Handsome Wagon: 2019 Volvo V60

December 18, 2018 by admin 2 Comments

2019 Volvo V60

The V60 is all new and handsomely designed at that.

Just as some manufacturers are distancing themselves from cars, Volvo is embracing them. Further, these car models are not just sedans, but wagons. Indeed, this Swedish automaker offers not one, but two wagon models, including the all-new 2019 V60.

No, Volvo isn’t neglecting SUVs — you’ll find three lines in the brand’s portfolio. Presently, the automaker is also offering two wagons and a pair of sedans, giving it seven model lines. There isn’t a Volvo coupe or sports car to be found, as four-door models comprise the entire lineup.

2019 Volvo V60

2019 Volvo V60 Overview

The 2019 Volvo V60 launches this model’s second generation, replacing the previous model which debuted in 2015. The latest model is based on Volvo’s common modular architecture, which it shares with every other current Volvo model. The V60 wagon is closely aligned with the S60 sedan and the XC60 utility vehicle.

Volvo offers the 2019 V60 in Momentum ($38,900), R-Design ($43,900), and Inscription ($49,400) trims. From there, Volvo divides the product line between T5 FWD (front-wheel drive) and T6 AWD (all-wheel drive) choices, with prices increasing by $4,500 for the latter.

2019 Volvo V60There is a difference in powertrains too as the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is turbocharged with the first choice and both turbocharged and supercharged with the second choice. All models benefit from an eight-speed automatic transmission.

You’ll find ample package offerings with each V60 trim. Base models offer a Heated Front Seats & Heated Steering Wheel Package ($750) and a Premium Package ($2,050, with a rearview mirror compass, automatic dimming mirrors, retractable side mirrors, front & rear park assist, a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert and autobrake, keyless entry, a hands-free power liftgate, and Homelink. Volvo also bundles these two under an Advanced Package ($2,500).

There is also a Multimedia Package ($2,500, with a 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, navigation and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Volvo concludes the Momentum model’s package offerings with a Linear Lime Deco Inlay Package ($600), which adds footwell lights, mood lights and puddle lamps. The cabin is also dressed in eye-popping linear lime deco inlays.

If you select the mid-grade R-Design trim, you’ll find one package choice, the Advanced Package ($2,500). The top-trim Inscription offers a Heated Rear Seats & Heated Steering Wheel Package ($750) and the Advanced Package ($750). You’ll also find an exclusive-to-the-trim Luxury Seat Package ($2,200, backrest massage front seats, power-adjustable side support for the front seats, and ventilated front seats with your choice of one of four Nappa leather colors and patterns).

Design Highlights

Gone is the boxy look of previous Volvo models. The new V60 matches quite well with the S60 sedan from the front bumper to the C pillar (behind the rear seats). A pronounced grille with Volvo’s trademark insignia kicks things off, but the drama quotient is only raised with the standard LED headlights with Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights. This makes for an eye-catching look and the V60 wears it well.

2019 Volvo V60With the V60, Volvo makes a tremendous effort to not make the V60 look like your typical wagon. Sure, the overall look is just that, but with luscious curves, distinct lines and a robust stance, this isn’t anything like your Ford Country Squire of long ago.

Design elements from other Volvo models are apparent here, including the oversized hooked tail lamps. The look is at once practical as it is elegant, proving that a wagon is a viable option in a market crowded with crossovers.

2019 Volvo V60Inside, the cabin is open, with clean lines and pretty materials evident. As you would expect, driver controls are strategically placed and ergonomic. The front seats are firm, yet supportive and comfortable. The second-row seat offers ample legroom and is ideal for two adults. The driveline hump, however, makes it difficult to justify using the middle position. Storage capacity measures 29 cubic feet behind the second row or 48.2 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.

All models have full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, dual-zone climate control, and a load compartment cover. Upgrades include a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated seats, and a power-folding rear seat.

Safety & Technology

You’re not going to find every conceivable safety feature included with the Volvo V60, but they’re readily available. We already outlined the packages, which complete the safety offerings when chosen.

The standard trim offers lane keeping aid, oncoming lane mitigation, and roadside information. Upgrade to the R-Design trim and you’ll find a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert and automatic braking, rear collision warning, and front and rear park assist. At the Inscription level, the safety features are unchanged.

2019 Volvo V60

We like that Volvo doesn’t skimp on technologies as even the base model comes well equipped. Here, you’ll find a 9-inch display screen, one that’s far easier to use than the previous layout. You’ll also find a 10-speaker, 220-watt audio system, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto smartphone integration.

Upgrades include a navigation system and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

On the Road with the Volvo V60

With Volvo, you get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and nothing else. But it is what Volvo does with the engine that makes all difference. All T5 models have a turbocharger, while T6 models combine a supercharger and a turbocharger. The T8 trim isn’t available with the V60, at least not yet, but it builds on the T6 by adding hybrid technology for the strongest model yet.

Volvo’s powertrain approach isn’t right for everyone, but it is workable. An eight-speed automatic transmission is universal to all contemporary Volvo models.

2019 Volvo V60

Our equipped V60 T6 is an all-wheel-drive model packing 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, which supplies more power than most V6 engines have and equal to V8 power from a generation ago. The supercharger-turbocharger combination means there isn’t any turbo lag present. Further, you’ll get ample front- and back-end boost, something no other forced-induction engine supplies.

With ample power at the ready, the only thing missing is the vroom of a robust naturally aspirated motor. Fortunately, Volvo doesn’t fake things with an electronically enhanced exhaust. The engine’s din, though, is noisy. The transmission shoots off gears with precision and steering is weighted. There is some body roll on twisty roads, but not to the level of some crossovers. The available electronically controlled shock absorbers are managed with a dial and four settings.

Parting Thoughts: 2019 Volvo V60

Do you need or want a wagon? Volvo certainly hopes so. There aren’t many manufacturers offering one, which makes a comparison difficult. We drove the Buick Regal TourX model earlier this year, but the Volvo is better equipped and a cut above in materials used.

Overall, the V60 finds an intriguing medium between the XC60 crossover and S60 sedan. Beginning in 2019, you’ll also find a “Cross Country” version, which features a one-inch higher profile and special underbody cladding. It has off-road connotations, but you’ll want to keep it on the road.

Polestar Powered: 2019 Volvo S60

November 24, 2018 by admin 4 Comments

Fast times in a Polestar sedan.

2019 Volvo S60 Polestar
A small badge on the face of this model indicates a Polestar version.

Electrification is now a significant part of what Volvo is all about. Indeed, the Swedish automaker continues to roll out plug-in variants of its cars and crossovers, models which are more efficient but also pack a strong punch.

The 2019 Volvo S60 is one such model, an all-new entry-level sedan with a boosted four-cylinder engine and an available all-wheel-drive plug-in version. It launches this sedan’s third generation, once again putting this sedan in the crosshairs of the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Other competitors include the Jaguar XE, Lexus IS, Lincoln MKZ, and the Infiniti Q50.

Thus, the challenge for Volvo is not only to do battle with a handful of strong competitors, but also to woo crossover-minded customers to the sedan. The task is daunting, but Volvo appears ready to engage.

2019 Volvo S60

Volvo’s plan to fully electrify its product line is on course as each new model now offers a plug-in version. Further, this automaker now offers just one gasoline engine in each of its models, a four-cylinder direct-injected workhorse with a displacement of 2.0 liters.

What Volvo does with this engine in each application makes all the difference. Its T5 models include a turbocharger and make 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed to the front wheels.

Volvo T6 models combine a supercharger with the turbocharger to increase the performance output to 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Here, power is sent to all four wheels.

2019 Volvo S60
The Volvo S60 T8 represents a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.

At the top of the power spectrum is the all-wheel-drive T8, which utilizes the T6’s engine and adds twin electric motors attached to the front and rear axles. This particular arrangement raises the performance quotient to 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque

But wait…there is more! Indeed, the “more” is a Polestar variant of the T8, a model which sees a boost in performance to 415 horsepower. Lucky for me, it was the Polestar version that supplied me with neck-snapback performance for a week of surprisingly fun driving.

