Revived Lincoln Aviator Set to Take Flight

The Lincoln Aviator is back, an all-new SUV set to take flight next year. Notwithstanding the obvious aviation references, the 2019 Aviator may very well enable the Lincoln brand to recapture at least some of its past glory, particularly as the preeminent American luxury automotive brand.

The 2019 Aviator was presented at a media conference at the New York International Auto Show this week. It joins the bigly Navigator and the soon-to-be-renamed two-row MKX (Nautilus as of 2019). The compact MKC starts things off for Ford’s luxury brand.

As for the MKT, the wagon-like outlier of the utility vehicle bunch, we don’t see its ongoing usefulness to the brand. Perhaps it will soldier on in a livery capacity for another year or two — gosh, don’t they make nice funeral cars?

The 2019 Aviator sits on a rear-wheel drive platform with available all-wheel drive, but is based on unique architecture that is not related to the similar-sized Ford Explorer. Indeed, the Explorer comes with standard front-wheel drive.

Unlike the body-on-frame Navigator, the Aviator is unibody — just like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Land Rover Range Rover.

The canvas features clear-cut Lincoln touches, beginning with the mesh grille now commonly used on other Lincoln models. Signature LED lights and a narrow lower grille are other upfront features.

Take note of the nose ridge on the hood, then allow your eyes to scan the profile. A high beltline underscores this SUV’s powerful stance.

Body sculpting and a character line that runs through the door handles adds visual interest. The roofline gently slopes to the rear, which is marked by wraparound tail lamps with a connecting light bar.

Upscale, Tech-Oriented Cabin

Inside, you’ll find a spacious cabin with seating for seven. The Lincoln press release uses beautiful flowing prose to describe that space, but it probably means little to you if you haven’t seen it.

Breaking it down into decipherable language, you’ll find such features as available 30-way power front seats with massage capability, aluminum trim and leather-trimmed seats.

Tech features include a 12-inch color display, wireless phone charging inside the front armrest, WiFi connectivity and power outlets throughout the cabin.

Lincoln will also offer its “Phone as Key” technology where drivers will be able to start their SUV with their smartphone.

Powertrain Choices

Lincoln hasn’t revealed the engine slated to power the Aviator. We do know that it will be a twin-turbo, likely a V6 displacing at 2.7-, 3.0 or 3.5 liters.

The middle engine is a Lincoln exclusive and is our pick if we were to choose one of the three.

A 10-speed automatic seems likely as well. We expect Lincoln to offer multiple drive modes and you’ll also see the now familiar piano key transmission controller.

Not only will the Aviator receive dual boosting power, but it will offer a plug-in hybrid variant similar to the one showcased in New York (and pictured here from the rear).

When added to the standard twin-turbo gas engine, we’re likely to see impressive performance numbers. Lincoln, however, hasn’t shared those details nor has it hinted at its range.

Reaching Higher

The Lincoln Aviator is designed to fill a gap in the Ford utility vehicle segment.

It is also expected to drive sales, helping Lincoln achieve its goal of 300,000 annual global units by 2020. A significant portion of those sales will be in China with the United States and Canada contributing the balance.

Lastly, there is always a chance the model will be the 2020 Aviator, given its 2019 release. No matter, this SUV’s arrival will be a welcome addition to dealer fleets.

Certain dreams of mine were recently fulfilled when a handsome, shiny BMW 7 Series arrived at my home one blustery March afternoon. The new conveyance completed my quest to drive each of BMW’s numbered car models ranging from 3 to 7. Yes, “2” remains unfulfilled, but if there is some prioritizing in the BMW numbering order, then the “7” wins by five.

But the received model wasn’t one of the anticipated 7 Series trims powered by inline-six, V8 or V12 engines. Instead, it was a new model with a twin-turbo inline-four cylinder engine and an AC synchronous electric motor with integrated power.

That integration covers the vehicle’s electronics, the charger and generator mode for recuperation. In other words, it works in tandem with the gas engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission to power this plug-in electric hybrid vehicle on its own or in conjunction with the rest of the powertrain.

I think I just said a mouthful.

