8 Concept Cars That Should Have Been Built

Concept cars reflect the dreams and aspirations of designers with not a little influence from engineering teams. Some manufacturers, such as Honda, routinely make their concepts a reality, while others tease us with amazingly beautiful visages then scrap their ideas completely.

Auto Trends — with not a little help from three contributors — has identified eight concept cars that we deemed should have made it to production. This diverse octet of teasers may not have been produced, but they still stir the imaginations of not a few enthusiasts.

1. Amory Lovins Hypercar

You say you never heard of Amory Lovins? That’s a shame because this physicist and environmental scientist envisaged a concept vehicle in 1994 featuring an aerodynamic body with a low-drag design. And not just any design —Lovins’ idea included advanced composite materials or lightweight elements that are just now beginning to go mainstream.

Lovins, who heads up the Rocky Mountain Institute (a leader in all things sustainable), founded the Hypercar Center to validate the vehicle’s technical achievability and marketing possibilities. Shel Horowitz of FrugalMarketing.com made Auto Trends aware of the concept, a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle that is lightweight, highly efficient and environmentally responsible.

Alas, Lovins’ dream has yet to become a reality, but the company that later took up his lightweighting mantle, Fiberforge, is now working with the aerospace, defense and automotive industries to develop lighter, stronger and recyclable parts. Notably, hydrogen fuel-cell cars are just now coming to the market, but from the major manufacturers.

2. Cadillac Elmiraj

For more than a decade, Cadillac has teased us with several concept cars, with each one pointing to a possible range-topping model. The Cadillac Sixteen, presented in 2003, was the first of the trio, a concept powered by a 13.6-liter, V-16 engine. Few people expected that Cadillac would build this 1,000-horsepower testament to automotive excess, but it did demonstrate that GM had aspirations for its luxury brand.

Two additional concepts were introduced years later — the 2011 Cadillac Ciel convertible and the 2013 Cadillac Elmiraj coupe. In both instances, GM chose the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance to make public these models.

Of the two, some analysts thought that the hardtop Elmiraj had the better chance of seeing production. That exquisite 2+2 grand coupe was powered by a twin turbo 4.5-liter V-8 engine making 500 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque. Although the coupe will not be produced, the styling cues do point to the 2016 Cadillac CT6, a top-of-the-range sedan arriving on the market for 2016.

3. Ford Bronco

The Mustang is not the only Ford product with brand cachet. To be sure, the Ford Bronco SUV has had its own core following, an SUV that made its debut in 1966 and immediately captured the hearts of off-road enthusiasts. The original model was small and manageable, but later generations were built on the F-150 chassis. However, a second model — the Ford Bronco II — had a brief appearance on the market, underpinned by the platform powering the Ford Ranger pickup truck.

Ford SUV fans have been clamoring for the Bronco’s return for years and in 2004 it seemed that the “blue oval” would help make those dreams become a reality. Specifically, at the 2004 Detroit auto show — North American International Auto Show — Ford pulled the wraps off of a Bronco concept powered by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine.

Paul Celentano, a self-described car collector and automotive historian (as well as a portfolio manager with Harbor Financial Services LLC, shared his desire to see the Bronco return, noting that “as a collector, there is great appeal in owning a usable classic, one with the charm and cult status of the original coupled with modern amenities and reliability,” of the new model. To Celetano’s disappointment, Ford never built the Bronco, deciding instead to go with a fleet of crossover utility vehicles, including the similar-sized Ford Escape.

4. Pontiac Banshee

For much of its life the Pontiac brand lived in the shadow of Chevrolet. In general, Pontiac was marketed as a performance brand, but Chevrolet had the hot vehicles and the favor of GM brass, chiefly because of its sheer size and scope.

That fact never stopped GM’s designers from producing a variety of concept vehicles down through the years for an assortment of brands to gauge public perceptions. For example, one concept — the enchanting Pontiac Banshee — was developed in four iterations spanning 25 years. That first model was the brainchild of John Z. DeLorean, who later brought us the futuristic DeLorean DMC-12.

