automaker improve its fuel economy ratings, especially if the highway numbers approach 30 mpg.

The Verdict

We haven’t driven the new Chevrolets yet, but on paper, the 2021 models offer compelling updates that should interest consumers. The current models start at $49,000 (Tahoe) and $51,700 (Suburban), plus the freight cost. We expect a cost increase and we soon know just how much the turbo-diesel option adds to it.

GM Diesel Pickup Fast Facts

The General Motors Company makes diesel engines under the Duramax name. Most of us are familiar with the 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 available with heavy-duty Chevrolet and GMC models. We may even be familiar with the 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine available in smaller trucks such as the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.

But there is a third engine, this one a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six, which has received much press lately. This particular engine is available in light-duty Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 models. Importantly, it is the first time in a generation we’ve seen a light-duty diesel engine for these models. Thus, we’ll explore certain salient points about the new engine, an option to consider when shopping these models.

7 Fast Facts

1. Delayed by one model year.

GM originally planned to release the new diesel engine late in the 2019 model year. It was the last engine on the docket for the rollout of the all-new 2019 models, but the EPA slowed things down. After a three-month delay, GM decided to release the engines for the 2020 model year. As of publication, the first models equipped with the new turbo-diesel are available.

2. A clean-sheet design.

The new Duramax diesel isn’t a derivative of any other engine on the market. It is a clean-sheet design, which utilizes a lightweight aluminum engine block and cylinder head. Ceramic glow plugs ensure a quicker start on frigid days, thus an engine block heater isn’t needed until temperatures reach -22 degrees F (-30 C).

3. Copious amounts of power.

Small in size, the inline-six is a powerhouse with an output of 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. Ninety-five percent of its peak torque is reached at a very low 1,250 RM, with 100 percent sustained from 1,500 to 3,000 RPM. GM marries this engine to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford also utilizes a 10-speed, while Ram has an 8-speed. One further note: neither the competing Toyota Tundra, nor the Nissan Titan offers a diesel option (The Titan XD has a 5.0-liter Cummins turbo-diesel, but that engine is going away after 2019).

4. Robust payload and towing.

Choose the four-wheel-drive Chevy or GMC and you’ll find maximum payload of 1,870 pounds and a top towing capability of 9,300 pounds. The truck’s trailering capabilities will satisfy most needs, with the 6.2-liter gas V8 handling the rest.

5. Top-notch fuel efficiency.

Fuel economy hasn’t always been a big deal in a segment that emphasizes size, payload, and towing capabilities. Indeed, gas engines typically average 15 mpg, which pales in comparison to what cars are making these days. The new engine, however, changes that as equipped two-wheel-drive models earn an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway for a combined 27 mpg. Choose the four-wheel-drive model and these numbers are 23/29/25 mpg city/highway/combined.

6. Best in class fuel economy.

GM claims bragging rights with the new diesel, beating its top competition, namely the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150. Both manufacturers have diesels with nearly identical displacements. The two-wheel-drive 2019 Ram makes an EPA-estimated 20/27/23 mpg city/highway/combined, while the four-wheel-drive version comes in at 19/27/22 mpg. As for the 2019 F-150, its best fuel rating is 22/30/25 for two-wheel drive, while the four-wheel-drive model earns 21/28/24 mpg. It’ll be interesting to track how these numbers hold up under real-world conditions.

7. No price penalty.

Shop for an efficient engine and you’ll pay through the nose for it, right? This seems only logical, but happily, it isn’t so. You’ll still pay extra to acquire this engine, but GM assures us that you won’t. Notably, the company says this about the cost: “It is priced identically to the 6.2L V-8 as a $2,495 premium over a 5.3L V-8 model or $3,890 over a 2.7L Turbo model.” We like that GM is holding the line on prices.

Looking Ahead

The new turbo-diesel engine should serve as a boon for Chevrolet and GMC. Much has been made about the Chevrolet Silverado ceding its second-place sales standing to the Ram 1500 this year, but we think the new engine will serve as an important marketing catalyst. Competitively priced and efficient, we may see a spike in diesel demand across the board. The only significant downside is availability, as not all service stations carry diesel. And for those that do, diesel costs .25 to .50 more per gallon than regular gasoline, yet still costs less than premium-grade gasoline.

The Ram brand has been on an upward trajectory ever since it was separated from Dodge beginning in 2009. Ram Trucks represent a variety of utility-type vehicles, but its flagship product has always been its line of full-size pickup trucks, which are chiefly sold in North America.

Ram has steadily grown its brand with its big pickup trucks accounting for the majority of the growth. Indeed, the all-new-for-2019 pickups recently passed the Chevrolet Silverado line in U.S. sales, taking over second place behind the Ford F-150. The new trucks have received much praise for their styling inside and out, as well as for their updated powertrains and technologies.

2019 Ram 3500 Overview

Ram Trucks separates its full-size models into 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 Series lines. The 1500 is its light-duty line, while its 2500 and 3500 models represent its heavy-duty trucks. As for the 4500 and 5500, these ones are commercial grade vehicles — chassis cab models that are routinely upfitted into dump trucks, panel trucks, ambulances, and so forth.

There is one thing common to most 3500, 4500, and 5500 models — available dual rear wheels (DRW). Ram offers this arrangement with both its rear- (4×2) and four- (4×4) wheel-drive trucks. It supplies improved handling and towing, the latter raising Ram’s already lofty towing capabilities skyward.

For 2019, the Ram 3500 is available in Regular, Mega and Crew Cab configurations. Besides 4×2 and 4×4, you’ll find either six-foot-four-inch or eight-foot boxes. You also have a choice of either a 6.4-liter heavy-duty V8 HEMI gas engine or a 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six turbodiesel engine. Ram further separates the Cummins offering into standard and high-output options. The gas engine works with an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the diesel is paired with one of two six-speed automatic transmissions.

Five model choices are available, beginning with the Tradesman regular cab 4×2 ($36,540). From there, your choices include the Big Horn ($40,890), Laramie ($52,245), Laramie Longhorn ($59,545), and Limited ($67,685) models. These prices include the $1,695 destination charge. The Tradesman and Big Horn are offered in Regular, Mega and Crew Cab configurations, while the other three do not offer the Regular Cab. Further, the Mega Cab is available only as a 4×4 model.

