FLUIDIC SCULPTURE

About the 2015 Hyundai Elantra

October 31, 2014 by admin 2 Comments

Small Hyundai is big on value.

2014 Hyundai Elantra Limited

Some consumers are understandably shocked when they price a new vehicle. The average cost of a new car today is about $32,000, well beyond the affordability level for not a few shoppers. Still, that figure is just an average as there are cars that are priced well below and well above that number. Small cars, including compact sedans, are where much value can be found.

The compact segment has been getting a lot of attention lately and for several reasons. First, today’s compacts are about the size of midsize sedans that were built at the turn of the millennium. Second, such vehicles typically offer excellent fuel economy, with 40 mpg on the highway and beyond achievable. Third, a well-equipped compact can be had for about $25,000, with base prices starting around $17,000. Many amenities found in larger vehicles, including navigation systems, rear view cameras, premium audio systems and heated seats are available in this segment too.

One of the better values among small cars is the Hyundai Elantra. I recently had a week with a 2014 edition, but instead of concentrating on that model, I thought we’d look at the current 2015 edition. Not that the 2014 model shouldn’t be considered if you buy one before the calendar year runs out — many shoppers want choices and there are far more 2015s available right now.

The Hyundai Elantra is one of the older model names from this Korean manufacturer. First introduced stateside in the early 1990s, the Elantra has gone through several generational changes since. The current iteration was introduced in 2011, so that means we’re coming toward the end of the fifth generation. Happily for new car shoppers, the current Elantra is still very relevant and should be considered if you’re shopping for a new car.

Fluidic Sculpture Design Language

There is something very familiar with the Elantra and that would be its “fluidic sculpture” outline, Hyundai’s current design language. The Sonata was the first model to introduce the look and nearly every Hyundai vehicle since has followed.

Some, including the Sonata and Genesis, have gone on to an updated version of the design, what brings in a distinctive fascia, strong profile lines, a sweeping roof line and a stylish rear deck. It makes for a higher end look, countering the traditional utilitarian manner this segment has long been known for. The Elantra comes equipped with standard 15-inch steel wheels; 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels are also available.

Inside, the high end look continues, highlighted by a sculptured center console, sporty instrumentation and plush materials. With a starting price of $17,250, this model offers very good value.

Speaking of value, Hyundai typically equips its vehicles better than the competition. Its pricing structure is near or slightly below what the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cruze and Nissan Sentra charge, with more “extras” standard.

Standard Equipment

Indeed, look at the base model and you get keyless entry, premium cloth seats, power windows, power door locks, heated side mirrors, air conditioning, a tilt and telescopic steering column, cruise control, center storage with a tray, front map lights with sunglass holder, a cargo area light, two 12-volt outlets and a 6-speaker audio system.

Take the top-of-the-line Limited edition and your Elantra is equipped with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather seats, a power driver’s seat, illuminated vanity mirrors, aluminum entrance sills for the front doors, steering wheel audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity, BlueLink telematics, heated front seats and an upgraded audio system.

Hyundai offers several package upgrades to enhance each model. The SE Popular Equipment Package brings in alloy wheels, fog lights, a touchscreen display, automatic headlamps, Bluetooth connectivity and illuminated vanity mirrors. The Style Package builds on the base package to deliver a tilt and slide sunroof, leather interior touches, projector beam headlamps with LED accents, chrome trim and black interior cloth.

For the Limited, choose the Ultimate Package and you get a navigation system with a 7-inch screen, Pandora Internet Radio, a 360-watt audio system, dual climate control and push button start. The Tech Package, available with the Sport, brings in the same amenities as the Ultimate Package and adds Hyundai’s Blue Link infotainment package.

Engines and Transmissions

Hyundai equips the base Elantra with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and pairs it with a 6-speed manual transmission. Add $1,000 to the base SE edition’s price and you get an automatic transmission. The Elantra Sport ($21,600) also comes with a manual transmission and is powered by a 2.0-liter engine. Get the automatic and you’ll pay an extra $1,000. The top-of-the-line Hyundai Elantra Limited is priced from $21,700 and is powered by the smaller engine and paired with the automatic transmission.

The standard engine is rated at 145 horsepower and 130 foot-pounds of torque. The Sport edition is rated at 173 horsepower and 164 foot-pounds of torque. Fuel economy comes in at 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway with the base engine paired with an automatic transmission. The Sport edition achieves 24 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway or 35 mpg on the highway with the automatic.