Make no mistake about it: the 740e xDrive iPerformance is its own take on the much-heralded 7 Series. For the series familiar, you may wonder if the new model is reductive from a power standpoint. In some ways it is, although I’m certain BMW wants us to view it as something the automaker developed in an effort to strike out in a new direction.

To that end, we’ll examine the highlights of this full-size, luxury all-wheel drive sedan with room for five.

1. Every Bit a 7 Series.

Rest assured, the 740e is very much a 7 Series sedan. The “740” moniker tells you that it is a base model, with 750 and 760 following. The “e” says it is electrified, in this case you’ll find a PHEV, not a pure electric vehicle. This means the sedan runs on battery power exclusively when charged or taps the gas engine much of the time.

Apart from the powertrain and its overall driving characteristics, everything about the 740e is familiar, even praiseworthy. There is something about the 7 Series sheet metal that puts a smile on my face. As if the ultimate in BMW design has arrived. And it has.

The familiar twin-kidney grille is wholly in proportion to the front fascia, neither itself overwhelming nor overtaken by the beautiful headlamps. Its frontal presentation is amplified by the lovely sculpted lower grille opening and the elegant lines running from the front to the back of the hood.

Firm shoulders, a high waistline and a long roofline impart the “bigness” of this model. The rear deck is almost as short as the hood is long. The rear fascia is marked by large, but tasteful wraparound tail lamps, a trunk lip spoiler and dual exhaust ports. The telling feature that this model is a hybrid is the charging port situated just ahead of the driver’s door between the wheel well and the hood.

The overall look of this sedan’s visage is unmitigated elegance, with its ornamentation somewhere just above minimalist.

2. Cavernous, Luxuriant Interior

With 10.5-feet between the wheels, the BMW 7 Series delivers an exceptionally spacious cabin. There is room for five with rear seat legroom the best you’ll find in this class.

2018 BMW 740eIn some ways the best seats are in the rear, especially for outboard seated passengers with the middle armrest folded down. Indeed, with the available executive lounge seat option, your recliner chair dreams come true.

Similar to the exterior, the interior finds a happy balance between minimalism and an overwrought design. Yes, all the important controls and features are at the ready, but the look is orderly and uncluttered.

Leather is used liberally throughout the cabin, with soothing colors. Wood trim, metal accents and carbon fiber are subtle touches found throughout.

Tech features are in abundance and include a 10.2-inch color display with gesture control, an even larger instrument panel display and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon auto system. Look up and you’ll find a dual-panel sunroof…activate a switch and the trunk rises.

The trunk space measures just under 15 cubic feet, which is below average for this class. Two quick tugs on a lever and the hood disengages, then easily lifts once your hand slips underneath.

3. Electric or Not.

The most difficult number to wrap my head around was the 14-mile all-electric range this big sedan provides. That range is considerably less than some models out there, with the Mini Cooper SE Countryman ALL4 coming in at just 12 miles. Mini, by the way, is a BMW brand.

So, this means that when tapping the typical public charging station, drivers can expect a full charge in about 2.5 hours. Then, when operating the 740e in “Max eDrive” mode, the sedan behaves like an electric vehicle — the internal combustion engine stays off, except under hard acceleration.

That said, you may find operating the sedan in “AUTO eDrive” mode the best choice as the system activates the engine when needed. What’s interesting about this mode is you can sense the transition between the two power sources as the engine will immediately kick in when additional power is needed.

Choose the “battery control” mode if you wish to save electric power for later or if you want to charge the battery as you drive. This mode may be the best among the three as under certain driving conditions, it can send power to the 9.2 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack chiefly by means of regenerative braking. Take a long trip and you may find the battery replenished when you arrive, with no need to connect to a power source. Then, drive around town for a few miles without using fuel.

4. Feel the Power.

You say 255 horsepower? In a BMW 7 Series? When I showed the 740e at a local Cars and Coffee event and shared the performance numbers with visitors, their reactions ranged from surprise to disbelief. Indeed, few could wrap their minds around the horsepower number, let alone the fact that just four cylinders were present.