Are you confused yet? It only gets more confusing, which is why we don’t break down the various trims, packages, and offerings as we do with other model types. Instead, a visit to the Ram Trucks configurator page is in order.

Notwithstanding the many possible build-it-yourself outcomes, we couldn’t resist playing with the configurator ourselves in an effort to max out features and pricing. Would you believe our final price came in at $88,315 for a Ram 3500 Limited Crew Cab 4×4 model with an 8-foot box? That’s more than $20,000 in upgrades punctuated by the high-out turbo-diesel engine.

A Matter of Style

What’s old is new again. Initially introduced as the Dodge Ram 1500 in 2009 before dropping the Dodge appellation beginning in 2011. Dodge continued to build its fourth-generation pickup truck in 2019, renaming it the Ram Classic for one year as it overlapped with the new model. Fiat Chrysler is offering both models in an effort to fill back orders as well as to make a smooth transition to the new one. This move has paid off as sales are up 15 percent for the first quarter.

As for the Ram 3500, the new model receives its own take on big Ram goodness. Ram lent me a 3500 Big Horn 4×2 dually for a week, which was the first time a “dually” media fleet model came my way.

Is the Ram 3500 imposing? Heck, yeah. From bumper to bumper this truck makes its appearance known, as it delivers a formidable presence. Up front, the big grille is amplified by oversized “RAM” lettering, which is honed in by wing-like trim that also matches the LED headlight treatments. A sizable lower-grille opening and a beveled hood round out this truck’s frontal expression.

Ram takes the truck’s slab sides and adds special touches, including vent ports, oversized wheel arches, and trailer mirrors. The most striking feature of all is the truck bed, which expands out at the rear axle. Most designs add a sheetmetal overlay. Here, Ram offers an integrated design, which flows naturally. From the rear, the truck features a centered step bumper and LED tail lamps. A ram insignia is centered on the tailgate.

Inside, the cabin is spacious, but especially so with the crew cab model. This model is slightly wider and longer than the outgoing truck, therefore interior space benefits accordingly. Indeed, five big workers can sit in comfort (six with the available front bench seat).

Ram sought to raise available opulence with the new 3500 and has largely pulled this off. Not only does it provide a generous amount of interior storage, but some models include leather interiors with real wood trim. As for storage, the sliding storage compartment ahead of the oversized covered compartment between the front seats is a difference maker. My Big Horn model came with generously bolstered front bucket seats and a split-folding rear seat.

Safety & Technology

Fiat Chrysler’s UConnect interface is easily one of the best in the industry. Yes, there are different levels to this system, ranging from basic services with a tiny screen to a full-fledged operating unit with a 12-inch screen, depending on the FCA model, trim and package.

As for the Ram 3500, the system includes satellite radio, HD Radio, and Bluetooth streaming audio. The base models have the 5-inch screen, while package upgrades supply an 8.4-inch screen and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Additional package upgrades bring in the 12-inch touchscreen display and add a 17-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, Android Auto compatibility, and GPS antenna input. You’ll find 4G Wi-Fi connectivity on some trims too.

The Ram 3500 was not crash tested, although the 1500 has been. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 1500 its highest score in all test categories, although it reserves a “marginal” rating for headlight range and brightness, and “acceptable” for child seat anchors.

The list of standard safety features includes electronic roll mitigation, stability and traction control, hill start assist, trailer sway damping, and a rear backup camera. Some models add blind-spot and cross-path detection, front and rear park assist, and trailer brake control.

As for adaptive cruise control with full stop along with full-speed collision warning, you’ll find these features as part of an equipment group upgrade on select trims.

On the Road

The Ram 3500 is everything about power. The standard gas engine motivated my Big Horn test model and is rated at 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. Ram pairs this engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This particular truck’s payload capacity is nothing short of outstanding — up to 7,680 pounds with the gas engine. By the way, the payload covers the added weight in and on the vehicle, including all fluids, people, interior storage, and bed cargo.

Inasmuch as the brawny V8 wins the payload capacity advantage (the Cummins peaks about 2,000 pounds under), it is the stout diesel that supplies the strongest comprehensive power — 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. The Cummin’s 6.7-liter inline-six, however, trails the Chevrolet Silverado HD’s 6.6-liter turbo-diesel V8 (445 horsepower and 910 foot-pounds of torque) as well as the Ford Super Duty’s 6.7-liter turbo-diesel V8 (450 horsepower and 935 foot-pounds of torque).

This year, Ram also offers a high-output version of the Cummins engine, which delivers an even 400 horsepower and 1,000 pounds of torque. The latter number represents a new threshold, one that manufacturers fought to achieve for several years. Ram reached it first, although we expect Ford and GM to follow.

The battle under the hood translates into trailering bragging rights. Even then, the current Silverado is on top at 35,500 pounds followed by Ram at 35,100 pounds. Ford comes in with 35,000 pounds. These numbers cover fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing. Standard towing is considerably lower and falls to as low as 14,080 pounds with the gas engine, depending on the cab and drivetrain configuration. Still, the ability to pull somewhere between seven and more than 17 tons is simply stunning.

Two rear wheels are definitely better than one, especially for towing. But they’re also ideal for keeping this big truck planted when you’re not towing. That’s a big reason why DRW models are beloved by contractors, landscape architect crews, and anyone else prizing these attributes.

Make no mistake: this Ram’s sheer size is intimidating — for drivers and other vehicles alike. The gas engine is certainly up to the task, even as it moves more than three tons of girth. This truck’s step-off acceleration is robust — the only caution is to ensure the rear wheels have enough room to leave a driveway without taking down shrubbery or a mailbox. There is ample power at all times and the transmission shifts with precision. Under hard acceleration, this burly truck presses onward with authority. On two-lane roads, it takes some getting used to driving — the rear wheels and side mirrors stick out far enough to where concern for cyclists is an issue.