By the way, every S60 model has an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Son of a Volvo S90

The Volvo S60 looks a lot like a Volvo S90, the automaker’s flagship sedan. Notably, every new Volvo product is derived from a single global architecture, thus the S60 shares much with its larger counterpart.

This means the S60 has a look that is as elegant as the S90 with its bold grille marked with Volvo’s signature emblem. Moreover, most trims have “Thor’s hammer” accent lights, which add a dramatic touch wherever they’re present. Equally fetching, you’ll find statement-making “E-shaped” LED tail lamps.

Front to back, the S60 is muscular, yet elegant. Its tapered hood, firm shoulders, late-rising beltline, and notched rear deck suggests a model in motion without appearing overwrought. The Polestar trims add discreet badging, Brembo brakes and special rims to enhance that look.

2019 Volvo S60 R-Design

Inside, the cabin is roomy with space for five. Yes, four is ideal, but five will find room in a pinch.

The S60’s interior aligns with the brand’s other cabins, delivering a distinct yet minimalistic look with choice materials and excellent fit and finish. The dashboard is layered, with pleasing lines and chrome touches and available wood trim adding visual interest. Soft-touch materials and leather dominate on the top-end model.

When it comes to seating, Volvo excels. The front seats are not simply supportive but crafted to hold your upper and lower back and torso in comfort. I’ve driven many luxury models with supposed comfortable seats, but few reach Volvo’s level of comfort.

As for the rear seat, perhaps the biggest challenge for some is legroom — unlucky for you if you’re tall and the front passengers are tall too. But this problem is common among competing models, not just Volvo.

Safety & Technology

Volvo is synonymous with safety, as its vehicles are typically at the forefront of all things passenger and pedestrian protection. But we won’t assume that everyone knows what this means, so a review of the standard and available safety features are in order.

Where the previous model earned a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), we believe the new model will attain the institute’s Top Safety Pick+ rating. That improvement is due largely to the active bending light technology, which improves lighting range, especially when cornering.

In any case, all 2019 S60 models come with such features as a lane keeping aid, oncoming lane mitigation, run-off road mitigation, collision mitigation support (rear), automatic braking after a collision, and blind spot information with rear cross-traffic alert.

2019 Volvo S60 Polestar

An available package upgrade brings in Pilot Assist, which is a semi-autonomous drive system with adaptive cruise control. Some models make available a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert. In all, Volvo Cars continue to make safety a priority in every vehicle it builds.

On the tech front, we’ve seen Volvo make a strong improvement with its recent models. The automaker’s branded Sensus interface was at one time a mishmash of buttons, knobs and switches, a complex affair at first glance and difficult to learn moving forward.

The current iteration, however, is much simpler with its big, crisp touchscreen supplying at-the-ready commands and clear instructions. That doesn’t mean the system is simple through and through. For instance, you must use the panel to find the seat heating and heated steering wheel functions — they’re not front and center, but at least you can locate them and adjust accordingly.

Among the standard features are an audio package, Bluetooth connectivity, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, USB connections, and satellite radio. The list of upgrades includes a 360-degree surround-view camera, Harman Kardan or Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound audio packages, a head-up display, and navigation.

On the Road With a 2019 Volvo S60

I fully expected the S60 to deliver ample power, yet I was unprepared with how strong a performer this sedan is. Likely, most buyers will find the standard T5 or T6 models sufficiently pleasing, matching the best of their German counterparts with ease.

But the T8 brings this model to a whole new level, thanks mostly to electrification, which amplifies performance, but without the drama. This means the sedan is fast but relatively quiet as it moves about. And it operates somewhat in the vein of the Tesla Model S too, which delivers its power electrically. Thus, there is more of a pleasing hum accompanying the sedan when operating at full throttle — wholly unlike the raucous boom of the M3.

2019 Volvo S60 Sensus

Polestar is Volvo’s performance division and with the enhanced T8 model the sedan has lightweight 19-inch wheels, firm dampers, and Brembo brakes. Credit Volvo with delivering weighted, yet crisp steering with remarkable handling.

Brake-based torque vectoring keeps this sedan planted on weaving roads and with up to half the engine’s torque sent to the rear axle, the power distribution is welcome. This Volvo grips well and only the slightest amount of understeer is present while engaging in enthusiastic driving.

Quite frankly, it is hard to believe that a four-cylinder engine powers this model. But with a supercharger, turbocharger and electrification joining in, boosted power makes it seem like a robust V8 is under the hood.

Parting Thoughts: 2019 Volvo S60

Volvo has come a long way in a few short years as it has replaced each of its current models with new ones, added a few additional variants, and overhauled its powertrain structure.

At some point, we’ll see fully electric Volvos joining its PHEV versions, perhaps powering some future models exclusively. At press time, we don’t have the fuel economy numbers of the S60 T8, but with judicious use of the plug-in option, 30 mpg seems likely. Further, when most of your trips are short, the electric side provides a 21-mile range, ensuring that your stops at the pumps are further apart.

Until recently, we didn’t mention Volvo products often when comparing European, Asian and American luxury models. But with a fresh product line enhanced by modern powertrains, advanced technologies, and pleasing interiors, we think Volvo is worthy of that comparison.

On the Road With the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan

September 8, 2017 by admin 15 Comments

Updated on Oct. 26, 2017, to reflect this model’s IIHS safety rating.

Quality time with the all-new Volkswagen Tiguan.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SE
2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SE.

Those of us who review new cars are often flown in by the manufacturer for a media event, allowing us to preview and drive a certain model. Such opportunities make for a good chance to meet company representatives, including engineers, designers, executives, and marketing people.

The drive time, however, is usually short, limited to a few hours behind the wheel, and are almost always split with a media partner. While we may be able to formulate a good first impression, they’re still never long enough to develop a thorough review.

Happily, manufacturers typically follow up the introductions by adding new vehicles to our media rotation. This means a model similar to what we drove a few weeks or months earlier is bound to appear for a full week of testing. And that’s precisely what happened when a 2018 VW Tiguan arrived at my home as September dawned.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SE

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan: Four Grades

The 2018 VW Tiguan is an all-new compact SUV now available in Volkswagen showrooms. You have a choice of four grades: S ($25,195), SE ($28,930), SEL ($32,550), and SEL Premium ($36,250). Add $1,300 for all-wheel drive. Prices do not include the mandatory $900 destination and handling charge.

My weekly driver for this review was a 2018 VW Tiguan SE. This front-wheel-drive model retails from $28,930 and added $1,200 for the panoramic sunroof package. VW then subtracted $850 because this one wasn’t built with the automaker’s automatic emergency braking package. Thus, the sticker price came in at $30,180.

Don’t confuse this Tiguan with the Tiguan Limited, the first-generation model renamed and still in production for the 2017 model year. The Tiguan Limited ($21,995) has two package choices: Wheel ($495) and Premium ($1,295). Add $865 for the destination fee. There is no telling how long the original will be around. For the sake of this review, we’ll explore the 2018 Tiguan model in SE grade.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SE

Exterior Highlights

Where the first-generation Tiguan was the smallest model in the segment, the second-generation model is now one of the largest. The expanded footprint means not only is the cabin larger, but the overall look moves away from the original’s almost toy-like appearance.

The new model is a welcome departure, with a handsome front fascia, character lines running from front to back, and an overall look that is at once elegant and sporty.

All models come with power adjustable and heatable side mirrors, roof rails, and LED taillights. Heated washer nozzles, power-folding door mirrors with puddle lights, and a panoramic sunroof are part of a package or come in the upper trim level models.

The 2018 Tiguan offers standard aluminum alloy wheels ranging from 17 to 20 inches and set within all-season tires.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SE

Interior Highlights

A larger Tiguan means there is more room inside. Volkswagen also takes the unusual approach to add a third row to some models, something only the Nissan Rogue has and the Toyota RAV4 previously offered.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SEThat third row, however, comes standard in front-wheel drive models, but is optional in all-wheel drive models (a $500 upgrade). Figure that VW believes AWD shoppers have utility in mind and aren’t especially interested in an extra row.