Fortunately, the 255 hp is simply a base number. Helping matters is the additional 111 horsepower from the electric motor. Further, when combined with the gas engine, full power rises to a respectable 322 system horsepower and 369 pound-feet of system torque. Compare that to the 320 horsepower and the 330 pound-feet of torque in the inline-six and you’ll understand why both models have a BMW-announced 0-60 mph time of just 5.1 seconds.

Do you have a need for speed? The 740e delivers, although you should manage your expectations. Certainly, this hybrid isn’t anywhere near as fast as the Tesla Model S and is slightly behind the Volvo S90 T8. For instance, with the Volvo, the gas motor is the same size as the BMW motor. But Volvo uses a supercharger and a turbocharger to provide more power overall. Its all-electric range is 50 percent longer too, coming in at 21 miles. In any case, the Volvo isn’t an accurate competitor as it is sized nearer to the 5 Series, than to the 7 Series.

5. The Range is a Mystery.

I would love to say the BMW 740e’s range will keep you from avoiding fuel pumps for days on end. It won’t. The reality is that its EPA-estimated 27 mpg fuel economy is difficult to attain. Yes, the instrument panel readout said 26.7 mpg, but I found myself heading to the pump sooner than I had expected.

What (or who) was to blame? That would be none other than the sedan’s 12.1-gallon fuel tank, coming in considerably smaller than the 20.6-gallon tank found in other 7 Series models. I understand why the smaller tank was present: to lighten the load for this 4,740-pound sedan and to make room for the battery pack. Either way, the full driving range is just 326.7 miles. That’s far below the 494.4 miles with the 740i.

Mission accomplished. At least my personal quest to drive the 7 Series is over.

I won’t pretend the 740e delivers an experience matching the top 7 Series trims, but it does come close to rivaling the 740i. No doubt, its short all-electric and overall ranges are its main demerits.

Then again, many of its competitors, including Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, have similar short ranges. On the other hand, the Cadillac CT6 has a 31-mile all-electric range and a 15.6-gallon fuel tank. Like the Volvo S90, the CT6 is a midsize luxury sedan. Again, a head-to-head comparison isn’t fair. But there is still room for improvement, something we’re likely to see as the technology matures.

The bottom line concerning the 2018 BMW 740e is that it allows the manufacturer to offer a compliance model in markets where emissions restrictions and fuel economy mandates are the strictest. Not too long ago, a diesel might have provided the better solution along with the superior range these engines afford. But diesels have fallen into disfavor due to cheating issues and aren’t considered by some as the way forward when it comes to all things clean driving.

Cadillac Exclusive: Twin-Turbo V8 Engine

Cadillac made some news this week when it announced the forthcoming 2019 CT6 V-Sport model, a performance variant of its largest sedan. But it wasn’t simply a new trim that caught everyone’s attention, rather an all-new engine, one exclusive to GM’s luxury marque that will power the V-Sport.

The engine is a 4.2-liter twin turbo V8, a long-promised and often-rumored powerplant for this luxury emblem. GM estimates the engine will deliver 550 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, numbers that will challenge BMW M and Mercedes-AMG for supremacy. Cadillac will offer a slightly detuned variant too, delivering a more “modest” 500 horsepower. The new engine will be hand-built at GM’s Performance Build Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky. That same plant also builds the Corvette Z06 engine.

“Cadillac’s performance technology reaches new heights with the new and exclusive 4.2L Twin Turbo V-8,” said Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen. “The engineering prowess embodies the very spirt of Cadillac performance on and off the racetrack.”

Performance Prowess

It is no secret that Cadillac Racing is a formidable force and because of that its engineering has trickled down to Cadillac V-Series and V-Sport models.

The automaker says the new engine is a “clean sheet design,” which means it isn’t the derivative of an existing engine. The brand claims unique design elements in an effort to weigh performance with efficiency. Importantly, the fresh build allows the automaker to achieve the performance goals it had in mind for the CT6 V-Sport.

“It builds on Cadillac’s well-established turbocharging know-how and forges new ground with innovative features that deliver exceptional performance and refinement,” explained Jordan Lee, 4.2L TT V-8 chief engineer.