The brakes are strong, but you’ll need to allow for extra stopping time. Of course, this is especially important if you’re pulling anything. But you knew that, right? As for the ride, you won’t find anything more comfortable, likely due in part to the dual rear wheels. Perhaps the most significant challenge lies with the turning radius as you’ll need all the room you can get.

Auto Trends Recommends

Four rear wheels are better than two, right? In some cases, this is definitely true. I can see anyone who needs to tow a massive amount of cargo opting for a dually as the wider stance increases stability under these conditions. You’ll enjoy the supplemental benefit of a decreased risk in overloading. Braking is also better, while the extra set of tires comes in handy if you lose one during a blowout.

As for a recommendation, a crew cab offers maximum passenger capacity, which is a priority for many work crews. My test model was rear-wheel drive and is likely sufficient for most. It also offers a slightly better benefit in towing, so only opt for four-wheel drive if you think you’ll need it.

Lastly, the Cummins option is enticing, but it does come at a sizable cost: $9,100 for the standard one and $11,795 for the high-output version. Regardless of your choice, added pulling power is a big reason to upgrade as well as a diesel’s durability and longevity.

Highlights of the 2019 Nissan Titan XD

The 2019 Nissan Titan XD is now in its fourth year.

We’re no stranger to the Nissan Titan XD, a model we first previewed in December 2015 ahead of its introduction.

To quickly clear the air, there are two full-size pickup trucks from Nissan. The standard Titan rolled out in 2004, skipped the 2016 model year before the second-generation model followed in 2017. In 2016, as Nissan was readying the new model, the company released the Titan XD, which is neither a light- nor a heavy-duty pickup truck. Notably, the trucks are similar, but each sits on uniquely separate fully-boxed ladder frames.

With the Titan XD, Nissan identified a “white space” between the two model segments, which is where this model sits. In other words, if Ford wanted to supply a model between its standard F-150 and Super Duty variants, that’s where you would find it. The same goes for Chevrolet, GMC, and Ram.

Nissan’s white space endeavor is all about providing customers with a cost-effective solution to heavy-duty models, which also supply literally tons of towing capacity. The company believes that there are customers who want the size of the larger pickup trucks, but they don’t need the towing capacity (and the attendant higher cost) of a Super Duty or other competing model.

Thus, the 2019 Titan XD starts around $33,000 and peaks at nearly double that price. Perhaps, more importantly, is that a Cummins turbo-diesel V8 engine is in the mix, representing a smaller or more cost-effective alternative to the big types of diesel offered by its competitors. Further, the turbo-diesel supplies a pulling capacity of just under 13,000 pounds (in the 4×2 single cab). That’s more than what any of its light-duty diesel-powered competitors offer.

The following are the highlights of the 2019 Nissan Titan XD:

1. You now have a choice of three cabs.

Early on, the Titan XD was offered as a Crew (standard four-door) cab model only. But the product line eventually expanded to include King (four-door with rear pivoting rear doors) and single cab models.

Further, Nissan also offers the King cab with “rear seat delete,” which lowers the cost by a few hundred dollars as it frees up interior storage room. The Titan XD now matches its chief competitors in available cab types.

2. The short and long of it.

2019 Nissan Titan XDThe single and king cab models share the same 139.8-inch wheelbase, while the crew cab has 151.6 inches between the wheels.

However, only the single cab comes with an 8-foot (98.5 inches) bed. The other two cab styles have a 6.5-foot (78.7 inches) bed.

The boxes are drainable, watertight and suitable for holding cold drinks. They’re also removable, freeing up bed capacity when needed.

3. Your pick of Endurance and Cummins engines.

The Titan XD gives customers a choice of V8 engines. The standard Endurance 5.6-liter gasoline V8 (390 hp; 394 lb.-ft. of torque) replaced an earlier engine of the same displacement, adding variable valve event & lift and direct-injection technologies.

Nissan also secured an engine from Cummins, the diesel manufacturer which also supplies engines to Ram pickup trucks. A 5.0-liter turbo-diesel V8 (310 hp; 555 lb.-ft. of torque), originally developed by Cummins for Chrysler, became available and serves this Nissan exclusively.

This diesel doesn’t attempt to take on the torque or towing power of the industry’s heavy-duty leaders. Instead, it’s designed to surpass the performance of light-duty trucks and does so with its near 13,000-pound towing capacity.

If you want a Cummins upgrade, you’ll add upwards of $5,630 to your cost.

4. Different transmissions for each engine.

Nissan uses internally and externally designed transmissions to send power to the wheels. Both transmissions are controlled by a column-mounted shifter.

A 7-speed automatic transmission works with the gasoline engine, while a heavy-duty Aisin 6-speed unit works with the turbo-diesel. The Aisin transmission is specifically designed to handle the elevated torque found in the diesel.

5. Up to five trims available.

Ah, trim levels! They’re what turns a bare-bones model into a luxury vehicle the further you move up the trim range. The Titan XD, though, doesn’t make every trim level available across the entire model range.

2019 Nissan Titan XDFor instance, the regular cab features just two — S and SV, but you do get your choice of two- or four-wheel drive and both engine choices. The S model features a 40/20/40 split fold-down front seat and vinyl flooring. It does, however, include navigation. Choose the SV and you gain carpeted flooring, stain-resistant cloth seats, trailer brake control, and an integrated gooseneck hitch with a 7-pin in-bed wiring harness.

With the king cab, a PRO-4X edition joins the S and SV. What’s interesting about this trim is that it comes with standard four-wheel drive, Bilstein off-road performance shocks, an electronic locking rear differential, a transfer case skid plate, and hill descent control.

2019 Nissan Titan XDChoose the Titan XD crew cab and you’ll find two additional trims, bringing the total to five. You should also know that this model is four-wheel-drive only, regardless of the trim.

The SL brings in such features as remote engine start, leather seats, a power-sliding back window, NissanConnect services and a 10- or 12-speaker Fender audio system. The top-of-the-line Platinum Reserve pulls out all the stops as it includes special aluminum-alloy wheels with painted arch moldings and rocker panels, an around-view monitor, and dark running boards.

6. Numerous packages to choose from.

Besides offering varying trim levels, Nissan supplies Titan XD shoppers with a variety of packages to choose from.