Truly, the first Banshee (1964) pointed to the future third generation Chevrolet Corvette and also incorporated tail lights that would appear on the first generation Pontiac Firebird that would come out just a few years later. The original Banshee was never built because GM believed it would outsell the Corvette. Subsequent Banshee concepts also pointed to future Firebird models with some of those styling cues assumed by the Pontiac sport coupe.

5. Subaru B9 Scrambler

That Subaru might someday build an honest to goodness sports car has long intrigued diehard fans. Of course, all-wheel drive sedans and crossovers are fine, but there is something about a charismatic sports car that stimulates excitation. And that’s where the Subaru B9 Scrambler comes in, a luscious sports car introduced at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show.

Paige Arnof-Fenn, a Subaru Forester owner and founder of the Mavens & Moguls marketing firm, reminded Auto Trends of the Scrambler, an all-wheel drive sports car with a hybrid drivetrain and a variable ride-height suspension — just perfect for off-road travel. The two-seater concept had a 134-horsepower electric motor and a 138-horsepower gas engine — both could operate separately or together.

However, the B9 Scrambler was not to be although the “B9” part of the name later appeared briefly with the Subaru Tribeca before that large SUV was discontinued. Still later, Subaru worked with Toyota to produce the BRZ, a rear-wheel drive sports coupe powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine. For its part, Toyota got the Scion FR-S and both 2+2 models share parts with a third model — theToyota 86.

6. Lincoln Continental Concept (2002)

Wait a minute — didn’t we just see the Lincoln Continental Concept at the 2015 New York International Auto Show? Indeed, you did. Likewise, that vehicle is already planned for production, although certain details (is it front- or rear-wheel drive?) remain unanswered.

The concept Lincoln Continental was not the first of its kind. Indeed, 13 years earlier Lincoln unveiled a concept that blended the styling cues of the 1960s-era Continental with a more modern, albeit squared-off design. That model featured a 414-horsepower, V-12 engine and was introduced at the 2002 Los Angeles Auto Show. Replete with a heritage grille and suicide doors, the sedan was thought by some as certain for production.

Ford never built the earlier concept, perhaps as it found itself bogged down with its own line of Premier Auto Group brands — Aston Martin, Volvo, Jaguar and Land Rover — to maintain. Whatever the reasons for the abortive earlier attempt, the latest model will become a reality although it looks nothing like the previous conception.

7. Hummer HX

Hummer’s reputation as a builder of bloated sport utility vehicles never helped its cause. Although there was one model that endeared itself to the mass market, the H3, it was still quite large despite sharing the same platform underpinning GM’s midsize pickup trucks.

At the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, GM introduced a concept Hummer HX model sized along the lines of the Jeep Wrangler. Its modern design, removable fender flares and second row seats, and leading-edge tech features were designed with young people in mind. And with a base price below $30,000, it had the potential to make the Hummer brand attainable for a broader audience.

The concept never became a reality as GM went bankrupt in 2009 and the Hummer brand was dissolved in 2010. However, some are insisting that the concept or something like it may yet become a reality, perhaps sold as a GMC model in a bid to do battle with the Jeep Wrangler.

8. Mazda Furai

Mazda has achieved celebrity status with its now-retired RX8 and MX-5 Miata, but fans have long known that this small, Japanese automaker had aspirations that went far beyond its more common sports models. So, it was at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, where Mazda took the wraps off of the Furai (sound of the wind), a Le Mans-inspired sports car.

The carbon-composite Mazda Furai probably would have been best suited for the track as it was powered by an all-new 450-horsepower Wankel rotary engine designed to run on E100 ethanol fuel. Indeed, this model did some track time, although it caught fire and was destroyed later that year.

Destroying a concept doesn’t mean that a road-ready model cannot be built. But its production reality was never seriously considered nor that of the five previous Nagare (flowing) models built within three years of each other. Instead, some of the design elements have since been incorporated within current Mazda products.