The first two rows are, of course, the roomiest. I found the front seats comfortable and supportive, and the second-row 40:20:40 bench ideal for two or three in a pinch. Getting to the third row means pushing forward and tilting the second-row seat. The access point isn’t as wide as found in the larger VW Atlas and once you arrive you’ll find two small seats. Essentially, they’re jump seats, ideal for preteens, but only for short drives. By no means are they comfortable — support is wanting and padding is thin.

The rest of the Tiguan’s interior matches well with what the competition offers, including the Chevrolet Equinox, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Escape, and Jeep Compass. Soft-touch materials, plastics and brightwork trim cover much of the interior. The base model has cloth seats, the two middle grades come in imitation leather, while the top-trim offers real leather.

The base model offers minimum trim, including cruise control, a telescoping steering column, air conditioning, and a manually operated driver’s seat. The equipment list is more palatable at the SE level, bringing in keyless entry and push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power driver’s seat, and heated front seats. Other models add dual-zone climate control and a power liftgate.

VW Tiguan Safety Features

We’re waiting on the safety scores from both Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While the previous model didn’t achieve the top ratings, we’re expecting the 2018 Tiguan to show improvement.

Beyond the usual anti-lock brakes, stability and disability control, and tire pressure monitoring system, all models have a rearview camera and an intelligent crash response system. Following an accident, this system automatically unlocks doors, activates interior lights, and cuts power to the fuel tank.

Forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking and pedestrian monitoring along with an active blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert comes standard on all trims or is in a package on the base model. Other available features include lane departure warning, park distance control, and high beam control.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SE

Technology Equipment and Offerings

Standard tech features include a six-speaker audio system, one USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 6.5-inch color touchscreen. Also included is Volkswagen’s Car-Net App-Connect system for compatible devices, providing connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

At the SE level, this grade offers an 8-inch color touchscreen with satellite radio and two additional USB ports. An upgraded entertainment system comes with the SEL.

Volkswagen’s infotainment system is fairly straightforward, offering a clear display and an understandable layout. Apple CarPlay connectivity was seamless.

On the Road With the 2018 Tiguan

Like some competing models — Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V — Nissan offers just one engine choice with the 2018 Tiguan — a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

If it sounds familiar to you it should — it is the latest version of the engine that has long powered the Tiguan. This time, Volkswagen changed the performance settings, as the four-banger now makes 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque compared to 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque in the previous model. This means you’ll conserve power at the outset, but enjoy greater boost later.

Unlike my first time with the 2018 Tiguan where Colorado mountain ranges beckoned, my drives covered the hilly terrain of central North Carolina. I made sure I had enough twisty roads to cover and I wasn’t disappointed.

As before, I found the steering sufficiently weighted, the handling proficient, and the brakes firm. Not once did I feel that there wasn’t enough power available, although I couldn’t help wonder how the engine would perform when four or more people were present and their gear too.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan SE

2018 Tiguan Parting Thoughts

The 2018 Tiguan gives Volkswagen a strong entry in the ultra-competitive small compact SUV segment. It joins the all-new and midsize Atlas, while the Touareg retires after 2017. If you’re looking for something smaller the Golf SportWagen and Alltrack have you covered, effectively giving VW a much needed 1-2-3 utility vehicle punch.

Shop for a 2018 Tiguan and I recommend starting with the SE grade. It offers many of the amenities customers expect along with several driver assist features. I’m glad Volkswagen sent a front-wheel drive model for my review as most people in my area can do without all-wheel drive. With the panoramic sunroof upgrade, expect your SE FWD model to come in just under $30,000.

Is the 2018 Volvo V90 the World’s Most Glamorous Wagon?

September 7, 2017 by admin 2 Comments

After a 20-year hiatus, the Volvo V90 returns.

2018 Volvo V90 Cross Country.
2018 Volvo V90 Cross Country.

Station wagons dominated the American scene from the 1950s to 1970s, serving as the people hauler of choice for large families. By the 1980s, wagons (as they were by then commonly called) began to disappear. Once the 1990s arrived, even fewer models were available. Minivans became the new vehicle of choice, essentially ending the wagon phenomenon.

Apparently, Volvo never got the message as they continued to build wagons for years after. Models such as the V40, V50, and V70 came and went, with the Swedish automaker curtailing its US models for several years in the early 2010s.

In 2015, the Volvo V60 rolled out, restarting Volvo’s wagon quest. Beginning with the 2018 model year, the V90 itself returns after a 20-year break. While the V60 is handsome in its own right, the V90 just may be the world’s most glamorous wagon.

Yes, that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it! And judging by some of the comments I’ve received from colleagues, friends, and neighbors, Volvo hit all the right buttons with the V90, especially from its design standpoint.

2018 Volvo V90

There are two lines of V90 models offered. One is the standard model, the other is the Cross Country, best known for its one-inch higher ground clearance. My test model was a 2018 Volvo V90 Cross Country T6 AWD, so that’ll serve as the focus of my review. That said, I’ll share price information for both, before diving deep into all things test model.

The 2018 V90 comes in two trims: R-Design ($49,950) and Inscription ($51,950). At present, the V90 Cross Country is a T6 AWD-only model ($55,300). Add $995 for destination and handling.

The sticker price for my Cross Country test model was $69,440 and it had the following packages and upgrades: Luxury ($4,500); Convenience ($1,950); Metallic Paint ($595); 20-inch alloy wheels ($800); rear air suspension ($1,200); Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound System ($3,200); and a head-up display ($900). There are a few other accessories available, including a built-in child seat and tow package. In all, your price might top $72,000.

Exterior: A Matter of Style

What may be the V90’s strongest suit is its style — inside and out. What you have here is a large wagon, but it doesn’t feature the bland or boxy styling of past models. The same elegant grille found on the S90 sedan and XC90 SUV marks the front fascia, with striking “hammer of Thor” LED lighting elements amplifying the look.

The wagon’s profile is at once elegant and sporty, benefiting from a one-inch raised ground clearance. A sweeping roofline, rising beltline and much sculpting and character lines set this wagon apart from models of old.

But it is at the rear where the V90 makes a clean departure from the pack with its oversized L-shaped combination lamps, notched liftgate with a spoiler, and dual exhaust ports. Front to back this model is perhaps the most handsome wagon design you’ll find anywhere today as well as down through the ages.

Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, rear tinted windows, and a power moonroof with sun blind. Options include integrated split end pipes ($220), side scuff plates ($845), and 20-inch wheels.

On Cross Country models you’ll find underbody cladding, but don’t mistake these for skid plates as they consist of some undetermined lightweight material, not the usual steels and alloys you’ll find on SUVs, such as from Jeep. Notably, Volvo advertising materials suggest doing nothing more than driving the Cross Country on wet roads and packed down trails — this wagon simply isn’t designed for serious off-roading.

Interior: Elegance Matching German Rivals

The top German luxury brands — Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz — are the measuring stick for evaluating luxury cars. The 2018 Volvo V90 is a match for all three, delivering a clean, upscale and altogether pleasing environment to behold.

You’ll find leather and wood (or optional metal mesh) generously apportioned throughout the cabin. The electronic dashboard offers a clean interface on an uncluttered center stack and is visually pleasing. Volvo wrote the book on ergonomics, thus all controls are sensibly placed.

Up front are a pair of firm, but comfortable bucket seats topped by headrests with a “space age” look. The second row 40:20:40 bench seat is also comfortable, with sufficient room for three. Volvo could have added a third row, but be glad that they did not as there is a generous 53.9 cubic feet of standard storage space available. Yard sale finds, anyone?

A long list of standard equipment includes keyless entry with toggle start, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, full power accessories, power-adjusted front seats, and multi-zone climate control.

The available luxury package adds heated outboard rear seats, rear and rear side window sun shades, additional leather and sill trim, backrest massage for the front seats, and expanded leather choices.