The S 4×2 trims, however, do not offer packages. With the 4×4 models, you’ll find a few, including the S Utility Package ($845, front overhead storage console, factory-applied spray-on bedliner, Class IV tow hitch receiver) and a Heavy Duty Front GAWR Package ($150, high-capacity front springs).

Choose the SV and you’ll find two package choices. The first is the SV Convenience Package ($1,395, automatic headlights, aluminum-alloy wheels, all-season tires, power-heated and manually extended tow mirrors, black step rails, keyless entry with push-button start, voice recognition for audio and navigation, satellite radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, front and rear sonar system, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert). The second one builds on the first (SV Utility Package, $1,145, track channel system with four tie-down cleats, spray-on bedliner, LED under-rail bed lighting, bed-mounted 120-volt power outlet, tailgate area illumination).

The Pro-4X also offers its own Utility Package ($1,445, 10- or 12-speaker Fender audio with 7-inch color display, power sliding rear window with defroster, bed channel system, LED under-rail bed lighting, tailgate area illumination, 120-volt power outlet, front and rear sonar system, electronic tailgate lock, rear bumper step assist). Building on this package is the Pro-4X Convenience Package ($3,545, remote engine start, leather seats, heated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, four-way power front passenger seat, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, power tilt-and-telescopic steering column). There is also a Premium Package ($1,545, around view monitor, side mirrors with a reverse tilt-down feature, climate-controlled front seats — heating and cooled, Titan boxes).

With the SL trim, you’ll find three packages to choose from. The first one is the Chrome Package ($1,245, chrome-clad aluminum-alloy wheels, chrome-finished front grille, chrome exhaust finisher, metallic kick plates). The second package is the Texas Titan Edition, which builds on the first package ($1,295, exterior Texas Titan edition badging, carpeted floor mats with Texas Titan edition logo, metallic kick plates). The third package is the Midnight edition ($1,250), which adds black-trimmed highlights — fog lights with light surround, front bumper, alloy wheels, door handles, mirrors, badging.

On the top trim is the Platinum Reserve Utility Package ($750, Titan boxes, electronic tailgate lock, rear bumper step assist). There are no other packages available with this well-equipped model.

Titan XD Driving Impressions

My test Titan XD PRO-4X model came with the turbo-diesel engine and managed well on the road. On cold mornings, the diesel took a bit more time to kick in, following a long pause after I pressed the ignition button.

It is easy to forget about the delay, a necessary interlude which allows the ceramic glow plug system to heat the engine. The best way to meet this challenge is by pushing the ignition button twice (keep your foot off the accelerator), allow the glow plug to do its thing.

2019 Nissan Titan XDNext, push the ignition switch with your foot on the pedal and the Titan XD should come to life. Cummins says the system “…significantly reduces start time and electrical current draw, reducing vehicle charging system requirements.” The plugs are designed to last the life of the engine and require no maintenance. If you live where frigid temperatures prevail, then investing in a block heater is a sensible approach.

Like other large pickup trucks, the Titan XD offers a commanding presence on the road. It isn’t especially fast, at least not in diesel form, with modest at best step-off acceleration. Under full throttle, the diesel proves its might, as it supplies robust passing power. I’ve towed with the Titan XD previously and know of its capabilities. The Cummins engine simply expands that capability accordingly.

As for off-roading, we were restricted by where we could go. Winter rains this year were plentiful, which means the usual places were flooded and off limits. Federal lands, including the Uwharrie National Forest in the center of North Carolina, is an ideal place to go off-roading, with it eight marked trails of varying difficulty available. Alas, these trails are shut during the winter season.

A few of the local right-of-ways are also no longer accessible, but there are a handful of gravel and unpaved roads for testing in my area. I headed to two such places, then switched the drive dial to 4High and marched through puddles, sailed across gravel, and conquered muddy terrain. The Titan XD acquitted itself, with its weight and girth supplying an advantage in the open areas I navigated. That said, I wondered how well it would perform on narrow and loose terrain. But then I remembered an earlier evaluation of this model and when a clay goo could not stop it, thanks to 4Low and a locking rear differential.

Auto Trends Recommends

Fierce competition means Nissan has its work cut out for itself in the full-size truck arena. The Titan and Titan XD are ideal for Nissan Frontier owners desiring an upgrade, as they build on the success of its junior partner.

Nabbing conquest buyers is the bigger challenge and that’s where Nissan struggles. All three domestic manufacturers offer more powertrain choices, although the available V6 turbo-diesel engines displace just three liters and fall short of the Nissan’s towing capabilities. The domestic diesels emphasize efficiency, while the Cummins is all about payload and towing.

Thus, if you are full-size pickup truck shopper and plan to keep your vehicle for the long haul, the Cummins option is the way to go. Then shop with the cab and drivetrain choice you want to forge your best deal.

Ram Chassis Cab is Here and Brings With it Class-Leading Numbers

Ram pickup trucks are tearing up the market, thanks in part to an all-new model that’s “bringing it” to the segment. That model is none other than the Ram 1500, which is the brand’s standard full-size truck.

But the 1500 is also joined by a pair of heavy-duty models, the 2500 and 3500. These two vehicles help Ram claim the highest performance, payload and towing numbers in the business.

Ahead of the Chicago Auto Show this week, we began to hear rumblings of something new from Ram. One rumor was quickly confirmed — an available 60/40 split tailgate, giving Ram a viable option to GMC’s “trick” gate.

All-New Ram Chassis Cab

Fortunately, Ram isn’t stopping there. Fiat Chrysler’s truck brand announced that it is releasing all-new chassis cab models. These updated trucks (3500, 4500, and 5500) come with a Cummins 6.7-liter turbo-diesel six-cylinder engine with an output of 360 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque. Buyers can also select a 6.4-liter gasoline V8 engine. Both engines work with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Yes, these diesel performance numbers are lower than what the standard Ram 3500 delivers, but that’s okay — the real proof of what the new chassis cab does is in another set of numbers.