Driving Impressions

As equipped, the Hyundai Elantra Limited came with the smaller of the two four-cylinder engines. The base engine provides sufficient performance, although there were times when extra power would have been helpful, especially on the highway.

The Elantra offers good off the mark acceleration, average for the segment handling, and decent braking. For better handling and feel, the Sport brings in a larger front stabilizer bar and sport-tuned suspension. All models offer independent front suspension and a rear torsion axle suspension.

The driver’s seat is comfortable, fully supportive and all controls are within easy reach. Thankfully, there was very little drama with the telematics as the screen is easy to comprehend with knobs and switches at the ready. The rear seat offers excellent room for two and very good room for three. If you are looking at the Elantra as a family sedan and your children are young, you should be satisfied with what it offers.

Final Thoughts

The 2014 Hyundai Elantra earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ award. There is no reason why the current model won’t receive the same rating.

You should also know that Hyundai offers this model in coupe (discontinued 2017) and GT hatchback body styles, one of just a few manufacturers with several choices in this segment.

About the 2015 Hyundai Genesis Sedan

April 8, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Second generation sedan receives available all-wheel drive.

2015 Hyundai Genesis.
2015 Hyundai Genesis.

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis made its debut at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this past Jan. Sales will begin this spring for the second generation of this larger rear-wheel drive sedan.

The new Genesis advances fluidic sculpture 2.0 or the second generation of a design language popularized by the Sonata midsize sedan. The new model returns with its current engine and transmission offerings intact, but numerous other updates including all-wheel drive bring this luxury sedan up a notch.

2015 Hyundai Genesis

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis is priced from $38,000 with its 3.8-liter V-6 engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. For another $2,500 you get all-wheel drive. A 5.0-liter V-8 engine is also available, but is sold in rear-wheel drive only ($51,500).

The sedans sub-$40,000 price point keeps it the value leader in the midsize luxury sedan class. The Genesis chief competitors include the Cadillac CTS, Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and the Lexus GS.

In the Hyundai line up, Genesis sits between the Azera and Equus. Both models were reviewed on Auto Trends this year; well take a look at the all-new Genesis once it makes it way to us through the fleet rotation.

2015 Hyundai Genesis

Fluidic Sculpture 2.0

The latest Genesis sedan features crisp lines providing a distinct look with its polished lines and refined presentation. Essentially, Hyundais designers took the earlier design language and relaxed it in some sections while sharpening it in other areas. Up front is a six-slat hexagonal grille flanked by new headlamps and standard daytime running lights.

Sharp creases run from the edges of the grille and to the back of the hood. Profile character lines extend from the headlamps across the door handles to the tail lamps. Rocker panel trim, elegantly arched wheel wells, jeweled tail lamps and quad chrome exhaust finishers are among the other exterior highlights of note.

Larger, More Luxurious Cabin

Inside, Hyundai says that Genesis has a more open feel including simplified switchgear, a more sensible layout, and upgraded storage areas. A new head-up display (HUD) is among the the many technologies available or standard with the 2015 Hyundai Genesis. Other technologies include a TFT LCD display, smart cruise control, blind spot detection, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and navigation.

Leather seating is standard with the 3.8 version and ultra-premium leather is provided with the 5.0. Every model is outfitted with 12-way (16-way 5.0) power driver and front passenger seats with 4-way lumbar support, heated front seats, heated rear seats with the AWD model only, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, steering wheel-mounted controls, and two 12-volt outlets. The 5.0 edition also brings in ventilated seats, a power tilt and slide panoramic glass sunroof, genuine matte finish wood, aluminum accents, illuminated door sills, manual rear side sunshades, and a power rear sunshade. Choosing the 5.0 also brings in a 14-speaker Lexicon surround sound audio system.

Dimensions and Fuel Economy

Hyundai claims that the Genesis has the largest interior volume in its class measuring 123 cubic feet. That breaks down to 107.7 cubic feet in passenger volume and 15.3 cubic feet in cargo volume. The new model sits on a longer wheelbase 118.5 versus 115.6, but is nearly the same length as the previous model at 196.5 inches, up from 196.3 inches.