V90 Cross Country Performance Matters

When it comes to today’s Volvo, you’ll find just one engine choice across the entire model line. A 2.0-liter four cylinder is it, but what Volvo chooses to do with said engine makes all the difference in the world. Or at least on the road.

No, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill engine. It is a modern powerplant with forced induction at work. For this reason, Volvo offers the engine in two variants. The first option is a direct-injected turbocharged (T5) engine generating 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. These numbers are within the ballpark of what some naturally aspirated V6 engines produce.

The second option keeps the turbocharger and adds a supercharger. It is a highly unusual arrangement for a vehicle and, to my knowledge, Volvo is the only manufacturer using both forms of forced induction in the same engine. As a result, performance jumps to 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque for this so-called T6 engine. That’s within the range of what some small V8s produce. By the way, both engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission supplied by Aisin.

My test model had the more powerful engine, which automatically adds all-wheel drive. The beauty of this dual forced-induction system is that the supercharger supplies upfront power, while the turbocharger kicks in up the power band curve to extend boost. The engine feels more powerful than its size, but make no mistake about it: it sounds like a four-cylinder engine. Also, the exhaust note is quite tame — you don’t buy a Volvo for raucous performance, but for fuel economy — my test model makes an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Choose the T5 FWD model and you’ll find an outstanding 24/34 mpg city/highway rating. You’ll need to fuel your model with premium gasoline.

Steering is crisp and handling offers decent feedback. But there is a weak point with this model even with the air suspension system added and dynamic drive chosen — it has the bouncy feel common to wagons of yore. Further, when tackling washboard surfaces, you’ll feel it. None of this should come as a surprise as the V90 is the largest wagon on the market.

Safety: Pilot Assist Debuts

Volvo is synonymous with safety and the company’s reputation precedes it. That said, there is almost always something different you’ll find when an updated or all-new Volvo model debuts. The big news this year is standard Pilot Assist, what gives customers their first taste of autonomous driving.

This semi-autonomous system works with adaptive cruise control to keep the car centered in your lane as well as to supply sufficient separation with the vehicle centered immediately in front of you. When activated, Pilot Assist “views” the center line and side marking(s) to ensure your vehicle stays on course, even as the road curves. Gentle steering inputs from the system keep the car centered; braking and acceleration is also controlled, but all three are easily overridden by the driver.

I activated the system just below I-540 on US Route 1 while heading south (Wake County, NC), keeping Pilot Assist active until I exited at Carbonton Road (State Hwy. 42) near Sanford. Heading west on that road, I reactivated the system once I moved past the elementary school.

Unlike Route 1 with its mostly straight shot, this road rises and falls, and has its shares of twists and turns. There were times when I overrode Pilot Assist for one simple reason — I had grown tired of the near constant inputs.

I activated the system once again as I turned left on Hwy. 42 to head south on South Carbonton Road (Lee to Chatham to Moore counties), which eases into Glendon Carthage Road past the Alston House (House in the Horseshoe). I turned Pilot Assist off for good once I approached Carthage’s business district.

Pilot Assist allowed me to drive hands free (fingers just off the steering wheel) for 10 seconds at a time before a “take steering wheel” warning appeared on the head up display, followed by a second notice on the instrument panel. If you ignore the first visual warning, the system allows you to drive another 5 seconds before a warning chime sounds. Ignore that chime and you’ll have an additional 5 seconds of hands-off driving before a follow-up warning and chime occurs. Immediately, Pilot Assist deactivates, requiring you to take full control of the car.

I must have driven at least 30 miles without my hands firmly grasping the steering wheel, although no more than 15 to 20 seconds at a time before I laid hold of the wheel. The sensation of driving without firmly holding onto the steering wheel was an odd one for me. Indeed, there was one time when it seemed as if the Volvo was about to leave the road, so I took firm control of the steering wheel to redirect the wagon. Volvo admits the system isn’t perfect as it may misread things along the side of the road, such as a traffic cone and mistake it for something else.

You should not rest your hands in your lap while using Pilot Assist. Furthermore, I only activated the system where roads were dry per Volvo’s instructions. Cruise control-contributed hydroplaning is a real danger.

Technology Features and Options

Volvo once offered a dreadful infotainment system interface known as Sensus. Well, the Sensus name continues, but the pain is mercifully gone. The prior system included more than two dozen buttons and knobs, offering an arrangement I found confusing and distracting. Volvo must have figured the system was a hot mess and contrary to all things safety. That’s because what’s now in place is far superior and very easy to use.

The new interface is clean and ruled by a touchscreen evenly divided into four sections. From top to bottom you’ll find the current position (navigation), media, phone connectivity, and car status. At the base of the screen, you can manage climate control as well as seat heating and cooling. For these reasons, I give the updated system two thumbs up.

Standard equipment includes a 224-watt audio system, satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity and music streaming, USB ports, and an auxiliary audio input. There is also available for upgrade a Bowers & Wilkins audio system with 19 speakers and a 1,400-watt output. It’s the type of system audiophiles prize; how Volvo integrated the Tweeter on the dashboard is nothing short of a work of art.

Volvo V90 Parting Thoughts

So Volvo makes the most beautiful wagon on earth. Or at least it does in the eyes of some.

Of course, some shoppers may never see past its body style, preferring an SUV (XC90) or a sedan (S90) instead. Happily, Volvo has you covered in all three categories.

Is the one-inch lift of the Cross Country worth it? Oddly, it is if you want to save money as the standard T6 AWD R-Design model costs $55,950 or $650 more than the Cross Country. Add in the $4,500 luxury package and you’ll pay about $60,000 for a unique wagon with a sporty flair.

Highlights of the 2018 Volvo Product Reveal

August 23, 2017 by admin 3 Comments

Updated Sept. 5, 2017, to reflect specification changes.

Rejuvenated Volvo gains marketshare.

2018 Volvo S90
Volvo’s flagship sedan just got a few inches longer.

Volvo Cars continue to transition away from old platforms and powertrains, to new and updated models powered exclusively by four-cylinder gasoline engines, including some paired with electric motors.

For 2018, several changes are evident, with most of the new vehicles already available in dealer showrooms. We’ll look at these changes, what they mean for consumers, and how the Swedish automaker stacks up against other premium brands.

2018 Volvo S90

One year removed from its introduction, the large Volvo S90 sedan benefits from an important change. In particular, the stretched wheelbase version — not previously available in the United States and Canada — becomes the sole offering in both markets.

What this means for passengers, especially people fortunate enough to sit in the rear seat, is excellent legroom. That space is now approaching what you would find in stretched wheelbase sedans from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. What’s also noteworthy is that the starting price of the big Volvo is under $50,000.

There are additional changes for 2018, including adding a rear window power sunshade, rear side window sunshades, rear passenger seat control (of the front passenger seat), and a luxury center armrest. A panoramic roof is now standard, an all-wheel drive option comes to the base model, and a T8 plug-in hybrid model joins the line.

Check out my full review of the 2017 S90 to learn more.

2018 Volvo V90 and V90 Cross Country

Wagon fans everywhere are rejoicing as the 2018 Volvo V90 and V90 Cross Country roll out. The new models are derived from the S90’s platform, but there are some differences with the specifications.

Just so you know, the difference between the V90 and V90 Cross Country is one inch. That is, the V90 CC has an extra inch of ground clearance for what Volvo says is meant for consumers who “pursue an active lifestyle.” Parsing the marketing language means little more than a slightly elevated presence — certainly not as tall as the similar XC90, but supplying slightly better sight lines than the standard model.

2018 Volvo V90
If you can’t decide between a sedan and a crossover, there is always a wagon.

No, you won’t attempt serious off-roading with this model either, as it doesn’t have true skid plates and other protective underbody gear, nor is there a transfer case present for low-range gearing. Gravel roads? Yes. Fording streams or climbing rocks? Not recommended.

What may appeal to V90 shoppers regardless of which model they choose is the roomy cargo space behind the second-row seat — 69 cubic feet, to be precise. Fold down the second-row seat and that space extends further, although Volvo hasn’t released the measurements.