And those numbers put Ram Commercial at the top of the segment as this pickup truck has a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 43,000 pounds. Moreover, the new Ram supplies 35,200 pounds of towing and a payload capacity of 12,510 pounds. Thus, Ram can claim top numbers ahead of its competitors: Ford and Chevrolet/GMC.

Upfit and Outfit

At the press conference announcing the new models, a Ram spokesman noted the new trucks may be outfitted to serve in a variety of ways. As such, Ram displayed models that included a bucket truck, a crew cab with a horse trailer, and other work vehicles. The spokesman also suggested the chassis cab could be converted into an ambulance and that’s something we don’t usually see from Ram.

The new chassis cab is stronger and lighter than before thanks to the truck maker utilizing 97-percent high-strength steel frames. Thus, torsional rigidity is up, while weight is down — by approximately 120 pounds.

Tech and Style Highlights

Ram equips the chassis cab with UConnect 4C with a 12-inch display. The package includes the latest audio entertainment with SiriusXM with 360L. Other updates include a “reimagined” center console with a functional workspace featuring more than a dozen different storage layouts. It also has a wider docking area for optional wireless charging and has three USB ports (with two more in the rear).

A pair of available 115-volt three-prong plugs is designed to handle up to 400 watts for charging electronic devices or power tools. Moreover, folding up the rear bench seat reveals an additional contained storage space with under-seat compartments.

Four different grille styles accompany the 2019 Ram Chassis Cab, with not a crosshairs look to be found. The new bumper has larger openings, which supply greater airflow to the turbo intercooler. Ram also integrated proximity sensors to make them less obvious. You’ll find three headlamp variations, including an adaptive front lighting system. Finally, a new shark antenna handles radio, Wi-Fi, navigation and SiriusXM 360L.

Ram continues to chalk up big gains and that’s a reflection of an automaker anticipating customer needs. Despite all the superlatives gushed at the news conference (e.g., massive, big, best-in-class, powerful) Ram appears to put up with those claims. That’s another salvo fired across the bow of both Ford and GM.

Chevrolet just raised the bar in the midsize performance pickup truck category by introducing its latest model, the Colorado ZR2 Bison. The Bison builds on the off-road-ready ZR2 thanks to a collaboration Chevrolet has with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), a premium off-road aftermarket manufacturer.

The new model goes on sale in January 2019. Here’s what you need to know about this tricked-out Chevy.

1. Five Underbody Skid Plates

2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 BisonIf you’re a serious off-roader, then you know your pickup truck needs protection. Jagged terrain can puncture a gas tank or destroy expensive moving parts.

The ZR2 Bison gets five underbody skid plates, which is more than the usual three or four typically offered.

The skid plates cover the fuel tank, the engine oil pan, the transfer case and both the front and rear locking differentials. AEV designed the plates, which are made of hard, durable hot-stamped Boron steel. The steel not only protects, but it adds minimal weight.

2. Additional Reinforcing Steel

The ZR2 Bison benefits from reinforcing stamped steel for the front and rear bumpers. The idea here is to provide an additional measure of protection for drivers as they climb obstacles.

3. Lettering and Decal Changes

You’d expect Chevrolet to make the ZR2 Bison stand out in other ways, right? Well, you won’t be disappointed.

It begins with the unique flow-through “CHEVROLET” lettered grille, which replaces the expected bow-tie insignia. It is a look competing manufacturers have successfully employed (Ford and Toyota, for instance) and something customers seem to appreciate.

Other decorative changes include special “Bison” decals on the bed sides along with an “AEV Bison” logo on the tailgate. Inside, AEV logo floor liners and front head restraints complete the look.

Building on the Best

Go with the Bison and you’re building on the many attributes of the ZR2, including the unique front and rear locking differentials, which no competing model offers. Special Multimatic DSSV dampers are also unique to the segment.

The ZR2 models come with off-road rocker protection, cast-iron control arms and an Autotrac transfer case. Both models have a modified 3.42 ratio rear axle along with front and rear tracks widened by 3.5 inches and a suspension lifted by 2 inches over a Colorado Z71. These models ride on 31-inch tires.

Chevrolet will offer the ZR2 Bison in both extended- and crew-cab configurations. The truck is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine or customers may upgrade to the 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine. Available equipment includes an accessory snorkel, which enhances air filtration on dusty trails.

ZR2 Bison: Looking Ahead

Chevrolet hasn’t shared pricing information yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the ZR2 Bison ends up costing at least $45,000. Choose the diesel engine and your final cost might push $50,000. That’s likely in the same territory that a future Ford Ranger Raptor model would cost, based on Ford’s midsize truck, which is also debuting this January.

If you’re shopping for a highly capable luxury sport utility vehicle, the 2018 Land Rover Discovery is certainly worth a look. This medium-to-large SUV offers strong engine choices and pairs them with an eight-speed automatic transmission. However, your cost can quickly climb, while smartphone compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is non-existent.

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery returns virtually unchanged from last year when the current model rolled out. The latest Discovery offers a fresh interpretation on a classic model.

2018 Land Rover Discovery Overview

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery is offered in three trims: SE ($52,090), HSE ($58,490) and HSE Luxury ($65,490). Add $995 for the destination charge. Add another $2,000 for the turbo-diesel engine.

Land Rover says the Discovery seats 5 + 2, an acknowledgment that the available third-row seat is best used as a jump seat. That seat does, however, accommodate adults, but with one important qualifier: short distance travel is just okay. Beyond that, save the seat for the youngsters, but only when needed.

The standard equipment list is robust as it includes such items as automatic halogen headlights, power-folding and heated side mirrors with approach lights, 19-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate and rear fog lamps. Inside, the Discovery SE comes with a tilt steering column, dual-zone climate control, a 10-speaker audio system, Bluetooth and a 10-inch touchscreen display. Grained leather seats and power-controlled front seats are also standard.

Move up to the HSE trim (my test model) and this one adds LED lights, front recovery hooks, garnishment improvements and an electric sunroof. Inside, the HSE has a power-adjustable steering column, upgraded wood trim, a 10-speaker Meridian audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, an interactive driver display and additional USB ports (second row).