The sedan has also put on some weight, adding approximately 100 to 300 pounds depending on the model. Despite the added poundage, fuel economy improves with the standard model, delivering 18 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, a 2 mpg increase for the open road. Fuel economy for the V-8 remains at 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

Living Large With the Hyundai Equus Ultimate

January 21, 2014 by admin 5 Comments

The Hyundai Equus is the top-of-the-line model in this Korean brands arsenal, a true-blue full-size luxury sedan that is in the same class as the Lexus LS, Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It retails for about $10,000 less than the Lexus and comes in at a price far below its German competitors, offering value in a segment where shoppers seem to care more about prestige and branding than for saving their money. That doesn’t mean that the Equus doesn’t hit many of the high points for the segment it does. Rather, it is a model that seeks to change perceptions about Hyundai and adds the prestige to go with it.

2014 Hyundai Equus
The flagship 2014 Hyundai Equus sedan.

The Equus proportions are in line with the largest Lexus and what the top European brands offer. Its brand name, Hyundai, has long stood for value, with quality and reliability more recent attributes. Combined, these three Hyundai hallmarks have helped the brand enjoy soaring sales even as capacity constraints and stiff competition weighs in.

2014 Hyundai Equus Ultimate

The Equus is a thoroughly wonderful sedan. That it is a Hyundai may explain why fewer than 4,000 units have been sold in each of the past two years, a sedan now in its fourth model year for US sales. In 2013, Lexus sold 10,727 LS sedans, up 28.5 percent. Mercedes-Benz sold 13,303 of its S-Class sedan, up 8.5 percent. BMW sold 10,932 units of its 7 Series, down 1.5 percent. And Audi sold 6,300 units of its A8, up 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Hyundai sold 3,578 Equus units, down 10 percent for the year. Two headwinds are working against the Equus: its Hyundai association and lack of all-wheel drive availability. Brand conscious folk wont buy the Equus because it is a Hyundai and although its rear-wheel drive layout is quite good, not offering all-wheel drive may also hold down sales.

Beyond the mind-numbing statistics, Hyundais Equus offers limo-like good looks, a quiet and comfortable interior, and the latest technological features that large luxury sedans provide. On that level the Equus matches its competitors, the beginning and ending purchase decision point for one segment of shoppers.

2014 Hyundai Equus

Powerful Engine, Smooth Transmission

Under the hood, a 429-horsepower 32-valve V-8 engine is at work, and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is the only powertrain coupling available, but it also the only one needed. It is rated at 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. After 304 miles on a single tank I had to head the pump, getting an estimated 17 mpg in mostly highway driving. Chances are if the Hyundai Equus or one of its competitors is on your list, gas mileage is a low priority.

The Equus design does not follow the current Hyundai fluidic sculpture styling convention. It has a distinctive front grille, flanked by HID headlights located above fog lights set within sculpted alcoves. An air intake is found between the fog lights. This model is outfitted with power operated side mirrors with turn signal indicators, 19-inch alloy wheels, and LED tail lights. The only exterior hint that it is a Hyundai is the scripted H symbol centered between the tail lights. No use of Hyundai anywhere instead, the Equus symbol graces the front hood, the wheels and on the steering wheel.

Leather, Wood, and Refinement

Inside, the 2014 Hyundai Equus is lavishly appointed with supple leather on the seats, across the dash, and on the door panels. The headliner is of microfiber suede, and premium wood trim is in abundance. Hyundai equips the Equus with 12-way power front seats, with heating and cooling elements. The tilt and telescopic steering wheel is also heated, itself made of wood and wrapped in leather. The wheel also includes secondary control switches and dials.

2014 Hyundai Equus

A 9.2-inch display screen features a Driver Information System as well as the navigation interface. The screen is clear, easy to read, and simple to control by means of a large dial located between the front seats. That display features the rear view camera as well as a 360-degree view of the sedan. More than once it came in handy when I needed to back into a tight space.

Todays luxury sedans offer a heads-up display (HUD) and the Hyundai Equus has one of its own. You can display vehicle speed, turn-by-turn navigation, and see several warning displays including blind spot detection within plain sight. I appreciated that I could adjust the height of its appearance on the windshield, with Hyundai making it possible to adjust it up and down with ease.

Hyundai Equus: BMW Amenities, Limousine Ride

View manufacturer details and pricing

Not unexpectedly, the Hyundai Equus has its own audio system of note. If you’re going to compete with the top echelon, then your sound system must deliver. The Equus is equipped with a 598-watt, 17-speaker Lexicon surround sound audio system, one that includes a 13-channel digital amplifier, SiriusXM satellite radio, HD radio, and the accompanying iPod/USB and auxiliary input jacks. Lets just say that if you want a symphony experience or enjoy your favorite rock concert, you wont be disappointed.