The V90 is very similar to the standard wheelbase S90, at least in the passenger compartment. This means five can ride in comfort with the wagon supplying the cargo space some shoppers prefer, especially those who don’t want a crossover.

2018 Volvo XC60

2018 Volvo XC60
Thor’s hammer is evident on this 2018 Volvo XC60.

The XC60 is a familiar name to Volvo fans, a small crossover introduced in 2010 (check this). For 2018, the XC60 is all-new with improvements equaling what’s found in the very popular XC90.

For starters, you’ll immediately notice the “Thor’s hammer” headlamp lighting treatments, current to all new Volvo models. The look accents a handsome, even aggressive nose, giving this Volvo a clean, polished appearance.

Front to rear, the new XC60 appears more evocative than the previous model, with muscular wheel arches, pronounced body sculpting, and a slightly rising beltline. That beltline sweeps up at the end, drawing attention to the rear roof pillar. At the rear, you’ll find the expected angular tail lamps, sentry-like exclamation points on either side of the liftgate.

Wheel choices include 19-, 20- and 21-inch alloy designs. All models have a panoramic moonroof with a power sunshade, integrated aluminum roof rails, power-controlled and heated side mirrors, and dual round tail lamps.

2018 Volvo XC60
A new Sensus infotainment system punctuates the XC60’s cabin.

The XC60’s interior is beautifully laid out, with natural materials such as wood, leather, and metal used liberally throughout. Great care was taken to craft a cabin that is both pleasing and luxurious, Clearly, the new XC60 successfully matches what its competitive set offers, namely the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Lexus NX, and Mercedes-Benz GLC.

The standard equipment list is lengthy and includes a 12.3-inch digital drive instrument panel display with navigation, a 9-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, and 10-way power front seats.

Customers may upgrade from standard leather seats to Nappa leather and driftwood inlays. For a price you can upgrade from the standard 10-speaker, 330-watt audio system to a 1,100-watt, 15-speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio system. What’s that price? How does $3,200 sound? Other upgrades include a convenience package ($2,000 or $2,200, depending on trim), an advanced package with upgraded lighting and head up display ($1,900).

When all is said and done, figure that your final price will fall somewhere between $45,000 and $50,000. Choose the hybrid and you’ll pay a few thousand dollars more after taking an available $5,002 federal tax credit.

Volvo On Track

Volvo invited automotive media to an event where the three models were showcased and available for driving. Company representatives indicated that Volvo is on track to reach where it needs to be, delivering new vehicles with updated technologies, state-of-the-art styling, and leading-edge safety features.

We also learned that Volvo Cars is happy with its relationship with parent company Geely, a Chinese concern that’s given the company much free range. Some models now sold in the US are built in China, with the rest coming from Sweden or Belgium. Beginning in late 2018, the first US-made S60 models will roll off an assembly line in Berkeley County, South Carolina, northeast of Charleston. Some of those models will be exported to China.

2018 Volvo XC60
Volvo’s fleet targets “active lifestyle” adults and families.

As for consumers — the ultimate decider of Volvo’s success — they’re showing their pleasure by buying more vehicles, even in a declining market. Personally, I believe Volvo has aced both its exterior and interior designs and greatly improved its technologies, including its previously cumbersome Sensus infotainment system.

Perhaps the company’s weakest point is its powertrain offerings with customers given a choice of one or two forced induction systems along with available hybrid engineering. If you want a naturally aspirated V6 or V8, or a turbo-diesel engine, you won’t find them. Instead, Volvo is hinging its future on electrification with both hybrid and pure electric models playing significant roles in all Volvo products from 2019 on.

Swank SUV: 2017 Audi Q7

July 11, 2017 by admin 3 Comments

Audi presents the latest iteration of its largest SUV.

2017 Audi Q7
The 2017 Audi Q7.

The second-generation Audi Q7 has arrived, bringing with it a more car-like look. At first glance, you may see a tall wagon as Audi lowered the hood and relaxed the roofline. Inch for inch, the dimensional changes are minimal for Audi’s largest SUV. The first-generation model lasted from 2007 to 2015; Audi skipped the 2016 model year.

As before, the Audi 2017 Q7 comes in Premium ($49,000), Premium Plus ($53,000), and Prestige ($65,400) trims along with two gasoline engine choices: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder or a 3.0-liter supercharged V6. Both engines come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting capabilities.

Gone is the turbo-diesel, vanquished following the Volkswagen Group’s diesel debacle that uncovered emissions cheating followed by billions of dollars in fines and buybacks. For a while, Audi pushed to have the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel certified, but that now seems unlikely.

My test model was the Premium Plus with the base engine. Opting for the V6 is a $6,500 upgrade for the first two trims, but this engine comes with the Prestige grade.

Options included a vision package ($2,000) bringing in a virtual cockpit, full LED headlights, and a top view camera system. Also added were 19-inch five v-spoke aluminum wheels ($1,000), cold weather package — heated steering wheel and heated front seats ($500), rear side airbags ($350), and high gloss black and terra brown walnut wood inlays ($350). With a $950 destination charge, the final price came in at $58,725. All told, that’s about $20,000 less than the Land Rover Discovery I had a month earlier.

2017 Audi Q7

Exterior Overview

Standard equipment includes Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights, power adjustable and power-folding heated side mirrors, LED taillights, and rear fog lights. All models come with aluminum roof rails, a power tailgate, and rear privacy glass. Audi offers a choice of three 18-inch wheel designs.

Package and trim-level upgrades raise the luxury and design quotient, adding such features as running boards, 20-inch wheels set within all-season run-flat tires, power soft-closing doors, and integrated twin-trapezoidal exhaust outlets.

Interior Highlights

The Audi Q7 offers a 2+3+2 seating arrangement with ample room for the first two rows, but narrow space in the third row. The second-row seats move and tilt forward sufficiently, but that back row is best suited for two youngsters.

2017 Audi Q7Most of the time you’ll want the third row seat, resting inside the floor to take advantage of the 37.5 cubic feet of storage space (14.8 cubic feet behind the third-row seat and 71.6 cubic feet behind the first row).

Audi interiors are beautiful — handsomely designed with high-end materials throughout. The workmanship is top notch — what’s especially evident is the careful attention to driver control placement and to the way the telematics system functions.

Leather covers the seats, the door inlays, wraps the steering wheel and graces the top of the shift knob.

Standard equipment includes stainless steel door sill inlays, ambient LED lighting, a tilt and telescopic steering column, three-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof with a power sunshade, and 10 beverage holders. You’ll find very comfortable power front seats with heating elements.

Upgrades swap out the cloth headliner with a Black Alcantara headliner, individually contoured front seats with ventilation, Valcona leather, four-zone climate control, a power-folding third-row seat, and extended LED ambient lighting.
2017 Audi Q7

On the Road

Audi provides a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 252 horsepower and 273 foot-pounds of torque. And if that isn’t enough power, you can upgrade to a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 generating 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

My test model had the smaller engine and it quickly became apparent when I stepped on the gas pedal. This fairly sizable SUV pulls away from a dead stop with deliberation, cranking out more power once the turbo spools up. However, even when fully engaged the engine just didn’t seem to provide enough power to correspond with the size of the SUV. Had I driven with a full contingent of passengers, I might have found the experience lethargic.

Manufacturers are putting smaller engines under the hood in an effort to boost fuel economy. Consequently, there is a corresponding decline in power even with forced induction. If considering the Audi Q7 as your family vehicle, pony up the extra bucks to get the supercharged V6. Comparatively, the larger engine distributes full power from the onset and in a far greater amount — 32 percent more than the junior engine.

Although the base engine may fall short of expectations, nothing else about the Q7’s ride and drive disappoints. Indeed, all models come equipped with Audi’s prestigious Quattro all-wheel drive system, renowned for its strong handling attributes. This SUV’s sight lines are quite good, the ride is comfortable, and steering is light to the touch. As always, you can dial in the level of feedback received through the MMI screen — comfort, auto, dynamic, and individual. Choose the mode based on your driving preferences — the suspension, transmission, and engine settings adjust accordingly.