The HSE Luxury adds heated windshield washer jets and front fog lights. Inside, the equipment roster includes ambient lighting, power-controlled third-row seats, Windsor leather, heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel.

Choose Your Engine

Manufacturers typically have an assortment of engines and transmissions available when designing a new vehicle. The pair forms a vehicle’s powertrain, delivering what many hope is the right combination of performance, fuel efficiency, reduced emissions and in the case of Land Rover, pulling power.

Happily, the choices for Discovery shoppers are quite good. The standard engine is a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine with 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. It is used in a variety of applications across the Jaguar Land Rover universe with modest increases in horsepower, torque or both evident in some models. Land Rover pairs this engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The second engine is a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 with 254 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. It also works alongside an eight-speed automatic transmission. There are a few things worth noting about this engine, beginning with its quietness. Indeed, I didn’t look at the supplied documentation before getting behind the wheel of the Discovery and only discovered it was powered by a diesel once I began my driving. Yes, it is that quiet.

The diesel also has ample low-end grunt and supplies a 5 mpg fuel economy advantage over the gas burner. Certainly, the upgrade will cost you more upfront, but the advantages in power, towing, fuel efficiency and maintenance outweigh the cost, especially if you plan to keep your Discovery for many years.

The Discovery along with the BMW X5 are the only models in the segment still offering diesels. Competitors such as the Lexus GX, Audi Q7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class do not. If you’re concerned about higher diesel prices you should know that each of these models require premium gasoline, which costs nearly the same as diesel fuel.

Land Rover long ago discovered the confluence of on-road comfort and off-road prowess. It has only gotten better in both departments since the new models arrived on the scene over these past few years.

Each vehicle is quiet, rides very comfortably and looks great around town. Pull up to any venue and your Land Rover gets noticed.

But it is this model’s off-road chops that many buyers may not fully appreciate. Indeed, most will simply not go off-road, although the capabilities are most definitely there.

The current model utilizes unibody construction, which isn’t always appreciated for its off-road capabilities. However, manufacturers such as Jeep (Grand Cherokee) have found that they can build a unibody model that looks great around town while taking it to the off-road less traveled. In brief, unibody construction ensures improved body rigidity and handling over traditional body-on-frame SUVs.

The key beyond body build is, of course, four-wheel drive. In this case, Land Rover has such a system in place, including a low-range transfer case. The standard suspension system features a traditional coil-spring arrangement.

Typically, though, Land Rover supplies an air suspension system for our review. Here, the system adds 1.7 inches of lift to the Discovery’s noteworthy 11 inches of ground clearance. All told this enhanced SUV gains improved approach, breakover and departure angles, along with improved wading depth. You’ll opt for this system if you’re serious about off-roading.

Taking the Discovery off-road means utilizing its Terrain Response dial to tackle the kind of obstacle you’ll be facing. This computer-controlled system adjusts the height, the center differential lock and optional rear locker, manages throttle control intervention and adjusts throttle response. Keep an eye on the instrument panel as it renders cool scientific-like graphs to go with these changes.

Let’s Examine Technology

In our earlier overview, we looked at some of the tech features offered by Land Rover in the 2018 Discovery. No doubt, you’ll find a nice selection of audio systems, including Meridian.

2018 Land Rover DiscoveryWe like that Land Rover is also up on nearly everything else, including Bluetooth, USB ports and its own InControl infotainment system.

Naturally, the one void that gets noticed is Land Rover’s lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Neither is available as Land Rover’s focus is on its own InControl suite. JLR isn’t alone in not offering either system with any of its models. Mazda, Toyota and Lexus are also holdouts. One reason we’ve heard about the lack of smartphone compatibility has to do with maintaining proprietary information. If the automaker believes a third party might access confidential information about drivers or their technology, then that hesitancy is understood.

As for Land Rover, you can still use their navigation system to get you places. The InControl interface is fairly easy to use. The standard “Touch” system features an 8-inch touch-screen with intuitive touch and swiper controls. Opt for Touch Pro and the 10-inch touchscreen allows pinch-to-zoom gestures, which are ideal for controlling maps, media and settings. Voice recognition is added to this level as well. Some models include Touch Pro Duo, which brings in a second screen for controlling multiple features together.

Parting Thoughts: 2018 Land Rover Discovery

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery brings luxury, style and performance to the segment, and adds an element of off-road prowess that sets it apart from the competition. Most Land Rover buyers won’t be taking their SUVs off-roading, however. But if having that feature available if and when you need it is important to you, then it is hard to beat the Discovery at its game.

Jeep Wrangler: There’s Only One

The fourth-generation Jeep Wrangler is a worthy successor to the original.

How do you update one of the most iconic models from one of the most recognized automotive brands in the world? If you are Jeep, you do so with extreme caution. After all, you risk tampering with a product that essentially sells itself.

That product is none other than the Jeep Wrangler, the spiritual successor to the General Purpose U.S. Army “Jeep” widely used throughout the European and Pacific Theaters of World War Two. Neither sand, mud, hills or debris were obstacles powerful enough to stop these indomitable off-road vehicles.

When the war ended, returning servicemen purchased the surplus stock, individuals who had first-hand experience with them. Civilian versions of the Jeep were then designed and a star was born.

Fast forward to today and the Jeep brand is now widely available in markets well beyond the U.S. and Canada. Indeed, with the formation of Fiat Chrysler, the Jeep brand has expanded to include more models as well as countries served than before. War footage may serve as the best indicator of Jeep prowess, enabling the company to reach consumers in new markets with relative ease.

A Tale of Two Jeeps: 2018 Wrangler (JK & JL)

2018 Jeep Wrangler RubiconThe Jeep Wrangler name rolled out in 1986 when then-owner the American Motors Company replaced the previous CJ with a new model. The change marked a clear departure away from war-derived models to a modern canvas outfitted with structural improvements undertaken to meet stiffer safety requirements.

The Wrangler itself is now in its fourth generation, with the new model rolling out for the 2018 model year. Although for 2018, Jeep had been producing both third- (JK) and fourth-generation (JL) models, enabling the automaker to ramp up production of the new one as it ended the old.