Unrealized Concept Cars

Our list of eight concepts represents only a small number of the hundreds of vehicles paraded before auto show attendees down through the decades. Cadillac LTS and Other Luxury Rumors

The Cadillac brand’s US sales are down by nearly 1 percent through the first seven months of July 2014, in a market where some of its competitors are enjoying double-digit increases. While this trend is certainly not something GM is happy about, the long-term outlook for Cadillac seems bright.

In the interim, Cadillac has gained an all-new ATS Coupe, the next generation Escalade and a mild refreshing for the CTS sedan. Based on these changes its sales fortunes will most certainly reverse.

Flagship Cadillac LTS Sedan

What may be most significant for GM’s luxury brand are the persistent rumors about an all-new flagship sedan, one that could be based on the Cadillac Elmiraj concept coupe that headlined the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. With the 2014 Pebble Beach show coming up this weekend, rumors are once again heating up.

Such rumors have the so-called Cadillac LTS debuting at the 2015 New York International Auto Show next April. The auto blogs point to an unnamed source high up in the GM management chain as confirming the findings (maybe the “source” is a clerk working at RenCen).

Before we look at the possibility of a Cadillac LTS we need to examine the market. That market is dominated by the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8 and Lexus LS among its chief competitors. Mercedes prices its flagship from $92,000, much higher than the starting price for its competitors, which generally start in the $75,000 range.

Prestige and Profits

Flagship models provide two attributes: prestige and profits. These are not simply “halo” models, but are the faces for their respective brands. A good “looker” at the top of the brand attracts customers who may aspire to someday own a top end model or at least enjoy the association. As for profits flagship luxury sedans provide profits that rival pickup trucks. That would give GM an edge that neither Ford nor Chrysler has.

The Cadillac LTS or similar model would be built on the upcoming Omega rear-wheel-drive platform, complementing the Alpha platform that underpins both the ATS and CTS. GM would spread the Omega’s cost across other brands with Buick (Riviera?) and Holden (Commodore?) also likely recipients. Badge engineering, thankfully, seems dead as News Hub observed.

Possible Technical Specifications

The LTS would most likely offer an all-wheel-drive option. The base engine could be the same twin-turbo 3.6-liter found in the Cadillac XTS. A new generation of V-8 engines seems possible as well. And with GM committing to supplying more diesels to the US market, that option also seems possible. An 8-speed automatic transmission would be standard across the model line.

As far as interior amenities go, all the goodies found in current Cadillac models would be included and then some. The latest iteration of magnetic ride control might be introduced and the LTS could be outfitted with more autonomous features than any Cadillac model to date. These “goodies” are not based on mere speculation, but are among the auto trends we’ve been seeing within Cadillac.

Placeholder Cadillac XTS

As far as the future of the XTS, its alleged role as a “placeholder” may not be true. There may still be room for this model in the Cadillac line up despite the XTS’ size rivaling the CTS. The XTS might offer an appealing “step” from a more moderately-priced CTS to a full-blown Cadillac LTS.

Another argument for preserving the XTS is that it shares its platform with the Chevrolet Impala and Buick LaCrosse, therefore its costs have been wrung out across three model lines. XTS sales are down in the US, but were up by 58 percent in China this July. An ATS-CTS-XTS-LTS line up could prove a powerful punch to once again elevate Cadillac to world-class status.

Thrice Teased: Cadillac Sixteen, Ciel and Elmiraj

Cadillac has served up a cluster of concept vehicles over the past decade including handsome full-size models that have hinted at brand greatness. The Cadillac Sixteen was presented in 2003, an outrageously over-the-top performance machine outfitted with a V-16 engine. In 2011 the handsome Cadillac Ciel rolled out and just this past week we got a glimpse at the inspiring Cadillac Elmiraj.

All three models have teased Cadillac faithful, pointing to possible future glory, but with scant commitment from GM management that we will ever see these vehicles or anything closely related to them in Cadillac showrooms.