“Hot V” Configuration

Cadillac says the center of the engine’s design is a “hot V” configuration, one that switches the traditional order of the cylinder heads’ intake and exhaust systems. This arrangement allowed the engineers to place the turbochargers at the top of the engine or in the valley between the heads. The manufacturer claims the layout essentially eliminates turbo lag, while keeping the engine’s overall footprint tight.

The new design enables intake-charged air to enter by means of the lower outside of the heads before exiting through the top inside, where the turbochargers sit within the exhaust manifolds. A quick spool up renders an almost immediate power transfer. Further, the design permits closer mounting of the catalytic converters, yet another contributor to this engine’s smart packaging.

Other features of the new engine are as follows:

  • Twin-scroll turbochargers
  • Electronic wastegate control
  • Twin water-to-air charge coolers
  • Twin throttle bodies
  • Direct injection
  • Dual-independent camshaft phasing
  • Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation)
  • Variable-pressure oiling system
  • Stop/start technology

New Transmission Pairing

Besides the new engine, the Cadillac CT6 V-Sport will benefit from a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

This transmission is prized for it wide gear ratio, which Cadillac claims enhances step-off acceleration. With smaller steps between gears, the transmission aids the engine in maintaining optimum power nearly at all times.

As for the new model, the automaker says that its design inspiration comes from the Escala, a handsome concept car introduced at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California.

This translates into a bold, dark front with a large V-inspired mesh grille along with new horizontal LED headlamps and vertical accents. Also adding to the menacing look are lower aero components and gloss black side window surround trim. The sedan will ride on unique, 20-inch V-Sport wheels set within summer tires developed exclusively for Cadillac.

Other features include a mechanical limited-slip rear differential for improved traction and predictable performance while on the track or when carving corners. A V-Sport specific suspension, a 19-inch Brembo brake system, modified steering and magnetic ride control damper calibrations, and a new exhaust system are among the other performance highlights for this model.

Besides the V-Sport, the 2019 CT6 lineup introduces Cadillac’s “Y” trim strategy for each of its models. Specifically, each model will have Luxury and Sport trims with varying personas and characteristics. For instance, on non-V-Sport CT6 models, new horizontal high-lumen headlights and a revised taillight design rejuvenate the brand’s trademark lighting, drawing inspiration from the Escala Concept.

Grand SUV: Ford Expedition Platinum

Inasmuch as crossovers dominate the SUV segment, traditional models such as the Ford Expedition have an enduring appeal. Quite frankly, there are no other vehicles possessing the passenger carrying capabilities and towing power of full-size SUVs.

The 2018 Ford Expedition launches the fourth generation of this full-size model. It comes in standard and extended wheelbase (Max) versions. Customers have their choice of XLT ($51,470/$54,475); Limited ($62,675/$65,365); and Platinum ($73,030/$75,720) editions. Add $3,010 for four-wheel drive and $1,195 for the destination charge.

Employing a traditional body-on-frame design, the 2018 Expedition is based on the modified platform underpinning the Ford F-150 pickup truck. Many of the changes follow the current-generation F-150 launched in 2015 with its high-strength, aluminum-alloy body and high-strength steel frame. In all, Ford says the new Expedition is 300 pounds lighter than the outgoing model.

A Matter of Style

2018 Ford Expedition PlatinumFord didn’t choose a radical design with the all-new Expedition and that’s a good thing. It has a more elegant visage than the F-150 as the truck advances its masculine rigor. My test Platinum test model builds on this SUV’s handsome frame by including a chrome grille. Additional chrome embellishments cover the mirror caps, roof rails, window surround and rocker panels. The rear offers blacked-out roof pillars, with the backside appearing all the more massive in the extended wheelbase MAX.

Standard equipment includes automatic headlamps, fog lamps, daytime running lights, power operated and heated side mirrors, a roof rack and running boards. Ford also includes 18-inch machined-face aluminum wheels. All four-wheel drive models have front recovery hooks.