Jeep started JL production late last year and ended JK production in April, so if you want the latest model, you need to ask for it. Slight changes in design make it easy to tell the two apart. You can also reference a placard affixed to the inside rear door as it will identify which two-letter designation applies.

Before we look at the JL at hand, here is what you need to know about the latest model. For starters, the new Wrangler has a base price of $27,495 or $3,750 more than the previous one. The difference is quite striking — 11.5 percent more — and much higher than what we would expect. The prices mentioned here include a $750 increase on the new model since it came out for all two- and four-door (Wrangler Unlimited) models.

Jeep offers three trims for the two-door Wrangler: Sport ($28,940), Sport S ($32,140) and Rubicon ($38,940). Choose the four-door Wrangler Unlimited and the prices are as follows: Sport ($32,440), Sport S ($35,640), Sahara ($38,940) and Rubicon ($38,940). Prices reflect a $1,445 destination charge.

Charting the Changes

At first glance, the untrained eye may have a difficult time spotting the changes between JK and JL Jeep Wrangler models. Happily, Jeep did not mess with the overall look by abandoning its traditional layout, sharp edges, strong shoulders and powerful stance.

Just imagine if the Jeep acquired contemporary fluidic crossover lines — the hue and cry from the faithful would have been enormous. Never mind the sound of heads rolling around on the floor at corporate headquarters….

The following are the important changes and highlights of the New Wrangler, Jeep’s internal name for the new model:

1. Discreet exterior changes.

2018 Jeep Wrangler RubiconThe new Wrangler features a widened track and updated fender flares with available LED lights. The timeless seven-slot vertical grille layout continues. This time the now larger headlamps press into the exterior slots. The side-hinged tailgate design continues.

Standard equipment includes halogen headlamps, fog lamps, tow hooks, skid plates and 17-inch steel wheels. Upgrades bring in LED reflector headlamps, rock rails, power-heated side mirrors, a modular hardtop, all-terrain tires and an upgraded soft top roof.

2. Expanded powertrain choices.

The venerable 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 returns as the base engine with the new Wrangler. Jeep pairs it with a standard six-speed manual gearbox or a newly available eight-speed automatic.

This year, Jeep adds an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. The interesting thing here is that the performance numbers are not that different from the standard engine. Indeed, the V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while the turbo delivers 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Unlike the base engine, this one comes with the automatic transmission only.

Next year, a third engine choice arrives: a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6, generating 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. It also comes with the automatic transmission. We omitted mention of the diesel in the specifications because it arrives in the JL’s second model year.

3. A vastly improved interior.

One of the complaints with the previous model was the overpowering dash assembly. Somehow, it just did not look or feel right in this SUV. This time, you will find a more subdued face and a lowered one too, matching the dropped down beltline. The cabin feels more open, which is especially helpful for anyone who tends to feel claustrophobic in tight quarters.

Mounted high is the controls. As you move your eyes down the center console you will find everything neatly labeled. It tends to get a bit busy there too— take note of the automatic window controls as they are placed in the middle of the console. Odd, yes.

The rear seat is about as snug as ever. It is most useful for children, although young adults will gleefully fit, especially when the roof is off and the doors removed. Certainly, this arrangement makes for a great way to cruise the strip!

Standard equipment remains thin with air conditioning worked in as an option on the base model. Cloth seats, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column and a washout interior come standard. Options include power windows and door locks, upgraded cloth or leather seats, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats. If you are looking for the premium features found in today’s SUVs, the Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee may be the better choice.

4. Technology and safety considerations.

You will also find a media hub with a USB port and an auxiliary port, a second USB port in the center console and SiriusXM traffic. Also available are 5-, 7- and 8.4-inch color displays, satellite radio, a 9-speaker audio system, a 115-volt power outlet and a navigation system.

Among safety matters, the Wrangler has a standard rearview camera. Options include hill-descent control, blind-spot monitoring and rear park assist. You will not find such features as adaptive cruise control or emergency braking. Expect future models to offer such a package.

Taking to the Road or Off

Jeep supplied me with a Wrangler Rubicon with the base engine paired with the manual transmission. I cannot recall the last time I had a four-wheel-drive model with a stick shift. I remember riding in one, but I cannot say for certain that I have ever driven one.

Well, the Wrangler with a stick gets the job done. The transmission does not shift as smoothly as a sports car (as expected) and clutch uptake can take some getting used to. What is cool is that both the transmission and drivetrain controls are stick operated. That is something I like and different from the usual knobs and switches most four-wheel-drive systems have.

2018 Jeep Wrangler RubiconI drove the Wrangler more than 100 miles on the highway one day to attend a Cars and Coffee event in another city. The ride is not especially comfortable, but it was not jarring either. Steering is wobbly — part of the blame rests with the all-terrain tires. Still, this Jeep is best explored beginning on soft or gravel roads, then on mud sloughs and hills.

You can leave the Wrangler in two-wheel drive much of the time, but you will want to switch to 4H for better footing. The Wrangler acquits itself on uneven surfaces and goes where other models fear to tread. In the one area where mud filled the tracks, 4L came in handy. Carefully work your way through and the mud splatters everywhere, offering proof to all of a fun time had.

Improvements this year include new Dana axles and a Selec-Trac full-time two-speed transfer case. These go with the front- and rear-axle lockers and a limited-slip differential. Both four-wheel-drive systems supply full-time torque management and superior grip in low-traction situations.

Parting Thoughts: 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL)

Based in part on what others have told me about the Wrangler, along with my personal experience with one, the new model is everything we expect, with perhaps a few surprises in the mix. These surprises include the expanded engine choices — I cannot comment on either, other than to say the turbo-diesel is also available in the Ram 1500, where the added pulling power and improved fuel efficiency are among its best attributes.

If there is one concern (or surprise) I have about the Wrangler JL is its significant price increase. Most people just will not opt for the base model as it is thinly equipped. So, you must start at the Sport and work your way up from there. Choose a Wrangler Unlimited and your price point pushes near $40,000. That may not be a lot of cash for established consumers, but for people entering the game, many compromises are in order. Yes, Jeep also affordable models, but then they are not anything like the Wrangler.