Certainly, GM has followed through and brought several Cadillac concepts to the market. The upcoming ELR, the current CTS coupe and even the Cadillac XTS were based on concept models. But, when it comes to either a halo model or a true flagship to take on the BMW 7 Series, the Mercedes Benz S-Class or the Audi A8, GMs commitment just isn’t there. At least not yet.

Cadillac Sixteen

In 2003, the Cadillac Sixteen concept was introduced, a four-door hardtop with an all-glass roof. Its long hood, 24-inch wheels and sharp Art & Science design cues stunned the automotive world and had journalists and enthusiasts gushing praise.

The Cadillac Sixteen was the work of GM design chief Wayne Cherry and was supported by Bob Lutz, then GMs vice chairman. Under the hood was a working 13.6-liter V-16 engine making 1,000 horsepower and 1,000 foot-pounds of torque. Lutz wanted the Sixteen produced, in a bid to help Cadillac reclaim the standard of the world moniker it had held decades earlier. He expected approximately 350 to be built annually, selling for upwards of $300,000 a piece according to Autoweek.

But, the Sixteen never saw production as GMs financial guys refused to fund the project. However, some of the sedans styling cues have made it to other products including the Cadillac CTS. Interestingly, the Cadillac Sixteen concept continues to show up at automotive events around the country, including at the 2013 Amelia Island Concours dElegance. For some reason, GM wont let its original aspirations die even if the concept is now more than a decade old.

Cadillac Ciel

In 2011, GM again stunned the automotive world by introducing the Cadillac Ciel at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Ciel is French for sky and this four-door convertible is all about bringing the outside to the interior opulence and comfort of a large, 2+2 coupe.

Unlike the Cadillac Sixteen, the Cadillac Ciel used an engine that is now in production: a twin turbo 3.6-liter V-6. It was also one part of a hybrid system, with a lithium-ion battery storing electricity. Thus, while the Sixteen would have consumed much fuel, the Ciel is as close to doing the opposite, and might do so without losing its large presence and its over-the-top appeal. Notably, eight years have separated the release of these two concepts, reflecting the increased emphasis on fuel efficiency prized by consumers today.

The 425-hp Cadillac Ciel Concept sits on a 125-inch wheelbase and features rear-hinged rear doors. Inside, the cabin is graced with Italian Olive wood, machined aluminum and generous amounts of leather. Other standout features include a floating center console with a built-in humidor, multiple connectivity ports and 22-inch wheels.

Cadillac Elmiraj

The third tease in this concept set is the Cadillac Elmiraj, itself a Pebble Beach Concours dElegance debutante, following the Ciel by two years. The closeness of the Ciel and Elmiraj debuts has sent tongues wagging about Cadillac’s top-of-the-range product plans, something we will address later.

The Cadillac Elmiraj has been described by GM as a grand coupe and that appellation seems appropriate. Its long hood, sleek body lines and raised rear deck sit on 22-inch aluminum wheels. The hood vents are functional, useful for dispensing the heat generated by the 4.5-liter twin turbo V-8 500-hp engine that powers this rear-wheel drive sedan.

Inside, the Elmiraj features custom leather, Brazilian Rosewood and titanium trim. A 10-inch navigation and connectivity touchscreen panel can be concealed within the dashboard. All four seating places tilt forward and recline.

The Omega Project

In July 2012 Auto Trends reported that GM had approved Cadillacs flagship model, dubbed Omega, with the intent to bring this model to the market in 2015. Later reports claimed that the project was canceled, but in July 2013 USA Today confirmed that a Cadillac model will slot above the XTS, currently the brands largest model that isnt an SUV.

The new model will feature rear-wheel drive with all-wheel drive available. Perhaps the Cadillac Elmiraj, Ciel and Sixteen will inspire its design and maybe point to a limited-production model that could be sold in tandem with the new Cadillac.

Thrice teased, it appears that enthusiasts wont have long to wait for the big reveal. This is pure speculation, but the range-topping Cadillac could debut as soon as Nov. in Los Angeles, but most likely Jan. in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show.