There is a long list of upgrades and options available with the 2018 Expedition. You’ll find LED fog lamps, roof rack rails, deployable running boards, LED tail lamps and a power liftgate. Package options add such features as a panoramic vista roof, an off-road package and a trailer tow package.

Roomy, Upscale Cabin

The Ford Expedition seats eight with plush bucket seats up front, second-row tilt and slide seats and a third-row bench seat. The dashboard layout is similar to the F-150’s with a large center console and a two-tier glove box. Open the lower tier and it is further split in half thanks to a shelf. Between the front seats is ample storage, including a deep cargo section.

The available captains chairs reduce the passenger count to seven, but they offer ideal comfort. Your rear seated passengers will appreciate the additional maneuvering room and leg space. If you opt for the Expedition MAX, you’ll notice additional headroom.

The Expedition followed the Lincoln Navigator in my driving rotation. The two are similar, although the interior of the Lincoln is a cut above. That said, the Expedition delivers a beautiful cabin, especially in Platinum guise. Real wood trim, lovely stitching and metallic trim supply this model with the panache you would find in a GMC Yukon/Yukon XL Denali. Figure that Ford had GMC in mind when designing the Platinum.

The equipment roster includes a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, power-adjustable pedals, a power driver’s seat, cloth seats, air conditioning, cargo lights and a cargo management system. Available features include a power-controlled steering column, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated outboard second-row seats. Leather door-trim accents, ambient lighting and cargo organizers are also available.

The 2018 Expedition offers one powertrain combination and a powerful one at that. Here, you’ll find Ford’s second-generation twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine with two power ratings, depending on the trim.

On XLT and Limited models, you’ll have 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Choose the Platinum edition and the performance numbers reach 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Ford pairs this engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The performance numbers are strong, although they don’t match the high output numbers of the Ford F-150 Raptor pickup truck or the Lincoln Navigator SUV. Those two models have 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque to work with, thanks to larger turbos and other enhancements.

As for the model at hand, I had to remind myself several times that it wasn’t a big V8 moving the Expedition, but an even more powerful twin-turbo V6. The turbos spool up quickly and help this SUV move with authority. Only on occasion did I notice the transmission as it moved up and down the gear range — it was that unobtrusive. Otherwise, the engine and transmission make for a happy pairing.

The Expedition shows its off-road chops too. A new off-road package supplies up to seven drive modes with Ford’s Terrain Management System. On my first full day with this SUV, I took it to my favorite off-road haunt with ample amount of ooze, sludge and muck along the way. A 10-foot tall hump was the perfect specimen for testing approach, break over and departure angles — the Expedition conquered it. Everything else that followed was comparatively easy, although I avoided one clay bog and its siren call inviting me to likely disaster.

If you’re planning to tow, the Expedition delivers a 9,300-pound towing capacity (9,100 pounds with the Max). These numbers rival what some pickup trucks deliver.

In the past year, Ford has made some big improvements with its technologies, including its available SYNC 3 interface. Where the previous system was an exercise in frustration, the current one is uncomplicated and easier to use.

The standard audio package includes a nine-speaker system with a CD player and one charging USB port. Move away from the base model and Ford supplies a 12-speaker B&O system, voice-activated navigation and a 110-volt outlet. You’ll also get SYNC telematics, two USB ports, and AppleCarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility. A Connectivity Package is available with the base model and comes with the other trims, bringing in Wi-Fi hotspot capability, a wireless charging pad and two additional USB ports for the third row.

All models come with a rearview camera. Available driver-assist technologies include a 360-degree camera, a blind spot information system, forward sensing warning, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, a lane keeping system and adaptive cruise control. Parting Thoughts: 2018 Ford Expedition

So, which Ford Expedition will you consider? Standard or extended wheelbase? Two- or four-wheel drive? XLT, Limited or Platinum trims? If you’re a current Expedition owner, making the transition could very well begin with the Limited. Choose four-wheel drive if you regularly tow or if you like to head off-road.

The extended wheelbase Max model is ideal for customers who haul a lot of gear. Well equipped, your 2018 Expedition may cost you about $75,000. That seems like a bargain when compared with the Lincoln Navigator I had the week earlier costing just over $100,000.