2017 Audi Q7

Safety and Technology Features

The 2017 Audi Q7 is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick.

This SUV excelled in all five crash testing criteria — small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints & seats. In front crash protection the Q7 garnered a superior score.

The Q7 comes with the usual contingent of safety features, including a suite of airbags and brake assist.

2017 Audi Q7
Overhead console in the Audi Q7.

A driver assistance package ($2,400) brings in adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and high beam assist.

Audi is synonymous with technology and that’s evident across the model line. Driver-assist technologies are a big deal these days and Audi rises to the occasion.

At speeds up to 52 mph, “Audi pre sense city” identifies cornering and stationary vehicles and pedestrians, and delivers full braking when a collision is certain. Available pre sense plus extends that limit to 137 mph and includes collision warning and emergency braking. Other available features include rear cross traffic alert, vehicle exit assist, turn assist, collision avoidance assist, stop and go and traffic jam assist, and adaptive cruise control.

All models have Audi’s MMI scroll wheel feature, what controls the touchscreen. Available navigation, Audi Connect with 4G LTE internet, and a 10-speaker audio system with a CD player and MP playback are additional highlights. Buyers may upgrade to a 19-speaker Bose or to a Bang & Olufsen 3D advanced sound system ($5,000).

I’m a fan of Audi’s telematics system. In the Q7, the screen emerges from the top of the dash and cants towards the driver. The black background with orange and white lettering is easy to read. The Google maps street view interface is quite detailed, revealing building outlines in addition to streets, parks, and other landmarks.

Audi also provides an “all-in-touch” multimedia interface co-developed with Preh. Instead of pressing a button for MMI functionality, sensors and actuators “read” your commands. Navigation, telephone and multimedia input control is at the ready in this unique hub.

Parting Thoughts

The all-new Q7 provides a more wagon-like departure from the previous SUV. Its bold face, elegant lines, and dramatic sculpting add flair and distinction, while its interior is as close to perfection for five passengers as anything else on the market.

Yes, you can squeeze two youngsters in the third row, but that comes at much sacriffice to storage capacity.

It is hard to say what the take rate will be on one engine versus the other, but if you put a premium on performance, only the supercharged V6 will suffice.

Choose the Premium Plus with the V6 ($60,400) and include the driver assistance and vision packages and you’ll come away with a well-equipped model for about $66,000 — that’s easily within the range of other luxury models in this segment.

Forced Induction Phenomenon: 2017 Volvo S90

May 9, 2017 by admin 5 Comments

Volvo’s largest sedan is a head turner.

2017 Volvo S90.
2017 Volvo S90 Inscription.

There aren’t too many times when I may urge shoppers to wait a year to purchase a particular model. Indeed, most people who approach me about my car recommendations have already completed their research and are simply looking for validation that their decision is the correct one.

2017 Volvo S90

But consumers looking at the 2017 Volvo S90 may want to put the brakes on their purchase decision, at least until this summer. That’s when the current sedan gets replaced by a stretched wheelbase version, adding 4.7 inches between the wheels. This particular extension benefits rear-seated passengers the most in the form of extra room behind the B (center) roof pillars.

So, what this means is that the extended wheelbase version of the sedan — available only in China at the moment — will become the lone version available in the US for the 2018 model year. Manufacturing for the standard wheelbase model continues at Volvo’s factory in Sweden for supplying the European market primarily after 2017. A Chinese factory builds the stretched wheelbase model and will start shipping them to North America this summer. The China connection comes by way of parent company Geely, owner of Volvo cars since 2008.

But waiting isn’t for everyone and if you’re shopping the midsize luxury sedan market, the 2017 S90 may have caught your eye. If so, credit Volvo with delivering a handsome sedan and doing so in an extremely competitive segment.

Indeed, it isn’t enough to do battle in a cutthroat class where the BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Jaguar XF, Lexus GS, Audi A6, and the Infiniti Q70 are among the established players. You have to execute and in a way that wows customers.

2017 Volvo S90

Sleek, Stylish Luxury Sedan

That “wow factor” is evident the moment you set your eyes on the sedan. A long, sleek profile is the first manifestation of something entirely modern, even beautiful. The front fascia offers an immediate focal point for its polished look with its upright grille and unique headlamp design highlighted by available “Thor’s hammer” accent lights. Further, the S90 features an athletic and wide stance with firm shoulders.

Pronounced wheel wells, a high belt line, a sweeping roofline, and lower panel trim add flair and distinction. An assortment of multi-spoke alloy wheels ranging in size from 18 to 20 inches complete the profile.

From the rear, you’ll find a raised, notched deck marked by wraparound tail lamps and dual exhaust ports. The unique creases that sit just below the belt line flow into the rear deck, amplifying this sedan’s stately presentation.

Cabin Highlights and Features

Inside, the 2017 Volvo S90 supplies room for five. Amazingly comfortable and supportive bucket seats are up front; a 40-20-40 fixed bench seat is in the rear — drop open the middle armrest and you’ll find a narrow pass-through to the trunk.

Credit Volvo’s designers for delivering an outstanding interior, rivaling that of any competing model. My top-level Inscription grade came outfitted with all the desirable creature features, including walnut wood inlays across the lower dash, within each door, and covering the front cup holders.

2017 Volvo S90An ample supply of leather is on hand too — across the top of the dashboard, surrounding the steering wheel and transmission shifter, capping the door frames and enfolding each door’s armrest. Double-stitched, high-quality materials befitting a large, luxury sedan are in abundance here.

I’ve always liked Volvo interiors, especially for the ergonomic layout of the driver controls. It is the little things that matter much too, including the slide top cup holder and smartphone covers. When closed, the two meet, forming one unified point. You’ll also find sturdy metal door handles that open by slipping a finger inside and pulling out.

Volvo supplies a digital dashboard, steering wheel-mounted auxiliary and audio controls, driver seat memory, rear vents, and rear climate control. In addition to heated and cooled seats up front, the rear outboard seats come heated as well, thanks to a $1,050 climate package that also brings in a heated windshield, heated windshield washer nozzles, and a heated steering wheel.

The rear center seat armrest not only provides access to the trunk (measuring just 13.5 cubic feet), but it supplies a covered storage area, an open storage tray — ideal for holding a smartphone — and a pair of pull-out drink holders. Each door comes with a pair of drink holders too, although the rear doors are a bit narrower and shallower than what I would have liked. One last thought to consider: rear seat access and egress means bending your head down carefully to avoid whacking same. The 2018 version should make entering and leaving easier, as well as providing cross-your-legs back seat comfort.

Safety & Technology

Perhaps no other automaker combines safety and technology as thoroughly (and effectively) as does Volvo. The Swedish automaker pioneered a number of safety features we take for granted, including three-point safety belts, inflatable curtain airbags, blind spot information systems, and automatic braking with pedestrian detection.

But Volvo never rests on its laurels. Last year, the company announced its “Vision 2020” plan whereby the company promised that no one will be seriously injured or killed by one of its new cars (unless someone does so with the intent to harm). That’s part of a stepped-up initiative in collision avoidance, including autonomous vehicles. We’ll soon see how Volvo puts everything into practice — the company is not one to make bold pronouncements without following through on time, unlike some competitors (here’s looking at you Tesla Motors!)

That said, we’re in the here and now with the 2017 Volvo S90. This model comes with LED headlights with active bending lights — the better to see around corners at night when turning. You’ll also find frontal collision mitigation support, lane keeping aid (consequentially, you’ll feel the steering wheel provide a slight tug if you drive off center), hill start assist, a park assist camera, rear park assist, and emergency brake assist. And as you would expect, this Volvo claims a top safety score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). No testing has been conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as of publication.

2017 Volvo S90

Beyond safety-enhanced technology, Volvo provides other tech features to enhance the user experience. A 10-speaker, 224-watt audio system is standard with the tweeters, woofers, and mid-range speakers separated to augment sound reproduction. Also available is a Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system ($3,200), a 1,400-watt extravaganza featuring 19 high-end speakers. One speaker sits on top of the dash above the center console and its 12.3-inch screen.