Hyundais technology credentials are evident in the Equus LCD instrument cluster. Its a sharply luminous display with a 12.3-inch screen that changes screen color when you change the driving mode (i.e., normal, sport, snow). Trip information is located front and center with the odometer on the left and a speedometer on the right.

2014 Hyundai Equus

Rear seating room is for three, but consider that option carefully. For when there are two people present, the outboard seating positions ratchet up the comfort level by reclining, and can be heated and cooled. You need to drop down the center seat armrest to access these controls which also provide lumbar support, localized heating and cooling, and control of the two front seat back LCD display screens. Both rear side windows have sunshades when the Ultimate package is chosen, providing an additional level of comfort and privacy for rear-seating passengers.

Hyundai Equus or Not?

You may hear that the Hyundai Equus doesn’t have the handling or ride of its upmarket contemporaries. I wont dispute those findings. The Equus reminds me of what the Lincoln Town Car might have become had the Ford Motor Company created a new model. Equus has the price and the package that would satisfy American luxury car buyers, but improved body sculpting, a more forceful grille, and a distinct rear deck would certainly be attention grabbers. As it stands, the Equus is closer in price and style to the Lexus LS than its German competitors, a value-oriented luxury liner that represents a good first shot for Hyundai.

About the 2014 Hyundai Sonata

October 16, 2013 by admin 1 Comment

Hyundai refreshes its popular midsize Sonata sedan.

Without a doubt, the 2011 Hyundai Sonata shook up the midsize segment, forcing its competitors to sit up and take notice. That vehicle introduced a new “fluidic sculpture” design language to the Korean make’s line, what has been replicated elsewhere from the tiny Accent to the larger Azera.

2015 Hyundai Sonata.
The refreshed Hyundai Sonata.

Prior to its update, the Hyundai Sonata was a small-time player but it now rivals the Chevrolet Malibu for fifth place among like sedans. For 2014, the Hyundai Sonata receives a mid-product cycle refresh with the automaker claiming that it has added 50 new or updated changes to its stylish sedan.

Exterior Enhancements

The key changes for the 2014 Hyundai Sonata include an updated grille design, new wheels, HID Xenon headlights, LED tail lamps and a new rear fascia insert. The 17- and 18-inch wheels were designed with cabin noise reduction in mind, further quieted by improved carpeting insulation, additional A and B pillar foam insulation, and an improved dynamic damper.

A body-colored spoiler is now standard with the SE edition.

Cabin Touches

Most of the changes with the 2014 Sonata can be found in the interior. A full leather steering wheel is now standard on both the SE and Limited edition. A ventilated driver seat is standard with the Limited and an LED dome light is now optional on the GLS and standard with the SE and Limited.

Hyundai also has rolled out the third generation of its infotainment system with navigation and audio improvements accessible via the Sonata’s eight-inch touchscreen display. That system is an option, available only with the SE and Limited editions. Both editions also get a new color LCD screen on the instrument panel.

Fully automated temperature controls are new to the Limited and carbon fiber trim is now standard with the SE. A tire-specific tire pressure monitoring system is standard across the 2014 Hyundai Sonata line.

Hyundai Sonata Performance

As before, the 2014 Hyundai Sonata offers two engine choices. Its standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine makes 190 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 179 foot-pounds of torque at 4,250 rpm. This engine is teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting capabilities and delivers 24 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.

Also available is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, rated at 274 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 269 foot-pounds of torque at 1,650 to 4,500 rpm. This engine is available with the SE and Limited editions and now includes a sport-tuned exhaust with the SE. It is also teamed with a SHIFTRONIC six-speed automatic transmission.

Key Safety Features

Priced from $21,350, every Hyundai Sonata offers a long list of standard safety equipment including an all-new vehicle stability management system, stability control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, a suite of airbags, active front headrests, and advanced head restraints for rear seating passengers.

Additional safety features include a rearview camera and two all-new features: a blind spot mirror and blind spot detection.

The Hyundai Assurance protection system continues to provide excellent warranties including a 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle warranty that is also fully transferable and a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. As before, every new Sonata comes with five full years of roadside assistance coverage.

Looking Ahead

The changes for the 2014 Hyundai Sonata will enable this sedan to stay pace with the segment leaders. The Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion have been updated since the 2011 Sonata rolled out and the Malibu has been refreshed for 2014. With a new Camry on the way for 2015 and other models likely to be refreshed soon after, we may see an all-new Sonata within the next two years.