All in all, the Jeep mystique continues as best wrapped in a Wrangler or Wrangler Unlimited. With a pickup truck on the way and reports of new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models persisting, Jeep along with Ram should continue to provide the profit drivers for Fiat Chrysler.

Sporty and Elegant: Mazda CX-5

The CX-5 supplies a powerful presence among small SUVs.

Mazda may be a small player in the automotive sphere, but not one model fails to garner the attention it deserves. Credit goes to Mazda designers for delivering a fetching design across its entire model line.

That model line now includes three cars (Mazda3, Mazda6 and MX-5 Miata) and three utility vehicles (CX-3, CX-5 and CX-9). Every model comes with a four-cylinder engine; Mazda offers nothing smaller or larger. No electric cars, no hybrids and no diesels (at least not yet).

2018 Mazda CX-5 Overview

My most recent Mazda model was none other than its compact CX-5 utility vehicle. This one comes in three trims: Sport ($24,150), Touring ($26,215) and Grand Touring ($29,645). Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is available. Add $1,300 for all-wheel drive and another $975 for the destination fee.

Mazda introduced the CX-5 in 2013, replacing the previous Tribute. At that time, the new SUV represented a fresh break for Mazda, which previously shared its compact SUV platform with the Ford Escape (and the earlier Mercury Mariner). In 2017, the second-generation model rolled out, retaining the basic footprint of the original, while delivering a new nose and updated equipment.

For 2018, Mazda drops the Grand Select trim. Its lone engine now features cylinder deactivation technology for a slight boost in fuel economy. The standard features list now includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel along with blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Exterior Highlights

Is it a raised hatchback or an SUV? No, the CX-5 doesn’t confuse with its design aspiration, at least not entirely. Mazda designers essentially applied the beautiful curves, sharp edges and gaping grille of its car models to this SUV. It looks great and offers proof that a crossover can be beautiful.

Standard features include LED lights, 17-inch alloy wheels and a roofline spoiler. Among the list of options you will find automatic leveling headlights, LED fog lights, heated side mirrors, 19-inch alloy wheels, a power-sliding moonroof and a power rear liftgate.

Interior Highlights

Do you want a roomy interior? The 2018 CX-5 does not disappoint. It is most comfortable for four, but you can fit five in a pinch. Its standard cargo space comes in slightly below competitors such as the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape at 30.9 cubic feet or 59.6 cubic feet with the second-row seat folded.

The CX-5’s front seats are comfortable, supportive and look extra special when wrapped in leather. The cabin is fairly quiet, although at highway speeds some wind noise intrudes. The climate control system on my Grand Touring tester worked quite well. The heated seats and heated steering wheel were also useful and most welcome on chilly mornings. The CX-5 doesn’t match the storage compartments of the top models, although I appreciated the large open storage compartment at the base of the center console.

Standard features include power windows, power door locks, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and cloth seats. Available features include imitation or real leather seats, power front seats with driver lumbar support, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, heated outboard rear seats and dual-zone climate control.

Safety & Technology Features

Kudos to Mazda for delivering a model that is a 2018 Top Safety Pick award recipient from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The IIHS gave the CX-5 top marks in every crashworthiness category and also recognized this Mazda for its front crash prevention technology.

Speaking of safety technology, the 2018 CX-5 comes with blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a rearview camera and brake support. Shoppers may also opt for Mazda’s I-Activsense Package with high beam control, lane departure warning with lane-keep assist, radar cruise control with stop and go, and brake support. The top-trim model also offers something called Active Driving Display with Traffic Sign Recognition.

Mazda equips the Sport model with a four-speaker audio system, supplies six speakers with the Touring edition and blesses the top-of-the-line Grand Touring edition with a 10-speaker Centerpoint audio system. Bluetooth, an auxiliary audio input jack and two USB ports come standard. Mazda also includes a 7-inch color display, HD Radio and Aha, Pandora and Stitcher radio integration.

Beginning on the Touring level, you’ll find a pair of rear USB ports. HomeLink and a trial satellite radio subscription accompany the Grand Touring model. All models comes with keyless entry and push-button start. Navigation is extra. Sorry, Mazda doesn’t supply Android Auto or Apple CarPlay integration. At least not yet.

On the Road: 2018 Mazda CX-5

Who knew a small SUV could be so fun? I found myself almost forgetting that I was behind the wheel of a utility vehicle whenever I drove the CX-5. This model comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, generating 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. Mazda pairs this engine with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Step-off acceleration is not super fast, but it is no laggard either. This SUV picks up speed steadily and the transmission complies with its smooth shifting. Under hard acceleration, the transmission doesn’t hunt for gears — that’s the kind of drama you don’t want in any vehicle.

This SUV’s chassis features sporty car tuning, enabling it to carve corners or at least come close to doing so. Engaged steering and firm brakes are two of its top attributes. We found the ride comfortable, but the engine is noisy under full throttle. I like how the CX-5 handles better than our leased Toyota RAV4. Yes, I said it.

The CX-5’s fuel economy is competitive, coming in at 25 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive. Those numbers drop by 1 mpg each with all-wheel drive. When properly equipped, this SUV has a tow rating of up to 2,000 pounds.

One important footnote to add: a second engine, this one a turbo-diesel, will also join the CX-5 engine family. Expected to arrive last fall, it has yet to appear. Figure that Mazda is working diligently to garner the approval of the EPA and CARB, before its official debut.

Parting Thoughts: Mazda CX-5

The 2018 CX-5 demonstrates Mazda has what it takes, delivering a level of sportiness not common to the segment. Notwithstanding its smaller than average storage compartment, the CX-5 acquits itself by delivering a premium and sporty offering in the top-trim Grand Touring edition.

Perhaps your most significant dilemma is where to start your search. I believe the Touring edition delivers what most people want. Opt for the Preferred Equipment Package ($1,250, Bose 10-speaker audio system, navigation, power moonroof, power liftgate and HomeLink) and you’ll come away with a well-equipped front-wheel drive model for under $29,000.

Of course, all this is before you strike your best deal, as discounts and other special deals await.