All in all, the 2018 Ford Expedition does an excellent job in upholding the SUV banner for Ford. Its proven big truck architecture is a plus and the powertrain suits this SUV fine.

If you’re cross-shopping the Expedition, you’ll want to explore the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, the GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, Nissan’s Armada and the Toyota Sequoia. Nissan and Ford have the newest models, but if you want an extended wheelbase SUV, only Ford, Chevrolet and GMC deliver.

Maximum Fun With a Mini Countryman

The Mini Countryman offers an interesting twist on the small SUV frame.

Think “Mini” and words such as tiny, small, and diminutive come to mind. That’s appropriate as the two-door Mini Cooper Hardtop measures just 151.1 inches long.

But Mini is more than just one model, with both the Countryman and the Clubman measuring one-and-a-half feet longer than the smallest model. So, “mini” here is in fact “midi” or perhaps “compact” would be the appropriate nomenclature.

No matter, Mini is a brand and the Countryman and Clubman give Cooper hardtop or convertible owners a reason to hang around instead of fleeing to the competition or, gasp!, moving up to BMW whose parent (BMW Group) owns both brands.

The 2017 Mini Countryman is a new model, then again it isn’t. The original, known as the Austin Mini Countryman, was a 1960s-era conveyance. It was a two-door wagon-like model also marketed as the Morris Mini Traveller.

In 2010, an all-new Mini Countryman rolled out and had a seven-year model run. But the US market never had it.

As for the second-generation Countryman, Mini had the US market in its viewfinder when designing it. Longer and wider than the previous model, the 2017 Countryman made its global debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2016, going on sale stateside a few months later.

Stretching and widening the second-generation Countryman may seem like an odd direction to take, but in this case “necessity is the mother of invention,” a step required to reach North American consumers who find nothing cute about having one’s knees locked in place while riding in the rear seat. Thus, the additional eight inches between axles and a track widened by 3.7 inches means there is ample room for four, even five in a pinch.

In all, there are six Countryman models to consider. Because we’re on the cusp of a new model year, 2018 prices prevail here. Add $850 for the unavoidable destination and handling charge.

The product line starts out with the standard Countryman ($26,600), followed by the Countryman ALL4 ($28,600). Succeeding models include the S Countryman ($31,200) and S Countryman 4ALL ($31,700), with the John Cooper Works Countryman ALL4 capping the product line at $37,800.

That’s five models and I mentioned six. Ah, yes, Mini now has a plug-in version, officially known as the Mini Cooper S E Countryman ALL4. That’s a long name for a PHEV, a model with a base price of $36,800 and introduced for the 2018 model year. Owners may be eligible for up to $4,000 in federal tax credits as well as state and local incentives, where available.

Under the Hood

All “S” models have a 2.0-liter, TwinPower twin-scroll four-cylinder engine. Generating 189 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, that’s the same engine powering the heralded BMW 3 Series. Furthermore, it has a slight power edge over the bimmer, which delivers 180 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox comes standard; an 8-speed automatic transmission is also available.

The standard driver is a 1.5-liter, turbocharged three-cylinder engine with an output of 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The same transmission choices found in the “S” are available here.

Oddly, the PHEV model with both the “S” and “E” designations has the three-cylinder engine. That said, it offers the best performance — 221 combined system horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque. There, you’ll find a six-speed automatic transmission along with all-wheel drive.

A Matter of Style

The Mini Countryman gets its larger size from a modular or transposable platform. This means it can support a variety of vehicles based on its front-wheel-drive platform with available all-wheel drive. Models such as the Chinese-only BMW 1 Series, broader market 2 Series SUVs, and the global BMW X1 share this particular platform, reducing costs, while allowing BMW to bring forth additional models. Notably, the Countryman rides on a platform that isn’t shared with the smallest Minis.

2017 Mini CountrymanWhat’s shared amongst all Mini models is a common canvas or design style. Oval headlights and fog lamps, and a rounded top grille dress the front fascia. Other signature elements include its compressed profile marked by firm shoulders, contrasting wheel wells, available alloy wheels, and a rear haunch. From the rear are vertical combination lamps and rear fog lights. Smoked out roof pillars and dual exhaust tips are other features of note.