The B&W package also includes a CD player, located in the most unlikely of all places — inside the center compartment underneath the armrest. For some odd reason, I couldn’t figure out how to get the CD working by means of the display screen. Instead, it took pushing the steering wheel-mounted voice-command button to get it to activate, once I instructed it to do so.

As for the 12.3-inch display, it is a big improvement over the previous system with it more than two dozen switches, knobs and buttons — a calamity for the novice and a distraction for everyone else. That’s not to say the replacement screen can’t be distracting, but with voice command at the ready, there should be very little direct interaction while driving.

Other tech features include a pair of USB ports, one auxiliary audio input, a 12-volt power outlet in the cargo area, Bluetooth, navigation, and dual-zone climate control. Buyers may opt for a vision package ($1,950), what brings in such features as a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert, retractable rear view mirrors, and a 360-degree surround view camera. A head-up display option ($900) is also available.

On the Road

Choose a 2017 S90 and the base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine making 250 horsepower. Utilizing a base four-cylinder engine is now common in the segment as the German manufacturers, Cadillac, and Jaguar each offer one. Two liters is also the common displacement and each of the competing engines has at least one turbocharger present.

What may surprise some is that Volvo’s upgraded engine also displaces at two liters. My all-wheel drive test model came with a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Notably, the same engine is now used across Volvo’s entire product line — you’ll find it in turbocharged (T5) and supercharged and turbocharged (T6) configurations. The latter choice also yields a 362-horsepower Polestar variant in some models, but not with the S90.

Both engine choices come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, but only on the base Momentum and Inscription models. Otherwise, all-wheel drive is the choice. By the way, the engine choices correspond with the drivetrain, so you get the standard engine when choosing front-wheel drive and the upgraded engine when you go with all-wheel drive.

2017 Volvo S90

Thankfully, my test Inscription all-wheel drive model delivered the complete goods. You start the engine by moving the toggle switch found behind the transmission shifter. Toggle to the right and the car starts. Toggle to the left and the ignition ceases.

Immediately behind the toggle switch is the drive mode controller, enabling you to choose between comfort, eco, dynamic, off road and individual modes. Most people will opt for comfort and eco modes — dynamic provides longer shift points for the transmission and beefs up engine performance, but I never took a liking to those changes. Personally, I enjoy dynamic mode, chiefly in cars outfitted with larger engines.

Step on the gas pedal and the S90 moves forward with authority. The supercharger is at work immediately supplying low-end grunt; the turbocharger joins in further up the rpm scale, delivering an extra boost of power just when you want it.

Not once did I feel the diminutive engine insufficient for this large sedan. That said, despite the sound deadening materials and other refinements, I could hear the engine’s occasional raspiness. Where larger engines may growl, the Volvo engine seems closer to a purr.

On the road, this sedan supplies a comfortable ride on even surfaces, but as you pass over a speed bump or nick a pothole, you’ll feel a slight shudder reverberate through the sedan. Passing power is excellent. If you take on twisty roads, the sedan maintains poise along the way — you won’t find yourself fighting with the steering wheel in a desperate effort to assert control.

Volvo S90 Considerations

The 2017 Volvo S90 starts at $46,950 for the standard Momentum model (T5 FWD) and $49,650 for the Inscription (T5 FWD) grade. Choose the T6 AWD and you’ll pay $52,950 for the Momentum and $55,450 for the Inscription. Add $995 for the destination and handling fee.

My test model included all four packages as well as the leather upgrade ($1,000) wrapping the top of the dashboard and the doors. The final price with metallic paint and 20-inch Inscription wheels came in at $66,105. That’s within the range of other fully-loaded models in the segment.

Personally, I would opt for the more potent engine with all-wheel drive. I would also consider the optional air suspension ($1,200), what should deliver a more settled ride along with improved handling. Your out-the-door price will likely top $60,000 for a well-equipped model, so use that price point when shopping for your S90.

2017 Volvo S90

Parting Thoughts

So, should you buy a 2017 S90 or hold off a few months and wait for the 2018 model? The new model will cost you just $1,150 more, an even smaller increase than my recently tested Infiniti Q70L and its five-inch extended wheelbase. And you might not have to wait as long either — as of this writing, dealers are taking orders for the 2018 S90s.

Invariably, there will be some resistance from buyers because of the engine choices. For some, the optional supercharged-turbocharged combination is hard to grasp. But what it does do is deliver potent power with solid fuel economy — 22/31 mpg city/highway. Choose the standard engine and you’ll enjoy 23/34 mpg city/highway.

And if waiting isn’t enough of a consideration, some shoppers may want to delay their purchase decision for yet another reason: 2018 will also bring the S90 T8, a plug-in hybrid version (PHEV) that makes a combined 400 horsepower and 416 pound-feet of torque and allows all-wheel drive. It’ll carry a base price of $63,650 and deliver a level of performance some may say is missing from the S90. Throw in about 20 miles of electric-only range and the S90 T8 may attract a new breed of Volvo customers.

The 2017 Jaguar XE by the Numbers

May 4, 2016 by admin 2 Comments

The Jaguar XE is the latest model in this big cat’s repertoire.

Jaguar XE.
The Jaguar XE Range.

Not since Jaguar retired the X-TYPE in 2009 has it had a compact sedan to take on the BMW 3 Series and like luxury models. That earlier vehicle was outperformed in an ultra-competitive segment and simply didn’t have the kind of rear-wheel drive architecture prized by most buyers. The 2017 Jaguar XE changes that, a rear-wheel drive model available with all-wheel drive. To that end, we’ll take a look at the important “numbers” defining this model.

2 — Two represents the Roots-type twin vortex supercharger mounted to the V of the engine. It is joined by a water-cooled intercooler designed to reduce the temperature of the intake air in an effort to improve power and efficiency. The supercharger is controlled by a Bosch engine management software package. The V-6 engine gets a supercharger; the two four-cylinder engines are boosted by turbochargers.

3 — Jaguar has three engine choices for the XE, including a late-arriving turbo-diesel. A supercharged 3.0-liter, V-6 is the performance leader, making 340 horsepower and 332 foot-pounds of torque. Next up is a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine making 240 horsepower and 251 foot-pounds of torque. If you can wait a bit longer, the 2.0-liter, turbo-diesel “four” may be worth your while — it makes 180 horsepower and 318 foot-pounds of torque. All three engines are paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic.

5 — Five or 5.0 is the top 0-to-60 mph time for this sedan. You’ll reach that threshold if you have an all-wheel drive XE powered by the supercharged V-6. If you prefer rear-wheel drive, no sweat: you’ll get to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. Five, by the way, is the number of people who can ride in the Jaguar XE.

101 — Automakers are busy finding ways to reduce their impact on the environment through various design and light-weighting schemes. Jaguar is doing its part by incorporating 101 pounds of recycled materials, including plastics and renewable materials. Depending on the model chosen, the 2017 XE weighs anywhere from 3,320 to 3,795 pounds.

304 — Jaguar has never made an engine lighter than the upcoming gasoline four-cylinder, weighing just 304 pounds. Lift the hood of the XE and you’ll see it oriented longitudinally and paired with the same ZF 8-speed automatic now common to the Jaguar brand. Further weight savings were gained by riveting and bonding.

825 — Two Meridian audio system packages are available. Most buyers will probably be satisfied with the 380-watt, 11-speaker audio system, tailored to the interior’s acoustics. However, audiophiles may be drawn to the 825-watt, 14-speak system equipped with stereo and surround sound processors.

$34,900 — Affording a luxury sedan typically means starting off at a high price point and going from there. Jaguar pegs the base XE at $34,900, what delivers a rear-wheel drive 25t edition powered by a turbocharged, four-cylinder gasoline engine. Choose the 20d and you’ll pay only $1,500 extra for the turbo-diesel. The top-of-the-line 35t is powered by the supercharged V-6 engine and retails from $41,700. R-Spec models will drive the final cost up to about $50,000. Jaguar’s aggressive pricing may attract mainstream midsize sedan owners, giving customers a logical entry-point to the brand.

60,000 — All 2016 and later Jaguars are now covered by a 5-year or 60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty. That’s up from the previous 4-year, 50,000-mile warranty offered in 2015 and earlier years. For the same length, Jaguar offers complimentary scheduled maintenance and ‘round the clock roadside assistance.

Jaguar XE: Beyond the Numbers

Besides the hard numbers, Jaguar is intent on informing prospective customers that the XE is a well-equipped and artistically designed sedan. Interiors are dressed in fine-grain leathers with twin-needle stitching. Gloss black, textured aluminum, and contemporary wood veneers are also present. Customers will have a choice of 10 colors.

On the technology front, the Jaguar XE comes with InControl Touch, with an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen. The system supports Bluetooth, audio streaming and USB connectivity. Laser head-up display (HUD) technology is available as is an autonomous emergency braking system utilizing stereo camera technology. Lastly, adaptive cruise control, close vehicle sensing, blind spot monitoring, parking assist, and reverse traffic detection are also available.

If a larger sedan is to your liking, Jaguar has the midsize XF and the full-size XJ. There’s also the delicious F-TYPE sports car and if an SUV is your thing, the first-ever Jaguar F-PACE is yet another model to consider.

New Lexus IS Makes Global Introduction at Beijing Motor Show

April 26, 2016 by admin 1 Comment

Refreshed Lexus IS debuts at Auto China 2016.

Lexus’ entry in the compact luxury market is the IS, a vehicle that goes up against the likes of the BMW 3 Series, Cadillac ATS, Infiniti Q50, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Audi A3 among others. Four years ago Lexus took the wraps off of the second-generation model. Yesterday, Toyota’s luxury brand unveiled a new IS, using the Beijing Motor Show as the venue for that debut.

Lexis IS Sedan.
New Lexus IS Debuts at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show.

Updated Front Fascia

The upcoming model advances a look that is at once powerful as it is familiar. Lexus said the modest update is due to the popularity of the current visage. Nevertheless, the front fascia receives transformative changes, including new headlamps, large air intakes in the front bumpers, and an evolved spindle grille.

The new grille now folds back at a higher point to enhance its sporty feel. In F SPORT models, the grille gains an exclusive three-dimensional F-mesh pattern with jet-black metallic coating. That grille also incorporates functional brake ducts.

Standard with the Lexus IS are 10-spoke 17-inch wheels that advance fresh designs with bright machine finishes. At the rear, more pronounced “L”-shaped LED light guides are present and triple layered within the tail light housing. New rectangular chrome exhaust tips give prominence to the sedan’s sporting persona.

Interior Modifications and Updates

Inside, the IS’ cabin benefits from several changes, including a large multimedia display. Measuring a whopping 10.3 inches, the new color display replaces the current 7-inch layout. Lexus says that the new high-resolution monitor provides a sharper image of the various functions accessible. Further, “Enter” buttons have been added to both sides of the Remote Touch Interface (RTI) on the center console to enhance ease of use.

Lexus also reworked the center dash, refitting the audio and ventilation panels to set within the knee bolsters. An all-new hairline-finish surface provides an improved look and feel according to Lexus.

Additional interior improvements include an in-dash analog clock, new stitching in an effort to enhance the cockpit’s sporty design, and new cup holders. The leather-wrapped palm rest has also been enlarged.

On the safety front, Lexus notes that the IS’s safety equipment has been improved with the Lexus Safety System +. This system brings together Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beam (AHB) and Radar Cruise Control.

Three Engine Choices

As before, the IS’ three-engine lineup returns. The rear-wheel drive 200t is powered by a 2.0-liter, twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine making 241 horsepower and 258 foot-pounds of torque. This engine comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The IS also offers a pair of 3.5-liter, V-6 engines. In the all-wheel drive only IS 300, this engine makes 255 horsepower and 236 foot-pounds of torque, and comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

In the IS 350, the V-6 benefits from stoichiometric (stoic) direct injection, what modifies the air-fuel mixture for heightened performance. As a result, this engine produces 306 horsepower and 277 foot-pounds of torque. It comes paired with an 8-speed automatic with the rear-wheel drive model or a 6-speed automatic with the all-wheel drive model.

Pricing to be Determined

Absent from the model line is a manual transmission, something Lexus’ competitors continue to provide. If you are looking for a diesel you will not find one among any Lexus models and as for a hybrid IS, you will have to check out the ES 300h Hybrid instead.

Lexus hasn’t shared pricing or a release date yet for the new IS.

Shell V-Power NiTRO+ Premium Gasoline Debuts

June 3, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

Shell United States has developed a new premium fuel, claiming that it will extend engine life and increase efficiencies. The new fuel has gone on sale this month. To celebrate this auspicious occasion, the oil company is giving away 100 BMWs.

Most cars run on regular-grade gasoline, but there are some vehicles for which mid- or premium-grade gasolines are recommended, even required. In most cases, these models employ forced induction, with turbochargers or superchargers providing the necessary horsepower boost.

fuel tank -- NITRO+

What’s in your fuel tank?

Shell V-Power Nitro+ — A Better Premium Gasoline?

One June 1, Shell stations across the country began offering a more expensive grade of premium gasoline, Shell V-Power Nitro+. The oil company asserts that the new fuel will provide greater efficiency and extend engine life, although those claims have yet to be independently verified as explained in the Detroit Free Press.

Shell says its new premium gasoline targets gunk, corrosion and wear, three enemies of any engine. To fight gunk, Shell has increased its cleaning agents sevenfold, removing approximately 60 percent of carbon deposits that adhere to intake valves and fuel injectors.

As for corrosion, the new fuel removes moisture and contaminants, what eventually settle into a vehicle’s fuel tank. Before hitting the tank the fuel pump, fuel lines and fuel injectors are also impacted. Moreover, Shell claims NITRO+ stymies the blockage of fuel filters, what can adversely influence performance.

Regarding wear, Shell says that NITRO+ protects against the natural breakdown of parts, as in when metal surfaces rub against each other. Affected components include the piston assembly, fuel pump and fuel injectors, what contributes to higher oil depletion.

Laboratory and Road Testing

For its part, Shell extensively tested the new fuel before deeming it ready for the market. The company said that it used “industry standard laboratory procedures and bench engines” to test its formulations. In particular, Shell selected an assortment of mainstream and prominent vehicles for testing, recording more than 500,000 miles drive time with vehicles outfitted with direct (fuel) injection and turbochargers. Flex-fuel vehicles were also part of that research.

Shell developed NITRO+ to meet a growing trend whereby manufacturers are producing more engines that take premium grade gasoline. Notably, one in five Shell customers buys premium gasoline, but 80 percent of those consumers believe that all premium gasolines are the same. Shell developed NITRO+ to set apart its premium product from the competition and to meet growing demand.

Shell hasn’t divulged what cleaning agents it uses in NITRO+, although it says the fuel “contains an innovative combination of two key cleaning agents that work together in harmony” in a bid to increase efficacy and preservation.

BMW Endorsement and Giveaway

NITRO+ has already won an important endorsement from BMW as the German automaker recommends that M Series owners use the fuel. And to celebrate that recognition, Shell is currently giving away 100 new BMWs and cash during the first 100 days that the fuel is on sale. The promotional campaign runs through September 8, 2015, and is open to Shell customers. Additional details can be found right here.

As for your vehicle, premium grade gasoline may or may not be necessary. Check your owner’s manual or the placard by your fuel tank for that information. We do know that NITRO+ provides the same 91 octane rating as before and also costs a few pennies more. Expect pricing to be adjusted based on demand.

Meeting the Grade and Beyond

As Shell improves its top-level gasoline an industry-wide trend toward higher grade gasolines is likely. Those higher grades will not only enhance performance, but help automakers meet increasingly more stringent fuel economy and emissions requirements.