Standard equipment includes 15-inch Silver Heli spoke wheels set within all-season tires. Optional wheel designs are many and cover the 16-, 17-, and 18-inch range. All models come with heated side mirrors with washers. Design upgrades bring in a panoramic sunroof ($100), hood stripes, roof rails, spoiler, and chrome line trim.

Inside, you’ll find a cabin with a premium look and feel. My S ALL4 Countryman model came lavishly appointed and seemed as if BMW designers were set loose on the interior. Standard imitation leather seats give way to cloth, leather/cloth, and leather seats elsewhere. Behind the front bucket seats is a 40:20:40 bench seat. Allow me to say this: the deep cut-outs in the back of the front seats make the rear seat quite bearable for two. What about a third individual? In a pinch, one will fit. But why bother?

My loaner had both the leather seats and something I value immensely — front seat extenders. Yes, both the driver and the front passenger can have them — for anyone who spends long times behind the wheel, the extra thigh support offered is terrific as it also relieves stress on the lower spine.

As for the rest of the cabin, you’ll find a “well rounded” look throughout. And I don’t just mean quality, but style as in the instrument panel, center console display, dials, knobs, vents, and door handles. It is a theme common to Mini and amplified inside the Countryman.

Standard interior equipment runs the gamut from keyless entry and push-button start to full power accessories. You’ll also find sliding and reclining rear seats, backrests, and heated seats in all-wheel-drive models.

Package options include Premium — power front seats, upgraded audio system, power tailgate, and privacy glass ($2,000), Convenience — alarm system, folding cargo floor, folding rear center armrest with cup holders, a fold-out picnic cushion or space save tired, and additional 12-volt outlets ($750), and Cold Weather — heated front seats and automatic dimming and power-folding mirrors ($750).

Safety and Technology Features

The 2017 Countryman is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick recipient. This means the Countryman achieved top scores in all five crashworthiness categories. The institute also recognized the Countryman for its available front crash prevention system.

Standard safety equipment includes a rearview camera and rear park distance control. Optional features include front park distance control and parking assistant for parallel parking. The available MINI Driving Assistant ($1,000) brings in collision warning with city braking function, camera-based adaptive cruise control, pedestrian warning with initial brake function, high beam assistant and road sign detection.

The standard 6.5-inch color display includes MINI Connected apps, Bluetooth connectivity, and a six-speaker audio system. Options include a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system and an 8.8-inch touchscreen navigation system with a redesigned user interface and operating system.

Mini Countryman S: The Drive

Alas, my loaner model did not come with a manual gearbox. But, the combination of a TwinTurbo engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission suited me just fine.

Unlike some other turbos, the BMW TwinTurbo with twin scroll behaves as if there are two turbos present, instead of one. Here, this engine gathers engine exhaust from each cylinder bay in alternating sequence before routing to the turbine. The alternating pulses help mitigate turbo lag, the bane of this type of forced-induction engine. There are other factors at work to produce power. Ultimately, you have an engine that behaves like a small V6 and that makes for an amazing amount of power for a small car.

What also helps this model is that it is small and sits relatively close to the ground. That’s an important distinction from other vehicles in this segment — Mini considers the Countryman a crossover utility vehicle. But it is much more like the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack than models such as the Jeep Renegade, Honda HR-V, and Mazda CX-3.

As mentioned earlier, my test model had the driver seat extender. It is a difference maker in luxury models and a huge benefit to such a small vehicle. I found the car rode very well for a compact and the performance was more than adequate…even fun. You get a lot of up front power along with the extra kick you want from the turbo. Handling is firm with decent feedback.

Mini Countryman: Parting Thoughts

The 2017 Countryman successfully carries the Mini theme to a higher level, imbuing this model with the best combination of Mini looks, BMW engineering, and fun-to-drive characteristics. However, price creep can push this small crossover up near $40,000 and at a cost higher than any competitor and in line with some luxury models, including BMW’s own X1.
